0:27Charlotte Collins:girl winter is so last season and now spring's got you looking at pictures of tank tops with hungry eyes your algorithm is feeding you cut-offs you're thirsty for the sun on your shoulders that perfect hang on the patio sundress those sandals you can wear all day and all night and you've had enough of shopping from your couch done hoping it looks anything like the picture when you tear open that envelope it's time for a little in-person spring treat it's time for a trip to Ross. Work your magic. On today's podcast, Hodge and I are joined by beauty editor extraordinaire Sarah Jossel. We're of course tapping her for all of her best beauty advice.

1:05Charlotte Collins:She has a new book out and it's filled with everything you would want to know about beauty, fragrance, hair, tweakments, tan. It's all in there and she gives us the lowdown. It did take five years to write so I feel I may as well go all out at this stage. We are also sharing the books we're reading and the life advice that we've taken to heart. Don't get too comfortable. As in like, you know, you really can. You just think this is it for life. Yeah. And you don't know. Plus, I have a TV series, which is new to us and really worth a watch. It's kind of like a feminine in between us. Okay. Love that.

1:37Charlotte Collins:But there's nothing feminine about it. It's pretty, they're a bit grotty, these girls. And we solve your dilemmas. So it's a good one. Make sure you stick around.

1:55Charlotte Collins:welcome to the show acts podcast with me charlotte collins this week i'm joined by hodge and we've got a very special guest i've got a full roster here columnist beauty director broadcaster author sarah jossel the author bit's exciting author that's new thank you for having me i'm so excited to be here thanks for being here fresh off a very very whirlwind book tour i don't think i've ever seen a bigger press tour yeah for a book ever i think press tour makes it sound really big well but no i'm actually having a great time it did take five years to write so i feel i may as well go all out at this stage if you're gonna do something do it properly that's my theory and people keep saying aren't you tired and i just think i'm not gonna you know when you then think i'm gonna quieten down a bit it's embarrassing and then i read a quote being like it's not cool to be cool like actually like just own it and go big so hard and i've worked so hard I've only got like 10 more parties to go to what's the premise hang on I'd love the book chat it's coming can we stick to protocol thank you if you're not subscribing already then please do subscribe to our podcast and we always start with what we're wearing I should know that what are you wearing today my shoes are 10th floor I've got a pair in white as well and they're just so comfortable and they've got a padded sole.

3:21So they're really comfy. Leather shorts from Other Stories and a shirt from H &M Studio earrings. Sorry. Love. I thought you were saying sorry. Sorry. Sorry for what? I'm going to get kicked off with this broadcast really quickly. Come on, try to keep up. Okay, sorry, sorry. Right. You guys will make this look very relaxed. I feel like I've got to be relaxed when I do this. Okay. This jacket is a brand called Eitha. E-I-T-H-E-R which I'd never heard of but love the shoulder pads feel like I feel quite done even though it's early in the morning it's called the peplum situation as well love the peplum situation trousers are Zara God I'm really that's Tony Bianco Tony Bianco I said Antonio Bianco close enough I love a shoe which shows a lot of foot it's a very sexy shoe but it's not a massive heel so I feel like it's great day night I've actually lived in these in my press tour

4:14Charlotte Collins:on the big old press tour they're standing you in good stead what about you thank you so much I am wearing this jacket is a brand called Rua who you're going to see so much of in our New York coverage because we spent a lot of time with them can I tell you it's wool which is kind of mind blowing it looks like scoobery such a good colour and I'm back in boots I mean these are my Kate boots why? it's May I know it's not that warm no I think that's dramatic it's quite warm outside do you think do you think I've been a bit well yesterday was very cold also my quick compliment to you is do you know what i think you do so well is jacket indoor jackets like i turn up and feel i need to take something like that off because i get hot but if you've got a top on a vest top but you're not taking that off that's your look no also you should see the fake time but the fake time going on under here is yeah a journey i feel we now need a pop-up we'll put the feet that's why she's got a boot on yes no one needs to see these 25 degrees that's why she's blaming the not the spray tan just to be clear i had a spray tan in new york last week which was so dark which was like my dream color but she took the brief a bit literally and and has i've been like cooked in this like i don't know how i don't know how much longer i can wait until it's scrubbing off like it's not coming off yet no no that's a three-day job it is right it's a process well there's a brand called rose and caramel here we go and it's pretty much the only brand that i think does what it says i've heard this yeah they come up with me on tiktok shop all the time so random Yes, but people do really rave about yes, so my spray tanner.

5:43Yeah, sounds very a this my spray But James Harkner love of my life He said rose and caramel, okay, I need to try it. Let's try it cuz I've also got the problem but mine actually made me feel far better yeah

6:03Charlotte Collins:let's talk about things we're loving what are you loving right now I've got two things my first thing is I'm on a strength fitness journey I'm on a 10 week now it's eight weeks but when I started it it was 10 weeks until I'm in Ibiza and so I go to the I go to a summer called Born Fitness and And I was complaining to the guy and he said, right, let's, I'm not going to be able to make miracles happen. He's like, well, we can try. We can make a difference. So I'm doing two PT classes and then two sort of sweat classes, which is sort of cardio, which is fine. But the big thing is that I need to eat 75 grams of protein a day.

6:44So 25 grams of protein with each meal.

6:46Charlotte Collins:And that is so hard. Did we establish how much that actually is? Like, is that a chicken breast or is it like four chicken breasts? Yeah, so an egg is seven grams. One egg. So you'd need like five eggs for a lot. You need to have eggs and cottage cheese. Yeah. That basically needs to be your breakfast. And protein powder in a smoothie. Do you have a good protein powder? Well, I use the Welco one. Okay, fine. I'm so bad with all of that. It's good flavour. Yeah. Anna Bromelow, her breakfast is almond milk, the chocolate protein powder scoop from Welco, peanut butter. It's not so heavy in the morning to have all of that.

7:19but if you have that that sort of it tastes like a milk like a chocolate and also no one experimented in Anna Bromelow so I'll have what she's

7:27Charlotte Collins:I'm like what are you doing babe so yeah so anyway watch your space okay we're in Ibiza the same weekend yeah I know and I am not on the same protein wait what weekend is it the first one of July oh my god I was going to say first week of June and that's my 40th birthday in my basket and you would all come to my 40th birthday that would have been fun but no month later oh my god you're really in your prime I know you are you're hitting 40 strong yeah It's quite big. I think I might just arrive and just collapse. But no, all my friends, family, we're all going. Oh, I love that. Fun. No kids allowed.

7:57No kids. Have you got outfits? No. As soon as this is done, I'm moving on to outfits. So can Shear Lux do something on beachwear? We absolutely do. I mean, I'm sure you do a load anyways. We'll do our outfits. Send me some links. We'll do a whole podcast. Yeah, we'll do a whole podcast. Thank you so much. What are we wearing? And I'll be there. We've got that. Have you heard of the brand, though? Same. S-A-M-E. Yeah, so good. okay so my friend James sent me all these links he's coming so he lives in New York sent me all these links the most incredible sarongs most stunning swimming costumes you'll love it I might just order a load of that brand it's Australian it's called Same Los Angeles so I'm gonna go with not

8:31Charlotte Collins:I'm gonna say I don't know how to be like it's actually not I might be American wait I also still have all of your sarongs I need to give them back to you before that holiday I need them before that holiday but not before sadly can I have them back we can do it yeah we'll just do a little I'm stressed for you that first the beginning of June is in like two weeks no no I'm more stressed than you trust me yeah are you doing like a party is there like one big moment that you need a good outfit for well one night party which is going to party which is going to be the welcome dinner and then a really stunning lunch in Formantera oh what a better yes oh my god it's the best exactly so there's 30 of us so fun and I'm really upset actually because to get a table there they make you work really hard so I tried like eight different versions to email then I was like author and they were like we don't care i tried everything i tried every email address and then my brother who lives in las vegas and knows all the people in like dj's like one person email they were like but no can you hook me up i have tried everything i've basically offered one of my kids we're going with three other couples and i love them all dearly but there's no doers in the group that's tough and now yes we need that one now suddenly me and one of the other girls are like the doers and we're like shit i don't know why this always falls on you because you have a really busy job like hodges always seems to be the doer of whichever friendship group you're with and you have three children and a very and a job i know no offense to your other friends but i don't know so i can say it but that's a lot about you what your natural instinct well i think they just think i know best yes that's also i do think with our jobs everybody assumes this is true we know and to be fair I don't really want to go anywhere that anyone else has ever booked no I don't quite like full creative control I'm funny that isn't it I know sorry the point of the protein chat was so about Emily English has got a new book out so she's a nutritionist and author like you honey and she's just got she's written her new book it's called So Good Express and why I love it is because everything is delicious but also she puts how much protein is at the top of each recipe.

10:39That's so helpful. Yeah, so she's got, it's like tuna poke balls and it's so easy. There's a prawn quesadilla and I couldn't recommend it more. It's so good. Everything she, it's just yummy. Focus Features and Blumhouse present Obsession.

10:57Charlotte Collins:When I have a crush on a guy, no one knows. Be careful. I wish Nikki loved me more than anyone in the entire world. Who you wish for. Obsession is 96 % fresh on Rotten Tomatoes. I love you so, so, so, so much. It's blood-soaked nightmare fuel. What kind of sponge you put on her? You have been warned. Obsession, rated R, under 17 on a minute without parent. Only in theaters May 15th, with special engagements in Dolby. What they did to your family, you're lucky to make it out alive. Streaming on Peacock. These men are going to come after me. Taking them out is my only chance. Put a bullet in her head.

11:37From the co-creator of Ozark. Looks like a family was running drugs. Execution style killing is rare for the keys. And it leads on who they might have been running for. The cartel killed my family. I'm going to kill them. All of them. M.I.A. Streaming now. Only on Peacock.

11:54Charlotte Collins:You only cook her recipes at home. It's like midweek suppers. I need to get on it. She is the best. Like I don't know how she makes everything so healthy but so tasty. And the kids love it as well. Also I love the whole what she does with the protein if that's what she does because so many cookbooks are too artsy. Like I don't know how to cook, help me out. Like I don't need all the like jazz. The prawn quesadillas are like 45 grams of protein. And also the opposite as well. Like Ben messaged me last night before and he was like, okay, well I'm going to make salmon, sweet potato and cottage cheese.

12:28Charlotte Collins:I'm like, that is not a dinner. That is a series of ingredients and that to me like getting your proteins in like i mean come on like i don't want to eat that for supper i'm not a bodybuilder like that's not good so i feel like getting your proteins in can some plans look a bit like that it's a bit like yes yeah you know ingredients completely i like that she packages it all up yeah in a good way what was the best thing you had the prawn yeah it's so good everything's lush and she has loads of pasta and i love pasta i'd highly recommend and my other thing is a book that i'm reading it's a memoir by a lady called belle burden Her grandmother was Babe Bailey, who was one of Truman Capote's swans.

13:05And her father was related to the Vanderbilt. So they're very prominent in New York family. She's just been married to this guy called James for 20 years. They've had a lovely time. And suddenly in lockdown, he just leaves her out of the blue, like completely out of the blue. And it's a very honest reflection of that. I know about this. But it's so, she leaves nothing off the table. It's so intriguing. And the way she, considering she did sort of major in English years ago. So she's obviously like good at writing. And then somebody told her in a writing class that she couldn't write. And she never picked up the pen again.

13:42And so this, she sort of got the guts to do it. And it's her journey of her realisation that she's just been sort of so passive in that 20 year marriage. And then suddenly he like plays hardball with her. he like hadn't he still had a pre the prenup which they promised he would extinguish after five years of marriage and he ended up not doing that you go on this journey with her when she just becomes this like better person it's really and it's just so scary that you don't know the person you're lying next to it's what it's one of those books that everyone's been talking about i was gonna say i think so many people have found it helpful and so relatable which is quite sad it's It's really empowering.

14:24I'm like at 90 % on my Kindle and I'm like, God, I'm so thrilled for you that you've come out of the other end.

14:29Charlotte Collins:Does it make you feel differently about your own marriage? Like about the way we as women should be in a marriage? Completely. It makes me feel like, you know, I sort of like, I do let James just get on with shit, which I shouldn't. Do you mean like the financial side? Because I'm like, oh, you do it. I'm doing all the other stuff. I'm not doing all the other stuff, but I'm doing the other stuff. And it does make you think, Christ, He could have another family. Yeah. And I wouldn't know. So when I interviewed, do you know, Paulina Poroskova? She was the face of, she is the face of Estee Lauder.

15:00And we did this incredible panel all about aging. And she, I said to her, if you could give everyone here, it was like 200 people there, one piece of advice, what would it be? And everyone thought she was going to, you know, say something very beauty. And she just said, no, you'll understand your finances. That's it. Like that is the biggest mistake we make is traditionally leaving it to the man. it's the biggest mistake and it ruined her life and she's only just coming back from it and I feel like that was the moment I just thought it's so true so true do you know who Debbie Wasco is of course so Debbie Wasco

15:31Charlotte Collins:who's an unbelievably successful business woman she talks about having a fuck you fund that's what she calls it so like having your own pot so that basically if you ever needed to be like fuck you I'm out of here you've actually got which is obviously different to being literate financially literate within your relationship but also having your own money so that if shit hits the fan you've got your own I know my best friend Charlotte who works at JP Morgan and looks exactly like you we always talk about it and she's called Charlotte I've always said to her I cannot tell you how well a book would do which is don't call it finance for dummies but literally just break it down because you get to it and the ices and the jices when you're kids and the jices and the pensions and you just sort of let someone else run it all and we don't yeah I know but what's fascinating about Belle is it's the year she turns 50 who's this sorry when he leaves her it's the year she turns 50 and it's sort of she says you know amongst my female friends that's the pattern you sort of that like these men are done with you and they you're not reflective of who they want to be you're not this shiny you know they want someone who's going to sort of look good in their arm can i bring in that one of the things i'm loving right now because it's really relevant to this conversation which is the book called yesteryear which is by caro claire burke again a book that a lot of people are talking about which is um fiction it is set from the perspective of a trad wife influencer so very much of the sort of Nara Smith ballerina farm ilk and she wakes up one day and finds that she's kind of in her life except it's not really her life she's actually woken up in yesteryear like in the prairie like she's woken up in the 1800s and she's got her family around her and suddenly she doesn't have all of the mod cons that have facilitated this very like simple life so she knows she actually loves her washing machine or whatever that's really kind of doing a disservice but she's suddenly woken up and becoming more aware of the fact that the very traditional gender roles that she has been sort of you know championing actually kind of what that means for women and what what the reality of that looks like when you go back to a time period where those are real and where they can be enforced and there's this paragraph she kind of flits between uh modern day and this terrible thing that's happened to her but also um kind of how she got there how she got into her influencer world with her husband and she talks about her time at university and she's kind of comparing herself she's obviously super religious and comparing herself to these other girls who are secular and kind of partying and you know living a very different life to her and she there's this one paragraph where she talks about what this girl's what her roommate's life is going to look like and it's such a like oh for modern women it's so judgy but it's so it's so scarily accurate it's like she's got it because she gets a grad scheme at mckinsey in this and she's she's looking at this girl and she's like you know she's going to go on to have this grad scheme and she's going to be earning whatever her 250k and she's going to be working 100 hours a week and then she throughout her 20s she's going to be telling herself that you know she's that she's really happy and she's got everything she's wanted and then she's going to meet a guy and she will eventually kind of decide to have children in her mid-30s and but then she's going to be told she's a geriatric mother so she's going to have to be having IVF and then the husband's going to be you know subconsciously looking at women in their 20s and realizing that they're more fertile oh my god and it goes on and and I was like, oh my God, stop, stop.

18:36It's true. It is true.

18:38Charlotte Collins:Yes, and it was talking, and that thing about, that bit really scared me, the idea that men subconsciously, I don't know if there's any scientific truth to this, but men subconsciously look at women in their early 20s and they are more like child rearing appropriate than us old hags in our 30s. No, I think that is, there's no scientific, I think that's a fact. Almost close to a fact. That's why marry the good guy. Yeah. Like marry your best friend. but the guy it's that whole thing you know I always think when my friends are like there's no spark and I was like a spark can grow it doesn't have to be on the first day where it's like kindness 100 % so much more important kindness anyway it's all a bit it's all a bit confronting you just don't really want to think about life in such realistic terms but it's similar to strangers as well yeah and I think it's a lesson to us all just you know protect yourself yeah and invest and have the conversation and also don't get I always say don't get too comfortable.

19:33As in like, you know, you really can. Where you just, you just think this is it for life. Yeah. And you don't know. Like we're all humans. We all have instincts. Like always remember.

19:43Charlotte Collins:It's true. I always like, I've been with my husband a really long time, but we might not be together in 10 years. Yeah. I hope we are, but we might not because people are going to break him out. I want to say this to him. I love him and he loves me, but I don't know. We might not, but by the time we're 45. Yeah. You just don't know. You just don't know. I think you've just got to, yeah you just got to hope that you go you go on the journey at the same time together yeah and still sort of go on date night invest in each other but you're right you don't know if it's forever so you've got to just make sure that you're looked after and you're independent that's why I always you know I've always loved working even though I don't know where my money's going that's kind of key you need to know that part just try and try and keep that i've got a runaway phone i know where your wardrobe is i know where your money is and it's definitely on my wardrobe it's on your feet um there's that obama quote as well isn't that i can't remember which one of them says it but basically the secret to a happy marriage is it is that knowing that there will always be a time when one of you might want to get a divorce as long as that time doesn't coincide then you're fine oh i think that's really good yeah yeah also i always say make sure you're having fun like not all the time it can't be fun all the time but especially we have a three-year-old and a one-year-old so we we quite literally spend every day being like shotgun you shotgun you yeah you get the child you do this yeah and i'm like we're five we are not equipped to have kids the amount of time we're like shotgunning this house yeah um that we just think to ourselves let's just go out let's go do something like whenever you feel that's getting into that territory which is like all the time just go out yeah like go out and also i think go out with friends because sometimes I feel you see your partner shine when they're with other people because they're like making them laugh and telling the story and you're like a bit whoa I quite enjoy I think sometimes when it's just you two it's hard to sometimes you do talk about the kids a bit which is boring and you say like let's not talk about kids and then you're both like let's do 10 minutes of admin can your mother have the kids that weekend I'm like oh god you're ruining my vibe we went to see Akon and Neo with some friends on Sunday night, which was the most fun.

21:54Charlotte Collins:We just danced. Do you ever get tired? Yes, yes, I break. I do break. It was so fun, honestly. Like, to just go out and have a boogie together. It was actually really depressing because nearly everyone in the whole O2 was just standing there filming. I know. We were, like, going for it. That's why at Coldplay, it was so good when he said, you're not allowed to have your phone. I know. Just put it away. I loved it so much. Oh, my God. Time, like euphoria. Yeah. Best concert. It should be that. like as an absolute i think so anyway we're going to boy zone together in a couple of weeks speaking of fun yeah can't wait um sarah what are you loving right now you guys have really showed me up because with your highbrow your book i'm going to talk about a drink okay so lovely trini waddle um we had a book launch at her store and before we did this really gorgeous like getting ready together and she said you know what we need is a drink and she's like i'm going to make you a palagrita and i was like a who wow like a palagrita exactly and then i what do we think a palagrita is something with margarita right san pellegrino and margarita tequila paloma and a margarita love child is that quite a lot well no it was well yes i was drunk so like a best night ever like a great margarita so it was grapefruit honey and i can't get the ingredients wrong because we've got to get this right.

23:15Charlotte Collins:Is this something that Trini's made up? Oh yeah, totally made up. Okay, tequila, grapefruit, soda water or fresh grapefruit, squeeze of lemon, honey, chili flakes in your NutriBullet. Oh wow. Poured onto lots of ice with a, what's it called? Tejini. A salty rim. It was, that's going to be my drink of the summer and everywhere I go I'm going to order and they'll be like, who? What? But I am going to make it a thing. I love it. That sounds unreal. Yeah, that sounds really good. I wish I took a picture. She served them. Obviously, this is Trini in like the most amazing glass. Yeah. It was so casual.

23:50It took her like five minutes and it was just so delicious. Yeah. I love that.

23:55Charlotte Collins:Love that. I need a summer drink. Yeah, because I find Paloma quite hot. Yeah. I can only have like two. Yeah, and it gets a bit boring after like a few sips. Okay, if you need six, Pallagrito. Yeah, that's what I'm doing. Love that. Yes, there you go. Thanks, Trini. Yeah, that's one. Oh, wait. No, sorry. That's it. I can stop that. No, no, keep going, keep going. What else? What else are you loving? Tell us. So many things. Well, I was thinking, so I've moved into my house six months ago. So I've read my whole Instagram algorithm is interiors, et cetera. And one of the things I struggled with so much was art, the finishing touch.

24:28Like, you know, you can do everything. You've chosen your pain, you've chosen everything. And then the walls, it's just so hard. And I say it's a bit like wine. Like if you don't understand it and you go into a restaurant and you see this menu, it's another language. I find art a completely different language. and I know you love Art Interrupted. Yes, exactly.

24:45Charlotte Collins:Yes, who I rent from. Which I think is such a clever idea. So I basically, yes, I was like looking everywhere and then Phoebe, who works at Sunday Times Star with me, said contact the art register. So it's this woman called Lizzie Dixie and basically she is an encyclopedia. So if you have zero idea where to begin, she narrows it down. She sends you a, it's per hour and you'll say how long you want her to spend. You'll send her things you love and she will just make this small mood board for you and you can say, I love this style, this style. And then you give her her price point. And I think people are really embarrassed to say an affordable price because they think everything has to be so expensive.

25:23But like she will never ever judge in any way. And then she can find you a small thing for the kitchen. Anyways, the two pieces of art that I found is this incredible artist called Mary West. Who everyone who walks into the house is like, that is stunning. and I feel so proud that like I've got something like that. And then the other one, I know you like her because I always see on her Instagram, but so her name is Aline. Oh yeah, A-Eliad or something. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Anyways, we've got this zebra from her and it's such a talking point. Everyone walks into the bar area, which we've created. I think because we've got three-year-olds and a one-year-old, we were desperate to feel cool.

25:59So we've created a little bar area and like with little bar stores and we're like, come on, we still got this. And we've got this zebra and everyone who comes in is like, love the zebra. It's like our talking point. I love that. Anyway, so I feel like working with someone who can really help you say what you're thinking. Yeah. Because I think that's the hardest thing. Everyone just thinks I'll go to an affordable art fair and it's always just a bit.

26:20Charlotte Collins:But also it can be really expensive, the affordable art fair. Like in my experience, often things are two, five, 10 grand. Totally. Maybe you want just people to be put on your radar. If you need to fill a house with art, you don't want to spend that on one individual piece. Totally. And also they've got like a link to, you know they look sort of along the same lines yeah it's like a vibe rather than sometimes it could be quite jarring exactly yeah and you know she'll say when you go to the affordable art fair look for these artists it just it's helping you like navigate this world that feels very hard to like it's not very approachable and i think it sounds like it makes it fun because it can be so overwhelming you're like fuck where do i start um before we move on can i just give a shout out really quickly to a tv show that i've been watching so it's called such brave girls i only heard about because it was the BAFTAs, the TV BAFTA Awards this weekend.

27:08Charlotte Collins:And people were obviously doing their Vox Pops with talent. And I saw Adam Scott from Severance. Somebody said, what's your favorite British TV show? And he said, this show is Such Brave Girls. I was like, I haven't heard of that. And I back his taste. Don't know much about him, but I back what he's in. So therefore, I thought I'd give it a go. So this is a really, it's a dark comedy created by a comedian called Kat Sadler. Stars her and her real life sister, whose name is Lizzie Davidson. It is about kind of two ordinary girls and their mother and they're kind of trauma bonded. I actually wrote down a quote.

Read the full transcript

27:43Charlotte Collins:The Guardian said, it's about how traumatized women make terrible choices, which sounds really dark, but it's a really, really funny version of that. It's kind of like the royal family meets, I don't know, like a Sharon Horgan comedy. Like it's very, it's messy and it's, they've got this mother, These girls are probably supposed to be their early 20s. Their mother is so hopeless, borderline abusive in the way she speaks to them, but is desperately, her entire MO in life is to pin down this man who's got a big house just so she can kind of move into this big house. And it's genuinely really good.

28:19Charlotte Collins:It's kind of of the - Is it one season? There's two seasons. Okay. I've watched the first season. The second one has just dropped. It's on iPlayer or on Hulu. It's directed by Simon Bird from the Inbetweeners. It's kind of like a feminine Inbetweeners. Okay. love that but there's nothing feminine about it it's pretty they're a bit grotty these girls but it's um they're all incredibly kind of egotistical dealing with their own mental health problems in very different ways and it's dark good sleep is everything that's why ollie's science back support is made with a blend of melatonin and l-theanine for both kiddos and grown-ups so when your mind won't switch off you've got something that can help Erasing thoughts and restless nights won't stand a chance.

29:42Charlotte Collins:Right, let's move on to fashion finds. Do we do beauty in this segment as well? Yes. Why is it called fashion finds? Well, it can be fashion slash beauty. Okay, fashion slash. I feel like let's put some beauty in there. Let's throw it in. I feel like we've got the queens. Sarah, what are your recent finds? You said you had a lot of fashion. Well, I know. You put two to three, and I've got eight. Okay, number one, sculpted by Amy, Cream Luxe Blush. Have you tried that blush? Hodge, this is your blush. I'm looking at you now. This is your blush. Because I'm using Ilya's Soft Focus Blush. Right. Which is also stunning.

30:15But this, it's like Korean technology where you're going to just bounce it onto your cheeks, and it just brings you to life. Then I've put Skin Rocks the Strong Acid. Okay. So this is Caralhydrone's. If you have any buildup on your skin, it's dull, it's dry, it's dehydrated. What this does is you just put it on a cotton pad and you'll do it around, you know, around the nose. You can't do it in areas where you tend to just feel like it's got that textured feel. Yes. And suddenly it's like baby's bottom smooth.

30:40Charlotte Collins:I have a biologique research version of that, which I love. Exactly. So what I find with this is there isn't that like stringent smell to it. and even though it's called strong, it doesn't feel strong, but it works really, really hard. And what do you follow that with? So if I'm using in the morning, then my moisturizer and then my SPF. So that's it. Cleanse something like the strong acid, moisturizer, SPF. And in the evening, cleanse, strong acid, moisturizer. So is it okay to use an acid like that in the morning? Yeah, I mean, I wouldn't do it every day. But if you've got an event and you're going to put makeup on for a day event, you can definitely just use it to just buff away any of that texture.

31:17you know what I mean by that totally

31:19Charlotte Collins:yeah yeah that's yeah you know what I just I used it and I kept doing this and you shouldn't touch your face but it felt it felt like silk love that feeling really really amazing you know when you've used a dermaplaner oh yeah it's like that but in the skincare okay great do you guys know C. Athaly Kath Kidston I mean I know Kath Kidston okay yeah no no this will blow your mind so Kath Kidston the same lady the woman Kath Kidston so she sold Kath Kidston and she has started Sea Athelene. This is the most stunning bath and body brand. I feel every bath and body brand in the world sat up in the boardrooms and like, we're in trouble.

31:59Every single product is quite, I say life-changing, but you put the bath oil in and the scent and the texture and the whole experience just changes your bath. Wow. Then the shower gel, then the hand wash. So she has a greenhouse at home and she makes everything. She grows the plants. She's just the most talented woman you will ever meet and you'll fall in love with these products. Wow, how new? Is she like a botanist?

32:26Charlotte Collins:Like she kind of puts together her own lotions and potions. Well, she's got a whole team. But it all started from her. Yeah. So during lockdown, she was like, I'm going to be really extra. I don't do Kath Kittin anymore. I want her to retire. Retiring does not suit me. So she got this greenhouse and she started to grow plants, I'm just in love with it. Like whenever I've had like a long day or a stressful day or I'm feeling overwhelmed, I have this bath. I will get you the right bath oil. I think it's called number one. Put it in my bath and I lie there and I just think I'm fine. We never have to use bath oils.

33:00It takes a ton of ours. Well, that is, but towards the end of the time. Yeah, I do use it to take the time. Yeah, that's great. I'm quite enjoying June Bird's new body range. It smells so good. It's like a midnight feast. and this show yeah of course yeah dr alexis it's such an interesting brand because she's a consultant dermatologist so you're going to assume that it's going to be really dumb like everything's going to be but she's so cool she's so fun she's like really broken that boundary that consultant dermatologists know how to do that whole sensorial journey too because it's not just clinical you mean yes it's got like salted caramel vanilla and but like it doesn't irritate the skin obviously not like with her background sure anyways yes yeah um okay let me go quickly um and then i've got a few here for fashion i've got the same los angeles which we spoke about which is gonna be so good beachwear for ibiza the sarongs okay really sexy really sexy tibby heels love the new tibby heels they've got like they're called the urno heel they've got like the point at the front yeah i wore them and trini actually took them off my feet the other night and everywhere where I went, they just elongate the leg.

34:08They make me look taller.

34:09Charlotte Collins:It was so good. I am such a Tibby fan. Like, I feel like not enough people in the UK know about that brand. But Trini definitely likes their footwear as well because she's got their really fluffy heels, which are amazing. And what I would say is, you can walk in there. Which I feel like turning 40 is like the number one prize to wear heels that you feel great in. But you can also walk. Like, gone are the days where you're willing to like, be in pain the whole night for just to look good. I just don't feel my feet anymore. So there you go. That was a really good list. thank you so much I want to get those What are you loving?

34:38Charlotte Collins:Oh What am I loving? No this is not called What are you loving? Have you got any Fashion Oh sorry Different section Come on guys It's your podcast I would have never realised that Well Okay I bought the coolest sunglasses in New York Oh my god The silver ones The silver ones Did you see these? No So this is a brand called Bavita Ramesh She's based in Mumbai I mean these are Listen They're not for everyone These are quirky But I really like a fun quirky accessory They're very cool They are wild. Only you could pull those off. I was about to say, I'd get put in a home if I tried to wear them, but you look great.

35:12Charlotte Collins:Go on the website, they have all sorts of really cool, she does amazing metal work with both gold and silver and all sorts of kooky creative. But I don't think, they're weird, but I don't think they're so weird that they're unwearable. And I love having an accessory like that where if you're just wearing something super simple, it just makes it like, you're like, oh, you're cool. It's got that energy to it. So I'm really thrilled with that. And also I love finding something from a brand that isn't really mainstream. Yeah. No one else can get it. No one else can get it. Well, I mean, you can get it.

35:40Charlotte Collins:I've given you the name of where to get it. With a link. Yeah, with an exact link. But maybe don't. Let me have it all to myself. I also want to talk about, I think it's called Vogue Girl, V-R-G-G-R-L, which the fashion team here love. Aussie brand. I believe you can actually get it on ASOS as well, which I didn't know. But they do these amazing dresses, which are for our Ibiza trips. Okay, good, good. They are, can we have a group after this? Yeah, yeah. We just send links. They're like sheer maxi dresses. They're like tank tops that are long but sheer. And they do them in all different colours.

36:12Charlotte Collins:There's like a black one, a white one. There's some that are sequined. Like cottony or? Just more like a mesh. Okay. But just really, really cool over a swimsuit. You know when you want to like cover up in some capacity and like you can't see all your skin, but like it's not, you know. You can still see your bod. Exactly. About 100 quid each. I think that's key because I think people get too direct. They over thought it and then there's too many bits and pieces. and actually for the day especially. Yes. Just you want to throw that on. Exactly. And it's so much, I mean she says that, I've always got everything out, but I think it looks so much chiquer if you're like, you don't look tight.

36:45Charlotte Collins:Also you're like, I'm a sweaty girl and I can't be at a beach club and just be like sweat free. So less layers. Yeah. Is better. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Hodges, what are your fashion finds? I'm going to be super quick. I have just got a pair of those cobalt blue trousers. Lucy Williams has done a collab with nothing underneath I'm quite pumped to wear them because it's quite a strong colour but nice with a white vest and then flip flops I feel like Monique is nailing that whole look at the moment I love a colour of trousers I've got a mauve pair from Lissette their carpenter wide leg trouser is such a good shape it goes out and in at the right places but they're so handy and like good on holiday good for the city I think they're like a good staple for summer did you know that they have a t-shirt that Harry Styles wore which went completely viral and it's like they cannot keep it on the shelves because it's a Harry power of Harry it's a little crotch number yeah so good I do love the set you also have on your list Gel by Essie I gave up Giles in January and how are you doing?

37:55I just I really resent going to the salon it actually puts me in a mood yeah it's the worst

38:00Charlotte Collins:like it actually makes me rain my nail girl knows i hate it i'm like hey she's like joyous as ever yeah i really don't like it and also my nail you know i put my nails into the lamp and it was owie yeah um so anyway i gave them january and i feel like i've given myself a gift of time and then gel by assy have just launched this new gel and i love them and it took me like five minutes and it lasts for two weeks and you can take it off with normal nail polish remover so So it's not a heat? No. Okay. So it's just you pick your base color and then you do a top coat. Okay, nice. It's so funny, nails.

38:33Everyone has such strong opinions. I think more than ever, it's like free the nail is what everyone's calling it. Yeah, okay. And in the book, there is a whole nail chapter. So many nail techs have been like, thank you so much because nails are such an afterthought to hair and makeup. And actually, like, for me, I'm thinking my nails are at the end. Like, it needs the next appointment. and the way it, like, it just changes your mood. Totally. That fresh manicure, whether it's gel, whether it's not, the way it makes you feel, you just feel so much more put together. And I think you feel more, you honestly feel more confident when you're talking or if you're going to walk into a job interview.

39:12I don't know, for me, I'm so team manicure that I just, I know it takes a long time but I find it so worthwhile. I sit there and resent it

39:19Charlotte Collins:but I would never skip an appointment. I love your nails like that. Do you? I love them. So this is big for me. I'm never a short girl. I know. I think they look great. Thank you. Well, I was similar to you. I'd gone three weeks and I do biabs. So they really don't budge. And they were long even when I first got them done. And by the end, I got back from New York and I was like, just get these. I was like, just, I just don't want to ever look at them. I just need to go fresh. It's like their claws at the end. They were claws. I couldn't do anything. I couldn't type. I couldn't take my lenses out.

39:45Charlotte Collins:Like, I was just. Oh, my God. And it's quite liberating going short. And anyway, they grow. So, you know, they'll be fresh. Because it's cheap. I have to relearn how to type every time I do this. Because when you've got long nails, you've got to press like this. It's completely different. Oh my God, that is so weird. You do this like in the car, if you need to press, you go like that. Everything's a press like this. Because I've never had long nails. So these extensions? Yes, for the first time ever. They look great. And everyone keeps laughing. I'm like, so how are you? And they're like, why are you doing that?

40:12Charlotte Collins:Why are you posing like that? You change everything. But you feel the glam, right, when they're long.

40:20Charlotte Collins:okay we're skipping the celebrity section because we've got our own celebrity in our midst we've got to talk about the book hang on let me extract it from this she's been hiding it i've been thinking this whole time charlotte put it behind the mug under the lamp i didn't want to sit there throughout the whole podcast and hold it like this here you go give it a nice plug very beautiful i love that font thank you so this is actually um my this is actually my cousin's handwriting she wrote diary of a beauty editor and we printed it yeah um so diary of a beauty editor this bit stresses me out what works what doesn't from the woman who really yeah you know you're gonna back yourself time time to do it yeah um yes five years in the making it's been a real labor of love when i started it i wasn't do you want to ask me questions I'm just going to do it to liberty.

41:09No, no, I will, but stop. Okay, fine. When I started it, wasn't married, didn't have kids, hadn't gone through my whole life story. So I was a very different person. And at the time I gave myself quite a hard time about, just get the book done. And now I'm secretly so happy because there's so many different versions of me in this book. Wow, that's so lovely. You know, on the weekends I had so much time and I was writing about how to get ready when you've got two hours. And by the end of the book, you're like, just do this and you'll be fine. Go. So it's broken up. So it's really, really helpful if you are at that beginning stage, the skin, hair, nails, makeup, self tan, cosmetic treatments.

41:45I do a whole checklist area. So checklist for holidays. And I really thought carefully about this one because it's quite weird to call it a checklist. But there's a cancer checklist in it that I worked with amazing Charlotte. Oh, you did? Yes, because she's done some incredible. She really has. She's created some incredible content because everyone buys you a hand cream. Yeah. when you get a cancer diagnosis they think we'll just give you a hand cream and it's like there are so many things that you want and need and it's such a vulnerable time and every brand says check with the practitioner before you buy it so it's all in the book oh i love that which i just thought was so important to put it in there obviously i've gone through it with my best friend alana who you guys know the jewelry designer when we did spend a day with her she talked about you and how amazing you were when she got diagnosed and how you helped her with all of her beauty bits and bobs.

42:34Well, I think it's really interesting because you feel bad to care about beauty when you get a health scare. And that's what I say in the book. There is this taboo that beauty is nonsense and frivolous, but actually what you see in your reflection every single day is going to determine how your day is going to be. So whether it's your hair, I always say when I've got loads of dry shampoo and my nails are a bit tired, I know that mood I'm in. I just can't be bothered to deal with it. I'm run down versus when you just had your nails done or you just had your hair done and your makeup feels great yeah and you just it changes your personality so the big thing I say is this is how to feel good as well as look good and then yeah it's just really useful really practical but in each chapter I do letters so I answer I answer letters in my column at Sunday Time Style and I've tried to put that all the way through the book so the woman going through menopause the teenage boy who's struggling with his skin, the man with his receding hairline or the woman with her receding hairline.

43:32I really try to talk to everyone, the new mums, the people who don't feel seen in the beauty industry. Hence, it started as like 230 pages and we finished on 303 pages and the publishers hate me.

43:46Charlotte Collins:But hopefully it will be worth it. I was saying to you before that I love, I didn't expect it to be so full of product recommendations as well. I was flicking through the fragrance section yesterday and you were like, these are if you like this type of fragrance go for this and if you want to buy fragrance gifts but not actual perfume then like this is what you go for i just thought it was genuinely it's a manual for literally like isn't you wouldn't need to touch any other beauty advice ever again right i think that's every time i finished a chapter and i would reread it i thought is this just an instagram post i didn't want it to be there what's the difference so what i try to do is to make it so that it was practical useful and storytelling all in one yeah so when you read it it's got everything in there so as charlotte was saying there's the 10 pound fragrance but also the fragrance that's going to be your summer holiday one your date night your weekend one and i just want people to smile and feel joy as they flick through you you don't have to read every word although do it's great but you know you don't have to you can flick through yeah pick the bits that speak to you people have said they've just read it and they've really smiled it's me with my frizzy hair struggling and how i the chapter's called bk and ak so before keratin and after keratin and it's all about how it just changed my life like I didn't used to go out because I was so embarrassed of my hair I would honestly not go on holidays with my friends because I thought they're all going to be swimming every day I was so self-conscious of my hair and now I'll go on tv and the questions will be like what's your hair what's the secret to your hair I cannot believe it's me yeah yeah being asked about yeah about my hair now like I've come so far and everyone says oh what made you become a beauty editor and I think beauty editors are quite sort of strange creatures like as in we've all got our own isms of why we became a beauty editor some people love fragrance some people love makeup and for me it has been from the very beginning problem solving i love it's what makes me tick getting that message saying thank you so much my skin is so much better thank you so much my child now has the confidence to feel great in her skin you know thank you so much a beauty industry never speaks to me i'm 72 and suddenly I feel great like my eyelids are crepey but they look great with that one eye shadow yeah so it's it's problem solving and that is what this book is it's pro it's your friend it's your it's your yeah it's like your problem solving come on we can do better than that what's the catch line your problem solving best friend yeah hold your hand yeah um I really loved I saw a bit um when you were talking about your hair in the book where you say never say to somebody with really frizzy or curly hair just embrace it and because that's how I feel about my skin we were talking before about skin like don't tell a super pale person who hates how pale they are to embrace it and as you said before that's amazing if you can it's not a judgment on other people but you know i think how you feel right it's how you feel and that's the point of you know all the beauty advice that we all give all the time it's there's no should there's no you should do this or you should do that it's if you want and if you can i saw jimmy carr the other day talking about his hair transplant did you see that and it was on the katherine ryan yes on the katherine ryan it was such it was so It was so good.

46:44Charlotte Collins:And he said, he was like, I had a hair transplant recently. And she was like, well, why did you do that? He was like, well, I see myself on camera all the time. And I hated my hairline. And my motto in life is, if you have a problem and you have money, and money can solve that problem, then you don't have a problem. And I was like, this is so true. If you can fix something you don't like about yourself. Why do we feel such shame to fix it? So that's what it is. Like, it's all the things you can do if you want. And it's interesting because a wine editor wouldn't be worried to recommend an expensive wine.

47:11Or a car writer wouldn't be able to. you know if he says this is an amazing ferrari you're probably not all going to be able to have it but we feel we've got to say if what but but you know if you can afford it great but also incredible because there is a whole high street hit list in here because you don't have to spend a fortune to look great as well and you don't have to do it all you can just do the bits yeah amazing i love that what's your thing that you found it's changed everything tan pick tan why do people do that you don't need to wear so much makeup you don't need to why you don't need to do the tan like you don't your hair looks fine the way it is and it's beauty shaming it is and there is so much of that and i always say to people there is a very good reason why that person's doing it and they're probably feeling vulnerable or self-conscious about it so just don't ever say you don't need to do that because they do it they've done that it's the same with clothes people are like we get like it's super chill vibe tonight because i think that i'm so everyone and i'm like i'm gonna fucking wear what i want to wear yeah if i want to be over the top i'm going to be over the top because you only live once and i want to wear what i want to wear what's your thing as bad to say what's your um maybe blush and eyebrows phil holly parks really helped me out yeah same she's incredible god bless holly parks look at me she's in the book of course she is there's actually you were the editor in here when i talk about blush because we talk about the The blush wardrobe.

48:29Oh, yeah. Am I in it? Yes. I've only just met you. You're the number two. Footnote.

48:37Charlotte Collins:Dear Hodge. Let's write back to me in your book. Tell me more. You do. Double blushing, the double blush technique. Yes. We used to always say a foundation wardrobe or a fragrance wardrobe. I think a blush wardrobe is so needed because I start with the cream blush and then I put powder on top. It does not go anywhere. it gives just the right amount of like bounce and so yes I think a blush wardrobe is a real thing but sorry sorry back to you when we did that we did that zoom call um and with Deborah Joseph we did that call and I was like sorry what's that blush and you said you've got three on yes I then I was like oh that's content everything became content and I said I was on the call with this editor who said I've got three on it it's so normal to me yeah but I think the average person would never think to put on more than one blush.

49:24Yeah, so true.

49:25Charlotte Collins:I do three quite regularly, actually. Because at the moment, I'm doing a road one, which is quite an earthy. The pocket blush. The pocket blush. I love that. So good. But not very pinky. And this is different. So I've got the bronzer on. Not that. That's separate. But I do road like here, which is a slightly more terracottory. And then I need the pink, so I do Merit. And then I just set it with a powder blush. Yeah. I'd love to sit here and talk about this all day, but I feel we've been talking for a very long time. So we're going to end with some listener dilemmas before we do that, give a very hard plug to the book.

49:54Charlotte Collins:Is it out now? It's out today. The book is out today. This is launch day. Thank you guys for your support. Love you both. It's out today. But really the whole point of it is it is beauty for absolutely everyone. This episode is brought to you by State Farm. 50:29Charlotte Collins:Like a good neighbor, State Farm is there. Plan B is a backup birth control option that's there for you when things don't go according to plan. 51:07Charlotte Collins:let's end by doing some listener dilemmas this is a good beauty one how this isn't really a dilemma but how often is too often to wash your hair well it's all in the book finally enough but it totally depends on your hair right yeah you know do you have oily hair fine hair dry hair thick hair afro hair textured hair there are so many different hair types but it does depend on one your hair type and to your lifestyle you know i could say five days but if you're a gym bunny and you go to the gym every day so it's actually an impossible yeah i still got time i i bet you can go a week eight days i don't wash my hair for eight days i think i'm on day eight now you can see because my hair doesn't go oily it goes dry you can see at the end it's starting to like matte into a bird's house honestly what i would give to be able to go more than two days yeah i've got very fine hair yeah every other day what do you use to wash your hair um well interestingly enough so i've been using a rebate for the last like i don't know couple of months i tend to just use whatever kind of crosses my path but i was in new york for about 10 days and so was did three consistent washes with sam at night because i had two travel ones i love him and i got back and everyone was like have you just had your hair colored and i was like well no i last had it done about three weeks ago but obviously loda said to me yesterday what have you used a different shampoo because i reckon the sam mcknight was bringing out the blonde more than the ariba which i'm happy about or the ridiculous tan was also bringing out the blonde well perhaps um wait i love this question somebody says all my friends are suddenly in their wellness era and i still want cocktails and nights out am i the problem you can be in both can be you do both very well what's the secret to the balance i i have a terrible but i try to do both i'm always tired I always forget my supplements.

52:39I always forget the gym class. But I have a great time. So just do the best.

52:44Charlotte Collins:I honestly think there's, we had a conversation a few weeks ago on the podcast about the should, right? The should, a bit like we were talking about with beauty. The kind of shoulds that we all feel, particularly as women, that we should be doing this. We should be doing that. And like, honestly, we're all just trying our best, aren't we? So if you have a week where you just drink too much and okay, be better the next week. Do you know what my mother-in-law said to me and I've always held onto it. She said, just think of the word enough. Like what you're doing is enough. Stop trying. we all make ourselves feel so bad about ourselves.

53:09Like just do your best and that's enough. And each week will be, you're never going to get it perfect. So each week will be slightly different. But as long as you've done your best, that's enough.

53:19Charlotte Collins:I feel like it's your trick that you have habits. Cause I feel like you are very good at like, you just stick to your routine. So you know, at least if you're not doing anything else, you've got your supplements in that day or whatever. Like every morning when I, when I come to the office, if I have exercised, if I have taken all of my supplements, if I drink two liters of water a day and I've had my smoothie which has got you know all the good stuff in I'm sort of equipping myself to have a good day in the best and feel the best I can and then when I'm drinking three margaritas that same night I'm like it's fine okay and finally uh this is one for us my boyfriend hates my long nails do men just not get nail culture My husband hates my...

54:02He is literally like, what are you doing? Well, because it doesn't look like you to him. Yeah, he doesn't look like me, but also like... I love that. But are you doing that up and down his back? Where he likes that? I should try that. You should do that. Yeah, they like that more. Maybe you'll like him a bit more.

54:16Charlotte Collins:And his balls, I'm sure. Okay, top tip. Cut. That won't be cut. That's definitely staying in. I feel them like that. Do you think, with nails? I'm not sure nails add to that. Scratchy. Ooh. I've got short nails. I don't do it. You wouldn't know. Well, you don't know. I'm literally the biggest prune. I'm not coping. I need to go now. I'm so sorry. I think the problem is dark. I'm not comfortable anymore. The burp. What the fuck? That's not in the burp. Can I say, I think it depends how much, going back to what you were saying before about nails, how much they are a thing for you. Because, like, people always say to me, like, what does your husband think about the fake tan?

54:51Charlotte Collins:I'm like, no, no, this was not, there's absolutely not a conversation to be had. No. Tough shit. And I kind of feel the same about anything to do with your beauty. me say like this is my body my body my choice yeah yeah it's funny because i do sometimes think i want to look really lovely for my husband and that's fine you know you can want to look nice for other people but ultimately you just have to look in the mirror and like your choices that you've made i also think with nails it's that thing of you know when someone who follows you finds you cringe because they know you so well versus someone who doesn't know you who's finding you really inspiring like yeah it's that like your friends are like so embarrassing why is she dancing on TikTok.

55:27Yeah, yeah. But like you've got all these people being like, you go girl. Yeah, you're amazing. You're an icon. If someone knows you, they might be like, we know you're a nail biter. What are you doing under there? Yeah, yeah, yeah. But like the average person is going to be like, your nails look great. Fabulous.

55:38Charlotte Collins:People won't know that it's new. Exactly. No. Yeah. There you go. Okay. This has been the longest podcast ever. Thank you so much. Thank you for having me. Congratulations on your fabulous book. Thank you. We're all thrilled for you. Yay. And it's out today. Please subscribe if you haven't already. I know we keep asking, but it's for a reason. It would be very, very helpful if you did. And we will see you next time. Bye-bye.

The three also dive into the books, TV shows and life advice currently shaping their thinking, including conversations around marriage, money, independence and the pressure of “having it all”. Plus, there’s chat about Ibiza dressing, protein-packed wellness routines, interiors obsessions, cult beauty buys and the surprisingly emotional power of a great manicure.

Also in this episode: the new comedy everyone should be watching, the summer drink destined to replace your margarita and, of course, your listener dilemmas – from long nails and hair-washing habits to balancing wellness with nights out.
