In short

The episode is a Thursday chat with Shanti Ranganathan where they play “Misquoted, Mum” (guessing which of five quotes Shanti said), then take an audience question about whether to join a boyfriend’s family skiing holiday. They also discuss skiing culture, TV streaming recommendations, and include ad reads.

Guests

Shanti Ranganathan (Romesh Ranganathan’s mother; in-studio guest and the “Mum” for the game). No other human guests appear; an anonymous listener provides a voice-note question.

Key claims

Shanti dislikes the scoring format of “Misquoted, Mum.” The skiing listener should avoid pressure to ski due to double hip surgery and should have the boyfriend manage the situation with his parents. Skiing is framed as a family tradition that some people assume everyone must do.

Notable examples

“Learn to ski in a day” gift despite hip concerns; suggestion to go to the holiday but rest and only try baby slopes without obligation; TV picks include Succession, Grey’s Anatomy, Below Deck, and Louis Theroux.

Bold kick of cherry. Hey yo Mr. Pibb. Amazon presents Jeff vs. Taco Truck Salsa. Whether it's Verde, Roja, or the orange one. For Jeff, trying any salsa is like playing Russian roulette with a flamethrower. Luckily, Jeff saved with Amazon and stocked up on antacids, ginger tea, and milk. Habanero? More like habanero, yes. 3:19With me Shanti

3:22Romesh Ranganathan:On Monday we had comedian Sarah Pascoe on the show Friend of mine Yes Super clever Super funny She didn't really like our misquoted game That's the first one you got fully correct actually Thank you We've got two to go I don't care about the scores just so you know i'm not invested in this is a scoring exercise okay we will

3:51i mean we will do the other two but no i really i like i'm enjoying the game but not this this points element sure

4:01Romesh Ranganathan:this is quite a big deal to us okay i don't know if you heard but we have like a jingle for it i There's a jingle that you've forgotten. Do you know what that is? No.

4:15Romesh Ranganathan:Have you ever watched a Monday episode of the podcast? I do. Which ones have you watched? Everything. Which ones in particular? I miss a few things. Whatever I miss. Which one have you watched? Name one that you've watched. Do you like the Louis III one? Don't give her names. Which one have you watched? No, I can't. I can't remember mine. I do watch YouTube. Have you watched any of them? I do. You only watch the Thursday episodes, don't you? No. True.

4:50Because I relate.

4:57Romesh Ranganathan:Anyway, play a game called Miss Quoted, Mum, where there's five quotes. Three of them are true, two are false. Okay. Okay. I love that. So we're playing this with you today. Is that right? Oh, look at that. Georgie with the car. Yay. Give it up for Georgie Green, everybody.

5:16Romesh Ranganathan:It's misquoted. These are things you either said or not, and you have to guess whether you said it or not, okay? All right. Here's your first one. You have to say true or false. Did you say this? One day, son. Shall I do it in your accent? Yes, please. One day, son, I'll tell you who helped me with the list. Did you say that or not? I didn't. That is correct You did not say that I'll give you the actual quote I can't tell you who helped me Why the fuck do you want to know? Who helped you? I can't tell you who helped me Why the fuck you won't know? So that was good Mum, who helped you with the list?

5:53Romesh Ranganathan:I won't tell you Just tell us now It's been enough time Why do you want to know? This is like somebody asking my age Did somebody help you with the list? No one helped her No one helped me Who asked you? No, that's the matter. Yeah, that's the truth. Nobody helped me. Nobody helped you? Yeah. Bullshit. Bullshit to you? Bullshit to you? Shit to you? Shit to you.

6:16Why the hell you want to know? Because somebody helped you. Because you know, you don't trust me. You don't want me to learn. Oh, this bitch doesn't know a thing. Yeah? I hate that.

6:29Romesh Ranganathan:Okay, fine. But you didn't do the list on your own? I did. You didn't? I did. You didn't? I did. Who helped you? You're wasting the time. Say something useful. Okay, here's your next one. Take them out for a walk. Give them a lot of work. End of the day, they'll be dead tired. I did say that. Yeah. It's true. Yeah. You were giving sleep advice to Mother Justine with a five-month-old child. Yeah. Keep them active. Give them a lot of work. End of the day, they will be dead tired. Time to go to bed. Mum, how advanced do you think this five-month-old is? Yeah. It does work. Okay, Mum, here's your next one.

7:02Romesh Ranganathan:you've got your two for two so far very impressive Romy is my best friend I can talk to him about anything did you say that or not no I didn't you said the real quote is he's my best friend I can talk to him about anything and you were talking about Ben

7:20he's my best friend I can talk to him about everything

7:24Romesh Ranganathan:it's true I remember having that lovely breakfast with you this year I know, I know. My son buggered off. He didn't come there. What do you mean? Where was I? Where did I go when you were having breakfast? I mean, you were avoiding my... He told me and said, Bye. This is cool to talk about a new topic. Bye.

7:47You are not my fucking friend. You are my son. Okay?

7:52Romesh Ranganathan:Ben is my friend. Ben's your best friend. He is. Ben Green, that Ben, is your best friend. Shall I tell you something? Please. When I have pain, when I want to discuss something, I have spoken to Ben. Yeah. Not over the phone, when I meet him in person. Yeah. And he listen, he never tell anybody. Right. Those are the type of people I need and I trust. That's not my question. My question is, is Ben your best friend? He is. Your best friend in the world is Ben? My best friend in the world, yes. Is Ben? Yeah. I'm also your best friend, so why are you being... You're not my best friend. What do you mean?

8:26Romesh Ranganathan:How are you my best friend? Why are you getting jealous? Why are you getting jealous? How are you my best friend? Who are you putting up there? Well, actual friends. Your top, I would say genuinely. Yeah. Who is your best friend? This is horrible. John. Who is your best friend? Sorry, Andrew John. John. Why not? I've known him for like 10. I've got quite a good rapport with the, you know the woman in the boots, opposite. Um, like you're definitely like double digits. You're not higher than double digits. I can't work out this. If this is a bit, it's horrible. Why? Genuinely horrible. Is mum your best friend?

9:10Romesh Ranganathan:Yes. Fuck you. That's no, he is. Mum, if somebody says to you, who's your best friend? You say it's Shanti Ranganate. Is that true? No one asks that sort of thing. Yeah, but if they do ask that. Even if he said no, he won't say, I don't mind. But he's my best friend. That's the point. And mum's your best friend. Yes. Mum's your best friend. Well, I'd say you were up there, obviously. Were? Well, now I don't know because of what's happened. We are friends, though. Yeah, but you're like, I'm not even top ten. I know the boots thing was a joke, but it felt like there was, I don't know, unless the whole thing's a joke and afterwards you say.

9:50Romesh Ranganathan:First of all, what I would say to you, do you really think I've got a ranking system of everybody? you won't believe Romy I have told Ben so many secrets right which I had gone through yeah he kept it a secret so would you say Ben's the only one that knows who helped you with the list why I bring that that again okay why do you want to know why I just want to know the truth why did she not like the game what game I wasn't for that why did she not like the game misquoted she doesn't like the scoring system yeah okay mommy ready although didn't somebody comment on one of the youtube videos misquoted as a dead format yeah we don't have to talk about every comment we can move on what does it mean dead format 50-50 as in it's shit the podcast is shit no I mean I'm sure some people do think that but this particular feature is shit misquoted k-pop demon hunters haja boys breakfast meal and hunt tricks meal have just dropped at mcdonald's they're calling this a battle for the fans what do you say to that roomie It's not a battle.

10:54So glad the Saja boys could take breakfast and give our meal the rest of the day. It is an honor to share. No, it's our honor. It is our larger honor. No, really. Stop. You can really feel the respect in this battle. Pick a meal to pick a side. And participate in McDonald's while supplies last. 11:44Romesh Ranganathan:it's a great way of rattling through different topics that we might not have caught up on in the podcast yeah I know you're absolutely right Okay, here's your next one, Mum. Yes. Everybody's doing a podcast. Everybody's doing a podcast now. It's true. I did say that. How does she know this? Has she been briefed? No. It says here talking about Keith Lemon. That can't be true. That is true. Do you even know who Keith Lemon is? Yes. Let's hear it, please. I was nominated for Best Entertainment Performance for Asian Provocator in 2015. Yeah. Snubbed. Keith Lemon won. Yeah, yeah. Yeah, where is he now?

12:24Romesh Ranganathan:He's doing a podcast. He's doing a podcast, actually. Everybody's doing podcasts now. Oh, fucking hell.

12:32Romesh Ranganathan:Okay, you're four for four. Here's your last one, Mum. While the lecturer is giving the lecture, you'll be thinking about the sex. Shall I do it this way or this way or horse ride? I definitely said that. You did say that. Discussing how sex can damage the brain. Damage the brain. I'm still saying it. Yeah, you are. How do you think touching a girl fucks up your brain? While the lecturer is giving you a lecture, you'll be thinking about the sex. Oh, shall I do this way? Shall I do that way? Or this way? Or horse ride?

13:06Romesh Ranganathan:This is unbelievable. And that was Misquoted. Eat a dick, dumb shits. Oh, no, sorry. That's not true. Okay, it's time for audience interaction. We love hearing from you, don't we, mum? Of course. Thank you for all your messages and voice, Nwatt. Let us know if you want to remain anonymous. Go on, pick up the phone. The number is 07731623355, or you can email podcast at rangaby.com. How many emails have we got now? I think we're up to two now. Okay, mum, are you ready? Yes. We've got a question from Anonymous. Okay. Hi, Ramesh and Shanti. Hello. So I just need some advice. advice um it's about my boyfriend and his family uh and skiing now skiing i've never skied before i don't want to ski i had double hip surgery last year i don't think it would be great for my hips like just not very good um me and my boyfriend have been together for about two years now and so they're going on a skiing holiday this christmas or this winter coming um and it's going to cost about two thousand pounds right so they've asked me if I want to go I've said no like um also more context I'm just out of university um I've been working for about six months now I'm trying to save for a house um I need a new car as well so like I'm trying to save up um and the skiing holiday is about is going to cost about two thousand pounds ish um so I've said I don't want to go but they keep asking me and every time they ask me I say no and they ask why and I say that I'm saving um and that I can't ski so there's been a lot of back and forth and recently I told my boyfriend that if people kept asking me about skiing I was going to get really annoyed um to which he told his parents and then they told me that they heard about that but continued to ask me about skiing and the more they asked the more annoyed I got and the less I actually wanted to go anyway um and for my birthday they which was like two weeks ago they got me uh learn to ski in a day lessons um which I just thought like whether I learned to ski or not that's not the that's not the issue here the issue is kind of that it's going to cost two thousand pounds and that I just had double hip surgery um so i guess the advice i'm looking for is how do i explain to them that i don't want to go and that i probably won't go regardless of being able to ski or not because i've i've told them multiple times but it kind of just keeps coming up and they keep asking um so yeah any advice would be great well i think my first bit of advice um maybe if you want to try and raise the money for a ski holiday, you could try starting a podcast and that sounded like your first episode.

16:03Romesh Ranganathan:It's the longest voice note we've ever had. No, thank you so much for your voice note. I think there's been a few... I don't think your boyfriend has helped the situation. In my opinion, it's one of these things where, you know when families have grown up skiing? It's just a bit annoying, isn't it? They sort of assume everybody should ski and stuff like that. it's like skiing is not like swimming we don't all have to do it you know um i think uh i think you've built up a little bit of a negative uh relationship with this skiing um i think that your boyfriend and his family should not be pushing you to ski if you don't want to but i think that you've got a situation where actually a positive thing has come out of quite a negative way of it being conducted in terms of you might enjoy the ski thing you might go and do this learn to ski for a day and you might actually find that you've got a taste for it so i think uh the problem the situation is twofold i think you need to speak to your boyfriend and say to him can he please manage the situation on your behalf because the more pressure they're exerting on you the less you feel like you want to do it and secondly i think just you know be open to doing a day skiing and see you might like it you might like it and you might change your mind so good luck to you mom what's your advice i'm worried that why aren't they taking into consideration about the hip operation yes if they do care about her and she should accept what she's saying unless she can they think that she doesn't like their company that's what the main problem is what she can do, go with them you can rest or spar or something, she doesn't have to ski, have a nice time and come back then they won't think that she doesn't like their company, she does like their company but she's concerned about her hip replacement or hip operation or both knees it does hurt so she should go with them and don't do the skiing Mum Mum, I'm going to say, can Mum have a round of applause, sir?

18:16Romesh Ranganathan:That advice is great. I think you want to go to the holiday with your boyfriend. You don't want to feel the pressure of skiing. Yeah. At Prey Ski is like a thing, isn't it? So go there without the expectation and obligation to ski. And maybe you might have a little day on the baby slopes just to see if you like it. But yeah, take away that pressure and then you might not dread it. That's great advice. Mum, you smashed it. That was great, wasn't it? Thank you. Thank you, darling. How long have we been doing this podcast? A few months. okay that's probably the second good like decent bit of advice you've done it's quite hard though isn't it with that everyone's people like to go first lift last lift like skiing people are quite intense they're wankers aren't they yeah they're not wankers don't do that yeah no have you ever never never in my life i just think that like skiing it's there's sometimes you go for you go skiing as like a treat or you think i'm going to give it a go i just think there's some families that have just grown up with them.

19:10Romesh Ranganathan:They've always gone. And to them, the idea that you can't ski seems so alien. And Bernard, the idea of, I mean, we've never gone skiing. Our kids can't ski. And so some people just think it's part of the... Maybe royal family, they go for skiing every year. It's quite middle class, isn't it? Yeah, yeah. Ben, can you ski? Obviously you can. I actually can't. I'm bored. You don't ski?

19:41Romesh Ranganathan:How do you feel about having said that? Fine. Okay. Mum, would you ever like to go skiing? I'm not even having a normal holiday. Why would I think about skiing? All right, all right, all right. That's a good point. All right. Yeah. Maybe you could learn the violin and then you could play it underneath all of your moaning. This part of the show is brought to you by Sky Ultimate TV. Now, Mum, we both love TV, don't we? Oh, we do. We do. But you said in the past that you're jealous of the setup at mine because I've got that big screen and all the channels and everything. Not jealous. I'm proud. But I don't get a chance to watch films with you.

20:16Only last Sunday.

20:18Romesh Ranganathan:So let's talk about last Sunday. We had a wonderful time, didn't we, Ma? Wonderful time. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, we sat down. Why it doesn't happen all the time? Let's try and keep it positive. Okay, okay. But we were trying to figure out what to watch. But because of my setup, we had a lot of selection, didn't we? And what did we end up watching? What's the film title? Wait, Focker? Meet the Fockers. Meet the Fockers. We watched Meet the Fockers. Oh, wonderful film. Wonderful film. I enjoyed it. Ben still reminds you a bit of Ben, doesn't he? Who? No, no. No. He's handsome. That guy works funny.

20:58Yeah, he's quite ripped, though, isn't he?

21:00Romesh Ranganathan:And then we had such a good time watching Meet the Fockers. What did we watch after that? The first one. We watched the first one. First one. And we had a right old time, didn't we? Really? Then Dinesh and Claire turned up, and we all gathered around my TV for a fun old time. TV for a fun old time. What snacks did we have? Oh, actually, you brought around a Sri Lankan care package, didn't you? Don't call it a care package. I spent hours cooking and frying the aubergine. Yeah, care. You care. It's not an insult. Okay, okay. It's not an insult, do you? No. A care package. A package of care. Care, okay.

21:32Yeah? You don't call the food care package. Okay? Okay.

21:38Romesh Ranganathan:Like a banquet or... It wasn't a banquet. That's not the right word for that. Care package. You're the right asshole. Ah!

21:51Asshole.

Read the full transcript

21:52Romesh Ranganathan:That happened in Meet the Fockers, didn't it? Yeah. Asshole. Asshole. One more time. Asshole. Anyway, we had a nice little selection of colors. What? Oh, yeah, okay. But give context to that. The baby was learning sign language. Don't just go, squish, squish, push, push.
