I'm Jack Royston, Newsweek's Chief Royal Correspondent, and this is Newsweek's Royal Report. Hello listeners and welcome to the show. Now it's been a dramatic few days. We've had the Epstein files which have put into the public domain a whole load of new emails which include excruciating details for Andrew. But the other major story of the weekend has been that a A second woman has come forward via her lawyers to bring allegations against Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, who obviously formerly was known as Prince Andrew until he had his royal title stripped from him by King Charles in October.
0:49And so her allegations are that she was she was sent to Britain by Epstein, that she spent a night with Andrew at Royal Lodge, his Windsor mansion. She was given a tour, she says, by Buckingham Palace and invited for tea. And she she is threatening to sue Andrew over this, basically. Now, her lawyers have been trying to get hold of Andrew's lawyers, only discover that Andrew doesn't have lawyers anymore, but he's no longer represented. But this comes alongside other material that we've had coming out of the Department of Justice in America. Epstein files disclosures, which include emails around about the same time in 2010.
1:30One email chain, for example, Epstein was trying to introduce Andrew to a 26-year-old Russian girl who he said was clever and beautiful and trustworthy. And an account for the Duke appeared to reply back, you know, brokering this meeting, brokering this dinner. and then another follow-up email talking about inviting Epstein into Buckingham Palace and saying, bring whomever you want. So obviously this is big stuff to come out. It appears to support the notion that part of the nature of the relationship between Andrew and Epstein was about Andrew's access to women. Now Andrew denies all the allegations against him.
2:13He always has. He said to the BBC in 2019 that he had not only not had sex with his original accuser, Virginia Jeffrey, but had not had sex with any woman associated with Epstein. But I have invited onto the show today to talk through all this with me, Graham Smith, who's the chief executive of the anti-monarchy campaign group Republic. People may have recognized their yellow signs at royal engagements. They hold up these big Not My King banners. So, Graham, thank you so much for coming on the show. Hi, Jack. Now, I wanted to have you on for quite a specific reason, which is that obviously, you know, the end game of this, so to speak, if you plot it several moves forwards on the chessboard is potentially very seriously reputationally damaging for King Charles and for the palace.
2:59So tell me what, what is your view on this? I mean, do you, I spoke to you earlier and we were talking about what the kind of public mood and attitude would be like if King Charles did try to fund an out of court settlement? Well, I mean, if Charles were to fund what we believe would be for the second time, he was reportedly, at least in part, funding the 12 million given to Virginia Giffray. If he was to do that again, then I think there would be a huge negative reaction. I mean, I think there was a general concern and frustration and anger in the country about Andrew, about the fact that he is seemingly beyond any kind of serious consequence.
3:42People have said, oh, you know, he's faced or he's lost a lot that is important to him. But, you know, it boils down to being told to use his own name and live in a different big house to the one he was living in before, which is not consequences of any kind that most people would have to deal with in these circumstances. So to bail him out so that he avoids these sorts of questions for a second time, I think, would cause a huge problem for Charles and for the monarchy. But this slightly misses the point because, of course, it shouldn't be a matter of civil lawsuits. It should be a matter of criminal investigation.
4:20But also, it isn't simply a reputational problem for Charles. There are serious questions about what he knew and when. And these questions also apply to William. Now, William has been an adult member, a senior member of the royal family for more than 20 years now. And it is inconceivable that they would not have wanted briefings from whoever had this information before. So they were aware at least of what it is they needed to protect themselves from and what they were trying to defend Andrew from. Now, there is a reason why they have paid out Virginia Geoffrey. There's a reason why they have done everything they could to protect Andrew.
4:57and if they were unaware of all these details it's unlikely they would have taken the same action as they had they would have indeed indeed so obviously it's up to this woman to decide whether she wants to make any kind of criminal complaint in britain but will you be making any contact with the police i know you've done that before you know on other stories where you felt they should investigate will you be writing to the to the cops in britain well we will be for two reasons i mean And I think obviously, you know, these fresh allegations, which we need to digest and have a look at and take some advice on, they are different in the sense that, you know, the excuses that the police have used have in part been a length of time since they happened.
5:37This is much more recent. It will be 15 years ago. The person involved says that she was invited into Andrew's own home. So it wasn't Epstein's home. It was his own home, which was covered in security. There would have been questions of who is this person, who are they visiting and so on at the door, and then invited privately to Buckingham Palace. So, again, a secure area. So there would have been records, there would have been information held about that visit. And the law has changed since between the accusations from Virginia Geoffrey and these accusations. So there should be a different sort of test from the police as to what they can and can't pursue.
6:16Yes, indeed. So just to pause you for a minute there, because that is a complex point. So when Virginia made her allegations relating to a period starting in March 2001, which doesn't to me feel like it was actually that long ago, but clearly it was a huge amount of time that's passed since, because actually sex trafficking laws were in a very kind of retrograde state in Britain at that time. There was something called procuring, which dated back, I mean, at least to the early 20th century, if not before. So in other words, before the era of globalization and modern sex trafficking laws didn't actually start to come into effect in Britain until about 2003 with the Sexual Offences Act.
6:56So in other words, when the police assessed Virginia's allegations against Andrew, they would have been using a kind of a legal framework that has since been updated in relation to the more general offence of sex trafficking. Obviously, they could have applied existing laws about sexual assault and rape, but they would not have had recourse to those broader human trafficking and sex trafficking laws. So that is a really interesting point that actually these allegations, which relate to a woman who says she was in her 20s at the time. So she's not saying she was a minor. But the Sexual Offences Act could potentially be a new lens through which the police examined this case.
7:36Virginia Duffet was over the UK age of consent at the time as well. I mean, it has always been this sort of from those who want to make excuses for Andrew, this is kind of disingenuous. Oh, I know she wasn't a minor. So that's not the issue. The issue is trafficking. The issue is being coerced. And indeed, New York law, if she was under the age of, she was a minor under New York law and actually even. Yeah, she was under 18. Exactly. And even an offence committed outside New York, if tried in New York, New York law would apply. So my understanding from lawyers is that actually the point about her being 17 and the UK age of consent being 16 instantly falls away if Andrew were being tried in New York.
8:15Yes, but also the laws in this country, which is that if you are a British citizen, you commit a sexual offence overseas, that can be prosecuted in the UK, which raises questions about what happened on Epstein's Island and what happened in New York as well. So, but I mean, you know, I think the police have been rather disingenuous. You know, I've said that they use excuses about how long ago it was and so on because they have prosecuted successfully abuse cases going back 40 years. um there's been a whole load of cases around you know things like operation u-tree celebrities and um so on um and they've managed to pursue those and even where they haven't secured a conviction they've still managed to get as far as court um and they pursued it vigorously with andrew they've made it literally no effort other than just a brief sort of review and said i know nothing to see here we're not going to pursue it which is an absolutely uh disgraceful response to this constant slew of allegations, evidence, further allegations and so on.
9:16The police's position is going to become untenable. Now, the question is, I mean, so far, the government and the police and everybody around and the monarchy and the royalties have all essentially just stuck their heads in the sand and said, you know, we're not going to respond and we're not going to engage. Now, they could theoretically carry on doing that. And there's very little that anybody could do other than what Republic is now doing, which is seeking to pursue a private prosecution. And this is the other reason why we're reporting the matter to the police, because there are other matters that we want to report to the police.
9:49The other allegations that came out of Andrew Lowney's book late last year about his conduct as a trade ambassador. So we need to. Which are financial predominantly. Yeah, to do with his using that role, allegedly, to pursue his own business interests and so on. But we need to put these to the police and then say, when the police ignore them, then we've got grounds to go and say, well, if you're not going to pursue this, then we will seek to do so, which is a complicated and expensive and slow process. But, you know, all of the whole establishment, if you like, for want of a better word, is forcing the public to make that choice.
10:30Do we want to just really allow this to carry on? Or are members of the public going to start funding a private prosecution and trying to pursue it that way? But I think that, you know, these allegations will keep on coming. I wouldn't be surprised if there are further allegations from other people. And I would suggest that, you know, it is going to reach a point where it's untended. And so just to pause you again, sorry to keep interrupting. I just want to slow you down a little bit. So just for our audience. So when you talk about a private prosecution, are you talking there about a private criminal prosecution or suing him in civil court?
11:01There's a criminal prosecution. So anybody can go to court and apply to a mattress case court and say, look, I want to take on the role of prosecutor. So we have instructed lawyers, we're going to announce this week who they are and get more detail out. But they would then do the investigating, the job that the police should be doing. and if they can build a case that stands a chance of succeeding in a criminal court, they can apply it to a matter of space and say that we want to then take on the role of the CPS. So we would then be the prosecutors. And, you know, it's fundamentally important that this is done, that, you know, someone needs to say, handle that, we've done everything we can to investigate this, we've gathered all the information available and here's the result.
11:41Here's, you know, either it stands up to, you know, it gets over that bar of being able to go to court or it doesn't and if it does then it goes to court and we can see all the evidence in a open court and see what's going on but the current situation is simply untenable and as i said you know william and child's both been heckled recently it's going to happen again you know people are asking them what did you know and that question i've seen a lot more recently over the weekend from on from commentators of all stripes and uh you know political persuasions on social media saying well what did they know?
12:14How much have they been covering up? Because they're simply not credible to think that they didn't know anything about this and yet they have gone out of their way to protect Andrew in order to protect themselves. Because of course there were emails between I think Epstein and Maxwell and Andrew's household staff as you know the kind of actual palace staff about the financial aspects because of course Fergie had massive loans, massive debts rather that she needed to pay off and Epstein helped her to pay those off and so Epstein was coordinating with Andrew's private secretary at the time um so now that deals with the financial aspect rather than the sex allegations but needless to say the palace were involved in the relationship but this raises a whole load of um questions of conflicts of interest people being beholden to other people of questionable character and so on and it simply isn't credible to believe that the the staff around William and Charles weren't aware of this, they weren't engaging with that directly.
13:10I don't know to what extent Andrew's staff overlaps with the other palace staff, but they would have had to have known, they would have wanted to have known in order to check that Charles and William were going to be dragged into something which they couldn't extricate themselves from, but so they knew what it was they were defending themselves against. And as I said, the Queen, the late Queen and Charles and William would have known this and what their whole pattern of behavior has been, on the one hand, silence, and on the other hand, protecting Andrew as much as they can. Every step of the way, they've always done the very minimum that they had to do.
13:48So they announced back in 2011, you know, he's not going to be the trade ambassador. He carried on after that, going around the world on the public ticket. He, later on after the news night interview, some things were taken away from him, but he remained a public figure. He still was still Prince, still Duke, and all the rest of it. And then when it was looking like it was going to court in the United States with Virginia Trifray's case, then they took further action, and then they took further action. You know, it's always just the absolute minimum, until late last year when they realized they had to pull the trigger and then really sort of remove as much as they could.
14:28But what they're learning today, over the weekend, is that that wasn't enough either, you know, that people don't, they're not interested in their titles and whether they're a duke or prince or whatever. What they want is to know that people face justice, no matter who they are, no matter how powerful they are, no matter who their family is. Yeah, so tell me, your membership, has it been growing? Has it been staying level? Has it been shrinking? And how big an issue is, Andrew, for your members? Well, our supporters base has been steadily growing for some time. But, I mean, we launched this crowdfunder, which very quickly raised over£20 ,000.
15:04We need to sort of double that over the next couple of months. We need to keep on talking about this because I think there are a lot of people who are relatively indifferent to the whole issue, but they find this kind of stuff really difficult to tolerate. And the more it drags out, the more it's starting to stick to the other worlds. And so they are thinking, well, you know, this is not something which we can live with anymore. I think for a lot of it, I mean, the big factor is that the Queen was largely untouchable for a lot of people. But now she's not there. People are much more willing to talk not only about what the other royals knew and how it affects them on what their role was, but are now starting to criticize the Queen as well.
15:45So the whole mood has changed. And, you know, regardless of our membership and our role in this, I think the public attitude is changing quite quickly. quite quickly and we will start to i mean there already has been a sharp decline in support for the monarchy over recent years we did commission a poll with savanta in uh november i think it was um most people thought that the queen did too much to uh protect andrew most people thought that the royals should come clean about what they knew when you know most people thought that what had happened wasn't enough in terms of um uh accountability for andrew um and support for the monarchy was dipped below 50 % for the, I think, third time in two years.
16:27So, you know, it is clearly having a significant impact. Yeah, indeed. So final point. So we talked about the scenario where Charles bails out, Andrew, and I think you told me previously that you would want Charles to step down under that scenario like you might expect of a minister. So I've put this to a couple of other people just to get kind of a counter argument. So I just want to put some of their points to you to give you an opportunity to explain or to come back on them. So one argument was, which you have dealt with, to be fair, was Virginia was over the age of consent. The latest woman is over the age of consent.
17:06Calling for abdication is just a gimmick, basically. And the current case won't make it to court. That was one. That was from Dickie Arbiter, who obviously you'll know was a press secretary to Queen Elizabeth II. I mean, I think Dickie Arbiter, to be a perfect honest, I mean, he would have to witness Andrew shooting someone dead in the street in order for him to actually turn on the royals. I mean, he used to work there. He would always defend them. And again, I find this defense on the grounds of how the women were pretty obnoxious. I think the point about whether or not Charles remains monarch in the event that he bails out Andrew is simply that my rule of thumb is always treat them as you would politicians.
17:48if there was a minister that had in 2011 been accused of the things that Andrew was accused of and had then followed up you know with countless other accusations they would have been gone years ago now if that minister um was in fact bailing out someone else in order for that person public figure to avoid um uh their day in court again i think that there's serious questions would be asked about why um you know this is not small change no even if it's 10 million pounds you know yes it might be small change for the billionaire charles but it is you know big money and so why is he doing that you know and it would leave an awful stain on charles's reputation now this is goes back obviously i mean i don't want the moniker there at all um but this is one of the reasons why because if you have someone who is in public office and they do this kind of thing they behave like this there should be a very simple clean mechanism for getting rid of them and then a very simple clean mechanism for replacing them and we don't have that with the monarchy if he chooses not to go there is nothing that we can done to get rid of him apart from get rid of the monarchy now some people say oh you know there's the abdication and all the rest of there was another lifetime another world um parliament is going to be very reluctant to do anything like that but of course william has also got questions to um answer so they are running out the road and running out of oils really that you know there's no clean skins in any of this they're all uh affected in one way or the other we even saw quotes from ann apparently suggesting that um that andrew is being harshly treated or unfairly treated because they live in a world where of so much um entitlement um that they think everybody else is beneath them and they don't owe excuse explanations they don't owe us the same sorts of standards um or expectations that everyone else does.
19:37And so, and this will be reflected as it was when the Queen Charles bailed out Andrew with that payment of Virginia Jeffrey. I think it is just about, look, make this go away. Justice doesn't matter. The victims aren't at the centre of this. What we want is for this to go away in order to protect us. Indeed, Graham, thank you so much for joining me. It's been wonderful having you on. Thank you. So, like I said, that new allegation is probably the most dramatic thing to come out on a weekend that was full of absolute bombshells. And so I'm going to talk through some of those emails. But first of all, I want to read the line that the woman's lawyer, Brad Edwards, gave to the BBC.
20:17And so he said, we're talking about at least one woman. So he's not actually closed it down to being this one additional alleged victim. At least one woman who was sent by Jeffrey Epstein over to Prince Andrew. And she even had, after a night with Prince Andrew, a tour of Buckingham Palace. Now, he said that she had tea during this tour. But also, crucially, you know, there was the overnight stay and a section encounter at Andrew's home Royal Lodge in 2010. But in the run up, in the build up to that, the organisation of that, Edward says that there was email contact between Andrew and his clients before they met in person.
20:56So he is presumably sitting on that email and knows what it says. Now that obviously should be a huge concern to the palace. I should say, of course, that Andrew has always denied any sexual activity with any woman linked to Epstein. So he denied Virginia's allegations, but in his BBC interview, you know, obviously he didn't know that this woman was going to come forwards at that time, but he was asked, could you have had any sexual relations with any woman linked to Epstein? He said no. Obviously, some of the email material that's come forward in the interim might cause some people to raise an eyebrow at that.
21:31But obviously, make your own minds up. And who knows whether we might get a comment from Andrew at some point. So interesting things about this email. One, about this incident rather. One, 2010 was after Epstein's conviction for soliciting a minor for prostitution. So this is not a kind of a trial and conviction for all of the allegations against him. This was the heavily criticised plea deal that he struck in Florida, which saw him spend some of his sentence under house arrest. By 2010, not only had he pleaded guilty, but he had also served his sentence. And this was for soliciting prostitution from a minor who was a 14 year old girl.
22:13now interesting to keep that new allegation in mind as we go through some of the emails that came out in the epstein files so again some of them are from 2010 i mentioned these emails from the duke of york who signed off a it doesn't you know we don't know uh for definite 100 percent that it's andrew but this is the same email account that has had biographical information that matches Andrew in the past. So Epstein writes, I have a friend who I think you might enjoy having dinner with. This is in August of 2010. The Duke replies, of course, I'm in Geneva until the morning of the 22nd, but would be delighted to see her.
22:54Will she bring a message from you? Please give her my contact details to get in touch. And then Epstein writes back, she's 26 Russian clever beautiful trustworthy interesting word and yes she has your email Epstein wrote so you know trustworthy there obviously this is a bit of a trend now we have a few of these past emails where there are references to people being reliable and trustworthy and you know you're not going to get stabbed in the back basically then a month later in September there's another group of emails, presumably about a different meeting. Who knows? I suppose perhaps it could be the same one delayed.
23:33We don't know for sure. But this is Epstein talking about having dinner with Andrew and they're talking about where to do it, to go to a restaurant or whatever. And then the Duke suggests that we could have dinner at Buckingham Palace and lots of privacy. Delighted for you, a later email, delighted for you to come to BP, that's Buckingham Palace, come with whomever and I'll be here free from 4pm to 8pm. And Epstein replied, see you at 4pm. Now, one interesting thing is whether there is any overlap between these email chains and this new allegation. The details of the new allegation do seem strikingly similar to that August 2010 exchange.
24:12The details in the new allegation do seem strikingly similar to that August 2010 exchange. Now, I don't know. I've asked and I've not yet had an answer, but we don't actually know whether it's the same instant or not. It might not be. Needless to say, though, all a full nine years after Virginia's allegations. So that is, it's fascinating stuff. And also, you know, in response to that set of August emails, Andrew seemed to acknowledge that he knew that Epstein had been convicted. By that point, he wrote an email which said, how are you good to be free? So obviously Epstein had just finished his sentence, his prison sentence, in fact, house arrest.
24:51So the reference of being good to be free presumably meant that you're no longer under house arrest. Epstein replied, good to be free from all sorts of things. So, you know, this is obviously a developing situation. Another reputational aspect to it is that if this case gets off the ground and, you know, this new woman files a lawsuit, if she has grounds to, if she can make it work with human trafficking laws as they exist, then her lawyers will have to serve papers to Andrew, physically serve them to Andrew. And Andrew will be living either where he is now, which is Royal Lodge in Windsor, or on the Sandringham Estate, where he'll be shielded under the umbrella police protection given to a major royal residence, a privately owned royal residence, but a major royal residence nonetheless.
25:36And so if there's a situation developed where Andrew is effectively hiding behind that security that is provided for the monarchy, then that could be another total reputational bin fire for King Charles and for the crown. Now, right now, as of this moment, Charles' decision back in October to strip Andrew of his prince title, strip him of his Duke of York title, it all seems to be holding. The public are not in uproar at Charles yet. But I would say that this case probably has a bigger chance than anything else to actually bring this crisis back to King Charles' door. exactly how the public will react and whether it will start to harm Charles domestically.
26:19We will have to wait and see. And on that note, I'm going to take a quick break. But just a reminder to rate and review The Royal Report on Apple Podcasts or Spotify or wherever you get your favourite shows. And when I'm back, Beatrice and Eugenie have actually become one of the more unsettling new aspects of the Epstein files, at least as far as they relate to the royal family.
26:47Now, the poisonous cloud of the Epstein scandal has been engulfing Andrew for the best part of 15 years. Over the past months, it started engulfing Sarah Ferguson too. Now, though, it appears to be spreading even further to Andrew and Fergie's children, Beatrice and Eugenie. Now, some news organisations in Britain are even going as far as to start to try to pin some of the blame on Beatrice and Eugenie. And for me, that probably goes a little bit too far. But some of the new Epstein emails have been profoundly chilling in terms of the way in which Andrew and actually Fergie to a significant extent were willing to expose their own children to Epstein.
27:27Now, obviously, Andrew has always denied wrongdoing in relation to Epstein. He has said that he never had sex with Virginia Jiffre, who accused him of raping her when she was a 17-year-old trafficking victim. He also said to the BBC in 2019 he has never had sex with any woman connected to Epstein, and he has denied knowing about Epstein's federal crimes. So no doubt Andrew and Fergie would both, if they were here, say they had no idea what was going on with Epstein. But at least in Andrew's case, that's becoming increasingly difficult to believe because we now have these emails that were sent between Andrew and Epstein talking about introducing Andrew to a 26-year-old Russian, beautiful Russian woman who was trustworthy.

28:09Andrew asking Gideon Maxwell to arrange him inappropriate friends and all of these things which just make it so much harder to believe Andrew. Not to mention, actually, we have had back in the autumn, emails came out in which Epstein appeared to confirm the authenticity of the photo of Andrew with Virginia. And now we've had an email from Gilliam Maxwell with a draft statement in which she too appeared to confirm the authenticity of this crucial piece of evidence, suggesting that Andrew was, in fact, with Virginia in Gilliam Maxwell's house when she was a 17-year-old trafficking victim. And so with that in mind, you would think that Andrew and Fergie would be a little bit careful about giving Epstein access to their own daughters who, you know, they were at different ages at different points in the timeline.
28:56But when they start coming into contact with Epstein, it's when they kind of hit around 18, 19, 20 sort of age. but it is crazy. So it starts with Epstein and actually Harvey Weinstein for what it's worth being invited to Beatrice's 18th birthday party. So they were guests. They were actually guests at her birthday party which is just completely wild to me. But then also when Epstein pleaded guilty via this much criticized plea deal in Florida where he only admitted soliciting a minor for prostitution. It was a 14-year-old minor, but he went around telling everyone she was like 17 and a half and trying to act like it was all just a technicality.
29:40So again, Andrew and Fergie would no doubt claim that they believed Epstein's ridiculous story and that they didn't think that it went any further than that. But needless to say, Fergie, not even Andrew, but Fergie took her daughters to see a man who was under house arrest in 2009 for soliciting a minor for prostitution. He'd only just come out of prison and she took her daughters to lunch with him. Princess usually at the time about 19 years old, Beatrice about 21. But, you know, still like potentially young enough for Epstein to have an interest in them. And they were kind of, Fergie was with them, but they were all there having lunch with him.
30:21I just, that's horrifying to me. This man was a predatory paedophile and sex spuser. and not only did they actually introduce their daughters to him, not only was he a guest at their daughter's 18th birthday party and actually while I'm there, who were the young people invited to that? She might have just invited all of her teenage friends but actually Eugenie being a couple of years younger than her would have been 16 presumably at that time. Did any of Eugenie's friends come? Were any of them younger even than her? Like I'd be interested to know who was the youngest child at that party that Epstein went to and Harvey Weinstein went to.
31:05But then, yeah, so taking and going over to see him to New York, to his house where he's under house arrest, to sit down and have dinner with him is completely crazy. Now, if that's not bad enough, have a little listen to this email that Fergie sent. So we're now moving on from 2009 to March 2010. And Fergie said to Epstein, who sent it on email, it's in writing, we can see it. Not sure yet, just waiting for Eugenie to come back from a shagging weekend. So obviously, I'm sure even American viewers know what shagging means. It's a UK slang word that is about sex, basically. So she's introduced a sexual lens for Epstein to view her daughter through.
31:51She's talking about her daughter's sex life with a paedophile. So this was March 2010, which was the month that Eugenie turned 20. And she was no doubt off with a boyfriend at the time, just trying to be a young person. Imagine your mum, imagine that's you. You're 20 years old and your mum is telling her friend, a predatory convicted paedophile, right? Convicted of soliciting a minor for prostitution about your sex life. Like that's wild. she's sexualized her child and you know an adult by law at that time but her child nonetheless her own daughter to a sexual predator and you know usually she might have been 20 but she was a she was a university student at that time and obviously Epstein a fully grown adult man and I think what makes it all the more creepy and kind of disturbing and weird is how desperate Fergie was like is it i mean let me read you this email and see what you think of it i'm feeling very traumatized this is 2010 so this is during the period we presume when fergie had already started asking epstein for money basically so she's broke she's got loads and loads of debts she's disintegrating basically and she needs epstein's money so she says i am feeling very traumatized and alone i am wanting to work for you at organizing your houses i am in the south of France.
33:17I have the perfect butler. So there she's offering to work for Epstein, like months after taking her princess daughters to have lunch with a man who was under house arrest for being a paedophile. She's now offering to work for him. Like it's just soul destroying. Obviously, Epstein had a number of staff running his houses, who now are no doubt all ostracized, I one would hope, by the people in their lives for, on the basis that were they complicit in his crimes. So March 2010, this is roundabout the same kind of time as the Shagging Weekend email. Fergie writes to Epstein, thank you so much for tonight.
33:58It was wonderful and something very special. I really appreciate it. Epstein replied, Sarah, obviously his emails are full of typos. I don't know why, but you can't type, basically. So Epstein replied, Sarah, could you are the one, which I think is supposed to be, ask one of your daughters to show redacted Buckingham thanks. Now, we don't totally know who redacted is. Obviously, the first thought is, is that an Epstein victim? Because some of the victims have been redacted, including in photographs. It might not be. It could be a friend who the FBI didn't ever speak to. Who knows? I don't know.
34:39I can't tell you why that was redacted. But obviously it is a haunting thought that that could have been somebody somehow connected to Epstein's offending. But we don't know. So Fergie replies, of course, but get Keith on a massive advance. So maybe it's Keith whose name was redacted in one place and not in another. I don't know. but like Epstein asking Fergie in the context of Fergie desperately groveling to Epstein to try and get money out of him Epstein's then asking her daughters to do stuff for him like he's only asking them because it benefits him don't know who this Keith person is um but obviously like and now Fergie having sexualized the dynamic in how they discussed her daughters the dynamic is now being created where Epstein is using Fergie to get her princess daughters to do stuff for him.
35:30July 2010, Fergie writes to Epstein, when can we talk? Sorry, the girls were not around this weekend for Redacted. We don't know why. Shows I don't crack the whip when I'm not in the country. Actually, Redacted was in France and Redacted was out with Dave. So the second Redacted there There is no doubt probably Beatrice, who had a boyfriend, Dave Clark. So the first redacted is presumably Eugenie. But need to say, here we have again. She's apologising to a child sexual predator for not being able to make her daughters available. Presumably, again, I don't know if that might have been another reference to the original email about escorting around Buckingham.
36:15But if that was a situation where Beatrice and Eugenie just turned around and said no, not doing it, then good, honestly, for them. Well done. And again, that would cement that point that I am hugely reluctant to start blaming Beatrice and Eugenie, who cannot control who their parents are and have somehow managed to come across as broadly sane, rational, and down-to-earth, despite having the worst parents in Britain. So I'm very reluctant currently, unless more comes out, to transfer that blame from Andrew and Sarah onto Beatrice and Eugenie. So, you know, it's interesting. We've had reports that Eugenie's cut off Andrew, but Beatrice doesn't seem to.
36:54You know, Andrew was at her baby's christening very recently. So we can only assume that she hasn't cut off Fergie either. Eugenie, has she cut off Fergie too? It's hard to say. We don't know. But I mean, if I was them, I would be having serious words with Sarah Ferguson at this point because it's horrific. It's a horrific thing. And, you know, the public probably didn't really believe Andrew to begin with. Maybe some people believed him when this issue first came up. and probably actually a good chunk of people believed him when Virginia first did her first ever newspaper interview back in 2011.
37:25But by the time of Andrew's BBC Newsnight interview in 2019, the percentage of people who actually believed him was vanishingly small. So probably most people have already gone on a journey to realise that Andrew just got up and basically told a load of nonsense to the BBC back then. And some of the people in his life might have taken a little longer to let go of their existing impression of him. His own daughters have all those memories from childhood of him raising them when he wasn't off fighting for the Royal Navy. So they're obviously going to take longer to let go of the other side of Andrew than the public are.
38:03But I mean, they must be at a point now reading emails about arranging 26-year-old Russian girls, about inappropriate friends, all the stuff that's come out that corroborates Virginia's account of events. It must be seriously testing their capacity to believe Andrew. But then also, what will they think about Fergie? Are they really imagining? Fergie and Andrew weren't married at the time that all of this happened. They had divorced each other already, so there was no real need for Andrew and Epstein to hide the sexual dynamics of their relationship from Fergie beyond that she might have thought it was a bit disgusting.
38:41But you would be wondering, I would be wondering, did Sarah Ferguson really not know? It's a question that's very difficult to ask. Let me keep going because some of the other emails might shed a bit of light too. So this one's from January 2010. Fergie says to episode, bear in mind this is before the Shagging Weekend email and before some of the other emails I've read here. This is actually slightly earlier in the timeline. It's post her taking the girls out to have lunch with him at his house. So Fergie says, You are a legend. I really don't have the words to describe. My love, gratitude for you, for your generosity, sorry, and kindness.
39:20I am at your service. Just marry me. And I think that we don't know exactly the context of this email, but one is tempted to assume that it's probably to do with her needing his money. But also, like, it's so over the top and fawning and groveling. the reference to generosity implies that it might have to do with helping him out of his debts just marry me I mean wow she knew at that point Andrew certainly knew we're fairly confident Fergie knew believed she knew anyway that he'd been under house arrest for soliciting a mind of a prostitution and she's saying just marry me my two theories are one did she kind of weirdly fall in love with him or is this all a performance?
40:09Like my original orthodox position was just that the reason that Fergie is so over the top and gushing constantly with Epstein is that it's over the top because it's not how she really feels. And it's all a big performance that she did to get his money. But there's just a flicker of a hint at points that actually maybe she might have seriously fallen for him. And so that brings us to September 2011. 2011, and another email chain involving Fergie. So wrap your heads around this and see what you think. See whether you think this reflects genuine emotion or pantomime performance, because she's very camp, Fergie, like a whole shtick, even outside of her emails of Epstein, a whole shtick is incredibly kind of over the top and camp.
40:53But see what you think of this. So September 2011, a message is relayed to Epstein by somebody else. That person says it's from F, The person in the message, as you'll see, signs off as Sarah. And from the details, it seems like Sarah Ferguson. So this is what gets said. Don't know if you are still on this BBM, which we think is BlackBerry Mobile, but heard from the Duke that you have had a baby boy. Obviously, an incredibly chilling aspect to the new Epstein files. Epstein had children. We did secret children we didn't know about, seemingly. Fergie says, even though you never kept in touch, I still am here with love, friendship and congratulations on your baby boy, Sarah XX.
41:36And then shortly afterwards, she seems to text this intermediary again and said, you have disappeared. I did not even know you were having a baby. It was so with lots of O's crystal clear to me that you were only friends with me to get to Andrew. Well, duh, Fergie, of course that's what happened. And she writes, and that really hurt me deeply, lots of E's, more than you will know. So what does that mean? Is that more performance or is that a genuine articulation of her being heartbroken and offended and hurt that Epstein was using her? I mean, if that is an authentic expression of emotion, then that kind of suggests that maybe Fergie didn't fully comprehend that she was dealing with a sociopathic child abuser, you know, and therefore or maybe she did genuinely develop this weird emotional attachment to him.
42:31But I also kind of can't help but see this as being part of Sarah Ferguson and Andrew's kind of narcissism. Like, I'm not really in favour of diagnosing people with mental health conditions. So, you know, I'm not necessarily saying they had NPD, narcissistic personality disorder, which is obviously an extremely serious mental health condition. but obviously even people who do not have NPD can still act in a narcissistic way. And so what you have here, the timeline is important. September 2011, so Virginia's first interview with the Mail on Sunday came out that February. There were then these stories in the Evening Standard saying that Fergie had borrowed Epstein's money and that that was scandalous because of his conviction for being a child abuser.
43:19Fergie responded to that by releasing this statement saying she abhors pedophilia and condemning Epstein. Epstein responds to that by threatening to sue Fergie. This is all in springtime. And so Fergie then sends a groveling message privately to him saying, I only did it so that I wouldn't lose my book deal and my charities. So it seems like there's then a period of freudure between them where they don't talk to each other. And then Fergie comes back with this. so like do we really believe that she's surprised that a guy who she claimed you know who she denounced publicly didn't particularly want to hang out with her anymore or exchange messages with her anymore but and why is he mentioning this thing as a baby boy about the baby boy my only other theory is that she wanted to let him know that she also had a compromise on him because Fergie and Andrew would have known it by that point that that Epstein had compromise on them.
44:18Even if Fergie didn't know about the sexual abuse, she did know that she had gotten massive amounts of trouble in the media for having taken Epstein's money. And no doubt there is more that we still don't know about in terms of those kinds of financial arrangements. So maybe this is her just letting Epstein know, you know, no one knows about your baby boy, but me and the Duke know. You know, me and Andrew know about your baby boy. So just be careful what you say publicly because we still have stuff that can damage you. So that's one possibility. And then the follow-up message would be to guide Epstein not to be misled by the friendly warm tone of the first.
45:01So in other words, the first message is written in this really warm tone. Fergie sends it and then thinks, oh, wait, what if he doesn't know that this is a threat? So she sends the next one saying how let down she feels by him disappearing. but the other thing that also occurred to me is like maybe Fergie's money problems aren't over yet maybe that could be a reason why she wanted to get back in touch with him so it's all up in the air we don't know definitively what the context of any of these emails were it's partly why I'm kind of laying out these theories which are only theories by the way but it's just to demonstrate the fact that there are multiple possibilities for how we explain the meaning and intent behind these messages and we don't know which of those possibilities is the correct one.
45:44But here's another message, you know, another really kind of haunting message about the girls, about Beatrice and Eugenie. So this is, again, it's after the point where stuff is starting to go wrong. This is in 2011. It's all started to come out in the media. We know that at this point, Beatrice and Eugenie, at the point they left university, lost their police protection detail and Charles won this battle with Andrew to have the girls not become working royals, basically. So somebody goes round to Royal Lodge where she finds Sarah and Ferguson, seemingly according to her message, to ask them to help her do her laundry, which is really weird because it's a security controlled building.
46:23You can't just wander around with a pie or a cup of sugar and knock on the front door and see if anyone's home. It's security controlled. People get signed in and signed out of Royal Lodge. But this is what was written by this person whose full identity is redacted. So, stuff bad for A's girls. This is to Epstein. There's an email to Epstein relaying an experience. Stuff bad for A's girls. Got royal protection taken away. Queen said NP royal list. So, NP usually stands for no problem, but I don't know what, maybe it's like a scanning error. I'm not totally sure, but the royal list, I think, I presume is a reference to the civil list, which was how royal funding used to be apportioned in the old days.
47:09There's a different system now. But it sounds like that means what she's actually saying here, this woman, is that Beatrice Eugenie aren't going to get money from the civil list, i.e. they're not going to get royal funding. So she says, Queen said NP royal list, get a job. So in other words, they're going to have to go into the private sector and get jobs, which is indeed what happened and what they did. S has a specific question for you. A is sad and frustrated, considering abdication, but he's like a zoo animal. No way, especially now, for him to thrive. I took my laundry, this is the weird bit, I took my laundry to their house yesterday.
47:49They were a little shocked. I hope that wasn't rude. A said yes, but S wasn't amused. I needed yoga clothes. So that is all pretty strange to me. So like S has a specific question for you and then no explanation of what that question is, is weird and gives an indication that this message is hinting at something that the person, the sender does not want to explicitly describe. No doubt out of a sense that anything you write down has the potential to be read at a later date, exactly as I'm doing right now, which makes the laundry thing weird. Like why is she bothering to tell Epstein that Andrew said yes to washing her clothes for her, but Sarah Ferguson wasn't amused.
48:32And who cares whether she needs yoga clothes or not? It's all a bit weird. And it's tempting to wonder whether those are euphemistic references for things that the sender is not willing to discuss explicitly, but we cannot possibly know. But one thing that's interesting is that Epstein just responds with a single line that has been redacted. So what could that possibly have been? You know, the temptation is to think, well, things are getting redacted because they're the names of the victims, but we don't know. We have no idea what that redaction is. But the person who sent the original message replies, so you aren't even curious.
49:09So that seems to me to suggest that Epstein knew what specific question Sarah S. might have for him. Again, totally possible that she needed more money, but we don't know exactly what. He's then replied that an example of something Epstein might have written is just Virginia Jeffrey, because obviously her allegations were out in the public domain right now. So that might have been just, and Virginia's name is redacted elsewhere in the Epstein files. So he might have just been saying, there's nothing I can do with Andrew and Fergie because Virginia, because of Virginia's allegations. And then the line, so you're not, so you aren't even curious, presumably as a reference to curious to know what Sarah has to say, but like that's wild as well.
49:53you know like she's just still getting updates on Beatrice and Eugenie even after everything's come out like there's no way that any of them didn't know what time it was by this point so Virginia's first newspaper interview months earlier so this was September her interview was published at the very end of February said that she had points in her life had been sleeping homeless having sex with men for food and that she took Xanax to numb the pain and that Epstein tortured her and sexually abused her. And Epstein's still getting updates about Beatrice and Uchini. It's insane. How did they do this to their daughters to expose them in this way and leave them exposed like this?
50:32The other obvious aspects of this particular email that's worth discussing is the reference to Andrew wanting to abdicate, considering abdication, which I don't know whether that's this sender is misusing that word abdication, but obviously only the monarch abdicates. Harry didn't abdicate when he quit the palace and went to have a new life in America. You abdicate the throne. So you only abdicate if you're on the throne. So if this word was used by Andrew and Fergie, and it's just another classic example of their narcissism, you're not on the throne, you're not on the throne. You're not able to abdicate.
51:09It's just them whipping up a massive drama around his oversized ego. And in fact, he wasn't even particularly high up the line of succession by this point. So this was the year, 2011 was the year that William and Kate got married. So that was April. So it had already happened by the time September comes around. And obviously the minute Kate has her first child, Andrew's bumped even further down the line of succession. He's not even the spare anymore because where Charles to die, William would become king. As soon as George is born, George becomes after William and then Harry and then Andrew. So, you know, he's already kind of crashing down the line of succession.
51:50And yet he's still talking about abdication. And I mentioned earlier, the final point I want to make, I mentioned earlier, Guylaine Maxwell has now also confirmed that the photo of Virginia was authentic. So what we have there is it's a 2015 email saying, in 2001, I was in London when Redacted, which we think is Virginia, met a number of friends of mine, including Prince Andrew. A photograph was taken as I imagine she wanted to show it to friends and family. So there you go. She's there. She is confirming this piece of evidence, which puts Andrew in the room with a woman who has accused him, who was 17, like provably, like demonstrably easily established as 17 at the point that the photo was taken.
52:30and Andrew's got his arm around her waist in the house of a woman who's currently serving 20 years in prison for grooming girls for Epstein to abuse. Picture reportedly taken by Epstein, the serial sexual predator and child abuser. Gillian Maxwell's visible in the background of the photo. Now we have had both Epstein and Maxwell privately confirm the authenticity of that photo, which is also confirmed elsewhere too. There's just so much evidence against Andrew and it's just such a tragedy. that it was never put before a jury while Virginia was still alive. Right, I'm going to take one more quick break, but just before I do, just a reminder to follow me on X.
53:08I'm at Jack underscore Royston, and you will find all my latest stories for Newsweek. And when I'm back, Nicki Minaj has told Harry to go home.
53:23Hello, and welcome back to the show. Now, Harry and Meghan have been criticised by some Hollywood celebrities, is praised by others at different points, but the latest person to weigh in on the Sussexes is Nicki Minaj. And she was on the Katie Miller podcast. And she was asked, Nicki Minaj was asked, what do you think of them? What do you think of Harry and Meghan? And this is what she said. So she kind of inhaled, paused, reflected, took a moment and then said, I think he should go home like et he should go home and then just go home she said so um she said i did not think he should have heard the family at the family's dirty laundry um but that's just me darling and she kind of said that bit in a in an english accent now nikki minaj's english accent is actually genuinely really good and she's been praised for it before um so yeah she um that's something she's got up her sleeve which then continued i have nothing but love for them for everyone i love the royal family as if I know them.
54:21But I think Americans, we love the idea of the royal family so much. And I just was like, oh, but you know, people do things and you don't know why and you don't know what's going on inside of them. So I don't judge. But I was like, oh man, because I felt like I knew them in some way. So she kind of softened it a bit, but the go home line is quite amusing because she may well not know this, but obviously that's the big speculation in the British media at the moment is whether Harry is in fact going to go home. Although actually, Nicki Minaj seems to say that she loves the royal family and loves them like she knows them.
54:56So maybe actually she's really plugged into royal news and she absolutely does know that that's the conversation that's happening at the moment and genuinely does think that he should go home and maybe go back to the royals or whatever. But look, Nicki Minaj is a massive star, massive celebrity. the fact that she disagreed with their Oprah interview doesn't mean that that's going to be fatal for them and it comes alongside it's probably not actually anywhere near as dramatic as their big fallout with Kim Kardashian and with the Kardashian family over Kris Jenner's birthday but it is like the problem I think for Harry and Meghan is actually just the fact that increasingly they don't really have a constituency of like diehard fans in the celebrity world anymore and who knows like maybe some people really love them still but are just keeping their mouths shut because that has kind of been the trend in american politics um in the last kind of couple of years is that the program the big kind of progressive political voices in the celebrity world have gone silent um because they're worried about trump and they recognize that they're kind of you know that the atmosphere has suddenly changed and so they went from speaking out all the time about politics to not speaking at all and obviously harry and megan at one point were a kind of political issue because they were, you know, because of their swipes against the monarchy.
56:14So maybe they still have their fans and people are just staying quiet. But it's just, it's a really interesting aspect of this way in which Harry and Meghan are pulled in two different directions that like all of the stuff that Meghan has going on, you know, Netflix and so on should pull her deeper and deeper and deeper into the celebrity world, wanting to be praised by people like Nicki Minaj. But then Harry's just not really in there. I don't think Harry will care at all that Nicki Minaj has said this. And yeah, it just feels increasingly like they're pulled in two different directions. So, you know, nothing for them to panic about too much but just another interesting sign that there's, you know, they went out to America to make it in Hollywood and this is the kind of comment that's being made about them.
57:00And that's it for this episode of The Royal Report. Be sure to join me every show when I visit the latest royal headlines, embark on some royal deep dives, and riff on all things Royal. Until next time, I'm Jack Royston. Thanks for listening and a curtsy to you all.
