In short

The SheerLuxe Podcast episode covers Oscars/Vanity Fair fashion chatter, Louis Theroux’s Netflix documentary The Manosphere, and three “dilemmas” about career change, confidence, and boundaries/overpacking.

Guests

Nana Champong (host), Tolly (author and co-host of the Receipts Podcast), and Josh Smith (new contributor; previously worked in magazines for ~10 years).

Key claims

the hosts question where men’s public “male ally” voices are, argue manosphere content is widespread (not a niche “internet underworld”), and say it’s reductive to treat participants as “little boys” rather than influencers. They also critique Timothée Chalamet’s comments about “dying” theatre/ballet/opera and note Vanity Fair red carpet energy was better than the Oscars.

Notable examples

Mason Alexander Park leading a West End production as an early trans western lead; The Middle on Netflix; F1 in Melbourne; and dilemma advice including an “F-off fund,” “fake it till you make it,” friend “tier” boundaries, and outfit planning for travel.

0:00On this week's podcast, we talk about all of the best looks from the Oscars and Vanity Fair party. Kendall Jenner in the baby blue Chanel. See, someone else says she's like a bridesmaid. It's so contradictory. What happened to Timothee Chalamet's Oscar? He just said something that he should have only said in his group chat. If someone put that in the group chat, I'd be like, you're a dick. Also, Louis Theroux's new documentary, The Manosphere. Lots of thoughts on that. Where the fuck are the male allies for women? Where are the vocal men who are calling male behavior out, who are stepping up, who are doing things for quality?

0:34And lastly, we talk about your dilemmas. How do you set boundaries in your 30s? And also, how do you stop overpacking? If you're packing for a holiday and you want options, what's on that? Make sure you stay tuned. It is a great episode and do not forget to subscribe.

0:59Welcome to Shear Lucks Podcast. I'm your host, Nana Champong, and today I'm joined by author and co-host of the Receipts Podcast, Tolly, and our newest contributor, Josh Smith. Yay! We made it official, honey! Wait, is this official? Is this the Relationship State or something? It's the Relationship State Update. Okay, what's the update? Get the Facebook file up, babe. Tell us all, what is it? We're going to delve into it. We're going to delve into it. I'm so excited. But first, in this episode, we are going to be diving into cultural moments and sharing what we can't stop thinking about, what's hot right now, and finishing off with some dilemmas.

1:32But before we get into it, guys, please, please, please, if you have not subscribed, why? I want to know. I'm going to track you down. What you need to do... Aggressive. What you need to do is hit the subscribe button. Honestly, it really helps us out. Anyway, guys, welcome. Hello, hello, hello. Such a fun panel today. Before we get into it, Firstly, Josh, you are our newest contributor. Yeah, can you believe? I know. What does this mean? I think that Hodge made it happen just so she can hang out with me more. It's because she's just desperate to be a solid tier one friend. I think that's why she made it happen.

2:09Levels to this. So I'm going to be kind of like a contributing broadcaster role. So I'll be popping in. I'll be chatting. I'll be on here a little bit more often. I know. We'll be like desk mates. We'll be desk mates. Also, it was so funny when I came in today. I was like, Saskia, what do I do? Do I have to sit at a desk? It's been so long since I had a proper job. Because obviously I used to work in magazines for like 10 years. And obviously I was like such an office girly. So what I'm excited about is to really get under the sheer lux girl gossip. Do you know what I mean? Like I want to be. You're going to be in it.

2:43Is to the wall. I want to know everything that goes on basically. I also want to talk about our new set. We are not in the traditional podcast set. We're trying something new. How are we feeling about this guys? I feel comfy. I feel, so this is my second time here. I'm back and I'm black. Oh wait, I am black and blonde. I'm back. But I wanted to say I'm back and I'm blonde.

3:07You are also black and blonde. But I am black and blonde too. And this is like, this is different. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I'm getting used to it. It's comfortable. I'd like to be closer to Josh. Also this is the first time we've, we've been friends for like years. We've never actually done anything together in the work capacity. Can you believe it? Yeah, we're going to see how it goes. It's injustice. This is our CV. It's our audition. So you'll be good. Okay, be good. I want to start off with what we are wearing. Describe outfits for our listeners. You wanna go first? I wanna go first, babe. No, totally.

3:36So I'm actually wearing a Primark suit. Oh! And I am not even kidding you. The fit and the quality of the suit is sensational. I've worn it a couple of times recently and everyone keeps going like, oh my God, where's that suit from? I'm like, it's Primark. It's Primark, I know. And I just love that for me. And I've got a little Ross and Bromley boot arm. Oh, I love that. Tolly. This is just a little ASOS jacket, top, zip thing. It's got an exaggerated shoulder. I can't say that word. Exaggerated. Shoulder. No. Shoulder. Yeah. Shoulder. Genuinely, it's a list of words that I can't say. I can't say variety.

4:09I can't say California. California. Yeah. Babe, I've got speech impediments. I can't say THL sounds. Is it free or is it free? No one knows. No one knows. It's got shoulder pads. Yeah. And it's stingy to the waist and just jeans for my sauce. And my little loaf is from Bershka. Love that. We look business up top today, don't we, babe? You've got very first day at work outfit on. Yeah, I've got my first day at work outfit on. I know. I love that you're both color coordinated though. Yeah. We're in sync. Yeah. In sync. I have got on this funnel neck jacket. It's from Frankie Sharp with the matching pencil skirt.

4:47Also from Frankie Sharp. and then my leopard print boots are really old ASOS. You look sensational. Thank you so much. You've got my two favorite things, red and leopard print. Yeah, it's a good combo.

5:06So first up, things that we love. What are we loving this week, guys? What are we loving? Josh. I just went to see the funniest play I've ever seen in my whole life. Yeah. I'm kind of becoming a bit of a theatre girly. I'm loving it and I went to go see Oh Mary and if you don't know what it's about it's don't know what it's a reimagining of Mary Todd Lincoln now bear with me so it is a complete exaggeration of her life yeah and she is the most ostentatious most ridiculous character they've kind of positioned her as an alcoholic and then Abraham Lincoln is a little bit rooty shall we say don't want to give away what happened yeah but when i say it's the funniest thing i've ever seen i was heaving like dry heaving there was a scene that happened and i was laughing for a solid 10 minutes after everyone else stopped and you had to like hold it in no babe i was like i said like a pig that someone was like massacring do you what i mean and um it's led by mason alexander park he's been in loads of things on the west end and they are the most incredible performer yeah on the planet i'm like they do comedy they do drama they do singing all in one role it's only an hour and 20 minutes which is my favorite kind of theater yeah we're in without no interval had the prosecco to kept me going it was so so so so so so so good and also mason is a real trailblazer as well because they're one of the first ever trans people to lead a western production yeah um and they're actually on the podcast my podcast this week and we're talking all about that and it was honestly the funniest thing i've ever seen have you seen titanic yeah have you seen titanic no i haven't but i've seen i've seen the clips of it guys yeah that is funny but this is like next level funny okay and they are in it until the end of april so make sure you go and see and then katherine tate's taking over oh my gosh which is interesting but funny gotta go because they're the best performer on the planet right now added to the list tolly what am I loving okay I'm loving a tv show called the middle and everyone's like what are you talking about it's not Malcolm in the Middle it's just been put on Netflix it is about 20 years old but hear me out it's like we're late to the party but we're here for it it's not new it's not new in any way shape or form but I do recommend it because sometimes you just want telly in the background that just makes you laugh and it's not serious and I think a lot of telly now it's like It's getting good and then someone dies.

7:36It's getting good and someone gets diagnosed of a disease and it's like, none of that is happening here. It is just like really light hearted. It's really light hearted. It's 29 minutes long per episode to be exact. That's very specific. That's how long I'm watching it for. It is like nine seasons, 23 episodes per season. And I don't listen to music when I work. I watch telly when I work. So it's something, I know it's really weird. I can't listen to music. I kind of get carried away with it too much. What you're like, she has just like, woo! Yeah, I just get carried away. But with telly, I just like something in the background.

8:06And it's one of those shows that's like, it starts at Christmas, then Valentine's Day, then Mother's Day. You've got all of those. It covers all those things. Halloween. No, quite literally, every single festive season is covered on the show. And I'm having a great time. What season are you on now? I think I'm on season six, episode 21. Oh, wow, you've put in a shift. Babe, it's all I've watched every single day for the last two weeks. I've watched nothing else. and like the latest episode I watched and the iPad is just coming to existence in the world. No, you're joking. Yeah, in the episode they're talking about this new thing called the iPad.

8:41I was like, oh my God, the iPad? Who knew what that is? Everyone should watch it because it is everyone's like reactions to like back in the day. It's fun. Oh my gosh, I know. Well, speaking of like back in the day, I'm really enjoying on Instagram at the moment. Yeah. The mum and dad, what were you like in the 90s? Oh yeah, that's cute. Oh yeah. I cannot get enough and it's now my entire algorithm. Oh my God, the Ben Shepard one, I was like - Oh, I didn't see that one. He was a great one. Halle Berry. I love how we talked about the Ben Shepard one, but Nicole Kidman's done it. Like Reece McPherson was like, Ben Shepard.

9:13Yeah, I'm that Halle Berry Oscar winner. I feel like Ben Shepard from this morning. That was so fair, because he was good. Babe, I think he's such a dill now. He's like my number one straight man crush. Oh, really? I think he was also like a big gay awakening for me. So I remember him like doing a segment on GMTV, topless when I was probably about the age of like 12 and I was like oh there's a little rumble in the jungle here do you mind me my awakening was Usher on top of the pops he was like performing you make me one and I remember he did a dance where he like left his shoe and it went back into his shoes and he was also topless and I was like wait a minute I want to be that shoe wait a minute what is this feeling what is happening I have to say when I went to go see usher last year i was like clutching my pals i was like you straight people are freaky like literally i was like this close to me i got vip tickets i was in the booth thing in the cherry beer yeah would you have taken the cherry of course you guys are so desperate i would have taken you would not take a cherry no no and that would that's what makes me special yeah Because I'd be like, oh, no, thank you.

10:24And then later on, the dressing room would be like, who is that girl? We should meet her. No, no. But like, he would, no. I would 100 % take the cherry. But yeah, Usher also. Yeah. What was your sexual awakening? I would say, I'd say Usher. Usher as well. Seriously, we're on the topic? Yeah, on the topic. Usher or maybe Tyrese. Oh, old school. Very, very, very hot. Things that I've been loving. I've just got back from Australia. Nice, we saw you. We're loving things down under, shall we say. What a great segue from what we were just saying. You said it honey. Melbourne has also just been voted the best city in the world for 2026.

11:03Oh, has it? Wait, what, we just started? Well, really not. They're killing it already. But I will say, I absolutely love that city. It's just magic. I am desperate to go. I really want to go for the Australian Open because it always looks so chic and fun. Do you know what I mean? That's what I want to do. I went to the F1, that was incredible. Oh my God. That's fancy. Yeah, Saul Lewis Hamilton. There are so many fit men who do F1, you know. George Russell. Charles Leclerc. Oh God. Who is this man? Oh my God. He's like the sheet French one. He's just got married. You might have seen the picture of him with the sausage dog.

11:36Yes, I've seen that. Okay, that's his name. I don't know names. Don't know him for his work. I just objectified him. Don't know him for his work. We know him for his wedding photo. Yeah, yeah. That's it. Yeah, so F1 was great. It's a real foodie city. like if you love to eat honestly go to me you can not have a bad meal so i definitely what's the food like in australia like what is it it's a really good brunch like you know like daisy green yeah the tater tots and everything yeah it's like tater tots like whipped eggs avocado like you will not have a better avocado on toast than you will in melbourne or probably like the whole so it's worth buying 24 hours to get the best avo love it i would say so yeah how was the jet lag um i have been up since 2 30 a.m this morning god she looks so fresh it's a lot of makeup um so yeah the jet lag is definitely jet lagging but it's totally worth it but she's not lagging

12:33we are going to move on to fashion and beauty what have you guys spotted this week that so my friend oh my god i'd love a show in towels You do love a show and tell. Here we go. He is a beauty buyer at Harrods. And he came over to our new house the other day. And was like, I've got a present for you. Yeah. And it was this fragrance called L.A. Bruquettes. I think that's how you say it. 3-3-3. And it is like walking through a forest. I need to spray it. Spraying this. We all need to spray it. Guys. Okay. How should I do it? Should I spray it up? Tony was like, it's done now. Oh, that is nice. It's stunning.

13:11It's a bit musky. it's like for the body it's very manly it's very manly I'm not used to it that's not not used to man smells not used to man smells um well as someone who is used to man smells this one comes heavily recommended for me I love it and also I think the bottle is very sheet yeah um so yeah this is my latest find that I'm obsessed with what have you found this week so I've also got perfume I don't have it on me but it's the seven virtues perfume I'd be like a sweet smell okay really oh so this that's the opposite yeah yeah yeah yeah i'm like a really sweet it smells like summer it's called strawberry jam and it's like imagine it's strawberry pistachios vanilla it's just a really really lovely smell yeah but also fashion finds you you must know kwameo do see i do when you put this on i yeah he's got love he's just announced his new ss20 26 and it is beautiful there is a dress there and it's got like gold buttons and it's like Funnel neck is beautiful.

14:10So much so, my friend is currently in LA. I made her go to the store and try on every item of clothing that I wanted. And apparently, yeah, we were FaceTimed the whole time. Apparently FaceTime shopping is just as fun as real live shopping. Yeah, yeah, that was a really good friend. Yeah, and she's like got the bits for me and I cannot wait for her to get back home so I can like, but the dress is, it has got voosh in down the side of it. Oh, babe. It's one of those dresses that you just have forever and ever and keep bringing it out. And that's what I'm trying to be now, like a little statement, girl.

14:38Yeah, and also like timeless pieces. Exactly. That are really versatile. You can wear again and again and pop out. But yeah, he's an amazing Ghanaian American designer. Love his stuff. For me, I have discovered a new handbag brand. Martha the brand. They are a small kind of bag brand, but they've got really great colors. Obviously for me, being a color girly. So they are my number one find this week. And also I got it last week, or it got delivered, I had to get it on pre-order. I have just bought my newest spring summer designer handbag. Which one? Which is always a big deal. Like I always say, buying a designer handbag will never not be a big deal for me.

15:20Oh, always, yeah. I haven't even worn it yet because I haven't done the unboxing video because there will also be an unboxing video. But I need something. So you've got to introduce it to the world. Exactly. Okay, so I've got an opinion about unboxing videos. Yeah. So I don't believe in them. I don't think you should do them. Because I think you should just look like someone who it's not a big deal. of course I have a No, you're so rich in a vanilla It's just a bag It's just a bag You'll see it when I carry it So you're not going to tell her what she looks like because you haven't done the unboxing yet No, I can tell you because by the time this goes out I will have done the unboxing Oh, okay, God, wow Exclusive It is the new Loewe Amazonia It is electric blue It's about this size square will fit my laptop in Oh God, she's big.

16:08Yeah, yeah. Some other pieces. As soon as I saw it on the catwalk, it literally was like love at first sight. So, Loise, you're going to see it. Like, it's going to be attached to my life. I can't wait to meet her. Yeah, same.

16:24Before we move on to our favourite celebrity moments of the week, have you subscribed? Like, I don't mean to sound threatening, as Josh said earlier, but I just really, really would love and appreciate it. If you could please hit the subscribe button, it really does help us out. Thank you. Now, celebrity moment. It has been... Celebrity week. It's been a week. We've obviously just come for the hair off at the back of the Oscars. You might have seen that we were all up all night. You were doing the Oscars, which was great, talking about best dressed. But yeah, you, Josh, want to talk about... Yeah, so firstly, I've got an opinion.

17:04like what the fuck happens to people having fun? Yeah. Say more. Yeah, because like I found that whole Oscars red carpet so dry. Like, and I mean, as much as we can be like, oh, that was a nice dress. Like you're not gonna be talking about those dresses in 10 years time. No one's gonna be talking about them. I have to say, I said this on the night when we were kind of obviously reviewing everything. Like people look lovely, but it was one of the most boring red carpets that I'd seen and have really, but I will say everyone killed it at Vanity Fair. They did. I wish I'd stayed up for that. If you're going to turn up for the after party, turn up for the actual event too.

17:41Like don't save it for the after party when you're bumping and grinding, give it to us up front. That's what I kind of felt about the Oscars this year. It just felt a bit dry, but we do need to talk about Timothee Chalamet and the falling down to earth of our sweet angel. I've got a lot of opinions about this. Obviously, if you don't know, or you've been living under a rock, timothy chalamet really shaded the theater and the ballet and the ballet and the opera community and was like it's like a dying art and i'm glad to be in an art that's formed that's thriving which also you're like lol have you been to cina world recently babe it's dead sorry hon literally closing down the cinema but sure yeah sure meanwhile people are dressing up to the nines go to the opera in the theater in the ballet but you know it's dying yeah and i just I've got a couple opinions about this one is have we just built him up too much and that has the pile on been too much because we've just expect too much of him or has he just become a bit of a spoiled brat and it's just saying opinions that for the sake of it and he's not really that in touch with the real world anymore I just feel like very let down by him yeah but then also not shocked at the same time yeah I'd say I'm not shocked I think it's one of those moments where he probably he hasn't spoken a lot previously.

19:01And I think that was part of his allure, that he was this moody actor that did these really great roles. And now he's with the Kardashian. He's found his voice. How old is he? He's only 30. I thought he was younger. So my train of thought was going to be, he's going to watch this back in years to come and be like, oh, I just got a bit overexcited. He's 30. That is actually... But no, 30 is like... That's a grown age. I think he just said something that he should have only said in his group chat. Yeah. Yes. It should have never left the group chat. It should have just been like a little cocky thing he said in the group chat.

19:37Like, lucky me, boy. I get to earn all this money. Also, that'd be such... Like, if someone put that in the group chat, I'd be like, you're a dick. Yeah, you need to pipe down. You have to see what group chat it is. It's a group chat with everyone else that's clearly quite rich and new world. Like, he was having that conversation. He doesn't have a job. He was having that conversation. You don't do it with your mate who's not getting the way they handbag. Yeah, exactly. He was having that conversation with Matthew McConaughey. who actually laughed as well. He hasn't been shaded for it at all. And this is the thing, I feel like people get to this point where they're like, right, we're now going to take that person down.

20:08Oh yeah, definitely. And we're going to take that person down because now they're going out with Kylie Jenner and we don't like that about them because they betrayed what we thought they were all about. And I do kind of understand this whole idea about Timothee Chalamet. I remember watching him on the Graham Norton show when he was first coming out. He was like, I'm just so happy to be here. And everywhere he was, he was like, I'm just so happy to be here. And now he's probably just got a little bit too big for his boobs. I feel like he's lost that, the humbleness. Maybe he's not as grounded as he was back then.

20:32Why is he the person who matters what he says? So bloody what if he said that? Yeah. He's one man, like so. And it also comes back to there's so much more other stuff we should be talking about, right? Literally. And that has taken up, I mean, we've just done it, but it just takes up so much airtime when you should be actually talking about the people you should be celebrating, like Michael B. Jordan winning. Exactly. Which is like game changing. Being the sixth black actor ever to only win it in the whole Oscars history. And his speech was amazing when he was like, I stand on the shoulders of people who came before.

21:01I know, and he said everyone's names. I know. Which is crazy because how long has the Oscars been going for? Okay. That's insane. Yeah. Okay. Okay. For a little while. Whatever. So like you say, that is what we should be talking about. I think every famous person should have their day. And once you've had your day and people try to drag you on, then you can come in with your life happily. I think if you never have it and you're always upheld so there's one day the fall is going to be mighty. Yeah. So I think if you have it quite early on and people expect less from me, in coming of your career just doing whatever you want rather than being like I don't want to make a mistake.

21:30Yeah. Like I'm almost scared about Michael B. George and I don't want anything. I don't want him to do anything wrong ever. In fact, I want him to hide away in a box and never talk to anyone. You're like, don't freak. Because if he says one thing wrong it's going to be like, whoa. But that's interesting. Do you think it's actually going to affect Timothy's career? Because I actually think it could. Do you think? Like, you know, Steven Spielberg came out and basically slated him for making those comments. No way. And like, if you've got directors who are making decisions about big roles, casting.

21:59You're really cutting your nose off to spite your face. I don't mean to call Stephen a clout chaser, but that's quite clout chaser-y. Stephen. Let me know. Stephen, come. If you're watching. Because where were you to talk about these, like the theatre and the ballet, before he said this? You guys wasn't encouraging it before. You wasn't like, everyone go to the theatre, go to the ballet. But now, Timothy says something, oh, now you've got a point, Stephen. Yeah. And I wonder if Misty Copeland was invited before or after. I agree. I'm so intrigued by that. I know, yeah. Because they really amped that up afterwards.

22:28Yeah, they did. And I was like, hmm, because Misty is like the most incredible person. Well, I feel like it might've been planned, who knows, but she essentially came out of retirement to do that performance. Yeah. So. But it was a real great like, fuck you. I wonder how he felt in the room. He was like, I'm like, I'm gonna walk down. Literally sat in the second row. And she's like, yeah. But yeah, that was also a great opening performance. Do you know what's so funny about the outfits of the Oscars though? Cause I follow so many like fashion people and really stylish people and everyone's opinions were so contradictory.

23:01I see one be like, this outfit's disgusting. And the next girl is like, wow, she looks beautiful. I was just like, wow, like fashion is really - You just can't win, can you? It's literally, it's so subjective. And I think that's like, not the hardest thing, but when I would be styling people for red carpet, you can never take an opinion to heart because everyone is going to have something different to say. but I do think on the most part, everyone looked nice at the Oscars. But like I said, the Vanity Fair is where I literally, I woke up. Jessica Alba. Oh, I haven't seen this. I was not expecting that.

23:36I know, literally one of my best dress, Jessica Alba. It's a really sleek column, black kind of sweetheart neckline bustier dress. With the feathers at the bottom. Yes, I have seen that. Yes, she looked beautiful. Yes. I think it was really unexpected from her. That's why I've said her first. Kendall Jenner in the baby blue. Someone else says she's like a bridesmaid. So it's so contradictory. Which one is it? Sarah Pidgeon. In that Calvin Klein number. I was like, that's genius. And Tiana Taylor, guys. Tiana Taylor looked better at Vanity Fair. I prefer that to her. I don't agree with that. I thought she looked better at the Oscars.

24:16Do you? She didn't look wrong. I can't go wrong. I'm not going to turn either one of those down, guys. I might really.

24:25We are going to move on to Hot Topic. Let's go. We've all been watching the same thing this week, other than The Middle. Yeah, not that. Yeah, apart from The Middle. I did take a break from The Middle to watch this. I did. Josh, what have we all been watching? Louis Farouk's documentary about the Manosphere has hit Netflix, and it is a very confronting exploration of the manosphere and the people behind it and the people who have been sucked into it as well. I have so many thoughts about this. The main one I always think about when I hear about the manosphere is where the fuck are the male allies for women?

25:02Because where are the vocal men who are calling male behavior out, who are stepping up, who are doing things for equality? Because it feels like it's almost like silence. It's like on International Women's Day, which was just before this came out, I saw no other men posting about International Women's Day. I never see any men posting about women's rights and these really key issues that we need to start facing. Like when you've got 50 % of Gen Z boys and men thinking that feminism has gone too far, like we've got to stop thinking that this is a small issue. And I think this is something that's very reductive about this discussion.

Read the full transcript

25:36And I get a lot of clap back from men in my DMs being like, well, you know, it's only a small minority. And I'm like, it's not. But that's what I think the issue is, is that everyone thinks, oh, it's just a small problem and it doesn't affect them. Like they think it's like a dark underworld of the internet that no one goes to, but it's not. It's everywhere. It's so much bigger. And like, for instance, there's like a huge rise in anti-abortion stances amongst generations now. And so we need to start having actual constructive conversations where we reach across to people and say, why do you think this?

26:08This is my lived experience. This is what I'm living through. like trying to get them to understand more because they're just living in a vacuum. And if we keep pretending they're living in a vacuum and it's not around us and it's not next to us, like it could literally be your husband. It could be your son. I think that was what was so shocking. I can't remember H TikTok Oh H-T TikTok Yeah yeah yeah the part that was so shocking to me was the relationship between him and his mum because obviously he's not going to clap back to his mum he was mopping up the floor doing whatever but then also she knows what he's doing and doesn't really stop because her thing was she separated him from the thing that he's doing and I think that's what it is a lot of them don't believe what they're saying they just love the attention it gets especially that boy There were parts of it where I genuinely burst out laughing.

26:57And I was like, this is not meant to be funny. Why am I laughing? But it was a bit where Louis III was asking, what does your mum think about this? He was like, my mum hates racism. My mum hates homophobia. He was like, but I'm not homophobic. I was just like, what do you think you're doing? Like, what is happening right now? And I think the whole time it was just like, you little boy. And I think even that is quite a reductive way to see it because it's like, they have too much power to call them just little boys and ignore it. And I said the longest time Are they just little boys Just ignore them But they're like No they are influencing So many young boys Like I'm seeing them Walking around And boys are like Chasing for a picture And I'm like wait And I saw One of them is homeless From trying to like Complete the life That they had Which is insane And I saw a really good take on it The problem is Is that all of those men Are nearly there They're like There was a problem Men are treated like this Men are lonely Blah blah blah blah And they're nearly there They should blame patriarchy They should blame capitalism And they're like No but women They're the ones At the last minute, you just got it wrong.

27:54This is a problem. All of these things are a problem. And it is bad that you feel like this, but it's not women's fault. But I think every time they're like, women. And it's just like, that's not... That's it. And also, you are like, forgetting you were birthed by a woman. Yeah, like birthed. I always think that. Like that, for me, is the fundamental. But isn't that a low bar that we... Because I hate it when people say to men, oh, would you treat your sister like that? Would you treat your mum like that? You can love and respect women outside of the relation to you. Yeah, yeah. It can just be because they're another human being.

28:21It doesn't have to be because you identify them as a sister or as a mom. I could be nobody to you and I deserve respect because of who I am. Not because I'm related. I don't see men and think, oh, he could be your dad. Because if I did think that, we'd finish it. We'll be fighting. We'll be going to town. It shouldn't be that. My whole thing with it as well, this whole like, when they start talking about their fathers. And then I was like, all of your fathers have let you down. But yet you still see the fault to be women. It was so fascinating to me. What I found quite interesting about it was everyone was like, it was so shocking, but it was almost not shocking to me.

28:57It wasn't shocking. I'm so aware of this. But it's because we're on the internet. Yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah. That's it, most people. We spend a lot of time on the internet. I'm not like, I'd seen people comment that, were mothers that were saying they had no idea this had happened. I mean. This existed. And I feel like it was the same conversation when adolescence came out. And obviously it plays into that with the red pill, all of that situation. You have to think as well, we're in London or if you're in New York or LA or wherever but if you look at the wider UK you could be in a small town and this could be completely brand new to you but it's happening like isn't there a stat where a teenage boy only has to swipe seven times to see something as misogynistic oh my gosh so it's so it's so prevalent and I think we've actually got to wake up to it and one of the things I think the documentary didn't do that it should have done it should have brought in the voices of the people who have been affected by the manosphere yes I thought that as well Like why are we not asking women what it's like?

29:51That could be part two from Louis. They need to do it. That could be a follow up. Like when they were like tracking down these older gay men. Oh my God. And then like beating them to a pole. That's it, the vigilante. And also why the police not involved. Well, exactly. Like that's also, you've got the evidence right there. They're being filmed doing that. Louis is a better man than me because he does a really good job at just looking like I'm not judging. Like you can say what you want to me. Because I'd be like, are you an idiot? are you actually street pissed I would have been like you're going off yeah but he's very like and he's good he's really good at like fish out of water experiences we had him on the podcast once and he was just there like wide eyed but it was one of my favourite episodes because it's like people are cheating like he's so like what is going on in the world sort of thing oh he but it's really it's worth watching and but like he was well I wasn't shocked yeah a lot of it was like oh yeah I know these things yeah there is definitely a whole world out there I think it's a great wake up call to be like speak to the men in your life right and ask what their opinions about these things are and to galvanize them into action rather than just sitting there and just not not being active allies especially the teenage boys that's who i'm really worried about it so i've got four nephews yeah youngest one he's still a baby so that's fine but the rest of them are coming to teenage yeah i've got teenage nephew yeah exactly and that's who you worry about and have to make sure that like you say they know that they need to be an ally.

31:15And again, what you said, it doesn't need to be your sister or your mum, just have respect for women, full stop. Yeah. Blanket.

31:27Oh, after that. Passionate. Passionate. It's good for loose women, guys, isn't it? It's not funny. No, I never actually really got into loose women. Did you not? Oh, there was a time. It was such a good time. for Christmas once got me the Loose Women After Hours DVD. Was that when they went to the pub or something? No, no, it was like, it was still the same studio but they talked about like kinkier stuff, like things they couldn't have during the day. Right. And I was obsessed. That DVD was played a lot. Like, I loved it. It was like being on the night out with my girls, me, Denise, Cal before she became problematic.

32:04Yeah. We are going to move on to this night. Dilemma. My favourite. Let's jump into it. I know you are, this is your bag. This is my bag. I love a dilemma. First one, I'm at 34, I'm really unhappy in my corporate job. I'm paid well, but am I stupid to start from scratch? No, you're not stupid to start from scratch. I feel like I've been having so many conversations with people that are like, I think you do get to your mid 30s, you're like, well, this can't be it. Is this it? Wait a minute. Is this it? And I'm like, and it's really weird because you spent your whole life being like, going to uni, getting the right tracks, and paying for the right jobs, doing the right courses, getting the corporate job, getting a lot of like a well-paid corporate job as well.

32:43And especially in this economy to be like, do I leave that? Yes. But I believe in an F-R fund, a fuck-off fund. Oh yeah, I love that. Yeah, yeah, yeah. And I remember reading this article years ago that's genuinely changed my life. And the idea with it was like, always have a fund in case you need to tell anything to get lost. Like in case you need to leave a job, leave a partner, leave your home, whatever, just have a bit of money together. And then, so I will say in this economy, you can start again, but please give yourself a cushion. because to just be like, I quit and then have nothing. You have to have a plan.

33:11Yes, I think have a plan for sure. And if you are in a well-paid job, start saving because you can save a really nice chunk that gives you some breather to actually figure out what it is that you want or if you know what you want, it gives you time to kind of work towards that and have this cushion. I was listening to Candice talk the other day about starting again. It's a great podcast episode. She was saying about it and she was just like, try to envision yourself meeting, in the future you. So if it's like the you you want to be at 34, the you you want to be at 40, what's she doing? What's she wearing?

33:42Is she drinking coffee? What's her house like? And then when you imagine that person, do one thing a day to get towards being her. Yeah. I love that. Which is such good advice, isn't it? And I kept going, okay, cool. What is 40-year-old me doing? What's her outfit? Where's her home? Like, what's she having for dinner? Like, does she go for walks? Does she exercise? What's her body like? Like, all of those things. And then when you think of it, it makes you excited too, so again, because you see it's possible. Yeah. But also then you meet her. Yeah. You're feeding into those things. Yeah, exactly.

34:09You're becoming that person. So I don't think it's wrong to start again. In fact, I encourage it. I 100 % encourage it. Like we literally have one life. Do not stand a job where you are unhappy. And I also believe in not living with a what if. Yeah. That is my biggest thing. Yeah. Like what's the worst that can happen? It doesn't work out. You move on to the next thing, but you will never have that thing in your head thinking, oh, what if I tried that? And also you've got a CV. even if you quit and it doesn't you can just get another job in that field like I said don't act like you're starting again from zero you've got history you're starting again from all of that experience and skills and I think that when I start when I think about starting again I'm like I'm going to start from nowhere you're not you've got a history of all of this work that you've done that's going to back you into whatever you do next so you'll be fine it's so true and I also think the one thing you can do as well if you're in like a well paid job as well is do stuff on the side so that when you are ready to actually leave when you hand that notice in and you have that three months, you've set up like the website, do the course, get all your ducks in a row and use that company to your advantage and that paycheck to your advantage.

35:12Yeah, for sure. Great advice guys, all round. Next one, what is the best way to get over a confidence slump in your thirties? Oh God, I go through a confidence journey every single bloody day. Every other day. I go to the pits of bad confidence sometimes. Like really bad. Like I go through that probably routinely, like once every March. I'm not even joking. I don't know why, it's always March for me. Like it's like January and it comes to a T and it comes to a head in March. I think the thing you've got to remember is that confidence isn't linear. And I think we get so obsessed with this idea that we're gonna arrive at being confident.

35:50And then that's it. And that's it. It's gonna be there forever. And it doesn't work like that. You are gonna have confidence dips morning, noon, and night. and they can come for like two seconds during the day like even doing what i'm doing there's so many no's you get behind the scenes there's so many everyone sees the yeses and they don't necessarily see the no's yeah and i think the thing that has really helped me is to try and regulate my nervous system so that when i do have confidence dips they don't affect me so much yeah so it's like walking the 10 000 steps a day it's like doing the peloton once a day it's like managing those things that when the the difficult things happen to me or i take the confidence dips i'm not as like it's not so much of a crisis yeah um I think that's the best way of doing it and it's to reach out and talk to your friends like obviously I'm so big about the great chats and getting out and having those conversations speak to your friends like oh I'm not feeling that confident at the moment like try and get that boost from people around you you think everyone in life is confident right or they they arrive at this level yeah but actually they're going through the same thing as what you are yeah and I think a lot of people say look at me and think oh my god you're such a confident person but oh my god my lack of self-belief is like chronic so i've really had to like work on it when you feel you're most confident like write those things down what is it and tap into those so is it having like for me if i'm wearing a great outfit instantly i'm like oh that boosts my confidence and i feel like i can go out in the world or is it having a great conversation with your best friend and then you're thinking oh actually yes i can tackle this yeah tap into all of those and yeah concentrate on the good rather than what is lacking yeah also I'm not above faking it until you make it yeah I think there are times when it's not a feeling thing you just have to act like you feel it and I think eventually that will then become true speak it into existence yeah like you have to break it into you like you wake up and like oh I don't feel great whatever wear the thing that makes you feel the best if you have an outfit that like every time I wear that outfit I feel amazing put it on I don't care if you're just going to the supermarket yeah just put it on.

37:47This is what I do every day. Literally just put it on. Whatever it is that you know that in the past this has made me feel good go back to that. And just like fake it. I honestly, I don't see the problem in like the faking it until you make it and eventually it becomes true. I think body language is really important for that as well. I think we get so used to being like this the whole time. And actually, pull your shoulders back, babe. Head up. Head up. Walk with strength. Walk with power. And you convince your body. Make that eye contact with people. Yes. And you convince your body into being confident.

38:18One. Oh, I like this one. How do you set boundaries with friends without causing drama? How old are we? Do we not know? Okay. Because I do think there is a certain, I think when you are like in your early twenties or teenager, it feels quite like more dramatic than what it is. But I think as you get older, everyone's just like, they're like natural boundaries. I think just kind of arise. I think the key thing about boundaries that people forget is, is that other people have boundaries too. and we become so obsessed with being like my boundaries my boundaries my boundaries my boundaries i'm like babe that other person has boundaries too yeah and you've got to be aware of other people's boundaries in this discussion and don't boundary yourself so much you become so restricted in life as well i think that's really important you've got to step outside your boundary in order to build confidence to build new relationships and those kind of things so pick a couple yeah don't have like so many don't have to have like a list of 10 like yeah Have these things that are like the cornerstones of your boundaries that you will not let people cross.

39:17Non-negotiables. And also forgive yourself if you do let those boundaries go a little bit, like especially if you're new to them. Like I was so unboundaried. I'm like a chronic people pleaser. So I've been trying to like say no more. Hence the tears. Hence the tears. Do you know about the tears, Tolly? No. Explain the tears to Tolly. Yeah, so the tears are when I put my friends into a tear system. Oh, right, okay. so we've got tier one which are the people who you will always turn up for you know they will always turn up so focus on those yeah then you've got the tier twos who are kind of like the ones you know would be there for you but it probably come with the caveat and vice versa then you've got like the friends you like hanging out with they're good for fun but they're not like a serious and then you've got like the like people you know dregs like the acquaintances like the people who you know, it would never show up for you ever.

40:06And so if it's easy for you, it's easy for them, do it. And actually focus on turning up for those people and creating your boundaries for those people. So you're turning up for like your best friend when you need to, and also so that you're also prioritizing time with them so you feel like you're getting more. And you don't overwork yourself. You can't be everything to everyone. Yes. You just really, really can't be. And I think even with the boundaries thing, I've got a big thing that I think we are boundary in ourselves into loneliness. Yes, I agree. I agree. And you're like, no, no. And it's like individualism.

40:36And I'm like, guys. We are like literally so lonely in society. It's now a world pandemic. And the thing is, you're so right about this. I'm saying this every day. We've become so obsessed with me, me, me, me, me. Self-development, self-me. I can do this on my own. And actually, we're meant to be designed to be in community with each other. So you have to reach out to people. And you have to be there for other people too. And there's always that classic phrase. Everyone wants a village, but no one wants to be a villager. Turn up for other people. Show up. I am a villager. I love my village so much.

41:11I probably should set more boundaries because I will literally be there at all times for everyone. But I think if it's people like that. But I also enjoy that. If it also nourishes you, that's great. And also, every time you need something, someone's going to be there every single time because you know what you've given to your village. And I just feel like everyone's just kind of like, I'm a boundaried person. And I'm just like, this is leading us down a dark, lonely path. Because you're going to become so boundaried. No one even wants to say anything to you. I don't want to offend her. I don't know if she'll do that.

41:40Like you said, have your non-negotiables. But what are your boundaries? Because why should they set drama? If you're saying, I don't want to go out on a Saturday night, that shouldn't cause drama. That's a fine boundary. However, last dilemma for us. This is probably for me and you, Trolley. I always end up overpacking. How do I build a more streamlined wardrobe? I can't answer that because I don't believe in a small streamlined wardrobe. Why would, why? No, obviously like why? Unless you need it for like the space. I don't believe in a streamlined anything. I'm a very like have all the things you want to have as long as you can afford it and it's like doing you well.

42:19Like if you're packing for a holiday and you want options, what's on that? Exactly. I mean there's things like the classic take a white shirt or take a pair of jeans and four different tops. That's boring, why would I do that? I was away a couple of months ago and I took three suitcases each way in 25 kg. And yes, I came back with a suitcase I'd not been touched or worn, but I had no regrets. You had options. You had options. How long were you away for? It was a while, it was like six weeks. Oh, that's fine. Yeah, exactly. I thought it was like a one week holiday, babe. No, no, no, it wasn't, no, it was like six weeks.

42:53I was away for a while. I also am of your school of thinking. I am a notorious overpacker I will say I've got better and the way that I've done that is with outfit planning so if you are going on holiday it's a 7 day holiday right I need 7 day looks, 7 evening looks 7 bikinis like just count everything but what if you wake up and you're not in the mood for those things now what now what obviously pack a couple of extras let's round it up to 10 for a 7 day holiday and hopefully that will help my problem is is i pack like never the day before it's always the day of basically yeah yeah yeah so like i haven't got time to be put outfit playing by this point so maybe it's like pre-planning is key this is what i'm saying so if you're overpacking and don't want to then yeah planning is definitely like where did australia for example i was like I don't have time to overpack here, even though I had a good weight allowance, but more than anything, I just didn't want to like carry a lot of things that was just me.

44:01So I essentially did plan all of my outfits, took pictures in them, created a little mood board and I was like, bam, good to go. Just break this down to me. When does the planning begin before the trip? As soon as she knows it's happening. I'd say like three weeks before. What? You are the most organized person in the world. Sorry, you're so organized. That brings me out of the hive. Saying that, I didn't pack, I packed the day off. But you had everything that you had ideas in your head. So you've basically done all the packing in your brain. Yeah, yeah. Guys, that's it, we are at the end. Thank you so much for such a great episode, honestly.

44:39I could talk to you guys all day. Thank you for joining us, and if you haven't already, please subscribe, share it, tell your friend, tell your mom, tell your dog, honestly. anything with an ear we want everyone listening until next time see you later guys

First up, the team dives into the biggest celebrity and culture moments of the week, from the standout looks at the Oscars and Vanity Fair party to the surprisingly divisive reactions to Kendall Jenner’s baby blue gown. They also get into Timothée Chalamet’s controversial comments and ask whether the internet has built him up too much… and whether he really did say something that should’ve stayed in the group chat. Plus, they share their current obsessions, including the hilarious West End play ‘Oh, Mary!’, comfort-watch sitcom ‘The Middle’ and Nana’s recent trip to Melbourne.

Later in the episode, the conversation turns to Louis Theroux’s new documentary ‘The Manosphere’, with a powerful discussion about male allyship, misogyny and the influence of online culture on young men today. Finally, they answer your dilemmas, from changing careers in your 30s and rebuilding confidence to setting boundaries with friends and how to stop overpacking for holidays.
