Key claims / notable examples
- Chargers and Dolphins are “alarming” after ugly starts; Chargers’ cover margin is cited as historically bad (minus 39 through two games).
- Raiders are praised for a 2-0 start; Maxx Crosby is highlighted for a game-winning safety.
- Steelers look bad offensively with Aaron Rodgers pressured heavily (65% of dropbacks) and offense ranked extremely low in EPA per drive; defense is viewed as more solid.
- Packers are called “ass” despite a win; they’re said to have won with <200 yards, 100+ penalty yards, and negative turnover margin.
- Colts are encouraged after pushing the Chiefs to overtime, but their defense is criticized as historically bad (1,029 yards allowed in first two games).
- Saints are praised for late-game execution; Tyler Shuck is credited with clutch performance and Chris Olave is cited as a top tandem.
- Injury “bug” theme: Caleb Williams’ hamstring news is framed as better than feared; Jaden Daniels’ elbow injury is discussed; Sam Darnold’s injury is referenced from Week 1.
- MVP “hot out the gate” list includes Josh Allen, Brock Purdy, Bryce Young, Dak Prescott, and Joe Burrow; JSN is singled out as a “playmaker.”

Transcript
Automatic transcript. May contain errors.0:00Pat McAfee:Hello beautiful people and welcome to this glorious overreaction Monday September 21st, 2026. This sports program begins right now. Football is the absolute greatest. I am here at SoFi Stadium in lovely Los Angeles, California as not in a dome but certainly a little breezy morning as this beautiful city plays host to our second Monday night football game. as the New York Giants under John Harbaugh's leadership look to be a grand and pond squad. And then the Los Angeles Rams who went down to Australia, they went down under and got ponded into the ground by the San Francisco 49ers who didn't look tired at all coming back from Australia.
0:45Pat McAfee:They actually look like they might be the best team in all of ball. The Giants, obviously a run game. The Rams have Aaron Donald potentially back. I don't think that has been official yet, But all indicators are that one of the greatest players in the history of football will be making his debut after a two-year hiatus this evening in this beautiful stadium. So ball is fantastic. Monday night football's matchup is marquee. The Sunday slate had some. Interesting storylines begin to develop. Some of these teams that we thought were absolute shite and maybe in the dumpster for the rest of their lives might not be asked.
1:23Pat McAfee:Talking about you, the Browns. Hey, way to go, Bronies. Way to go, Bronny. I don't think anybody expected that for Cleveland, especially after a two-hour delay down there in Tampa Bay, sitting in the visitor's locker room. And all Tampa Bay has to do is a quick red zone two-minute drill to potentially win this game and send Cleveland back home drenched, delayed, and with another L. Instead, Deshaun Watson gets his first win in like 600 and some days or so. Good for him, good for the Browns, and good for Todd Munkin, who is seemingly electrifying behind a microphone and every single time he gets a chance to speak on camera.
1:59Pat McAfee:So they're not asked. There's some teams that might be spectacular, and we know that all day today we'll be covering ever a single angle. Adam Schefter will be joining us in about 30 minutes or so. Dan Orlovsky will be live. He was saying some stuff last week. We certainly got to kind of clear up a little bit. And then obviously the boys back in the Thunderdome are absolutely slaughtering it. Ladies and gentlemen, let's give a big thanks to college football national champion, Super Bowl champion, Ryder Cup winner, A.J. Hawk. Yeah! Thank you, Hawker! Thank you, Hawker. Oh, yeah. Thank you for traveling over to the Thunderdome.
2:32Pat McAfee:I heard you're in your militant boots and your militant pants. Is that because this overreaction Monday is filled with ground and pound conversations about what happened yesterday in the NFL? Yeah, a little bit. When I go on Amazon, I tend to order, you know, cargo pants, tactical pants, all of the things, a little stretchiness into them. I got, like, 15, 18 different pockets. I got hammer holders, pockets for whatever you need. So, yeah, in honor of all the ground and pound and a lot of the teams fighting through some of the weather yesterday, some of the adversity in the elements, you know, that's what I'm representing, I guess.
3:01Pat McAfee:I like you wearing big boots to get into the big boy conversations. Nine-year NFL vet Darius J. Butler is over there in the Thunderdome. Thank you, everybody. D-Bot, I love the hat. Obviously, accessorizing with the hoodie. You look fantastic. There were a couple teams that looked great yesterday, a couple teams that looked like ass. I'm excited for the top five, and more importantly, I'm excited for the shite division that we will roll out tomorrow. They're saying the AFC South might not just be one cheek. It might be two full ass cheeks down here. And I didn't expect that. Now, obviously, they're one in seven.
3:38Pat McAfee:I do believe the NFC South has two wins, obviously, through their eight. So the AFC South is potentially the shite division all by themselves. D, but anything you saw from the teams that maybe didn't look great yesterday that alarmed you or startled you?
3:52Adam Schefter:Oh, I mean, the Miami Dolphins, obviously. That's very, very alarming, the Miami Dolphins and the L.A. Chargers. So, obviously, two coming into this year, those were two of my teams. The Chargers very, very startled by their start. And, look, we know it looks ugly going forward for them. We expect them to probably come out and start 2-0. A lot of people expected Herbert to be in MVP conversations again. But it looks absolutely terrible. I'm shocked. I thought Mike McDame was going to be a great addition for this team. I thought the defense was going to show up and be better with the players that they have out there, and they look bad.
4:22Adam Schefter:Obviously, on the flip side, the Raiders look good off to a 2-0 start over in the AFC West.
4:27Pat McAfee:Yeah, congratulations to the Raiders. Love what they're doing and cooking. Love that Max Crosby gets a send-home safety to win this entire thing. Kirk Cousins had some interesting decisions, but certainly had a bunch of tuds to Mr. White here, who does the Sue celebration. That's his second touchdown of the day. We certainly knew he was going to do that. Two-plus tuds for Cody White Parlay yesterday. Probably would have paid you in a massive way. But congrats to the Raiders. And it stinks for the Chargers. They own the worst cover margin, minus 39. Boy. Of any team favored in each of their first two games since the 2003 Eagles.
5:00Pat McAfee:23 years ago, a team was favored in the first two games and got their absolute asses kicked. The last time Jim Harbaugh was 0-2 was like 2002 or something. He was a backup quarterback for the Chargers. Okay. Or 2000-something. I forget the year. Yeah, the year 2000. Jim Harbaugh hasn't been a part of an 0-2 team since 2000 when he was the Chargers backup quarterback. He usually wins. We thought McDaniel was going to come bring the best out of Herbert, and now people are saying, Herbert, this guy's all about Miss Beers. This guy doesn't even want to play football anymore. I don't like that. I don't love that at all because we still have faith.
5:39Pat McAfee:But maybe there is a little bit of a learning curve and him playing free in this new system. I'm not giving up on the Chargers just yet, but there are certainly some dire reasons to talk about them being ass. And then let's talk about a team that looked like ass. I don't love that I have to do this because I was obviously born and raised in the same place that this man was. Let's go to one half of the hammer. Dad! Cowboys AP tone. I don't like to tell you this, obviously, just to start the show like this, but that Pittsburgh Steelers team, boy, they look like booty holes. I don't know if we were expecting them to be the best team in the history, but Aaron Rodgers got sawed in half at the age of 42.
6:19Pat McAfee:I mean, he said, I haven't taken a lot of those hits in my career, which is basically saying, yeah, normally you can get a sense or a feel for these types of things. But I guess with the way we're playing right now, yeah, I'm just going to get blindsided, sawed in half, and sandwiched in the same play. And that wasn't the only time, obviously, he gets hit or the O-line didn't give up. It seems like, and I might be wrong here, Aaron Rodgers isn't necessarily loving what's going on. DK Metcalf has a couple drops. People were saying we're paying this guy$30 million. And Mike McCarthy, the Yinzer, obviously has a start now where everybody's wondering, what the hell are they going to be able to do with this team?
6:51Pat McAfee:Tone, have you given up completely with the Pittsburgh Steelers after what you saw yesterday against the New England Patriots? Or are you understanding this is new coach, new era, new schemes, new everything? It might take a little bit to kind of build, or has the patience already worn thin and you're giving it up? What did you say? New coach, new era, new schemes. Same bullshit on offense every goddamn year. The defense is fine. They looked great against the Falcons and Cooper Rush, who may be the worst quarterback of all time, with all due respect to Mr. Rush in that situation. They only gave up 13 points yesterday.
7:22They gave up the one big run to Travion Henderson. That wasn't great. But other than that, the defense looked pretty good. The offense, though, I believe so far 59th and 61st ranked games out of 62. The offense has been on EPA per drive. Rodgers was pressured on 65 % of his dropbacks yesterday. It's, oh my God, is it bad? I mean, the honeymoon phase is over, not just with the fans and everybody, but Rodgers is already throwing Big Mike under the bus, so we'll see how that goes already. We saw how that went in Green Bay.
7:50Pat McAfee:It's communication. He's just saying we got to work together a little bit. I think he's just saying I need to understand that Big Mike understands that I understand, you know, what's going on. Here's Aaron Rodgers after the game. In a game like today where there wasn't a lot of flow to it, we need to be better. And it starts with me at, like, making sure Mike knows what's working, what's not working, our coaches know. And so we can call stuff that, you know, we feel like has a better chance. Okay. What did you hear there, Age? What did you hear there, Age? Did you hear something different than I did?
8:23I didn't hear it. I mean, I heard, hey, communication is key in any relationship, right? Your husband and wife, whatever it may be, you've got to communicate. And Aaron and Big Mike have known each other for a long time. and I got to tell Maki, hey, this is working, this ain't working. What are we going to do here? So they got divorced, they got back together, thinking like, oh, this time's going to be great again, and it's already right. That works sometimes. Sometimes that works for people.
8:42Pat McAfee:It's nice. Sometimes you learn the second time around, they say. I've had the incredible opportunity to be around a couple on a vacation that was getting back together for the second time for the first or second week of that entire thing. And I was watching them remember in real time about all the terrible things that maybe their brains kind of erased. People are saying maybe that's happening with Aaron and Mike. I don't think that's the case. It's very early. It's very early in this. But signs are showing that this could potentially be the same old Steelers, which kind of leads to Mike Tallman kind of juicing up the boys over there in Cleveland.
9:14Pat McAfee:The Browns are going to bronze. He says absolutely not. Bulletin board material can obviously create a little bit of motivation. It can get you going a little bit. I don't think the team up in New England needed a lot against Pittsburgh Steelers. Let's go to the Talks table at Boston Conner and at Ty Schmidt, con man. First of all, congratulations to your New England Patriots. They look like they might be one of the best teams in the damn league. And then, Ty, let's start with you. Green Bay Packers, wow, what a comeback win. A little cardiac Packers situation happening out there. You knew it all along, or did you give up?
9:45Pat McAfee:I see you're wearing the Packers hat. We're back on track, it appears. Yeah, I suppose you could say that. They're one and one. That's really the most important thing. That team absolutely stinks, though, as of right now. As of right now. Now, again, it's early. Things can change. But they were the first team since 1941, at least, to win with less than 200 total yards, have 100-plus penalty yards, and have a negative turnover margin. Teams going into that spot were 0-44, and the Packers did manage to find a win. But, boy, it's just a tough watch. They stink through and through. Defense looks okay, but offense is piss poor.
10:22They can't protect Jordan Love. They have no run game. So we'll see. luckily they got by and the Jets are much better I think than people give them credit for but in my head the Jets are still the Jets you're supposed to go into MetLife you're supposed to beat the shit out of them but really all that matters is they're not one of these teams that's staring down 0-2 on overreaction Monday so for another week I'll be okay with it and we're looking ahead to Thursday
10:48Pat McAfee:okay I'm happy you got a big time dub and good luck on Thursday but this has been a pretty negative start let's go to Boston Connor, are you negative about the pick? Yeah, right. We got to feel very good about where we're sitting up in Foxborough, pal. Yeah, absolutely. We got the best defense in the freaking league, and we hit the hardest out of any team in the league. Did you see a hit harder than this one right here from Christian Ellis on Rodgers? No, you didn't. That was kind of the highlight of the entire weekend when it comes to defensive football and playing hard. Yeah, the offense is tough.
11:17We're going to have to figure that out, but this is exactly how the season started last year. It feels like everyone thinks Drake May came out last year and was the MVP of the league from start to finish. No, it took him a couple weeks. He's going to get that together. A.J. Brown going out early doesn't help either, but he's going to come along. The offense is going to come along, but they can win defensively, and that's all that matters. Gabe Jackass, a.k.a. Gabe Ackes, which is how you actually pronounce it. That was his first interception of his career, and it was off Aaron Rodgers. Yeah, I feel fantastic.
11:45New England football all the way back, and now we go on to Jacksonville. And just to clarify, too, Drake May's healthy. You know, some quarterbacks like Chicago, they had their quarterback, Terry's Achilles. And so the fact that we still have a healthy team there.
11:58Pat McAfee:That is inaccurate information. They are actually sighing a deep sigh of relief after early test results confirmed, says Tom Pelissero, that hamstring did not have major injury to it. Oh. They're not even ruling them out for Monday's game against the Eagles. So, Caleb Williams, I'll tell you, we all thought it was over. Yeah. Holy hell. I was tweeting the D-butt. I'm like, hey, this guy might be Neo, bro. This guy might be the actual one. Instead, hyperextension. Hamstring says, you can't do that. That's not how we're supposed to go. Everybody thought maybe the knee, though, went non-contact. Maybe Achilles.
12:36Pat McAfee:Who knows what it could be? Gets carted out. Obviously has the towel on the head. Okay, as he goes. Does the pump. The fist pump. If we could get to the ride out, please. If we could, Foxy, if we could get to the ride out, Foxy. This is the moment that I think everybody's worried about. I think everybody – I thought a killer was there. This is the part where all of us football fans were super bummed out about what was about to happen. Caleb Williams, the future of the city in Chicago with an incredible mustache, has the towel over the head, about to get escorted out, and oh, no, it's Tyson Bajan's team now.
13:17Pat McAfee:Ben Johnson was expecting to have the highest scoring offense in the history of the NFL. They go from 59 points to three points. And, oh, yeah, the next one, Neo and Caleb's gone forever. We were all in that moment. That entire stadium was saying, man, we almost had it this year. He said, we almost did. He's back on Monday. This is Paul Pierce level of what are you doing, pal. Now, happy he's healthy. But remember, Paul got wheeled out of a game, allegedly only had to poop. Now, I am a massive Paul Pierce fan. I am a huge fan of Paul Pierce. Anything he says, I normally hear and I laugh and I'm enjoyed by it.
13:57Pat McAfee:And I enjoy the hell out of it. But him getting rolled out of here and then obviously it being a poop and then him getting carted out, towel over his head, entire situation, we thought it was over for Paul and for Caleb. Turns out he's going to be back next Monday. D-butt, I heard you a lot of times say that Caleb is your guy. Yeah. Caleb is your guy. Does this change anything here? Do we think maybe this isn't the greatest thing to happen for a starting quarterback in the NFL? No. Obviously, hamstring injury, we'd like him to be healthy as fast as possible. This whole thing here, though, how do you read it, D-butt?
14:34Adam Schefter:You know what? That's your guys' fault for jumping to conclusions. Oh, I think he's going to kill him. What? I think it's in need. Watch the game. all right this guy's tough and he's clearly smart he's playing chess right now all right you go down you lay there you don't move you think about it you start your recovery process right then and there you don't take another step you don't put another ounce of weight on this 700 million dollar hamstring so yeah i hope he's full go wednesday practice thursday friday and then shows his ass again on monday so no i don't think any yeah you know what i do think differently about 18.
15:07Adam Schefter:He's tough. I heard he called the boys up after, got into him, called him up, walked out, no boot, no sling, no hot pack, no nothing. I got to be back, man. Tough as nails, smart. Exactly what you want for a quarterback now. That Brian Flores defense, they showed out. They showed up. It was an ugly weather game. I thought they were going to be able to pull it out. They didn't. But we're one and one, and we go on. Like Ty said, we're not staring down 0-2. It's not always me. We're going to battle back from this injury and right behind 18.
15:35Pat McAfee:I'm very happy for Caleb being healthy. And you know what? I didn't even think of him starting his recovery right there on the cart. Smart, right? Watch it. Watch it. Boom. Goes down. Don't move. Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh. But he walked off. Then he didn't take – No, come get me.
15:52Adam Schefter:Come get me. Pick me up. Walk me off. He dragged the leg kind of. Look, walk me off. Drag me off. Look. Look. What did you think in this moment, though, D, but yesterday? What did you think right here? I thought the season was over. I was actually looking at the waiver wire for another 14, but I'm sure it's something you can annul, like a marriage, when you get in there in only a few days. So I could have swapped it out. I thought maybe this was a Madden curse. Maybe this was my curse. But, you know, getting this news from Tom Pellicero, I'm glad he put this out there. So I feel much, much better going into next Monday night because we hate primetime games.
16:22Adam Schefter:No offense to Tyler. I hate primetime games with back quarterbacks. I also hate primetime games with Atlanta Falcons involved. So I feel much better going into this show today over Reaction Monday.
16:32Pat McAfee:Happy Caleb's okay. Let's get to our top five, top five, top five headlines coming out of NFL Week 2 Sunday slate. This is driven by Ram trucks. You know, Ram trucks have the power you need to pull anything, the comfort to make sure you enjoy your life. And whenever you hit that gas pedal, the only sound you hear is... Let's get to the top five, shall we, AJ? Number five, and it's been alluded to a couple times here about teams not having to stare down the 0-2 record. But how about the, oh, no, N2 record? Well, you go all the way back since the AFL-NFL merger, which is 1970, out of over 430 teams that started on N2, only 46 of them have made the postseason.
17:15Pat McAfee:You go through the modern era, 2002 to 2025, out of 200 teams that started on N2, only 24 qualified. That's 12%. Not great. That's a lot higher number not making it than that is actually making it. And now that we have the expanded playoff era where more teams make the playoffs and there's one more game to get back on track, 16 % of teams go on to make the playoffs after starting 0-2. So that leads me to ask this question to you, Mr. A.J. Hawk. Are they 0-2 because we find out that they're absolutely ass, or are they 0-2 because they just haven't figured out how they're supposed to be a team? I guess that would be a question.
17:52Pat McAfee:Me and D-Butt were on a team in 2014 that started 0-2. then we inevitably end up making it to the playoffs. So it's certainly possible. And 16 % is a lot more than 0%. So I'm not giving up hope on anybody. But do we think teams are ass right now? Or do we think they just haven't figured it out? I guess that's a situational conversation that needs to take place, AJ? Yeah, it's definitely situational. And also, like, who your opponent was. But some teams take some time to get going. They've got to find their way and build who their identity might be. And obviously injuries change things as well.
18:22Look at the Falcons, their quarterback situation, the commanders. Now we see what happened with Daniels. The Texans, that one surprises me a bit. If I had to pick one or two teams from this list to actually make the playoffs, I don't know what you guys would think, but I can't see the Texans missing. And the Chargers, I don't know what they are, to be honest with you. But I feel like the Texans, I feel, I don't know, actually. I'm not sure I feel very confident any of these teams making it.
18:42Pat McAfee:Well, we just took Chiefs overtime last night in Arrowhead. Okay, so let's not get too crazy talking about the Indianapolis Colts. I do not like some of the decisions that are being made. okay like it's overtime and we're leaving time on the clock for a guy who's known to win games I mean that's what they change rules right because of it I think because of what he's able to do especially at home on prime time so I hate that we won for the tie there but I think the Colts last night showed me that maybe they're on the road to figuring it out and not being completely ass and being a part of the bigger statistic of not making the playoffs I enjoyed watching the Colts last night.
19:19Pat McAfee:I enjoyed watching Jonathan Taylor ball out. Daniel Jones, Tyler Warren, Josh Dons, Alec Pierce now. Maybe he came back a little bit too early on that heel, and maybe he isn't just a bad walker. Maybe that thing wasn't 100 % yet, and he was pushing it a little bit early. But from the Colts that I saw last night, I was actually rather impressed from how ass they looked against the Ravens. We'll get into that in a second with what they did week two after looking like the world beaters of week one. And then with the Chiefs, you have to have a conversation with them. But D-Butt, I I think some of these 0-2 teams are a little bit different than the others, but there are certainly some teams that I think we can go ahead and notch and say that team ain't winning Super Bowl this year, like the Falcons and the Dolphins, I think.
20:00Adam Schefter:Yeah, coming into this season, like you guys said, Falcons, Dolphins, Titans, I think all three of those teams, we expected some struggle. We expected probably somewhat of a rebuild year. Washington, we thought Jay would be back. Him getting injured, that sucks. Baker, he made all that fuss about getting his money. They come out 0-2, absolutely stink. Very surprised about the Texans. But back to the Colts, like when you go, like you said, you are encouraged. You go to the Chiefs' house and you push them all the way to the wire, which I feel like we play the Chiefs' tough year in and year out. But to get to that point in overtime where you get that chunk play from Treadwell and then you basically say, you know what, we're going to take the field goal and give it back to 15.
Read the full transcript
20:35Adam Schefter:I don't understand that. I know Shane talked about it after the game. And, yeah, it is a tough-ass league, a hard-ass league, whatever Shane said. But when you have an opportunity to go for the juggler, to end the game, to win it in overtime. You made the choice to kick it, which I like that decision. You get the ball back, get down there, and then you just take the foot off the gas and take a field goal. Like, I didn't understand that you have to take this opportunity, empty the clip at this point and try to get this one win to go 1-1 instead of being 0-2. But, yeah, the season's not over. It's not done.
21:05Adam Schefter:Like you said, in 14, we did it. You got hot. We, for whatever reason, started slow, I feel like, every season. But you got to get hot. You got to build some confidence within your locker room, within that team and obviously within the quarterback. But we did look good on offense. Defensively, historically bad start for us. Can we figure it out on this side? Historic, I think all the time. Yes, the worst. As far as points, yards, everything? All of it.
21:28Pat McAfee:Yep. All of it. All the important things. Yikes. Lou? Everything. Yep. The Colts defense now holds the NFL record for most yards allowed in the first two games of a season with a jaw-dropping 1 ,029 yards. The 1976 Seahawks. And they could barely run. You remember that team? Yeah. Oh, yeah. They previously held the record at 800. We blew the right time. Oh, yeah. 884. Jeez. Look, Lamar Jackson, Patrick Mahomes. True. Let's have a little bit of respect with who we had to face. Hopefully, they'll be able to sort it out going forward. But it's not just the Colts. Obviously, Texans, you talked about it down there in the AFC South.
22:05Pat McAfee:AJ thinks that they'll figure it out. We hope that'll happen. We don't know, though, with them, honestly. The defense seemingly good enough to go and win. C.J. Stroud seemingly a good enough quarterback to win. Will they? I don't know. Chargers, what a head scratcher, isn't it?
22:18Adam Schefter:Yeah.
22:19Pat McAfee:That's a big old head scratcher.
22:20Adam Schefter:Dauber's still down. Still down forever.
22:23Pat McAfee:I would say the Dauber's downer than it's ever been. I'd say that Dauber's downer than it's ever been, especially with Harbaugh. And then the Bucs, Falcons, Dolphins, and Titans kind of round out the rest of the 0-2 teams. It's like Falcons, they're historically ass, I think. Pat, do you know the Bucs haven't covered in 11 straight games and they're on a 3-10 run just overall? The Bucs, they were overlooking how bad they've been recently as well. Yeah, and they paid a lot of people down there. And I don't want to point that out, but they did pay a lot of people down there. And just obviously not great when you lose to Cleveland Browns.
22:58Pat McAfee:Anytime that happens, your fans are going to turn on you whenever that team comes to town and beat you, especially if they're waiting out at 2.5. Now let's go to the opposite side of the corn here for number five headline. Two and, oh, yeah, teams, okay, like the lads here have obviously started incredibly hot. Good for them. Philadelphia Eagles. A lot of people donned on the Philadelphia Eagles because of what they and how they had to do it against the Titans. I think you jot that one down as we won in there. Oh, yeah. Afternoon game, brought our own juice. We win against bad team. Let's move on.
23:27Pat McAfee:That just feels like what the Eagles have been. You know, it's just like the Chiefs with the stat that's come out about them, being able to obviously hit for you if you're on a money line. But very rarely do the Chiefs ever cover because in your brain they're a lot better than they actually end up killing teams. It feels like the Eagles are the same. You'll see them in close games. They'll end up winning it. It feels like they have that winning trait, that winning mantra. And I think they're just pumped to get out of Nashville with a dub. Let's get back home and continue to the roll. But some of these teams, Con Man, and you pointed this out in the 2-0 yeah graphic, Like Bengals, Raiders, Eagles, they've all beat teams that are 0-2.
24:04Pat McAfee:Yeah. So, like, what wins are real, what wins are not real? I still feel like we don't know. But stats tell us that the 2-0-YAS squads 75 % of the time end up making the playoffs. That's a much better situation than losing either of these first two. Conman, it's a wild thing that, you know, some of these 2-0 teams we feel really good about. Then you dive into it and it's like schedule merchants, potentially. You heard it all last year, Conman. Yeah, no doubt about it, but you still got to win them. I think no matter what, if you're 2-0 and you're bitching and moaning, then you're just not really kind of encapsulating the whole season.
24:36The Eagles haven't looked good, sure, but those two wins early on might get them to 12-13 when they end up figuring it out. The biggest one from here is the Bengals for me. The Bengals we've talked about historically bad starters, but now they're winning games with their defense. And Stroud still threw for 350 yards, sure, but if they become a defense that's bend, don't break, and they're forcing field goals and they're getting stops in the red zone, they're going to win a bunch of games, especially because Joe Burrow and Jamar Chase, what they are still doing on offense, we kind of expect. But the fact that they're holding teams to points in the red zone that aren't touchdowns, that is massive.
25:15They gave up the Houston Texans. They scored 31 points last week. It's not like their offense is –
25:20Pat McAfee:What was that? Yeah, what was that? What did Jamar Chase – was that a hammer? Did he, like, throw a hammer down there? after the touchdown? I thought he was like flopping dice. It's kind of like a dice roll, but more forward. An absolutely phenomenal catch. The body control. What's that one right there? Is that an elephant trunk maybe? Could be. I remember everything. All the little kids are going to be doing it now.
25:44Adam Schefter:It's pretty cool. Yeah, is that a one, like a first down touchdown?
25:48Pat McAfee:Yeah. Is he saying this like, my bottom half from my elbow down stronger than anybody. Did you see that catch I just made? Was he saying it's really big? Was he saying it from his – Big old heavy flopper, yeah. He's saying his forearm is super heavy. I'm able to make these types of catches. And then I think he went right into the gritty, which I respect and appreciate. But, yeah, I agree with what you're saying there, Con, man. And to reiterate your point on the defensive side, pro football focus, who it is what it is, they got Sexy Dexie as the highest rated interior lineman in the entire NFL.
26:20Pat McAfee:Remember, New York Giants move on from Sexy Dexie. and in this new hardball era, send him to Cincinnati. And as soon as he gets there, he's allegedly a leader in the locker room. And now immediately the defense is much better than they were last year, especially at the line of scrimmage. It's crazy how one big influential piece can change an entire tone and a culture of a defense, AJ, especially Dexter Lawrence. Well, I think especially as a defense and a team that has been getting killed, we know how they've had slow starts in the past and their defense hasn't really held up. When you can start out 2-0 and your defense is a big reason of why you're winning, that's contagious.
26:56There's a trickle down through the whole team, and I think it only breeds more and more confidence amongst that defense and the coordinator feels more comfortable coming after the quarterback. There's something about it. When your defense is playing hot, especially early in the year, you know the offense you have with Joe Burrow. If they stay healthy, the sky's the limit.
27:13Pat McAfee:D, but with Big Dexie coming to town, what's that mean for the back end?
27:17Adam Schefter:I mean, that helps you. Obviously, we can get interior pressure against the quarterback, Sexy Dexie, And then Jonathan Allen as well, who is showing up in between the lines and also in that locker room. You know, like AJ said, when you have that toughness up front, it does breed confidence in that entire team. Because the offense, they're going to show up. T. Higgins, Jamar Chase, Joe Burrell, those guys are going to show up week in and week out. So as long as that defense can be at least manageable, and then if they can go out and actually start pitching shutouts or getting close to that, it's only going to get better for the Bengals.
27:45Adam Schefter:And that's a team who historically it feels like always starts 0-2 or 1-3 to get out of the gates and then kind of pick up as they get later on in the season. But so them starting fast out of the gate is huge. And obviously the defense being a big part of it. Because they hear it. Everybody hears it. Everybody needs to build and hear everything that we and other people on microphones say about them year in and year out, week in and week out. So for them to show up early, this is big.
28:08Pat McAfee:Hey, not just big for the Bengals and obviously Raiders. Congratulations. The Raiders getting two wins. Kirk Cousins. I love that. I absolutely love what they're doing. The Eagles, obviously, we talked about them. Buffalo Bills have an alien. So do the Kansas City Chiefs. Let's talk about the alien that we love, the Carson Wentz experience. 2-0 for the Vikings, winning 9-3. Now, Flores' defense, is it Flores? Because Tomlin, who hired him and had him on staff, said Flores last night. I think I've heard it multiple times as Flores, but I've always said Flores. I think B-Flow is an easier way to get us out of here, but whatever the case, B-Flow holds Ben Johnson's offense to three points.
28:49Pat McAfee:Now, in the middle of a downpour, who cares? Still shuts them out, basically, if it wasn't for great field goal by Cairo. And then on the offensive side, Carson Wentz leads them to another dub without turning the ball over too much, without too much Carson Wentz stuff, in the middle of a downpour. At one point, I saw him throw a ball directly into the chest of a Chicago Bears DB. on the next play, pump fake, jump, spin move, bang, out the other side. It was like the Carson Wentz experience was certainly happening, but them being undefeated in that NFC North with Carson Wentz as their starting quarterback, who knows what the future looks like.
29:23Pat McAfee:Ty, you just went on a whole tangent about the Packers being ass. Are the Vikings the team to be scared of in the NFC North right now? As of right now, yes. That was actually the first thing I said this morning when I came, and I said, wow, did I wildly underestimate the Vikings' defense especially. I mean, you hear all about Brian Flores, but until you actually watch it and see it firsthand two weeks in a row, they looked very impressive. And I think this was the way the weather was in Chicago, everything we had heard about the Bears. This was like the picture SIK. Carson Wentz is going to go out there and he's going to have five turnovers.
29:57He's going to throw three interceptions. He's going to fumble it a bunch. And he did exactly what he needed to do. That stat came up about Kevin O 'Connell with his record with all the different quarterbacks that he's won with. And I think that was the big thing going in this year. Everyone was saying, hey, pressure's going to be on Kevin O 'Connell with how Sam Darnold's doing. And he just, you know, being married up with that Brian Flores defense and his offense, like, he just wins. And, you know, for them to not even have their starting quarterback who everyone was excited about and for them to be 2-0 and have two division wins nonetheless, like, yeah, if you're in the NFC North, I think as of right now, it does run through Minnesota.
30:37Pat McAfee:Seahawks absolutely pined. Absolutely pined out there in the NFC West. And then the 49ers as well. I'll tell you, the teams that we thought were potentially very good, certainly still proving to be. Baltimore Ravens let me die. I'm going to be honest. Baltimore Ravens let me die big time after what we saw them do the Indianapolis Colts week one. I guess they're still learning. What was the deal with not giving the ball to Derrick Henry in the second half? Man, who knows? That's what they do. That's what they do. He uses multiple coaching staffs now, though. I don't know how that carries over. Like, how does Minter not – I mean, he has to.
31:09Pat McAfee:And Minter's on the defensive side, so he's probably saying, hey, Declan, you kind of handle your thing. You do what you got to do. But, like, the stats, whenever you don't give Derrick Henry the ball in the second half and what happens versus the stats when you give him the ball in the second half and what happens, it's just like – it's alarming that they continue to do – I don't get it. I don't – I genuinely – New school dudes. Yep. Yeah, well, Chuck Pagano and all the older head coach, ex-old coaches and coordinators, certainly are eagerly watching these young coordinators, both on the offensive side and defensive side, as this 2026 season continues to roll on.
31:43Pat McAfee:49ers looked unbelievable. Okay, let's go to the number four headline as we're 31 minutes into the show doing a top five, and we just got through number five. This is always the issue. Remember, we're going to put time. Yeah, first 15. Number four headline, the dogs have a day. We talked about the Browns. Congrats to Deshaun Watson and Todd Munkin getting their first win together and Deshaun's first win in like 100 years. Money line plus 350 you could have got them before the game. Then the Saints, Tyler Shuck. The only reason why they didn't tie the week before and they have a loss on their schedule is because they chose to go for two in overtime as opposed to hitting an extra point to tie the game and have everybody in football hate it.
32:21Pat McAfee:So Kelly Moe, Tyler Shuck, not only late in games have been magical, but together I think they're magical. They just paid Chris Olave this past offseason, and people were like, wow, that's a lot of money for Chris Olave. Well, it turns out Chris Olave and Tyler Shuck are the number one tandem in the NFL right now. And Tyler Shuck, what he's doing late and what he's doing in these games to keep them in it at such a young age, well, he's actually very old, young in his NFL career, though, special stuff for Kellen Moore. For a lot of years, the Saints were expected just to be asked because their salary cap hell and the way everything was kind of set up, and they've been going through a transition era seemingly for five, six years.
32:55Pat McAfee:and now it feels like they got their pillars, they got their staples, and they got their quarterback, D-butt. This Tyler Shuck guy can shuck the shucking ball. I mean, it's special to watch him out of Louisville and how everybody kind of passed him up. I think they got him in, what, the third round, and they were expecting him to be a starter somehow, and he's lived up to every expectation, and Kelly Moe has a good team early.
33:16Adam Schefter:Yeah, I think they got in the second round. He came on late last year. He showed and played some good ball, and we all know running out of that tunnel, Like, if you don't have confidence in your quarterback as a football team, as an organization, as a fan base, you don't really have a chance. So, breeding that confidence, building this confidence very early with Tyler Shuck. Absolutely love what Kelly Mose doing as well. You come in, you draft Jordan Tyson. The hopes are high with him coming out. He gets hurt. You pay Chris Olave. He's been showing up. I love everything about this Saints team, what they show early on.
33:45Adam Schefter:And you talk about these big-time plays down the stretch. You're throwing me off back here. But, yeah, Shug is showing out, man. I'm excited about these things. Like you said, it could be 2-0. Going for two, and then the bullshit call with Garrett Goff with the intention and all that. That played a huge role. So that Saints fan base, they are hot right now.
34:05Pat McAfee:As they should be. And we know that's home field advantage down there in New Orleans if they were to get going. And then the Raiders, congratulations to them, 2-0. I think that's dream start for them with Kirk Cousins. And, obviously, their number one overall pick sitting in tow, kind of waiting for his time. Kirk Cousins, obviously great. Gentry, what a stud. Crosby getting a safety, just so genius. Remember, he wasn't supposed to be on this team. Nope. Crosby wasn't supposed to be on the Baltimore Ravens. Instead, Ravens say, no, we don't want to do this. Max Crosby comes back, puts out a song called Raider Wave.
34:37Pat McAfee:Feels like the football gods blessed him. And then, obviously, he's still exactly who everybody says he is. And he knew exactly what he was doing here. If I get on the outside of this guy, I get a hold in the end zone. This is safety. High football IQ. Great for him. Let's go to the number three headline. And this one's a little bit disappointing, I'm going to be honest. I don't like that this is happening, but we have an infestation of the injury. Somebody needs to go call the road route or whatever the pest control. There it is. There it is. Orkin. Yeah, get the orkin out. Spray these things.
35:09Pat McAfee:The injury bug is going crazy. Everybody's been bitten by this thing seemingly. Now, granted, we know Caleb Williams is in a much better position now than we thought whenever he was getting carted out with a towel over his head as he was fist bumping a crowd that was seemingly celebrating him having to go through some seizing-ending type injury. Happy he's okay. Happy he rallied. Jaden Daniels' injury, same elbow. That was disgusting. They said they got some good news out of that. I don't know how that's even possible. And I'm sick of my algo feeding me his elbow. Okay? It is out of my face. I don't like any of that.
35:41Pat McAfee:But you're talking about a lot of stars here that have been injured early. D-Bot, what are your thoughts on the injuries? Do we think this is just how football always is and we forget about it until it happens in real time? But two big quarterbacks going down week two, Sam Darnold going down week one, literally in the opening game. It feels like we do have a bit of an injury bug infestation here early.
36:00Adam Schefter:Yeah, we always hate it. A lot of people try to, I guess, attribute it to different things, not playing in the preseason, the short and offseason. But it's football and guys are going to get hurt. And when big name guys get hurt, it makes bigger news. obviously when they had starting quarterbacks. Remember that year, I think two or three years ago, you had 60 or 70 quarterbacks getting out there starting, especially on the prime time game. So it's just a part of the game. Unfortunately, you want to see the best players out there playing their best ball when it matters the most. But it's a 100 % injury rate.
36:27Adam Schefter:Everybody that's out there playing is going to get hurt. And once we get towards the middle and the end of the season, everybody's dealing with issues. It's just part of the violent nature of the game that we play. And it sucks, man. But getting some good news, obviously, from Caleb. I wonder what the good news is with Jaden. I think it was not being a fracture and it just being a dislocation. But with that elbow, I think this is the third time now he's injured at elbow. But, yeah, week in and week out, you're going to see these injuries. And when they're bigger names, obviously it's going to be bigger news.
36:54Pat McAfee:Ladies and gentlemen, huge news. There's a playmaker here. What? A playmaker here. The playmaker. Oh, my God. How are you, dude? So good to see you, bro. Yes, you too. Here, will you put this on? Bro, man. Okay, great to see you. I was like, wait a minute. Stop playing, man. They told me you called over there and he said I had to go. I said, no, no, no. I'm running right over here. Come on. Making sure. Pat, you know you my brother. We just got different mothers, but we the same mother brother. You see what I'm saying? You know what I'm saying? I would say the same. I would say the same. I would have to understand.
37:32Pat McAfee:I do appreciate that. That's an honor to be put in the same category as you. We're going through our top five headlines from yesterday. Number three headline is the injury bug infestation. We saw Sam Donald go down week one. Now, obviously, Caleb, hamstring. Right. Okay, great news that it's a hamstring. Man, that didn't look like a hamstring there for a little bit with the way he was acting. Happy he got carted off and started his recovery of his hamstring early. Yeah, Jaden Daniels goes down. Your thoughts on the injuries? It feels like it's every year. Is that how we should just view it, or why do you think it kind of takes?
38:03You know, man, I have said this so many times. Like, I don't understand how you can ramp up without ramping up. Like, how do you step into game one and you haven't had any game practice? So, you know, and let me tell you. Let me tell you what happened, guys. When you say to someone, you're not playing in any preseason games. You don't just lose that game day. You lose the whole week because I'm not going to focus like I need to if I know I'm not playing in a game. It's impossible to do it. Don't tell me I can focus hard. I can put the word in. It's impossible unless I got the fear of Somebody else making me look real bad in front of a whole lot of people I ain't don't search all up and down and everywhere to play my best and that's what's happening It's not just the game you don't play you lose the whole week of practice
38:59Pat McAfee:Okay, so you think the modern setup is kind of a detriment to the safety and health Absolutely You're playing in all these control practices, and then all of a sudden, you've got to go get comfortable in the midst of chaos, and you have not been in chaos. Yes, I think it's a detriment. Yeah, you've got to at least visit chaos a couple times before you get thrown in. Make him your buddy. Yeah. Make him your buddy. Chaos, pressure, you've got to have – they've all got to be your best friend. Physicality. You've got to be warning. Oh, yeah. Defense is week one. More points than ever. And Jim would always say this.
39:35We're going to get you in a game, and somebody's going to have a little thumbnail and be talking about, ouch, I'm hurting, because you haven't been hit all season. That's what I think. That's so funny because I heard Coach Harbaugh over with the Chargers say, I wish we would have played in some preseason games because you're an old school coach. They let them bring you new school, and you see this new school ain't working. And that other hardball, that old school coach beat down on my Cowboys because they were practicing hard. Yes, they were.
40:03Pat McAfee:They went to West Virginia in the middle of nowhere to go beat the shit out of each other during training camp. I mean, you're talking two different trains. I thought, okay, let's go to the number two headline, shall we? Hot out the gate for the MVP conversation. Now, we do believe that teams can start out terrible and get good. But for the MVP, with the stats you're going to need, I think you can't waste the first two weeks. Here are some guys we think are hot out the gate. Obviously, Josh Allen, absurd. Brock Purdy has been cerebral. Obviously, you look down Bryce Young getting an opportunity to get a conversation for what he did yesterday against the Falcons and how he started.
40:36Pat McAfee:Dak Prescott becomes the all-time leader in pass yards for the Dallas Cowboys. What an insane thing. And then Joey Burrow in the offense has been going crazy. Any of these guys you see that you like? Obviously, Dak Prescott, huge for the Cowboys. Yeah, and I love that you put him in here. I don't have to talk him up in here. That means you ain't like everybody else with this built-in hate for Dak. The man has been playing, and he's played some great football. But now, out of that group, there are two people I want to pull out and look at. First, Bryce Young. Man, and I had Bryce Young on one of my other shows.
41:10I love him. The White House? The White House. Hey, great show. I appreciate you saying that, bro. I appreciate it. And I got it. When you get out of L.A., we're going to have to sit down and chop it up over there. In L.A. right now. But I love this dude. You're in L.A.
41:28But you're here to work right now. You're here to work. When you get some time, come on back now. We're going to do it. But, man, I'm telling you, and I didn't know him and McMillan had known each other for so long and wanting to play together for so long, and now they are together. I really like Bryce. But you've got to give all of this to Josh Allen. Right now, Josh Allen, I measure men in distance travel. Don't tell me about where you are. Tell me about where you started. Let me see where you are. I'll measure you accordingly. From seeing Josh Allen crying tears of pain to watching his great game and what he's doing right now, yeah, I'm going to put it on Josh Allen.
42:06Pat McAfee:You're the greatest. Yeah. Is that where you were to where you are? That is how I can tell you. Right. You got to measure a mental distance travel. Absolutely. You know what I mean? So even if your dad gave you a billion dollars and you turned it to a hundred billion, you's a bad brother. You understand what I'm saying? Now, if he gave you a billion and you got a billion won, oh, you's a chump. You understand what I'm saying? So what distance did you travel before I give you any flowers? Okay, I love it. We should give you all the flowers anytime you're on a microphone. I hope you continue to feel that.
42:40Pat McAfee:Back in the studio, D-Butt, your thoughts on the Hot Out the Gate horses and also Playmaker being right here. I think we could probably ask him anything that we need to do right now.
42:49Adam Schefter:Absolute legend. Love the graphic with the Hot Out the Gate guys. but it's a guy missing. I think two guys missing, actually. Drew Locke, backup quarterback out in Seattle, 2-0 right now, then a receiver that he's throwing to, reigning offensive player of the year. Playmaker, what makes Jackson Smith and Jigaba so special out there and wide receiver? Dude, this guy's ability to change direction is incredible. And it's so funny. I watched him work out with Malachi Tony, and they were working on these new slant routes. I mean, I watched Malik Atoni put that into play in a game. And this dude here is phenomenal, man.
43:29JSN has been phenomenal. Move him all over the football field. Anywhere he can catch the ball quick and take it the distance, he can run right by you. So he's been a phenomenal player. Don't matter about the quarterback. The results will be the same.
43:43Pat McAfee:Hey, I have a question for you now because they showed on Hard Knocks his routes. You know how they all look the exact same? Whenever you were running routes, I feel like that is a new school type of thing, working on the routes all look the same, shoulders staying at the same elevation, altitude, everything, yada, yada, yada. Were you guys working on all that shit? How do you think the position has changed over the years? It's changed so much, and that's such a great question because we've gone from man beating man to systems beating systems. JSN has moved all around on the football field, but he'll go inside.
44:15He'll sit between two linebackers. he'll play all of that inside. I personally just wanted to play outside and beat up a corner. You know, bring your butt out here, bro. Let me tear your butt up. You see what I'm saying? I didn't want to be inside with all those big linebackers that all let us roam. Get me one dude out here that's about my size and I can put it on him. JSN, those guys, they're better than me because they can play inside. And when you play inside, it's not just about knowing how to get open. It's best you know when to be open. because the quarterback's reading here and here, and then he's coming to you late.
44:51You got to know when to get open, not just how to get open. And he's great at it.
44:55Pat McAfee:Yeah, when not only just you're going to get to him late, but also early. You got to get open early if you're the number one read on that system because if not, they're looking to get past you immediately. Quarterbacks obviously have to read some things, but the systems that you're talking about, it does feel like they figure it out a little bit. You know? Right. Hey, you're going here, you're going here. A lot of the old quarterbacks say it's simpler football, but then you talk to these younger guys, it's like, yeah, right, They're making like a thousand more decisions in real time. In real time.
45:18And it is because it requires more shoulders up than shoulders down. It's more of a decision as opposed to my physical skill set making a play. And that's why the Brock Purdy's, I got to give Brock credit because they want to try to say, oh, he's just a system quarterback. Brock has taken a hell of a step up and is playing great football.
45:39Pat McAfee:Yeah, Brock Purdy is cerebral right now. The 49ers might be the best-looking team in ball. Congrats to George Kittle, by the way. Yeah. He looks better than ever. And then number one headline coming out of the weekend, the Chiefs is still the Chiefs. Okay. They're 2-0 now. What they did to the Denver Broncos week one was outrageous. And then last night, a dogfight with the Indianapolis Colts. Travis Kelsey looks younger than ever. He becomes the all-time leader in the Yak in the history of the NFL. And he leads the current NFL in Yak at the age of 36 or whatever. He's a massive piece. Kenneth Walker feels like a weapon that Andy Reid and Eric Biennium and Patrick Mahomes have been looking for maybe for their entire tenure.
46:17Pat McAfee:And then Patrick Mahomes looks like he's back to being exactly who we thought he was. Yeah, Kenneth Walker, I was like, he looks way better than he ever looked in Seattle right now. I mean, this dude looks phenomenal. I mean, I was like, wow. To see they're getting the same results, and Patrick Mahomes has never, ever had this. You know, they spent years trying to replace Tyreek Hill. This is how you replace Tyreek Hill. You make everybody come up in this line of scrimmage, and then you can make all the plays you need to make. That dude right there is the difference maker right now. AJ. They had 24 seconds with three timeouts, and Patrick Mahomes turned around and handed that ball off.
46:57That shocked me last night.
46:58Pat McAfee:Yeah, and did it shock you, too, that we decided to kick a field goal to tie that thing with Patrick Mahomes on the other sideline in Arrowhead with three minutes to win that thing? Isn't that kind of what he does? Towards the end where it was like 39, right? You say you should have taken that 39. Do anything. Just don't give that ball back. Exactly. Like he's going to get the ball back. I think we all knew what was going to happen immediately. Yeah. And they thought about it. They thought about it. But, yeah, you just think. We don't want to believe that Patrick Mahomes is still Patrick Mahomes.
47:26A lot of us have tried to put dirt on him and cover him up and say he's home. Oh, you said he's dead? Yeah, yeah. You never said that? Well, a lot of people have said that. And let me tell you something. And Travis Kelsey, boy, I know, trust me, what some good sleep and some good structure can do for you. You know what I'm saying? I know, bro. I'm trying to tell you. Travis Kelsey has been sleeping. He's been eating right. He's structured. And he looks younger this year than he ever looked the last two years at least right now after he's gotten married. So, Taylor Swift, you're doing a good thing, girl.
48:04Pat McAfee:Great thing for Ball. Great thing for the Chiefs. Great time. People are saying maybe he was in wedding shape, you know. Maybe he came in the season wedding shape. Whatever the case, maybe he's just in like, hey, I'm having the time of my life right now. I was up in that suite that they all watch the game from. Everybody in there is following every single snap. They love Ball. Everybody's so supportive. It's like Travis is living the dream right now, I think, and he's playing like it as well. And I love Travis, bro. That's one of my favorite dudes in the whole National Football League. I always love him.
48:32I got to know him when he first came over to the Pro Bowl. I coached him. He was like, Michael, you got to draft me. You got to draft me. And I did draft him, right? And he spent all week with my son, Michael, who's a tight end. And for me, that was everything. He's been my favorite player in the NFL since then. He's just a great dude, so I'm happy for him.
48:53Pat McAfee:Good idea to get Travis Kelsey instruction out there for your kid. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I'll draft Travis, yeah. Yeah, right, right. But he gravitated. He said, I got you. I got them. I said, okay, I'm going to get you some passes in the game.
49:09I was undefeated over that coaching. So, you know, don't get it twisted.
49:13Pat McAfee:Hey, you're working deals. That's not a bad idea. You've got to get these guys a try somehow in the Pro Bowl. You look good, bro. Come on. Don't keep putting that thing in, boy. Don't let them know. Live on my model. My model is I'm going to get all of my time and every damn dime out of this body. You understand what I'm saying? Thank you. All of my time. You're the absolute best. And every damn time. We appreciate you, man. Ladies and gentlemen. I appreciate it, brother. The legend icon. The playmaker, Michael Irvin. Yeah, Michael.
49:44Adam Schefter:It's Broward's fun.
49:45Pat McAfee:You guys are the best. It's Broward's fun. Okay. I had no idea that was happening. That's awesome. What a treat. As soon as he walks up, you just kind of feel it. Now, on that note, there's a man that's been waiting because that all happened. Joining us now, man, is probably very okay with everything that just took place, especially with how much information he's probably trying to learn in this exact moment. Senior NFL insider for ESPN, Adam Schefter. Adam Schefter! Tell me what's going on. Schefter, very, very sorry that you had to wait there, but obviously that is... Let me go ahead and get me in here.
50:20Pat McAfee:And we're here. Natasha. Giants, Rams, big one Monday Night Football. Can't wait to talk to you about that. Is Aaron Donald officially playing? But let's go back through the weekend. A lot of injuries this weekend, you know, follows up an injury-riddled week one as well. Any updates on any of the players that you see from the week two injury report? Caleb Williams, we've heard through Tom Pellicero, is that they are, it's not as bad as they thought. Maybe he plays on Monday. Jaden Daniels, they said the same thing. Any more updates on these guys that you have, Shefty? Ben Johnson said Caleb Williams is likely going to miss time.
50:52So we'll see how that works out here. That's the first one on Caleb Williams. Now, last night, he felt pretty good. This morning, he was in a lot more pain than he was last night. So we'll see how the hamstring evolves over time here. But again, it doesn't sound like Ben Johnson is counting on him for next Monday night's game, unless he can somehow make it back in time. Jaden Daniels, they're still going over the medical opinions on this. There are going to be a lot of different schools of thought. It is a dislocated left elbow. It sounds like a similar timeline to last year. But again, they're going through this right now with all the medical professionals and still gathering together opinions.
51:43I don't think he wants to do any surgery on the elbow that would stabilize it. But I'm not telling you that that's off the table either because who knows what a doctor is going to say or who knows what somebody around him. is going to say. They're still in the gathering stages right now. It certainly sounds like it's going to be a few weeks. But, again, still gathering information. He also, like Caleb Williams, had the MRI done this morning. Team going through it. Both teams going through it. And we'll see where it nets out.
52:18Pat McAfee:Okay, let's turn to tonight. Monday Night Football. Giants traveling here to SoFi Stadium. It's beautiful. I can't thank the people enough for the setup that they've given us here with an incredible view. Let's talk about tonight, though, Aaron Donald. Is he officially playing? Because he said the plan is to play. They said they haven't made a decision. I don't think I've seen an official ruling on Aaron Donald. He's certainly the story of the evening if he was to be returning after a two-year retirement hiatus. And what does he look and how bad do the Rams need him seemingly in a big way? Where do we sit on that?
52:48Well, I think he's going to play. That's the plan. I think that'll be part of the story. Part of the story will be Miles Garrett not playing, and part of the story will be Puka Nakua status. And it certainly sounds like Puka's trending towards not playing tonight against the Giants. So we'll see how it goes. Now, they're not giving up hope that he can go out and pregame warm-ups feel good, lights are on, and all of a sudden he decides to play. But it doesn't sound promising right now that Puka's going to be available for the Rams, which would be obviously a huge deal. Jordan Whittington, another wide receiver, is doubtful.
53:20So you don't expect him to play. so they could be down Puka Nakua and Jordan Whittington going into tonight's game in a game where Miles Garrett's on IR, but the plan is to have Aaron Donald come back. Now, not having Puka, I mean, that would leave the Rams with a crew of wide receivers that would be different than what we would have thought they would have had. So we'll see if they can overcome that tonight against a tough Giants team.
53:45Pat McAfee:Okay, tough Giants team, obviously, I think what people would say is their weakness is maybe their secondary or back end. Without Puka Nakua, obviously the Rams' offense looks a bit different. Diggs has a question for you about maybe the future primetime games that are ahead. Yes, Shefty, obviously it has been good for the Falcons so far with Cooper Rush as their starting quarterback, and their next three games are on primetime. As primetime watchers, are we going to have to keep seeing Cooper Rush, or are we going to see Penix or Tua in these next few weeks? I think that they're going to try to get Penix back on the field here Thursday night at Green Bay.
54:17They have the short week. they have yet to run a play in the red zone so far this season the Falcons they have not gotten to the red zone so far which is pretty amazing they play the Packers this week and then they have an extra day the following week to play at New Orleans before that Sunday night football game against the Ravens so three prime time games here coming up the feeling has been that they would have a chance to get back, Penix and Tua, on Thursday night. And I think with the way that the game unfolded yesterday, I would expect that at least one of those guys will be back on Thursday night.
54:52And I think that they would hope that Penix makes it back to start against the Green Bay Packers.
54:57Pat McAfee:I mean, they're calling them both cheeks down there. The Atlanta Falcons' Twitter has been phenomenal, I would say. Absolutely phenomenal. This is a tough hole for Stefanski to kind of build him or dig himself out of here. Matt Ryan as president. Stefanski gets hired almost immediately after being let go from the Browns. They said, well, the Browns are the problem. Browns are the problem. They have two quarterbacks. They have no quarterbacks. They have three quarterbacks. Now they have four quarterbacks. Jack Strand comes in, throws the ball off the middle of a guy's chest. It gets picked off on his first passing attempt.
55:26Pat McAfee:I don't think that's fair. Then he had a ball slip out of his hand. I don't think that's fair either. I mean, I don't think Jack Strand necessarily deserved to come in down 30 to start this entire thing. But this has been very bad to start a new era in Atlanta. Obviously going to have to dig from the bottom up. Now, there's certainly a question about a team out here in Los Angeles, though. Ty has a question for you. Yeah, Shefty, obviously it's early, but what's the cause of concern for the Chargers? Just things do not look good. I think we saw the last time Jim Harbaugh has started 0-2 was in 2002 when he was a backup quarterback, and everything kind of just stinks out there right now.
56:02What do you know about that entire situation, especially because their next seven to eight games are insanely tough. Yeah, it's a gauntlet when you look at their schedule ahead. And those were supposed to be the easy, winnable games early on, opening up against Arizona at home, then playing the Raiders at home. Now you take a look at the schedule. Next seven games at Buffalo, at Seattle, home for Denver, at Kansas City, at the Rams versus the Texans. I mean, that is a brutal schedule. And when you go into that 0-2, that's even more challenging. But, you know, Jim Harbaugh, after the game, said like he felt like the team was going in the right direction now that he saw some things he was encouraged by.
56:47So, I mean, I guess that's good. But you can't look at this team that lost both its coordinators. They made a change on the offensive side, brought in Mike McDaniel. They lost Jesse Minter on the defensive side. And it's just not clicking. They've been out physical. They've been outplayed. They've been, it's been one of the early season surprises so far that the Cardinals and Raiders will go in and have their way with the Chargers, who now sit with an 0-2 record with that gauntlet of a schedule ahead here in the coming weeks.
57:18Pat McAfee:Okay, and on the other side, the Raiders are 2-0. Connor has a question about them. Yeah, Shefty, Raiders are absolutely rolling right now. Is there a chance Kirk just rides this entire season out if they continue to win him and Mendoza just gets an entire year to watch Kirk Cousins? and also is there a Brock Bowers update? Because seemingly kind of thought he was going to play, then he didn't. Is he definitely going to be back next week? Well, in regards to Bowers, Clint Kubiak said after the game yesterday that he was really close, thought he had a chance this past week, and I would be surprised if Bowers weren't back on the field this week for the Raiders.
57:51Kirk Cousins, look, the plan with them always, always, has been to have him out there as long as he's playing well and they're winning games. Well, he's playing well. He's playing exceptionally well right now, and they're winning games. So as long as those two factors keep happening, he's going to keep playing quarterback. And if it goes on all season long, the Raiders will be thrilled because they get the wins in the standings, and they get the win of sitting Mendoza and not having to rush him along and to take their time with him. And every win they get buys them more time to have Fernando on the bench right now shooting whatever commercials it is that he's doing these days.
58:27and they love the way Cousins is playing and the fact that they're winning games right now. This is working out as well as they could have hoped so far in two weeks.
58:39Pat McAfee:Yeah, I'd say anytime you have a quarterback conversation to start the season undefeated is certainly a great one. Let's go away from the Raiders and let's go over to the NFC North. AJ has a question about the undefeated Minnesota Vikings. Yeah, Shefty, obviously the Vikings 2-0, Kyla Murray in concussion protocol. I assume still any updates on him and when he might be back on the field? I think they expect that he's in a clear protocol this week if there are no setbacks and that he would be able to be back on the field next week. Now, again, they're 2-0 as well, and they're playing pretty well.
59:08But, again, I think the feeling would be to go back to Kyler at some point in time here, and it sounds like that could happen as soon as this week.
59:15Pat McAfee:Okay, so Kyler's going to go back out even though Carson Wentz is undefeated. That's like taking points off the board. Mm-hmm. Is that what you're saying, Chef D? I think that, well, they want to get a look at Kyler, and Carson's played well, and Carson's done his job. Carson's done exactly what he should have done. But I think they believe in Kyler, and they want to get back to Kyler, and I think that's going to happen as early as this week. Who do the Vikings play this week? Let me just see my schedule here. Minnesota plays at Tampa. Ooh, against what's going to be an angry Buccaneers team that got humiliated yesterday.
59:49Yeah. Yep.
59:50Pat McAfee:Yeah, two-and-a-half-hour delay, and then you need a red zone drive to beat the Cleveland Browns. Instead, the Cleveland Browns come out, lock it down. Now, Baker Mayfield over the last 11 games and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers haven't been fantastic. Maybe they turn it around against the Vikings and Kyler Murray. Last question here comes from D. Butt on some updates.
1:00:08Adam Schefter:Yeah, another undefeated team, Super Bowl champs, the Seattle Seahawks. They've been playing with their backup, Drew Locke, and he's been playing well. But do we have an update on their starting quarterback, Sam Darnold? making progress uh we'll have a chance a chance to come back this week but again they're in a position where they don't have to rush him along drew lock is playing great through the three touchdown passes yesterday to jackson smith and jigba and they want to make sure that donald is well before they bring him back out there this isn't an own two team right now has to win if it takes an extra week or so with donald great but he's i think coming along quicker than they hoped making progress and I would think that you might see him back on the practice field some we'll see if he can make it back for the game this week or not anything we miss Shefty uh Avante Maddox the Lions cornerback out for the year not good foot injury uh Brian Branch and Kirby Joseph still not ready Branch is a little bit closer at this point in time than Kirby Joseph.
1:01:09So that's not great. Yeah. We'll see some of these injuries today. Jaden Reed, some of the other things.
1:01:19Pat McAfee:You're the man. We appreciate you. See you tonight. That's Adam Schefter. Say baby, Schefter. Schefter didn't seem to have as much juice. You think it's because of the injuries that got him a little bit of his dauber done? I noticed that. Yeah, maybe his dauber is done. Oh, bummed that. Somebody just said they wanted me to get Kirk on live on air? What does that mean? Jesus Christ. What does that mean? You know. Well, I think a lot of people are saying a lot of stuff on the internet. Like, I don't say like things, and then they just say, this is what he just said, and people are like, yeah, that is what he just said.
1:01:50Pat McAfee:It's like, no, I did not say that. Can we please maybe? Somebody just said they were. That's craziness. Yeah. I hope it doesn't happen, by the way, and if it doesn't, I'll see you next hour.

1:03:07Pat McAfee:Hello beautiful people and welcome back to this glorious Overreaction Monday, September 21st, 2026. Our tour of the sports program begins right now. Football is the greatest and joining us now is a man who knows what good football looks like. He is a man who will certainly say things whenever he is asked to say things. He will also say things when he's not asked to say things. A guy who says things all football season, all day long. Ladies and gentlemen, friend of the program, dangerous to say that these days, Dan Orlowski.
1:03:50Why is it dangerous to say?
1:03:52Pat McAfee:Well, you really did it this time. So what were you talking about the way it looks like with the quarterback thing? You know, because we have some questions. It's not just me here with Dan, obviously. Back at the Thunderdome, you got college football national champion, Super Bowl champion, Ryder Cup winner, A.J. Hawkins. Hoggle. Hawkins. Nine-year NFL vet, former teammate of Dan Orlovsky. My quarterback. Whoa, that's big right now. What the quarterback's supposed to look like right there.
1:04:22Adam Schefter:What's that mean? Hell yeah. Unreal. I don't know what that means.
1:04:26Pat McAfee:Toxic tables here at Boston Corner and at Ty Schmidt. Obviously, one half of the hammer. Cowboys, AP, Tony's here. Dan, let's just get into it. What is good quarterback supposed to look like? If you could go into as much detail as possible, I think that'd be good for all parties. And if you have anything to clarify, just kind of let us know. And by the way, come on, you. Fix your tie, by the way. You look like an idiot. That's the cool relax look. You don't look like an idiot. Yeah, I never listen to anything. See all your buttons. Okay, so one before I came on I was on the phone with my wife She's like hey Pat said that he was going to ask you some of the things that happened last week What do you think he's talking about?
1:05:09I was like, what do you think he's thinking of talking about? She's like, well, can you ask him not to I go no
1:05:14Pat McAfee:I honestly don't know how What do you mean not ask? We're definitely gonna ask I don't understand how they became such a big thing I know well I think what happens is every time you scrutinize or potentially dive into somebody a little bit harder than maybe somebody you don't go to there is some things that people start like okay so pointing out Evan asked me Evan felt awful he texted me like 20 times last week and he's like I'm so sorry I was like you didn't do anything so he asked me why I like the quarterbacks who haven't versus the quarterbacks who have and I said what do you mean and he said well you like Herbert and love more than Jalen Hurts and I said no no no no I was like I'm a Hurts guy and I went through the chronological thing like I was hesitant on Hurts I was team Carson Wentz and then Hurts won me over I'm like a Hurts guy and I said in relation to Herbert like that's kind of what big time quarterback play looks like and he's also accomplished a lot in the league historically I think there's like six or seven things Justin has done that still hold true to like historical records in the league most passing touchdowns rookie all that stuff when i say like it looks like big tall fast powerful strong smart big time accuracy arm that's all it meant yeah yeah okay we well i'm happy you got to clarify that because honestly we're friends with you we all are friends with you whenever we see you just getting ragdolled through the internet we do feel an obligation to let you kind of say your point let's go to justin herbert though okay because you've been big fan of justin herbert you're not the only one darius butler actually back at the thunderdome yep he picked up the chargers as one of his team whenever he saw Justin Herbert.
1:06:46Pat McAfee:So I don't think you're the only one that kind of got lost in the sauce of Justin Herbert being a guy. But at this point, are we saying he's not? No, no, no. So yesterday is not a Herbert thing. Yesterday's not. Here we go. Don't do this. This is what they're talking about, Ditto. Okay, okay. Yesterday, first of all, there is six or seven legit just jaw-dropping drops on that tape. Okay. There's a drop that becomes an interception. Their interior offensive line is absolutely atrocious right now. And so there are throws that if the ball is caught, there's one less interception. There's probably another 120 to 150 yards on that tape.
1:07:33I'm not just saying this right now. Watch. Guarantee comes out when people eventually watch this tape. People go, wow, Herbert's really getting let down. At least yesterday was getting let down by his teammates. So that's like the big takeaway from that game. I think the overall team thing is they look, and this is, I'm saying this to be not an a-hole. They look remarkably unprepared, the Chargers. They look so outcoached on both sides of the football. And defensively, like this ball from Kirk, it's essentially a two-man route. And D, but you would know better than me, but the backside safety has no vision of what might be coming from the field.
1:08:14And so there's a lot of really bad, just fundamental execution football on their tape. And offensively and defensively, I think it's clearly the most disappointing team in the NFL.
1:08:27Pat McAfee:D-Bud, why don't you talk a little bit about that? They lose Minter, obviously. Got a brand new offense coordinator as well. Could be an excuse. Your thoughts on what you've seen out of your old team, the Chargers, D-Bud?
1:08:36Adam Schefter:Yeah, I said it earlier in the show. Like, I'm shocked at how they came. We talked to Coach Harbaugh, and we joked about, you know, the Dabra being down, you know, when the center got hurt and everything. But it looks like that. You turn on tape, they don't look – almost they don't look motivated. They don't look tough, and they don't look prepared, which are surprising things coming from a Jim Harbaugh coach team. And, you know, Dan, he says it's less on Herbert. I'm going to put a lot of it on Herbert, and I was a fan of Herbert. I still am a fan of Herbert, and for all the reasons, I guess, that Dan said, you know, the arm talent, the physicality, all the things that he brought to the tape, to the team.
1:09:09Adam Schefter:But then once it comes to elevate your game and taking your team over the hump and showing up in the biggest moments, that's kind of where I knock him down as opposed to where I pick up a guy like a Jalen Hurts. But I'm shocked at how this team has come out of the gate. That touchdown at Trey Tucker, just, I mean, it looked like a high school cover too, just safeties dropping with oblivious to where the threats are on the field. Tucker's clear that they're – And no one near the corner. Yeah, it's unbelievable what the charges have been coming out of the gate offensively and defensively. Yeah, and just for like the context of Herbert has accomplished a lot of things in his career, rookie season, most passing touchdowns, most total touchdowns by a rookie, most completions by a rookie, most 300-yard passing games by a rookie, most completions in his first two seasons as an NFL player, most passing yards in his first two seasons, most touchdown passes in his first two seasons.
1:10:01So we've watched him play really big-time football. I have just on the notes yesterday, six drops, legit drops. One of them becomes an interception. I have seven clips where no one's even remotely close to being open. I have five different plays when I write WTF are you doing up front, meaning the blocking concept is a total disaster, both run and pass. So my note is it's a comedy of errors by everyone but Justin Herbert right now.
1:10:35Pat McAfee:Okay, so I like that. People are going to love that you're going to bat for Herbert. Herbert certainly will appreciate that, especially with what's been said. Let's go to something else you could probably take a victory lap on because we kind of called you out for not having enough respect for the 59 points that the Chicago Bears put up.
1:10:50Adam Schefter:Yeah.
1:10:50Pat McAfee:Downpour, obviously, terrible weather. Caleb Williams has a hamstring injury, doesn't finish the game. Baygent comes in. They only score three points. I think it's the fourth biggest drop-off from one week to the next. 56-point difference for the offense. Ben Johnson obviously had high hopes and high expectation for this offense. They can only put up three against Coach Flores' defense. What did you see from them? And are you taking a victory lap right now after saying that the Bears in the first week had a bunch of blown coverages on the defensive side? No, but I did text Dee Butt yesterday. I said, you guys done having a love fest about Chicago's offense?
1:11:24And he said, it's a monsoon. Exactly, D-Butt. Good call, D-Butt. Okay, so one, Ben Johnson and Brian Flores. Ben Johnson in Chicago, Brian Flores has his number. He just does. Is it Flores or Flores? I think it's Flores. It was Flores while he was in New England.
1:11:44Adam Schefter:I know that. I've always said Flores.
1:11:46Pat McAfee:It's F-L-O-R-E-S, Flores. Yeah, but Mike Tomlin, who's saying a lot of good stuff on television, who had him on his coaching staff, said Coach Flores like four times. I feel like our one GM friend used to say that as well. Yeah, he was a big Flores guy. Yeah, so whatever the name, he's unbelievable. Flores, yes, he is back, back. But nonetheless, can we go back to the Chicago Bears offense? Sorry. Yeah, I think the thing that stood out in the game was Brian Flores just got a ton of one-on-ones up front. We talked a little bit last week. Chicago's double-team run game, that's the difference. You make them block one-on-one, I think it's a challenge because your front's got to handle it.
1:12:22But that's the first time under Ben Johnson that I feel like the front, at least up front offensively, really got handled. Minnesota's defensive front completely handled them. Now, listen, there were fumbles. There were drops. So the weather absolutely played its part. But Flores has got the number between those guys, at least in the Chicago-Minnesota matchup. So it's just the way that they played their structure front-wise really confused the run game of Chicago, and they made them one-dimensional.
1:12:51Pat McAfee:Yeah, it was a downpour. Maybe we don't judge it automatically. But if they're going to be a historically great offense, they're going to have to get going. And Ben Johnson has come out and said he will miss some time with that hamstring injury. We hope he is okay sooner than later. Let's go to A.J. Hawk has a question about last night's Sunday Night Football. Dano, yeah, we saw Travis Kelsey last night. He still has it. We know that he looks as good as he ever has. But can you explain a little bit how difficult it is, what he is able to do, how he works off of the defender's leverage, how he and Patrick Mahomes are on the same page?
1:13:19because I think people take it for granted. They think, oh, what do you mean, just run to the open space? But no, it is very, very difficult to do in real time. Can you tell us, is anyone else in the league have any quarterback, tight end, or receiver combination have as much freedom as these guys have? Not as much freedom right now, and nor should they. You know, when I watch Kelsey play right now, I feel like I'm watching Kyle Shanahan call offensive plays. I think one of the things about Kyle is so great is he understands rules of a defense and where they can and cannot be. And I feel Travis has got that same understanding.
1:13:52Like he just knows, okay, defensive structure is this. That means you guys can't be there. My route might say 10 yards, but why wouldn't I break it to seven yards? And there's so many plays where he just kind of just goes to space. Remember like the run and shoot offenses in college football years ago where it was just about green grass. I remember hearing quarterbacks and play callers talk about, we don't really have a route. We just have green grass, and we find different ways to go find that green grass. That's kind of where Travis is right now. It's impressive to watch Patrick indifferent of Travis right now.
1:14:26I think Patrick's throwing the ball best he has in two years. The explosive plays are back. How much they're moving him is back. Kenneth Walker has completely changed this offense, completely changed it. And Patrick's never had this. He has never had this version of get underneath the center, run the football, all created chunk plays down the field, and that explosive element pass game-wise is back. And so having Kelsey had that same understanding, I think he's always had it, obviously, but they just haven't had the opportunity to utilize it because it's just been short passing game. Now they're creating more space because of the run.
1:15:00Pat McAfee:Okay, let's go to the other side of the field last night, the Indianapolis Colts. What did you see from them that tells you they won't be a part of the 84 % of teams that start 0-2 and don't make the playoffs? No, they're not making it. Oh, no. Oh, what? Pierce is hurt. He was the guy. Josh Downs was tremendous last night. They ran the football relatively well. Daniel played really good. Go on. The defense right now is a weakness. I don't understand defensively necessarily what they're trying to do all the time. It feels like D-Butt would know and A.J. would know a little bit better. It's like, hey, I like this defensive call.
1:15:34Let's just call it. This looks like a cool pressure. Let's call that. And it's very abnormal for Lou Anarumo to kind of have that. There's always been a rhyme or reason to what they do defensively. And right now there's just a little bit of like a roll the dice and let's see if it sticks type of thing. And so, candidly, it's the opposite of what's happening in Cincinnati defensively right now. And so, you love the way that you ran it. You love the way that Josh Downs played. But I don't think that right now there's enough defensively to keep them really afloat without Alec Pierce and his ability down the field.
1:16:06Pat McAfee:Yeah, we give up Michael Pittman to the Pittsburgh Steelers. We pay Alec Pierce. We find out that he had to have surgery on his heel, which we thought was an ankle. Then we saw him walking. It wasn't fantastic. They are hoping him for week one. He was there, but limited. Week two, he ends up leaving the game on crutches, but they said they missed, avoided something serious. So when will he be back? We shall see. Jonathan Taylor still got it. I mean, Jonathan Taylor's going crazy. I think that was the best our offensive line has done in a few games, obviously. And Tyler Warren found himself wide ass open.
1:16:33Pat McAfee:Shane Steichen might have called a good game, but that field goal with Patrick Mahomes on the other side. You know what the end result is? We all know. We were all watching it. We all knew exactly what was going to happen. They had to have known whenever they were sitting there on the sideline as well. Defense probably saying, hold on. So you want us to now, all he's got to do is get into Buckner's range. Buckner can hit from 65. So that's just an interesting decision that hopefully Shane will learn from. But it's freaking hard-ass league, man. It's a hard league, yeah. So you guys say ass is cool, but the F1 is not cool?
1:17:06Pat McAfee:When you say you guys, what do you mean? You, Shane Steichen. Who else? There's some others that say, like, frickin' and stuff. Sure. Kids. Yeah, but shout out to the kids. He said it's a frickin' hard-ass league. You got to find a way to win. Yeah. Yeah, we're 0-2. It's not fantastic. But I saw things that make me happy. Defense, though, to your point. Oh, my God. Historically awful. Over 1 ,000 yards of offense has been running against our defense in two weeks. That's a record. Come on, boom. You know who was in first before that? the Seahawks in 1976 884 yards. I mean, we blew right by that.
1:17:41So they've given up over 1 ,002 games.
1:17:43Pat McAfee:Yeah, over 204 yards than the, yeah, the worst ever.
1:17:47Adam Schefter:So we had a green Go ahead, D-Bot. Dan mentioned like you watch the tape and it's one of those where like, you know, I've talked to some other guys around the league, coaches or players, like hey, what are they doing? Like, what do you think they're trying to run here? What coverage? So it's, I know week one, I think they changed the green dot because of the communication issues from the sideline to the players on the field, which is a part of it. I know Lou was with, what's his name, Wilson, the linebacker, who does a lot of the communicating for his old defense, Cincinnati. But not having those communicators on the field who can kind of get that message across the board to have everybody on the same page, because guys were just running wide-ass open.
1:18:24Adam Schefter:The structure of the coverage just wasn't there. So I don't know what the breakdown of communication is from the coaches to the players right now. Is it a talent thing? Is it a communication thing? Because to be historically bad on defense, I mean, you can't have that coming out of the game. The offense, I think, is playing good enough to win football games, but you're not going to have a chance if guys can't get lined up and cover guys.
1:18:44Pat McAfee:Lamar Jackson, Patrick Mahomes, week one and week two. Yeah, I get it, but I mean. Sure, yeah. Not being lined up. But, like, it's the AFC, man. Yeah. You got to deal with Joe Burrow. You got to deal with Trevor Lawrence. They called it a wake-up call last week. They were trying to wake up, and then now it's a freaking hard-ass league, man. It's a hard league. It's a freaking hard-ass league. It is a freaking hard-ass league, man. It certainly is. Speaking of being a hard-ass, I love Dak Prescott in a big old cowboy hat. What did you see from him and the Cowboys? Obviously, a big bounce-back win after losing to the Giants in Week 1.
1:19:14Pat McAfee:Cowboys, in the second half of their loss against the Giants, scored on both of their possessions. The Giants just kind of suffocated them like a bowl constrictor throughout the entirety of the second half with two 8-minute-plus long drives. We didn't know what we were going to see from the Cowboys. C.D. Lamb, seemingly back to being C.D. Lamb. Obviously, George Pickens is on a franchise tag price. They're able to run the Rock. And Dak Prescott is spinning it. Your thoughts on the Cowboys and how real they are at this point and what your thoughts and takeaways are from yesterday? Game's way more about Washington for me.
1:19:43I have no idea how Washington got here. It's week two, and the giant question mark of the whole organization now looms for this year and the future. January 26th of 2005, the NFC Championship game. Now Jaden gets hurt again, and you're like, wait, is he going to play again this year? What's his future look like with a double injury on the elbow? Fingers crossed he's going to find a way to get healthy and then sustain healthy. Their defense is so bad. I have no idea how Dan Quinn's the head coach in the defense just has vacancies in coverage all the time that they can't make a play on a ball. Not having Luvu as a pass rusher.
1:20:20No one near Ferguson in the red zone. If anybody has watched the Cowboys play football at all over the past four years, down in the red zone, Ferguson going down the middle of the field. It's what they do almost every red zone trip. And so to not cover that twice, get beat on it twice, it's jarring. Yeah, malpractice. This is two years in a row now.
1:20:39Pat McAfee:I remember Dan Quinn fired the entirety of his coaching staff to start anew this year. Jaden Daniels getting hurt. We obviously hope he's okay. Schefter said in the first hour, might elect to have surgery. Doesn't look like that's the case right now. We will obviously get updates as we go forward on how much time he will miss. Commanders certainly in a different spot than they were just a couple years ago. Now the Dallas Cowboys, you say it's about Washington, it's not about Dallas. Well, how about it's about Dak Prescott at home against a divisional opponent? The Cowboys improved to 23-2 outright.
1:21:08Pat McAfee:Wow. Plus 354 scoring margin in 19-5-1 against the spread in home division games started by Dak Prescott. 23-2 at home against divisional opponents. That's a pretty good little stat to get into the dance. And I guess nobody's going to really care if the Dallas Cowboys don't win a Super Bowl. This year, could it be different, or you can't tell because of Commanders? No, they won't. I don't think Dallas is good enough to win the Super Bowl right now. They're not. Their defense isn't good enough. Now, Dak breaks the all-time Cowboys passing touchdown record. That's a pretty incredible accomplishment, and kudos to Dak on that.
1:21:41The defense has forced two punts. They've played against, for the most part, Marcus Mariota, who is the backup while he's an awesome career backup quarterback in Washington, and Jackson Dart, a second-year quarterback. They've forced two punts. They're giving up more yards per drive than they did last year when everyone's saying it was this historically bad defense. And so I like the pass game for the Dallas offense. The run game still is not there. They're still missing Tyler Smith in that regard. But the defense that was supposed to be this defense that got fixed, and here we go, week two, less missed assignments, but still way less production.
1:22:15Pat McAfee:Okay, let's stay in the NFC, but let's move to the south. Conman has a question for you about Kelly Moe and the Saints. Yeah, Dan, a pretty unbelievable start for Tyler Shuck and Kellen Moore in his second year with this victory over the Ravens. What did you see from this game? Because a lot of people are talking about how Derrick Henry got the ball twice in the fourth quarter while the Ravens are up. Is it more so that, the malpractice from Declan Doyle, not just handing the ball off to Derrick Henry? Or are you more impressed with the Saints and how good it was for that comeback and Tyler Shuck not getting his head ripped off by Roquan Smith on the goal line?
1:22:49Yeah, way more impressed with the Saints. Number one, Tyler Shuck is in just complete control of everything they're trying to do offensively. I thought week one against Detroit, very little plan for pressure. Since then, just a great plan for pressure. So that's the number one thing. Two, him and Olave have a legit connection. I'm not telling everybody it's the connection that we see, Darnold, JSN, we're not, but it's a real connection. And Olave being healthy is a massive difference maker for this football team. I'd say the other thing, and you'll speak to it better than me in regards to this.
1:23:23So kudos to Shuck, absolutely. The special teams difference in this game was massive. If you go right before half, there's a kick return, and it's really cool. I think it's an intentional kick return where they kick the ball. Baltimore kicks it to their left. The return's right. Returner gets it, and on the whole left side, they start to, like, fall in on purpose, and they pin those Baltimore Ravens guys, and then there's a double team on the complete outside. Yeah, watch the left side of the screen. There's an intentional double team that's going to pop up like right there. And so you see that double team?
1:24:01Like that's intentional, right? So that gets the return, and then they get into field goal range. Another throw, Marlon Humphrey jumps a short in where he shouldn't. This is a really cool like return thing. So they get points right before the half here, and then I think they blocked a field goal as well. It was a miss.
1:24:18Pat McAfee:We don't know if it was a block or not. It was an ugly ball. So, like, special teams were absolutely enormous in this game for New Orleans. Yeah, and I like that New Orleans have full faith in Shuck, and they drafted him in the third round with the idea that he was going to be their starting quarterback, which is – I think he was a second-rounder, wasn't he? I think it was third. Was he a third-rounder? Okay. I think it was third. I think their first pick was in the third round. Okay. Because I think he was their first – he was second round? Yeah, pick 40. Okay, so he was pick 40. He was their first pick, though, and they were treating him like he was going to be the starter literally upon drafting him.
1:24:45Pat McAfee:That was how he was being talked about. He wasn't a first-rounder, which is crazy to me. Then he was called, what, a poor man's Josh Allen? Yep, by D.C. He's what he was called last week by D.C. for Baltimore, and he said that riled him up. Well, here's an interesting stat about him and Josh Allen, says Hembo. Tyler Shuck now has 10 passing and rushing touchdowns in the fourth quarter overtime since week 10 of last season. Second most in the NFL behind who? Josh Allen. So whenever you see Tyler Shuck and you say, hey, poor man's Josh Allen, I think what he meant was, hey, this guy's got a lot of Josh Allen and I'm just in his second year in the NFL.
1:25:16Pat McAfee:and Kellen Morrow seems like the perfect guy for him. Yeah, he's playing at a high level. I know Louis Riddick loved him coming out of school and took over last year. He started to play good football at the end of last year, and they've got some good players on the perimeter skill-wise. I mentioned Olave. Johnson's awesome. And Vele, the acquisition of Dijon Vele, I think, the young man they traded for from, I believe, Denver, is just a good, like, long-field type of receiver. in space. And so, pass game-wise is really interesting. I thought another thing that happened in this game, because you guys mentioned the Derrick Henry lack of runs.
1:25:54I think one of the things that starts to show in this game that is going to be a theme for the Ravens to deal with, and all these teams it's a little nerdy football-wise to deal with, is we've raved about putting quarterback back under center, putting quarterback back under center. All the teams are doing it. One of the counters that I saw New Orleans do defensively was quarterback goes under center blitz the inside linebackers um you know uh luther ellis yeah long time like lions great offensive lineman he's got like seven kids who play in the nfl they've got another one in new orleans linebacker another ellis linebacker in new orleans and he was him and uh pete werner were just blitzing machines up the a gaps and i think just that threw baltimore off and i think that's going to be a thing that baltimore is going to deal with i I think every team in the NFL that's living in this quarterback under center world, you've got to be aware and ready for the counter of defenses to those inside linebacker blitzes.
1:26:50A.J. would know far better.
1:26:50Pat McAfee:Or is that double barrels? Is that what you guys are calling it, A.J.? Double barrel look up the gut? Yeah, Dano, you would know. I know at least talking to centers and guards, they hated when you would show double A gap pressure because they don't know if you're blitzing or you're coming out or you're reading the center. There's a lot of different things you can do from there. Yeah, and for us offensively, if we were under center and you walked up in it, A.J., like you lined up and this is the center and we're right there, we would automatically be like, okay, we have to get in the gun because we can't block everybody that quickly.
1:27:18But I think the other ones too, AJ, are like the ones when you guys time it. We're underneath the center and all of a sudden it's like you time the snap and you shoot and then our running back in play action has to block you. Can't get there exactly. And I think that just threw Baltimore for a loop.
1:27:35Pat McAfee:AJ, how was your timing? Just looking at you, I'd say you got pretty good rhythm. Hopefully it's good. You know when it's good is hopefully the play caller gets the play in late to the quarterback, and all of a sudden I'm sitting there and I'm timing up the play clock. Like D-Butt knows that. We're timing the play clock, too, and you have to snap it. So if you're going low on it, yeah, especially double A gap, yeah, see you later.
1:27:54Adam Schefter:You get assed out with that number three, whether that's a running back or a tight end. That's what can expose your neck. Maybe getting out on the screen or just a quick little glance route, that's what can expose that kind of double A gap. But you're going to have to adjust. But, Dan, that kind of leads me, I guess, to this question. Obviously, Declan Doyle is going to be one of these guys. Who's been your favorite new play caller this year? You got a lot of play callers on teams that we expect to compete. Seattle, Baltimore, Philly, even in Denver. Who's your favorite so far through two weeks?
1:28:23Adam Schefter:Ooh. Seattle, Philly. He's reading his notes. He's got his notes. A couple of notes. Oh, yesterday. The Panthers, Brad Idzik, Carolina. I would say that. It's a good one. I think that was Tone who said that. I was super like, why is Canales giving up play calling? Right now, Bryce Young is balling. I mean, he is playing at such a ridiculously high level. He looks like the guy that was the number one pick. I think that everyone thinks Tett McMillan's their number one, and probably there's conversation. Coker is, to me, their number one receiver. I think Jalen Coker is an absolute stud. He's got a little Steve Smith to his game where it's like, This stocky, tough, just but tall.
1:29:08He's 6 '2", 6 '3". And the way that they are utilizing their vertical pass games. Avery Leggett made some throws. So, Brad Idzik, for sure. And they're not running the ball exceptionally well right now. Waller made plays for them. So, Bryce Young because of the way their offense is performing.
1:29:25Pat McAfee:Yeah, Darren Waller, by the way. What a fantastic pickup this offseason. And I think everybody kind of forgets who he is because everything that's kind of happened through his life and his career, if they're going to get the most out of Darren Waller, that's an added weapon that is obviously absurd. Let's go to a quarterback that is absolutely dialed in right now, maybe playing perfect football for the best team in all the ball right now. Tone has a question for you, Dan O. Yeah, Dan, Pat's talking about Brock Purdy. I believe he was 20 of 22 yesterday for 287. Yes, it was against the Miami Dolphins secondary, which, you know, is not great, but he also looked good against the Rams down under.
1:30:00How do you feel about the 49ers and their veteran weapons to go along with Brock Purdy? Yeah, I didn't watch this game yet. Jesus, dude. Is it because of the Fins? Because of the Fins again. Hurry up! I haven't watched that. He was good, Dan. I watched Seattle, and I didn't watch New England. Pittsburgh. You shouldn't. Don't watch that one. You can skip that one. Don't watch that one.
1:30:23Pat McAfee:Yeah, the Pittsburgh Steelers offense. It's 20 at 22? Yeah. 287. Jeez. He won 10-10 thrown to the sticks in week two. most completions without an incompletion on such though since Josh Allen in 2021. Again, in the playoffs versus the Patriots. So, Brock Purdy was cerebral. The Niners beat the hell out of the Rams, obviously down under. They come back from the 16 and a half, 17 hour flight. Fresh juice pound the Dolphins. I like that your kind of strategy for this season is, I'll watch the games that matter. If they're playing the Dolphins, I just can't. No, it's just I'll get it watched by tonight or tomorrow morning.
1:30:56Is Brock Purdy going to make a run for the MVP? this year? Yes. We think he is. Dan wagon alert.
1:31:02Pat McAfee:Dan wagon alert. There's the Dan wagon right there. We just heard it. We got the script maybe being read right now behind us. Sounds like there's a lot of second and 20s they're working on right now here. Sounds like a don't. Don't love that. First down. We got a little flag football going on. 15-yard penalty. Don't these kids have school? Third down. No, it's a holiday. I think today's Yom Kippur. That's right. Which we did get a message from Schefter. He said in the first hour. Lack of energy might be that it's the holiest day of the Jewish year, Yom Kippur. No eating or drinking, so struggling some.
1:31:38No eating or drinking, I think, since last night. I want to say, maybe. The sun goes down, right? I don't want to be a bad person.
1:31:46Pat McAfee:Do we say happy Yom Kippur? I don't know. Do we say congrats, Yom Kippur? Great question. I think happy Yom Kippur. Happy Yom Kippur. Way to go out there, Schefter. Thank you for reporting in the middle of the fast. Way to battle. Middle of the fast. I absolutely love that. Ty has a question for you, Dano. Dano, are the Bucs in trouble big time? It seems like we kind of get the same response after they lose. Baker started last year unbelievable and then, you know, kind of started turning over the ball a little bit. He's doing more of the same this year. And, you know, the way we were talking about the Browns after week one, you kind of just can't lose to them.
1:32:22Doesn't really matter the situation. Just cannot get beat by the Browns, even though they might have the best head coach in the NFL in Todd Monkenn. But how big, like, what's the panic meter on the Bucs right now? Incredibly high. I'm going to read you my defensive notes from the Bucs tape just quickly. Bad zone defense, bad zone defense, bad pressure distribution, too soft in coverage, poor tackling, poor tackling, poor tackling, poor tackling, blown coverage. So, defensively, the just breakdowns in the second half specifically were just so significant. Boston was great for Cleveland. He's a big-time pickup.
1:33:03This is another blown coverage on third and short in the second half, under four minutes of the game. I think offensively, what you're concerned about is right now it's, first of all, they called like seven screens yesterday. None of them worked. Second of all, it's either a 40-yard completion down the field or a 40-yard miss downfield, I feel, their pass game. It's so high risk, high reward. It's like shots and Baker hits one or two and then overthrows one or two or there's a disconnect on where the landmark is on the throw. And so to lose that game at home with a 16-6 lead, and they have those back-to-back plays.
1:33:44On third down, they're in empty. They'll play before. Cleveland's got six guys up there. They don't adjust the protection. So look, Baker's right now in panic mode because that right tackle has to block two. Egbuka's wide open in the middle of the field for a touchdown. Baker takes off, doesn't see him. And then on fourth down, at the top, that's the third down. So the fourth down, look at the top of the release because Egbuka's the outside post and the inside guy kind of runs up the back side of him. And what happens is the guy that's covering that inside player, I think it's Tez Johnson, almost runs into Emeka, and Emeka is just thrown off just slightly at the top of his route because if he's not, the ball I think is going to be the proper type of ball, and that's going to be a touchdown.
1:34:34But because of the distribution, Emeka comes at the top of his route, and it slows down. He almost has to wait for the guy to clear behind him. before instead of running into him.
1:34:44Pat McAfee:And what you have is a seven-hour L at home to the Cleveland Browns, who people are saying he's absolute shite. And that leads to the last question from A.J. Hawk from the great state of Ohio. Dano, is Deshaun Watson good again, and is there hope in Cleveland for this team? No, I think Deshaun made some good throws there. I said I don't want to take that away from him, but I can't sit there and tell you all the bad stuff that Tampa Bay did defensively and not kind of make that an emphasis as well. But there were some throws that were better. Boston made some big-time plays, and Fannin was great as well.
1:35:19So throwing the ball-wise was probably one of the better just throwing it yesterday that we had seen in maybe a year or two. But I think it's just so much more about how bad Tampa Bay was defensively when it comes to just tackling.
1:35:34Pat McAfee:I don't love that for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. we could go back to our initial read of the Bucs, which was a lot of bad vibes. Remember we had a lot of good vibes for the Saints. A lot of bad vibes for the Bucs. Obviously, Vita Vea's situation, Baker Mayfield's situation, they're not happy, they're not happy. And then for the Saints, all offseason was like, we're happy, we're happy, we're happy. Kamara's saying, I want to stay here, I want to figure out how to stay here. So the vibes thing, I think it really does matter going into a season. Still a lot to play, still a lot to be sorted out. Those 0-2 and 2-0 stats, though, seem to be very real, Dano.
1:36:08Pat McAfee:Oh, yeah. And do we know who's going to be good at the end right now already? Oh, yeah, absolutely. We know who's good. We know who's like a legit team and who's not. Who's not good? Do you think? Is anyone 2-0 that's not good, Dano? All right, let me start. Okay, so teams that I think – so, like, listen, Philly's got the worst offensive line Philly's had in years, but I think you're so encouraged by Jalen Hurts in the past game. Tennessee is 0-2. Atlanta's 0-2. I think Carolina's legit, but they have to get better running the football. defensively was cleaner yesterday. Cincinnati, Cincinnati's legit, legit.
1:36:40That defensive line, and D-Butt would know better than me, but the cool coverages they're doing are awesome.
1:36:45Pat McAfee:Oh, they're having fun on the back end down there? Yeah, I like that. Why is Lou Anarumo doing any of that? Go ahead. Houston's a legit 0-2 now. Like, that's not a fluke. They've got some problems on both sides of the football. They're asking Stroud way too much. Green Bay. They stink. Here's the thing, though, with me, Ty and Green Bay. I actually think you walk away going, our defense is actually playing pretty good football. Yes, I agree. You know, even through two weeks, you have decimated on the offensive line. Jordan Love is playing great football. If not for Jordan, this would be a complete burndown right now.
1:37:20But they got to get healthy. Minnesota 2-0. I have no idea what they're going to do a quarterback. The Raiders are – I think the Raiders are good. I don't think the Raiders are a playoff team. I think that they've taken advantage of the Chargers being a disaster and the Dolphins being not good.
1:37:37Pat McAfee:80 % or 75 % chance. He doesn't know. Hey, Gumpy, tell him, please. I don't know about playoff percentages to an old team. It sounds like you don't know percentages. 60%. Come on, make up. I'm not there. I'm not there. I'm not putting the Raiders over the Patriots, the Bills, the Jags, the Broncos, the Chiefs, the Ravens. Can we talk about the Broncos? Fingles, yeah. Huge win against the Jags. Now, Trevor Lawrence has a Trevor Lawrence moment of the old days. Bo Nix had a Bo Nix moment of the old days in there. The Denver Broncos get a huge win. Was this collapsed by Jacksonville? Huge win by Denver.
1:38:13Pat McAfee:How do you view this game? Obviously, Denver needed to come out and have a much better performance than they had on Monday night defensive-wise. I think they did that. Showcase who they are, maybe, a little bit. What did you learn about the Broncos and the Jags? Yeah, this is more about the Broncos kind of looking like we thought the Broncos would look. Davis Webb in the second half does one thing that he hadn't done in the first six quarters. Bo Nix is an athlete. Bo Nix is not this surgical, let me sit in the pocket and just think through this. Like you got to activate the instinctual athlete in him early on and so that moving him in every facet, whether design run, bootlegs, just changing the launch point, completely changes the way he plays quarterback.
1:38:56Instead of just sitting him in the pocket. That's not his style. And so I think Davis Webb kind of getting on board with that was a big deal. They threw the ball downfield a bunch. That's how they got the ball to waddle a ton down the field. So second half was a much different offensive performance from their past game. And they just got to realize like Bo Nix, you got to let the athleticism in his game be much more prominent than standing there in a statue way. Defense looked like their defense. The third down defense in the second half was absolutely gross in the way that they kind of threw coverages in different fronts at Jacksonville.
1:39:30Jacksonville needs more out of that guy, though. Brian Thomas Jr., they've got to get more out of him. They've got to get more out of him.
1:39:35Pat McAfee:Okay, so not Trevor Lawrence's fault. We're talking about other folks. That's a cool pressure, though. That pressure's cool right there that they threw. Oh, it's cool pressure. You can't throw that ball. What's cool about it? In between the numbers. So they presented man. Everything to the quarterback said man. motion, alignment, leverage, everything says man. And then at the snap, the front changes in the coverage. I always say, like, it's a clock. You know this, AJ. Like, it completely rotates. And Trevor thinks he's ripping a hole shot. And Riley Moss actually does a nice job of, like, playing cover two, trail hip.
1:40:10I don't think – I mean, I don't know if he's supposed to do that, but he trails like it's two man, but it's not. It's just cover two. You like Riley Moss? No, I'm not going to do it
1:40:22Pat McAfee:That means a great quarter
1:40:23Adam Schefter:I was going to say hard not to It's twitchy, it's fast, that's what it's supposed to look like out there Thanks, T-Bot
1:40:30Pat McAfee:Dano, we appreciate you, man Did we miss anything in your notes? Denver, Jacksonville, Chargers Hey, you know you said a yesterday today A couple times
1:40:39Adam Schefter:Going half and half today Like Tyrese Howard
1:40:42Pat McAfee:He dropped hard R on yesterday, earlier No, that's everything I think that's everything. You're the best. Have a great NFL Live. We'll see you later tonight. Thanks, bud. Enjoy. What do you think happens here? I can't imagine the Rams starting 0-2. And Aaron Donald coming back. I think that the Rams, we just believe that travel was a much bigger impact on the team than we kind of gave them credit for. Yeah, I think they also, than they gave them credit for as well. And I think Sean McVay would probably say that at some point. I don't know if he has. Because even he looked tired. And that guy never looks tired.
1:41:15Yeah.
1:41:16Pat McAfee:Okay, so you like the Rams tonight? I like the Rams tonight, yeah. All right. Ladies and gentlemen, Dan Olaus. Dan Olaus. By six and a half, does he like them? How much do you like them by, Connor said, by six and a half? Oh, the Rams? Do I like them winning by a touchdown? That's a lot. Puka play? Puka play? No. Trending towards no. Doesn't look like it. No, then I would say Giants. Then I would say Giants covering. Right? they would lose by less than a touchdown? Yes. Yeah, I'd say that. But I still think the Rams found a way to win the game. All right. Appreciate you. You find every way to win every segment you're a part of.
1:41:55Pat McAfee:You're undefeated, Dano. Except for that one time and that other time. And that other time. But very high percentage. It's like my playing days in the NFL. No, your percentage then was way lower. Yeah, they said you're right, Dan. That's what they said. You're the man. Ladies and gentlemen, it's Dan Roloski. Dano! Okay, some storylines we did not talk about from the weekend. Obviously, college football had a huge one take place. What a win by Ole Miss over Lane Kiffin coming back to LSU. I was very lucky to be down there. I mean, that place is different. That's the most amount of humans I've seen that prepared for a tailgate.
1:42:30Pat McAfee:You talk about tents literally everywhere. They'd been boozing all day, obviously super excited for everything that could take place. They filled that stadium an hour, hour and a half before the game even got started. Sam Levitt obviously running for his life. But on the other side, Trinidad Chambliss, he might be the best football player in the entire country. He moves to the odds-on favorite to win the Heisman. He was hooping, balling, going crazy. And from our understanding, we got out of there immediately after the game. They certainly celebrated this win in a huge fashion. Pete Golding has been in the middle of the fire literally since he becomes head coach.
1:43:02Pat McAfee:Top ten opponents literally every single week. They get another win. Tone, your thoughts on what happened down there in Oxford? And I'm going to be honest, their game day presentation, we're talking drone shows. We're talking a lot of fire. We're talking wristband light show happening around there for the entirety. DJ was on it as soon as a tackle would happen. We got Mo Bamba playing, just filling the space. It felt like a beautiful, beautiful night of college football. And obviously, football justice could have been served that evening as well, Tone. Yeah, the atmosphere looked incredible. Obviously, you guys were there, but it came across on the TV, and Trinidad is just inevitable.
1:43:43It's not just his legs. It's not just the pocket. It's everything. It seems like he always makes the right decision. Then on the other side, it felt like in the first half, Sam Levitt was a bit rattled. It felt like he wasn't even looking downfield a lot of time. It was a lot of hit your back foot and then take off, and then he kind of settled down and made some throws in the second half, and things got tight. Then Trinidad had one of those Trinidad drives that they'll remember down in Oxford forever. I thought Will Echols, the D-tackle for Ole Miss, played great against that LSU offensive line.
1:44:12He was a huge difference maker. The LSU secondary played a lot better than they did – or sorry, the Ole Miss secondary played a lot better than they did against Louisville. I thought it was a great game plan from Ole Miss and execution and atmosphere and everything. That was really, really well done, and I was really, really happy for Pete Golding down there.
1:44:28Pat McAfee:Yeah, I was very happy for Pete Golding. I was very happy for the people down there who showed up for us at game day. I mean, it was hot, dude. That is a – I've been living in the South for three weeks here. I don't know how they do it. Just sweating for the entirety of my existence down there in those states. Obviously, it's been an SEC start for college game day as we head back to Tennessee, Rocky Top. What a kick. I mean, just absolutely pured this thing. Move these kids to the hash, Pat. Move them to the hash or something. Something's going on, dude. Yeah, I mean, it's a lot of soccer players coming early.
1:45:00Pat McAfee:I think it's a smart decision, but you still have to make it. You know, like Jacob here, he still has to make it in front of all those people for a million bucks. The head case that could potentially come. These guys are seemingly fighting through it. I was so impressed with these two kickers, Connor and then Jacob here. And obviously it's been pretty expensive. I have no idea where we're supposed to go from here. I don't know. To a 50-yard line? Yes. Okay, if you guys have any ideas, I'm open to them, what we're supposed to do. A pass rush? Yeah, a lot of rush. Let the other guy rush. Other guy in front of him with his hands up.
1:45:32Pat McAfee:I'll tell you what. I seen other guy, you know, last night. Make him do it naked. Snack bar? For how much he's been on. Not at snack bar. He was actually in the hotel lobby. He got a chance to go sneak peek a movie. He got invited to do a sneak peek. That's utter guy. Screening. A lot of people did, from our understanding. They all came in at the same time. We did not get the opportunity to go watch. Meet the Fockers? No. You're not going to get it out of us either. Maybe Stanford Steve will have to tell the boys what it was on Friday when he stops by and sees us. But Stanford Steve looks good.
1:46:04Pat McAfee:He's only been home, like, I think one day in the last three weeks. So, everybody pull for your favorite Stanford Steve when you get going. Game day is in Knoxville going back to Rocky Top as Texas heads there. Can't wait to get down there. Obviously, I have very, very high hopes for the atmosphere of game day and the atmosphere of the game, and Rocky Top's a beautiful place. Sure wish we were going to Morgantown, West Virginia. What a win by West Virginia down there in Charlotte. North Carolina, which we certainly all knew that wasn't Charlottesville. It was just in Charlotte. It was a neutral site.
1:46:39Pat McAfee:The West Virginia Mountaineers packed that place out. And we got a quarterback in Michael Hawkins Jr., transfer from Oklahoma, who looks a lot like Pat White. And I'll tell you, the stats are saying he might be the best quarterback in the country right now. I don't know if you've got a chance to watch this entire game, AJ, or UD, but just know that this is pretty reminiscent of what the Mountaineers used to look like, Darius.
1:46:58Adam Schefter:Yeah, I did have this on in the quad box, And it was a couple moments where I was like, oh, shit, that does look like number five in white. But he's electric. And this game was back and forth all the way up until the fourth quarter. Unbelievable finish by these guys. And this is when you always talk about it. We always talk about, you know, the strength coaches and conditioning and these hard-ass coaches. And I felt like that's what we saw was the difference late in this game. Like, I feel like the conditioning was better. And West Virginia just finished and kind of put that foot on their throats.
1:47:25Adam Schefter:Unbelievable matchup. It was a back-and-forth game I thought was a really good game. Obviously, this was on the same time as the LSU Ole Miss games, but a very good football game out there.
1:47:34Pat McAfee:Yeah, I would say West Virginia is all the way back. Oklahoma State going to Morgantown. I think that would have been biblical if we would have taken college game day there. Instead, Tennessee, Texas. We assume West Virginia will continue to have success, and we'll get there down the road. Is this new? This is right now? Congratulations, Michael. Thank you for choosing West Virginia, brother. We are very, very, very lucky that you did that. And speaking of very, very lucky, Jared Curtis, the freshman quarterback for Vandy, he gets a win in his first start from maybe the biggest oh no in the history of football.
1:48:09Pat McAfee:This is D1 football. NC State representing the ACC. Up three. Slow safety. Give up two. Bumble! Anything but take contact. Anything but lose the ball. Instead, Vandy gets the dub. And NC State is going to have to live with this. on the record forever as maybe being one of the biggest oh no's in the history of ball. I've been a part of some dumb plays. Please, let's not act like it doesn't happen. Everybody remembers what we did against the New England Patriots where we run that fake punt thing, and obviously that takes place. A slow safety at the end of the game to win, to get a huge dub over Vandy for NC State, especially with what happened to them against Virginia in their opener, to trick it off like this in the end zone in a fashion that I don't know if I've ever seen at a D1 level, especially in that situation, tough stuff.
1:49:05Pat McAfee:But what a win for Vandy, AJ. What a win for Vandy. I guess why didn't he get out the back of the end zone? Why don't he do anything but this, right? Just throw it deep. Throw it up in the air. I guess there's all kind of options. We used to practice this on Friday afternoons, at least in the NFL. Quarterback, you know, by time, by time, steps out of the back of the end zone before he gets touched. Like, you never want to be touched, obviously. Yeah, so this happens a lot with the punter. Everybody remembers Sam Cook in the Super Bowl whenever the Ravens were taking on the Niners, I do believe, is how the game ended.
1:49:33Pat McAfee:We would work this every single week, slow safety, fast safety. Fast safety, snapper just snaps it directly out of bounds. I don't touch it. Let's just give him a safety. Let's go punt this thing from the 20-yard line and kind of move on with our day. Slow safeties, you're trying to drain that thing. Let's get this game over with. No contact. And remember, if he was to throw this, the clock doesn't stop until the ball hits something. So we've even worked with the Indianapolis Colts slow safety from like the 25-yard line where I take a snap and I jog backwards and I turn around and I throw that thing as high and as far as I possibly can into the stadium because it doesn't stop until it hits something.
1:50:10Pat McAfee:You could take 10, 13, 14 seconds off if you're able to move and do everything. This was just a failure on all accounts. And I don't want to just blame the quarterback, but it's hard not to at this age of football and at this stage of football, but what a nightmare-ending debutt for the NC State Wolfpack, who are howling with tears instead of howling in celebration.
1:50:34Adam Schefter:Absolutely. Oh, no, I think I saw a graphic of whatever record it was with the team having to lead with 10 seconds left, and it was like 1 ,000-something in one. It's something you never see happen, not only on a D1 collegiate level, but like a high school level. And it kind of started on the defensive side. I'm always looking at the defensive guys on the left. It almost came very, very close to being an offside. But he did a great job of kind of setting that edge and forcing the quarterback to kind of stop and pull up. And obviously the quarterback not protecting the ball. See, he wanted to continue going to the right, had to pull up right here and just run into the gauntlet.
1:51:06Adam Schefter:But you got to put two hands on that ball, cover it up, go down to the ground, throw it out of the back of the end zone, run out of the back of the end zone. Obviously so many options here. But, man, this is a terrible, terrible way to lose. Nobody on either side of those sidelines will ever forget the end of this game.
1:51:21Pat McAfee:Yeah, and if you're Vandy, go ahead and celebrate that thing. Yeah. A win is a win. Let's move along. Anything else we missed from the college road, Boston Connor? I mean, the biggest upset I thought of the weekend was Kentucky going into Texas A &M, kind of blowing College Station completely up. And Bill Stein, he had a pretty unbelievable postgame presser as well. That was fantastic. SEC showed up big time because the Big Ten didn't really have much to go off of this weekend. Oregon scored 84. That was cool. Dylan Raiola's wearing number eight somehow.
1:51:58Adam Schefter:Some good games in ACC, too. Louisville, big win. Louisville, big, big, big win over SMU. And then obviously Clemson getting a win over UNC. And we had that salty, salty Bill Belichick. Weather update. Post-game, so I love that.
1:52:14Pat McAfee:Yeah, and then the delay in the Florida State, Alabama, it felt like we had weather across the board as we get into this season and people are going to have to deal with that. Teams are going to have to deal with that. The Browns dealing with that better than the Bucs seemingly. Wild. Shocking. Pat, did you listen to the report? It was on Red Zone. They were coming out of the weather delay. And the sideline reporter, forgive me, I can't remember who it was, she was saying that the Bucs were incredibly quiet the entire weather delay, but the Browns, they were bumping music the entire weather delay.
1:52:43I was like, oh, I almost went and immediately live bet the Browns. Now I can't do that physically. My fingers won't let it happen. But that was interesting to see that the vibes were much higher on the Browns side during the weather delay than the Bucs.
1:52:56Pat McAfee:Tone, what do we have tonight with our friends over at DraftKings? Remember, DraftKings available in all 50 states. If you're of age and agree to gamble responsibly, we'd love for you to come join us. Tonight, we'll be boosting what, Tone Diggs? We are boosting Cam Scadaboo. Anytime touchdown score boosted to plus 150. The man has a nose for the goal line. So I hope we get back on the winning track with this one tonight, Pat. Yeah, we need one. We've been losing a couple. My Saturday game day picks, if SMU would have been able to keep that within three and a half against Louisville, obviously we hit there.
1:53:28That would have been sweet.
1:53:30Pat McAfee:Last week, Kenneth Walker scores early. J.K. Dobbins doesn't get the rock tonight. Cam Scadaboo's going to get the ball. Cam Scadaboo's touching paint. Gamble responsibly with us saying that. but certainly come join us. We'd love to have you. DraftKings, the best sports book on earth. AJ, as we continue digitally here, what do we need to hit in the next hour that we haven't chatted about just yet? I want you to get out there and watch Puka warm up pregame whenever this happens because it sounds like he's a game time decision from everything Shefty and all the others are saying. I don't know if Puka's playing against these kids playing flag football out here, but I will certainly have my eyes on the field as I'm boots on the ground here at SoFi.
1:54:05Pat McAfee:Monday night football, Giants, Rams, Monday night countdown, 6 p.m. Eastern. See you then. Oh, I think I got it in. Oh, yeah. Look at this. Will you guys look at this shit, though? I mean, they're doing it. It'd be pretty cool to play seven on seven down there. It's a big stadium. What a shot. Yeah, look at that. Do we think more Rams fans or Giants fans tonight? Ooh. What is it? 50-50? Going Giants. Yeah, I would assume a lot of New York people have a lot of opportunities in Los Angeles. Mm-hmm. Ooh. Did you do that? Whoa. I did not do that. I did not do that. Does this change it at all? Yeah.
1:54:39Pat McAfee:Yep, it did. Okay, see, it was probably white balancing off the beautiful LED board up there. And then it comes back to my sunburnt broil face, you know, from being in the south. Interesting weekend down there in Oxford. The internet was certainly alive, AJ. Yeah, you say. Always. Yeah, I just don't like that that has just become the new thing. Like, yeah, we can just make up what this guy says. and everybody just going to believe it because we've quoted him out of context so many times. People just believe that this is what he is. It's an interesting time for me to be alive. Just know literally all I'm trying to do is celebrate the hell out of football and have a good time out there.
1:55:21Pat McAfee:You know, have a good time out there. There was this one particular lady, Jill from Florida, I think her name was. Is the McAfee run over soon? And I was like, so fascinating because we're literally, what, three years into this on TV? Is that what this is? Three years, four years into this TV thing? I forget if it's three or four. I think four. I want to say four. What's the average age of people? Oh, yeah, it is four. What is the average age of people that are on TV? Like 55, 60, 70 maybe? Some of these people that have been on TV. And it's just been like the same people wearing the same suits with the same A block, B block, C block production.
1:55:58Pat McAfee:Same opinions. Same recycled everything for so long. And then we come in here, you know, as a new generation. We are very, very lucky to be a part of the generation that we're able to create our own sports media. And it feels like every sports media person on the Internet and digital-wise that has had success has done it the complete opposite way of how the Corpo sports world people have been doing it for a long time. So I can completely understand the amount of people that, like, hate my guts and shit, but they just need to know, like, the next group that's coming after us, they're going to be so much better than we are, and they're not going to be doing your corporate boring bullshit about sports.
1:56:37Pat McAfee:That is just not what it's going to be. So for everybody that just hates my guts, I understand. I completely understand. There's a lot of things that I assume you like that I think is absolutely putrid and shouldn't get on television. So I appreciate you misquoting me, putting me out of context, trying to kill me, trying to kill the shows that I'm very lucky and thankful to be a part of. But all we're trying to do is celebrate bulk. And if you could get my words right what I say, that'd be sick. And if you could provide context on the things that I say, that'd be cool too. Because I don't think we're going anywhere, from my understanding.
1:57:08Pat McAfee:I'm 39, a very weathered 39. But I think we're doing A-OK. And literally, celebration of sport and ball is allowed. And if it wasn't for all the shitty shows of the past, we wouldn't be here right now. So you can kind of blame yourselves for all of it. Now, be a friend, tell a friend something nice might change their life. Let's take a break on the other side. Let's cover all the headlines that we haven't hit. Let's talk all the things that ball requires us to talk about as we feed into a Monday night football between the Giants and the Rams. That's going to feed families. And we have overreaction tweets from all around the Internet in the NFL fandoms.
1:57:49Pat McAfee:I can't wait. Boys, how are you feeling back there in the Thunderdome? Phenomenal. Phenomenal. So when a helicopter comes and you're not on American soil, okay? when it's one of those military helicopters that comes. Just as somebody that's been around the military a couple different times and talked to a couple people, when these helicopters come and you're not on American soil, which is what I said, I think you should probably get the fuck out of there. I think that's probably good. Because there's probably SEALs that are about to hop out of that thing. You know, like Osama bin Laden raid, potentially.
1:58:23Pat McAfee:Or when we head to Venezuela. Or when we go to Libya. Or any of these other things that I'm not 100 % like for. us doing all these things, but I certainly understand that when the choppers are flying that low, I don't know if it's necessarily a great thing if you're not on our team. Our team is United States of America, and let's remember we're in this thing together, and I'm very thankful for all of it, but I don't need to be misrepresented by grandstanders who then will tell other people that they're terrible people while putting something out into the world to potentially start a war for somebody.
1:58:55Pat McAfee:That's a complete lie. So I'm a little worked up about it. I'm a little worked up about everything that's been happening out there. But we're just trying to do it right, man. That is literally what we're just trying to do. Just trying to do it all right and celebrate it all. And tonight is no different. Monday Night Countdown show, I think we got some good shit coming. Hell yeah. I think we got some good shit coming. Love that. Yeah, last week was a blast. Last week was also 200 degrees. L.A. here, perfect weather. Nice, nice. I assume very nice. Yeah, well, it's very nice. But you got to remember, they didn't build a dome here.
1:59:27Pat McAfee:Remember they just did the super artsy LED board covering the entire thing? Where it rains inside. It can. Yes, there's a nice breeze coming right now. Okay. Nice breeze. We have been here whenever it rains inside. Oh, yeah. You know, we have certainly been here whenever that happens. But the breeze that's coming through, almost perfect. It feels like this is the most fall football-y feel that I've had all season thus far. And I think it's fitting to be an incredible evening here between Matthew Stafford and Jackson Dart and the boys. Let's take a break. On the other side, we'll cover everything.
1:59:58Pat McAfee:and needs to be chatted about and the overreaction tweets from all around. Ty, how many different teams are represented in the overreaction tweets? And who was the most vocal, would you say, out of them all? Falcons fans are not happy. Browns fans on the other side are ecstatic. Yeah, I tried to go through and grab all the people who basically were down in the dumps last week. There's a couple teams who weren't great and who their fans are really relishing their victory today. So tried to grab a couple of those. It's well represented, let's say that. I can't wait to dive in. Be a friend, tell a friend something nice.
2:00:37Pat McAfee:It might change a life. Take five. Five.
2:00:43Strong communities are built in the places where life happens, where families build their lives, where students build their futures, where businesses create opportunity. Bloom Energy provides reliable power for the places communities depend on every day. From hospitals and college campuses to stores and factories, clean, quiet power that uses little water right where it's needed so communities can keep moving forward. Bloom Energy, power America relies on. Before this, there's this. As you celebrate the game, take a deeper look at its roots. The people grow in the grass, paving the lots, welding the goalposts, inspecting every football.

2:01:46Pat McAfee:Hello beautiful people and welcome back to this magical overreaction Monday September 21st, 2026. Hour 3 of the sports program begins right now. Football! Here's the greatest. I'm live here at SoFi Stadium in beautiful Los Angeles. More specifically I believe Inglewood. I believe we are in Inglewood. A lot of signs over the roads as we drove into this place. Hard to get into this stadium, I must say, earlier today. Multiple credentials needed, multiple different check spots. Everybody's safe. Everybody's ready to go for tonight. Giants versus the Rams. Can't wait to see how this Giants team looks after a pummeling win over the Dallas Cowboys in Week 1.
2:02:29Pat McAfee:And then the Los Angeles Rams, they got absolutely smacked in Australia. Aaron Donald projected, expected to return after a two-year hiatus. What does he do for the team that literally started worse than any odds-on favorite in the history of the NFL? Cannot wait to see how this battles out. Joining me live from the Thunderdome is a great group of dudes. Just an absolutely unbelievable cast. You have A.J. Hawk, Darius J. Butler, the Toxic Table at Boston Conner, and at Ty Schmidt. And in one half of the Hammer, die! Cowboys AP Tone. On this glorious overreaction Monday, we head to the internet.
2:03:07Pat McAfee:Ty, you said there was a lot of representatives. It became the number one trend on X, so we appreciate everybody. All we wanted anybody to do was just kind of let it all out. You're not dramatic. You're not doing anything crazy. You're just speaking from an actual NFL fan's point of view. Best ones make the show. All you have to add to your tweet is... I don't want to overreact. But... But let's start with in-house in the Thunderdome. Tone Diggs tweets, hey, Pat McAfee show. Hashtag, I don't want to overreact. But I'm going to need a day off soon. I'm going to have the funeral to attend. Rodgers is either going to die in the pocket or kill Big Mike from continually throwing him under the bus.
2:03:57Pat McAfee:Obviously, Aaron says he needs to talk to the coaches and the play callers about maybe a little bit better plays down the stretch there. And then the offensive line, he gave up one of the biggest hits he's ever had as a 40-plus-year-old in his entire NFL career. Tone, I don't know if it's a funeral, but it sounds like you're a bit Don and Ott and you're Dauber's Don on the Steelers. Yeah, Dauber is super Don. You know, when you hire a new coach after having a coach for 18-plus seasons and it's an offensive-minded coach for the first time ever, you you expect the offense to get better and it has not uh as of yet two of the worst offensive games of all time in the first two weeks i'm expecting wholesale changes on the offensive line potentially to try to get things right you know there's um there's not a lot of great going on right now dk's dropping balls i will say is pat fryer mooth is playing his ass off okay but other than that not a lot great going on they can't run the ball they can't throw the ball um defense Can they catch it, though?
2:04:54Pat McAfee:Can they catch the ball? No, they can't do that. Outside of Moth. Yeah, outside of Moth. But, no, it's tough times again, so we'll see. The Steelers have scored just one touchdown in 25 total possessions over the first two weeks of the season. Pretty good, right? Same old Steelers football there. Okay, hopefully they're able to turn that around. Thanks a lot, Matt Canada. Do you think he started this whole thing? Yeah, he put some sort of curse in pieces. I mean, that's a Canadian way. No offense to the Canadians. I am just strictly talking shit to Gumpy right over here. Okay, so everybody knows that I am literally just talking shit to him whenever I talk about all of Canada, but I do think it can ring true to the entire country.
2:05:36Pat McAfee:Right, Gumpy? What kind of shirt is that? Yeah, what is that shirt there? What's that tarp, pal? Malachi Tony, Darian Mensa tarp. Oh, keep Mensa home life. Go, brother. Hey, pal, you got any pants out here in L.A., or did you think we were going to the south again? Yeah, I completely forgot. I thought maybe there was some in my bag. There is not. I also don't know where my wallet is. Still? If you're in Kansas City, Oxford, Austin, Baton Rouge, or Los Angeles, and you find a Kyle Cathcart wallet, send it back to Gumpy. Oh, no. Certainly use the card a couple times. Get a couple loonies and toonies out of there.
2:06:15Pat McAfee:But we are certainly looking for it. It has been gone for a while. Let's go to the next overreaction. This is from Noel at Noel Costella. Hashtag I don't want to overreact. But. Darius J. Butler needs to get us a goddamn curse away from the Bears. Pick back up the Chargers, bud. The moment you join the fandom, the QB dies and the offense plays peewee football. You curse the Bears, D. But are you hearing a lot of this out of Chicago? I did not expect it. I'm hearing a little bit of it.
2:06:42Adam Schefter:But shut up. Just shut the hell up. All right. It was a monsoon out there. And, look, I've been rooting for the Eagles, huh? They've been to two Super Bowls in the last four or five years. So, no, I'm not a curse. He was on Madden. So, if you're going to blame anybody, blame the Madden people. But we got some good news. Then Ben Johnson followed up and said Caleb is weak to weak now. I respect the overreaction. It was weak, too. And, yes, everybody was high on Caleb in the offense after scoring 59 points. You go out there and put up three. You lose. You get carted off. You're down and dumped. So, as a fellow Bears fan, I respect your pain.
2:07:15Adam Schefter:But shut up.
2:07:16Pat McAfee:Okay. I like that you're on the Bears train, and hopefully they're able to get better as they go along. And I think maybe people are saying Caleb might have overreacted to what he thought happened. No. He's saying he reacted perfectly, and he started his recovery early, obviously not utilizing his hamstring at all during that cart out. If he didn't get carted out, he'd be walking all these up the tunnel. That only adds more impact to the injury, so he's taking care of himself. And the reason why he had his towel on his head is because his dauber was done. So done. And also, it was raining, so maybe he was trying to, you know, cover his face a little bit.
2:07:51Pat McAfee:That makes sense. Certainly that mustache. Yeah. Certainly that mustache. Hope he gets better. Ben Johnson said he will miss some time. Let's go to the next overreaction. This one's from Gooch Stevens. Okay. Shout out to your name. Hashtag, I don't want to overreact. But. Ty Steichen might be the Antichrist. Colts had a day, but after marching down in OT, Osama been Steichen. decides to go for the tie. Yes, let's give three-time Super Bowl champ, three-time Super Bowl MVP, two-time league MVP, Patrick Mahomes the ball with three whole-ass minutes left. Fire everyone, says Gooch. I think we've hammered this home quite a bit.
2:08:30Pat McAfee:I think Steichen would go back and redo this if he knew what the outcome was going to be. But that's part of the problem is we all knew what the outcome was going to be. As soon as you give Patrick Mahomes that amount of time and all he has to do is get in the field goal range with Harrison Bucker, who has one of the biggest legs in all of ball. I appreciate the confidence in the defense, but I just think we've seen this too many times to not expect this to go exactly how it was. Colts covered. Yeah. Great cover. Which we like. We certainly like that. But now the Colts haven't won since like 2025 or something like that, and Patrick Mahomes is now 8-0 in regular season overtime games, passing Jake the Snake Plummer for the longest win streak by a starting QB at any point in their career since the NFL introduced overtime.
2:09:13Pat McAfee:And D-Bot, Osama Bin Steichen? Seems a bit much.
2:09:17Adam Schefter:I mean, it's over actually Monday, right? I think it's fair. I think it's fair for today. I don't think it's bad at all. I'm surprised he let Ballard escape there. Oh, there were plenty of Osama Bin Ballard. Oh, okay. Okay. Yeah, so, yeah, for today and today only. Terrorist organization. Maybe we drop Osama Bin Ballard and Steichens. But, yeah, I was thoroughly disappointed. Like you said, we all knew exactly what was going to happen. Foregone conclusion. you give not only Patrick Mahomes, but Harrison Bucker. I know a lot of people probably jumped off the Bucker train the last couple years, but that's a multiple-time Super Bowl champ as well.
2:09:51Adam Schefter:He gets in that situation. He's going to make that kick. You're in the Chiefs' kingdom, and you've got an opportunity to get a win from him. You're actually getting calls going your way. You make a big play and get in their area. You've got to capitalize, and we did not. So I think it's all fair on overreaction Monday.
2:10:06Pat McAfee:Yeah, calls going our way. That was definitely a first down. Treadwell was never touched. I don't know what the hell is going on. But there were certainly some other calls that went our way. Tom Pestock, the artist formerly known as Baron Corbin, was bitching all over the internet about it all. And I appreciate what Treadwell did last night, but just like he didn't touch home plate in the softball game, this one, you know, give up a ball late, decide not to give the number 13 to Keenan. Let's go ahead and figure this out, boys. Let's figure this out as fast as possible. There's too many Osama bins being associated with the Indianapolis Colts right now.
2:10:39Yeah, so Balaban as well. The Al-Qaeda Colts, I saw. Oh, jeez. God. Get some, I mean. They're a terrorist organization. What? And there are other terrorist organizations, maybe some other terrorist organizations they can, you know, reference instead of this one? Yeah, they're hitting Cooper Rush with that. I saw his Wikipedia got changed to Cooper, Adolf Hitler, Mussolini, Bin Laden, Rush. They made all those names his middle name. Yeah, it was not cool.
2:11:04Pat McAfee:Yeah, there's been some really good internetting happening, And the one that really clarified for me was Cooper Cush had a nice little life. You know, he had a nice little life. He was coming in to third string quarterback, and now his Wikipedia is calling him Adolf Hitler. That is, hey, that's the game. You live in the paint, you're going to get dunked on every once in a while, especially down there in Atlanta. We appreciate all the boys going out there and laying turds so we can have this particular day on every single Monday. Let's go to GSTruther at God of Gremlin. Hashtag I don't want to overreact.
2:11:37Pat McAfee:but here we go the Atlanta Falcons fans chanting that they want a fourth string d2 undrafted qb to get in the game instead of poop or rush is the biggest indictment of how pathetic this franchise is hashtag sell the team connor a lot of this from the Falcons fans i mean they were batting a thousand on the internet right now yeah a lot of that uh i saw some people saying they have too much talent um for them to lose games like this but i'm not so sure this isn't the best thing that we can have for everybody's entertainment. Absolutely, the Falcons are going to be in prime time these next three weeks in a row, so we would like to see a little bit of improvement, but because they are so bad, it is almost better for the entire planet to experience them on the internet.
2:12:19Jack Strandian deserved this. Let me just say that first and foremost. We saw him in preseason against the Colts. This boy's a star. He's got talent. He will be better. For his first pass to be a pick six, that is just absolutely miserable, and I'm not so sure that's more so the curse that's on the Atlanta Falcons right now, even though I don't know what it's from.
2:12:37Pat McAfee:What happened there at the end? I saw a Carolina Panthers player just come diving in. It looked like he was potentially elbow dropping. Did you see that, AJ? Let me see. So Jack Strand hits the wide receiver right in the chest. Pick, how you doing? Let's finish this out. And then watch 52 here, I think. No. He's just having fun. He's just having fun playing ball. Yep. That's awesome. Just living. Jack Strand doesn't deserve that. No, he doesn't. All right. Carolina Panthers having fun out there. Hey, Carolina Panthers, that's a good football team. Good football team. That's a good football team.
2:13:10Pat McAfee:Okay, let's go to the next overreaction. It's from at SpiderCold. Hashtag, I don't want to overreact. But the Dallas Cowboys once again have a top three offense in the league, but a bottom three defense. Lamar and Henry are rushing for 300 against us next week. D, but I thought we loved the new defensive coordinator. Seems like it's a lot of the same.
2:13:29Adam Schefter:Yeah, I mean, look, a lot of these things look and sound good on paper. Shit, Rams, they're fighting for their first win going into week two. You got to go out there and actually do it. So, yeah, we'll see. They got the pieces on paper. Can they actually go out there and play? Did they look better this week? Yes, they did. But I'm coming off a week where Derrick Henry didn't get enough touches in the second half. You better believe they're going to have it circled. Like, hey, get him 30 touches. So, yeah, he might run for 250. A lot of people are calling Derrick Henry potentially the greatest running back of all time.
2:13:57Adam Schefter:I'm hearing more and more of that. So, yeah, get 22, some touches. But I think the Cowboys will get better as this season goes on.
2:14:05Pat McAfee:We have some breaking news as we interrupt this overreaction Monday. Adam Schefter is tweeting, Vikings head coach Kevin O 'Connell says Kyler has cleared concussion protocol and will start Sunday versus Tampa. Okay. All right, Kyler. Welcome back, Kyler. Welcome back. Schefter told us that Carson Wentz did his job, okay, and when Kyler gets back they want to know what they have. At least they know the Carson Wentz experience, I guess, is always available, who has them sitting at 2-0. Kyler Murray getting back out there. It did not look great to start the season, maybe the last couple weeks, getting to watch Carson kind of operate the offense, learn the offense a little bit more, get healthy.
2:14:41Pat McAfee:Maybe this will be good as they head down into a wounded Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Let's get to the next overreaction. I think that's good. Is that good news, A.J., or bad news for the Vikings? It's got to be good news. I mean, obviously, Carson, as Chef, you said, did what he needed to do, but we've got to see what we have in Kyler. I mean, this is a one-year prove-it deal for him anyway, right? They don't have to pay him anything. He's getting paid from Arizona. Yeah. Do we want to keep him long-term? Man, Kirk – I mean, sorry, not Kirk. But just like Kirk, Carson's winning. You're saying – how do you pull him when he's 2-0?
2:15:11Pat McAfee:What are your ties to Kyler other than, like, he was a fan as a kid and we talked about him being the starter at the beginning of the season? I just don't think I expected Carson to win a couple games and then get pulled for a guy that's never really played for the team before. but I guess they do have very high hopes for Kyler, and Kyler is their quarterback that they want going forward. Just seems like an interesting decision whenever the team wins, but maybe Kyler comes out and lights it up, and I believe we'll be talking to Kevin O 'Connell here in the next day or two, so we'll kind of get more from him on the decision, but it does surprise me a little bit that you take out an undefeated quarterback, especially whenever he's kind of been dropped in in interesting circumstances.
2:15:46Pat McAfee:Backup quarterback gets none of the reps week one, throws three touchdowns, zero interceptions. He's the first guy to do that since Fran Tarkenton, And then yesterday against the Chicago Bears in a monsoon, in an absolute monsoon, they get another win. I don't know. That's an interesting decision to me, AJ, just for me personally. But I trust Kevin O 'Connell more than me. I guess how do you, when Kyler goes in there, let's say he goes three and out the first three series, then what do you do? That's the question, I think.
2:16:10Adam Schefter:You got to play. I mean, he came into camp. He won the starting job. This is kind of old school. You don't lose your job because of injury. So Carson Wentz, you did what you're supposed to do. You know, going in there, getting two wins. And look, it's great to have that insurance policy as a backup quarterback. And now you know you can go to Carson if you need to. Again, rather Kyler's playing terrible or he's injured or something. But, yeah, you've got to get a long, I would think, a long good look at Kyler Murray as your starting quarterback, especially if you're Kevin O 'Connell. Because I think there is some pressure.
2:16:39Adam Schefter:I don't know how it is in that building. But I think there is some pressure on KOC to find not only quarterback for this year but the long-term quarterback. So I think he has more confidence in Kyler going forward than he does with Carson Wentz at this point at least.
2:16:51Pat McAfee:Well, Ian, I guess you're 2-0. So, hey, we're 2-0 right now. So, we already got two wins. If it takes him another game or two to get back into it, at least we have him long-term. We have not seen Kyler at practice. We've only seen what he's been able to do week one before Carson came in. It wasn't great, but he's obviously new to the offense. We'll see how it goes. Let's go to the next overreaction, shall we? It's from TradeStar at Easy Peasy Investing. I'm sure he's got it figured out. Hashtag, I don't want to overreact. But the Chargers organization is a joke. Sell the team. Fire Jim. him, Joe, and the whole front office.
2:17:23Pat McAfee:Offense looked like a JV's first install day. Defense looks like it belongs in the MAC. Oh, wait. That's where our DC is from. Time to tank. Two new coordinators certainly being a problem for them. Tone Diggs, people are not happy with what the Chargers showed out there. And Joe Olt, I think he had a tough outing as well. Nothing really good for Chargers fans, it feels like. Yeah, Joe Olt had a really, really tough day. Obviously, it ended with the safety on Max Crosby to end the day there. So just a tough situation. But, yeah, I believe it's the first time ever where a team was favored by eight or more against two teams that were 200 below winning percentage from the season before and lost.
2:18:02So just a horrendous start for the Chargers. Very, very bad on offense. Very, very bad on defense. Nothing looks great. And you stack the schedule on top of that, so there's nothing really to look forward to. Just an abysmal mess so far for the Chargers this season. It doesn't look like it's going to get any better.
2:18:19Pat McAfee:Okay, so we'll go to a fan base that is down in the dumps, you know, and certainly doesn't have a lot of light at the end of the tunnel over the next seven weeks or so. Let's go to a fan base that is riding high. Here we go. This is Sports Fan 2024 at JustinM7673009. He certainly picked that handle. Hashtag I don't want to overreact. But as a Panther fan and a huge fan of Bryce Young, he just may be the second coming of the Messiah. Should probably capitalize that. He can do no wrong. Also, I wish we played the Falcons every week. I think everybody's thinking that, AJ. Everybody's wanting the Falcons on their schedule ASAP.
2:18:55Yeah, Bryce Young, I think he's definitely, what we've heard, he's taking a step. I mean, a playmaker loves what Bryce Young is doing. And what have you guys been saying about the Carolina Panthers now for a couple years? Go football. Go football team. And I think their quarterback has grown into a great quarterback for this squad. So, yeah, hopefully he can keep this momentum up. I know the Falcons, you know, aren't the toughest opponent, but I think Bryce still looks good and he's taking care of the ball.
2:19:15Pat McAfee:Yeah, you have to be able to execute. Ty Schmidt, we've come a long way from Bryce Young wearing that oversized backpack and thinking this guy was going to be a bust as he was getting benched for Andy Dalton. Now he seems like he's in control. New OC, got weapons, and the defense is going to be able to hunt. Are the Carolina Panthers primed for a big-time playoff push, Ty Schmidt? And we all agree, since the day they played the Green Bay Packers, I believe, the Panthers are a good football team. Yeah, no, I agree. And I think not only that, with some of these games that we saw this weekend that were just defensive, very boring, kind of a slog to get through.
2:19:50The Panthers are an incredibly fun watch. Their offense is electric. I mean, it's incredible. And going into this season, a lot of the talk with Bryce Young was, hey, are they going to pay this guy? We don't know if he's going to get an extension. There were talks that he was, and then they kind of tabled it, and it was going to be like, hey, let's wait and see. Let's see how he does this year. Obviously still early, but through two weeks, You can see that he has gotten much better and that he might be their franchise guy moving forward. So, yeah, why not? I mean, they damn near beat the Rams last year at home in the playoffs, and that division doesn't look great.
2:20:25So, I mean, if they can consistently put up 30-plus points every week, why not the Panthers? As we have said time and time again, this is a good football team, and they may be bordering on a great football team. Whoa!
2:20:37Pat McAfee:Yeah, they're looking for that great football team moniker. We certainly heard from the Panthers during the combine. It's like, I think they like the grind. I like the journey. Or they like the journey. And David Tepper has been an owner that has, what, been kind of out of the news. That normally means things are going great. Shout out to the whole team down there. Let's go to the next overreaction, shall we? This is Carlos Gavia Jr. Hashtag, I don't want to overreact. But the Raiders got a different vibe. Not just a coaching change, but a culture change. Raiders will be fighting for the AFC West title in January.
2:21:09Pat McAfee:I believe them, AJ. Why not? Yeah, why not? I think Kirko, as long as he is playing like he is, keep him in there, let Fernando sit back and learn. But Kirk's got three touchdowns in the first two games each game, right? So three touchdowns first game, three touchdowns here. Yeah, I know Dano said the Chargers let some free runners, their defense maybe was not playing their best. But I like what they have in Kirk. I know Kirk may not have the strongest arm in the league right now, but I think he knows where to go. He knows how to distribute it. And like you said, Mad Max Man is still doing it on the defensive side of the ball.
2:21:39Pat McAfee:That is Mad Max Man Crosby. He was supposed to be a Baltimore Raven. Instead, he is a Raider. Congrats to them having their best roster. And last one here from Michael Page at Mikey Page. Hashtag I don't overreact. But the road to Super Bowl 61 is back. Deshaun Watson is back. Our head coach is dropping F-bombs in a postgame presser. Our starting safety is picking fights with offensive linemen. The defense is full of dogs. Cleveland football might actually be back. D-Butt, is Mikey Page on to something here?
2:22:11Adam Schefter:You know what? It's over actually Monday, and I love this. I love this from a Browns fan. You never see this from Browns fans, even like in the offseason when everybody's positive. During draft season, everybody's positive. You never see this with Browns fans. So, yeah, I love this. Deshaun Watson, he's playing some good football. We've been saying it for, what, five, six years now? Hey, can he get back to old Deshaun? Can he get back to old Deshaun? Boston, we love him, what he's shown. Fanning, he's been great. Defense, can they continue to show up? So, yeah, it's a good start. I like the positivity coming from the Browns fan, and I loved what I saw from Todd Monken after the game with that.
2:22:43Adam Schefter:Oh, Browns going to Browns? Fuck that. I absolutely love this from – what's his name? Mikey? Shout out, Mikey. Yeah, Mikey Page.
2:22:51Pat McAfee:And here is Coach Monken. Browns are going to Browns. Fuck that. So the guys took that to heart. Thank you. Love everything about it. I'll see you later. Thanks. Write that. All of it. Send that to Tomlin. tell him we don't like it and the Browns is different now because I'm here. I like that. I appreciate that. I respect that and to the Miz and all the other Browns fans, maybe this is a year that isn't a laughing stock because we thought they were going to be in the shite division for the entire season. Now we're just one week removed and they already beat the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Tomorrow we will roll out the shite division and I'm a little bit worried about who's going to be on there and AJ, I want you to think long and hard on who you're going to be voting for to be in this shite division because the Colts looked good on Sunday night, AJ.
2:23:42They did. I mean, there's no moral victories, but, I mean, they almost won that football game, a primetime game against the Chiefs. So I'm not completely down on the Colts. I know we had some people that overreaction Monday. They may have been a little bit down. I'm not that down on them, to be honest with you.
2:23:56Pat McAfee:Okay, so your dauber's not that down? My dauber's like medium, medium, middle of the road, I guess, when it comes to the Indianapolis Colts. Yeah. All right, let's remember that whenever we're voting for the shite division. Semi. I'm semi. My dauber's semi. You're a semi? You got a little semi? My dauber is semi. Semi-dobbed? My dauber's in a cold tub. Oh, boy. Oh, is it real? It's not good. So bad. What, nine? Nine lost in a row? You could put a hot towel on the dauber, from my understanding. Knee and green sleeve over it, too. I don't know if it'll help. Yeah, I think it will help. Yeah. You got to wear little things on your toesies, the little rubber things on your toesies.
2:24:31You going to put a hot towel on your shaft while you're in the hot tub or cold tub? No. What? Are we talking about dauber? I'm talking about dauber. Dauber? What the hell are you talking about, AJ? I don't know what we're talking about, but he said cold tub. You said hot towel.
2:24:43Pat McAfee:Well, he said the dauber was down like it was a cold tub. I don't know what you're talking about. I'm not sure what's going on, to be honest, right now. But, yes, if you're talking about something very different than we were talking about, yeah, take that hot towel, put it on the dauber. Then whenever you get in there, first three, four minutes. So the initial shock is okay. The initial part of it isn't that bad. Yeah, then whenever you create that little air bubble that we're all trying to find in the cold tub, your dauber has already been insulated. So your dauber doesn't go down as much. I will say that hot towel is going to turn into a cold towel eventually.
2:25:17Pat McAfee:And dauber will find its way to go way down towards the end. But the initial shock to the dauber, A-OK. And that's what it's all about. The initial shock to the daubers of all these NFL fans through week one and week two. Week two wraps up tonight here in SoFi Stadium. Are the Rams going to be 0-2? Are the Giants going to be 2-0? So much can be said allegedly through the percentages of teams that are either undefeated to start the season or completely defeated. I think we covered that in a variety of ways. We cannot wait to see who wins tonight. Rams favored by six and a half. Matthew Stafford.
2:25:49Pat McAfee:We assume Aaron Donald. We're assuming no Puka, kind of the way that conversation has kind of been going. What will they look like with Aaron, without Puka? And what will the Giants look like one week removed from just pounding the Dallas Cowboys into oblivion? Can't wait to wrap it up tonight. Monday Night Countdown starts at 6. Boys, back at the Thunderdome. Good work, boys. You too. Have fun out there. Yeah. I'm going to have fun out there. I got people telling me that they hope I get kirked on national television. Fuck those people. I got people just completely lying about the things that I say to put me into another war that I don't believe in.
2:26:23Pat McAfee:It's been fun, I would say, to start the season. Got to see some new friends this weekend in Oxford. Got to see some old friends down in Oxford. It's been a glorious time. football is the greatest and we're all so incredibly thankful that we get to cover and it's all because of you that we get to do this shout out to the entire ESPN production crew who put this together big shout out to SoFi and the Rams for the positioning in which they put us here in the stadiums I'm very grateful and thankful to be here and tonight should be spectacular 6 p.m. Eastern Monday Night Countdown SVP J Mac myself Wow.
2:27:06Pat McAfee:Handsome Kelsey. He's what, the sexiest man on earth a couple years ago? Yeah. I got to remember that. That doesn't get talked about. Hey, tell him to kick slide again tonight, for real. He looks athletic. That's great. How about a three-yard kick slide? I do believe there's going to be some Jason Kelsey, Aaron Donald conversation. So you might see him. Nice. You know, we might see him. Might see him doing a little bit of this. And then Swagu. Big Swagu. I love doing television with that man. I really enjoy the way his brain operates. He's also taking shots at people on the internet, which I like.
2:27:35Pat McAfee:I didn't know we were still allowed to do that. I try to stay away from that because I'm weaponizing my followers when people say the rudest things to me and I respond. And then my followers tell these people what they should do to themselves. And then I'm the bad guy, even though terrible things were said to me. So shout out to Swagu attacking people so then I can kind of co-sign, which I will continue to do. Go to bat for yourself, Swagu. You're a legend. And on that note, football is the best. Con man, who do you got tonight? I will take the New York Giants plus six and a half. Ty Schmidt? I'm also on the Giants plus six and a half.
2:28:17Pat McAfee:Oh, man. One half of the hammer. Done. Cowboys AP Tone, who do you got? New York football Giants plus six and a half. Jeez. Holy hell. Nine-year NFL vet Darius J. Butler. Who do you got? New York football, James. Oh, no. Is this a team ride? The other half of the hammer. Cowboys, Bubba Gumpina. Who do you got? Big blue, baby. Big blue. Oh, no. AJ, I don't know if you saw. You had another good weekend picking games. You're seemingly seeing the board very well. You sit at 9-6. Me get 7-8, so I can't catch up to you. There was a couple deciding games. Me taking the Eagles, believing in them. They get a win.
2:29:02Pat McAfee:Don't cover. Congrats to you believing in Salah there. I take the Texans over the Bengals. You took the Bengals because you played for them, so I respect that. The Jaguars and Broncos, obviously a little bit different. So we've seen it pretty similar, but you're seeing it a lot better. So I think whatever you say here might sway me because I can't catch up to you. But, A.J., who do you like? How do you like it tonight on Monday Night Football? I mean, there's no question where I'm going here. I know Puka is most likely not playing. That doesn't make me feel great. But if Aaron Donald is on the field, even if he's not on the field, give me the Rams tonight minus six and a half at home.
2:29:36Absolutely.
2:29:37Pat McAfee:Are you doing that because of how much the people around you are so on the Giants? Thank God. That's part of it. But that's the thing. When you really think about it, whatever any of us think has no impact on the game. But I'm trusting my instincts once again. I'm taking the Rams. Love the over. Okay. You like the over? Okay. I didn't expect that, especially with Aaron Donald being back. What is the over-under right now? 47 and a half? Yeah, 47. Give me the over, too. Whoa. Okay. Yeah. Okay, AJ's doing two picks. Go ahead. I'll take – okay, because I can catch up to you then if you're doing two picks.
2:30:08Pat McAfee:I'll take the Giants plus six and a half and the under. Okay. All right, boom. I can catch up to you. I like that. I'm only doing that – yeah, you open the door. I'm coming right on in. I'm all right. Okay, and that's certainly what confidence can do to you. All right, boys, I appreciate you all. I'll see you back in Indianapolis tomorrow. That's a long flight. Yeah. Yeah, safe travels. Last night we were just sitting in a time capsule seemingly in the sky.
2:30:36Pat McAfee:Then you look up. How much time is left? Two hours and 45 minutes. Oh, shit. We're nowhere near this place. Then you look out, there's the mountains and then, you know, the fields and everything. It's a beautiful thing to see our country. But we were up there seeing it for a long-ass time. And obviously tonight there's going to be good cause for the travels. It should be special. Should be spectacular. I'll see you tomorrow. Be a friend. Tell your friends something nice and my change of life. We're in this thing together. Team on me. Team on three. One, two, three. Team. Goodbye. Before this,
