In short

A “Thursday” catch-up episode with Romesh Ranganathan and his mum Shanthi, mixing listener questions with family stories. Key segments include Shanthi’s advice/roleplay about Romesh’s kitchen splashback (she pushes for plain white), a debate about vegan cheese gifts and Shanthi’s own dairy choices, awkward family talk about sex scenes and sex education, wardrobe criticism from a listener (baggy trousers), adults buying plush toys (Labubu/Jellycat), and Shanthi’s holiday story of buying fake Labubu that fell apart.

Key claims

Shanthi says anemia makes people grumpy and that she used to give kids Coca-Cola in bottles to stop thumb-sucking and dental issues; she believes sex talk/first experiences can distract students and “mess up your brain.”

Notable examples

Paloma Faith’s kitchen-color advice; a roleplay with “Dinesh” choosing white; fake Labubu bought from an off-grid shop; “Although we can’t let go” singing attempt by Ben/John.

Guests

No recurring guests; only listener voice notes/questions (e.g., Georgie, Hugo, Lucy) and a sponsor segment (Santander).

0:00Romesh Ranganathan:Welcome once again to the Thursday edition of the Romesh Ranganathan show joined once again by mum Shanthi. Do you want to say anything down there? Welcome to Thursday show. Yeah. I'm so excited. Yeah. So this is basically where me and mum kind of catch up and we've monetized our relationship and we catch up about things that might be concerning mum. We take listener questions, don't we? And we talk about how the, I was about to say main episode. I don't mean main episode, but you know, the episode that I do without you. The one that's really bringing in the clicks. Okay. We talk about how that went.

0:32Romesh Ranganathan:So there you go. How are you? I'm fine. Thank you. Because I told you were looking at the camera. There. No, I was just looking to see. Look at me when you talk to me. Okay. But you should know that's difficult for me. What do you mean difficult? Huh? Now you are looking at me. Yeah. All right. How are you? I'm fine. Thank you. Thank you. Thanks for asking. That was worth turning around for. Mum? Yes? Do me a favour, just to go at the top of the episode, could you go like, welcome to the show, but really sort of, and describe what the show is down the barrel of this camera. So imagine we put this right at the beginning of the episode.

1:11Romesh Ranganathan:Your aim is to get as many people excited about this episode as possible. Yeah? Am I on a delay? What's the show? The show. The show. The Romesh Ranganathan show with you. So imagine somebody's just clicked on, or they're just starting to listen, just down the barrel of that camera, like really give it like, you know, welcome, you know. Welcome, Romesh Ranganathan and me. Welcome to the show. I hope you like it. Okay. So, on Monday show, mum. Yeah. Monday show. Yeah. We had Paloma. Paloma, yes. Paloma. Yes, of course I have met her. Yeah, Paloma. Paloma.

2:04Romesh Ranganathan:What's her name? I'm doing the first name, you're doing the second name. Paloma. That's what I thought. That is what I thought. Faith. Faith. Paloma. Paloma Faith. Yeah. And you like Paloma, don't you? I do like her because she, I met her during, I was doing the kitchen, and she said she will give me the colour coordination, but I didn't contact her. I did ring. So you blanked her? I didn't, but she didn't answer. She made a big thing, didn't she, about helping you out? Yeah, then I looked at her house. Yeah. And? And her house is big. My kitchen is small, so I don't think it's going to work out.

2:46So I just left it.

2:47Romesh Ranganathan:Well, she can think in other dimensions, I think. Anyway, I left a piece there. Yeah. And I will get advice what colour I'm going to paint there. What space? In the kitchen, there's a bare wall. I left it there. In the kitchen, for God's sake. No, where in the kitchen? Next to the fridge. Next to the fridge, you've got a completely bare space. Completely bare space. And what do you want to go there? I want to paint it really, really bright colour. Right. I tell you the story. I'd love you to. I was looking for splashback. Splashback. Yeah, splashback. So I went into this place where they make all that.

3:27Then I got some catalogs.

3:29Romesh Ranganathan:Yeah. And I went to my second son at the Y. Dinesh. Yeah. Claire. Get some advice. Right. Oh, oh, this is too bright. I don't think it will look nice in your kitchen. Who is that that said that? Dinesh. Okay. Yeah. Keep it, you know, cool. Yeah. And you said if I put a picture there, then I will get bored. No, but you said you wanted to put like a detailed picture. I just think that's easier to get fed up with. Whereas if you just have a colour or a couple of colours. So I wanted to put colour. Yeah. They said no. So I went for pure white. I don't mean this in a horrible way, but how is it their business?

4:05Romesh Ranganathan:I went for second opinion. It's your kitchen, isn't it? Have what you want. Yeah, I know. But I end up having white. You know the way Dinesh answers sometimes. No, go and show me. Let's do a role play. Okay. So I'm you. Mom. I'm you. Ah. Oh, hello, darling. Yeah. so nice to see you you know the kitchen that Romesh is paying for and I don't seem to give a shit about cutting the cost in any way shape or form even despite the fact I admittedly say it's a small kitchen he's paid more than he did for the one for his whole family of five what do you I want to decide on a design for the splashback yeah a splashback what do you think I thought of a picture maybe Tom Selleck but Romesh the one I don't like as much as you said although I do see him financially as more beneficial.

4:52Romesh Ranganathan:He said I'd get bored of a picture. So my question is, what should I have there? He said, it's a role play. All right. So you, Dinesh, what did he say? What do you think I should have? Oh, mom, oh, mom. What do you think your kitchen is? You don't want any colors. It will look horrible. Go for just plain color. What color? White. What color? White. Isn't white boring? I was hoping for yellow or orange. I should have... No, I like orange, yellow or blue. I like yellow, orange or blue. Oh, mum, are you mad? Your kitchen is so small. You can't put all those colours and make it small. So just go for really, really plain colour.

5:43Romesh Ranganathan:I don't think I should have asked you. I'm going to go away and ask Paloma... Oh, shit, what is her surname?

5:52Romesh Ranganathan:I'm going to ask her. Goodbye. Anyway. I thought it was quite good. Yeah, should we put a picture of Dinesh on Shanti's face? Yeah. She's going to be delighted to see that, I imagine. I know. For adults with Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis symptoms, every choice matters. 7:18Romesh Ranganathan:Sam's Club

7:29With me Shanti

7:31Romesh Ranganathan:Now the thing I need to raise with you is First of all I want you to tell me what you honestly think about this Okay So every guest we give a present to Like a gift Yeah. And it's supposed to be in keeping with, you know, what their interests might be. And so we'd heard that Paloma was trying to move away from dairy. Okay. And so we got her a vegan cheese board. Vegan cheese board, okay. It's made out of like potato and stuff like that. All right. What do you think of that as a present? Such a good idea. Encourage her to stay away from dairy products. And yeah, I'm also thinking of doing it. Go for almond milk or oat milk?

8:10Romesh Ranganathan:Oat milk, yeah. Okay. So. Yeah. What do you have for lunch, Shanti? I had salad and cheese. You had a cheese salad? Cheese, Caesar salad. Caesar salad? Yeah. Okay. All right. Fantastic. And is that you trying to move away from dairy? From tomorrow. From tomorrow. Because I haven't done the shopping. No. Ah, no. Yeah. So you provided the food. Yeah. I can't be choisy, can I? Well, you certainly can't be choisy. Yeah. Choisy. My question to you is this, right? I know where you got the salad from, and I know I got the salad from there as well. I don't have dairy. I got a dairy-free salad. Yeah. And if you don't mind me calling you out on this, Ben said, here's my phone.

8:59Romesh Ranganathan:Choose what you'd like. Yeah. So when you're saying, I don't want to be choisy, choisy. You chose the bloody Caesar salad, didn't you? What's wrong with that? What I'm saying is you're absolving yourself of responsibility. I cut down on red meat. Right. I ended up become no iron in my body. Anemic. Anemic. Yeah. So I'm frightened to cut down things. So at my age, we should have everything, B12, iron, all sort of things. So you're not going to give up dairy? I might do. If it doesn't upset my stomach, I'll definitely go dairy. Okay. We don't mean to get farty. Did they say that the anemia leads to any kind of grumpiness or shortness of temper?

9:48It does. Because it makes you tired. Can we get some iron tablets now, please?

9:56I don't think that's fair.

9:58Romesh Ranganathan:Okay. But it upsets me. I don't see you. I don't we never have proper conversation that's why we're doing it now on front of the television sorry to show the people that we have got a problem oh okay so what's the problem tell me what the problem is I don't see you why I should be able to come to your house anytime you can but I won't be there what kind of answer is that I think maybe you are lack of iron I think yeah okay Now, Mum, you asked Paloma a question. Paloma? Great. Good. Can we play it into Mum, please? Can you please, please give him a quick singing lesson now? I'll be very grateful.

10:49Thank you, darling.

10:52Romesh Ranganathan:Sorry, sorry. I thought it was she asked a question, not make a wish. What? Why is she, like, barking an order? If you're tone deaf, you can't learn to sing. Go on, project. And it's from the diaphragm. Although we've come to the end of the road, still I can't let go. It's unnatural. You belong to me. I belong to you. OK, what did you think? What's the problem? horrible you are holding your face like no because i'm doing the you know like why why because that's how they do it in the video do you want to hear john sing yeah we got ben actually no if we can let's hit ben actually let's hit no let's get ben well thank you well thank you well i was nervous yeah you should hear ben that's true and then you can hear john you play it if you want okay here we go mum here's Ben three two one go although we can't to the end of the road that's horrible isn't it that's that's not kind you're laughing too why are you laughing that was bad wasn't it huh that was bad it is bad yeah now Will you refused didn't you yeah but John did sing I'd I'd love to get your take on this.

12:20I'm going to commit to this.

12:21Romesh Ranganathan:Okay, please. Put the mic in front of it. Although we've come to the end of the road. Oh! Oh, my God! What do you think of that? Oh, my God, Joel. What do you think, Mum? Teach him something. You can't teach talent like that. He's just got an ability. I'm not. You are a talented boy in certain things. But if you practice, you can sing. I will be as good as John. It doesn't matter how long you practice. You're not going to get as good as that. That's just natural gift, isn't it? When somebody asks you to sing, you make it as a joke. That was me trying. I wasn't trying to make it as a joke. That was me trying.

13:00You can't sing much.

13:01Romesh Ranganathan:I can't. You can't just insist. You can't Sri Lankan mum your way through to me singing, being able to sing. It's not going to happen. Can you sing? But my pronunciation is wrong. Okay. Well, why don't you sing something that you can sing? No. What are you saying, although we've come to the end of the road? No, I'm not prepared. Okay. Follow my face. Could you ask her to give me a colour to put on my roller when she comes next Thursday? She's done. She's done? Yeah. That's the one I watched. Yeah, that was a recording. Did you think I was there? Yeah.

13:52Romesh Ranganathan:okay okay yeah we're gonna do some uh audience dilemmas and questions and stories yeah sure uh as always you could you send them in via whatsapp or email we do prefer not that we don't we don't mind an email we love your emails but just a voice note's like better What are the contact details Ben? It's 07 I don't know the number So what were you hoping, you were going to guess the number I didn't want to look like I didn't know You really do look like you didn't know 07 It's definitely I think it is Okay, the contact details are going to appear here Alright, mum Are you ready to give the people some wisdom?

14:34Yes, I'm ready okay ben yeah go you want one no okay let's just leave it shall we thank you so much

14:48all right come on hi shanty i don't know if you're looking for a partner but if you wanted dating advice or sex advice who would you go to um romesh or dinesh and why okay what's embarrassing

15:02Romesh Ranganathan:about this. Have we actually got any real ones? No, it's a real one. Well, that's your wife. Yeah, yeah. Yeah, no, it is. Yeah, okay. So let's hear it one more time. That's Georgie, mum. Hi, Shanti. I don't know if you're looking for a partner, but if you wanted dating advice or sex advice, who would you go to, Romesh or Dinesh, and why? Okay, mum. No, I won't. Do you want to say anything to Georgie? She's asked the question. Hi, Georgie. love you so much darling but I won't get advice from any of them why? because then in between they will talk about it did you hear what mum said? she wants a man so what do we do?

15:44and they laugh so they won't accept any man that I'm going to sleep with so

15:51Romesh Ranganathan:sorry Georgie mum that's first of all Georgie's not asking for her own personal she's asking out of interest that's the first thing no she's asking me sorry Georgie Georgie, sorry, if you thought my mum was going to get her leg over, she isn't. Sorry, Georgie. I said, sorry, Georgie. That's it. But first of all, when were you under the impression that me and Dinesh didn't want you to have a man? To me, I can't find anybody that look at a man and then you will get the idea. Oh, I really like him. Yeah. I never got it so far. Okay, but that's not on me and Dinesh, is it? No, no, no. What about sex advice?

16:28sex advice I'm not interested in sex okay yeah but I think

16:33Romesh Ranganathan:who would you think would be better like who's going to be more adept at giving good advice generally Ramesh about sex yeah oh the way you are god you just told me earlier a bit of sex advice never leave it hanging yeah you are you are not getting enough at home right so how can you give me sex advice What advice do you want? No, I don't need any advice about sex. I know what to do. Do I have to get advice from my son? What to do? I know everything. You know everything? Of course. Good for you. Are you quite open, you two? How open are we? We haven't actually talked about sex as a thing, have we?

17:17No, we don't talk about sex.

17:18Romesh Ranganathan:Is that a normal thing, to talk about sex with your mum? John's shaking his head. Not really, no. No, it doesn't sound nice. Do you talk about sex with your mum? No. No. Why did you say it like that? No, she's told me something like conquests, but not... Right, but she's not gone and then I fucking ground it out or whatever.

17:41Romesh Ranganathan:She's not gone into detail. You used to talk about your girlfriend's dad, not to me. I'm very strict. I'm stricter than your dad. Yeah. Because as I said to you, don't ever touch a girl before you enter university. That will fuck up your brain. you will fail in everything, okay? Did you listen to me? No. Well, it didn't fuck up my brain there, did it? Thank God. God has given you the talent, naturally. How do you think touching a girl fucks up your brain? But while the lecturer is giving you a lecture, you'll be thinking about the sex. Oh, shall I do this way? Shall I do that way? Or this way?

18:20Or horse ride?

Read the full transcript

18:27Romesh Ranganathan:this is unbelievable this is remarkable it's very very true it really does mess up your brain in what way first time you're experiencing having sex with a woman then you go to school school or college so I have sex with a woman then go to school what year is this nine? Pervert. Don't talk like a pervert. Don't talk like a pervert. Okay, go on. So you have sex. Yeah. Then you go to school. And you want more. Right. So when the lecturer giving you all this valuable education, what do you do? You're not concentrating because you're horny. Horny. Yeah. Okay, I get it. That's why. Yeah. But thank God both of you did well.

19:11So I'm grateful to go. Okay?

19:16Romesh Ranganathan:Okay, great. If it wasn't sex, would it be all right? Like if it was kissing? No. That's how you start, isn't it? You touch. Yeah. The girl doesn't say anything, they'll touch more. Then the arm will go around to the boobs on the other side. The boobs on the other side? Which way is the girl facing? I'm confused. So you approach from behind.

19:40Romesh Ranganathan:No. And then you reach around to touch her boobs. And she goes, who's this? If she lets you touch the boobs. Right. from behind bingo bingo bingo yeah

19:55okay okay I feel like you get if you talk to your you get like forced into talking to your mum about sex yeah at a certain age

20:03Romesh Ranganathan:yeah whereas mum doesn't you don't really like talking about sex no once it's happened the incident Claire Rame Dinesh we were watching a film there's a sex scene come so Dinesh was covering oh my god mum is here I said listen, Dinesh, we all have done it. What's the problem? I know, but you still don't want to watch sex with your parents, do you? Why not? You have done it. You know what's going on. I know, but still, it's just a bit icky, isn't it? Do you know what I mean? What's the meaning of icky? Just discussing. You're just sort of sitting there going, I'm watching two people bang and my mum's there.

20:41Romesh Ranganathan:Do you know what I mean? It's horrible. Is it? I think so. Am I being weird in that? No, I don't think so. Like you want someone to break the tension. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. So I don't think that's weird. Put the cushion over your face. Cushion. That's not where the cushion needs to go. Hey, it's Christy from Lululemon. 21:59Romesh Ranganathan:Hi, this is a question for Shanti. If you had to give Ramesh advice on how to dress better, what's the first thing you'd ban from his wardrobe? Who's this? He's called Hugo.

22:17Romesh Ranganathan:he's my paddle partner he's your paddle partner okay thank you Hugo for your message right mum the advice I can give I know the baggy trousers baggy jeans it's all fashionable to wear but you don't have an ass so you rather keep wearing those things men for me my opinion I love to see tight trousers but I don't think baggy trousers do anything to you so take that out and get your bum big the exercises I send wear nice trousers well first of all can I take the opportunity to thank Hugo once again for this voice note. We managed to ask a question about a wardrobe, any wardrobe corrections, and I thought that would be self-esteem damaging enough.

23:12Romesh Ranganathan:But as it is, Mum has, as always, pivoted onto something personal about me. So let's examine the logic of what you're saying, if you would allow me to. Of course. I shouldn't wear baggy trousers. No. Because I don't show off the arse. Yeah. But I don't have an arse. And your solution to that is to wear tight trousers to show off the absence of ass? It just falls down. Not the absence of ass. Yeah. Do some exercise to get the... I have tried, mum. It's just some of it is genetics. How come so many these guys are doing all this? They've got different genetics. Different genetics? Yeah. Your dad hasn't had an ass.

23:50Romesh Ranganathan:Yeah, that's how genetic... But you are his son. I know, but I don't look exactly like him, do I? No. I don't want you to anyway. Okay. It would be weird if you wanted me to look exactly like him. The point I'm trying to make is, it's not my fault I don't have an ass. I've tried squats, I've tried goblet squats, I've tried barbell squats. Nothing there. I've done like that one where you, do you know where you have your back against the bench, and then you put the weight here, and then you go like that? Yeah, yeah, yeah. You know what to do. Why are you doing this? No, I'm saying that's the exercise.

24:26Romesh Ranganathan:And none of it's worked. I've still got no arse. Have you got an arse Ben? Of course he has. Of course he has. Does it look flat? We sat down on a chair. Sorry. When he walked around, you could see his arse. But you're super flat like chapati. Like chapati.

24:54Romesh Ranganathan:oh god it's happening again all right thank you have we got any more uh yeah hi remission shanty it's lucy from london okay do you think adults buying soft toys like jelly cats and the booboos is cute or is it weird Okay. Do you know what jelly cats and labubus are? Labubu, yes, I know. Okay. It's like a little teddy bear. Who was that from? Sorry, Ben? Lucy. Lucy, thank you so much for your voice note. Lucy, I would love to have this labubu? Labubu, yeah. Labubu. But I don't know where to get it. So, you mean Romare's playing with those things? Why not? Why not? That's what she said. I don't think that was a question.

25:41What did she say there?

25:41Romesh Ranganathan:She's saying adults, just generally adults playing with those things. Yes, why not? Whatever you like, it's a free world. Whatever you like, buy it and enjoy. I'm not against. Okay. I think it's strange. It's not strange. It's not strange. I've got no judgment on it. Yeah. But in my opinion, it's a bit strange. Okay, la boobie's fine, but that is a kid's thing, la boobie's. No, ladies have... Poppy's teacher at her old school had a la boobie that she wore every day. There you are. I love to have one. That's a conviction. For my handbag, who's going to buy it? Pardon? What? I love to. I love to.

26:15Would you? Yeah, I love to. Who's going to buy it?

26:18Romesh Ranganathan:Has it been made illegal for you to conduct transactions of your own? You can buy one yourself, can't you? That's always a possibility. Whenever you're thinking about things I would love, I love it. How can I make it happen? Pay for it. Buy it. Find it. Buy it. That's my tip for you. Okay, thank you. I had a bit of an awkward situation on holiday. What's that? Regarding Labubus. Do you know that Rob Beckett was on holiday at the same place as me? Oh, I didn't know that. You don't tell me anything. No discussion between us. No point covering your ears when I tell the truth. Moosa.

27:02Romesh Ranganathan:Okay. Anyway, Rob Beckett was on holiday at the same place. Okay. And his daughter's really like the boo-boos. One day I hired a car And we went out Looking around off the resort Off resort We went off grid And then a shop I went to Had LeBuboos Yeah So I said to Rob I found some LeBuboos Would you like them? And he said yeah Could you buy me a couple But they're probably fake Because it was in like Ah the site Yeah So I bought the LeBuboos And I bought the ones That he selected And then I did Made a big show Presenting them to his girls And they They I mean, they couldn't have been more... They looked dangerous.

27:41Romesh Ranganathan:There were bits falling off them. They didn't look like what there was on the box. Oh, that's a fake one. Yeah, I know. Why did you select the fake one? Because there was no way... That was my first experience with labubus. So I didn't know what... I was like, okay, it says labubu on the box. I guess this is labubu. In television, they are saying, don't buy those things. Yeah. There's so many... Who's watching television anymore? Welcome to my podcast. Don't you watch the news? I do watch the news. They keep on saying it, don't buy these things. Right, why? What, the boobies or fake? The boobies, yeah, the fake one.

28:15Romesh Ranganathan:Why? Dangerous for the kids. Yeah, wow. It's everything falling apart and they can eat it or put it in the mouth. I can't believe you went and bought the fake one. Believe it, baby, I bought two. God, fuck off, Ramay. Fuck.

28:33Romesh Ranganathan:Well, one unexpected end to a chat about the boobies. I'm so disappointed in you. Yeah, me too. Maybe if I ask you to buy a Rolex for me, you might buy the fake one and fool me. Yes. Yeah? It's probably safest to not ask. I think our sponsors have sent in one question as well. Okay, it's time for our sponsor segment, the Santander Question of the Week. This week's question, this is where Santander asks us a question. I learned to do it. I just turned around. It's there. Yeah, I know. Read it. Santander. Very good. Say it without looking. Santander. Okay, it's time for questions on the edge, courtesy of our friends at...

29:11Romesh Ranganathan:At what? At? Santander. Yeah, this is where I ask you a question relating to one of the benefits of the... Santander. Edge credit card. Yes, mum, they were very impressed with your performance last week, apparently. Their feedback was, has potential. Okay, this week's question, mum, is about control. Yeah. Because the Santander edge credit card gives you up to 56 days interest-free giving you the flexibility to pay your balance little and often. You can stay on top of it. And then make sure you pay off monthly as not everyone has a Romesh taking over the industry to bail out their mother. Darling, need a little help?

29:52Romesh Ranganathan:Hello, could I have assistance? I will pay you back. Oh, what a blessing. These are all jokes. These are all jokes. Listen, it's not joke.

30:04You are letting me know That's what I say I'm joking I'm honestly joking Okay Mocking me

30:12Romesh Ranganathan:I'm not mocking you You are You did that day What? Somebody came What did I say? Started mocking me Okay You are changing the topic now? Yeah Well you're pulling out something From months ago For some reason Okay But it's happened though It did happen yeah The question is Mum Do you think you had control of me and Din as kids, what tactics would you try to try to keep us under control? I guess as adults, social services can't take you away, or me, so you can answer freely. Did you think that you had me and Dinish under control? I did, I did. I always let you know, make sure that you do your homework and tidy your bedrooms and things like that.

30:55Shanti, would you ever try and sort of make Rom and Din do what you wanted to by maybe like giving them treats or what would you kind of do to positively get them to do stuff? Yes, I do. I will say I'll buy something if you do that, if you finish that. And once, yeah, I do treat them and I give a lot of, because I love to give them.

31:17Romesh Ranganathan:Do you know like the baby's bottles with the like the tea on it? Yeah, yeah. Mum used to give us those with Coca-Cola in. Are you serious? Yeah. It's true. To keep them quiet. No. No, full Coke. Yeah. At what age? I can't remember. What age was it? Anyway, I've got serious dental issues. How often is this happening? Until I went to the dentist, it was like Stonehenge. How often is that? Regularly, right? Regularly, yeah. Your follow-up question, does diabetes run in the family? The answer to that is yes. I used to take him to the dentist all the time. And he'd go, what is happening? I know why.

31:59I know why. He used to suck his thumb.

32:04Romesh Ranganathan:Oh, yeah. So that day, he stopped sucking his thumb. It's a kind of comfort, I think. And that is why mum gave me Coca-Cola in a bottle. Has that cleared that up? Yeah. Okay. Now, all you've got to do, mum, is you've got to go pay smart with a Santander Edge credit card. Now, last time we did this, it became clear that your entire life you've been saying Santander.
