Key claims

Clancy (a former labor and delivery nurse) doesn’t deny strangling her three kids, arguing postpartum psychosis; prosecutors say she knew what she was doing. Tallarico’s campaign says his past comments missed the mark and he’s a “proud capitalist,” but CNN’s video shows him tying climate change to oppressive systems. “Pheromone maxing” is criticized by dermatologists as “bacteria maxing” and not supported as a dating strategy.

Notable examples

Judge William Sullivan excusing the jury until 9 a.m. Wednesday; Tallarico’s “dismantling” quote from a Sierra Club Zoom; TikTok users claiming “onion musk” attracts women.

0:33Hey everybody, I'm Dave AI and this is First Look. It's Wednesday, September 2nd, 2026. We've got a packed show for you today. Deadlocked, Lindsay Clancy jury sent home after a fourth day of deliberations without a verdict. The Massachusetts mom who strangled her three kids is still waiting And the postpartum psychosis defense is dividing the country. Newly surfaced video of Texas Senate hopeful James Loti Tallarico tying climate change to white supremacy and capitalism. Six-year-old remarks the campaign now says missed the mark. Some Gen Z men are pheromone maxing, skipping showers, deodorant, and hair washing, and calling the resulting onion musk a dating strategy.

1:27Let's dive in. Lindsey Clancy jury hits an impasse. The judge presiding over the Lindsey Clancy triple murder trial in Massachusetts sent the jury home early Tuesday after the deliberation clock hit 23 hours. My understanding is that you requested to be excused until tomorrow at 9 o 'clock, Judge William Sullivan said. I just want to thank you for your hard work and commitment. He instructed them not to read, listen to, or talk about the case, and to return at 9 a.m. Wednesday for a fifth day. Earlier Tuesday, the jury reported it could not reach a unanimous decision on whether Clancy was criminally responsible for killing her three young children.

2:11Sullivan told them to keep trying. I know there were over 80 witnesses. There were over 300 exhibits. But because of that, I'm going to ask you to go back out, keeping in mind all of the instructions that I gave you. Resume your deliberations at this time. Clancy, 36, a former labor and delivery nurse, does not deny strangling her children. She says postpartum psychosis made her do it. Prosecutors say she knew exactly what she was doing. She has pleaded not guilty. She stared straight ahead as the jury entered, then looked toward them as the judge spoke. This is the first public sign of an impasse in a trial that has focused on maternal mental health after childbirth and split the public.

2:57Outside the courthouse, her supporters kept rallying. One of them, Mary Stacey, 68, a retired accountant, told the New York Post the case is bigger than OJ. It's gone more international, she said. It's the subject matter, postpartum psychosis, and it's more about mental illness. I think it's bigger than OJ, I really do. People are going to look back at it. Three dead children, an insanity defense built on postpartum psychosis, a jury that cannot agree after 23 hours. That is where Massachusetts stands this morning. Low-T Tallarico and the 2020 Zoom tape. Newly surfaced footage shows US Senate hopeful James Tallarico on a September 2020 Zoom call with the Austin chapter of the Sierra Club, connecting climate change to white supremacy and capitalism.

3:53CNN obtained the video. Tallarico was fed a heavily scripted question about mitigating the so-called impacts of climate change on Texas. He went straight to the left's most extreme talking points. I'm thankful that you asked this question and thankful that young activists have really drawn the link between climate change and white supremacy and capitalism in our country. And I think only understanding the ways that all three of those oppressive systems work together, are we going to be able to begin the process of dismantling them? That is not a slip. That is the worldview. A disdain for capitalism among Democrats and DSA-aligned candidates has only grown since, but Tallarico was already selling the anti-American package six years ago.

4:46He also blasted Texas oil and gas. We all know that Texas has been a leader in oil and gas, but in many ways, that's like being the leader in cassette tapes in the 1980s. That industry is not gonna last. And if we wanna ensure we have an economy that's gonna work for our children and our children's children, we gotta be ahead of the curve and Texas has to lead instead of follow on this issue. His campaign now tells CNN some past comments missed the mark and insists Tallarico thinks of himself as a proud capitalist. Other remarks that drew fire include telling Americans to eat less meat to fight climate change, the line that earned him the nickname Tofu Tallarico.

5:33Republicans have more recently labeled him low-T Tallarico over extremist comments on the border and transgender issues, and over an effeminate delivery style that was on full display in that Sierra Club Zoom. Recent polling gives Tallarico a healthy lead over Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, and Tallarico has built a large campaign war chest. The Wall Street Journal noted the obvious. Paxton has history and President Trump on his side. The tape is out. The record is the record. Pheromone maxing. Skipping showers. Forgoing deodorant. Ditching hair wash day. Some Gen Z men on TikTok are calling it pheromone maxing and treating their natural musk as a dating strategy.

6:21Stopped washing my hair at all, and now I unironically get more compliments on how it smells and looks from women, one user posted. Pheromone maxing is key. Another, I stopped using cologne and I've been getting more compliments on my disgusting onion smell than ever. A third, the reason you can't pull baddies is because you wear cologne and deodorant. Science says scent can play a role in attraction. Psychologists and dermatologists say there is no evidence that skipping showers makes anyone more desirable. Dr. Shireen Taymor, a board-certified dermatologist in New York, told USA Today, Pheromone maxing takes a kernel of legitimate science, the fact that humans produce individual chemical odors, and that smell can influence how we perceive other people, and stretches it into a conclusion the science doesn't support.

7:15Her verdict? Not showering isn't pheromone maxing. For the most part, it's bacteria maxing. The term comes out of the look-smaxing community, which has pushed extreme and often debunked methods, bone smashing, deliberately breaking bones so they heal stronger, drugs to crash body fat percentage, lean max, self-injected facial filler. The good news is the shower-skipping version does not appear widespread. Pheromones are chemical signals that can trigger behavioral or physiological responses in the same species. Pamela Dalton, the psychologist and olfactory scientist at the Monell Chemical Senses Center, notes that body odor can carry information about emotional state, health, age, and genetic diversity.

8:02In animals, those chemicals are linked to mating. In humans, she says, human chemical communication does not really influence behavior in the same way that pheromones in other species do. Being attracted to a partner's smell is real. It is usually familiarity with that person's unique scent, not a magic love chemical. Ads for pheromone perfumes still rack up millions of views. Strong smells tied to physical or sexual activity can matter to an intimate partner. Dalton says that is rare with a stranger. So the TikTok advice is stop washing, lean into the onion. Dermatologists call it bacteria maxing.

8:43That is the trend this morning. And that's your first look this Wednesday. Quick recap, Clancy Jury sent home after 23 hours with no verdict and told to come back tomorrow. Tallarico's 2020 tape tying climate to white supremacy and capitalism is out while he runs as a proud capitalist. Some Gen Z men are skipping showers and calling it a dating hack. We'll keep following all of it. I'm Dave AI. Thanks for starting your day with First Look. See you tomorrow.

9:41Dave Rubin:We'll see you next time. at Edens Plaza and Wilmette.
