1:31Romesh Ranganathan:Someone just sort of sat in a train station started masturbating furiously

1:35Paloma Faith:People always come up to me and say to me now Oh my god, you're an icon And even though that's quite nice it also sort of implies that I've had my day

1:45Romesh Ranganathan:To the end of the road Can you hear, he's doing this? Can I say, fucking horrible feedback from you

1:56Paloma Faith:Hi, I'm Paloma Faith and no doubt I'm going to end my entire career by being on the Romesh Rangelathan Show I can't say your name, can I?

2:06Romesh Ranganathan:I don't think we can use that

2:18Romesh Ranganathan:Oh, shut up, Romesh Please make some noise for Paloma Faith, everybody The Climam Fave is on the podcast. Can't believe it. Can't believe it. Now, before you came in, first of all, thank you for turning up. But you are pissed off for me, aren't you?

2:33Paloma Faith:Well, you know, I recently had a birthday party, didn't I, Romesh? And we're newly, we're new friends. I mean, kind of like we've known each other acquaintances for a while, but as we've grown older and more jaded, we've realised...

2:49Romesh Ranganathan:And we sort of accepted that, you know, I think initially your heights for celeb friends would be like sky high. Yeah. Well, as you've got older, you've lowered you.

2:58Paloma Faith:Yeah, but as you've

2:59Romesh Ranganathan:got older, you've sort of lowered. So that's why I've got an invite quite late on in the game.

3:04Paloma Faith:I'm quite down to earth now. Yeah, you are, yeah. So, yeah. So I invited three famous people to my birthday party and those three people were the only people who didn't show up. Everyone normal, friends from school, friends I've been friends with for years, people I've met in, you know, the psych ward, etc. All of them showed up. Except for the three famous people of which you were one of them.

3:35Romesh Ranganathan:I fucked up.

3:36Paloma Faith:Who said, I don't mind people not showing up. I'm not that proud. But when they say they're going to do something and then don't, it just reminds me of my father, Romesh.

3:44Romesh Ranganathan:Yeah.

3:45Paloma Faith:He was always saying he was going to come to the school and play and not being there.

3:50Romesh Ranganathan:I know. I didn't. I got the dates messed up. I was in Glasgow. I'm really sorry. Don't you feel like that's a sort of good introduction to being friends with you, though? How do you mean?

3:59Paloma Faith:Flaky.

4:00Romesh Ranganathan:Rom, I mean, I don't think it's a new thing. You're looking at me like you're annoyed. I'm looking at you because you're talking. Okay, you look annoyed. I normally look at people who are speaking. Go, go, go. What do you want to say? What's wrong? No, you're just bringing quite an energy. No, I'm sorry. Start talking again. Okay. just chill

4:21Paloma Faith:what a nice guy what's your point

4:24Romesh Ranganathan:he's quite I mean we've been friends for what 10 years colleagues

4:28Paloma Faith:how many times has he shown up when he said he was going to do is it 50-50 my wedding he didn't come

4:34Romesh Ranganathan:he did come that was the time and you had a go at me for how I was dressed yeah why what did you do tracking these well I didn't have a tie and apparently that made me scum on the earth he was the only person that didn't have a tie

4:44Paloma Faith:but everyone what you want everyone to dress as a bank manager there you go

4:47Romesh Ranganathan:thank you yes my G fuck you it felt like we were it's all switched no I'm really sorry man because I do I actually do really really like you

4:59Paloma Faith:I really genuinely like you

5:01Romesh Ranganathan:genuinely I do

5:02Paloma Faith:as well but what I like is I think it's good you didn't come

5:06Romesh Ranganathan:because I feel like

5:07Paloma Faith:I feel like the only reason why you like me is because it's from a distance but actually if we spent quite a lot of time together you'd find me quite irritating I don't think so

5:17Romesh Ranganathan:genuinely.

5:18Paloma Faith:Because I am one of those people that can be a bit marmite.

5:21Romesh Ranganathan:No, I think you're lovely. I'm quite intense. I think you're lovely.

5:24Paloma Faith:Thank you. Well, I feel the same and I really, really care about you liking me.

5:28Romesh Ranganathan:Oh, well I do really like you. But the truth is, I've genuinely, I can't imagine this to happen to you. I've been told by people, like say for example, a friend of mine, like, goes out with some mates and goes wrong, did you want to come along to this? I've been told I'm disappointing in person?

5:46Paloma Faith:Well, in real life? I don't think so.

5:48Romesh Ranganathan:Great, thank you.

5:49Paloma Faith:I agree with the man on the street that approached your wife and said it was amazing to wake up with you every morning.

5:55Romesh Ranganathan:Yeah. It's just like,

5:56Paloma Faith:it must be wicked. Yeah.

5:58Romesh Ranganathan:But at least I didn't agree. Yeah, I know. Yeah.

6:01Paloma Faith:But I think she does secretly. I don't think she does. Wouldn't she have got rid of you ages ago?

6:07Romesh Ranganathan:No, because you settle, you're trapped by three children, you just go, let's just see it.

6:10Paloma Faith:That never stopped me.

6:11Romesh Ranganathan:No, that's true, but you're a bit more of a maverick, aren't you? can we can we list do you want to talk

6:19Paloma Faith:about my t-shirt

6:20Romesh Ranganathan:well I'm going to talk about your t-shirt in a moment but I just want to talk about your achievements four platinum albums five Brit nominations starring cameo in Dark Knight Rises hit TV shows at The Voice you have over a billion global streams

6:33Paloma Faith:that's quite good

6:34Romesh Ranganathan:it's good is there anything I've missed I don't know do you consider yourself to be hugely successful

6:39Paloma Faith:no I'd say I always describe myself as averagely successful and ticking along nicely.

6:45Romesh Ranganathan:You can't think that.

6:46Paloma Faith:Why not? You can't think that. Why do people underestimate second best? Like first best, yeah, it's great. But second best is pretty good if you're looking at it from the global platform. Yeah. You know, the second, I always introduce people to my hairstylist as the second best hairstylist in the world. Yeah. People think it's slightly underhanded, but I think it's really complimentary.

7:11Romesh Ranganathan:Yeah. So you think you're second best?

7:13Paloma Faith:No, not second best. Okay. way down

7:15Romesh Ranganathan:right

7:15Paloma Faith:average

7:16Romesh Ranganathan:but you're happy with your lot yes

7:18Paloma Faith:I think that if I I think what I've done suits me as a person I think I'd hate to be a dare I'd hate to like go to the supermarket and people be constantly not leaving me alone I get such bad anxiety

7:33Romesh Ranganathan:do people how much do people approach you

7:36Paloma Faith:people just go hello to me and I like that because it suits me alright yeah yeah because it means they think I'm approachable but they wouldn't like the ship sailed where it's like can I get a picture or just doing it without

7:51Romesh Ranganathan:people don't ask you for pictures now I don't believe that

7:53Paloma Faith:they do but they are empathetic towards my response which is if I'm at work I do it if I'm with my kids I don't because I don't want my kids to like see their mum as a famous person

8:06Romesh Ranganathan:can I just so if I came up to you not me but like just imagine

8:10Paloma Faith:I'd say yes to you because you're an ethnic minority

8:17Romesh Ranganathan:would you really is that true is that true

8:22Paloma Faith:i'm just so paranoid that i don't seem racist

8:29Romesh Ranganathan:so i overcompensate right okay of course of course should we do a video

8:36Paloma Faith:and i love your skin tone and by the way can i just say i consider you to be as british as i in fact come to my house we're having a roast on Sunday I actually prefer it to roast dinner bring a dish from your culture and I'll mix

8:56Romesh Ranganathan:I like the smell I like it

9:00Paloma Faith:I think it's different

9:02Romesh Ranganathan:in a good way aren't you exotic

9:08Paloma Faith:I would never say that no you wouldn't

9:11Romesh Ranganathan:Okay, question. We couldn't figure this out. Have you thought about becoming vegan or have you been vegan for any amount of time?

9:19Paloma Faith:I have been vegan for a very short amount of time. How long were you vegan for? Maybe six months.

9:25Romesh Ranganathan:Okay. Well, we've got a present for you.

9:27Paloma Faith:I like vegan stuff anyway. I mean, it fits in with my food groups because I eat everything apart from dairy.

9:35Romesh Ranganathan:Right. I'm glad you said that because we have got a cheese board with some dairy-free cheeses. some vegan cheese for you.

9:42Paloma Faith:Okay, because I hate cheese cheese.

9:44Romesh Ranganathan:Okay, well, this is not cheese cheese.

9:46Paloma Faith:Is this your sponsor? No. No.

11:00Paloma Faith:What is the actual theme of this podcast?

11:02Romesh Ranganathan:There isn't really. Why has this one got flowers in it? Do we know what these are?

11:07Paloma Faith:Yeah, I've got them written down.

11:09Romesh Ranganathan:Right. Would you like me to serve you or something? No.

11:15Paloma Faith:I wouldn't ever let an ethnic minority serve me.

11:20Romesh Ranganathan:Would you like some pop-up?

11:23Paloma Faith:No, we're not doing this kind of humour. No, but I can serve you.

11:26Romesh Ranganathan:Come on, no, I can serve you.

11:28Paloma Faith:Let me serve you.

11:30Romesh Ranganathan:Okay, yeah. That makes sense. That's better, isn't it? What do you want a bit of?

11:35Paloma Faith:Yes, you're high enough.

11:36Romesh Ranganathan:Do you want to try this? Here. Just try that. Flour one. Try this and tell me what you think of it. On a bit of cracker. Okay, there you go.

11:42Paloma Faith:Is this because you're hungry? No, no.

11:44Romesh Ranganathan:I just wanted to see what... This is from like a proper vegan cheese place. What is this we're eating now, Ben?

11:50Paloma Faith:Give me a second. The floury one.

11:52Romesh Ranganathan:Yeah.

11:53Paloma Faith:It's not bad.

11:55Romesh Ranganathan:It's the litmus test, isn't it, this? Of being vegan, isn't it?

11:58Paloma Faith:Mm-mm.

11:59Romesh Ranganathan:Like if you can like vegan cheese, that feels like... No, no. That feels like...

12:04Paloma Faith:Vegan cheeses is how people can get fat being vegan. Isn't it? Yeah. Like, if you just eat whole foods, then you lose loads of weight. But this is terribly processed.

12:16Romesh Ranganathan:Which one are you having? A flour one. I think that's Italian herb. Goat.

12:21Paloma Faith:I'm not a fan of cheese anyway. But I also, I like the grapes a lot. They're whole foods.

12:27Romesh Ranganathan:They're vegan.

12:28Paloma Faith:But what's the point of being something if you're going to try and consume replacements of all the things that you had before?

12:35Romesh Ranganathan:I think this is a gateway thing.

12:38Paloma Faith:What helps people over?

12:40Romesh Ranganathan:It's transitionary. This is like the vaping of cheese. Do you know what I mean? In terms of you want to still have the sensation of, at Christmas, people get out cheese boards.

12:48Paloma Faith:You want a special feeling.

12:50Romesh Ranganathan:Yeah.

12:51Paloma Faith:Yeah.

12:52Romesh Ranganathan:And then when you're in a pub...

12:53Paloma Faith:That's why you've got San Pellegrino.

12:56Romesh Ranganathan:I suppose so.

12:57Paloma Faith:You could sponsor my podcast, guys.

13:02Romesh Ranganathan:Sam Pellegrino, if you're interested. It's fine. Do you want to try some?

13:06Paloma Faith:Do you know, could I just quickly say it as well? Speaking of sponsorship, after our podcast, Centre Parcs gave me a free trip to Centre Parcs because we mentioned it.

13:18Romesh Ranganathan:Are you fucking joking? No. I've never got a free trip to Centre Parcs.

13:20Paloma Faith:I went on Monday.

13:22Romesh Ranganathan:How was it? It was, I don't want to say

13:25Paloma Faith:because it was really nice of them to give it to me.

13:27Romesh Ranganathan:Which one did you go to? That's not a great review, is it?

13:30Paloma Faith:It's so tiring. We do jobs where every day someone sends you an email and says, be here at this time, get in the car at this time, do that, say that, smile and wave, da-da-da, you'll be finished by six.

13:44Romesh Ranganathan:Where in centre parts do you have to smile and wave?

13:46Paloma Faith:But it felt like they sent me an itinerary and I was constantly worried about making it on time, which felt like my actual life.

13:52Romesh Ranganathan:Well, I think that we've got different attitudes is how we do centre parts.

13:56Paloma Faith:What do you do there then?

13:58Romesh Ranganathan:First of all, you can't overbook.

14:00Paloma Faith:Well, I didn't. I only did two activities, one a day.

14:03Romesh Ranganathan:One a day?

14:04Paloma Faith:I was late for both of them.

14:06Romesh Ranganathan:Okay, but that's all right, isn't it? What were the two activities?

14:08Paloma Faith:Owl something.

14:10Romesh Ranganathan:Owl something.

14:11Paloma Faith:Like holding owls. Right.

14:13Romesh Ranganathan:And then what was the other one?

14:14Paloma Faith:Electric boat.

14:20Romesh Ranganathan:And that exhausted you? Owl holding? And you're stood still. And then they just give you an owl.

14:29Paloma Faith:Some people love it.

14:30Romesh Ranganathan:That sounds more about you than it is about Centreparks. Do you know what I mean?

14:34Paloma Faith:You're leaving this in. Don't pursue this conversation. No, no, let's end it.

14:38Romesh Ranganathan:Let's end it. Paloma, we've cut out all the Centreparks. Yeah. Do you want to just say what you thought of Centreparks?

14:43Paloma Faith:It was absolutely brilliant. I'm so grateful that you recommended that. But I do think they should give you a free holiday to Centreparks. They've not offered.

14:50Romesh Ranganathan:What do you think of the owl holding?

14:52Paloma Faith:It was amazing. Did you try the electric boat? Fanging.

14:58Romesh Ranganathan:Yeah? So relaxing. Yeah, it's good, isn't it? Yeah.

15:01Paloma Faith:They're really good. They had ducklings.

15:07Romesh Ranganathan:Yeah. Sounds so good. It's really good. It's beautiful. Why are you wearing a T-shirt saying How Satan?

15:14Paloma Faith:Well, I thought that it feels like at the moment that the entire Western world is worshipping Satan, so I thought I'd join them.

15:23Romesh Ranganathan:What do you think of Satan?

15:25Paloma Faith:Well, I think he's working his stuff right now. You believe we're headed towards Satan? We're not even headed there. Did you see the South Park episode?

15:34Romesh Ranganathan:Yeah, where Trump's banging him.

15:35Paloma Faith:Trump's banging Satan and we all know it.

15:37Romesh Ranganathan:Yeah.

15:39Paloma Faith:Goodbye, America.

15:42Romesh Ranganathan:I did. We'll leave the stuff in about America, but let's not upset Centrepoint. That's the real superpower.

15:57Romesh Ranganathan:I did a satanic worship thing once.

16:00Paloma Faith:Yeah, on your show.

16:01Romesh Ranganathan:Yeah, did we talk about this? Oh, yeah, because we're talking about the weirdest things we've ever done.

16:04Paloma Faith:No, we didn't. It's because I actually have watched your show. Oh, really?

16:07Romesh Ranganathan:Ben, you didn't direct that episode, did you? But I created the whole show. It was the best one. You create the whole show. What do you mean? Are we talking about Asian berogata? What, in the lab you created a Sri Lankan that was trying to get in touch with his culture? Asian berogata, by the way, you're saying that's your idea?

16:23Paloma Faith:He's going around saying that when I had a meeting with him when you weren't there. Right, so you've had a TV meeting. That's what he said.

16:28Romesh Ranganathan:He said he came up with Asian Publicaturn.

16:29Paloma Faith:He said that he came up with all the shows he's ever worked on.

16:32Romesh Ranganathan:No, Plamer, that's not... Sorry, are we going to say that, Plamer?

16:36Paloma Faith:Yes.

16:36Romesh Ranganathan:Can I tell you how, when I met Plamer for the first time, I sat down, I was nervous. Story's already too long, go on. She said, I want to know everything about yourself because I need to know whether I can trust you. Okay. That was the opener.

16:49Paloma Faith:And so he lied for the whole meeting. Yeah, so what did you say?

16:51Romesh Ranganathan:He said he made all those shows. I felt like I was going through my CV of stuff that I'd done. I didn't know what else to say. What was your question, Paloma, to him? How did you phrase it? What did you say? I want to know everything about you. Yeah. And you listed your CV. That says so much about you. You've got children. You're married. You've got a family.

17:07Paloma Faith:And then somebody asked you to tell me about yourself.

17:10Romesh Ranganathan:And then you go, well, I came up with Asian Proctor and initially started on Idiot Abroad. And I feel like I brought the best out of Carl Pinkerton.

17:18Paloma Faith:Carl Pinkerton wouldn't exist without. I can't even say it.

17:21Romesh Ranganathan:Neither of you can say it. Pardon? Nothing.

17:24Paloma Faith:Carl Pinkington.

17:24Romesh Ranganathan:Carl Pinkington. Carl Pilkington. It's different, isn't it? White names are hard. I think 30 % of you believes that you'd be better in this state than me. I do think that. Do you want to do Paloma's assertiveness? No, no, but just answer the question. Is that true? Is that true? That's true, isn't it? What's that? Like a percentage of you believes that you're... at what you do. That's not what I asked you. That's not what I asked you. Anyway, Paloma, let's move on.

17:58Paloma Faith:If you're asking about politics, is he like that? Like diplomatic?

18:02Romesh Ranganathan:No, he's like, you're openly right-wing, aren't you? You're such a... Such a...

18:15Romesh Ranganathan:Paloma, one of the things that I like about you the most, actually, is just how authentically you you are and i think like i don't know if it assertive's the right word

18:26Paloma Faith:but like you just just neurodivergence no but you just say what you think like even when you

18:30Romesh Ranganathan:when you when i asked you to speak to me on the radio to show the first thing you said was what was that rubbish music that was playing while i was waiting to come on and then he started going i thought you liked hip-hop and then you were just so open a bit i won't go into it but you're so open in the chat that you got yourself into trouble yeah like I really respect it because I feel like when I think about you and even like your social media all your like when you do tiktoks and stuff like that it's just pure Paloma and I really love that about you and like how have you like is that something you've always had or is it something you've you've you've grown into like what why how is it you're like that and I think because every time I've seen you but even when we first met you were like that so what how did that happen I think it was because when I was

19:17Paloma Faith:I remember when I was younger and I went to dance college I was really young when I was young I was really shy yeah and I was bullied quite a lot or not necessarily bullied but quite overpowered by dominant characters and then I sort of came out of my shell a bit and I went to dance college and I joined this dance group and they were all like quite overpowering. And I remember my mum was like, why do you try so hard to get these people to like you? Like you're not really being yourself. And the people who you want to hang around with are the ones who like you for you. Don't start trying to fit in and bend yourself to become something else so other people like you.

20:00Paloma Faith:And I was only 18 at the time and I feel like it was that that was the turning point. and then I just became like, okay, I'm just going to be me and see who wants to hang out with me. And then she also said to me, you've got to accept that not everyone's going to like you. So I'm sort of quite accepting of the fact that I'll just be me and then loads of people will hate me but at least the ones that like me will genuinely like me.

20:26Romesh Ranganathan:That is like, that makes sense. It's quite relaxing. It is relaxing.

20:30Paloma Faith:I haven't got to think about like, oh God, how am I going to be? which version of myself am I presenting today because I'm just constantly the same.

20:38Romesh Ranganathan:Have you read that book Courage to be Disliked?

20:40Paloma Faith:No.

20:41Romesh Ranganathan:It's unbelievable. It's about what you're talking about. It's about that thing of like most of your, so much of your anxiety and worry about things would be taken away if you absolved yourself of what other people think about you. Yeah. You think about all of the things like the way you dress, the way you talk. I'm not talking to you, I'm talking to the general you. The way you talk, the way you dress, the way you behave, everything, if you stopped caring, if you stopped genuinely caring and just go, I'm just going to do what I want you would just be so much happier

21:10Paloma Faith:Yeah, I feel like that's how I exist

21:13Romesh Ranganathan:I do think you have that in a way

21:15Paloma Faith:But there are loads of, but sometimes I am disappointed, don't get me wrong I'm not like, no shit's given if someone hates me, I'm always a bit like oh, but I was just authentically me and they find me the most irritating person in the world, but I do move on from it pretty quickly because I've got really loyal friends. Yeah. Well, not the famous ones, but... No. I don't really have any friends, actually. The normal ones.

21:43Romesh Ranganathan:Well, I have a problem with social things. You know, like, I'm a bit flaky, but sometimes... I'm genuinely gutted when it comes to your birthday. But sometimes, like, for example, I don't know, if somebody from your production company somebody you've been working with invited you out for drinks after but you didn't want to go because you sort of feel like you've seen enough of them and actually you don't want to go to that thing how would you say it like do it to like for example do it to ben for example like just

22:13Paloma Faith:no i'm quite boundary like i'm quite well known for saying i'm not coming because i don't like going against what you said because i think that's a worse quality than like saying you're and do something, not doing it makes me doubt people.

22:30Romesh Ranganathan:I was in Glasgow!

22:32Paloma Faith:Yeah, I know, but you knew that when you agreed.

22:34Romesh Ranganathan:I didn't know that. I didn't know that. Wasn't it weakest link? Yeah, but I didn't realise the date's overlapped. Are you guys in a little thing now? You're in a podcast. My mum's got a question for you, Paloma. I've got great news. She's not here. But she's sent a voice note. Can you tee it up, my guy?

22:55Paloma Faith:Hi, Paloma. I met you recently. Hi, Shabby. And you are such a fantastic singer. Romesh has no chance of singing a terrible singing voice, I think. Can you please, please give him a quick singing lesson now?

23:18Romesh Ranganathan:I'll be very grateful. Thank you, darling. Sorry, sorry. I thought it was she asked a question not make a wish what why is she like barking an order

23:32Paloma Faith:if you're tone deaf you can't learn to sing so it's not something you could learn but we could see what you've got to play with okay let's give it a go um should we do do you want to do boys to men

23:45Romesh Ranganathan:yeah okay why have you just looked at me and just gone straight to boys to men

23:49Paloma Faith:no I just I just okay

23:51Romesh Ranganathan:I need to get the lyrics up No, no, just

23:54Paloma Faith:Although we've come Okay To the end of the road Just that line

24:02Romesh Ranganathan:So good

24:04Paloma Faith:Go on, project And it's from the diaphragm

24:09Romesh Ranganathan:This feels like an anxiety dream

24:16Paloma Faith:I can't do it

24:21Loud.

24:23Paloma Faith:Project.

24:25Romesh Ranganathan:Although we've come to the end of the road, still I can't let go. It's unnatural. You belong to me. I belong to you.

24:45Paloma Faith:Well, I don't think, I think you've got a place to learn from. as in you're not tone deaf that's in tune but technically

24:56Romesh Ranganathan:you'd lose your voice on tour

24:58Paloma Faith:if you sung it like that so what you need to do is inhale but feel this how do you know that by the way I've done lessons

25:09Romesh Ranganathan:is it because I'm going from here

25:10Paloma Faith:so you want to go

25:17Paloma Faith:no it's not projected enough Yeah, and you want to feel like it's in the mask of your face.

25:25Romesh Ranganathan:No, I can't feel anything there. Can't you? I'd have wisdom teeth.

25:36Paloma Faith:That's good, that's good. Now try and sing it like in that way. Although we've come. No, it's too nasal. To the end of the road. Can you hear he's doing this? You're like, although we've come.

25:55Romesh Ranganathan:Can I say fucking horrible feedback for a minute? I've put myself out there, Paloma.

26:01Paloma Faith:Why don't we project less? Try singing from...

26:05Romesh Ranganathan:Although we've come to the end of the road.

26:13Paloma Faith:Let's do that, do that.

26:14Romesh Ranganathan:Still I can't let go. It's unnatural. You belong to me. I belong to you. Oh, my God. Paperback Stone. Yeah. Come on, mate. That's out on Spotify when this episode drops. Ben? Well, the faces. No, just quick. Quick, quick, quick, quick. First. Yeah. End of the road. Go. I'm going to go all three of you one at a time Ben go Ben go Ben go John can sing Ben go just all though we've come to the end of the road just do it

26:57Paloma Faith:just one line all the no what is it

27:00Romesh Ranganathan:all though we've come to the end of the road I don't think I know the tune you just heard us sing it John go no Ben go Ben it's you now Ben it's you now Ben it's you it's on you it's on you go go go out the room Yeah, and the company. Yeah, you're out the company. Go, go, go. Three, two, one, go. Although we can't to the end of the road.

27:31Romesh Ranganathan:Okay, well done. Well done for trying it. Three, two, one, Will, go. It feels a bit like bullying, this. Yeah, it does a little bit. But go on.

27:39Paloma Faith:Are you insinuating I might be a school bullying?

27:44Paloma Faith:because the last person who said that

27:46Romesh Ranganathan:wouldn't it be cool if we all three of us suddenly like harmonised I'd love it barbershop yeah barbershop and just killed it it would be but you didn't we'd like no well I can't sing it's like ruined but that's what's going through my head if I just nailed it you might go we should do a duet and then suddenly my life would change yeah can you imagine well so do you think I've got a base

28:06Paloma Faith:yeah

28:06Romesh Ranganathan:I think you're the best

28:08Paloma Faith:singer I've witnessed here today

28:10Romesh Ranganathan:better than him

28:11Paloma Faith:yeah but these two have done nothing John

28:13Romesh Ranganathan:Let's hear it. Okay.

28:16Paloma Faith:I'm going to commit to this.

28:17Romesh Ranganathan:Okay, please.

28:18Paloma Faith:Put the mic in front of it. Although we've come to the end of the road. Oh! Oh, my God!

28:28Romesh Ranganathan:Do you know what?

28:30Paloma Faith:Did you ever used to be in a boy band? No. Did you audition for one? No. That's a shame. It's annoying. I missed my calling.

28:37Romesh Ranganathan:You would be the writer that's... What? What did you say, Ben? It's just annoying. It's annoying. When someone does that, I find that annoying. why like you were fine because you were bad yeah I was okay and then like I was bad I was bad okay is doing a lot of heavy lifting it's like when you someone does karaoke and they suddenly like oh mate that is one of my that is one of my pet peeves I just give it a go yeah I just give it a go oh it is so vile I hate it

29:04Paloma Faith:oh I'll do another if you want we're in the presence of a professional singer

29:09Romesh Ranganathan:so you know

29:10Paloma Faith:in terms of but if I was on the voice which I was I'd have pressed my button for that.

29:15Romesh Ranganathan:Would you really?

29:16Paloma Faith:Yeah.

29:16Romesh Ranganathan:And then you would have been disappointed. The look doesn't help. The look doesn't help. You can't market that.

30:48Romesh Ranganathan:how was it on the voice was it fun

30:51Paloma Faith:it was ups and downs what were the ups I loved I love meeting people so I really enjoyed that bit and hearing their story and then like helping them become more confident because most of the time it's to do confidence so I love that bit

31:10Romesh Ranganathan:Yeah, what were the downs?

31:11Paloma Faith:There was like one day where me and boy George had a bit of a slanging match. And ever since then, he's always like, you still hate me every time I see him. Oh, really?

31:21Romesh Ranganathan:But have you made up?

31:23Paloma Faith:I don't know. It feels like not because of that response. But, and I'm really, I'm conflict averse. Yeah, me too. Even though I'm like a confident person, I'd rather just shrink myself small than have an argument with someone.

31:38Romesh Ranganathan:Yeah.

31:38Paloma Faith:I'd just be like, ooh, just back out of the room slowly.

31:43Romesh Ranganathan:I thought you were really good on the voice. I loved it. Yeah, but then you just got fed up with it.

31:49Paloma Faith:No, I never got fed up. They didn't want me back.

31:51Romesh Ranganathan:Oh, why?

31:52Paloma Faith:Whatever I said, whatever I did, I didn't mean it. You should now go.

31:58Romesh Ranganathan:Want you back. Want you back. Want you back for good. Not you, Ben. Ben, don't. Ben, don't. Because we had a bit of a thing and you're fucking out. so what's your ambition then Paloma because like I feel like I mean do you have like a you're an incredibly successful musician you did The Voice all these Brit nominations you're in the Dark Knight Rises

32:25Paloma Faith:one win

32:27Romesh Ranganathan:you're doing the podcast

32:29Paloma Faith:she's been acknowledged several times by the Brits she's won once winning is good

32:45Paloma Faith:it's all wrecked can you buy can you buy

32:49Romesh Ranganathan:them

32:49Paloma Faith:can you buy

32:50Romesh Ranganathan:them

32:50Paloma Faith:I assume everything's money related in this society that's why I'm wearing this t-shirt yeah

32:58Romesh Ranganathan:we bought the BAFTA nod for Asian provocateur didn't we yeah do you have like an ambition of what you want to

33:06Paloma Faith:because um my ambition would be well ambition is interesting isn't it because people always say how come you're so ambitious and i don't think i am i think that i'm just constantly worried that the popularity success or money will run out and i think it's come it's from coming from like an unstable background yeah where i didn't really want like things were ups and downs or whatever and I just never want to be feeling like that again. So I wouldn't say I was that ambitious. I'd say I was just scared, driven by fear of, like, not being able to support my kids or being unliked or being cancelled or whatever.

33:50Romesh Ranganathan:But then if, like, something happened that, like, you... They decided to use one of your songs on some TV show and they decide to pay, like,£20 million.

34:02Paloma Faith:That would never happen, by the way,£20 million for one single. No, I know.

34:06Romesh Ranganathan:But just go with me on that. Okay.

34:09Paloma Faith:We're in our imagination.

34:10Romesh Ranganathan:If you suddenly had that windfall, would you stop doing what you did? Would you then not give a crap about the podcast or whatever?

34:17Paloma Faith:No, I like being busy.

34:19Romesh Ranganathan:Right.

34:19Paloma Faith:I like being occupied and I think I like a strong sense of purpose.

34:24Romesh Ranganathan:Yeah.

34:24Paloma Faith:At the moment, I'm pretty pleased that I've got a platform because I feel like I can influence culture in a way, quietly in my own little way with it.

34:38Romesh Ranganathan:Because your podcast is kind of smashing it, isn't it?

34:40Paloma Faith:I don't know if it is, is it?

34:42Romesh Ranganathan:You're getting some pretty top-tier guests.

34:43Paloma Faith:I've got good guests like you.

34:46Romesh Ranganathan:Yeah, I got into a bit of trouble.

34:47Paloma Faith:But I never know when anything's successful or not. What did you get into trouble for?

34:52Romesh Ranganathan:Do you know when I said we talked about immigrants being scapegoating,

34:57Paloma Faith:Which is true in my opinion. I'm allowed to say it because I'm white.

35:00Romesh Ranganathan:Yeah. I've been sent, like, since then I've been sent loads of videos of, like, immigrants being, like, really creepy on buses and then, like, tagging me going, Romesh, what have you got to say about this? Because, like, people disagree.

35:15Paloma Faith:Because you're responsible for every brown person that ever came into the country.

35:19Romesh Ranganathan:Yeah, well, that's basically the implication. And look, don't get me wrong, have me and my family brought a lot over illegally? Yeah. Do you know what I mean? But they're not getting on buses. Do you know what I mean? Like, they're just coming and, like, working in various shops in Crawley illegally.

35:36Paloma Faith:I just, I feel like, just to the haters, there's always going to be knobheads in every single walk of life. Yeah. I mean, most paedophiles are white.

35:50Romesh Ranganathan:Yeah. Long make continuum. I know, sorry. we don't like go around

35:56Paloma Faith:going oh I'm not going to like let any of my kids talk to a white man because they're all paedophiles do we

36:03Romesh Ranganathan:no I mean I agree with you

36:05Paloma Faith:yeah but it's just ridiculous logic

36:08Romesh Ranganathan:yeah but I've been replying saying sorry

36:11Paloma Faith:sorry it's my fault is that your people please

36:13Romesh Ranganathan:I do know him sorry I told him to do that sorry he's a bit like that but his bark's worse in his bite sorry just just to reassure people yeah I know him actually if you stop running away from him he'll actually be nice because at school

36:31Paloma Faith:I like used to really enjoy teaching people like refugees how to speak English I used to volunteer for it so I'm partly responsible too because I taught a lot of people who came to this country English when I was a kid

36:43Romesh Ranganathan:I don't want you to say that because then they'll start tagging you in this stuff do you know what I mean

36:47Paloma Faith:bring it out motherfuckers

36:52Paloma Faith:I reckon I've got a really good t-shirt not the Hail Satan one but my favourite t-shirt that I've got it says we'll trade racists for refugees

37:01Romesh Ranganathan:oh that's good

37:03Paloma Faith:it's a wicked one yeah should have worn that today

37:05Romesh Ranganathan:yeah well don't Ben would get upset

37:06Paloma Faith:I say we export the racists and import more refugees

37:10Romesh Ranganathan:I agree just be a nicer play yeah clip that up and stick it out put it on my socials let us see what happens but what I mean is like you're you have still got a platform and I you know it is great what you do but do you have like a me and um Walsh used to call it Sean Walsh used to call it like a a swimming pool moment where like you sort of you go I've done what I wanted to do have you done what

37:35Paloma Faith:you wanted to do I never knew what I was doing in the first place and I still don't know yeah like I didn't even I didn't even know I could sing until somebody offered me a record deal and then I was on tour and I started losing my voice after I'd sold out a whole tour and was like, shit, I better do a lesson because I'd not done a lesson before. So I didn't know how to. So I'm literally like just sort of meandering through life going, oh, I'll have a go at that and have a go at that. Like it's the same with my podcast, with the book. The only thing I actually feel pretty confident about or always did was the podcast because I quite enjoy talking.

38:13Paloma Faith:Yeah. But I didn't think you could make a career out of just being a chatty-patty, which is what I am.

38:20Romesh Ranganathan:Yeah. Yeah, but it's great though, isn't it? So if you retire, like say if you had enough money you could retire now, have you got any unachieved ambitions that you wanted to do?

38:30Paloma Faith:Yeah, but they wouldn't feel good if I had loads of money and could pay to get them. What I'd really like to do is a bit more acting because I do think that I was...

38:39Romesh Ranganathan:Ben could make that happen.

38:40Paloma Faith:Could you? I was actually quite good in Pennyworth, Ben, and it was my last job. And actually, somebody wrote to me the other day and was like, I can't understand how you've not got any work, but, you know, whatever. There's that, and also I'd like to win an Oscar for a song on a soundtrack.

38:59Romesh Ranganathan:Great. So those two things would be lovely. Okay, that feels achievable. So acting-wise...

39:06Paloma Faith:Yeah. What kind of roles? Yeah. I would love to do I'd like my two favourite things are kind of like your fantasy weird stuff like a Tim Burton Wes Anderson world thing yeah you'd be amazing

39:22Romesh Ranganathan:in something like that

39:22Paloma Faith:or just really really British and depressing and a bit tragic like a tragic story like a nil by mouth type film

39:33Romesh Ranganathan:right like something dark yeah

39:35Paloma Faith:I like dark I like the dark thing and I love Pennyworth as well because I was a serial killer in that. Yeah, yeah. I loved it. It made such a nice change from mothering my small children. Yeah. Just going and stabbing people every day and then coming home to breastfeed.

39:50Romesh Ranganathan:Yeah. Listen, as someone who knows, you can do both. What, what, what, what, are you auditioning then?

39:57Paloma Faith:I do and I don't get them.

39:59Romesh Ranganathan:So what do they say? I never get auditions.

40:03Paloma Faith:I get quite a few and I feel like I'm at this weird point which I'm not sure maybe it's like me just maybe I'm untalented there is that it might be that I'm delusional about my skills but quite a lot of people did say that I was good in Pennyworth

40:21Romesh Ranganathan:and you auditioned for Pennyworth yeah so you got empirical evidence

40:24Paloma Faith:part of me thinks that it might be because I'm at this sort of middle aged woman stage where I sort of don't act or look middle aged but I am because people are always a bit confused. Like, they feel uncomfortable about making a 44-year-old woman play a 35-year-old woman. Yeah. But then they say that I don't look like a 44-year-old woman or behave like one, so I can't play that either. And everyone just keeps saying to me, you just need to write your own show. Yeah, you do. So I've been writing my own shows, and then they keep getting rejected as well.

41:05Romesh Ranganathan:The problem is TV's on its arse at the moment. Do you know what I mean? Why do you think you're talking to me on a YouTube thing? Like, the true fears. Careers guidance with Romney. But I think keep trying. Yeah, I do.

41:18Paloma Faith:No, I'm not a giver-upper.

41:20Romesh Ranganathan:No. I think, like...

41:21Paloma Faith:Failure is, like, you know, the key to success, isn't it?

41:24Romesh Ranganathan:Exactly. It is. It really is. You said that you felt rejected by the music industry at 43. Is that true?

41:31Paloma Faith:A bit, yeah.

41:33Romesh Ranganathan:Why? What do you think happened?

41:35Paloma Faith:Well, it's like a young person's game. And then people always come up to me and say to me now in the street, oh, my God, you're an icon. And even though that's quite nice, it also sort of implies that I've had my day.

41:51Romesh Ranganathan:Oh, I see. So what do you feel like?

41:54Paloma Faith:I want people to be like, can't wait for a new album.

41:57Romesh Ranganathan:Yeah, but people do say that. They must do. Not really.

42:01Paloma Faith:Loads of people love to come on my social media and say that the reason why I'm doing a podcast now is because my career's over. And then that just feeds into my already existing thoughts about it.

42:13Romesh Ranganathan:I think people love saying that regardless. So I did a thing the other day. She's washed up. I did a thing where I talked about women's football and men who complain about women's football. And I just think it's pathetic to complain about it. And then somebody said, this is a classic sign of somebody's career's in reverse. Good luck, mate. and then somebody else went I wish it was he's on fucking everything so they were defending me but then it's actually I wouldn't worry about stuff like that being a mum doing a podcast putting out music all of that it's a lot

42:50Paloma Faith:yeah how do you manage? I think that you can never do anything really really well I think you manage by doing everything a little bit shit

43:01Romesh Ranganathan:yeah I agree with that

43:02Paloma Faith:So, sorry, guys.

43:04Romesh Ranganathan:Yeah.

43:05Paloma Faith:I'm not a great mother, not a great musician, not a great, you know, because I've got to do all of the things.

43:12Romesh Ranganathan:Yeah, yeah, yeah. But then do you find it quite stressful?

43:16Paloma Faith:Is this depressing? No.

43:18Romesh Ranganathan:I mean, John's crying, but he cries a lot during this because he's put a lot of money into this being a success.

43:24Paloma Faith:Are you having estrogen injections?

43:26Romesh Ranganathan:I've started taking creatine.

43:29Paloma Faith:What's that?

43:30Romesh Ranganathan:It, like, makes you, like...

43:31Paloma Faith:Pumped?

43:32Romesh Ranganathan:Yeah.

43:32Paloma Faith:What are you trying to get, hench?

43:34Romesh Ranganathan:I'm not trying to get hench, but I just want to take my top of it. It doesn't look like a fucking chocolate pudding's looking bad. No, but I just want to be able to go.

43:42Paloma Faith:You want to go to Centre Park, stand on that slide, and people just look around in slow-mo and go.

43:46Romesh Ranganathan:Yeah.

43:48Paloma Faith:Look at that six-pack.

43:49Romesh Ranganathan:Yeah, or not even six-packs beyond me now. Two-pack. It won't even, no.

43:53Paloma Faith:One-pack? One-pack.

43:56Romesh Ranganathan:I can't believe I'm haggling about packs, but it is. it is just one just gelatin i like i don't like taking my top off on holiday really and that is a form of narcissism because nobody's really looking at you but you know i just sort of but then somebody also said to me it makes you like more mentally focused and all that that's what you tell yourself to but actually it's vanity isn't it it's not it's not vanity it's vanity actually it's vanity but it's not just vanity it's vanity

44:27Paloma Faith:Are you on the skinny pen?

44:28Romesh Ranganathan:No, Ben is.

44:30Paloma Faith:Are you?

44:33Romesh Ranganathan:How big were you before? He wasn't that big.

44:36Paloma Faith:Why did you do it then?

44:38Romesh Ranganathan:The story is I hope you don't mind me speaking for you. One day went for a shower he finished his shower he put his towel and he thought I can't remember seeing my dick at any point. And then he thought I need to get on. Why did you do it?

44:56Romesh Ranganathan:I just thought it'd be good to lose weight.

44:59Paloma Faith:Yeah, but why don't you just do it with a healthy thing or an app or something? He didn't want to try that. You just thought you'd give yourself some sort of thyroid cancer.

45:11Romesh Ranganathan:Someone else has said that recently. Yeah, everybody we've mentioned it to. There were things I didn't like. I read somewhere that it coats your brain. Didn't like that. What, the skinny pen? Yeah.

45:22Paloma Faith:What does it coat in? The hormones.

45:25Romesh Ranganathan:You get like a gel around your brain. Anyway, but it's worked. You look great. Thank you. You look great. Do I think there'll be some serious repercussions later on down the line? Yeah. Almost definitely. But not my problem. I'm retiring soon. You do look great, though. You do look great. Yeah, you look good. He looks great, doesn't he?

45:43Paloma Faith:But I just think, at what cost?

45:46Romesh Ranganathan:What is it? 150 a month? Yeah, it's about that. No, I mean long-term. Oh. Long-term cost, yeah. Yeah. Also, there's other costs, but yeah. Also, every Friday night, he's just shitting and vomiting.

45:58Paloma Faith:Yeah. That's not hot, is it, Ben? Do you always taste a bit of bile?

46:03Romesh Ranganathan:The sulfur burps. Is that what you're talking about?

46:06Paloma Faith:No, I've never tried it. You're telling me like I've done this. Sorry, no, I thought... I'm not that kind of a pop star.

46:11Romesh Ranganathan:No. Oh, Ben. Out of order. The sulfur burps are bad. Yeah. It's horrible. Have you done it? Have I ever done, what, one of the pens? Yeah. No. Actually, it's amazing that you've done it genuinely through. No, but I don't look like... Nobody's going to me, are you on a pen? I still look gelatly.

46:35Paloma Faith:I said that when I saw you.

46:37Romesh Ranganathan:Did you?

46:37Paloma Faith:Yeah, I think you've lost loads of weight.

46:38Romesh Ranganathan:I have lost weight, but I'm still like, it's loose. Do you know what I mean?

46:42Paloma Faith:But that's just to do with going to the gym. Yeah, I guess so.

46:45Romesh Ranganathan:I want to see how it goes for you for the next year or so, and then maybe I'll think about it. I love the fact that you're so open about mental health. What do you mean? Well, you just talk about it openly, don't you? And you're interested in asking about it.

47:00Paloma Faith:Yeah.

47:01Romesh Ranganathan:Do you think you've got any better at being on top of it?

47:05Paloma Faith:I don't know. I mean, I'm surrounded by diagnosed and undiagnosed relatives.

47:13Romesh Ranganathan:Yeah.

47:14Paloma Faith:So it's a big part of my life. And what I realise as well is that I, because I've never been diagnosed with anything, but I've been offered like anti-anxiety meds, antidepressants and all of that, but I don't take them. I tend to do therapy, all types of therapy, different types to help different things. Have you done hypnotherapy? No, I've not done hypnotherapy.

47:42Romesh Ranganathan:Mate. I did hypnotherapy, right?

47:45Paloma Faith:I did it actually. I did it once to stop biting my lips and it didn't work.

47:50Romesh Ranganathan:Oh, I did it because I was starting to get anxious before. I was going on tour and I managed to convince myself that the show wasn't ready or wasn't quite good enough. Yeah. And then, you know, you're talking about when you get a comment on social media that confirms. It's horrible when they confirm the thing. Because when you're thinking it, you just go, I'm just being a bit like. And then if somebody says the exact thing. So I was thinking this tour show is not good enough. And then somebody said, I came to see you. I didn't think it was great. Right. So I spiralled in the street. I'd looked on my phone.

48:24Romesh Ranganathan:You know, I just like I clicked onto social media while I was like, I don't know.

48:27Paloma Faith:Yeah.

48:28Romesh Ranganathan:Just almost by accident. I started spiralling in the street and then I've got to get hypnotherapy. Well, no, I didn't say that. Somebody recommended hypnotherapy. That wasn't that would have been a mad thing to just suddenly think. Anyway, so I went to this hypnotherapist. She goes to me. This is true, by the way.

48:43Paloma Faith:I kid you not. this is genuinely yeah on my word i sat down she goes i want you to try and recreate that feeling

48:52Romesh Ranganathan:of anxious and spinning out like get yourself back there so i started thinking about the show and she said i'm gonna hold this she started like just doing like something with like a pen light and then she said give me a score out of 10 how anxious you're feeling i was like at a nine and then she goes okay uh and she did something like i can't even remember what she did but she's moving the thing and like and she goes where are you now it was like a five and then she went try and find it now and it had gone completely gone she goes i want you to try and feel anxious

49:22Paloma Faith:again and so i was trying to i was trying i couldn't find it and then i was sat there like

49:27Romesh Ranganathan:she was opposite me like you are and i sat there and i like went like that trying to find it and there was a sign on the wall said you won't find it here it's like a fucking magic trick and i've never had it since i mean i have had anxiety about other things because i've got about there's 12 things during this chat that made me anxious do you know what i mean but but for that gone it's

49:45Paloma Faith:amazing should try it no no you did try it didn't i did but maybe i had a a bum hypnotherapist yeah

49:53Romesh Ranganathan:yeah my uh my um mum says she she went to hypnotherapist about smoking stopped 20 years she started after 20 years it was the same day the hypnotherapist died

50:08Paloma Faith:the magic umbilical cord was severed wow all her clients probably were like yeah on our money back yeah someone just sort of sat in

50:20Romesh Ranganathan:a train station started masturbating furiously

50:30Romesh Ranganathan:because that was the addiction that's a gag no that's a brilliant gag we all got it okay Paloma we have got

50:38Paloma Faith:that's why you're you yeah

50:40Romesh Ranganathan:and diversity quotas okay we've got we've got some quotes for you don't show you're going very close to showing Paloma there I know that's why I moved it out okay great so we've got some quotes for you some of them are you some of them aren't

50:53Paloma Faith:okay so I say if I said it or not

50:55Romesh Ranganathan:yeah and there's no like even number it's just like it could be okay do you like this is misquoted like as a oh not really It puts a lot of pressure on it, doesn't it, as an item? Okay, this. Paloma, I'm going to read some stuff.

51:10Paloma Faith:Are you trying to get a telly show?

51:11Romesh Ranganathan:No.

51:13Paloma Faith:You want to be the new...

51:14Romesh Ranganathan:The new what? Graham Norton?

51:16Paloma Faith:Yeah.

51:18Romesh Ranganathan:Well. Sorry.

51:24Romesh Ranganathan:That was my Norton impression. Okay. Some of these you said, some of them you didn't. This is misquoted. How was that? Great, thanks. It was a bit Clarkson, wasn't it? Try again.

51:36Paloma Faith:Bit right wing.

51:37Romesh Ranganathan:Yeah.

51:39Paloma Faith:Don't be so macho.

51:41Romesh Ranganathan:Okay, fine. We're going to see, you're going to tell me whether you said these things or not. It's misquoted. This is misquoted.

51:52Why have we started doing this now?

51:54Romesh Ranganathan:Are we doing the outtake? This is misquoted with me and Paloma. That's good, that's good. We're going to do some quotes for you. Some of them are false and some of them are true. Which one's a witch? It's up to you. It's misquoted. Okay, good. Freestyle, that absolutely nailed it. This is misquoted with me and Paloma. Misquoted. First one.

52:22Paloma Faith:Yeah.

52:22Romesh Ranganathan:I wish I was more stupid.

52:25Paloma Faith:That's not something I said.

52:28Romesh Ranganathan:Okay. Why not?

52:29Paloma Faith:Because it sounds a little bit arrogant.

52:32Romesh Ranganathan:It is something you said.

52:33Paloma Faith:In what context?

52:35Romesh Ranganathan:Well, there you go. There in lies the nub. I quote, I wish I was more stupid because I'm either completely ecstatic and joyous and absolutely high as a kite, or I'm a bit morbid. There's never anything in between.

52:48Paloma Faith:I don't understand the logic in that, but well done, Paloma.

52:52Romesh Ranganathan:2010 Paloma Faith did in The Guardian. OK, here's the next one. I tried being subtle once. It was awful. Nobody noticed.

53:05Paloma Faith:That sounds like something I might say.

53:08Romesh Ranganathan:It wasn't you.

53:13Romesh Ranganathan:I once cried at Anando's because the lighting felt judgmental.

53:17Paloma Faith:I didn't say that.

53:18Romesh Ranganathan:Correct. That is Ramesh Ranganathan.

53:20Paloma Faith:I never went to Anando's.

53:22Romesh Ranganathan:You've never been to Anando's? Of course I have. I go running three times a week outside in the park. Come rain on show. Let me try again.

53:33Paloma Faith:Graham wouldn't do this

53:34Romesh Ranganathan:I go no he wouldn't I go running three times a week outside in the park come rain or shine and I hate every moment of it I hate everything about it

53:42Paloma Faith:that's true I said that you did say that

53:44Romesh Ranganathan:so have you tried running again

53:45Paloma Faith:it's four times a week now

53:46Romesh Ranganathan:you go four times a week you go running

53:49Paloma Faith:well I do running twice a week but I train four times a week okay

53:53Romesh Ranganathan:can we go for a run together one day

53:54Paloma Faith:if you like do you like it I go running all the time okay well we'll do one of my weekly runs together.

54:03Romesh Ranganathan:Okay, fine. That sounds like a big commitment for you. I hate running. But you do it four times a week. I don't believe you. I do. You can't do something you hate four times a week.

54:12Paloma Faith:I only do it if I run next to someone, so I'll do it with you and it'll be done.

54:15Romesh Ranganathan:So who do you normally do it with?

54:17Paloma Faith:A trainer.

54:18Romesh Ranganathan:Oh, okay, fine. I thought you were just finding people. Okay, here's the last one. I don't make music for critics. I make it for people who've named their houseplants and dressed as their emotions. No, let me do that again. I don't make music for critics. I make it for people who've named their houseplants and dresses their emotions.

54:35Paloma Faith:No, I don't think I said that, but I wish I did.

54:37Romesh Ranganathan:You sort of said half of it. You said, I don't make music for the critics. I make it for people who feel a bit weird.

54:42Paloma Faith:That's cute. It is cute, isn't it? Yeah.

54:45Romesh Ranganathan:That's lovely. Okay, look, we're almost done, Paloma. How do you think this has gone?

54:49Paloma Faith:I feel like I don't understand how you're going to make an episode out of this.

54:53Romesh Ranganathan:Listen, that's a little...

54:55Paloma Faith:People will buy anything these days, won't they?

54:58Romesh Ranganathan:That's in a little file called Not My Problem.

55:02Paloma Faith:The editors.

55:04Romesh Ranganathan:Final question for you. The team would like a viral moment. So you've got a choice. So you can either tell me something exclusive that you've never said anywhere before publicly so that we can have something that will really pop. Or you can answer this question. Name the most difficult celebrity you've worked with and why.

55:23Paloma Faith:I'll tell you an exclusive.

55:25Romesh Ranganathan:Go on then.

55:27Paloma Faith:when I was working at agent provocateur the knicker shop I once served Angelina Jolie and she was reluctant to buy the underwear because she looked in the label and it said hand wash only she said that's a pain I've got to hand wash all this underwear and I said what you want to do Angelina is when you go in the bath stick it in the bath rub soap in the gussets rub the gussets together to give it a good clean wash it in the bath water and then hang it on the radiator and by the morning it'll be dry and you can wear it again and it's been hand washed and she thought it was so shocking that a shop assistant had told her goddess of all things to just wash her gussets with a bar of soap that she couldn't stop laughing but she bought so much underwear and she said she loved me really yeah it's good advice it's good advice for anyone who's worried about hand washing knickers you rub the gussets together yeah and you just put a bar of soap in it, do that.

56:25Paloma Faith:Really scrub. Yeah. Oh, that's good.

56:29Romesh Ranganathan:Angelina Jolie? Yeah. Told you she loves you.

56:31Paloma Faith:She washes her gussets. Oh, that's nice, isn't it? That's really nice. I hope she does anyway.

56:36Romesh Ranganathan:Yeah. Okay. Can we... Is that good enough? It's great.

56:41Paloma Faith:I've got others.

56:42Romesh Ranganathan:Go on, give me one more.

56:43Paloma Faith:Huh?

56:43Romesh Ranganathan:Let's get all of them.

56:44Paloma Faith:But I've got some made-up ones.

56:46Romesh Ranganathan:Oh, go on, give us some made-up... Is that true, what you just said? Yeah, that one's true. Okay, give me a made-up one.

56:51Paloma Faith:I once had a threesome with Andre 3000 and D 'Angelo

57:02Romesh Ranganathan:Now, I know you don't realise this, but even that being made up is revealing

57:14Paloma Faith:I was spit roasted oh don't my mum will kill you um no the angelina jolly story is great that's a good yeah i used to work at sunglassart and

57:31Romesh Ranganathan:share came in once and um she bought like a grand's worth of sunglasses and and then i made my monthly bonus like because i had to hit my target um and then the next day i came in and i didn't get my monthly bonus. I didn't actually return them the next day. I think she was just acting like a baller. And then...

57:50Paloma Faith:What, she couldn't actually afford it?

57:52Romesh Ranganathan:I think she probably could afford it. But I just think, I don't know what happened. I think she just wanted to show that she's going, yeah, I'll take those. You know, like...

57:58Paloma Faith:And then just didn't actually like it.

58:01Romesh Ranganathan:Yeah, and then just return them. So I didn't make my bonus that month. Sorry for that. Fuck you, Cher. Paloma Faith.
