0:00Romesh Ranganathan:Yo! What do you think of that as an intro?

0:02Shanthi Ranganathan:Nice.

0:03Romesh Ranganathan:Okay. Welcome back to the Thursday edition of the Romesh Ranganathan show. And I'm joined as always by someone who is fast becoming one of the biggest names in British entertainment. The timing's off because TV's dying. Shanthi, how are you?

0:18Shanthi Ranganathan:I'm fine. Thank you. How are you?

0:20Romesh Ranganathan:Really good. Lovely to see you.

0:21Shanthi Ranganathan:After so long, I'm seeing you.

0:23Romesh Ranganathan:Well, it was so long because you were ages in hair and makeup, weren't you?

0:26Shanthi Ranganathan:I didn't mean that way.

0:28Romesh Ranganathan:Okay. What way did you mean?

0:29Shanthi Ranganathan:You went to holiday? Yeah. You didn't come to see me?

0:32Romesh Ranganathan:On holiday? No, after when you come back. When you come back. Oh, yeah. When you come back. Yeah, well, I went straight to the league of the round.

0:38Shanthi Ranganathan:And you didn't have the instinct. Oh, my mother is alone. I better go and see her.

0:44Romesh Ranganathan:Right.

0:44Shanthi Ranganathan:Then you took off to Spain.

0:47Romesh Ranganathan:Mallorca.

0:49Shanthi Ranganathan:Whatever. Whatever.

0:51Romesh Ranganathan:Yeah. So what did you want me to do? You were not in England. Some people might not know who you are, Shanti. I don't think you actually said... Oh, she's my mum. Thanks. I mean, it's pretty clear from the dynamic, isn't it? Ashanti is also my mum.

1:05Shanthi Ranganathan:Why have you got a different mum?

1:07Romesh Ranganathan:No, I did for Tzu as a reluctant landlord, but not here, not in real life. But I didn't say that. I assumed that people would know who you are.

1:17Shanthi Ranganathan:Yeah, when I go out, of course, they do come and ask me, are you a romacious mum? Can I take a photograph with you?

1:24Romesh Ranganathan:Yeah.

1:25Shanthi Ranganathan:But I always take a photo.

1:27Romesh Ranganathan:Yeah.

1:28Shanthi Ranganathan:But Dine shouted at me. You don't even know those people. Why are you doing it?

1:33Romesh Ranganathan:Right.

1:34Shanthi Ranganathan:Yeah. So what do you think?

1:35Romesh Ranganathan:I think he might be a bit jealous. Dinesh is your brother.

1:40Shanthi Ranganathan:Dinesh is your younger brother. Just catching the audience up. Okay.

1:42Romesh Ranganathan:Dinesh is my brother. Yeah. Okay. My dad's dead. Are we all up to speed now?

1:50Romesh Ranganathan:I think that's a good recap. Okay, great. Wife? Wife? Pardon? Wife's very much alive. Yeah, okay. Don't know what she's up to at the moment.

1:57Shanthi Ranganathan:But no bang bang.

1:58Romesh Ranganathan:No bang bang.

2:01Shanthi Ranganathan:So what's the point having a wife?

2:03Romesh Ranganathan:What do you mean what's the point having a wife if you're not having sex? I didn't say I was not having sex. I'm not having sex as frequently as I used to, no.

2:11Shanthi Ranganathan:Because you have to think about your age as well, isn't it?

2:14Romesh Ranganathan:It's not to do with my age. You just get busy. I frequently...

2:17Shanthi Ranganathan:You have to have a day. Bang, bang day.

2:21Romesh Ranganathan:I don't think you do. Did you and dad used to have bang, bang days?

2:23Shanthi Ranganathan:How can I have a bang, bang? He's banging outside. So there's no time for bang, bang. We've not even introduced this episode. We've not done the intro of the episode.

2:32Romesh Ranganathan:We've got on to extramarital affairs.

2:34Shanthi Ranganathan:I'm honest. I'm telling you the truth.

2:36Romesh Ranganathan:Yeah.

2:36Shanthi Ranganathan:I don't think he had time to bang bang at home.

2:40Romesh Ranganathan:Right. Was there a time when you were regularly bang banging?

2:44Shanthi Ranganathan:At the beginning.

2:45Romesh Ranganathan:Right. At the beginning. How regularly is regularly?

2:49Shanthi Ranganathan:Every day.

2:50Romesh Ranganathan:Every day?

2:51Shanthi Ranganathan:Every day.

2:52Romesh Ranganathan:Every day you and dad were having sex.

2:54Shanthi Ranganathan:Yeah.

2:54Romesh Ranganathan:For how long? Not the period of, I don't want to know how long he lasted.

2:58Shanthi Ranganathan:But I mean, for what period of calendar time are we talking? Sometime daytime.

3:05Romesh Ranganathan:No, no, no, no, please do not. But for over what period of time?

3:12Shanthi Ranganathan:For five years?

3:13Romesh Ranganathan:Five years, you're having sex every day.

3:16Shanthi Ranganathan:I mean, my God, how can he have? He had to have a break, isn't he? Every two weeks only man has become active.

3:23Romesh Ranganathan:Every two weeks?

3:24Shanthi Ranganathan:Yeah.

3:25Romesh Ranganathan:Dad was lying there. Dad said he had a recovery of two weeks.

3:29Shanthi Ranganathan:not recovery yeah to perform well right you men need two weeks men don't need

3:36Romesh Ranganathan:two weeks to perform well do they

3:38Shanthi Ranganathan:yes they do do they just google it and see

3:42Romesh Ranganathan:can we google it now please do men need two weeks between sex to perform at their best I'm having to watch a live google now this is actually I was thinking to myself there's nothing I can think of that's worse than my parents having sex but it is it's watching Ben try and google this Sexually, with two weeks rest. Is this how you search for stuff online? A two-week sexual rest isn't necessarily better for sexual performance, as regular sexual activity may prevent erectile dysfunction. But excessive sexual abstinence has been linked together with high semen concentration. Am I right or wrong? Yeah, okay.

4:24Romesh Ranganathan:I understand that if your main criteria is I hope this is concentrated. But I'm talking about just in terms of actually like, you don't need two weeks. I don't think. Hey, it's Christy from Lululemon and I'm here at the office checking out the Shake It Out shorts. These have been my go-tos and I kind of think of them as a middle ground between a true run short and a more playful athletic sporty short. They have all the performance you want for running. So a comfy liner, our lightweight swift fabric, even a pocket for your keys. But what I really like is the flowy fit and layered hem. It gives it a little bit of volume, a little bit of fun, so they feel as good on a run as they do just at coffee afterwards.

5:03Romesh Ranganathan:You can find the Shake It Out shorts in-store now or online at lululemon.com. Do you want to finish the intro? Yeah, sure. My mum's always on at me to catch up, so I thought we'd do it properly, record the whole thing, stick it out as a podcast, and hopefully make enough money to keep her in the lifestyle she's become a little bit too comfortable with. Basically, I'm trying to monetize our relationship.

5:22Shanthi Ranganathan:Okay.

5:22Romesh Ranganathan:Do you know what I mean? This is a nice way for us to catch up, but also we're getting paid. It's exciting, isn't it?

5:31Shanthi Ranganathan:Spending time with you. I don't think about money.

5:33Romesh Ranganathan:No, but I'm saying...

5:34Shanthi Ranganathan:If I'm short of money, I will ask you.

5:36Romesh Ranganathan:I know that. Yeah.

5:37Shanthi Ranganathan:There you are.

5:38Romesh Ranganathan:I'm fully aware of that. The point I'm trying to make is we are doing something that we would have done anyway, arguably not with the mics and with Ben.

5:45Shanthi Ranganathan:Yeah.

5:46Romesh Ranganathan:But it's monetarily beneficial. Of course. So it's exciting, isn't it? Of course.

5:50Shanthi Ranganathan:It is exciting.

5:51Romesh Ranganathan:So do you want to give like an idea of what can the audience expect? Well, it's us catching up. I will catch you up with how the episode without you went because obviously you're not allowed in the room with a lot of these people interviewing for legal reasons and then also we're going to be taking questions from viewers and listeners oh so that's exciting isn't it it's interesting yeah you never

6:14Shanthi Ranganathan:explained properly now I know you didn't know I did we spoke for like you did Ben did Ben did yeah

6:20Romesh Ranganathan:so it doesn't have to come from me does it you recognise what Ben said I mean, you love Ben, don't you?

6:27Shanthi Ranganathan:Of course I do. Why are you asking that question?

6:29Romesh Ranganathan:No, but you do though, don't you? Because he needs all the validation he can get. So if that sounds remotely... I'm going back to my official kind of hosting capacity now.

6:37Shanthi Ranganathan:Yeah.

6:38Romesh Ranganathan:So if that sounds remotely entertaining to you, you're in the right place. Welcome to the Thursday episode. Mum, sing the jingle.

6:45Shanthi Ranganathan:Sing a jingle?

6:46Romesh Ranganathan:Yeah. So it's called the Ramesh Ranganathan Show. Just freestyle it now.

6:49Shanthi Ranganathan:What do I do?

6:50Romesh Ranganathan:Whatever you want. Like whatever you think the tune would be.

6:53Shanthi Ranganathan:Do you want me to sing?

6:54Romesh Ranganathan:Yeah.

6:55Shanthi Ranganathan:No, I can't.

6:56Romesh Ranganathan:Go on, go for it. No. Just like, or do a rap or something. For example. For example. Yo, it's the Ramesh Rangan Nathan Show. We're available where you get your podcasts. Shut up. Shut up. Thursday episode. Yeah. No, I'm not singing.

7:10Shanthi Ranganathan:No, no.

7:12Romesh Ranganathan:All right. Should we cut to the titles? I would love you to cut what I've just done out. I assumed I would do that. Then mum would like, then that's why I put myself out. Do you want one more go at it? Yeah, go on, Mum.

7:29Shanthi Ranganathan:Buzz, you want me to sing?

7:30Romesh Ranganathan:Yeah, just a jingle. Or just do it like a spoken word one, if you want.

7:33Shanthi Ranganathan:Oh, I can't sing that right away.

7:36Romesh Ranganathan:Just do it. It can be spoken, but in a little single. You know, like, Here's the Rangani Tansho. With me, Shanti. Thursday episode. You know?

7:46Shanthi Ranganathan:This is Rangani Tansho. She's cut you out of it, hasn't she? Yeah, that's weird. It's now the Rangani Tansho. Go on, go on. Do it again, do it again.

7:54Romesh Ranganathan:Go on.

7:54Shanthi Ranganathan:It's Ranganathan Show.

7:57Romesh Ranganathan:Thursday episode?

7:58Shanthi Ranganathan:Thursday episode.

8:00Romesh Ranganathan:With me, Shanti.

8:01Shanthi Ranganathan:With me, Shanti. Okay, great. Roll the clip.

8:11It's the Romesh Rangan Nathan Show.

8:16Shanthi Ranganathan:With me, Shanti.

8:19Romesh Ranganathan:So, on Monday's episode, Mum, we had Michael Sheen.

8:23Shanthi Ranganathan:Michael Sheen. I can't picture him. Why are you doing it?

8:27Romesh Ranganathan:No, it's just that we've interviewed him and you asked him a question and now you can't call him to your mind's eye. That's the issue. It's just a bit embarrassing. If he goes, I can't imagine he will do, but if he went, oh, let me just see what Ramish's, you know, what Shanti's reaction was to the episode. Then cut it off.

8:47Shanthi Ranganathan:Then I'll start again.

8:48Romesh Ranganathan:Okay, let's try it as if you know who he is, all right?

8:50Shanthi Ranganathan:Only one time.

8:51Romesh Ranganathan:Why don't we play you the clip of the question? Yeah, let's play the clip.

8:55Shanthi Ranganathan:Hi, Michael. Hello. I'm Romesh's mum. I love you in that movie where you interviewed the president. Do you have any tips for Romesh to improve his interview?

9:10Romesh Ranganathan:Would you please let me know? I'll be grateful. Mum, so that was a lie, wasn't it? You really loved the film where he interviewed the president.

9:18Shanthi Ranganathan:That was a lie.

9:31Romesh Ranganathan:Mum, we've asked listeners and viewers to send in some questions. Yes. And we're going to address them together. Are you willing to do that?

9:38Shanthi Ranganathan:I would. Okay, great.

9:39Romesh Ranganathan:So you just give any advice you want to give to people? Just to be clear, this is the thing that I think misses in your briefings. It's for public domain.

9:48Shanthi Ranganathan:Yeah.

9:48Romesh Ranganathan:so other people will watch and hear this

9:51Shanthi Ranganathan:alright yeah sure

9:52Romesh Ranganathan:so what I would say is I think it's gone well so far a lot of what we've said so far is what we call in the industry unusable so just bear that in mind when we're answering these ok alright let's go do you want me to read one or do you want one that's like a voice note is it like a voice note it's almost exactly like one why don't you read one first read one I think I said read did I say weed

10:18Shanthi Ranganathan:No, read one.

10:19Romesh Ranganathan:Okay, right. One all. What's the matter? The brown man's not speaking English for you to your satisfaction. Anyway, would you... Voice note? Read one. No, read one. Read one. Weed one, as you implied, I said. Okay, when I was seven, I dressed up as a vampire for Halloween. I burst into the living room, ran right up to my mum, and proudly shouted, I want to suck your butt. I meant to say blood. My whole family has told that story every Christmas, birthday, and wedding since. So what I want to know is, what's the one childhood mistake your family still won't let you forget? I don't know. Did I make any mistakes as a child?

10:56Shanthi Ranganathan:Yeah, when we went to Canada.

10:58Romesh Ranganathan:First of all, I was 22.

11:02Romesh Ranganathan:I know what you're talking about. So basically...

11:07Shanthi Ranganathan:It still haunts me, though. It still haunts you? Yeah.

11:11Romesh Ranganathan:Guys, Will, John and Ben, I'd love to get your take on this, right? Because this is much like... We don't know who this person is. But much like this, this story is brought out as an example of me being horrible.

11:23Shanthi Ranganathan:Respecting your mother. Yeah.

11:25Romesh Ranganathan:So what happened was, was Dad already in Canada at this point?

11:28Shanthi Ranganathan:Yeah.

11:28Romesh Ranganathan:Dad was visiting his brothers in Canada. First time we are going to. First time we're going to meet a lot of our cousins, a lot of my cousins. Yeah. So the next day, Mum and I are flying out to Toronto to visit our family. The night before we're due to fly out, I'm living with Mum and Dad at this point. The night before we do to fly out, I go out to the pub and I get drunk, right? And then I come back about, I don't know, midnight, and I haven't packed. And mum is furious that I haven't packed yet. And she says something along the lines of, do you remember what you said to me? Something about packing, you've got to pack or something.

12:04Romesh Ranganathan:I can't believe you're not packed. It starts shouting at me, you've got to pack. And then I go, oh, my God, like, can you just give it a rest or something along those lines? And then this is the bit that mum keeps quoting. mum then said God will punish you for talking to your mother like that and I said he already has I've got to get a flight with you right no that's not cool

12:29Shanthi Ranganathan:that's not cool at all no yeah why why do you talk to me like that

12:34Romesh Ranganathan:in my defence I was drunk

12:36Shanthi Ranganathan:I feel like you've said in my defence

12:40Romesh Ranganathan:so I wasn't fully like do you know what I mean you've said worse than that since then and why is that one stuck why does that stick because it's i think there's a religious element i got it do you know what i mean and also i think mama's a bit you're a bit nervous about

12:52Shanthi Ranganathan:going to toronto weren't you meeting all these yeah meeting all these dad's family made it sound

12:59Romesh Ranganathan:like we're going to meet a group of nonces in canada we actually we actually have a canada um question oh let's is it a voice note yeah okay let's hear it um hold on Do you want to clear your throat before you talk to the mic? Fucking Marge Simpson over here.

13:21Shanthi Ranganathan:Hey, it's Scott from Canada. I remember when you went to Canada on your show and you went on Naked News. Any plans for Naked episodes of the podcast?

13:32Romesh Ranganathan:That's not a real question. That's a real question. And that's a real person. But it does sound AI. Yeah, it does. It does sound AI. Yeah, I actually... It's the sort of voice note that you would have created. That sort of... No. Because it throws back to a show that you were involved in. But it's one of your best shows, so I guess people just, it's in their memory. Do you know what Scott's talking about? First of all, thank you, Scott. Do you want to say thank you, Scott, down there? Thank you, Scott. That's Will and that's John. Neither of these people. You want the impression that one of these guys is called Scott?

14:04Shanthi Ranganathan:Sorry, John.

14:07Romesh Ranganathan:Scott is the person that did the voice note. Did he? He just said, I'm Scott from Canada. You heard it right now, right?

14:14Shanthi Ranganathan:You said it's AI.

14:15Romesh Ranganathan:No, it's not AI. We said it sounds like AI.

14:19Shanthi Ranganathan:Sounds like AI, but you did it.

14:21Romesh Ranganathan:He didn't do it. No, it's Scott from Canada.

14:24Shanthi Ranganathan:So who put the accent in?

14:26Romesh Ranganathan:Scott, it's not an accent. That's how we talk. Where it's from.

14:29Shanthi Ranganathan:From Canada. Yeah.

14:31Romesh Ranganathan:So do you know about this story? Do you know what Scott's referring to?

14:34Shanthi Ranganathan:No.

14:35Romesh Ranganathan:So in Asian Provocateur Series 2, Yeah. I went on Naked News in Canada. you know they have a thing called naked news where all the presenters are naked and then in order to be a guest on the show i went naked as well did you yeah with the big someone did you never watch the show you were in half that series no i didn't watch that are you are you joking did you not watch it so i was sat on the sofa naked no i i can't remember Oh, yeah, Will's found an image, or Scott, as you call him. Oh, no, it's... Oh, there you go.

15:14Shanthi Ranganathan:I can't remember that. Oh, no, no, no, I do, I do, I do. Yeah.

15:18Romesh Ranganathan:I do. What particular bit of that image suddenly jogged your memory?

15:25Your bit...

15:26Shanthi Ranganathan:Holding a bit like that with your hand.

15:29Romesh Ranganathan:So would you ever consider... No. ...going naked on the podcast? What if Ben said he'd buy you a nice watch?

15:36Shanthi Ranganathan:I might think, yeah.

15:37Romesh Ranganathan:Okay, so how much would the watch have to cost for you to be naked? 9 ,000. 9 ,000. That's really specific. Yeah. Which watch have you got your eye on?

15:44Shanthi Ranganathan:You can guess.

15:46Romesh Ranganathan:Rolex.

15:46Shanthi Ranganathan:Yeah.

15:47Romesh Ranganathan:So, Ben, will you buy mum a Rolex and she'll get her bits out?

15:51Shanthi Ranganathan:Pardon? Are you going to broadcast this?

15:54Romesh Ranganathan:Broadcast what? We don't have to. We could do it in our... Broadcast what? Shut up. Sorry, what's... Are you saying you do it if it wasn't film, though? If I just wanted to see it?

16:08Romesh Ranganathan:Is any of this usable? So Ben, I said to you, how much money would it cost for Ben for you to do this podcast naked? That's what the conversation was.

16:20Shanthi Ranganathan:Yeah, it was.

16:21Romesh Ranganathan:Right. And then, so I said, and then you seemed to get offended, but none of the information had changed. I'm not offended.

16:26Shanthi Ranganathan:No, if I'm getting a watch, why not?

16:29Romesh Ranganathan:So you would get naked on the podcast? Of course. Would it go on YouTube?

16:33Shanthi Ranganathan:Yeah.

16:33Romesh Ranganathan:Yeah, no, I wouldn't, no. For two watches? Front of mum? No. Oh, is it the front of your mum? I think that has a part to play. You're sort of saying it like that makes me a weirdo. Oh, you're a bit prudish because you don't want to get naked in front of your mum. But you've been naked in front of her probably millions of times. Millions? Haven't you? Millions? Do you think it's millions? Do you think it's millions? Rough estimate of how many times your mum's seen you naked is millions. I don't know. When you think about... What are you doing? Are you putting on a show? Are you leaving the room and going back in?

17:15Romesh Ranganathan:Ta-da! Ta-da! Over and over again. It's still going to be millions, is it? Is my maths off here? There's absolutely no way it's going to be millions.

17:24Shanthi Ranganathan:Every time she changed a nappy. Ah, that's what... That's what I was thinking. Yeah.

17:30Romesh Ranganathan:How much were you shitting as a child? every time you take a nappy did you not like play naked in paddling pools and stuff like that that counts as one I don't know yeah millions did you and your brother like were you naked together a lot

17:47Shanthi Ranganathan:I give them a bath both of them are naked but I don't know when they stop when we stop bathing naked once both of them came to me and said to me you should stop buying clothes

18:00Romesh Ranganathan:you should stop buying clothes for us

18:03Shanthi Ranganathan:the reason our style is different give us the money we'll buy

18:07Romesh Ranganathan:okay we didn't say first of all we didn't say the words our style is different what was your style? that was the time when I was like wearing bandanas and stuff can we put a clip up Will of that? we've got a picture of that I've got that picture oh great thanks for confirming Will Rom are there any stories that you and Din will always tell about your mum?

18:31Shanthi Ranganathan:They do discuss about me a lot. They hide it, but I know they... Hide what?

18:37Romesh Ranganathan:What do you mean, hide it? You've started doing Instagrams with Dinesh, haven't you? I'm not. You were on Instagram more than one occasion with Din, weren't you?

18:45Shanthi Ranganathan:Yes, we recorded something. Yeah, that's what I meant. I thought you'd call it real, not Instagram.

18:51Romesh Ranganathan:It is a real, yeah. You're right. Bloody hell. You're actually using better... Well done. Yeah. Do you remember when you You kicked me in the nose And I started bleeding everywhere

19:03Shanthi Ranganathan:I never kicked Did I?

19:04Romesh Ranganathan:Yeah it was an accident Alright But I crept up at the end of the bed And I tickled your foot And you went get off And then you smashed me straight in the face

19:14Shanthi Ranganathan:Do you remember that? Why were you creeping in

19:16Romesh Ranganathan:Tickling people's feet? Because basically Mum was like having a nap But her feet were like Stuck out the bottom of the blanket And then I just thought It would be funny to go and tickle her feet and she smashed me in the nose.

19:27Shanthi Ranganathan:Dad was, you hidden yourself inside the box.

19:31Romesh Ranganathan:This isn't a story about mum, but mum and dad had a box of like, I think it was like old books, but they'd emptied the box, but the box was still in the room. They hadn't got rid of it. And so then I hid in the box and I closed it in just before bedtime. So you knew, I said to mum, I'm just going to hide in this box. And then dad came in and then I just popped out the box. and he nearly had a heart attack. Like it was like a really bad episode.

19:57Shanthi Ranganathan:Sweating it. Yeah. Yeah.

19:59Romesh Ranganathan:He had to like sit down. It was like really bad. Anyway, it went on to die of a heart attack. I'm not saying that was the start of it, but I can't imagine it helped.

20:06Shanthi Ranganathan:He did have a heart attack.

20:09Romesh Ranganathan:Yeah. The doctor popped out of a box. Such a wild decision. But listen, that's the NHS. I don't want to get political.

20:18Shanthi Ranganathan:Okay. Anything else you want to add?

20:20Romesh Ranganathan:Yes. Mum, Every week, you always want to catch up on something. So we've got a topic for you to tell, or something you want to catch up with me about, or an issue you might have had, or something you'd like to raise with me. We would love to share that on the podcast today. Definitely.

20:37Shanthi Ranganathan:I have plenty to tell you. Okay, but what is it you'd like to... For example, what's happened recently? Yes, sure. Yeah. I text you and said your son's birthday coming. And...

20:50Romesh Ranganathan:This isn't what I was told when we were going to discuss, but okay. Go on.

20:54Shanthi Ranganathan:You said, I'll speak to Lisa, mum, and I'll come back to you.

20:59Romesh Ranganathan:Yeah. This Sunday or whatever day. As in Sunday, just gone.

21:04Shanthi Ranganathan:Just gone. I sat there and waiting for your text. What do you think I'm doing at home?

21:10Romesh Ranganathan:How do you wait for a text, mum? You're not waiting for a delivery. Because I don't want to go out. You can go and do other things.

21:16Shanthi Ranganathan:Oh, I start cooking.

21:17Romesh Ranganathan:So what do you do? Let me show you. Is this how you wait for a text?

21:22Shanthi Ranganathan:Yeah, maybe. From you.

21:24Romesh Ranganathan:Please, no text. You can get on with your life, can't you?

21:28Shanthi Ranganathan:As much as I love to see my grandson and bless him, and you fuck up everything.

21:34Romesh Ranganathan:How do I fuck up everything?

21:35Shanthi Ranganathan:You do, Romain.

21:36Romesh Ranganathan:Don't laugh at stuff like that. I don't mind a little bit of humour, but that's just abuse, isn't it?

21:41Shanthi Ranganathan:You act like a prime minister. Soon as they get the power.

21:46Romesh Ranganathan:What power?

21:47Shanthi Ranganathan:Oh, I mean for election, they go around. So who's being elected here? I'm just, for example, I'm saying you are like a prime minister.

21:55Romesh Ranganathan:How am I like a prime minister?

21:56Shanthi Ranganathan:Yeah.

21:57Romesh Ranganathan:In what way?

21:57Shanthi Ranganathan:You lie a lot. When did I lie? You do, Rame.

22:00Romesh Ranganathan:When did I lie? Tell me in this conversation, when have I lied?

22:03Shanthi Ranganathan:I'm talking about all these weeks.

22:06Romesh Ranganathan:Yeah.

22:06Shanthi Ranganathan:I haven't seen you.

22:08Romesh Ranganathan:Well, are you talking about over the last, what, five weeks?

22:12Shanthi Ranganathan:Yeah.

22:12Romesh Ranganathan:Okay, so two weeks of that I was in Florida.

22:15Shanthi Ranganathan:Yeah.

22:15Romesh Ranganathan:One week of that I was in Mallorca.

22:17Shanthi Ranganathan:Yeah.

22:17Romesh Ranganathan:Two weeks of that I was in Manchester.

22:19Shanthi Ranganathan:Yeah. Your wife is home. She crap called me.

22:22Romesh Ranganathan:To say what?

22:23Shanthi Ranganathan:To say...

22:23Romesh Ranganathan:Rom's not here.

22:25Shanthi Ranganathan:If you are not there, why can't I go there?

22:27Romesh Ranganathan:You can do. You can communicate directly.

22:30Shanthi Ranganathan:I don't communicate with her.

22:31Romesh Ranganathan:Well, that's on you, isn't it?

22:33Shanthi Ranganathan:No. Why do you blame me?

22:35Romesh Ranganathan:Because you're not communicating with her. Hold on, Ben. This is sorting out. I just thought it was going to be more like... Right.

22:40Shanthi Ranganathan:I'm texting Lisa. Yeah. Hi, Lisa. I would love to come and give her... Welcome to the Thursday edition.

22:47Romesh Ranganathan:Yeah, you're texting her. Go on. We need to sort this out. It's going to be like light-hearted, sort of like topical. Okay, yeah. Topical? Sorry, Shanti.

22:54Shanthi Ranganathan:I can't complain to you.

22:56Romesh Ranganathan:You can, you do.

22:57Shanthi Ranganathan:What did you do about that? Nothing.

22:59Romesh Ranganathan:What do I do? What do you want me to do?

23:01Shanthi Ranganathan:Hello, Lisa. Did mum text you? Did you reply?

23:04Romesh Ranganathan:I did say that.

23:05Shanthi Ranganathan:No, you didn't.

23:06Romesh Ranganathan:I did.

23:07Shanthi Ranganathan:I don't think you would have, man. Oh, let it go. She's an old bitch.

23:11Romesh Ranganathan:Pardon? Let it go. She's an old bitch. Maybe we'll do TikTok trends or something. Ben, this needs sorting out.

23:16Shanthi Ranganathan:I would never. You never sort anything out, Rami.

23:20Romesh Ranganathan:All right. Let's hope the next item is Ramesh gets some self-esteem because that's all been burnt off. Santander have given us a question. Oh, great. So this part of the show is called Questions on the Edge, brought to you by Santander for reasons beyond my understanding. They think mum would be a good brand ambassador for Santander. It's exciting, isn't it?

23:41Shanthi Ranganathan:Yes, I like that.

23:42Romesh Ranganathan:Yeah. You like Santander, don't you? I do.

23:44Shanthi Ranganathan:I have got a account there.

23:46Romesh Ranganathan:Yeah, there you go. You actually use them, don't you?

23:49Shanthi Ranganathan:Pardon?

23:49Romesh Ranganathan:Why is that offensive? I do use it all day. You're a fan of Santander. You've been with them for years, haven't you?

23:55Shanthi Ranganathan:Yeah, they're very helpful.

23:57Romesh Ranganathan:Yeah, there you go. I do as well. Pardon?

24:00Shanthi Ranganathan:I do as well. No, Ben does not.

24:01Romesh Ranganathan:Oh, Ben does as well.

24:03Shanthi Ranganathan:Of course. Yeah, why not? Yeah.

24:06Romesh Ranganathan:So anyway, they think it'd be a good...

24:16Shanthi Ranganathan:We already had it.

24:17Romesh Ranganathan:Yeah.

24:21Romesh Ranganathan:So anyway, mom, they think you'd be a good brand ambassador. Okay. Because you do and Ben does. Will, John? I actually do as well. Okay, John does. Will does. There you go. You should have shared it.

24:32Shanthi Ranganathan:Yeah, I did.

24:32Romesh Ranganathan:I just thought we had enough here without everyone jumping in. So they've tasked me with the job of asking a question relating to one of the benefits of the Santander Edge credit card. Now, this week's question is about rewards because the Santander Edge credit card helps you get a little bit back from your everyday spending, get a little bit back. So, Mum, what's been the most rewarding moment in your life? Join with you in your shows for the first time because of Ben, 2015. Not because of Ben.

25:03Shanthi Ranganathan:Of course. He's the one who taught me everything.

25:07Romesh Ranganathan:What do you mean taught you everything?

25:09Shanthi Ranganathan:He did. How to act. How to say things. How to act? Yeah.

25:12Romesh Ranganathan:You think that's acting, what we're doing?

25:14Shanthi Ranganathan:It's not bloody acting there.

25:15Romesh Ranganathan:Yeah. That's what I'm asking.

25:18Shanthi Ranganathan:How to say things. Right. Pronunciation. Pronunciation. So Ben would say, Shanti, you're not saying that properly. Listen. Listen.

25:25Romesh Ranganathan:Let me teach you how to speak English properly. That's what Ben would say. Because I didn't know this. So Ben would say, Shanti, that's not how you speak.

25:32Shanthi Ranganathan:No, he never been ruled to me like that.

25:35Romesh Ranganathan:No.

25:36Shanthi Ranganathan:And we climbed Sigiriya.

25:39Romesh Ranganathan:Sigiriya in Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka.

25:41Shanthi Ranganathan:You left me there and I wasn't wearing proper shoes. Shoes like this. I had to hold Ben to come down.

25:50Romesh Ranganathan:I mean, arguably I should probably have told you what shoot we were going to do. Yeah, I mean, Ben was in charge of that shoot. And we were completely ill-equipped for it. and I'd love to tell you he'd learnt from it but I'll give you a little spoiler from Can't Knock the Hustle coming out 24th of September Skymax yes Skymax 9pm and available on the thing and also Ben Banks at Santander he wants everyone to know apparently so we went to the top of a hill for that and I had to take off my trainers for reasons that become clear in the show and then ben provided for me some completely frictionless slippers that they bought in the market yeah in india yeah right yeah 30 seconds after putting them on i fell onto my back right and then the crew gathered around me to go you're right ben said could you do that again over here

26:53Romesh Ranganathan:we didn't need to George actually got it on a GoPro so we've actually got the full but mum what you're talking about it's in the pre-titles mum it's not a that's not a specific moment do you ever thought of a specific moment like one moment where you thought this is wonderful

27:14Romesh Ranganathan:because you know you've got two children you've got five grandchildren children yeah you've been married you know and when I asked you what your most rewarding moment in your life was you said when we got on telly yeah that made me happy because I can spend more

27:34Shanthi Ranganathan:time because you disappear forever isn't it that's why okay okay mom I would love you because I think

27:40Romesh Ranganathan:that went great by the way and I imagine we're probably going to get a little email from Santander going can we up the money based on what's just happened but i want you to can you just deliver this advert line it's a bit advertising so i want you to like so you're going to do it down this camera yeah okay and you do it like like you're really enthusiastic you bank with santander obviously yeah and then you so all i need to say is pay smarter with a santander edge credit card just down the barrel of that camera so pay smarter pay smarter with a santander edge credit card Okay, and give it as much full beans.

28:19Romesh Ranganathan:Really, give it some full welly. Go on.

28:50Romesh Ranganathan:All the beans you've got.

28:52Shanthi Ranganathan:Okay. Pay smarter. No, I laughed.

29:17Romesh Ranganathan:Stand and dare Sounds like an instruction The bank is called Santander
