In short
Rich Eisen Show episode featuring NFL analyst Mark Sanchez discussing week-one storylines, including Denver’s QB Cam Ward debut, Bo Nix’s sophomore expectations, Caleb Williams’ film-study guidance (from Seth Wickersham’s upcoming book), and broader coaching/offense questions (Ben Johnson’s Lions departure). Also includes debate about Dallas Cowboys/Micah Parsons contract dispute and Jerry Jones’ relationship with Stephen A. Smith, plus early talk with Michael Irvin about a Netflix Cowboys documentary.
Guests (backgrounds)
Mark Sanchez (Fox Sports NFL analyst; former USC and NFL QB for Jets/Eagles). Michael Irvin (Pro Football Hall of Famer; Cowboys legend). Seth Wickersham (ESPN senior writer; author of quarterback-focused reporting). Adam Ray (comedian; appears later).
Key claims
Denver’s continuity and Sean Payton’s belief make the Broncos a division contender; Bo Nix must prove “franchise guy” status. Caleb Williams lacked coaching guidance on what film to watch; Ben Johnson’s intense protocol approach is a contrast. Lions can still succeed without Ben Johnson due to Johnny Morton’s intensity, but defense coordinator transition is a concern. Cowboys/Micah Parsons dispute may hinge on agent involvement and back-injury second opinions.
Notable examples
Sanchez’s own 2009 Jets debut vs. Houston (Joe Namath present); Jets/Fields needing 30+ rushes and Aaron Glenn defense; Lions “Detroit vs the world” culture; Micah Parsons’ reported back second opinion and Jerry Jones’ stance.

0:36Rich Eisen:That's new. It can help you with practically anything on the web, like restoring a vintage motorcycle from a 50-page restoration block, or finally break down that long article you've had open for weeks. Gemini and Chrome is here for it. Ready to make anything online make sense? There's no place like Chrome. Check responses set up required, compatibility and availability varies 18+. This is the Rich Eisen Show. What was it called? The Rich Eisen Show. Bo loads it up. Franklin makes the catch. Live from the Rich Eisen Show studio in Los Angeles. True breeze. Five other guys went. Bo was kind of viewed wrongly.
1:10Rich Eisen:When Sean Payton told me I really wanted Bo Nix, next to or above all these other guys. Like, I believe that. Today's guests. NFL on Fox analyst Mark Sanchez. Pro Football Hall of Famer Michael Irvin. ESPN senior writer Seth Wickersham comedian Adam Ray and now it's Rich Eisen well that's correct it's the Rich Eisen Show live on the Roku Sports Channel live on the Infinity Sports Network Odyssey, Sirius XM and more we say hello to all of you out there we're four wide today with two in studio guests though it's zooming in Mark Sanchez of Fox Sports formerly of USC New York Jets, Philadelphia Eagles.
1:57Rich Eisen:Yes, sir. Mark, can I have your cheese fries? It's one of our longest standing drops. Mike, I didn't expect you to have. Oh, you have an 11-year-old drop? Mark, I want you to have my cheese fries. That was very good. That was quick. I got that. 11-year-old drop here on the program. He's first up on the show, and then Michael Irvin will be second. We're going to go down the old deep dive of the new Netflix documentary that you guys went to the premiere of a couple of weeks ago. It's so good. And, of course, Michael's the one who had Jerry Jones on his show a couple weeks ago with the soundbite that pays of him saying that Micah's agent told the Cowboys to take the offer that apparently he had put on the table for Micah where the sun doesn't shine and blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.
2:48Rich Eisen:Yada, yada, yada. He's still on sign. And it's a week until football gets played for the Cowboys and the Eagles. So Micah is going to be front and center of a conversation starting hour number two of the program. American Kings, the biography of the quarterback. Seth Wickersham is going to come in studio here. All right. Seth is the one who broke the news that the Chicago Bears and their staff didn't tell Caleb Williams how to watch film. That's in this book. So Seth's going to join us in the middle of hour number two. And then Adam Ray, one of our favorites, going to be showing back up here in studio in hour number three, as himself, not Dr.
3:25Rich Eisen:Phil. He will be here. And it's a fun show. You at 844-204-RICH, number to dial. Good to see you over there, Christopher Brockman. How are you, sir? Rich, I am excellent. How are you, friend? I am doing well. DJ Mikey D is in D's nuts. Good to see you. Good to see you. Do you have nothing to say? Good morning, Rich. We're on a radio show. I can't believe I can tell our audio executive. They can't see you waving. You know, it was just like I gave you a little. I know that, but people were driving around in their cars. They didn't think I acknowledged you. I'm sorry. They can't hear the wave. You know, it was like, come on.
3:55It's all good.
3:56Rich Eisen:Feel the TJ. What's going on, sir? How are you? You know, I had to break out this Cowboys-inspired shirt of Aikman, Smith, Irvin, and Jimmy Johnson the day. That was the day, the night that Jimmy went into the Ring of Honor finally, right? And the moment that he screamed out, how about the Cowboys? How about the Cowboys? And that moment was right here in this shirt. Kind of felt that way after my first SportsCenter in 22 years a week and a half ago. I appreciate, again, Brian Curtis who wrote a, he was embedded with me for that SportsCenter a couple Mondays ago, and he just wrote a feature about it in The Ringer and appreciated that.
4:29Rich Eisen:Check it out, it's so good. That deep dive, as they say in the business, that dropped today. In a week's time, the Dallas Cowboys and the Philadelphia Eagles will be playing for our viewing pleasure on NBC to kick off the 2025 season one week from tonight. One week from today, I will be conducting this show from, I can't believe I'm saying these words, from Sao Paulo, Brazil. Yeah, man. I can't believe it either. You'll be where you guys are. Unfortunately, you're there. I will be in Brazil. Once again, let me just ask one last time. Yes. Are you sure we're not going with you? I'm positive. I'm absolutely positive.
5:04Rich Eisen:You had to ask. You had to ask. Since I would be the one in charge of the plane flights and the accommodations. Yeah, we should book travel if we're going to. You're not coming. You're not going. I'm going. Just have to make sure. But one week from today, I will be sitting in Brazil. That's awesome. I'll be closer to Antarctica than you one week from today. So the reason why I bring this up is, you know, a very frozen place also exists for the Dallas Cowboys and Micah Parsons. And one week from tonight, we're going to get an answer to a question that's still quite burning. Is he going to be playing?
5:39Rich Eisen:and there's a report that's out there right now that Micah is taking a shot here at delaying the process here. By that I mean he has options. Not showing? Showing. Playing for$24 million? Not playing for$24 million. Getting on the plane next Wednesday or not? There's the back issue that apparently he has. Ooh, my back. There's a back issue apparently that he has. Backiotomy. That's not what I'm talking about. report out there that he's seeking a second opinion on his back, which is a great way to say, oh, my back. The MRI that you say is clean, I don't know. I need to see a doctor. Can you look it up and maybe yelp it in the Metroplex area?
6:24Rich Eisen:Can you Google to see? Is there a back doctor, Dr. Vincent Boombatz? Hey, Vinny. Let's see. I don't know. Mike, you know who Dr. Vinny Boombatz is, correct? He's an almost cousin that used to take care of us, that my parents would take me to. I thought his practice was in Long Island. Actually, that's an old-school Rodney Dangerfield reference. Dr. Vinny Boombats. Dr. Vinny Boombats. I'm not saying that Micah doesn't have a back injury. That's one way of saying, hey, don't blame me for not playing. It's not a contractual impasse. It's an impasse between these two discs in my back. I'm hurt. Listen, back pain is no joke, Rich.
7:07Rich Eisen:I know, and it's also something that you can't really measure either, is it? Are you going to tell me how bad I'm hurting? And they could say, oh, this MRI doesn't show any inflammation, sir. The only thing that may be inflamed is our relationship. I don't know, man. I don't know. All I know is I've never seen anything like this in my 20-something years of... You know how I handle all of these situations. And I was right about Trey Hendrickson, who we're going to hear from later on the program. And I was right about Terry McLaurin. I was right about TJ Watt. I was right about all of them, but this is going to, don't worry, it's all going to work out.
7:47Rich Eisen:This one, I kind of don't really know. You were pretty solid on your thought. And I was solid saying that it would happen. But now? Because, you know, I mean, what are you going to do here? You're going to really go into the season without, without Micah Parsons. It's not smart. Or Micah happy? Or Micah fine with his back? I don't know. Because Jerry has a certain sensibility of characterizing this. And because he told Stephen A. Smith, we always look at this as Jerry the owner is calling his employee into the office to talk contract and cut the middleman and the agent out. But as he pointed out to Stephen A.
8:30Rich Eisen:Smith, he's the general manager of the Dallas Cowboys. He just also happens to sign the checks. So if he's the general manager talking to a player, isn't that copacetic? Well, an agent still has to be part of the process. Unless I guess the player represents himself. Bobby Wagner, didn't Richard Sherman do a deal of his own? Correct. So Micah asking the agent to come in is viewed as a provocative act for whatever reason. And Jerry's not going to budge. And Micah's not going to budge, I guess. So later on, when Michael Irvin joins this program, I'm going to nominate him to be the one to do it. Oh, please, yes.
9:10Rich Eisen:Very good. Somebody. I nominated Stephen Jones the other day. And I got some people who are potentially more in the know of what's going on. of the boots on the ground in the star in the Metroplex saying a number of times that Steven wants to do something or thinks something should be done, but, you know, it's still one man's call. Daddy says no. Well, I mean, and again, I've spoken to Steven multiple times before. He refers to his dad as Jerry in conversations. In conversations. Yeah. And, you know, Steven will run the show fully one day. And I think he's excellent, by the way. that said, I was told, I don't think he's going to be the one who's stepping in.
9:57Rich Eisen:So it's got to be Michael. It's got to be someone from outside, if you will, this dispute. Because it is a dispute. Can I bring something up that I haven't brought up? Sure, go ahead. Why not? I'm not the only person, and I guess this is more so for Cowboys fans, they're a little like questioning why Jerry went on Stephen A's show when you consider that, like, this man is your biggest public detractor. This is the man who frequently just craps upon the fan base that you claim to love so much. It's like, of all people that you go to, you go to the one guy who makes his bones by constantly being like Mike Del Tuvo and putting you and this organization down.
10:35Rich Eisen:Like, that was just weird to me for some reason. Well, can I offer a couple of thoughts and pushback on it? That's why I'm coming to you. You have met Stephen A. Smith, have you not? I once. Okay, here, in the studio, right? Okay. Did you leave with the impression of like, maybe you want to break a little bread with the guy? Yeah, I want to kick it with him. Okay, right. But I think most people would say that, even if they're like roll their eyes at first take. That's number one. Number two, I do believe the two of them are actual friends. And in the same way that Jerry just wants his name talked about, that everybody says that, who's the one who talks about the name either way?
11:15Rich Eisen:Mm-hmm. Not everybody. Takes somebody's opinion of them from their public platforms and all the criticisms, whether you feel they're fair or not, or cheap shots or not. Not everybody bans that person from their stadium. Oh, I'm sorry. It's Fox's decision not to let Dave Portnoy in. Come on, bro. Dave, three of this. Excuse me. There'll be a fourth tomorrow. Come on, man. For the record. But I'm being serious, though. right not everyone is true i mean obviously i will not talk to you i will not most people are like program most people are jerry is about like spell my name right who spells their name right more than anybody else and i i and i think jerry can parse the two and i think they are tight actually i think i think oh you know that huh yeah okay yeah i mean i said for years he's a He's a closet cowboy fan.
12:15Rich Eisen:I will offer pushback on that, significant pushback on that. The closet cowboy fan? He's not a closet cowboy fan. How proud of a cowboy? God, I love him. Cooper loves it. Susie loves it. When the Cowboys lose, we just pop the phone on just to see what he's going to say. That's my point. You just proved my point. No, but again, though, Stephen's got a massive platform. Jerry, I think, you know, and him are tight. And, again, not everybody acts the way that Ohio State acted with Dave Portnoy. Or, I'm so sorry. I keep getting it wrong. Yeah. 844-204-RICH is the number to dial here on the program.
13:00Rich Eisen:This guy. What's this guy? What? This guy. Oh, I don't care if I'm never. If I never sit for the horseshoe over again, I'm never getting in. Yeah, you might be banned. Really? Yeah. Do you think so? If I showed up, what do you think? What place would Rich have an easier time getting at? The Square Garden? Oh, yeah. 100%. Ryan Day has been on this show. Not since he started losing to us. Right. Repeatedly. See, it might be the Garden at this point. Four years in a row. Yeah, it's a lot of days, right? I've seen the signs. Does the horseshoe have facial recognition like all the Dolan? No. Does it have barstool recognition?
13:40Rich Eisen:Yes. A little bit. It's a big platform. So, yeah.
13:51What?
13:52Rich Eisen:Nothing. No, I'm just talking about something. It's Petty Norton over here. It's not. It's not. This whole thing is going to go away when Tom eats ball. Gus and Joel Klatt do their thing. Gus. Oh, yeah. That's going to be great. that's going to be great will they keep a bar stool on the set empty sort of the way that Jerry Glanville used to leave tickets for Elvis will they just leave an empty seat for Portnoy next to Urban it's a good idea you gotta move on I don't know about that there's a show tomorrow There's a show tomorrow. There'll be a show tomorrow. And two days after that. No, no, no.
14:43Rich Eisen:But after that, it's over. Of course it's over. No, this is fodder. Until Portnoy shows up in other Big Ten facilities and suddenly be like, wait a minute. So who's decision? This is never going to be over, Chris. I'll be paying attention. Us Michigan folk will be paying attention. Oh, we know. Oh, yeah. We know. Oh, yeah. I can feel it. This story brought to you by Charmin. so soft. Charmin's not as soft as it used to be. Oh, gosh. Now we've got to take a break. That is not true, Mike. I'm not kidding. It's not true. I've won a bad Charmin pack. It wasn't good. It wasn't good. Speaking of chafing, I am at the turn of conversation.
15:24Rich Eisen:We keep it wrong here, Rich. I'm sorry. You're rolling the music? That's true. I can see Mark Sanchez is already zoomed in. He's probably like, I can't believe I'm joining this show. Mark Sanchez of Fox Sports will be joining us next to set the table of the National Football League season that begins one week from two nights.

Cooper Eisen, my 14-year-old son, youngest son, loves alternate jerseys. He loves alternate jerseys because he likes seeing the different ones, but he loves showing them to me because he knows I'm old school and I hate most of them. And he says to me today as I'm getting ready to leave for work, he goes, Dad, there's a whole bunch of rivalry uniforms from the NFL.
18:14Rich Eisen:Can you take, like, you want to see them? With a smile on his face. And I said, no, I'm sure I'll see them at work. Oh, you just denied your son the opportunity to show you something? I believe I was late. I'm a professional. And plus, the last thing, he's going to school. I'm like, get off your screen. You know? Like, let's focus. Wow. But this is parenting 101, Chris. You only got a five-year-old at home, but we're delaying the inevitable of me being pissed off. What am I looking at here? AFC East. What are these called? These are called rivalries. So they're going to wear them against their rivals?
18:48Rich Eisen:Each other, I guess. Dolphins first up? What are we looking at? Okay, whatever. I like that. That's sick. I like that. Why? I like that. What do you mean? That's cool looking, Rich. So you hate Oregon and all the crazy cool uniforms that they do over the years? I just like, I mean, Dan Marino wouldn't wear this. That looks fine. It's not the Jets. That's not the Jets. That's not the Jets. What is that? Well, what the Jets have done forever has not worked. So try something else. Maybe it's good. Good idea. Sorry, I know Mark is listening. The Patriots, that looks like the Colts. You look like the Indianapolis Colts.
19:22Rich Eisen:You might as well complain about the PSI in footballs. Oh, we can start a fake controversy. Cool. And scandal. It's a Northeastern. Yeah, it's a Northeastern. It looks like snow. And the Bills look like snow. It's cool. It's cool. Rich, just be cool. My bad. You know what I mean? What do we got here? did they not come back from the laundry is that what it is oh is that the what the haboob it's like sand is that the leftover from the haboob oh the rams are cool i can't wait to buy that one that was not bad that's sick that's what i mean back on the rich eisen show radio network fox sports nfl analyst and longtime quarterback uh in college and of usc and then the jets and so many other teams good to see you mark how are you sir good to see you i'm doing great i happen to like those uniforms rich mark come on man hold on put the jet one up put the jet one up mark what mark come on we'd have beat pittsburgh if we were wearing that in the championship game come on now we wouldn't have started so damn slow he knows is that really really i don't know man i prefer like the old school ones i'd rather you look i'd rather you look like nameth you know back in the day i love the throwback ones like i want to see bo nicks wear the old school john Elway you know the Broncos one the brown and yellow those were terrible no no no the orange the orange like the orange crush old school I want Marie I want the Marino stuff on Tua not whatever the heck that is that looks like something like the Marlins would wear on a Saturday against the Padres yeah or the Padres you know what are they city connect like what are we doing rich you're giving get off my lawn right now i was just gonna say that i was just gonna say because i know i know there are a bunch of hard working men and women at 345 park avenue who work their tails off on this sort of thing and i'm carping on it right now or crapping on it you know but but that's just that's me man you remember remember the the the uh color rush and i did i did a thursday night game bucks versus uh bucks versus the ram uh the rams yeah and it looked like it was ketchup versus mustard god bless my my dad may he rest in peace he was colorblind he's like he couldn't tell who was who wow i'm serious come on red mark it's the truth he's calling me up he goes i didn't know who was who he also you know was not a sports fan but But anyway, I digress.
21:56Rich Eisen:Good to see you, Mark. Jumping in, speaking of the Denver Broncos, if I'm not mistaken, your first game week one for Fox is you've got Cam Ward and the Titans and his first career start in Denver. And I'll tell you, Mark, throughout the entire summer training camp season, I would ask information men and women when they come on this program, give me the team that everybody's talking about when they're texting you from other teams about what you know and the buzz about certain teams that are going to be better than anybody might be talking about. It's the Denver Broncos. That bandwagon is jacked and full, Mark.
22:31I think some of that is from the head coach. You know, Coach Payton did a couple interviews this offseason and really believes in this group. And he's kind of leaned into that mentality of, hey, I'm not pulling any punches here. I trust this group. We signed Sertan for a reason. Our rookie quarterback got us to the playoffs. We're going to do it again. um you know i love the running back room we got jk dobbins we haven't seen a ton of them in the preseason so hopefully that's a big boost for him uh in the run game and then you know on uh on offense as well evan ingram with the acquisition of him you barely see him he only had like one catch in the preseason but apparently he's going to be one of the feature players uh so i think he's excited about that i think anytime you get a a team with i think it's like 39 returning starters or roster players, that's a lot.
23:2239 of 53 is pretty good turnaround. And almost, I think it's like 15 of 16 offensive and defensive linemen are back on the team. That continuity means a lot. So I think that's what's got them feeling that energy and that vibe in Denver that, hey, this is a team that might make a little run here at the division. And after watching the way things went down with the Chiefs later in the year last year, they're thinking hey Rasheed Rice is gone for a few games man we might we might get our shot here and we got to take advantage of it we're basically in our window it's kind of the message that Sean Payton is sending to his guys and publicly so it's it's a couple interesting storylines without giving away everything in broadcast I got my notes going already but yeah but you know the first the first round draft pick making his first start against a really tough defensive unit probably one of the top five defenses in the league, at least projected, could be number one.
24:18But going against Sertan and Benito and Zach Allen and then a Vance Joseph defense, I mean, that's a hell of a way to start a career on the road in mile high. I mean, that's serious. And then, you know, for Bo Nix, being the first-round quarterback, taking your team to the playoffs after a decade drought of playoff appearances, and now the sophomore year. Well, what can you do next? you're only as good as this next game it's the ultimate meritocracy here in the NFL so what do you got next and you're no longer a rookie so show me show me that you're the franchise guy and last year wasn't just a fluke so there's uh there's plenty going into this game I'm excited
24:55Rich Eisen:to call it well if I'm not mistaken Mark Sanchez you started your career on the road right your first career game was in Houston in Houston correct so what what do you what what do you think is going to go through Cam Ward's veins that was going through yours on that let me get the date right um september 13th 2009 2009 mark um you know i the funny story about that game is i got so excited pregame my high school coach was there my dad was there on the sidelines and then joe namath was right next to him oh baby so i'm walking out for pregame warm-ups and i'm just like oh my god two of my heroes and then the hero for the new york jets of all time are just standing there hanging out and so i go over and talk to him then i go through my warm-up routine and i go to get dressed i didn't even take my ankles i forgot i just didn't even think about it and i've paid my ankles for every game since i was a little guy i just didn't even think about it went out and played the game uh we won and i got to throw my first touchdown pass to chauncey stuckey and um i guess the rest was history rex was upset that i did throw the interception because it ruin the shutout that was his first comment after the game i love it he said i could have had a shutout in my first game i was like i think we won i think we're good but okay personal stats noted yep um so it was just uh it's a blur and for for those young guys the best you can put the blinders on uh almost like a uh like one of those prize racehorses those thoroughbreds you know they put the blinders on they get in there you know from the paddock to their little lane and don't worry about anything else.
26:34Don't look to the left. Don't look to the right. Trust your feet, trust your eyes. And to the best of your ability, try and have fun. I know it's a chaotic environment. At the end, you'll look back and kind of take a breath and say, man, that was a real rush. What a thrill. What an enjoyable experience for me, my family, everybody that I know that helped me get here. I think he'll get there at some point. But in the moment, it's really hard to look back at that. And I think the onus is on Brian Callahan, the head coach and coordinator. Give him some breather plays. Let him stack a couple completions early in the game.
27:10Some easy ones, just a quick little flat route, a slant route, something on the move, a wide receiver screen, tight end screen, just to kind of get a breath. Some of those, they call them breather plays because you know where the ball is going. The quarterback doesn't have to think too much. And the less he's going to have to drop back, get to his third or fourth read, make a move in the pocket, and throw an accurate ball with a guy draped all over somebody, the better he's going to be in his first start. Eventually, he's going to have to do it more and more, and he might have to do it to win the game.

27:39But you probably don't want to major in that in his first start. But I think they'll be up for the challenge.
27:45Rich Eisen:Yeah, I mean, and again, doing it in Tennessee is one thing. You did it in New York. I did not know. It's just like, there's Joe Namath. You mean the guy that everybody in the fan base keeps talking about because nobody's done anything pretty much at the position of significance like that since. And, you know, on the other side of things for the Giants, I'm wondering, you know, advice for Jackson Dart, who is not going to get the week one start. And I don't know how much preseason action you saw of him, Mark, but he does seem to have this swagger. And I kind of understand why the Giants are like, Let's protect the swagger when we're starting at Washington, at Dallas, home for Kansas City, home for the Chargers, with a trip to Philadelphia after a trip to Denver before Philadelphia comes to us.
28:34Rich Eisen:I just gave you almost half of the Giants' schedule right there. I kind of understand why the Giants are doing it. I give you the floor on that subject matter. Well, I think when it comes to starting a rookie, I think part of it is the player, and the other important factor is the team. Is the team ready to support a young player like this that we will inevitably have to win games in spite of him because he's going to turn the ball over, he's going to make mistakes. Can we do it with the supporting cast around him? For the Giants at this point, I'd say their defense is pretty nails. I love especially their first and second level with all the guys they got rushing up front and Dexter Lawrence and Burns.
29:20You know, they got Thibodeau. They got everything you want as a pass rushing group. And then at the backer level, okay, okay, I love what he's done over there, coming over from Indy and really making a name for himself. I love their defense. They're back in solid, so they're good. On offense, I just don't know if they're ready to support Jackson Dar as a rookie the entirety of a season, the entirety of a game. I think he'll get some plays. I think they'll have some stuff designed for him, maybe some quarterback design runs maybe some of the rpo game but i don't see that team as prepared for um you know a rookie to to take that base of the franchise role starting day one the way the jets were positioned maybe in 2009 they had to win some games because uh in spite of me because i wasn't playing well my rookie year it wasn't all sunshine and rainbows we end up making the playoffs late but and then we we have a pretty good little playoff run and my numbers improved my my confidence improved but it was a process to get there and it was there was some dark days in the facility and so I don't know if this team is quite equipped for that the way we were in 2009 and that's no knock on the player on Jackson Dart it's just I don't know if that that team's ready for all that I think another year, a couple reps, watching a pro like Russell Wilson do it for an entire year.
30:44If you can do that and withstand that and the coach has a long enough leash, then I think that's the best situation for a young quarterback.
30:52Rich Eisen:Mark Sanchez here on the Rich Eisen Show. I've got the author Seth Wickersham coming in studio next hour. in this book on quarterbacks, revealed that Caleb Williams last year did not get any heads up or too much guidance from the coaching staff on how to watch film or what film to watch. And I thought to myself, and there's Tyson Bajant in the room as well, who we all know hasn't got a lot of time in the league. And I'll be honest with you, Mark, I thought of the hard knocks moment involving you back in the day with the Jets, if I'm not mistaken, was it Brunel who basically told you you need a binder?
31:33Rich Eisen:You know what I mean? Like you got to write notes, right? Kevin O 'Connell. We brought in Rich Gannon, my rookie year, just to go through your process through the week. What do you do on Monday? What do you do on Tuesday? How do you work out? How do you eat? How do you take notes? We would watch tape. He would throw it up on the screen and say, what are you looking at? And I'm like, the defense? He said, what about it? well what about it um right well he goes well what's the front it's an over okay so are you making a grouping of over fronts that you're gonna see because i would if i were you because what else are you gonna get i said well i don't know he goes well if you see over you're probably gonna see an under you might see a bear you might see a jam you might see and i was just like whoa okay yeah let's go boom and we started categorizing fronts and then he said when you walk up to the line of scrimmage what are you looking at so well you got to see the front first wear the backers out peek the corners and then i got to keep my eyes on the safety she's like great three by one the backside safety is going to tell you the story you better watch him all the time one eye on him almost all the time and then the premier players you got to keep another eye on him you better have eight eyes you know and so he was reminding me of what this position really demands him brunel o 'connell and i was blown away just going to practice last year watching the hard knock stuff that they didn't have a veteran.
32:52There were guys out there. Go get one of these guys that you know is not going to play that's basically a coaching cleats. You know, somebody like a Josh McCown, right? Obviously, he's coaching now, but somebody like that towards the end of their career where if you get in a jam and he's got to play two games, hopefully he can win one of them. But we're not expecting this guy to start 10 games for us. He's here to help the rookie. Right.
33:14Rich Eisen:And McCown's in Minnesota right now on KOC staff. and kind of, I guess, this subject matter, I brought it up to drive to the question of now Ben Johnson's there. Well, I think that's why it's been such a rude awakening. That's what I'm saying. So what you just mentioned, again, we don't know the exact details of whatever conversations Caleb was having with the staff that was, as we all know, turned over midseason. But is this the stuff that's being sent in Caleb's direction and he's processing for the first time in a training camp and we're going to see against Minnesota? Like, is that what's happening?
33:55Rich Eisen:And if so, how do you think it's going to work? Well, I think without obviously being there every day, my guess and my sense from talking to other people who are familiar with Ben Johnson, he's an intense guy. He's all about protocols and systems that he's created that we're going to trust this system and this protocol and you go through your checklist. and if it doesn't work get down throw the ball away get us out of trouble you're gonna have to do that maybe a handful of times in the game but another two handfuls of times in a game i'm gonna put you in a really good spot and you're just going to deliver the ball exactly where i tell you like that's kind of the vibe you get from talking to jared goff about his former coordinator but the the the level of efficacy is high he wants a very high standard and to the point where early in training camp i remember that article comes out that caleb got kicked off the field with the first team offense i'd bet uh just about anything that what happened was they had some shifts and motions and whatever and guys just weren't lining up right and it didn't work out right and he just hey get the hell out of here if you can't do the pre-snap stuff you can't run plays for me move next group you know what i mean and it's not because he doesn't think he's going to be the starter right it's more of just making a point it's almost like it's almost like raising your kids you know like hey is this the way you're gonna act all right then i got some chores for you to do around the house by the way you know what i mean hey that long looks a little long once you don't mow it why don't you go pick up the dog poop in the backyard and why don't you clean the pool and they're just like whoa what happened it's like well then don't act like a jerk or do what you're supposed to do and so i think in those situations those were that's different than what caleb has experienced in college and last year in the nfl so it was eye-opening for him and a little shocking but he's one of those guys who's so smart he's so sharp he can read the room he's just gonna rise with that tide you do think so you do think so you do i do i really think ben's gonna push him in the right way to get him to perform and that's part of it as a coach you're part psychologist not just a teacher you got to understand how to connect with these guys and bridge the gap with these guys how was he raised how do his parents talk to him how can i get him to get a little angry without getting reckless you know how do i how do i push his buttons a little bit how do i get this guy to get juiced up and get the rest of the players around him excited do i have to love up tyson bajin so he gets a little jealous and then oh shoot now now i gotta perform you know whatever it takes you gotta get it out of him and so i think ben johnson was toying with that and a lot of a lot of this training camp the first time you get a quarterback that you're excited about that you think has a ton of potential you throw everything at him.
36:38Throw everything at him, and then as the season starts, you can kind of spoon feed him what works, and then we keep working towards the growth of this position and this player.
36:47Rich Eisen:Fascinating. What do you think about golf without Ben Johnson? Because to me, the national conversation involving the Lions, Mark, is through the prism of what happened to the Eagles after they made the Super Bowl, lost. Lost both coordinators, took a step back. Dan Campbell doesn't have Ben Johnson for his offense. Aaron Glenn, as you all know. is with the Jets right now. And everyone's kind of forgetting that this roster is insanely talented and also, at present, doesn't have a million people on injured reserve like they suffered last year and were still the one seed. What do you think about Goff minus Ben Johnson?
37:24Rich Eisen:Is that a narrative that is fair or not here? I think they're getting – it's fair to question because they've had so much success. And then when one person, when one member of that party leaves, it's like, OK, well, who are they now? We'll find out in week one through 17. But with Johnny Morton coming in, he was actually our receivers coach at USC in 2008. And he's been in the league forever. Great offensive mind. And this dude is intense. He is, I mean, if you could pick somebody to replace Ben Johnson and match the intensity level, the way he's able to get the most out of his players while still in front of other players, just undressing these dudes verbally.
38:12I mean, he's a tough sucker now. He don't pull any punches. And he's going to tell you exactly where you need to be, former wide receiver. So one of his main pet peeves is you just got to be where the quarterback expects you. when he expects you there that's it like nobody likes an uber who's late nobody likes anything late just get there when you're supposed to be there dude the app said five minutes i'm expecting five minutes not that hard you know what i mean and so i think with the type of players they have the the tight-knit kind of camaraderie that this team it's a familial kind of team you know this team is bigger than just football it transcends the sport they got the whole city on their back they're feeling everything there you know Detroit versus the world so I think they have some things in place that will help a new coordinator like Johnny Morton he's called plays before the the real uh question is on the other side of the ball on on defense right Kelvin Shepard uh former linebacker LSU uh first time coordinator on defense is replacing Aaron Glenn who's now obviously the head coach with the Jets Aaron Glenn intense guy that I mean their whole crew is about that intense family dynamic in Detroit.
39:26So can these guys replace what they had and either match that success or surpass that success? And those are fair question marks to have. But I do think with the people they've put in those situations and the personnel that they've retained, they got a shot to be just as good. I'm just worried about the division. Sure. The division is going to cannibalize itself. You got really good teams across the board, and then the Bears are like this wild card. If they turn it on, I mean, all these teams are going to have winning records, and two of them aren't going to make the playoffs maybe. So, I don't know.
39:59That's going to be a tough one to call in the North.
40:01Rich Eisen:In the couple minutes I have left with you, Mark Sanchez, what do you think about the Jets' season? You know, Justin Fields getting his shot, Aaron Glenn, his long-awaited shot. They made some smart moves. I mean, Fields is a kid with upside. He's only$20 million, two-year deal. And they also signed their Rookies of the Year from two years ago, a couple years ago, long term. So they're not going to be wondering if they're there. They made some plays. How do you think it all works out? Yeah. What do you think? It's an interesting question. Are you sure we have time for this one? Aha. Wait a minute.
40:35Rich Eisen:Hold on a second. I'm getting it. You're getting it. What, your five-year-old twins are calling for dad? Yes, there we go. That's it. Wait a minute. They're done going the lawn, Mark. No, so this is a tough one because I think, you know, you get Justin Fields and, you know, calling their preseason game earlier this season. I called preseason game two against the Giants, and that was just a tough outing. I got to watch both of their joint practices. I thought the Jets looked much better in the practices than they did in the game, which, you know, take that for what you want. It's not always going to be perfect in games, but you'd like to see something.
41:16This team has got to be the way they're the way they're built and their personnel. They've shored up the offensive line. They've gone with some young talent on the outside, both tackles. Right. And they got to run the football. I mean, Braylon Allen and Brees Hall have to be absolutely worn out. And if they really want to be good and win some games, They're going to have to win with some tough defense, which Aaron Glenn is going to inject into this team. He's inheriting a solid group so long as, you know, Johnston's healthy, coming back from some injuries. And then Quinton Williams obviously missed a lot of the preseason.
41:54Is he going to be all right? You get those two guys together with some of their other veteran talent. I think they got a legit defense. I like I like where they're out on defense. But Justin Fields is going to have to be a part of the run game. and there's going to be, there's this need for a wide receiver too. Who's going to step up besides Garrett Wilson? Because he got doubled in that preseason game a couple times. They forced the ball to him. You know, balls on the ground, getting tipped away. You know, you've got to have somebody that, the defense has the scheme and game plan for somebody other than Garrett Wilson.
42:27Is that going to be Mason Taylor, the rookie tight end? Is that going to be one of these other receivers by committee? Like, who's that going to be? Arian Smith from Georgia. You know, we've got to solve the drops. There's still a lot to be desired in the passing game, unfortunately, but I think they're going to make a little bit of a run. They're going to scare some teams because they're tough, because they play the type of defense that Aaron Glenn wants. They're going to erase some poor offensive drives with turnovers by the defense. That's what he preaches. You might move the ball between the 20s, but I'm taking that ball away at some point, and we're going the other way with it.
43:01But if they want to be good, they better run the heck out of the ball. we're talking 30 plus rushes a game and um you know and they got to play some great defense and steal so they got to be better on special teams too rich i'm sorry bury the headline they lost about three games on special teams last year it was horrible that was tough and i mean those three games changed the course of their season just with a field goal kick here or there and so i think nick folk can help sure that up um but special teams have to be a weapon defense has to take the ball away and the offense got to run the heck out of it.
43:32Rich Eisen:Mark, have a great season with week one and I believe you're international. You call it an international game? We're calling a Berlin game. A Berlin game. Fantastic. I mean, what a city. They love their football there, man. Have a great season, but let's talk before then, obviously. Congrats on those two twin girl five-year-olds. Best of luck. Five-month-old. Five-month-old. Pardon me. Definitely get them to work. You're very good. Mark, thanks again, man, on this and we'll chat down the line. Absolutely. Sounds great. Thanks, guys. Awesome. Fun stuff. Smart stuff from Mark Sanchez right there.
44:16Rich Eisen:Rich Eisen here with some advice. If high interest credit card debt is grinding you down, it might be time to call an audible with a SoFi personal loan. It consolidates your debt into

I always like to think that I'm his most favorite person in the room. But when the Vince Lombardi trophy is sitting between the two of us. I think I lose out to Michael Irvin, right? I think I lose out to this baby, right? And Rick, it's so funny you start with this because I'm going to tell you something, man.
45:35Rich Eisen:Yes. When I was playing, I made a pact that I would never go to a Super Bowl until I play in the Super Bowl. Okay. Every guest that comes here, they're going to get Super Bowl questions. That's why I always say I would never go to a Super Bowl until after I play in a Super Bowl so I would not have people like Rich Eisen asking me questions that I cannot answer. Now, what do you want to ask, Rich? Because I've been prepared to answer since I won three of these things. So what was it like picking this trophy up for the first time? It was the greatest thing. And it really was, Rich. It really was the greatest thing.
46:09Rich Eisen:Do you remember the circumstances? Oh, my God, man. First of all, you got to go back and think about, like, we were 1-15. We were 3-13, 1-15. When you're 3-13 and 1-15 Cleveland Browns, I know you don't think there's any chance that you would ever lay a hold of something like this. So to go from those days to coming in 92 and winning that Super Bowl and actually somebody handing you that trophy, the most incredible thing, most incredible feeling in the world. Did you ever step in when you heard that Jimmy and Jerry were not doing well or your station wasn't that in life at that point in time? I just didn't think anything would happen, Rich.
46:48Rich Eisen:I really didn't. I was like, are you joking? You know how hard it is doing Super Bowls, and you have a formula that's working. And then when it happened, it's like, oh, my God. Like, you know, I should have done this. Maybe I should have talked to him. I should have tried this. I should have tried that. Jerry Jones, I'm telling you, that's the one thing. I'll never forget Jerry Jones telling me that when I was negotiating with him. And I was saying, you know, I'll go to Cincinnati. And I was just talking, trying to get my monies up. I said, I'll go to Cincinnati. You can get car pickings over here, and let's see what happens.
47:18Rich Eisen:And Jerry said to me, Jerry said, Michael, you know, when I see you, I see Michael Irvin and the Dallas Cowboys. He said, I kind of see it like Magic Johnson and the Lakers. He said, what is magic without the Lakers? And what are the Lakers without the magic? He said, you guys, they belong together, just like you and the Cowboys. He said, Michael, the best way I can tell you, if a bomb hit Valley Ranch today, that's what we practiced, and blew everything up, everybody, everything. When the smoke clears, baby, me and you, we going to still be here. So we might as well work this deal out right now.
47:50Rich Eisen:that's what he said to you? I promise y 'all, this dude is a fool this dude is a fool he had me laughing as he was telling me no about my money
48:04Rich Eisen:that's why you're in the Hall of Fame together Michael Irvin's latest appearance 10 minutes away right here on the Rich Eisen Show and lots to talk about with him with that Netflix documentary on his era of the Cowboys and then of course he had Jerry Jones on his show last week and that made headlines, and I need to nominate Michael for the guy to break the long jam going on with the Dallas Cowboys. And you second that emotion, do you not? Absolutely. Somebody's got to do it. That's coming up. That's coming up. Great stuff from Mark Sanchez. Excellent insight on what's going on potentially with Caleb Williams and Ben Johnson and how the Lions should be just as fine.
48:43Rich Eisen:Moving on with Johnny Morton, it appears. and then seems like there'll be some bumpy road for the Jets with some exception of putting some scaring some people. We'll see what Mark's talking about obviously coming up. Let's go to where are we going right now? Ben in Austin, Texas. What's up Ben in Austin, Texas? Hey fellas, what's good? We're good. Hey, well football that counts So rise today. So I just wanted to give the locals perspective on the Longhorns and contrast that with what I'm hearing from my father-in-law, who is a diehard OSU graduate. Okay. Cool. So two key points of victory folks in Austin here keep calling out.
49:31Arch over San, Texas D over Ohio State's defense. So I wanted to break that down a bit because I think there's some salient points here. Though Arch has a slight edge in experience and physicality, I wouldn't let that height blind you to the fact that this is his biggest game to date as a starter. Sure. It comes on the road, in the shoe, and I think that that's going to lead to some mistakes. Now, with Sand, his throwing motion and release point are very similar to a former one-horn QB, Quinn Ewers, and Sand's height has not been measured as far as I can tell. So even if he's six foot flat, that gives me some tip ball concerns.
50:07now on defense not a ton of starters carrying over on either team but Texas has slightly more and did more to fill holes with high impact players in my opinion plus of the two coordinators that OSU is replacing the defensive side would concern me a bit more
50:22Rich Eisen:look at you Ben you're locked in you just locked us in right there Ben who wins now you just got to give me who wins in the 30 seconds I have 30 seconds. Who wins? I got two predictions for you guys. Arch is going to have two TDs in the air and one on the ground. That's for you, TJ. I love that. And then I see each team with two turnovers, but Texas makes the most of those opportunities with one coming late. So I got Texas 24, Ohio State 17. Ben and Austin, everybody. Ben, you might have to call in every week to give us this information. Ohio State, one and a half point favorites. Wow. I would take that final score.
51:02Rich Eisen:with a 47.5 point total. So Ben's going under. Ben's going under. And Texas wins the game outright. Dogs in the under. Dogs in the under. Michael Irvin joining us next. And Seth Wickersham in studio, hour two, with Adam Ray behind. Still right here on the Roku channel. Hey. Hey. I would take that result. I would take that result. Helps my narrative. Anything that helps. Three tutties. Arch Heisman. Okay. Texas number one, keep on moving, man, toward the natty. I think my narrative is me living my life on the seven seas. You know that? I would text the valley. I imagine. Let's be honest now. Straight up.
51:49Rich Eisen:Straight up. Straight up. Yeah. What type of boat do you think these cars will lead to? Yes. When you say seven seas, you're talking about oceans. Yeah, oceans. I thought you were talking about marinas. This is Arch Manning, Rich. He ain't local. What size vessel do you believe these cards will yield? I'm going to be very honest with you. I'm going to have to talk to my boat consulting, one J. Michael Del Tufo, and he will help me. J. Michael Del Tufo. I can tell you, how much will the cards be worth? What's the most expensive rookie card sold for? Great question. Five figures, Mikey. Five figures.
52:27Give me five figures. Yeah, so it's Arch. So five figures. TJ can buy a lot of boats in my harbor for five. I got five cards too, Mike. Not just one. Oh, you got five? I got five of them. Hold on a second. So he's going to be next to a basketball player. It's not just this one. This is one I showed you. We got a 30-footer, Mikey?
52:41Rich Eisen:No, while we're doing this silliness. Silly? Yeah, okay. You're not invited. You can't get a 30-footer for five figures. No, five cards. Five cards. Five cards. He's got five cards. But wait a minute. Let's just say that Arch does what Chris says will happen. Yeah, I've already put him in the Hall of Fame. But you wouldn't cash your card in then. You would then wait to see what the NFL career looks like. Yeah, I mean, like I said two years ago, I already predicted Hall of Fame and gold jacket and titles. So don't talk five figures. We're now talking eight. Six. Well, the hype is higher for the cards heading into the rookie year.
53:18Rich Eisen:Of NFL. Oh, you want to cash out the hype. But what if he turns into Uncle Peyton? Well, that's why I'll keep two on deck. And now you've got rookie cards. You can hold a couple, but you want to cash in on that hype. You're not riding the Seven Seas. You're at a marina. He's eating at the Seven Seas restaurant, maybe. Why are you trying to handcuff me, Rich? Just be happy for me. It's not like we're all going to summer in Santorini like you're Bezos. How do you know? Arch Manning is going to be the GOAT, I'm telling you. The curse of all time. According to Google Gemini, a 30-foot boat can cost anywhere from$50 to over$500.
53:53Rich Eisen:That's what I mean. He's good with five cards. You're in. Arch is going to have to win five Super Bowls. So you're envisioning what Ben and Austin just said, that happens. And then the Saints lose opener to the Cardinals in their filthy, dirty rivalry uniforms. Oh, come on. And then you're in like Flynn. Look at her coming up next. Rock the boat.
54:18You know when you're locked in, focused, and fearless. Welcome to the WNBA. Your vision narrows. You can't look away. Every assist, every stop, every logo three. From beyond the logo! Every did you see that moment? You bet! What records are going to be broken this season?
54:40Rich Eisen:All of it right here. Lock in. It's the WNBA on ESPN. All season long.
