In short
New York dating culture and city life, comparing London vs NYC (energy, nightlife, food, reservations/lines, shopping, neighborhoods, hustle culture), plus restaurant and coffee recommendations.
Guests
Chrissy Rutherford, former Harper’s Bazaar editor turned full-time content creator; runs newsletter Forward Joy and has a podcast; also an astrology-focused creator. Tinks, radio host, author, and content creator.
Key claims
NYC is more spontaneous and exhausting than London; people date “like a hobby” (high volume, less quality), and reservation/line culture is ruining the vibe (including paying for tables or line-waiting). London nightlife feels more elevated; London food is better due to higher quality/regulations.
Notable examples
London Fashion Week at The 22; NYC favorites include St. Ambrose, Supper (spaghetti limon), Raphs, Emerson & Grove, Catch (back), Frenchette (Spritzette), Corner Store (viral lines), Toby’s Estate/Interlude/Oslo coffee, and neighborhood vibes: SoHo crowded, Tribeca family-grounded, Lower East Side grimy/college. Dating: Chrissy dates more in London; Europeans perceived as higher emotional intelligence.

I'm going to let you do your own bios because I'm not going to do it justice.
41Tell the people who you are. I am a former editor from Harper's Bazaar, of course. And now I am a full-time content creator. I write a newsletter called Forward Joy. There's also a podcast. I feel like you're also my social media spiritual guidance. guidance. Astrology. Right? Online. Everything I know about astrology, I know for you. Moonlighting as a, yeah, as a little astrologer in training. Love that B. Thanks. Over to you. I'm a radio host and an author and a content creator.
19You guys are both here because A, we love you. But B, we are we're here to talk about new york we're coming off the end of a week of some discovery for sheer lux in new york a possible look at what a sheer lux usa could look like out here and both of you are very uniquely positioned in that not only do you know new york incredibly well but you also know london and i mean a bit of background you grew up in london yeah we went to high school together we did despite what your accent i know i just i just learned this today i did not realize I know I actually had a British accent in high school. Very much so.
54We had a twang. I had a little twang but I lost it when I moved and so I grew up there until I was almost 19. Yeah and Chrissy what's your connection to London? Now I'm splitting my time between New York and London since 2022 and when I was an editor at Harper's Bazaar I used to cover London Fashion Week so that's what gave me a little taste of it. I was going twice a year and I just I made some nice friends and you know I was building a network there and I was like yeah I can see myself living here. Bit of both. Yeah I know it's really the best of both worlds. And we always start the Showlots podcast with what we're wearing so can I pass it over to you?
29What do you wear? I am wearing what I wear when I don't know what to wear and I feel vile and I'm like I need to throw something on my uniform which is a Guzio. They make the best knit tees long sleeve and short sleeve. I didn't know that brand. It's the best. Okay. These are Evie Denim the low-rise baggy my followers know it's like my favorite jean. It's it's actually a perfect piece of denim manolo flats um and yeah that's it glasses these are actually guzio as well guzio and key yeah i need some guzio american brand yeah she's incredible she's an amazing designer she's the cutest she's the new york downtown it girl i'm the biggest fan all of her clothes are incredible and she's just she's just amazing okay well there's recommendation one for you um chrissy what are you wearing my jacket's from primark i just went to the opening in new york city they have a new flagship very exciting for me wild i love when you know london stores come to new york these are the silver lake london jeans i know i'm i know these are my all-time favorite high-waisted straight leg jeans i have them in five washes i wear them non-stop and then my ballet flats are from margo super comfortable yes um do you mind quickly these are tibby and I've absolutely destroyed them, but they were good until that happened.
46They look like jeans, but they're trackies, which I know. Oh, my God. I know. They're the best. I've got my gold Bottegas on under here. I don't know if they can see our shoes. And this jacket is Rua. Do you guys know that brand? R-U-A-D-H. No. So she's a Scottish girl in New York. Oh, I've seen it. Called Jack. Yeah. Based over here. Went to her place in Tribeca this week. Like, one of the most insane apartments I've seen in this city. It's gorgeous. And it's cool, isn't it? The sleeve is great. Yeah, it's great. also white jacket terrible for me for makeup i know i'm like my makeup's on my collar we're going to talk about new york versus london there's so much synergy between the two cities but they are also so different like we were just talking a bit about the energy differences between the cities and i was saying that i find new york so exhausting despite being a londonette yes you were both agreeing yes it is there's just so much happening but there's also there's no place like New York.
38And I think the energy here is so like unique and specific and, you know, just the overall vibe. Like I always tell people there's also like a level of spontaneity that exists here that does not exist anywhere else in the world. Like I really miss that when I'm in London. Yeah. You can call your friend and say, meet me in half an hour and it's no problem. Or you'll, you know, everybody has their friends on find my friends and you're like, oh, you're here. Like let's meet for a drink or like, oh, I'm right here. Let's let's go out. And it's so spontaneous. that's one of the best parts about New York.
07Yeah, and like on the weekends, like you leave your apartment to go to brunch and then you don't end up coming home until like three o 'clock in the morning. Yeah, or the next day. Right, because you used to be in LA and I feel like that's what's next, but it was a big reason for you to be back here. Totally, I actually have always thought London and LA are very similar because they are so massive. Right, yes. Different neighborhood is like a whole town in and of itself and has a different vibe. And, you know, you can live an hour away from your friend and both live in London or both live in LA.
36So it's just totally different. Whereas the proximity to everything and everyone here makes for more of a spontaneous, you know, day-to-day vibe. Yeah, love that. What do you think are like the things that each city gets right? Like if we're not putting them against each other, what is it that you love about London? And what is it that you love about New York? Aside from the kind of fluidity and the spontaneity of it? I love going out in London. I love to go out and I'm a creature of the night. And I was just there for London Fashion Week. And I had some of the most fun nights out. Now, that might just be novelty.
08You know, it's a new set of restaurants, a new set of clubs and whatever. But I felt like it just it felt more elevated and kind of really, really, really fun. But again, might be novelty. So where did you go? I went to the 22 every night. It was so fun. I love it. I don't know. It also could have been that it was London Fashion Week and it was just a vibe. But I just I feel like there's a lot of cool nightlife going on. Can I tell you, we've been staying at the 22 here, which is probably my favorite hotel I've ever stayed at in New York. So you sneak into the GQ party. I can't talk about it. I tried so hard.
41And you didn't go? You didn't get in? You guys, Hudson and Connor were on top of me as I was asleep. They were on the roof and I was in bed. I tried all my... You said their energy. Literally, there's photos of them in the lift. I'm like, that's my fucking lift. Yeah. I tried every avenue, but I tried too late. I tried on like Sunday. Right. And you didn't pull those strings hard enough. I didn't pull the strings hard enough. I tried at the door. The man was happy. Like I wasn't going to go there. Like anyway, whatever. It was a whole thing. But it's unreal here. Chrissy, what do you love about London?
11I love all the green spaces. Yeah. Like it's just so nice to walk around and like be able to pop into a little garden. And I live quite close to Regent's Park. So I do daily walks there. And I also love the food there. I agree. I hate, I cannot stand on people say that there isn't good food in London. I agree. I agree. I think that's the first telltale sign that someone doesn't know what they're talking about. I think the food in London is way better than the food in New York. The sea actually rivals. Because it starts with the quality. And I hate to say the annoying thing that every influencer says, but the quality of food in Europe is just so much better.
46I literally don't get blooded when I eat the pasta there, but it's true. There's different regulations on the food. The milk here fucks my stomach. Oh my God. What is the milk here? You taste like a strawberry from Waitrose in the UK. You taste the strawberry here. It's a different, it's not the food. So true. And I think the food is way better, way better in London. Okay, yeah. I'm a little disillusioned with the food in New York. I'm having like a moment with the food in New York. We're interested in it. I feel like I just have fatigue. I feel like one restaurant does something and then all the other restaurants copy the vibe.
16And then here, I don't know how it is in London right now. We have this like exhaustion with some restaurants and people are just so obsessed with them and they'll wait in line and it's like i'll tell you one thing that is ruining new york right now is line culture i don't know if you've spotted it i'm aware on my way here the line for cats's deli i took a video of it to send to my friends it's it's actually out of control okay this is last year my whole thing was like get less screen time no phones this year my soapbox is if you wait in line for a food item you need to reevaluate your life choices i don't care if it's a pistachio cronut i don't i don't care what it is that's not a third space like waiting in line is not a good use of two hours of your salary and it's completely ruined like soho west village all those places i'm like you guys the matcha down the street is just as good this is it how much better can it be that's why i literally still go to all the same places i went to 10 15 years ago because i just i can't deal with the trendy okay food scene here yeah so tell me where where are you going in york i mean I love St.
16Ambrose and it's sometimes overrun by tourists, but I actually kind of appreciate that. Like sometimes it will be like Lauren Santo Domingo having lunch and then like a family. Yeah. I also love supper. That's one of my old school favorite restaurants that I've been going to since. Yeah, I think even before I lived in New York City. Where is it? It's on second and a very close to here. I need to go. It's also it's the same owner as Little Frankie's and Frank's. Oh, okay. But supper is kind of like the one that doesn't get as much love. And that's why it's good. What kind of food? Italian. It's amazing.
54And they made the spaghetti limon famous in New York. Oh, okay. Yeah. I can't imagine. What about you? What do you like to eat here? I eat. Despite being disenfranchised with this. I know. Okay. I love rafts. Raphs is amazing. And it's open all day. So you've been going to have a lovely sit. Yeah. I just absolutely love to go get a cappuccino and have a nice sit there. great croissants too great croissants all their pastries are amazing um i'm actually going for dinner tonight and i love emerson grove it's my friend's restaurant but it's my favorite pizza and i love the bar great great great martinis i'm dying to go to a rush that's one on my list that's very good thing but again it's like so trendy i'm gonna have to wait for like either wait in line for four hours or like in two years i'll get to go can we talk about the corner store because that that's the founder of orash and i feel like yeah i mean obviously there's always been a bit of a like you know hot restaurant culture in new york but i feel like that was the beginning is it tiktok like that was the beginning of the like i think and wasn't it because of taylor swift was that a little bit of it and it's also viral food items which right listen if something is amazing then give credit where credit's due but i do kind of feel like some restaurants are reverse engineering their way into being viral on tiktok where they're like well if we make a you know like a chicken pizza upside down cake then like yeah you know some tiktoker is gonna make a video about it and so you know i i don't know i feel like a couple restaurants in new york kind of do that but i know i've only been to the corner store for like private events i've never even gone on a regular night the food is amazing yeah it's great like i love it it's just when i see people waiting right like in every weather it's like quite near my house so i walk by quite a lot and it's like it will be 90 degrees and there people wait from 3 30 it will be snowing and people will be waiting from 3 30 and i'm like just make sure it's worth your time with anything with any waiting in line you know you could be like hanging out with your friend do like doing something else yeah i also really hate what reservation culture has turned into because i hate making reservations i just want to this is why i also go to older places because i'm like i just want to be able to stroll up and get a table like I'm down to wait like 15, 20 minutes, but like, I don't want to have to hand over my credit card and commit to a hundred dollar like cancellation.
10And also it ruins the vibe. I don't, I don't want to be in a restaurant full of people who knew one month ago at 1159 to be on their computer. Come on. Like you can't have an entire restaurant of people who are like, we've got to get that rest. New York is spontaneous to our point. But I'm proposing that half of every restaurant has to be for walk-ins. It's a creepy vibe of people going, oh, let's just go and check. Maybe we put our name in and go grab a drink. You need that energy. And there was a crazy article last year about the reservations in New York. I remember this. It's an amazing, amazing article.
43I believe it was in The New Yorker. And it's about how the secondhand market has totally destroyed New York. because people will pay like for second hand for a corner store reservation like four thousand dollars and it's like i mean what are we doing here like i don't know it's so it's it's throwing off really bizarre homeostasis of everything there are also platforms now where you can pay like a down payment for like you can pay four hundred dollars yeah to secure your table because you're effectively paying up front you can also pay people to wait in line yeah for something and i'm really scared that london is going to start i know london is already i feel like pretty crazy with the reservations and I just I don't like to abide by those rules like I will still roll up to a place yeah that is booked out just to see if maybe they'll you know or I'll sit I love sitting at the bar I love to sit at the bar so I'm always down for that where it's good to sit at a bar in New York ultra paradise so has a yes it's really they have an incredible cocktail program so fun to sit and have a pasta and like a spritz their country pepe oh so good but Frenchette actually has a very small but wonderful bar, and they have a drink called the Spritzette, and it's so good, and they make amazing martinis, and you can go and sit and split the chicken for two.
02That's what I like to do. Martinis and the chicken for two, and the petite salad to start. Amazing order. One of the things that I've been really excited about this week is that Catch is back. Oh, yes. I love Catch. Catch is cool again. Oh, yeah. I've only been once. A long time ago. I mean, there's the same owners as Orange, Anna's, the Coristal. Okay, I didn't realize. I felt like there was a whole thing with the Real Housewives, right? And it was like, okay, no one go to catch. You can't go to catch. And I went last night. No, it's good. The food is amazing. The food is great. I love it. It's good.
31One of it, to your point before about a crazy chicken pizza. We've been laughing over the course of the week because every coffee shop we walk past, it's like there's a competition to make the most ridiculous. There's no drink. It's insane. Banana, latte, tiramisu, coffee pie. It's out of control. Where are you going for? Good coffee. Okay, I'm going to go ahead. It's already been. I already know your spot. Go on. No, this is. Oh, are you trying to gatekeep? I was going to gatekeep, but it's so good. And it's already like, I can't even go on the weekends anymore. But Toby's Estate in Tribeca is so good.
59I thought Trax was a good place, wasn't it? It's not my place anymore. Okay. But no, no, no bad vibes. Right, right, right. You know, you got to switch it up. Yeah. Also, Interlude is amazing. Amazing coffee. It's so good. What's up? There's two. There's one kind of at the edge of Soho. And then there's one in Tribeca that I love so much. I did wait 20 minutes for a nice coffee at Toby's Estate this weekend. It's just so good. 20 minutes. 20 minutes. Yeah but it was good. You know where else is really good? Oslo. Okay. Oh my god there's this other place in the West Village that you can literally never go but it's called Rhythm Zero.
32Okay. And they have a coconut water iced latte or you can get a matcha with coconut water. It's amazing but like good luck ever going there. Like so the line is like three hours long. I'm like how do you what i was like how do you have time to do that not a third space back in the day i used to love going to saturday surf because they had a cafe there and all the guys that work there are super hot so yeah yeah two for one uh there's one in soho and then there's also one in the west village yeah tell me about the different areas so like if people are watching and listening and you know they've sort of heard of the west village they've heard of tribeca like what are the different vibes in the sort of the kind of core different places that people might be familiar with let's start with soho what's what's the vibe in soho a tourist well a certain section of it yeah i do love soho it's it's great shopping it's great shopping it's kind of where you imagine you know when you're shopping in new york that's where you would go yeah oh my god i used to beg my mom to take me to canal street but i was like in high school there's like happier grocery is on canal now and that's like a the new york equivalent of air one um people like that and then there's so many good shops but it's just very crowded but it's really cool i mean you can't beat the cobblestones you can't beat like an afternoon at vanilla it's um it's fabulous it's just like again you have to wait for like unless you know a person you've got to wait like for a long time there's a theme emerging here about that exactly okay what about tribeca that's your neck of the words right i love it because it's actually not like overrun it's a lot of families which makes me feel very grounded as a 365 party girl I'm like I'm so happy you have a stroller and a husband and a dog um I love to see that so um I I absolutely love my neighborhood I don't want I'm so pissed we just got an Apollo bagel and a Papa bagel two of the most popular bagel places so I'm like I'm like a I'm like bah humbug I'm like no I don't want you here like um because it's just nice that there's there's literally like no trendy restaurants down there either so there's like one what about is lacambe verde still down there no one goes there anymore no it's very popular it's not for me it's not my taste i i'm that might be really bad okay i haven't been there since i don't think since the pandemic so well the granite hotel is like very very fabulous and it's one of my favorite spas i love to spa like it's my number one hobby and it's the best spot it's like so amazing i've actually been sitting on a gift card to shibui since before the pandemic i need to use Are you sure that hasn't inspired?
08I know. It probably has, but I'm going to force them to. Because they've got a huge pool down there, right? Yeah. A huge pool. Dimly lit. All of the practitioners are top tier. It's just fabulous. Like, it's one of the best places. And all the celebs stay there. All the celebs stay there. But apart from La Conda and, like, I guess Frenchette is kind of, like, borderline. There's Odeon. And Odeon, of course. Okay, well, there's a lot. But those are, like, the only samples. What about the Lower East Side? What's the vibe on that? That's my original neighborhood. It's so grimy and dirty. in the best way i know and it's filled with like college kids but and that's it yeah that's kind of that's kind of the vibe of it um but there's really great restaurants although so the neighborhoods change so much i also i haven't been living in the city full-time for six years so that's also you know really uh colored my view of everything but um some of my friends own forget me not and Kiki is that's also like on the border of Chinatown so those were always like my favorite spots and I before dime square was dime square like yeah that was always where I hung out Kiki's is great right yeah so good okay yeah I went to casino last week oh I'm big fan of casino Charlie XR was there yeah yeah which voice of them in there yeah yeah swan room love love nine orchard yeah one of the best cocktail yes love nine orchard in swan room the cocktails are so high caliber yeah it's sensing a theme of what i like to do yeah but seriously the swan room is like i feel like corner bar never took off the way that it really should have but i loved it i know i think the food's really nice yeah sometimes when i want like just a quiet chill lunch i go there love that yeah i love it and the difference between the upper east side and the upper west side there's more happening in the upper east yeah there's more shopping i guess yeah i guess it's more i don't really go to the upper west side i don't really go except like to go to lincoln center like that's it's pretty residential right i go to get my yeah it's just yeah it's residential and that's about it yeah all the big doctors i know right that's a far way to travel from tribeca yeah there must be some people travel for needles um tell me about beauty treatments you've talked about spa things that you love chrissy what who do you go to in the city who do you rate for whatever whether it's nails hair massage a lot um i love facials from sophie pavitt i also really like spencer's spa i got a facial there a few months ago and i thought it was really nice the space is so beautiful it's like very instagram friendly but it it really is chic and great treatments um massage i mean shibui spa at greenwich hotel that's a lot yeah the other one great thing about new york is that you can go into any random massage place and it will be unreal yeah or like nail like even for now i'm picky about like because i like my nails done manicure but but like most nail places in new york are great and you can go in and if you're like because everybody's so tired everyone's like can you just do a 10 minute massage and it's like the best massage like which i really really appreciate that there's yeah you can do any and it's like fabulous okay yeah um i've got to ask you both about dating in both cities because because again deep breaths um what are the differences do you i mean do you date when you go to london i do i date more in london than i do here i'm always so inspired you you date a lot over there it's like inspired me yeah um i don't so even when i lived in new york city, I always found myself involved with European or like non-American men.
43Like I could count the amount of American men I've dated on my one hand. I just think the level of emotional intelligence for Europeans, like the bar is just a bit higher for Europeans. Um, and so, yeah, I'm like the last time I went on a date with someone in New York, it's been over a year. Okay. Truly. Interesting. but when I'm in London yeah it just feels easier I don't know easier to meet people I feel like people are more genuine there's less like I'm dating 10 people at the same time yeah yeah the feedback I hear from single friends out here is that it's it's really easy to date but it's not very easy to get past just the dating stage when people I would agree with that yeah I think people date in New York like it's a hobby like it would be going to the gym or something yeah people talk about it so like oh yeah and then I went on a date whatever and they won't even say oh who's the person whatever and right look in part that's due to online dating and it's it happens everywhere but I think because again of just New York being New York it's on speed here and it's just people date they go two dates a night sometimes because you can just squeeze it in you can meet someone on Hinge you know at lunch on you know D.I.M.
58and just be like oh do you want to go to Jack's on Bond at five I've got a dinner at seven and so it's just like a lot more there's a lot more quantity of dates but again to your point it's not really that the quality. Got it got it yeah hey so not in London for you. But I also think that like every sorry that everyone thinks that the dating where they live is terrible and I think there's something about being in a different dating pool like you just have a different mindset it's a fresh dating pool for you compared to like the place that you live in you know you're gonna like come across like some guy that your friend went on a date with you know a month ago yeah it just keeps it fresh yeah yeah you should date in London no I did last time when I was there I had a great time I had a little fling and it kind of kept going for a while so I love dating in other cities I just Chrissy's point I always feel like my best self I feel low pressure it's just like I don't know it's kind of fun love that okay let's talk about fashion shopping here where do you go where what who are the i mean you're talking before what did you say it was cool good goes danielle guzio guzio yeah sorry what what are the brands that you have here that haven't quite made it to london yet i mean i love guzio she is a new york girl and her store in soho talk about a line around the block her success is astronomical and she deserves every second of it because she just gets like what cute girls want to wear um i love with jean i don't know if it's you have it in the uk yeah a little bit yeah i love it it's just so easy it's so cute it's again it's kind of just what we want to wear right now um i do a lot of real real shopping i'm an avid real real shop i really admire people who shop on there all the time because i get immediately overwhelmed by how much stuff i think like 80 of my closet is real real yeah i mean set kick we love it can you take us through like what is your strategy for shopping on there like do you go in for something specific or you're like scrolling new arrivals I go on the real real more than I go on Instagram I have so many saved searches I have very specific right granular searches that I'm always going and then I like to go into the store too because they have stuff there's one on Worcester Street that's amazing they're always aligned but when you do get in there if you go on a weekday it's fabulous and it's like you found you can find amazing I get so much jewelry from there I buy shoes which really horrified my followers that I buy all my shoes secondhand but I just I bought shoes I bought shoes there yeah I buy like because it's especially for shoes like the rogue and the flip-flop like I'm not I'm just not gonna pay full price and you can always get them on the real real like barely touch so I just I don't know I shop a lot of real real if you know I love that yeah I just I see people find so many incredible especially like old runway pieces and I'm always like oh my god I can't believe you found that on the real real but I just yeah I can sometimes go in when I'm looking for something very specific like there's a pair of like white leather trousers that Ferragamo showed for like fall 2024 I think and so like I have a search set for that and sometimes I'll just go on being like I wonder if there's a pair of the on there yet and you know I don't see them and then I'm like okay yeah you know we do what we don't have in the UK is that like curator shopping experience for pre-loved items so you know we've got like well you can use like bestia yeah online what's the other one um there's like sign of the times there's vintage vintage yeah yeah that's more c2c sorry it's like yeah yeah i love sign of the times sign of the times is amazing and pandora i can't i don't know i mean i see we're not talking about jewelry pandora no no no no no yeah it's called pandora's dress agency i sometimes gatekeep it but it's really really shit i know i know i know um it's chelsea anna vitiello introduced me to it and i've gotten some really incredible pieces from there i bought like a chanel fall 1992 runway quilted like hits at the thigh coat and and it was expensive but i still think it was actually like a really reasonable price that's the thing is i I think the prices there are really reasonable.
06Girl, winter is so last season. And now spring's got you looking at pictures of tank tops with hungry eyes. Your algorithm is feeding you cutoffs. You're thirsty for the sun on your shoulders. That perfect hang on the patio sundress. Those sandals you can wear all day and all night. And you've had enough of shopping from your couch. Done hoping it looks anything like the picture when you tear open that envelope? It's time for a little in-person spring treat. it's time for a trip to ross work your magic yeah because i do find in the real real sometimes i'm like well this is more expensive than retail so you love to heart it and let it sit in your favorites for a while and then they're they're like email you like by the way this is 20 % up now yeah okay fine okay so being able to go into the store also in like a very mainstream shopping area right like the location of the store here and even the one uptown you're you can kind of shop pre-loved in and amongst shopping oh the designers the other exactly same with what goes around as well right and that's quite we definitely don't have that yeah yeah that's true where else where the low east side i feel like there's a shopping there's great vintage stuff um desert vintage really great curation it's really expensive though i i love shopping vintage i don't love doing it in new york city because i think the prices are really inflated um i used to go to like hester street fair i don't know if that if it even exists anymore but i used to get like some really cute vintage stuff there but you have to hit the street fairs um even the brooklyn is it the brooklyn flea market or the one that happens in greenpoint park i once got a brand new with tags dior suit i know i was with a guy that i was dating at the time and he convinced me to buy it because i was like on my little you know i was like on my little like editor's salary and i like this is like kind of a lot of money for me but actually it was maybe like 300 bucks it was actually such a great price and i just yeah i just had like the pants tailored it has a peplum jacket i've worn it a bunch it's fucking beautiful yeah well done well done him i know and we talked a lot about manhattan but what about the rest new york is not just i know the rest is very true can i tell you apart from i mean this is really embarrassing but apart from dumbo and dumbo house I've never been into Brooklyn.
23Oh, you're missing out. We're missing, yeah. Where should we be going? That's actually where all the amazing restaurants are. This is very true. There's some really, really great restaurants in Brooklyn. Bernie's is like my favorite restaurant, probably in all of New York. It's like the food is absolutely incredible. And the martini will bring you to tears. The wedge salad will bring you to tears. Like it is, it's absolutely fabulous. Can we just talk about martinis as a quick sidebar? No, no, I don't. Three, well, I love martinis. And in London, I can have like three. Why are they the size of a fist in New York?
58Everything's bigger in America. Everything's bigger in America. No, it's a goblet. Like, they're all huge. Like, I had three really, I should have learned my lesson on night one, but I had three really rough nights in a row, or rough days, I should say, having had like two to three martinis in a row. I think I drank half a bottle of gin three nights in a row. Yeah, they're really strong and big too. Wow. I'm a whiskey girl. Whiskey? Whiskey? I don't know. I just have one whiskey and I'm good for the night. That's so cool. Yeah, so chic. I'm like 45 martinis later. Martinis are also chic. I know.
27They're the chic is. Yeah, you can only get, you've got to go slow. Yeah, that's not bad. Yeah. Sorry, where else in Brooklyn? I'm blanking out. Sorry, I'm getting vinegar at the house. Oh, yeah, that's really good. Oh, Romans? Romans is so good. It's probably the... I got it in Brooklyn. It's pizza. It's no reservations. And I went there for my birthday a couple years ago. when I saw Beyonce and she's also always there. And I was like, it was a really good omen for my ears. So, and the pizza is absolutely. It's like BYOB. It's such a good vibe. Like it's absolutely a must. It's so good. Okay.
04Love that. Yeah. Really good. I also love Evelina. That's like down the road from romance, that whole little strip. There's a lot of good stuff. And Fort green has the best restaurants. Yeah. And there's fun going out there too. Yeah. For sure. If you're, if you have like downtown fatigue of seeing, the same people which you totally do when you go out a lot there's some really good dancing and like fun bars over there as well so yep and the raves that's where all the rapes are okay noted i'm re-watching girls but and like when yeah they go to i know you've just read lena dunn's book as well which i have too and or listen to it and they go to these like this big brooklyn rave i don't remember this is yeah and i'm like that's that's a time that was a time that was a period of my life yeah yeah a long time ago um you mentioned pizza what's the best slice in the city controversial very controversial i like joe's pizza yes me too i also like scars i like scars i like someone in solo on canal oh lucia lucia i just went there yesterday i just got a slice there right on my path home from everywhere i walk so i get like an afternoon snack there a lot i think it's very solid yeah I think it's really good um I'm waiting for someone to say Prince Street so I think it's the best I do think it's the best I just I haven't been there in a really long time so I can't like vouch for whether it's still good yeah but oh my god it used to be yeah it's pretty good um I want to know about like the girlies here like who are apart from you guys obviously like who who are the kind of the the tastemakers in New York right now like the people who are kind of setting the agenda who you look to and are like wow, there's such kind of New York girls.
48I follow a lot of girls who are like not influencers, but they are, you know, chefs and like downtown girls that are just like have like I follow them on my Finsta because I don't want to be weird, but they are the cool girls where they have like 8000 followers. They are like doing something niche. They like live downtown and they are wearing the coolest outfits. And those are really the girls that inspire me personally. yeah also i always love an lsd if marcia is like queen is like queen of new york she's literally the queen yeah everything i guess there's like the two very different identities right there's like the kind of cool younger downtown and then right they're like insanely polished lsd types that's the two identities she just has such a strong sense of self and that comes across in moda that comes across in what she wears that comes across and she just hasn't wavered because of trends or anything she's just and i think that's what makes her so iconic and so new york so true i want to ask you both about hustle culture because obviously you know something that we kind of hear across the pond a lot is that like however relentless the grind and like however relentless it is in london it's like a whole other version of that here like how what's your experience of that and like the working light out here i have found that to be true i think that it is relentless here.
07I think the pressure to feel like you're working all the time is so strong. And you just, even the performance of working so hard and you almost have to say, I'm so busy right now. I'm so busy as a, you know, some sort of a, just what you want to signal, um, that you have going on. People do not value relaxation in New York. They, they're you, you, it is almost impossible to relax here. That's why people leave so much. You know, people say, oh, you have to leave the city even for a day or, you know, go do something out, just get out of the city. It's just like impossible to relax here. It's just you walk out and you see, for me, though, I think the root cause is like inspiring in some ways because you see all these people.
54No one lives in New York passively. No one is like, oh, I guess I'll just live in New York. Everybody who lives here has a dream as corny as that sounds and has something that they're working to become or to create. And that energy is very palpable for me. When I walk outside my door immediately, I'm thinking, Oh, all these people have a dream and they're working so hard and I have to work so hard, but how it manifests can be destructive at times. You just feel so tired. You never want to miss anything. And you think, Oh, well, if I just forced myself to go to this one party, there could be that person that I meet and they can help me get this thing that I want.
28Right. So yeah. Or that you meet the love of your life and you just go out. Yeah. I think like if you're trying to build something, build a career, like there is no better place to be than here because everyone I think is so in it to win it and it pushes you to also want to do well and you just, but after a while it's like that's part of the reason why I love now being in London because I'm like I'm past that point of my career where I want to be on the grind 24 7 I'm like I did that I worked my ass off for over a decade and now I just like I don't want to work that hard like straight up I don't want to work that hard like and I still work hard but luckily it's for myself and I get to reap all the benefits of it so you know I reap whatever I'm willing to put in but sometimes I'm just like yeah I don't want to bust my ass yeah I think the other thing that I remember hearing a podcast with I think it was the Monzo founder or like whatever somebody finance product and he was talking about how you know in London he was like I've got this idea and I want to do this thing and everyone was like it's a very kind of tall poppy syndrome attitude there where it's like don't do that it's not going to work for this reason like we've got this kind of inherent pessimism whereas I'm here and everyone's like who can I introduce you to like how can I help love this idea and like is there maybe a more inherently optimistic attitude to ambition in the city i i think you know i think that's just a cultural thing though it's just american and americans in general is right this is the american dreams the american dream if you work hard you can do it which obviously the american dream doesn't really exist anymore unfortunately but i just it's it's a cultural thing it's a can do oh yeah like i'll invest i'll right no go for it go for it It's just, that's just not the British way.
18No, it's so not. So not. Pretty sad. Chrissy, I want to ask about escaping New York. Yeah. We were just talking about how you, how one gets a bit of sanity. And I mean, that's what you've done. You're just outside the city. Yeah. Tell me about the balance and like what that brings you. So I grew up in Westchester County about an hour outside the city. And, you know, it's the proper suburbs. It feels like we're in the woods. We're surrounded by trees. I got the white picket fence and everything. and yeah it's really lovely to be there and to be able to hop on a train in an hour I'm in the city and I can be amongst the hustle and bustle but when I've had a busy day in the city like I've had today I'm like I can't wait to get on my train and just like chill out till I get home and know that like I'm gonna have a peaceful weekend in the suburbs any recommendations if people are headed that way oh Bedford Post in 100 that's where I have my 40th birthday dinner Martha Stewart goes there I yeah it's it's the place to go also the inn at Pound Ridge which is a Jean George okay yeah we have really great restaurants I've been upstate before not to but yeah you've probably been like Hudson yeah yeah which is further up yeah but the food scene is amazing like genuinely so good yep um you mentioned Martha Stewart yeah and I feel like celebrity names have come up a bit yeah I mean she's the one I know there's something much more sort of celebrity focus about this city like in the last week i've seen ben i saw ben still shooting a film yesterday yeah i saw mark they're just walking down the street everywhere they're everywhere yeah i know aside from your beyonce moment what's your best new york celebrity encounter years ago i ran into gerard butler outside of ken mayer rest in peace wow that was a real moment in time this is like 2012 2013 like this is a long time ago um and i was with a friend and yeah we we were just like chatting with him on the street cool yeah that's yeah he's a goodie i feel like anytime you see sjp in the wild i know i mean i will never stop thinking that's cool i was just raised on sexist city it's my favorite show i'll never stop watching it and she's just ultimate new york cool girl and every time you see her just walking around looking cool and like so i've never seen her radar she's like so cool about About three years ago, I was by myself and I was just, I was walking from Soho through to like meatpacking and I turned onto a street and they were filming the scene from And Just Like That where she's got the wedding dress on.
46And I literally turned onto the street and she was just there with a feather on her head. And I was like, so good. So good. I love it. I feel like I also always see Chris Brock, like always walking around Soho, always with like his headphones on. He doesn't want anyone to bother him. I love that. Yeah. If you hang around for long enough, like you'll see them. You'll see them. They're out. Yeah. I want to know the advice that you both give to people about New York. I mean, your life is advice to people. What are you, when people are talking about, you know, I see so often you do your weekly Q &As and people are always asking you about like moving to a new city or like making friends or like starting again.
24What's your advice for that specifically in New York? I would say give it time. I think, you know, with any city, I think you need a full year and it to feel settled and it's okay if you, feel really, really untethered before that, because it's, it can take a really long time to find your groove. New York, I would say, just be kind to yourself because it can be an incredibly harsh place. I lived here in my twenties when I was not doing this job. I felt super lost. I felt super constantly rejected, trying to find jobs, doing odd jobs, this and that. And it's, it can be a really challenging place to live if you don't feel like you have purpose or you don't know who you are yet so I would say just give yourself grace and allow the city to shape you in the good ways and and just shield yourself from the harshness any advice for if you are if you're here and you're going to or even if you're anywhere to be honest but like you know if you're going through that patch in time where you're like okay why is nothing happening from where do I go you know what's what do you what do you do to do you move forward you know I have a great friend and mentor and she says you just got to keep rowing the boat and it's such a simple mantra but I always think about that and you just sometimes you have to be like this is not my season this kind of sucks like I can't get a job or whatever you know and you just kind of have to keep rowing the boat and and not and not allow the that to permeate you and and to affect your self-confidence because it can and to your the best of your ability you should not let it great advice because the advice for new new yorkers I just feel like there's a reason why the saying like if you can make it here you can make it anywhere it's so true because this is one of the toughest places to be just in terms of like as we said like everyone's on their grind everyone wants to be like rich and successful and this and that and so they're you know it's highly competitive especially if you want to work in like a cool creative job um but it's so in spot it's such an inspiring place to just be and know that like okay my point of being here is to go after my dreams and so you just have to like commit to working really hard and knowing that also there's so much value in just being like out and about and talking to people you never know who you are going to cross or like me I remember when I I think had just graduated from college I was in the city one day and Giovanna Bataglia passed me on the street and I literally like ran after her and I was like oh my god I'm such a huge fan of your work like I really want to work in fashion and she gave me her card I emailed her she never responded but still it was like just having yeah I know it was like just having that interaction though like meant so much to me because she was so lovely to me yeah on the street I saw her at New York when I landed in here I'm gonna wrap it up with my New York moment story my favorite New York moment story when I first moved to New York and I had no idea what I was doing I saw Andy Cohen walking with his dog in the West Village and I am like the biggest Andy Cohen Bravo head ever and I dm'd him and this was 10 years ago and I was like I'm the biggest fan I think you're the Shakespeare of our time can I come to watch what happens live and he was like yeah email like whatever any I ended up going like took pictures oh my god that's so cute cut to now my radio show is on his channel right like I've been on watch what happens live so it's like New York has a crazy way of you don't know what it means.
45Like just it's I think you said it so well, just keep showing up, keep putting yourself out there because you never know how it's going to come back around. And the city does have some good magic like that. Of course. Yeah. And even the start of my career, like I had interned at Harper's Bazaar when I was in college and I graduated the year of like the financial crisis and everything was a mess. And one night I was out with my friends and I saw an editor that I had interned for. And again, like I went up to him and I was like, Joe, I still don't have a job. And he was like, okay, email me and like, let's talk.
17And a couple of months later, he hired me. Lovely. Yeah. Which you polite in the UK as well. Yeah. I'm like, you have to like, yeah, like I even now, like I only hire people to work for me who cold email me because I don't want to have to post like I'm looking for this and I really love people who take initiative and I'm just like I'm just gonna reach out to her literally the girl that I hired um last year to be my creative producer one day I was like I really need to hire someone like I'm tired of working by myself I just searched my email resume she had emailed me like a year prior and I just reached out to her and I was like hey are you still like interested in let's talk yeah that's a really good approach I really really respect people who just cold email yeah yeah I love that so cool okay some great advice let's wrap it up but I want to know from both of you what um what you've got going on tell us plug yourselves we're like in the thick of May it's mental health awareness month so I'm working on some events my newsletters I do four typically I only do two newsletters a month.
