1:26Sid Lowe:Hi everybody, welcome to this week's GSFP Weekend Preview. It's me, Alex Kirkland, with Sid Lowe this morning. Hello, Sid. Good morning, Alex. How are you feeling about matchday 38 in La Liga? I'm feeling quite nervous. Well, I'm sure, like many, a lot could happen. A lot could happen this weekend. We'll get into it, predicting, as always, every single result. Last week, Sid, you got five out of ten. That doesn't seem very good. It's like, I mean, it's been worse. It could also be better.
1:56Alex Kirkland:Well, it just feels like last weekend was a weekend that should have been relatively easy to predict. I didn't go into it doubting many of those predictions. So what makes me think, what did I get wrong? Oh, I trusted Oviedo to get something, didn't I? That was stupid. No, no, no, you didn't. Did I not? Oh, OK. All right.
2:11Sid Lowe:That was one of the ones that actually went your way. I was going to say, before we get into the predictions, just a reminder that Monday's podcast will be the last, as always the last free to air pods of the season over the summer as always we'll be putting exclusively over at patreon.com forward slash tsfp join us over there and over the summer as you guys long-term listeners will know we bring patrons at least one podcast a week sometimes more when things happen and things inevitably happen also sid after last summer's tsfp daily diary daily diary i should say was such a success during the club world cup i'm bringing it back sit i am watching every single day that i'm at the world cup i will be delivering a diary for the patrons when i go home in the round of 16 it's up to you you can make like will i be taking the baton from
3:04Alex Kirkland:you like i did last well that's the diary baton and the donut it was a donut baton wasn't it donut baton complaining about air conditioning units that make a lot of noise but certainly
3:14Sid Lowe:while I'm there in the States, I'll be diarying every day for patrons. So join us over at patreon.com forward slash TSFP. But like I say, still got the Monday pod to come rounding up matchday 38. Let's get into it, Sid. We've got nine games being played simultaneously on Saturday night, one game being played on Sunday. First up, where are you going to be?
3:35Alex Kirkland:I'm going to be at the, what I think is the biggest of all of them. I'm going to be at Girona.
3:39Sid Lowe:Yeah.
3:39Alex Kirkland:There was a bit of discussion about where I would be. And it looked like I was going to be in Mallorca for Real Oviedo's last game in the first division, which I quite liked. I accepted that it wasn't the big game of the weekend, but I quite liked that. But then, as it turns out, some logistical issues, not involving me, but involving other people, mean that I am now going to be at Girona Elche, which I must say I think is the game anyway. So there we go.
4:01Sid Lowe:Yeah, it's huge. I'll be at the Bernabeu, as always, for Real Madrid against Athletic Club. Just to run you through the fixtures, those nine games being played simultaneously are Alaves against Rayo, Betis against Levante, Celta against Sevilla, Espanyol against L 'Areal, Getafe against Osasuna, as you mentioned, Sid, Mallorca against Oviedo, Real Madrid against Athletic, Valencia against Barca, and then Girona against Elche. And the Sunday game, because there's nothing riding on it, is Villarreal against Athletic. Okay, Sid, let's kick off with, and what we can do, by the way, So we'll predict and then we'll try and work out what our predictions actually mean in terms of the final table.
4:38Sid Lowe:So hang on. Stick around for that. Yeah, I'll be worth it.
4:41Alex Kirkland:You know what? I have this incredibly long. I said this to you and you and Phil, which I thought was very, very kind of.
4:48Sid Lowe:Yeah, Sid is holding up a document to the to the webcam.
4:51Alex Kirkland:Service information. The problem with it was that it's me doing it. And so there's a very, very strong chance that it is wrong. I now have another version which I borrowed from someone else, which I think says the same thing as mine. I really hope it does.
5:05Sid Lowe:OK, let's go through the games then, Sid, and predict them. Starting off with Alaves against Rayo Vallecano.
5:13Alex Kirkland:I don't know what to think of this. Alaves are already safe. Rayo Vallecano have a European final in midweek to come. Alaves at home, final day of the season. So there is a reason to play, even though, you know, to play and want to win, even though they're already safe. uh for rio there is a reason to play and want to win as well because because of the possibility of um of what you call it of a european place even beyond the the fact that they're in a in a european final yeah uh i've i i feel like this is a home win but then you know rio have far more riding on this there's currently eight on 47 points they've got got getafe only a point away from them they can't catch celta yet in in in sixth and they've got valencia brazo terad espanyol athletic Bilbao all just behind them um I don't know Al I'm going home win I'm going Alaves to win this I'm because I'm going to decide that for all that Rayo have something in play for all that they they managed to describe this as a final the other day so we've got two finals now a final for that European place and an actual final um and they should be the team that win this but I think
6:20Sid Lowe:at home alaves do yeah rio's minds for all they might you know talk yeah i just think the weight
6:27Alex Kirkland:of the final is just too much yeah okay what about bettis against levante sid well this is really significant i think because of course this is levante trying to survive um this is levante in a strong position to survive in the fact that they can go down this tells you everything about the relegation battle or not everything but quite a lot the fact that levante are 15th and and yet it's still not entirely safe. That said, it takes a pretty dramatic combination for Levante to go down. The only way they can go down is if they lose, if Elche lose, if Osasuna get at least a point, and if Mallorca do not win.
7:01Alex Kirkland:That's the only combination of results in the final day. So it takes four results falling exactly, well, I was going to say exactly their way, exactly the opposite of their way, falling against them for them to go down. That said, I think all four of those results are plausible. I really do. And so I don't think it's entirely done. And they obviously know it's not entirely done. And they'll be thinking they desperately want a point. And you would think that them going away, desperately needing a point against a better side who nothing can change now. Betis will finish fifth. So that says to you, doesn't it, very clearly that the Vanta gets something.
7:32Alex Kirkland:It says to you very clearly that this is a draw. The only thing is, Betis are really quite good. And certainly at home. And it's the last game of the season. I do think the last game of the season sort of changes things a little bit for teams. I don't think the last game of the season you sort of bin off like you might otherwise. And I go through Betis' results and they've only lost three times at home. Now, three, you might say is quite a lot, but it's Barcelona, Atletico Madrid and Atletic Club. And they haven't lost in the second half of the season at home. There's been quite a few draws. I'm really, really tempted to go for the draw.
8:08Alex Kirkland:I feel like Betis is the better side. I'm going draw. I'm going draw. Yeah, draw in that one. I like it.
8:16Sid Lowe:And draw would be, as you say, a good result.
8:19Alex Kirkland:Well, it would guarantee that Levante were safe.
8:21Sid Lowe:Levante, yeah. Okay. Okay, next up, it's Celta against Sevilla, Sid. Sevilla are safe, having been threatened by relegation for much of the season. Celta, as you mentioned, are up there in sixth place.
8:35Alex Kirkland:Yeah, up there in sixth place and basically safe there. I mean, they could get caught by Getafe. Although I must admit, I don't know what the head-to-head is between Celta and Getafe. I should have that in front of me. I don't. I apologise. I think this is... I think this is a home win.
8:53Sid Lowe:Yeah, I think so as well. Lots to celebrate at Balladiros with Barry confirming his name. Oh, of course. Barry will probably start, won't he? Staying on for another year. Yeah.
9:02Alex Kirkland:OK. Espanol against Real Sociedad. Espanol, Real Sociedad. A game that feels like it doesn't matter in the slightest for anybody. It's only really being played at the same time as all the others because of the possibility that Real Sociedad still could catch Getafe. In fact, this is the reason why Athletic Club are playing as well, because you could get a massive... You could get a one, two, three, four, four-way tie on 48 points. Getafe, sorry, Espanyol-Real Sociedad, I'm going for a draw. Draw, OK.
9:36Sid Lowe:Is there any concern about the way that Real's form has dropped off post-cup final? or is that just inevitable, do you think?
9:42Alex Kirkland:I think it was inevitable. I didn't think it was inevitable until they managed to lose to Getafe. And I think that was the game. And they were desperate and lucky then. They gave everything. They were desperate and lucky then. Then you get the 3-3 with Rayo. You get a 1-0 defeat away at Sevilla, Sevilla fighting for their lives. You get a 2-2 with Betis. You get a 1-1, is it, with away at Girona. You get them beaten 4-3 by Valencia again, another game where they're leading, and they just kind of let it go. And I think it's probably inevitable. I think it's probably circumstantial. And I think that's probably why this won't just be a draw.
10:15Alex Kirkland:It'll be something like a 2-2. Mind you, the idea that the Espanyol score twice is probably pushing it a bit, isn't it? Yeah.
10:23Sid Lowe:Next up, Getafe against Osasuna. Osasuna, one of the teams who have been dragged into this relegation battle and need to get a result.
10:31Alex Kirkland:Need to get a result. And Osasuna, of course, a team that didn't expect to be dragged into this relegation battle. The fact that they're still in a relegation battle with 42 points. Obviously, the kind of psychological threshold is 40. They were done a month ago. When they beat Sevilla, they were done. They were on 42 points with five games to go. It was done. They've lost four in a row. They're still on 42 points. They've lost four in a row. They shouldn't be in this position. And now they have the problem of trying to kind of re-engage, if you like, against a Taffy team who know that they've got, as we've already mentioned, what is it, four teams within three points, five teams, in fact, within three points of them, know that that Europa in place would be a huge achievement, know that it's the last game for Bordelass, and it's at home.
11:17Alex Kirkland:I don't see Ossesuna winning this. Now, so the question is, is this a home win or is it a draw?
11:25Sid Lowe:I'm going home win now. Okay, okay.
11:27Alex Kirkland:Were you saying draw, were you? I was going to say draw. Do you think Hetafe think that a draw is enough? 49 is... A draw probably is enough, isn't it? I'm going home win. OK. OK.
11:43Sid Lowe:Next up, a game that you mentioned earlier that you at one point were considering being at Mallorca against an already relegated Real Oviedo.
Read the full transcript
11:52Alex Kirkland:Yeah. And I just can't see, given that Mallorca have everything in play and given that Real Oviedo, since knowing that they were going down, you know, they did rebel, Oviedo. They really did rebel. They had that run where they won three and four, but they haven't won a game in the last six. They've only even managed to draw two of those, which were at home against Villarreal and at home against Getafe. They've been beaten by Alaves. They've been beaten by Real Madrid. All right, that can happen. They've been beaten at home by Elche. And that was the day when you thought, right, that's it. It's done.
12:22Alex Kirkland:It's over. So I can't see anything other because of the significance of this for Mallorca, who are currently second bottom, who desperately need a win. But the problem is, I suppose, for the significance, I say the significance of Mallorca, I think Mallorca think they're already down because I think they know that they need a really bizarre combination of results. Yeah, can you just do that combination? Only survive if they beat Oviedo, if Osasuna lose at Getafe, if Elche lose against Girona, and if Levante gets something at Betis. Now, for what it's worth, the statistics say that it's 95 % they go down.
13:00Alex Kirkland:But those statistics, of course, are flawed because those statistics are based on 95 % of the potential outcomes see them go down. You know, all the combinations of results across the whole league, 95 % of the outcomes have them going down. But that, of course, presupposes that all those outcomes are equally plausible. And I don't think they are. Let me run through that list again. Mallorca are safe if they beat Oviedo. Well, they should. And that's what I'm about to predict. They should be safe if Osasuna lose at Getafe. Well, they should. And that's what I've just predicted. They should be safe if Elche lose against Girona.
13:32Alex Kirkland:And let's not get ahead of ourselves, but I think that's what I'm about to predict. And they should be safe if Levante get a point. Now, this might sound bizarre. Why should they need Levante to get a point? Wouldn't it be better if Levante, who are also relegation candidates, lose? And the reason is that it's done on head-to-head if the teams follow finish level. And if more than one team is involved in that head-to-head, it's done on what's effectively a mini-league. Now, what Mallorca don't want is for that mini-league to involve Levante because it ruins their results. It drives them down the table in that mini league.
14:02Alex Kirkland:So they want Levante to win or draw and be clear of that mini league and to not have them in the mini league. And I think that is plausible. So let's go for Mallorca home win. Yeah. Which takes them to 42 points. OK.
14:18Sid Lowe:What we really need is you with like a giant blackboard and a bit of chalk and a series of incredibly complex equations. Going through this. You know, a beautiful mind.
14:26Alex Kirkland:I mean, given that I can't do simple additions, the idea...
14:29Sid Lowe:No, it would be complete nonsense, but just visually as an image, that's what I'm getting.

Carvalhoff says goodbye. Real Madrid are at home. Alvaro Albaloa kind of says goodbye. Vinny isn't even... Vinny's on holiday. Yeah. Yeah. Mbappé maybe gets worse with again.
16:22Alex Kirkland:And Kylian Mbappé wants his Pichichi award.
16:26Sid Lowe:Yeah, yeah, he does. While on the subject of Real Madrid, we should mention, we discussed in the bonus pod yesterday, whether Enrique Raquelme would present his candidacy as president in the elections which Florentino Perez called last week. Last night, Raquelme sent a letter to Madrid's electoral commission saying that he does intend to stand. and he then has 48 hours until Saturday to present his candidacy and that of his board and to meet all of the requirements, which will then be revised by the Electoral Commission. So in theory, at least we are getting elections. Yeah, which is not a bad thing, I don't think.
17:02Sid Lowe:Yeah, no, absolutely not. All it's worth, Raquel May won't win.
17:05Alex Kirkland:Well, who knows? This is one of those videos where people clip it and then go, look at you, dickhead. But on the face of it, Raquel May won't win.
17:13Sid Lowe:Yeah, it's very difficult to conceive of a scenario in which he does, for sure. Okay, Valencia, Barcelona. Barcelona are champions. Their players were celebrating partying in midweek.
17:27Alex Kirkland:Valencia are safe. Yeah, with an outside chance of a European place. I mean, is it madness to go for Valencia in this? No. I don't think it is, is it? I don't think it is. I'm going Valencia. I mean I don't have a lot of faith in Valencia but I'm going Valencia
17:47Sid Lowe:yeah okay okay okay so just two more games to discuss one of them is the game that you'll be at Sid the most important game of the weekend one of the biggest games of the season Girona against Elche at Montelivi this is going to be I mean it's going to be incredibly incredibly
18:06Alex Kirkland:tense and dramatic isn't it it's going to be incredible absolutely incredible because these two teams basically i'm going to use the cliche this really does feel like a final essentially you win this you're out of trouble you you lose this and you're probably going there
18:22Sid Lowe:it's a one-off relegation playoff like we used to get in the in the holidays actually and of course
18:27Alex Kirkland:it's not just a final for these two teams it's a final for everyone around them because as we've been talking about the various combinations osasuna and levante and mallorca also partly depend on this. Now, in some cases, they've got their fate in their own hands. In other words, Levante know that they're safe if they win. They know that they're safe if they get a point. Osasuna, the same thing. They know that if they're safe, they get a point. But if they don't get those points, then they would depend on the result of this. This is a really difficult game to call, I think. I mean, on the face of it, you would say it's relatively simple to call because actually elche's away record is really really terrible this year they've only won once away admittedly it was at the home of the greatest team in the entire world ever um that's not arsenal by the way al although it does have a former arsenal player playing for them um their only away win is at oviedo girona in theory i actually i mean you you were telling me this weren't you you were doing their game last weekend drona are not terrible they're not they're a good team except for the
19:31Sid Lowe:most important thing they're good at everything except scoring goals i was i was impressed i hadn't watched them that much this season and i was like wow these these guys can they play play football and unahi's a brilliant player i love watching him he gets on the ball all the time and that's a good thing for for them but yeah the the number of chances they created and didn't convert against atleti was absurd yeah and and of course vanat their top scorer is out and has been
19:53Alex Kirkland:out for a while which is one of the reasons why why why they're in this in this position because then you think well who are the other strikers i can see a scenario in which christian stuani comes on and becomes the, you know, as if he's not enough of a legend as it is, becomes the absolute all time greatest thing that ever, ever, ever happened to Girona, which he already is,
20:10Sid Lowe:I suppose. Well, in the, in the athletic game, you know, their approach kind of changed entirely when Stuani came on, because up to that point, it was all sort of really nice, intricate play around the box. And then Stuani came on and they did start lumping it. Stick it in a mixer. Yeah. And actually Stuani had a really, had a really good chance that he didn't properly connect with. What do you think the atmosphere is going to be like at Montelievi? Because it's not exactly a kind of a hostile atmosphere normally. I mean, they do have one of the best anthems, club anthems. Oh, it's the most catchy anthem.
20:37Sid Lowe:We know that. I think it might not be the best,
20:40Alex Kirkland:but it's definitely the most catchy.
20:41Sid Lowe:Yeah, it's going to be, yeah, it's going to be nervy. It's going to be tense. But do you know what I mean? It's not going to be like hostile for Elche. It's not a place that you go and you think, oh, you know.
20:49Alex Kirkland:No, and these aren't two teams that you think hostility with either of them, really. And they're both two teams that want the ball. They're both two teams that want to play. So the way that the game plays out, I think it's going to be very interesting. I think we've got an Elche home win here.
21:08Sid Lowe:A Girona home win? Sorry, a Girona home win. Okay. Okay. Wow. And very quickly, because it doesn't matter, on Sunday, Villar at Letty, what do we think? 2-2 draw. Draw. Fine. Okay, so Sid, based on those predictions, predictions based on the calculations of the sidlow relegation supercomputer and what does this mean what outcome have we predicted um do you want to go through it i want to go through it so levante would have 43 points and would be safe girona would have 43 points and would be safe
21:44Alex Kirkland:yes osasuna would have 42 elche would have 42 and mallorca would have 42 and as i check on my notes here. Here are the combinations. What did I say? It was Elche, Osasuna and Mallorca. Elche, Osasuna, Mallorca. Do you know who goes down? Osasuna and Elche. Mallorca do survive. As I said, the combinations are plausible.
22:08Sid Lowe:Oh my goodness.
22:09Alex Kirkland:Let me explain why. I've got the this is your mini league table. Mallorca 2, Osasuna 2. Osasuna 2, Mallorca 2. Mallorca 3, Elche 1. Elche 2, Mallorca 1. Osasuna 1, Elche 1. Elche 0, Osasuna 0. The mini league table, sends Osasuna and Elche down. Incredible.
22:27Sid Lowe:I mean, that would be amazing. That would be amazing. Now, of course, no. And it would make me think I should have been in Mallorca. Yes. Yes. In fact, yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I mean, wow. Wow. Okay, Sid. Yeah, let's see if any of that actually transpires or not. But I would very much enjoy the scenario that you are.
22:48Alex Kirkland:If there is a, hang on, I'm just reading it. I'm just making sure of this. if there is a tie between Mallorca, Elche and Osasuna, Osasuna and Elche go down. That's my version of things, right? Mallorca can only survive if they beat Oviedo. Tick. Osasuna lose at Getafe. Tick. Did I say that? Yes. Elche lose against Girona. Yes. And Levante get a draw. I said Levante. I did say Levante were getting a draw, didn't I? And Levante get a draw at Betis. There we go. So I think the thing that might screw Mallorca is I think that Levante might not get that draw at Betis. Yeah. And if Levante don't get that draw in Betis, should I tell you what happens?
23:25Alex Kirkland:If Levante don't get that draw in Betis, so they become part of the 42 tie, the tie then would be 42 points. Levante, Osasuna, Elche, Mallorca. Should I tell you who goes down in that case? If a tie is Levante, Osasuna, Elche and Mallorca, Mallorca, Levante, Osasuna, Elche, guess who goes down? You ready? Mallorca and Osasuna. So Osasuna are in trouble here.
23:50Sid Lowe:We're saying this.
23:51Alex Kirkland:We're calling this Osasuna in trouble. Theoretically, only 6 % chance, but they're going down.
23:56Sid Lowe:I can picture Sid on the touchline at Monteliti with all these sheets of paper, just frantically scribbling and turning page after page. You're live on air in 30 seconds.
24:06Alex Kirkland:That's the problem, Al. I'm going to be standing in front of a camera, trying not to hold all my pages up, trying not to go, I'm going through these now. And I'm going to be there going, shit, who's down? What does this mean? And do you know the other thing is, I'll probably be live on there before one of the other game finishes. The chances are this game will finish first. And someone will be in your ear giving you possibly erroneous information. People will be in my ear telling me things and telling me to hurry up and why isn't the camera focusing on you? And can we deal with this now, please?
24:35Sid Lowe:I think play into it. Play into the fun. Play into the confusion. Play into all the bits of paper. It'll make for great TV if you're watching in North America. Do you know what?
24:43Alex Kirkland:I might actually ask them if they could give me like a flip chart whiteboard and I can literally be standing there. Do you know what?
24:49Sid Lowe:that's a brilliant idea do you think that La Liga regulations allow you to have sort of a little like an easel next to you with a whiteboard on the touchline
24:56Alex Kirkland:that is an amazing idea
24:59Sid Lowe:I'm going to ask mind you either that or just get the producer who's there with you to hold up a big bit of cardboard as you know Al
25:08Alex Kirkland:given that we can't really even produce a bottle of water at most games the chances are just getting on air is often a miracle the chances are us producing
