1:05Welcome to the Thoughtful Entrepreneur. I am feeling a little under the weather today, so normally you might hear me being a little bit more chipper, but I've got good news because my guest has all the energy. He's going to pick up the slack that I normally bring. David C. Olcott, again, you are the founder and CEO of Samurai Success. Your website is samuraisuccess.com. David, thank you so much for joining us. Gosh, thanks for having me on. Really appreciate it. Yeah. Oh, I see you spent some time in Florida, by the way, where I'm at. Oh, excellent. So yeah, in fact, I grew up in the Florida Keys.

1:39Wow. On the end of Florida, right? Big Pine Keys, my hometown. Went to Marathon High School, FIU University, University of Miami, and spent a lot of time in banking, law, politics, and stuff. So you and I probably have run into each other before. That's crazy.

1:58I'm going to get into Samurai Success here in just a second, but what is it like growing up in Marathon in the Keys? Spectacular. It really is gorgeous. If you haven't been there to our friend that's listening, please go and drive that highway. It's amazing. Do yourself a favor and make that sure that's on your bucket list because it is truly once-in-a-lifetime kind of event. The people down there are spectacular. It's a huge tourist town, right? Everybody makes their wealth somewhere else, and they all come down, and they party, and they have a good time. It's wonderful to grow up there as long as you have the right mindset because it can be really bad because you're watching all these other wealthy people enjoy your hometown and you're not enjoying as much as them because you don't have their wealth yet, you know?

2:38And so there was that contrast. I was like, I'm going to take it from that different perspective and really talk to these people and figure out how they became successful. Yeah. What'd you find out? Well, I found out that there's some principles that we have to be able to follow because results follow your behaviors and behaviors are tied and connected to your belief systems. So if your beliefs and your behaviors aren't congruent, then you're going to get a different set of results than someone who is actually having their beliefs and their behaviors that are congruent. So when you know who you are and you act accordingly, then all of a sudden your beliefs and your behaviors are congruent.

3:17And that congruency over time creates coherence. Coherence is your something called your attractor factor. It's what attracts events to you. So that's what we teach here at Samurai Success is actually how to use that formula, that spiritual formula in business and practical with entrepreneurs. Yeah. Well, tell me about, I mean, what is Samurai Success? So Samurai loosely translated means in service of others. And when I was growing up, I heard the greatest life you could live was being in service of others. So when I ran into this book years later, after I'd heard that principle, that concept called Samurai Selling, I was like, whoa, what is this?

3:56And, you know, this whole concept of being in service of other success, which is the name of our company. I was really curious, can you become wealthy and successful, truly helping other people? Because I hadn't run into a lot of that in my life, Josh. I mean, I'd seen a lot of people who had run over people, bulldozed people, stolen from people, but I hadn't really seen the model that the masters talk about that someone who's truly in service of others being successful themselves. So that's the group of people I I started studying to be able to find their formula, if you will, for success. And that's what put me on the path.

4:29Yeah, well, connect the dots for us. Like, help someone understand, you know, they might think that more of a Gordon Gekko approach might be appropriate, right? Just, you know, it's just all about the almighty dollar. But what you're suggesting is something a little bit different. Well, Gordon Gekko is a perfect example of me growing up in the 80s with Wall Street and stuff like this. The reason why Gordon Gekko's character, of course, in the movie is so connectable because we see the Gordon Gekko's in our world. We see them being successful. What makes them successful is what we've come to find out.

5:02It's not about your ability to understand your own personal consciousness, which in the spiritual teachings, your consciousness leads to goodness and goodness leads to being great and all that stuff. That's not how this physical plane works. We've seen that. We can see really not such good people becoming very successful. And it was like, what is happening here? I mean, I'm learning all this lessons. I'm listening to all these different people and they're telling me all these rules and they're not working. What works in this physical plane is understanding when you decide who you are, and that's the first point that we need to talk about is that successful people on this planet do not wait for someone to tell them who they are.

5:40They themselves create who they are, Josh. that is what then starts the whole process of then then there's certain actions and behaviors that you have to be willing to do to be congruent with that identity for example if i say i'm a world-class athlete and i go sit on that couch over there and i eat cheetos all day something is not matching up so you start to see really clearly and this is what i was taught early on was that beliefs and behaviors create results if you don't like the results you got to take a look at the behaviors. If you don't have their behaviors, strategies that most of us talk about, then you don't have strong enough beliefs.

6:18And that belief, the fundamental belief about everything you're going to control, manage, or influence in your life comes from your identity about who you say you are. Yeah. Well, if someone is uncertain how they come up with those definitions, what might be a good exercise to help them get to some clarity over who they are and what they want to be? This is actually a process that we've developed to be able to take people through that. It's a year long process to be able to do it. But if you're going to do it on your own, let's talk about some of that value right now. The very first thing you want to do is find a quiet space.

6:52And you want to sit down and say, who do I admire in this lifetime? What are some of the key characteristics? What are some of the key behaviors that I see in these people? And you know, you admire these people. You're like, oh man, I really like the way you did that. Well, there's a strategy that creates that character, but there's also a belief that supports that character. And that belief and the behavior is what you want to be able to create congruency. So sitting down and writing down all those key characteristics that you would like to be and writing those and then making sure they're in your face every single day, reminding you, this is who I am.

7:27This is who I am. Then as you walk into different scenarios, you can then change that dynamic because as a human being, if you go into church, you're one person. But if you go into a nightclub, you're a totally different person, or at least let's hope you are, right? Because they're not going to accept certain behaviors in the church that you do with the nightclub and the nightclub that you do with the church. These environmental things change our opportunity to change our identity or our role distinctions. So if I want to be a really great negotiator, there's certain behavioral skill sets I need to learn so that stays congruent, we be a great negotiator.

8:05If I'm not willing to do those things, then I'm never going to become the great negotiator I say I am. This applies to every single subject you and I can talk about. So then you have the formula that says, wow, when I'm sitting down writing these key characteristics about who I want to be, then that's who I'm going to be. And this is the next thing I'm going to do that supports that. And that creates this havingness. So be, do, have is a spiritual formula that we actually use here at Samurai Success for our entrepreneurs to understand how to truly be in service to your clients, your customers, your employees, and everything else, truly becoming Samurai.

8:42Yeah. What does your work look like with your clients? Well, it's a very unique coaching system that we've developed. We just celebrated our 27th year in October here. And we've developed a system that is really unique in the marketplace because when you hire Samurai Success, you don't hire one coach, you actually hire three coaches, all in our pod system. And each one of the coaches focus on different aspects of your business. So the very first coach is your head coach or psychology coach, the person that helps you with what we call programming, because your programming determines how you're going to respond and react to certain situations, right?

9:18And it's going to make you make decisions. So programming is a huge part of our work and having you see how you have to change that programming in order to be able to get to the next level, because everything you believe right now has gotten you where you are, but will not get you where you want to go. So you've got to change something programming. the next part is our design work which we really sit down and write down all the process and by the way josh yeah some remarkable stuff man about getting me prepared for this conversation today i really thank you for it but i know how much hard work it was so i really want to appreciate you about setting all those things over staying on top of me making sure even to the last minute that was right on board with that structure and so much of that is missing in our our businesses and that's what's causing us not to be successful so our design team focuses on the structure of your business.

10:04And then the finances are all designed to be able to demonstrate to you, prove to you from a financial perspective that your programming and the things you're doing, your process work is actually getting you the results you're on in an accelerated way. Yeah. You know, and I think especially as we're going into the new year, I would imagine that, you know, you probably talk with people and David, they say, well, you know, I've kind of done that work. You know, I've got my mission purpose values like i've done that deep work you know it was a few years ago or a couple years ago um obviously things evolve things change we grow hopefully we're always growing right and so i think of who i am today david i am just nowhere near what i who i was i shouldn't say nowhere near the core values i think have really been cleared away a little bit um you know i but but I probably would do well to revisit.

11:02And I'm sure that that's a very common thing for you as well. Yeah, most of our entrepreneurs have gotten to a place where they've fallen out of love with their business, right? They started with a passion project. They got involved because they loved doing whatever they were doing, the product or service. And then they realized, oh my gosh, there's so much other things. I got to market. I got to find customers. And the stuff they don't like to do. We help them fall in love with the things they don't like to do because those things are the things that are necessary that's going to take them to the next level.

11:28So you got really two choices as an entrepreneur. You can choose to love what you don't like. And there's actually ways you can change your programming to actually fall in love with things that you don't like to do. It's through practice and actually seeing the result you're after. Oh, that helps me get to that. Oh, I can start liking this again. And the second part is if you don't want to take that path, then you have to be able to then send that to somebody to transfer your information to somebody else. And that's a really difficult part for most people because everything's stored in my head.

11:58How do I get everything in my head over to you? Well, that's where our design work comes in and we start mapping out exactly how you do this. So the ultimate outcome here is I want to be able to have the service and products stay exactly as they are, quality control, profitability, as if I'm doing the work without me doing the work. And that's the success we've had with our business. Yeah. So here we are on this note. Here we are the year ahead. This is, I believe, likely airing in December or thereabouts. And so 2025, filled with mystery and a lot of unknowns. What might be, you know, I know people talk a lot about, you know, making New Year's resolutions.

12:46I think most people I know know that that really does not need to be just a New Year's thing. But I think it is a good reminder for us to visit. So for thinking about the things that we want to, not just who we want to be, but the things that we want to do. And again, it sounds like you connect the dots on that pretty heavily. But certainly, if we think about the goals that we want to achieve, like, let's say, you know, we want to increase, you know, top line revenue by 50 % or something like that over the course of the year. Like, how would you break that down? So let's break it down to the simplest form we can at third grade level, if you will.

13:24Yeah. The most successful people have this single characteristic over and over again. They have this unique ability to make you the most important person in their life in the moment. They are so present, Josh. It's a remarkable strategy. I mean, it's a remarkable characteristic you see over and over again at different temperatures, at different degrees of this. Some are like full 100%. Some are a little 90. Some are 80. But they all have this characteristic of truly focusing on you in the moment of now. Now, that's a skill set that takes time to develop. and the most important work you can do.

13:58So your hedgehog or your New Year's resolution, if you will, is really sitting there going, what work could I do to really make me the best I can be this year? And here it is, work on you. Go back to the basics. Sit down with your identity, your mission statement. Why are you here? What is your purpose for being here? What is it you want to accomplish while you're here? Because life is so short. Get back to those basics because what you're really working on is that if you've solved all that stuff inside, we actually call it getting the hell out of the way. Because if you really want to develop the characteristic behavioral skillset, mindset, skillset, toolset of being present, then you can't be listening to that internal voice, that chatter that we all have.

14:43Josh, you know what I'm talking about, right? It's just a million months. Did I leave the toast run? Did I do? Any of that stuff is a distraction from this moment of us being able to connect. And I promise you, if you want more sales, you want better relationships, you want something with your lady, you want something with your guy, you want something with your kids. I don't care what genre you could ask me about. This single characteristic changes everything. It doesn't guarantee you're going to get the sale, but I promise you in that sales situation where you're in it and you're truly present like you and I are being right now, that customer is going to remember that moment because their next person they're going to miss meet is not going to do that.

15:20And that characteristic becomes incredibly enlightened, it really becomes illuminated, if you will, to be able to say, really, I don't know what it was about that person, but I just want to work with them. Yeah, we feel it. It's, you know, that energetic match and that connection. Well, David, you would just have a couple of minutes left here. So to our friend that's been listening, and they've enjoyed our conversation, kind of the topic we're talking about, your website is Samurai Success. I don't know if you've got any resources you'd recommend, maybe if someone's maybe not quite ready for a conversation, but If they want to dig more into your thought leadership, what would you recommend?

15:56So we've just started social media this year. As a matter of fact, 27 years, no marketing. We've done only referral-based marketing kind of stuff. We've done no social media as of February of this year. I've been on 30 podcasts since there. So we've created a lot of content for value. So Samurai underscore success is a great location to be able to go to because we have all the videos of all the podcasts we've been doing and all the value added. On which channel, on which platform? On Instagram. Oh, on Instagram. So Instagram Samurai underscore success. Okay. And LinkedIn, of course, is David C.

16:31Alcott. Okay. You can go to that. Yeah, yeah. All right. And then for a friend that's listening right now that says, I like David, I want to have a conversation with him. What usually happens on that conversation? What's the process to do that? So the first thing was be able to reach out to us, say, hey, you know, I was really curious about discovering more about what you guys are talking about. And absolutely a phone call, a Zoom call, something that we're going to connect so we can see each other and really make sure that we're going to be a good fit for you. There's really two things that you need to work on as an entrepreneur.

17:00Are you truly committed to reaching your goals this year? As many of our clients have said, don't even think about hiring these guys unless you're serious about your goals, because you're going to get there kicking and screaming, but you're going to get there. So make sure you're committed to where you want to go. And I will tell you, that's an easier thing said than done. So it's really about recommitting to who you are, what you really want to accomplish before you seek out any coach, first of all. That commitment is what you bring to the table. The fit that we want to call it, commitment and fit is the structure that we bring, the system that we've developed over the last 27 years.

17:32Yeah. All right, David C. Alcott. Again, your website, SamuraiSuccess.com. David, thank you so much for the conversation. Josh, thanks so much for having me. I really, really appreciate it.
