1:57Shanthi Ranganathan:That's not true.

1:58Romesh Ranganathan:It is true. Yas Queen, slay Shanti. Why do you bother doing an episode without her? Stuff like that.

2:06Shanthi Ranganathan:You are lying. I'm not lying.

2:08Romesh Ranganathan:And can I say to this people that have got in touch, fuck you.

2:11Shanthi Ranganathan:There you are. That's the truth.

2:13Romesh Ranganathan:That is the truth, yeah. Everything I've said is the truth. Fuck you too, Ramesh. No, I'm not saying fuck you. I'm talking to the people that messaged in. I'm not saying it to you.

2:24Shanthi Ranganathan:Okay, okay, okay.

2:25Romesh Ranganathan:How's your week going, Mum?

2:27Shanthi Ranganathan:Week was fantastic. I really had a good time.

2:29Romesh Ranganathan:I wore these glasses on one of the episodes of the podcast and they're divisive. Some people don't like them. I think one of the comments said, they're such look-at-me glasses. somebody else said look like I've broken them and I've put tape on them to repair them

2:46Shanthi Ranganathan:that's how I thought

2:47Romesh Ranganathan:yeah and then when you walked in you said they don't suit my skin tone that was the first thing you said

2:53Shanthi Ranganathan:that if it is a light brown or something like that it would have looked good

2:57Romesh Ranganathan:yeah

2:58Shanthi Ranganathan:but yellow doesn't suit you

3:01Romesh Ranganathan:no I think that about you with red but you so rarely wear it

3:10Shanthi Ranganathan:thank you so much No problem, thank you. Then why the hell did you say when I walked in, you said, you look nice, you are a liar. Now you are taking the mickey out of the red colour I am wearing.

3:22Romesh Ranganathan:Yeah, I've actually been getting a lot of compliments, but when you wear something that's a bit different, sometimes you get a bit of light, do you know what I mean? You have to roll with it. A lot of people dress kind of just normcore. They just wear sort of standard basic shit, like these three monkeys. But other people, you sort of put yourself out there a little bit, don't you? These guys look like fucking... It's like doing a podcast with three NPCs.

3:46Shanthi Ranganathan:Oh, my Lord. You're a narcissist.

3:51Romesh Ranganathan:Nathicist? I think you were going to say nasty and then you went for narcissist. Do you know what a narcissist is? Yes. Go on, tell me. He's a pervert. No.

4:05Romesh Ranganathan:First of all... Pervert. Pervert. Second of all, first of all, a narcissist does not mean pervert. Second of all, what about what I said made me a pervert? I'm not calling you a pervert. You said you are a narcissist.

4:21Shanthi Ranganathan:The symptoms for narcissists, part of it is pervert. No, it isn't. Looking at small children and ladies. Pedophile, you're saying now. Kind of, kind of. You're saying I'm a kind of pedophile.

4:37Romesh Ranganathan:Anyway, I didn't mean to insult you three pedos. Shut up Rom We had a listener who sang the intro song We had a listener who sang the intro song Can you do it as a way of opening the show today? Like sing the intro song

4:52Shanthi Ranganathan:What's that intro song? I don't even know

4:55Romesh Ranganathan:It goes It's the Romesh Ranga Nathan Show Oh shut up Romesh Okay so go on

5:03Shanthi Ranganathan:It's the Romesh Ranga Nathan Show Shut up, Romance. Yay!

5:18It's the Romance Rangar Nathan Show.

5:24Shanthi Ranganathan:With me, Shanti.

5:26Romesh Ranganathan:On Monday, we had legendary documentary maker, journalist, podcaster and narcissist, Louis Theroux on the show. Mum, have you watched any of his stuff? No. He investigated crystal meth, Nazis and prostitution, which is your three favourite things. I'm surprised. So he does documentaries about like contentious stuff and he talks to people that have got extreme views and stuff. If you were going to do a dark documentary, what world would you like to look into?

5:58Shanthi Ranganathan:Pedos.

5:58Romesh Ranganathan:Pedos. You'd like to look into pedos. Pedos. Why?

6:01Shanthi Ranganathan:Because I hate that. That's why. I'm going to look after the children. So I hate pedos. Pedos. Shall I spell it for you?

6:09Romesh Ranganathan:Go for it.

Read the full transcript

6:10Shanthi Ranganathan:No, I don't know the spelling. No, exactly.

6:11Romesh Ranganathan:That's what I thought. I've got no idea what you offered.

6:23Romesh Ranganathan:Louis Theroux does this thing where he sort of, he asks a question and then just pauses for ages. And then you kind of...

6:30Shanthi Ranganathan:You have to repeat.

6:31Romesh Ranganathan:You don't have to repeat, no. But it just makes the person feel uncomfortable and keep talking.

6:36Shanthi Ranganathan:Is it?

6:36Romesh Ranganathan:Yeah.

6:37Shanthi Ranganathan:Do the impression then?

6:39Romesh Ranganathan:So, you don't think your son calls you enough? Do you?

6:48Shanthi Ranganathan:Do you want me to answer that?

6:49Romesh Ranganathan:Yeah, we're doing a role play now.

6:52Shanthi Ranganathan:No, you don't.

6:53Romesh Ranganathan:I'm Louis Theroux in this. What the hell is that Louis Theroux? It's a role play. And then Will will probably put us in a Sri Lankan mother's kitchen and put some music underneath it. As is the way we do it on this.

7:11Shanthi Ranganathan:Okay, go ahead.

7:14Romesh Ranganathan:So, I can't really do his voice, unfortunately.

7:17Shanthi Ranganathan:Try, try.

7:18Romesh Ranganathan:So, you don't think your son calls you enough, do you?

7:24Shanthi Ranganathan:No, he doesn't.

7:26Romesh Ranganathan:It's harder than it looks. Okay, thank you to our listeners and viewers for your support. Remember, you can always shoot us a text or leave us a cheeky voice note on 07731 623 355. Tinko, tinko. Or do it the old-fashioned way. Send us an email at podcast at rangaby.com. We are still at one listener email and counting. Fuck, is that true?

7:47Louis Theroux:Loads of people use the WhatsApp, but they don't email.

7:50Romesh Ranganathan:One email? Fuck my fuck. Why'd you put that in there?

7:59Louis Theroux:But the WhatsApp goes nuts. Yeah.

8:02Romesh Ranganathan:We want more voice notes more than email.

8:04Louis Theroux:Yeah, exactly.

8:04Romesh Ranganathan:We're training more than audience. All right. Yeah, fine. So emails are out of old fashion now.

8:09Shanthi Ranganathan:Out of fashion, yeah.

8:11Romesh Ranganathan:Thank God I don't know how to do it.

8:13Shanthi Ranganathan:I know.

8:13Romesh Ranganathan:It has come and gone without you actually being able to do it. That's weird, isn't it?

8:18Shanthi Ranganathan:I'm thankful to God.

8:20Romesh Ranganathan:Yeah. She says, I'm going to wait this out. I'm never going to learn.

8:24Shanthi Ranganathan:Facebook is going. Pardon? Is that true? Have you never sent any email? She has sent an email, but she needs assistance. Not assistance.

8:32Romesh Ranganathan:Well, you can't do it on your own, can you?

8:32Shanthi Ranganathan:When something goes wrong, I'm stuck.

8:34Romesh Ranganathan:Yeah, she can't do it on her own. But she can do a full detailed list of Christmas ingredients. Okay, this week we are answering more of your questions. Are you ready, Mum?

8:43Louis Theroux:I am ready.

8:44Romesh Ranganathan:Let's fucking do this. Our first question is from Saraya.

8:48Louis Theroux:Hello, Ramesh and Shanti and all the team. I hope that you're really well. I would like to ask your advice on a dilemma I have regarding my name, which is spelt S-O-R-A-Y-A. I've always introduced myself as Soraya, but a little while ago I sent an email to the podcast hosted by Justin Long and his brother Christian, which is a podcast called Life is Short. And Justin got distracted whilst reading out my email and basically said that my name sounded like a disease. Psoriasis. and at the time i just i brushed it off but more recently at a comedy gig the compare spoke to me and he made the same joke so now i'm wondering whether when people hear my name they are just being polite and not saying anything or whether this is something that most people think when i introduce myself and i was thinking that maybe i should change the where I pronounce my name to Soraya.

9:53Louis Theroux:I'd love to know what your thoughts are on this. Love you both. I look forward to your reply.

9:59Romesh Ranganathan:Thank you so much, Soraya, for your wonderful voice note. Mum, do you have any thoughts? Soraya is worried that people are thinking about the disease.

10:08Shanthi Ranganathan:When the parents are given the name, they must be meaning on it. Yeah, sure. That's why they have given it. It is upsetting. But if you change the spelling...

10:18Romesh Ranganathan:She doesn't want to change the spelling. She just wants to pronounce it differently. In the same way that we did. You know, we're not really Ranganathan, are we?

10:26Shanthi Ranganathan:No, Ranganathan.

10:27Romesh Ranganathan:Ranganathan.

10:28Shanthi Ranganathan:Yeah.

10:29Romesh Ranganathan:But we've sort of changed it. For the reason... Why do we say Ranganathan, by the way? Because I frequently get told I can't pronounce my own name.

10:36Shanthi Ranganathan:People do pronounce it Ranganathan. But it's Ranganathan, isn't it? Ranganathan.

10:41Romesh Ranganathan:Yeah, so why don't we say Ranganathan?

10:44Shanthi Ranganathan:If you want to, I'm not stopping you.

10:45Romesh Ranganathan:It's a bit fucking late now and it's sort of rebranding.

10:49Shanthi Ranganathan:then why are you asking the stupid question i'm not i'm just i'm i'm not asking you because

10:53Romesh Ranganathan:you know that's up for debate but the question i'm asking is yeah why did we go ranganathan the whole time don't blame me there's people we are living in england some of them can't

11:04Shanthi Ranganathan:pronounce ranganathan okay or nathan nathan it's easier for them but if somebody said oh hello

11:10Romesh Ranganathan:shanti you'd go no it's shanti yeah so why do we allow shanti is peace so the i have a meaning it's one of the do you know what when you're a kid you learn different things shanti meaning peace was the first time i grasped irony because you don't consider when i say something

11:27Shanthi Ranganathan:you don't listen no oh this stupid bitch is saying something so i don't want to listen yeah yeah why

11:33Romesh Ranganathan:have we settled with ranganathan started calling you right when you say what's your name ranganathan

11:38Shanthi Ranganathan:so ranganathan yeah ranganathan so we just settled with it yeah okay i mean yeah that has been called

11:44Romesh Ranganathan:runga runga tang sometimes yeah yeah but that's because he kept picking his ass in the woods

11:49Shanthi Ranganathan:oh god have you seen it have i seen his ass is that what you're asking yeah i think yeah you

11:58Romesh Ranganathan:did you did all right mom this is such a weird reveal

12:05Romesh Ranganathan:okay i didn't some some kids see their parents naked a lot don't they do you mean like some

12:10Shanthi Ranganathan:people are more freer about that sort of thing yes i never saw you guys some lady some people they walk around the house naked why because nobody wants to see the ding down no but the

12:25Romesh Ranganathan:point is is that some people want you to be kind of less hung up about body and and we never saw you naked and dinish and i both have got severe uh i would say not severe quite bad body self conscious issues so maybe that could have played a part in that i'm not i'm not having i'm just saying some people are just free and accepting aren't they i only saw it with dad when he went

12:48Shanthi Ranganathan:into the forest but never at home never at home no but so many other people have seen his ass oh my

12:57Romesh Ranganathan:Oh my gosh.

13:01Shanthi Ranganathan:So many of them. Shall I give the names? No, Jesus. I feel like giving the fucking names.

13:09Romesh Ranganathan:No, don't give the fucking names, all right? Just leave it. Anyway, we need to answer Soraya's problem.

13:17Shanthi Ranganathan:Yeah, sure, sure.

13:18Romesh Ranganathan:So she basically...

13:19Shanthi Ranganathan:I feel for her because...

13:20Romesh Ranganathan:People are saying that her name sounds like psoriasis.

13:22Shanthi Ranganathan:That means that it's a kind of skin disease.

13:26Romesh Ranganathan:Correct, yeah.

13:27Shanthi Ranganathan:I don't like people calling. They don't know how to pronounce the name. What she can do, don't mind me saying this, it doesn't pronounce like that, please call me.

13:37Romesh Ranganathan:No, but you're misunderstanding the issue. Her name is Soraya.

13:42Shanthi Ranganathan:Soraya, yeah.

13:43Romesh Ranganathan:Her problem is...

13:45Shanthi Ranganathan:The spelling.

13:46Romesh Ranganathan:No. The problem is it sounds like psoriasis, right?

13:50Shanthi Ranganathan:Doesn't sound like that.

13:51Romesh Ranganathan:Sounds pretty like it. No. Soraya doesn't sound like psoriasis.

13:57Shanthi Ranganathan:SIS is not there, no? It's only SIS.

13:58Romesh Ranganathan:Okay, thank you for pointing out the difference, yeah. But it still sounds a bit like it, doesn't it? Yeah.

14:03Shanthi Ranganathan:Why are you adding the damn thing into that?

14:06Romesh Ranganathan:They're not adding the thing. What they're saying is it reminds them of it.

14:10Shanthi Ranganathan:Reminds of who? Her. Her?

14:15Romesh Ranganathan:Fuck me.

14:20Romesh Ranganathan:I'm having an aneurysm. Soraya, the name Soraya reminds people of psoriasis.

14:27Shanthi Ranganathan:I think they, no, they're dumb. Yeah, that's the whole point of the thing. No, dumb idiots there.

14:33Romesh Ranganathan:Okay, fine.

14:34Shanthi Ranganathan:People who don't like her, they think like that. But it doesn't sound like that. It does. My darling, it's fine. Let them go. Just flag it off. Okay? They're fuckers.

14:43Romesh Ranganathan:They're fuckers. Okay, sorry. I hope that helps. They're fuckers. To my mind, this is a blessing and a curse. You know, you're frequently...

14:51Shanthi Ranganathan:It's not a curse, man. Don't say that.

14:54Romesh Ranganathan:Can I... I've let you do your answer, okay? 20 minutes of which was you just trying to figure out what the fuck the initial problem was. I'm now trying to offer my little bit of advice.

15:04Shanthi Ranganathan:I understood what she said. Okay. Yeah, why are you making me a right idiot? I'm not. I understood perfectly. Can I just...

15:09Romesh Ranganathan:Particularly spiky today. I'm not.

15:12Shanthi Ranganathan:I'm not. I'm calm.

15:13Romesh Ranganathan:Okay. You're calm.

15:14Shanthi Ranganathan:Yeah.

15:16Romesh Ranganathan:Genuinely, we're not on TV. how bad is it for Mumtous Bunnazout? I actually think it would be helpful.

15:24Louis Theroux:Would you like some cake? Okay, let's address this.

15:27Romesh Ranganathan:Can I give Soraya the advice

15:30Shanthi Ranganathan:and then we'll move on to this situation?

15:33Romesh Ranganathan:I'm sure the monkeys wanted me to reference at the top and I haven't done. They're all sitting there like, when's he going to say? Soraya is a blessing and a curse. One, it reminds people of psoriasis, but two, it helps people remember your name. and that's a really useful thing. So actually, I would embrace it. The fact that it reminds me of psoriasis so much, who gives a shit, you know? Like mum said, flag it off.

15:58Shanthi Ranganathan:Yeah, flag it off. Flag it off. If they said something bad about you.

16:01Romesh Ranganathan:Yeah, just flag it off.

16:03Shanthi Ranganathan:And send a curse back to them like that. Boom. Hadouken! Have it, yeah. That's it. Fuck you. Fuck you too. No, I'm not too.

16:22Romesh Ranganathan:Okay.

16:23Shanthi Ranganathan:Okay.

16:23Romesh Ranganathan:Why is there a Victoria sponge cake in the middle of the room? We just thought it'd be nice for Shanti to have something because she always brings us food. That's sweet.

16:32Shanthi Ranganathan:That's all you have to say.

16:33Romesh Ranganathan:It's sweet, isn't it? Somebody spend time. Is it vegan?

16:37Shanthi Ranganathan:Yeah, it is.

16:40Romesh Ranganathan:It's not. Can I tell you something? I'm teeing you up for the punchline that you're obviously very excited about. why have you got a whole fucking Victoria sponge cake for mum?

16:49Louis Theroux:Because she brings in mutton rolls.

16:51Romesh Ranganathan:Right

16:52Shanthi Ranganathan:I brought you some aubergine curry.

16:55Romesh Ranganathan:Yeah, today, by the way just for the benefit of the listeners mum has made a tragic, pathetic attempt to claw back some favour because she absolutely fucked me in the eyes by bringing 20 mutton rolls and no vegetarian rolls and now she's gone oh darling, I brought you some aubergine curry.

17:13Shanthi Ranganathan:You look like a monkey I look like a monkey. I don't do that. Do I? Darling, I'm... No, I said, Rami, I brought you some curries. You didn't do that. Did I? No, I said, I brought you some curries. You said, don't talk to me like that or something like that. I didn't say that.

17:29Romesh Ranganathan:I did not say that. You said too little, too late.

17:34Shanthi Ranganathan:Ah, too little, too late. You said the way you appreciate it.

17:37Romesh Ranganathan:I was joking.

17:38Shanthi Ranganathan:Were you? Yeah. No, when you talk to me, keep the joke aside, okay?

17:43Romesh Ranganathan:All right.

17:43Shanthi Ranganathan:I know you are a comedian. Yeah. But don't play games with me, okay? Smack you on the ass.

17:49Romesh Ranganathan:What's happened to you today?

17:51Shanthi Ranganathan:Nothing.

17:53Romesh Ranganathan:You're being so feisty.

17:55Shanthi Ranganathan:What about you, Romy? What about me? You do exactly the same, darling.

17:58Romesh Ranganathan:What do you mean I do exactly the same?

17:59Shanthi Ranganathan:Monkeys, monkeys, and all sorts of names. I'm only talking about the... I'm talking about the fucking chimps over there.

18:05Romesh Ranganathan:I don't like it. What's it got to do with you? These fucking NPC gorillas over here. I'm just talking about them. I think Shanti feels quite protective of us. Yeah, I am. I am. I love people. You're like pets.

18:17Shanthi Ranganathan:Oh, God.

18:23Shanthi Ranganathan:You're a duster.

18:24Romesh Ranganathan:Actually, somebody messaged in about you guys saying they sound like they're really hot, don't they?

18:29Shanthi Ranganathan:They are hot.

18:30Romesh Ranganathan:I only know this because you texted me, Ben. Oh, yeah, I do remember. Because you screen grabbed it and WhatsAppped it to me. That's the only reason it came to my attention. So it's weird that you paused there as if you didn't know that happened.

18:45Louis Theroux:Yeah, that was nice.

18:46Romesh Ranganathan:Yeah. Mum, what do you think? For me, they are everything. These three are everything?

18:55Shanthi Ranganathan:Yeah. Wasting time sitting there and listening to me and you. They are so important to me, Mum.

19:04Romesh Ranganathan:I think that's why a lot of people say, why does this podcast work? And it's because we've got different energies. haven't we? Like we sit in opposition. To you, they're everything. To me, they're nothing.

19:18Louis Theroux:I've known you for like almost 10 years.

19:20Romesh Ranganathan:I know. It's mad, isn't it? I'm going to have to see an osteopath about my back. 10 years of carrying. Okay.

19:29Louis Theroux:Spring is here, and there's a whole new way to chai at Starbucks that's made perfect for you. Choose your sweetness, dial it up, or keep things light. Add a touch of pistachio, a hint of strawberry or vanilla, or make it a spring classic with lavender, because this season, there's endless ways to chai at Starbucks.

19:50Romesh Ranganathan:So I hope that helps. Now, Mum, do you want a bit of Victoria's Sponge Cake?

19:54Shanthi Ranganathan:I'd love to have some, yeah.

19:55Romesh Ranganathan:Okay, do you want me to cut you some?

19:56Shanthi Ranganathan:Yes, please.

19:58Romesh Ranganathan:Where'd you get it from?

20:00Shanthi Ranganathan:He just told you.

20:02Romesh Ranganathan:You made it? Who made it? A bit more Georgie than me. Georgie made this? Yeah. Is that a big mum?

20:08Shanthi Ranganathan:No! Tiny bit.

20:10Romesh Ranganathan:This? The cream's not vegan.

20:12Shanthi Ranganathan:But what do you think? I'm a gorilla. Smaller than that, man. Ah, that's it. That's it.

20:16Romesh Ranganathan:Do you like Victoria's sponge?

20:17Shanthi Ranganathan:I love my favourite. Really? Yes, it is.

20:21Romesh Ranganathan:She's so full of shit, mum. Oh, God. Ah, I could slice that, Rom. Yeah, yeah. The top's icing sugar. That is vegan.

20:29Shanthi Ranganathan:Yeah.

20:29Romesh Ranganathan:All right, OK. I'll do a line of that then.

20:31Shanthi Ranganathan:Icing.

20:32Romesh Ranganathan:Shall we hear the next voice note? This is from Dima and Satari. Yes, I'd love to. I'd love to. This is delicious.

20:37Shanthi Ranganathan:Hi, Aunty Shanti.

20:39Louis Theroux:It's Simma. And Sathari here. Holidaying in Sri Lanka and having a great time. Can you tell us of a story of when you had an adventure on holiday, naughty or nice? We love the podcast and listen religiously. Ramesh, call your mum.

20:56Romesh Ranganathan:What the fuck is going on?

20:58Louis Theroux:That's brilliant. Woo-hoo! Woo-hoo!

21:07Romesh Ranganathan:Mum, what's been your best holiday? When did you...

21:11Shanthi Ranganathan:I enjoyed coming with you on 2015. Thoroughly enjoyed. 11 years ago. 11 years ago.

21:18Romesh Ranganathan:That was not a holiday. That was a travel show. A travel show.

21:20Shanthi Ranganathan:But I haven't been on holiday to Sri Lanka. I haven't had a holiday for... I college, when I went with Ben and filmed things.

21:32Romesh Ranganathan:Okay, but let's talk about Asian Provocateur, though.

21:35Shanthi Ranganathan:No, yeah, yeah. That was filming, okay? Since then, I haven't had holiday, Rami. I remember you were telling me, I'll take you to Channel Tunnel.

21:47Romesh Ranganathan:I'll take you to the Channel Tunnel, yeah. Send you back on a small boat.

21:50Shanthi Ranganathan:I pretended you haven't mentioned it.

21:55Shanthi Ranganathan:To France, anyway.

21:57Romesh Ranganathan:Get your process there.

22:00Shanthi Ranganathan:then you pretended that you haven't mentioned

22:03Romesh Ranganathan:when did I say I was going to take you to the channel tunnel

22:05Shanthi Ranganathan:shall we go one day oh Eurostar Eurostar you forgot?

22:10Romesh Ranganathan:I did forget yeah I forgot I said that

22:15Romesh Ranganathan:we'll do that I do want to take it on holiday we could turn it into a podcast you guys on the channel tunnel you guys around France you're looking at me like that's terrible it is a good idea Did anybody here used to think when they first sent out to the Channel Tunnel that it'd be made of glass and you'd be able to see the fish and stuff? 100%. It's just dark. It's just dark, isn't it? Yeah, quite an overwhelming experience. Yeah, I thought it was going to be like, under the sea, Sebastian the crab sort of joining you by the window. You're going to Paris.

22:50Romesh Ranganathan:I genuinely thought I was going to see some fish, but it didn't happen. Because you remember that Jaws 3? Do you remember Jaws 3?

22:56Shanthi Ranganathan:Yes.

22:56Romesh Ranganathan:It was the water part. Not the water part. The sea one.

22:59Shanthi Ranganathan:Underneath you can see.

23:00Romesh Ranganathan:Yeah. So I thought it was going to be like that.

23:03Shanthi Ranganathan:Okay. But it's not, is it? No, it's not. Well, you've not been on it. I haven't been on it because nobody takes me. There are people offered, but I'm not taking it.

23:11Romesh Ranganathan:Who offered you?

23:12Shanthi Ranganathan:Why do you want to know?

23:14Romesh Ranganathan:It's just conversation, isn't it? Men.

23:16Shanthi Ranganathan:Men.

23:16Romesh Ranganathan:Right. Which men?

23:17Shanthi Ranganathan:They said, oh, I'll come with you. I'll give you a company. But I don't want to go. Why?

23:22Romesh Ranganathan:Do you not think you should go on a date?

23:24Shanthi Ranganathan:I don't want to go on a date. No, Rameshi. When I look at a man, I know I will like him.

23:31Romesh Ranganathan:Yeah.

23:31Shanthi Ranganathan:Yeah, if I tell you the description whom I like...

23:35Romesh Ranganathan:Yeah, don't do this big dick thing again, though.

23:38Shanthi Ranganathan:That's rubbish. Okay. Dick will come and go. So... I call it... Dick is a brainless git.

23:47Romesh Ranganathan:Dick is a brainless git? Yes. Okay.

23:49Shanthi Ranganathan:Goes everywhere.

23:50Romesh Ranganathan:Yeah. So, forget that.

23:52Shanthi Ranganathan:I'm not going to mention that anymore.

23:54Romesh Ranganathan:Well, I think that ship has sold.

23:55Shanthi Ranganathan:The way they talk.

23:57Romesh Ranganathan:Yeah.

23:57Shanthi Ranganathan:The way they look after you.

23:59Romesh Ranganathan:How do you want them to talk?

24:01Shanthi Ranganathan:Kindly.

24:02Romesh Ranganathan:Yeah.

24:03Shanthi Ranganathan:Yeah? You, some men do. I won't mention, you won't like it. They talk to you, but their eyes are somewhere else. What do you mean?

24:12Romesh Ranganathan:Mum, I was born with it. Fuck.

24:15Shanthi Ranganathan:I am not talking about it. Do you?

25:16Shanthi Ranganathan:Nothing.

25:17Romesh Ranganathan:Okay. I don't have any naughty stories from Holiday René. You did? No, I don't. They're asking for naughty stories. In Sri Lanka, what naughty? That's what they're asking for.

25:29Shanthi Ranganathan:Yeah, I haven't had any naughty thing there.

25:48Shanthi Ranganathan:What ping pong show? Ah, yes, yes, yes, yes. I went to a red light area. Very interesting. Right. I saw, I sat on the, a lot of Americans were there and so many other country people. They were performing sex. I did see. And other thing they did.

26:55Shanthi Ranganathan:You asked me. I'm telling you the truth to imagine.

26:57Romesh Ranganathan:I don't think if you give me a thousand guesses, I would have guessed that you and Dad paid to go and see a sex show where a woman smoked a cigarette with a pom-pom.

27:06Shanthi Ranganathan:Dad wants to see.

27:08Romesh Ranganathan:Why would you go with Dad for that? Were you interested in seeing that?

28:28Romesh Ranganathan:Have we got any cigarettes here that we can put them out in my eyes and ears? Will, when you do the edit, can you cut that out of both the podcast and my brain? you were the one asked me I know I didn't know it was going to go I feel fucking sick thank you so much for your message you've given me the gift of potential therapy and a little birdie is telling me that Dimra has recently celebrated her 40th birthday so happy birthday to you happy birthday okay now we're going to do something different now I'm going to a special segment of the show brought to you by Labara Mobile which is fitting because apparently I don't call my mum enough.

29:13Romesh Ranganathan:I do call you, though, mum, don't I?

29:15Shanthi Ranganathan:No, Romesh. Why are you lying?

29:18Romesh Ranganathan:I'm going to rattle through every single time I've ever called you. But I do call you, mum.

29:23Shanthi Ranganathan:Last week and week before, did you call me? Did you call me? I did send texts. What did you say? Your show is good and, you know, I loved it, mum. Then only you will reply. But you don't call, oh, I want to talk to mum. No. Where? The love is gone or it's empty?

29:40Romesh Ranganathan:a bit of both I'd say anyway the point is mum because I'm away a lot it's good to be able to get in touch with you it's nice to check in isn't it

Apollo. He rang me. I was sitting there. I was struggling at that time. I was working away and he said, Mum, you won't believe how much I got.

30:46Shanthi Ranganathan:I received the money. So that made me so happy. My son is rich now.

30:53Romesh Ranganathan:Was it a lot? Was it a lot? Well, I mean, I sent some your way, didn't I? Just relax a little bit. Let's get the money chat. Do you want me to say how much? No.

31:07Louis Theroux:Six, five figures?

31:09Romesh Ranganathan:Mum, mum, stop. Stop. Okay. Anyway, it was very exciting to be able to call you because I've been broke, couldn't pay the bills. I knew straight away. You couldn't pay the bills.

31:20Shanthi Ranganathan:He made it. And you wouldn't believe how many times I prayed and tears coming because he worked so hard as a mother and he's struggling, I'm struggling. When is it going to end? That call made me so happy.

31:37Romesh Ranganathan:And I remember the time, one of my favourite calls from you, is I sat at home and he called me up, and it was a bit of a funny line, and he said, Ramesh, how are you, darling? I've just been to see this incredible show. I don't want to give you any details. Bye.

31:55Romesh Ranganathan:Look, those are some ridiculous examples of whether it's calling your mum, your kids, or your mates. You want to make it simple and reliable. And Labara has reliable coverage, great customer service, rated 4.8 on Trustpilot and plans starting from just£5 a month. What's even better is that every April when the big networks bump up your bill for the exact same plan, Labara keeps your price exactly the same. Plus, they've got a 30-day rolling contract, so you've got a bit of flexibility if you need it. They're a which-recommended provider and use Switch's most popular network for three years running.

How much do you really want to know about your parents' holiday antics? Shanthi shares far too much, leaving Romesh desperate to "edit" certain images out of his brain. They also talk about this week’s guest, legendary documentary maker Louis Theroux, as Shanthi reveals the surprisingly dark topics she’d cover if she followed in his footsteps.

Plus, Romesh hits back at criticism of his glasses – and Shanthi recalls the moment he rang her to say he’d "made it" in comedy.
