0:00On today's episode of the S.O. Man podcast, we get into whether self-driving cars in London are a good thing.

0:06Tunde Ogunsina:I think they should invest their time in flying cars than driverless cars. Now we're talking. That for me is where the future is. Our do's and don'ts for this Valentine's Day.

0:15Frankie Foster:You know what I am going to do? Traditional flowers. I hate the attitude that flowers can be overdone. Flowers always are nice to receive. And we show off our sporting achievements.

0:25Tunde Ogunsina:I used to train for 100 metres. Did you? Yes, I used to run. In running or sex? This one was a lot of fun, so definitely tune in.

0:39Welcome back to the SL Man pod. I'm your host, Harvey James, the associate editor at SL Man. And today I'm joined by our contributors, Frankie and Tunde. In this ep, we'll be talking about recent cultural moments, any sporting news, our recommendations, then finishing with some of your recent dilemmas. Before we get going, do make sure you're subscribed not only to this podcast, but to our weekly newsletter too, so that you can have access to the key cultural insights, the latest style edits, exclusive interviews, and all that is happening at SL Man HQ. All right, let's kick things off with the outfits.

1:15How you doing? As we do. Oh, sorry. Yes. No, I'm straight to business. I don't care how you are. What are you wearing?

1:23Frankie Foster:I'm very Massimo Dutti today which wasn't planned to wear everything Massimo Dutti but the jacket, the t-shirt and the belt is all Massimo Dutti and the jacket, I reckon I was 21 when I bought this it's had its fair share of weight

1:38Tunde Ogunsina:and it still fits 10 years later I mean I don't know what were you expecting? I mean you would have got taller now you're not growing after 22 two yeah wait sorry 20 20 i've just aged you two years yeah so it still fits yeah uh how many more

1:59Frankie Foster:years who knows and then these jeans i mean i must have said this about 100 times over the last few weeks these all saints jeans are getting somewhere and then um some loafers they are so sort of sturdy and good leather and well put together i feel like i'll have these a long time from um john foster is he your dad he's not although i did tell that joke when i went into the shop because my oh yeah

2:20Tunde Ogunsina:I didn't even put two or two together my dad

2:22Frankie Foster:my dad is called Michael John Foster my brother's called Arthur John Foster and the shop is called John Foster and he did actually find it quite entertaining and gave me some free polish and free socks as well nice yeah it's worth the name drop then yeah where's your belt from? Massimo Dutti as well wow he just felt still fits my waist nine years later

2:42Tunde Ogunsina:oh no I thought bad for saying didn't I? yes I will leave this for last because I want to talk about it But my boots are from Timberland. And then my jeans are from Our Legacy, but they're printed on. So they're not actually ripped. I didn't get into a club in Morocco because they thought I was wearing ripped jeans, which is crazy. That's so funny you're trying to explain. They are wholess. Did they let you in? They let me in eventually, yeah. But they literally came with the torch and everything. I'm like, they were going so low. It was so weird. My top is from Adam Crombie. And then my jacket, which I'm absolutely obsessed with, is from October Edition.

3:16Tunde Ogunsina:so they just did a collab with shot and i just think this colorway is just so beautiful and you could technically wear it on the orange side can you um i mean you could i think the zip allows you to i wouldn't but in the shop they have it like out inside out and obviously there's another patch here so you can actually change it but yeah i just think the coat is just so stunning it looks so warm yes so so so warm i would say go a size up if you're going to buy it this is an extra large but yeah I love it

3:44Frankie Foster:I think it's so nice I do like the Tims and jeans look yeah that's good I'm obsessed Timberland loafers I'm a fan of

3:50Tunde Ogunsina:Timberland loafers that is new to me boat shoes oh fine okay boat shoes I was gonna say Timberland loafers sounds it'll be interesting Timberland boat shoes

4:00Frankie Foster:I've got some yeah I could see you in them with the proper like tread yeah good shoe probably one of my favourite shoes yeah

4:05Tunde Ogunsina:and they go in absolutely everything where's the hat from Sunday so there is an influencer called Magnus I want to say his name Ronning Ronning yeah yeah him He released a brand and they have these in swimming colours. Yeah, it makes you feel a bit younger at times.

4:18Frankie Foster:Like, how about you? We all need to feel younger at times. Yeah, I've gone. Talking of looking young, I've gone for a full Steve Jobs look.

4:27Tunde Ogunsina:But we can technically call you daddy now, I guess. You can't. Please don't.

4:34Frankie Foster:Yeah, what do you prefer? Steve or daddy? Harvey will do. Sorry. but no i am a dad and i've dressed like it today um this is a rise and fall cashmere knit m &s trousers i talked a couple weeks ago maybe a month ago about these like pair of trousers that i found in berlin that are my favorite and just incredible but they've got this weird like plastic lining at the bottom anyway i've been looking for an alternative and olive menswear do one but then i came across these last week and if you're wondering what the smell is in here it's the trousers i haven't taken them off no i was so confused what smell are we talking about no i genuinely wear them like i've literally worn them for a week just really soft useful and i just think gray pinstripe you can lob anything over the top and it adds that little decadence um that i'm appreciating and then i've got all these russell and bromley boots and i've never actually had like a pair of like solid black leather boots.

5:37They're smart. But they're so versatile. Yeah, they're smart. It feels like quite a New York actor look, you know? Trying to make it big in the city.

5:44Frankie Foster:And honestly, the Metaglass is really suit him. Obviously. Yeah, they do. They look really, really good on you. They do. I'm just going to turn them on. You can say that again. What was that? They look terrible. You should take them off.

5:54Tunde Ogunsina:I didn't know that the light flashes when they're on so people can know you're filming. I just thought they would be good for like being indiscreet. Is it too discreet? The light. As in like, does it need to be more obvious? No, no, no, no. No, no, that is obvious enough. We all know the game now. Yeah.

6:08Frankie Foster:Everything's filmed these days. They are quite controversial because people are like going up to people and asking for their numbers. It's a good topic, isn't it? It's a bit of like rage bait. Yeah. Are they acceptable in terms of just filming people without them being aware?

6:22Tunde Ogunsina:I actually would say they're not acceptable. However, with the light, it does allow people to know, right? It's too subtle, I think. and like maybe we're just getting used to the idea of just the fact that we are probably being filmed. Yeah, tune, tune. They would help me though when I was saying about being in the moment. So like - Yes, you said that. You'd have them on all the time. You have to even write about filming content. 100%. You need so much. I do. Meta, if you're listening. I've unleashed something. Yeah, both Killington. You have, you have.

6:54What's everyone into at the moment?

6:56Frankie Foster:I'll start with Arc Community, which is a sauna, coal plunge space in Canary Wharf. I went to on the weekend and the founder, Alana, took a class there. And the reason I'm mentioning it is because if there's anyone that is going to drag me into the realms of spirituality, it was this person. She was so infectious and so intelligent in the way she spoke about the body. she kind of put it down a lens and went far into it that it got to the realm of like frequency she was so smart in the cold plunge while she was talking oh she did like a meditation before okay and it was with bond charge as well it's like red light therapy brand okay we did that and then went into a sauna and we're doing breath work in the sauna which i'd never done before is it is it loads of people doing this yeah yeah it's like 40 people oh it's in the sauna in the

7:48Tunde Ogunsina:sauna is this the place where there's like it looks like an amphitheater yeah that sounds quite intense yeah yeah it's what it's crazy my favorite bits of the whole thing was um they get you to do this thing where you breathe in and then you make like a out and then so 40 people are doing this in one room yeah and you all naturally come into the same frequency and then they keep doing it and you keep going and doing like different voices and by the end i was like having shivers because

8:12Frankie Foster:it was such a connective experience in the moment you genuinely feel connected to all of those people and that sound it's just that sound going through when it's all done do you sort of like snap back into reality yeah that was a bit weird yeah oh well that's quite that's why I'm now connected to because part of the one part of the thing she was like can you hold hands with the person next to you no chance in hell I've got this like geezer from East End just like no way

8:40Tunde Ogunsina:he looked at me and went nah I was like I just I was like can't I but you're all sweaty and clammy

8:47Frankie Foster:and under sweaty You're the fettiest man in a sauna, by the way. You wouldn't want to be sat next to me in this.

8:52Tunde Ogunsina:But isn't everyone fettiest? We're all fettiest in a sauna. I think it's a great thing.

8:56Frankie Foster:It's a great thing. It's a great thing. Actually, this is a weird thing to say. When I used to train jiu-jitsu a lot, my nickname was the eel. Because I'd be that wet, you couldn't get hold of that. That is actually so bizarre. What? I can't even think of that. Can we just clip that? Just that. Obviously, you can train jiu-jitsu in a gi, which is like a robe. or you can train Nogi so you'd be in pretty much like skin tight we call it a rash guard well you called it full eel and literally like you would just fall off me which is really handy because you couldn't get a hold of me but I swear

9:30Tunde Ogunsina:that is so strange

9:32Frankie Foster:if you were holding my hand you'd know about it

9:35Tunde Ogunsina:you know what I think I love everything that Ark is about I love that it's building a community and stuff but my problem is just where it is like I feel like it's quite bizarre for it to be like Canary Wharf. I think Canary Wharf is very corporate, very transient. People come and go. For me, Canary Wharf is like just one big spreadsheet. I completely agree. I find it the most fascinating place in London. But also being there on the weekend, I was like, oh my God, it's really calm. It's quiet, right? I was like, do I like it? You can live there. I was joking to my friend. I was like, I'm going to move here.

10:11Frankie Foster:I'm fascinated by this place, by the way. Yeah, yeah, yeah. This sort of place. Honestly. Yeah, the sort of place, great.

10:15Tunde Ogunsina:I think it should be in West London though. Really interesting you say that because a lot of like wellness is essentially trying to like transcribe natural nature and how we live in nature. Into the modern life, which is urbanized. Yeah, true. Difficult to do that. So it being in Canary Wharf is almost like perfect. Okay. Yeah. I see that point now. If you can do it there. Yeah. You can do it anywhere. Yeah.

10:36Frankie Foster:I am intrigued. I might have to go purely out of curiosity. Should we do a little trip? Yeah. I'll be up for that. Yeah. Yeah. I get to hold your hand. I'm there. I'll be sitting on the other side of the room.

10:44Tunde Ogunsina:I don't want to hold no one's hand. I'm absolutely fine. So they're calling me daddy. I'll be calling him daddy, yeah. Okay, I'll sit next to you now. Hello, daddy.

10:55Frankie Foster:All right, actually, let me know. All right, Frankie, what's on your list? I've been listening to a podcast called Founders, which I have found fascinating. The guy who podcasts is awesome. He basically does as much research as possible into a person, a business, a founder. collates all of interviews they've done any press releases, any articles on them his own research and then he puts that into an hour show where he sort of gives you snippets and then explains his take on it really good ones, the founder of Red Bull loads of fun stuff in there about how Red Bull was built he basically went to Asia saw this product and said Europe needs this and then slowly brought it back actually went to the guy that's stealing to me no went to the guy or business that made it and said let's work together and I can take this to Europe there's loads of cool stuff some things that stood out to me was that got so big as a result of rumours and I bet you heard this when you were young right that Red Bull it gives you wings no there was an ingredient in Red Bull that came from bull sperm never heard that never heard that

12:10Tunde Ogunsina:you heard that

12:11Frankie Foster:yeah yeah yeah that i've like before this podcast i i knew about that it was like bull semen was in red bull and it wasn't wait wait wait and people like my god i gotta try that yeah so they heard

12:23Tunde Ogunsina:it and thought i'm gonna make them more money so there was a you know whole thing about any sort of

12:27Frankie Foster:press or rumors good or bad if they're polarizing and they're exciting nobody remembers the drink that tastes quite nice but you do remember the one with bull semen in it anyway they had such a reputation that made its way into Europe that before they even had rights to sell it in Europe, it was massively sold on the black market in Germany. It was a thing that you were buying cans of Red Bull out the back of lorries and stuff. Because of the sperm? Well, part of the part. But there's loads of sort of interesting stories in the Red Bull one and it seems like an extremely clever marketeer from all the stuff they do with sports brands.

13:01Frankie Foster:They own loads of sports brands, as you know, that aren't profitable in themselves but they are if you consider the wider mirror they do have a coverage so that's that was an interesting lesson isn't that fascinating the fact that their sports empire is so huge massive it shocks me that it's not actually profitable because that implies people are buying the drinks so the yeah exactly yeah yeah yeah so I'm sure some of them are but if you judged individual sports teams as its own business many of them aren't in profit do you think the F1 team is? I would if you consider it might be

13:33Tunde Ogunsina:and his big thing

13:35Frankie Foster:which seems like a very clever guy. Oh, obviously.

13:38Tunde Ogunsina:Red Bull is an incredible business. And tried lots of products and failed.

13:41Frankie Foster:There's a whole portfolio of failed Red Bull products. And it was always the drink that was profitable.

13:46Tunde Ogunsina:As in other products outside of drinks? Yeah, all sorts of different things.

13:49Frankie Foster:And they all failed. Like a Red Bull set. And it could have been other drinks products as well. You say burger. Yeah. I'd love to try a Red Bull burger. And then quickly. I would.

13:58Tunde Ogunsina:Would you not? Come on. Didn't they? I went to Dorian, which is a restaurant in Notting Hill. I went there on the weekend, but it definitely is spenny. They do the most amazing steak, like T-bone, ribeye, sirloin. Like it's phenomenal. Yeah, it was quite expensive. But then I realised when I was there, I was like, just the vibe when you're in there is just like so great. Like you've got this whole line up at the bar where like the chefs are making it and going person by person. There's flames going everywhere. Like the smell is great. It's so tight. The tables are so close to each other.

14:35Frankie Foster:That's controversial. Is that a positive for you?

14:37Tunde Ogunsina:It was at first a negative, but then as the evening went on, I was like, wow, this is actually such an incredible experience. And I feel like it's not something I do all the time. It's definitely something that I would do more like every so often. You're close enough to hold hands with each other. Oh, 100%. Mate, I, on both sides, it's definitely good. Hold each other's like, the gap was like that big.

15:02Frankie Foster:What's the service like? Incredible.

15:04Tunde Ogunsina:We had two waitresses. I forgot this first person there, but the second person there was Mo. She went above and beyond. The second year I looked up, she knew you needed something and they came straight over. They explained every single thing on the menu. I didn't want to have a milkshake with my donut dessert. So she changed the whole thing for me. Didn't charge it for the milkshake, even though it was as one. I just think they went above and beyond.

15:27Frankie Foster:Service is a big thing for me. Big. If you're paying.

15:29Tunde Ogunsina:Yeah, I understand. because you're what I realised you're buying the experience of dining rather than just the food itself and I feel like it was like Max the chef that's there he's actually a friend of mine and that's how I heard about it what he's built is just amazing it's such a good you should all go love it bar the closed tables

15:48Frankie Foster:yeah

15:48Tunde Ogunsina:you get used to it you do get used to it and it does make it like our vibe

15:53Frankie Foster:were you chatting

15:53Tunde Ogunsina:across yeah you chatted so we chatted because I smelt good and both sides said I smelt good

16:01Frankie Foster:and then that's how we started chatting

16:02Tunde Ogunsina:in between two days

16:03Frankie Foster:sat down and everyone was like fucking hell you didn't tell them what you were wearing

16:07Tunde Ogunsina:no I didn't I didn't tell them because I am a gatekeeper and I will never tell a single soul really guys I can't I can't you buy it in a physical shop in London do you order it online this one must give it to me as a present this new one so I've only worn it for two days three days now and I didn't actually like it at first and then now when people start complimenting me I was like yes

16:26Frankie Foster:yeah it's nice

16:27Tunde Ogunsina:I can't stand other people wearing what I am wearing.

16:31Frankie Foster:It's a little bit oody.

16:32Tunde Ogunsina:Yes, it is. It's nice.

16:33Frankie Foster:It is.

16:33Tunde Ogunsina:And I think it's worked on my skin.

16:35Frankie Foster:It's nice, very nice.

16:36Tunde Ogunsina:You should only spray it once though. I've come to learn one spray is enough because I'm someone that will damage.

16:41Frankie Foster:Anyway, you're not telling us. No one's going to know.

16:45Tunde Ogunsina:Oh yeah, cheer. I'm never going to tell you what it's called. Maybe one day.

16:47Frankie Foster:Whenever it was the next one, I'll tell you. But it's not used to us. We can't even smell it. Yeah, cheer.

16:52Tunde Ogunsina:I just know I smell good.

16:54Frankie Foster:It's all you need to remember. I've got a take on that. about gatekeeping fragrances. I think it's lame.

17:02Tunde Ogunsina:Why? Tell me why it's lame. Because it assumes that people care that much. It's more so, I think smell is part of who you are as a being, your personality, right? And I'm so protective of who I am. I just don't want other people. Whilst it's a compliment and people want to smell like me, however, I would just, it's me.

17:23Frankie Foster:But that is assuming that if you told us, suddenly you'd walk into a pub and you'd say it's happened before.

17:28Tunde Ogunsina:It happened before. My first Chanel perfume that I started wearing in the office is Chanel Le Lion and I can tell everyone now. When I started telling people, I started smelling on everyone. And I'm not saying I'm the king of fragrances, but still like, people like when I smell good and I feel like they want to get it for their boyfriends and their partners, which is so fine, but I just want to smell it on our house.

17:47Frankie Foster:Just for a test, what you should do is tell someone the wrong fragrance.

17:49Tunde Ogunsina:That is very smart. And then, I'll be doing that next. Evil.

17:53Frankie Foster:Evil, evil, evil, evil, evil.

17:55Tunde Ogunsina:But yeah, Chanel Le Lion, you've all heard it now. Go and buy it because it is a very nice fragrance. We're going to get that out of you one day. You'll get it when I'm over this one. That's when you'll get it. How long? I think I will do this for summer. So you've got like October. Do you have a fragrance? Tune in in autumn. Tune in in autumn. Do you have a go-to? I do. And I'm going to tell you guys. Okay. It's called Osmanthus, I think 19 Lilabo. Yes. Yes, their Kyoto special fragrance. Yeah. It's just delicious. like so fresh yeah I'm not a huge fragrance guy and maybe that's why I'm like why do you care so much I care a little bit I got more into it actually and I do love this one do you have a do you have a go to

18:40Frankie Foster:yeah but I've forgotten it I'm not gatekeeping it as soon as I asked you that I was like well yeah you can just say that as well you forgot

18:46Tunde Ogunsina:oh yeah I forgot but it's good actually and you look

18:49Frankie Foster:yeah as you not a massive fragrance guy I'm huge huge huge just Lynx Africa for you then

18:56Tunde Ogunsina:yeah damn right Mate, can't go wrong. It's so simple. A quick reminder, if you're enjoying this episode, just go ahead and subscribe so that we can keep making the content that you so clearly and dearly love.

19:11For the headlines.

19:13Frankie Foster:What's going on in the world? Go on, Tunde, kick us off. Grammys was lit. Yes, it was.

19:19Tunde Ogunsina:Yes, the Grammys were over the weekend. And obviously one of the biggest points amongst the winners was obviously Justin Bieber coming back. first performance, I guess, externally in four years, I think it was. I think there was a lot of controversy over what he wore. So he literally was in boxes, played to a guitar. Just boxers? Yes. Silk blue boxes. I think a lot of people didn't like that. And I'm not too sure what, I just feel like, this is just who he is now. Maybe this is controversial, but he seems quite sad. Do you think? No, but the way him and Hayley, they look so in love, no? I saw him at like, was it the album launch party was the one who filmed at that launch party and it was like they just got a load of like people together just to listen to her and he just looked quite sad like listening to his own music just I just quite like in the zone you know like part of it like vibing entirely I don't think Justin Bieber can ever be like a fully normal balanced I think he can would you trade

20:15Frankie Foster:would you like that with his life I he's obviously incredibly successful but it comes with his negatives

20:20Tunde Ogunsina:I think I would like no I mean like Like, because having to get, like, I've seen him, like, when there's, like, cameras in his face, and, like, seeing him get to that point, it's like, you have to. So that level of fame. Jacob Lordi got a bit of, well, I say a bit of sticks. Some people were saying. And all he said to a paparazzi was, like, please, guys, you're, like, you're making my life difficult. Yeah. Can you just leave me alone at the moment? And some people took that as, like, oh, he's so. He's such a hard life. Yeah, yeah, yeah. You can't even just do this. But, like, I don't think any of us can comprehend, like, the level of, you know, they are just human.

20:54it's a human experience and that must be

20:56Tunde Ogunsina:I'd like to be a silent millionaire same billionaire let me go let me aim for the stars yeah I couldn't be silent no I could I could I could I don't want to make my money from like being in everyone's faces I want to have loads of businesses that's why author's quite good yeah no one really knows your face yeah but J.K. Rowling everyone knows well no one knows she did too well

21:19Frankie Foster:yeah and Bad Bunny at the Grammys as well

21:22Tunde Ogunsina:oh yeah

21:22Frankie Foster:An almost entirely Spanish album, winning best album of the year. It's pretty cool. Yeah, incredible. Is that the first time ever? I think so. I think it is. Yeah, I think so. Just like how that music is so good that even though it's not in our language, we still enjoy it. That's frequencies, bro. Get Bad Bunny in the sauna would be a different kind of party.

21:40Tunde Ogunsina:But he's performing at the Super Bowl. He's doing the halftime show. And I also realised his tour, he's not doing any US dates because obviously what's going on. I think it's incredible for him to do that

21:52Frankie Foster:good bunny

21:53Tunde Ogunsina:yeah good bunny exactly good bunny

21:56Frankie Foster:do you see what he's wearing as well no very cool he was in a tux that was skiparelli if that's how you pronounce it which I think has nearly always been

22:06Tunde Ogunsina:women's wear they've done a couple

22:07Frankie Foster:of guys red carpets and stuff like that but from the front it was a tux pretty traditional and in the back it was laced up as like a ladies dress might be stunning did you see

22:16Tunde Ogunsina:his Calvin Klein advert oh my gosh sorry he's a beautiful man

22:24Frankie Foster:and has great music yeah great music see we don't know the words I love

22:31Tunde Ogunsina:I've listened to it a lot then also there was football on the weekend as well there was Chelsea West Ham which was quite crazy crazy to watch I'm sure you

22:41Frankie Foster:I didn't I was in a racing bubble over the weekend so tell me

22:44Tunde Ogunsina:so I always butcher the name so Traore Traore and Cucurella got him up a brawl which just sparked other things and basically took him down by the neck and he actually didn't get he didn't get any yellow card nothing at all because I've actually met Cucurella and he is very small what's funny about that he didn't get any punishment for that at all no none it's because everyone's

23:10Frankie Foster:scared of him yeah he's he's hench huge like massive yeah unit real real unit you got an idea of like a football player. He's like a wrestler. He's like bulging muscles so fast. I think he's in the wrong sport, yeah. Yeah. He just can't finish.

23:25Tunde Ogunsina:In what way? Well, I only know about one way. We'll be riding hands with him in the sauna. I'm right on my turn. So Waymo, right? Oh, yes. Are a self-driving taxi company. Yes. So they've been in San Francisco for a while. Actually gone quite well with their tests. Yeah. only running over a much-loved San Francisco cat. That's a PR nightmare. That's a PR nightmare. People love cats. Shouldn't laugh, but it's slightly comical. Is that the only incident they've ever had, just a cat being? No, I think there was some other stuff. Okay, fine. Have you ever sat in one? No, never. Have you? I have not yet.

24:06So they're going to, hopefully, the idea is to bring it to London. By the end of this year, ridiculously optimistic, won't happen. But thoughts on self-driving taxis in London.

24:16Frankie Foster:what's the benefit of them well it's cheaper for the company to run it yeah I guess I mean if we're vouching for our London black cabbies you'd have to say no in terms of actually taking one I think it's one of those things you just sort of roll with you don't consider so it's a very human thing isn't it you don't consider the safety of things if everyone else is doing it I'm really against it I'm sort of struggling to be for it I think the for it for me is like oh that's cool but then once you pass that novelty bit like what's different and a full car as well do you know what would be cool like a self-driving pod you just hop in and whiz around

24:55Tunde Ogunsina:they have those at Heathrow Airport between the car park and the airport what singular pods you can sit in yeah yeah yeah and they just whip you around I do it all the time when I park though obviously it's the future I think that it should not come and I've got some reasons why I think my first reason is because - The cats. Not the cats. I just think it's the connection. Like we love getting in a car and a cab and asking and talking to the driver and ask about their day and going in a cab and like knowing that this cab driver knows every single route to get to in London. Like you're gonna miss all of that.

25:34Tunde Ogunsina:And then I also feel like San Francisco is already chaos, but in London, in England, I think we are chaotic too, but we definitely have a lot more emotion. I think Brits are already crazy. Cyclists are also crazy. All the roads mental. To have an algorithm trying to veer through roads and there's a pedestrian wanting to cross the road. I just don't think the UK or London is ready for that. Because American cities are built with cars in mind. Literally, jog walking is illegal. Yeah, yeah. They keep people out of the roads and the roads are like grids. So it's much more simple. And London and other European cities have not been designed for the car in mind.

26:20It's a natural growth from its medieval, even before that origins. So like for an algorithm to try and understand that.

26:27Tunde Ogunsina:There is no way. Cyclists, with cyclists alone. Exactly. Cyclists are some of the fittest, but also craziest types of people on the road, I think. I like your first point. Oh yeah, about the chat. Yeah, the chat.

26:40Frankie Foster:We should be cautious of moving towards a society that is just like, I wake up at home, I get in a car and no one's in it. I have my headphones plugged in. Where are the people? Is that a good life? No. I don't think so. I just came back to Ireland. Convenient, yes, but connection. My taxi driver from the airport to my hotel in Ireland, about half an hour, nonstop chat. And did you like it or did you not like it? Loved it. Loved it. I was learning all about his kids. He's got three kids. One's married in Denmark, one's in Ireland, one's in America, in New York. he was telling me about his wife I mean like I learnt everything

27:11Tunde Ogunsina:about this guy in half an hour it was great fun if that comes to London you don't get any of that and it's just like do people actually want to spend time with other people anymore it's just everything is so controlled by computers and robots we should be wary

27:24Frankie Foster:a bit soulless

27:25Tunde Ogunsina:yeah I'm really glad we're all on the same page yeah we are that's nice some people hate being in the taxi and like I'm definitely not one of those people but there's definitely a portion of the population who the idea of a taxi driver talking to them is horrible. No, don't get me wrong. Like at 3am, all you want to do is fall asleep in the car. Yeah, but you can tell them. You can say that. Yeah. I sometimes work in the back of a cab and I say,

27:47Frankie Foster:I've just got something to do. Sorry. Yeah.

27:49Tunde Ogunsina:I think they should invest their time in flying cars than driverless cars. Now we're talking. That for me is where the future is. You are late quite often. Yeah. Thank you.

28:01Frankie Foster:Oh no.

28:02Tunde Ogunsina:We could just fly 10 days in. Yeah, exactly. Oh my God, if I had flying cars, I'd be everywhere So on time. I really would. Is that all it's going to take? I would be so early to everything. I just cram so much in a day, I think, for me.

28:19Frankie Foster:I think for you to be on time, everyone else has to be on the ground, but you're the only one in the air. Yeah, all that, yeah. Frankie, Hyrule Olympic handball. Oh, yeah, this is insane. What is this? Yeah, so there was a handball Olympic tryout announcement that was happening in LA. Okay. And for whatever reason, I guess my opinion is because I'm not saying it is an easy sport, but if there was ever a sport you might just fancy a crack at that you could be all right at, could be handball, you know? What is it? Is that dodgeball? Similar, yeah.

28:51Tunde Ogunsina:Okay.

28:53Frankie Foster:And this video announcing the tryouts picked up a bit of speed. And this girl who was an athlete already, but had never played handball in her life, lived about half an hour from this tryout and said, I'm going to give it a go. and sort of vlogged the doing it and turning up. And she even says when she got there, there was other people that had done the same. People had just thought, there's an Olympic triad. We're not necessarily the best at handball in the world. Let's go and give this a go. And her doing that became this sort of viral moment. I think she was a bit of a creator in the travel industry anyway, but not massive.

29:23Frankie Foster:Videos went absolutely nuts. She did like the day one, the day two. She was talking about her experience, how she approached it. And now she's basically become like a handball content creator. so much so that she had a holiday booked to Denmark, scrapped her holiday plans and ended up playing handball with the Danish handball team. What? And is now talking about basically going around the world playing handball with different women's handball team. Make a career of what you've got. I mean, it's both really fun, but she's quite switched on and she also talks about sort of the fact that she doesn't think there's a desire problem or a wanting problem with people, specifically women wanting to have a go at sports more in access more like an access problem so like the fact that these trials people just didn't know they existed before suddenly everyone knew they existed because of this video went viral and everyone's rocked up like let's give this

30:14Tunde Ogunsina:i wish i had seen that i would have rocked up too

30:19Frankie Foster:it is it is a bit mad and i doubt she's going to make the team but she she was quite a good athlete she went she said she had great fun and the humble community is loving her so she's now

30:28Tunde Ogunsina:this Anvil have they picked the team no oh my god she has to make it just for the PR well I was yeah I was thinking it's got to be meritocracy come on

30:35Frankie Foster:this is the sort of story where if it happens you wonder was this was this planned was this Anvil PR

30:40Tunde Ogunsina:it was fine oh it's like a they've planted it in oh you're so cynical you've got you're 30 now right yeah yeah

30:48Frankie Foster:no longer someone had a great idea that we need to reinvigorate to Anvil I like the idea that like anything can come become viral because obviously like there's you know bakeries around London and there's queues everywhere and I'm like, like noodle shops. And it goes back to, I don't know if you've seen like Ubar Butler. He like worked for Vice, he was a journalist, but he would do these like funny kind of pranks kind of on the internet in a way. Okay. So he was trying to get the place that he lived in Dulwich to become like a five-star restaurant. So he just created to like put up tables and chairs around like his garden, invited his mates around and then like got them to do like Yelp reviews and Google reviews.

31:27and he got it into being like the only five-star restaurant in London. And then people were like booking it legitimately. In his garden? Yeah, and then he had to like carry on trying to make it. A business? Yeah. And did it? That's so good. Well, he's a journalist. It's all kind of like a prank. Fascinating.

31:42Tunde Ogunsina:That is so, just the way people work is crazy. Yeah. Right, last bit on the sport. There's something just around the corner, isn't there? In the sporting world. Yes, there is. it's the winter olympics 2026 hosted in milano cortino milan has no snow yeah so so it's the most geographically spread out winter olympics that has ever been hosted cool wow okay um but no they do they have the alps they have the dolomites there are is that milan no no no sorry it's northern italy oh they're just kind of like calling it milan because people recognize Milan? Probably that. So nothing's actually happening in Milan?

32:28I don't know actually. Probably. I would say probably.

32:32Frankie Foster:Imagine the merch. Well, oh no. Italian fashion ex-winter Olympics. Opening ceremony is in the San Siro, which is really cool. So that's AC Milan and Inter Milan's like famous stadium. Oh, sick. Okay, fine. It's a historic, brutalist building. Yeah, it's going to be hosted there. That's sick. And the closing ceremony is in an ancient Roman amphitheatre. Also very cool. So quite fitting. Yeah. Some other facts.

33:04Frankie Foster:The Winter Olympics is very cool, isn't it?

33:06Tunde Ogunsina:It is cool. And that's it. I definitely am going to be in my heated rivalry era when I'm watching it. I think the ice hockey is going to be crazy. I reckon the ice hockey is going to be the most watched sport. It's so good as well. It's such a good sport. It's so good. Their sport they're bringing is called Scemo. Ski-mo? Gosh. I did a bit of reading on it. And interesting. Yeah.

33:29Frankie Foster:Wait, what's this?

33:30Tunde Ogunsina:What's ski-mo? It's essentially an event where you walk up the mountain. So you've got the skins on your skis that allow you to walk up the hill. Yeah. Not a hill, mountain. And then you trek along the top. And then you take your skins off and ski down. So it's just like a race. But they've just added it this time. Sorry, it's a race. the sport they've brought to the Olympics. You know, every country's allowed to bring a sport. Okay, cool. I just think you're ruining a good ski, aren't you? Yeah, you are. Why add the walking and the hiking in the hills? Do you think our Olympic athletes these days

34:04Frankie Foster:are less famous than they were? I think they could be.

34:06Tunde Ogunsina:No, I actually think they're more famous than they are.

34:09Frankie Foster:Yeah.

34:10Tunde Ogunsina:Olympians, because obviously there's social media now. Yeah. And they've all got their socials and they're all showing what they do the best on their socials. From a social perspective, I think they are more famous. Are they actually celebrities? Maybe not, but maybe on social. I don't know if that considers the same thing. Who are the biggest Olympian celebrities, would you say? Right. Winter as well. Winter. I couldn't name you a single person that's playing for, sorry, this is going to sound stupid. Are England, Great Britain in the Winter Olympics? Yeah.

34:40Frankie Foster:Okay, fine, good. They were Bob's Day team. They are savage athletes. Really? They are the most, probably the most powerful athlete that exists. What, Bob's Day? Yeah, Bob's Day. They're like sprinters times five. Yeah, it's incredible.

34:51Tunde Ogunsina:You just train for 10 meters.

34:53Frankie Foster:They are so strong. If you ever see them in the gym, like how they will jump, how they'll sprint, what they back squat. Surely they're just doing that pull thing. No, but it's the weight. It's the weight they push. Pull, what are you pulling? Well, it's in the same direction. So pulling is that way. No, like, you know, they're like dragging a sled. No, but they push it. And then they jump in. No, I'm talking about the gym. The Olympic knowledge in this room. No, I know that's what they're doing. I'm talking about how do you train for in a gym? You can't just like have it. You push. So I think you're like, you're pushing the sleigh.

35:27No, no, no. In the gym. Loads of like jumps,

35:30Frankie Foster:back squats, power cleans, any triple extension is the correct terminology.

35:35Tunde Ogunsina:But you're pushing that thing with the weights on up and down the track. Oh, you can push it. Yeah. I'm not just putting it. Yeah. It should be a good Olympics. I think, I think, I just go back to Hittie Ravry. I think Hittie Ravry definitely will propel it. I'm going to try and get into it.

35:54Frankie Foster:Yeah, I'd like to say I will, but I think I'll be lying. I'm going to ironically watch the curling and see how we go. If you could

35:59Tunde Ogunsina:have a gold medal in any sport. 100 metre race, 100%. There's no other race. It's the biggest, it's the biggest. Yeah, I know that's the one. Yeah. The fastest in the world. And I have you know, I used to train for 100 metres. Did you? Yes. I showed you for Harry Aikens. He gave my first spikes. He's a nice guy. Very nice, yeah. Could have been me the Olympics. Sorry, Usain. Should have been me. What's your time? Oh, I can tell you that.

36:27Frankie Foster:11 seconds, maybe?

36:29Tunde Ogunsina:Wow. I just didn't continue. What did you say? 11 seconds. What? As in running or sex? I thought you were talking about sex. That's equally as impressive, to be fair. Are you timing it? I don't think I could finish in 11 seconds. Come on. So, Tunday? Yeah. enough of that chat you have a a wild sporting history yeah i do i do i do is there anything else in the locker that we need to know about no yeah when i was a lot younger um i was actually a ball boy from wimbledon so cool yeah i was quite a life-changing moment for me um i was bullied quite a lot when i was growing up and um i actually was like near the verge of like suicide and one of my teachers just could just see how much I wanted to be a part of something and be involved.

37:22Tunde Ogunsina:They had this opportunity. He was a ball boy himself and he brought it to our school and we did trials for it. I didn't actually get through the first time and I went away and like worked hard at it because it was like the first opportunity for me that really showed me I could be part of something. It is a really challenging process to get in. You start training in November, like the year before and you're training every single week until June, July. Like you do a multiple choice test under exam conditions, like multiple tests online. And I eventually got in, I did some finals. It was honestly the best experience for me.

37:55Tunde Ogunsina:It was the point where I got it as a tattoo on my leg. So a tennis court on my leg. Cause it just means so much to me. And all my tattoos on me just have a purpose and a reason behind it. But yeah, that is one of my, did it go well for you? 100 million percent. Some of my best friends to this day,

38:12Frankie Foster:I met because I was there. So yeah, I would change it for the world. Were you nervous?

38:16Tunde Ogunsina:Oh yeah, I fainted on court. Yeah, I fainted on court when I was 13. I fainted face planted on the floor, on the ground. Had a bruise down my face. How did you miss that detail?

38:26Frankie Foster:Oh, sorry.

38:26Tunde Ogunsina:Yeah, it was the worst thing ever. I've got it on video at home. It's so bad. I'm never, ever going to bring it up. You're probably pleased that we were maybe just before the social media. Oh, 1000%. As you would have been a ball boy meme.

38:39Frankie Foster:Mate, I definitely would have been.

38:41Tunde Ogunsina:I face planted in the ground, like fell straight forward.

38:46Frankie Foster:Was it before? So I had never been on a show court before.

38:50Tunde Ogunsina:So how they train you, you get trained on outside courts because there's not that much of an audience. But on show courts, you need to be the best, right? So I got through to the training for the show courts and they put us onto one of the show courts. And you walk on first, everyone applauds you as you're walking, you're on because you're the first people on court. And then we're just standing there. and all I know is five, four, three, two, one blackout on the floor and I've woken up I've got the umpire in my face checking if I was okay I was so embarrassed I was so embarrassed we were changing for the world that's so cool though yeah I know so on my CV to this day it's great it's at the top amazing I'm never getting rid of it and amazing it was such a transformative experience as well yeah 100 % it definitely like made me think about things a lot differently

39:41right let's finish with some listeners dilemmas so these are all from the sheer lux community app

39:46Frankie Foster:thanks so much for getting in with your dilemmas by the way this first one slightly controversial what do you think of makeup for men is it a yes or is it a no well i guess it depends on i i think that's quite it's quite a broad question yeah because is it like drag queen makeup or is it

40:02Tunde Ogunsina:like makeup to just conceal and just cover up blemishes? Like what is the extent? Philosophically, are you for or against other people? No. You can do whatever you want. Oh yeah, you can do whatever you want. Of course not. Yeah, I wouldn't wear loads of makeup. I would wear like, I either have bags. So what do you use then? I'm Dr. Jarp. But it's like a sun cream, but it's also a concealer. It's one colour, but it's for so many different skin tones. It just works perfectly.

40:32Frankie Foster:and it just gets rid of like any, like just bags under your eyes or any like blemishes on your face.

40:37Tunde Ogunsina:That's all I've ever used really. Definitely think it's a generational thing as well.

40:40Frankie Foster:I think our parents,

40:42Tunde Ogunsina:they probably would be so against it. But I think now it's people's personality and how they want to conduct themselves, isn't it? I use a little bit of concealer as well. Yeah. And I have done probably for the last 10 years. I remember like when I started modelling maybe 10, 12 years ago and like I was a teenager, I had like blemishes and stuff. I remember asking my mum and sister like, what do I do? I've got a shoot tomorrow. And they just gave me this, a golden stick. I'm pretty sure I had that. A golden stick? Because then it's like a, it was a touche clat. Of course, that's a touche clat.

41:13Tunde Ogunsina:A touche clat. So it's like a little, you know, pimple hider.

41:16Frankie Foster:Oh, okay, fine, yeah. And I must have had that for genuinely about 10 years. I just used it sparingly when I needed it. Okay. So, do you think men should wear makeup? Yes or no? It's kind of...

41:29Tunde Ogunsina:You don't need to be able to answer if you're talking about yourself.

41:32Frankie Foster:do you want to well i do yeah yeah i think and also we should talk about the slightly changing mentality of it yes slightly changing culture in the modern day it is becoming more prevalent more normal like k-beauty is is changing the way that younger guys are like engaged with makeup as well so it's definitely becoming more normal do what you want yeah yeah whatever makes you happy next one what's everyone doing for Valentine's Day and do you have any good ideas what to do I'll be spending Valentine's Day on my own in Saudi Arabia at the Saudi Cup because I'm working in Saudi on Valentine's Day the race is actually on Valentine's Day

42:11Tunde Ogunsina:oh no way do they do Valentine's Day in Saudi Arabia don't know they do horse racing that will be my Valentine's Day

42:17Frankie Foster:but I will be I will be figuring out a Valentine's Day plan in my absence no I am going to do traditional flowers I hate the attitude that flowers can be overdone. Flowers always are nice to receive.

42:31Tunde Ogunsina:What am I doing on Valentine's Day? I have not a single plan. Me neither. Yeah. What do I do? What the hell do I do? Yeah, what do you do? Flowers. Yeah. Yeah. I always like berate myself around Valentine's Day because I'm like, you do get flowers on Valentine's Day but then I'm like, about all the other days? Yeah, true. You're like, I need to remember to get flowers on other days. Yeah. Yeah, funnily enough, flowers on Valentine's Day. I have guilt around that.

42:57Frankie Foster:It's almost better if you've also got flowers on other days. Yeah. So it doesn't just look like, oh, it's Valentine's Day, let's get flowers. So I should get some tonight. Yeah.

43:05Tunde Ogunsina:As well as tomorrow.

43:06Frankie Foster:Yeah. And then on Valentine's Day, it's like, oh yeah, flowers.

43:10Tunde Ogunsina:Yeah, I just do this all the time. I just do this all the time. Every day in February.

43:12Frankie Foster:Yeah. I mean, it's the most boring answer in the world, but it's just got to be thoughtful, hasn't it? Yeah. It's got to take a little bit. You have to, they have to realize that it's taking you either time or effort or thought. the worst Valentine's Day present or idea is something that is so obviously like I've just ordered that quickly. Yeah.

43:31Tunde Ogunsina:I actually went on a date on Valentine's Day by accident. First date with someone. Had no idea on the date. We just said yeah one round on Thursday. We booked it like two weeks in advance. Realised on the day it was Valentine's Day. Went to this restaurant and it was just couples everywhere. Yeah I don't know. Yeah I've had that before. Didn't even realise it was Valentine's Day. I had that before but it was with Charlotte my current girlfriend. so it went well yeah true

43:55Frankie Foster:I don't know how I feel about being sorry in a restaurant full of couples even as a couple yeah I'm not sure I like that yeah it's a bit like copy and paste it's a bit of a drone behaviour yeah yeah I think going for a dinner on Valentine's Day and ending up in an incredibly coupley environment actually takes away from it I actually think

44:20Tunde Ogunsina:no dinner on Valentine's Day home unless it's cooked at home. Cute dinner at home. Yeah. No going out for dinner. I feel like it's just on the tin that. I honestly think we're probably just going to get a takeaway because we've got a newborn. Yeah, mate. So that's, that, you know, if you put on a candle, get a takeaway, just have that time. Put a fire on the TV. That's nice. YouTube, three hour long fire. I used to do that in lockdown. To create atmosphere, yeah. Used to do what? Three hour on the wall. Yeah, yeah, exactly. Three hour fire on the wall. But no, we put the Eiffel Tower in Paris.

44:52Tunde Ogunsina:that is so cute I've never thought to do that but that's actually quite cute but I'll stick with my fire but that is cute maybe that's the Valentine's one

45:00Frankie Foster:maybe yeah have any of you grown out your hair enough to comment on the awkward phase oh yeah I've had a man bun I've had all hair from a skin to almost down to here like Tarzan no you have not I've had all sorts of strange haircuts so we've got we've got a listener asking what do I do during the awkward phase of growing my hair out embrace it there's no other option. Wear a cap? Nah, I think, actually, to be honest, you can get haircuts whilst growing it out.

45:30Tunde Ogunsina:It's quite a hard question. What is the awkward phase of growing your hair out? It is quite a hard question to answer

45:35Frankie Foster:because I don't know where they're starting from.

45:36Tunde Ogunsina:Yeah. But if it's like when you're going between short back and sides into... Sort of like it's closer to us. Yeah, yeah. But even longer.

45:45Frankie Foster:Presuming, like I used to get it, clip it on the sides, and now it's going to be something more like... You're like between a mullet, you know it's like it hasn't been cut for that length but this is your point goes back to my point you have a short back and sides with more on top and then you're going to grow it out and then you have to get a haircut where they cut it all a closer length and it's sort of like a softer haircut rather than a you know a quite clearly sort of taper or short back and sides you get them to scissor cut it all over yeah and you get this short but yeah softer looking yeah yeah that Go to a hairdresser's basically.

46:22Frankie Foster:Switch from your barber to a hairdresser. That's the switch you've got to make if you try and make your hair. Barbers are one speed, short back in size. You know what they're doing. Hairdressers will style it for you. I want to know whether you had long hair.

46:32Tunde Ogunsina:Can I ask, are we allowed to say the two dreaded words?

46:36Frankie Foster:Yeah. Was it pre or post Love Island? Pre or post Love Island, yeah. What is Love Island? Funnily enough. This is such a terrible chat for me. Obviously had this sort of haircut in Love Island. and then I had really long hair after it, and then I had a buzz cut after that, and then I went back to this hair about seven years on. Wow. And there was a time when, like, people would just sort of look at me and probably think, he kind of looks like that. And then when I went back to this hair,

47:09Tunde Ogunsina:people are like, that's... Is that how you went back? No.

47:13Frankie Foster:Yeah, and I was a bit bigger for a period. I've looked so different through the years.

47:19Tunde Ogunsina:you see not 10 years the same you said earlier no yeah it's true this probably that's why it's

47:23Frankie Foster:probably lasted because it had four years yeah it's a bit back so that wraps up this week's episode thanks so much for tuning in if you've enjoyed listening to us chat please subscribe leave us a review and share the episode with a friend i know i will

This week on the SL Man Podcast, Harvey James is joined by contributors Frankie Foster and Tunde Ogunsina for a wide-ranging, honest chat covering everything from tech and transport to style, sport and modern dating dilemmas. The team debates whether self-driving cars in London are a glimpse into the future or a step too far (spoiler: flying cars might be the real dream). There’s also plenty of Valentine’s Day chat, including what actually makes a good gift, why flowers will never be overrated and how to avoid the most obvious clichés.

Elsewhere, the conversation drifts into sporting achievements and obsessions — from Olympic handball try-outs and the upcoming Winter Olympics to ice hockey, bobsleighs and a few very questionable athletic claims. As always, outfits are dissected, fragrances are (mostly) gatekept and the lads share recommendations, cultural moments and listener dilemmas, including men wearing make-up and surviving the awkward phase of growing your hair out.
