1:27Romesh Ranganathan:Hey, bitches. Welcome to the Thursday edition of the Ramesh Ranganathan Show. I'm here with my mum, Shanthi, and the team who so far remain fairly anonymous apart from the old Song and Snipe. What a little nest of pricks they are. Every Thursday, we chat about Monday's celebrity ep, answer listener questions, and have a really great time in each other's company. Love you, mother. Love you too, son. And actually, love you guys. love you too mum big news we're on the precipice of spring the spring equinox is tomorrow have you shut down the spring equinox is tomorrow mum oh hi
2:13Romesh Ranganathan:what are you talking about Do you think one of these guys is called Spring Equinox? I didn't understand the word. Equinox. It means spring's about to start. What's your favourite part of spring? Daffodils comes, all the flowers come. Everything is colourful, the garden. I love it. Yeah. I like colour. You like colour. Mum, we've battled through the dark, cold, rainy months. We've almost made it through to the other side. Can you, my mum, and mum of the podcast, introduce the show like you've got a real spring in your step? Me.
2:52can you just show us again what a spring in your step looks like and introduce us our show please with a real spring in your step a little pep in your step
3:05Romesh Ranganathan:okay how how just with a bit of energy my step yeah okay hi everyone Everyone. How is this difficult? Love you all. Welcome to the Romesh Ranganathan show. Okay. Woof woof. Yeah. Woof woof. Woof woof. Very springy. Well done, mum.
3:33It's the Romesh Ranganathan show. With me, Shanti.
3:42Romesh Ranganathan:Welcome to the Ramesh Ranganathan Show. And Shanti. Now, on Monday, we had mathematics professor Dr. Hannah Fry on the show, who's inspiring us all to see maths and science in everyday lives. Mum, what are you like at maths?
3:59I found out that when you want to apply for or to do medicine, they don't ask for maths. Is that true?
4:11Romesh Ranganathan:Who told you that? I found out recently. Yeah, you have to do the maths GCSE, but you don't have to do it at A-level. You don't do it for A-level. No, not to become a doctor. Okay, okay. Why? I only found out now. Yeah, but why would you need a maths A-level? I just asked. I think people who know maths, in my head, they are clever people. Right. I like maths. What about people who know biology and stuff like that? Biology and stuff... Thick-oes. Because maths is solving problems. Yeah. Biology is creating them if you don't wrap up. In the book, you memorize it and you write it down. That's not true.
4:46It is.
4:47Romesh Ranganathan:You're being very reductive there. The biology is about the body, isn't it? Yeah. Or it's there. Yeah, organisms.
4:56So what is there to learn?
4:59Romesh Ranganathan:Everything, fucking everything. Yeah, describe everything in the book. You memorize it, the words, and the question comes. You write it down. Math is solving problem. No, no. You're being really unfair to people that study biology. And so what are you saying? Doctor, Will, did you study biology? Okay, sort of goes against it a bit. This actually makes sense. Taking the gloss right off my argument. Maybe you're right, they're all thick.
5:27Romesh Ranganathan:Did you do maths? No. No, okay. Mum, did you like it when I was a maths teacher? You are a maths teacher. Are we going to snip these? You know where I ask her a question and she stops for what feels like 45 minutes to an hour? You'll just snip that, right? People are asking for longer episodes. That's what it would be, mum, like this. I ask her a question. How are you today, mum?
5:53Romesh Ranganathan:What do you mean? Don't ask fucking stupid questions. Are you imitating me?
6:07you waste your time imitating me yeah say something useful okay people can absorb okay
6:13Romesh Ranganathan:fine okay sorry sorry sorry did you like it when i was a maths teacher i did right because you're very clever so you've got lovely bets i used to feed you lots of fish to have a brain for maths it worked you were absolutely wonderful there you are anything else you want me to say? no, thank you Hannah's got loads of tips and tricks and the team thought we might like to give one a go are you up for that? so she's got a tip for opening a difficult jar we have some of these jars left over from when Sophie Ellis-Bexter came on because she likes pickles I know how to do it you can't open a jar there is actually a scientifically It's a perfectly legitimate trick that you can use here.
6:58It means you'll never have to struggle again. What you've got to do is just, the moment you're ready to give it some way, is just forcibly breathe out.
7:07Romesh Ranganathan:Is that real? I tried. I tried. It worked. It worked. I tried, Romesh. I tried. OK, do you want to try with this? Yeah, OK. I tried. Do you need to do it not breathing out and then breathing out? OK, try it without breathing out, then, Mum.
7:25No.
7:26Romesh Ranganathan:Okay, now do a big... Not before, during. Breathe in, breathe in, and then go. No. You didn't breathe out. I think you misunderstood it. She didn't say shit yourself. You inhale before you start doing it, and then as you do it, you go... Exhale. No, no. You try. Okay. I did it at home, but... Okay, ready? Oh, my! Oh, fucking hell!
8:04Well done, Romain! Fuck's sake! You best professor. I call you a nutty professor.
8:15Romesh Ranganathan:Anyway, well, thanks, Hannah. Nutty professor. Fuck's sake. I love it. Anyway, it worked. We also gave her a gift. It was a Tesla coil. Have a look at this. Is it on? Do I just turn it on? It is on, yeah. OK, there's a tiny light. Oh, that is underwhelming, isn't it? Oh, God, it's not doing anything. Shit. Hang on. Is that up? Yeah, that's... Is it doing what it's supposed to do now? I don't think so, no. That's it, so there you go. It was like blue sparking everywhere. No, it did that a bit earlier.
8:57Romesh Ranganathan:there you go why why did that suddenly happen like that so that was fun wasn't it yeah so is that what it's supposed to do yeah what's the point of it shows you like lightning doesn't it? Why is that better than those? Do you remember those little things the Van de Graaff, you know like the you used to be able to get them in innovations catalogue didn't you? With the lights and then you touch the outside of the globe and it would go to your fingers I mean that looked less impressive than that Why is that more amazing? That was a Bluetooth speaker as well so it would go in time of the music No it wouldn't It wouldn't That would not go in time of the music We did test it, we tried to do the Romesh Ranganathan show And what happened?
9:45Romesh Ranganathan:Well, it didn't really. No. It just sort of went. Of course it didn't. Would you like one of those for your birthday, mum? No, thank you. No, thank you. Tis the quote. No. What should I have that? No? I'm not that cheap, okay? How do you know how much it is? No. I don't care. I don't care. You don't want one? No. Thank you. Okay. A couple of emails need to be sent. Okay, it's time to interact with our listeners. Thank you to our listeners and viewers for their support. We love hearing your feedback. Mostly good. Some question my loyalty as a son and to Big Tom D, but it's all good. I just do a bit of...
10:24Romesh Ranganathan:I actually do do this. I actually do a bit of chat GPT therapy and it sorts me out. Should I have a look at some of the things I've asked it recently? Is Uber available in Sunderland? That was one. Do you talk to it or do you talk to it? Any Turkish restaurants near Farringdon? These aren't quite as salacious. Do you talk to it or do you... How do I stop getting bogeys? Do you not hear me? Do you talk to it or do you... No, I type it in. I asked for a recipe, I got it. It's called... I'm doing a podcast and people keep asking to see the team. They're hideous. What should I do? That's another one.
11:04What did it say?
11:05Romesh Ranganathan:It said, if you're talking about Ben Green, yes, he is a c***. Do you think some people might not realise that we are actually good friends? Realise? No, Ben and I are really good friends. Really good. We've been friends for like a decade now, haven't we? I mean, I've never been invited to your house. Why? Do you invite him? Yeah. I've stayed. You're such a liar. I just assume you would... Is that serious? Because I assume you would never come in a... We have invited you for lunch. No, you haven't. We have invited you for lunch. No, you haven't. This is not an invite. You come for lunch whenever you want.
11:39Romesh Ranganathan:that's not an invite an invite is like no untrue there was one time where I definitely did try and get you and Lisa and the kids bullshit bullshit he's full of shit no he's not lying I feel like his Sri Lankan mother now
11:56which is not I talk bullshit is it
11:59Romesh Ranganathan:do you talk bullshit yeah no I'm accusing him of talking bullshit like you do to me that's not fair of me why I know it's not fair but you keep doing it you never invited him I don't think you have invited him You were there the same time he was round. Yeah, because it's a party. Yeah, I invited him to a party. Where was the party? In your house. Okay. Yeah, but you've never invited me for like a dinner. No, family. Include me as well. Include me as well. How did this turn on me? Oh, that's right. It's this podcast. Remember, you can always leave. Oh God, let me clear my throat. Let me clear my throat.
12:33Romesh Ranganathan:Remember, you can always shoot us a text and leave us a cheeky voice. Voice not on 07731623355 or email podcast at rangaby.com. And that can be our second email. 14:06Romesh Ranganathan:Okay. So it's good. It'll make you look people so good. But they can use it for wrong reasons. I know. That's what it always means. Like they could put out you in a sex tape. Ah, there you are. I'm having a bang bang. So I don't like that. Okay. Okay. It's good for making lists. Yes. Of like stuff for Christmas or whatever. Of course. Of course. You didn't bring the Christmas pudding. It wasn't on our list. At least you're going to... Who the fuck takes a spare? Anyway, let's not... Are you worried? Look, my opinion on AI is this. We're fucked. And I, for one, accept the AI overlords. They're going to be doing stand-up and shit like that.
14:50Romesh Ranganathan:Are they? Yeah. They're going to be acting. Other thing I want to... By the way, what these guys do, piece of piss for AI. Yes, Shanti, we agree. Why are you going to get us... We think, we think. You could get AI to it in a heartbeat. No, mate, I think you're being a bit unfair.
15:19Oh, my God. Shut up, Rom.
15:23Romesh Ranganathan:Would you ever have an AI boyfriend? What is it? Why can't you see? What's the point? Imagine if it's... introduce something I can make use of it no but you could get like a you could have like an AI like you could have like a one of those dolls yeah with like a working I know you're getting a penis aren't you no I don't want to talk about that no okay it's a brainless kit yeah no but like then you can and then he can interact with you and then you can have jiggies with it no no no no thank you I'd rather go for the real thing okay so you'd never have an AI boyfriend no no But it would be like it would have whatever personality you want.
16:02No, thank you. No, no.

16:05Romesh Ranganathan:Oh, Shanti, you do it so good. Yeah. Oh, Shanti said that. Okay. Would you, in Hannah Fry's doc, she met these people that you can basically call your dead relatives. On the other end of the phone, it's AI. I like that. I like to call. Yeah. Okay. Why don't we do a call now? I'm dad. Okay. All right. And you be, well, why don't you be? Okay. I will give the list. What list? How many people he's done. No, no, no, no, okay. Will, just be hot on the edit on this one. There's so many of them there. All right, ready? Hello, Shanti. Yes, sir. Who are you? Who do you want? Maybe you need to set up who you'd want to call.
16:45Romesh Ranganathan:Yeah, who do you want to call? My dad. Your dad? Your husband. My husband. Fucking hell. Your dad and my husband. Okay, let's fix him now. Okay.
17:03Romesh Ranganathan:Okay. Okay. Hello, Shanti. Yes, I'm here. What do you want to know? I'm not calling you. I'm dead. You're dead? How come I can hear your fucking voice? This is the whole point of the... I believe from what I saw from the broadcast. Yeah. The whole point of this is to roleplay as if you're speaking to your dead husband. All right. Okay. What would you like to ask me? How many people you have fucked?
17:40it's a bit of a busy life I can't
17:48my candy
17:54holy shit
17:57Romesh Ranganathan:didn't happen on the documentary
18:01Romesh Ranganathan:that's all i want to ask that's not what you'd actually ask is it yeah i know the ladies everyone i know but how many you know everyone but how many i would count up all the ones that you know i have written a list have you written a list who helped you no i'm joking okay should we go to question two this is a voice note from sargent are you pronouncing it right my name's sargent and yes i am priyanka love listening to the show especially the thursday weekly episodes with sean the auntie you both have us in stitches all the time our question is if you were both stranded on a desert island which of you would last the longest and for both of you what three things would you take?
18:58Thank you, love the show, bye.
19:01Romesh Ranganathan:Thank you. Okay, so we're on a desert island mum. Yes I understood. Okay, do you want to answer first then? No, you said. No, no, no you understood so go for it.
19:18food food yeah food yeah how much food uh how long we are going to stand there we don't know
19:27Romesh Ranganathan:okay this is not we're not magicians if you're around the food learn to eat whatever it's available there okay coconut or something else yeah just crack it and drink it and eat it and fruit. Okay. If it is poison, not poison. If it's not poisonous, you'd eat the fruits. You smell it and see. You can't smell if something's poisonous or not. I don't know. I don't know. Give it. I'll let you eat first.
19:56Funny. I'm dead. Dead. I'm dead.
20:07How about that?
20:08Romesh Ranganathan:Yeah, nice. Sounds good, doesn't it? What will you do? The question from Sajid was, what three things would we take? What three things? Toilet tissue.
20:24Romesh Ranganathan:That is fucking mad. So how will you clean your eyes? You're on an island. Just go and wash yourself in the ocean. In case there's tortoises or... Yeah, tortoises, famously. Famously. Tortoises. Two things. You can find them in the ocean. Secondly, they love a filthy arsehole. In my village, one boy, he went to wash his ass. Where? In the river? In the river. And the tortoise, oh, crocodile, bit his thing. Well, what I would say is completely gone. It's true. How big was his fucking tortoise? And what was he doing in the water? So crocodile bit his things off. Yeah. There was a big story. They talk about it and laugh.
21:13Romesh Ranganathan:It happened to me, it would be a smaller story. So I don't think I like the idea of washing my bits in there. Mum, it's got to be stuff that you're able to take. So how many rolls of toilet tissue do you think you're going to need? As much as I can. And you are coming with me. I'm not bringing toilet tissue for you. I'm going to go risk it with the tortoise.
21:33Romesh Ranganathan:Okay, so that's one thing. Toilet tissue, fucking insane. We can carry both of us. Yeah, so pack lunch or whatever. Not pack lunch. You don't do pack lunch. Mangoes or... Mangoes. Suitcase full of mangoes. Something that might be there. Kidney beans. Yeah. How about some coconuts? You know what we should bring? Sand. Coconut weekend. Get it.
22:01Okay. Yeah.
22:02Romesh Ranganathan:I mean, if you're eating nothing but mangoes, I think you need more toilet roll. No, I don't think... So mangoes, toilet roll, and? And some... What else I can say? My makeup things. Okay. I would probably bring some sort of earmuffs or, you know, sort of covering. Yeah, because you're going with your mother. I know what you're getting at. You think I'm that daft? No, I'm not. How rude you are, son.
22:41Then, that's it. We are wasting the time. Take something.
22:46Romesh Ranganathan:I bring a Kindle. What are you going to do with the Kindle? Where will you get the connection? Well, I'd have the books pre-downloaded. It will work for a while. After that, what, do you breathe the air? I'd batter you to death with it. Yeah.
23:20Yeah, what's the other thing? Definitely toilet tissue.
23:23Romesh Ranganathan:No. No? That's most important. Keep yourself clean. No, I just wash in the ocean. Swim shorts. Are you prepared to lose your ding-dongs? To what? Tortoises. I don't know what film you've watched that makes you think there's these fucking dick-eating tortoises swimming in the ocean. They don't know what's hanging there. They might think it's food. Might think it's what? What do they think it is? Lettuce? And why have they gone in the fucking water? Turtles are in the water. How will you wash it yourself? You've got to scot down, isn't it? Yeah. So when it's caught down, it will hang. So they might think it's a fish.
24:05A tortoise.
24:07Romesh Ranganathan:A tortoise. A tortoise in the ocean will come and bite my dick off. Yeah, you never know. Or a crocodile. If a tortoise manages to make it to my dick. Yeah. Not your dick, your balls. Okay, fine. Rambutan. Your rambutan. If a tortoise manages to make it to my balls in the time that I'm taking to wash myself, I would say, well done mate you can have them What will you do for future use? I'm not planning on banging you
24:44Oh my god you stupid arsehole Oh my god
24:51Romesh Ranganathan:No, but I'm on an island with my mother as far as I'm concerned just chop it off put it on the grill Then you have to scot down wash it, get up in case something catches you Yeah, yeah, okay. Yeah? So you have to be careful when you wash your ass there. Yeah, okay. Yeah, okay. Thank you so much, Sadhu. Okay. That was... That was interesting. That was interesting, yeah. Okay, here's our next question. Hi, Ramesh, Shanthi and Faceless team. I would like to know which out of Quasimodo, Hunchback of Notre Dame, Shrek and Ursula, would you both snog, marry and avoid? I let you answer the question. Yeah, because you don't understand the question or any of the names.
25:32Yeah, that's true. I'm telling you the truth.
25:35Romesh Ranganathan:Your options are snog. You know what snog is? Yes. Marry. You know what marry is? And avoid, right? You've got to choose one for each of the three of those. So you've got the Hunchback of Notre Dame. Yeah. You've got Shrek. Yeah. You know what Shrek looks like. Yeah, yeah. And then Ursula, which I'm assuming is from Little Mermaid. Can we show mum a picture of Ursula? That's Ursula. This one? Yeah. Oh. So it's her, Shrek, and the Hunchback of Notre Dame. Snog, marry, avoid. It's normally shag, marry, avoid, isn't it? I think, yes, more PG. Okay, so what are we doing? Are we pre-Watershed now? It was a text.
26:12Romesh Ranganathan:I can't really... And they said snog? Yeah. I didn't censor them. Mum, snog, marry, and avoid. Which one would you snog? The last one. Ursula. Ursula, yeah, because you've got a mouth. Shrek's got a mouth. So is the Hunchback of Notre Dame. Shrek eats dirty things, isn't it? It will smell, so I don't want to go near there. Okay, so who would you marry? You're snogging Ursula. You can now marry and avoid Hunchback or Shrek. I'll marry Hunchback. You'll marry Hunchback, avoid Shrek. So Shrek's your least favourite? Yeah. Okay. I feel sorry for the Hunchback. That's right. Well, if you feel sorry for him, don't fucking marry him.
26:53Oh, God. Okay, I'd probably snog the hunchback, marry Ursula, avoid Shrek. But down below, there's nothing there.
27:04Romesh Ranganathan:Below where? You want to marry.
27:09What?
27:09Romesh Ranganathan:Below there's nothing where? Nothing, nothing, nothing. Below there's nothing where? In Ursula? Oh, yeah. Okay, but, you know, I like Ursula. I actually don't, you know, I think Ursula's quite attractive. Is she? Yeah. Okay, okay. I'm a fan. All right, that's fine then. Is that okay? That's fine. Perfect. And then I'll go under the water and hang out with her and I'll go, have you seen any of those dick-eating tortoises around here? Why don't they eat? Who? Tortoises. Mum, do you know what tortoise is? I'm starting to wonder. Tortoise, really slow creature with a shell. You have seen them banging about the noise they make.
27:49They are not quiet.
27:50Romesh Ranganathan:That's a snapping turtle you're talking about. That's a tortoise. That's going to eat my dick. Why not? In the ocean. Yeah. They are looking for food. That? That thing there? Yeah. Okay. You're mistaking tortoise for turtle. And even that mistake... Can we have a look at a snapping turtle, please? So we are in the island. You might... That little bitch. Ah, there you are. They will love to eat something soft. You snap your dick off like a stick of celery. That's it. There you are. Glug, glug. why why did you do that bit at the end
28:33Romesh Ranganathan:okay back to the questions we've got an anonymous question from whatsapp hi Ramesh and Shanthi love the show really enjoy your style of interviewing it never feels forced to like you're trying to trip up your guests I have a question my mum and I have been watching the winter olympics we were mildly traumatised watching the schemo sprints running uphill on skis up steps on skis again, then in a race downhill in less than five minutes. Safe to say, we decided this would be our event if we competed. To be clear, this is the universe where unicorns serve breakfast to taxi drivers. What would be your Olympic event?
29:03Romesh Ranganathan:I can imagine you'd make a great ice dancing duo. What a visual to leave you all with. What do you think, Mum? I can't answer this question. I didn't understand clearly. What winter Olympic event would be yours? What do you do? Bobsled? What's that? You know, cool runnings? running I like no we do bobsled I can't I haven't got the energy to explain every event to my mum so we do bobsled wouldn't we okay yeah okay thank you for your message
