22While supplies last, ends June 30th. Terms at aka.ms slash college PC. Welcome back to the Upshot special on England's banter years slash darkest decade, 2007-17. Sponsored by Injury Lawyers for You, the personal injury lawyers who fight for you, unlike those overpaid England stars who've got no pride in the jersey. My name's Jack. We've got George and Zach still with me. How we doing? How we doing? You will remember, I'm actually doing pretty shit, guys, because at the end of part one, England were dumped out of the World Cup in South Africa. Yeah. A low. It was a low. Went out with a whimper, really.
02I don't remember loving that World Cup that much. No. They had that Ghibliani ball that just didn't really... No one knew how to manage it. The Guzalas. Yeah. I think the vibes at the World Cup were quite good. It was just... You know, it was fun that the World Cup was in Africa for the first time. Who won? Spain. Spain, yeah. even the final was it was a bit edgy wasn't it it was it was the Nigerian parate kick oh it was the Netherlands oh yeah of course the best moment was the South African opening game where yeah yeah goal for South Africa goal for all of Africa all Africa yeah Wayne Marooney says it's the shitiest World Cup but I mean he would say that he was having his own fans right so England are dumped out of the World Cup but actually Rock Bottom is still several tournaments away and god that's visual if we'd known that at the time yeah what would you have just not bothered yeah
01England's cupboards do start to look quite bare after this era so the golden generation out they go and in come a bunch of absolute shit munchers to be honest with you this is the point also where people go from being like England they just don't care to being like they're just shit can we even know you're not even angry anymore yeah disappointed apathy it's weird because it also coincides with one of the cruel facts of this era is that we had our greatest ever player around like Rooney Jay Bothroy John Ruddy Jimmy Bullard never got a cap yeah Rooney yeah and then everything around him was just utter shy I mean in terms of like how good they were for their clubs we had loads of England's best players in this era anyway Capello he sees that he's going to have to start blooding some new stars so he phases David Beckham out after this point.
55Beckham hadn't made the tournament but there was talk that he'd still, you know, return. But Capello, he gives an interview and he says, I think probably it's the end for David Beckham and he cites two promising youngsters as better picks for the future. Theo Walcott and Adam Johnson who, to be fair, knows a thing or two about spotting young talent. This is also the year that Peter Crouch plays his last ever England game, 2010. That seems early to me. I thought that. Peter Crouch is knocking about for years after that his England career is only sort of four or five years yeah yeah so he he plays a final game against France a friendly and that's the last time we see Crouch isn't that the game when Jay Bothroy plays you're getting phased out for Jay that's a straight swap when was the robot era?
42earlier sort of 2006 yeah because he scores that goal against I want to say Jamaica he scores a hat trick against Jamaica yeah yeah why do I know that? Actually, Peter, perhaps it's not just footballing reasons why he's phased out the England team in 2010 because he had recently suffered a tabloid scandal of his own. They keep coming. So in August 2010, a Spanish woman called Monica Mint claims... We'll participate in she for her. I've got a feeling that isn't her real name. She claims that she gave Peter Crouch a blowie in the back of a taxi in Madrid while he was on a stag do. earlier that year.
20Right. And The Sun published it with the charming headline, Lanky Stars Fling With Tart. That is... They've got away with words. So elegant, the tabloid writing, isn't it? Yeah. Also, presumably, the journalist had spent, you know, maybe a few weeks speaking to Monica because it was a kiss and tell story, sort of writing it up, building a bit of rapport. And she was like, yeah, I'm excited to read the article. when's it out any idea what the headlines could have been yeah not yet not yet yeah couple of options we're thinking we're going beautiful Monica's night of passion that's one option with Spanish beauty I think I'll probably buy a few copies you know get one for my grand
09yeah stars fling with tart presumably they're not answering the phones and Monica after it's hit the old news stats so Monica is interviewed extensively. She says, Crouch was wearing jeans and a shirt and those pointy black dress shoes all Englishmen wear. They're horrible. Is that like the Russell Brand? It's true. Winkle pickers. Yeah, Winkle pickers. Can't imagine Crouch wearing Winkle pickers. I think he did. Skinny jeans. Winkle pickers and jeans. Yeah. Such a bad look. She said, because he's so, they're in a taxi. She's giving him a blowjob. Because he's so tall, his legs were squashed up and the taxi driver was making jokes because our movements were squashing his seat.
47Is a taxi driver just fine with this then yeah apparently the i think the cab driver sells his story too there's something a bit fishy about this story but yeah the cab driver he he says he has to like conduct the negotiation sorry she's an escort by the way if that wasn't clear from the headline it's the taxi driver called a tart when in the story he sold yeah what was the cab driver referred to as i don't know but he was he was heavily involved um monica also said i don't think Peter is good looking, but he's a nice person. So yeah, that's a bit of ill discipline. Possibly why Capello phases him out.
20I mean, he's a disciplinarian. Actually, the same game that Crouch hangs up his boots, I think we said that Jay Bothroyd debuts in that game. It's not the only debutant, because in comes a very promising youngster, central midfielder by the name of Jordan Henderson. Here we go. He's had a long old England career then isn't it? Well he's only 20 years old in 2010 so yeah this is young. In fact he's so young that only two years earlier he'd set up his Bebo profile which fortunately has been preserved online I'll get it up on screen but I'll read it out. So you know you have a profile where you can sort of choose the titles a bit like a hinge profile so he went first section tagline and it just says had good game versus Ajax because I remember one of his first games for Sunderland was a preseason game against Ajax that he was he had a good game and then he said me myself and I my name's Jordan Henderson I play for Sunderland I'm number 42 you know where to do the accent Jordan Henderson me myself and I my name's Jordan Henderson what's happening here I play for Sunderland in number 42 and I'm hoping to get in the first team for the scum game is that Newcastle I guess yeah Derby I wanna I wanna win the FA Cup for Sunderland before I'm 30 I played against Falkirk and Ajax and was on the bench versus Liverpool last season.
47I was the first 17-year-old to be named in the Premier Reserve League team of the season and was named in 442 magazine's top 20 under 21 players in the world with people like Messi, Fabregas, Aguero, Nani, Bojan, Benzema, Pato and Wolcott. Spot the old ones out. that's actually amazing how many of those have been good players including Henderson yeah yeah for sure Bojan sort of like a LinkedIn profile Bojan was hyped at that point wasn't it yeah it was the new Messi yeah I also won Premier Under-18s league player of the season for two years when I was 16 and 17 it's getting a bit in my eye we hit you with the candy apple rain house of colours paint and won the league with Sunderland both years.
43I got a gorgeous girl called Sarah and she's amazing and I love her and been together just over a year. It's great. Add me, jhenderson2008 at live.co.uk. Kiss. There's more. I don't know how much this is going to make you. He says, favorite player, Carlos Edwards. Favorite other player, Cristiano Ronaldo. Scared of nothing. Happiest when Playing for Sunderland Yeah it's quite charming Yeah It reads like a LinkedIn profile We've got a pic of him From the profile If you just scroll down I think this is him and Sarah His gorgeous girl Actually there's a caption He's quite He's good looking Quite striking isn't he He's got some Wolf of Wall Street shirt Yeah It's actually It's the Match of the Day Shirt from that era Oh yeah The one colour With a different colour colour Yeah Alan Sugar in it Yeah The caption of the photo is some lad me gorgeous girl and me he's good looking isn't he i would uh wouldn't be surprising that's still his email address as well if you are looking to contact john anderson give it a go give it a go he's actually not the only england player from the northeast who's debuting in this era and has a quality bebo profile because andy andy carroll's one is also still alive tagline the big ac um favorite film is the jungle book it is an unreal movie look for the bear necessity is the simple bet.
04It's all the lyrics to better necessity. Sport, anything really. I play football for Newcastle, but I like a lot of other stuff. Go to the gym every day and keep toned up. Scared of, I've got a big fear for spiders. I absolutely hate them and hate stuff like snakes and that. Brackets, not my snake though. Winky face. That's great. Remember Bebo. It was actually quite brutal. Do you remember? You still have to like rank your friends. Are you ranking Andy Carroll or Jordan Henderson higher based on those? one scared of spiders, one scared of nothing. Jordan Henderson had a good game against Ajax, which edges him above Andy for me.
39Good point. Anyway, after the disappointment of the last World Cup, it's back to business as usual, really, and the qualification for the next Euros win the group relatively easily. It's actually during that campaign that Capello decides it's about time he reappointed John Terry as captain. He said that he decided that one year off the job was punishment enough for knobbing. for nobbing when well whether you believe on that story or not yeah that's that's why that was the story that came out that he'd obviously with Vanessa Perrin's self-truthers on this part they didn't check but that was he was yeah dropped for that stripped of the captaincy for that but Capello puts him back in that decision does backfire when Terry doesn't repay his faith and an even nastier scandal hits him when he's banned for four matches for racially abusing Anton Ferdinand during a Premier League match, which we talked about again on the Terry episode, so won't get into the details of it or Terry's defense that he was just repeating the phrase back to Anton.
43But that aside, four games is ridiculous for a ban because they found him guilty of racing with a four-match ban, which for context, the same year, a 14-year-old kid was given a five-match ban for giving his name as Father Christmas to a ref, when he was booked. I mean, that shouldn't be a five-match ban. It shouldn't be a five-match ban, but he's getting more than... 25 % worse than racially abusing someone on the page. Yeah. And Meechow got a nine-match ban for, like, touching a ref. Yeah. It's ridiculous. Anyway, the whole John Terry scandal causes a major headache, really, for England and for Capello.
24Lots of calls for Terry to never be picked again, quite understandably. the FA eventually decide on a compromise of once again stripping him of the captaincy which Fabio Capello firmly disagrees with does a interview on Italian TV where he publicly calls out the FA says that it wasn't his decision and that proves to be the end of him he resigns over the issue in February 2012 what so he quits because they won't let him make a racist captain
59four months out from the Euros well we kind of like it is quite funny that that is the hill that Capello died on I will walk yeah make him just don't make him captain yeah still playing I guess he would say I can't have them interfering in my selection or whatever yeah I find like Fabio Capello you sort of think you understand him but I still don't yeah he's like arch disciplinarian except for racism fine So obviously there's a lot of speculation over who's going to replace Capello. It's only four months out from the Euros. A few names floating around. Alan Pardew, who was doing pretty well at Newcastle at the time.
36He's also a good short tournament manager. I think he'd be good because everyone says with Pardew at first, everyone loves him and then you realise he's a cunt. Remember at the time he was, he ruled himself out of contention as well. And he was like, I don't know, like 30 to one or something. And he released a statement being like, I'm ruling myself out of contention. it's like you were never getting out of him I think Newcastle finished 5th or something he did well Newcastle seemed to hate him even when they were doing well which I never quite understood I thought he got a bit of a harsh deal he'd be good for like one tournament I think maybe yeah well you've got to be a special kind of bellend to take Newcastle to a 5th place finish and then everyone still hate you as well the stories are to be believed I think who else was on the shortlist I once walked past Alan Pardew in Covent Garden and he just had sort of bags full of like I don't know like Selfridges shopping bags and stuff and I kind of locked eyes with him because I was like oh that's Alan Pardew and it's hard to say just in person how smug he's the smuggest man I've ever seen in the flesh I was sort of hoping you were going to say and he just winked at me he may as well he honestly may as well have he sort of just went yeah it's me I love the cat who got the cream aren't I the overwhelming favourite back then was Harry Redknapp.
57Harry. What could have been? He was doing a great job at Spurs then. They were already on the ARP. Champions League. And he, you know, everyone was, everyone was behind him really. It seemed like he was a shoo-in for the job. So much so that a friend of Harry's who owned a golf shop decided to drop around a gift for him. But he tells Harry, look, you can't open this present till it's been announced, till the England job's been announced. don't want to jump the gun. Obviously, that proves to be a bit premature because the FA go for Roy Hodgson instead. And after that news is announced, Harry's a bit pissed off and he's like, fuck it, I was going to open it anyway.
34Opens up the box and it's a pair of golf shoes with the England badge on them. Oh no. Which, Harry blames the golf shoes on him not getting the job, thinks they were cursed. Yeah. Supposedly, the FA didn't go for Harry Redneck because of all this, the supposed, you know, the tax stuff and I heard from somewhere that the lawyer who got him off on that case it was ridiculous he had like bank accounts named in his dog's names and stuff but they hired a flying not hired sorry they suspended a toy pig over this lawyer's office desk to sort of demonstrate pigs can't fly you got Harry read that off the case but it's mad because like obviously Harry had all these stories against him and then the FA now I've gone for too cool my mate Beth used to work at Cameo you know and Harry Reddack was on there and she was his account manager.
26He said that every time he'd have a meeting with her, she'd just be on the phone for her. She'd be like, oh, look. I can't remember what his wife's called, but he'd be like, all right, Beth's on the phone. Can I have a say hello with Beth? And then she'd be like, all right, Beth. And then they'd just like have a chinwag for ages. He's like, how's it all going with you? He's just really, really friendly guy. Should have got the job. Yeah, should have done. Wasn't to be in the end. This is what everyone's talking about. Everything's on the table. This is what champions come to take. This is what everyone came to see.
02And the slam! No do-overs. No second chances. No more Mr. Nice Guy. This is winner take all. The NBA Finals continue on ABC and the ESPN app. You don't wash your jersey during a win streak. You don't switch seats when your team's up big. And you definitely don't shave during the playoffs. When things are working, you don't change them. That's why when you drink Jägermeister, you drink it ice cold. Anything else? Well, that'd just be bad luck. Drink it cold or don't drink it at all. Jägermeister. Damn, that's cold. Drink responsibly. Jägermeister liqueur, 35 % alcohol by volume. Imported by Mast Jägermeister, U.S.

He'd had his disappointing Liverpool stint.
28Didn't work out for him there. It was post-Fulham. It was post-Fulham. So that was... Because Fulham was what built his rep up again. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I was looking through Roy Hodgson's Wikipedia the other day. The clubs that he managed, it's the most bizarre CV. In the 90s, he did like Inter Milan, Blackburn, but he also did Grasshopper. Loaded Scandi team. He did Swiss national team. Copenhagen, Swiss national team, Udinese. He's got a good rep around the heart, man. Because I remember when he got appointed at Fulham, I was like, who the hell is this guy? So yeah, he's got the mid-90s, he's managing Switzerland national team, then Inter Milan, Blackburn, Inter Milan again.
05And then it just gets random. Grasshoppers, Copenhagen, Udinese, United Arab Emirates national team, Viking, then the Finland national team, and then Fulham. After that, actually gets quite... then it gets that's what he saw Fulham, Liverpool, West Brom, England Palace, Watford Palace Bristol City yeah anyway odd career man of the world yeah he speaks like seven different languages yeah he's a genuinely impressive figure oh boy the Sun decided to welcome him with a lovely front page mocking his speech in better than it's boy gets the England job wing on the Uo's we'll see you in Ukraine and against France they've really laid that on thick Yeah, I think if they'd just gone for a Roy gets the England job, fine.
51But they've done it to death, really. I like the fact as well, we were just saying like, he's managed around the world. He speaks six languages, really like cultured, very respected. And that's how The Sun. They do actually get quite a lot of complaints from members of the public about that headline, demanding that they apologise for Roy. But The Sun, don't do that. They double down. They claim that anyone who's offended has had a sense of humour failure. anyway they also rope in Jonathan Ross to defend them who pronounces his R's in the same way and their next headline is Rossi Roy Rowe is ruddy ridiculous and obviously Jonathan Ross at the time is a great barometer of taste exactly when is the Andrew Sachs thing it must be a run oh it's a bit later this Rowe's ridiculous and he's fucking granddaughter it's interesting on that headline that they've spelt Roy Rowe is ruddy they could have just done the clean sweep Roy Rowe is ruddy ridiculous It would have been funny.
47They've still gone with it, but that'd be too much. There is a lie. Come on. Don't take the piss. I should take the piss here. I'll think you are. With respect, I think you are. Our first up in Roy's intro is, of course, the thorny John Terry issue. Roy decides to continue picking him, but appoints Stephen Gerrard as his captain in place. Much less controversial, Gerrard. unless of course you are a real tourophile a cheese lover that is uh do you remember the interview where where steven jarrod's asked what his favorite cheese is and he replies melted to be fair it is better melted yeah um he also has to decide whether to pick rio ferdinand um you know everyone's wondering can he be in the same dressing room as terry because terry's got a court day that summer over the racism to it to to Anton Ferdinand Rio's brother uh Hodgson doesn't exactly treat the decision on whether or not to pick pick Rio with much reverence when he reveals his decisions to some passengers on the tube you've got a picture here Roy just chatting to some commuters he's mad at the people yeah he's apparently one of them just asked him so is Rio getting in the squad and uh he replies I think Rio's career has reached the end of the road on the tube also there's people taking pictures the picture makes it so much funnier yeah it looks like it's always like it's giving politician on a campaign trial yeah was this on the way to Wembley no idea it is famously best reached by by tube but yeah the bloke's sort of just like leaning over his shoulder as well being like he's reached the end of the road he hadn't spoken to Rio about this point he gets out into the press telling people on the circle yeah Hodgson does have to announce that publicly though he says then that it's for footballing reasons and to be fair to him Rio hadn't played for England for over a year I think at that point he'd had lots of injuries Fergie actually comes out and says yeah fair enough he wouldn't be able to manage the intensity of a tournament although actually years later Roy does admit that there was more to it than the footballing reasons because he said he he knew that rio and terry couldn't be in the same dressing room so he had to pick one or the other the racist probably the racist yeah i mean terry was in footballing terms probably the better pick yeah by that point i think terry had a longer shelf life than rio did at that point obviously that leaves a bit of a gap at center back in the team gary cahill comes in as first choice, but he gets an injury on the eve of Euro 2012, which rules him out.
39So Rory decides who else to pick but Martin Kelly, of course, the Liverpool centre-back, who has the dubious honour of having the shortest England career ever. Two minutes and 39 seconds. Gets subbed on for the last two minutes, 39 seconds for a friendly against Norway. In a way, is that better than having like two matches. It's quite fun. You can sort of embrace it. You've got like pub quiz ability there. There's a bit of legacy. Yeah. And you're like, well, it's not like I got a chance and fucked it. Yeah. I never, you know what I mean? I just like had, had the experience. Whereas if you play a few, it's like.
18Do you know who's the second shortest career? Is it recent? Relatively recent. Yeah. Go on. It's Nathaniel Chalaba who played one second longer than Martin Kelly did. That's the one you want. Yeah. Not the shortest. Martin, Martin Kelly, does make the squad actually for Euro 2012. Must have impressed Roy with his two minute cameo. It doesn't make it onto the pitch though, sadly. Apparently he came down with a virus at the tournament. He was sick for the whole thing. So just up in his room, just like, I'm so ill. Always have those two minutes, 39 seconds there. He might've played. That tournament actually starts all right for England.
00They top a group with France in it. but then in the next round they go out on penalties to Italy it's the one remember when Pirlo did the did the Penenka doesn't he like totally outplay yeah I mean the fact that England even got to penalties in that match was a miracle really Pirlo was just at his peak there Penenka in a shootout you bastard it's really it was filthy but not actually the filthiest goal that England can see in that era because a few months later in a friendly against Sweden Zlatan scores that outrageous bicycle kick that's just close and the former AC Milan and Barcelona striker wasn't done with that scoring a fourth in added on time he's out of his box he had to add it bad but he didn't back his incredible improvisation that is ridiculous isn't it I don't know if Joe Hart's done that much wrong no he's the he's a pretty bad he mistimed his jump so we end up losing that game 4-2 to Sweden Zlatan scores all four of Sweden's goals yeah it was just one of those goals that even though we lost, everyone was just like, yeah, fair enough.
06And we were sure. Yeah. It was also that, that summer 2012 was the weird interlude of Team GB at the London Olympics. Had a very, had a very Eurosport vibe to it. Yeah. Didn't feel like football. Yeah. So, so it's pretty underwhelming on the pitch, but off it is where the action really happens. In particular, for Micah Richards, who sounds like the time of his life at this tournament. He said, it was the party of all parties what I imagine when you go to uni when you're in halls we went to training come back to the village they were up till 4am but different campuses Team GB in one block Brazil, France there's a massive big room full of condoms honestly God I was on fire there's multiple gold medals one of the best times of my life it was incredible I mean as a professional footballer surely you clean up because we were discussing this on our Winter Olympics episode that obviously it's a shag fest but there's a hierarchy right?
00yeah the sprinters sprinters are at the top yeah you've got like Usain Bolt Michael Rich is probably not far off the Usain Bolt level yeah quite fame centric but then you've sort of got your shot putters your shot putters they sort of keep to themselves yeah who else is hammer throw yeah I think the the heavy throwers archers yeah archers I don't know I don't know the shooters I feel like they keep to themselves yeah they drink and port together and stuff what else is sexy Swimmers are sexy I think Yeah Swimmers Don't know what's going on With the newer one Like the sort of BMX I think They're great The horse riders And the shooters They stick Keep to themselves To themselves Equestrians You probably get the odd Quite hot horse Sorry I'm making a scene Yeah Whereas a footballer Surely you're up there I guess it's quite nice Because whichever sport you're in You've then got the other countries So you've always got some There's a clear hierarchy Yeah You've got a feel for that One skateboarder That was like 50 Yeah He's going to have to look at other sports hopefully how do you think the ping pong boys are doing I think yeah they're not great they're hanging out they're gaming good party tricks you know good at beer pong yeah back in the qualifiers though Roy is trying to inspire a bit of bit of fire in his team though I'm not entirely sure they always get his his approach to things so during half time of this qualifier against Poland he decides to spend 12 of the 15 minutes of the halftime telling a long-winded joke to Chris Smalling about a monkey that gets sent to space.
3612-minute joke. It's like a whole bit. I'd be exaggerating. Stand-ups get less. 12 minutes. Do you want to hear the joke? Yeah, let's hear the joke. Apparently this joke's very popular at NASA. Is it 12 minutes long? I'll give you the abridged version. So, NASA decided they finally send a man up in a capsule after sending only monkeys up in earlier missions. Fire the man and the monkey into space. The intercom crackles. Monkey? Fire the retros. Little later. Monkey? Check the solid fuel supply. Later still. Monkey? Check the life support systems for the man. The astronaut takes umbrage and radios NASA.
16Look, guys, when do I get to do something? NASA replies. In 15 minutes, feed the monkey. Is that it? That's the joke. I don't get that. you know when they're like we've found this the oldest joke from like 400 BC and it makes no sense yeah I think it's similar for the science joke isn't it but what's the joke the joke is that the bloke's useless he's useless really right and anyway basically the reason Hodgson was telling this joke was because he wanted to emphasise to Chris Smalling that he needs to pass to Andros Townsend so I think in that in that in that line up Chris Smalling is the astronaut Andros Townsend is the monkey you um it's a you think you can just you just just tell him directly it's half time we haven't got much time just tell him past and just we're one nil down against poland what are you on about yeah he's been like managing in scandinavia it sounds like a sort of like scandy idiom that doesn't quite doesn't quite translate but yeah it's the question like smooly again i'm just sounds like blank expression i had a really funny story about um roy hodgson which kind of like testament to the fact that he's got like a sense of humor actually i'll tell the story and then you can determine whether it was accidental or intended or not but we um ages ago was recording a podcast with um chris richards the uh crystal palace center back and um after the recording had finished there's a bit of an awkward moment where you've got to wait for all the files to upload because it was like an online recording so you make a bit of small talk and i was like oh chris i'm a i'm a big fulham fan like what was it like to work on the roy and then he just sort of like started laughing and he was like he's from the south of America but I'm not going to do the accent but he was like yeah Roy was old school he's really old school I remember one time I was in a training session and he pulled me aside because I wasn't doing something right and he was like Christopher you need to be following them stone your position you're getting drifted here and there and everyone's watching him give Chris this bollocking and he said halfway through he just lets out the biggest fart but maintains eye contact with me the whole time.
23And he says, I've got like, Jordan and I absolutely pissing himself. Nathaniel Clyde is on the floor. None of them can believe what they've seen or heard. And then he was like, I swear to God, he was doing it to like test my mental strength to see whether he was going to break me. But I just thought it was such a funny story. We're sure Roy is in complete control of that. That's what I wanted to ask. Is that old school or just old? He's lost control of those.
52he's incontinent did Chris Richard suffer any ill effects as a result of the fart well he's gone from strength to strength in his palace career he's one of these I was thinking if he did inhale any of those fumes and it caused any sort of lung issues then he'd probably want to speak to a lawyer because that was an accident that happened in the workplace and if he is If you are listening, Chris, and you'd like to get in touch with someone, I do know exactly the people you should speak to. And that is injury lawyers for you. Because I'm sure that that's the kind of thing that they'd cover. Inhaling sort of toxic fumes or gases.
31Any accident that wasn't your fault. I mean, you could argue that Roy had an accident that wasn't his fault. It's just old. But I don't think you can claim against Fulham FC. Or Crystal Palace. Crystal Palace. Against Steve Parrish. You've made me flatulent in this job. yeah the canteen but yeah they're rated 4.8 on Trustpilot 4.8 out of 5 on Trustpilot injury lawyers for you yeah they're the number one for if you need to make a claim against someone no win no fee yeah no win no fee so Chris may as well give it a go give it a go it's an unusual case but I'm sure they've got a lawyer I'm sure Victor the Lion will yeah Leon that's what you are and Roy likewise you might as well give it a go sue the see the dinner ladies at palace there's a lot of beans in that dish that's another thing talking of beans so my sister used to work at this cafe um near where my parents live and roy uh used to i think he still does live around there but he used to come in every day and order the same thing which was beans on toast well then how are you surprised you're flatulent he was like every day every day he'd come in and he'd have a cup of tea and beans on toast Chris needs to give that bit of evidence to the lawyers because they'll run with that exactly he's negligent with his breakfast Leon and Victor will make short work of that put Roy in the dock give him a poke yeah so what if you've had an accident that wasn't your fault injurylawyers4u.co.uk but they do qualify for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil everyone was very excited for this World Cup but I mean that was a great run South Africa and Brazil Yeah, that's a fun location.
15Anyway, it's, you know, England fans, we might not have the best squad, but we're excited. And in the warm-up games, Roy Hodgson decides to blood another promising youngster at right back, Mr. John Flanagan. Who, again, not necessarily the level the England fans are used to. But actually, John has some fans out in Brazil where they're going, including the great Cafu, who around this time anoints John Flanagan as his natural successor. He flies to England, watches him at Anfield, and tips him to win as many trophies as I did. John Flanagan. Yeah, it doesn't quite work out. What is it in particular?
Read the full transcript
52Is it his ruthless desire to win? Yeah, he sort of tracks back. He's good in attack and defence. It doesn't quite go the cafe route for John Flanagan. He ends up retiring at 29 after a stint with the Danish side HB Koga. But yeah, he was, I should say, because it's on his Wikipedia, he was named in Garth Crooks' Team of the Week in 2010 once. if that's making it onto your wikipedia page then you haven't your career's not lived up to expectations actually Roy doesn't even take John to the world cup he ends up on the standby list and without him they do struggle it's England's worst world cup performance in a long time they go out in two games it's the first time they've gone out in the group since 1958 obviously they lose to Italy in the Amazon do you remember?
38in Manaus a game that's mainly remembered for Balotelli scoring and for Joe Hart screaming at a poor ball boy. You remember this? Yeah, I remember this. I go. Hey! Hey! Hey! Give me that fucking ball! Give me that fucking ball! It's right next to the mic as well. I was thinking it's picked up perfectly. Why is he so angry? I mean, he's running out of time, yeah. And then they play Uruguay where I think they really slag Suarez off in advance, like quite openly. And Suarez proceeds to score two goals to put England out, including the winner which leads to well sorry including the second which leads to a great video of Roy Hodgson watching it do you remember this video?
20Roy sort of watching it with half a smile and then the goal goes in and he just goes ah bows his head in resignation it looks like he's like bird watching yeah anyway he keeps his job after that that was that was such a shit World Cup Sterling was our only good player do you remember Sterling was really good Costa Rica topped the group yeah that was a tough group Italy, England Costa Rica were good at that point as well I think England draw with Costa Rica but it's already a dead rubber going out in two games that is shit you'd think maybe Roy would get sacked but he says I don't have any intention to resign we've got a still from the press conference which I think might be the image of this episode on podcast iconic image isn't it it's almost a bit Kenneth Williams a bit ooooh matron isn't it Alan Cummins sort of 70s comedy.
11Am I going to resign? But anyway, yeah, so Roy does cling on. I think they should have moved on at that point, but he'd only had a couple of years. Yeah. And I guess, who are you going to get at that point? No one. I don't think he did. Anybody really want the job of a poison chalice at that point? So he sticks around and he's phasing out some more big names. There's still no recall for Ashley Young, who he dropped. I don't think Ashley Young plays an England game under Roy Hodgson. And poor old Ashley, as more problems when the Premier League season starts right after the World Cup and a bird poos in his mouth.
47Remember this? By Young. Yeah, when he went through a little flick. He got a slow-mo version as well. I thought he could have taken that on himself. If you're just listening, he's sort of shouting instructions at someone and then you see this big globule of white just lands on his lip. He's always denied that it was bird poo, right? Yeah, he says, he just says it never happened. He thinks the image was doctored. Right. he thinks it's all a big conspiracy and actually did you know that that pigeon killed itself in mysterious circumstances not long after yeah it was on TV if you watch it again I've got a friend whose theory is that basically a bird does poo but it's behind him and at the exact same time he's got some spit in his mouth so you see it if we just watch it there I think the bird pooed in his mouth apparently his United teammates start putting a fake pigeon in his locker.
42But yeah, Ashley Young, he's always denied it. We're going to flash it up at the end of the episode like Jerry Adams or say nothing. Ashley Young has always denied being a member of the bird poo swallowing community. He said, even my wife and kids turn around and say, yeah, but the bird pooed in your mouth. No, it didn't. It kind of makes me think that I believe, Ashley, because there's no shame in it. You know what I mean? Yeah, but it's annoying. I know what you mean. Would you admit it? yeah if it happened to me it was caught on camera and it did happen I'd be like yeah that was unfortunate wasn't it meant to be good luck well it quite possibly cost him a recall from Roy Hodgson he refused to pick Ashley Young despite his form for Man United in case he contracted avian flu he's quite avian looking Roy he's probably if anyone's going to get avian flu he's like a sort of owl wise old owl wise well anyway the wise old owl while Ashley Young is swallowing down some guano the wise old owl is preparing England for the Euros in France.
40Another good host nation. It's Euro 2016, so this is right after Leicester win the league. So you've got to have Vardy. In he comes. A lot of excitement about that. Vardy's on fire. England, they actually do so badly in the group, I've forgotten. They draw with Russia and Slovakia, and they only scrape through, thanks to that Daniel Sturridge injury time winner against Wales, who topped the group. That was actually a poor group. Yeah, Wales had a blind at that. Yeah, they were class. semi-finals yeah you'd have to say England overall was shit I mean Roy his backroom team he's got Gary Neville in there who's fresh from being sacked by Valencia and apparently I heard it was Gary Neville's idea to have Kane on corners which was the thing that everyone was complaining about and I watched an interview and he said well it had to be him or Rooney and you're like why is it the two guys I want attacking corners in the box so yeah apparently everyone else was shit at set pieces because Kane was taking free kicks as well yeah yeah that I can see but I think I want yeah anyway if there's any chance of a header in the box I think I want Harry Kane obviously yeah um Roy and Gary's next bright idea is to ask Captain Wayne Rooney to sit down Jamie Vardy and tell him to tell his wife to calm down so apparently there was there was a bit of like frustration in the England camp that Becky Vardy was in the media a lot giving loads of interviews and that she was also she was constantly on FaceTime to Jamie Wayne Rooney said it was like she was there with the squad at any moment and Jamie would be on FaceTime to her.
09And I think there's some suggestion that she's like leaking stuff from the camp to the tabloid. Just leave the phone on the table. But anyway, Wayne Rooney has to sit him down. He is captain, but I sort of think Roy could have done it himself. Yeah, also because, was this pre-Wag and the Christie's? Okay, yeah. Do you think this was the incident that started the sort of resentment from Becky to Colleen over the years? Yeah, because there's some text between Jamie and her where she's like, what a fucking arsehole. So maybe... Rooney said later, it was such an awkward moment. He had to testify about it in the wake of the Christy Trump.
48But I also, like, cannot imagine Wayne Rooney having to deliver that kind of, like, awkward... Yeah. ...comfare on him. Listen, Jamie, I've got to talk to you about the FaceTime. They'll let her calm down. So the vibe's not amazing at the England camp, but England do make it out of the group, and they learn that they are facing Iceland. They're pretty relaxed. Iceland has a population of 330 ,000. It's their first time in the tournament. You know, Roy's thinking, I'm not too worried. In fact, Roy is so relaxed that he, quite famously now, decides that he's not going to go and bother watch Iceland play in their final group game.
25He is instead going to take a sightseeing boat trip down the River Seine, his justification being that his assistant manager, Ray Lewington, had never seen Paris. So good. It's one of our favourite moments. I love this. Imagine them having a little candlelit dinner up on deck. A nice bottle of Bordeaux. It's lovely. Absolutely lovely, Roy. Another glass, Roy? They're chatting the night before and Ray's like, I've actually never seen Notre Dame. You've never seen Notre Dame Cathedral? Right, you must. You simply must. The thing is, I was like, I would get this a little bit more if they were in like Rio de Janeiro and it's like you never know when Ray's going to get another chance to be in Rio it's like Paris it's like two hours on Eurostar why don't you guys stay on after the tournament Roy and Ray were right double act they're famously best friends they used to go on holiday together all sorts yeah there was one of the first stories that we did on the upshot wasn't it about they we just imagine them rubbing each other in sun cream like Roy I think the line was Roy rubbing factor 50 into Ray's beefy shoulders just imagine them yeah I think the idea was they're in an all inclusive and they're working their way through the list another beer way we can all move on to something a little bit stronger we're settling in for the evening lovely image so they go on holiday together yeah I think they're still really good pals that's nice was it just the two of them on this boat I don't know if Gary Neville got the invite.
04Of course, while Roy and Ray see all the sights, England do lose to Iceland on the pitch in that infamous defeat. So they go up 1-0, Rooney scores that penalty, and then it all goes wrong from there and they lose their heads. We've got Steve McLaren's reaction to the winning goal here. He's watching it on TV, on Sky Sports News, I think. The only thing that they have got is the big boy up front, Sigurdsson. who really, Sig Thorsen... Oh, my word.
39George and I were discussing before we looked at the video, there's a frame where Steve McLaren's got a little smile. Isn't that? Yeah. I mean, there is something quite fitting about maybe England's worst ever manager being commentating, or not commentating, but like watching the moment that probably surpassed his line. I'm off the hook. Yeah, you're a bit relieved, aren't you? Can we see if we can find that frame? Yeah, I think there's a frame where you just, just a little like the corner of the mouth turns. That's it, that's it, that's it, that's it there. Got a little twinkle in his eye. So, yeah, they're out to Iceland, which is, I think, still considered England's worst defeat ever.
20Some people say the USA in 1950. Of course, I remember it, remember it well. Different reasons. Yeah. And what I hadn't remembered is that this is four days after Brexit. it so the vote had been yeah it's june 2016 vote been four days earlier yeah and then this it was right after glastonbury i remember because i was watching it yeah yeah i was in in berlin at the time and i remember watching it on the on the street and people remember people literally just belly laughing when they find a whistle when the whole of europe just ignited if you're not english is so good yeah yeah so good um roy resigns immediately within an hour i think he's he's gone.
58You have to. So English football is at its lowest ebb. Disaster. But amid the rubble emerged an unexpected savior. A man who could restore England's reputation, rebuild the relationship with the fans and the media and take England to the brink of glory. Big Sam. You forget about that, don't you? I forgot I was there until we sat down to plan this. yeah so he's sort of seen as the uninspiring but least bad option isn't he yeah he's like the team that you you'll relegate relegation fodder squad you get him in to save him it was kind of it was like the national equivalent of that just keep England up at all costs he was above 30th in the ranking you can sort of you can see the logic behind it because like after that tournament it's like we are just a shit team we think just damage limitation yeah yeah or just like just play play bad football get results yeah just get us through it there was something very Mike Bassett about the appointment as well because Ben was like oh Big Sam after 30 years as a manager he's finally getting his chance and then what happened there yeah I think it was a sense of like look we didn't do it with Harry we tried the foreign coach we tried the like Steve McLaren young gun we tried the old hand like let's just do the Mike Bassett thing yeah Big Sam's appointed I think it's met with a collective groan mainly well everyone's got opinion some are up for it including west ham manager slavin billich who's asked about it before a game and he says the players will respect him he's a big man he's big sam you see him on the television he fills the screen you're looking you're looking for the board with the sponsor's name behind where have they gone you can't see them village was jokes when he yeah that's good it was really funny he's probably explained that more than he needed to yeah but there was that really funny press conference it was after an england game and they asked him some benign question about who england should be playing on the wing and he just goes i don't care he does a podcast now like a jake humphrey style pod doesn't he like a high performance yeah he does that was he interviewed um zlatan abrirovich on it and he was talking about his like elite mindset and zlatan the example that zlatan chose to to use to illustrate that was the time that he was chasing a PB on the treadmill and shot himself and carried on.
23Didn't want to lose the good start. Just shit myself. This is what takes you to the top. This is what separates us from the others. Is that like the Balkan equivalent of Jake Humphrey necking water at 5am? Just shit yourself on the treadmill. You don't want to be stood behind that treadmill either because they'd be like... Treadmill's actually the wildest place to shit yourself. Spewing off them.
47so Big Sam does manage England in a 1-0 win over Slovakia which is a pretty good result in that era isn't it had we not drawn with them in the Euros yeah they had that was it Hamzik wasn't it oh yeah Spiky Head yeah it was really good so it's looking good he's won his first game and then just three weeks later the Telegraph publish a bombshell article football for sale in which Big Sam is pictured in quite a grainy photo sitting down with some undercover reporters who were posing as Asian businessmen. This is mainly remembered for the supposed pint of wine he was drinking, which I insist is a beer.
28Yeah, it's got a head. It's funny, though, with a pint of wine. It's obviously funny. And it does, because of the colour of the photo, and it's not much head on the beer. It could be one. So, yeah, maybe he was having a pint of wine. It'll certainly explain what came out of his mouth not long after. So basically, the accusation that he's telling them how to get past these FA rules on third-party ownership of players, the telegraph actually later retract part of it. But he's also, he spills a few embarrassing details. He slags off Roy Hodgson. He says, you'd send them all to sleep, Roy. Why? He hasn't got the personality for it.
02He says, Gary Neville, Hodgson's assistant, should have been told to sit down and shut up, which may be valid. there's various other indiscretions and obviously the FA don't take kindly they sack him so I guess they think he's corrupt but actually I don't know if he was definitely shown to be corrupt but he was shown to be indiscreet and that is the end of Big Sam he lasted just 67 days yeah it's got to be the shortest England tenure 100 % win record there you go him and David Nugent together unbelievable record I mean there is the counterfactual how would Big Sam have done in the 2018 to 24 era I don't know if he's getting six years no I think he was a he was a sort of a bit of a palate cleanser wouldn't he I don't think what you think it would have been one I mean unless he was successful I just can't see Big Sam actually getting anything of that out of that England it would be a very different England just lump it up top to the big man 4-4-2 yeah 2018 World Cup semi-final versus Croatia is he getting a result where Southgate failed I don't know Big Sam is not known for his in-game tech I don't know I haven't watched much Big Sam Croatia just controlled the midfield after England took the lead and I just think Big Sam's not letting that happen what could have been eh maybe I don't know just on what he was saying about Roy Hodgson not having the personality for it I think Roy's got quite a lot of personality yeah that was mean yeah that was mean but yeah I like that counterfactual that somewhere in a parallel universe Atomic Kitten are singing Big Sam you're the one yeah he would have if England had a run under him it would have been so fun because I really like Gareth Southgate but he's very earnest you're gonna arise Sir Big Sam Sir Big Sir Big anyways of course it's not well of course Big Sam leaves and everyone I remember literally everyone's like there is no one and so in comes Gareth Southgate promoted from the under 21s can you remember the mood when he actually came in and I was like it was the job no one wanted uninspiring appointment everyone at the time was like oh god really Gareth no one wants it who cares yeah but of course that all panned out very differently but that is one for another episode but for now we are at the end so I guess we leave England at an even lower ebb I was just depressing going back through all those wasn't it because you get all tournaments no matter how shit England are you think oh this could be it and then it just consistently tanked that is the thing I feel like we still always had a bit of hope at every one of these tournaments despite knowing how bad they were I hope that gets you isn't it alright well we'll see you next time thanks George thank you cheers fellas be back on for the Roy Hodgson deeper dive thanks Zach thanks a lot thanks for listening to the Upshot sponsored by Injury Lawyers for You the personal injury lawyers who fight for you
