In short
Rich Eisen Show (Hour 2) episode featuring actor Josh Duhamel, plus sports talk about Caleb Williams/Bears offense, Ben Johnson, J.J. McCarthy/Vikings, and “Overreaction Monday” NFL roster/injury/preseason debates.
Guest backgrounds
Josh Duhamel is a two-time Transformers film star and actor; he discusses his new movie London Calling (in theaters Sept. 19), shot in Cape Town as a Los Angeles stand-in. He also shares personal ties to Minnesota sports and his own college football background (Minot State Beavers), including stats and Hall of Fame induction talk.
Key claims
Bears offense struggles in a preseason loss; Ben Johnson and Caleb Williams are being coached to be faster/decisive (“get rid of it”). Vikings defense should be stout with Brian Flores; J.J. McCarthy needs “a little taste” but will be a winner. “Overreaction Monday” argues Cleveland keeping four QBs is a roster mistake; Micah Parsons/Trey Hendrickson not playing Week 1 is “farcical”/overreaction.
Notable examples
Bears preseason vs Bills (38-0) and upcoming Chiefs game; Vikings’ planned back-to-back road games in different countries; London Calling plot: Duhamel’s hitman shoots the wrong guy, flees to LA; Tyrese Gibson hustling in Japan during press.

1:00Rich Eisen:This is the Rich Eisen Show. Rich Eisen.
1:04Josh Duhamel:He's the kind of guy that no matter what, whether you're asking him to pass the potatoes or, hey, can you sign this for my math teacher? Yeah, buddy.
1:16Rich Eisen:Live from the Rich Eisen Show studio in Los Angeles. How about these cyclones? Earlier on the show,
1:24Josh Duhamel:two-time Emmy Award winning actor Eric Stonestreet. Coming up. Actor Josh Duhamel, California Redwoods Attackman, Chris Cavanaugh, and Ryder Garnsey. And now, it's Rich Eisen.
1:40Rich Eisen:Okay, everybody. Hour number two of the Rich Eisen Show is on the air. 844-204-RICH-NUMBER-DOWN. Josh Duhamel is going to come out here. We're going to talk sports. We're going to talk about his new film, London Calling, that's going to be in theaters September 19th. So I'll make a note of that for next month. The diehard Viking fan will be out here. and a regular of this program. We love it. 844-204-RICH is the number to dial on the program. Listen, I think we can all agree that sometimes adversity is what shows you what a team is made of, what a coach is made of, what a collective group can do.
2:19Rich Eisen:Adversity. You learn a lot out of adversity. And I'll say this. the ups and downs of the Caleb Williams summer and preseason. You know, the downs being the videos coming out of training camp that don't look that great, right? Whether it's a practice moment or him trying to throw footballs through a hole in the net. The net with the hole, yeah. All that stuff. Then his body language, you're talking about all that sort of business. And then you're hearing Albert Breer coming here and echoing or reporting what a lot of others echoed was that Ben Johnson was having Caleb drinking out of a fire hose, that they're giving him a lot, and then they're going to start to whittle it down, and then it's going to look a lot better.
3:06Rich Eisen:And then it did in the preseason game against the Buffalo Bills, where the Bills go into Chicago and then get their teeth kicked in 38-0, thing and Caleb had a very nice night in his cup of coffee in that game. And then they take on the Kansas City Chiefs on Friday night, was watching that game while I was administering the hosting duties of Falcons and Cowboys live on NFL Network.
3:36And this just in,
3:38Rich Eisen:the ones of the Kansas City Chiefs are way better than the twos of the Buffalo Bills. Correct. Correct. Okay. Yeah. So for that week nine contest where Kansas City's at Buffalo, I'm rooting for the Bills' health. Yes. Okay? Very much so. If the Chiefs come in, knock on wood, just as healthy as we hope the Bills are, it'll be a great game. So it didn't look good at all. And Caleb and the Bears' offense struggled. And, you know, Tyson Bajan finished up. I don't know if you guys stuck around. I mean, he followed up his two-year$10 million contract and his highly emotional press conference that we played over the end of last week.
4:22Rich Eisen:Bayjit looked terrific. They won the game. They pulled the victory out of the jaws of week three preseason defeat. But the conversation that I'm taking away is what Ben Johnson was saying after the game about his offense and also Caleb taking a sack early on in this game and calling it for what it is.
4:46Josh Duhamel:There was at least one play where Caleb held the ball for, I mean, it was like five seconds, I think. Sounds like good protection. And took a sack. See. How are you guys coming along in that as far as progressing through, being more decisive and not holding on to it too long, trying to make a play and then have a negative play? Yeah, last week was a really good start for us. This week, it wasn't quite the same, it didn't feel like.
5:12Rich Eisen:So once again, we'll take a look at that, and we'll see what we need to address with it. Now, that part at the end was more coach speak of just, we'll look at the film. The other part looked like good protection, right? And then he gave a look like, this is what I'm telling the young man. Get rid of it. and it sounded like Rich Eisen show regular Kevin Fishbane with a question is he using Fishbane to make a point Fishbane is a conduit we should all do that that's not a fantasy team name that's more of a B side of a you know I think it's a flip side of a Sheryl Crow song Fishbane is a conduit every day is a winding road I'm just saying I dig the coach man I dig it he's very direct which I like well I mean if he's going to learn anything from Dan Campbell that's one way to go very direct get rid of the football hit your foot and boom let it go because I'm assuming again just knowing I'm not an all 22 person but I know the way coaches talk and certainly if they're the ones who are scheming it up somebody's probably open somebody if the protection in question is going to be there Ben Johnson's offense more likely than not somebody's open second level outlet deep ball somebody's open and I'm sure that's part of Ben Johnson's frustration and we'll see man because Because somebody's coming to bring up the heat right away.
7:06Rich Eisen:And his name is Brian Flores. That's the first game for the Chicago Bears. Week one. I'll be honest, man. You know, when you take a look at the week one schedule, I'm sure we can just dial it up again. You see all of these matchups. Steelers, Jets, Bucks, Falcons are one. Giants, Commanders, another Seahawks hosting the Niners, the, you know, the afternoon games, Lions, Packers, Texans, Rams, you know, you could definitely have nominated one of them as a Sunday, a Monday night game. Right. And when the schedule first came out, it was Vikings bears. I was kind of like an interesting choice for the Monday night, like sort of a higher register.
7:55Rich Eisen:Now as it's getting closer.
7:57Josh Duhamel:I'm into it big time. way, way into it.
8:03Rich Eisen:Because Caleb leads the draft class that has three quarterbacks chosen right away, and then a fourth chosen sixth, a seventh overall, pardon me, and then another one chosen 10th overall, and another one 12th. Six of the first dozen picks, quarterbacks, and it's going to be one versus the fifth one chosen, and J.J. McCarthy's going to get his first career start, and he's from the state of Illinois, and he's going to show up there, and we're going to see what the offense looks like with him. The Bears' defense is no joke either, but there is one blitz-happy sort of dude coming and who's going to make Caleb Williams make decisions fast.
8:42Rich Eisen:And I guess if Ben Johnson wants him to hit the back foot and go, it might be helpful. I don't know. We'll see. But the offensive line and its protection and Caleb's decision-making skills are going to be tested fast in front of the whole country, and we'll see what J.J. McCarthy can do with this offense. We'll wonder if Adam Thielen is going to be there. That's a big-ass piece of breadcrumbs. It was more of a loaf that Tom Pellicero dropped here when he was on Thursday's show saying, keep an eye out for Thielen to show up in Minnesota, and all they've done is trade two players. Now, Sam Howell being the latest to amass draft choices for some reason to basically tell Dan Morgan, the GM of the Carolina Panthers, is this enough for you?
9:28Rich Eisen:so I took away from that again Bears losing and hearing Ben Johnson's response to me I know this sounds crazy just as heartening as the week two performance against the Bills too because there's no sugarcoating he's being coached hard and from a guy that I think gets it and knows it Roma Doonze looked pretty damn good too I think he's the one there obviously that's just in, with all due respect to DJ Moore. But I think he's ready to roll, too. Two tight ends, they've got it. DeAndre Swift looked fast. They've got it. It's up to Caleb. Isn't that the way it goes in the NFL? Sure does. It's a Monday.
10:08Rich Eisen:I might be overreacting to what I just said, but it's time for Overreaction Monday. Hit it, please.
10:13Josh Duhamel:That was terrible. That was crap. That was garbage. This place sucks. Overreaction Monday. Monday's Monday. On a Monday. What's up, everybody? Monday. We're back. Sup, sup. You guys good? Yeah.
10:27Rich Eisen:Other than the fact that the last time you did a segment like this for What's More Likely, you used my 14-year-old to troll me? I did not.
10:33Josh Duhamel:As a question? I did not. I didn't have any Yankees in there. I'm not out of that. You were terrible against Boston. I didn't have any of those. Who's more likely to go worse
10:40Rich Eisen:to first? A team that's not going to do it, or the Patriots?
10:43Josh Duhamel:Well, I mean, I used two teams from the East Division who were in last place last year. And that's a big topic in the business, worse to first. And they played each other. I might be overreacting. What's first up? Oh, man. Reports out of Cleveland going to keep all four quarterbacks, guys. What do you think about that? I'll tell you what. They're blowing it by keeping all four quarterbacks on the 53-man roster. Big mistake. Well, I mean, who are they? I mean, I don't want to be the one to say it, but if his name was Joe Blow, Shador Sanders wouldn't be on the team. He would have got cut by now.
11:17Rich Eisen:We also wouldn't be talking about somebody not getting a shot at a two-minute drill at the end of a third preseason game either. That's obvious. I mean, it's obvious that we're talking about a fourth-string quarterback, potentially, because of who his last name is and what he did in college. We're not talking about his Quinn Ewers making it right now. I understand that, but that's what you get when you draft somebody who's got a name. But that said, he could be pretty damn good, and they want to stick with him. again, Pickett hasn't played a down yet. And they have a decision to make at the quarterback spot for next year.
11:58And I mean, crazier things have happened.
12:04Rich Eisen:But if you're telling me they're keeping a fourth guy just because it's Shador Sanders, why would they do that? If you're saying to not face any backlash, to sell jerseys.
12:14Josh Duhamel:Well, that might be it. I don't know.
12:15Rich Eisen:That might be it. About selling jerseys? I don't know. I don't know if that makes that much. They're going to cost yourself a roster spot.
12:22Josh Duhamel:It just seems like a roster spot could be used elsewhere. I wish that a fourth quarterback is not going to play.
12:27Rich Eisen:I think saying you're blowing it is not like they're going to cut somebody.
12:34Josh Duhamel:They're a team that we can all agree is going to struggle, right? So wouldn't you want to spend an extra roster spot on someone who can actually help you win on game day?
12:41Rich Eisen:Wouldn't you want to spend an extra roster spot at the most important position in the league where you can actually develop the guy and then figure out, do we want to draft somebody new next year?
12:49Josh Duhamel:Top 10 pick next year. There's going to be, it's a loaded quarterback class. I know. Then just kick it down the road. Why are you wasting a roster spot?
12:54Rich Eisen:I just think blowing, it's a little overreacting. But what else?
12:59Josh Duhamel:Terry McLaurin got his money. He did. Congratulations to him. So I had to cross his name off this next topic. But neither Micah Parsons or Trey Hendrickson will play week one.
13:08Rich Eisen:I think that's an overreaction. I think that is an... Like I said at the top, McLaurin you need to bring in because you need to get him involved in an offensive scheme that I know is the same, but even the OC, Cliff Kingsbury, said that they really can't start clicking on all cylinders until McLaurin comes back. Now he's back, and you've got two weeks of practice. Good enough. These guys, you could basically say, here's your helmet. Go hunt. You know what I mean? You just say, Micah, you see Jalen Hurts? He was the MVP of the last year's Super Bowl. Hunt. Hey, Trey, you see Joe Flacco? You can't miss him.
13:41Rich Eisen:He's nine feet tall. You know? So I kind of think that this is something that can be done last minute uh the micah stuff is just it's just it's weird it's it's getting as i said farcical um so i'll still call this an overreaction that neither are gonna play in week one yeah we're we're like 12 days away i get it but you can basically tell micah last second good you're in and you can do the same thing with trey hendrickson again those those guys are just hunters mostly. What else?

14:20Josh Duhamel:Still not talking enough about this guy and this team being the number one overall pick of the draft. I love Cam Ward. I love what he's all about. Loved his preseason. I think Cam Ward and Calvin Ridley is going to be the breakout QB wide receiver duo in 2020.
14:33Rich Eisen:Give me other ones that might that we can throw here. You got Trevor Lawrence. You got Travis Hunter.
14:39Josh Duhamel:How about Knicks and Mims? Knicks and Mims. Is that a good one? Something like that.
14:46Rich Eisen:Um, Darnold and JSN. Um, that's not a bad one. I mean, Hoskins just got in the air with McCarthy. I was just about to say that. I mean, Jefferson's not, but Jefferson. But McCarthy's new. Hmm. I mean. But also Jefferson hasn't been available this preseason. Justin Jefferson is just on a different planet. Um, what else were you going to go here? We just never done it with JJ. Well, I mean, you got a rookie quarterback and Ridley. That's not a bad one. Yeah.
15:14Josh Duhamel:I think that could be a fun, you know, I think it'll be fun. But breakout, like the best that we've got,
15:20Rich Eisen:sort of like Daniels and McLaurin?
15:22Josh Duhamel:Something like that, yeah. They could be this year's McDaniels.
15:24Rich Eisen:That's a tall order, man.
15:25Josh Duhamel:Daniels-McClurin.
15:26Rich Eisen:That is a tall order.
15:28Josh Duhamel:Just something to keep an eye on. Tennessee's going to be a fun red zone team.
15:31Rich Eisen:Justin Fields and Garrett Wilson doesn't count because they've actually... They were.
15:34Josh Duhamel:They did it five years ago. That could be fun, too.
15:37Rich Eisen:And plus the Jets and nothing good can happen to them?
15:39Josh Duhamel:That could be fun, too. Okay.
15:43Rich Eisen:All right. Okay. Okay. All right. It's tough to buy this one. Just throwing it out there. I can see it. It's tough to buy this as a they're it.
15:52Josh Duhamel:I feel you.
15:53Rich Eisen:It is an overreaction. All good. Just throwing it out there. But I am excited for Titans fans.
15:56Josh Duhamel:Running back trade over the weekend. Brian Robinson Jr. goes from Washington all the way across the country to San Francisco. I think he's going to be a little more involved than you might think. Okay. McCaffrey and Bryan Robinson, they're going to be the leading rushing touchdown duo in the NFL this year. I could buy that one. I could buy that one. This year's Sonic and Knuckles, if you will.
16:20Rich Eisen:You know, that would be quite something that you get McCaffrey in your fantasy draft, eighth, ninth, right? Right. In the first round. And then he gets vultured by a former commander. That'll be a tough one to swallow there. That ain't going to happen.
16:36Josh Duhamel:They're trying to keep the wear and tear on McCaffrey low. As he comes close to 30, they got Bryan Robinson in there. Boom, he's going to pound it in.
16:45Rich Eisen:I get it. Who else is in this mix? Sonic and Knuckles, obviously. Sonic and Knuckles. Hertz and Saquon.
16:52Josh Duhamel:Saquon. Go Raylan Allen, Brees Hall. How about Tank, Bigsby, and Travis Atien, TJ?
17:00Rich Eisen:Who's getting those reps? No idea. I got one for you. Javante Williams and Jaden Blue. I would have bet my last dollar that was coming out of it. Ramondre and Travion Henderson.
17:12Josh Duhamel:James Cook and Josh Allen. There you go. Lamar and Derek Henry.
17:17Rich Eisen:I'll call this an overreaction now.
17:18Josh Duhamel:Could be fun. Just something to keep an eye on.
17:21Rich Eisen:Aaron Rodgers. Speaking of Aaron Rodgers, though, TJ,
17:25Josh Duhamel:it's almost like we planned that, which we did not. Aaron Rodgers, you know what he did this preseason? Nothing. Zero. Never saw him. Neither did Josh Allen. by the way. Neither did Michael Penix Jr., someone with three career starts last year. That's wild. Steelers and Falcons, big mistakes sitting these guys in all of the preseason. Boy, man.
17:46Rich Eisen:A little different. Rogers, I would say no. Like, that's not a big mistake. New team? New system? Arthur Smith? Dude. Yeah, but you can get reps in practice without putting them out there. And Rogers is just like the last thing you want.
18:00Josh Duhamel:Live ammo?
18:01Rich Eisen:He's 41, man. Let's try and have him chill. Let's put it this way. At least they didn't have him shoving a sled like last year's veteran. We don't know that, though, because remember Coach said he wasn't saying that that wasn't going to be the case. The Panics thing, though, is a head-scrasher. That is definitely an easy second guess right now. Easy second guess. So the big mistake stuff. again you use this language that this segment's about that catches me you know in a way of saying how can i agree with it but i'm rooting for the kid obviously obviously i love you know raheem morris and all those guys down there you got a potentially firepower offense that one is just like what are we doing the rocky london i'm not playing cousins i get i know i might get that Well, I mean, you got to keep him fresh.
18:53Rich Eisen:Just in case. I know. That phone call comes.
18:56Josh Duhamel:Yeah. A call from 818 comes out there.
18:59Rich Eisen:Well, it's definitely not coming from Vegas either. I mean, they need somebody, but they're not getting cousins.
19:03Josh Duhamel:No, they're in the Mike White. 818.
19:06Rich Eisen:The Rams aren't getting him.
19:09Josh Duhamel:That's a way homer for you there, Rich.
19:10Rich Eisen:Half a proper reaction. Half a proper reaction.
19:16Josh Duhamel:Okay.
19:16Rich Eisen:Okay.
19:18Josh Duhamel:All right, last one. We got big college football this weekend. You know what I mean? Texas, Ohio State. Let's go. Texas, Ohio State this weekend. Preview of the national championship game in January.
19:33Rich Eisen:I don't think that's an overreaction. Obviously.
19:38Josh Duhamel:One versus two right now.
19:39Rich Eisen:You know, I mean, Clemson plays LSU as well. Chris Fowler is coming on Friday's show to discuss that. He's calling that with Herbstreet in advance of the Lee Corso Palooza that's coming to ESPN this weekend. You know, there's always Georgia. There's always somebody else from the SEC that lurks.
19:57Josh Duhamel:Notre Dame's right there.
19:58Rich Eisen:Notre Dame's right there. Michigan just named Bryce Underwood. Penn State's number two. 17-year-old BFF. I think he's 18 now. They just named him the starter. Penn State is now in that top five mix. Penn State's now two. That's great. It's great. Until we can beat Ohio State. Well, you've got to score more than two touchdowns against him, can you? Listen, Drew Auer could be the number one pick in the draft. I don't think this is an overreact.
20:24Josh Duhamel:Okay.
20:25Rich Eisen:Do you? I know you said it, but now that you can get out of the bit for a second.
20:29Josh Duhamel:Oh. I'd be shocked if Ohio State made it. Okay.
20:39Josh Duhamel:Amen. I fully expect Texas to be there because I've got to stick with this Arch Manning narrative.
20:43Rich Eisen:You can't get any. You can take down the music, Mike. You can't get any worse than losing to one of the most banged up, undermanned Michigan team in your house and have Michigan plant the flag in the middle of your house and a Donnybrook breaks out and their special teams unit is trolling you by spelling out Ohio on your turf and the entirety of the fan base is in full throat and froth about firing their coach and everybody needs to go and let's burn it all down. And then they won four in a row. And not only won four in a row, looked clearly the class of the sport in so doing. For you to choose them as the one to not make it.
21:32Josh Duhamel:Well, I think they beat you this year and then let down after that. How about that?
21:36Rich Eisen:Now that's a potty mouth you're bringing to the equation. All right, let's take a break. We've got our friend Josh Tumell coming on out here. That's next in advance of what's with the music? London Calling coming up. In theaters near you, September 19th, Josh Duhamel, much sooner than that.

How are you? London Calling is in theaters near you September 19th. You play a hitman who's running from the UK after something goes down that's not very good for you.
24:15Josh Duhamel:No. How about that long hair? I forgot that my hair was that long.
24:22Rich Eisen:I mean, I was going to try and talk about the film, but the hair is just throwing me off. That's a weed, by the way. Really? That was not real. No, that was real.
24:33Josh Duhamel:It was real. I was singing for a split second. Oh, man.
24:39Rich Eisen:Back on the Rich Eisen Show, everybody. Josh Duhamel is here. Yes, sir. I'm sitting at the Rich Eisen Show desk, furnished by Grainger with professional. Great products for every industry. Grainger has you covered. Call clickgrainger.com or just stop by. Just saw a delightful, funny clip from London Calling, which is in theaters near you, September 19th. Awesome, brother. Good to see you.
24:57Josh Duhamel:Shot that in South Africa.
24:59Rich Eisen:So London was calling and you shoot it in South Africa. Yes.
25:02Josh Duhamel:So it was, it was, we were able to find in Cape Town, South Africa, we were able to find an area that was old enough and looked a lot like London. Yes. And in the movie, my character shoots the wrong guy at the opening. He's kind of a guy who's, you know, seen his better days as a hitman. Doesn't quite see like he used to and shoots the wrong person at this party. Has to flee to LA. and it turns out Cape Town is a perfect, you know, double for Los Angeles. How about that? I would rather shoot it here. It's just right down the street, but, you know, we had to go to South Africa to shoot for L.A.
25:35Josh Duhamel:Okay. Whatever.
25:37Rich Eisen:It's right down the street. It's the business, sir. Yeah. It's the business. They got to figure that out. It's the first class problems in real life. It'd be nice not to have to leave town so much. Listen, right here. I know. You get to, lucky dog. What felt longer? or your trip to South Africa, or the 405 to here? Well, that's actually a fair question. I only ask those fair questions, but I appreciate it.
25:56Josh Duhamel:Yeah, it was, so I flew in from the woods yesterday. I was up in Minnesota. Yes. Back in North Dakota and Minnesota, and so excited to get home. Hadn't been here for months. Yes. Almost nine months. And right away, just stopped traffic for an hour. It shouldn't be a 15-minute drive.
26:18Rich Eisen:It took us an hour and 15. Welcoming you home. Did you see any of the Vikings out there while you were there? Oh, yeah.
26:24Josh Duhamel:I mean, did I watch them on the preseason?
26:26Rich Eisen:What do you got?
26:27Josh Duhamel:What did you see? It's so hard to tell. I actually really do enjoy watching the preseason. Yes. Because you get a chance to see some of these rookies who may or may not make the team. Correct. Some guys you saw in college. Are they going to be legit when they hit the big time? and I'm a little upset that J.J. didn't play more in the preseason, though. I think we just needed to just give him a little taste.
26:51Rich Eisen:I'm talking about not Justin Jefferson, J.J. McCarthy. Yeah, no, that's what you're saying. Just give him a little taste.
26:55Josh Duhamel:I know, but he's not like he's got a lot of reps. Just give him a little taste. Last year is when it all went downhill because he was playing. He's still got to play at some point. I know that.
27:03Rich Eisen:You know? I love your coach. I do, too. I know the kid. I just love the way that he's, when he talks, when J.J. McCarthy talks, You now need to say the last name. You're saying JJ on your team. Because, you know, J to the fourth power, that's what's going to get you guys going. And we just need the kid healthy. Just a little taste. O 'Connell knows what he's doing. You're a big Michigan man, so you're covering for him a little bit. I'm not covering for him. I'm actually giving you information that should put you at ease.
27:35Josh Duhamel:It's not like he's Aaron Rodgers who we know. You're going to have to go through this at some point.
27:41Rich Eisen:last year or this year? What do you mean? The seasoning part of him. Like at some point you're going to have to break him out of the box.
27:48Josh Duhamel:Sometimes we've got to release him.
27:51Rich Eisen:Release the hounds. Release him to the hounds and see what happens. I'm excited for you, though.
27:55Josh Duhamel:I am too.
27:56Rich Eisen:I think he's going to be really good. I do too.
27:57Josh Duhamel:Listen, I love O 'Connell. I really do feel good about JJ. He's a winner. Yes. I think our defense is going to be stout with Flores again. I think that that offensive line has been completely revamped. Yes, sir. We've got all those weapons on offense when Addison comes back. And we've got J.J., of course, and Hawkinson. All the ingredients, it's about whether or not J.J. is going to be as good as we think he could be. Yes. And I think he could be.
28:22Rich Eisen:It seems like you might get Thielen back, too. I don't know if you heard this rumor. That would be great. You're flying back from the woods. I love that. But it looks like they're amassing some draft choices by trading away some players at the last minute for a reason. Like who? Do we know? Oh, you just traded Sam Howell to the Philadelphia Eagles for a couple of draft choices.
28:43Josh Duhamel:Yeah, we got Carson Wentz, baby.
28:44Rich Eisen:Yeah. Did you see him out there in the woods?
28:47Josh Duhamel:Everybody loves to hit on me for loving Carson, but I love Carson Wentz, and I'm not going to apologize for that.
28:52Rich Eisen:Are you caping for Carson right now?
28:55Josh Duhamel:Listen, I am rooting for JJ 100%, but I've been wanting Carson back home with the Vikings now for his whole career. So he's a great backup.
29:07Rich Eisen:Okay, good, because I'm glad you said those words. He's not going to be taking his job. Because the whole thing is like you'd want to see Carson Wentz out there. No, no. I was about to say, this will not age well.
29:16Josh Duhamel:Carson would say the same thing. He knows what his job is. Do you know him?
29:19Rich Eisen:I know him well. Have you gone in the woods with him? No, no, I've never been hunting with him.
29:24Josh Duhamel:I do know Thielen, too, by the way. Thielen. Look at me name dropping over here. This is real Minnesota as they come. Yeah. Adam Thielen. Yeah, so my nephew played baseball in Detroit Lakes this last summer, and I texted him. I said, look at this. sent to a picture of the old baseball field he goes yeah i hit a home run there i remember hit a home run there and they called me out because i forgot to touch first base damn i guess you never
29:48Rich Eisen:forget that no how are you as a quarterback in north dakota excellent really really really good
29:55Josh Duhamel:like what sort of game i was i was okay uh i was a drop back passer of what it all contact Okay. I was not a runner.
30:01Rich Eisen:You got rid of it?
30:02Josh Duhamel:I did. Okay. I had a pretty good arm. As a matter of fact, a little shout out. Please. Our 1994 Minas State University Beavers football team is getting inducted into the Hall of Fame.
30:13Rich Eisen:Where?
30:13Josh Duhamel:Minas State. So our 92 team already got inducted. We had two really good teams. There was NAIA Division II, but we were good, man. And so, you know, all the boys are going to be back in Minas State, go Beavers. on the 12th.
30:29Rich Eisen:So you're going?
30:31Josh Duhamel:You're going to the Hall of Fame? I'm going to try. Alan Unger, the director who's sitting right over there for London Calling, has got me working like a rented mule promoting this movie.
30:41Rich Eisen:Alan, I mean, you're blaming your director for not showing up. You're going to the Hall of Fame. I know. You have a speech, the whole thing.
30:47Josh Duhamel:Well, it's not me. It's the team. I'm not getting inducted into the Hall of Fame. Well, you're the quarterback of the team, right? I was one of the quarterbacks. How many?
30:56Josh Duhamel:Hey, I played. I split time. Your best touchdown pass. But I wasn't like this.
31:00Rich Eisen:Your best touchdown pass. You got to remember this. Give it to me.
31:04Josh Duhamel:I was, I don't know. What do you got? It's probably, you know, my freshman year, I came in in the fourth quarter. We were getting our asses kicked. Yes. And I threw for 215 yards in like the fourth quarter in like four touchdowns. I thought I was going to the pros. Are you serious? I thought that I was like, oh my God.
31:22Rich Eisen:Four touchdowns in 215 years?
31:23Josh Duhamel:And then I never saw the field again for two years.
31:25Rich Eisen:Do you have stats over there?
31:26Josh Duhamel:So according to this Twitter account, D2 College Football Spotlight. By the way, that's a terrible way to start a sentence, according to this Twitter account. They dug up some stats on you, Josh. So in 21 games, you were 95 for 190. That's 50%. 1 ,242 passing yards, 10 touchdowns, 11 interceptions. See? Thanks for that. You know, I do hold a record there, though. It said you started 10 games in 1993 and then were a backup in 94. Does that sound right? Well, split time in 94. Yeah. It's still a soft spot. All right. I should have been the starter. All right. Screw it. But we won't go there. Screw it.
32:01Josh Duhamel:Don't go to the Hall of Fame.
32:02Rich Eisen:It fueled me. It fueled me. Let's get him out there on the trail here for London calling. Okay. Yeah. Very good. Yeah. Well, there you go. So, yeah. I'm going to induct him to the Hall of Fame. You found your calling. You found your calling. You definitely found your calling. That's for sure. Josh Duhamel here on The Rich Eisen Show. What do you like about this movie that we're getting set to see in September 19th? Oh, I really do.
32:21Josh Duhamel:one of my favorite things I've ever done. This dude over here, Alan Unger, is a legit director. We did a movie called Bandit a few years ago. It's just a really, it's kind of a throwback to those 90s buddy cop movies, although neither one of us are cops. I'm an over-the-hill hitman who, like I said, had to go to Los Angeles to escape getting targeted myself. Working for a low-rent mob boss, Rick Hoffman, from Suits. Oh, sure, yes, of course. super talented dude yes um i work for him and he's got a son who's a bit of a marshmallow and in order for me to go back and see my son in london he makes me take his son out on a hit to teach him how to you know toughen up and be a man and it goes horribly wrong but that kid jeremy
33:10Rich Eisen:ray taylor is super talented too well we just saw a clip with him it was a funny clip september 19th it's in theaters near you really fun movie fantastic and um i look forward to seeing that Everyone that's around here as well. You've told this story, or a story before, but I'm wondering if we could get you to tell it again or another one. Your favorite James Caan story from Las Vegas.
33:31Josh Duhamel:Oh, gosh.
33:32Rich Eisen:Josh Duhamel.
33:33Josh Duhamel:Well, I can't say the same one I told you last time. Well, it's all right.
33:36Rich Eisen:You got another one?
33:37Josh Duhamel:This just means I've been here too many times. I don't know what to talk about.
33:39Rich Eisen:It's like, what, a marriage?
33:43Josh Duhamel:James, Jimmy Caan. Which means you would love being together. I mean, there's just so many that are suitable for TV.
33:52Josh Duhamel:honestly the guy was just amazing I just love that man I miss him he taught me a ton did you ask him about Godfather? I did ask him about the Godfather
34:00Rich Eisen:that's all I would do
34:02Josh Duhamel:I think I told you this before I asked him if he'd ever met Brando and he looked at me like you dumb son of a bitch did you ever see the Godfather? and I said oh that's right
34:16Rich Eisen:he treated you like you went to the toll booth I mean that's all I would do that Brian song you know I would and I did get to meet him a couple times we did have him on the podcast years and years ago I think he was the number one grossing box office star
34:32Josh Duhamel:in 80 and 81 makes sense he was top of the food chain for a while
34:39Rich Eisen:but just to be on a set with him all the time on TV
34:41Josh Duhamel:he was one of those guys who he really enjoyed chaos syndrome He engaged with everybody. It didn't matter who you were on the set. He was always there, always telling stories. Well, not always in a good mood, but still had a great sense of humor.
35:02Rich Eisen:No matter what mood he was in. And so what do you get the most when people run up to you on the street? What do you get the most people bring up to you from your career?
35:13Josh Duhamel:Either Transformers or Ransom Canyon's been getting a lot of love.
35:19Rich Eisen:It's getting some run lately for you? Yeah, it's been good. So Transformers, that's the one that did it?
35:23Josh Duhamel:Transformers, well, those are giant movies, and I wasn't shy. I was the man in those movies, but I was the military guy. People, especially boys of a certain age who are now grown up, most of them, still talk. You know the cool thing, Rich, is that I've had several guys in uniform, military uniforms, come to me and say that, you know, I watched the Transformers movies, believe it or not, what inspired me to go join the military.
35:51Rich Eisen:No kidding.
35:52Josh Duhamel:Yeah. You got to love that. Because Michael Bay did a really good job of making the military look just badass. And, you know, I look back at that now, and it's one of my biggest regrets is not joining up. Really? I really is. I just wish that, I really wish I would have done that. When you were younger or something? When I was, yeah, when I was, I couldn't do it now. and it's easy for me to say this now. Understand, right, yes.
36:14Rich Eisen:But no, when I was 18, 19, I should have done it. I should have gone and put - Living in North Dakota, you were talking about? That sort of thing? Yeah. And so that's pretty cool. Yeah. Because I guess I'm looking at it right now. Transformers, the first one was 2007. Mm-hmm. So you're getting people now with their kids coming up to you and saying, you know.
36:30Josh Duhamel:So like boys who are young men who just like, because those movies are made for boys. Yes. You know, from like five to 25. Yes. and they just love those movies and so many of them now are grown men and a lot of them have come up to me and said you know that movie is what inspired me to go join up
36:51Rich Eisen:well you know everything that's old is new again is there any chance to join up? no do another transfer oh I thought you meant getting the military no sir no no no
37:03Josh Duhamel:not saying that what do you think? I don't know I never say never but I think that they're still making a bunch of those movies, right? They're still doing, they're still making Transformers movies.
37:13Rich Eisen:Just to get you in the mix. Let's get you going. What would I be now? I went from like cadet to. What would you be? Lieutenant Colonel in about six years. You're running the show, bro.
37:24Josh Duhamel:I should be like a.
37:26Rich Eisen:What was your favorite scene from it? From any of these films? My favorite scene? Yes, sir. From the Transformers.
37:35i think the stuff we did out in the desert was really fun um you know i just i i look back at
37:41Rich Eisen:for me it's not the movies as much as it was the making of them i remember we were in detroit
37:49Josh Duhamel:yeah right there was it no chicago i'm sorry chicago on michigan avenue you know where they have the river going through and they have a little build the skyscrapers around and this is the third one and people that by this point knew about these movies so they would literally bring lawn chairs and coolers of beer and just sit and watch the explosions all day in their high rise they would just sit and watch like because just one explosion after another i love it and that was one of those moments like wow this is like i feel like we're weirdly in some big explosive theater or something i love it you got a good tyree story Oh, yeah.
38:27Josh Duhamel:What do you got?
38:35Josh Duhamel:Oh, God, I got a great one. Okay, so Tyrese, I forget which one it was. We were traveling the world, doing all the different press in all the different cities, and we were in Japan. And every city we'd go to, he'd go to the local clubs because he had a single that was coming out. He was like, we're international, baby, we're international. And so he was trying to promote this single while we're promoting the movie and i go out there to so there's a harajuku you ever heard of that in in japan it's like the super high fashion it's like it's a really cool street in in tokyo okay and i walk out there and there's tyrese about a foot taller everybody there in the middle of the street shooting a music video on the harajuku i was like dude we're supposed to be like going to a press junket here in like 15 minutes what are you doing so he would just he he was like that dude hustles he's always been a hustler i just remember him doing that like sort of he was doing like one of those um time lapse things yes where everybody was shooting past him and he was like singing the song so right before you gotta go to a junket yeah that's some that's baller he didn't sleep that dude just that's baller 24 hours a day don't you think that's baller i'm sorry he's
39:46Rich Eisen:You get ready for your junk and I'm going to go shoot a video. He is fearless. And there's a reason why he's had the success he has. He is that. Same to you, sir. Love having you on, dude. You too, my man. Thanks for coming straight out of the woods and coming here and talking about your movie. Go J.J. McCarthy. How far they go. Give it to me. I know you already did the win-loss game. You had him 13-4. So you had him getting pretty much the same record as last year. How far do they go?
40:14Josh Duhamel:NFC North is going to be maybe the best division in football.
40:18Rich Eisen:Maybe. Well, you play the AFC North, too. And who else do they play in the AFC? Is it NFC East also? I forget who it is. It ain't easy, but it's not easy for anybody.
40:27Josh Duhamel:I think the Bears are going to be good. I think Caleb is really going to start playing with that new coach. Right. I think the Lions are already going to be good. I think the Packers are going to be good. It really depends on how much J.J. balls out. Okay. You know, because we have as much, if not more talent than anybody in that conference.
40:45Rich Eisen:I'm looking at the schedule right here, and I'm seeing, I don't know if you're going to have a premiere in London for your movie, but they're going to be in London right around the time your movie comes out. I don't know if this can hook up for you. They're going to be in London. When is that? October 5th and the week before they're in Ireland. The Vikings are the first team to ever play back-to-back road games in different countries. It's never been done.
41:10Josh Duhamel:That's pretty cool.
41:10Rich Eisen:Yeah, they're going to be a test case for the NFL right here. We'll see how it goes. So maybe you can do this. Go Vikes, baby. Go Vikes. How far do we go? Division round? Championship? I think. You want to play on game? I'm going to say we win the division. We won it last year. Why not again? You get a home game. You're scolding. You're scolding. Yeah. Uh-huh. And then you win that. You go to the divisional round. We'll see what happens. Yeah.
41:32Josh Duhamel:Okay. This is when I think JJ really needs to be that quarterback that can take us over the edge. because we always get there and then we just sort of... He did it in college. He sure did. I can attest. You're going to love him. You're going to love him. I saw him at the T-Wolves game during the playoffs. JJ were sitting together. I got nervous to go over there and talk to him.
41:55Rich Eisen:Why? I don't know.
41:57Josh Duhamel:I wanted to walk over there and talk to him. I was like, I can't do that. I don't want to bother him. You didn't do it? Wow. Why? That's crazy.
42:04Rich Eisen:That's wild. Come on. I can't believe I'm trying to buck your confidence up. This is feeling really weird. You were in the mirror this morning, right, Josh? I feel like this is role reversal from your movie. Okay, very good. Good to see you, brother.
42:24Josh Duhamel:All right, go see London Calling.
42:26Rich Eisen:That's September 19th in theaters near you. Make a note of that right now. London Calling.

Like, this is it. This is it. Everything you worked for, everything you dreamed of, yeah. In terms of working and dreaming about it, you sent me a video before I boarded the plane to get here. Yes, sir. And this video is what, JJ?
44:11Josh Duhamel:It's pretty much, long story short, my dad manifesting my entire life. And, you know, it was right before I was born. And him just kind of saying, you know, going through the names and what my name was going to be. With your mom? Yes, with my mom. and you know he was just like this is gonna be daddy's little quarterback and and we have that video you were and you've not shown this haven't shown it you know he only showed me it like six months ago really yeah yeah so i was just like oh how come i didn't see this earlier and he said i
44:40Rich Eisen:was just waiting you know he's a patient well everybody it's gonna get dusty wherever you are here is so your dad's shooting it on a camcorder yep on the day of your birth yes sir which is January 20th, 2003. And you'll see the timestamp in the lower right. Your mom, Megan, is sitting in the hospital bed. Yes, sir. Having a conversation with your dad. Check it out. What other, babe?
45:08Josh Duhamel:I like Jonathan James, and I want to call you JJ. You're going to tell me anything. You're going to tell me your wife. I like those names. Yeah. I'm going to call you JJ. It's going to be daddy's little quarterback. I don't know. But if not, that's okay. My football is okay. It's totally okay. I can't see your room.
45:37Rich Eisen:Daddy's little quarterback. Yeah, it's crazy, right?
45:41Josh Duhamel:Crazy. And then we've got the, there's the after photo.
45:45Rich Eisen:Right there.
45:46Josh Duhamel:Wow.
45:47Rich Eisen:It's a big dog right there. There's daddy's quarterback right there. And moms too.
45:54Josh Duhamel:Dude, man, I'm getting all misty just seeing that. Yeah, I'm not going to lie. I got a little bit too. But, you know, it's a lot, you know, from then to now that took place. And, you know, so much they sacrificed. And, you know, just unconditionally grateful for everything they've done for me. And, you know, it's only the beginning.
46:13Rich Eisen:Good old stuff from J.J. McCarthy, whose successor once removed. Bryce Underwood was just named the starting quarterback there in Michigan. He turned 18 last Tuesday.
46:27Josh Duhamel:He looks, what is that from Bad Boys 2? He looks 30.
46:32Rich Eisen:Right. Right. And, again, Bryce Underwood is only a year older than my oldest son. He's only a year older than Zan. Yeah. Unreal, man. And it starts this coming Saturday, baby. college football. What was that tweet that we were talking about? Somebody sent me. Somebody you saw it too. Talking about college football in March, April, May, June, and July, and August. It's the same thing. Can't wait for college football. In September, it's like I can't stand this F &G. Hopefully, I don't have that feeling. Hopefully, I don't have that feeling. It's coming up this very weekend. It's going to be awesome.
47:13Rich Eisen:We're six days from Texas.
47:14Josh Duhamel:and um and that's and that's 9 a.m here on the west coast we wake up and bam it's on i know i'm
47:20Rich Eisen:hopefully that's the idea is i wake up just before that because i want to sleep in and plus i don't get to see urban uh jeff in detroit let's take his phone call what's up jeffrey how are you sir
47:29Josh Duhamel:what's going on fellas hey real quick i don't know if you noticed or not or if i told you or not nor rich eyes and carry certain privileges calvin johnson got off a private airplane here probably about three, four months ago. And we were talking on the sideline, and I said, I talked to you on the Rich Eisen show.
47:47Rich Eisen:He looked at me and said, what up, though? I said, yeah. Why did all of the other chauffeurs get super pissed? Because good old Calvin got in my car. We had the best conversation back to his house, man. The guy's A1, and I appreciate that from you up. I really and truly do. And he gave me a hand bun. You know what I'm saying?
48:12Rich Eisen:You know what? Let me tell you something. It feels so good to know when your team is good because we used to be the bums riding through the neighborhood waiting on Kansas City and Baltimore to throw out their trash at the end of preseason to see what we can rummage through and get to put on our team to make it go. Now everybody is waiting on us to put out the trash. Man, we got some receivers on our team. That receiver room for the Detroit Lions is something else. Isaac Tesler, that dude is the truth. A homegrown dude that is that Detroit grit. Man, listen, my GM, he hits on those picks, guy. He hits on those picks.
48:50Rich Eisen:Well, Dan Campbell said today that this is the best he's felt about the roster top to bottom since he's been there. And thanks for the call, Jeff. I appreciate that. And congrats on the tip you got from Megatron. We're talking all about Transformers now. Listen, hey, the story about the Lions, it's simple. Everybody thinks they're not going to be as good because, A, they slipped up last year and got one and done, and, B, they lost both their coordinators, and it's going to be on Dan Campbell. Dan Campbell's, you know, everybody thinks he's a great coach for a good reason. So now he's not going to have a bench, and he won't put his stamp on the team because the coordinators will be less than.
49:32Rich Eisen:And plus we also saw what happened the last time a championship quality team lost both coordinators. The Eagles took a step back. So everybody's putting that all together and say the Lions are beatable. And he's like, we've got the best roster we've ever had since I've been here. Aiden Hutchinson's coming back. They're not going to have, knock on wood, 90 million people on injured reserve. And let's go. And they're in Green Bay to start the season. Good Lord, what a game that is for week number one. Wow. and that's the that's the line story because they're better Jamison Williams is going to be that much better I think Jameer Gibbs is going to be that much better the offensive line is one of the best in the league Jared Goff was an MVP candidate last year the defense is healthier it's just again they didn't get it done last year and they got the one seed in Detroit everyone had to go through Ford Field and they got won and done by the Washington Commanders.
50:34Rich Eisen:Jaden Daniels walked into that building with a fresh roster and a great season and took them right out. Took it to them, man. But they also didn't have the defense healthy. They didn't have any of their, you know, they had, I mean, who was their top defender that they had healthy? Like fully healthy, they just didn't have. And I know everyone can complain about health, but it's just that result, along with the Eagles, took a step back when they lost both their coordinators, and Ben Johnson is gone in division, and Aaron Glenn is gone to the Jets, and Goff still has that, you know, reputation in the mind's eye of some people that he's not tough enough.
51:24Rich Eisen:He hasn't proven anything just yet. and it's just like, it's time to beat the Lions, forgetting that they're better, healthier, top to bottom, right?
51:39Rich Eisen:I think I kind of nailed the question about the Detroit Lions, and hey, Ben Johnson's getting a big Caleb Williams better, and hey, the Packers are deep, and we will see what J.J. McCarthy does look like with Minnesota, but it all comes down to it. Aren't the Lions still the class of the NFC North? I think so. Right. I think so. But they're not going to take out the Eagles, and they're not going to take out the commanders, and they're going to have a tough time in their division. I mean, this is the conversation. I don't think any of us are going to take them to go to the Super Bowl, are we? I have to decide this in the next eight days, and I'm toying with the idea.
52:18Rich Eisen:Okay. I am toying with the idea. Because if I'm sitting here and I'm saying the Chiefs are going to utilize getting the tar beaten out of him last year in a rallying cry. Why wouldn't the Lions? Why wouldn't Dan Campbell do that? And Aiden Hutchinson's coming back. He could win Defensive Player of the Year. He could. I mean, they're saying. Chiefs didn't lose their coordinators. They're saying that they have to, once Aiden Hutchinson blows up a play in training camp, they had to keep it going. Otherwise, they couldn't run plays. Man, the Lions. Can't wait for that. What a season right around the corner.
52:52Rich Eisen:Same thing like Hour 3. Hey, it's Ryan Reynolds here for Mint Mobile. Now, I was looking for fun ways to tell you that Mint's offer of unlimited premium wireless for$15 a month is back. So I thought it would be fun if we made$15 bills. But it turns out that's very illegal. So there goes my big idea for the commercial. Give it a try at mintmobile.com slash switch. Upfront payment of$45 for three months,$90 for six months, or$180 for 12-month plan required. $15 per month equivalent. Taxes and fees extra. Initial plan term only greater than 50 gigabytes may slow when network is busy. See terms.
