In short
Rich Eisen’s “Overreaction Monday” episode focuses on NFL contract drama and preseason outlook, centered on Micah Parsons’ Dallas Cowboys trade request and Jerry Jones’ comments about negotiations. It also includes Brent Musburger’s Hall of Fame (Pro Football Hall of Fame, Roselle Award) reflections and his Super Bowl contender predictions by division, plus a brief segment with “Jimmy Brockmire”/Musburger banter.
Guests (backgrounds)
- Brent Musburger: Legendary NFL broadcaster; inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame; Roselle Award winner.
- Liam Cohen: Head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars.
- Seth Rollins: WWE superstar.
- Matt Iseman and Akbar Bajabiamila: Hosts of American Ninja Warrior.
Key claims
- Parsons is “untradeable” (age 26, under contract) and Dallas will likely pay him; the dispute is framed as negotiation breakdown and “bad blood,” not injury/benching.
- Jerry Jones says the March offer/“meeting of the minds” was removed by Parsons, and Jones prefers dealing directly with the player over the agent.
- Musburger predicts only 11 Super Bowl contenders; he favors Eagles and Ravens, ultimately picking Ravens to win.
Notable examples
Parsons’ training camp appearance without uniform; Jerry’s “mommy/daddy” negotiation analogy; comparisons to Lamar Jackson and other “I’m out” situations; Super Bowl hangover concept; Musburger’s AFC/NFC contender list (Bills, Ravens, Chiefs, Chargers, Broncos; Eagles, Commanders, Rams*, Buccaneers, Packers, Lions).

1:28Rich Eisen:This is the Rich Eisen Show. How about the Cowboys? Would this suffice as breaking up with the team? From the Rich Eisen Show studio in Los Angeles. I no longer want to play for the Dallas Cowboys. My trade request has been submitted. Micah Parsons. Today's guests. Legendary broadcaster Brent Musburger. Jaguars head coach Liam Cohen. WWE superstar Seth Rollins. Hosts of American Ninja Warrior. Matt Eisman and Akbar Bajabiamila. And now, it's Rich Eisen. Oh, baby, what a Monday show we have in store. An overreaction Monday. And I'm not overreacting to say we have got one of our best lineups and a lot going on that we've had in quite some time.
2:16Rich Eisen:And I kind of feel like we do it every day. We're real lucky to be here with you. 844-204-RICH-NUMBER-ADAL right here on the Roku Sports Channel. This Rich Eisen Show, terrestrial radio affiliate. It's smart enough to have us on the Infinity Sports Network. We say hello to everybody listening out there on SiriusXM and Odyssey as well. My goodness gracious, do we have a lot to get to. Brent Musburger, fresh off of his induction to the Pro Football Hall of Fame. I cannot believe he was not already a Roselle Award winner. He is now fresh back from Canton, back up there in Montana. He's going to zoom in to get us set for the first big preseason week of football.
2:51Rich Eisen:Lots going on in the NFL. Liam Cohen, the head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars. You know how obsessed I am with Travis Hunter and how much they're going to put him on either side of the football. I could not wait to speak to the guy who actually is in control of all that. He's on the program. We've got Akbar Bajah, Biamila, and Matt Iceman back together again. Multiple times they've appeared together on this show. It is American Ninja Warrior tonight. The finals begin tonight on season, I believe, 93 ,000. of that show. It's like Law & Order. It's going on somewhere. Wherever it is in the world, it's playing as we speak.
3:30Rich Eisen:It's like the Beatles. Right. And then, boy, I cannot wait for Seth Rollins to appear on this program, Top of Hour Number 3. Lots to talk about with him. Good to see you over there, Christopher Brockwin. What's going on, sir? Rich, both my knees work and I'm happy to see you guys. Good to see you. Jay Felly in the mix. Good to see you, brother. And then TJ Jefferson, I feel we are all paying rent in your world with With the Dallas Cowboys absolutely everywhere in everybody's minds right now because it seems that everything's going out of your mind right now being a Cowboy fan. And then appropriately, you've got the Money in the Bank briefcase right behind you there because we're in the midst of the biggest story from SummerSlam from the weekend with Seth Rollins.
4:17Rich Eisen:So good to see you over there. The candle is lit, sir. I mean, someone said, are you sure he's hurt? I said, I'm 99 % sure because he said he was, but there's that 1%, and that's all it takes. Well, in terms of that, and we're going to get deeper into it, my reaction to watching Seth Rollins toss away the crutches and rip off his brace over his supposedly injured. That was crazy. Here was my reaction Saturday night. We have been hoodwinked, bad-food, led astray, run amok, and flat out deceived. Yeah, that was pretty much, man. That was you in the whole world, Phil. That summed it up. But we'll hit that later on.
4:54Rich Eisen:Has O'Shea recovered yet? He's crashing out. Do you have NCW later? Oh, yeah. Okay, Newt Contest Wrestling later on. We're going to be talking about this. This would be great. You want to, man. To wrap up SummerSlam, that would be very good. So, yeah, we've got lots to talk about. Seth Rollins joining us, top of our number three. Okay. Listen, we went off the air on Friday. Micah Parsons decided to demand a trade and basically said he doesn't want to play for the Dallas Cowboys anymore. And it's a shame because he grew up watching the team in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, and that's all he wants to do is sack people for the Dallas Cowboys and that he wanted a contract last year.
5:26Rich Eisen:And Dallas, his agent was like, let's wait. And he's like, no, let's not wait. I don't want to wait. And now yada, yada, yada. He now wants out because he wants a new contract now. He's got one year left on his deal. He's not going to play on that. Everybody knows he's not going to play on that. Everybody knows Dallas is going to sign him at some point. They have to. They're not going to trade him. He's basically untradeable at age 26. There's only four, there's only two people on planet earth that's ever played in the national football league or used to be on planet earth. Pardon me for artfully basically saying two people in the history of the national football league who started their career with at least a dozen sacks in his first four seasons of being an NFL player.
6:07Rich Eisen:One of them is Reggie White. The other one is Micah Parsons. We don't really need to go too deep into how damn good he is. but um he basically said he and jerry jones agreed to a handshake agreement and then he said i want to talk to my agent and then the joneses ghosted his agent and he laid it all in the lap of the joneses now i will also say this uh after you know going all in on this subject matter on friday just talking to a lot of people around the league there are some in the dallas organization if you speak to them uh potentially i guess off the record uh they want to do a deal with michael last year They are pushing back on what Micah's timeline of events, certainly in terms of last year, was.
6:53Rich Eisen:And they've been wanting to do a deal with Micah. And assumed that some sort of handshake agreement between Jerry Jones and Micah was at least the start of something, if not the end of something. And now here we are. And it's a whole, holy heck of a mess. so Jerry Jones over the weekend was speaking because Micah and this is no surprise Micah Parsons did not leave camp if he leaves camp that now puts the ball in the Cowboys court to basically say to him if you don't come back in five days we can basically send you home for the rest of the season so to say I don't want to be here anymore but I need to stay here makes complete sense for him to do that He showed up, because again, everything's a visual these days.
7:39Rich Eisen:He showed up for the first time all training camp without wearing his uniform, without wearing anything. He's just dressed in blues. That's it. There's no marks. There's no logos. There's no nothing. He's just out there, you know, supposedly with a back injury and things of that nature. We all know what's happening here. He wants his money. We all know Dallas is going to give him his money. We also know, like, trading him right now is just not going to happen. He is under contract, which is what Jerry Jones is reminding everybody every single time he's in front of a microphone. And he also is reminding everybody that he's not afraid to pay his players because just look at his quarterback and his wide receiver, two guys that he was in the midst of all of this last year.
8:20Rich Eisen:Again, this is one big mad lib. Just change the proper names and the positions. And last year it was Dak and CD. This year it's Micah. So Jerry, when he spoke to the throng of interested reporters over the weekend, basically told everyone, business as usual. And TJ, you should be able to sleep better than you potentially did all weekend long. Thank God. It seems like that we forget that it's been less than a year. And I paid the highest been paid in the NFL today. And I paid a big price for a lamp. And anybody that says I'm not interested in financially rewarding my players hadn't been looking at the tea leaves.
9:06And so there's always, always negotiation. And the negotiation is to put the best team on the field. Frankly, I could be any place in the world. And I want to be right here. I want to be right here with camp. I enjoy these players. Enjoy Micah. But as always, in any relationships, different moods at different times of your relationship. That's what it is. Don't lose any sleepover. One thing I would say to our fans, don't lose any sleepover.
9:42Rich Eisen:Don't lose any sleepover. Good. Hey, I could be on my yacht off of Santorini right now, and I'm standing here in Oxnard talking about this again. I could be anywhere, you know. don't lose any sleep over it meaning this is business he's viewing this as business business as usual and keep your emotions out of it is what he's trying to say no i it's clearly emotional um there's there's some emotion here there always isn't an emotion when when a negotiation in his mind gets tough and you've got to show some tough love and then of course you have to follow along his streams of consciousness here and pick and choose as to what is passive, aggressive, and what is just aggressive, or what is just him being him, right?
10:35Rich Eisen:He was asked if he was surprised by the trade demand. Did the request take you by surprise? Again, that's negotiation. I've heard that so many times in my 30 years in the NFL about from not just players but agents and of course we all understand contracts we're under contract that's what we're doing we're looking at adjusting the contract but we're under contract and we're in camp and that's the way the the rules are set up, but that is old stuff, 30 years of old stuff. Some of these issues we're hearing about trading, hurtbacks, all that kind of stuff. Trading, as in the rumors of them trading him or hurtbacks, like that's why he's not out there because of the hurtbacks.
11:33Rich Eisen:Ooh, my back. 30 years, he's cutting some years off of his time, isn't he? They're not trading him. It's just the only question is, like, does the bad feelings and the fact that he isn't talking to Micah, he did actually say that he's not talking directly to him just yet. And you'll hear that, I believe. Also just said in terms of the status of the relationship, it is what it is. Again, Lamar said, I want out. He's still with the Ravens, paid one of the best in the league. He won an MVP with the team after saying he didn't want to be there anymore. Yeah, this doesn't feel like the same. Okay, hold on a minute.
12:16Rich Eisen:Miles Garrett stared, just looked right at us at the Super Bowl. Okay? Before there was Seth Rollins, there was Miles Garrett. In terms of throwing this. Miles, so Seth, coming off. Coming on the Rich Eisen show and saying something that eventually did not turn out to be the case. Which is, I'm not playing anymore. It doesn't matter the amount of money that's putting there anymore. I'm not playing anymore for the Cleveland Browns. It's not happening. So there's all of that. But in the meantime, the question is, can things get so off the rails? Can things get so squirrely, to use, I guess, a Jerry Jones favorite, that it could lead to the lack of a resolution?
13:04and in terms of that it's just why are we here and clarence hill the longest tenured beat writer
13:11Rich Eisen:did ask jerry jones about everything that he came on this show which is like okay so did you have a handshake agreement and if so what happened to that and the minute that the handshake agreement happened and he said talk to my agent you haven't done so what's up with all of that like let's get down to the nitty and the gritty here because he jerry's already established it's a negotiation I'm not afraid to pay top of the market to my guys. I just did it last year. $60 million a quarterback and CeeDee Lamb darn near reset the market. Justin Jefferson's still in front, but be that as it may, this was his answer about the handshake stuff.
13:46The deal, the offer you had in March, the meeting of the minds, is that still on the table? Michael took it off. He took it off. So it's not on the table? He took it off. No, he took it off. I'm just saying he took it off. Don't put an answer there, please. He took it off. And because of that, that's why you're like, I don't want to negotiate with these people right now. Well, I know that I grew up when Mama wouldn't let me do something, going to Daddy, and Daddy let me do it, and going back in saying to Mama, Daddy said I could do it. I've had that old Mama Daddy stuff. We got here doing that by nature.
14:21So we're not going to do that.
14:24Rich Eisen:So just to describe to the radio audience here what you just heard also, you just can't make this up on a bingo card. Like here's Jerry Jones going to use an analogy of talking to mommy and daddy and playing those parents off of one another in a negotiation involving Micah Parsons. Nate Newton stands behind him. Can't make it up. That was Nate, by the way, in the background. And you know, it's just, it's just, so you just got to follow along here. Like, what do you mean? So when he took it off, do you mean he took it off the table because he then had the agent get involved? Is that the indication of he took it off the table?
15:01Rich Eisen:He just said, whatever we talked about, we're not doing that anymore. Because Micah said, basically, we had a talk, and I didn't think that that conversation was something like negotiating binding. I didn't think it was a negotiation. Ironclad. Right? And so then the concept is like, why aren't you talking to the agent? And that was a direct question. Hit it. Why would you yourself not talk to the agent? Because the agent, when we have a problem within the team and a player, I don't ever find the agent. He's nowhere to be found. Okay? Jay-Z said that Michael would make all, not Michael, but that Dez would make all meetings.
15:48Jay-Z and I negotiated the contract. We spent hours negotiating the contract. Jay-Z. And he said, anybody in my organization is on time. He said, my office used to be on the street corner, and I've always been early. So they will be on time. I said, where did I sign? But I'm going to call you. Finally, he quit taking my call. Well, Des and Micah have different histories. Again, again, please, I'm just talking about the agent. Don't take that to Micah and Des. just simply say that when the issues come up the first one and the one that is there is us and the player my experience hadn't been the agent is not the one that solves the problems you have when you're executing what you said you would do in the contract so I like to deal directly with the player when I'm, when it's of this nature.
16:45Rich Eisen:So Jay-Z entered the chat and, and, and then Des tweeted out very profanely, like, Hey, Jerry, you don't want to drag me into this. You know, can have story time if that's what we're doing. It's not smart to mention my name. Rock Nation then puts out a statement, you know, and like, so what, where is far from how much you're going to pay Micah and when, you know, like it, and again, Jerry wasn't talking about the negotiation of the deal and saying that Jay Z didn't have anything to do with the Des deal. He basically said that part of the negotiation involved what happens if Des is late to meetings, will you be there to help me hold him to account?
17:29Rich Eisen:And Jerry's like, well, they didn't. He kind of ghosted me on that. Whether that's true or not is a different story. And again, don't compare Des and Micah. You see what I'm saying? It just starts churning in directions other than resolution, which is where we're going to wind up anyway. I still believe it. I still believe it. Call me crazy. Feel free to do so. God bless you. Because they have no other choice. They already have problems with the middle of their defensive line, right? Habitually, year in and year out, trying to stop the run. What, are you going to just leave him at home? because he will go home.
18:08Rich Eisen:He will not show, or he'll be standing in his pajamas talking about his back on Thursday night kickoff in Philadelphia. I mean, you got Brian Schottenheimer out there. It's the first time. He's trying to put his stamp on things. Dak is back healthy. CeeDee Lamb's got George Pickens. You got stuff going on. The Eagles are going to be raising a banner. You're going to have Micah standing there in his pajamas because you couldn't figure this stuff out, and your mommy and daddy and Jay-Z and Dez and whatever. No, at some point, this is going to get hammered out. And hopefully the bad blood that whatever's going on inside that organization, the way they feel towards Michael, whether he's being truthful or not about what happened in the past, what the Joneses are saying now, this just makes no sense to say.
18:51Rich Eisen:Yeah, it makes that that I'm dealing with the player when it comes to disciplinary in the moment issues about living with each other day to day. so I'm not going to talk to the agent about the contract because that's what the agent is mostly there for. It makes zero sense.
19:11Rich Eisen:And what makes less than zero sense, if there's such a thing, is to not get this done with Micah Parsons. It's going to get done. Miles Garrett looked me in the eye and said, I will never play for the Cleveland Browns again. It's about winning the Super Bowl. How much? Cha-ching. That happened. Seth Rollins looked you guys in the face and said, my knee is busted up. I'm out for a long time. Wait a minute. Is that CM Punk in the ring? That did happen. I handed the man his crutches, Rich. Can I cash in the case now? Honestly, we've been there. We've done it. It's something to talk about because it's so unlike any other situation in the NFL.
19:54Rich Eisen:But it's going to happen. It's going to get done. and I do believe he believes it's a negotiation. A number will be put on the table. At some point, they're going to have to get together, and you can sleep. You'll be sleeping all right. Good, because this weekend was rough. I hear you. Let's take a break. I felt the same way when I heard the Pete Roselle Award winner was Brent Musburger. this year. And he finally got his due. And he's kind enough to join us here after his Canton weekend right here on the Rich Eisen Show, the great Brent Musburger. Good to see you, Brent. How are you? I'm fine, Rich. Thank you so much. It was a memorable, memorable weekend. And I was so excited. You know, there were 100 Hall of Famers who showed up, okay?
23:06And Dan Fouts, Rich did a fabulous job of introducing each of them. And you have been there. They come up in the center of that stage. And then they form two rows outside just down below the steps. And the four new Hall of Fame members come through them. It was a heck of a weekend. I enjoyed everything about it.
23:26Rich Eisen:Yeah, and you got a great view from the dais, right? Nice bird's eye view like you're up there in the booth, right? Back in the day. And seeing all this go down and that you're referring to the jacket dinner where, again, you made a speech on Friday night. Who did you see this past weekend that you hadn't seen in a very long time, Brent, that you're excited to reacquaint? Well, Larry Zonka for one, okay. And when we finally took our airplane, a little delayed on Sunday, he was sitting right in front of us with his wife. And my goodness, takes me back to those great days of the Miami Dolphins. But I'd go on, Michael Urban, Tony Dorsett, I covered Tony Dorsett when he was at Pittsburgh as a college player and then with the Dallas Cowboys.
24:12Dick Vermeule, I mean, we went out to lunch, one of the great storytellers of all time, and it was good with Jared Allen when he, Vermeule presented him with the jacket, and Vermeule had difficulty because, you know, before Allen ripped his pants. That's right.
24:31Rich Eisen:You need a step ladder. Got to get a step right over those shoulders. Yeah. James Lofton I saw at the airport. We had a long talk knowing him for years. It was just so many great memories with all of them. And Antonio Gates, you know, Rich, that was special. When you go back and look at his career, he never played a down of college football. Isn't that amazing? Not a down. Now think about it. There's nobody else in the Hall of Fame that didn't play any college or amateur football. and then he became a Hall of Fame tight end with the Chargers. No, it was great. Apparently the story goes with Gates is that Nick Saban wanted him to play football at Michigan State, offered him, but he also wanted to play for Izzo.

25:15Rich Eisen:And the answer was no. So he's like, all right, I'll go play basketball at Kent State. Now look where he is. He's in Canton. Unbelievable. And, you know, he took Kent State. Also, as we pointed out, he was a way above average college basketball player. He took Kent State to the Elite Eight. Now that's accomplishing something, my man. And so it was one great. And then the Sharps, first brothers to go in. Sterling I knew really well because he was the only one of the four who was drafted in the first round. And listen, I had to tease him. I said, wow, first set of brothers to go in, Sterling. I said, I'll tell you what, the Bandings are very unhappy with you.
25:58And he laughed and broke up. I had to tease him. And I sincerely hope that the Manning brothers also become the second set of brothers to make the Hall of Fame. But next year, you know who's going in, my man, Bill Belichick. They changed the rule. They did. And coaches only have to be out one year to be eligible for the Hall of Fame. He will be unanimous. He'll be unanimous. So we'll wait and see if he brings his very attractive girlfriend with him to the gold jacket ceremony. You know what I mean, Rich?
26:30Rich Eisen:Brent Musburger, you never change, sir. How dare you even think of changing? You just be you, Brent. I love it. Yeah, and Breeze is a first ballot guy next year. Larry Fitzgerald is a first ballot guy next year. And it's entirely possible Witten could be one as well. And, you know, it just gets tougher every year, it seems, to get into Canton. you know you know rich i want to point out one player i was really surprised is not in there in the hall of fame they have the black hall of fame and back in the day a lot of the younger people don't realize that back in the day a lot of the great athletes went to the black colleges and universities right i thought doug williams was in the hall of fame now he is the first african-american quarterback to win a super bowl and he was the mvp i thought for sure he'd be in but he's not so i hope the old-timers committee remember he was extremely nice to deal with the nfl today had has great memories of uh of doug williams and the interviews we did with him yeah i mean plunkett's not in either which is i think something that needs to be rectified but uh and again the voting has changed and and we shall see but you you deserved it who did you think of you know when you're putting your speech together and just walk me through your memory lane that you strolled as you were getting set to speak in Canton and accept this honor, Brent?
27:54Well, you know, there were so many great announcers through the years. You know, Vince Scully was with it at CBS, and I so admired him. And he called that great pass from Joe Montana to Dwight Clark in the end zone. I remember that was Scully's last game with us. He left and went back to the Dodgers full-time. Dick Enberg was another great friend. Kurt Gowdy, the old cowboy from Wyoming. People don't realize he was a heck of a basketball player when I was a youngster growing up. So I owe so much to all of these guys because I learned from every one of them. And of course, with the NFL today, Rich, it's so sad for me that Phyllis George, Jimmy the Greek and Irv Cross were not there with me.
28:44Now they surprised me. Jane Kennedy actually came out and introduced me. It was great seeing her because Jane and Phyllis were the two women who held it together. Oh, by the way, they preferred seeing Phyllis and Jane to Brent Irvin, a Greek. I'm talking about the players. When you come out to interview them. And there in the background is Jack Whitaker. If you'll find pictures, Jane in the middle with Irvin, a Greek. Back in the day before the NFL today, Jack Whitaker hosted the pregame show with Pat Summerall, but they taped it on Friday night, Friday night. And then they played it before the game.
29:21So Bob Wessler said, Brent, can we go live? I said, well, you know, I don't see why not. And so off we went. But I owe so much to so many people who and, you know, you forget the great directors and producers you work with. You know, Bob Fishman was our first director on the NFL today. Duke Strzok came along. Mike Pearl was in there as our producer. I mean, people don't realize, yeah, we're the front guys. We're the face of what they do and everything. But behind us, we've got all these great cameramen and tech. I went into the talk. And by the way, NBC, I have to thank them so much for their game and inviting me to appear with Maria Taylor and then later with the guys upstairs.
30:05It was great. I just wish the Detroit Lions had shown up like the rest of us. You know what I mean, Rich?
30:13Rich Eisen:Does that mean you took them and gave the point? Is that what you're saying? Am I picking up on that? Yes. Yes, my man. One other thing, Rich. Your name came up. There was a word on the street. Are you going to San Paolo? It's potentially out there, Brent. This is in the ether. I appreciate you bringing it up because calling games is something I adore doing. I can't get enough of it. And somebody who, of anybody who I speak to, you get this. Doing what I do for a living on a Sunday, thanks to largely in part you and the rest of that crew we just saw on the NFL today back in the day, I talk about things either in advance or after.
31:03Rich Eisen:And to be able to do it while it's happening and describe the action, as you've done so many years as well, nothing like it. There really is nothing like it. Absolutely. I'd love to listen to you and Kurt Warner from London. Thank you. You know, those early in the West Coast, I got to get up at 630 to hear my man Rich. But listen, if you are headed in. Yes, sir. What a game. I'm going to tell you, AFC West, the Chargers, with a home game playing the Chiefs. And I want everybody to hang on a little bit. There is something to the Super Bowl hangover. Trust me, look it up on what happens to teams after they lose a Super Bowl.
31:45That's not saying I'm putting them down. They've got arguably the best coach in the league now in Andy Reid and the best quarterback in Patrick Mahomes. But look back at San Francisco last year. one injury after another, okay? There is something to that, okay? And in that division, that opens the door for the Chargers and Jimmy Harbaugh, the Broncos and Sean Payton, and he has a quarterback who has to overcome the sophomore Jenks, Bo Nix, and then Pete Carroll. I admire what my team, the Raiders, have done, but can you move up in a division that tough? It's going to be interesting. I mean, what a fabulous opening weekend.
32:24The Cowboys, Jerry Jones, will Micah be there on Thursday night in Philadelphia? The media's got a story. And then, hey, look at what the gang gets to do on Sunday night at NBC. Drew Esikhoff will be directing the Baltimore Ravens at the Buffalo Bills. I can't wait for the opening weekend. I'm so excited. And, oh, by the way, you mentioned in my V-CEN friends, you've got to take a look at teams. There you are, the week one schedule. Look at that. I mean, it's a blockbuster opening up, all right? One great game after another. I am concerned, Rich, about Matthew Stafford. I do not like the reports about his back, and I think I read that he was going in for still another examination.
33:10People should keep their eye on that. Now, can San Francisco bounce back and win the division? How about up in Seattle, all right? What will they do without the great Geno at quarterback? I am going to take a play on the Cardinals to ambush everybody. Good price. So people who want to bet the divisions right now, look for the price, not just the favorite. That's my tip of the day.
33:35Rich Eisen:I love it. Mr. Vee-Sin himself. Pete Rozelle, Radio and Television Award recipient. Brent Musburger here. So let's do this, if you don't mind, because we were doing this the other day on our program. Super Bowl contenders, teams that you truly believe, have a shot to make Santa Clara and potentially win it. And I'd love to go division by division, if you don't mind. And you tell me how many teams in this division are, in your mind, Brent Musburger, Super Bowl contenders, and we'll tally up the amount at the end. Let's start with the AFC East. How many Super Bowl contenders reside in that division, do you believe?
34:14Rich Eisen:One, Buffalo. Okay, that's it. End of story. End of story. How about the AFC North, Brent? Yeah, here we are. One, Baltimore. I'm not going to include Cincinnati. I can't trust them defensively. I don't like how the front office has handled the signing of the rush man. I'm going to go with Baltimore in that division alone. What about the Steelers with Rodgers now in the mix, Brent? You know, the Steelers always let me down when they get to the playoffs. OK, and how much how much does the future Hall of Famer Aaron Rodgers have left? OK, there were good games with the Jets, especially toward the end.
35:01But there were some bad games with Aaron Rodgers. Now, look, first ballot, automatic Hall of Famer, great quarterback, somewhat stubborn. And we have to see how he gets along with the with the new O.C. that he's working with. I know he has praised him and everything. but that OC likes to run the football a little bit. We'll see what happens. I would say Super Bowl contender. Now, listen, I like Mark Tomlin, obviously. I mean, what, never finished under.500? That's great. Love the Steelers organization. The Roonies cut great stories about Mr. Art Rooney himself. I tell you, I have to tell you this, Rich.
35:41Go, please. On the Sunday that JFK had been assassinated on Friday, okay, and Pete Rozelle, and he later confided in all of us, that he made a mistake. But the league went ahead and played on Sunday, okay? And I didn't want to be there. I was covering the Chicago Bears as a newspaper man, okay? Went into the press box early, went out with the team, and it was an empty, barren. It was a terrible Sunday. I went down to get a cup of coffee, and there was an elderly gentleman standing down there in a corner, and I complained about it. And he said, what can I do for you, young man? So I introduced myself, and he said, I'm Art Rooney.
36:18and it was the man himself and he said let me make you feel a little bit better get a cup of coffee and then he reached inside his coat and he pulled out a little bottle of Jack Daniels and he poured it in my coffee and I felt better covering that game great game by the way Mike Ditka you got go see Mike Ditka's great run the Bears had to have a tie in that game and it was awesome
36:43Rich Eisen:I did not see the end of that story coming, but it's fantastic. I love it. All right, so you've got the Bills and the Ravens so far as the only Super Bowl contenders halfway through the divisions in the AFC. The South, does the AFC South in your mind have a Super Bowl contender in it?
37:05I would like to say Houston, but I'm not. I'm going to exclude the South. No Super Bowl contender.
37:10Rich Eisen:All right, now we get to the West, where you were talking about the deep end of this AFC pool. How many are in there? Okay. We cannot eliminate the Chiefs because the last time they did lose the Super Bowl to Tampa Bay and Tom Brady, they got to the championship game and lost to Cincinnati. So the Chiefs have to be in there, okay? And I'm going to put the Chargers in there and the Broncos. You like the Broncos. Everybody should know I'm biased. You know, I'm a seasoned dickhead with the Chargers, but I mean with the Raiders. But Jimmy Harbaugh, Jimmy Harbaugh is the real deal. And what we all should have remembered in that preseason game the other night is John Harbaugh with the Ravens wins preseason games.
37:52OK, and Jimmy looked just like his brother in that opening game. So I'm going to put three from the AFC West in there.
38:00Rich Eisen:OK, so that's a total of five in the AFC. How many NFC East teams are Super Bowl contenders in your estimation, Brent? I'm going to take two. I got a little reservation on the second. Obviously, the Eagles. I mean, there's no doubt in my mind. I'm going to put Washington in there, but my reservation is I don't like what's going on with McLaren. I know Micah Parsons gets all a pub with the Cowboys, but McLaren is a heck of a go-to receiver. Kind of underrated, and I would like to see him stay there, but I'm going to put the commanders. I think Jaden Daniels is a real deal. I mean, he really impressed me last year when I watched him, Rich.
38:40Rich Eisen:So the Cowboys are not in that mix in your estimation. No, no, the Cowboys aren't ready to make that push. They've got injuries, retirements, I guess, in the offensive line. They got a new head coach. I can't, I've got this problem with Mike. I cannot put them. Now, listen, I love Jerry Jones. I'm going to tell you right now. I don't think the Raiders are able to move to Las Vegas without Jerry Jones support. However, all of us, all of us believe, like Jerry, that he needs a middleman. He needs a middleman to get between him, the agents, and the players. Okay? You've got to have that today. As a great leader, you need to step away just a little bit.
39:25Look at the Hunts. Look at the Hunts. Arguably the best front office in all of the National Football League. But there's a middleman there. There's a good general manager. Okay? He steps in. and he takes the brunt of the criticism from the agents and everything. I think Jerry needs one more guy to step between him and the great players like Micah and the rest of them they got on the Cowboys.
39:48Rich Eisen:Okay, so let's go to the NFC West. I know you said you had concern about Stafford. You're high on the Cardinals. How many Super Bowl contenders? I would not put the Cardinals in a Super Bowl team right now. I will put the Rams in there with the asterisk, okay? And that's the Stafford injury situation. I put them in. The Niners? I have to tell you that the world's in love with the 49ers. Everybody thinks they're going to bounce back and have a great year. I'm not going to put them in there as a Super Bowl contender, okay? I just, there are some current concerns in my mind about that team. Injuries at the wide receiver position keep piling up and piling up.
40:38Yes, Brock Purdy's got his contract. Yes, I like Purdy, love the coaching staff, love the front office. But I'm just, I'm not going to put him up there. So you see, I've got fewer teams in the NFC. I think it's a smaller field. I mean, I think the Eagles have to be overwhelming favorites to win the NFC again. I mean, arguably the two best wide receivers together. Jalen Hurts, different kind of quarterback. But that young man is a winner when you look at his entire life. The offensive line, they've just got to replace the right guard. And they've got one of the best offensive lines. You've got to score points in the National Football League.
41:17You have got to put points on the scoreboard, okay? And the Eagles can flat out do that.
41:23Rich Eisen:All right. So do you have, just finishing up the NFC South, do you have anybody in there as a contender? Do you like the Bucs? Yeah, let's put the Bucs in there. I like to say something about Baker Mayfield. I think he has really, that's someone who didn't give up on his career after he washed out on his first team. I like what they do. They can score. And Bowles is just such a nice young man. coach. Let's put them on the list. Now, I'm not going to put Atlanta, certainly not the Saints, or Carolina on there. I don't think they're Super Bowl contender teams. All right. Lastly, the NFC North then.
42:05Rich Eisen:We'll finish up big and strong. What do you have? Oh, yeah. Here we go. All right. Here we go. Of course, I'm eliminated in Chicago. I think there's a lot of talk that Johnson's going to... That's not going to happen. And believe it or not, I'm going to eliminate Minnesota until I see J.J. McCarthy. Everybody kind of assumes that he's going to step in. We don't know. He's a rookie. I mean, let's hold on. The other two teams, obviously, I'm going to put on the list. Detroit, even though I was terribly unimpressed with them the other night, that wasn't their starting lineup that let us down. And definitely the Green Bay Packers.
42:43I think that if you're looking for a division long shot in the North, the Packers are the way to go. That's a good roster. The quarterback's now got some experience under his belt, and I'll put the Packers on that list.
42:59Rich Eisen:All right, your total is 11, Brent, Super Bowl contenders. Bills, Ravens, Chiefs, Chargers, Broncos, and the AFC, Eagles, Commanders, Rams with an asterisk, depending on the most important chiropractor in the Los Angeles area, apparently exactly uh bucks packs and pack and lions that's 11. you want to take your top of august shot at super bowl the super bowl yeah you're my exact what do you got for me and your exact what do you think what do you have for me for my exacto would be philadelphia and baltimore eagles ravens you want to take one last shot you want to you want to boil it down one more time I'm going to go with John Harbaugh and Jackson to win that Super Bowl.
43:48Now, Jackson, listen, Jackson's going to have thoughts in his head when they hit the playoffs, and he's got to overcome that, that he can win that last big game. But let's remember now, it was his fine tight end who let him down in the end with that drop around the end zone. Okay, so John is experienced, knows what to do. My goodness, what a coaching family. I go back for his father. But now they have to make sure they can replace the Hall of Fame kicker. And we'll watch that in the preseason. I do like the new kickoff rule. I watched it carefully in the Hall of Fame game, Rich. And we are going to have more returns, I'll tell you, for sure.
44:33because the penalty on a bad kick, there was a penalty on one of them, and they brought the ball to the 40-yard line. You can't afford to give up that kind of field position, if you know what I mean.
44:43Rich Eisen:Yeah, they made it more pricey to commit a penalty on it. Hey, Brent, thanks for the time. Couldn't be more happy for you and your family. So long overdue. You know how I feel about you, Suze, too, all of us here at the show. Love you, man. Thanks for the time. Awesome. Thanks a lot, Rich. I enjoyed every minute of it. And thanks for your support. We so much appreciate it. I love it. Thank you. And look for more of my text calls. I'd love to have you throughout the season. Love to get your thoughts on everything, as always. You got it. Okay. 46:27Rich Eisen:What is going on with you, Jim Brockmire, and Brett Musburger? This is my Musburger face. No, you can't put that to bed, Rich. You know why you can't put it to bed? Okay. Because he's a punk. That's why. Brett Musburger is a P-U-N-K punk. The man is a thief. Okay? Brett Musburger is a thief. How so? Stole my line. What line was that? This is for all the Tostitos. Remember that? This is for all the Tostitos. Remember when he said that? Everybody in the business, no, it's not funny. Everybody in the business knows that was my line. But he went ahead and used, that's what I always yell when I climax inside of a woman.
47:05Or when I'm just, when I climax all by myself. Musburger knew that was my line. He used it anyway at the BCS title game. And ever since then, now I have to yell out, Ruffles have ridges. And it's not the same thing. So verdict, what's the verdict of all that?
47:21Rich Eisen:What did you take from that? He's a punk. Musburger's a punk That's right Here is Brett Musburger How are you, Brent? Hey, Rich, Rich, I'm great Listen, you guys, you and the producers You deserve, oh man, a pat on the back I'm so proud of you guys For trying to help resurrect little Jimmy Brickmeyer's career We all know the problems We all know the problems that he had in the past But if anybody can help Brickmeyer, it's you, Rich Yeah, well, he says that you stole all the Tostitos from him, Brent. Is that true, or what do you know from back in the day? No, I got paid. I got paid by a company to drop the name.
48:04I got free Tostitos for a week. What are you talking about? Okay. What's he talking about, you know? The man's delusional. We know he's got mental problems to break down, you know. It's really interesting because as we started B-Cin here in Las Vegas, and Brickmeyer was having trouble getting a job. So he called our executives, and, you know, I've got to be perfectly honest. Don't tell anybody this, but we always talk to prospective announcers just to get an idea. Do they really know anything about sports gambling, or are they just pretending? And I got to tell you, our general manager, he interviewed Rick Meyer and asked him about a three-team parlay.
48:54And our boy, Jimmy, he thought that that was two hookers with him in a Morristown hotel room. I'm telling you, you know? You know, Jesus, we would have loved to help him out of this, but we just can't. I wish him the best. He's so delusional. And listen, let him go at it. All the Tostitos, baby.
49:17Rich Eisen:All of Brett Musburger's great appearances on this program, including that of old Jimmy Brickmeyer. Hank Azaria, who, if I'm not mistaken, debuted his his
49:34Rich Eisen:Brockmeyer with us, right? Way back on the old show. He did it back in the day for obviously Funny or Die is how he created it. But then he came on our podcast. Yeah, like once a month. Once a month. Review the plays of the month and all that fun stuff back in the day. Yes, be moved. Great Hank Azario. It's all about just basic. It's all on our YouTube channel. And be careful. You can go down a wormhole, an algorithm, and it's tough to get out of it, which, by the way, we don't mind. 50:09Rich Eisen:Liam Cohn of the Jaguars and Overreaction Monday coming up in hour two. And then there's Seth Rollins. Jeff in Detroit. Let's take his call. What's up, Jeffrey? How are you, sir? What's going on, fellas, fellas, fellas? What's up, Jeff? I really enjoyed you guys. Let me just start like this. Mom just passed, man. Thank you for being there for me. Sorry. You guys have been excellent. And it's one of those things, you got to go through it. You can't go around. You know what I'm saying? And your week of shows, Sally, everybody, has just been phenomenal. Thank you. With the start of the NFL season, you were just talking a minute ago about Lamar Jackson going through the same thing that Michael Parsons went through.
50:50Rich Eisen:My question to you guys is this. Knowing what we know now, Lamar Jackson, MVPs, his run, he really didn't get that much play when Baltimore let him go search for a contract. My question is, if we know what we know now, do you think the situation would have been different? Because, I mean, you figure like what happened in Cleveland with my man. With Deshaun Watson and everybody else there? Yeah, Deshaun Watson, most definitely. And you would want, I mean, a Lamar Jackson. Knowing what we know now, I would have gave up the captain. And everybody assumed that he would be that guy. And thanks for the call, Jeff, and our condolences, obviously.
51:34Rich Eisen:We're up against the end of the hour. So I wanted to say that. And listen, that's what's front and center in the conversation about, you know, collusion and things of that nature. I mean, pro football talk's been all over that story. Again, at the end of the day, everybody in the league thought the Ravens were never going to let him go. And all you were trying to do was just come up with a contract that they would just rubber stamp and give to Lamar and figure out their problem for him. But, yeah, I'd spend the ones on him. I'd spend the ones on Lamar Jackson. Jeff said, knowing what we know now, knowing what we knew then, it should have been a deal that someone should have reached out for.
52:17Rich Eisen:What we knew then is he didn't want to be on the Ravens, you know, and all you were hearing from the Ravens was we love him. There were rumblings about his conditioning, rumblings about his want to, rumblings about why he wasn't with the team by the end of the year. It was unhealthy. None of it was healthy. But the Ravens never once wavered ever, ever publicly about not wanting him. Never once. John Harbaugh was enveloping him with hugs, verbal hugs and kisses, even after he demanded a trade just as Harbaugh was sitting down in front of the media. You know, but that's ancient history. That's done now.
52:52Rich Eisen:That's gone now. He is clearly one of the best in the league, apparently struggling with throwing the football a little bit. I mean, that's what he says, that his hand's a little bit too much on top of the football or something like that. I mean, these are the early August dog days while we're waiting for football to be played. But I think Brent kind of hit it right there in his appearance on the program. He said, in between the temples, right? That's the phrase I heard all the time at the American Century Championship. Tough as six inches in golf is right in between your temples, right? And so when the playoffs hit, can he slow it down?
53:32Rich Eisen:And can he just avoid the mistakes? And can they just continue on the way that they normally dominate a regular season? Can we see it? Will it be healthy enough? You know? Can they catch a wide open touchdown pass in the end zone? I mean, don't forget, Zay Flowers was going in to try and make that a game in the AFC championship game against the Chiefs. And then just an incredible play ball comes out and everything changes. It's not the kid's fault. Plus, Zay Flowers got hurt last year. I was talking about Mark Andrews. I know what you're saying. I mean, I'm just pointing out how things happen, right?
54:03Rich Eisen:And so Ravens are as great a pick to win the AFC as any. They're the betting favorite. They are? Brent didn't really go out on a whim. He took the Eagles and the Ravens, the two favorites in their conferences. And the Ravens are the Super Bowl favorites. That makes sense. It makes sense. How will they replace Justin Tucker, who wasn't so automatic last year anyway? Nope, and this new kid is draining 60 yarders of watching video of that over the weekend, so I think they're going to be fine. Just a great appearance by Brent, who had 11 Super Bowl contenders. I had 15, Chris had 12, and TJ, you had 13.
54:40Rich Eisen:No, seven. Yeah, TJ had seven. You just had seven, right. 13 was Schlereth. Yeah, Schlereth. And then it was just great to catch up with Brent, certainly when he went full AJ McCarron's girlfriend, Bill Belichick. Liam Cohen and Overreaction Monday coming up in hour number two.
