In short

The Rich Eisen Show, Hour 2, focuses on the Arizona Cardinals’ early-season offensive problems after a 2-2 start, then pivots to Steve Young’s analysis of quarterback play and several NFL teams (Russell Wilson, Justin Herbert, Lions, Chiefs, 49ers, Baker Mayfield, Cowboys). It also includes live segments on Ryder Cup updates and a Giants/Jackson Dart discussion.

Guests (backgrounds)

Pro Football Hall of Famer Steve Young (elite NFL quarterback; discusses QB development, rule changes, and team fit). Also referenced: Kevin Pollak (actor/comedian; joins later). Phone callers include “Fetty in Italy” and “Larry in Albuquerque,” plus a Giants fan (“Khalil”).

Key claims

Cardinals’ issues are “too late” execution and drops; Kyler Murray says he needs Marvin Harrison Jr. despite a first-half interception moment. Steve Young argues shortened preseason reduces offensive sophistication, defense improves faster, and rule changes expanded QB landing spots. He defends Russell Wilson’s efficiency but questions Denver’s lack of communication when struggling.

Notable examples

Cardinals’ comeback after trailing 20-6 vs San Francisco; Harrison’s dropped passes and later touchdown catch; Chad Ryland’s missed landing-zone attempt leading to a field goal setup. Young cites Daniel Jones’ 3-0 start, Herbert’s improved line-of-scrimmage threat, Lions’ statement win, and 49ers’ 3-0 despite injuries (no Kittle/Purdy/Bosa/Iuke).

1:19Rich Eisen:Our YouTube channel. Subscribe at youtube.com slash richeisenshow and you'll never miss a moment. Now, on with the show. This is the Rich Eisen Show. And the kick is good! The Seahawks win the game! Live from the Rich Eisen Show studio in Los Angeles. Do you think we've seen the last of Russell Wilson? Honestly, I hope we have. I'm not done. Earlier on the show, NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero. Coming up, Pro Football Hall of Famer Steve Young. Actor and comedian Kevin Pollak. And now, it's Rich Eisen. Our number two of the Rich Eisen show is on the air. Tom Pellicero, we just said goodbye to him.

2:05Rich Eisen:And now Steve Young's going to be joining us shortly. What's more likely in a moment? Kevin Pollak in Studio R3. It's just always a dynamite time whenever he joins us as well. 844-204-RICH is the number to dial. We'll take a phone call in a moment. Started the show by talking about how Seattle could make the playoffs at 3-1. A great start. And if they do make it, who would be off it? Washington could be one of those teams. It's Marcus Mariota again for them. It was announced an hour through while we were on there, hour number one by Dan Quinn, that it's a second straight week that Jaden Daniels will be out.

2:42Rich Eisen:And it does look like no Terry McLaurin either. He's now officially called week to week there. And we'll see how that works out. The Arizona Cardinals are two and two. They started two and oh, they've now lost two in a row. at the final gun by a field goal from their opponent after, in their case in San Francisco, taking the lead late. Last night, they tied the game late after falling down by the score of 20-6, two unanswered touchdowns, and then Chad Ryland, man, didn't get the ball in the landing zone, which meant all Sam Donald needed was two and a half first downs and set things up for the game-winning field goal.

3:33Rich Eisen:And now Arizona's two and two, leading Kyler Murray to once again, yet another year in Arizona to talk about why something is wrong with the offense where they're not on tilt with somebody like himself and Marvin Harrison Jr. and Trey McBride, a guest of ours a few weeks ago, who is one of the most prolific pass catchers in the National Football League, just to name a few. Now, I understand James Conner's out for the season and they're to the next two men up in their running back depth chart, but this is what he had to say, Kyler. We just got to make more plays. We got to show up and be ready to go.

4:16You know what I mean? It's like we're just loading. You know what I mean? and it's taking too long. You know, obviously the resilience of the team, you love to see it and you feel like give yourself a chance to win the game at the end. But it's just too late.

4:32Rich Eisen:2-2, by the way, unless the Colts beat the Rams and go to 4-0 here up the road on Sunday, 2-2 will be last place in the NFC West. Dang. Even if the 49ers lose to Jacksonville. so that would make it a last place positioning after four weeks despite splitting their first four games their next home game is next week against Tennessee and a lot is focused right now on Marvin Harrison Jr. who dropped one on a wide open space he can't get more wide open than he was in Santa Clara last week when he just dropped it he had another drop early on in this game with a bobble over the middle that led to an interception after Murray hit him in the hands with a dime now Marvin did snatch one out of the air high pointing it for a touchdown that was sick started the comeback and it's exactly what why we were talking about Marvin Harrison Jr.

5:40Rich Eisen:being one of the best collegiate players to be drafted where he was rightfully by Arizona. So a lot of question after the game to Kyler about Marvin Harrison Jr. You always say that, that you have the confidence in him no matter what. That seemed like a difficult moment to have the confidence in him in the first half after the interception. What in that moment gave you the ability to keep going back to him? I need him. You know what I'm saying? He needs me. I need him. You know, this is a team sport. Four-quarter game. And I understand he's not coming out of the game. You know what I'm saying?

6:11I don't want him to come out of the game, so we've got to get this going. And that's really just what it is. Just conversations on the sideline, keeping his confidence up, and, again, the other receivers and everybody around him. We're all in it together.

6:28Rich Eisen:That's a good answer, by the way. That is a good answer. Because he's not going anywhere. I mean, he's Marvin Harrison Jr. I will say this. I'm not worried about him. so yeah what i'm doing with brear on a text chain and don we're a money manager of the stars to ohio state hunks in my life um it's a bit but it's a great bit i did benjamin last night i did not play a uh 66 yards and a score this here's why i'm not worried about him okay he's supremely talented you can see the talent my god is he a physical beast right you can also look in his eyes through that helmet it just seems like something you know what my my counsel to him my counsel to him would be with tim tebow when he came on the show to counsel arch manning just go back to the times when you just love football just try try and channel that okay yeah try and channel being a kid and how good you are and it's only a matter of time that that that high point snatch was like grown ass man material in the end zone and his reaction afterward man he was he took a You can tell like a weight was lifted off of him.

7:34Rich Eisen:Of course, because he, I mean, that dropped ball last week was absurd. I saw this stat. The first 20 games of his career, he's now played 20 games. His dad, Marvin Sr., had 1 ,026 receiving yards and nine touchdowns through the first 20 games of Marvin Jr.'s career, despite everything we're talking about. uh 1027 yards and nine touchdowns he's one yard better than his dad same number of touchdowns his dad we all know what happened with his dad wow that's cool okay i just hope for his sake that kyler is like peyton right which is you know a very tall order um home for tennessee at indianapolis that's going to be daniel jones versus kyler murray home for green bay then a buy at dallas on a monday night at seattle for a big time game there there there there are some Some winnable games here for them if they are anything like what we saw towards the end of the game, being there in San Francisco, having that win at New Orleans home for Carolina, our opponents that they should beat, right?

8:47Rich Eisen:We'll see what happens with Arizona. They're talented enough to put together for Jonathan Gannon a winning season and then make some hay. But the mistakes that you make, you know, the drops, the not putting the ball in the landing zone. Having Mack Jones march down the field on you at the end of a game. It'll cost you. Do you guys ever see those two talk? Who? Kyler and Marvin. Never. I remember at one point he dropped a pass and they just walked by each other. Like normally you would see a QB and a wide receiver kind of engage. I didn't unless I missed this. I didn't see any of that. Yeah. And that's been a knock on Kyler leadership, body language, all that, all those types of things.

9:31Rich Eisen:I don't know. I don't know, man, Marvin. I don't know. As you know, I was ready to put him in the hall of fame as a sophomore. Something just seems off. Dude. Everyone was saying, you know, he was the top pick in the draft when he was a sophomore. Yeah. You know, but I'm not concerned about him at all. Even though I'm texting certain somebodies that, so-called greatest college receiver ever. Never won the Big Ten championship. Fetty in Italy, you're here on the Rich Eisen Show. Let's take his phone call. Fetty. Good to chat with you again, Fetty. What's going on in Italy? Hi. Everything is fine.

10:09Rich Eisen:I just read that you are going to be the voice of the Broncos and Jets game. That's true. And I'm going to be there. And I was wondering if you all are going to be in London. We are going to send the show there. There's plans to do it, but not for Jets Broncos, sir. Maybe the following week. Oh. Yeah. Well, I'm going to be there on the Monday, too. Okay. And I'd love to meet you at the game. Okay. I'll be the guy in the suit on the field. Just make your way as close as you can there, and I'll come find you. You find me, I'll find you. How does that sound? I'll be the guy in the Bronco shirt with the Italian flag.

10:54Rich Eisen:Ah, yes. Can't imagine there's going to be too many of those. Yeah, Fetty, that would be a name to remember. What's the Broncos jersey you're going to be wearing? Mine is going to be Peter Manning. My girlfriend has a bonix. Ah, nice. Okay, I will look for the handsome couple wearing 18 and 10. With the Italian flag. Very good. with the Italian flag. Love it. That's what's so... Thank you, sir, Fetty in Italy. That's what's so great about the international series, man. That is cool. Did you hear that the NFL has announced a five-game over a three-game stretch? A five-game over a three-year stretch in Rio.

11:27Rich Eisen:That's cool. So going back to Brazil, but a little north of Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro. Blame it on Rio. Let's go. Maybe we'll get the invite this year. That's a good movie. No, it's not. but it's a movie with Rio in the title. My friend of mine was in that. Okay. I mean, you could just go with Rio. Who's your friend that was in that? Which friend? Which friend isn't blaming it on Rio? Because it's old, man. I know. I know. I know which friend. Which friend? Demi Moore. Demi Moore is a friend of yours? That's the first time I've heard that. Are you serious? Well, she was married to Ashton, Rich.

12:03Rich Eisen:Oh, now I'm putting two and two together. We were roommates, Rich. You and Demi Moore were roommates? Yeah, we all live together. You know this. No, I don't. Our ESPN Disney Plus family doesn't know this, but yes. Very good. Michael Caine in that movie. Mr. Mrs. Venture, Mrs. Matt Williams was in that film as well. Look that one up. Forget the actress's name. I just remember her sitting in the wives section at the 2001 World Series Game 7, crying her eyes out in the eighth inning because they were about to lose the World Series to the Yankees. Yada, yada, yada. the Yankees lose in the ninth inning.

12:41Rich Eisen:Michelle Johnson. Michelle Johnson is happy and then I go into the locker room and Susie gets flipped to baseball with a New York Yankees phone number on it. Hey! Joe Bologna was in that move. Not good. For me. Never knew that Blame It On Rio would be brought up here. I mean, you never know what I might say. Do you know Michael Caine? I don't. I wish. Me too. Alright, let's take a... Michael Caine. Michael Caine Michael Caine okay let's let's go to we do the rest of the show Larry in Albuquerque what's up Larry Larry hey nice to be on your show Rich what's up long time listener okay great I'm driving driving to Salt Lake City right now okay and listening to you it helps a lot awesome you know keeps us awake and everything else oh good I was wondering if we can get any Ryder Cup updates I haven't heard anything on the Ryder Cup today okay Thanks very much, Larry.

13:38Rich Eisen:Your wish is our command. Do we have like a... Do we have Ryder Cup music? It's not a music. Just give us the... I guess, is it a breaking news or something like that? Oh, you're going to go with the birds. Just go with the birds. Go with the birds. Okay. All right. After the first... So we're doing four ball today. Europe is up three to one. It was an absolute ass-kicking in the morning. It's two guys playing. Yeah. On each side. That's what he means by four ball. That's what I mean by four ball. It's four ball. Not clue. Not laughing at the birds. He's so stupid. I swear to God. You never know.

14:15Rich Eisen:You're laughing at the birds. Oh, yeah. The king of that's what she said humor is saying it's the birds making him laugh. I promise you I'm laughing at the birds. After he says four ball. Wow. All right. This is not the update Larry's looking for as he's driving. John Rahm and Sepp Strucker are one up here in the afternoon session. The other two matches are even, but Europe has a 3-1 lead. Okay, very good. Thank you very much. Everybody's up to it. The crowd, it looks beautiful out in New York today after the rain on Thursday. Bethpage is rocking. It looks cool. Some of the video that I saw during the commercial break is the European team was laughing on the first tee of the four ball when the European fans that are there at Bethpage Blackboard chanting, is this a library?

14:55Rich Eisen:Because it was so quiet. They definitely have taken the home field advantage that was supposed to be going down with the rowdy New York crowd. Here's the whole thing. They're showing like Keegan Bradley looking so concerned, the Ryder Cup captain. Every year, every Ryder Cup, the Ryder Cup captain drives around with an earpiece and some system where the earpiece is connected to what looks like a walkie-talkie. Can you help me with this thing? Can we not get some sort of better system? It looks like Ray Floyd used the same system back in the 70s. I don't even know if it was a Ryder Cup captain.

15:33Rich Eisen:Interceptible foldback. Thank you very much. Oh, that's an IFB. IFB. Thank you. So did you know that's what IFB stood for? I don't, maybe not. Well, whatever. He's got the earpiece in and it's connected to, and he's just standing there. And everybody blames the Ryder Cup captain for like what happens. It's just like. He picks the team, right? He picks the team. He picks half the team. But what is, but he picks who plays with whom, right? Exactly. The matchups. Oh, and it's such a bad pairing. Bad pairing. Why is it a bad pairing sometimes? Just the result? Are we playing the result? or just guys don't play well with each other.

16:05Rich Eisen:Also, strengths and weaknesses of your teammates. Like, if you're playing a four-ball situation, you want a great driver of the ball with a great iron player. So you want to really match things up in that way. But these guys get to the Ryder Cup because they're great drivers and great iron players, right? They're generally the top 30 players in the world. Yeah. The whole thing gets so parsed to the point where just play golf. Like, is it Ken Bradley's fault that we're down 3-1? No. Make putts. Make your putts. Make your shots. Hit it on the green. Let's go. Give me a shot. The shot. I mean, Rory and Tommy Fleetwood absolutely smoked more Akawa today.

16:39Rich Eisen:Yeah, and that's Keegan Bradley's fault, right? I guess. I don't know. None of this makes sense. Just play golf. Make Michael Jordan the captain. It'd be way cooler. Wouldn't that be great? I think it'd be way better. And so Keegan Bradley can play. Right. He's there. Mike is there. Just make him the captain. Make him the captain. Go figure that. Made him a captain. Rory almost drove the green on one. Hey, you know whose fault that is? Keegan Bradley? i never understand this rider cup stuff man it has a little holier than thou vibe you think so you think but it's fun it's great it is fun it's really cool you know you know you're sure you're sure for these guys individually rory's one of my favorite players but now i want him to just have the worst 18 hole stretch i need them to win because i'm going to london in two weeks i need to walk around with my head held high i can't sit around and start to you know explain away keegan Bradley's decision making.

17:27All right.

17:28Rich Eisen:It is about me. 844-204-RICH. Number to dial. Steve Young's going to join us. We're pushing what's more likely to our number three. Fantastic. And then Kevin Pollak's going to join us. I think Kevin likes one. Kevin told me in the past he checks out our YouTube channel, What's More Likely, and stuff like that. So it's fitting that we're going to play that when he's in our green room. Niner fan also. He is that. He is that. That makes two in a row. We had Dan Soder yesterday, Kevin Pollak today, and by the way, Steve Young's about to join us. Look at us. 844-204-RICH, number to dial here. Steve Young in a moment.

One more time, gusto.com slash rich. the rich eyes and show podcast back on the rich eyes and show you're on espn radio presented by progressive insurance joining us here is hall of famer steve young let's everybody raise our level of play here let's class the classic man is here what's up steve how are you 14 ball the 14 ball how are you steve young what's going on man i'm doing good buddy how are you i'm doing better for seeing you on the screen um what what's uh what's your opinion so far of quarterback play through the first three weeks of this season steve you mean the you mean the september preseason right that's what it is right is that is that are we are we seeing the effects of a shortened preseason um yet for another season in september steve in the in the effort to make the game safer in the last 10 years it's essentially reduced the amount of time coaches and players can be together and so the sophistication goes goes down and and if your agency is as wide open as it's ever been and they limit you know and then and then obviously when you can get into preseason the true preseason in in august no one plays and so really you're just throwing a gut In April, you throw 50 guys together or by June.

21:45And then you get a couple of three-day retreats, and then you go play some ball. And so compared to, and I don't want to be the guy, get off my lawn, but in the old days where you really spent the whole year with your coaches grinding through five years of tape and refining the aspects of your offense and the sophistication. And that's why, I mean, you know, Tom Brady said it best when I saw him right at the end of his career. He's like, you know, what's the difference? And he says, well, you know, the flats are always open, the middle of the field is unpatrolled, and no one can touch me. That's overstatement, of course.

22:26It's conflated. But, you know, and so then football, he asked me about quarterback play. It's just defense is much easier to get good at than offense. offense has much more technical parts of it and it's tender, tedious work. And so the offense will always lag. That's why you see better offense towards the end of the year and, and better defense early. And so, yeah. So what do I see so far? Some, I mean, the great teams are, are showing and the really bad teams are showing. And then there's 25 teams in the middle that just like, please make me two and two in October. So I can, you know, figure out who we are.

23:07Rich Eisen:Right. That's what it looks like right now. And it appears to be with Daniel Jones off to a 3-0 start, yet another quarterback that needed six, seven years to potentially find the right spot. Or we can't already anoint him, if you will, the next Baker, next Goff, next maybe even Sam Darnold here, Steve. Rich, I mean, again, I just I mean, let's just talk about it for a second. Sure. before the rule changes in the past the old days i felt like there was five really great places for quarterbacks in the league yes i think that it's expanded now because the great innovative minds of what i call the big four that when the rule changes for safety and about eight nine years ago leaned into the new space that was created by defenses not being able to launch their bodies of people, the Sean McVeighs, the Kyle Shanahan's, the Andy Reid's and the Sean Payton's all leaned in.

24:07And then you think about that tactical advantage that they had for a few years. And then what happened is their coaches, because of the way they coach is kind of an abundant perspective, like I'll give you everything I got so you can go get a job and dominate. So what happens around the league is all those that coat, those coaching trees flood the league. and so the tactical advantage goes away because everyone's doing the same thing. But it's still not everybody. I think there's probably 15 places that are awesome for quarterbacks. Five are super awesome. And what you're seeing is in the past, there were so few places great for quarterbacks that a guy would come in, he'd get mauled, a rookie, high draft points on a bad team, and he looks like he sucks, he's terrible, and they just end up, they can't get back on the track.

24:56in today's game there's more places where quarterbacks can find out how good they are which is the gift right it's like i will let you see how good you really are and uh and you're seeing the sam darnolds and the mac jones and the and the daniel jones find homes where they can find out how good they are and by definition where they were wasn't allowing

25:17Rich Eisen:that that's just a fact steve young here on the rich eisen show and then there's i guess somebody like Russell Wilson, who's now watching Jackson Dart get the start, just two starts after throwing for 450 yards, but that was, you know, sandwiched in between two losses where things looked brutal. Your fellow Hall of Famer, Tony Gonzalez, last night on Prime Video said Russ has played himself out of the Hall of Fame. Where do you stand on Russ as a quarterback right now and where he stands, Steve? Russ is, I think for, you know, he was, he was, you know, there's, there's, there's different ways to look at Russ and some of it's, you know, how everyone feels about him and then watching him play football.

26:11And is he genuine? Is he disingenuous? Is he, you know, all those kind of, and I just, I'm a believer in Russ. I think he's been an amazing football player. And whether it's going to be Hall of Fame or not, I'll leave that to the voters. But from my perspective, how he plays the game is pretty efficient and pretty smart and pretty effective. Now, can he do it all? No. If you look at what Josh Allen does or Lamar Jackson or, you know, these guys are just fully loaded. Superman. And so, like, if you want to compare him, like, he doesn't have that. He's never had that. But what he gets out of what he has, I got to tip my cap to it.

26:52And now as he kind of, you know, runs around the league, you run into places where it's not that great. And now the coach needs to save his job. So he's going to, you know, bench him. And so, like, it's okay. And then Russ's play. Russ, whatever, what Tony said, what baffled me was in Denver. it baffled me that for a full season Russ sent up no flares no smoke signals that hey look I'm struggling but I'm still fine I'm still me and I think that's maybe what he's referring to is like I was I could not figure out that whole season what happened to Russ Wilson and why would it why would it just devolve and why couldn't he let me know just kind of between the two of us secretly as I watched him play, hey, I got this figured out.

27:45And I think that's maybe what Tony's referring to.

27:48Rich Eisen:Steve Young here on the Rich Eisen Show. What do you think about Herbert? Has he entered the chat here, elite quarterback, already there in your minds, like what he's doing right now, Steve? He always was. He was a kept man. He was in a place that wasn't great for quarterbacks. And because he's so earnest and he wants to be great, that he was doing the Andrew Luck thing, Just throwing his body around, trying to get something accomplished to be good enough. He knew, I could be elite. I can be in the Patrick Mahomes-Josh Allen conversation. And I just need some help. And I think Jim Harbaugh has given him some help.

28:24I think it's positive. And I think he's unleashed a little bit. Because you can see that Justin is now recognizing that my talent needs to threaten the line of scrimmage every play. I don't do it very often, but I need to threaten it. And he won games already this year with his legs, and he can do that. And that's the game today. That's the missing piece that he can now unleash. He was threatening the line of scrimmage when he made one of the greatest throws you've ever seen last week. And so I'm a huge believer in Justin Herbert. I've said this many times from an artist's perspective, from a throwing motion kind of appreciation.

29:07uh uh i i think he has one of the most beautiful throwing motions in history so i'm a i'm not only a believer i'm an admirer and uh and i think that justin there's no there's no place he can't go if he has the proper help and that's true for all great quarterbacks you need the proper help

29:25Rich Eisen:and jared goff uh with the win on monday and i don't know if you saw this stat steve young he and Dan Campbell just surpassed you and Mooch for the second best win percentage in prime time, trailing Peyton Manning and Jim Caldwell. And I'm wondering if you think the Lions... Why are you saddling us with the coaches? No. Just tell them, what's the total? Why are you trying to bring me down? Oh, beautiful. No, Steve, that made my day. It might even make game day morning on Sunday morning. I have a feeling we're going to mark the time code here. You're right. My bad. You, you alone, you stand alone in that regard.

30:15Rich Eisen:So, so that was my way of getting into whether you think golf and the lions and Dan Campbell have shown, we got this thing with Johnny Morton, offensive coordinator here three weeks in. We're good. We're just like the same team over the last three years. Prolific on offense, smart all around. We're still the Lions. You're kind of wondering right now on that front. Yeah, no, I thought that was a statement game. I mean, early season, preseason, September, on Monday night, and going on the road. I just thought it was a statement from, because the good teams are good. The Ravens are still a very good team.

30:50I don't care what you say. And so, to me, there are two really good teams that are ready to play football in September, and I just, I thought that was expansive. I thought it was unique. I thought it was innovative. I thought it was bold. I thought it was strong. I mean, it was like all of it. So, yeah, right now, it feels without injury, like, put them in the mix, right in the mix, and then please tell me that if you get up by 17 in the championship game that you'd kick a field goal, just please tell me you'll do that.

31:18Rich Eisen:I don't know, man. You never know. No, just play it. No, no, no. You never know. I refuse to watch unless you tell me that's going to be the case. Because I cannot watch. I cannot watch self-destruction again. I can't. I can't because of hubris. I can't see it happen again. It's too painful. Well, where do you stand on the Chiefs, too, since the Ravens play the Chiefs, Steve? It looks like, I don't know, either they're missing Rice and Xavier Worthy, or the Chiefs are still, once again, fumbling for the light switch on offense and are still not yet putting it together with their all-world quarterback tight end combination.

31:56Rich Eisen:Steve, where do you stand on that subject? To me, it's all up front. Like, if they're going to be at least average up front, if not above average, then all the rest of it is just them working it out. You watch it last year. They won a bunch of games when they could have lied. They could have been, I don't know, who knows what they could have been. As long as they just get in, they just didn't get in the tournament. and tell me that Patrick can be protected reasonably because that's kind of what matters. And then people getting healthy, of course, and all the rest of it and getting the help he needs.

32:29But I just, I don't know, for me, until proven otherwise, the Chiefs feel like they figure it out even when it's not figureoutable and when it shouldn't be, when it's like the odds against that are really high. And yet, here we go. So, look, they can't get three and six. I mean, they just can't. That's just too hard. But, you know, win some games, some tight games here, show them who you are, and get into the regular season and be okay. But how would you grade their offensive line, and what would you say? Would you say it was average?

33:03Rich Eisen:Well, what I would say is they have the highest paid center, highest paid right guard. They are hoping they got it right with Josh Simmons at the left tackle spot, the 11th different guy to start there in the Mahomes era um and I think you know they need to run it that's what I think they need they need to I know Andy yeah you can't just he can't be Superman all the time it's like what Josh was trying to do and now all of a sudden they run the ball and on Josh Allen looks like amazing so you've we've seen that movie from them Rich and we saw that in 2021 kind of back three four years ago where it was like Superman every week And it's like, no, you grind into the, you know, Clark Kent shows up way too much because you just, you can't do it that often.

33:45And so I agree with you, but they're a little desperate right now. So like the, the, the, the doing whatever it takes to get some games on some wins on your belt. Fine. But in the end, they know, they know very well. I've talked to Andy about it. Like they know extremely well that they can't ask Patrick, just run around, be Superman and get all the way. They just can't do it.

34:04Rich Eisen:So in the few minutes I have left with you, I'd be remiss if I did not ask you, Steve Young, about the 49ers. 3-0, banged up everywhere, no Kittle, no Purdy, no Bosa now, no Iuke walking through that door anytime soon, and yet they have yet to lose a football game. They take on the Jaguars this weekend. How real are the 49ers? We just don't know. It's impossible to know right now. But are they showing signs of a transitioning team where young players, rookies are going to contribute and they're going to you know by the end of the year we're going to have fans wearing four four new jerseys that they don't even you know they're just learning about now and uh and somehow they just stay gritty in those tight ball games and get on a roll with the tight ball games and win instead of last year losing most of them win most of them and then get into the tournament and figure out a way to get gritty again like i just they're not they're not the superpower they're not the best roster in football like they were a couple years ago and now especially with nick nick's a gut punch that's a groin shot that you're not gonna you're doubled over for a little while no matter what and then in the biggest games of the year that are coming who's that guy that's going to close games down and if it's bryce hall then okay like Like, that's what I mean.

35:26Like, new people need to become, you know, Nick Bosa. They need to become Debo and all the rest of it. And so, and Brandon needs to get healthy. So, it's like there's a lot of stuff that's got to happen to get in the mix. But right now, with the record, like, if you can get into a playoff game and, you know, who knows what it'll look like in December. Like I said, this is preseason, and the NFL is so much faster in development than they've ever been that you can actually say, we'll throw a team together, we'll see you Christmas, we'll let you know. And I think right now, early returns are 3-0, awesome, because they all could have gone the other direction, and you're in a much worse spot.

36:09So right now, I'm a believer, yet tentative, because you can't just keep getting hurt.

36:14Rich Eisen:And then last thing for you here, Steve, you know very well what it's like to replace a legend, to also use your legs when you need to and play with heart. Yeah, right. That's the setup for what goes through your mind when you watch Baker Mayfield play football these days. Steve. I love Baker. I mean, the grittiness and he throws the ball better than I thought. He's and it feels like he's one of those guys that found a space where, you know, he got somebody that the clouds opened up and the sun came out and and really helped the quarterback and where he was was not. you know it's like my he he's the perfect case for what i just gave you as a reason why he's thriving and now what's happening is he's growing there's even when you get a lot of help you still have to go through a thousand filters and hurdles to be good or great and a lot of it is uh you know understanding that you know you're who you are what can i do what can i how can i how can i accentuate the things i'm really good at and how can i diminish the things that i'm not that great at or get better at.

37:21And it feels like Baker's on a quest. And it feels like every time I see him, he's better than I saw him last time. And I love that. I love that's how it, that's how you get there. And, um, and that's the, that's the beauty of being in a place where it's, you know, for quarterbacks, a good spot. And now let's see how good you can get. And Baker's like, okay, I'm willing to ask the question and go into like jump into the void and say, how good am I? And And have the humility and the vulnerability to recognize that, you know, maybe I'm not as good as I thought I was, but I'm going to get better.

37:57And I love the Baker Mayfield story, and I'm in.

38:00Rich Eisen:Yeah, and they're taking on the Eagles in a big game. I guess one last one for you. I lied. I did a top 10 list earlier this week in advance of Micah going back to Dallas about revenge games. One of them that I put on was Montana taking on you guys in the 49ers in Kansas City. That's got to be number one. I mean, it was just insane. What was that like from your perspective and what Dallas might be dealing with this weekend? It was nutty. It was like for a regular season game. It was like, I don't know what to do. The battle of the bulge, man. It was like, it was crazy. It was like the, like, it was crazy.

38:35And then it was over. And, you know, I, the rest of the season. And like, that's what things about regular season revenge games or whatever else. It's like, it's, it's kind of an insane moment in the regular season. but then you just go on.

38:50Rich Eisen:Yeah, I mean, five weeks later, another revenge game that I put on the list was Deion back in Atlanta. And he was high-stepping from, like, the 30-yard line, pick six and Jeff George, you know. I love that. That was awesome. That moment right there. Look at those colors. He screwed up. I mean, that was the colors that Lee looked best in. I don't know what he was thinking. I know. He did sort of go around the league winning championships, wherever he was uh he was all that though bro do not sleep on deon sanders and his talent like it was different you know i said like some people are just different he was freaking different well and amazing well i mean in that season you only lost three times uh winning it all having the monkey removed from your back in that year but it did start i guess in week two with that game against montana and and you know i'm just wondering what you think the cowboys are going to be dealing with on on uh on sunday night with micah coming into the building knowing what it's like to play a game like that in the regular season steve i i love the idea of a revenge game but you have to have the emotion for revenge like i'm not sure like like you think it's a revenge game i think it's a revenge game i'm not sure the cowboys think it's a revenge game like i'm not sure they even have the wherewithal to even have a revenge game like i'm just worried that like the core fundamental ability to just like have a locker room that's empowered a coach that can fire people and walk in and own the own the room like stuff that just hasn't happened for so long it's just debilitated this team to a point where i just i don't know that they have the chutzpah to have a revenge game you know steve you the man thanks for the time love chatting with you let's do this more often look for more of my calls and requests of your time sir thank you well i'll take 16 balls anytime ladies and gentlemen steve young steve young doing callbacks dropping takes using yiddish didn't he see that one coming either right here on the rich eyes and show on the disney plus stream espn app everywhere and ESPN Radio presented by Progressive Insurance.

43:04Rich Eisen:Appreciate it. And your hosting. I appreciate it. Watching you for decades. Wow. I will take all of that. What's on your mind, sir? The New York Giants. Uh-huh. I was born into a New York Giants family. Okay. When they unceremoniously fired Tom Coughlin, we have gone downhill since in coaching. I don't even know what Joe Judge was. Let's just forget about him because that's just trauma-inducing to think about that. What I think the Giants need to do, I hope the kid Jackson Dart is good. I think Brian Dayball is a better coordinator than he is a head coach. And I think the GM is a better talent evaluator than talent retainer.

43:42Rich Eisen:looking at Xavier McKinney, Daniel Jones, and Saquon Barkley going on to do what they did. It's hard to stomach. I think we need the clean house as far as the coaching staff and the upper office. We hire Louis Riddick as the GM, Brian Flores as the head coach. Interesting, Khalil. Appreciate the two cents, your kind words, and your very eloquent way of putting things as to why this needs to work for Brian Dable right now and Joe Shane. like the rubber is meeting the road as i mentioned um and jackson dart according to ian rapaport as he reported on the prime video broadcast last night there was a 10-hour meeting on tuesday with jackson dart 10 hours sent out for coffee and donuts like midnight run you know what i mean um and um and then this uh soundbite from today on jackson dart and you know taking his swag and how it can translate into performance led to this answer from Brian Dable.

44:45No, he's the same guy every day. He's got a good personality. He's outgoing.

44:51Rich Eisen:He's a good communicator. He's a jokester at times. But when it comes to football, he's all business in terms of his preparation. Again, he calls me late at night last night about red zone, where they got it. And it's pretty late. I said, get some sleep. We'll hit it in the morning. But he's on, and it's all football for him. Get some sleep. We'll hit it in the morning. I mean, yeah, got to get your rest because guess who's coming to town? That Charger defense is no joke. And if he performs well here and starts to get things moving in the right direction despite an all-in-four start, then they go to New Orleans.

45:33Rich Eisen:And if he comes home and takes care of business, against the Philadelphia Eagles, now you're starting. Now you're off to a start, okay? Again, we're all looking at these like these are tough games for a rookie, but all he's got to do is win one or two of them, and now you're beginning to feel like this is real. And if Scadaboo can just see what he rams into, that would be fine for me. Just don't lower your head, man. And this is not college. I love the way he plays, but he frightens the hell out of me the way he's running right now. And I just want him to do the Cam Scadaboo thing. Jackson Dart, do the Jackson Dart thing.

46:21Rich Eisen:Offensive line, let's blow open some holes for Scadaboo. Let's protect Dart so he can find Malik neighbors. And this is what we're talking about. And let the defense start to assert itself. The Giants have the formula there. It's there. It's there. Young studs on offense creating excitement and points and the defense creating pressure on the other offense to try and keep up or come up with a big score because the Giants just did. It's there. It's a winning formula. Can they do it? And starting 0-3 is not helpful. and do it against the Chargers first, not great. But I don't think I'm being overly optimistic.

47:11Rich Eisen:It's there. All you got to do is just, what do you, boy, if you beat the Eagles in Giants Stadium, or pardon me, MetLife for the Giants fans, yeah, no, that's the good stuff. And that's what they're looking for. That's what they need. The Ridge Eisen Show Podcast. Hi, Ryan Reynolds here for Mint Mobile. Are you looking for a beach read this summer?
