In short

The episode is split between college basketball talk and an in-studio interview with filmmaker Antoine Fuqua. Topic 1: “Overreaction Monday” reactions to the UConn vs Duke game and the NCAA tournament picture, including a bizarre Dan Hurley moment with an official (forehead-to-forehead contact while checking time; could have been teed up). Hosts also debate whether Michigan vs Arizona is effectively the “de facto national championship game,” citing betting odds (Michigan/Arizona plus 150; UConn plus 650; Illinois plus 500). They argue UConn’s recent Final Four run (four in a row) and Dan Hurley’s 125-27 record since becoming coach. Topic 2: Antoine Fuqua’s film Michael (about Michael Jackson through 1988).

Guests

Antoine Fuqua (director; Equalizer films with Denzel Washington; Training Day director). Key claims/examples: Fuqua says Jafar Jackson rehearsed as Michael for two years; Fuqua claims he couldn’t tell Jafar apart from Michael in early tests; Coleman Domingo plays Joe Jackson. Fuqua highlights recreating the Moonwalk (secret rehearsal; jacket from his mother) and Thriller (shot at the real location; full moon). He also recounts Training Day success moments (Denzel’s car scene and “King Kong” Pelican Bay moment).

Oh, he got it! This is the Rich Eisen Show. Michigan wins the Midwest region. Earlier on the show. ESPN College Basketball Analyst Jay Villis.

1:31Rich Eisen:ESPN College Basketball Analyst Andrea Carter. Illinois Head Coach Brad Underwood. Coming up, Director Antoine Fuqua. And now, it's Rich Eisen. On the air, here on Disney +, the ESPN app, ESPN Radio, Sirius XM Channel 80. Antoine Fuqua is in our green room. So excited to have him back here on this program. I believe he was here previously for one of the Equalizer films that he was doing with Denzel. Does he know Denzel? So he's going to be joining us in advance of his new film, Michael, which is about Michael Jackson, his rise to prominence all the way through to his life and career in 1988. and Jafar Jackson, the kid, or the new, I shouldn't say kid, the actor who plays Michael is a revelation.

2:31Rich Eisen:My goodness. And you could see commercials for that film everywhere. It's in theaters near you later on this coming next month in April. And I believe this is Antoine's first interview on shows like this for the film. So we're honored that he will be here shortly. out here for you to hopefully enjoy the conversation. That's up to me, I guess, is to ask him the right questions. We've been talking nonstop about the UConn-Duke game. I gave my two cents on it. Jay Billis joined in hour number one. Brad Underwood, the head coach of Illinois, joined us in hour two. I asked him, you know, you're scouting.

3:11Rich Eisen:You're wondering who your next opponent is going to be. It's either UConn or Duke. How did you take in that game? He said he didn't see the end of it. That he was Zooming doing Zoom interviews. That's crazy. so if you missed any of that conversation youtube.com slash rich eyes and show is our youtube channel and also there's our podcast version of the show there's our disney plus page as soon as this show's over you can watch all three hours whenever you want and we discussed earlier about how it happened how it all went down one thing we haven't discussed that I kind of want to hit before we get to overreaction Monday, on a Monday, is all of the calls.

3:54Rich Eisen:You see the calls coming in, the UConn call, the Duke call, the CBS call. You see the reaction of Raftery and Grand Hill sort of knocked off their equilibrium sitting down. Yeah, big time. The Duke basketball call, I believe the announcer for Duke, was talking about how one of the players for UConn was on the court. That should be a technical, which was a nice try. Funny. But some of the video that you see of this moment in the aftermath, there was a technical foul that could have been called on UConn. Yeah. And I don't know, Dan Hurley went up to an official who was making his way to the scorer's table, I believe, to check on the time.

4:41Rich Eisen:is you know they added a tenth of a second onto it i don't know what it was if it was playful it looked like it was playful um but he made contact with an official did you see this no where he goes up the officials walking over and hurley stands in front of him and basically puts his forehead onto the forehead of the of the referee and just like moves his head around playfully you know and walked away what a beautiful psycho and you know if the official didn't take it playfully or what have you they could have easily teed up dan hurley and today's conversation would be about his inability to comport himself as opposed to everything else that we are rightfully talking about, which is his incredible ability to recruit and coach up and dial things up and let things play out and have his guys situationally brilliant, all of that stuff.

5:45Rich Eisen:And being, by the way, I couldn't believe this. He's 125 and 27. That's his record since becoming coach of UConn. But do you see this moment that I'm talking about right now? Yeah, this is kind of weird. He's not, like, smiling. He's not really grinning. I think it's cheeky. That's the way I look at it. And he might know the official for a long time, and, you know, and they go way back, and so this official knows that he's just having fun with an incredible moment that just happened. But he does make contact. Yeah, and he almost, like, cuts off the ref while he's walking to the scorer's booth and kind of, like, gives him one of these and then kind of walks off.

6:21Rich Eisen:It's really bizarre. It is bizarre. It's similar to – remember, didn't he push one of his players to get into a spot on the middle of the game. Yeah. I think Sue sent all of us a reel from 60 Minutes talking about Hurley's interesting practice regimen that he has with his players. A little bit off the wall, but that's part of him. That's part of him, man. Could you imagine if they had teed him up for making contact? I could have. No, I could have. You can't. I mean, you say that, but, you know? I thought the funniest thing was when he was, he got ready to do his post-game interview. The first thing he says is, someone stole my pin.

7:09Rich Eisen:I collect all my pins. Like, he was so concerned. I guess he had a final four. I think it knocked a guy. Oh, yeah. And she was like, well, I think it was Tracy Wilson. Tracy Wilson was like, we'll get you another pin. Well, I know you're superstitious. Yeah. You know? But he was really good. He's an interesting cat, man. Yeah. But you know what he does? he cuts down nets. Google them. They're very successful, man. Google them. He cuts down nets. That's why I'm saying this whole business, and it's going to be a narrative, and it's going to build, and then it'll rebound in the other direction. It will.

7:43I don't know if you check on a Vegas line

7:46Rich Eisen:and that sort of thing, too. But this whole business of the Michigan-Arizona winner is the winner of this tournament. I've literally not seen that. Oh, please. It's the first thing I'm hearing. Well, maybe you're on a different Twitter than me, but I haven't seen anyone. I'm not on Twitter at all, as you know. Different thread than I am. So, yeah, I mean. Yeah, no, it's just like, hey, Michigan versus Arizona. The two wagons are playing each other, and whoever wins that one is just going to roll over whoever comes out of UConn, Illinois. Give me a break. Give me a break. Yeah, the odds are saying, you know, kind of the winner of that game wins.

8:21Rich Eisen:Exactly. I'm sure the odds are saying that, and you're going to be hearing that. You're going to see the topic bars and all that sort of, it's nonsense. Listen, you could sit here and say Illinois is a three seed that doesn't belong or couldn't expect them or they're unexpected, all that business. You know, I was hearing from friends of mine, hey, how lucky are we that we got Iowa State knocked out, Tennessee's a six seed. I'm like, hey, you know who was a six seed in the 1989 tournament? Michigan. Michigan just dispatched Tennessee with the biggest regional final win since Michigan whipped Virginia by 37 in 1989.

9:06Rich Eisen:Now, you don't see a lot of 30-point games in the regional. You don't. I understand that. I understand that. But I don't care about any more seeding or anything else. And certainly when you're talking about UConn and Dan Hurley and Caravan and the rest of these guys who are probably feeling quite invincible right now and no doubt Hurley will utilize the nobody believes in us. He'll play that card. He'll play that 52 times in one deck. Tell Mr. Indiana basketball, nice shot, kid. But here comes Michigan. Here comes Arizona. Get out of here with that. Come on now. I don't want to hear it. But I'll be hearing it for the next four days, five days.

9:57Rich Eisen:I just don't know how anyone can poo-poo UConn when they've been now the three of the last... Four Final Fours. Four Final Fours. And they've got a team that has a lot of seniors and juniors in the mix. So how are you all of a sudden... That's what I'm saying. That doesn't make sense to me. Get ready for it. How would you ever... You'll see it. Imagine if he'd taken the Lakers job. Uh-huh. UConn wouldn't be in three of the last... I don't know. Probably not. Let's do it. It's Overreaction Monday. Hit it. That was terrible. That was crap. That was garbage. This place sucks. Overreaction Monday.

10:33Rich Eisen:On a Monday. We're actually doing it on the day itself. Right? How about that? Look at us. We're not observing. How's it going? You guys good? Great. I mean, you know. Sorry, TJ. I know you're doing good. It's all right. We're going to do some football and a little hodgepodge. That's the way these are going these days. Sure. Thinking about this, guys, Tom said this on Friday, and I don't know if you guys really picked up on it. Tommy P? Kirk Cousins is still out there. Yes. The Steelers should break up with Rodgers. Sign Kirk Cousins.

11:06Rich Eisen:Hmm. Breaking up is hard to do. That's what they say. It's not you, it's me. It's not you, it's me. You know what I mean? Someone's going to pull that with Rodgers. It's not you, it's me. I think they probably should. Why? What's the big deal? He's younger. His arm looked a little livelier last year. I don't know. Did it? Eh. The one thing, I didn't think that Rodgers' arm, I didn't think it was Rodgers' arm. There was nothing. Actually, Rodgers played very well last year. Yeah, you're right. One guy is seemingly, though, ready to go. No, I know. One guy you can get now and start moving. What's the other guy doing?

11:41Rich Eisen:Nobody's coming in yet. You can't. There's no rush. There's no rush. We could be throwing. We could be working out. We could be doing stuff. Would you rather, if you're McCarthy, have a guy who you've known for 20 years and knows your system as well as he does, who knows the team as well as he does because he was there last year, and knows the building and the organization, or you want to start from scratch. Aren't they kind of the same guy? No, they're not. And you know that too. Really? Yeah, you know that too. Come on. As you know, I'm doing my power rankings on Wednesday of the 10 best players of the NFL Network era.

12:20Rich Eisen:as the NFL Network's era being owned by the NFL is over Tuesday night. I'm thinking of putting Rodgers on that list. Hmm, interesting. Rodgers' entire career has been with the NFL Network's existence. TJ, we should come up with our own list and see if it matches Rich. Okay. This is an overreaction. All right. What else? You know, I don't really care what Andrew Barry says or what the Browns say. We are officially on Miles Garrett Trade Watch. Okay. Well, that's all. Oh, that's it? That's it? That's it. Yeah, that's it. I thought you were going somewhere else. No, no, no. This is it. He can hire, register, and he can, you know, say all this other crap.

12:59Rich Eisen:Brown for life. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Until he's not. You know what that all sounded like? I'm not going to be the Alabama head coach. And guess who was the Alabama head coach a week later? He's the Kalen DeBoer of general managing? Nick Saban. Oh, I see. Saban was the Dolphins coach. I'm not going to Alabama. And then he did. This guy's getting traded. Get ready. Well, he called him a career brown, which is, again, one way of saying that I'm not trading him, but also saying, well, I'm not lying. He's been with us his entire career. That's the truth. You know? That's why I said it sounded like he flipped his football card.

13:36Rich Eisen:Definition of is is. I don't think this is an overreaction either. We're on trade watch. I don't know if that means anything's going to happen. We're on trade watch. Well, we have to have some type of watch to make it even more interesting. Three ones, right? The maximum number of ones you could get for him? If not three ones, two in a second. You know what I mean? Like two for sure, obviously. Two for sure. Yeah, two is one thing's for certain. Who's a starter? Two things for sure. And a player, maybe, as well? Two ones, two in a player? I mean, three in a player? Yeah, I would want to get all of that.

14:08Rich Eisen:Man, you better trade him. Send him to the Dats. Forget a different conference. Like, different planet. Trade him to the UFL. Trade him to the UFL? You know? I wouldn't want to see him again. What, like, 12 guys? Yeah, sure. Like a whole roster? Yeah. The Jupiter Giants. You know what I mean? Trade him to the TGL. And free tickets to any rock movie ever. Future rock films. They should trade him to the WWE and have him ready for Mania. Yeah. WrestleMania. Whatever you could do to get him out of the – get league, get NFL compensation. This is great. But send him to a different league. Yeah, yeah, yeah.

14:44Rich Eisen:So who – What do we trade, like Seth, Braun Breaker? To get Miles Garrett, you're going to have to give up. They're going to want someone young. They're going to want Javon Evans because he's young. Okay. And then they're going to need, they're probably going to try to get Roman Reigns. You need someone to sell tickets. Yeah. And then maybe Cody Rhodes. Cody, Roman, and Javon Evans. This is all viable content. At a spot in the Street Fighter movie? Viable content. Kyle. I'm on watch. That's for sure. Would the Yankees give up Aaron Judge? No, I don't want to do that. That's great. What else, Chris?

15:15Rich Eisen:You know, I'm going to get the hype trick going for these guys. Okay. I think that Caleb's going to be up there for MVP. And the Bears are going to have the highest scoring offense in the league. The Bears. You got Kalief Raymond saying, I want to leave the Lions. I know, yeah, I know. Who has traditionally been one of the best offenses. I know, I'm seeing that too. And says, no, I want to go to the Bears to play with Ben Johnson. This is a great last Monday of March topic right now. That's going to set the league on fire this year. it's still Chicago what does that mean wow that was so dismissive no no no no where it could be 10 degrees there's no offense that's what I'm saying there's a reason why the Bears have been struggling to find like you know 1A wide receivers who can have 15-1600 yard seasons Chris it's not because the Bears put it all together those issues are gone my man That's part of the reason why if I'm the Bears and I could build something indoors, if I could build something indoors and keep it on the spot where it currently is in Chicago, sold.

16:24Rich Eisen:Sold. And then this is the perfect coach a million times over with the perfect quarterback a million times over. I'm not saying it's because it's Chicago. It doesn't happen. It hasn't happened in Chicago for a reason because it gets freaking cold there, man. You think Indiana will give them a dome? Indiana will give them whatever they want. You know? So I'll just call that an overreaction. For that alone, it's just, you know, can they get 60, 70 degree weather for most of their home games? Can we get that? Yeah, let's front load the home game. It does get biggerly cold and shy. That's what I'm saying, which means 30, 40 point games usually don't happen like that.

17:01Rich Eisen:What else, Chris? All right, a couple hoops ones and then we'll get out of there. Why would I ever slag on Chicago? It's one of my favorite cities in the United States. It truly is. I love Chicago. No, come on now. Oh, you know, I'm watching. Waddell and Sylvie will never have me back on. And the wiener circle would curse me out. Well, they do that anyway. I'm watching you and Adam's boys kind of blow it yesterday, right? And it got me thinking about last year. And it got me thinking about. There's no overreaction possible here for Duke right now. Like since Coach K left. Oh, this is great. John Shire should be on the hot seat.

17:33Rich Eisen:Like, what are we doing? All right, now that's stupid. This guy, I mean, come on. Did you see the list of all the guys? I know everybody's making that. I know everybody's talking about it. The last title. Why is it his fault? He's won three Big Ten champions. Here's why it's his fault. Last year, they had the most talented team. They have the one and two in rookie of the year in the NBA this year. I know that, yes. Don't even make the title game, lose in the Final Four. Yeah, they lost to Houston. Completely new roster. Yeah, yeah. Number one team, number one seed going into the tournament. They look great this year.

18:01Rich Eisen:Below a 19-point game. Didn't look good, really, in any of their tournament games. Right. One common denominator. Hot seat. The head coach. Get out of here. Seat's hot. You should stay there because I'm sick and tired of everybody firing. Duke should call Jay Wright. He's not going anywhere. Please give me a break. You don't think North Carolina has already attempted to do that? I just don't. Two things. He doesn't deserve this. That's number one. Number two, I don't need another school trying to poach Dusty May. Okay? I don't need it. Better gig? Better gig, my ass. Yeah, I said that. Give me a break.

18:38Rich Eisen:What's a better gig than in the Big Ten right now, being the king of the Big Ten right now? You might not be in a week. And Michigan having 30 years of swag and you get the right mix? You're going to be beating people off with a stick trying to get on this program. Going to North Carolina? Get out of here. Okay, whatever. It's not? Who played at North Carolina? I don't know. I don't know. Walker. I know. There's a number 23 that I only know about who's in the building with the 23 you're referring to right now. Here you go, TJ. You cut down a net there yesterday. You're going to like this one, TJ.

19:12Rich Eisen:Yaxel Lendeborg, baby. Yaxel. Let's go. What else? Michigan-Arizona is the de facto national championship game. What are we talking about? Have you had this thing all queued up this entire show? Or you just made this out? No, I had it written last night. I told you, TJ. It's absurd. Just look at the odds, right? Michigan and Arizona are both plus 150. So what? Then it jumps up to 500 Illinois, plus 650 Connecticut. Like, everyone's expecting the winner of this game to cut the nuts down. Remember what Jay Billis said? 1993. What is he? Five slamma jamma. What does he know? Takes care of Louisville in the de facto national championship game, and then suddenly Jim Valvano's looking for somebody to hug.

19:53Rich Eisen:That's true. Give me a break. I don't want to hear it. It's absurd. And I'm not even, I'm not one of these types of fans that's saying, oh, good luck, Arizona. I see the wagon. That's how we led the show the other day. I get it. Big Ten strong, but Arizona's a wagon. My team's looking like a wagon right now too. Come on now. That's nuts. Because Michigan and or Arizona could easily lose to Illinois and or UConn. One thing that Michigan has not had to do in this tournament, which is crazy, chock full of Big Ten teams, is face another Big Ten team. They have not done that yet. So, you got any more?

20:40Rich Eisen:Yeah. One more? So we can bring out our direct. Yeah, one for 14, eight strikeouts. Bo Bichette is the worst Mets free agent signing this Saturday. I think that's accurate. You want to chime in on that? Already booed? Sorry, three. He's already been booed? Getting booed at home. And he said he's surprised it hasn't happened sooner. A whiff of Beltran. But we. Ooh. I like that cologne. Well, I hate that cologne. We know who Bo Bichette is. He's going to be all right. That's the thing I hate about baseball, right? What do you hate about baseball? Three games into the season. I love baseball. I'm reading teams on Twitter and threads just all of a sudden ready to just torch everything.

21:17Rich Eisen:It's three games. Like, what are we talking about? It's New York Mets fans. Yeah, Mets fans. It's Mets fans. Let's go. They demand some standard of play for their whoopie pies. Whoopie. Whoopie. By the way, I don't even know who would be the worst Mets signing this season. No, no, you just threw that out there. Yeah, I just put it in there. Look at this. Mr. Mets is so happy. We are 2-1. I know. You had a walk-off win. It could have easily been 1-2 against the Pirates this weekend. It could have been 0-3. Or we could have been 3-0. That's true. Solid present. Like the Yankees. We're 2-1. He only gave out one run against the Giants, only one.

21:56Rich Eisen:One single run. He didn't get any hits. I got problems with our third base coach right now. Well, you should have a problem with your third base, man. Yeah. The whole point of this conversation. Well, no, because the fact is we put Baty at third. The guy who's actually there. That's what we got to do. The guy who's playing third and talking about it's putting a lot of mental stress on him to learn how to play third. Thus, the whiffs. We've got a third base. Good one, Chris. Great finish. All right, let's take a break. Next stunt, Chris. A man who knows all about drama, Antoine Fuqua, the director of Michael and theaters near you coming next month in a moment.

22:39Rich Eisen:If you're like me and my family, you're all about creating amazing memories while on vacation. And for me, many of those have involved a home we found on Airbnb. 24:21Rich Eisen:Inside Antoine Fuqua is here. We just saw a trailer from Michael. It's awesome, man. Thank you, man. Congratulations. And what do you think of when you're watching your trailer back right now? You must have spent a ton of time on that, obviously. Yeah, two years and one month. Oh, wow. Two years and one month. It was a journey, but I just had so much fun making this movie, man. Well, I bet. And you could see just from, you know, the lush scenes and scenery that you put on the screen right there. Start of the Jackson 5 right up to the early parts of his solo career, right? That's right. Pretty much.

24:57Rich Eisen:The only other bad tour where he really took off and became a solo artist. What intrigued you about wanting, because again, you have your choice here. So what intrigued you about wanting to do this, Antoine? Michael. I mean, Michael just, he transcends, you know, any artist I've ever experienced in my life. Did you ever meet him? No. I was supposed to meet Michael on Remember the Times. Okay. But I was doing a commercial at the time, and John Singleton wound up doing it. Okay. So it was just some calls back and forth, but I never got to sit down with Michael. Okay. You know? But, I mean, Michael's so eccentric and so different.

25:36I mean, he shaped my career as well because I watched Michael not let himself get put in a box as an artist. He was the first black artist on MTV. So for me, doing videos back in the day, I only got to do R &B and rap videos. I couldn't do Aerosmith or something like that. So I watched Michael break out of the box and create music for everyone and get on MTV and change the game. And so I remember thinking, I don't have to just do videos of just R &B and rap. I can transcend that and do other things as well, just as an artist.

26:13Rich Eisen:Sure. And now you're, you couldn't do the video back then. Now you're kind of recreating it. That's how life works. That's what you're doing now. Divine order, man. It wasn't meant for me. That was meant for John Singleton, God rest his soul. Sure, yeah. You know, here we go. Right. And so let's talk about the casting here because it's so crucial to get this right, right? I mean, like you want to you want to recreate something, but you also have to feel like it's real. How did you how did you cast Jafar Jackson as Michael here? Well, Jafar is an interesting journey. Jafar was rehearsing to be Michael for two years before.

26:45About a year before I came on, Graham King, the producer, had found Jafar. And when he flew to Italy to see me, I was on Equalizer 3. He said, I want you to do this film by Michael Jackson. I said, who's going to play Michael? Bob Richardson the great DP showed me a video of him and Michael on the set together but it was modern and I said well who when did you shoot a video with Michael Jackson he said no this is Jafar and it blew my mind you couldn't tell the difference could not tell the difference then when I met Jafar I thought he was pretending I thought he was acting auditioning for me we wouldn't have breakfast he was so Michael like just his way he spoke and his behavior and his gentleness.

27:28And I said, this guy has something interesting about it. Then we did a test screening in Rich. And I tell you, man, he walked out of the room and it was Michael Jackson. And we started recording him just doing tests, makeup tests, all that. Then I threw a question at him. Now, Jafar never acted before in his life. This is his first time ever. This is his first time ever. Never acted before in his life. Wow. Right? I threw a question at him just to see what he would do. And he answered the question as if he was Michael. And he had the whole room with tears in their eyes. And I was like, he's the real deal.

28:07This kid is for real. First day of shooting, bad tour. So his first day in front of 500 extras, he had to come out and perform. Bad. Bad.

28:16Rich Eisen:Nice. Man, he blew everybody away. And Coleman Domingo is his father. Oh, my gosh. I'm in the main goal place. Joe? Yeah. Let me tell you a story about Coleman. Ice. I did a test with Coleman. I was filming something else. I hit a corner at the stage we're in, and I forgot we were doing a test with Coleman. So when I turned the corner, I saw a guy with his back to me, and the makeup people were doing, hair and makeup on. I thought, this must be a test for a wig or something. Right. The guy turned around, it was Coleman. Shocked me. I can't tell you what I said. I don't say it on the right. But it shocked me.

28:53and he started talking to me as if he was Joe in our normal conversation about the day's work. It was so good. I went to Graham King, the producer. I said, Graham, we should film Coleman today. It was not planned. So when he's on the stage, you'll see in the movie when Michael's performing the final tour with his brothers, that shot of Coleman, all that performance, was the first day I saw Coleman in here and make up as Joe. It was so good. I said, I'm putting him in the movie right now.

29:20Rich Eisen:Right now. Today. And that's what's going to show up on the screen. Wow. And he was prepared. And so how did you decide which moments to recreate and make big? How did you decide that? Well, you know, working with John Logan, the writer, and Graham King, we really shaped the movie to capture Michael's character from his formative years to bad tour. Right. And so through that time, there's highlights, as we know, right? There's moments you hit Thriller, Moonwalk at the Barry Gordy show, the beginning of Off the Wall album and all that stuff. So that kind of dictated certain things. But the choices were hard because there's so many great songs.

30:05You forget how many great songs Michael has.

30:07Rich Eisen:It's unbelievable. It truly is unbelievable. And they're all massive hits. Not just massive hits. It's like a part of your life. When you hear it, you go back to that time. And you just remember that feeling. And that's what the movie does. It takes you all the way back there. Remember the time. Remember the time. Look at us. Look at us, Antoine. Rich is quick, man. It's early for me. You guys have been up. I am. We've been here for a couple hours. But so, yeah, what moments for you did you, sitting in your position, go, wow, this is amazing that I'm able to recreate this in such an artistic way.

30:50Rich Eisen:Which was that one for you? Wow. Hard. I mean, day one was bad, man. I bet. That was hard. What about the moonwalk? The moonwalk was incredible. Because I think I told you in the green room that we had Don Misher, the producer of that Motown show, telling us the story about the moonwalk, Michael doing it and getting ready for it and figuring out would he do it, would he not do it. And he did it. And he did it. secret from everybody too. That was a special moment because the jacket he has on belongs to his mother. He got that from his mother and he kept everything in secret. He let no one see his rehearsal.

31:26Barry Gordy didn't even know he was going to do that. So when he got up on stage and he performed, it just blew everybody's mind. That was like the dance heard around the world, man. That was incredible. But the moment for me to really, and then we shot it all at the real place at the Pasadena playoffs. Awesome. Everything we shot was pretty much in the real place. Everything. Wow. The night we shot Thriller was incredible. We shot it in the real place where they shot the video. It was a full moon. When I pulled up in my car, my crew was dancing around with wolf heads on, singing Thriller. I was like, oh, this is going to be a good night.

32:02But it was it gave me chills, man. And then I saw the zombies rehearsing. And I was like, I'm so blessed to be here doing this. It was incredible.

32:11Rich Eisen:Well, I mean, since you have history and you're an aficionado, wouldn't you say that Thriller video was the pinnacle of his MTV moments? Yes. Thriller was, because it was a movie. Right. It was the first time we ever saw like a mini movie video. When we started off in the theater with the girl and he turned into a werewolf. I mean, that was scary when you were a kid, you know what I mean, at that time. But I think it was probably one of the most expensive as well. But that was incredible. But that's Michael. He was always pushing the envelope. Antoine Fuqua here on the Rich Eisen Show. Every time you come on here, I want to go so deep into your history.

32:51Rich Eisen:We kind of have a new audience being here on Disney, plus in the ESPN app from the last time you were here. Right. Did you know Training Day was a hit when you were making it? Did you know it? I had, humbly, I had two moments in that movie that I felt this was going to be successful. It was Denzel in the car, chestnut checkers, because he had just killed Roger. And I thought, if Denzel, which I knew he could, is a great actor, can seduce us back into this car, this movie's out of here. And he did. And then they put Ethan in the bathtub. And the King Kong moment. When he did that, gang members came up to me telling me that, oh, dude, this is a hit.

33:40This is a hit. Like that, that, those two moments for me stand out. The King Kong moment.

33:46Rich Eisen:Did you know what he was going to say word for word? No. Nothing, right? Well, I knew obviously script. There was a certain part. Right. But that's Denzel. He was just in a zone. I mean, that was one of those moments that people talk about AI. Those are the moments where you go, it's a great tool. It's going to be a great tool, I think, at some point. but the emotion in the moment that an actor can bring, you can't predict that. That's something that's just inside of Denzel. And when that came out, I was just like, I hope I got it. I just turned to my operator who was like shaking like this. Cause you know, it was, it was anamorphic man.

34:32So at that time, you know, like shooting anamorphic at night, it had to be sharp focused. and I looked over at the guy and he was just shaking. I was like, please tell me you got that. Because that was the take. That was it. There was no other take.

34:44Rich Eisen:You didn't have Denzel do another take, right? No. That was it. That was it. I mean, how do you tell an actor like that that wasn't good enough? I don't know what some directors like to do. Yeah, good luck with that. Not with Denzel. Nah, he walked over to me and he just had this look in his eyes. I was like, you good? He said, you good? I said, yeah. I don't know what else to tell you. I don't know what other direction do I give you. Was the King Kong, that was ad-libbed? Yeah. Okay. That was Denzel. Putting cases on all you embers? Putting cases. Some of that was in the script, but he flipped it the way he did it.

35:20Like putting cases on all you.

35:22Rich Eisen:Yeah, yeah, yeah. He kind of added some things in there, and then he just went into a whole other zone with the whole King Kong thing. With Pelican Bay. Denzel started that. The Pelican Bay stuff was not on the page is what you're saying. That was Denzel. That was him, man. He just kind of lit up. And I think I forgot to yell cut. Really? I was just watching it because everybody started walking away. And I'm just watching him. And then he lights a cigarette, right? And he's lighting a cigarette. And he's talking. And I'm just watching him. And I think at some point he probably looked at me like, you going to cut?

35:57Rich Eisen:I was like, oh, yeah, yeah. So he was finished acting and took a smoke break? He was still in it. That's the thing with DeZell. He was so Alonzo. So he was in it and he just lit up that cigarette and he was just like smoking. I'm just watching him for a while because I don't know what else he was going to do. You know, it was just so magical. And then I think he looked up at me and I was like, OK, cut, cut. Yeah, we have we've had Terry Crews here. Oh, yeah. As well. Yeah. He basically said you found him just milling about because he was a friend in security. Right. He said, hey, we're shooting the scene here.

36:32Rich Eisen:You want to watch Denzel work tonight? Yeah. And he's like, sure. And then you spotted him and said, do you want to be in the movie? Yeah, yeah, I saw him. Yeah, he was, I was with a bunch of gang members sitting around, and he was over there with some security guys. And I needed someone on the roof due to flipping pigeons. And I wanted him to look a certain way. Yeah. And I just saw Terry. And for some reason, I just said, who's that guy? And they said he's working with the security people or something. I said, yo, bring him over here. And he came over. I said, yo, man, you want to be in the movie?

37:00He was like, yeah. I said, I'm going to put you on the roof. You ever heard of Flipping Pigeons? He had heard of it before. I said, you're going to be on the roof doing this whole thing. And the next thing I know, Terry Crews. Boom. He's all over the place.

37:12Rich Eisen:By the way, boom. Terry Crews. Look at him now. I mean, it's amazing. That movie, interesting. People came in. Even Mendes. Yeah. Really, you know, when I think back on it, just amazing. I mean, Ethan was already Ethan, but he was something special in that film. Yeah, he was just nominated for an Oscar. He's been here before talking about that movie. Yeah, man. That movie, it holds up. I can confirm that for you, by the way. I mean, you know, I'm saying that people talk to me about it all the time. Right. So we're going to your hometown for the draft, the NFL's draft. Yes, sir. I believe it's the Thursday before your movie comes out.

37:48Rich Eisen:Yeah. The Thursday. So it's going to go NFL draft in Pittsburgh. And then the Michael movie. And then the Michael movie on Friday night. Maybe it'll be my luck. It'll be all good. It's going to be all good. I mean, I can pretty much say this is going to be all good. Yeah, man, I'm excited. The draft, I'm nervous about. Well, why? Because of the Steelers you're talking about? Yeah, man. Okay. Who are we going to? Rich is torturing me on that one. No! Come on, man. No, it's okay. I mean, you know, what do we do? Who do we get? Nobody. Nobody. I have no idea. It's a totally new world. Tomlin's gone.

38:22Which is going to be weird for me.

38:23Rich Eisen:It's weird for me, too. You know? I mean, you know, I'm glad that it's a homeboy that's taking over, though. Yeah. He's coming in. He's from Pittsburgh. The toll taker. It's bittersweet, though. Yeah. Because they did beat us in the Super Bowl. I know. It's crazy that if I told you that night, oh, the coach of the Packers, who was a former toll taker and a guy whose family owns a bar in Pittsburgh, he's going to be the one to take over for Tomlin one day. You're like, get out of here with that. It's just like a, I'm not sure if it's a dream or a nightmare. Pretty much. You know? But I think he's going to be a great job.

38:56It makes sense when you really think about it. Right. As far as the way the Steelers operate, he's a great coach. He's from Pittsburgh. He won with Rodgers. If Rodgers comes back, you know, why not? What's your favorite sports movie? Wow, my favorite sports movie? You know, there's some good ones, but I would say Brian's Song. You want old school on me here? Brian's Song. Because that emotionally messed me up. When I was a kid, that was like, and it was about bringing race together and how sports bring people together. and that's magic.

39:31Rich Eisen:Yeah, James Caan, Billy Dee, right? Bryan's song. Right, Bryan's song. I thought you'd go remember the Titans just to protect your friendship. I'm sure Dee liked Bryan's song too. I'm sure he did too, for sure. If you could direct a sports movie. It would be about the Steelers, the legacy of the Steelers. It's legacy of the Steelers. Ooh, I like that. Legacy of the Steelers. Okay. Yeah, the Steelers to me is just, that's America's team. I don't care what I mean. I know the Dallas fans are yelling at me right now. It's okay. TJ's from Pennsylvania. TJ. And is a diehard Cowboys fan. Come on, TJ.

40:05Grew up in Altoona.

40:08Rich Eisen:Grew up in Altoona. Oh, man. I'll talk to you later. We could, because I got some ideas. Come on, bro. I mean, if you were McCarthy, what's happening right now? No, you know, it would be the Steelers' legacy. It would be the Steelers' legacy. Okay. I think the Roonies are the classiest owners and loyal people, good people. That legacy is special. Who's the actor that's been on here that says he's been mistaken for Tomlin? Oh, Omar Epps. Omar Epps says he's been stopped. Yeah, they look alike. Okay, yeah, I can see that. We're casting it right now. Let's go. We're casting it right now. Finding those big boys is going to be the thing.

40:45Who's going to be Mean Joe Green? Who's going to be Jack Lambert?

40:48Rich Eisen:Hey, you're the one who picked Terry Crews out of a crowd. He had some time in the NFL. It's true. That's right. Yeah. He's just like, you know, this NFL thing's for the birds. Let me go try and flip some pitch. You know? And then the rest is history. Now he's everywhere. Let me go do some acting and not get hit so hard. That's right. Yeah, he's everywhere. So you have an eye for guys who can act. Oh, for sure. I love sports, too. You know what I mean? That's my love, man. It's great to see you. Thanks for coming here. Greatly appreciated. And I cannot wait for everybody to see Michael available exclusively in theaters Friday, April 24th.

41:24Rich Eisen:You will be dancing in the seats and in the aisles and bopping around and seeing some great iconic moments come to life. Great to see you, sir. Great to see you, right? The owner's meeting photograph, first one that we have, it's from Mike Garofalo, and it's apparently so terrible we can't even use it. Well, it's... I mean, there's a light stand in the middle. It's not great. Oh, he's separating the Harbaugh's with a light stand, huh? That's what it looks like. Yeah, Harbaugh's front and center, Andy Reid's back this year. Oh, Andy Reid's standing in the back. Yeah. All right. Once again, they put the bald guys together. My goodness gracious. Well, I was looking through previous years.

44:11Rich Eisen:We'll talk about it a little bit more when we get a better angle. Robert Sala and Dan Quinn always stand next to each other. Oh, is that right? Did they do that? Yeah. Oh, okay. Okay. Put the follicle, follically challenged people together. Where's McDonald at? That's the most. Where are they putting the winner? I counted. There's 30 of 32 in the photo. Got it. So he's not. So Belichick still boycotting him. Kyle Shanahan speaking about Mike Evans now on his team. Let's hit that. He's definitely a Hall of Famer. He's as good as it gets in the way he plays. I've always just liked the competitor.

44:42Rich Eisen:I mean, that's what, to me, his talent and everything is separated over. Really just how he's come to work every day, just the people I know who's practiced with, the way he is in the building, how important football is to him. I mean, the fact that he chose to come to us just for the football situation and stuff shows, like, how important football is to this guy. We have veterans, and we've got a number of veterans. I love the thought of pairing him up with some of the guys that, to me, are playing for one reason and one of the best news i heard over the weekend john lynch saying that george kittle could be ready week one week one that is good news hit it george is doing very good with his uh achilles as for a time frame i think you know um we're hopeful for week one you know some some management during training camp and all those but we're hopeful he's he's progressing um at a good rate okay Evans Kittle McCaffrey see what they do in the draft right Jed York Williams coming back Jed York said he'd like Brandon I back why wouldn't he they're paying him yeah they're paying him and it's just like hey Brandon I don't know what what gives or what happened there but that's Evans that's Kittle that's McCaffrey that's hopefully again Trent Williams that's Purdy where are you gonna get any better than that not sure makes sense if Jed York's just like we're paying him we paid him number one he wanted the money we gave it to him yeah then he blows his knee out and then suddenly we did something so terrible, he won't play for us anymore.

46:26I mean,

46:26Rich Eisen:he's on our cap. He's on, like, let's go. That's what the money is for. Right. Like, Jed York should go full Don Draper. Yeah. Because now you're talking. Pretty fun offense. Draft one more, and Ricky Pearsall stays healthy, and you're off and running, man. You win the Super Bowl, you were that close to being the one seed. Ah, man. I'm just, I'm angry for nine of things.
