1:23Sid Lowe:Hello everyone and welcome to this week's preview pod from TSAP, the Spanish Football Podcast. I'm Phil Kittramilli. The Sidlow is with me to look ahead to match day 23 in La Liga EA Sports and see what's coming up this weekend. Hello, Sidney.
1:37Phil Kitromilides:Hello, Philip.
1:38Sid Lowe:You all right?
1:39Phil Kitromilides:Yeah, not too bad. It's pissing down the rain and I'm disappointed to learn that you didn't play football in the rain. I did play football.
1:45Sid Lowe:I mean, I couldn't help that it wasn't raining, you know.
1:48Phil Kitromilides:I know, but I mean, I was going to say, I bet you're gutted. You're probably not. I'd be gutted to miss a game of football in the rain.
1:54Sid Lowe:It's much better in the rain. I never want to be in the rain in any context of my life ever not even when there's a drought
2:04Phil Kitromilides:and you're desperate for a drink and you're in the middle of the desert I think you might want the rain then
2:09Sid Lowe:that would be the only context
2:10Phil Kitromilides:which song is it I miss you like the desert miss the rain which song is that
2:15Sid Lowe:everything but the girl yes right we're not here to talk about obscure are we not Oh, come on.
2:23Phil Kitromilides:We are here to talk about Spanish football, Sid. Well, I mean business. I'm putting my glasses on so I can see all the glorious information we've got.
2:30Sid Lowe:Yes. You actually look sort of quite fresh-faced today. You look usually...
2:34Phil Kitromilides:You know what? This is what they said to me yesterday.
2:36Sid Lowe:Bedraggled and disheveled and impeached.
2:37Phil Kitromilides:This is what they said to me yesterday on the telly. They said, oh, you're looking very, very... I think it's because I had a haircut. Yeah. What a little hair I've got. Yeah. And a shave. A little bit more of a shave than normal as well. But, you know... Yeah.
2:51Sid Lowe:Is that a good thing? You're looking great, babes. You're looking fantastic, mate. Right. Let's start off then by taking you through the matches. It all kicks off this evening in Vigo. I'm sure it's going to be absolutely pissing with Raid for Celta against Osasuna. Then tomorrow, it's the TSFP Derby in Vallecas. It's Rio against Oviedo. It is a huge game for both sides.
3:13Phil Kitromilides:Massive, yeah.
3:14Sid Lowe:This week's TSFP Diary for patrons is going to be on that game. I am scared and excited for that particular one.
3:22Phil Kitromilides:Yeah, I think I'd probably feel the same way. What happens when we start fighting with each other? I mean, there's quite a lot of tension in this game. You know, it's going to go wrong. This could be like the beginning of the end. I mean, imagine that if there's a riot at Vallecas and they kind of trace it back and they realise it started with two podcasters. Yeah.
3:45Sid Lowe:Well, you just need to calm down because you will be sitting in the away end, all right? Right next to me. Yeah. In the home end, brother. There's quite a lot of us there.
3:53Phil Kitromilides:Yeah, it's not really an end, is it?
3:54Sid Lowe:Yeah, you'll be sitting with the home fans. So, you know, calm and respectful. Oh, I know that. Yeah, yeah, I know that. Don't be a dick. Barcelona against New Yorker. Yes. Immediately after that, Sevilla against Girona and the Saturday night game, which you and me are both commentating. See, this actually should be a good one. Real Sociedad against Elche. Then it's Alaves against Getafe. Athletic, Club de Bilbao hosting Levante. Atletico Madrid against Betis. They're playing again. Yeah. I didn't realise that. I did not realise that. They're playing against Betis. They played them last night in the Cup 1-5-0 and they played them at home this weekend.
4:31Sid Lowe:And then immediately after that, it's Valencia against Real Madrid. Woof! At Mestalla, Sunday night football. And the Monday night game is Villarreal against Espanyol. All right, Sydney, let's start with Celta Vigo against Osasuna.
4:47Phil Kitromilides:So I think this feels like a home win. I think we're in a slightly strange position in the seventh against ninth. But I think Alessio Lissi was right about this. He was talking about this. He said, look, it looks like we're a long way up the table. But as we've kept talking about the compression from basically everyone below, well, sort of Celta, I suppose, everyone below Celta all the way down to relegation zone, they're all really close together. Celta's form's, I'm not going to say it's gone off a cliff a bit, but it has a little bit because it was five wins and a draw in the previous six they've now had that nil-nil with Getafe which was really awful you were telling me when you were doing that game I don't want to talk about it it was really really bad they also lost 3-1 at Real Sotirad who of course are massively improving but I still feel like at home this is a home win for Celta
5:38Sid Lowe:I think they've only won three times at home all season their away form has been much better than their home Asuna's away form is terrible Only one win away all season and that came in by us, unfortunately.
5:49Phil Kitromilides:So, yes.
5:49Sid Lowe:Okay, so you're going for a home win, yeah?
5:51Phil Kitromilides:I am. With a little bit of doubt, but a home win.
5:54Sid Lowe:Last week you got seven out of ten, which is pretty good.
5:57Phil Kitromilides:Yeah, I was on an amazing run as well because I got the first two wrong. I was six in a row at one point. I was like, this is incredible. And, of course, one of the ones I got wrong, I was delighted to get wrong because I had Oviedo down as a draw and they actually won.
6:10Sid Lowe:They did, unexpectedly. Leading us to, Raya against Oviedo on Saturday. Is it just going to be nil and nil, Sid?
6:17Phil Kitromilides:Yeah, I was thinking that. I also feel, I think, you know, let's tell us not to start that riot. Maybe nil and nil is not a bad thing. Oviedo, one win in 14, which was last week. Raya only one win in 12, which was Mallorca, wasn't it? I think, if I remember rightly. It's a long time ago. Yeah. Although it's not that long ago, actually, because it's at the back end of that run of 12 games. I think, honestly, Rayo Vallecano are a significantly better side than Real Oviedo. But they just don't score enough goals.
6:48Sid Lowe:Everyone is a significantly better side than Oviedo. But, you know, you're a difficult team to break down.
6:53Phil Kitromilides:I think there's a handful of teams who are not significantly better than us, actually. All right. But yes, everyone is better than us. I don't know how many are significantly better than us. I think this is a home win.
7:07Sid Lowe:You're doing the reverse jinx. I don't like it. No, no.
7:10Phil Kitromilides:No, because I feel like nil-nil is the obvious thing to say. I just think this is a home win, yeah. But it could be a draw.
7:21Sid Lowe:Okay. Dios te oiga, my friend.

7:24Phil Kitromilides:God always listens to me, Philip.
7:26Sid Lowe:Yes, he does. He can't stop listening to me.
7:28Phil Kitromilides:He doesn't always give me what I ask him. No. But he listens and then he says, nah, fuck off.
7:35Sid Lowe:Barcelona, Ricketts, Mallorca at the Camp Nou. this looks like an absolute nailed on home win. Is there any reason why it won't be?
7:46Phil Kitromilides:I can't think of a good reason why. I mean, I was going to throw the midweek Copa del Rey games at you, but I don't think so. Even if Barcelona get their midweek Copa del Rey game and it's away and it's on a Tuesday and that will put some of the focus on that. I think the Copa del Rey games will probably be Wednesday and Thursday, but they might do one of them on Tuesday. day. No, I can't think of a good reason for this, except just, you know, football and shit happens. But no, home win.
8:13Sid Lowe:We're looking for a little bit more than football and shit happens. This is a
8:16Phil Kitromilides:highly respected, it's a highly respected analytical. Okay. Mallorca have just come from a from a 4-1 win in which they actually did play pretty well. Here's one of the reasons why it might not happen. Because we've seen the teams and I don't want to labour the point, but we've laboured it. My goodness, we've laboured it this year. We've had it out in this fields, toiling the soil and blah, blah, blah. But, you know, we keep talking about that defensive high line. Actually, funny enough, I think if there's a team that's not built to take advantage of Barcelona's defensive high line, it's Mallorca.
8:47Phil Kitromilides:They aren't a team that go through you, really. They're a team that come from the side of you. Now, that's not to say that Barcelona don't have their vulnerabilities in the air. I think they do a little bit. And the way Maurici is playing this year and the number of goals he's getting, I think you've got to take them seriously. But this feels like a home win to me. even without Pedri, by the way. You know, this would be, will it be now the fifth game without Pedri? They've won them all so far with a whole load of different midfield combinations. But I still think they're too strong for New Yorker.
9:16Sid Lowe:I mean, they've won every game since the Clásico in October in every competition, apart from the defeat at Real Sociedad. Yeah, which is a complete freak. 8-2. They've won every game at home this season. there have been some of those games where they haven't overly convinced and they've just got it over the line obviously against Oviedo last time it was nil-nil at halftime and you know not brilliant in the first half there against Alaves they won 3-1 but Alaves scored first and Alaves were really pushing towards the last 10 minutes and then they scored at a breakaway against Girona they won 2-1 with an injury time winner but Girona could have scored four in the first half.
9:59Sid Lowe:Even Elche created chances against them. Elche created chances against them. Real Sociedad scored first against them as well and lost 2-1. The record is good, but they have given teams chances at Camp Nou and Monjeek this season. It's just that they've got this unbelievable amount of firepower and woof.
10:18Phil Kitromilides:Yeah, exactly.
10:19Sid Lowe:Going back to the deep analysis, they've got firepower, woof. here we go.
10:26Phil Kitromilides:Well, I mean, and I actually think that is part of the analysis because obviously Barcelona are a team that have an idea and they play in a particular way. And so you can't just say they have good players, which is what we tend to say about Real Madrid, partly because with Real Madrid, we don't see the idea and the structure, but we see good players. But Barcelona have a lot of good players. And I think the variety and, you know, I guess the best indication of that is other figures of Marcus Rashford. His contribution is huge for a guy that's not really a starter. In fact, not at all a starter, really and truly.
10:56Phil Kitromilides:I mean, he's started a handful of games, but he gets a lot of good minutes. He gets lots of opportunities and he takes them.
11:03Sid Lowe:Shall we have a quick word about Laminia Mau and his form? And that is a reason to think that Barcelona can wipe the floor with Mallorca, because I think he might be playing, you know, better than ever. We talked about this on the bonus podcast after the Copa del Rey, and he scored in four consecutive games and he just seems more intelligent, more mature. He's got a bit more pause to his game. He seems to be taking the right decisions. And that isn't actually something new, because I remember when he burst onto the scene, Xavi Hernandez, one of the first things he said about him, he always makes the right decision.
11:34Sid Lowe:He always knows what to do. We did see him, perhaps, you know, last season, he was taking on shots from a certain amount of distance. Stats, by the way, he's averaging the same number of shots as he was last season. So it's not like he's shooting less, although it feels like he's shooting less and playing more passes. Maybe just the shots that he's taking on are more intelligent, more well-placed shots.
11:54Phil Kitromilides:Maybe he's having more of the ball as well. So, you know, the same number of passes, but in, let's say, just, you know, to fry another out there for the sake of it. Sorry, the same number of shots, but from a player who's getting the ball, say, for argument's sake, 30 % more of the time, obviously proportionally it's fewer shots. And so maybe it feels like that because actually so much more is going through him. I actually don't know if the stats bear that out. I don't know if more is going through him this year. but it does feel like he's taking a responsibility. He wants the ball to him. He's calling for it early.
12:21Phil Kitromilides:He's picking it up in deep positions and also in high positions. I'd actually, this is a stat that I don't have to hand, but I'd quite like to have a look at this and have a look at the touches and the amount of involvement that Luminiumal is having because it feels very, very high indeed. Okay.
12:40Sid Lowe:Watch out for Jan Virgili, by the way, for Mallorca. He's a very interesting player, obviously signed from Barcelona. this summer from the Youth Academy. He's made a place in this starting XI for Mallorca. I saw him and seen him in the flesh a couple of weeks ago in that defeat against Rayo. And he's very quick, he's very skillful, and he is an exciting player.
13:01Phil Kitromilides:It feels a little bit like it took a little bit of a while for them to find a way to integrate him, didn't it? Yes. But I think they have now. I think in a way he's a bit counter-cultural when you're talking about a manager like Arasati. Because I think Arasati would rather get the ball wide and get the ball in the box. And that's a different approach from your either creative midfielder and or wide player.
13:24Sid Lowe:Sevilla against Girona is a massive game at the Estadio Ramon Sanchez-Picuan. Both teams coming off defeats last week. Sevilla obviously got thrashed at Mallorca and are in all sorts of trouble. Girona remained just three points above the relegation zone despite having a decent run. What are we thinking here?
13:47Phil Kitromilides:I've started to wonder about Sevilla, whether we've allowed ourselves to believe that in terms of the basic raw materials they've got, that they are better than they really are. Because there's one or two names in there, not very many, but one or two names in there because it's Sevilla, because there's a sense of, you know, well, somewhere along the line they'll get it right, but they're really not very good. And yet I do think, I think, I think there's an awareness or there's an acceptance that they're not very good because they have problems. It was interesting to listen to Cordon, the sporting director this week, talking about how you look at the winter window.
14:24Phil Kitromilides:Essentially, what were we supposed to do? You're asking him to go into a window with no money. With no money. Not just not much. No money. And, you know, Aquar Adams is a very good player. I think they've got... Well, okay. Let me rephrase that. He's a very good player. If you're a team that's struggling down the bottom of the table, if I'm Oviedo for example I want him because I think he'll score me 7, 8, 9 goals but there isn't very much in that team, you go through it and you think this is severe, there aren't that many good players in this team there really aren't and I think they're genuinely in trouble I still think they don't lose this though in fact I think they win this no it's a draw, home draw what am I talking about?
15:13Sid Lowe:Draw. Draw. Let's see if we see Fran Beltran and Echeverry in the starting XI, the new signings for Girona. We're not going to see Ter Stegen. God, what a disaster.
15:25Phil Kitromilides:No, I mean, it's amazing. Last week, one of the things we said was, oh, and Girona have bought the one thing they really didn't have. And now they've lost him again because Ter Stegen is injured. He actually put out a message on social media this week saying, you know, I'm having a really hard time with this. Well, you would, to be honest. Yes, but I'm surprised he said so publicly. you know i'm i'm i'm struggling with this i've always been positive this has really hit me quite hard um and i kind of hope that that softens a little bit some of the dickheads who've laid into terstek and repeatedly over the last what would you say three years two years three years i mean it won't suit social media no i'm afraid it probably won't um okay so we're going for a

17:32Sid Lowe:Get a$75 sponsored job credit at indeed.com slash podcast. Terms and conditions apply. What about Real Sociedad Elche? That's the game that we're commentating, Sid. I'm looking forward to this. Elche, the only team in La Liga without an away win. Real Sociedad unbeaten in their last seven games since Rino Matarazzo took over. The change with Real Sociedad has been quite clear to see. And I was speaking to someone who works closely with one of the Real Sociedad. players and I was asking him, you know, what's the change been all about? And he said, you know, I think it's the change that you can see really.
18:08Sid Lowe:He wanted them. He came in and he said, you know, we're too flat as a team. There's nothing about us. We want more people wanting to get on the ball, coming inside. I want more runs from deep. I want more aggression. And I think we've seen all of that. They are an aggressive team. They are the team with the most fouls. They are the team with the most tackles in La Liga. And they're going to be flying into this Elche side, Sid. Yeah, I mean, and you say, I think there obviously needs to be a slight caveat here,
18:38Phil Kitromilides:which is to say that the team with the most fouls, that cannot be explained alone by the manager who's only been in charge for seven games.
18:47Sid Lowe:No, they were the team with the most fouls before.
18:49Phil Kitromilides:Exactly, exactly. So not least because those seven games, actually only five of them are in the league. But I do think that we're seeing an aggressiveness and an intensity about them. I think we're seeing a looseness about them as well, a freedom to go at people, to try things, to be prepared, to run at people. You look at the performances of Gonzalo Gérez and Oya Thabal since he took over. I think we're seeing something really, really significant there, a willingness to plan the counter-attack, an ability to respond. I mean, you go through the games, for example, they scored two goals at 1-1 and a man down against Celta.
19:26Phil Kitromilides:they, Barcelona score the equaliser against them. And at that point, you think that's it, it's done, Barcelona win. And within a minute, Geddes has scored again. Now, I don't want to overplay this because really and truly, it was a long ball, really badly defended, bounces down, gets back into the box, Geddes scores. It's a bit out of nowhere, but there's a reaction. Against Getafe, Getafe, I thought had done the classic Getafe, almost nothing all game, get an equaliser in what I think it was a 92nd minute. And then Real Sociedad go and score in the 96th or 5th or whatever it was. you know against Osasuna they're losing in the Copa del Rey 2-0 wasn't it I think 2-0 at home they're losing in the Copa del Rey and they win that on penalties you know against Alaves they they have to come back after going 1-0 down so you're seeing you're seeing a team that's got a personality a character and maybe actually in a way going down has almost been good for them because it's forced them to do that but there's no doubts now you've got to go and do this you've got to go at these teams and and I think that that mentally they're in a far, far better place.
20:22Phil Kitromilides:I was so struck by this. And apologies, because I think I might have said it at the time. I was at the Barcelona game and talking to Real Softelab players in the flash zone afterwards. And it was really striking to me that what they were saying about the change, not just what they were saying, but the way they were saying it. Because the way they were saying it up to a point, I think you could suggest, is the kind of thing that players don't want to say when a new manager comes in because effectively they were saying look how much better it is and normally players are really careful not to say the last guy was was was an idiot well the last guy didn't have us going and it was really clear that he had he had found an empathy with them a way of connecting with them and a way of basically getting a reaction from them which just wasn't happening with Sergio Francisco so home win yeah yeah I think so and and Elche you know just to put this in context with Elche.
21:16Phil Kitromilides:Elche, I think it's going to be very, very interesting to watch what happens with Elche now because they play really well all year. We've all said they're playing well, rightly so. I think they've had a lot of, what's the word? Plaudits. A lot of people saying, what a good team they are. They've come up in the second division. They take people on. They want the ball. They're brave. And we love this. And we had Frankie de Jong a couple of weeks ago saying football's more fun when teams do this. Well, it is for you because you've just beaten them. It's for you. Yeah. It's easier. Yeah. And this is this leads me to, if you like, almost a philosophical question, which is let's take Frankie's comments.
21:50At what point does a compliment become a criticism?
21:55Phil Kitromilides:At what point do all the people who think this is great and rightly so, by the way, and I am one of them, start thinking, hang on a minute. And at what point to use to use a lovely line that Juan Malia once used, they kill you with compliments. and I wonder if there is a point at which people will say, hang on, it's all well and good being committed to this, but results are slipping away from us and then what happens to that commitment to an identity if you continue to fail to get results, even if you deserve more. So a home win to Real Sociedad. Home win to Real Sociedad and beyond this game, what happens with Elche?
22:31Phil Kitromilides:I think it's very interesting to see how that plays out.
22:35Sid Lowe:Alaves against Catafes, the early game on Sunday. Alaves, who in good form in the league, had a big win at the RCDE Stadium last week, although they did have that disappointing midweek cup exit against Real Sociedad, against a Getafe side, who have bought a load of players in January, trying to fit them into the team. I mean, I'm going to, you know, don't think it's going to be a classic this. Let's see.
22:59Phil Kitromilides:I think it probably isn't. Getafe, I think it's eight games without a win now for them.
23:06Sid Lowe:Do I say that about every Getafe game? I might do, you know. I might do. You might do, but you know what? You know what? It doesn't make you wrong.
23:14Phil Kitromilides:If you're always saying the same thing, it's because you're pretty sure about it. And for the most part, you're right.
23:20Sid Lowe:I'm still traumatised by that game against Celta Vigo last week. Yeah,
23:26Phil Kitromilides:it was really quite bad. And obviously, as you know, because I go to a lot of Getafe games, I've been at a lot of Getafe games this year, and I thought, oof. It's one of the things, actually, that was so interesting about Raul Sotavar against Getafe is they were prepared to play Getafe. at their own game. And Espanyol did that as well. It's like, all right, you want a Getafe? We're going to Getafe. I think this is a home win.
23:47Sid Lowe:Okay. Atletic Clube de Bilbao against Levante. Massive game for Atletic. They need to move away from the relegation zone. There's only three points between them and the bottom three. There are a number of teams between them and the bottom three, but the talking Bilbao is there. Of their proximity to the drop zone, this is a big, big, big chance for them to pick up three points at home to Levante.
24:08Phil Kitromilides:Yeah, and if you are to look at Athletic and you want to look at them as a team that's fighting against relegation, and obviously the way that you look at where a team is and what you believe their aims are, and at the moment their aims have to be to survive, then it changes the way that you look at their fixture list. Because you look at their fixture list right now, this is the next four games for them. Levante, Oviedo, Elche, Rayo. Now, under normal circumstances, Athletic, you think, oh, they could win all four of those. Now you're looking at this and thinking, oh they have to win all four of those but of course that obligation is a real opportunity for them because if they were to win not necessarily all four but two of the four with a draw and maybe one defeat or something like that that would actually go a very long way to put in gap between them and the other teams i still think they're better than the immense majority of the teams below them in fact here's here's one for you to try and give you an example of how much better they are um yesterday as is as is very much the way uh he he does things my son said to me okay hey, so if you could do a La Liga team, but you're not allowed anyone who's playing for any of the teams in the top half of the table, what would that La Liga team be?
25:11Phil Kitromilides:It was actually quite a fun little exercise. And it occurred to me, I was putting quite a lot of athletic players in there. The goalkeeper, both centre-backs, the two Williams brothers. There was lots of them in there.
25:24Sid Lowe:I mean, they're the best team in the bottom half, of course.
25:26Phil Kitromilides:I mean, they should be, yeah. And lots and lots of good players. The one big, big, obviously screaming caveat here is, however much Ernesto Valverde keeps saying the league is our thing, the league is our thing, the league is our thing. He said it about the Champions League. He said it about the Copa de Re. They will have a Copa de Re semi-final first leg in midweek. And that game will be against Barca or Atletico or a Bastard against Real Sociedad. And I think it's inevitable that some of the focus, if not deliberately, if only at a subconscious level, is on midweek. And Levante are massively improving.
26:01Phil Kitromilides:Only lost one in six, I think, under Luis Castro. I still think home win, though. That was a lot of analysis to just say home win, wasn't it? But I suppose that's what we're here for.
26:11Sid Lowe:It is. Better to just say football, isn't it? Football, isn't it? Atletico Madrid against Betis. Obviously, Atleti last night in the Copa del Rey, winning the quarterfinals at the Cartuja. A 5-0 win. Brilliant, brilliant debut for Adamola Lukman with an assist, a goal, and just generally looking very, very dangerous indeed. Everything about his play was excellent. Yeah, brilliant. Really good. Yeah, really, really liked him. Up against the Bettis side, who, away from home, are terrible. Against a team who spanked them 5-0.
26:45Phil Kitromilides:There's going to be a lot of wordplay around that in Moller, won't there? But just because it's Moller, Moller is like, it's great. We really dig it. This is really cool. There's going to be lots and lots of playing on that. Here's the thing, right? All logic, although it's third against fifth, so these are two very good teams, all logic says home win. Atletico have the best home record in the first division, I believe. Every game's a victory except one draw. No one's got that.
27:10Sid Lowe:Barcelona have won every game at home.
27:12Phil Kitromilides:Have they?
27:12Sid Lowe:They've won every game. I mean, I literally just said that a few minutes ago when we were talking about them, but yes. Yeah, yeah.
27:18Phil Kitromilides:Okay, all right. Second best record at home then. Barcelona lost to Oviedo, didn't they? Wasn't it? Wasn't it?
27:26Sid Lowe:They drew the first half.
27:27Phil Kitromilides:That's good. Yeah, that'll do. There we go. So, yeah, they didn't win the first half of that one. Atletico, everything says home win in this, but let's throw in, A, the Coppola de Rai semifinal midweek, which Betis don't have and Atletico do. Let's throw in the tiredness of some of their players already, although, of course, the newer rivals should help a little bit with that. And shall we just throw in that? You know, we don't want the analysis to just be football in it, but it sometimes feels, doesn't it, that when teams play each other back-to-back in different competitions, you just don't get the same team win them both.
27:57Phil Kitromilides:Or does it just feel like that? Maybe that's not actually true. The stats probably prove that that's not true. I mean, I don't think it feels like that at all. I've never felt that.
28:04Sid Lowe:Have you?
28:05Phil Kitromilides:Okay.
28:05Sid Lowe:No, no, no. I just sort of, in the interest of fairness and transparency, Atletico Madrid have picked up more points at home than any other team. There you go. So they have got the best home record. They've got 31 points and Barcelona have 30 points because Atletico Madrid have played one more game than them. Excellent. And that was the draw. So, yes, that's the real thing.
28:29Phil Kitromilides:So this will explain why, when I was looking at the league table of home performances, Atletico were top of it, despite the fact that... That's why. OK, so anyway, the answer is Atletico, isn't it? Despite all of those things. I think so.
28:42Sid Lowe:As we said, Betis, you know, I was going to say they're unreliable on the road. They're reliable to get a draw. They've got more draws on the road than anyone else by some distance. I think it's seven draws from 11 games away from home. That's pretty extraordinary, that. Yeah, yeah. Ludes. Okay, so we're going for a Atletico victory. What about, Sid, the meeting in Mestaya? I was trying to think of something alliterative to hype it up. Meeting isn't really the thing.
29:11Phil Kitromilides:The mega clash at Mestaya. That's a bit of shit as well, isn't it?
29:15Sid Lowe:It is. Veletra Alba dreams. You just call it a match. It doesn't really need us to hype it up. The match at Mestaya.
29:20Phil Kitromilides:I mean, that alliterates. The match at Mestaya.
29:22Sid Lowe:Yes. It is literally a match at Mestaya, Sid. That is what is going to take place. Sunday evening. Oh, yeah, well, you know, there is a bit of previous in this fixture and it will be hostile and aggressive and loud and full at Mestaya. It's a massive win, a massive game for Valencia, which they really could do with winning. They are in all sorts of trouble out of the cup in midweek. I was going to say they didn't really, you know, it doesn't really affect their season that much going out of the cup. But I think emotionally there was something there. There was something there with the cup which made them feel like, you know, we're big, we're relevant again.
30:00Sid Lowe:And now they're out and they're a point above the relegation zone. They could be in the relegation zone by the time this game takes place against the Real Madrid side, who themselves need to start playing some football, Sid. Yeah.
30:13Phil Kitromilides:Well, the thing is, they don't always need to play some football to win games or to win some games. No, but they need to start playing football to get people on board,
30:24Sid Lowe:I think, to change the momentum and the narrative around this team.
30:28Phil Kitromilides:And I think they need to do so in the next couple of weeks, partly because they've made quite a lot of the narrative of we've got two weeks to work now. And Arbelo didn't really address this. But the question is, you've got two weeks to work. OK, work on what? Do you see this as a physical thing, a structural thing? Now, we've had the physical thing. We've had the story sold and the players, the masks on. And here comes Pindus and all the rest of it. And there's a bit of me that feels that a bit of that is narrative building as much as reality. what we really need to see is some sort of structure.
31:00Phil Kitromilides:And I'm very interested to see what that structure is because with the return of Trent Alexander-Arnold, with the return presumably quite soon of Dani Carvajal, Fedor Balverde goes back into midfield. But does he?
31:14Sid Lowe:Yes, because Jude Bellingham's not there.
31:16Phil Kitromilides:Yeah, okay. That's probably true until Jude Bellingham comes back. And then what's his role? Because I still think, even in midfield, his best role is probably with the freedom to run. And really and truly with the freedom to run to the right-hand side of it. So is midfield going to be structured as Germany with Goula and then Valverde? Is that the three? I suppose it probably is, isn't it?
31:40Sid Lowe:Yeah.
31:41Phil Kitromilides:Is that going to work?
31:43Sid Lowe:Probably not.
31:46Phil Kitromilides:I mean, they're going to win this week. If we were going for a prediction there, I think... Actually, I'm not sure. This does feel like the kind of game that Madrid could possibly not win, doesn't it?
31:55Sid Lowe:At the moment, every game feels like a game that they could possibly not win. Yeah, I suppose so. Yeah. Well, given what we've seen, given what we've literally witnessed with our own eyes, how they weren't very good against Levante, they definitely weren't very good against Rayo.
32:08Phil Kitromilides:No, no, but let's... That's true. But we go at the table and they're only one point behind Barcelona. So this is what I mean. There's a difference between the analysis of what they are and how they're playing and do they win games. But I'm talking about feelings. and like... Exactly. But in terms of what happens this weekend, they find, they seem to keep winning. So this goes back to what you were saying. They need to start playing some football. This is part of the, I suppose in a way, this is actually part of their problem is that they haven't always need to play football. So maybe the pressing urgency to do so isn't there because they keep winning.
32:39Phil Kitromilides:Are you punching the table, Sid? I sort of was. I was kind of, yeah, I was kind of...
32:45Sid Lowe:Yeah, don't do that. The microphone picks it up and it's...
32:47Phil Kitromilides:It's very loud.
32:49Sid Lowe:Yes, please don't do that. We're trying to maintain some sort of semblance of professionalism on this podcast. So we've gone for an away win? Yeah. Yeah.
33:00Phil Kitromilides:But not with very much conviction.
33:03Sid Lowe:Okay. Finally, dear listener, on this journey through the prospective results of the weekend, we come to Monday night and we come to Villarreal against Espanol, La Ceramica, Villarreal. We have started the year badly. Espanol have started it even worse so
33:23Phil Kitromilides:I actually, on the face of this this is semi-obvious and it's a Villarreal home win but I don't feel like it is that obvious
33:33Phil Kitromilides:that said, obviously Espanol's best player this season potentially is their left back who can't play because he's from Villarreal
33:41Sid Lowe:I'm going for a home win I would go for a home win as well form table of the last five games, Espanol are bottom one point from five
33:51Phil Kitromilides:and presumably Villarreal are not a million miles off them because they've gone free without a win haven't they? Mind you they've probably got six points
33:58Sid Lowe:they've got seven points which isn't amazing for a team in the Champions League spots but yeah they're better than Espanyol so we've gone for a home win there, I tend to agree alright that's what's coming up this weekend in La Liga EA Sports on Match Day 23 we'll be watching and enjoying, I hope you guys will as well.
