In short
Romesh Ranganathan and his mum Shanti do a “mother and son” Q&A, mixing comedy with parenting advice. They also discuss Romesh’s childhood bullying and a garlic-curry smell incident, plus Shanti’s popularity on the show.
Key claims
Shanti says kids should be kept active all day so they’re “dead tired” at bedtime; she suggests playful “teaching” (e.g., presidents, fruits, capitals) even for very young babies. For older kids, she argues you should let them try imaginative ideas even if they might fail. She also claims Romesh’s self-belief came from her.
Notable examples
Romesh describes being bullied on the school bus after his mum made an “all garlic” curry—teachers reacted to the smell.
Guests
Will, John, Ben (regulars/participants on the show; no detailed backgrounds given in transcript) and Shanti (Romesh’s mum; parenting expert via lived experience).

1:26Romesh Ranganathan:Welcome back to the Thursday edition of the Romesh Ranganathan Show. I'm trying to do it sexy today. I'm here with Will, John, Ben and of course my mum Shanti. Every Thursday we sit down, chat about Monday's episode, hear your dilemmas and enjoy quality mother and son time in a confined space. Mum, there are a lot of Christmas lights being switched on at the moment. Could you please pretend like you're about to switch on the Crawley Town Christmas lights, right? And go, welcome to the Romesh Ranganathan Show. Welcome to the Romesh Ranganathan show. No, but like you're about to switch on the Christmas lights.
2:00Romesh Ranganathan:In fact, can you just do a bit... Christmas light. Okay. What do I do? Yeah, you do that. Pull two triggers. It launches two light missiles into the crowd. Just pretend. Imagine you're role-playing. We do like a role-play. You tell me what you want me to say. That defeats you because I keep doing that. I don't want to script you. Imagine that they've said... Do you want me to mention I'm in Crawley? Let's just completely put it in that place, right? So I want you to just introduce the Christmas light. Imagine right now you're sat in a chair, like in a box, and you're about to activate the Christmas lights.
2:36Romesh Ranganathan:You're talking to the people of Crawley Town. How do you activate the Christmas lights? I think this is in your future, in all seriousness. Don't talk bullshit, okay? I do think, guys, Will, John and Ben. Yeah, we're good. Okay, good, good. How do you switch the light on? It doesn't matter. It's not the actual, that's not the bit of content that we're after. It's not the actual switching on of the lights. It's like, yeah, we'd imagine it's a plunger. There you go. Well done. John contributed that. It's a plunger. That's all I'm asking. Why you go around it? Circle, Ramesh. Ramesh. It says intro chat two to three minutes.
3:09I'm doing it wrong. Like a nipple thing.
3:13Romesh Ranganathan:Whose nipples are you doing that to?
3:18Romesh Ranganathan:Are you twanging them? Like, you know, the thing behind the door.
3:24You didn't even know how to use the light on. Oh, my God. I'm such an ignorant. I don't know what you would have said.
3:30Romesh Ranganathan:Look, John is saying that plunger. It's cruelly. Can I tell you what it'll be? Yeah. That. For the cruelly town lights, it'll be that. And they won't come on. And then they'll have to get some technicians in. But the point is, Mum, imagine you're addressing the crowd. Right, OK. That's like a loudspeaker, that microphone. OK. You don't have to do anything different. So you're talking to the people of Crawley Town. Yeah. Okay, done. Hi, Crawley Town. Hey, Shanti. I have come to just Christmas lights on. Yeah. I'm so happy to see you all. Woo! Have a wonderful Christmas. I love you all. Love you too, Shanti.
4:17Fuck off your son. Okay, then you've got to do a countdown and then do the plunge, okay? Are you ready, Crowley? Yeah!
4:31Romesh Ranganathan:Oh, no countdown. Oh, shit, they're on! They're on! Holy shit!
4:45With me, Shanti.
4:48Romesh Ranganathan:On Monday, we had the wonderful Tim Keown and we gave him a phall curry. You know phall, don't you? Phall curry, yeah. Like the hottest of the hot, hot. Of course, yeah. You've never made a phall, have you? No, I don't know. Why would I? Why would I make phall curry? Is it possible to know what the triggers will be? No. It's just really hot curry. But you make hot curry, though. Hot curry? Delicious, by the way. As Ben will testify. It's great. Ben said to me, Ramesh took me to a restaurant. And they gave me aubergine curry I didn't enjoy. I love your curry, Shanti. That's what he said. He always gave me compliments.
5:24I don't tell you because you don't take anything seriously.
5:30Romesh Ranganathan:How seriously are you supposed to take that? Ben likes your aubergine curry. He does. You don't need gravitas, does it? And muffin curry. When did I take you to a restaurant, by the way? You went to, took, I don't know, hoppers or hoppers. Yeah, the aubergine curry at Hoppers is great. It's better than yours. I kid, I kid you're just my favourite you kid, I kid no mum shut up do you remember mum when I do you remember when I write the article in the Guardian about when I went to paradise and how much I enjoyed the Sri Lanka food and then mum phoned me up straight away she goes what's so good about it so you preferred it did you you preferred it so I the dal was delicious so what's so good about the dal tell me you were so pissed off weren't you so you never made a file?
6:16No, never.
6:17Romesh Ranganathan:Do you have any recollection of the hottest curry you ever made? No, no recollection, but martin curry, I always make it hot. Same amount of spices I put in, it comes out really tasty. So why would I reduce? Or increase. You once made, this is a true story, mum was worried about my health, and so do you know how some curries have a lot of garlic in. Mum made a garlic curry. Garlic, yeah, yeah. How much garlic did it have in it, Ramesh? It was all garlic. All garlic, all garlic. So imagine, you know, normally where you have like... All garlic is so tasty. You know normally where you have aubergine.
7:02Yeah, we put garlic. Garlic.
7:04Romesh Ranganathan:And then you know in a chicken curry where you normally have chicken, you put garlic. You will never have a heart attack. Never have a heart attack. No, you'll also never get a girlfriend. I ate the curry. I got onto, genuinely, I'm not exaggerating. It's a good, yeah, yeah. I'm not exaggerating. I got onto the school bus the next morning. 30 seconds after I got on, somebody went, what the fucking hell is that smell? Yes. Right? I got absolutely bullied the whole way on the bus because it was coming out of my pores, man. Just garlicky curry sweat. I smelt like a fucking stereotype. and then I get there, the whole day, kids are giving me shit, all day, all day.
7:47Romesh Ranganathan:Oh, you stink, you stink. Bud, bud, you stink, all that. Like proper racist stuff. Look at you, where you are now. Yeah, it's not because of the garlic curry, though, is it? I would argue it was in spite of. Anyway, so then one of the teachers kept me behind because he obviously could see I was upset and then I had to sit opposite a teacher who was asking me why I'd been getting bullied and if I was okay, while also reacting to how I smell. Yeah. Like, he obviously was like, I would have respected him more if he'd gone, well, if you're going to come in smelling like that. Your clothes were clean, underpants were clean.
8:24Yeah. Everything clean. Only the garlic went into your body. So how can it smell badly?
8:30Romesh Ranganathan:If you eat a garlic curry, how can you smell the next day? Are you really asking that question? Yeah, you brush your teeth. Mum, it's coming out of your skin. My ball bag sweat was garlic. My arse was secreting it. My armpits stank. Come on, mum. Maybe all the muck has come out. Yeah, it's possible. But anyway, you put up with it. Done and finished. Yeah. We'll move on. Anyway, we're going to do some audience interaction. But before we do audience interaction, what I would like to do, mum, is I'd like to talk to you. We need to acknowledge the elephant in the room. And that is that you are swiftly becoming, not becoming actually, have become the most popular thing about this whole show.
9:09Romesh Ranganathan:People love you. love you love you like coming from my son I'm a bit embarrassed is he buttering me or just telling me do I believe him you can ask him directly he sat here do you really mean it I don't want to see it okay right but it's genuinely like Will, John, Ben yeah is it true then yeah people love you yes queen I only watch it because of Ashanti. They even not announced at all recently. They said, I'll let you come if your mum's coming. You're big. Big time. Okay. Nice to know. Nice to know. It doesn't go to my head. I love them all. But it's nice to know somebody I appreciate what I'm doing.
9:57Romesh Ranganathan:It's changed your energy a little bit, I'd say. Like what? Like you're sort of... Yeah. Yeah, I am special. I don't need to see it, but if they love me, they love me. This episode is brought to you by Stand Up To Cancer. It's always a brilliant night of entertainment, story, science and a roller coaster of emotions. 10:45Romesh Ranganathan:This week we're answering more of your dilemmas. This week they're centred around kids with both parents and we should be able to handle that. Mum, do you think we've got similar parenting styles? I sort of value children's self-esteem more than you do. Mm-hmm. Do you think we're similar parents? Yeah, we are. In the way that we parent our kids? You think we're similar? Yes, yes. you're so good bringing up the children and the teaching helps you a lot so you know how to deal with the grown up children Theo is 16 and Alex and Charlie alright question one's from Justine let's hear it now this is a question for Shanti, however Romesh three boys, you might be able to assist, mostly Shanti but he's mostly Shanti I am a first time mum of a now five month old baby boy beautiful bouncy healthy baby boy however along with learning everything that comes with parenting first time around we are struggling mostly with sleep getting my boy to sleep and getting him to stay asleep is nigh on impossible and I'm losing the will to live Shanti any opinions tactics skills advice welcome as to how you got Dinesh and Ramesh to sleep through the night.
12:05Thank you.
12:06Romesh Ranganathan:Thank you, Justine, for your question. Mum? Yes, Justine, I'd love to answer that. Great. Keep them active whole day. Instead of you sitting and watching television, take them out for a walk, give them a lot of work. End of the day, they will be dead tired, time to go to bed. Mum, how advanced do you think this five-month-old is? Take him in the bush chair. Right. Okay? Okay. Play with him. Yeah. And ask him to ask questions. Make him tired. What questions do you... What questions? Who is American president? Who is American president?
12:53What's your next question? You are a teacher, aren't you? What are you talking about? Put the pictures in front of him. Put the pictures. Oh, yeah, five months old. 14:34Romesh Ranganathan:Do you want to have some night, man? It's Donald Trump. Go to sleep. Go to sleep. Little baby. What are you talking about? That's what I would do. You would show them a picture of the American president? I'm not only American president. Okay, who else? All the presidents. All the presidents? So you teach him, this is so-and-so, this is so-and-so, this is the president of this country, and war going on. War going on?
15:10Sorry.
15:11Romesh Ranganathan:So you would, Justine, by the way, you did say mostly Shanthi, so I hope you're enjoying this. Yeah. So you show all the presidents there's a war going on. What else? And when I name, when I ask your question, my dear, could you point out the president? Right. Yeah. He will pick it up. He's mentally, he will be tired because picking up all the right presidents. Mum, I'm sorry. He's five months old. Five months old, you start teaching them from little. The presidents. That's an example. Right. Give me another example. or there's a broke room for a five-month-old. Fruits, okay. And coconut. And coconut.
15:59Romesh Ranganathan:What's wrong with that? What's wrong with that? I can't... Mum, I'm sorry. What do you expect? When do you want to teach them ABCD? Not at five months. Why not? You could start introducing them to basic stuff, but the presidents and then fruit. That's an example. What a fucking combo, by the way. Right, you've got the presidents. Now let's move on to Apple. Capital of the countries. Capital of the countries, yeah. Yeah, yeah. At five months old. Yeah. He can put his hand up. And say what? Yeah. Correct. What country is this a president of? Yeah. What fruit is this? Yeah, good. You are taking the Mickey out on me.

17:52I can't believe you. Is this real?
17:55Romesh Ranganathan:Is this real? Is this real conversation? You're doing a character now. You're like the Asian partridge. I don't believe that you really believe this. Show a five-month-old president. What are you talking about? You didn't do that for us. Boxer matches. Boxer matches. Yeah, you're right. Or a line of Coke. One, two, three. Come on, my darling. How many sticks here? Yeah. So... How about you get something else that they can count that isn't flammable? And doesn't have poisonous chemicals on it? Whatever. I don't know.
18:32Romesh Ranganathan:Give them some matchsticks. Justine, the three items you're going to need and some fruit, a picture of Donald Trump and a box of matches. All the presidents. Go to sleep, little baby.
18:51The point is, make him tired. Holy shit.
18:58Make him tired.
19:00Romesh Ranganathan:Make him tired? Yeah. Okay, fine. That's it. Listen, I could offer you some advice, but you said mostly Shanti. So, good luck. I hope that was useful. God. holy shit okay uh shall we go to suzy we got a question from suzy now mom justin hope that was useful yeah good luck with your insomnia hi romesh and shanti my six-year-old has become obsessed with the idea of flying and is convinced that she is going to be able to build a working pair of wings um her designs involve like lots of fans that seem to be operating as jet packs And I've tried to give her, you know, kind of subtle hints that her designs are not going to probably work, which you might not think is necessary.
19:47But she's insisting that her friend is going to be bringing the materials and she'll be able to build this like working pair of wings when she sees her at forest school. so my question is like should I as a parent always be encouraging my child's ideas even if they're not going to work or do I need to you know kind of give her more like a realistic view of the world before she comes sobbing home from from forest school thanks bye thank you so much for your
20:15Romesh Ranganathan:question and can I just say what was who is that what was that person's name Susie Susie can I just say Susie not only did I like the question I like the level of detail and I liked your general demeanor you seem very nice okay mom what's the advice you should encourage the child to give let them try if it doesn't work it doesn't work but they have to try and get the answer if you go and advise them they won't like it mom didn't let me all through their life they'll be thinking mom didn't let me do this let me do this so yeah let him let her give it a try yeah okay yeah uh How old is this kid, did they say?
20:54Six.
20:55Romesh Ranganathan:Six. So she probably already knows all the presidents. This is too much. I am not asking the six-year-old. She should know by that age. By that time, she should know all the presidents. Yeah. Yeah. I think I understand why you're concerned because you think she's going to like, you know, there's a safety concern there, I guess. But I think that in terms of, because remember I used to think, I was convinced when I was a kid that I was going to be Superman. Do you remember? There you were. Well, I used to say to... Superman, yeah. Pardon? Where will you get the wings? Superman doesn't have wings.
21:36How does it fly? Ah, with the thing, isn't it?
21:39Romesh Ranganathan:What thing? What, how does it fly then? You're thinking of Spider-Man, I think, just from the gesture. Spider-Man, yeah, yeah, yeah. Superman just flies. Yeah, okay. Anyway, I remember once I said to mum, I'm going to jump out the window and fly. And she said, go on then. Really?
22:01Romesh Ranganathan:What was the thought process? That's how you learn. That's how you learn.
22:08Romesh Ranganathan:I think you let the child find out for themselves what the limitations of that idea are. And I think it's too early to start, in my opinion, is too early to start putting too many restrictions on that sort of thing. Otherwise, you know, you're starting to make, in my opinion, you're starting to, you could be accused of limiting that child's imagination. It's like, let them have mad ideas. A lot of the greatest stuff that's happened in this world is because of people having mad ideas and not limiting those. So I think if you've got a child that is thinking outside the box in that way, that's like a really special thing, and I think you should encourage it.
22:46Yes. You know that program about people making money? What is the program called?
22:52Romesh Ranganathan:Program about people making money. They try to sell their product that they have brought. Dramatistan. Huh? Dramatistan. Yeah. From a little age, they will be planning, you know, we can do that. So you don't know what age they were interested to learn things and parents must have guided them. Yeah. So they made millions. Yeah. Okay. One lady selling cards or Christmas cards or whatever. Yeah. I mean, some of them go to fail. Things like that. So that's why I said that five-month-old baby, teach him something. Otherwise, he'll be a right idiot when he grow up. Yeah, you're right. You're right. All right.
23:35Romesh Ranganathan:This is from Lewis. Hi there. It's Lewis here. I wanted to know if there was a piece of advice Shanti gave Romesh that he's lived by. No. Okay, let's get on to the next section. What's wrong? I asked you to memorise the timetable. Yeah. That helps you a lot. Okay, I was being a prick there. What I would say... You were, you're a big prick. Two things. One, I think learning a times table is overrated. Let me just get that out there. Okay? Yeah. I do think it's overrated. Why do you need to know times tables? Yeah, now it's all advanced. You can use the calculator. Yeah. Those days. Yeah. I didn't want you to use the calculator.
24:28Romesh Ranganathan:I know, but that wasn't just you. You didn't come up with the idea of times tables. It's quite popular. It's prevalent in education. The point I'm trying to make is it's not that useful. In life, it's not hugely useful. you know like I do think it's good to know them but the amount of time that's spent drilling them into kids in like a really boring way is not sufficiently paid off by the level of utility shall I tell you something Romesh please God has given a special gift you look at the book and you don't memorize anything you I think what's the word for you think I've got a photographic memory photographic memory I don't you have I don't you have Romesh I haven't who do you think knows better out of us two i don't mom i'm doing a play at the moment i'm struggling to learn the lines so i don't have a photographic memory but in answer to your question lewis uh i wouldn't say there's a specific piece of what i don't think you gave me a one-liner that would uh that would uh that i've kept for the whole of my life but what i do think is you've instilled a level of like self-belief and you should try and give a go at anything if you want to do it.
25:39Romesh Ranganathan:If you like, if you think you want to do it, give it a go. That is something that mum has given me and without that, I probably wouldn't have done most of the stuff that I've gone on to do now. You know, comedy, even when I was a teacher, securing a white woman, you know, none of those things would have been possible. Okay, should we move on? That's all achievement, is it? This part of the show is brought to you by Sky where you'll find festive movies to keep you entertained this Christmas That includes Sky's newest star-studded Christmas film Tinseltown which is available to watch on Sky Cinema from December the 5th Thinko The film stars Kiefer Sutherland playing Brad a washed-up Hollywood action hero who is tricked by his agent into starring in a pantomime in a small English town He's joined by Rebel Wilson who plays the pantomime's no-nonsense choreographer The film is a heartwarming journey of second chances surprising friendships and festive magic in this hilarious Christmas comedy.
26:34Romesh Ranganathan:Mum, do you think we'd be good in a pantomime? You? No, you. Maybe. Maybe. Yeah. I could see that in your future as well. Pantomime. You are seeing so many future. I don't believe that. No, I think you could play like a fairy godmother or something. Maybe. Maybe, darling. Yeah, I'll be good at that. Yeah. Would you be interested? I will be. It's quite good money. If I get an opportunity, I will do it. You'll do it? I'll do it. You have to do a long run right the way through Christmas. Yeah, why not? You only get Christmas Day off. Why not? Why not? I will. Okay. Do you know that I was in Panto once?
27:13Yes. Mirror.
27:15Romesh Ranganathan:Yes. I played the Magic Mirror. Magic Mirror. Just one recording. I was in every show. Smart. So at work, they took the children to Hoth. and watch that. It was really exciting. Well, they asked me to do it. I don't really have any aspirations to be in Panto. I've got nothing against Panto. Yeah. I think it's a great form of entertainment. In fact, Do you hear that? Sounds like breakfast is ready. Because Quaker's coming in hot with morning nutrition, 100 % whole grain oats, and a good source of fibre to fuel the rhythm of your morning and kickstart your day. And that sounds absolutely delicious.
