Here's the snap, Beck looks, throws it down the field This is the Rich Eisen Show And it is intercepted by Indiana The Rich Eisen Show Touchdown, Fernando Mendoza I love you guys, let's f***ing go Earlier on the show Greenlight Podcast host, Chris Long ESPN Play-By-Play broadcaster, Chris Fowler Coming up Quarterback consultant, Jordan Palmer And now, it's Rich Eisen. Hour number three of the Rich Eisen Show is on the air. 844-204-RICH is the number to dial. Overreaction Monday on a Tuesday coming up.
2:07Rich Eisen:Phone lines are lit. Jordan Palmer is going to join us shortly here on the program as well to tell us his two cents about the quarterbacks getting ready to show up and show out at the combine and the draft, as well as Fernando Mendoza last night. We were talking a lot about Indiana football in their national championship game. uh with chris fowler last hour we also had chris long in the first hour if you've missed any of that don't worry there's our uh youtube channel there's our podcast all three hours there's also the disney plus page that we have there all three hours this show can be watched back whenever you wish 844-204-RICH is the number to dial right here in the program let's head to the phone lines um and uh keep rolling on is this mardi gras in new orleans is that how we're supposed to uh Mardi Gras Bob.
2:53Rich Eisen:What's up, Mardi Gras Bob? Mardi Gras Bob in New Orleans. What's up, Mardi Gras Bob? Oh, yeah, gentlemen. Pleasure to visit with you. Yeah, Mardi Gras Bob. It's actually carnival season. Carnival is a season. Mardi Gras is a day. Okay. We know. Excellent. Excellent. Just for definitions. Okay. What's on your mind, sir? I think the Indiana Hoosiers have saved single-handedly a lot of people's opinions on the current state of college football, where it just seems to be a bunch of itinerant mercenaries that travel from one team to the next for whoever's going to give them the most money. What we got this year, now first let me frame this by saying I'm in New Orleans, but I did not go to an SEC school or Tulane right down the street.
3:46Rich Eisen:I went to Arizona because I like basketball. it's not the only reason I went, but it didn't hurt. What we saw last night, I think we saw the best team, not necessarily the best team money could buy, Mark Cuban's billions aside. I think it restored faith in a lot of fans that are outside of the SEC or not rabid college football fans that, you know, this is a sport worth watching because there are good stories to it. not necessarily just who's got the biggest payroll. Exactly. And, you know, again, Mardi Gras, Bob, I'm not going to sit here and talk about somebody else's payroll. Michigan's got Larry Ellison bankrolling a lot of what Michigan's doing.
4:32Rich Eisen:I'm sure we could sit here and we with Phil Knight's bankrolling what Oregon's doing. Everybody's got, you know, it just it just used to be Buddy Garrity at some local Chevrolet that was putting it in paper bag. You know what I mean? Like, that's the way it was when we were growing up, to be honest with you. True. And so it's just different now, and you've just got to know what to do with it. I just want to see rules. I just want to see rules. You know what I mean? That's all. These are not elite players on Indiana's team. Good players, committed players, but these are not elite five-star guys.
5:08Rich Eisen:I don't think they have any five-star recruits on the team, and yet by becoming a team they did it over much more well-funded teams i don't know cuban gives them a lot of money but he's not putting in as much money as as uh oregon gets i don't know i mean you and i don't know you and i don't know mardi gras bob but and thanks for the call it's just again we just need to know uh what happens elsewhere or wherever where where the money is given to a player and then the job is gone and then the money's gone or somebody decides to go in the portal because the money's supposed to be there and then they show up and the money's not there or they're supposed to go in the portal and um because an agent says the money will be there and then they go in the portal the money's not there and they can't go back to their other spot i mean we had josh paid on this program last week he said there were 10 000 kids in the portal with two days to go with almost 4 000 kids in the fbs alone and i'm like what happens to the kids who don't land somewhere.
6:10Rich Eisen:Can they go back? And he goes, if their coach will have them back, Mottor will be gone. What happens then? What are the rules for that sort of thing? Let's go to Georgian in Florida. What's up? Is it Georgia or Georgian? Georgian. Oh, Georgian. How are you, Georgian? Good. How are you guys doing? Okay. What's going on? Well, it's a first-time caller for me, So I just want to say thank you for the years of entertainment and everything along the way. So I'm just so glad to hear you back on the radio, at least on ESPN radio. With the news of a few coaching hires in the NFL that might have been skipped over because of the playoffs and the game last night is Halfley leaving Green Bay to Miami.
6:59Rich Eisen:Who do you guys think would be a good fit for defensive coordinator in Green Bay?
7:07Rich Eisen:Interesting question. Jonathan Gannon. I mean, there's a bunch of guys. We'll see who lands with a head coach. We're assuming Sean McDermott lands as a head coach somewhere. What if he doesn't? Yeah, and there's been a lot of talk that Raheem Morris might be a top pick and maybe Al Harris since he was a previous Packer. It could be. So I just wasn't sure who would be a good fit for Micah and X. Sure. The bottom line, though, is that don't you think they're going to get it right? Because the Packers frequently do. You know what I mean? Like there's certain teams that just get it right a lot. They've got to, considering all the money on the defensive side.
7:49Rich Eisen:And all the free agents coming. I hear you. But there's going to be, at some point, all the pieces land, and there should be some really good defensive-minded head coaches who don't get another head coaching job somewhere else. That might be a perfect spot for Green Bay. The only thing, though, is that you bring them in, and you know that you're going to be looking for a new defensive coordinator in a year. That's true. Thanks for the call, Georgianna. I appreciate it. They're in Florida. you know like that's why chris long was talking earlier about a cheat code by a cheat code he means having a coordinator that you know you're not going to lose to a head coaching job somewhere else because either a they've aged out of the role or b they've had too many opportunities and aren't going to get another one because of how poorly it's gone and their opportunities to be a head coach before exhibit a josh mcdan that's what he mentioned He also mentioned how Dennis Allen with the Raiders and the Saints will somebody else knock on his door again.
8:51Rich Eisen:And so Ben Johnson has got that handled. Andy Reid has had that handled for Steve Spagnuolo. Nobody's been knocking on the door to raid Andy Reid of his defensive coordinator and 100 % Super Bowl worthy sidekick. Nobody's done that. and so you know you you figure all those pieces out with the green bay packers at the end of the day you know you need to listen if you're going to hire a ceo head coach meaning two coordinators that go along and he's not calling it plays on either side of the of the football you know what happens when you have to then go back into the market and find somebody new because they keep moving on.
9:41Rich Eisen:Case in point, what's happening with the Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator? And then you wind up with a quarterback who constantly gets a new voice in his head. You know, that's what ends up happening. We'll take one more phone call. We'll take a break. And then, pardon me, Jordan Palmer is going to join us here on the program. Let's go to William in Topeka, Kansas. What's up, William? Hey, thanks for taking my call. I just wanted to bring up, well, since a lot of things have been happening in the football world, I think one thing that's gotten overshadowed a lot is the fact that the Chiefs are going to bring Eric Biennium back.
10:27and the fact of the matter is the moment he left the Chiefs offense went from number one
10:35Rich Eisen:during the year we defeated the Eagles to middle of the pack like 15th or 16th and it isn't necessarily about his play calling ability because that's not what the OC in Kansas City does I think It has everything to do with his manner of discipline and how he holds players accountable. And Travis Kelsey was talking about it last night in Miami. And I think, assuming Mahomes can come back at full strength before late September, the Chiefs are going to go right back to the Super Bowl because of Eric Biennium. Well, we need to see what they also do with their roster, William. And thank you for the call.
11:14Rich Eisen:I think Eric Biennium coming back, we will find out if he was, in fact, some of the missing special sauce. They did still win 15 games last year, make it to the Super Bowl. But we do need to see what they're going to do with their roster. Does Kelsey come back to? When does Mahomes come back? What do they do with the line? You know, there's still a lot of questions about the Kansas City Chiefs. All right, we're going to take a break. We'll come back. We'll get Jordan Palmer on the horn and then overreaction Monday on a Tuesday. That's still to come here.
11:48Rich Eisen:The Rich Isis Show Podcast.

Good to have Jordan Palmer, our quarterback guru, quarterback coaching consultant back here on the program. Good to see you, Jordan. How are you? I'm doing great. Sorry for being tardy. I appreciate you guys just being absolute pros. You're the man. And then, Rich, always finding a way to connect it back to how you're the centerpiece of NFL history, major moves. Yeah, you have an amazing way of tying it all back to... I'm going to show it to you on my mug. I never disagree either, though.
14:39Rich Eisen:I never disagree. There's an I in my first and last name, Jordan. There you go. There you go. There's no me in it, I don't think. Nope. Nope. That's what you've got. That's what you've got. All right, Jordan. I give you the floor on Jared Stidham, what you know and what you think. Yeah. Boy, I hate the way that he's getting his first start. You know, I've known Bo Nix since he was a little guy, since he was a sophomore in high school. and I'm such a fan of what Bo's done. But, you know, for the audience, I texted Rich and go, hey, I got some thoughts on this. Because I think Stidham, not right now, but for the last two or three years, is one of the best kept secrets, most unknown, high-quality player, insert other line that makes sense and is congruent with those statements.
15:30But I don't think anybody knows until this weekend how good Jarrett Stidham is. and not because I've known him since he was little and spent a lot of time with them. But I think there's some data here. You know, you go back to those two starts that he had in, well, let me go back earlier than that. So he was drafted in the fourth round in New England to back up Brady. And that offense at that time, it was not just Tom Brady being a great player. That was like year nine, I believe. It was year nine or 11 of Josh McDaniels and Tom Brady running that offense together. and Brady at that time was in year whatever, 16, 17, something like that.
16:09So when you have a fourth-round pick rookie come in and win the number two job, it is not because you throw it good. It's because you learned the offense. It's because we can actually put you in a game, and you can run our offense. Well, let's go back before that. What colleges did Jarrett Stidham play at? I'll save you the airtime here, and so I'll let you guys guess. Auburn. Yeah, he went to Auburn, but he started at Baylor. So if you think about the offenses that he learned before he got to the NFL, he ran, I draw a blank on his name, the guy that got in, Art Bryles. He ran that system, which was a high, Art Bryles came from high school.
16:45So that was a high school offense, no progressions, no responsibility to the line of scrimmage, no protection accountability. Then he played for Gus Malzahn, who outside of Cam Newton, I haven't seen that offense explode. so he entered into the league and i did jared's draft prep and i would say as far behind anybody as i've ever had in terms of understanding offense okay he went from that to making the new england patriots comfortable with him being the two with tom brady in his ninth year of i mean that is like that's like walking into calculus but you're only in fifth grade and then learning calculus okay so that's how he entered the league yes um he played a little bit didn't play well in New England, but what happened when Josh McDaniels got the head coaching job with Raiders?
17:30The first transaction was trading for Jarrett Stidham. Okay. Not really known about. Then when he goes to Denver and he's there and then you got Russell kind of sliding and then you got Sean Payton coming in. I mean, they paid him 15 million bucks to go there. I don't know, but I think he's like one of the highest paid backups in the league. And then last year, I can't say who, but there was a team that offered a pretty good ransom for him to trade and they wouldn't trade him. So they know what they got there. And I think the guys on the team know what they got there. And outside of making predictions in the game, I think if Drake may and Jarrett Stidham both play at their best, I don't think it's much different.
18:08And I don't really see Jarrett having a floor because the two starts that he did have in the Raiders, we can say are irrelevant, but he shredded the Patriot. He shredded the chiefs and then he shredded the Niners. And those are the two teams that played in the Superbowl that year. So I actually, I hate the way this has happened, but optimistic is an understatement when I think about how well Jarrett Sidney might play this
18:28Rich Eisen:weekend yeah because Drake May is an MVP maybe you know what I mean like what you just said yeah I mean that's a high highs and the low lows how many tournaments they have in the last two weeks and I am a huge Drake May fan right huge Drake May fan so I'm just saying the high high if they're both you know if you take the ceiling and the floor I think their ceilings are sort of commiserate and Jarrett can run too um I just don't see Jarrett in this point in his career or the floor being that low in this big of a game. What do you think Sean Payton's doing with him right now and for this week? I think they're running their offense, getting timing with certain guys that you don't get during the season.
19:04Then flip it over. If I had to pick one guy to come up with a game plan and call a game this weekend, and I was getting my first start in three years, I'd pick Sean Payton or maybe one other guy.
19:16Rich Eisen:Well, McVay did it with Baker in just 48 hours, right? Shanahan, the same people you guys would pick. I'm just saying he's on a short list of people that you would go, all right, if I'm getting thrown into that situation, I want this person coming up with the game plan and this person calling it. Do we need to have you pulled over and sobriety tested right now, Jordan? Because that's what some people are thinking. I'm only giving voice because you're really, I mean, you are really painting a rosy picture of something that normally would not be. I mean, I've got all sorts of stats here about somebody with his lack of experience, not just career-wise, but just in recent memory, getting a start like this, not performing well.
19:56Rich Eisen:Against, by the way, a Patriots team that made C.J. Stroud look very, very, what's the word for it, bad. It's the only other way to put it. Yeah, you know, I think I just, I'm in this so deep. I just don't look at stats and history as much. There's a ton of stuff I don't know anything about. There's a bunch of players I don't know anything about. When I got guys that I do know a lot about, and you start to go, okay, how could I predict success this weekend for Jarrett, which is what I'm doing in the comment section is going to be awesome. But I'm going to go back and read it on Monday. I'm not going to go in your comment section now.
20:30I'm going to go back on Monday. And I go, okay, what would lead me to believe and have that confidence? And I even go back to college and I think about like, well, he's a fourth-round pick and he was at Auburn. They didn't win a national championship. If you go back and look up his best games at Auburn, it was like winning the Iron Bowl and beating Georgia. and they were both the number one team in the country when he beat them. And so his history of doing this and going back and being around these types of situations, this is a massive situation. This is a Disney movie if this guy goes 2-0. But he's got the makings.
21:03He's got to go out there and play well. I just don't have concerns with him handling the moment, running the offense, throwing the ball accurately, or getting himself out of bad situations. And honestly, you've got to go 4-4-4 if you're going to play well this weekend in those categories. Okay.
21:16Rich Eisen:What do you think about Darnold and Stafford in that game, Jordan? Man, this is, I think it's the two best teams playing. Sometimes it plays out that way. But this is a, there's the chess game between McVay and McDonald. You know, when you got Shanahan and McVay in that division, you got to have somebody who can, you can't hire a coach who's just going to try and outscore him and hope that you get the next Shanahan or McVay. So John Schneider did an unbelievable job with the hire of McDonald, somebody who is not going to back down to scheming against those guys and not going to try and slow down those offenses, but going to try and attack those offenses, and then to get the personnel that they've gotten the last few years on defense.
22:02The last defense in the league I would want to play against right now is the Seattle Seahawks in Seattle. And both quarterbacks have showed that when they're at their best, they're MVP candidates, and they both have had games where they've turned it over. They both have four interception games this season. Sam's was against L.A., but I think we're going to see the two best teams in the league play their best, and I think this comes down to some similar situation that we saw the last time they played. I don't know if it's the two-point conversion walk-off game winner, but I think this is going to be an absolute duel to the end, and I like the Seahawks here.
22:38I mean, I drink the Kool-Aid. Sam's a client of mine, but I still like the Seahawks, and I think even without Charbonnet this week, That's going to be tough, but they've had a two-headed monster running back by committee all year. So it's just going to be on Kenneth Walker to step up. And then for them to scheme in more high percentage throws so that they would replace essentially another five to six carries. and I trust Kubiak to design that and have some quick passing game kind of replace, call it 5-10 % of what the running game would have been in this game but they've got to be high completion percentage throws with opportunities to get yards after the catch so I think this is going to be one of the most fascinating games to watch I've seen in a while because both defensive coordinators, both offensive coordinators are A-plus in every category and they both have teams that are really disciplined do the right thing, play selflessly it's not the superstar playmakers that are on the field this weekend.
23:40It's just the execution that we're going to see by, I think, the two best teams.
23:43Rich Eisen:A couple minutes left with you, Jordan Palmer, so you can get at least the feeling back in your hands. You've been holding your iPad this entire time out there in the practice field. I appreciate that. He would never say it. So if you don't mind speaking on his behalf, which I'm sure you don't really want to do, but I'm going to ask you to do it. What would it mean to Sam Darnold if he's the first quarterback of his draft class to play in the Super Bowl? What do you think? I think nothing. Really? I think nothing. Come on. Going to a Super Bowl would mean the world. Winning a Super Bowl would mean the world.

24:15So this is an interesting discussion. Go back to Sam Darnold's draft class. I had him and Josh. One of the things from a psychological perspective when I work with quarterbacks, elite guys at that level, is I need to figure out what motivates them. So people are largely in one of two groups. They are internally motivated or externally motivated. So the example would be, Sam Darnold is internally motivated. So I'm not a strength coach and I don't run guys, but let's say that we had a hard workout and I wanted them to get 12 reps of something hard. If I wanted Sam to try and get 12, I would tell Sam, last time you got 11, see if you can get 12.
24:51Josh is more externally motivated. Doesn't really care what he did last time. He just wants to beat that guy. So I would tell Josh, Sam just got 11, okay? Neither is right or wrong, by the way. Right. Neither is good or bad. Sure. But it's important as a coach, and I would say all the way down to my first and second grade flag team, to understand what motivates guys. Sam is incredibly internally motivated. So he is motivated, I think, to get to the Super Bowl and win it because of how hard he's worked, because of his teammates, because of the sacrifice, his family, and all the cliche things that's true of everybody.
25:23But other guys, and it's not wrong, would want to be the first and would want to win before that guy and would want to have more success than that guy. Um, so that's why my answer is what would it mean for him to be the first guy of that draft class? I think nothing.
25:39Rich Eisen:So then knowing Josh Allen, as well as you do, um, who would you counsel the bills to go higher is his next head coach. And if you want to just give me the type, go for it. You want to give me a name? Obviously I'll take it. What do you think? Yeah, I gotta, I gotta avoid names here a minute, But I think somebody, you know, the media is going to talk through, you know, how successful Sean McDermott was. And so they have to be more successful than that. You can't have somebody who hasn't. I don't know that it comes down to that. I think they have, I will say, the most unique culture in the NFL.
26:14That's a subjective opinion. I don't know every single culture. But, man, they got something special. And you hear guys talk about it. You hear Joey Bosa and these guys that come and go. And Vaughn Miller was talking about it. But I've lived it. I've thrown with these guys have been out with these guys a ton, weddings and stuff like that. It is a unique culture. So one, that's the most important thing. If somebody's been to one, three Super Bowls, but not a culture guy, I don't even think that person's getting an interview. Okay. So the culture that they built, there's no point in changing it.
26:42Okay. That's not the problem. And then I think you need somebody who says, my fastball as a coach is whatever they determined was not Sean McDermott's, whether you want to talk about late game management, any of these different situations. You want somebody where that's their fastball. And then there's some things you probably want to change on the rest of the staff. And then there's some things you probably don't want to change on the rest of that staff. And a quick shout out to one of my all-time favorite coaches, Aaron Cromer, retired as the O-line coach. I would say after a long, incredible career, he had a huge impact on me.
27:17He's stepping into retirement. And so honestly, head coach is massive, but they need to get an O-line coach in there too, because that's the best teacher I was ever around at the O-line position. So there's a lot of things they got to address there, but somebody needs to come in and add to the culture, not change it. And somebody needs to come in and be world-class at situational management. And then, you know, the messaging of coaches the year round, they don't just get up in front of the team and wing it and talk. the messaging that's curated and i know teams that hire people to help them do this um the this guy needs to be an incredible messenger and hold everybody accountable um and the more they can do that and allow these guys to play free and let that culture be the reason they win um i i definitely in buffalo i trust i know there's a lot on the internet right now i have a lot of trust in brandon bean i think he's fantastic and uh i think they're going to be able to get a super bowl here soon uh with these very big decisions they got to make so it doesn't have to be somebody who's in
28:11Rich Eisen:Josh's ear and calls the plays for him? Doesn't have to be? I don't know specifically what he wants, but Josh has ran several systems by now. They ran the ball so well this year. You know, Josh is another guy that I don't think he cared about winning another MVP. It was all Super Bowl or bust, so the fact that they were running the ball as well as they were and weren't putting up the passing yardage, I thought that was probably irrelevant for Josh because at this point in his career, what he's done, what he's made, is all, it's all about winning a Super Bowl. And so these are big decisions that they got to make.
28:44Rich Eisen:Last one for you. Fernando Mendoza, is he the first overall pick in the National Football League draft? Jordan. You know, I don't know enough about these pass rushers and these other guys at the top, but I think Fernando can come in early and have success. Been around him a lot. Talked to him, got to meet him right when he was on his way to Cal. And so watching this thing rise, I am, I was early on Fernando Mendoza in terms of thinking that this guy's going to be special. And, you know, the goofiness that you see in the interviews, that's him. He's as pure as they come. And everybody loves him, by the way.
29:18His teammates love him. I think it's, you know, it's funny. The comment sections are pretty funny on interviews that he does, but the reality is his teammates love him. And that's a huge piece to be able to, you know, there's what he's done this season, the Heisman, the national championship. there's those things that can dictate your draft stock and so it can be great for your career but then there's just the reps that you get that Heisman speech is people watch more more people watch the Heisman speech than they watch the NFL Hall of Fame speeches I mean that's that's the biggest stage you'll have I've helped a lot of guys write their speech and like this is this is your moment right and so the experience of going through that the experience of handling these playoffs uh to go back home where he's from the school it didn't offer him you know and then beat them there and come back and really be the reason you win.
30:06It's also the reps, not just what it does for your draft stock. It's those types of reps handling those moments that lead me to believe that you can have success earlier in your career. And we're seeing some guys right now, some young quarterbacks played a high level who've had similar success.
30:23Rich Eisen:Jordan, thanks for the time, man. Appreciate you getting off the practice field, hopping on for a few minutes here. And on behalf of all Denver Broncos fans, thanks for coming on. Appreciate it. Yeah, I mean, this is one of the most anticipated weekends of football I've ever had. So I can't wait to watch these guys go down. And then read the Rich Eisen Show comments section on Monday. Monday. Or maybe I'll do overreaction Tuesday on Monday. I don't know how you guys do it around here. Jordan Palmer knows the program, which is part of the reason why we love him. Oh, by the way, congrats to your brother on everything going on with him coaching it up.
30:55There's another internally motivated person who could care less about the fact that he was voted national coach of the year. his first time ever coaching. This is not a guy who ran a great 8th grade and 7th grade football program. This is a guy who stepped into coaching for the first time. But that's another... Sam and Carson have known Carson my whole life and Sam since he was 14. They're eerily similar. Internally motivated. Carson's worried about next year.
31:17Rich Eisen:Okay. Jordan, you're the man. We'll chat soon. Thanks, guys. Ladies and gentlemen, Jordan Palmer, founder of QB Summit. And he's going back to coach some of his charges out there on the field.
31:30Rich Eisen:He thinks Jared Stidham is ready to roll. We shall see because that's a defense that's coming in that's been marauding Justin Herbert and C.J. Stroud. It's the only way to put it. Number one in postseason pressures. They've been doing it. We'll see what happens. They do have two all-pro first-teamers on that offensive line in bowls and minors. Here we go, man. And a defense. And a defense. That is no joke. And a Jared Stidham quarterback that has not had a lot of reps. Had a no-joke defense. Well, they made your quarterback fumble like four times. Yeah, what was the final score? I'm just saying.
32:10Rich Eisen:Your quarterback didn't play that well. Okay. You know what we're going to do? We'll take a break. We'll check in on what's going on with the Giants, and then an overreaction Monday on a Tuesday. I mean, Jordan previewed it. He teased it. We're going to do it. That's next on The Rich Eisen Show. The Rich Eisen Show, the podcast.

33:42Rich Eisen:Hyundai Hope on Wheels is a remarkable campaign. You may not know about it, even though I love talking about it every single day. Over 27 years now, every Hyundai sold has helped fund life-saving pediatric cancer research. together with over 850 dealers nationwide. They've raised more than$277 million, supporting over 25 ,000 kids in their fight against cancer. Visit HyundaiUSA.com and search Hyundai Hope on Wheels to learn more. At Hyundai, Hope isn't optional. It comes standard. Okay, so we talked earlier, there's four head coaching jobs that have been filled. Six more to go. Crazy. Because they keep opening them up.
34:21Rich Eisen:Now we're done, right? Now we're done. Denver's not doing it. Nobody's doing it. Now we're done. Now we're done. Never say never. But never. And one by one, those that have been filled were getting press conferences. Giants were first to fill the job with John Harbaugh. He's the first to hold a press conference today at the Giants HQ in New Jersey. It's a profound honor to be entrusted with the responsibility of coaching the New York football giants. My dad told me that they were the New York football giants. They were just the giants. They were the New York football giants. Right, Dad? All the way back.
35:05Rich Eisen:One of the most iconic franchises in all of sports. I wanted this job. I think I told you that, Mr. Mayor. I wanted this job. I wanted this job. And to be on the biggest stage in the biggest sport. I know the challenges. I understand the expectations. I know the fans are hungry for a winner. We're here with one mission, to become, to earn the right to be called the world champions in New York. And that's what we plan to do. It's just wild for me being a native New Yorker that this guy is the first Giants head coach to be named with a ring already won and in his pocket. It never happened before.
35:57Rich Eisen:Parcells started his career there. Coughlin came in, I guess, a ring from the Parcells staff, but not as a head coach. He came in with a bunch of wins from Jacksonville. Sure did. and he left with two and the Giants really haven't done very much except one playoff season since then with McAdoo and then one with Dayball where they beat the Minnesota Vikings but that win gave them a bit of fool's gold where they extended Daniel Jones and franchise tagged Saquon and no now they got dart there's the here and now and Harbaugh was asked if Dart was part of the reason why he did want the Giants job? You build your team around your quarterback.
36:46I mean, you build your team around your players and what they do well. And I like the way he plays. I mean, I like his talent, skill set, all the things he's accomplished.
36:54Rich Eisen:But more than that, I like who he is and what he's about. To me, he's about football. I mean, this young guy loves football. He wants to talk football all the time. And, you know, and that's kind of what I like doing too. So I think we're going to have a lot of great conversations. And I can't wait to get started with him. He sounds just like his brother there who says, you know, when I chatted with Jim before the Chargers Texans game, anytime you try to get under these Jim's hood about his process, about what's his secret sauce is, he says, I love football. And I love talking football. And football loves me.
37:28Rich Eisen:So I love people who love football. Like that's what he sounds like. And sometimes it is just that simple when you're just trying to create a culture. but the most important thing that I hear from the Giants fan base is that John is coming and is changing the way the Giants are doing their business and that's something that needed to be changed to get some sort of a fundamental change in the wins and losses around there. And that included, and that's part of the hang-up that happened because John Harbaugh never reported to Eric DaCosta, the general manager in Baltimore. where he reported straight to the boss and Steve Bishotti, and he was trying to get that with the Giants, and he did.
38:09Rich Eisen:He reports to ownership, not Joe Shane, and he has final say on personnel. And Joe Shane doesn't have that anymore, and the GM was asked about that. Yeah, and I'm not worried about that. Everywhere I've been, I've been in the league for 26 years, so everywhere I've been, the head coach and general manager work together. That's the only way it's going to work. And get on the same page, go through the process. Again, we've done it everywhere I've been. I'm not worried about it. Like you said, that's just, you know, something on a piece of paper doesn't matter. We need to work together and we're going to come to the final conclusion.
38:39And it's always going to be about what's best for the New York Giants. So I have no problem with that. And, you know, I'm looking forward to working with him.
38:45Rich Eisen:Yeah. John's going to have to be collaborative, says Joe Shane. And I'm sure John will say, Hey Joe, my thumbs on the scale. I got a bigger thumb than you. And I don't think there's anybody in the Giants fan base that has a problem with that. No, definitely not at all. But it's for anybody, Anybody who sit here and think Joe Shane is delusional that it's not going to work out. I disagree with that. I mean, Harbaugh's just going to make it work. Certainly if the owners have a liking for Joe. And so he's there. And it's John Harbaugh's world, though. And Giants fans, you wanted it. You got it. And they probably can't believe that they do.
39:25Rich Eisen:It's a Tuesday. It's time for Overreaction Monday on a Tuesday. Hit it. That was terrible. That was crap. That was garbage. This place sucked. Overreaction. Mondays. Monday. On a Tuesday. All right, Chris. We very rarely finish the show with this, but it's just been such a busy show. Yeah, busy show, busy week, busy playoffs. It's all fun. How you guys doing? Everybody good? Yeah. I'm all right. You know, the natty is cool and all, right? But, like, imagine what Signetti could do with Josh Allen. The Bills should go after Kurt Signetti. No doubt. Everybody should go after him. Come on, man. He says he's not interested.
40:04Rich Eisen:He said he's not a football, an NFL guy. That he had an opportunity to do it years ago, and he is where he is, and I'm sure he is well compensated where he is, and he's loved where he is. $25 million a year gets me. But I'm telling you, if I am an owner of a National Football League team with an opening, I am 100 % calling him up, a Pittsburgh guy, and saying, hey, if the Steelers aren't going to knock on your door or we're just up the road, 100 % I'd do that. 100 % I'd do that. I don't think he's interested, though. As much as I keep trying to drum this thing up, the Raiders can draft his guy.
40:48Rich Eisen:They could just take the Signetti Mendoza show on the road. He could have a nice residency there on the strip. And both of them go home. I'm in. It's like he's already climbed that. Sick, Fried, and Roy. Yeah. Signetti and Mendoza without the Tigers. Unless it's the Bengals. Or bring them back. I don't know. The Bengals come in town. Why not? I don't know. What else? Not an overreaction. What else you got? All right. Well, let's go to his quarterback. We know he's going to Raider Nation. He's going to be hooked up with Tom Brady. And maybe who knows the head coach. The Raiders are going to be over 500 next year.
41:24Rich Eisen:All right. That's an overreaction, sir. That's an overreaction, sir. The cupboard is bare outside of. Jenty, baby. I know Jenty. And I know. Hawk Bowers. I got it. It's not bare, bare. Max Crosby. It's not bare, bare. It's a 53-man roster, sir. And whoever goes there is going to have to work some magic to have a six-win season, a seven-win season. I'd love nothing but success for this guy, as you know. He's perfect for the opportunity there in Las Vegas. and I just hope whoever coaches him up and everybody in the fan base there just remain patient he's really really good but it might not be in year one Patriots won four games overreaction I know that was year one of Gerard Mayo and Drake May four games wins that's it so year two could be a big league what else look we know a lot about the bills this week and the roster and this, that, and the other.
42:25Rich Eisen:But there is a disgruntled wide receiver in Philadelphia who needs a new home, and the Bills should do whatever it takes to get A.J. Brown. I love it. But they don't pay receivers 30 million bucks a year. They just don't do it. Well, start doing it. I understand that. But the guy who didn't do it or wouldn't do it and needed to go through all of training camp to get James Cook signed to a contract just got a promotion. So$30 million a year, it ain't it. But I would love to see someone like A.J. Brown for Josh Allen. Just see what it looks like. This one time, you know, Tom got Randy Moss. Look what happened.
43:10Rich Eisen:That one time he got somebody. A lot of touchdowns. A lot of wins. Did Steph Diggs not play? No, I got you. You're right. You're right. Steph digs with muscles. You're right. We do forget that. I'm just saying. It didn't work out there either. It didn't work out. I mean, they won a lot of games. I'm with you, too. I just don't think that's their M.O. All right. All right. We mentioned it. Four jobs filled. Giants, Falcons, Titans, Dolphins. At least two of them are going to win a playoff game next year.
43:46Yeah.
43:46Rich Eisen:I mean, the Falcons tie breaks didn't go their way. so they had the same record as the division winner, so that makes sense. And I imagine you're looking at the Giants? I think so, yeah. Yeah. I mean, the Dolphins could do it, too. Who is their quarterback? I got it. I understand. Jeff Halfley, how he's going to handle the Tua situation is going to be fascinating. I wonder what was discussed in those meetings with ownership and Troy Aikman, who had a seat at the table. I'm fascinated to hear what Jeff Halfley's going to say when we're, I bet you it's going to be open competition. We're here, fresh start for everybody, even though he knows too has got to be his guy financially.
44:29Rich Eisen:I mean, what a massive cap-eating situation that would be to start things off for the Dolphins. That said, look at what Denver did. They drafted somebody and with a massive cap-eating situation, they're the one seed going into this weekend. And the Titans are a tall order, certainly with the Texans and the Jaguars and the Colts looking as well as they did this year. So I don't think that's an overreaction. Makes sense. All right, a couple more. I'll just talk my way through it. Chris Long mentioned this earlier. You know, look, as a Pats fan, excited about what could be, but Drake May is still a little too careless with the ball to be the reason New England wins the Super Bowl this year.
45:09Rich Eisen:Are you reverse jinxing it with your own overreaction Monday subject matter? I mean, he's fumbled a lot. I don't look at him and think he is in any reason, way shape or form going to be the one that holds them back. Stop fumbling. No, I just think on any given Sunday, they could just get beat. It's that simple. You know, I don't look at Drake May and say, at some point, he's going to hit his head on the ceiling. I don't sit there and think that for a split second. So I'll call this an overreaction since that's what you're looking for. I'm sort of in a giving mood.
45:46Rich Eisen:Following up with Jordan Palmer said, You know what, I'm thinking about this situation with Denver this weekend. And, like, Jared Stidham is going to be fine and won't be to blame if the Broncos lose on Sunday. I'll buy that one, too. You didn't go up on that either, Rich. I'll buy that one, too, huh? He didn't go high register on it. He did. I don't think he did. Kind of. No, I think he is going to be fine and won't be to blame if the Broncos lose on Sunday. The Broncos defensively gave up 30 points to Josh Allen, who was missing throws and turned it over as many times as he did. And they still scored 30.
46:20Rich Eisen:So, yeah, I'll say that if the Broncos lose, it won't because Sidham, his stat line, he gave too many short fields. Let's put it this way. If he's going to be up by three deep in his own end and there's going to be a first down play that blows up in his face and he's being sacked, He won't just pull a pin and throw a grenade like C.J. Stroud did in the middle of the Patriots defense. That he won't do. Can't play worse than Stroud on Sunday. What else you got over there? All right, last one. While these offensive coordinator jobs are still open, teams need to call our boy, Kurt Warner, to fill one of these jobs.
46:58Rich Eisen:No, get out of here. Come on. I can't wait to ask him about this. He's ours. Get out of here. Kurt would be awesome. These teams need to utilize his knowledge. Let's go. I'm sure he's giving them their knowledge while he stays put in NFL Network. How dare you? Rich, let's get Kurt paid. No, I think he's fine. I've been to his house. Just saying. What are you trying to do to me? Get Kurt again. I hang with you too much for you to try and break up another family of mine. Get out of here. Thanks for listening to the Rich Eisen Show podcast.
