In short
Part two of a podcast series on American daredevil Evel Knievel, covering his rise after going solo, major stunts (Grand Canyon attempt, Caesar’s Palace fountain jump, later injuries), his clashes with the Hells Angels, and the build-up to his planned mile-long Snake River Canyon jump using a rocket-powered SkyCycle.
Guest backgrounds
Horatio Gould joins as co-host/guest; he’s a writer/researcher associated with The Upshot (the episode references Lance Murdoch and Stuart Barker via the show’s research context).
Key claims
Knievel’s first solo jump succeeds (14 cars), then his fame explodes after a televised 15-car jump on ABC. His Grand Canyon permit is withdrawn after he builds a 200-foot ramp and announces the plan. After a catastrophic Caesar’s Palace fountain jump, he’s comatose 29 days and later walks with a permanent limp due to an 18-inch steel rod. He becomes a media star, sells massive toy volumes, and escalates stunts again, culminating in the SkyCycle plan.
Notable examples
14-car solo jump; televised 15-car ABC jump; Grand Canyon 200-foot ramp and jet-wing bike plan; Caesar’s Palace fountain jump (141 feet) ending in a neck injury; Hells Angels brawl at Cow Palace; SkyCycle rocket-jet attempt over Idaho’s Snake River Canyon.

1:54Because from here it looks quite I know it's Yeah but that is It's pretty like
1:57Horatio Gould:I think especially like the Smithies fancy dress. I don't know what they put in the polyester. It's very flammable. It feels like something horrible happened to make it. Like it feels like there's been some real abuse in the production line. In the supply chain. Yeah, there's something. I tell you what, you wouldn't want to wear that on a stunt because it's very flammable. Yes. Oh, is it? Because it feels like it's coated in a chemical as well. I don't know. Naked flame around that. Yeah. Right. So where we left everyone at the end of part one, Bobby Knievel had put his insurance scams, bank robbing and carousing behind him.
2:27Horatio Gould:and become Evil Knievel, America's most exciting stuntman. Evil. And he's just ditched. My name is Evil. Evil. He's just ditched his crew and gone solo. So this is Robbie Williams to take that sort of moment. Yeah, and now the drug use. Quite equivalent, actually. Yeah. Yeah, so he spends the next year driving all over the country, putting on these solo shows, basically anywhere it will take him, mostly racetracks. and it's really a solo operation at this point. So Evil's building the ramps. He does all the promotion for it. He emcees on the mic during the shows and then does the jumps as well.
3:07That is quite endearing, I think. Yeah, so it's a one-man band and he decides that, you know, because it's just him, these shows need to be even more risky, even more spectacular.
3:17Horatio Gould:Right. And just where we ended the last part, he jumped 13 cars and he'd ended up in hospital for five months. so naturally for his first solo jump he decides to do 14 cars yeah you gotta top it but you couldn't make 13 is the problem exactly but I mean that's part of the appeal people are coming because they want to see you fuck up isn't that the flaw in his thing is that you always have to do more cars yeah once you've nailed it it's just not that impressive anymore a bit like that Mondo DePlantis the pole vaulter guy keeps doing it but he's doing it for the cash he gets 100 grand every centimetre well it's sort of like Bonnie Blue as well Like Bonnie Blue couldn't do anything less than a thousand guys.
3:57Horatio Gould:Yeah, it's just not. Because she also, she didn't just do a thousand, she did a thousand and fifty seven. Oh, really? Which is like just showing why she's a fucking, is the GOAT. Like her monster mentality of just like winning. She's like Ronaldo, but in the atmosphere. Yeah, because she hasn't done the Mondo DeFantis thing. She could just do a thousand and she's like, I'm going to do another fifty seven. Yeah, while we're here. Yeah. Or was it an estimate? Was it like you get. No, it wasn't. It wasn't so big. You had to weigh them. It's like counting money. historians disagree with estimates.
4:27Horatio Gould:Bonnie Blue born between 11 hundred. Some people think she was a composite character of various folk figures.
4:38So yeah, this first solo jump, he jumps 14 cars and he lands it. He does it successfully. Love it. And he sort of, at this point, his notoriety in Northwestern America is growing, but he's still kind of struggling to make ends meet really uh his young family are traveling around with him on the road and it's a pretty hand-to-mouth existence so they're sleeping rough on the side of the road bathing in rivers but it's not gonna last because in 1967 evil gets his big break when one of his stunts is televised on abc and he clears 15 cars he does it he does it
5:26Horatio Gould:right here he goes takes off oh fuck it one of the cars quite high that was amazing but part of me is like i could do that yeah it looked really easy i've got the internet way better shit you have to remember not many channels back then yeah yeah that's pretty amazing yeah yeah yeah and it's that was a big deal it's televised on tv and his star is really rising and he carries on doing successful events after this but he realizes that if he's going to keep his audiences excited he's going to have to jump over something other than cars right bonnie blue pro bonnie blue yeah exactly the bonnie blue conundrum um and he's sort of racking his brains over what what could he do next right and then one night on a drunken bender in montana he has a brainwave he'll jump the biggest gap of all right the grand canyon right um he said that this idea came to him because he's just like getting pissed in this bar necking montana mary's his favorite drink these this uh beer mixed with tomato juice which and he sees on the wall a calendar with a picture of the grand canyon and I think somebody says I don't know you should jump there you should jump there and initially he's kind of laughing it off and you know he thinks it's a bit of a mad idea but after Montana Mary after Montana Mary the idea clarifies in his head and he decides he's going to do it the tomato juice went to his brain the tomato juice yeah it does it you know that's why they give it to you on planes exactly it's true yeah and he then goes on live TV and announces that this is his plan he's going to jump the Grand Canyon and begins making preparations for it.
7:07So his plan is that he's going to build a 200-foot high ramp and a bike with a custom jet engine and wings to fly, basically, over this thing. Right.
7:18Horatio Gould:Just knock it up himself. Yeah, I mean, he's still pretty much a one-man band at this point, so just get a knock-off jet engine from somewhere. Obviously, he needs to get permission to do this. Get us in touch with the Department of Interior, the council, essentially. yeah he run the Grand Canyon some cancel yeah I mean the Department of Interior says yes don't know what the Indians thoughts were they'd already given up the gift centre and yeah but they so they initially say yeah he can do this jump and he starts preparing for it but then a few months before the scheduled date they withdraw his permission I think because they realise that he's serious about doing this jump which I quite like the idea that they were just playing along with him up to this point just humouring him oh you're being serious yeah he starts building the ramp he's like you fucking isn't it like but in the trailer for this film that would be the moment where he's like you want to jump the Grand Canyon what in cinema yeah how wide is the Grand Canyon like miles I guess it varies yeah it varies I don't know what I mean yeah this is what I mean the Grand Canyon's a huge area right there's not like isn't it like the size of the front yeah maybe not quite that big it's very big the very narrow he's doing the top of it yeah Where it starts.
8:34Yeah, so his dreams of a canyon flight are over for now.
8:39Horatio Gould:And so instead, he heads to a place where there are no pesky permits and rules. No red tape. No red tape. A place where the only thing that counts is entertainment. 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Las Vegas, baby. Whoa. Viva Las Vegas. it seems like Vegas is the kind of place that was built with Evel Knievel in mind yes and this is a very different Las Vegas to the one we know today you know this is long before the like god awful EDM pool parties and like the hangover movies and like volume addled Wyoming grandmas just sinking the savings in a slot machine we're in 1966 this is the glory days of Las Vegas how long has it been a pleasure very new so Caesar's Palace has opened this year and is that That's the most famous hotel in Las Vegas.
9:30Horatio Gould:At the time, yeah. I guess it still is because it's like, you know, visually just quite iconic. I think the casinos had opened already. I think this might be the first one that's like gimmicky. And so Caesars had taken Vegas up a notch. Right. And apparently, so it's launch party. They spent a million dollars, which again, this is 67. Right. It's worth a lot more now. The million dollars went on, among other things, it had the largest ever order of Ukrainian caviar, two tons of filet mignon 140 kilos of Maryland crab meat 50 ,000 glasses of champagne and apparently you were greeted by cocktail waitresses in Greco-Roman wigs who would greet you by saying welcome to Caesar's Palace, I am your slave right, charming so it's like, I think they said our idea was we want you to feel like a Roman emperor which like, you know you hear that now and you're like, all that really means is there's like a little bit of detail on the menu it was more like sort of secret cinema commitment to it back then right right right slavery yeah including the slaves it's weird they focused on that bit yeah unsurprisingly Evel Knievel sees this and he wants a piece of that yeah and so he decides that his next stunt should be him jumping over these already iconic fountains outside Caesar's Palace which I didn't find it doesn't sound that amazing but they are pretty high these fountains we'll watch the jump in a minute are they the ones that spring up yeah really high what would be better is like do the fountains are they constantly spraying or yeah I think it would be better if like you know the fountains that go up and down and he had to time it that would be oh not get wet that was an extra element of risk yeah is it based on the Trevi fountain probably yeah I hadn't thought about that but it's all very authentic right right right right down to the cocktail waitresses yeah anyway first in order to do this stunt you know no one in Vegas knows who the fuck he is he's still pretty new yeah he was on TV but he's not this megastar yet.
11:23Horatio Gould:First, he's got to persuade the eccentric millionaire owner of Caesar's Palace, a man called Jay Sarno. Sounds trustworthy. Yeah. And, you know, I think like most of us would sort of ring up and timidly be like, oh, Mr. Sarno, would you mind awfully if I were to jump over your fountain? Can I jump over your fountain? And he'd be like, get out, get the hell out of my casino. Yeah, yeah, yeah. But Evel Knievel is a wily fox. Yeah. And so he comes up with a plan which to any budding salespeople take note of this. so he basically he poses as journalist and starts phoning jay sarno's office being like uh hello this is mr william hewitt from abc news i hear that evil kenevil is jumping over your fountains and apparently the first few times jay sarno's just like who the hell's evil kenevil like stop calling you know it's just like really annoyed by it but they keep phoning up and being like oh mr so can i have a quick interview about the forthcoming jump and eventually he's kind of curious and then to double down evil's like okay i need to look legit so i'm going to pose as like the businessman who run evil can evil enterprises corporation so he phones them and he decides that the best way to do this is to pose as a jewish businessman right because according to his biographer he admired the jewish community for their financial skills well it depends what the depiction of the jewish businessman is a lot of different ways you can go with it if it's just like maybe a kipper on maybe or even just slight accent but if it's maybe a rhinoplasty.
12:46Horatio Gould:I should imagine it was quite through one. With Mr. Shelley Bignall's Goldman calling yourself. There's like a Yiddish word like shtelty or something that means like really like It's like Bradley Cooper in the maestro. Yeah, really OTT fake Jewishness. So did he actually go in and dressed up in character? I don't know if he's in costume. I don't know if that was like right but I think it was like phone calls doing like in New York right right right what is it like a New York Jewish act pastrami bagel yo I'm just with my mensch here we was wondering would you like to make some gold that kind of vibe I think and I imagine it was quite laid on quite thick but he does get them eating so it works Jay Sarno you know he also admires Jewish businessmen for their financial skills being from Missouri and Evil explains what happens at this meeting he says so I go to this sort of knock on his door and the secretary lets me into these big offices and she ran straight to the back office door and yells, it's him!
13:47Horatio Gould:It's him! And he comes running out of his office and says kid, where you been? I've been looking all over for you. It's a different time, isn't it? Yeah, and what a bit of salesmanship. Yeah, I mean this is how your grandparents expect you to get a job. When you buy a job. A scheme. Yeah, any recruiters listening, more of that. anyway so he gets the gig Sarno agrees he actually quite likes the sound of all this it's more sort of you know Vegas is doing a lot of shows from day one and so the day comes around they choose New Year's Eve 1967 so I guess we are in the Vietnam War aren't we JFK dead JFK dead yeah long gone 65 innocent is gone and so you know people Americans they need heroes they need new heroes and so 25 ,000 people show up outside Caesars Palace which is a lot actually it's not a stadium no apparently Evil Knievel claims that he draws a bigger crowd than Sinatra could get in Vegas which I don't know if I believe that but anyway in preparation you know you think you'd be like let's nail this but he doesn't even bother studying the physics of the jump like you know like the sort of speed only the angle of the jumps he's like I'll just do it by the seat of my pants right he apparently never does the physics that is mental yeah but that's part of the charm isn't it yeah he's actually not like a cold technician he really is yeah he's not he's a vibesman that would spoil I would spoil the magic for the crowd as well.
15:09But was like Houdini that's a physicist. He's not even that skilled.
15:12Horatio Gould:It seems like he's not even particularly skilled. He's just braver than everyone else. He's just brave. It's just courage. Do you think like Houdini for example was probably like working stuff out for a long time before he then did it on stage? Yeah but also like you look at Baumgartner you know the guy who did the massive jump like that was just a that was a pro doing it and he was Austrian and he was just quite dull. Yeah it was just too scientific. And he just did it and he was like yeah it worked brilliant. I'm saying. But he's like evil would have no idea and be like, fuck it, here we go.
15:37Horatio Gould:Yeah, let's just, yeah. I reckon. It's sort of like the French guy who climbs towers with no ropes. Yes. Skyscrapers. But if you're trying to engage with it as a star, a lot of these, even people like Baumgartner, the fact that he's not, people have kind of forgotten about him in a way. Because he doesn't have the charisma. The charisma is, I could do it if I was brave enough. Not, you need to be brave enough. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Also, if you work out, it's actually not as bad as you think. I think, yeah, I think he's... You've got to make it feel like the only thing but difference between me and evil is that I'm a pussy and he's brave.
16:08Horatio Gould:But isn't that kind of the spirit of the age anyway? It's like people are just forming rock and roll bands. We're going to the moon just because, fuck it, it's there. Yeah, fuck it. It's hard. Let's do that. So I think it kind of fits. It's pretty fucking rock and roll. And so he lines up. It's a 141 foot jump, which is like an Olympic swimming pool. And he lines up. A lot of things are like Olympic swimming pool. funny that. So many things. or a football pitch. How long is a football pitch? 100 metres. That sounds quite shit, doesn't it? From the halfway line. Anyway, so he lines up and we've got some footage here.
16:49Horatio Gould:Let's watch it, shall we? Should we commentate in real time?
16:56Horatio Gould:At 2pm he began the jump. This is the jump over the fountains. Does he go through the walls? To me, it looks like he goes through them. He made that jump. It just seemed like he turned it. He was in the air. He lands, but he's come a couple of inches short. Oh, he's coming off. And he's flung from the bike, lands on his neck.
17:20Horatio Gould:It is a cliche to say like a rag doll, but that's exactly what it is. The bike's bouncing. The thing is, if he'd just done some basic... If he'd just stayed at home. but if he just hadn't done this silly jump, he'd be fine. Yeah. If he just had a few basic calculations, because look, he's only about six inches short. Yeah. I love how this is sort of like Russia have put a man in space and this is America's answer. This is our bloke. He does go through the fountains a bit, doesn't he? Yeah. Fuck. Right, so what happens to him? Well, it's painful. Right. He's comatose for 29 days. So it looks like he's dead.
17:58Horatio Gould:Right, right. Like he goes into his home, his family and friends are just like, that's it. but when he finally wakes he is a mega star we probably hit the big time now what was the reaction it really is guys passed out he wakes up I'm still here 29 years later what was the reaction to the crowd were they were they like I think stunned silence and then like cheers and like we love you evil but like fear he was motionless lying there scraped off the pavement straight to hospital you know your only way for getting up what doesn't kill you makes you stronger it's literally evil Your updates are like, oh, I've got to wait for the news tomorrow.
18:33Horatio Gould:It's like the COVID numbers. It's like 24 hour wait. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Time moves slowly. As soon as they moved on pretty quickly though, the crowd, they're just back into the slaves. Yeah, back to the slaves. Just having like grapes dropped into them. Drink a rubber or we move on. Do some gambling, would you? Yeah. Anyway, 29 days. The reason he's such a star is it's filmed. Obviously, we just watched it and it gets televised on national news everywhere. Right. So this one is, this is his viral moment. And this is when there's three channels, so if you're on TV, everyone knows. If you're on national TV, everyone knows.
19:04Horatio Gould:Yeah, it's really big. Apparently this clip was watched more than any film since JFK had been assassinated. Right. So it's the viral clip of The Age. It's the Willstone Raider. Charlie bit my finger. Yeah, I guess he's our evil Knieger. Yeah, it was true. But it's, yeah, I guess it's just constantly showing up. He's not faring too well after that jump, so he has to have an 18-inch steel rod inserted between his left femur and pelvis. I hate that. Meaning, yeah, it's painful when they do that, isn't it? Meaning that one leg is now an inch shorter than the other. So he always walks with a limp from now on.
19:39Horatio Gould:Hobbles. Yeah. Most of his body is metal by the end of his life. Right, right, right. But this is the first big bit of metal. He's got a permanent limp. He's in severe amounts of pain. But who cares? Because America is evil-knievel crazy. Yeah, of course. At last. Yeah, they certainly are. And the money is really beginning to flow in for him now. and he's making the most of it. So he spends 37 days in hospital, wakes up from this coma and when he emerges, he's holding a diamond encrusted cane. So obviously he has this limp now and he needs something. It could make him seem quite frail, but he turns it around into this symbol of extravagance, this diamond encrusted cane.
20:18The gold top of it has a motorcycle engraved into it. Amazing. Look at a picture of it now. So he claims that -
20:24Horatio Gould:That's the famous outfit there again. Yeah, there you go. That's what you wear. Almost identical. Good old Smithies. Yeah. I think that's where he got it from, actually. Yeah, it would be Smithies, yeah. So he actually claimed that this cane dated back to 1883 and it belonged to the mayor of Philadelphia, which is maybe unlikely because motorbikes hadn't been invented at that point. Could have been a proto-image of what a motorbike, you know. You know how like Leonidas. Penny Farthing. Oh, yeah, the helicopter. Yeah, it could be one of those. He's working out on the back of a cane. Yeah, he was.
20:56obviously he was a clever man so yeah I don't know exactly how old it was but it definitely did open up to contain six shots of wild turkey which was evil's favourite type of bourbon whiskey what do you mean? so the cane like you could open up the top of the cane and it was filled with whiskey fine fine fine you've seen those canes before they help drinks
21:22Horatio Gould:so what you pull out the top bit yeah you unscrew the top I watched him on like a chat show talk show where he's talking to them and he just unscrews it and pours himself a whiskey oh nice and they love it of course they do yeah can we look at the picture of him quickly because he's quite good looking I'd say he's a little bit older in the picture we're looking at I think he looks quite like Dracula yeah but he's got a bit of boyish good looks and actually what you can't see because he's squinting is he's got very powerful eyes yeah so yeah he's walking with this diamond encrusted cane and he starts wearing really extravagant outfits and hanging out in these really glitzy clubs, casinos.
22:02He also starts dating a string of different glamorous women. Yeah, I was going to ask,
22:06Horatio Gould:so in this 10-year period of the prostitutes, is this during this period? That was earlier, I think. Oh, right. That was sort of his coming of age. There are some stats on his shagging on that. Because that's when he didn't have that much money. That's what's kind of weird. He's just starting to make money. Yeah. And if he's out month by month with the injuries, if he's trying to make those numbers, it means every day he can walk, who's gone. Yeah, I think he needs to pay for it anymore. It's the great irony, isn't it? When he needed money. Yeah. So, you know, his star has never been higher, but Evil knows that he needs to keep jumping if he's going to avoid being just a flash in the pan.
22:40So after five months out recovering from that big nasty crash, he lines up what for him is a pretty measly jump of 13 cars, but he wipes out again and breaks another leg. so you know you wonder at this point is he is he past it will he ever reach the same heights again it will surprise you to hear that he is spending hundreds of thousands on medical bills at this point so yeah apparently throughout his whole career he spends three whole years in a hospital bed yeah
23:12Horatio Gould:it's a lot it's yeah it's kind of it's amazing he chalked up those brothel numbers considering yeah maybe bed sores bedside visits maybe yeah you think that's it yeah he's lying down already sexy nurse so yeah that winter of 68 69 he's out of action through injury right and when he finally makes his return summer of 69 right summer of 69 yeah revolution is in the air that's 68 isn't it oh is it 68 famously yeah anyway around that sort of time I mean I guess it's still in the air it's still in the air it's sort of leading the faint smell of revolution is lingering and when he comes back he finally debuts his famous white starred suit the one that you very nicely with confederate stars well they're just Americans they're Americans he also he also starts riding a white bike which has confederate flag or confederate stars on as well but the stars are just the amount I mean yeah but if he's got confederate flags on the bike I think the bike is quite a year to be doing that anyway so he now emerges with this confederate flag on his bike.
24:24And in January 1970, he organises a big event at the Cowles Palace in San Francisco. Get a better name for that venue.

24:33Horatio Gould:That's bullshit. That's a place to sell livestock. Maybe it's sort of how... That's why it's to up a shit place as opposed to down a good place. Or do you think they give it a shit name in the same way that it's called the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium while they wait for... It's to sort of alert people to the sponsorship opportunities. Right, yeah. Anyway, this event goes down in Evel Knievel folklore because it brings him face-to-face with his mortal enemies. It's a group that he's been throwing barbs at for years. Right. The Hell's Angels. I'm literally just reading The Hunter S. Thompson. I love that book.
25:11Horatio Gould:Have you read it? Is it good? I mean, I read it when I was sort of 19. Sure, sure. Which, the... It's quite a finalist. alright I won't read it quite nasty shit okay I'll steer steer clear of it I think you should put it down this is not what I signed up for it is good I don't know his mortal enemies well they're they're a big deal in America especially California right yeah yeah yeah and he I guess they're fighting over similar terrain of like you kind of think because they're like they're both obviously big bikers but it's like the American spirit bike yeah This town ain't big enough for the both of us.
25:50Horatio Gould:They blackmail the Rolling Stones into making them their security at their gigs. Right. Have you ever read about Altamont, the gig that went horribly wrong? Yes. The one at the end of the 60s. Yes, yeah. And also their one in London. If you've watched the video of the Hyde Park gig where the Rolling Stones do like two million people. Right, no. It's on YouTube. It's really good. But there's Hells Angels there, I guess. Are they English ones? And they've just got swastikas on them. They're doing security. Right. Not SIA badged. They seem scary. Yeah. So they're kind of like, I don't know. they sort of like a bit of a racket.
26:19They're just like a bit of a biker gang. They're kind of getting,
26:21Horatio Gould:they stick their oar in, you know. Yeah, so evil, evil, yeah. You think maybe they'd be kinder of spirits, but absolutely not. He's had this like kind of vendetta against them for a while. He just sees them as these no good criminals, which judging by part one of this series is a little bit rich. But anyway, he's publicly spoken about how he hates them for quite a long time. There's one quote he says, these guys are dogs. they belong in penitentiaries they're murderers they're thieves they're drug dealers I hate their guts and I hate what they stand for and I want everybody to know they are not accepted by motorcycle people we don't like them that's just the way it is right so it's fighting over the soul of what are the motorcycles giving us a bad name yeah exactly they do not represent the motorcycle community yeah just come on just jump over live sharks and yeah spend thousands of dollars at Dirty Mouth Mary's instead he's the soul of motorcycling I guess motorbikes are they sort of is it important to fight for the soul of them I guess they're quite a sort of symbolic thing right yeah is the motorbike an American invention or the Harley Davidson is the big yeah I don't know it becomes very American doesn't it because the Nazis had them didn't they yeah they did which fit I feel like British motorcycle gangs as well are very much modelling themselves they're a bit like it's just dad's getting out of hand yeah it's not much it's real ale and beards yeah what's the metal like a boy quite gentle pork yeah
27:55um yeah but they the the biker gags in the u.s are a bit more menacing and at this event the hells angels show up and evil is you know he's getting ready for the show we're getting ready for his jump he's circling around the audience revving his engine when in the middle of the floor one of the hell's angels comes out and stands in the middle of the floor and gives him the middle finger he flipped the goddamn bird flipped the bird
28:21Horatio Gould:yeah it's like you did there very impressively the American style which is like the thumbs out you know what I mean Stone Cold Steve Austin whereas I would go like that but that's more pointed this is more the American one is like the British one is like why don't you fuck off yeah the American one's like it lines up perfectly doesn't it yeah yeah you did an American one yeah it's a bit like that a scene in um what's it called that's the film in glorious bastards where they get caught out by doing the oh yeah yeah it's like if people if they had the hell's angels exposed himself as a dad from middle sex yeah real real elf fanatic member of camera um but anyway uh evil sees this hell's angel in the middle of the floor giving him a middle finger and this is his chance to finally give them their comeuppance and he speeds his bike at the bloke slides into him and sends him flying like a bowling pin and all hell breaks loose as the rest of the Hells Angels flood onto the floor trying to attack evil and according to him at this point 500 of his fans charge for the grandstand wielding wooden planks and this huge fight breaks out.
29:36His fans beat the shit out of these 15 Hells Angels
29:39Horatio Gould:right so they come out on top they do I mean they're they're vastly outnumbering the Hells Angels were they not guns they've got like chains don't they yeah they're pretty terrifying guys I was picturing them like hitting someone it's nasty because it's been so like parodied now it's kind of like silly but I think it probably was pretty terrifying yeah yeah yeah yeah Evil's boasting afterwards that three or four of the Hells Angels were in intensive care for months which is pretty so he sees this as like evidence of his popularity sure yeah yeah yeah and you know nowadays I think he would probably be charged with inciting a riot but instead and rightly so this is the 60s and evil is instead granted the key to the city of San Francisco and made honorary mayor for a day for a day is that like you can actually make decisions for a day you can fuck up the whole thing you can do a lot in a day let me jump the Grand Canyon again just real lawless America.
30:39Horatio Gould:Yeah, it's great. Anyway, all publicity is good publicity and the brawl catches the eyes of some Hollywood producers. Right. Because I guess people, first people are like, this guy's a one trick pony. He jumps, he falls. Then they're like, oh, there's a story. This guy's a three trick pony. Yeah. He fights. And so they decide to make a movie of his life called Evil's Life, Evil Knievel, which is not a shop. It's time to, can't find it. I was trying to watch some of it online. It must be. I think he plays himself. He definitely does in one movie. Like 8 Mile. Yeah. I don't know even the acting.
31:11Horatio Gould:It'd be more like Get Richard I Try. I've seen that one with 50 Cent. I haven't just seen the film. It's his 8 Mile movie. It's the same name. Is that he good? It's very enjoyable. I don't think he's like the best actor. Sure, sure. Probably better than Evil Knievel. I bet that film was proper rubbish. Yeah. But he's a Hollywood star. You know, all counts. And suddenly, cash is rolling in. He was making a bit before. Merch. But now it gets silly. Before the season even kicks off, soccer fans are already making predictions. Who wins the league? Who qualifies for Europe? And who's lifting the trophy at season's end?
31:43Horatio Gould:On Calci, America's number one prediction market platform. You're trading against peers in a live market, meaning there's no house. 33:29Horatio Gould:Which is everything. so according to the book by Stuart Barker that I recommended this includes lunchboxes pinball machines pillowcases bedsheets matching curtains rubbish bins tyre mounted radios baseball caps t-shirts thermos flasks belt buckles bicycles bedside lamps beach towels drinking straws and key rings I'd like some of these I've always wanted to do bedsheets for what Evil Knievel merch Upshot merch Evil Knievel would be cooler can we find any of this merch on like a Evil Knievel rubbish bin official merch Yeah. That's pretty good stuff. We've got the Dennis Rodman action figure. Is that official merch?
34:04Horatio Gould:Yeah, yeah, from the 90s. It's pretty good. So this is what the good thing about merch, I guess, is that it's kind of limited edition. Yeah. Whereas the evil stuff I found online, oh, there's a pinball machine. That's pretty cool. Also, this is like people just buy loads of fucking tap. Right, right. It's peak consumer culture. Fine, fine, fine. Yeah. It's like we all buy the same stuff. Everyone's got the same fridge. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Same evil Knievel bedsheets and bin. Yeah. But the biggest seller is of course the Evil Knievel toys because the main people who love him are kids and the action figures go absolutely wild.
34:34Horatio Gould:So from 1972 to 1977 the Ideal Toy Company sell 125 million dollars worth of Evil Knievel toys. So outsells Barbie and G.I. Joe combined. We're looking at one of them. It does look good. So does it do jumps? Yeah. I watched an advert for one that like it goes and it just does random flips. It was pretty cool. You know those adverts are. what's he gonna not always an accurate percentage yeah it's like when you see adverts for Hot Wheels and there's actual flames coming out of the car so it's always disappointing they said that my Furby would learn actual language off me yeah it's pretty cool what cut is he getting of this do you know big he's making millions I think he he makes tens of millions and also this is 70 so that's shit loads wasn't he boasting that he was the first actual human to have an action yeah after him because before there was like Superman and Barbie and stuff yeah he was the first and it is kind of tapping into that superhero like all sorts to be fair there wasn't tons of competition in the toy market so America's most popular toy in 1970 was Nerf the world's first indoor ball we're looking at pictures I mean I know Nerf is the foam guns yeah but let's start somewhere how did it take them until 1970 yeah so this is a foam ball it's a foam ball it's like what do we do we do foam that's what Nerf does they still do foam you've seen outdoor balls Get ready for the indoor.
35:56Horatio Gould:I guess it's indoor because it can't break shit. There's an advert for it here starring the Monkees. You know the band? Here we go. Hey, let's play ball. In the house? Sure. Hey, what are those things anyway? They're Nerf balls. Spongy balls. It doesn't hurt anything. Nerf balls. You've got your Nerf. That's amazing. I want an inside ball. Yeah. Fuck me. It works on me already. Anyway, so Evil is making a lot of money out of the toys. making shitloads out of motorcycle brands as well. He's doing endorsements for Harley, hotel chains, bicycles. Sponsored content. Yeah, sponsored cars. And he's flush with this new cash and gets straight away to spending it.
36:37Horatio Gould:So he splashes out on fleets of cars, yachts and boats. Buys the longest truck in the world. Two Learjets with his name on. He bought the second one so he could fly alongside in the first and admire the logo. Right. It's cash spunking time, isn't it? It's just silly. I mean he's making so much though that it's not yeah it's like maybe I'll burn some just for a laugh kind of thing he gets a custom designed mansion thigh length chinchilla coats so yeah all the cash is going up and flowing at one point he's photographed for a magazine shoveling heaps of cash into his personal bank vault right which kind of a throwback once again it's a Simpsons cartoon yeah yeah it's like the beauty era yeah he's also doing a lot of womanising sure so he claims to have slept with 2000 women and is his what's Linda saying?
37:23Horatio Gould:Well, all through this time they're still together. Is it just more like he's going to do what he's going to do? Yeah, I think it must be. As long as he's home for tea. Yeah, I don't think he's even home for tea. I think he's on tour a lot. Yeah, no one bothers to ask her but he does justify it publicly. He says, I think if a guy's married and he has a little sex with another woman he can kind of compare her with his wife and I've done that and I've still got the same wife. That means she's pretty goddamn good. It's kind of, there's a romance to it. It's a compliment. I'm trying to find to someone better my wife and I haven't.
37:52Horatio Gould:It's a compliment. Yeah, that's amazing. The fact that I'm still shagging these women shows you're better. That's how much I love you. That's amazing. He's a good salesman. He is. Just keeps on searching. There must be someone better Every time I come, it's just, nobody can even come close. Surely at some point I'm going to find someone. He also says that he slept with eight women in 24 hours to win a bet for a grand, which is... Eight women in 24... Yeah, I mean, I guess in the age of one, he blows these numbers and not... A lot of these things you've got to put yourself in the mindset of the 60s.
38:19Horatio Gould:Three channels. He did eight women. Well, I guess a man having to finish eight times, that's quite... So you couldn't get a male Bonnie Blue. Yeah. It's like it's... That would actually be more impressive. Yeah, well, of course. But how many times can he finish in a day? What is the world record? I don't know.
38:38Horatio Gould:What are we searching for? Most male ejaculations in 24 hours. Record. Do not click. So I guess that'd be a wanking thing, wouldn't it? Yeah, it's just easier. I want to see what the... Gives world record for most organisms. 16 in an hour. Some of those. He's faking it, some of them. Yeah, the male faking. It's just hot air coming out, isn't it? Oh my God. 16 in an hour. I must have slept for a week after that. It's like when you're really getting to the bottom end of the toothpaste tube. You're really just like... You have to use it. You've rolled it all the way down. That sounds like hell. Evil is not posting those numbers, but he's sleeping with a lot of women.
39:25Horatio Gould:And he says he has to hire bodyguards to keep overzealous female fans at bay. He claims that some... He's using bodyguards to filtrate the attractive ones, right? That's more like, you stop there. It's more proactive. You come through, you stop. It's not so much a defensive measure, is it? He claims that some men would send their wives or girlfriends to sleep with him just to be able to say that they'd done it. Right. Cucks. In the pure sense of the word. But also cucks weren't really known at this point. I don't know. I don't know your cuckoldry is like a medieval thing. Yeah, biblical. But yeah, I guess so.
40:00Horatio Gould:I think it was probably more, it's sort of, you know, pampas grass swinging. Yeah. I think you're probably getting quite a lot of it. Yeah, maybe. Free love. Yeah. It's a very macho thing, what he's doing, isn't it? Yeah. Yeah. But what is that meant who, what's the sort of psychological dynamic there? You want... It's more like you feel kind of pathetic and you're kind of turned on by how pathetic you feel. So a real man gets to fuck your wife. I'm not a real man. I just, yeah. Because Dennis Rodman says he gets asked constantly by blokes in public bathrooms. They'll be like, will you fuck my wife?
40:31Horatio Gould:Please. And he's like, oh. Fine. Go on. Didn't know he will continue those. Cucking the nation. So yeah, he's having a grand old time. Do you reckon someone like Neil Armstrong gets the same thing? Well, he was very pious, wasn't he? Yeah, very biased, very boring. Buzz Aldrin's a shagger. Maybe that's even more of a turn-on, is it? If you get Neil Armstrong. I mean, that's the most manly thing you can do, isn't it? Land on the moon. It is manly, but then it's also like a nerdy scientist as well. Yeah. Buzz Aldrin's a shagger, though. Have you seen the age gap with his wife? Big old age gap. No, no.
41:05Who was the third one as well? No one knows. Collins. John Lewis.
41:08Horatio Gould:I don't think you can even find it on my life. He's the one who doesn't actually walk, though, does he? The guy who has to stay in the ship. He's getting cucked. Yeah, he's literally... He's the guy getting cucked. He's not with the ultimate cuck. He's been cucked behind the moon. There's Buzz Aldrin with his wife. Can you imagine? You're actually going that far, going all the way to the moon. I'll just stay in the car. I'll just hover. Anyway, back on Earth, throughout this time, Evil is continuing to do massive jumps, getting more and more ambitious with them. And as ever, he's crashing almost as much as he lands.
41:42Right. Which is really, it's part of the appeal.
41:45Horatio Gould:It's like Arsenal fan TV. people prefer it when they lose yeah yeah yeah so he gets he gets some pretty nasty injuries again but then amazingly he managed to get all the way through 1973 almost injury free successfully lands 14 different jumps so you know this is not the most entertaining sight really for his audiences and evil so this is him as an actual stuntsman this is his prime this is sort of yeah he's kind of nailed it really which isn't he's got the knack doesn't get bums on seats seeing that he's got his eye in yeah so he decides that if he's going to keep his audiences entertained he needs to do something big right and Grand Canyon is off the table so he announces the next best thing it's going to be his biggest jump yet a monumental leap across Idaho's infamous mile-wide Snake River Canyon what a name it is we're looking at it we're looking at a picture of it now well it depends which part he's jumping over he's jumping it's going to be a mile I'm going to assume the bit that we're looking at a photo of yeah he says it's going to be a mile it's a mile wide the jump that he's going to do what?
42:53yeah a mile
42:53Horatio Gould:he's not jumping a mile yeah that's the plan oh yeah fucking hell this is evil Knievel we're talking about fuck me so the point that he decides he's going to jump it's a mile wide it's 600 feet deep a death trap and you know Harley Davidson ain't going to cut it for that jump probably needs a plane well so this is this is 1973 we're up to now and the space race is winding down right so there's a lot of NASA rocket scientists knocking about what works works run dry yeah on the side of motorways with like cardboard sides we'll build rocket for the down the bookies they're hovering outside being cute I used to be a spaceman of course you did mate queuing for spoons in the morning.
43:45I used to be someone.
43:50And so Evil hatches an audacious plan. He's going to recruit some NASA scientists and he's going to jump Snake River on a rocket ship.
44:01Horatio Gould:Okay. Boy. It's not really a jump it's just flight. Yeah. What we'll say. It's not like doing it in a helicopter. It's going to get a plane. so he tracks down this rocket expert. He finds him outside B &Q and he convinces them. Selling his wares. Yeah. And he gets through a few different experts who sort of balk at his idea, but eventually he finds one who will do it. Who's crazy enough. Who's crazy enough. Take the job off. And they design the SkyCycle, a jet-powered, is it jet-powered? Yeah. It's jet-powered. steamboat that's a bit of shit sort of victorian looks better than its house yeah can we see the picture of it oh yeah oh yes that's a space rocket small one that's pretty fucking stars and stripes all over it i actually think nasa should have done a bit more of like a stars and stripes motif on their rockets yeah that looks amazing looks like a firework i guess yeah yeah big one the x2 it doesn't it looks like it's going to blow up yeah it's the only thing it's very simpsons again isn't it yeah it's like being shot I'm pretty sure that is actually a Simpsons episode yeah they've got an Evel Knievel guy it's like being shot out of a cannon basically yeah are you still doubting it Horatio no I'm excited to see how it works out I mean who got shot out of a cannon does that does that actually happen that's like a classic who's this Lance Murdoch is the Evel Knievel George who writes and researches for the Upshot was telling me about the local stuntman near him in Devon oh right right when he grew up.
45:41Horatio Gould:The Devon Evil Knievel. And apparently he was like, let's play with Sagan. We'll see what he's up to. And we Googled it. And he just got in trouble because one of his junior stuntmen had died being shot out of a cannon. Really? Yeah. Do 70s British stuntman, it might be on BFI, maybe on YouTube. There's an amazing video.
46:04Horatio Gould:No, it's just, no, it's like on a bike. Did you pull it off? It's really funny. Yeah, here we go. Yeah, just watch this. Oh, he's cycling. No, look at this. It's brilliant. It's the sound. Get the sound. It's so funny. Put the sound on. People watching from their windows. It's so British. What's he jumping? Some oil cans.
46:28Horatio Gould:Look how grey it is. He's just cycling. They've lit fire. He's upping his game. It's going to jump some fire. Here we go. Quite a long run up. I'm actually nervous now. He's jumping the fire on his bicycle. Wee! It's like going off a curb. Well Mike, that was pretty hair-raising stuff. How do you feel? Without a breath. Just about all. Just how dangerous is it exactly? well you've got to have some common sense in doing it it's not just jumping on a bike and going over a plank bit of technique to it your bike looks pretty ancient actually wouldn't you do better with a more modern racer I don't know if I can afford one I probably will why did you take this up in the first place it's the most British this is why we don't have an evil clean yeah it's just the British sensibilities are just too understated it doesn't really work pretty hair raising stuff there oh yeah was that Evil Knoan that is great yeah it's so great Neville Neville Neville Neville Neville Neville oh yeah our kid Neville yeah yeah yeah I said while Neville is jumping over a discarded lemonade can out of dandelion and burdock.
48:07Horatio Gould:Thousands of miles away, Evel Knievel is genuinely about to try and fly a mile over a canyon in a rocket ship. And on that cliffhanger, well, it is literally canyon hanger. On that canyon hanger, we have reached the end of part two. So you'll have to tune in next time to find out what happens. Evil Knievel is staring into the abyss. I mean, I genuinely don't know any of this, so it really is a cliffhanger. I mean, I assume he survived because we've got another part. That's my only assumption I can make. It's a long funeral. The funeral is very helpful, yeah. When Neville Knoll... It was all the stuntmen who were there.
48:41Horatio Gould:They're all doing different stunts over the coffins. Neville Knoll's tribute at home. Jumping over 15 coffins. A mournful wheelie. Like a three-gun salute instead of... the jump he's doing is basically just like when you go off the curb onto a road so evil is staring to the abyss can he pull off his insane mile long jump or will he die trying find out in part three which Patreon members can listen to right now but if you're not a member you'll have to wait till next time or you can join up at patreon.com forward slash upshot do it just to request no no no no patreon indwelled just three quid it's a bargain it's a bargain to find out it cost more to watch Evil Can Evil live back then jump in the canyon probably yeah probably don't check how much is your Patreon a month three quid that's how much it was to go to Dirty Mouth yeah exactly for just the price of a trip to the Slag Heap we're actually a little bit cheaper at the Slag Heap minus getting free for a price of a trip to Dirty Mouth Mary's roughly inflation adjusted you can listen to part three instantly and you'll get just as much pleasure exactly if not more because you get a bonus episode every week yeah you'll come harder than you've ever come before take that dirty mouth Mary so patreon.com forward slash upshot towers otherwise we'll see you next time thanks a lot guys goodbye thanks for having me thank you see you next time
