In short
Recap of the Falcons’ Week 3 turnaround led by Michael Penix, plus NFL Week 3 preview/picks and broader league news (Packers struggles, Giants QB situation, 49ers Nick Bosa/IR roster rules, NFL celebration fines). College football betting chatter and a conversation with Nick Saban about “letdown” games.
Guests and backgrounds
- Ian Rapoport (NFL insider; ESPN/NFL Network reporter).
- Nick Saban (college football coach; Alabama head coach).
- “Stanford Steve” (mentioned as a co-host/picks contributor; no background given in transcript).
- “Stanford Steve” and “Tone” are co-hosts; “Ty Schmidt” is a Packers fan/representative.
- “Rap Sheet”/AJ Hawk (host; former NFL player; AJ is in Indianapolis).
Key claims
- Falcons were historically bad early, then looked elite once Penix returned; Penix threw a pick early but then led an “unbelievable run.”
- Bijan Robinson’s control/vision and explosive burst could make him an MVP candidate; he only needed two catches because of his rushing impact.
- Packers are “dog-shit” after a disastrous prime-time home opener; blame centers on offensive line injuries and undisciplined play (penalties, missed tackles, inability to sustain drives).
- Giants: Jackson Dart is out for the year (meniscus + MCL). Jameis Winston starts; backup options are speculative (Jimmy Garoppolo, trades, etc.).
- 49ers: Nick Bosa likely won’t be placed on IR due to limited designated-to-return spots; they may keep him active but not play until ready.
- NFL is fining/penalizing certain celebrations (e.g., “people’s elbow” references, Kyle Juszczyk “juice” celebration).
Notable examples
- Falcons: Bijan’s 55-yard run; Penix’s early interception followed by improved play.
- Packers: Jordan Love hit/sacked 27 times through three weeks; penalties and third-and-11 moments; Christian Watson and Matthew Golden production despite losses.
- Giants: Dart surgery timeline; Jameis as $6M backup.
- College betting: Texas line movement; Ole Miss heavy betting after beating LSU.

Automatic transcript. May contain errors.0:00Pat McAfee:Hello, beautiful people, and welcome to this feel-good Friday on this fantastic football eve of great weekend, September 25th, 2026. This sports program begins now. Football is the greatest thing on earth. That's AJ Hawk, who is live in the Thunderdome in Indianapolis, Indiana. And AJ, I appreciate the hell out of you making the trip over there to Indianapolis. Now, a team took a trip to Lambeau. A team took a trip to history and to lore of what football is last night as being one of the worst teams in the history of the NFL. If they were to go another couple drives without making it to the red zone, it would have been the worst start in the history of an offense for the Atlanta Falcons in the history of the league because they hadn't even had a play in the red zone.
0:48Pat McAfee:All of a sudden, Michael Penix, his first time getting a start in 312 days, 317 days. We've heard multiple different numbers. nonetheless a long-ass time, and Stefanski and the Atlanta Falcons look like a completely different football team. They might be, AJ, the best football team on earth right now. Now, you wonder, how can a team go from absolute ass to absolute class? Well, it's with a quarterback who might be very efficient. Now, Kevin Stefanski is a gentleman who, con man, I know that you and I have talked about a little bit. He went to bed on Wednesday night praying to God, the football gods, whichever God he believes in, whatever gods are out there, maybe past friends and family who have passed away, he was talking to them.
1:33Pat McAfee:Just give me a quarterback is all he said. Turns out he might have one in this Michael Penix guy, Boston Connor.
1:39Nick Saban:Yeah, he was unbelievable. I mean, we talked about the first start for Penix in 300-whatever days, but he started the game a little shaky, and then he went on that unbelievable run. But from 2020 to 2026, Stefanski has had these quarterbacks. Baker aside, of course, we all know how that ended up. He kind of screwed that up or whatever. Stefanski screwed that one up.
1:58Pat McAfee:We think Stefanski head coach screwed that up. Even if it was some other situation, I think Stefanski has to wear that. He did mess up the Baker Mayfield situation. And they won a playoff game, AJ. Remember, Baker Mayfield and the Cleveland Browns went into Pittsburgh in an afternoon game, I think, and beat them in the playoffs. Then they get Baker out of that building. I think that is a massive mistake by Stefanski Conman.
2:20Nick Saban:For sure. But aside from Baker, the quarterbacks that Stefanski has had from 2020 to 2026, it's a long list. Deshaun Watson, Jacoby Brissett, Joe Flacco, Shader Sanders, Jameis Winston, Dylan Gabriel, Case Keenum, DTR, PJ Walker, Jeff Driscoll, Nick Mullins, Bailey Zappi, Cooper Rush, and finally Michael Penning. Stefanski having a quarterback is a big deal. And Jack Strand. And Jack Strand. That's right.
2:45Pat McAfee:And Jack Strand and AJ. It's like Kevin Stefanski was immediately hired by the Atlanta Falcons after the failure that was the Cleveland Browns. I mean, that's just what it was. That's why you fire a coach because it's so bad. He was immediately hired by the Atlanta Falcons. Us, I think a lot of people were like, so this guy just gets a pass for everything that was asked in Cleveland. It was an absolute trash bag up there with him as the head coach. Then it starts the way it does. And then last night, B. John Robinson, a guy that, man, he just tied a record since the merger. He has three 200-yard games from scrimmage.
3:22Pat McAfee:That's the most in the – tied for the most in the history since the merger of the league. 1970. I mean, this dude, we're just getting to realize him as an NFL player. He was on the Nightcap Amazon show, and he was doing an interview with the lads and Carissa Thompson. And he said, I'll tell you what, the thing we like about Stefanski is his leadership and how he's able to rally. And he said that, you know, after the loss to the Panthers, he came in there, and his exact words were, he sounded like Martin Luther King Jr. That's what he said. And I was sitting in a hotel room here in Knoxville, Tennessee, and I was aghast.
3:58Pat McAfee:Kevin Stefanski sounds like Martin Luther King Jr. And he basically said, like, hey, now is the time for us to decide. We can flip the switch. We can do this entire thing. Galvanize the team. Michael Penix comes back, and they have the best performance we've seen out of maybe a football team in some time. And we'll have to certainly ask Ty about that. But this Bijon Robinson character being unleashed in Kevin Stefanski's offense, especially with an efficient and good quarterback in Michael Penix, which is what it looked like as he continued to get better and better throughout the game. Atlanta might be a real problem this year, AJ.
4:29Pat McAfee:And Bijon might win the MVP.
4:30Nick Saban:No, I think Bijon, when I watched this game, like the first thing, obviously we expected Bijon to get a bunch of carries, a bunch of touches. I think he only caught two balls because he didn't have to. He was running all over the place. It's the style in which he plays, though, that I think is most impressive to me. Like, has he ever seemed out of control or chaotic? Whatever he – every time he hits, it gets the ball. He lets his linemen – he lets the blocks develop. He has a little bit of that Le 'Veon Bell-esque type stutter, that patience. It just – he feels like he's always in complete control with 15 guys around him.
5:00Nick Saban:But just look at these little moves, like these tiny, subtle moves and cuts. All that – even a little high step there while he's running down the sidelines to get an extra few yards. Like, you can't teach these things. You can't coach these things. I think these are the dude, he is so explosive. But his vision and patience, I've said for years and years, like running backs that have vision and patience. Like, do you ever see Bijan run up the back of his blockers? We know, guys, at all levels that they'll get the ball, hey, I'm going downhill, no matter what happens. And they run right into the back of their own lineman.
5:30Nick Saban:Like, Bijan never does that. He lets everything play out. He has the patience. And he's just so cool and calm, I feel like. And then when he decides to hit it, bam, see ya. and no one can catch him.
5:39Pat McAfee:AJ, and I think to your point, which are all incredible points to be made by the all-time leading tackler from the Green Bay Packers and what he notices from a running back versus maybe me, a person that just punted balls for a living for a little bit. But I think you can have patience and you can utilize your vision if you're explosive. You know, like Le 'Veon Bell, he was so incredibly patient. They talk about that. And you see a little bit of that in Bijon. I think we all agreed with that whenever we were talking earlier today. You see the patience of a potential Le 'Veon Bell. He's the best of all time whenever it comes to that.
6:06Pat McAfee:but it's because he had such burst. You can't just be patient and kind of slow. That'll never happen because then you're losing yards. And I think the guys who know they don't have the elite burst are the ones who are trying to get it every single time, and they potentially end up in the back of guys and on the back of their legs. Dijon's burst with the casualness, to your point, is just so alien-like. I mean, it doesn't make much sense. And then Brian Robinson Jr. comes in, and we forget about him many men. Many, many, many, many men. I do believe, right? That Brian Robinson. Yeah, he's unbelievable.
6:44Pat McAfee:So he gets to spell B. John Robinson. If you're a defense, it's like, okay, actual two-headed monster. And one of the monsters might be the best player in football right now. So I don't know why we didn't see the stench on that four-and-a-half spread last night. We pointed it out a couple times. Like, hey, this feels like a weird number. Just from everything that's been said about this Atlanta Falcons team, we were saying, that's stinky. Now, it's not sage stinky. You know, it wasn't like that type of stinky. What it was was like, that seems like that should not be what that is. Just in my mind, this early in the season, that doesn't make sense.
7:24Pat McAfee:We should have went with that because obviously the sportsbooks know something that we don't on a regular basis. We did get a big win last night. Hell yeah. We did get a big win last night. Shout out to Bijon. Shout out to Tucker Kraft. We'll break down how we won that, which was certainly in a cardiac situation. Tucker, punch out by Jesse Bates. Okay, where's he been all season? Of course, he makes that play there. Then there's a lateral bounce off of a guy. He catches it. Miraculous catch. Gain six. Nope. That was a run because it was a lateral. Okay, two drops. Okay, this guy's dropping balls now.
7:59Pat McAfee:Then we finally get it by one yard late. Jesse Bates with a great play. That was a heart attack. Then, you know, Jordan Love makes the play of the night for him. Now, we threw it backwards, actually, and then the guy batted it forwards. But since the throw is backwards, it's actually a rush. It's on a catch, even though you only need two yards for the Super Boost to hit. And then here, let's just feed him one. Okay, Matt LaFleur says, let's just give him an easy one. Maybe another easy one. No way. We're going to be two yards short of the Super Boost. Thank you, Tucker. Finally gets it, and we hit.
8:26Pat McAfee:And obviously, shout out to everybody that wrote alongside of us. If you're a little hesitant because we had lost a couple times, we understand. Believe me. We've been along this road before, and I completely forgot what it was like to be sweating like that for a super boost. It's been a few years since we've had these types of situations happen to our boost. But shout out to DraftKings for letting that one go, and shout out to us getting a big-time dub. Even money, maybe we're heading to the weekend, the best weekend ever. But I think the reason why the sportsbooks normally win is because it's so incredibly impossible to predict what the hell is going to happen.
8:56Pat McAfee:What your eyes see doesn't necessarily mean a damn thing. Let's go to one half of the hammer. Cowboys AP Tone. Tone, how the hell are we supposed to know what's going on? The Atlanta Falcons are the best team in football. They didn't have a play in the red zone, Tone. I mean, you said it. They just looked so bad the first two weeks. And, yeah, that was with Cooper Rush. And then you see the line last night, and you're like, Packers at home. They've won 12 straight at home to open these seasons. It has to be the Packers. But, no, it wasn't. And that's betting in the NFL. In week one, four teams lost by 20 points.
9:31The Rams, the Panthers, the Browns, and the Broncos. Guess what all those teams did in week two? They won, okay? And then in week two, the Falcons, oh, they lost by 20 points. Now here in week three, they win. So that's five in a row teams that have lost by 20 points winning the next game. Now we have to watch coming up here for later on this weekend. There was a couple other teams that lost by 20 points last weekend. The Cardinals lost by 20 to Seattle. They're plus eight and a half against San Francisco. The Dolphins lost by 20 to San Francisco. They're plus 10 and a half versus KC. Wow. And then the Giants lost by 20-plus to L.A.
10:03Rams, and they're actually favored at home to the Tennessee Titans. So those are the three left. We'll see if we make it eight in a row for teams that lost by 20 to potentially win the next game.
10:13Pat McAfee:AJ, how are we supposed to predict anything? Thank you for that stat, Tone, by the way. Great research. That's a really good number to have for all of us as we try to predict what's about to take place when we make our picks later in the show alongside Stanford Steve. But, AJ, why is that? Teams are trying to figure it out right now. Teams are learning the most here about themselves early. Michael Penix coming back drastically changes who the Falcons are. Maybe quarterback getting hurt drastically changes who other teams are. Why do you think everything's so unpredictable all the damn time in this league?
10:40Nick Saban:Yeah, obviously, if you have a quarterback situation in flux, I think that's the most impactful for your team. And how Penix played, too, though. Credit to him last night. He came out and threw a pick early, was not phased, continued on his way, and did not let that Lambeau crowd get into the game. So I was impressed with Penix and what he did coming back. But I think you never really know. week to week especially what you'd say the first four to six games of the season teams are trying to find what their identity is really I think last night the Falcons obviously realized what their true potential could be I don't they're not going to play this well every single game but in their mind why not why can't they do this they have so much firepower on offense and their defense plays very well but uh on the flip side of that the Packers I don't know they got to figure something out we know that what they only rushed for 19 yards or something last night I know you When you get behind, you can't continue to try to pound the rock.
11:28Nick Saban:But, yeah, just a tough overall night for the Packers at home. But week to week, Pat, I think we have no idea what's going to happen on the field.
11:34Pat McAfee:Yeah, and I think Packers fans are hoping week to week we have no idea what's going to happen on the field because what we saw on the field last night, absolute shite. Across the board, let's go to the owner of the Green Bay Packers, a man who I assume is rather level-headed, headed into a massive weekend for his Iowa Hawkeyes. Our Green Bay Packers fan Our Green Bay Packers Representative Cheesehead enthusiast Ty Schmidt How do we feel about everything going on With the Green Bay Packers That was bad last night There was a lot of stats That's the first home opener in 13 years Or whatever they lost Obviously it's the most amount of points they've given up in a home opener Since like 1920 something It was a long time I think it was like the 70s or whatever the case was Just an abysmal home opener but also something that, you know, I don't want to say felt like it was possible, but they certainly hadn't been a great football team thus far.
12:31Pat McAfee:A lot of injuries. Ty, where do you kind of sit right now after getting embarrassed on prime in front of Al Michaels? Okay, Al Michaels had to be on the call to watch that. You remember the first Green Bay Packers team he watched? Do you remember that? I don't, but I feel like Bart Starr was on the team maybe. Exactly. And he's going to watch that shit. He was actually on the call whenever they said the last time they gave up that many points in a home opener. And now Michaels is sitting there saying, what have they done to my baby? Ty, what do you think has been done to the Packers? And where do you sit right now?
13:02Honestly, I am kind of level-headed. It's one of those things where as you're watching that game, it's just – and given what happened the first two weeks, like, you just have to – you have to reset your expectations. Like, this is a dog-shit bad football team right now. Is that a level-headed take? It really is. It really is as simple as that. If you've watched them week in and week out, there's really no other way to say it. And I think the blame falls. That's the big thing is after something like that where you get embarrassed on national TV or prime, whatever you want to call it, everyone wants to start pointing the fingers.
13:38And a lot of people are pointing the fingers at the GM, at Brian Gutekinds, which I think is fair because they have the worst offensive line in the NFL by a wide margin. maybe in the history of the league. And it's like I understand injuries are a thing, but we know that. You don't go into a season thinking like, oh, our guys are going to all stay healthy and we're going to be good. And clearly the guys they have just aren't good enough. Jordan Love's been hit or sacked 27 times through three weeks. That's the most a quarterback's been hit or sacked in the last 17 years. So a lot of people want to blame him.
14:13It's like, well, what are you going to do? The guy has no time to throw. AJ mentioned they have the least amount of rushing yards per game of any team in the NFL. That is kind of their bread and butter. Whenever they're good, they run the ball exceptionally well. You're not going to win many games rushing for 17 yards. And then we talked about it yesterday, and I think this goes on coaching, LaFleur especially, but a lot of the other guys. They're super undisciplined. I mean, just the penalties. There was a moment last night. They go down and score. They're up 7-0. They get the Falcons in a third and 11, roughing the passer.
14:48First and 10, they would have got off the field. Next play, Bijan Robinson has a 55-yard rush that he takes down to the four-yard line. The Falcons score, and then the wheels kind of just fall off from there. They can't block anybody. They miss a lot of tackles. The defense didn't look great, but they're on the field the entire goddamn game because the offense goes three and out or is looking at a third and 11 on every fucking possession, which is kind of insane. Pretty level-headed. And it's just hard because, Pat, we were talking about this a little bit before the show. Christian Watson, I believe, again, they have a game up on everyone right now.
15:23But currently, he has the most receiving yards in the NFL. He's been great. They just paid him. Matthew Golden, I think he had five catches for 100 yards last night and a touchdown. You're excited about that. Lucas Van Ness, who is a guy they wanted to step up, he's been good. So they have all these pieces, and it should be great. But it's like the front office and the coaching staff the entire season was just, hey, we'll just wait until Micah gets back. Micah Parsons is going to cure all the issues we have, and we're going to instantly turn into a good football team when he gets back. That's just not the case.
15:55They're very clearly the worst team in their division, if not the worst team in the league right now. And it's just hard to imagine that things are going to get better anytime soon.
16:06Pat McAfee:Well, thank you for the level-headed response there. That was good. You know, it sounds like you're just A-OK heading into a massive weekend for the Hawkeyes, taking on Michigan. That's a big one. I see the hoodie. Yeah, I see the hoodie. You put that thing on, looked in the mirror and said, I'm going to be OK. I'm going to be OK. This team, I shouldn't even – I shouldn't let any of my emotional energy be drained by this Green Bay Packers team. That is the worst roster I've seen in some time. That is what you agree – that's what it sounded like I just heard out of you. Yeah, I mean, you know, we talked – like the idea that the Falcons – and again, you know, we've talked about it here so far.
16:38Like, listen, there's a chance with Michael Penix at the helm of this Falcons team is a pretty damn good football team. So, you know, we might be thinking a little bit differently about this game in a couple weeks. But you get your ass beat like that, like, why would you get all upset? They've looked terrible through three weeks. Like, I'm not going to invest any emotional energy into them until, you know, they start playing better. And then I will, because like you said, I got a big one this weekend that I got to focus on.
17:05Pat McAfee:You certainly do, and the college slate is packed and stacked. I cannot wait to be joined here by Coach Saban here in a matter of moments, but we are live in beautiful Knoxville, Tennessee. AJ's back in the Thunderdome, and there's a man joining us from his basement. Ladies and gentlemen, that's your rapport. Junior! You're in Knoxville right now? I am in Knoxville, Tennessee, that's right. You go to Ye Olde Steakhouse? Who? Ye Olde Steakhouse? No, I think I maybe have had the food before, but I have not been. It is a great steak place in Knoxville. That's a cool place to watch a game, man. Ye olde steak house?
17:46Yeah.
17:47Pat McAfee:I like that. That sounds really old in Tennessee. They smoke meat? Yeah. What type of meat? They got all sorts of things there. It's just a big slab of steak. It's great. I don't know about some folks, but they got some stuff. Can you eat a whole one yourself? So you're just gobbling this thing. I used to be a lot – I used to be not as spelt as I am now. So I would just – when I was covering Mississippi State and Alabama, I'd go regularly, man, I would just eat a humongous steak. It was great. Big fatso just give me all of me. They call me the gobbler, the meat gobbler. You know what I mean? And then little did they know at the time you'd become junior NFL insider for ESPN and NFL Network.
18:23Pat McAfee:And I will let you know that the ye olde folks are certainly proud of you. Now, let's talk about being proud. Michael Penix and Stefanski last night was spectacular. There was a lot of conversation about who the starter's going to be. Tua obviously expected to be starter because Penix wasn't able to practice for like two and a half weeks during training camp. Thought he'd be too far behind. He gets his first time playing with Kevin Stefanski. I mean, Austin Hooper scoring touchdowns. Shout out to him. He's been playing for 45 years in the NFL. Penix looked unbelievable and was only getting better as the game went on.
18:55Pat McAfee:What are vibes out of Atlanta after last night? and then obviously we'll pivot to the Green Bay Packers, which Ty has basically said I am forfeiting any emotion on for the rest of the season. I heard Ty when I was coming in. He does not seem to be in a very good place right now. We'll get to that in a second. No, he's completely fine. He did not have a level-headed reaction. He just doesn't give a shit about the team anymore. That's absolutely not true, but whatever. You know, the Falcons have been so interesting because, you're right, there was sort of like a quarterback competition, and it was really like, is Penix going to be healthy in time?
Read the full transcript
19:28That was sort of the competition. And you're like, well, until he practices full, Tua is the starter. Meanwhile, like when I went there for training camp, we talked to everyone and they're kind of like, like Penix is going to be it when he's healthy. And then it took, you know, into week three and they look so bad with Cooper Rush, bless his heart, as they say in the South you're in right now. and then you know the hope was maybe when Penix gets out there then we can finally show the offense that we're supposed to be and they got a lot of weapons offensive line is good they got a great running back another good running back behind them like this should be a good team and then you know second quarter on last night it was like okay like these guys are going to compete in this division and they're all not crazy and they're pretty good and that was really really nice to see and you know penix has been through a lot a lot of injuries that was nice to
20:21Pat McAfee:see him come back as well yeah i love watching him ball out and then on the other side the packers and obviously i think head coach and gm just got brand new deals they've invested a lot of money in a lot of different players they seemingly are ass on prime time last night making ty just want to give up after week three of the nfl season once again level-headed reaction is giving up on the team fair it's week three he uh he's a level-headed reaction thank you for being so level-headed ty I mean, what do you want me to do? You know, pot and, like, the team sucks. You know, I'm 35 years old. I got other shit going on.
20:54Okay? I'm not going to invest any energy or, you know, I'm not going to pot about it. You know, if they start winning, I'm going to watch the games, obviously. But my expectation is, hey, this team stinks, you know? So, it is what it is.
21:08Pat McAfee:Completely level-headed reaction there from the Green Bay Packers fan and Ty Schmidt, obviously. and we are very excited for him the rest of the way. But that team, I mean, Ed Policy's policy has been making big plays. They obviously get Gutekunst and LaFleur locked in long term. LaFleur comes out and, you know, talks about Jordan Love being his best quarterback that he's ever had, diagnosing plays at the line. Gutekunst has his entire team in here now. He's basically made all of these selections, and he's the one that has pieced this team together. We know he kicked Aaron Rodgers out of the Packers coming out of that dark hole.
21:41Pat McAfee:We were very lucky to learn about all that. But it feels like there was an automatic crowning of this Packers front office and head coach whenever they move on from Aaron Rodgers because I think a lot of people at that time and still currently, and I think probably forever, don't necessarily like Aaron's opinions as a person. So they probably feel a certain way, especially in the world that we're in right now. If you feel this way, that means you feel this way, this way, this way, this way, and this way. And I hate all those things. So people certainly, I think, don't like him, the person. So they were kind of pumped, I think, to see the Packers move on from him.
22:14Pat McAfee:But on that note, he hasn't played great football since then, had an injury with the Jets and everything like that. But they were crowned as like, yes, this is how everybody does everything. And now we're sitting here and it's like after a week three, we're wondering, is this team ever going to get going here in this particular regime? Or are we just thinking it was one bad Thursday night? I do not want to say it's one bad Thursday night. That's like not – no. I mean, and actually, if you go back at the end of last year, like, it's been probably a pretty bad two months, I would say. You know, I think that's probably fair to say.
22:46It's not something where you're like, oh, last night was an anomaly. Like, I'm really interested to see where this Packers team goes. And if you want me to cheer up, Ty, I can do it. Here's what I would say. Micah Parsons is not playing. We saw him on the sidelines. He's expected back, let's say, week six or seven. He is one of the best players in football. Hold on.
23:07Pat McAfee:That late? Hold on. Six or seven. We heard six definitely because that's Cowboys, right? Six or seven. Now we're kind of giving a little bit more wiggle. You know, it's injuries. You hope. I would – he said six. I believe six, but I'm just – you know, let's say six. Fine. Let's say we – Micah Pars expected back week six. I would say Josh Jacobs at some point will be on the field. You know, we'll see when his legal situation wraps up, what happens with the video, all of that. But that's their two best players. Offense and defense. So this team will be better with their best player on offense and their best player on defense.
23:43They can't block anybody. Is Micah going to play three positions on the offensive line and defense? No, I think Banks will be in. He stinks as well. Here's what I would say. Do you want me to judge a front office and a coaching staff? We're going to see. Because this is really when you judge. When everything's going great and a lot of others are throwing dimes and, you know, Golden's running. I mean, and, you know, Christian Watson's going to get me. When it looks good, it looks good. Now they have to figure some things out. They got a little bit of a long week. And, like, I think LaFleur is one of the better coaches in the NFL.
24:17We are going to see. Like, they are at the critical point now where I don't know which way they're going to go. And, like, so I'm not, like, Ty where it's sort of, like, you know, taking myself out. But, like, I'm just really curious. And here will be my other thing from last night. I thought the fourth quarter should have been only Packers fans reaction shots. That's what I would have been for.
24:38Pat McAfee:Okay. So you want to go at the director a little bit for the options and the choices that were taking place. I respect you. I want more reaction shots. Okay. I like you getting into that part of television as well. You might be a part of the problem on why they had to fire so many people or lay off people because of where you want to. Yeah. They're probably trying to open some doors for you to be a director and not even think about all the people that you got fired coming over from NFL Network with these big plans and dreams. Definitely. That doesn't seem right. What do you mean definitely? Yeah, it is, AJ.
25:06Pat McAfee:Nobody talks about that. I haven't heard that, I'm saying. I think we should potentially think about it. This guy's directing now? Okay. All right, this guy's directing primetime games for the NFL. Hans and Honey aren't going to like that, not one bit. AJ has a question for you. Away from the Green Bay Packers shite situation to another not fun situation. Obviously, big one for the week.
25:29Nick Saban:Yeah, rap sheet. Obviously, Jackson Dart goes down. We hear he's going to be out for the year. Do you have any update on what the quarterback situation looks like in New York with the Giants? Are they sticking with Jameis? And who would possible other quarterbacks be that they could bring in? Okay, so dart surgery today. So it's going to be meniscus and MCL. Meniscus is basically four to six months. So you heard Harbaugh kind of leave the door open. It's like, theoretically, if Jameis leads him to the playoffs and they're going deep in the playoffs, it's going to be a conversation. That would be a great conversation to have if you are a member of the New York Giants.
26:04We'll see. So it is going to be Jameis this week with Jake Hayner in as the two. And if Jameis is good, then I'd say probably that's where they'll roll. If he's not, then you start thinking of is Jimmy Garoppolo, who I know colleague Mike Garofalo has mentioned there's been some contact there. Does he come in and talk to the Giants? Do they make a trade? Someone who's been with Matt Nagy, maybe like a Gardner Minshew, Justin Fields from the Chiefs. They have a really good three in Garrett Nussmeier. Like, start talking about who they could trade for. What about Derek Carr?
26:38Nick Saban:Do they kick the tires on Derek? Whoa. I don't know that he can throw to a good enough. Remember, he never had surgery. So, like, I don't think he can throw to a point where he could be in an NFL game. Okay. What about Anthony Richardson? I have not heard that. That would surprise me.
26:58Pat McAfee:He was available for trade. Everybody was talking about him being available for trade. I imagine he is still available. Although, talking about backups, here really is the problem, though. Because, you know, whose backup are the Giants going to trade for? But then it's like, why would anyone trade their backup? Nobody wants to trade their backup. I was thinking of, like, all right, Mitch Trubisky was with Matt Nagy. That would make sense. He's been in a bunch of systems. And it's like, why would the Titans do that? Nobody wants to trade their backup ever for anyone. Got it. Which is why, you know, I just, J.J.
27:36Pat McAfee:McCarthy, he wasn't even backup, right? Well, he is now, I guess. But he would have been like third string because Carson went in, right? Right. I mean, I guess he's back to third string now because Kyler's back starting. So he's third string. So it's like J.J. McCarthy, Harbaugh world. These are all just fantasies we're thinking because teams aren't willing to do this type of thing at this stage of the season. Because maybe if a team is mailing it in, know that they stink, we can pick up a fourth rounder, a fifth rounder, something as we go forward later in the season, maybe towards the trade deadline.
28:06Pat McAfee:Or you just think that in general this is not something that people are going to want to do ever, even though Joe Flacco got traded in the division last year or two years ago. He did when they were trying to save the season. And I think with the Giants, we'll find out. Because Jameis is going to play, and I really think he's going to play better. Couldn't play worse. Would be a challenge to play worse. Agreed. We like Jameis. We think he'll play better as well. I hope so. But he's making$6 million as a backup. That is the kind of money where you should be able to come in and put a pretty good product on the field.
28:42But if he's not good, then do they spend on Jimmy Garoppolo? It's not going to be cheap. They might. Or do they say, we're going to give up a mid-round draft pick because we're going to try to salvage our season with a backup that, you know, we're going to give a team a deal they can't refuse.
28:58Pat McAfee:Got it. Okay, so we'll continue to monitor the situation. And Jameis Winston, we hope he plays incredible this weekend and maybe this is his team going forward. There's some other things popping up around the NFL that I don't like, personally. I don't like it one bit. It feels like you've got something going on on the screen here. You look like a little bit of a mind. No, I'm back to you. There you go. Sorry. No, I was, just full candidly, my good colleague Adam Schefter just tweeted about, we had it reported on Nick Bosa earlier today. And we're trying to figure out whether or not he was going to be placed on IR.
29:31Schefter has reported that they're leaning against placing him on IR because they are out of spots.
29:38Pat McAfee:Oh, so designated to return only has a certain amount of spots. So there is only a certain amount of people. This is a ridiculous problem. this is the Niners in a nutshell though, right? I mean, kind of. He gets hurt on a practice, in a practice, okay, but can't put him on IR to go ahead and rest and know that he has four weeks off and we're able to bring somebody in for him because we've had so many other people injured already that they're already taking up the spots to bring somebody back. If we were to put him on IR, he'd be on IR for the rest of the season. Is that accurate? Yes. So then it's like, okay, well, if he misses three games, let's say, if he misses four games, is it worth putting him on IR.
30:14It's probably not. So, sounds like they're just going to ride it out, have him active but not play until he's fully ready to go.
30:22Pat McAfee:Senior got you on that one. Senior got you on that one. Alright, let's go after something. We're tag teaming things. I don't like that the NFL is doing this. It feels like we had a time where this was becoming something and everybody hated it. Even the NFL ended up hating it and they loosened up the rules a little bit. Tone has a question for you about the absurdity taking place around fines right now. Yeah, Ian, the time that Pat is referring to is the no fun league times. Remember those times? Those were fun. They weren't. Now we're out here finding for celebrations of fallacies, I believe is the word that they described it as.
30:58And beer chugging in such a... Fallacy. My bad. Appendages. You know what I'm talking about.
31:06Pat McAfee:People's elbow. What's going on, Rap? It's very early in the season to be doing this. Are they trying to send a message?
31:17I'm sorry. I'm thinking about the people's elbow. Because it's not the elbow. I mean, it's something.
31:24Nick Saban:What is it? It's not the elbow. What do you mean it's something? We heard Jamar straight from his mouth. He said it was the people's elbow.
31:30Pat McAfee:Yeah. He just said it because he didn't want to be ridiculous, he said. He didn't want to be ridiculous, which I respect. He didn't actually say this, but you could tell he was thinking it. If he was to do the full people's elbow, the throw of the elbow pad, the cross up over top, the run off one side, the skip up over top to the other side and do the entire thing. He would definitely deserve a penalty for that. Definitely. If he did all that. I'm here for all of that, though. But I think he could have definitely depicted the people's elbow a little differently. But that's the both of them. But, yes, I think the people's elbow was certainly something that he was thinking.
32:07Pat McAfee:And maybe they were thinking something differently. which goes back to the intention of these celebrations being judged now by the NFL as they're finding them. Kyle Juszczyk, also known as Juice, says he was chugging juice. I don't even drink. I drink like maybe four times a year whenever George Kittle kind of forces me into it. It's not really my thing. I'm always drinking juice. I am the juice man. And if you even look at the thing, he might have been sprinkling a little bit of powder into some water for him to go ahead and do that there. Now, the lads here, there's somebody that shotguns an energy drink, okay?
32:37Pat McAfee:Thank you to them. Go ahead and getting jacked up in there. And then he got to people's elbow. But why is this a point of clarification this year by the NFL? They all decided, hey, there was a time when the NFL sucked when nobody had any personalities. Let's go back to that. That's what people are looking for in 2026, when everybody's seemingly having a lot more fun with life and sports. Definitely. Go ahead. Go ahead, pal. I'm just laughing. Just showing the – anyway. Yeah, it gives reference rap. A people's elbow. Um, so from time to time, this does happen where the NFL sees a bunch of players doing something and they say, we are going to basically, I don't want to say over fine, but just find everyone all at once.
33:18So everyone takes notice. Like this is not okay. Now the use check one was ridiculous because he literally has a nickname of another drink. It's not beer, but his nickname is literal juice. Um, and so, you know, my guess is he's going to, I know he's going to appeal and my guess to see he's going to win, but at least everyone has taken notice. Now, the NFL is watching Celebration, so if you're going to do it, try not to shotgun an energy drink, which obviously is something people do, or try not to roll the elbow out there for people to see. I think it feels to me, elbow, it feels to me like they're trying to get people notice now and just be mindful of what you're doing.
33:59Pat McAfee:Roll the elbow out? He's dropping the elbow. He's dropping an elbow. He's not rolling it out there. He's not ungrilling the elbow. Okay, so if Bud Light was to sponsor these celebrations, though, we'd be cool with that? I do think it is a little bit of a hypocritical situation. And I'm not somebody that thinks there's stuff that isn't also hypocritical that happens on a very regular basis. We understand how people can somehow view people that talk about sports on TV and are fans of sports and actual players in sports gambling and how that's different, okay, vastly different, especially because how much sports gambling is a part of sports media now and a part of sports.
34:43Pat McAfee:So us judging players who are gambling, in some people's minds, hypocritical. Now, those people don't have a clue of what's going on because obviously it's vastly different whenever you're a player. First, you're talking about the sport, but you can certainly see how gambling, getting involved, is a risky dance from a perspective standpoint. Whenever you have, what, they've had Crown Royal deals that have been gigantic. They've had so many different whiskey deals that have been huge. I mean, who actually sponsors, doesn't Bud Light actually sponsor the weekly selly or whatever it is? Exactly. So, like, whenever you talk about, like, these guys drinking phantom beers versus, and we love Shane and Peyton and all the lads there, them having actual beers a second and a half after this in a commercial.
35:32Pat McAfee:I guess you could say, well, players and retired players and comedians are different, just like you do with sports gambling. But it feels like if you're scared to promote boozing, the thing that might actually be the promotion of the boozing is the booze and not the hand booze that some guys drink. I don't know. It feels hypocritical. And I'm coming from a position in a show that is obviously sponsored with DraftKings. So, and then people can talk about that with gambling. So I guess you can find it, but this feels very dumb by the NFL in this. I wonder if they're going to start finding for socks going down a half an inch or a shoulder pad being no, but remember there, when they cut down on the dancing and the personality, they had a hyper breakdown of the uniform because they wanted everybody to look the exact same.
36:19Pat McAfee:They want everybody to act the exact same. So whenever they're done, you're gone. We can just fill you back in here. So we don't need anybody sticking out. We don't need sack dances. We don't need touchdown dances. We don't need your socks down. We need everybody to look the exact same so we can just plug in place. And in theory, that makes sense. But then in real life with humans who are fans, they go, this is fucking boring. Why would I watch a machine play football? So it just feels like some stupid decisions being made by the NFL. But, you know, everywhere you look, there's stupid people doing stuff.
36:49Pat McAfee:So, you know, you just got to kind of expect that rap. Yeah, I mean, I would say I was surprised by this. because the NFL has embraced the personality so much. Maybe they felt too much. I have some calls to make. I'm curious as well. But maybe they want to bring it back a little bit, but I hope we don't go back to the point of like everyone looks the same. Everyone, you know, hands the ball to the ref. Like it's cool. Like you say like, oh, act like you've been there. They haven't all been there. Some people want to do like the Mickey Mouse celebration, like Isaiah Rogers or no, not Mickey Mouse.
37:23It was hot dog, hot dog, hot diggity dog. Dog hug. That's great. Great song. Nailed it. You know, I mean, I hope Cam Bynum has a pick six so we can see whatever he's got cooked up. I love this.
37:36Pat McAfee:Yeah, you keep hoping in one hand and, you know, shit in the other for the Clevelandapolis Colts to have success on the defensive side of the ball. See which one. Yeah, they suck, Rap. All right, Rap, we appreciate you. We got Nick Saban waiting, and it's been way too long, to be honest with you here. That's fair. Tell him I said hello. I was one of his favorite reporters ever. Doubt it. Hey, Rap Sheet says hello. Do you know who that is? Love Ian. Yeah, he's saying no, so he didn't say hello. He didn't say hello. Favorite guy ever, right? Loves me. Favorite reporter ever. He did not say that.
38:10Pat McAfee:I can't read. Gumpy, did he say that? Gumpy, I don't know. No. Replay? Said he was kind of a little fellow. He said that? Yeah, he did. Nick Saban said that to you about another little fellow? Drinking that water over there. Wow. I didn't know he said that about you, Rap. I didn't hear that because I got headphones in, but Gumpy heard it, I guess. Yeah. Gumpy also 5. 10, I think. 11. Me too. Growing by the day. Yeah. Same. I'm not going to say anything about anybody else. You're the male ladies. You're the male. All right, AJ, we got to set up a goat, shall we?
38:48Nick Saban:Yeah, we do. Hey, Tone, obviously we come to you. What's all the money on this weekend? College football-wise. College football-wise. We have a giant slate, obviously, of awesome games. Where's all the money, bro? Yeah, one of the best slates. No, the best slate of the year so far. Six ranked games. That doesn't include Georgia and Oklahoma as well. Bama and South Carolina. Tennessee, Texas, obviously, where game day is. Where's the money on that one? What's the line? Texas is getting some money. It's bounced between five and a half and four. It's been moving around all week long, so four and a half right now.
39:19But as far as money goes, the entire world, including all the countries outside of the U.S., is on Ole Miss this weekend because they're dogs down in Florida and they just saw them beat LSU. That's one of the most bet games of the year they're talking about right now as far as one-sided. But no, a great slate of games this week and the best of the year so far.
39:37Nick Saban:Was that something for you? You were a guy who played in a lot of big college football games. That letdown week that Tony's talking about that everyone's kind of betting on Florida with. How is that if you were to play in a massive ranked game early on in the season, how that next week was for you? Yeah, that's a real thing. You can definitely have, if you let it, you have great coaches that kind of do that and make sure that you don't take your foot off the gas. And we have a great coach I know who I believe is already set up with Pat that is a master of that. Right, Coach? Right, Pat? Yes, he certainly is.
40:06Pat McAfee:This is the greatest college football coach of all time, AJ. Nick Saban. Yeah, Coach! Coach, how you doing? Can you hear them? I'm doing great. I can hear them fine. Okay. Did you hear Rap Sheet? What are your thoughts on him, Ian Rapoport? He said you loved him. Yeah, I loved him. He was full of shit when he covered me, and he's still full of shit. Whoa! Yes! Junior! Have a feel-good job. He was good, and it's no surprise to me that, you know, he's done really well in the business because he was objective, and he was always fair, and I always appreciated that. Yeah. It feels like you have no idea who Rap Sheet is.
40:43Pat McAfee:Would you read stuff, Coach? Would you read stuff and they bring it to you?
40:45Nick Saban:Would your PR people bring you stuff that was written about your team and would you actually read it? No.
40:51Pat McAfee:Really? Never, ever? You would never hear what the outside noise is? Did somebody come and tell you, like, hey, this is kind of what is being said about the team right now, so maybe the team is hearing this? Is that the type of stuff, how you would hear about it? Yeah, and they would tell me things that I needed to know that were happening that I might get asked about. But I tried to stay away from the good and the bad, whatever was being written because I didn't really want it to affect, you know, like what I was trying to do with the team. But I used to use the media a lot in terms of my press conferences and the message that I sent to the media, and I was really talking to the team.
41:28Oh, yeah. So I was trying to use them, to your point about the rat poison that people have, because when you lose your edge in this game, man, you get bad quick. So it was always a fight, especially when you were dealing with success, to keep people on edge so that they had the intensity that you needed to be able to play well.
41:49Pat McAfee:That's what they were just talking about, the letdown game. And, A.J., A.J., you and I have talked about this plenty of times, and we're pretty similar humans, I do believe. You know, we don't need the rah-rah speeches and all that type of shit. We're not really into that. But we never fully understand. Like, I would have a bad day, and I didn't know why. Like, I had no idea why I was having a bad day. Now, my preparation was everything. Warm-up was good. And for some reason, I just can't hit a damn ball. There's some games, I think, where AJ thought he was going to be fantastic, and then he had a bad game.
42:16Pat McAfee:And we wonder whenever we're looking at other teams, it's like, do coaches know if their team's going to have a bad game? Or does that shit come from nowhere? Because there's a lot of potential letdown games. I mean, Ole Miss obviously has the biggest opportunity to fall off of a climactic volcano that they were on top of last week down there in Oxford. But it's like, how do you judge? and how do you figure out whether or not your team is about to maybe fall off a cliff before we even know? Because I don't even think players know at that time. Yeah, well, I think that's one of the most difficult things to do when you're a coach is to try to get a feel for where your team is.
42:48Because we had weeks where we would really practice well and prepare well and then be flat as a pancake when a game comes. And then we had other times when I am just pulling my hair out because practice is not very good, people are not very focused, and then we would get to the game and really play pretty well. So it's just so hard to figure out. But I think that, you know, from a psychological standpoint, what I was always trying to do is get the people to have the right sort of psychological disposition of what you had to do to be successful on a consistent basis and try to get them to buy into that and not give these rah-rah speeches and emotional things to try to get people up and down because that doesn't really last.
43:30You know, you've got to have the competitive character inside of you to always take the next challenge and always try to be the best that you can be. And, you know, that's not normal. I mean, normal is do what you got to do to get by. I mean, we all made an A on the first test, screwed around for two weeks, made a C on the next one, and get a B average, and we're happy about that. Right? I mean, that ain't how you win a championship. That's not how you be the best that you can be. But that's normal.
43:55Pat McAfee:See, I started at C at the top there, F. And then you see there's a D. And they say D's get you to be eligible for the bowl game. That's all you need. That's all I needed out there, but I understand what you're saying about relief syndrome, I believe, is the way you've potentially described it before. Let's talk about some relief syndrome potentially. This Texas team now comes into the eighth largest stadium in the world here at Tennessee, which is a beautiful place. I'd like to hear your thoughts on playing here and how big it is. The orange is bright. It's like you're walking out of a casino at 6 a.m.
44:28Pat McAfee:Now, I'm not saying that you've been there all night. Hopefully, you're winning. But when it's really dark and they walk out, it's like this orange is obviously incredibly bright. They're obviously all in. Hypo's got a quarterback potentially, this young freshman. And it feels like they could potentially get a massive win over the number one team in the country, even though freshman quarterbacks going against the number one team in the country haven't had a lot of success. Texas, though, Ohio State, maybe it was that Super Bowl-type mentality. Is this one that they could potentially get trapped in because they have so many big games?
44:55Pat McAfee:How do you view this from both teams' perspective in this big one here in Knoxville? Yeah, first of all, to answer your first question, this was one of the most difficult places to play in the SEC. I mean, I always thought LSU, A &M, and Tennessee were the most difficult places to play, especially if the game is a game and the fans can stay in the game. I mean, it really gets difficult. But the one thing that Tennessee does, and they've had a tremendous amount of success, is everybody talks about the young quarterback, but they haven't put a lot on the guy. They have run the ball so effectively, and this spread offense that they run where you're so spread out, it's really hard to disguise what you're doing on defense.
45:33And, you know, Heupel's a master at taking advantage of whatever he sees out there. You know, because it's this go fast to go slow again. It's not always go fast, and he wants to see what you're in and get in the best play. So that's going to be a challenge. I know Will's doing a great job on defense for Texas, but they're going to have to stop the run and make this freshman quarterback make the plays in the game to win the game. On the other side of the coin, you know, Tennessee hasn't given up a lot of explosive plays in a passing game. They've only had two plays over plus 20 yards in three games in the passing game.
46:05But they've given up a lot of explosive runs. So, you know, is Texas going to be able to run the ball and control the ball that way? Because Arch hasn't been very good at throwing the ball down the field so far this year, even though he's been pretty good at throwing the short stuff in the screens. But to make explosive plays down the field, which if you're running the ball, opens a window for that. I don't know if Texas can take advantage of that or not.
46:28Pat McAfee:It's going to be an electrifying atmosphere here. It's not the only one, though. I mean, there are games across the board in the SEC and college football as a whole. Let's not just act like the SEC because they have a record amount of ranked games taking place. They're the only ones playing football in college. Well, West Virginia is obviously what's coming up here. I can tell. Okay. I was going to say in the SEC, but you're right. You're right. The next biggest game we should be talking about, West Virginia, Oklahoma State. There are some games this weekend that feel like they have long-term repercussions on the season.
47:03Pat McAfee:West Virginia, Oklahoma State's one of them, and we will certainly talk about that. There's another one happening down there in A &M, LSU. AJ has a question for you about that, Coach.
47:13Nick Saban:Yeah, Texas A &M travels to LSU. We know it's going to be an unbelievable atmosphere, I guess. How do you see this game going? I feel like I know Texas A &M is a pretty large underdog. I would imagine that they are ready to get back out there and try to right their wrongs from last week. But how do you see this game going? Do you think A &M gives them a good game? I think both teams will bounce back. But I do think that, you know, there's a stat in the SEC when you play at home at night in the SEC. I mean, it's like an unbelievable percentage of the home team winning. And LSU obviously is one of the most difficult places to play.
47:46And Lane is going to do a really good job of trying to get this team to come back. But now losing this tight end, Travis Green, I mean, this guy was a difference maker. That'll be something that they have to overcome. But I think LSU's defense will carry them. What I'm concerned about with A &M is quarterback didn't play very well last week, and the defense was not very good at all. And Kentucky just controlled the game against them. And they got to get the defense fixed if they're going to have a successful season. And obviously, Marcel Reed's got to come around and play really well as well.
48:18Pat McAfee:Yeah, so let's continue to talk about quarterbacks, especially in the SEC. AP Tone has a question for you, Coach. Yeah, Coach, I think everyone's been so excited about the SEC early in the season because of the success of the young quarterbacks so far, especially the freshmen, the true freshmen, the redshirt freshmen, all of them. Did you see over your coaching career that the young freshman quarterbacks coming in, did they get better as your coaching career went on because of all the seven-on-seven camps, the personal coaches, stuff like that? Or was it always like, oh, this is a freshman quarterback?
48:47How did you feel about that over the course of your career? Well, I think that because of the exposure these guys get early on, they're more ready to play when they come in. But to me, the whole thing to me with the quarterback position is, what is the guy's mental makeup to be able to sustain good plays and bad plays? Because some of these guys, they're going to have some adversity. They're going to have some things that go bad that they have to overcome. And the thing that impressed me, and I know we're not talking about this guy, But, you know, Mississippi State gets behind 16-0 last week at South Carolina.
49:22Pick, I think. And this Camaro Taylor guy is like, you know, shit happens and just keeps playing. And, I mean, they take the game over, you know, on the road, in a difficult place to play. And this guy's a young quarterback. I know he's not a freshman, but he's an outstanding player. So that shows me that this guy has the right stuff, you know, to play this position. because you're going to get criticized more at this position. You're going to get more credit to this position. So you've got to deal with the ups and downs more at this position. And young guys sometimes can do that. Sometimes they struggle with it.
49:58Pat McAfee:I mean, you called them the truth in the light, and I heard you say that. Then I picked against them last weekend on game day. And as it was coming out of my mouth, I'm like, give me South Carolina. I just thought to myself, like, Saban knows ball pretty good. He said this guy's going to be good. and if you have the best quarterback on the field, more often than not, if everybody else can keep up, you're going to win the game. That's why that Ole Miss game against LSU, Trinidad Chambliss took that game over. Took it over. I mean, no question asked, he decided to win that game. Feels like Kamario Taylor might be a guy who can do the same damn thing.
50:31I think you might be. I'm going to tell you one thing I learned last week. I'm never picking against Trinidad ever again. I mean, that guy is the playmaker of all playmakers. You talk about a point guard that can score and create plays for other people in a game. Nobody does it better than him.
50:49Pat McAfee:Yeah, and I like that you did it right in his house, too. You know, you went down in there. You're the only one that picked LSU down there. Respect. Yeah. Respect, yeah. I know. I should have picked West Virginia, though, too. Yes, let's talk about that. We got Michael Hawkins, Jr., and quarterback for West Virginia. He's seemingly unstoppable as well. West Virginia takes on Oklahoma State, 7 p.m. Saturday night in Morgantown. Should have been where a damn day was. Hey, once again, a lot of people have to make decisions. And when they make those decisions, nothing's easy, especially whenever you talk about a schedule, a calendar, humans, where they are, what's going on, and also other gigantic games happening.
51:24Pat McAfee:Would have been biblical in Morgantown. No question. Would have been biblical. Rich Rodriguez, though, seemingly has his team. And as we talk about West Virginia, you start bouncing around the Big 12. It's like there are some teams over there that are actually having great years to start this thing. maybe the Big 12 isn't as ass or as far apart from the Big 10 SEC and the ACC as everybody was seemingly talking about. Yeah, well, I think there's a lot of teams in the Big 12 that actually have a chance, and I think West Virginia obviously is one of the teams that's a little bit of a surprise. But one thing that I like about West Virginia in this game against Oklahoma State, when you can run the ball like they've run the ball, the quarterback and the tailback, you can shrink the game.
52:02And when you're playing against a team like Oklahoma State who's going to throw it and the quarterback's going to be the whole game and all that. If you can keep the ball away from him enough and control the tempo of the game by running it, I think that gives you a hell of a chance to win.
52:15Pat McAfee:It's going to be wild there in Morgantown. Coach Pagano told a story about 1996 in Morgantown when Miami blocked a punt to win the game. And then the shenanigans that happened afterwards, I'll tell you, that's all alleged and maybe actually proven at this point. But nonetheless, that place is one of the best atmospheres in all ball. I've gotten a chance to now experience it if everybody's all in feels like everybody's all in style of play feels like the way they're winning they like it and Rich Rod is a character I mean no he's got a hat crooked this year have you seen that boys his hat no I haven't noticed that he's got a crooked hat I don't know if it's like the shape of his head and he just doesn't care but that thing sitting on his head sideways a little bit like coming off like it's 2002 Plumborough Pennsylvania you know like that type of style of hat and he's just losing his mind out there while the hat is bouncing back and forth I don't think he's had a haircut in three months I mean he is he's all the way back to being coach Rod yeah and and I think it's great because you know the people in West Virginia have a lot of pride you know I'm from there we all have a lot of pride in our state and he's a West Virginia guy and for him to be successful there makes it double good yeah and Maybe you'll pick them.
53:31I'm picking them.
53:32Pat McAfee:You better. Don't actually. Don't do that now that I'm thinking about it. Need you to not, right? But, you know, sometimes when you pick the other team, you know, I used to hate it when I was a coach. And, you know, we got a night game or whatever, and we're watching game day. I'm watching game day in a room with Miss Terry, and you guys all picked Alabama. It used to piss me off. I wanted you guys to pick somebody else because I knew that our players were sitting there listening to how they were getting picked. and that rat poison is just pouring in. I today think that everybody thinks we're going to win.
54:05That's why you picked Virginia? That's why I picked Virginia. It finally comes out.
54:09Pat McAfee:I like you. Thank you for doing that. Ty has a question about the Big Ten. Obviously, the Big Ten has the current reigning national champions. Last year they did as well, and then the year before that they did as well. Ty has a question for you, Coach Saban. Just stats here. Well, you know, he is right. Right, but also the Big Ten maybe doesn't look quite as good as the SEC to start this year, but there is a couple massive matchups. The one I want to ask you about in Ann Arbor on Saturday between Michigan and Iowa, is there anything you can do in a week leading up to a game like this, Coach, to kind of simulate?
54:43Like everyone's talking about, hey, the final in this one might be 10-7. The defenses are going to be super, super physical. We know Michigan and Iowa like the way they play, especially Michigan now with Whittingham, but is there anything you can do in the week leading up to that to kind of simulate how this game is going to go? You know, I always try to emphasize with our players, you know, it's going to be about what we do, how we play, you know, the style that we want to try to dominate in, be more physical, dominate the competition. You know, it's not about winning the game. It's about defeating the other team.
55:17And it might take – you're not going to defeat the other guy on the first play. It might take 50 plays, but you've got to be relentless in how you compete in an environment like this, in a game like this. It's going to be physical on both sides of the ball. So you get them ready for that. You get them ready for that. And I used to tell them all the time, you know, you never know how they're taking your punch. You never know how you – so you've got to keep delivering and delivering and delivering. And, you know, it's going to be a close game. But, you know, one thing about the NFL, like 70 % of the games are a touchdown or less.
55:47College football, there's so many blowouts. So can you have your team be able to execute when it is a close game? That's one of the things that I always try to emphasize with our players, that they need, you know, when do you need to be your best as a football player? It's when the game's on the line. That's what we try to train them to do.
56:05Pat McAfee:Hey, I don't know if you know a fun fact about the beginning of this NFL season, to your point about being able to coach. In the first week of NFL football, four teams lost by 20, and then they all went on to win in week two. And then now last week Falcons lose by 20. They went on to win this week. So 5-0 currently, teams after losing by 20 winning the next week. That's amazing. It's insane. Just what's real, what's not real, who teams are, who teams aren't. Hopefully here in Knoxville we'll find out. If the Tennessee Volunteers are for real, same with Texas. This is the greatest college football coach of all time, Coach Saban.
56:40Pat McAfee:Yeah, Coach. To your point about these teams, losing by 20 and then winning, okay? I think the outside noise has a big impact on that. On motivation? Yeah, on how it affects people and their edge and competing. I think anything you say is probably the truth. We'll get to a break. Coach David will be gone. You all are the best. Goodbye.
57:05Before this, there's this.
57:14Nick Saban:As you celebrate the game, take a deeper look at its roots. The people growing the grass, paving the lots, welding the goalposts, inspecting every football. 58:10Pat McAfee:Football! He is the absolute greatest, and I'm so incredibly lucky to be down here in Knoxville, Tennessee, as the Tennessee Volunteer Football Team hosts the Texas Longhorns. That is A.J. Hawk right there. He's a college football national champion, Super Bowl champion, Ryder Cup winner, an absolute stallion of a man. AJ, how you doing? How's Thunderdome? And how is Ty, after last night's ass-beating of your Green Bay Packers and his by the Atlanta Falcons?
58:37Nick Saban:Yeah, it's great to be here at the Thunderdome. Ty seems to be doing okay. He's not completely down the dumps. I know he said he was going to have some – he was very level-headed and level-headed takes, and then he went on to, I think, say what, this is the worst team in the last 20 years. You mentioned really downgraded a bunch of different position groups. Worst O-line, okay, which I think is true. I think the stats bear that out. But in one game, you can't do off of one game. I guess we're three games in, but you're overreacting to one game last night. Yeah, definitely. They've looked very bad through these first two.
59:05But, no, my big thing is, like I said, I'm still a fan. I'm still going to watch the games, but it changes your expectations big time. Coming into the season, I thought when the O-line was healthy and all this kind of stuff, even with Micah out, it's like, hey, let's get through the first six games where he's not playing. I still believe this team can go win a Super Bowl. I don't believe that right now. That doesn't mean I'm not going to watch the games, But that also means when I watch them get their asses kicked by the Falcons on a Thursday night, like I'm not going to – I'm going to flush it, you know, because it's like why would you get upset at a team like that who looks like they just aren't very good?
59:39Pat McAfee:Yeah, I think the Packers probably shouldn't give up. I don't think the Packers fans should necessarily give up because Mike is coming back week six or week seven. Yeah, I didn't love hearing that. Yeah, because I was thinking we were here in week five or week six. Bingo. I kind of penciled in, hey, Bears game, week five. He's going to be back for that one. Yeah, and then all of a sudden, Rappaport, who has reported injury return times differently than what players or teams have said before in the past. True. He has said that a player was going to come back at a later point than the player thought he was going to be coming back, and the player actually tweeted publicly, oh, this guy knows, huh?
1:00:18Pat McAfee:I'm the actual guy. And it turned out Rapp was right. You know, so like I do wonder whenever I hear week six, week seven, raps hearing that from somebody that may be six with the Cowboys, isn't a guarantee return for Micah. Nonetheless, you go back to last season when Micah got hurt, your team was asked when Micah was playing, you guys are really good. So maybe getting Micah back is all you need to flip the switch. And on the other side, the Atlanta Falcons, absolutely unbelievable. Now there is a conversation needs to be had about where I'm at right now. And the toxic table at Boston Connor and at Ty Schmidt are certainly going to have to assist me and one half of the hammer.
1:00:54Pat McAfee:Cowboys AP town is here, but tone, it is my absolute honor to be live in Knoxville, Tennessee here. And right behind me is a bridge that I think they talk about tone. What is the name of this bridge that was built in 1930? I do believe, sir. That is the, uh, Henley street bridge. It's a 1 ,793 foot long, beautiful concrete bridge down there in knoxville tennessee yeah 1930 1931 was that when that was constructed now and there's going to be people going crazy because the potential sage that is blown behind me i'll have you know that is the building that's smoking weed okay that building right there if you could drop the lower thirds that thing is pounding weed if everybody would like to just go crazy that is what happens whenever you see smoke that is marijuana smoke coming right out of those pipes right there.
1:01:43Pat McAfee:So let's never, ever, ever forget that. But Knoxville, Tennessee is a beautiful host for not only a college football game, but anything. The weather is perfect. We're in store for a absolutely fantastic weekend of college ball and NFL football. College slate packed to the gills. I believe this is the most amount of ranked matchups in one conference since something, I don't know, it was said this morning in a production meeting. The SEC has ranked matchups all over the place. Boom, boom, boom, boom, boom. Big Ten obviously has some long-term repercussions games happening in Oregon, USC. Are you guys going to make it to the end or are you guys going to be booted out of the contention conversation very early?
1:02:19Pat McAfee:Iowa, Michigan. Iowa wins that game. That might be college game day implications in Iowa. That would be, Matt, Ty, could you fathom a return of college game day to Iowa? I know there's some people that, for some reason, when we announced Johnny Knoxville was the guest picker yesterday, which I am so pumped and thankful about, College Game Day social accounts Twitter as well Very kind of them to do that, thank you for doing that And then a bunch of people responded like I don't watch Game Day anymore I don't watch Game Day anymore Strictly because of me, they were saying Directly because of me And I understand, I've been with me a long time It's tough, okay, it is tough But also, like, there's a lot of people watching this thing So whenever I say, like, hey, Game Day could be coming to town There might be some people that are like Who cares if Game Day's coming to town and I appreciate you doing that.
1:03:11Pat McAfee:But game day going to Iowa, in my mind, would be something that I would look forward to as a massive life event, Ty. And honestly, Iowa beating Michigan, ranked matchup, Iowa continuing potentially to have just nine wins, eight wins, nine wins, eight wins. Now they have a wide receiver threat, multiple Americans on the offensive line in Michigan in an interesting time to be favored by five and a half. Ty, I mean, a lot on the line up there in the Big Ten. It's across the board, though. Implications everywhere. Yeah, and I think it's a time where, like, you know, I mean, obviously Ohio State loses to Texas, and I don't think anyone's really panicking.
1:03:45You know, AJ would be able to talk about that a little bit better. But it is kind of wide open. Like, we had the, you know, going into the season, it was like, hey, these four teams, you know, Oregon, Ohio State, Indiana, maybe Penn State, you know, and I guess USC was kind of up there. And then it was kind of that middle crust where it's like, hey, anything can happen. We'll see. Maybe these teams could get in. But at this point of the season, I think it is kind of wide open. And whoever wins that Iowa, you know, Michigan game, I don't want to say they're in like the driver's seat because they're not, but they put themselves in a position to – like the playoffs are a realistic shot.
1:04:19They really are. And you mentioned it, you know, if game day were to go to Iowa next week, man, I mean, it's just very rarely do they get like the national spotlight like that other than kind of, you know, hey, how does this team continue to win? They score 14 points a game. Their offense stinks. and somehow they continue to win and they're in New Year's Day bowls and stuff like that. But it really does feel different. And I don't know. We'll see. The Big Ten hasn't felt like it's kind of this much up for grabs in the last couple years because it has just been so evident that it's either Ohio State, Oregon, or Indiana, and it doesn't necessarily feel like that right now.
1:04:58Pat McAfee:Yeah, Con Man, it has been fun to obviously be baptized into the college football world through this college game day run that I've been incredibly lucky to be a part of. But college football is swinging a hot bat every single week. It feels like every Saturday magic is happening, and now we're getting into the meat of the schedule, Con, man.
1:05:14Nick Saban:Yeah, it's unbelievable. And Kamario Taylor, we just talked about it. It is always awesome to watch him play. That's another game where it's like, hey, you can kind of see him more so becoming more into that kind of mainstream front line of some big conversations, not just, hey, this guy's really good, maybe even a Heisman candidate. But I also am looking forward to Georgia-Oklahoma. There's some smash-mouth games on here. Iowa-Michigan kind of leading the way. But Georgia-Oklahoma would be that other one. Kirby Smart was basically having his D-linemen do practice drills, Oklahoma drills, during a game last week.
1:05:47Nick Saban:We talked about it yesterday. So now that they get Oklahoma coming between the hedges, coming down to the Georgia Bulldogs home, I'm looking forward to that one. Venables versus Kirby Smart, just a bunch of big hits, maybe even an under game. I know that gets Tony going, but I'm very excited for that one.
1:06:04Pat McAfee:Yeah, and Con Man, you talk about Athens, Georgia, which I think you were trying to pull there. You had between the hedges and then almost went for it. I think you should have pulled the trigger. What an incredible college football atmosphere. Nobody's talking about Georgia. Nobody's talking about Georgia. The only time a conversation came up was when Georgia, to your point, was doing one-on-ones on the sideline during commercial breaks because they didn't think that their D-line was getting enough reps against the shitty-ass team that they were playing. So, in their mind, I didn't say they're a shitty-ass team.
1:06:33Pat McAfee:This is just basically what was being said by the Georgia football team and Kirby Smart, which I absolutely love. They still do blood ball on Tuesdays, AJ. They still do one-on-ones during commercial breaks whenever they're winning. It's like nobody's really talked about Georgia. Nobody really. Why?
1:06:53Nick Saban:Why do you think that is, honestly?
1:06:54Pat McAfee:They don't do massive transfer portal NIL stuff. You know, whenever they get an SEC action, they normally look fantastic, but there's always one or two games that are going to decide whether or not they're going to be the number one team in the country or if they're going to be like 13 because they play in the SEC against who they play against. It's like Georgia, I mean, they're the waning SEC champs, right? Am I wrong? Back-to-back, yeah. Yeah, and nobody's talked about them. And I think it's because Kirby doesn't do the big headline NIL transfer stuff. He does a lot of development, I think. I think he's got a lot of his own guys in there.
1:07:26Pat McAfee:They play an old-school style of football, and it's like Georgia never gets the love. I'm excited to see them with an Oklahoma team that has certainly been reeling. Notre Dame, when do they play a team? Does that happen in Ever? Well, that's good. I know they have BYU and Miami and Louisville, I believe. It's either Louisville or SMU. Someone can correct me there. But they have three tough games there. They got a really, really tough one this week against Purdue. So we'll see. See, and the Notre Dame fans say we're the only ones that have an easy schedule. It's like, nope. Miami also allegedly.
1:08:00Pat McAfee:Penn State allegedly has an easy one. And then the Buckeyes. How do we feel about the Buckeyes after getting a loss out of the way? Is that the way we're viewing it, the Texas loss a couple weeks back?
1:08:09Nick Saban:I mean, yeah, I guess you kind of have to view it that way. If you're going to lose, they used to say it's always good to lose early in the season. Now I guess it doesn't really matter when you lose. You don't ever want to. But Texas is a good ball club. I mean, Ohio State has Illinois coming into town, and I definitely cannot sleep on them. Bealman has the boys going, and I think, you know, it's going to be another test for them. We'll see.
1:08:28Pat McAfee:Yeah, I think, you know, all these teams, like Oregon, I mean, they went 84-0 against Portland State. Was there – there was chatter about people upset about Oregon? There was newspapers writing that it was a cringy win for Oregon and stuff like that. Oh, the worst people on earth. We're playing – Not the worst actually on earth, but close, you know, because there's obviously real criminals. A lot of the newspapers were Pacific Northwest newspapers, so not a surprise there. I didn't mean to take a shot at the entire region there. That was on me. But you did. It kind of did, though. But, yeah, I understand what you're saying in that whole entire aspect.
1:09:04Pat McAfee:And, you know, sports media has gotten to what it has gotten, and there's obviously different strokes for different folks, but it seems like they all have the same opinion and mindset on a lot of stuff, which is why we potentially were offered the opportunity that we were offered here in the sports media space. But, yeah, like, I don't love whenever the winners are attacked. Yeah. You know? And it's probably because, you know, when you're a little kid, and, like, this is probably when a lot of these people participated in sports last. When you're a little kid and we're having, you know, oranges at halftime, everybody gets playing time.
1:09:40It's like, hey, let's not just completely demoralize these people
1:09:44Pat McAfee:to ruin their life here, you know, whenever you're kids. But when you get to D1 football, and whenever you're at college, you're playing past high school. Even in high school, whenever you're playing past the volunteer, we're trying to learn life lessons if we're good at sports. The winners chose to do everything that they had to do to win. So we should be celebrating that. We should be wondering what the hell is going on with Portland State. Now, they obviously have nowhere near the amount of talent. But they also turned down, I guess, the 10-minute running operation. I guess the head coach comes out and says, like, we need to take this how we take this.
1:10:19Pat McAfee:And I respect him. I definitely do respect him. But also, probably not as demoralizing if we do 10 minutes, you know, at the end. So I just, I hate that that's always kind of been a reaction from some parts of society. It's like the people who work their ass off to get in the position that they're in to become the absolute best that they can, execute it in a time in which they had to execute when we've seen this not happen in the past. They're the bad people. It's like, I don't, I don't think so. I think they're the good ones, I think. But to the other side, sucks. That absolutely sucks. Hope you don't give up on sports.
1:10:53Pat McAfee:Hope you don't give up on football. But you're adults now. All of you could vote. All of you could do these things. You play for Portland State. So, like, figure it out. Hopefully you play better. But, yeah, I didn't like the reaction to that whole thing. Now, let's talk about some news and some headlines around the rest of the sport. So, when the president comes to a stadium, I didn't know this. I'm just now learning this. Same. Steve Sarkeesian came out and said, you know, when the president comes, that cuts off some communications. All the radios are kind of cut out, I assume, so nobody could track or so they could kind of.
1:11:23Pat McAfee:I have no idea why exactly. I'm sure it's some security reason. But, you know, whenever Sarkeesian brings that up, then a lot of people go, well, what the hell is going on here? I think Kurt Signetti felt obligated to go ahead and also say, yes, it definitely happens. A lot of people are saying maybe Miami benefited from that or was unlucky because of the timing. and sign that he said, let me go ahead and put that to bed. We got screwed. We were the ones that got screwed because of this whole thing. Crazy that I'm just now learning about this, though, AJ. This does feel like a pretty large thing that happens out of nowhere to teams in massive games.
1:11:58Pat McAfee:I did not know this. I guess it makes sense once you're told it. But this does feel like a pretty big adjustment to just potentially happen. Like, hey, we need hand signals just in case the president needs to move from one side of the stadium all the way to the other side of the stadium. That's a long walk, so we don't know how long. It might be two drives, one drive. We're not 100 % sure. It might be two plays. It might be one play. I didn't know this was the case at all, AJ, and I don't think any of us did.
1:12:22Nick Saban:No, and I just – I know they also said there's no warning. They don't say, like, hey, in three minutes, you're both sidelines' headsets will go off. They said it just kind of happens. Do they even get a 20-second? Like, they give them 20 seconds and say, hey, all your communication is going to be going down. We don't know how long it will be down, but it's going to be down starting now. Like, what do you do? Are you in the middle of calling a play-in? You know, there's 25 seconds left on the play clock, and then all of a sudden nothing. You think your headset's messed up. You're yelling at the tech guys.
1:12:48Nick Saban:You know the poor dudes that are always replacing batteries in the guy's helmets and stuff. It always gets taken out on them. I didn't know. I guess how often do presidents attend games? And this is something I learned yesterday. I'd never heard of it ever happening.
1:13:01Pat McAfee:Yeah, I'd never heard of it. And obviously, sitting president coming to game, and President Trump isn't the only president that has come to college football games. And obviously, we as people that are in college football hope that future presidents feel very welcome and open to coming to college football and football, regardless of any type of political, whatever the case, sitting presidents coming to things are insane to think about. That is just obviously a crazy regular season game here at Tennessee. If this was to happen with any president, it would be a big deal. So this is a crazy thing to learn about, though, that these teams are basically told, hey, anytime for anything, you can lose it all.
1:13:43Pat McAfee:Hey, let's work on a couple hand signals. Oh, is this a big, important game? National championship. Yeah. What do you – so what do you – real me this, Kurt Signetti says. So this guy's got to take a dump. I got to – we don't hear anything? No, if he leaves sweet to go anywhere, that's when it is. and this comes whenever? They go, yeah. And then all of a sudden Miami has the ball. You're on defense. This thing cuts out, what, after the 15 seconds maybe? Nobody's giving a heads up. You see the other sideline. Crystal Ball is going, what? They might have had a plan in place for whenever. Hey, if the sound drops off or whatever, we can't talk.
1:14:19Pat McAfee:Immediate trick play. Malachi, Tony, end a round. Let's not let them communicate at all. Boom, beer off there. So shout out to Crystal Ball making the most of that particular situation. But that is crazy to think that that is a situation that happens in modern football where communication through the green dot is such a vital process. Can't wait to see how it all goes. A lot of people were mad he wasn't guest picker. Okay, because online people said he was going to be the guest picker, which is another thing that is just the world we're in now. People that have no clue about anything.
1:14:49Nick Saban:They thought President Trump was going to be the guest picker? We were hoping.
1:14:52Pat McAfee:I mean. That's a lot. That's a lot. That's a lot. No, like, and also think about just the logistics alone. Yeah. And where we're at, we're out on the field because the game's starting at noon. So it's like, that's a wide, the amount of things that they're cutting off radio signal whenever this guy moves in the building. And then there's some people are like, President Trump, it should be the picker. Well, you got a president, but why is he not doing it? It's like, first of all, okay, I see why you have your feelings. but could you imagine trying to figure that out? He's sitting on the field. Okay.
1:15:29Pat McAfee:101 ,915 people or something. Eighth largest building or eighth largest stadium, I guess, building you could say in the world. It's like, yeah, I think that's a lot. And then there was a lot of people that were like, well, how come other people weren't the guest picker? It's like a lot of requests go out, you know, and it's not the easiest to get on everybody's schedule. We are very grateful that Johnny Knoxville is going to be here. His last name is Knoxville. Yeah, exactly. from here, born here, obviously we've seen him as a Tennessee fan through jackass over the years, but it's like, I appreciate that we're at the point now.
1:16:01Pat McAfee:And I guess game day has always been like this where people get upset about who isn't the guest picker. And it's like, if all those people could just book the guest picker for us, that'd be cool. You know, like, Hey, if you could do that and figure out how that'll all work. Thank you. That'd be amazing. So Johnny Knoxville finding out about this. All the guest pickers find out about this three, four days in advance. It's like, they're celebrity guest pickers probably because they work. They're celebrities. Weekends are a pretty good time for a lot of celebrities to have gigs and stuff. I'm not saying he's gigging right now, but it's not as easy to get people to these games as we would hope and as everybody would hope.
1:16:42Pat McAfee:We'd be honored to have anybody to be able to join us for the guest picking segment. Him doing it is gigantic. Now, on that note, if he's moving, the president that is, if he's moving into the stadium while we're doing the –
1:16:55Nick Saban:Oh, yeah. Do you – they cut your guys? Oh, wow. You guys better get a contingency plan today. I don't know. I'm starting to wonder that. I guess maybe like phone call is the right answer.
1:17:08Pat McAfee:Like how do we fix that one? Honestly, I don't know how – so we're just going to get shut off maybe? Who did you look at when you asked that? Was that Gump City? I don't know if Gumpy knows.
1:17:20Nick Saban:If I saw Gump sitting at that thing, he can handle this. Yeah, it'll all be figured out. We'll be ready. We're prepared.
1:17:26Pat McAfee:I'm sure the ESPN Ops team, who I've heard a lot of people love, is certainly going to be pumped up about what Gumpy just said about saying, we'll be able to handle that, because I'm sure there's some real panic happening around a lot of people. Let's go through some storylines that are developing. Let's go to the Pittsburgh Steelers. Joey Porter Jr. says, deal didn't get done. Didn't happen. That's really just old news for me now. Definitely sees himself playing at some point. Tone, what did that mean whenever he said at some point? Is that sooner than later? Probably not sooner because some point doesn't sound like as soon as possible.
1:17:59Pat McAfee:How'd you take that? And are you pumped that this is where the situation is, Tone? Yeah, it feels like it's finally going in the right direction. As we know, the Steelers don't negotiate during the season. So this was kind of the expected outcome as far as where the contract is concerned. and I'm glad that it's passed. And Joey seems like he's passed that as well. Playing at some point, he ramped up last – or he started ramping up when the season started as far as practice and stuff because he missed all of camp. He ramped up last week. He was doing more and more. The back flared up again last week.
1:18:30He left practice with a trainer. Now he returned to practice again this week. He's been fine. He's been doing more every single practice. So I believe it's kind of just a when he feels right type of just regular injury situation. now on when he will be back. Hopefully it's this week. If not, hopefully soon. He says at some point.
1:18:48Nick Saban:Doesn't that give you pause that he's not going to be playing this week? No. This week, sorry. I thought you meant like this season. He says at some point. To me, I would take that as not this week.
1:18:59Pat McAfee:Not next week maybe either. They say like two is a couple. Three is a few. Right? Do you kind of have that? At some point, feels like more than two weeks. Like this week, next week, some point. That feels like a descriptor of like multiple weeks down the road, but we don't know. It might be just dependent upon when he gets back into full shape. Obviously, George Kittle has announced Kyle Juszczyk's nickname is now beer. Okay, instead of juice. I like that. Ty, sounds like you enjoyed that as well. Yeah, that's good. That's really good. And, you know, I saw the – I think it was either a meme or a Photoshop of Juice sitting in the hot tub after practice with a tall boy of Bud Light in his hands.
1:19:47This is kind of crazy, though, that he has to deal with this and kind of just bullshit. So I hope the NFL eventually kind of rescinds this fine because his nickname is Juice. I mean, what are we doing here?
1:19:59Pat McAfee:Yeah, and I guess – how many different ways are there to inject Juice? I guess he could do a... Yeah, you're right.
1:20:07Nick Saban:And I don't think they'd like that one. Well, he could have put a little straw in a juice box. I guess they're probably saying that could be an option.
1:20:14Pat McAfee:Oh, like a Capri Sun where he's trying to...
1:20:16Nick Saban:Yeah, he's got to try to jam in there for 10 seconds and the camera pans off. Like bone drinks every day.
1:20:20Pat McAfee:Yeah, it is like the bone Capri Sun or whatever the case is. Now he has not beer up there over his shoulder. He will obviously be appealing this. A$14 ,000 fine to Kyle Juszczyk is obviously not nothing, but it's certainly something that he is okay with paying, I think, for all of this bullshit conversation that's happening around how are these actual penalties and fines in 2026 with all of the stuff that we see on a regular basis. And Indianapolis Colt got fined too. I don't know if you heard. What? I didn't even know we had beer drinkers on our team. I would like to appeal for our team. I don't think these guys would drink beers.
1:20:56Pat McAfee:I'm not 100 % sure. Colts guard Matt Gonzalves also is fined. $8 ,847 for engaging Sunday night in what the NFL called an offensive demonstration. Your imitation of chugging a beer could sell in an offensive demonstration in Portes. Is Walt Anderson deciding what's an offensive demonstration? Like, who's deciding an offensive demonstration? Legitimately, who is the one on that? Is that because who's the guy that does John Runyon?
1:21:29Nick Saban:I believe he does. Yeah, like who does? Who flags these things? Who saw Jamar doing the people's elbow? And somebody in the NFL office had to be like, was he talking about a penis? What is that? What's going on? Because they're bad people. Yeah, that's what I'm saying. And then Jamar said, get your head out of the gutter, man. What are you talking about? This is a people's elbow.
1:21:47Pat McAfee:And then Kyle Juszczyk comes over, drinks a juice, and somebody at the NFL, some booze bag at the NFL is like, that looks like a beer to me. It's like, that sounds like you're putting your problems on other people here, pal, you alcoholic booze bag. Sounds like you need to maybe go get checked out. And it's okay if you do. Have a lot of friends that need to do that. Sounds like there's some people at the NFL offices that got some real, either head in the gutter or real bad booze problems. If every single time a drink is drank, you think it's booze, you probably have a problem. I think that is probably a problem.
1:22:22Pat McAfee:So maybe the entire NFL office needs to go into the substance of abuse program, get tested eight times a month, get tracked everywhere that they head, because they can't even see somebody drinking a water in me. Could you imagine? Hey, let me get in double dine this water here. Trying to get hydrated. You know what I mean? Immediately, whoever the booze bag is at the end of the office. That's a nice cold beer. Was that a beer bong? I think it was a beer bong. I think it was a beer bong. And then I strap up. You know what I mean? And maybe a guy scores a touchdown. He straps up his helmet. And then he lights something out here.
1:22:52Pat McAfee:And then he's doing that. And somebody at the end of the office is going to go, that's a gas mask. He's smoking marijuana right there. It's like, who says? Who says? What if he's burning some nice little tobacco? What if he's just smoking tobacco in that gas mask? What if he's drinking non-alcoholic beer? What if there actually being a demonstration for those who are so addicted to the taste of beer? Which I am worried about you guys. If you people just love the taste of beer so bad that you have to have non-alcoholic beer. But I like that there's an option for you. Anybody that can write their life And say that they don't want to do something anymore We certainly are fans of But what if that's non-alcoholic beer And they're actually promoting being on the other side of recovery We don't know that, the NFL doesn't know that But the booze bags that are making decisions are saying That's offensive Think about saying that Offensive It's almost like whenever you point at a camera And say you need to apologize You You need to apologize Josh, you know, people do that.
1:23:57Pat McAfee:That seems like it's an offensive. You're offensive. It's super offensive.
1:24:02Nick Saban:You think Juice Check gets, you think, he'll appeal it, but I don't think he'll get it all back. They may cut it in half. I know they'll do that in the past.
1:24:09Pat McAfee:Yeah, it's just a mockery. NFL, you're doing good. Just get out of your own way. This is disgusting. This is stupid. I don't think. Now, granted, if guys are pulling out guns.
1:24:18Nick Saban:Yeah, has anyone tried the bow and arrow yet? We were trying to come up with ways that we could get around the weapons thing. Like, what other kind of weapons could you use? Yeah, ninja stars. Grenade. Can you throw a grenade? Ja did a grenade, but it didn't really play.
1:24:31Pat McAfee:Yeah, but it wasn't the NFL. Ja did a grenade. It did play. What are we talking about? I thought they fined him for it.
1:24:38Nick Saban:No, did they? Yeah, because he stopped doing it. That's what I thought. I might be misremembering. I'll look it up.
1:24:43Pat McAfee:I thought he got around the gun pretty good there, and we were happy for Ja once again. Yeah. Because Ja had that thing going where anytime he did anything, it was like, where's the gun? He had to. And he got moved on from that. we are very thankful that he did the grenade. Yeah, I mean, it was splash. He was not fined for the grenade. There we go. Grenade after that. Pretty sweet, actually. That was good. And by the way, maybe that wasn't a grenade either. We're kind of projecting that onto him because of our own experiences, which is kind of what the NFL was doing, which we don't like at all.
1:25:11Pat McAfee:Dan Jones talking about his new wide receiver, Darius Slayton, says, obviously I'm familiar with the guy. Played with him at the Giants. He's going to come in and right the ship, right, AJ?
1:25:19Nick Saban:Yep. Sounds good, right? We're all good. No worries in Indy.
1:25:23Pat McAfee:I agree. I'm on your side here. Did you see the stat with them? What's that? With Dan Jones and Shane Steichen. I believe it's the highest scoring coach quarterback combo through their first 10 games together of all time. So, you know, that's something to look at. That's good, right? Yeah, and that was Tone Diggs talking there. You didn't see him, but he was. Yeah, here he is. My bad. Bruce, by the way, Bruce is doing a great job. I was digging for it. That may be Bruce. Bruce, you did a great job. You're doing a great job right now, Bruce. I was proud of you two days in a row, really working it.
1:25:53Pat McAfee:Obviously, Foxy and family, hell yeah, we love you guys. But I think the Indianapolis Colts might be in trouble this weekend against the Houston Texans, but we'll only find out here in a matter of moments who I'm taking and who I actually believe in. AJ, if you could kind of take the floor for about 35 seconds, an icon, a 1980s professional wrestler in real time for the sake of ball, has walked into the area, and we need to strap him up right now.
1:26:19Nick Saban:I will, yeah, no problem. Ty Schmidt, obviously you're Iowa Hawkeyes this weekend. Big win for you. What do you think happens, for real? Like, what are your true thoughts? We know Green Bay lost last night. Obviously, that sucks. What about Iowa this weekend? I feel pretty good, honestly. I think – This would be like a program – I guess not like – I wouldn't – They've had big victories, but this would springboard them through the rest of the year. I think it just means that you can start realistically looking like, hey, if they can – because this was the gauntlet for them. It's Michigan, then they have Ohio State at home, than they go to Washington on a Friday night.
1:26:49And it was if you could go 2-1 in those games, there is a chance that you could make the playoffs. So, I mean, you can't turn the ball over. The quarterback play isn't going to be great. This is his first true road test. So they're going to have to win 14-10, 17-14, something like that. But that's Iowa football. They're very accustomed to doing that. So, yeah, I feel pretty good.
1:27:10Nick Saban:All right. We've got another guy with Pat right now. Who you got over there, Pat? I can't really tell who it is.
1:27:15Pat McAfee:Ladies and gentlemen, Stanford State.
1:27:19Nick Saban:Looking good, Steve-O.
1:27:21Pat McAfee:AJ definitely knew what we were doing, so he was deciding to go right back to Iowa. I want to drive it home. I want to drive the Iowa game home. I really want it to. Yeah, me too. I would like to drive the Iowa-Michigan game home as well because Big Ten football is really getting nitty-gritty. Too much SEC, you know that.
1:27:36Nick Saban:I had to get some Big Ten in there.
1:27:37Pat McAfee:I mean, a man that loves nitty-gritty football, Stanford, Steve, is here. How you doing, pal? I like the Buccaneers hat. Nobody's really wearing that right now. No, and they're not playing well either. So I'm trying to give them a little juice. That's what I'm saying. That's why nobody's wearing it. Yeah. You're saying, hey, even in the bad times. Always. Your guy, Stanford Steve, is here for you. Gotcha. I like that. How do you feel about Knoxville? Pretty beautiful place. Yeah, this is pretty sweet. This stadium rocks. You talked about speakers on the sidelines having trouble hearing sometimes.
1:28:04Yeah. Wait till tomorrow. Yeah. Because those things pump.
1:28:07Pat McAfee:I like that. Anytime speakers are pumping at a place, especially in front of 101 ,915 people, which this place will be packed to the gills tomorrow with perfect weather. We are assuming and hoping for, as long as we don't have a pregame show or a halftime show that are two feet away from those speakers, I think everything will be a-okay. But we're excited to get there. We learned about the headsets dropping off whenever the president moves around the stadium. I think that's all new information to us. That is a nice little added element here of the game that we can see maybe between Hypo and Sark trying to joust with each other.
1:28:38Speaking of headsets, did Coach Saban have this one on before?
1:28:40Pat McAfee:Yeah. I can tell. Loud? Oh, my God. It's so loud. It's so loud. Let me turn it down. I'm trying to keep my bearings, and you're talking about how you have to on the field. There we go. I'm proud of Ty today showing up. I thought he used a sick day or something today. No, Ty will face the music. And Ty actually said he wasn't going to overreact. He said he kind of had a level-headed reaction and quit on the team, basically. What time did he get to FaceTime from you? No, there was certainly a text last night. Yeah, I mean, I thought Ty's got a lot of kids now. Ty's got a lot of life going on. Obviously, Iowa's in the middle of a run that they always are in, but really this time have a chance to really go.
1:29:20Pat McAfee:If the Green Bay Packers lose to the worst team in ball on a Thursday night, you know, that – You can't let it set the tone for the weekend. I like how he's bouncing back. Right, Ty? Not even for the weekend. For the rest of the season, he's kind of just giving up emotional energy to it. Right, Ty? Yeah, until they start playing better. Again, I mean, they can't fucking block anyone, so why would I go into any games expecting them to win, you know? And it's like, so we, all of my emotional investment is on Hank Brown's shoulders right now. And Tony Diaz's shoulders, you know? So, yeah, we're looking ahead to Saturday.
1:29:49We're looking ahead to Saturday.
1:29:51Pat McAfee:Go on, Hank Brown. I thought we were what the hecking, right? Wasn't that what we were doing? Early on, early on. Yeah, I was looking to raise a little heck, but, you know, and then the season unfolds and you said, God damn, we got a star in the making. And Hank Brown, 70 % completion percentage so far through this season, 100 % completion percentage last week. So, yeah, it's Hank Brown's team. Okay, you remember Heklinski? He was going to be the guy? Yeah. And we were going to have a heck of a time this season with the Heklins. You remember this? You don't remember this. We were having a heck of a time this summer because Ty thought they were going to play football because they had Tony Diaz, is it, as the wide receiver.
1:30:26Pat McAfee:Now all of a sudden it's back to Hank Brown, a guy that he wished away. AJ, I don't think I know or remember. Hank Brown, Ty Schmidt wished moved, right, Fiji? That was last season.
1:30:36Nick Saban:Yeah, where'd you want him? A different continent, I think. You wanted him. You wished him to go. Yeah, probably.
1:30:41Pat McAfee:Yeah, that was last year, though. He's grown on you. Hank Brown has grown on you, Ty Schmidt? Yeah, you know, Mark Gronoski got hurt during the last drive against Indiana when Iowa could have went and beat them, and Hank Brown got kind of thrust in there. And I think he took like three sacks. They were at like the plus 40. Could have easily won that game. And I just said, this kid just doesn't have it. Go back to Auburn. Go back to the SEC. And then I started to see him kind of, you know, starting to love Iowa City a little bit. He's getting in there with Tom Moore at 2 a.m. every single morning and kind of just rifling through the tape.
1:31:20I believe he already graduated, so he's got a lot of time on his hands to spend at the facility. Spend with Tim Lester. And he's really impressed me through three weeks here. So, yeah, you know, call me crazy. I'm a Hank Bryant guy.
1:31:33Pat McAfee:Okay, let's remember that clip. Subject to change, obviously. Subject to change. Don't clip that. Let's keep that for ourselves, let alone the internet. Let's go to the week three NFL slate and make some picks here, shall we? AJ's been seeing the board very well. Last night doesn't count for any of us. We just kind of move along. Congrats to the Falcons. Congrats to the Falcons. Again.
1:31:57Nick Saban:Congrats to the Falcons. 35.
1:31:59Pat McAfee:Yeah, it was an ass beating. A drumming. They might be the best team in ball. Okay, I'm not going to do such an action. but I did kind of feel it last night. That's a damn good football team, Ty. Maybe you shouldn't give up on the Packers. Seattle Seahawks taking on the Washington Commanders. We got Marcus Mariota, I believe, playing quarterback for the Washington Commanders. Seahawks favored by 7.5 on the other side of the country. Over under 40.5, maybe a cagey affair. Sam Darnold was jogging on the field just yesterday or two days ago at practice. I don't know what that means for whether or not he's the guy or not the guy.
1:32:28Pat McAfee:I like the Seattle Seahawks just because I like the Seattle Seahawks. Give me that minus 7.5. Steve, how do you see it? I think it's a dead-under game. I think it's going to be tough in the trenches. Washington, looking at the schedule before the year, I saw 0-3, but I think they've got enough fight here to cover this. I think the hook is big here. I'll take the 7-1. This is one of the two games this weekend that could be impacted by the Nor 'easter going on right now up in that region. This one and then the Giants and Titans one as well. Can somebody explain to me what Nor 'easter means? It's basically a hurricane, but in the Northeast.
1:33:01So we're bringing rain and storm? Rain and wind, yeah.
1:33:04Pat McAfee:Okay, so under is what you're talking about. Now, the Seattle Seahawks, Sam Darnold, Adam Schefter reporting, he's on good track to play Sunday against Washington after missing most of the first two games with a glute injury. You remember, thought it was a hip. It was actually just the ass. One glute. Not the maximum. No. It was the gluteus medius, potentially. Which you got pretty good little gluteus medius. Show us where that is, Steve, bro. We're all good. Right here, just like Pat was talking about what each check was going to do. Possibly. What? Possibly. Everybody's got these intentions.
1:33:37Pat McAfee:Possibly. Okay, so you've got the Commanders plus seven and a half at home in a potential nor 'easter game. AJ, who do you like? How do you like it? You know what?
1:33:43Nick Saban:I like the Seattle Seahawks here on the road, minus seven and a half. I think it's a lot of points, but like I said, Sam Darnell comes back. Here we go.
1:33:50Pat McAfee:AJ has been very good at this over the last two weeks. Let's see if that continues. Last night, not so much, but he had to pick the Packers. Chargers, Bills. Bill is favored by seven. Chargers potentially. worst team in ball right now after the Atlanta Falcons did what they did last night. Buffalo Bills, Josh Allen, outrageous. Can their defense stop this McDaniel-Herbert ineptitude seemingly thus far offense? Steve, how do you see it in the new Highmark Stadium? One team has looked as good as you can on offense. The other team has looked as bad as you can. It's the NFL. I'll take the seven with the Chargers.
1:34:22Pat McAfee:Okay, so you don't think the Buffalo Bills will be able to stop this McDaniel-Herbert offense that has been fluttering out of the gates, to say the least? consistency. Gotta have it, especially on the road. AJ, who do you like? How do you like?
1:34:33Nick Saban:I like the Buffalo Beals at home minus seven.
1:34:37Pat McAfee:Yeah, me too. I'll roll with it. It seems like we know what Steve's doing and what we're doing, but we're only two games into this. Kansas City Chiefs favored by ten and a half. Speaking. Down in South Florida. Stanford Steve likes the Dolphins plus ten and a half down in the humidity of South Florida with Malik Willis and Halfley keeping it close at least. September heat down there, making the Chiefs wear the dark jerseys. This line's gone down, so that tells me people are taking the Dolphins? Stop it, dude. You did this last week. It's not worth it. Don't do it. They're back home. Mahomes never covers.
1:35:10He'll cover this one. Don't worry. We'll see.
1:35:12Pat McAfee:Yeah, Mahomes is money line Mahomes. I've rode that particular I've tailed Mahomes into a tailspin of responsible gambling dying because they never cover for like the last four years. Win games but don't cover. They certainly say that. Ten and a half, Miami after a close one against the Indianapolis Colts. I'll take Kansas City Chiefs minus ten. Mahomes is never covered as a double-digit favorite on the road. Okay, Gump. There we go. I'm just giving you info. I wouldn't take it. I'm just giving you the info.
1:35:46Nick Saban:AJ, who do you like? How do you like it? Well, with Gump presenting me that information right before my pick, it's still not going to sway me, so I'm going to take Kansas City minus ten and a half.
1:35:55Pat McAfee:I like that, AJ. Maybe we go perfect for the weekend together, and Steve's completely wrong. Jets, Detroit Lions, over under 48.5. Feels like a big number. Lions favored by 6.5. Aaron Glenn's big return, obviously, to all the Lions fans. We are sending hellos to the Jets fans. We're saying, is this another year of being the Jets? Stanford, Steve, who do you like? How do you like it? Blew that one last week. A little clock management going on. Not sure what happened there. Lions win, Jets cover. Okay, Jets plus six and a half. I like what you're doing. I see what you're doing, Stanford Steve. AJ, who do you like?
1:36:30Pat McAfee:How do you like it?
1:36:30Nick Saban:I'm going to have to ride with Stanford Steve on this one. Give me the Jets plus six and a half.
1:36:35Pat McAfee:Jeez Louise, can you send me over to the Talks to Table Con, man? Are you thinking about the Lions? Is anybody thinking about the Lions right now?
1:36:41Nick Saban:No, not really, especially because of the Bills' primetime game. This feels like a big Lions beat an absolute piss out of the Jets, especially because depending on what we saw yesterday, the Packers beat the Jets in overtime, and then the Packers last night looked like absolute dog shit. I don't know the correlation, but I feel comfortable taking the Lions minus 13.5 here.
1:37:02Pat McAfee:Okay, that is all line, all line, and I think obviously our Lions friends will be excited about that. AJ, you got the Jets plus 6.5, you say?
1:37:10Nick Saban:I do, but you know what? Con man just swayed me. Give me the Lions minus 6.5. Okay, all right.
1:37:15Pat McAfee:Me and AJ is still on the same page. I like that you don't get peer pressured at all, Stanford, Steve. Try not to. You're standing right in the fire. See the board. with the dogs. And I think you're seeing it well. He won 3-0 last week on game day. Nobody's going to talk about it, but we should celebrate that. Congratulations. Steve. Not easy. Might want to clip that last week because it might not happen again. No. I'm sure it will. Love it. We're going to keep trying. With a hat like that? Wait, come on, other guy. Hey, look at that guy. Back to back. Hey, Bruce, can you go full screen here? Look at that man.
1:37:46Pat McAfee:Come on. Hey, baby, Steve. Look at that man. Get some juice of the guys in the Thunderdome. Yeah. Appreciate it. Look at that. Look at that. That green sickle's clean. Are you doing that yourself? Look at that guy. Yeah, well, it's not great. Keep it right there. That looks good. Look at that man. Say, I am strong.
1:38:05Nick Saban:Would you repeat it, Steve? I believe. I am smart. I believe. I am a real American.
1:38:14Pat McAfee:Jeez, we need a little bit more confidence there. You go 3-0, ride the lightning, brother. All right. You've gone against every single pick me and AJ have done. Ride the lightning, brother. I don't need you self-handicapping. I don't need you saying, well, I won 3-0 last week, so that means I can technically go 1-2 this week, and I'm still 4-2, which is above 50 % win streak, so everybody can kind of eat shit. We need another 3-0. That's what I want. Is it? The problem is you've got to narrow it down to 3. That is a lot. Too many winners. A lot of double-digit dogs. Okay, I like that. Maybe do 10 bets.
1:38:47We don't have that time in the show.
1:38:49Pat McAfee:Oh, we can find it. We can certainly find it, especially if they're all winners. Panthers, Browns. I believe Todd Munkin is going to be joining us here in about 20 minutes or so. Fresh out of practice. Love Coach Munkin. Yeah, cannot wait to talk to him. Love the way he has operated since the day he got out. Granted, obviously Georgia and Baltimore and his entire history, great. But the day he got into the Cleveland Browns building wearing oversized jeans and an oversized button-down, holding a styrofoam coffee cup where everybody else had a parade when they walked into the building. and there's people in the back that didn't even know he was the head coach, I love the way he said, hey, we've got to change culture.
1:39:25Pat McAfee:We've got to go to work. This ain't the Browns anymore. And then he's out there doing it with the fans afterwards, dropping great words that there are some people out there that get really offended by even though they're adults and words shouldn't affect how they actually feel. But nonetheless, Todd Monk, an absolute legend. Cannot wait to talk to him. Yeah, not afraid to put on a 3X sweatshirt and 3X sweatpants and just chill, like you said. And also, he'll shot put a high five through the fans' hands. He's getting two and a half at home against Carolina Panthers, who are a great football team.
1:39:51Pat McAfee:Town, any stats or nuggets we need to know about this particular game with an over-under 42 and a half? Yeah, 88 % is on Carolina. People are seeing what Bryce Young is doing, and they're not buying what the Browns are doing yet. Even as the Browns being home puppies with that makes me want to go a certain way.
1:40:07Nick Saban:Yeah, bad news also, just injury-wise, Devin Lloyd, player of the week on defense of the NFC. He's out on Sunday.
1:40:15Pat McAfee:Okay, Devin Lloyd out. Utah U. Really? Okay, I like that. Great state, great university. They got a big one coming up. Utah, obviously. Who do you like, Stanford Steve? I'm going to take the home dog. Browns. AJ?
1:40:28Nick Saban:I'm going with the other guy. Give me the home dogs as well.
1:40:32Pat McAfee:You sure?
1:40:33Nick Saban:I'm absolutely sure.
1:40:35Pat McAfee:And listen, I'll take the Browns as well. Okay. Todd Monk is coming on the show. People have success normally after they come on the show unless they don't, then we're called a curse. We're not a curse. We have winners that have stopped by. We've had losers come by, too. And I'm not saying, like, the humans themselves are losers, but they come by the show, perform the worst they've ever performed. I start to wonder if we're a curse. Then somebody comes on the show, wins back-to-back MVPs, and I think to myself, you know what? Maybe not. You know what I mean? Yeah, I know exactly what you're talking about.
1:41:08Pat McAfee:Yeah, you do, actually. You and Scott probably have a pretty good show. Yeah, we all don't worry about it. It's good to be a post-game show because then you just have the winner. That is a lot of fun. It's hard to live in that world where it's like, man, maybe we are the problem for some people. And then we get a winner and we're like, thank God. So we've got Munkin rolling. Let's stay in the AFC North. Bengals in Pittsburgh. Tone Diggs, Joey Poorer Jr. Some point going to be playing. Joey Burrow, Jamar Chase, T. Higgins flying around, dropping people's elbows on people, dropping balls all over the place.
1:41:39Pat McAfee:Sexy Dexys got the defense rolling. Are you a little bit worried? Does the Bengals come to Akershires, three-and-a-half-point favorites? Yeah, a little bit worried. By the way, I went back last night and watched a bunch of The Rock, one of the most entertaining men of all time. That looks nothing like the people's elbows, so I'm not buying their bullshit over there. Sexy Dexy's been unbelievable, and the offensive line for the Steelers not been unbelievable. There could be some changes up front. So, yeah, I'm a bit worried. You could say that. Okay. I think a lot of answers are, Steve, you're taking the Bengals in Akershire.
1:42:12I will say Bill Carr is at practice today. So this line stinks.
1:42:16Pat McAfee:What do you mean? It stinks. The Bengals have looked as good as any team in the AFC. The Steelers are not looking too hot. Only three and a half. I'll take the three and a half of the Steelers. To Tone's point there that might have got swallowed. Bill Cowher is currently in the building alongside Mike McCarthy. Oh, no. That fire alarm. Yeah, because everything's potentially heating up with our NFL slate picks. Yeah. That was just a sign of us being hot. The coach getting off the elevator. That was a sign of us being on. That's what that is. Oh, okay. That's what it is. I wonder if he knows that the entire place screams whenever he, you know, the building even makes some noise whenever he gets here.
1:42:53Pat McAfee:Can't wait to catch up with Coach Heupel here in a matter of moments. I will also take the Cleveland Browns. Let's go Bengals-Steelers. You've got the Steelers at home. AJ, who do you like?
1:43:02Nick Saban:I like the Bengals minus three and a half here.
1:43:05Pat McAfee:Hmm. Okay.
1:43:07Nick Saban:Dropping the people's elbow again multiple times.
1:43:10Pat McAfee:No, I don't think it's pretty expensive. I think the people's elbow pretty pretty expensive. I don't know if you guys are doing that. It's not accurate at all uh, I would take the um I'll take the Pittsburgh Steelers Bill Kyrzner, you know, yeah Bill Kyrz plus three and a half Mike McCarthy plus three and a half Patriots Jags Jags favored by three at home Nobody talking about the Duval boys in the new England Patriots Everybody's questioning whether or not Drake may still a guy con man You have questions about Drake may like everybody else does right now.
1:43:38Nick Saban:Uh, no, absolutely not The Seattle Seahawks have the best defense in the NFL, and the Pittsburgh Steelers aren't too far behind them. I really, really like the plus three in New England this weekend.
1:43:48Pat McAfee:Okay, so you're pumped up about the Patriots potentially rolling. Okay, here we go. AJ, who do you like? How do you like it, pal? You know what?
1:43:56Nick Saban:I like this Jags team at home, minus three, even though they're favorites. Give me the Jags. Shut up.
1:44:02Pat McAfee:I knew that was coming. I like what you're doing there, especially with how Jacksonville has been playing. Liam Cohen, we're all big fans of. We're also big fans of Big Mike. Stanford, Steve, who do you like? How do you like it? Really like the Jacks. Give me the Jacks. Wow. Cruel and unusual punishment type stuff happening down here in the suite in which we're in where they're just making the most annoying sound in the world as if you were to try to interrogate a terrorist. You would probably run this sound through their ears if you were to do that. It's happening up here. Don't like that it's taking place because we have actual Tennessee royalty here right now.
1:44:37Pat McAfee:We'll be catching up with you in about two minutes. I will take the New England Patriots plus three. The Houston Texans at Indianapolis. I like the Jags. I like the Jags.
1:44:48Nick Saban:I think Vrabel's undefeated as a three-plus dog or something like that against the spread-wise.
1:44:57Pat McAfee:Okay, and I like that. And I would like to know, how much nicotine is that guy pummeling into his mouth still? Has he backed off of that alongside everyone? I just would like to know. I don't think so. Maybe that's what the problem is with Drake May right now. Maybe Drake May is a little bit conservative because his coach doesn't have eight, nine zins in his mouth alongside some Copenheathens. Okay, so let's just make sure we're all doing football the same way we thought we were going to do after a long offseason. Houston Texans favored by a point and a half in the Loud House. Give me the Colts, obviously.
1:45:25Pat McAfee:You know, plus one and a half, certainly nice because maybe the Texans steal one, but this is obviously a Colts minus ten line is what this is supposed to be, Stanford. There's a lot of good on that tape for the Colts. I know they lost Sunday night. A lot of good, though. Give me the Colts. A lot of good.
1:45:39Nick Saban:Okay. All right, Stanford. Yeah, give me the Texans. There is a lot of good on there for the Colts, though. But I'm taking the Texans.
1:45:47Pat McAfee:Titans, Giants, as we wrap this up. Giants favored by two and a half with Jameis Winston at home. Stanford, Steve, who do you like? Weather could be an option, as Tone pointed out. I'm going to take Cam Ward. Okay, you got Cam Ward in the weather. The all-whites are sweet, too. Clean uniforms. A.J., who do you like?
1:46:04Nick Saban:I like the Titans as well here.
1:46:05Pat McAfee:I'll take the Giants minus 2.5 with that weather. It feels like they've got a lot of big bodies. Let's hand that thing off. Cardinals, San Francisco 49ers. 49ers, Juszczyk, a little light in the pocket because he's drinking juice, obviously. Favored by 8.5 at home. Arizona Cardinals, give me them, plus 8.5 up there in Santa Clara. Who do you like? I agree. I like the Cardinals' weapons. Okay. A.J.? Give me the Cardinals' too. Vikings, Bucs. Vikings favored by one and a half. Down there in Tampa, you got the Bucs hat on. I assume you like them? I see the hat. Flores is about to be dancing around in Baker's head, potentially.
1:46:41Nick Saban:AJ, who do you like? I see the hat. Give me the Tampa Bay Bucs as well.
1:46:45Pat McAfee:Okay. The hat does look good on the head of the otter guy here. But I will take the Minnesota Vikings, minus one and a half. Raiders, Saints. Saints favored by three at home. I like the Saints a lot. I think it's a close game. I like the Raiders. plus three down there in New Orleans. I don't. I like the Saints. Come on. Hey, Jay. Tough place to play. Give me the Saints. I'll take the Saints as well. You know what? You guys just talk me out of it. Let's go to Brazil. Ravens, Cowboys, Baltimore favored by three and a half. Donner and Rio. Shout to Stephen A. being Donner. Okay, I think he's been out there the last couple days.
1:47:20You go right from L.A.? I think so.
1:47:22Pat McAfee:Hey, way to go, dude. Thank you for traveling. I think it's a nine-hour, ten-hour flight down there, and he's just hanging out in the stadium, I think. So shout out to him going and showing face for all of ESPN, seeing ESPN Brazil. Looks like the weather's great. The field is obviously the big question. Over, under, 53 and a half. I think I like the under. Do you like the Ravens or the Cowboys? Cowboys plus points. Okay, AJ?
1:47:43Nick Saban:I like the Cowboys too.
1:47:45Pat McAfee:Give me the Ravens minus three and a half just because of what I saw week one out of the Baltimore Ravens. And then Sunday night football. Obviously, as we wrap it up, Rams taking on the Broncos. Rams are only playing a 16-game season. and as they said, that Australia was nothing. Let's move forward. Favored by two and a half at mile high. Who do you like, Steve? Denver. AJ. LA Rams. I'll take the Rams as well. And that is the entire Sunday slate with Stanford. Steve. AJ, take it for all or two. Please. Way to go, Steve. Good luck, boys.
1:48:17Nick Saban:Conman, Conman. You think the LA Rams are going to continue on this path and win this one? Hogger, I'm not sure. No Puka? When is Puka coming back? I don't know. Good question. What's happening? So Pat said he saw him when he was down there, boots on the ground, like running around in warm-ups. He said he looked pretty good. Yeah. What's the latest on the injury report? Because we talked about how yesterday it could be. Oh, I'm sorry. No, no, no. Sorry. What do they say? He hasn't practiced that is what I meant by out. Doubtful? What do they have to say? Probably today they got to list him as doubtful.
1:48:43Nick Saban:I mean, I don't know. Probably one of those things where, hey, let's kind of slow roll this. We want to be where we want to be in December and January. We don't really need to rush Puka out there, especially coming off the Vontae having 195 yards and two touchdowns. Okay. Perfect. Pat, what do you got going on back there? I see you have coaching royalty with you up in your suite, I believe.
1:49:02Pat McAfee:Ladies and gentlemen, the head coach of the volunteer football team, Josh Hyde. Hey, Coach. Appreciate you so much. Appreciate you having me on. I want to let you know, last year when you stopped by the program, you're one of the lads' favorites. Yes, you need to know that. Appreciate it, boys. Because I don't think you necessarily love doing media all the time or talking and chit-chatting. So the fact that you come by here and are so kind to us, we're very grateful. Now, on that note, you got a guy, huh, freshman? Let's go. Yeah. Hey, because there was a conversation in training camp. You're going to go with a little bit more experience.
1:49:31Pat McAfee:You're going to go with Faison, who's obviously the immensely talented freshman that could become something special. What have you seen from him early, and what are you maybe waiting to see in this Texas game from him? Yeah, a young guy that's super mature from the time he got here on campus in January, great work habits, prepares in a great way, has consistently gotten better, and that's dating back January to spring ball through the summer. into training camp first three weeks has continued to grow he's taking great care of the football he's been really decisive Fundamentals continue to grow inside of the pocket accuracy continues to get better.
1:50:06We really like what he's doing Tomorrow he's just got to be him and take another step.
1:50:10Pat McAfee:What do you see from this Texas team? Obviously gigantic comeback against Ohio State Arch has three wins over top ten teams at DKR Obviously coming here to your stadium eighth largest stadium in the world. What do you expect from Texas? and what have you seen from you? Yeah, you know what you're getting from that team. You look at the maturity, competitive spirit that you have to have to be resilient and come back in the Ohio State game. Typical Texas team, really talented, big and strong up front, and obviously tremendous skill. So 60-minute ball game, you got to go play the next play. They're going to make some plays.
1:50:42We need to be on the right side of it at the end of it and go make the play that makes the difference.
1:50:45Pat McAfee:AJ has a question for you, Coach,
1:50:46Nick Saban:back there at the Thunderdome. Coach, obviously there's so much talk about Arch Manning and what he's been able to do with his lineage. I guess when you see him on tape, what do you guys have to do defensively to try to slow this guy down? Yeah, first of all, he's played in a lot of big games. And you can see in the Ohio State game, no matter how it starts, he's going to continue to play and compete and give his guys a chance. We've got to be able to present different looks. We've got to win at the line of scrimmage, get him into third and longs, and then we've got to get off the field. We've got to affect the quarterback on third down.
1:51:14But that comes from playing really good first and second down defense.
1:51:17Pat McAfee:Yeah, so obviously on the offensive side, we know your big ass brain. Thanks. I appreciate that. I feel like you probably have a large brain. It feels like a lot of big football minds have larger heads. What hat size? I'm not sure at this point in my life, but we'll check that out and give you the stat. Okay, please do. Please let me know. Cause it looks like there's a huge brain in there, but on the defensive side, obviously there's some changes that took place. Tone has a question for you, coach. Yeah, coach, obviously bring in Jim Knowles as your DC. He's got some experience against Sark when he was at Ohio state in the playoffs there.
1:51:49When you're an offensive head coach and you bring in an experienced D.C. like that, how much direction do you give them or do you let them run with it? And how's the experience been first year with Jim Knowles? I know he brought in some Penn State guys to help with the transition as well. Yeah, coaching staff, whether it's the primary coach at a position or an assistant that all has experience within his system, having been a coordinator, gone different places, I know the value in that to get the information to your players as quickly as possible and start the growth pattern. And we had some talent here on campus and wanted us to put those guys in the best position to go play really good football right from the start.
1:52:26And Jim's a great mind. I've gone against him. I think he does a really good job in game preparation, but does a really good job adjusting throughout the course of a football game as well. And he's put our guys in a great position. Philosophically, we had a large amount of conversations at the beginning. But then you've got to let him be him. And I think one of the things that he's great at is taking the personnel and being able to put those guys in a position to be successful. And you look at who we've been defensively here in the early part of the year, multiple personnel groupings is a great indicator of that.
1:53:02Pat McAfee:We've got a minute until the hard out, but we will continue digitally with Coach Hypo, obviously down here in beautiful Knoxville, Tennessee. 101 ,915 people, eighth largest stadium in the world. Is that a huge advantage to you, or do your lads get a little bit nervous going into that type of environment? Our lads should not be nervous playing in front of our crowd tomorrow. It will be a great atmosphere. Neyland's always electric. It doesn't matter who we're playing. It will be a little extra juicy tomorrow afternoon. But a great opponent, and you've got to go play. And we'll be ready to tee it up.
1:53:34How do you kind of simulate that type of pressure?
1:53:37Pat McAfee:Maybe because Faison, first time, maybe in this type of game, taking on freshman quarterbacks against number one teams in the country have not done great. Is there anything you tell him to kind of prepare him or you just kind of let him do his thing? You've got to win in preparation. You've got to win in practice. But don't make it bigger than it is. It's 11 on 11 when you get between the white lines. And day in, day out, he's gone against really good personnel, a lot of different structures. He's prepared in a great way. And let's go let it rip tomorrow afternoon. What is your speech before the game?
1:54:06Pat McAfee:How much are you acknowledging the moment? Like tonight, I assume you guys have a meeting tonight? We do, yeah, here. on campus before we go to the hotel. Okay, so you have a meeting. Is your messaging like just reiterating what you guys have done, like X's, O's-wise, or mindset stuff? Like how do you kind of address your team? Tonight at the end of it will mostly be mindset. You know, your Friday night, there's a rhythm and a routine to it. Play the game, your tips and reminders. Visualize the strain and the plays that you've got to go make and enjoy and get away from it a little bit tonight.
1:54:38And it's an early kickoff tomorrow. Wake up and let's go eat pregame meal and get ready to roll. What is the pregame meal? Anything good? I'm going to have to check with our strength staff on that. It'll be all right. What do you like, peanut butter pancakes? Scream pie. I'm an egg and oatmeal guy in the morning. Really? Anything on the oatmeal that we need? Blueberries on there, don't we? Yeah, you've got to have a little fruit. Okay, I love it. Blueberries and brown sugar. Let's go. How about granola? Any granola on there? No granola.
1:55:06Pat McAfee:What about bacon? We don't have any bacon or egg? All the bacon will be flying around in the morning. Yes, I guess, sir. Okay. Okay, I like that. Okay, we've talked about pregame meal way too long. Well, I just want to know the process is you're getting a speech tonight, and then we've got pregame meal, and then we've got 101 ,915 people with the number one team coming to the country. It's not just the number one team in the country coming to town. There's obviously the president of the United States. I don't know if you've heard this. Ty has a question for you. Yeah, Coach, we've heard a lot about this leading up with, you know, communication going down if the president's in the building or when he moves around or, you know, whatever the case may be.
1:55:39has that been something going in that you've been told, like, hey, be aware, like, this is going to happen, have a plan in place? And if that does, how do you account for that when you have a freshman quarterback? Yeah, we were made aware of it beginning of the week. It's happened at some of the games that he's been at. It hasn't happened at some of them. So, you know, our team on campus has a plan with his personnel to try to limit that. But we'll be prepared and ready no matter what happens.
1:56:09Pat McAfee:I think you should maybe have, like, the most complicated play of all time ready. Yeah. You know? Just as soon as it goes down goal. Run it. This is it? Yeah. And you do, like, maybe this is the sign, you know, because you won't be able to talk to them. Yeah. I don't think they'll even know that this is the sign. You guys can't hear a damn thing. Sounds good. Yeah. Are you a yeller? Are you a yeller? On game day? Nah. Game day is the moment where your players got to go play. I think it's important that they go play the next play. It's the only one that matters. During the course of the week, there's moments where you're going to have to get after them.
1:56:45But game day, I think competitive composure is something that's important from your team. You've got to demonstrate that as a head coach, too.
1:56:54Pat McAfee:Yeah, especially with 18, too. I mean, it was like 35-year-olds. Now I think they're kind of cracking down on how old. Yeah, not quite as many 35-year-olds playing. Still a few old. There's still a few old ones. Yeah, it certainly is. And, hey, go do your American dream. I'm happy there are rules in place for this, though. But you are at a wild development stage for humans, let alone athletes and football players, but for humans as a whole. Connor has a question for you about that.
1:57:18Nick Saban:Yeah, Coach, especially with a quarterback that is as young as yours is, how do you help deal with kind of successes and failures with Faison and then, of course, your entire team? You know, there hasn't been much failure this year so far. You scored, you know, 40 points in each of your first three games. But how do you kind of approach that when it comes to successes and failures as a football team? Yeah, the mindset of playing the next play. You talk about those things, you know, early in the Georgia Tech game. You know, we don't perform the way we want to on a special teams play. Momentum swings, the look, the maturity that our guys displayed in that, I liked.
1:57:55But you talk about this game. When you're going against good competition, it's not going to be smooth sailing for 60 minutes. And you've got to create that mindset of going and playing the next play and playing that play independently. And for a young quarterback, we talk about a lot of things on the field, off the field, how consistent you have to be. And up until this point, I've been really pleased with what Faison has done demonstrating those things.
1:58:19Pat McAfee:Yeah, we've loved watching Faison. There's a lot of young quarterbacks in the SEC right now. Seems like the league's on fire, SEC right now. Yeah, it's a great league, top to bottom. You better be ready to play every Saturday. Top to every team, huh? Man, you better show up. If you don't, go look at scores. You'll get bit in the butt pretty quickly. Well, Nick Saban's already starting to plant the seed about how much better the SEC is than the Big Ten and everybody else. So, you don't need to say anything, I don't think. That might be the only thing that I like Nick Saban talking about right there.
1:58:51Pat McAfee:You're the absolute best. Good luck tomorrow. Thank you for the hospitality, and congrats on having a team yet again. That is obviously in contention conversation for the whole damn thing. That's huge. We appreciate you, man. I appreciate it. Great to have you guys here. Ladies and gentlemen, Coach Hypo. Yeah, Coach.
1:59:06Nick Saban:Kongman, who's going to win this game? I'm taking Tennessee because he's still on the headset. Okay, he took it off. I think I'm thinking Texas. We did see him take his headset off. Coach doesn't have his headset on anymore, does he? No. No, he does not. See you, Coach. Thank you, Coach. Hey, pick Tennessee, Coach.
1:59:25Pat McAfee:What happened? I did not hear it either because I was in the middle of a good time.
1:59:27Nick Saban:I asked Kongman instantly. I asked Kongman, who's going to win this game? He goes, I'll take Tennessee for sure because Coach still had his head set on it. He looked up and he said, oh, he took it off. No, Texas.
1:59:35Pat McAfee:Okay, I like that. That's a smart play. That was like last week when I picked Ole Miss. And I go, still have LSU to win national championship. But I like Ole Miss today. You know, you got to be able to do that. And I don't know about it. Yeah, maybe. I don't know who wins the national championship. I think LSU has enough talent to be able to do it if they can stay healthy. I think last week they had no chance. I think that game was never going to go. I thought football justice, and I believe in football justice in a pretty big way, even though, you know, Michigan won that national championship that year.
2:00:06Nick Saban:Yeah, exactly.
2:00:07Pat McAfee:That was like my big thing. I go, I joined college game day. Then everything I'm hearing about the Michigan team, I'm like, oh, football gods. Like, listen, it's not me to judge. The football gods will be the ones that will be doing the judgment here. That's kind of how I viewed it because that's kind of what normally happens. And then they win every game and win national championship. I mean, through it all. They won a national championship. Every week I was getting on a microphone going, I just don't think all this is allowed to happen and you're allowed to win. And then they would win. And then the next week.
2:00:36Pat McAfee:I'm pretty mind-blown that this is still happening. If everything they're saying is happening, is happening, I don't know how they get by this one. Too many distractions. Win again. Win again. Win again. All the way to the national championship. And I got Michigan people telling me, you just love just thinking that people are against this, the football gods are against this. It's like, no, I genuinely believe in, like, football justice, as Pete Coding described it. I think that was a guarantee last week in Oxford, personally, just how I view things. But also Trinidad's unbelievable. So is LSU, though.
2:01:05Pat McAfee:They've got a lot of talent across the board. They certainly could have made a run. And why not this Tennessee team? Freshman quarterback, Faison, he's electrifying. Kamario Taylor down there in Mississippi State, unbelievable. I mean, you talk about –
2:01:18Nick Saban:Bama, Keelan Russell, he went by man. So good. Yeah.
2:01:22Pat McAfee:Keelan Russell is the highest rated recruit in the history of Alabama. And it's like, what? Yeah, there's like 400 Alabama NFL guys. This guy was ranked the highest coming out of high school. It's like, how is that even possible? It's just the SEC obviously loaded. Big Ten loaded as well, just maybe not as far down into the rankings. And then WVU, Oklahoma State representing for the Big 12, neither of us ranked. Okay. Not yet.
2:01:49Nick Saban:A win gets WVU inside the top 25, obviously.
2:01:52Pat McAfee:Yeah, I agree. Inside top 20, maybe. 19. Maybe top 14. Who knows? I mean, LSU. That team beat Oregon. One of them. That team beat Oregon right there. Yeah, they might be ranked if they didn't lose to Tulsa if we won, for sure.
2:02:04Nick Saban:It's a good-looking bridge, isn't it?
2:02:06Pat McAfee:I mean, look at that bridge, dude. Look at that bridge. Great. What year again? What year was that, Bill? In between 1930 and 1931.
2:02:13Nick Saban:It only took a year?
2:02:14Pat McAfee:Yeah, they used to go after it. Wow. So if it was in between the year 1930 and 1931, that'd be 1930?
2:02:21Nick Saban:Yeah. Starting in 30 or they start in 30. Well, either that or they don't exactly know when it was finished.
2:02:27Pat McAfee:Oh, just a couple booze bags down there saying, could have been done December, January, February. Who knows? Might have been 30, 31. How many feet is this thing? 1 ,700 what? 93. And if you notice, it's your basic open spandrel arch bridge, which obviously aren't that common anymore. So it carries the load. I do see that. It does look like it can carry a good load, Donner. Remember, they do the sail gating as well here. That's awesome. I love that.
2:02:52Nick Saban:That's the best.
2:02:53Pat McAfee:The Vol Navy, maybe? Is that what it's called? Yeah. Somebody might volunteer. Is that what it's called? For anything? A guy with great mustache who's a police officer here says, yes, that is exactly what it is. Thank you for that answer. One of the best mustaches I've seen from a cop in some time. There's been good mustaches across the board from the cops across all these towns. Okay, down in Baton Rouge, got a good leadoff with a phenomenal mustache. Everybody's kind of suited and booted. Firemen as well, firefighters. This mustache here, top of the line, I would say. This is one of the best mustaches I've ever seen.
2:03:24You know how that Vol Navy started? Hmm. Well, a local radio broadcaster named George Mooney wanted to avoid heavy game day traffic, so he took his boat up to the river of the stadium. It started the whole thing. That was in 1962.
2:03:37Pat McAfee:That's a good idea, bro. That's a good idea. One if by land, two if by sea, especially if there's traffic I see. Listen, let's take a break. On the other side was that Thug Monk and the head coach of the Cleveland Browns, and then we're going to send in to the greatest weekend of all time. I appreciate you boys back there in the Thunderdome. Not a bad little feel-good Friday here. Not bad at all. This hoodie, brand new, buddy. It's six. That is nice. Pretty good. It's a large, too. I'm wearing large hoodies now. Shut up. That's crazy. 33 pants, AJ. Wow. Wow, look at you, man. Yeah, starting to really feel healthy, too.
2:04:13Pat McAfee:Got over whatever that was I had for, what, two months? How long did I have that? Yeah. I was very worried there that I was just, my new life was just not being able to have my ears pop when I fly every time, so it's just a constant in my head, you know? But we're back. Ears are popping. We are lucky and thankful to be here at Rocky Top. It's a hilly place, bro. You know? You get from one part of the campus to the other. It's just like West Virginia University. You're going. You're going up some stuff. It's gorgeous here. I would recommend traveling here. I would also recommend seeing a game here.
2:04:46Pat McAfee:Eighth largest stadium in the world. It is spectacular. We're thankful and lucky to be here. Be your friend. Tell your friends something nice. It might change your life. We're back in. Fight. Fight.

2:05:38Nick Saban:As you celebrate the game, take a deeper look at its roots. The people growing the grass, bathing the lots, welding the goalposts, inspecting every football. The hardworking people that make every Sunday possible. Carhartt is proud to outfit the crews behind the game. Visit carhartt.com slash join the trades to learn more.
2:06:04Pat McAfee:Hello, beautiful people, and welcome back to our magical feel-good Friday on this football eve that should bring to play our three stars now. Football! He's the absolute greatest thing of all time. That's college football national champion, Super Bowl champion, Ryder Cup winner A.J. Hawk. He is in the Thunderdome with the lads. I'm down here in Knoxville, Tennessee, as we prepare for Tennessee to host Texas College Game Day, 9 a.m. Eastern on ESPN. Cannot wait to get out here and celebrate the hell out of Rocky Top. The Toxic Table is also back there in the Thunderdome at Boston Corner and at Ty Schmidt.
2:06:39Pat McAfee:Lads, good to see you, boys. Good to see you as well. Let's go to one half of the hammer. Done. Cowboys AP Tone. Tone, ahead of the weekend, what should we keep our eye on? Has it been over, under, dogs, favorites? What is something to think about? Okay, so week one it was the overs. Week two, it was the unders. Favorites were week one, dogs in week two. So we've gotten a little bit of a mixture of both so far. Maybe week three as these teams are figuring each other out, we will get some normalcy and figure out where we're going this season. How about us not having a single clue? Teams that have lost by 20 points this season are 5-0 the following week.
2:07:14Pat McAfee:So whenever you think a team is absolute ass, maybe they're just trying to figure some things out here early in a football season. Joining us now is a man that we think is an absolute football legend. two-time college football national champion, a man who is now tasked with bringing back a legendary team to a legendary place, the head coach of the dog pond, the Cleveland Browns, ladies and gentlemen, Todd Monklin. Yeah, coach! Thank you guys for having me, and again, congrats to all of your success. We are very blessed, right, to get to do what we love to do, and shoot, I mean, let's go. Yeah, you're damn right.
2:07:55Pat McAfee:Shoot, let's go. And thank you for the kind words to us. Congrats to you. We saw the day you showed up in Cleveland as the head coach. We'd seen other places. Other places had a parade. Other places had every single employee out there clapping. I think there was a potential flyover at one place whenever they had a new head coach. You walked in, from my understanding, styrofoam cup, if I remember the video, of coffee. How you doing going to work? Jeans, buttoned down. no real celebration, no real dramatics, just kind of walked in there and immediately went to work, it feels like. Can you tell me about what it has been like to be the head coach of the Cleveland Browns, which is obviously a place that has had a lot of head coaches.
2:08:34Pat McAfee:You know that, being around football for a long time. But what has it been like being the head coach since day one until now after getting your first dub? Well, it's a special place, special fan base, and it's been great. I mean, it's everything I've worked for to be a head coach in the NFL. And all we needed to do was get to work. All the rest of it doesn't matter. All the talk, all the fanfare. You guys know this is a production business. And that's all we did was we got to work on where was the roster at? Where do we need to go? You know, we knew we were going to be working on playing the long game, right, in terms of rebuilding the roster.
2:09:14And the whole goal was when I got the job, people thought like, well, at his age, he's going to try to do everything, win now. And the way I look at it is, wouldn't it be really cool to 20 years from now, when I'm 80, that people are saying, why don't we do it more like the Browns? Why can't it start right now? Why can't it start by the way we draft, how we develop, right? How we become a consistent winner. And that started, you know, from the day that I got here. And then we're going to continue to do that, to do it the best way we can. And I think we've had a pretty good start. And we've just got to continue to get better.
2:09:54We didn't put our best foot forward the first week, but our guys owned it, fought like hell to fix it, and continued to battle. And we've had a great week of practice. So I'm looking forward to watching us get after it on Sunday.
2:10:08Pat McAfee:Huge win against the Buccaneers. Obviously, everybody was maybe crowning the Tampa Bay Bucs before going into the year. They pay their franchise quarterback. They pay a staple in defense, maybe a little bit of a turnover. but the Bucs are going to be a good team. Massive long, what, two hours? How long was the rain layover? And you guys had to get a big-time stop on the defensive side. How did you handle that? What was your messaging to the team? And whenever you come back and get that type of dub, what does it do for maybe your culture? What does it do for your locker room? As you obviously have a lot of season left.
2:10:36Well, the guys handled the break great. We played music. We hydrated. We fueled. And we got ready for whether it was four-minute or two-minute offensively some of the game-ending plays. But I just told the guys, like, we're in the driver's seat, man. They've got to get in the end zone. We've been a leader on defense for years. We've got the unit we want out there to shut it down. And those guys came through in a big way. But they handled it great. And I thought our coaches did a great job of dialing into our players some of the looks that we were going to see from their offense. And we found a way to finish.
2:11:14Pat McAfee:Okay, last question for me before the boys all have their question. The quarterback competition was the topic of conversations for all of training camp. I think you were trying to manage that as best as possible because obviously any position matters, but the quarterback position is the most important one on the entire team. Deshaun Watson comes out week one, not good. Been a long time since he had been starting quarterback. We had always seen him when he was at his best back in the day with the Houston Texans. He comes out and says some things about the media, what their expectations are. You seemingly stick by his side.
2:11:43Pat McAfee:He gets a huge win against Tampa. Can you tell me about your relationship with Deshaun as quarterback and kind of how you were able to balance all of that? Because you had a lot of narratives that were potentially at play with every single word that came out of your mouth. Well, sure. And what we're supposed to do is believe in our players just like we would believe in our kids. And that's all we did was do everything we can to build a system where our players can play fast and we can execute at a high level. and I have a huge belief in all of our players especially to Sean because I've seen it now had he been away from the game for a while yes and playing only whatever it was 19 games over five years that's going to sting not only um maybe his confidence level but system wise like who is he and uh all I saw was a guy that just continued to work he had no reason to to work over the last 22 months to come back he had all the money was guaranteed for god's sakes i mean shoot he'd already had a heck of a career but for him to come back and work like he did and um and again it's still a work in progress we are as a team we are individually as a coaching staff and all of our players but i was happy for him all the work he put in because isn't that why we do it don't we do this for our players to try and create the best version of our players that we can and show belief in them and then let the chips fall where they may.
2:13:08You know, I just think that that's – I got a lot of that from John Harbaugh and being around him, the way he would, you know, speak to the players, the way he would build confidence. And, you know, we'll continue to grow as a team because we're still very young,
2:13:24Pat McAfee:especially on offense. I love hearing the fulfillment that you feel from your players having success. Hopefully that only continues over there in Cleveland. You know, there was somebody already in a pretty important position whenever you arrived. Connor has a question about front of the program.
2:13:37Nick Saban:Yeah, Coach, congrats on the win, by the way. Really, really looking forward to seeing how, you know, your team develops and just watching you guys win because it's been a long time for Cleveland. And one of the guys that's been trying to do that and turn the whole thing around has been Andrew Barry. Usually we've seen, you know, head coach, GM come in together, kind of build the team together. But you're coming into a situation where he's already started that process. How is it working with him? How is it kind of learning from him and also teaching him some things of the culture that you want to instill in Cleveland?
2:14:06Well, it's been great. I would agree with you that there's got to be an alignment in terms of how we see the football team run and yet the players that we want to add to the locker room. And I really thought the year before I got here that there was an outstanding draft. And I think we backed it up with another draft because nobody in an organization is more important than the personnel people. I believe that. It starts with that. And then the head coach is second because they're the ones that select the players. They're the ones that, you know, in terms of developing and building the roster. And so we just take it from there.
2:14:48And we've done that up until this point. And we'll continue to do that. But it's been great working with Andrew.
2:14:54Pat McAfee:Andrew, I wanted him to be the Colts general manager when he was like 28 or something. I forget the age he was. Obviously, it feels like he was built for this particular position, hoping to have great success in the Munkin era. There's not only Andrew Barry and people in the building looking for success with you as head coach over there in the dog pound, sir. There's a massive other group looking for it as well. AJ has a question for you, Coach.
2:15:16Nick Saban:Coach, so I live in Columbus, Ohio. I'm around a lot of rabid Browns fans. I grew up around a lot of them. I guess I know you were there as the OC in 2019. now as the head coach. What have you experienced? What's it been like with all the Browns fans? I've always thought these guys are absolutely thirsty for wins, and if you win football games, they will put you on your shoulders and carry you through that city. But right here, obviously, you're high-fiving a lot of the fans that made the trip down to Tampa. But what's it been like so far as the head coach with the whole community there? Well, first off, when we came back out after the break, I mean, it was a home crowd.
2:15:49I mean, all those Browns fans stayed. I mean, they made it as loud as they could. That was really cool. I know that, you know, at times you don't, when it's an NFC team and you go down there, maybe it's once every eight years that you get down there. But first off, there's a number of people that might look at it and say, why would you want to take that job? Why would you want to take that risk? Why would you want to go there? I said, are you kidding me? I mean, an opportunity to win in Cleveland and get it right? I mean, that's all me, man. I mean, that's who wouldn't want that opportunity to build it starting not from scratch, but starting and the ability to do it here.
2:16:34I mean, where else would you want to do it? But like right here, you know, in Cleveland. And I love it. I absolutely love it. The fans have been great. We're not where we want to be yet. And I use that word yet. We're going to fight our ass off to get there every single day. and it's been our players, all our players have done is they spot the ball and they go to work and they practice and that's all you can ask. And I just think we're just scratching the surface of where we're headed.
2:17:05Pat McAfee:Coach, everything you're saying makes it sound like you're the perfect coach for a Cleveland Browns. Doesn't it, AJ? Doesn't it sound like he's the perfect coach for a Cleveland Browns? Yeah. Yeah, where else would you rather do what he's saying? Well, a lot of people would say, I don't know, there's like 31 other places. You know, that's what a lot of people would say. but you being perfect guy for the team, perfect time for the team. What if something special is brewing over there in the dog pound? Now you get a big time win over the NFC South, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, another NFC South opponent, obviously this weekend.
2:17:33Pat McAfee:Tone has a question for you, coach. Yeah, coach, obviously you come up on the offensive side of the ball, but when you have an opponent coming in like the Panthers, who are scoring over 30 points a game, Bryce Young's thrown for over 320 a game. They've been red hot to start the year on the offensive side of the ball. What's your process? What's your involvement on the defensive side of the ball for the game plan going into a game like this? Well, first, my first involvement is let's not have Browns hurt Browns. Let's not turn the ball over and help them offensively. And I've always been a big Bryce Sean fan.
2:18:03I was at Georgia when he was at Alabama. And everybody said, well, how have you seen him grow? I said, I haven't seen him grow. And hell, he was great back then. And he really is a tremendous player. And Dave and his staff have done a great job developing him and building, you know, players. and a system around him and what he does well. And so it's going to be a real challenge. And, you know, I meet with Rudy, you know, each week about what the plan is and what we intend to try and take away from them because you've got to try and take away something. Try to make them one-dimensional as best we can.
2:18:35And we've got to – it really doesn't matter whether it's Bryce or whatever. How do we affect the quarterback, right? This is a quarterback-driven league. If you don't affect the quarterback, it's going to be a long day.
2:18:46Pat McAfee:Coach, thank you so much for taking time. I heard the Browns are not the Browns anymore. I heard this is not the same old Brownies, from my understanding, even though the entire city of Pittsburgh will be saying that for the rest of their life. You understand the AFC North a little bit? I do. I mean, first of all, I got a ton of respect for Mike Tomlin. I mean, let's be real honest about it. I mean, I hope that the career that he's had as a head coach. and again the only way you kill a narrative is to play better right and to coach better and that's the way it is i tell our players it just happened they got me on a little roll you know about how you play and the name on your back doesn't matter it's what you do every week right i mean that's who we are right you're the expectation is uh how you play right and when you don't play well then you gotta own it and at that moment i was just fired up because um in a lot of ways you are that till you prove it wrong i guess the best way but do you change the narrative that is the narrative and we have the ability to change that and like i said i got a lot of respect for mike and you know it just it just hit me at that moment and you know it really i really didn't have that planned it really i just kind of got on a roll and then i kind of said it yeah well and now and And now I got told the guys, like, we got to continue to play good dudes.
2:20:06I mean, I put that out there. I back myself into a corner now. I mean, come on, man. Help a brother out, you know?
2:20:15Pat McAfee:Yeah, certainly. And I want to let you know, a good fuck that is top five things to say, I think, about anything, especially if you're right and passionate. And, you know, a lot of people try to speak things into existence. And a lot of people don't think that that's real or not. It's like, no, it's definitely real. Whenever you let the world know something, this is how you feel. The amount of pressure to back that up can be a great thing, not a bad thing. So I respect the way you're going about it. I can't wait to see the way your locker room responds. And thank you for joining us, Coach. Appreciate it, guys.
2:20:47Congratulations again to all of your success, Pat. I mean, there's only a handful of people that go the direction you did, take a risk, and freaking kill it. And you've killed it. And really, really cool.
2:21:00Pat McAfee:Really cool. Coach, Coach, we have killed it, and we're lucky to watch you do the same damn thing. Thank you for the kind words. Thank you for being a great coach, and thank you for caring about your team. We can't wait to see what the Browns become under your leadership. Ladies and gentlemen, it's Todd Munkin. Yeah, Coach! Way too nice. Is that the nicest guy of all time? Why'd he do that? I fucking love that guy. He is the man. Fuck that! I picked the Browns, right? Yeah, definitely, because it was coming on. Yeah. Okay. All right, sweet. I feel good about that. The Browns team ride. The Browns are the Browns?
2:21:30Pat McAfee:Home puppies Fuck that Fuck that Dude I love that Anytime you get a drop ball Fuck that I mean that's That's from You know That's from way down here That Yeah Good for him Change of narrative A little Kurt Signetti feel there A little bit Yeah A little Kurt Signetti feel I don't think they're the same way Because I think Signetti's a little bit more hands off A little bit more You know Strict As like the way he goes about communicating And it sounds like Todd Monkett is very open with his team and everything, but changing a narrative takes a lot, especially if you want to do it quickly. He said he's there for the long game, would like to be there for 20 years, but winning now would be great for him as well and for the entire city of Cleveland.
2:22:11Pat McAfee:You talk about being around a bunch of Browns fans, they deserve it. I'd say Browns fans deserve it, certainly.
2:22:17Nick Saban:They care. They're very passionate. I know that much. I played there, I don't know what, late in my career I played there, and I didn't go to any games growing up. I grew up like three and a half hours away probably from Cleveland, and that's the first thing I thought of. I was like, if you guys win games, this place will be crazy. Because they weren't winning at the time, and their fans are still there. They're still yelling at us. Still how they treated the away team, it was fun to see. It really was.
2:22:40Pat McAfee:Yeah, and it's like that's with them being asked perpetually. And let's see if old Todd Munkin's the right answer. A little bit older, not much fanfare. And all he said was, we just got to go to work, man. And he certainly did that. And he said, not only where else would you rather be to do this in Cleveland, nobody's ever said that about Cleveland about anything. Shout out to Cleveland getting that from their head coach of the Cleveland Browns and meeting it. It feels like genuinely feeling like that and meeting that. But it's like I had to go through a lot with the quarterback conversation. Like, hey, you're a brand-new head coach.
2:23:14Pat McAfee:You're in Cleveland. And we would like to just know, you know, what's going on at quarterback. Had an open competition. It was being reported by Twitter accounts on who was completing what to wear. It was loud. And this is your first-time head coach, most important position. And you can't say one thing or another because you might actually mess with what's going on at practice and who's actually good or not. So, kudos to him. Huge win. Carolina Panthers are a great football team. I think the Cleveland Browns are excited for it, as we are for them. AJ, thank you for traveling to Andy, buddy. Of course, baby.
2:23:48Pat McAfee:Enjoy it down there. Enjoy the game. Secret Service coming through.
2:23:52Nick Saban:Here we go. Sweeping the place.
2:23:55Pat McAfee:Yeah, we need the, I think that was the sound allegedly that was coming earlier. Was the Secret Service going to. Okay. About that time. Yeah, I don't know if they felt this cannon down here, you know what I mean? I don't know if they felt this. You know what I'm talking about. I don't know how they're testing for this. I don't know if I'm going to get rubbed down because of what I got coming off the caboose here. Make sure these guys aren't checking my right ass cheek, Joe. because I got a lot of ass in here. Dumpy knows what I'm talking about. Ain't that right, Dumpy? That baby Joe. Yeah, Big Joe over there might get searched too.
2:24:28Pat McAfee:Dialed in. Yeah, Big Joe's got good lean right now. Looking outside, making sure everything's okay. Big Joe, security guy for the season. Works for Disney. Used to be from Long Island, New York police officer. Nice. Was there September 11th. Was a part of the thank you that we did on College Game Day. You know which one he is he's uh, he's square. He's a complete square. Oh, yeah, Joey's Hey, you got square on top of a square, you know, and this guy got his hokas on and he's out there And he's got maybe the quickest mouth I've ever heard in my life. Don't be this guy You can tell he sat in squad car and just Everything great accent saws down everything.
2:25:15Pat McAfee:I mean, I don't think I've heard anybody this quick kill everything as hilariously as he has. We are very lucky and thankful, but he's got Secret Service figured out. He'll be dealing with Secret Service, so we're thankful for him doing that, Joe. Thank you to the ESPN production crew that set this up. We appreciate you guys. Shout out. Great work. It went off without a hitch. That's very rare. Feels like there's always some sort of tech problem, especially if the Secret Service is sweeping this place beforehand. So shout out to Barcode and the lads. Gumpy, good work over there, buddy. Good work, brother.
2:25:46Good show. Good week. Good work, Gumps. Good work. Good work, everybody.
2:25:52Pat McAfee:Talk to the table. Way to go, boys.
2:25:54Nick Saban:Way to go, dude. Good week.
2:25:56Pat McAfee:Good luck, Ma. One half of the hammer. Cowboys AP time. Way to go, buddy. Good work, Boney. You too, man. Behind the glass. I'll tell you what, lads. We had a lot of questions on what was going to happen. You guys have been working for the last couple of months, getting some reps in on who's going to push buttons, who's going to provide the computer input, who's going to handle the Zooms, who's going to go graphic to graphic. And Mitt and Bruce, way to go, boys. First couple of days. Way to go, boys. Done, lads. Have a drink, lads. Bruce, today it felt like you were really exploring the space there a couple different times.
2:26:29Pat McAfee:Is that what you felt a little bit more confidence today than yesterday? And hopefully that only grows, pal. I'd say I was optimistic for a little bit more improvement. I would say probably in the switching between the packages, you can kind of go like this and you can switch this to like 7-0.
2:26:47Nick Saban:Whoa! Holy shit! There's a lot of opportunity to mess that up, and I probably did more today. But yeah, you know, trying our best back here.
2:27:00Pat McAfee:Yeah, it's an opportunity to do things right too, not just get it wrong. Ain't that right, Ty? Seems like you have an interesting response there, the way Bruce just handled that entire situation. No, it wasn't Bruce. It was Mitt's very impassioned head nod right next to him, which was absolutely awesome. And, you know, Mitt's done a great job as well. Yeah, good tag team partner there, Bruce and Mitt. That's who we're depending on. Hey, boys, good work, boys. Good work, boys. Thank you. Not going to show themselves again. Don't want to do that. There it is. There you go, Mitt. Oh, God.
2:27:34Nick Saban:We did it. Yep, there it was.
2:27:35Pat McAfee:Nick, good work. Good work back there, everybody. To the graphic design boys, we appreciate the hell out of you guys. Hey, boys. Good job, lads. Zito production, way to go. Looks like the backyard's certainly coming together as long as the tech is well. Way to go, Zito. Baby Z. Well done, lads. Tim McAfee, I believe, was plugging some things in his stuff. I think he was getting things done, which we appreciate, Tim, for that. And on that note, let's get the hell out of here. Let's have the greatest weekend of all time. Tomorrow morning, 9 a.m. Eastern. College game day kicks off the best slate of college football that we've had thus far.
2:28:12And I think it launches us into a season of banger after banger after banger after banger after banger.
2:28:22Pat McAfee:Shout out to Seamus. Where the hell is he? Hopefully I'll see him at some point soon. But we're going to have the greatest weekend of all time because it's the next weekend. Let's never forget we're incredibly lucky to be alive. I am incredibly grateful to be a part of all of this. The boys and I having this as a job is ridiculous. And we will never, ever forget that. We will cherish it forever, and it only happens because of all of you.
2:28:45Pat McAfee:We hope that you.
2:28:52Pat McAfee:Very cool point there by AJ. We're talking about you, though, watching along. Thank you for everything. We hope you have the greatest weekend of all time. We see you for an overreaction Monday, where I'll be live from Chicago Chicago for the Bears hosting the Philadelphia Eagles, which will be wrapping up week three of the NFL slate. His college football has bangers. NFL goes international. And on Monday, we'll have all the stupid shit to tell you about it. Be a friend. Tell a friend something nice. It might change your life. We're in this thing together. Team on me. Good work, guys. Good work.
2:29:29Good work, everybody.
2:29:30Nick Saban:Thank you. Good work. Good work, Gumps. Good job, Gumps. Good job, Gumps. Good work, Gumps. Good work, Ogle. Way to go, Ogle. Good one, Sean. Thank you, Tony Dawgs. There it is. Get in there. Tony Dawgs. Oh, no. Secret Service has for your passport, Gump. I wore this hat. What is the hat? A Secret Service hat.
2:29:57Pat McAfee:Sweet. That's why I get a police license plate. You know, you get a police license plate. Yes, you do. Team on me. Team on three. Have the greatest weekend of all time, baby. One, two, three. Team. Goodbye. Before this, there's this.
2:30:23Nick Saban:As you celebrate the game, take a deeper look at its roots. The people growing the grass, paving the lots, welding the goalposts, inspecting every football.
