In short
The Rich Eisen Show hour focuses on NFL training-camp/season outlook—especially the New York Jets’ quarterback Justin Fields’ toe injury and Aaron Glenn’s “stakes in every snap” practice intensity—followed by a tribute segment mourning Cubs legend Ryne Sandberg with Jeff Garlin.
Guests
Jeff Garlin, a diehard Chicago Cubs fan and long-time admirer of Sandberg; he describes watching every Cubs game (WGN era) and personal interactions with Sandberg.
Key claims
Fields’ toe was dislocated, not season-ending, and he expects to play week one with a protective plastic cover. Glenn emphasizes competitiveness where losing drills “sucks” and winning drills matter. The show debates win totals for multiple Week 1 matchups, including Jets-Steelers and other combined-season over/unders.
Notable examples
Garlin recalls Sandberg’s early 0-for-30 slump, then his all-around excellence (bunting, hustle, humor, no ego), plus a Cubs World Series-era connection and an ice-skating joke Sandberg once made.

This is the Rich Eisen Show. It's out! No, the boy comes out! Live from the Rich Eisen Show studio in Los Angeles. I think Caleb's got a ways to go. Williams wants to throw it out of this set. That ball's going to be picked up. They're just trying to overload him with everything.
1:15Rich Eisen:To try to speed up his process. And the plan is from here then to start to narrow that down. Earlier on the show, host of Pro Football Talk, Mike Florio. Coming up, four-time NBA champion, John Sally. Plus, your phone calls, latest news, and more. And now, it's Rich Eisen. That's right. Hour number two of the Rich Eisen show is on the air. Daniel Jeremiah is making his way to the Chargers facility, but not in time to appear on this show today. I said, what about the next time you're here? And he said, he's not coming back to the Chargers facility until tomorrow. So he will be on tomorrow's Rich Eisen show.
1:55Rich Eisen:Look how we roll here on the program. it's it's it's so well planned our booking sometimes uh or it's at the vagaries of uh the la uh or the southern california area traffic patterns right up uh at 844-204 which is the number to tell entire hour is free for us to to hang out here uh together uh mike del tufo suzy and i finished last night the uh billy joel documentary on hbo which is available right HBO Max, pardon me, available right here on Roku. I cannot stress enough how amazing it is. And for any fan of Billy Joel, which means most everybody who's breathing on planet Earth, you have to see it.
2:39Rich Eisen:Guy's so flawed, and some of the backstories of his music making and his personal life all being melded together. it's beautiful it's you know uh disconcerting sometimes and one of the greatest documentaries i've ever seen i can't stress enough you would love it yeah i have to i will 100 i'm gonna watch you gotta see i'm a zone i have to be in the zone and i have to watch the whole thing that's five hours oh no i'll watch the whole thing and i i will that's what i'll do i have to watch the whole thing it's five hours i can't wait you you i just gotta have the time to do it just gotta have five hours together in order to bang it out.
3:22Rich Eisen:So enjoy it. Enjoy it. And I can't wait to hear what you think about it. Speaking of, I swear I didn't plan this. Speaking of New York State of mine. It was, what was it? What was it, guys? Where I woke up, heard Justin Fields gets carted off. When was that? When was that? Was it just last week? Was it one week ago today? Tuesday? Could it have been? Was it one week ago today? I forget when it was. Thursday. It was late last week. All these days just mold together here, right? So, yeah. You've got the New York Jets watching their quarterback limp off into a cart, get carted off, and needing an MRI on a toe.
4:15Rich Eisen:and I'll be honest I thought it was the end of the season Aaron Glenn was kind of like hey everybody just take a breath and he said that after we found out it was much ado about something but not something so great that he's out for the rest of the preseason let alone week one and let alone the entire season And my response was, Aaron, you know, you haven't been around a while, you know. Been away a long time. You know, all of us Jets fans, we crawl into our shine boxes when quarterbacks get hurt. And all the hopes are in that quarterback's basket. And long story short, guess who spoke today about his toe?
5:07Rich Eisen:Oh. Justin Fields. Hit it. I mean, yeah, at first it just felt, we got our feet stepped on all the time at practice, so it just felt normal at first when I first got stepped on, but I tried walking off and it felt weird, like something was almost stuck in my toe. So I didn't really know what to think, I just knew something was wrong. So I just went up on the sidelines, got carded and got the MRI and x-ray, and luckily they said it was just dislocated it. So God was definitely looking out that day, but I'm glad to be back on the field of working. Are you wearing any special green to get protected though?
5:44Yeah, I just got like this little plastic cover
5:46Rich Eisen:my man's up came with it so almost like a little steel toe but it's a plastic toe but yeah we kind of came up with that idea and just to try to protect it for these next couple of weeks If only Aaron Rodgers could have used a plastic cover Plastic boot Just a plastic Here coach You know what I mean? Like he goes and gets sacked And then he doesn't get up. No. And then he hobbles off the field and he hobbles into the locker room and he's done for the year. And his entire two-year tenure with the Jets goes right down the tubes in four snaps. Yeah. I wish there was a plastic covering for that. I wish there was a plastic covering for the wounds.
6:32Rich Eisen:But there's a new Aaron in town and Fields is good and it looks like we will see him for week one. If it's all it is, just a little, let's put a little plastic on it. You can get out there. Get out there with the plastic on it. And now it's about the Aaron that's there. And it's about the Aaron that's there selling what he's trying to sell and everybody trying to buy it. And the questions about how different it is. Listen, it's going to be different because last year they had a coach for five weeks and then an interim coach the rest of the time. and a 40-year-old quarterback who was the one guy that everybody was following in terms of tone setting and everything else.
7:12Rich Eisen:Now there's a 26-year-old with a plastic covering on his foot, and the Aaron who's laying down how things are to be done is Glenn, the HC, and Garrett Wilson with quite an interesting comment from the podium today about how things are different in this Jets camp. Yeah, just the competitiveness. Not just talking about being competitive. Like, no, no, no, you got to train that way. It's got to feel like that at practice. It's got to feel like if you lose, it sucks at practice. It can't just be, oh, you know, we'll turn it on when the game comes, right? And I think that's the main thing that I see that's different, just the way we're practicing, the intensity, the stakes.
7:58Rich Eisen:It feels like there's stakes, you know, depending on which period it is, the stakes feel higher based on whether it's a competition red zone or a two-minute. It feels like you won the drill when you won the drill, right? And it feels like you lost when you lost. And to me, that's how I like it. You know, it's practice, yes, but there's also ability to, an opportunity to practice winning and get that feeling and what it takes to just do it right on a consistent basis. And I think it starts out here. When I heard that, this is what I thought. last year's Aaron and the year before that during training camp and for the first four snaps of the season do you think that Aaron was trying to communicate to the teammates that there are stakes in every single snap of practice don't you think that Aaron communicated that I do listen I know the way you feel about the chewing bark Aaron Rodgers no that Rodgers absolutely was in my estimation telling everybody every snap counts guys this gets us better I would think that a veteran quarterback of Rodgers' stature would say that the whole point of it like you don't think so you're making a face over there I just the guy who said we need to focus on everything outside of football and all the outside stuff needs to go away but who couldn't stop doing all of the outside stuff and saying about right i just find it hard to believe that that guy was like locked in 24 7 i just find it interesting that it and because let's just then for assume from my thought process here a quarterback named Aaron is saying every snap counts we got to play like it your hair's on fire even in practice we saw what happened and Aaron says it now he's the HC and there's a sense of urgency maybe because the HC can cut you yeah I like the vibe as opposed to hey if the quarterback doesn't like you maybe the HC is going to cut you you know what I mean like it's kind of different when it comes from the head coach.
10:15Rich Eisen:And you know how I feel about Salah. And Salah would be all gas, no brakes. You remember he was the guy who was looking at receipts, keeping what, CVS long Salah receipts. He said all the right things. Salah was a good front man. He did. But it just didn't work out. It didn't work out. If you ain't got no haters, you ain't popular. I like that. So, and he's a great coach. Oh, yeah. I bet you, we're having Brock Purdy on later this week. He's scheduled up here. Obviously, he's on the offensive side of the football. But any defensive player, for sure, or he will speak to it, they will say Salah's return as the defensive coordinator there will make a massive difference in San Francisco.
11:04Rich Eisen:Yeah, I buy that. Which I also believe satisfies the thought process of many Niners fans who've been thinking that since he left to go be the HC of the Jets. But my point is just like it helps when the HC is the one delivering the message about urgency. And then the other errands coming back week one to start the season because, you know, the NFL schedule makers were like, we think Rodgers is going to play for the Steelers, and we're going to give that on a plate to the National Football League audience week one. And Will McDonald, who's definitely in the mix of best pass rusher on the New York Jets, had this to say about facing Rodgers week one.
11:48Yeah, you know, I always wanted to sack Rodgers from a little kid. Actually, let me not say that, because a little kid, I wasn't even interested in playing football. But I did watch him, though. I watched him a lot. But, you know, once I – you know, like I said, when I first came here, obviously I wasn't, you know, able to do that on the team. But now, you know, I think he's going to be very competitive. I'm sure he already knows, you know, what I'm about. So I'm sure he's going to have his head on his shoulders, you know. Obviously he's the best. So he got a couple tricks off his sleeve.
12:22Rich Eisen:That's fine. Great week one game. Week one Sunday marquee, I think. Oh, yeah. Certainly in the early window. Maybe the entire, you know, the entire day up until the point the Lions and Packers kick off in Lambeau Field. There's a lot of good games. 425 local time. That's a great early window game. Oh, yeah. I think Panthers and Jags is kind of sneaky. No, I'm not talking sneaky. I'm talking marquee, pal. Marquee. Like, settle in. I got to see this. Yeah. With all due respect to every other. There's a lot of good games. I'm not saying there aren't. Yeah. I mean, you could make a great case for Cam Ward versus Bo Nix, as we did at the end of our one.
13:07Rich Eisen:Bucks Falcons. Oh, yeah. Sure. Whatever quarterbacks in Cleveland. They're all higher register ones compared to, oh, Rogers coming back to MetLife. Yeah, I'm with you. Now, you said something the other day. Was it on air or off air? I can't even tell you why. I think the show had just kind of ended, I think. we were you're like steelers jets and you gave us a total combined win number yeah of you gave us a total combined win number of 18 it was high to start yeah right yeah like and steelers jets at the end of the day 18 and then you then lowered it after tj and i are like wait a minute well i was looking at i'm looking at vegas too what is it so vegas has the jets win total at five and a half.
13:55Rich Eisen:And the Steelers at eight and a half. That's right. So that's 14. That's 14 combined for both of them. I would take the combined over there. Five and a half. Listen, say what you will about the Jets, man. But five and a half. That cupboard is not bare. That cupboard is definitely not bare. No, all that hinges on fields and how you think he's going to perform, his health. Glenn in his first run at it. Rookie coach. Tough schedule. So that's kind of with that. But 8.5 means... 8.5 for the Steelers. I know that means that somebody out there in a town where Mo Green doesn't have a plaque or a signpost, which, by the way, what an outrage.
14:39Rich Eisen:It's a disgrace. It's a disgrace. Yeah, I'm with you. But that's the other thing. Put the Steelers schedule up. We've gone through this. It is very difficult. This means, though, this means, though, that there's some people who think Tomlin's going to have his first losing record as a head coach. Yeah, you're getting plus money if you go over. Come on. I'll take that bet. Plus 105. Which is what? Plus 105. They're not finishing under 500. I agree with you. Mike Tomlin's allergic to finishing under 500. Might not go to the Super Bowl, might not win the Super Bowl, but they make the playoffs. They make the playoffs.
15:12Rich Eisen:Let's just do a schedule and find me nine wins. They have a better – this is the best quarterback they've had in three years. You want me to find you nine wins? Find nine wins. I can see them going 3-0 to start. Wow. So that's a third. Why not? Okay. Cleveland. Cleveland's another at home. That's four. Four. Okay. Home for Indianapolis could be five. The Chargers. At the Chargers? It's a tall order. Do you know what the table towels are going to be? I know it'll be loud in there. It's going to be insane. All right, sure. I'll give you that. Oh, man. No, no. That's feasible. You say, where are they?
15:50Rich Eisen:That's six. They're going to split with the Ravens. How about this one? Out of the games that Rogers will not lose, right? Like if you want to put it in the category as if he could wave a wand and just say, I'm going to do this my own self, right? At Chicago. You betcha. You bet. Wait a minute. Why would that be bigger than the Green Bay? Well, because he's the one that famously put the belt on there, man, and said he owned the team. Yeah, but he's playing the Packers. Excuse me. That's number one of them all, please. Right? Right? But the Packers are pretty darn good. We need to see what the Bears look like.
16:34Rich Eisen:That could be a tough order. But you know he's going to go into that game all week long. It's going to be this, that, the other thing about what he used to say there. He'll have his fun with it. But then he'll show up, and he will want to complete that circle. He's going through the NFC North for the last time here. And I understand his body might not be able to cash whatever his heart is trying to write as a check. True. And his soul. Okay. Home for Miami is absolutely a Monday night in the middle of December where it could be 20 degrees. That's one. Oh, yeah. You're not wrong. It's a very tough schedule.
17:13Rich Eisen:One of the Cincinnati games they could get. They could get one of the Cincinnati games easily. The game has to come. Don't forget the defense is pretty damn good, too. Yeah, well, they have one receiver, questionable running back, a shaky offensive line. What was the Chris Brockman win total? Forget Vegas. You said 16, right? Yeah, I think that 8-9 is good for the Steelers, and I think the Jets maybe at 7. I would put it maybe like 15-and-a-half. TJ, you take the over-under and 15-and-a-half wins for the Steelers and the Jets. I'll take the over. Nine. I would take the over. I'll take the over on that.
17:48Rich Eisen:I think the Jets win at least. You think 7-10 for the Jets? Is that what you're feeling there? I think the Jets win 7. I don't want to put a win total on it other than the fact that they're better than 5-12, dude. I don't know that. Barring injury. Okay. I don't know that. They have enough talented guys out there. Well, they had the talent the last two years also. Understood. Things were just not. It's a new world there. I like the vibe and in terms of you should like the vibes and on top of it you're putting in a new world they pay guys perfect example a perfect example of this being a new world is Justin Fields didn't suffer a season ending injury and could just cover it up with plastic right like a tarp you know that's new that's new fangled right there oh the Jets caught a break from the football injury gods oh huh we call that a wrinkle that's an oh henry like twist to the end of a football story please i talked to my jet friends
19:00Rich Eisen:please all right you know we're going to take a break here's what we're going to do we're going to come up with let's do five more of these from week one week one schedule week one matchups Now, are you going to put together what Vegas says or what Brockman says? We can do Vegas, and we'll use that as the launch point, and then I'll come up with a number, and you guys will go over under. TJ? I'm with it. Let's do it. And you at 844-204-RICH-NUMBER-DOLL, you want to chime in on any of this stuff? Please feel free. The hour is ours. It's like Andy Reid. The time's yours.

22:03Rich Eisen:Jordan stories, right? We need Jordan stories. Cowboy stories. Rodman stories. Rodman stories. Chuck Daly stories. What else do we need? Phil Jackson stories. I mean, he's won championships with all the, except for the Celtics. He's won championships with all the real, like, you know. Who was he in college with? He went to Georgia Tech, so that would have been Mark Price. He predated Starbury, obviously. A Randolph Childress situation? Was he teammates with Mark Price? I'm thinking maybe, let me double check. He went to Georgia Tech. Right? Bobby Crimmins had that white, that sort of Steve Martin hair color, right?
22:46Rich Eisen:For somebody younger than that hair color, right? Right. Remember that? Right, right, right. That bowl cut he had? It went great a little early. Let's see who was on this team. Who was on his college team? Yeah, Mark Price. Mark Price. A bunch of guys are playing the league. How far do you go in the tournament? Not to use our Roku channel TV only conversation as a show prep, but why not? I mean, why not? You know, this is how the sausage gets made. This is how the sausage gets made. He lost in the Sweet 16 in 86 to LSU. That was predate Shaq, but was it?
23:27Rich Eisen:Was that the artist later known as Mahmoud Azarov? He was 80. I would say he was 87. It was not. It was against Dale Brown's LSU Tigers, that's for sure. So in 84-85, they made it to the Elite Eight, lost to Georgetown. Right. Tom Hammonds, Dwayne Farrell played on Bruce Dalrymple. Bruce Dalrymple. I haven't heard that name in forever. That was the Georgetown team that lost to Villanova. Craig Neal. Oh, man. Good stuff coming in Hour 3. Let's go to, is it Ian in Rockford, Illinois, or is it Ian, like eagle? Yep, that's correct. Well, I said two, and then you said that's correct. Which one is it?
24:07Rich Eisen:Probably the first one. Sorry, it's Ian. It sounds like an E. Okay, Ian in Rockford, Illinois. Is it Illinois or Illinois? I'm sorry, okay. Much love to my man, Scott Ian. What's on your mind, Ian, in Rockford, Illinois? Well, even though I'm calling from Illinois, I am a faithful Packers fan. I want to do the old Packers win. Oh, there we go. Packers fan in Illinois. That's like a Michigan fan in Ohio or an Ohio fan in the state up north. All right, here we go. Yep, that's right. All right, let me get the page. Okay. School in Oshkosh. Okay. Okay. And then you went to Rockford, Illinois. Here we go.
24:52Rich Eisen:Ian, what happens when the Packers start against the Lions in Lambeau Field week one? What happens? Well, you know what? They're tired of losing at home to those guys. That's a win. All right. 1-0 home against the team that knocked them out of the playoffs, right? No, no. Pardon me. That was the Eagles. The Washington Commanders on a Thursday night. I think that's another win for us. That's 2-0 in five days. All right. at the Browns. What happens then? That's a win. Come on. 3-0. Oh, this is going to be fun. At the Dallas Cowboys. Ian in Rockford, Illinois. Sorry, TJ, but the owners are back. That's another win.
25:31Rich Eisen:The owners are back. That says Ian in Rockford, Illinois. But at least he apologized to you first before thoroughly disrespecting you. I don't like his choice of words, but the thing is, they got us. Alright, 4-0 into the bye. We're coming out. Home for the Bengals and Joe Burrow. You know, like Joe, I think this is another win. 5-0 at the Cardinals.
25:58Rich Eisen:I'm still going to go with another win here. Yeah, I bet you didn't think you would start playing the win-loss game for the Packers and have them start 6-0, but that's how you wind up playing the win-loss game. 6-0 at the Steelers. What happens when you take on Rodgers? You know, I think he's going to be disappointed. I think Jordan Love takes it home. That's another win. Could you imagine if the Packers are the last remaining undefeated team going into that game? Now we're talking. But they come out at 7-0 in Ian's World, home for the Panthers. That's a win. Oh, yeah. 8-0 against the team that did bounce you.
26:36Rich Eisen:Eagles on a Monday night in Lambeau. How huge is that going to be on the ESPN family of networks? It's going to be a big game. I think that we're too confident in this one. I think this is a loss. All right. 8-1 at the Giants. That's a win. 9-1 home for the Vikings. We'll win that one. 10-1 at the Lions to kick off the John Madden Thanksgiving celebration.
27:05Rich Eisen:I think we sweep the Lions this year. That's a win. That's 11-1 home for the Bears. The Bears. That's a win. 12-1 at the Broncos. That's a win. 13-1 at the Bears on a Saturday. That's a win. 13-1 home for the Ravens on a Saturday. This is the return of Jair Alexander. Unfortunately, I think this one's lost. 13-2 at the... Pardon me. That's... Wait a minute. Let me get this right. 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14-2 at the Vikings. I think we'll split Minnesota. That's a lot. Okay. So you finished 14-3 on a two-game losing streak. Ian in Rockford, Illinois. Thanks for the call, brother. There he goes. Over 13.5 wins is 9-1 for the Packers.
27:59Rich Eisen:Okay. Two. So we just had a win-loss game for the Packers be 14-3 in the previous segment, previously on the Rich Eisen show, meaning about 10 minutes ago. Chris Brock when you asked Jets Steelers a week one contest over under win total combined between the two 15 and a half you went under right I think under yes TJ and I we both said over okay barely over but yeah you have five more contests from week one and have compiled a win loss total for us to go over under on one from a certain town where Mo Green does not have a plaque or a signpost or anything to remember, the man who founded the town.

28:52Rich Eisen:Without him, Fredo would never have shown up and people wouldn't have had a problem getting a drink at the table. Exactly. Right? We can't tell you why people had a problem getting a drink at the table because Fredo was in Vegas. Fredo had business to handle that. Get off his back. Look that up. But if Mo Green really founded Vegas, I'm still thinking the sign would be there. All right. Let's keep him out of the room when Michael gets there. Long story short, you have five more of these from week one. Do you want to? Do you want to music? Yes. Music's better. It's better with the music. What's the people you want first, buddy?
29:26Rich Eisen:Let's start with Green Bay and Detroit. Green Bay and Detroit. We just had a win-loss game from a Packers fan in Illinois say the Packers are going to win 14 games. so the Packers and Lions play each other on CBS I think Nance told us he's going to be there for that one it's going to be JJ Watt and Ian Eagle Steelers and Jets so Nance and Romo Lions Packers what do you have as a win total over there Vegas has 10.5 for the Lions 9.5 for the Packers that's a total of 20 combined wins Combined wins. What's the Brockman total you're getting? I'm going to up that a little bit. I'm going to say 21 and a half.
30:12Rich Eisen:Oh, that's a tall order. That means someone's going to win 10 games. Someone wins 11 games. That's still not enough. So, Green Bay. And they're going to knock each other off. I'll go under. I'll go under. Lions, 15 wins last year. I understand that. They combined for what? Like 25 last year. I know what they combined for last year. and then the Vikings still won 14.
30:39Rich Eisen:They play the AFC North too, man. So I'll take the under on that front. We might see more 10-win teams this year than ever before. Just spread it out, and the battle for the seventh and final playoff spot is going to be sick. Weird tiebreakers. And somebody really good is going to go home. They combined for 26 wins. At least I've given you my mindset for the rest of this endeavor. I like that. Of this segment. Okay. So I will go under. TJ? Chris, what was that number again? I'm going to put it at 21 and a half. 21 and a half. Means in order to go over, that's two 11-win teams if you want to split it right down the middle.
31:16Rich Eisen:And we're talking Green Bay and Detroit. Green Bay and Detroit. I'm going to take the over. All right. I think they're both going to. I think even if Detroit comes down a little bit, wins 12, I still think Green Bay is in that 10-11 win range. Maybe Chicago is 8-9, 9-8. Minnesota isn't going to win 14 games this year, most likely. So I still think that evens out where Detroit and Green Bay go over. Okay. I'm the outlier there, and I don't feel good about it. I feel like right now, like half the time after I draft my fantasy team, I don't like my answers. And I redo it. But I just said what I said.
31:53Rich Eisen:That was my first blush, and I think there's going to be a lot more parity. But we'll see what happens. Christopher, certainly in the NFC. What else you got? Next up. I've got it right here. We wrote this down before. We did. AFC contest. This will be fun. Pete Carroll's Las Vegas Raiders. Open up week one at your new Patriots. Yeah, I love this one because two teams with a lot of question marks. You don't know what these teams are going to be. They both could overachieve. Well, they both could be maybe right around where they've been the last couple of seasons. Vegas has the win total for Vegas at 7.5 wins.
32:33Rich Eisen:7.5. For the New England Patriots, the exact same. 7.5 wins. So wait a minute. So I understand. Las Vegas has the Patriots at 7.5 wins and the Jets at 5.5. Yeah. Okay. Wow. Can this make sense? Help me out here. Make sense. So you're saying the total win total between both is 15? Is that the Brockman total? No, no, no. Brockman total is definitely higher. I'm going to put this at 17.5. I'll take the under. For Raiders and Patriots. I'll take the under. 17.5. You really think the Jets are better than the Patriots? I do. You don't? Definitely not. Okay. I don't know what the Jets did to get a lot better this offseason.
33:20Rich Eisen:They didn't have to do much to get better this offseason, Chris. yeah sure why not you're the guy sitting here you know watching stefan diggs chase a puppy around the lawn did you see that video of him i did it was great okay by the way he looked like uh rocky chasing the rooster yeah i've also been watching practice video where he looks amazing kudos to the patriots uh on getting every one of i believe the 41 dogs at their dog rescue at their adopted yes they got them all adopted right yeah they're at their training camp Well done, Patriots. That's already a win. I'll take the under. What do you take, TJ?
34:01Rich Eisen:My number is 16, so I forget what you said. 17 and a half. I'm picking 16 on that one. Sounds like a good one. Yeah, that's two 8-9 teams? That would be very... I was thinking 9 and 7. Okay, 9 and 7, that's 18 together, if you gave them both going 9 and 7. No, like 9 wins and 7 wins. Okay, very good. I feel like the Raiders get nine wins. The Pats get seven on the season. Interesting. Who do you take? I'm going to write all this down. I'm going over. The Pats are going to win 10 games. You guys are crazy. I just don't understand why you're not seeing this. Because I don't pay enough attention to the Pats.
34:38Rich Eisen:All you're doing is you put on your hope chest every damn night that Terry McLaurin is going to somehow, someway wind up on your team because you know you need weapons. Take your heart pills and buckle up. Come on, man. I think the Wingo's going to surprise a lot of people. And for your sake and for the sake of Susie's side of the family, the entirety of the man Cooper. I was thinking Ashton Jutty's probably going to win Offensive Rookie of the Year. Geno Smith can be a top half of the league quarterback and Pete Carroll's a Hall of Fame coach. Right. I'm with you. Rock Bowers is already one of the top three tight ends in the NFL.
35:12Rich Eisen:I don't disagree with anything you just said about the Raiders. There's another team in this equation. I'm shocked that you think the Jets are going to be better than New England this year. Why would he not think that? Because he's seen his team play for 50 years. Roster versus roster. Roster versus roster. Roster versus roster right now. And we'll see what happens when Tom meets Bob. Coaching staff. I understand. Quarterback. I got it. Okay. That's so disrespectful. Defensive. Okay. Okay. Justin Fields has three times as many starts in the NFL as your guy does. And he is three times not as good.
35:47Rich Eisen:He's also in his third team. Next up on the list here. Next up on the list. Let's go back to the NFC. It's not a rivalry. We always beat them. That's true. Next up on the list here. Next up on the list here. Next up on the list. Seattle at San Francisco. This is fun. This is fun. Two teams, unknown. One team expected to be a lot better because of health-wise. San Francisco's win total, really high, guys. Ten and a half. That's a tall order. For San Francisco. Seattle 7.5 So that's 18 in Las Vegas What's the Brockman total? Because you haven't You've gone up I've tossed up I actually think I actually think 18 is a Really good number for this total I'm sticking at 18 for this I will take the over I'll take the over on that Which team pushes this way over?
36:42Rich Eisen:I think the Niners do Yeah. Yeah, I think San Francisco is looking at 11-6, 12-5. Right. And then I think Seattle will put it over. The question is how far over? TJ? I'm picking 22 wins. Okay, so. 22 wins for both of these. What is the breakdown? I feel. You're a Sam Darnold believer then. Well, I feel like the Niners, because a lot of people are so down on them, I just have a feeling that they're going to be a lot better than what we think they are. 10.5 win total is really high for a team that was picking where they were last. I think I got them winning 12, and I got the Seattle winning 10. So Seattle playoff team then.
37:23Rich Eisen:That's tough right now. I mean, 10 wins. 10 wins is like, uh. I'm telling you, how about this? I think what's more likely? Multiple 10 wins. Or is this an overreaction? Multiple 10-win teams, one in each conference, will not make the playoffs this year. So Seattle was the only 10-win team last year that did not make it. There you go. Yes. And I think someone in the AFC is going to have that same going home. Last year, Cincinnati was 9-8. They missed out. Next up on the list here, we're getting more high rent. The first Sunday night football game of the season. The first game in the final year of Highmark Stadium.
38:02Rich Eisen:The Buffalo Bills taking on the team they bounced in last year's playoffs, the Baltimore Ravens. Christopher, what is the combined win total? Yeah, this is really fun. Two teams, obviously, with Super Bowl aspirations. They both have the same Vegas win total, 11 and a half each. So that's 23 total. I'm bumping this up. I think these two teams are awesome. I'm going to bump it up a whole win. I'm going to say 24 and a half. So that means somebody's going to. Jeez, 24 and a half. 24 and a half. That's just. Last year. Last year they went over. Last year they were 13-4 and 12-5. I'll take the over.
38:44Rich Eisen:TJ? 26. Okay. We all go over. We're all going over. Last one. The first game of the season. Dallas and Philadelphia. Yes. Give it to me. Yes. Yes. Yes. Give it to me. You know what's crazy? The Cowboy win total, 7.5. That is dangerous. I mean, same as the Patriots. Same as the Raiders. That's a land just a little bit. That is disrespectful. I mean, is Screamin' A in charge of that? Is he the one who set these numbers? And the Eagles is 10.5, which I also feel is super disrespectful. You're going to pay some juice to hit the over there, but super disrespectful. That's an 18 total. I'm going to say 20.5 for Philly and Dallas.
39:32Rich Eisen:Oh, well, I mean, Philly's going to have 12 wins, and Dallas will have eight. That's even low. What? And that's 20. That would be under. I know that. So I'll take the over where Philly gets 13 and Dallas gets eight. I'm going way over. I think Dallas is a 10-win team. They're going to have a really high explosive offense. I really think George Pickens adds a big element there. The running game will come around. And Philly is obviously. The number is 24. I already said, I already predicted Dallas would win 11. I put Philly at like 13. Wow. Okay. 24. Somebody's going to have to lose this season, by the way, guys.
40:15Yeah, I was just going to say.
40:16Rich Eisen:Well, there are going to be some bad teams. Any of you say under to any of these? You said under for Pittsburgh and the Jets because you're just low on those guys. I'm low on those guys. But I think there will be some bad teams. Was I under on Raiders Pets or did I go over? No, you went under on Raiders Pets. Yeah, there you go. Because you don't believe in the Patriots. But this guy does. Look out. I do. Look out. My God. No disrespect to you. My God. He's like, he's like, he's duck boat parading. All right, let's take a break. This is, this is exciting for us. We have not, I don't like math guys.
40:47Rich Eisen:Jeff Garland is going to join us next. I reached out to him. The passing of Ryan Sandberg. I said, I want to reach out to a diehard Cubs fan. Who's a favorite of this show to give a voice. Cause again, I don't, you know, being a New Yorker, I didn't watch Ryan Sandberg every day and didn't lionize him like every single human being on the north side of Chicago and most of all of Chicago. And I think even White Sox, he's one of those types of guys that you couldn't even hate Ryan Sandberg if you're on the south side, right? Definitely not. Rich Eisen here. Back here on the Rich Eisen Show, 844-204-RICH is the number to dial. John Sally is going to make his way into our studio space in short order. Radio audience will rejoin in just a couple of minutes, but let's bring him on right now. One of our dear friends of this program, diehard Cubs fan, Jeff Garland, back on the show. Good to see you, Jeffrey. How are you, sir? Great to see you, Rich. I am not great, but I'm great. Yeah, I know. You know, because what am I going to do?
42:32Yeah, it's really hard.
42:33Rich Eisen:Yeah, I know. I thought of you when I heard about the passing of Ryan Sandberg, and I'm like, you know what? Let's see if Jeff's in town and if he's up for talking about one of the great Cubs ever. So go for it. I can give something from the beginning to the end. The beginning is, now I've watched every game. thankfully WGN was one of those super stations. The only teams you could watch were the Cubs and the Braves. That's right. And the Cubs. And so I remember when Ryan was a rookie playing third base, and I think he went something like 0 for 30, his first, no joking around, 0 for 30. No, no hits.
43:20And they stuck with him. They stuck with him. And then from that moment on, whenever that zero for 30, he just took off prior to Ryan Sandberg. The Cubs were worthless. They were not good. After the Ernie Banks, Billy Williams, you know, Ron Santo era, the Cubs weren't relevant until Ryan Sandberg. He made them relevant again. He made them. You wanted to watch. You wanted to watch this guy play. And, you know, he excited me when he batted. And in the field, he was remarkable. Remarkable. Everything that went his way. A vacuum. And so watching him play was one of the three. He's my first baseball player.
44:14My dad loved Ernie Banks. I did too, all that stuff. But he's the first guy of mine. hmm yeah he passed away i know right it's hard it's so hard so over time the cubs used to have a party uh two suites at the dodgers game and they invite all the la cub people right and all the cub players were there rhino was always there that's how we got to know each other i'd sit with him alone and watch the game and of course everything about to tell you in my mind
44:54Rich Eisen:i'm going to say burn yeah i know right that's your guy that's your guy that's your guy and so but i remember a funny moment from one of those things and this is sort of like i really got to know him uh and i'm standing with my friend brad morris we're talking and ryan or rhino and his wife came over and the conversation sometimes somehow alluded to whether we knew anybody on the north side of chicago who could teach ryan how to ice skate i swear to god and so my friend my friend brad and i to this day make little ice skating jokes because that wasn't far left field talk about it you know wow and uh yeah and uh i'm still you know but i spent a good deal amount of time with him with ryan sandberg by the way our radio audience just rejoined us here jeff garland is on uh he joined us during the roku only segment i give you the floor again you were tearing up because you know about the passing of ryan sandberg at age 65 because you know he's only a few years older than me which is also when i think about it well again i say all the time that's following sports and being a sports fan sports sometimes uh stands for the passage of time you know what i mean yes the passage of time you know and and for ryan sandberg to pass away at age 65 i just like i said i wanted to give you the way the entire time i watched harry terry broadcast Ryan Sandberg, who was playing with Greg Maddox and Andre Dawson.
46:40It was so remarkable. And if I only could have taught the man how to ice skate.
46:46Rich Eisen:That's right. Exactly. What was he so good at for those who need to know, Jeff? Okay. Are you ready? I am. Everything. Everything. There was no ego. He laid down a bunt in any situation. He'd run hard. He'd play hard. He cared. You could see in the way he played, he cared so much. That's the thing. I mean, everything. He was the complete, Joe Posnansky called him about his, I don't know what the quote Joe Posnansky said. He said something very nice about Rhino being the perfect baseball player. And we have a question. Keep going. Go ahead. No, I was going to say that all the times that I spent with him, and it's a lot, he had the best sense of humor, best sense of humor.
47:39He was right with me, joking, joking. And he laughed, laughed, laughed. And the idea, I swear, I would think to myself, Brian Sandberg thinks I'm funny. Brian Sandberg, like there was no time that I wasn't in awe. I remember walking into this event at Harry Carey's restaurant, and I'm behind Ryan. I'm talking to somebody, and then Ryan turns around and goes, I know that voice anywhere. And I'm thinking, Ryan Sandberg knows my voice anywhere. There's never a moment where I'm not like, I can't believe I'm here. And I'll tell you, this one's hard. Last season, I celebrated in a private area at Wrigley.
48:23I don't know how I ended up there. Jim Obojkovic, who works for the Cubs, we were walking around. I was singing that day. Take me out to the ballgame. And I celebrated his last birthday, so his 66th, 65th birthday. Myself, Billy Williams, Jim, Ryan's wife, and maybe one or two other people. And I did think the whole time, Ryan Samberg on his birthday. And he was so happy. So happy. you know the cake the candles the whole thing and i thought what a private moment that i was privileged to experience and i'm and also i would go i'm in the same room with billy williamson that's right you never lose the little boy part of it or i was a young man that's why he was he was mine yeah i was in my uh i was it was young yeah we got a picture that you sent us uh it looks
49:18Rich Eisen:like it's you, Vince Vaughn, Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine, and then you are leaning on Sandberg's left shoulder right there. Joe on the end there, he works for the Cubs. I don't want him to be the mystery guy. Sure, okay. Yeah, but you can see the way my arm is on Rhino that we're friends. You know what I mean? You don't do that when you just first take a – I'm resting on his shoulder. We didn't make out, but I was very comfortable with him. I'm imitating my arm. But, yeah, he meant the world to me. And I knew yesterday that he was very, very ill. And then Jim Obojkovic, who I was talking to yesterday, because I'm going in a week or so to the Cubs game with Odin, Kirk, and Cusack, two guys that I've known since they were 12.
50:10Yeah, we're going next week. And I know they had to have hit them. I haven't talked to either one of them. But I was talking to Jim about arranging the tickets. And I said, how is Ryan Sandberg, knowing he was ill? He says, it's not looking good, not looking good. And he told me that his family, his kids, his grandkids all came in. And I thought, wow, he is really, I said, is he in hospice? He says, no, he's home. Now, I know for sure at that moment, Jim knew that Ryan had died. but he couldn't say to me because it wasn't released yet and and i said to him can i have uh an email can i send you something a note to send to ron and i wanted to tell him how much he meant to me i'm so sure you never say i'm sorry for crying but i'd like to have a sense of stoicism and composure.
51:09I'm on the air with Rich Eisen.
51:11Rich Eisen:I know. You have every right to do it. And I'd feel the same way about, you know, a guy who meant so much to me and obviously growing up as a Cubs fan. And it's exactly, you know, Jeff, the reason why I wanted to have on today for you to get voice to this. Yeah, these are, these are, it's the passage of time, but also these are family members. Jeff, go on here. That's the end of our number two here on the Rich Eisen show. We're still here on on Roku in the two minutes I have left, Jeff. Yes. You know, what what do you what do you think Ryan Sandberg meant to all Cubs fans? Because of when he showed up and how he conducted himself and a Hall of Fame career that thankfully his life lasted long enough for him to have seen a Cubs World Series as well.
52:02Do you want my opinion? My opinion is this. Yes, exactly. like me. They feel exactly like me. Some worse, some a little better, but that's pretty much the window of where Cub fans are. Now, you said something that even White Sox fans like, right? That's not true. They hate it, Ron Sanders. Is that right? White Sox fans hate Cub, the Cubs, the Cub fans in such a way you can feel it when you're near a White Sox fan or I go to a Sox game. You can feel it. People know I'm a Cubs fan. I get it. And, uh, but you have to know Cubs fans don't even, you don't even care about the white socks and they, oh my God, hate, hate.
52:47So I don't think anyone, any Sox fans doing a dance today, unless they're a South side alcoholic.
52:53Rich Eisen:Right. Um, but I think that, um, yeah, they're everyone, everyone who loves baseball is in mourning. Yeah. Yeah. Let's put it this way. I'm sure White Sox fans as a whole today appreciate what Ryan stood for. Most definitely. And even from the most mean-spirited White Sox fan to the Pope on the other side, right, are saying a prayer today. Well, the Pope, of course. Can you imagine the Pope saying, screw it, Sandberg? I don't even care. By the way, just a little, one more thing. Sure. I watched the Sandberg game on NBC. The one where he hit with the whole, the whole that's game time Homer and extras.
53:36Rich Eisen:And then another game time Homer and extra, right? Yes. And by the way, hitting two homers off Suter, who was great then. I have to say that it so profoundly affects me today. Profoundly. And we'll always, oh, and this right here. Yes. Okay. I, Boog Shampi had a thing for ALS. and I realized because I was friendly with Ryan and I was embarrassed to ever ask him, can you sign a ball? And this is what I've been on and got. I got it. It came a couple of weeks ago. Ryan Sandberg, Hall of Fame. He says Hall of Fame there. And I will obviously cherish this. Love you, Jeff Garland. Thanks for the time.
54:19I love you too, Rich. And I love being a friend of the show. I am a friend of the show.
54:27Rich Eisen:We'll see you later. We'll back on with John Sally in studio hour three. It was lovely.
