In short

Romesh Ranganathan and his mum Shanthi recap Monday’s guest episode, then discuss social-media trends (autotune, “climbing” finger videos, d*ck/twerking/dwerking algorithm suggestions). They also run an audience “grandparents” Q&A: grandparents’ odd mistakes (dog food mistaken for stew; eating cinnamon/sand; Christmas lights mistaken for sweets), worst habits, and a dilemma about whether grandparents should choose their grandparent nicknames (Nonna/Nani/Appama).

Key claims

parents should ultimately decide grandparent names only if confusion is unavoidable; Shanthi argues grandparents should choose since they’ll be called it.

Notable examples

Tim Minchin refused to sing; Shanthi’s autotune “dudes” recording; granddad eating “Sahara and sand” as cinnamon; mum calling Romesh’s penis “kaka” and poo “caca.”

Guests

none in this Thursday recap; Monday’s guest mentioned is Tim Minchin.

0:00Romesh Ranganathan:Welcome back to the Thursday edition of the Romesh Ranganathan show. I'm joined by my mum Shanthi Ranganathan.

0:10Romesh Ranganathan:Too much. And every Thursday we look back at Monday's episode. Here's some of your stories and dilemmas and then mum will give us one of her topics, don't you? Of course. And it's a way of us sort of getting together regularly, isn't it? Yeah, that's a lovely topic. Mum, instead of a jingle this week, can you read the weather forecast like you're on the six o 'clock news? I feel like I'm in a K hole. Okay, go on. Go, mum. Light rain. You've got to be sterner than that. It's news, like news. Light rain. Sort of go, weather today with Shanti Ranganathan and then do it. Light rain? No, you've got to say that.

0:44Romesh Ranganathan:Why are you? So you go, welcome to the weather with me, Shanti Ranganathan. Welcome to what? The weather. Welcome to the weather? Yeah. Welcome to the weather from Shanti Ranganathan. light rain showers and moderate freeze yeah really good yeah

1:13Romesh Ranganathan:with me shanti on monday we had tim minchin Tim Mention yeah and you asked him to sing for you he didn't want to do it did he no he refused to sing he didn't want to sing he didn't want to sing no but I don't think you really pushed him you gave him an out what do you mean what did I say you went don't do that before he didn't know he might have done it well he looked reluctant so I want to be able to have further bookings do you know what I mean so if you get people in you go it's like Guantanamo and we're going to force you to do whatever then people aren't going to come on are they so I'm just trying to guarantee.

1:50Do you know what I mean? No, as Ben said. As Ben said.

1:55Romesh Ranganathan:Go on. Push him hard. He would have sung. Push him hard. Some people, yes. You know what I mean. Yeah, I'm not saying, I just repeated what you said. But some people are so shy. Yeah. So suddenly the words don't come. Yeah. I mean, he's a singer by trade. So I don't think he was shy. Maybe he didn't know what song to sing. Yeah, he didn't say that though. He just said he didn't want to. But if he pushed him. If he's a singer, of course he would have given you. Yeah, but we're not inviting them. So if somebody asks you, come on to me, say some comedy words. Yeah. Will you do that? No. Ah, there you are.

2:29Yeah. You got the answer to it.

2:30Romesh Ranganathan:Aren't we proving my point? But I think what Shanti is trying to do is try and encourage you to, like, get the best out of the guests, isn't she? That's it, yeah. You should have that talent. Okay. Work at it. Yeah. You'll succeed. Yeah. Well, we actually gave him a stylophone. What for? To play. It's an instrument. Ah, right, right. where you touch the thing with the... You have a little thing and you touch the key. Yeah, he did. He's actually incredibly good, isn't he? Yeah. Have we got it? Yeah, I've got it. Oh, my God.

3:00Romesh Ranganathan:Oh, God. Yeah, what do you think? No. No? What the hell is that? That's the style of... This is like a child playing. That's the stylophone. That's the instrument. I know it's an instrument. Yeah, so that's how you play it. He'd literally had it for like 10 seconds and he started doing that. We all thought it was really impressive. Not to me, though. Okay, fine. He also broke the mic stand that you were using by accident. I never had seen him there. I never heard of him. You see a singer? Yeah. I love music. Do you know Matilda the Musical? No.

3:44Romesh Ranganathan:A lot of people want Shanti to be in the main episode. Yeah, I just, I think it's better if we keep you away from the guests. You don't know who anybody is. You should warn me. I'm going to ask this. Yeah, you did. Well, you did. You asked him a question. He said, can you sing, please? And he refused. Yeah, okay. Why are you in a mood? I'm not in a mood. Oh, okay, fine. My face is changing, but I'm not angry with you. Okay, fine. All right. I feel Tim's going to be angry when he watches this back. Turn it up. Storm has zero sugar and 200 milligrams of caffeine, so you can turn that workout up a notch.

4:19Good energy in, good energy out. Energy for life. Plan B is a backup birth control option that's there for you when things don't go according to plan. It specifically works after unprotected sex and before pregnancy occurs by temporarily delaying ovulation. Plan B is available nationwide at all major retailers and through delivery apps like DoorDash. No ID, prescription or age requirement. It's the number one OBGYN recommended brand of emergency contraception and it won't impact your future fertility. That's Freedom the Bee. Use as directed.

4:54Romesh Ranganathan:Mum, what's your topic for today? Social media. What is most popular or trend now? What is a trend? Yeah. No, you are not allowed. You're asking me questions about singers. Yeah. Now you are going to Google it. Well, the thing is, about social media, is it's often on your phone. So I'm going to show you a trend. So what do you want to know, Shanti? What everybody watch now. Yeah, so I'm going to show you. So this is quite good, actually. You make your finger like this. And then it looks like the thing's climbing up your finger. That's quite popular.

5:38Romesh Ranganathan:Look, he's got the bananas because he climbed up my finger. That's good, isn't it? I'm not interested in that. Come on. Keep your finger up your ass. No, look. What? What? Unusual response, I would say. Do you want me to show you another one? No, thank you. Okay. Another one, Mum, is this autotune trend. So it's like where you make a song. All right, shall I show you? and then I can show you how to do it and you do one of your own. All right, this one I have. Why the fuck my whole soul? Yeah, don't worry about the words. You can do whatever topic you... I like to look for her parents. Okay, so what you've got to do is you've got to go, my name is Shanti and I really like to see some dudes, some dudes, and then I'll record it for you and then we'll turn it into that video.

6:30Romesh Ranganathan:What do you think? Okay, hold on one second. Okay, so I'm going to record the vocal now, okay? Okay. Ready? So you've got... Do you know what you're going to say? Yeah, my name is Shanti. I like to find some dudes. Yeah, but you go, my name is Shanti and I'd like to find some dudes, some dudes, some dudes. Okay, ready? Okay. Okay, go. My name is Shanti, I like to find some dudes, dudes, dudes. Okay. Okay. That's good. Well done. That was great. That was really good. First time? My name is Shandi. I like to find some dudes. Dudes. OK, let me just... It's going to take me a little bit of time to...

7:14My name is Shandi. God! This is rubbish.

7:19Romesh Ranganathan:Hold on. Fever tree. Oh, God, Romy. Hold on. OK, there we go. My name is Shandi. I like to find some dudes. Dudes. Do's.

7:37Romesh Ranganathan:What do you think, Mum? Not bad. Yeah, really good. Okay, so there you go. That's what's trending. Have you been targeted with, is it dwerking? Dwerking? Have you heard of that? Twerking. No. What's dwerking? Well, you can probably work out what it is. I can't, actually. Am I the only one that gets fed this? Well, the algorithm rewards what you look at. Yeah. So what's dwerking? Should we move on? No, what's twerking? I think it's a man, and he's standing in front of the camera, and there's a certain track, and then he sort of shakes... His dick. Yeah, and it sort of flaps against his trousers.

8:20Romesh Ranganathan:Have you not seen that? And that's being sent to you? Well, it's not being sent to me. No, but by your algorithm. Yeah, well, I've had it, yeah. You've had it so much, you thought it was a trend, and you thought we'd all know about it. Does no one know? No. Have you ever heard of dwerking? John? No. Will? No, you're taking the picture. I'm not taking the picture. It's the first time I'm hearing it. That's never once come up on my face. Maybe someone told me about it. Well, you've watched the video and you described it in detail. Can you show us? Just go to favourites. Hold on, I have to type it in.

8:57Romesh Ranganathan:Have you not heard that track? I've heard that sound very quickly. That's a good point Will. I have seen this before. Yeah. But it's so big. Oh god.

9:18I never knew they have these sides of wonder.

9:32I'm telling the truth

9:35Romesh Ranganathan:R.I.P. Dad Now

You'll never have to fight a stranger for a plug again, unless that's one of your hobbies. And if you're feeling fancy, you can stand outside with a cup and not approving it at your car while it powers up. The true mark of success. So get started and join PodDrive at edfenergy.com slash pod. UK fuel mix disclosure information published by the government department, DESNES, recognises electricity from wind, solar and nuclear fuel produces zero carbon dioxide emissions at the point of generation.

11:10Romesh Ranganathan:For verification, visit edfenergy.com slash zero dash carbon. Really good.

11:20Romesh Ranganathan:It's time for our audience interaction. Fantastic. Okay. I'm ready for it. This is where people send in, listeners send in questions, queries, stories, et cetera. We like voice notes, don't we? But we also like... emails. Emails, okay. Ben. Do you want to read one out? This is about... Love you too, yeah. A grandparent. Okay. Are all the questions about grandparents this week? We've got... We had two or three. I know we thought we could do a theme, but then we've got no voice notes about grandparents. Do you want to do it as a theme or should we just? Well, I don't know what the messages are. So it's difficult for me to.

12:02Romesh Ranganathan:Anyway, go on. If it works, you can go and say it's the theme. Okay, fine. Christ. So these are all about grandparents. My granddad. Well, if that's what it is, then I'll be doing that, won't I? Yes. Do you want to just read the message? Sure. my granddad once came home from golf, opened the fridge and reheated what he thought was beef stew. He was halfway through it before my gran walked in and told him it was the, it was the dog's food. He just shrugged and carried on. Yep. What's the most stupid. sorry. Did you want a reaction? Were you waiting for a reaction? Oh shit, son. What's the most stupid or most unbelievable thing you've ever seen your grandparents do?

12:46Romesh Ranganathan:Well, I didn't have much interaction with my grandparents, so I can't. No, you can't answer that because you've never seen... I've seen my mother, but my father was dead anyway. Yeah, it's got darker than we'd hoped, hasn't it? So what have you seen your grandparents do, Mum? My grandparents? Yeah. When I was growing up, it's a sad story in a way. Okay. Yeah, go on. Let's see. Because it's... Is this like the beef stew dog food? It's very sad. This is the truth. I don't want to create anything. Okay, fine. My mother lost my dad when she was 23. Okay? So my grandparents, since the daughter become a widow, they never slept together.

13:32So they slept in separate rooms. So they are very religious people. So I didn't see anything. they go to temple and come back and my mom my grandmother was a teacher i only thing i remember the the date the pension comes my grandfather will be talking to my grandmother sitting there and chatting to get the money pension money because he didn't have a job that's all i know

14:05Romesh Ranganathan:nothing else that is crazy then we just put like a little rim shot That's it. Nothing interesting. Do you know what? I don't know if we'll go with this theme as a... Oh. Yeah. My granddad ate Sahara and sand once. He thought it was cinnamon. I brought back some Sahara and sand in a jar. Yeah. As like a token when I went to Morocco. He ate everything. Yeah. We came into the kitchen one day. Half the jar is missing and he's sprinkling it on his food. Thinking it was cinnamon. Was he okay there? Oh, he was enjoying it. He thought it was cinnamon. He didn't actually realise it was cinnamon. I feel like there's some other issues there.

14:42Romesh Ranganathan:He didn't realise it wasn't cinnamon. No, he just thought it was crunchier than usual. Jim, when Dad got really angry because he thought the Christmas tree lights were fruit jellies. Yes, he tried to eat that. He lost his shirt. He just went to bite it. It was glass. We have a sweet called jujups. Jujups. Yeah, in Sri Lanka. Big fruit jellies, jujups. Fruit jellies covered in big, big sugar. Some of the Christmas lights I bought, it looked like that sweet. We just about to bite it. And I said, that's not sweet. That's Christmas life. Because he said when he was little, he used to eat a lot in Sri Lanka.

15:23But now you can get them here.

15:25Romesh Ranganathan:You're putting quite a sad tone on all these stories. Then he ate some dog food. Do you know what I mean? You have to like go up at the end. Ah, right. Okay. He thought it was jujus. Yeah! Okay. Good. And I tried to eat it. I stopped it. Yeah! There we go. Funny anecdote. Grammar.

16:21Do you hear that? Sounds like breakfast is ready. Because Quaker's coming in hot with morning nutrition. 100 % whole grain oats. And a good source of fiber. To fuel the rhythm of your morning. And kickstart your day. and that sounds absolutely delicious fuel to start whatever's next quaker official sponsor

16:45Romesh Ranganathan:of fifa world cup 26 okay we could do a little um voice note yeah let's do it i don't know what i haven't listened to these cool but you still decide to go with the grandparents thing yeah okay hi i'm danian and i want to know what shanti thinks is ramish's worst habit Doesn't feel that grandparent-y, does it? No, but I think often grandparents pick up on habits, don't they? Okay, fine. But mum's not my grandparent. That's why I call her mum. What would your grandparents have thought is your worst habit? Okay, let's go. Mum, what do you think is my worst habit? You are very untidy. Right. I mean, it's my fault.

17:25I should have taught you how to keep your room tidy and everything. Wherever you go, you drop things and just leave them.

17:32Romesh Ranganathan:Yeah, it's a sign of genius, isn't it? it's not genius what messiness yeah untidiness is a sign of genius and like a really are you calling yourself you're a genius no I didn't say I was a genius I said it's a sign of a genius it's a sign what's the difference there need to be other signs like great creative output that's not happened but like google it can you google it is untidiness a sign of do you want me to google it it's actually that autism and depression come up yeah they're the first oh yeah genius untidiness is not a definitive sign of genius. Hold on, let me have a look. I say we're shandy.

18:10I like to find some dudes.

18:13Romesh Ranganathan:That's weird. That's what came up. Yeah, strange. Hold on, let me... Can I have a look? He's doing it for...

18:25I like to see his father under... If he has... If he has... this big to produce a son.

18:42Romesh Ranganathan:So what is it a sign of?

18:47Romesh Ranganathan:Depression. It's a sign of depression? Okay, that does hold up. What were we talking about? Talking about untidiness. Bad habits. Yeah, I'm very untidy. I do think that'll be the thing that Lisa leaves me for, if anything. I don't think Lisa likes it. No, she doesn't. That's what I'm saying. Yeah. She leaves everything for you to tidy up, isn't it? Yeah. It's that classic thing of like, she will like, if I leave something, she'll deliberately leave it in the hope that one day it will occur to me to tidy it up, but it never does. Then eventually she tidies it up. But I will advise you, just leave it.

19:21Let her do it. Why?

19:24Romesh Ranganathan:That's not a good partner. I'm only joking. Okay. Do you have any bad habits, Shanti? You pick your ass, don't you? You keep picking your butt and that's why your hole's so loose. So loose. So loose.

19:45What's wrong with you? You get drunk a lot, don't you? I do.

19:52Romesh Ranganathan:I get a big vodka and I only add a little juice. Little juice. No juice. So another question there. There is more. Yeah, let's have one more. A quick one. Both grandmas in the family want the kids to call them the same names. Yeah. They are both insisting on being called Nonna. The kids are confused about who's who, and it's turned into a ridiculous turf war. My question is, should parents get free reign to pick their own grandparent name, or should the parents get final say? This is a tricky one, isn't it? This is a tricky one. Isn't it? It is. Because I don't see your grandchildren. Oh, my God.

20:38Admit it. It's true.

20:40Romesh Ranganathan:What do you mean? I mean, I don't see them at all. They don't come to visit me, to give them a hug. How is this? What's going on? What do they call you? Grandma. That woman.

20:55Romesh Ranganathan:Did you choose it, Shanti? I did. Yeah. I did. Yeah, I did. What do they call you? Yeah. and they call Lisa's mum Nani. Would you have preferred Nani? No. No. So there you go, makes sense. Nani I don't like. Grandma is fine. But I could have told them the Tamil word, what's the point? When they grow up, they will change into grandmas. Yeah, so what should they call you? Appama? Appama. Yeah. Appama, yeah. I don't think the grandparents should. I think the grandparents should choose because it's them that's going to be called it, right? That's it. So I think actually, in answer to your question, I actually think what's wrong with them both being called Nona?

21:31You know?

21:31Romesh Ranganathan:No. I'm a different person altogether. I don't like that Nana. No, no, no. I'm actually referring back to the original question. Okay, right. They're saying Nonna. So the only time I think it's a problem is if they're next to each other and there's a fire, you know, because then you go, well, actually, if there's a fire, you want both of them to come, don't you? Probably, yeah. Unless the parent's shouting, save Nonna. It's like, Nonna, get away from that fire. Not you, Nonna. You can stay where you are. No, Nona. No, fuck you, Nona. You can burn. Nona! Yeah, I don't really see the problem with it, them both having the same name.

22:15Romesh Ranganathan:Although it's confusing for the children. And I'll give you an example. My mum used to call my penis Kaka. Right? Your what? Penis. She had a pet name for his... Yeah, she'd go, your Kaka. Kaka. Kaka means... She also used to call my poo caca. One day I was ill and the doctors wanted to get me checked out and so they needed a bit of my caca. And so mum said to me, we're going to need to send a bit of your caca to the doctor. I cried for about 45 minutes.

22:53Very true, that is.

22:56Romesh Ranganathan:You really thought? I thought she was going to cut off a bit of my penis and send it to the doctor. When did you realise? I don't know. It took a long time for us to figure out what, because mum's obviously like, this isn't that big a deal. I don't know what you're getting so upset about. I'd rather die than send a bit of my caca to the doctor. And then eventually we figured it out. I sent him a whole log.

23:23Romesh Ranganathan:Okay. In Sri Lanka? there was a only family doctor lives next door to us. Keep it light. So he asked he asked one of the guys uneducated guy bring some urine sample. So he filled up a juice bottle and took it. Somebody accidentally drank that urine. So these things happened in my village. So, it's not funny. She was drinking piss, but she thought that it was juice. Was juice. It wasn't juice. Okay.

24:11Romesh Ranganathan:It turned into a thing. Of course. Do you like it? Mum, are you ready for another? I'm going to do it in a special voice, okay? Mum, are you ready for another question on the edge? Of course I am ready. Do it like in that voice. Ma, are you ready for another question on the edge? Of course I'm ready.

24:36Okay,

24:42Romesh Ranganathan:this will ask you a question relating to one of the benefits of the Santander Edge credit card. This week's question is about rewards because the Santander Edge credit card comes with rewards such as cash back on your everyday spending. So my question to you is this, Mum. Mum, what's the best reward you've ever received? Having you as a son. Wow. It is true. Wow. You made me a mother, so you are very special to me. Yeah. More than Dinesh? He's the second one, right. So it's not as good as it. There you are. Okay. What about gifts? Gifts, you always give, both of you, nice gifts. Yeah, what's the best gift you've ever got?

25:19That's difficult to say. You always give nice gifts.

25:22Romesh Ranganathan:A house? Yeah. The kitchen? Yes. Top to bottom? He said to me, why you order a double oven? Double oven? For a woman living on her own? Yeah, he said, no, you don't need double oven. He only gave me one oven. I only gave you one oven? I paid for the whole kitchen. Plus, you got some extras done, by the way. Okay, here's a topic, right? The best reward I ever got is an extra invoice because mum got some extras from the handyman while he was doing the kitchen. What extra? I don't know. I got an invoice for a load of other stuff on top of the kitchen. Little dibby-dabby there, little dibby-dabby here.

26:04Romesh Ranganathan:Why did you get dibby-dabbies? I'd already bought the kitchen. I didn't agree to pay for dibby-dabbies. No, they painted the side that they broke. That's all. But the splashback I paid. Yeah. Yeah, that's it. What are you talking about? Rubbish. What about gifts you've rejected? So many things that people, I shouldn't say it, I should be grateful. God forgive me for saying it. When people give me presents because they have to give me something. Yeah, you don't like it. I believe they are wasting their money, I have to throw it. Yeah. That breaks my heart. Yeah. Okay, pay smarter with a Santander Edge credit card.
