In short

The SheerLuxe x SL Man collab episode mixes lifestyle chat with “hot takes” on dating etiquette and gender myths.

Guests

Frankie (Ralph Lauren thrifted jumper; preppy style; watches/reads across Netflix), Hodge (Netflix drama fan; discusses Legends with Steve Coogan; wears Abercrombie & Fitch and Mephisto shoes), and Harvey (fashion/content creator; discusses Rivals and other shows; experiments with “No Watch” tech and Zara sandals).

Key claims

men should make the first move, chivalry isn’t dead but is patronising if assumed; first kiss should be initiated by men; women can open doors/chivalry is outdated when patronising. They debate dating apps (women get more options but more weirdos; men face more rejection).

Notable examples

Legends (Heathrow heroin-era customs spies), Money Heist spin-offs (Berlin), Rivals season two (full-frontal and a sex scene on stairs), and London Falling (a true 2019 balcony death investigation). They also gamify sock obsession and recommend Pears socks; lingerie vs tees/knickers for sleep.

1:31Charlotte Collins:Welcome to the Sheerlux podcast with me, Charlotte Collins. Or I should really say welcome to the Sheerlux and the SL Man podcast. This is our first collab. Hi, everyone. This is the very first official merging of the two brands. It is the Sheerlux SL Man podcast. So I'm joined today by Frankie, Hodge and Harvey. Hi. It's fun. Very fun. So fun. I feel like we've already done a podcast in the 10 minutes that we've sat here waiting. Got carried away. Yeah, loads to chat about. I don't know how you start the SL Man podcast but we start by talking about what we're wearing Harvey can you run us through the fit yeah sure I seem to always wear these jeans when I'm doing this podcast but these are Abercrombie & Fitch quite a casual paint splatter vibe these are from Mephisto a French brand on the shoe and it's like a shoe trainer crossover which I quite like this is Abercrombie & Fitch I'm getting sponsored here by Abercrombie & Fitch shirt and then Roboto jumper and then yeah show us the shoes the cap oh this is also Roboto oh my god oh wow you're really mono branding I'm so like in sync yeah let's see the Frankie wants to see the shoes nice yeah they're cool like a hiking yeah they're cool do they feel like a trainer no right because they've got like grippy it's like quite hard kind of like a boot but like a short boot I'm going through a real phase of not being able to wear trainers so that's why I was interested oh right trainer alternatives what's why from like a fashion perspective awkward in them yeah Oh, really?

2:57Charlotte Collins:Yeah. I don't know why. Like, you can't seem to get it right for, like, a dad in trainers. I actually think that there's a real noticeable, like, no one at Shodaks wears trainers anymore. Like, there was a point where it was a real trend. Yeah. But you don't really see them very much in the office. No. Yeah. I got a pair and put them on. It's just not loving it. If man's shoes are hard, though. They are. They are. I must say, James does not suit a loafer. Why? I don't know. He just can't put it off. Is it because he's got rugby thighs? I feel like if your legs get like that, maybe that's a good shout.

3:25Charlotte Collins:That is. Yeah. Thank you so much. Yeah, I think you have to be quite straight up and down to pull off a loafer. It's the same for women. What do you need instead? I don't know. Like he wears a boot, like a Chelsea boot. Yeah, they're a winner. And then, but summer I struggle. So help me out. Sandal. Ooh. Also like on the beach. Well, he wears a Javi. Okay. Yeah, I know. I got it. Thanks. Sorry. I've never heard it referred to. No, they're not. No one's ever said it before. Ever. You styled it out though. I knew what you meant. Yeah. I like it. But anyway, let's get back to James' footwear. Okay, let's.

4:03What are you wearing? I'm wearing Saint Laurent heels. I love those heels. I know they're really comfy. They're really cool. Jeans from H &M and a top from Stradivarius. I can't necessarily say it. Yeah, it actually is. But teen Stradivarius. Oh my God. Because who am I? You're a child. And glasses from H &M. What about these earrings? Oh, earrings are Bonvo. and I must say they are so handy because they're not too big and they're also really tight to my face which you know I like because of my small head. What's the timepiece? Oh, a Cartier tank.

4:39Charlotte Collins:Boys bring in the timepieces. I like it. What's yours? I'm sort of experimenting at the moment. This is called No Watch which is meant to look it's a wearable like it tracks your data and stuff but it's meant to look like a normal watch. I actually think it really does. Yeah. Yeah. I don't know if it's just a bit plain. So you're double tracking? Yeah, because I was going to say what's going on. I'm double tracking. Well, this is kind of the, well, in an experiment, you need like the one variable that stays the same. So this is the baseline that I can track it against. Nice. What are you tracking?

5:12All of it. Just everything.

5:13Charlotte Collins:I think that's actually, it is a very subtle. I know. That's a good birthday present. How much are they? I want to say like 200 or 300 quid. Okay. That is, no offense, better than that. Yeah. Frankie, tell us about the fit. I am in a Ralph Lauren jumper, which was thrifted from Notting Hill. Cool. The shirt's Cavani. I was shooting with him yesterday, and I was shooting in it and stole it. Or subtly put it in my bag, and they'll bill me for it later, I'm sure. Jeans are next, which I keep saying on every pod. Whoever's doing the fit, as in the cut of the trousers at Next this year is nailing it, or at least for me.

5:46Oh, high praise. All trousers at Next fit me better than most others currently, so they're a super easy wear. and then they're very much indoor shoes outdoors aren't they but I keep wearing these just because I'm quite lazy but some hush puppies with some socks that have King Charles Cavaliers on I was going to ask if they're beagles

6:01Charlotte Collins:they're not beagles they're Cavaliers sweet and my standard citizen watch which I wear every day preppy how about you yeah I'm quite preppy aren't I very preppy today I'm doing a panel later so I've gone corporate-ish today these are cos trousers I wear them a lot this shirt is sir like sir like sister in French um it's the first time I've worn it actually and then this I put on for some extra warmth this is I think this is sir but the Australian sir all right and this is sir s-o-e-u-r I think I've got some jewelry from this brand called heart when we were in New York last week um which does these really sweet kind of customizable necklaces um and like you can get all it's all it's a bit woo woo but like in a really nice way yeah like everything means something so I built I've got a clover for good luck.

6:51Charlotte Collins:There's a match for reigniting your spark. Love. And I've got a little Star of David up here somewhere as well. Oh, sweet.

7:04Charlotte Collins:Let's move on and talk about things we love. Hodge, do you want to go first? What are you loving? I am loving this new drama on Netflix. It's a six-part drama. It's called Legends. It is taking the world by storm. It almost makes you proud to be British because it's such good British drama. Steve Coogan's in it, but playing a serious character. So it's about when heroin was sort of taking over the country in the 80s, 90s. And Margaret Thatcher turned to the customs offices and to deal with the problem. so they took these normal people who were just the people who like at Heathrow were like checking the bags you know you always get the fear when you're driving when you're walking past with your suitcase can I just quickly ask on that because I don't know if boys get this that sense of like when you walk past the police and you're like act innocent act innocent but like I've not done anything guilty it's a girl thing yeah oh you do get that I see that for you I'm just a nervous person even if I'm in the car I'm like Yeah.

8:11It's for girls and overthinkers. Really? But it makes me like pack well, because I think if ever I get caught, not caught, if ever I get stopped, not just out of there, if ever I get stopped, then I want my knickers to be in a knicker bag. Oh yeah. I want to be tidy. Mortifying if they open it and it's just full of dirty. You want them to respect you when they catch you. Exactly. She's a criminal, but she's a tidy criminal. We'll let you off. she's well organized so they take these normal people and they take them and they go on an intense training course and they are to become spies and they all and they say you might never return to your family life after this you're giving yourself up for your country so many drugs are being imported illegally so that's why they were trying to stop it because they weren't catching them so they were still doing their jobs as custom officers no right It's called Legends because they become their legends.

9:10Oh, yeah, that's what it's called, right? But it's wonderful. Quite gritty. Yeah, it's gritty. And you're scared and you see sort of behind the drug dealers' lives and their kids are into heroin. It's fucking dark. And you said it's making you feel quite patriotic. Yeah, and it makes you think, God, we do make the best TV in the world. We do make very good TV. Yeah, it is amazing. And Spies. And Spies. Is Steve Coogan good in this? Yeah, he's really good.

9:37Charlotte Collins:He's really good. He's a serious actor then. Yeah. You know who else I really like as a serious actor? And we were talking about, because he's got a new show coming onto Netflix yesterday, is Sacha Baron Cohen. He's got this new, I don't know if it's a film or a show with Rosamund Pike, where basically he is quite a masochistic, kind of alpha male type in, I don't know, some big boardroom somewhere. Hits his head, wakes up in a world where women are the dominant sex. And she, and you know, this Rosamund Pike character, who was a kind of slightly meek, mild subservient to him, I don't know, junior at work, ends up being the big boss and he's suddenly having to exist in this world knowing what it's like to be a woman.

10:17Charlotte Collins:There's been some criticism, I don't think it's even out yet, but there's been some criticism basically saying that if women ran the world, it wouldn't be that, like it would be something very different. It wouldn't just be women being men. But I think the point of the show is that women are men. I'm going to bet on that to just be men. It's basically like the Sherlock's office. Just let us run the show, really. It's like the Sherlock's office, exactly. To be fair, if anyone's fine with it, it's you guys. So that's fine. It's much easier. It's so much easier to be told what to do, isn't it? Turn up, look pretty, shut up.

10:48Charlotte Collins:Frankie, what are you loving? Lots of Netflix and movies, isn't there, going on? I am loving and have loved Money Heist, which then turned into Berlin, which has now turned into Berlin and The Lady with the Ermine. I'm just obsessed with him as a character. Oh, wow. So what, they've done spin-offs? So Money Heist, if you haven't seen it, was, well, it's a heist. They robbed the bank of Spain. And there's all sorts of sort of love stories intertwined in it and people meeting throughout the heist. It's very sexy Spanish heist. Is it subtitles? Yeah. It was quite a long time ago, wasn't it? Yeah, a long time ago.

11:23Yeah, yeah, yeah. And was like a huge, it got a real cult following in Spain particularly. And then Berlin is one of the characters in it who's this sort of extravagant, romantic, like, I don't know, he's obviously a heist, very wealthy, has hundreds of women and love stories and yada, yada, yada. He then got his own, which was Berlin, and then now there's another one. And I just, I love it. As soon as I saw it on Netflix, I've smashed through the first five of seven already.

11:51Charlotte Collins:Is it similar vibes to Money Heist? Like similar? Yeah, there's another heist. There's all of the characters that have had their relationships build in the previous one. You then find out what happened in the gap between then and now, which is quite cool. Some of them have broken up. Some of them had got married, but then now there's another problem. So it's a lot of relationships, but via a heist. I mean, it's bordering on cheesy, as with any heist. Yeah. It's not... I do love a heist, though. Me too. And I found out Ellie did a junket with Tokyo, which is called Tokyo in the original. A Spanish actress called Ursula Corborel.

12:35Charlotte Collins:She's in Day of the Jackal. She would be my celeb crush. Oh, wow. Yeah, she's the wife. I never ever have an answer for a celeb crush, and now I have one. Have you guys seen Day of the Jackal? Boys, you need to watch that show. Yeah, especially if you like a, I mean, it's not a heist per se, but it's so good. If she's in it. If she's in it, so you like it. It's so good. Yeah, she's so hot. Harvey what about you Amanda Land speaking of TV I love it obviously this has come from is it Motherland yes came from Motherland so this is the spin off of one of the characters in there Amanda and she gets booted out of I think she was living in Chiswick before she has to move to Soha she calls it yeah what is that?

13:13South Halstead yeah yeah so it's like her like really struggling to become the vision of her like how she imagines herself is so different to what her actual situation is. She's sort of pretending to be an influencer and all of the hilarity that ensues with that. But it's just, as an actor, she is incredible. She's so funny. Comedy TV show, it's hard to get it wrong. So it's quite rare. Even, you know, it's not gonna be like incredible, incredible, but even when it's very good, that's impressive to not be bad.

13:44Charlotte Collins:Yeah, so you mean it's hard to get it right? Hard to get it right. Yes, yeah. I think we do, British do comedy the best of nearly anywhere as well. Went to go and see Tama Palo a couple weeks ago. They were only doing one show in London which I felt was mental. So it was so, so good. Like my favourite band. And then halfway through you brought on Dua Lipa. Oh God. Which all the girlies weren't mental. She's my new girl crush. Again, I feel like you're slightly late to the party on this. I know. She's so hot. She's been around for a long time. Yeah, everyone's gross. She's almost out of fashion.

14:18Charlotte Collins:She's my husband's number one. Really? Is she? number one yeah she is hot she's fucking hot yeah she's cool and she's just like and he's hot it's the whole package her and Callum can we talk about more TV because mine is I want to talk about Rivals season two so good which is so good have you guys seen the original series I hope we've seen season one I don't know anything about it if you like Amanda Lange you'll have Rivals oh really oh well I kind of feel it's like it's Western British yeah okay so Rivals is a a book by Jilly Cooper so classic 80s British Romp. Fluff, romp, sex, drama, fun. And it was made into a TV show.

14:56Charlotte Collins:So season one came out last year. Yeah. And kind of took the world by storm. Amazing cast. It's got David Tennant, Aidan Turner. Danny Dyer. Danny Dyer, Emily Attack. Like some really, really good people in it. Yeah. And it is basically, it's about the fictional village of Rutger, which is a fake town. In the Cottholds. and all of their sort of ensuing personal dramas and there's baddies and goodies and everyone's having sex with everybody else. Is it comedy? It's sort of like, yeah. Kind of, yeah. It's like a fun drama. But it's not so dramatic that you'd ever be like, no. But it's just so enjoyable to watch.

15:33The sets and the outfits are so of the time. So it's just so, it would be so fun to dress the set.

15:40Charlotte Collins:You can just tell they are having the best time ever on that set. Like they're having so much fun. Even if you're too young to be nostalgic for that era, there's a real nostalgia in it because it's always summer and they're having all these parties and they're playing polo and they're all dressed in their hair bands. Okay, so it's like posh Cotswolds. And there's like, you know, it's like the typical characters. There's like the heroine, there's the slut. Real thing. Yeah, literally. All right, Moira. But do you know what I mean? You're like, ooh. And also what I really like is that it's not serious drama, but they're properly acting in this.

16:12Charlotte Collins:and it's given people like Danny Dyer and Emily Attack a platform to be a bit more serious and take it a bit more seriously in kind of legitimate dramas and shows that have kind of big budget big production which is cool because they're both amazing in it so and nice to be legitimised speaking of whore passes Aiden Turner oh my god he's had a glow up glow up he's almost full frontal in episode one yeah he didn't look like that in season one it must be so from series one to two he's had a glow up they must be like Like, shit, we are actually, because it's full frontal. Yeah. Boobs and willies. Everything.

16:47So he's probably been like, I've got to do this scene. I need to. Yeah.

16:51Charlotte Collins:I think so. It's a hot shower scene. Yeah. Have you watched episode two yet? Yeah. Because also the other one, what's his name? Rupert. A lot of. Wow. Do you know what sex scenes that I was like, can you even begin to imagine filming that? I know. Like, big requests. Yeah. It's on the stairs. That's. Oh my God, so hot. Yeah. You know Thomas Crown Affair where they bonk on the stairs? I haven't seen that. Are you joking? No. Have you seen Thomas Crown of Fear? No. With Piers Brosnan? Piers Brosnan, no. You are joking. I swear. You have to go home and watch it tonight. Okay, deal. It's with Rene Russo, but it's the newer version of Thomas Crown of Fear.

17:27Is it the one where it starts with him stealing something from the Louvre or whatever? And then she's trying to get him. I think I've watched the first 10 minutes. But the best sex scene, they have sex on the stairs, is so hot. Was it like that opening thing? Because that was hot. Yeah. Must be tough if you're married to an actor Or actress right And it's like a real steamy

17:46Charlotte Collins:I don't know I suppose there's a lot of people watching you I thought that loads about heated rivalry But obviously I'm bringing it back to that Because one of them has a girlfriend And they were filming these scenes And they were all hanging out together afterwards And I'm like but they've been They've been naked together all day Would it be better or worse to get aroused Worse That's so awkward You need to go and visit a set to understand acting. You can't be let loose on a set in this current state. Never. You need training. A lot of misunderstanding acting. You're getting through the basic joke.

18:25Charlotte Collins:That's a lot. I like it. How does someone have a glow up? I think he ate a lot of protein. What happens? Do you just get a hench? I actually do think that protein might have been involved. Does he facially look better? No, he always looks pretty good facially. His jaw is snatched. But he's very, he's very, he's hench now. I don't know. Oh my God. If I knew the answer, I would be doing it. I don't know. That's kind of another pod. When you say hench, like ripped hench or big hench? No, no. He's just lean. He's like toned and six packy. Sculpted arms. His face looks good. Yeah. Just putting his yogurt in the eggs.

18:59Charlotte Collins:In the scrambled eggs. Yeah. I don't think that, I think we talked about that before we started recording. So for context. That's so true. Yeah. We're on a protein journey, aren't we? The girls. Not the boys. the boys are eating pastries for breakfast and the girls are adding Greek yogurt to our scrambled eggs to make games. Yeah, exactly. Can I recommend one more thing which I think everybody here will like which is called London Falling. This is written by investigative journalist Patrick Radden Keith and it is this the telling of a true story in 2019 opposite the MI6 building on the South Bank captured on camera by the MI6 building on the other side of the river a guy who was 21 fell from a balcony to his death and this is the story of who he was how he got there and the dark twisted story that led to his demise he came from a very well-to-do family grew up in St John's Wood privately educated and everything went very wrong he got very involved with lots of shady characters and it's not just a really juicy story it's also written so well it could be fiction um and a lot of people talk about it right now because isn't it about sort of the nightlife in mayfair yeah he got very he got very seduced this guy by the kind of oligarch scene in the teens the 20 teens and excited by yeah the kind of the wealth and glamour that went into the whole of that kind of mayfair lifestyle and there were a couple of guys i don't want to say too much there were a couple of guys with him in the apartment that night that he felt his death but he wasn't pushed that was caught on camera so it's about trying to piece together why he jumped yeah apparently it is incredible it's really really good

20:49Charlotte Collins:let's talk fashion finds what are you what are you loving socks socks yeah I need to up my sock game I say as I have these is this is this the new improved sock game or is this the old just to be before I before we say anything before we absolutely lay into these brand new just to be clear is this the new game? I actually have no idea where they came from to be honest. He's wearing the shirt you wore all day yesterday. I haven't been there. No, they're very sweet. Have you not been there? Is that why you're having an early practice? He was busy with his war pass that's why. A lot's happened in the last 24 hours.

21:25Charlotte Collins:These socks are sweet. Yeah, I like these ones. They're not my shopping though. I came across it was a cool video on Instagram that this girl did saying how obsessed with you how obsessed are you with socks and it was like 10%, 20%, 30 % based on what you did, like how you store them, what pairs of socks you have, what colors you have. Do you have ankle high? Do you have knee high? Like this whole list of being a sock enthusiast, which was by a French brand, Mais Chassette Rouge, which is my red socks. And they have every single pattern, color, material, style. And for what, until last night, wasn't a sock guy.

22:02I'm now a sock guy. That is your soldier. I know how flippant you are. What percentage of obsessed are you now? Oh, I was quite low to start with. My goal is to work my way to the end. My sock sort of habits, and it's quite childish currently. I need to level up.

22:18Charlotte Collins:What does that mean? Do you hang on to the holy ones? No, no, no. I wouldn't wear holy socks, but they're just all over the shop, and it's hard to find some pairs in the morning. They're not stored very well. So I need to level up in my storage, my collection, my style. Your storage. I feel weird to... Like how I store them. Apparently if you fold your socks rather than put them in your socks. I know what storage is. I think that got you to 20 or 30 % if you were a folder rather than a... Oh, no. A roller. Oh, I ball. Yeah, so balling's apparently... But it's quite satisfying that... Yeah. Yeah.

22:55I've never heard so many rules. I was... Yeah, I was... Can you send them round?

Read the full transcript

22:59Charlotte Collins:I'd love to see what the rules are. What's your sock? Yeah, my thoughts on socks is... Simplicity. Because just like, you just need different colours. And if you've got one sock that works for you. Yeah. A sock can make an outfit though. Oh yeah. I feel they can be key. Although, I actually went to the gym yesterday, which was a big moment for me. But I was wearing ankle socks and my girlfriend was like, get them off. And I was like, yeah, do you know what? You're actually right. I just got given them and just put them on. And then I put on some other socks and I was like, yeah. I feel quite strongly that if you still own ankle socks you must get rid of them it's icky for sports as well or a large percentage of guys until you start to think about what you're wearing a bit more you just have black, navy and white socks and that's as far as it goes for a lot of guys I have more socks than that because of mostly from wearing suits where you have light pastel coloured socks which work with suits I have that, but I don't have low-tell.

24:03Charlotte Collins:So good, so good, so good. Everything you want for summer is at Nordstrom Rack stores now. And up to 60 % off. Stock up and save on the brands you love, like Vince, Sam Edelman, Frame, and Free People. Join the Nordiclub to unlock exclusive discounts, shop new arrivals first, and more. Plus, buy online and pick up at your favorite rack store for free. Great brands, great prices. That's why you rack. I really recommend, well, Uniclo on the high street. is really, really good for just buying bulk. But also Pears, which is a brand that we love. Pears Scotland, British brand, obviously Scottish brand.

24:40Charlotte Collins:And they do, I think, the absolute best in class of every single type of sock, whether it's like a merino wool or a caution or a real case of cashmere for bed socks. Yeah, they, and actually a great gift. Cause as you say, it's when people buy you, but like you don't buy yourself nice socks. I was thinking about sending this link to all of my family and being like, this is all I need for Christmas. This is where you go. Socks aren't bad, just get me the right ones. yeah I so agree with that also that got you more points on the hierarchy if you have socks for occasions so you have like obviously your gym socks but then your work socks hiking socks bed socks home socks yes party socks yeah yeah yeah like if you're very specific about these socks for this thing oh yeah you're going up on the hierarchy okay nice I like that they've gamified like being into socks yeah I'm so sold do you know a category that I think is really similar to this I'm competing no one else is playing but you're in it I will win I think pyjamas totally qualify for this as well because there's a point in your life where you're like oh I shouldn't be wearing the same pyjamas you know the free t-shirts that I slept in for the most of my teens like the BCM t-shirts you know they've got to go and you start to think I must level this up I still wear the t-shirt that James was wearing when he asked me out I wear that how old is that it's quite old it's ripped all the way at the back it says on the front I'm naked underneath it I think maybe you're ready to upgrade your pyjamas I know I quite like it I see pajama top.

26:03This is probably TMI. But I think boys like a t-shirt and a pair of knickers. Yeah, 100%. I'm not dressing for boys in bed. I'm dressing for comfort.

26:12Charlotte Collins:Yeah. Obviously, I'm not dressing for multiple boys in bed anyway. But I'm not dressing for boys. Yeah, he's asleep anyway. He's long gone. I was having a lingerie conversation with four guys on the weekend. And we mostly all agreed that a t-shirt and knickers or a silk sort of... Cami. My teed short top and knickers was way better than sexy lingerie. Really? I still agree with that. I love like, yeah. Because you sort of don't know how to get it off. Well sexy lingerie. Yeah, it's quite intimidating. You're like, oh my God. And yeah, like it is gonna come off. Yeah. I've never been a big fan of like lacy lingerie.

26:49No.

26:49Charlotte Collins:I feel like that feels quite dated as well now. Like there was, it's part of an era of like when women thought that's what men found sexy, but now we speak and we know that. Yeah. Like cotton boxer shorts and like a crop top. Yeah. Yeah. That's a winner. Okay, validating all our choices. But also, maybe they don't need to be like old and skanky. As long as Frankie likes it. But they also need to not be old and skanky. Yeah. Yeah. Okay, I'll throw that to you. Yeah. Maybe we should invent the pyjama scale. Yes. I like, yeah, true. Okay, so you're buying socks. Excellent. Harvey, what are you buying?

27:21We're going to do like a styling video tomorrow. And I've got these Zara flip-flops. And I'm seeing them everywhere. Like enough to want to experiment with it. So I think it can be done in quite a classy way. Barefoot. With the flip-flops. As opposed to what? I don't know. I'm worried about men's feet. What's the alternative? You're correct for the shoes.

27:41Charlotte Collins:Yeah, you've lost the socks, Gail. If you think you can wear them with flip-flops. Wait, have you got socks that have each toe? Yeah. Like Marjana socks. We've found out when people wear those individual Pilates toe socks. The shoes. No, the socks. It's like those, but they're a Pilates version. Yeah, okay. No, I'm just worried about men's feet for summer. Yeah, when you do your styling rules, can you talk really explicitly about what groomed feet need to look like? We had this conversation. Yeah, we did. And? We're pretty unkept men. Well, maybe deal with that before you shoot. Maybe I'm blessed with nice toes.

28:18Yeah.

28:18Charlotte Collins:I'm sure you are. I don't feel like mine are that bad. But do you go for pedicures? Do you have... Do you use... Like, do you trim your toenails? Yeah. Right. That's the minimum. that's sort of standard sounds like the minimum and the maximum yeah but I think some men's toes are like naturally just rank yeah it's from sports isn't it gonna get out of that but so they shouldn't wear flip flops but I'm a privileged I have privileged lovely toes so I think I can get away with it that's my thought what's that how hairy are you yeah not very hairy yeah that's all I think that's when toes get gross right when they're super hairy yeah unkept unhairy is a vibe combo yeah and I love that Zara call them leather no leather straps or something like that okay they haven't used the word flip-flops no completely avoided that um so that's the branding that i'm going with okay are they like flip-flops though yeah as in same they've got like a nice kind of like leather strap so it's a bit thicker so it's not like your thong yeah what color like it black just black and then like a nice black leather base a good sandal with a linen trouser is a good look a good sandal with a linen trouser Yes.

29:25Charlotte Collins:But what kind of sandal for a man? Well, that's not miles off. Yeah, like a leather. I like an espadrille for men for summer. James wears espadrilles. Hodge? What are you shopping? I am loving Atelier 95's new drop. She's so good. She's so gorgeous. We had Melissa Bell. She did a podcast with her, and I just love her. Yeah, she's awesome. I've got a trench of hers, which I've worn on Stop. You've got the same one. I do. And she's just done a new drop, but I've got a lace shoulder pad jacket. And then a mini skirt, which is also, she was very see-through, I tried to on last night, but obviously the jacket covers.

30:01Okay. And then she is also a sort of lace scarf, which you tie around your waist. And also some really gorgeous cream trousers, like wide leg cream, satiny, silky trousers. Nice. But like heavy. Okay. Because there's nothing worse than that clingy. Nice grip. Yeah. And quite long. and then a top that goes with it, which again is heavy, so it falls really nicely. Like a low end of the arm. Okay. And that's so sexy. Yeah, cool. Are shoulder pads in? Yeah. Are they?

30:33Charlotte Collins:They have been for a while. We actually all buy them. So as well as, you can obviously buy items that have shoulder pads and then this is not really a pad. But you can also get, we all buy on Amazon, like actual shoulder pads and you can, you basically, they have a thing where you can hook them to a bra strap. So like imagine you slotted them in here and then you have a little popper that goes in. I should have put them in there so everything's like that. What about you? I haven't bought much recently but what I did press purchase on yesterday was in the last season of The White Lotus, the one set in Thailand, there was a really iconic outfit that the French girl who dated the creepy old...

31:10Charlotte Collins:Do you guys see it? Okay, so the French girl who dated the creepy old man who was Jennifer Cooleridge's ex, the one who took the young boys on the boat party and everything. So she wore this amazing pale pink jacquemus total look which was a swimsuit that was just like very super pale has a has a boat neck but like a chic one not like it's jacquemus it's not like a kind of you know petty bateau boat neck yeah um and it's just like a really simple almost like a like a shift dress would be but for a swimsuit and i did purchase that okay let's move on let's talk about celebrity our crowds out of out of Wimbledon and Roland Garros.

31:52Charlotte Collins:That's terrible. Sad news. It is sad. Yeah, it's outrageous because he was winning everything, wasn't he? Just on an absolute charge. And he's had a glow up. The glow up isn't funny yet. Yeah, he's still a bit young. Yeah, the pace of his glow up I'm finding frustrating because it's there. Like the raw material is there. Yeah. Okay, yeah, yeah. Like he could be super hot. He needs a better haircut, doesn't he? The hair's not quite right. His hair is like a tennis ball. Yeah. He's so young though. How old is he? And he obviously hasn't got a girlfriend. No one's taken him in hand. I thought Emma Redicanu and him were going to hook up.

32:25Charlotte Collins:Well, I think that was a rumour. But then I think everyone got annoyed about that being a rumour because they were like, you're just assuming that. Oh, really? I just thought they'd be cute together. Yeah, they would. Sweet. But yesterday, because I said to Ben, oh, that's in a way like, okay, it's obviously really sad, but at least we might get a more interesting final because it's different people. And he was like, yeah, but did you see what happened? whatever it was, the most recent tournament. He's like, actually, all that happens is Sinner still goes through to the final and just batters it.

32:53Charlotte Collins:You get a really crap final. So it's kind of... At least you're seeing like two powerhouses. Yeah. If they were both in it. A shame. Fight to the death. So Ronaldo's reached his sixth World Cup with Portugal. Wow. Which, maths? How does he? 24. God. Well done. Is he still good? Yeah, that's my point. Probably no. In relation to his best, no. but in relation to many others. Yeah, he's just so fiercely determined that he's just always there. It's like, he is that annoying kid at school who will just always take the penalty, always take the free kick. And like, granted, he's pretty good. So he can do that.

33:32But he has that like annoying persistence. And he gets quite stroppy as well.

33:38Charlotte Collins:I like the fact that he's got a wife and sort of seems to have settled down and found a family dynamic that works for him. And he kind of has such a playboy reputation. It's quite cool that he... There's probably no one left. And they met in what? He's done. And I met in store, was it? She was like an assistant. Is that right? Yeah, yeah. I heard that about Pep Guardiola as well. That's how he met his wife. Yeah, yeah. Was it at store? She was just like a standard. Is that how they met? Yeah. Like when he went into store? Wow. Right. Get me a job. Yeah. Yeah. Off to MS. Yeah. Good for her. She's quite a wholesome character.

34:10That's nice. And like obviously didn't come from a wealthy family and was still like working loads when they met and then he was taking her out for these really extravagant dinners which would be going to work the next day and she's very family oriented. It's quite sweet.

34:23Charlotte Collins:That would make a nice movie. Yeah, I love that. It's like Colleen. It's what? Like Colleen Rooney. Well, that's a bit different though because they were both, no, I know, but as in like just normal girls. Yeah. And she's, she still feels normal. Those are two very different films, I feel like. The movie film. Yeah. I saw post. There's not much glam. I'm pretty British. Because I think these, like, you know, a professional sportsman in super stressful roles, you want to end up with the girl who's family orientated, who's a nice girl, who's gonna look after you and love you for you. I mean, I'm sure the money helps, but that's who you sort of, you need, I think, to be the best in your game.

35:06It's also, you can have all the money in the world,

35:09Charlotte Collins:but if you want a family dynamic where like somebody is around for your children, it's really hard to be like an elite sportsman and then have a wife who has her own career that thrives as well so when you think about I don't know off the top of my head when I think about the major tennis players or the football they don't have wives whose careers come first obviously because it's just not possible unless you're not going to have a family and you're not going to see each other can we talk about the Strictly hosts really quickly because I feel like that is the big chat that was the chat in the office yesterday no Ryland no Ryland I was campaigning for Ryland yeah he's fun Ryland shame I'm not entertaining Yeah.

35:42Charlotte Collins:I'm enthused by the choice. So it was announced yesterday that the new host of Strictly Come Dancing will be Josh Widdicombe, the comedian, Emma Willis, TV presenter, and also Johannes, who is one of the professional dancers on Strictly. They're all lovely. Lovely. So vanilla. Also, I like the last leg, so is he not going to do the last leg anymore, would be my question. Cause that's, it feels like a schedule conflict. Maybe a bit, that sounds really harsh, doesn't it? So easy to critique people, but maybe a bit one-paced in their styles. Agreed. You know what you're getting. Every show might get a bit monotonous.

36:15Maybe it won't be, but... So you want someone who's unpredictable? Yeah, or different layers to their personality, whether they're funny but also serious and also good host presenters, a few more layers to how they host, I guess, rather than having their act that has been slotted into a panel.

36:31Charlotte Collins:I feel they're a weird... Combo. Yeah, I can't feel the vibe. I also think that there are... We have talent in the UK who are fun enough to be different, but still professional. So my dream combo would have been Ryland and Rob Rinder because they are both absolute pros. They already make TV shows together for the BBC. Like what fun, so camp, so strictly, and like a breath of fresh life. Whereas this doesn't feel fresh to me. It feels like sort of 2.0. And who's doing what? Yeah, where's Johannes? Who's Claudia and who's Tess? Yeah. Surely. Yeah, because it is such a camp show. Like, it needs that energy.

37:10Like, who's the grown-up talking to the judges?

37:12Charlotte Collins:Is that Emma? Must be. But then Josh talking to the talent, maybe. I also would have loved to see Jamie Lang in there. I think he would have done an amazing job. I'd love to see him as Claudia. He's so personable and he's got the chat. And emotional. Yeah, I didn't see Josh Whittacombe doing that. No. Look. Interesting. Good luck to them. Good luck to them. Because there's big shoes to fill. The panel has spoken. Yeah, that's our view for what it's worth. Yeah. For what it's worth.

37:38Charlotte Collins:Okay, hot topic. Harvey, you've got your own personal dilemma. Oh, interesting. It's not actually as juicy as that sounds. Sorry. It's not juicy. It's quite boring. I'm going to a wedding in Tuscany this summer, and it's black tie optional on the... That is a shitty... Optional is not good. Yeah. Boys go up. Yeah, so I've got the choice of, like, incredible black tie photo, with the vineyards rolling behind me, obviously. But it's gonna be too hot for the day. So do I like suck it up for the photo or actually wear something appropriate for the weather? I need to dig out this Instagram account, which is the perfect, and he literally just did a video.

38:25He basically takes the same suits and was doing the same suit for a suit. Like maybe he said like business, and then he goes wedding. and he hasn't changed the suit and he did a black tie one where he added a waistband and a bow tie but had a day version as well without the waistband and the bow tie that would be so cool if you did the day and then went and added like two or three things I like that idea

38:48Charlotte Collins:so what take a camber band take a bow tie but then are you just in the day wearing a black tie suit with studs and stuff without I'm going to have to find it I don't think it was as simple as that yeah black tie optional is bullshit because sorry to your friends but that means that you're going to have it's too hard You're going to have a real mix for your photos as well. People are going to be all over the place. And if you're not doing black tie, what are you doing? They haven't given any guidance on that. Why don't you... You need to speak to an Italian. Oh, that's a good shout. Yeah. And find out if there's etiquette.

39:18Where do you find an Italian? Italian wedding etiquette and or any tips because it's clearly quite hot. That's good advice. Find a local. If there's any Italians, watch it.

39:27Charlotte Collins:Yeah. Love that. I don't know how to open this, but for context, I feel like currently I've had more people than ever stop me in the street which would be a combination of race day doing really well working here and content from here and I suppose putting a bit of time into my own brand as well people always stop and talk about ties and there's something really nice about the way that people will interact with me maybe it's a guy thing but they're like just come over shake my hand say love what you do or the black hey it's is it frankly yeah just give me a handshake say like oh love what you do and then move on and it's been nice for me because being a guy that creates content even though i've done it for 10 years still is a weird thing like it still cringes me out a bit and it's quite nice to i suppose be reassured that guys are watching it and it's not just this world that exists for fashion and girls and social media and all that.

40:24So, yeah, I feel maybe like, maybe a slight change in how men interact with content or people are getting more used to guys being online and it not being so strange. I don't know if that's just how I feel about it, but I've noticed it anyway.

40:38Charlotte Collins:I'd like to think that with SL Man, we are debunking it a little bit or making it that way because I think up until you guys were creating content on our platform, there are very few examples of people doing it who aren't just doing it on their own platforms and you know that can feel a bit embarrassing or it can feel a bit self-promotional whereas what we do legitimizes the content because you're not doing it one's not doing it for their own gain so it feels a bit more sort of um validated and there's a point to it and it's a business and you've got that backing and so i think perhaps you guys doing that has helped it feel a bit more mainstream yeah on our end and then it's nice to know that you know guys are because a lot of it's either horse racing or fashion and people are consuming it you know it's i think probably you have the same questions as a guy you sort of wonder like what what am i putting out there is it oh yeah and but when people are saying oh like it's great clearly watch it and use it and it's useful so because you come across really nicely in content but i think people will feel like they can approach yeah i guess yeah and you've always said that right that kind of people always make jokes when they're with me like someone at what past be like hey Frankie and they're like do you know I'm like no they're like just because they feel like they know me yeah yeah so it's not in a weird sort of uneasy way it's as if I'm mates with them most people that I speak to go I love SL man my boyfriend loves Frankie like I get that and obviously Harvey as well but they all know you from the I just get that a lot yeah because the racing yeah so well done you well done guys we're gonna end with a men versus women debate Oh, I love.

42:09Charlotte Collins:Who should make the first move? Men. Men. You just feel it. Okay. I actually agree with that. Yeah, kind of, to be fair. Yeah, you can make the first move as a girl. If you see someone you like, go for it. Depends what the move is. Is the move saying hi, or is the move, like, messing? Yeah, like, going in for the kiss. I was thinking kissing, yeah. All men. Oh, really? Yeah, otherwise, I feel it's a weird power play. Yeah, man. For the rest of your relationship. And quite humbling to have to do that. First kiss, guys. Yeah, 100%. Is chivalry dead or just outdated? Yeah, it depends. Not dead. Good answer, Harvey.

42:43Good content. I think the, like, men should always open a door and, like, pull a chair out. Outdated. Disagree. No, I think it's dead, not outdated. I think it's patronising to assume that a female couldn't open a door for herself.

42:59Charlotte Collins:No, honey, that is wrong. Women. Are dating apps better for men or women? just tragical round no I don't know I've never been I'm hopefully women because isn't is it bumble or hinge what were you the women messages first yeah define better better I agree safer women probably have a worse experience on there through like the things that they receive etc but have more options no doubt but yeah men probably get rejected more yeah but you're right yeah but you can't have one with the other right can't have more attention without a few weirdos in there yeah it's like a rule of averages yeah gotta kiss a lot of frogs should couples share finances yes i think if you're married yeah join an account like a split account i think it's really useful i think you should have a like a team talk to set the yeah so everyone could do it differently but there needs to be a point when you talk about all finances even if it doesn't mean you pull all of them together you still are transparent about everything yeah and then you make a plan going forward yeah we've learned that men can just up and leave so we learned it from a book by the way not from life experience it turns out the men can just leave what who knew we read we're reading this well hodge finished it we talked about it on our podcast last week there's a book called strangers by um bellbird yeah her name is bellbird and she and it's got you know gwyneth paltry's playing her in the film it's just it evolved very quickly but she based her husband literally just like switched overnight like perfect life lovely and then he was suddenly like no don't want this bye and she basically was so she didn't realise how submissive she was in the marriage had no handle on any finance situation and I was laughing because I'm sort of like you know I'm like oh James you'll deal with it and if he could throw me off a cliff and no we controversially have completely separate finances like total transparency but we've got like one shared account that about 200 quid goes into a month for like various things but do you not have a joint savings?

44:54Charlotte Collins:no it's separate we have it's not joint it's like you know we've got ISAs under both of our names like the same pot the same amount goes into both pots but no it's not all joint like I could get out personal question but what if you go on holiday would you like I feel like everything's a discussion so it sort of depends who's feeling more liquid at the time you know it might be that I'm like I'll get that you know those flights or he'll get that hotel or then if we're away you know we tend to pay I don't know maybe a night out eat a dinner eat probably yeah it's actually unbelievably liberating to not have to ask for those things and to be able to contribute.

45:32Charlotte Collins:I mean, I don't ask. You tell. You demand. You just buy it. Yeah. Exactly. You just buy it. You mean with his money? With our money. With our money. But it's in, my mum was always like, don't spend all of James' money. I'm like, mum, it's my money as well. I was having this conversation with some of the girls yesterday. We were talking about an influencer who had split up with her partner supposedly because he refused to sign a prenup. And we were all like, fair enough. like from her I mean like why won't you sign a prenup I don't know I feel quite realistic I know aren't prenups a lot less negative than what they sound in the sense that a prenup is simply a conversation that you've both agreed on to it's not like there's a set rule you create your own prenup totally is it legal in the UK I feel like they're not actually legally binding so I think you shouldn't break up with someone because they want a prenup but you might come you might butt heads if the conversation about what you both want is different within the prenup.

46:32That's fair. Which is... And expectations, I think. But simply saying, I want a prenup, it's like, well, what do you want it for? Let's talk about it.

46:40Charlotte Collins:But some people do think that that is unromantic or, you know, killing the idea that you might be fit for that. I think that's a red flag. Because it masks a lot of potential. Yeah, like a lot of drama and trouble in the future. Yeah. I think it should be a respect thing. Is that our generation that we're a bit more like, like aware that it might not be forever? Maybe. I think if you do it right being transparent will make you closer if you're going to marry somebody you should be able to be that honest don't bother getting married if you can't can you stay friends with an ex? no tricky I'm not friends with my ex but I think you can I think it does get tricky when you have a new partner I think you can stay friends with your ex from a personal perspective if you're single but the moment you get with someone else it's just unfair It makes it complicated as well.

47:30Charlotte Collins:Yeah. Do you think women are actually better listeners? No. No. I don't think so. Maybe same genders listen better to each other. Oh yeah, maybe. My guy friends are great listeners. Maybe I'm just lucky with good friends. I think some men don't listen to women. Obviously some girls are great. I think it's something about, you have to get the person to really listen to them. And potentially a lot of things you want to talk about, the same sex will get you better. Like I feel like guys hear me more. but probably because we're talking about guy things. Do you feel more understood by men? I think so.

48:02But then occasionally, you know, a girl would really get you in a conversation that might sort of make you cry or like get to you. They're probably better at going deep.

48:11Charlotte Collins:Javi? Yeah, I think it's that same sex thing that I think you're just on similar wavelengths on certain things and then that opens up other conversations. This week’s episode is a special one – the very first crossover between the SheerLuxe Podcast and the SLMan Podcast. Hosted by Charlotte Collins, she’s joined by Frankie, Hodge and Harvey for a wide-ranging conversation covering everything from the TV shows, books and fashion finds they’re obsessed with right now to the big debates dividing men and women.

From ‘Rivals’, ‘Money Heist’ and ‘Amandaland’ to Carlos Alcaraz, Cristiano Ronaldo and the reality of dating professional sportsmen, no topic is off limits. The team also gets into summer style dilemmas, wedding dress codes, sock hierarchies, flip-flops for men, the sexiest thing to sleep in and whether trainers are officially over.

Plus, they tackle the ultimate relationship debates: is chivalry dead, should couples share finances, can you stay friends with an ex and who really knows how to stack a dishwasher properly?

Subscribe for more episodes every week and don’t forget to check out the SLMan Podcast wherever you get your podcasts.
