In short

The Rich Eisen Show discusses the Indianapolis Colts’ decision to name Daniel Jones the starting quarterback and what it means for Anthony Richardson, including Richardson’s public response, trust issues raised by his agent’s ESPN quote, and the possibility Richardson could still become starter early due to injuries. The episode also shifts to Rodney Peete’s NFL/TV career reflections, his Super Bowl and Barry Sanders stories, and personal segments about his son RJ (autism) working with the Dodgers and how that changed his life. It further covers Kings Court (Peete and Holly Robinson Peete) and light banter with other guests.

Guests (backgrounds)

Rodney Peete, 16-year NFL veteran quarterback; Steve Tasker, seven-time NFL Pro Bowler; plus appearances/mentions of Albert Breer and Michael Irvin.

Key claims

Richardson “respects” the decision and will “stay ready,” but the host argues the agent quote undermines trust and decision-making confidence. Examples: Bryce Young benched for Andy Dalton then returned; Daniel Jones’ last start loss involving Bryce Young.

Notable examples

David Ajabo preseason hit; Jets/Colts quarterback depth scenarios; Peete’s Barry Sanders handoff deception story; RJ’s Dodgers clubhouse job since age three.

This is the Rich Eisen Show. Go, go, go, go. All right, 25, go! Pump up the volume. Told yourself. Kind of like to tell you I told yourself. Live from the Rich Eisen Show studio in Los Angeles. Shane Steichen named Daniel Jones the Indianapolis Colts starting quarterback for the season.

1:16Rich Eisen:He's proven that he's played good football in that 2022 season. Today's guests. 15-year NFL veteran quarterback Rodney Peet. Seven-time NFL Pro Bowler Steve Tasker. And now, it's Rich Eisen. That's right, everybody. Welcome to this edition of the Rich Eisen Show, live on the Roku Sports Channel, live on the Infinity Sports Network, Sirius XM, Odyssey, and more. It's just, I got to be honest with you, SportsCenter on Monday night, announced on Tuesday, I'm calling the YouTube game between the Chiefs and the Chargers in Sao Paulo, Brazil. And today, major announcement tonight. I will be back in the chair of RPM tonight on ESPN2.

2:08Rich Eisen:Thursday, NBA, two night. Well, I never hosted that, so I can't go back. I hosted RPM two night once. And I believe, if I'm not mistaken, I'm going to ask Kenny Main this, that I believe I'm the only host in the history of that program who has to call AAA to change a tire.

2:30So, I don't know.

2:31Rich Eisen:We can ask ESPN Research if that's true. So, I love starting the show with big announcements, and that's the latest one. Okay, so just, you want to let everybody know. Tweet that out. Yeah, sure. With fire emojis and, you know, tires. Tire axle. How you doing over there, Chris? You good? Great, man. what's up i just told you what are you doing everything yeah how are you mike del tufo good to see you i'm still thinking of your rpm tonight rpm tonight tonight i remember two let you know what which network it was on two what's up tj jefferson how are you over there sir what's going on the big question is when is the ocho gonna get you oh yeah what are you then okay i don't know speaking of tire axles isn't that what uh yes patches was throwing at You can dodge a wrench, you can dodge a ball.

3:25Rich Eisen:Dodge a wrench, you can dodge a ball. By the way, that was the motto of me in the rundown meeting for RPM 2 night. Back in the day. Did it once. I don't know why, but never did it again. And in the difference of the SportsCenter, never wanted to do it again.

3:46Rich Eisen:So I checked all the boxes. Did you have to wear a leather jacket? Remember Keith got pissed? I know. He said, welcome to the end of our careers. That's how he launched ESPN2, sitting against Susie Culver, I believe. At any rate, fun times. 844-204-RICH is the number that I'll have a conversation with us today. Steve Tasker is going to join this program in the middle. We'll talk Buffalo Bills football with him. Rodney Peet's making his way to our studio right now. Nice. I don't believe Rodney's been here. He's a much better half has been. and Holly Robinson Pete is part of the new Bravo dating series King's Court that they are all hosting together so he's joining us here in hour number one Albert Breer will join us in hour number three perhaps we'll talk with him about what we're going to talk about here again led the show with this yesterday Daniel Jones is starting quarterback in Indianapolis and Anthony Richardson is not and you know last year as we know his first year cut short due to injury last year um up and down more downs than ups for for anthony richardson and um this year though he was going to be stuck in this competition with uh daniel jones and he lost the competition despite being the number four overall draft choice just wait for it three drafts ago two years ago normally that'll give you a leg up over somebody who was once upon a time a sixth overall draft choice but from another team who's come from another team so and they're different giants for the team that drafted them vikings are the team that took them when the giants just cut them in the middle of the season saying we're done now usually that guy doesn't have a leg up over somebody who's been drafted by a team and the team's general manager who drafted him is still there in indianapolis and chris ballard number four overall draft choice anthony richardson is now going to be wearing an earbud i don't think they use clipboards anymore that's an old school reference for a backup quarterback tablets Tablet.

6:00Rich Eisen:Tablet. Tablet. Hold on the tablet. Don't call it an iPad because the league will push back. Yeah. Let you know. Maybe on a Microsoft Teams meeting, we'll let you know you were wrong. It's a tablet. The point of this is the coach made the decision. We assume the general manager is part of it. We assume ownership is aware of it. Altogether, a decision was made. and I don't know which way to go first here. We'll go with Anthony Richardson and his comments about it. He said all the right things. Hit it. You know, you just got to respect the decision. You know, I feel like he's the better fit for the team, better fit for the outcome of us winning.

6:50So you just got to respect it and just keep working. You know, that doesn't undermine any other work I've been putting in. doesn't, you know, doesn't say that I haven't improved. You know, I'm proud of the improvement I've made. Sam is also a part of that. So, you just got to keep stacking on that. Just keep getting better. You say you respect it. Do you agree with it? I mean, I got to agree with it. You know, at the end of the day, whatever's best for the team, that's best for the team. You know, if it was me, I'm pretty sure, you know, he would be having to answer the same question. So, at the end of the day, you know, I respect it.

7:21And whatever's best for the team, whatever's going to get us that Super Bowl ring, you know, I'm all for it.

7:24Rich Eisen:That's an outstanding answer because of course he doesn't agree with it. Of course he doesn't agree with it. Certainly when he believes that he's done and he's checked the boxes he was asked to check, even though he had problems checking and seeing there's David Ajabo standing there and he's going to come hit me and he's going to hit me so damn hard I'm going to hurt my hand and it's going to dislocate a finger and I'm going to be done for the night. one preseason start I got. Reminding everybody about your best ability in football being a lack of his in the first couple years as a professional quarterback.

8:07But he did

8:09Rich Eisen:point out that he thought he did what he needed to do to get this job.

8:16Mike? Like I said, I just got to be ready for whenever the opportunity showcases itself. I can't put a timeline on it. They can't either. I just got to, whenever the opportunity is there, I got to take advantage of it. So I appreciate every opportunity. But after two years and two benches, I guess what gives you confidence that they do still believe in you? Them telling me. They tell me they believe in me. My teammates believe in me. So I got no choice but to listen to them and believe that. So they're telling me one thing, and I got to accept that, and I got to live with it. And I just got to showcase that I'm still here, and I got to keep growing.

8:51Hey, do you want to stay here and be an Indianapolis Colt? Man, I thank God for the opportunity. And like I said, I got to stay ready, be ready. So, Lord's willing, if it's still here, I'm going to take advantage of it. But I'm not looking to get into going anywhere else or anything like that. Like I said, I'm here in the moment right now. I'm a Colt, and I enjoy being a Colt. So, I'm excited to be here, and I'm excited for Daniel. He's going to do a great job leading the team. I talked to him earlier, man, lead the team, lead the way. You know, we following him and, you know, wherever he takes us, that's where we're going to go.

9:24Rich Eisen:Family feud. Great answer. Professional answer. Then why is his agent talking to ESPN and giving him a quote? It's the opposite of professional. No, listen, I don't know Derek Jackson, but I did see that this is what put his client at the top of the ESPN news stack for a bit yesterday. trust is a big factor and that is at best questionable right now Anthony came back and made the improvements in the areas he needed to improve and by all accounts he had a great camp end quote it's it is an innocuous in the last couple of lines and potentially honest in the first line about that trust is a questionable factor it's a big factor and it's questionable right now because it's obvious that's a two-way street they don't trust him they don't trust him for various reasons there's always an iceberg and we just see the tip the tip of the iceberg in the preseason was him not figuring out that I need to get rid of the football when David Ajabo is standing right where he is and he's coming at me and in the previous year with Shane Steichen there and you know with Shane Steichen there as his coach since he's been a pro, this is clearly an issue.

10:56Trust.

10:58Rich Eisen:So why put it out there? Because I'll tell you what will help mistrust even more is can you trust Richardson's ability to make right decisions if his agent is giving this quote to ESPN? That erodes the trust. And the reason why Anthony Richardson, and we're clapping for good answers, even though we know he's potentially not laying bare his emotions over this, is because we know that in snap four of a season, the best laid plans of your starting quarterback can be down on the ground. Look at the Jets. And you also know that you're being benched by the team that drafted you way earlier than you ever thought anybody drafted in this position would be benched.

12:05Rich Eisen:It doesn't mean your career's over A or B means your career's over with your team. case in point, Bryce Young. Bryce Young getting benched for Andy Dalton last year. We were here saying, get out. You're done. You're finished. At one point, guess what? Andy Dalton got hurt. Who goes back in? Bryce Young. And guess who beat Daniel Jones in Jones' last start for the Giants? the guy on the screen and this if i'm not mistaken is from that game in germany that i called where bryce young starts showing off his personality and is smiling and making first down moves after he's picking things up with his legs and daniel jones winds up losing the game even though he did have a nice comeback at the end and it wasn't his fault why the Giants lost, it wound up being his last start there.

13:16Rich Eisen:And look who's starting in Indianapolis for Anthony Richardson. Can't make it up. You never know. That's why you hold your tongue. Anthony Richardson could be the starting quarterback of the Indianapolis Colts as soon as week two. And he could be playing highly meaningful snaps for the Indianapolis Colts as soon as week one. And that's the way life goes in the National Football League. And the trust issues that his agent is laying bare for all of us to talk about at the top of this program today. And on the top of the ESPN News stack as it was for a bit on Tuesday.

14:01Rich Eisen:would go out the window because you're now in the same boat together due to circumstances neither of you planned for which is why he's got to say i'm staying ready because anthony richardson you could have your opportunity back like that ask zach wilson two years ago and you know zach wilson did his best to make the most of that opportunity just didn't work out and you just know when he's now in miami odds are he's going to get a start and you know it'll be against the jets so when does it play the jets all right wait a minute i shouldn't go down that wormhole i made my point i i just you know you usually don't go in the uh direction of thanks for the soundbite of why the hell just say it.

14:56Rich Eisen:But it wasn't a soundbite, it was a quote. At least Anthony Richardson said the right things. And he's walking around that building, and a coach can sit here and say, you were the backup for the season, until, wait a minute, go in there, kid. Where's your helmet? How many times have we seen it? All the time. All the time. I stay ready. The last few years, 60-plus quarterbacks have started games. Right. How many teams go down to quarterback three? Many. Many. Yeah. Man, I can't wait for these games to start. 844-204-RICH, number to dial is Rodney Peet here. Has he made it to our Los Angeles studios?

I mean, if you played at USC, you probably played a road game at UCLA at one point in your life. I would hope so. All right, 844-204-RICH is the number to dial. Rodney Peet is here. That's next. 18:18Rich Eisen:Fidon himself right here in Los Angeles. Good to see you, Rodney. Good to see you. Good to see you, Rich. Yeah, and I'm still walking upright. Can you believe it? Well, I mean, 16 years, man. Yeah. How many years were you just looking back and thinking to yourself, I can't believe I'm still in this league right now? Because 16 years, even in somebody's wildest dream, it doesn't happen for a lot of people. No, it's true. I mean, that's why, I mean, the NFL, right? It's called not for long. So, you know, those first five years, they go long because you're trying to build your career. But after that, they go so fast.

18:53Those last five years that you're in the league, it just, it blows by. And you look up and like, man, I'm already in double digits. And the next thing you know, you're finishing up your 16 year. And, you know, at a time where quarterbacks weren't as protected as they are now.

19:09Rich Eisen:I like it. You're sitting at home watching this game, and you're like, get out of here, right? Because I know so many guys who played in this league from the era in which you played it were like, if I had those rules, I'd still be playing right now. That's the general sense of it, right? It is. It is. And not to be the get-off-my-lawn old man sitting there in the chair. Do it. You know you want to do it. Go for it. Yeah, when you can't get hit and receivers can't get hit down the field. You know how many times I got yelled out for throwing a ball a little bit too high over the middle, Rich? Right.

19:40Several times. I bet. A game. Right. But now they can't hit the receiver. They can't hit the quarterback. Yeah, I could probably still play. I'd last about one series, though. Right. Yeah.

19:51Rich Eisen:So who called you on draft night? Who gave you a ring? Wayne Fonts called me. Wayne Fonts. Yeah. Wayne Fonts. Detroit Lions. Wayne Fonts. Right. Yeah. Joking and whatever. Right. And you show up in Detroit. Yeah. And there's Barry Sanders. Yeah. Right? Yeah. Now, you crossed paths with Barry Sanders before. I did. He stole my Heisman, Rich. That's the answer I'm looking for. He stole your Heisman. That little fella, he stole my Heisman. You're spotting Heisman House. Yeah. You know what I mean? All these years later, I missed out on the Heisman House. Down at the Downtown Athletic Club. Who else was in the finalist of that?

20:31Rich Eisen:Troy Aikman. Troy Aikman was there. Damn. Yeah, we came out together same year. Troy finished third that year. And then a guy from West Virginia, Major Harris. Major Harris. Now, that's a name I haven't heard in a while. Big year that year, yeah, Major Harris. Man, oh man, and you wound up backing up Troy at one point, right? Yeah, yeah. Went to Dallas after Detroit and spent a year there, Rich. Unfortunately, Dallas won the Super Bowl three out of four years. And that one year in 1994, I was there. We lost to San Francisco, and we didn't win it. So it was kind of tough. Well, I was in, I worked for, I started my TV career in Redding, California in 1994.

21:14Rich Eisen:And I was in Candlestick Park that day because it was, you know, it's Niner's country up where I was doing local TV. And I came down with my equipment, and I was right there. Steve Young, as he was celebrating in that game, came right past me. I will never forget that, but that was the Super Bowl. It was. That game was the Super Bowl that day. I think they went on and beat San Diego 75 ,000. I was about to say, beat is a very tame word for what they did to the Chargers. We spotted them 21 points in that game, if you remember right, and then tried to fight back, but it was their day that day. I mean, Irv and Deion tell the story about they both swear was pass interference on the other person.

21:58Rich Eisen:On every ball that was thrown in 88's direction that day. Think about that, that matchup in the championship game. Deion versus Michael Irvin. Everybody, if you take a look. Jerry Rice in that game. If you take a look, it was there. Haley. Haley. You could go on and on and on from that championship game that year. That was pretty amazing. You know, for sure. I've got Rodney Peet here on the Rich Eisen Show. Do you still have dreams that you're putting on the uniform? None of those? No, no, not anymore. Not anymore because those dreams of all the glory and throwing touchdowns immediately turn into getting hit.

22:35And so dreams turn into nightmares.

22:38Rich Eisen:That'll wake you up for sure. And so which team do you think here in Los Angeles? Because I know you've got a show every day. You've got one later on today, right? Yes, I do. And so which team in Los Angeles has the better chance to win the Super Bowl this year? You know, I think with Harbaugh in his second year and Herbert, his second year with Harbaugh, I'm looking for big things from them. I will say the Rams, but obviously what's going on right now, you've got to say it with a caveat because you don't know if Matthew Stafford and his back is going to hold up throughout the whole season. Right.

23:10They took Philadelphia down to the wire last year. I think they're going to be better this year, but he's got to stay healthy. And if he does, I think they've got a legitimate shot to get there. More so, I think, than the Chargers right now.

23:22Rich Eisen:Well, I mean, I know what Cooper Cupp meant to this team and so many fans of the Rams, and I can't wait to see what he looks like in Seattle. Yeah. Right, because Jackson Smith and Jigba and Sam Darnold's kind of all new there with the exception of obviously JSN, but they got rid of DK Metcalf and they no longer have Tyler Lockett on the team. But all that said, Devontae Adams in this mix with Puka, Kyron Williams, I'm a Michigan guy, so I think Blake Corham is going to maybe get some more snaps and look the way that he looks. Jared Verse, the defense, and all those young guys who are just killing it right now.

24:01It does feel like, man, what is going on with Stafford's back right now?

Read the full transcript

24:05Rich Eisen:Whatever is going on with that, I don't know. We're in the town with acupuncturists and chiropractors and osteos. We got it all. We got it all. He brought the wagon up with the oxygen chamber and the whole deal he's got going on. But they are being a little cagey with it right now, right, and what's going on. Yeah, you heard McVeigh soundbite saying we're taking it day by day, and then he mentioned the word week, and he just tossed the word week in there. Like, no, we don't want to hear week. That's what you're referring to. Right, right. It's kind of a little vague. It's like one week he's saying, oh, yeah, he'll be ready to go.

24:42Well, if he, I think he said this like a couple weeks ago, if we had to play today, he would play. Right. And then he walked that back and said, well, we're not sure. It's kind of day-to-day, as you mentioned. So we will see. But at his age, and you think about the back, because he's not going to get hit until week one. Right. Right? And that's when you're really going to know how it's going to respond is after he gets hit and has to get up time and time again, then we'll find out. But if he's healthy, he's as good as it gets. and I don't think he gets enough credit for how talented he is with the other guys.

25:16Hall of Famer, right, would you say? I would say, yeah. You know, after they won that Super Bowl, I think he's got to be in there. His numbers speak for it, too.

25:22Rich Eisen:Right, and if anybody knows about the Detroit of it all, you know, you too. I mean, he arrived, you know, obviously after you departed, but I mean, you did have, you know, Barry's there. Yeah, I was lucky to turn around and hand it off to him oftentimes, But I certainly understood what he was going through in Detroit and getting beat up. I mean, the guy took a beating in Detroit for 12 years. And to be able to come back and still be playing, that's a credit in itself. I've got Rodney Peete here on the Rich Eisen Show. And again, we'll talk a little bit more about Kings Court in a second. Tell me a story about your son, RJ, please, here in Los Angeles, where he is a mainstay in the Dodgers organization.

26:08Rich Eisen:Would you mind telling this story that I think is important, neat in so many different ways? I appreciate you mention that. Yeah, RJ is, he's 27 now. And at three years old, RJ was diagnosed with autism. And he has a twin sister. And yet he struggled after that diagnosis. And, you know, we didn't know much about it at that time. And it wasn't really out there mainstream like it is now. and so we would fight to try to figure out what we do with him and schools in and out of schools in and out of treatment you know fast forward he started to get better and better and better and after high school we were like is he in a position to go to college we weren't sure and and we said let's just go see if he can just find a summer job and called around we went to different places and then finally um Lon Rosen who works at the Dodgers and Magic had just been a part of the ownership and we're good friends with him and said just come over and say hello and we went over there and he met the folks over there met Dave Roberts and met the guys in the clubhouse and said come on you want to you and he goes you know how to wash clothes and we're Holly and I were looking at you know wash clothes at home right but he said yes and uh here we are 10 years later man he's been with the Dodgers for 10 years now in the clubhouse and I'm almost gonna get teared up because they treat him like family they treat him like a little brother over there the guys that have been through there Justin Turner and Jock Peterson when he first got there and now Freddie Freeman and Mookie Betts they all treat him with love and he is it has changed his life and it's changed ours as well it's opened him up I mean you think the experience what just the responsibility of the role or or just feeling comfortable and finding people who love him for who he is I'm I'm because there's so many people as you know out there who have children who are autistic yeah and who have family members who are autistic and trying to figure out you know obviously the the symbol uh the puzzle piece is an apt symbol for for fighting autism or or at trying to find a cure for it or ways of dealing with it obviously um what do you think well listen everyone has a worth right everyone has a gift and and that doesn't matter if you're a child with special needs or an adult with special needs we all have a gift and it's about i think it's on us as society to kind of reach our hand out and try to find out what that gift is and you talk about it changed his life yes because rg was not a big social person but being around the dodgers forced him to be social and smile and interact with people and talk and engage and that respect it has changed his life also we used to have to drag him out of bed to go somewhere to get up to go to school or go anywhere he gets up on his own whether it's at five in the morning or he's got to go meet the team at midnight, he is up and he's doing his job and he's responsible.

29:18And it's given him something to look forward to. And it's really cool. And in that respect, it's really changed not only his life, the people around him, but certainly our life. It's a family.

29:29Rich Eisen:It's too bad the team's not winning. I know. I know. I know. My gosh. I know. Well, they're getting back into it. Hold on a second. Who cares about the regular season anyway, Rich? Let the Yankee fan in for a second. Is RJ deferring his salary to 50 years from now? Is that what he's doing? Is everybody the Dodgers do that? Don't hate. Don't hate. Well, my youngest son, you know, Susie Bean from New England, you know, he is a Celtic Patriot Yankee fan. How does that work? Well, I mean, I had to put my thumb on a scale here. First of all, when Tom Brady's winning all the championships for the Patriots, right, like I'm going to be, no, no, no.

30:14Rich Eisen:You need to stick with Dad watching Jet football. That didn't work. You know what I mean? That didn't work. You know what, I care about my kids. Rodney, that's why I got best dad ever right here on the desk. Case in point. You know, in the Celtics, when Charles Oakley was dragged out of Madison Square Garden, I'm like, I'm done with this team. Go root for the Celtics, fine. But with the Yankees, it's a different story. I mean, his older brother, Xander, was not that much into sports. So never a Red Sox? The Red Sox didn't bleed into it? Again, Cooper's my youngest son. My older son, my oldest son, is not that much into sports.

30:54Rich Eisen:But that said, when he was a baby, he was the firstborn. All the Red Sox onesies that came from her side of the family, they wound up somewhere else. And so the reason why I'm telling you all this is I brought Cooper, my youngest son, to game one of the World Series last year. Oh, really? And the only good thing about it at the end of the day is we got in our car fastest than pretty much 53 ,000 other people. The two of us and the rest of the Yankee fans were out the game. But you saw it. You saw it. Well, actually, we were down the right field line. The ball went right across our sight line. I cursed and I said, I think we should leave.

31:33Rich Eisen:This is what I said. But obviously the Dodgers are crushing it right now. And now the Lakers and the Dodgers are kind of... Yeah, they're family right now. They're family. How about that? How about that? Unbelievable. Rodney Peet here on the Rich Eisen Show. Tell me about Kings Court. How did you and Holly Robinson Peet get involved in all this? What about it? Well, Rich, like you and Susie, we've been lucky to be married for such a long time. We just celebrated our 30th anniversary. Yeah, thank you. Did you meet on Sesame Street? Or no? I'm that young. That's for her. Her dad worked there for...

32:08Rich Eisen:Her dad, yeah. She literally can't tell us how to get to Sesame Street. Yes, she can. Her wife, yes. Her dad introduced Big Bird and Oscar to the world, yes. The original Gordon on Sesame Street. That is correct. Yeah, so, yeah, no, they... Will Packer, who created the show. Oh, I know Will. Yeah. He's great people. Yeah, great, great, great people. It's too bad he's not as successful as the Dodgers. I know, I know. Too bad he doesn't work too hard, right? My gosh. Okay, so this is a Will Packer production. He came calling and said, you guys have been married, and we're creating this show. about started out with Queens Court.

32:38So three women and 24 guys would get together and they would try to figure out and find love. And it wasn't, you know, the thing about it was appealing for Holly and I, it wasn't the 21 year old that is on an island and it's all about, you know, whatever it's all about. We know it's about Ronnie.

33:01Rich Eisen:Survival. Yes, survival. That's what it's about. This is more about mature folks who either had been married before or hadn't been married, but in their 30s and 40s. And so really at that point in their life, they're looking for love and they know what they want. So it was appealing for us. And lucky enough, we were able to do it. And we did Queens for two years. And now the Kings are doing it. And it's a lot of fun. Yeah, bravo. Six o 'clock out in the West and nine out East. I mean, you can't tell me that Tyson Beckford needs help. Right? Tyson needs a lot of help. Rich. Why? How? Yeah, what's up?

33:36Because it's Tyson. He's gone through it, right? He's gone through the model phase where he had everything he wants. Yes. And from afar, you think that's what every man wants. I'll be honest. Up close, it seems like that would be the way I would look at it, too.

33:48Rich Eisen:I've never been up close, but I'm sorry. I don't mean to interrupt. Go on. I cannot confirm or deny that Tyson and I had several stories off camera. Okay. I cannot confirm that or deny that, Rich. Okay, I like it. But yeah, you would think that. He doesn't need any help with that, but he agreed to come on the show because it wasn't working for him. And he was going in and out of relationships and wanted to see, I guess, what was out there and what he was doing wrong and try to figure that out. And once, and you know this, once you're there for a week or so, you kind of forget about the cameras being around.

34:25You forget about being mic'd up and you say things. And unfortunately, we can't air all of it. But you say things and do things, you're like, does he know that the camera's on? Does he know that this is all being filmed? But it becomes real. It becomes real at some point, and that's the cool part about it. I love it.

34:43Rich Eisen:Rodney Pete here on The Rich Asks. Man, so many different questions to just ask you in our remaining time. Just go ahead and hit it. But what is it like to hand it off to Barry Sanders and have that as a front row seat and watch him go in the other direction? What is that like? Man, it was unbelievable. I will say it without hesitation, the best running back I've ever seen. You played for USC. I did. You've been around for a long time. I go through all of those, the Marcus Allens, even going back to the OJs and Ricky Bells and all those guys that I saw. Barry did things that would, first of all, would translate today, but were so unbelievable in a small area of space within the offensive and defensive line that he would do for a two-yard gain or a three-yard gain.

35:33You'd go, unbelievable. And then he would break one off. I used to pride myself on being a great deceptor as a quarterback and being able to fake and carry out my fakes. But handing off to Barry, I became the worst faking quarterback in the league because I would hand off and just turn around and watch him. And I'd get yelled at in the film session the next day. It's like, how are we going to ever run a bootleg or anything like that if you don't carry out the fake after you hand off? It's like, have you seen the guy run? Is that what your response would be? Oh, yeah, I got a front row seat. I'm not going to miss this.

36:08And he was absolutely unbelievable. Never said more than five words and never. I mean, it was so humble you thought it was an act. Right. You know, they never want to take credit. Obviously, you know, he never spiked it, always gave it to the ref. To this day, he's the same. To the point where we would take up collections for Barry to do something in the end zone when he scored. What? And he wouldn't take it. It got up to$10 ,000 at one point. Come on. Oh, yeah. The team would do what? The team would take up collections to give to Barry if he did a dance or did something demonstrative in the end zone.

36:49Did anybody make a suggestion for him? Everybody did. Everybody did. They wanted him to do the Billy White shoes. They wanted anything. You know, do a high knee Elmo Wright back in the day. I mean, just do something other than hand it to the ref, and he wouldn't take the bait. Not once.

37:07Rich Eisen:Not one time. And it got up to five figures at one point. Unbelievable. Which in today's money is six figures. Hey, I'll do whatever you want me to do. Give me that. We weren't making what they're making right now, Ritz, So$10 ,000 at that point was good. I'm going to bring you down to my level before I let you go, Rodney. And so you're going to do your radio show? I am. Okay. Fred Rogan, local Fred Rogan in town. And I've been around some time, and I've met Fred on multiple occasions. So you know. You know what I've got to go through on a regular basis. Well, I kind of used to know. I don't know anymore.

37:40Rich Eisen:Yeah, you know. This is something that maybe you can talk about later on. Chris Brockman doesn't even want to look up right now because he knows what's coming. Oh, he does what's coming. Because years ago, I'm going to the Super Bowl, and I saw Fred. And, you know, I saw him, and I just thought, you know, what's Fred, you know, said recently? And I'll come up, and I'll give him some crap, right, for it, you know, because we were at the same gate going to the same Super Bowl. So I call up his Twitter feed, and look at the bottom right there. Fred Rogan has blocked you. What? And that was years ago.

38:21Rich Eisen:And I had everybody here check it out today. It still stands to this day. I do not know what I did or said. Oh. I have no idea what's up with Fred. So I don't know what's up with Fred because he's blocked me, Rodney. Rich. Is he a freebie of people? There are many gifts, and they don't always come on Christmas, Rich. This is a gift for me. I love this. I'm giving you a topic of conversation for today's program. We might do three hours on this today. I don't know. I mean, is Fred a frequent blocker of people? This is the first time. No, I know Fred's got some people that he's rubbed the wrong way over the years.

39:04I have no beef. And people have rubbed him. I'm a Chris, TJ, Mike.

39:08Rich Eisen:Am I? Do I have beef or am I on personal? I will. I have no beef. Only Ohio State. That's the only. Oh, that's true. That's it. That's it, though. That's some other. That's natural, though. That's a natural thing. Yeah. That's understandable. This can have an explanation. This one, I don't get it. I'm going to have to get to the bottom of this. I'm giving you something that's called content, which we all need in the world. You know what they say? Pass a baton. You just did that. I love that. I love that. Yeah, that's what I'm talking about. It's a relay right now. I know. I mean, I got the Heisman from Fred Rogan.

39:44Rich Eisen:And you got it from Barry Sanders. it's our lives this is great okay so it's a mystery there's not like there's never been a moment in a commercial break no my name's come up for whatever reason and fred's like man can't stand that guy i blocked him no okay all right all right now should i ambush it okay this is no this is your handy i will not tell you how to prepare him for it i want a real organic answer Well, again, it's fine because he won't know because he's blocked me. At this point, this is one big, shadowy conversation. I think it's something like you're coming out of a break and you're just like, so I was on the Rich Eisen show this morning.

40:28Rich Eisen:And then you see where the conversation takes you. I can't stand that. And then he says in response. Caused me to take my thumb and hit a button. Right. I don't know. You know what I mean? I like that. You put Mutombo on me. I have no idea. Okay, see. It's still a mystery as I send Rob to Pete out the door with some fat content for today's program. Good to see you, sir. You too. Say hi to Holly, please, for sure. King's Court airs Sundays, 9 p.m. on Bravo, the next day on Peacock, which means you can see it right here on Roku.

42:16Rich Eisen:I always like to think that I'm His most favorite person in the room But when the Vince Lombardi trophy Is sitting between the two of us I think I lose out Michael Irvin, right? I think I lose out to this baby, right? It's so funny you start with this Because I'm going to tell you something, man When I was playing I made a pact that I would never go to a Super Bowl Until I play in the Super Bowl Every guest that comes here, they're going to get Super Bowl questions. That's why I always say I would never go to a Super Bowl until after I play in a Super Bowl, so I would not have people like Rich Eisen asking me questions that I cannot answer.

42:54Now, what do you want to ask, Rich? Because I've prepared to answer since I won three of these things.

42:59Rich Eisen:So what was it like picking this trophy up for the first time? It was the greatest thing, and it really was, Rich. It really was the greatest thing. Do you remember the circumstances? Oh, my God, man. First of all, you got to go back and think about, like, we were 1-15. We were 3-13, 1-15. When you're 3-13 and 1-15 Cleveland Browns, I know you don't think there's any chance that you will ever lay a hold of something like this. So to go from those days to coming in 92 and winning that Super Bowl and actually somebody handing you that trophy, the most incredible thing, most incredible feeling in the world.

43:36Rich Eisen:Did you ever step in when you heard that Jimmy and Jerry were not doing well? Or your station wasn't that in life at that point in time? I just didn't think anything would happen, Rich. I really didn't. I was like, are you joking? You know how hard it is doing Super Bowls. And you have a formula that's working. And then when it happened, it was like, oh, my God. Like, you know, I should have done this. Maybe I should have talked to him. I should have tried this. I should have tried that. Jerry Jones, I'm telling you, that's the one thing. I'll never forget Jerry Jones telling me that when I was negotiating with him.

44:05and I was saying, you know, I'll go to Cincinnati. And I was just talking, trying to get my monies up. I said, I'll go to Cincinnati. You can get car pickings over here and let's see what happens. And Jerry said to me then, Jerry said, Michael, you know, when I see you, I see Michael Irvin and the Dallas Cowboys. He said, I kind of see it like Magic Johnson and the Lakers. He said, what is magic without the Lakers?

44:27Rich Eisen:And what are the Lakers without the magic? He said, you guys, they belong together, just like you and the Cowboys. He said, Michael, the best way I can tell you, if a bomb hit Valley Ranch today, that's where we practice. And blew everything up. Everybody, everything. When the smoke clears, baby, me and you, we going to still be here. So we might as well work this deal out right now. That's what he said to you? I promise y 'all. This dude is a fool. This dude is a fool. He had me laughing as he was telling me no about my money.

45:01Rich Eisen:That's why you're in the Hall of Fame together.

45:07Rich Eisen:I miss Irv. We just saw him last week. It was good. It was great seeing him. Oh, at the Cowboys premiere. The Netflix premiere, yeah. I love that. That's awesome. I miss him. Well, you say it like you can't call him. Well, he doesn't answer his phone. That's true. Then try to leave a message. It's like your voicemail box is full. You try to reach Michael Irvin. I'll call him right now. Well, you need to be crazy. Call him right now. In all honesty, the number of times where I've needed to reach him, and it's been impossible to get him, and then Susie reaches out and he answers the phone right away.

45:48Rich Eisen:Nowhere you stand. Well, I mean, he did sit on her side of the wedding. That is true. That is true. On a day where, God bless it, I didn't have a job, so thank God I got married. Yeah. What an asshole. Rich, good job. Welcome back to the Rich Eisen Show Radio Network. I just worked blue in time. Just in time. That's why I'm a professional. I'm a professional. Right before we got back on the radio. Yep, you got it. Right before I became your Marshawn Lynch nightmare. I can't believe you called me that. I'm back on the Rich Eisen Show Radio Network. I can't believe you said Rich is talking about not having a job on the matter.

46:24Rich Eisen:On your wedding day, Susie, you should call in right now so I can ask why did you go through it? That actually was a good question. It was a terrible question. Stop it. Thank you, Mike. The one expert on relationships in this room. Rich, I'm with you. That was out of pocket. Out of pocket? I can tell you all about bad relationships. Out of pocket? Like Steve Young on a scrum. Fran Tarkenton on a scrum. I was trying to prove a point about how strong your love was. All right. Everybody calm down. Can I say something, though, with Rodney Pete being here? Yes, sir. That was cool for me because he was a reason a kid, you guys always crack on me about the number of teams I like, but he's the reason a kid from the middle of Pennsylvania start paying attention to USC back in the late 80s.

47:11We didn't have ES, you know, back then. We didn't have anything but Sports Illustrated.

47:15Rich Eisen:And I saw a black quarterback on the cover. He went to USC and I was like, oh, OJ went there, Marcus Allen. So start paying attention to USC after that. But like, so that was really cool. And, of course, the story about his son working with the Dodgers. That's amazing. Yeah. Thanks to Sean Mitchell for keying us in on all that stuff. You know, Sean's got a big heart, but anytime we could talk about his Dodgers, I'm sure he's very happy about that. You mean our Dodgers. Oh, my God. You know what? I knew that was coming. How come? Because, again, I saw – excuse me. I was sitting in Spain watching the reel created by Jake Culp of the Rich Eisen Show.

47:58Rich Eisen:Jake, shout out. Let's give Jake a shout out. He's the one who puts all the reels together from the Venon agency. What's up, Brendan? I'm shouting everyone out. It doesn't matter. Fred Rogan won't know. Come on, man.

48:17Rich Eisen:But I'm watching this reel of O'Shea Jackson Jr. sitting in this chair. Uh-huh. Okay. And Cube on the program. And I thought to myself, the first face I'm seeing asking a question isn't O'Shea Jackson Jr., which is the point of making this real. And I was thinking of making a note talking to Jake about it. The first person I see is this Jamal. No, no, actually, he gave... No, excuse me, stop. You didn't see the real. I'm talking about the real on Instagram. I reposted it. You're the first person who's asking a question of Cube. Okay, you. I mean, it should be. And I saw that, and my first thought is like, why is that happening?

48:58Rich Eisen:And then I heard him talking about I was the Yankee fan there, watching you rehearse, you know, doing the Del Tufo passive-aggressive, I'm a guy who's behind the scenes. I'm a places. I'm a Fox guy. It's the World Series. I ain't making this stuff up. That's the soap text. I'm going to hit the button. Get the assumption. Don't deny it. Oh, I see you in rehearsal. I can get you selfies with Lady Gaga, all that sort of guy. And I was just outraged that you didn't call him out on being a Yankee fan. He did. He actually did. You smirked. No, we did. He smirked. He got cut. It didn't make the real.

49:37Rich Eisen:It was unethical. It wasn't right. It was wrong. We were giving him lots of grief. What the hell? Yeah, exactly. Yeah, we each got our own moment to chop it up with Q. The Hyundai Getaway Sales event is going on right now. Get deals so right it almost feels wrong. Don't miss out. Visit your local Hyundai dealer today. That wraps up our number one of our radio program. Steve Tasker is coming up shortly. We're still here on Roku, which means now I can curse you out, too. Stop. Come on. I'm just going down the line. I'm shouting people out and I'm cursing them out, depending on how I feel. And I feel great these days.

50:12Rich Eisen:You should.

50:17Do we both hit that same time? You guys are like, you guys do the same. Check this out.

50:21Rich Eisen:Check this out. There you go. Austin Karp, who writes for Sports Business Journal. Apparently, this Rich Eisen guy is a future if he wants to host SportsCenter. My Monday night, post-Monday night football SportsCenter. My first one in 20 years. Moved the needle a little bit here. Well, speaking of that, 67 % above this from year to year. Last time I was SportsCenter, was this much, was this viewed? was two months ago, and then, thank goodness I beat myself from 22 years ago. Well, that would have been a little bit bad. Do we want to talk about what Front Office Sports is reporting? What are you talking about?

50:56Rich Eisen:You're going to headline periodic special editions of SportsCenter? Okay. According to an ESPN spokesman? Front Office Sports is breaking news to me. Okay. I'll do more. I just don't know when the next time we're going to do it. No, I've got a lot of jobs. I understand. I mean, I understand. Is that what they're reporting? Yeah. Okay. From an ESPN spokesman. Okay. You're in. The company's saying it. Okay. I guess I'm doing it. Rich, come on. You definitely are. This is great. I bet on it. I'm kidding. Although somebody sent me this link because you know I'm not on X. Marchand saying, oh, it's after a Monday night football game.

51:38Rich Eisen:I get it, Andrew. It's great. And it has nothing to do with anything else going on. And by the way, that fourth quarter was so scintillating. I'm sure it gave me a big fat audience. I mean, with Joe. They're literally breaking down headlines of preseason week two. I know. During the fourth quarter. They were talking about Micah. And that was my question. I was going to ask Troy. I'm like, well, now I'm not gonna. Literally just headlines. Come on, Andrew. Don't hate. Just congratulate. Just one little bit, man. Yeah, Burke Magnus, Rich. Oh, Burke. And he was thrilled by the widespread acclaim.

52:11Rich Eisen:Oh. Quote, that was pretty cool. I woke up to a bushel of text messages and emails. A bushel. A bushel. Now, would you look that up? That's more than solid in terms of an amount. Oh, a bushel. Yeah. It's better than a handful. How many is a bushel? Don't you think? I mean, just if you're talking about how many texts there are. Well, according to the metrics here, one bushel is 9.3 liquid gallons. Of texts? That's a lot of texts. I think that's a lot. How many pounds in a bushel? Pounds, baby. Pounds. A bushel of wheat is 60 pounds. That's wild. I mean, just the amount of text, that would be. feels like a lot.

52:46Rich Eisen:What's up, Berk? You got it. We got it. We got it. Let's keep doing it. All right, I'll do it live.

52:57You know when you're locked in, focused, and fearless. Welcome to the WNBA. Your vision narrows. You can't look away. Every assist,

53:08Rich Eisen:every stop, every logo three. From beyond the logo. No! Every did you see that moment? You bet! What records are going to be broken this season? All of it right here. Lock in. It's the WNBA on ESPN all season long.
