The discussion highlights the need for a more respectful environment for female colleagues in sports, as well as the broader implications of such "banter" in today's society.

1:37Andy Gray:I was around George's last night, actually. Oh, yeah? Cook said lovely curry. Did you smash it? Then again, silly question. If you were anywhere near George, you definitely smashed it.

1:53George Wilde:Yeah. Yeah, you go round wildies any night of the week, you'll find Zach hanging out the back of it. Welcome back to part two of the epic tale of Keys and Grey. The bad boys who were shut down because the regime don't like it, man. Well, when we left off, Keys and Grey, they were sort of top of their game, household names. But they were sort of, they were sort of, you go and you make Stag do it, and there was a couple of mates from home that no one else really knows. And they're a bit much. they're on a different level yeah you've gone to uni they've come to visit in halls not quite got the vibe

2:29Andy Gray:your new mates are a reading Judith Butler and then this this bloke from school turns up who wants to go dwarf tossing shit in people's beds where's the titty bar yeah

2:40George Wilde:okay it's exactly that they're asking El Senorio where the fucking taxi owns but yeah they were they were top of that top of that game well yeah they had lovely smooth hands beautiful smooth beautiful smooth hands smooth like a baby's bottom soft as the proverbial they were on about one and a half million quid each a year I think Grey got more than Keys do you think yeah definitely

3:04Andy Gray:I mean he did

3:05George Wilde:he did comms as well he was yeah and also weirdly the presenter's almost a bit more like wallpaper do you know what I mean oh yeah whereas the pundit he was sort of part of the brand so they're making shit loads of money they're super popular they're shagging quite a lot in Andy Grey's case but there were early signs that Andy might be a bit of a shit. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Fair enough. He had, so he had survived that scandal. Yeah. Infamous Lamanga scandal. So what was that? 2007, 2008? Yeah. Yeah. And no one really batting an eyelid. Too late? Yeah. I was kind of getting at that in the previous episode.

3:42George Wilde:I was kind of shocked that he didn't get much shit for that. Yeah.

3:46Andy Gray:I mean, he sort of weathered there was a tabloid storm about it at the time, but then it was just like back on Sky Sports was it the weekend?

3:53George Wilde:Yeah, but the winds changed in the following three years and in January 2011, all hell broke loose when, during Liverpool versus Wolves, Andy and Richard start slagging off the linesman, Sian Massey. It's a female linesman. It's quite rare,

4:11Andy Gray:particularly at the time. She was one of the first, yeah.

4:14George Wilde:She was one of the first and she has to endure their response. So unaware they're being recorded, the pair, they really go for her. Here's the clip.

4:51fuck's sake

4:54George Wilde:it's yeah it's exactly if you're Sean Massey I imagine it's exactly what you dread that people are thinking the thing about like re-listening to that is like their thing in the years which we'll get on to but it's always like it was just banter it was dressing room we're having a laugh we're trying to ease people in they weren't laughing they're saying that with like fucking malice yeah they're so angry it's uh the fact when when Andy Gray goes women don't know the offside rule it's like fucking what dinosaurs is the word because I guess that was just like a standard joke but again it's not

5:29Andy Gray:they're not joking it doesn't seem like it's joking it's like they're genuinely just like she can't quite annoying standard yeah

5:35George Wilde:yeah

5:35Andy Gray:do me a favour and to be honest they probably had conversations like that all the time how brazen it is to be doing that when there's mics what actually is it though

5:47George Wilde:is it like Keys is in the studio Andy's on the earpiece and is it half time? I don't think we know it must be before the game no it's during the game because he says something like no he says we've got one today I guarantee you there'll be a big one like just guaranteeing she's going to make a mistake

6:06Andy Gray:but that's the thing if they are talking to each other from if Keyes is in the studio and Andy's up in the commentary gantry then surely they would know that there are whatever producers or somebody listening you just don't care.

6:19George Wilde:So I guess the difference is this time someone records the clip and leaks it to the press. Presumably a colleague. It was like, you've got some wankers. And the backlash is instant. So straight away, Sky, suspend them. Which is quite a good answer to the whole like, oh, it was this humor of the time. You immediately get suspended for doing it. But actually that's just the beginning because a second unbroadcast clip is then leaked to the papers showing Andy Gray discussing Sean Massey's looks with a reporter, a Sky Sports reporter called Andy Burton. There's no video for this one online. It's been lost, but here's the transcript.

6:56George Wilde:So Andy Burton, he goes, apparently a female lino today, a bit of a looker. A female linesman. One of the crew members says she's all right. Now, I don't know if I should trust his judgment on that. No, no, I definitely wouldn't.

7:09Andy Gray:Definitely wouldn't. I can see her from here. Jesus Christ.

7:13George Wilde:So not only is he saying she doesn't know the offside rule, but he's criticising her appearance.

7:20He's close enough to her as well.

7:23George Wilde:He's really like in earshot. He also knows she's there already when he's like, a female linesman. Yeah, it's quite performative almost. Yeah. I don't know what it is. Burton's got off scot-free, hasn't he? Andy Burton. I don't know what became of Andy Burton. No. He's in Doha, presumably doing BN Sports. Reporter. So yeah, so for Andy Gray, it's, it's now looking pretty bad because it's probably one thing to be like anti women linesman, which is still pretty out of order, but then he's also like leering. Yeah. Yeah. And then the final nail lands in his coffin a day later when a clip does the rounds of him asking his co-presenter, Charlotte Jackson to tuck me in.

8:08George Wilde:So his microphone's hanging out of his waist, but obviously it's, it's a CD, CD gag. Here's the clip. It's the laughter. He's laughing, no one else is. I think Richard Keyes is laughing.

8:29Andy Gray:You can see Richard Keyes has got a bit of a smirk on his face. It's Andy cackling at his own useless gag. It's proper finchy that.

8:37George Wilde:The whole thing is quite horrible. It is mental. And that's three things. so he's not going to survive that. It's three things that week if you count in the manga. It's quite a bit more. Yeah, I don't know. Was the one with the co-presenter actually earlier? I mean, it doesn't fucking matter. They weren't all during that one game. It was mental. Two of them were.

9:00Andy Gray:In a way, I think that one is actually the worst. Just like outwardly, just like in a studio for people just like making that gag to your colleague when she's about to go on air. Is it harassment?

9:11George Wilde:Yeah. And it's like quite humiliating. Yeah, the Charles Massey one is a private conversation. I'll give him that. Yeah, no, I agree with you. That one's the worst. And after that, he's sacked. So he was earning 1.7 mil a year. So that's a pretty penny to piss away. So he's sacked on January 25th and then attention immediately turns to Richard Keyes because the public anger is building with each clip that's leaked. And on January 26th, a new clip emerges of Richard Keyes chatting to Jamie Redknapp about, they're basically, I think they're between, like, they're off air, but they're talking about this unnamed woman.

9:52George Wilde:Redknapp and, I think, Graham Soonest are talking about her. And then Richard Keyes sits down and asks his now infamous question. Did you meet her? No, I didn't meet her. I met her. I met her. I met her dad. Did you smash it? She's doing it. I should grab that. You had a point of please. She's doing it. She's doing it well. I don't know. She's got a body back. Mind you, that's a stupid question. If you were anywhere near it, you'd definitely smash it.

10:23You'd go around there any night and found Redknapp hanging out the back of it.

10:28George Wilde:It. The way he puts his feet up as well. Like it was an all-time classic. He puts his feet up on the desk. Ah, he'd get around there any night of the week.

10:39Andy Gray:it's actually painful to watch how much he's trying to be like one of the lads like with because it's who is it's Redknapp Souness Souness has got absolutely no time for it

10:49George Wilde:yeah Souness actually kicks him to be like sharp you see him kind of with a bit of a nod at the camera

10:55Andy Gray:but still you can see that none of them no one laughs like when he first says smash it and everyone's just

11:00George Wilde:he's not even in the conversation he's like shuffling his papers and he just leans over and goes did you smash it smash it

11:11George Wilde:and then like look we all like i went to an all boys school we probably said some heinous stuff as teenagers but i had genuinely never heard the phrase hanging out the back of it until richard key said it in that video it's vile it's one of the worst phrases

Read the full transcript

11:30George Wilde:it's so it must be a rehearsed line you go down there any night of the week it's like do you know what I mean yeah you can tell he's a good broadcaster that's your takeaway is it it's like it sounded like

11:42Andy Gray:from the start of that conversation they were just having like a very nice chat about because I think it was it was a I think it's maybe an old colleague or something who worked at Sky Sports and she used to go out with her Jamie Redknapp and Jamie's sort of like oh how is she how's she doing just like a normal conversation Richard Key's entry to the conversation smash it smash it it it I mean we will get on to Richard

12:06George Wilde:Keyes' side of the story of what's happening in that clip because he does tell quite a different side of the story and I for one believe him what's not to trust about a man who uses the phrase hanging out the back of it yeah although Jack our producer has just said that he actually did know the phrase hanging out the back of a person his common parlance the circles he mixes in he's Irish I don't know if that changes anything has Richard Keyes got any Irish? Weirdly that Keyes clip, which will come onto his side of it, as I said, but it actually becomes the most famous clip from the whole scandal.

12:44Andy Gray:Yeah. Wouldn't you agree? Yeah.

12:45George Wilde:It's the one that does the round still. Because of his choice of words. Yeah. Yeah. Because it's fucking mental. But I think like he then, he actually becomes the face of it. Partly because Andy Gray had already been sacked. So it was just like swiftly dealt with and he's, there's nothing, there's no blood left to ring from Andy Gray for the press and for the public. Whereas Richard Keyes, he that phrase is like colorful yeah and then it's it's something i don't know it becomes a fucking catchphrase among people yeah well it's that and it's because he because he isn't sacked straight away he's not no he's not he's not sacked but he does apologize sort of sort of so uh so he decides that the best way to address the firestorm of bad publicity that is raging out there is to go and talk sport, you know, where, you know, Keezy's in good company.

13:34George Wilde:And, um, and he's, he's gonna, he's gonna give an interview. He's gonna say sorry. And, you know, hopefully that will address the whole thing. He does say sorry, but he also does mention two sides to the story a lot. Here's, here's a clip. I'll take what you like. I'm taking a kick in and I deserve it. There's a firestorm raging out there and it's been very difficult to step into the middle of it. Look, there are two sides to every argument. We are losing at the moment. Quite rightly, we're getting a post - He still thinks he's a commando guy. It's a lot of angry people out there. There are two sides to this.

14:07Please, we've aired one a lot. Let's hear the other one a little bit. There are some dark forces at work here.

14:15George Wilde:I don't know who put music on there. This is actually a talk sport video. I've uploaded this. Who have been making judgments on me. I know very well. Very well. so yeah so he basically he keeps saying I'm sorry he calls it prehistoric banter yeah it's it's a confused apology I think where it's basically I'm sorry but I was stitched up and I don't deserve any of this yeah I'm sorry you were offended yeah it's a bit better than I'm sorry you were offended but it's like also there's this there's this constant thing about he talks about dark forces being at work which apparently is partly an allusion to the fact that Andy Gray was suing the news of the world for phone hacking yeah okay and they were they're owned by Sky's part owners, Rupert Murdoch.

14:57George Wilde:So there's a bit of a sense of, is this revenge? Which I've never really, I get why you might think that, but like, just remember what Andy Gray did.

15:03Andy Gray:He was slagged because he was slaggy off female lightsaber. Sexually harassing his colleague in front of everyone.

15:11George Wilde:So there's that thing. And then there's also, you know, the thing there goes, a lot of people passing judgment on me, I know very well. He's basically saying, everyone was at this, which is the theme he'll expand on in later years, particularly around Jamie Redknapp. We'll come on to that. But he does also reveal here that he phoned Sian Massey and apologised to her on the phone, which, you know, takes guts. And she supplied him with a line that actually becomes infamous. I rang on behalf of Andy and myself Sunday afternoon. I made it an official apology, which Sian accepted. She and I enjoyed some banter together.

15:51I was wrong. Andy was wrong. We were both wrong. Our prehistoric banter is not acceptable in a modern world.

16:03George Wilde:She and I enjoyed some banter together.

16:07Andy Gray:Stephen sat down for a nice glass of banter.

16:11George Wilde:A warm mug of banter. It's such a weird line. He's kind of saying it like in quote marks, isn't he? Like, yeah.

16:21Andy Gray:More banter, Sean.

16:29George Wilde:gasping for a banter

16:34George Wilde:yeah he later claimed

16:36Andy Gray:whereas Andy Grape

16:37George Wilde:hey waiter more banter fucking hurry up here please dos mas banteros

16:52George Wilde:he later basically accuses Sean Massey of putting the word banter in his head doesn't he he says he says that he when he rang her she said it was just banter and she said that she introduced him to the word banter he never heard of banter before he basically blames her yeah which we'll come up to actually because I think that comes up in a bit but yeah Yeah, it's a fucking car crash. There's also a bit where he gives Karen Brady some shit. Because remember, he slagged Karen Brady off in the original clip. And he talks about phoning her. I tried to ring Karen twice on Sunday night. She didn't answer the phone.

17:30There is no answer phone. So I text her in case she saw a number she was unfamiliar with and didn't want to answer it. I said, Karen, it's Richard Keyes. I very much need to talk to you. Could you please take my call or ring me back? I tried to ring her to say sorry. And she didn't take my call.

17:46George Wilde:I tried to call Karen Brady, but you know what women are like. She was doing her makeup for four hours. So I text her, do us a favor, love, pick up the phone. Come and enjoy some banter. Yeah. So it's Karen's fault. Yeah, I don't know why. I guess he's just trying to be like, I really fucking tried.

18:03Andy Gray:Yeah, also like she saw you, it wasn't that she didn't have you, it was an unknown number. Like Richard Keyes' name popped up on her phone. She's like, fuck off, Richard Keyes. I don't want to talk to you.

18:13George Wilde:Yeah. it's um it's a fucking car crash yeah and perhaps that's why he resigns almost immediately afterwards i think because he says in the interview a lot like i haven't got anyone advising me i don't have an agent really okay you don't say maybe you should invest in it so when people choose to like represent themselves in court yeah it's it's backfired he's tried to take control of the narrative and he's made the narrative a lot worse he's created a few new memes um and yeah he he he resigns yeah which is you know it's it's jumping before you're pushed yeah yeah definitely

18:52Andy Gray:although he loves to say that he resigned right yeah i was never sacked wasn't sacked because

18:58George Wilde:everyone obviously says like sacked duo and he's like wasn't sacked resigned um anyway so so rich keys resigned the the era the banter era is dead and buried but that doesn't mean the odd clip point resurfaced from it, including one of Richard Keyes and Andy Gray in the Sky Sports era that leaked out, I think a few years later. Right. Where they, this is how they greet their colleague, Claire Tomlinson. Good morning, boys. Where is she? Oh, get off the pitch. I'm not on the pitch. Get your tits out for the lads. The lads, get your tits out.

19:41Andy Gray:I should be taking this jacket off When we do it for real Yeah, come on

19:47George Wilde:I gave your throppneys a tweak for them What are they doing? Your throppy Again, terminology I have never heard before

20:05Andy Gray:What's that like a throppity bit? Like the old coin, Throppity. Is that what it is? But what does that mean? Throppity nipple, maybe? Oh, because you said give them a tweak. Give them a tweak. Oh, so what, like lick your nipple? Tweak your Throppity. Does he mean areola? I guess. I mean, I've...

20:26George Wilde:Do you think that's the first time he's sung that version? Do you know how it's out for the lads? Well, do you know it's not the first time he's sung it? It's because Keyes starts it and Andy Gray does not miss a fucking beat. They are singing in unison. They're basically fucking harmonizing. Give me a thrapeas.

20:45Andy Gray:Can you imagine having to work with them two? You can tell from her tone and the look on her face.

20:50George Wilde:She is so sick of their bullshit. I'm not on the pitch, am I? You fucking idiot. She's like, hello, boys. Just like, fuck off, you twat. How do they not realize how annoying they must be? Or do they not care? Any listeners from Glasgow or anywhere can explain, like thrapeas. is that a common from the past Jack he probably knows Jack our producer when you're not hanging out the back of something you're tweaking for a piece I've never heard that slang no I've never also I've seen that video but I didn't remember that bit I remember the fact that they sang yeah tits out for the lads if we want to get our tinfoil hats on when I was trying to find that clip it'd be I typed in Richard Keyes Andy Gray get your tits out really couldn't find the video anywhere and AI Overview was like never happened so you're saying that could be fake no I'm saying Keezen, Google

21:49Andy Gray:they've programmed Grok to wipe that from history

21:53George Wilde:Grok's probably giving them new lyrics, new verses to that song some dark forces must be at work I've not seen that video in a long time I think there's enough evidence to say that they were probably being like that on a constant basis.

22:08Andy Gray:Oh, almost, almost definitely. Yeah. This is just, they just, they got caught out eventually. It was going to happen. And I'm sure that was going on.

22:15George Wilde:What we haven't talked about is, I remember a few people, whenever a scandal like this happens, there'll be someone being like, yeah, someone wants them gone as if there's some like conspiracy. But it's just like, obviously people working with them started to get so annoyed by it. They were like, I'm going to record it.

22:28Andy Gray:Yeah. But like we said before, there was, I think also more broadly in society, there was like a reckoning with that kind of attitude, right? And they like, that's the kind of thing, probably if that was caught on a hot mic in the 80s, it would be, there'd be a sort of clip around the ear, but it would be sort of fine. Or in 2008, apparently. Yeah. Apparently it was absolutely fine. So anyway, so after that, both Keys and Grey were out in the cold for two whole weeks because just a fortnight after their sacking, they were given their own show on TalkSport. I don't remember that yeah on 14th of February Valentine's Day they got given their show which was just what women up and down the country were hoping for on that special day

23:16George Wilde:I think two weeks

23:18Andy Gray:two weeks after

23:19George Wilde:so that's like let's capitalise

23:21Andy Gray:yeah I mean they were they were available it seems and yeah I imagine that does that sort of thing pass in TalkSport

23:29George Wilde:TalkSport's changed quite a lot yeah I don't know if it would then yeah as someone who grew up listening to it but it was different. You might hear, get your throppies, give your throppies a tweak on occasion.

23:43Andy Gray:Later in the year, they also began moonlighting on the corporate after dinner circuit. And I'm not entirely sure whether they'd learned their lesson from the scandal because they decided to call their show Andy Gray and Richard Keyes, smash it. Wow, we got a poster there. So they're just embracing it. Newport County. Is that just Newport County, the football club? Yeah, there's a quote. There's a quote from them saying, the best entertainment we've ever had.

24:07George Wilde:Newport County. Newport County. Just everyone in Newport County. Newport County just thinks that. That's probably the football team, isn't it? I reckon most of these shows would be at a football club.

24:15Andy Gray:Yeah, yeah, yeah.

24:16George Wilde:What does it say? Andy Gray and Richard Keys have made a name for themselves for their easy banter and outspoken opinions. Now you can put yourselves in for a no-nonsense, raucous evening of anecdotes.

24:26Andy Gray:Wow. Yeah. So apparently they actually tried to launch this as a theatre show as well, but they had to cancel it due to poor ticket sales. Which is a shame. Quite good material in there, I'm sure. Around this time, Marina Hyde, the Guardian columnist, wrote a piece about them doing this after-dinner speaking tour where she basically, she sort of prank called them, really. She called up Keys and Grey's booker, feigning interest in hiring them for the Guardian staff party, which I would love to have seen. That's a good shot. I'll just read out the transcript. So Bicker picks up the phone and says, yeah, so they'll come out for nine grand.

25:06Andy Gray:They're not VAT registered, so there isn't that on top. Marina says, I see. And what form does the act take? Booker, anything. They'll do anything. They'll do any presentation. They'll speak for about 40 minutes, whatever you want. It's been going down an absolute storm. They've got so much banter. Marina says, do they do that hilarious riff about the female lineswoman? well they don't tend to talk about the female referee but if the question comes up they definitely will it's just great banter jesus and marina says i'd love them to play the guardian party booker great to be honest they've done mostly male environments with me but they'll adapt to whatever the event is marina says i see so uh if it was mary warnock's birthday party could

25:52George Wilde:they do that yeah they'd be great with that who's mary so mary warnock is an 87 year old

25:57Andy Gray:philosopher of morality.

26:00George Wilde:I feel a bit sorry for that guy because he doesn't get that the Guardian would hate this. I mean, he's not been outed. But that's what I kind of think with the Keys and Grey thing is like, obviously there were cunts, but there were just millions of men out there who were like perfectly nice people who did use the word banter unironically. He got caught in the riptides here.

26:19Andy Gray:So actually speaking of banter, it was around this time that Keys did another infamous interview where he went into a bit more depth on that phone conversation that he'd had with Sean Massey. Please, it was just banter. I said, I probably went to school with her dad. Good luck to her. This is a big day. Big call on halftime, which she got right. When I rang her and spoke to her on the Sunday, I cannot tell you the relief that she was still feeling that she got it right. And she said to me, thank you for not showing the other one because she got one horribly wrong. And we made the decision we wouldn't show it because it wasn't fair.

26:55she also said to me please it was just banter and i said i know that sean i know that and you know she said i expected it last week at sunderland it's just a little bit of fun i said i know but there are other people now who have decided it's not and it's out of hand so i need to apologize

27:18George Wilde:I spoke to her on the phone and she said thank you Richard can I just shake your hand she thanked me and she said please it was just banter

27:29Andy Gray:the thing is like coming back to I know we said it before but like it wasn't banter there was no like joking going on in that when they were saying they were just saying that she's shit doesn't know the offside rule yeah if they were like oh fuck it I mean it still would have been bad

27:43George Wilde:but if they'd been like ah fucking female lineswoman she's probably gonna you know call offside in the I don't know fucking watch this

27:51Andy Gray:she'll probably

27:52George Wilde:miss the offside because she's doing her makeup

27:53Andy Gray:yeah exactly

27:54George Wilde:it'll be a terrible but it was banter but this was just like

27:59Andy Gray:see that fucking do me a favour yeah

28:01George Wilde:doesn't know the

28:02Andy Gray:offside rule probably

28:03George Wilde:yeah it was more it was more angry and vicious than he's making out there yeah but I do love the idea that Sharpton thanked him there's another version I think a later interview where he's talking about the phone call with Sian where she says, please, it was just banter. And I said, no, it wasn't Sian. What did she say? I mean, she says it was just banter. And I said, I know. But what I should have said was, that's not okay. She was bang out of order. He's suddenly shifted some blame onto Charles Massey there or some defense from her. Anyway, as much as they excel after dinner speaking, Keys and Grey are craving a proper fresh start where they confront TV coverage in an environment where their attitude to women is, if anything, a bit too modern.

28:48George Wilde:Qatar, come calling. It's the perfect place. They're welcome with open arms. And in 2013, they become the face of Be In Sports, the Qatari broadcaster. And this is it. They're back in the big time. Banter is back. They bounce back. Yeah, they bounce back. And yeah, they do their talk sports show for like a year from there. And then that seems to sort of peter out. So then it's just pure sort of Lord Ho-Hor, isn't it? abroad broadcasting to because who watches be in sports people in qatar yeah i think it's quite a lot of countries though across right but we we basically lose them from our screens at that point and yeah and then they're just just uh preaching to the choir out of doha uh safe to say they take to life in in qatar like ducks to water especially keys he's always really waxing lyrical about how much he loves it there's a great video where one of his new colleagues does a tour of his home kind of MTV Cribs style.

29:39George Wilde:Let's watch it. It's phenomenal. It's very Alan Partridge. So when you watch the king of being sports, Richard Keyes in the Being Sports studio, he's composed, he's controlled, he can be a bit of a tough man at times with his questions. Ever wondered what he's like?

29:55Andy Gray:Sure, he asked me to get my tits every time again. I found out.

30:03Hey! Look at him! Say hello boys. Has he popped his collar? Yep. Ready to show us around your pad? Come and have a look. Come on then, the king of being sports. Show us your palace. Well, let's, you say the king of being sports, let's stop right there. Because Andy's not here. The prince. The king's assistant. Okay, okay. The prince, I'll take that. The prince, the prince. He's wearing one of those Ralph Lauren big polo shirts. What a privilege. The badge is too big. To be in here. I would like to be able to say to Nick,

30:36George Wilde:It's got a red phone box, a Titanic model.

30:40Andy Gray:I like that you've brought an element of home here. Telephone. Obviously, the Union Jack. Just to remind me every now and again that home is... Oh my God, guys. Or is it here now? I don't know. Anyway, when we came, it was comforting. I've been here two years now. Quite so important. Can you phone home from there? No. Okay.

31:02George Wilde:As he said, there's Union Jacks everywhere. where i don't think he fully conveys how many union jacks there are there in that like kind of dirty ted bakery vibe yeah yeah it's um yeah it's union jacks there's obviously the phone box

31:14Andy Gray:yeah red phone box which is which is a funny size it's not it's not like full size but it's also not it's sort of like shoulder height it's weird things have in your house yeah model of the titanic yeah grand piano as well yeah and then it's the sort of stuff you know you sometimes go to these like junk shops where where it's just like it's a weird assortment of like um stuff that's like plates that have been reclaimed from people's houses that have died and then just

31:43George Wilde:bizarre bits of like tat it's quite bachelor pad the the yeah yeah but then the some of the prints are quite like bad hotel where it's like black and white new york city sky yeah it's not that far from live love love just for his type of love i think he did have a cushion that said love yeah i bet he's got some keep calm and carry on yeah canvas print so i imagine yeah it's that vibe um and then there's a great little easter egg for for the eagle-eyed among us which is when he's in the kitchen showing her his fridge there's a post-it note on it i guess to his cleaner it says please clean inside the fridge thank you which is so partridge it might as well say lynn at the start yeah and during that there's a bit where she asks him what would you save in a fire and he just goes myself quick as a flash take that as red you're saving something else you've got two dogs here are you going to save them?

32:43George Wilde:you've got a wife and a daughter

34:16George Wilde:It is good. It's exactly how you imagine his house to be. And him in the Ralph Lauren shirt with the giant polo symbol. Yeah, it's perfect. So he's very much at home in Doha. I think he genuinely really, really loves it. Oh, yeah. Unfortunately, his domestic bliss isn't to last, though, because in 2016, he's hit by another major scandal when his wife talks to the papers and reveals that he's been to her for his daughter's friend. So we'll hear his side of the story in a minute, but this is the article. The wife of Shane football pundit Richard Keyes has blasted him for having an affair with their daughter's friend presenter keys 59 started his fling with the 27 year old lawyer lucy while working in guitar despite moving his wife out there to a luxurious villa lucy is known for her partying and met keys on the guitar social scene through their actress daughter jemma 32 uh there's another bit where they say that he's like he's sort of a mentor to this group of girls and he's known as the doha dad but then he shags one of them so in Richard Keyes' defense he says that his marriage had already broken down with his wife when he began a relationship with this girl so he wasn't cheating on her when he said he would save himself in a fire when he saved himself in a fire and left her to burn so he's basically like I'm single I haven't cheated on her there's a big thing a lot of people make of is the fact that his wife had cancer but he says that he was with her throughout her treatment she was in remission when this thing happened so not relevant and he says that Lucy, his 27-year-old girlfriend, is not a close friend of his daughter.

35:54George Wilde:They met twice is what he said. Right. So they have met each other.

35:58Andy Gray:I've got to say, as a quite attractive 27-year-old woman, what are you doing going out with a disgraced 59-year-old TV presenter who's been sacked for sexually harassing his colleagues? Not sacked. Sorry, not sacked. Resigned. He revived. I'm sorry. Now I see. He martyred himself, and that is what I find so attractive about him. Yeah, and he's got incredibly smooth hands. Smooth hands. Took the hit for everyone. Smoothest knuckles in the game.

36:28George Wilde:Admittedly, he drags them on the floor. I would also say the sort of person who moves to Doha is more attracted to men like that than someone who stays here. Is that fair? He's got a lovely gaff as well. Yeah, he's got a gaff like that. You've seen his phone box, his giant Titanic model. all of this could be yours the scatter cushions of the union jacks I'm a fan of scale models

36:58luxury liners

36:58George Wilde:which hear icebergs in a way it's a bit of a metaphor to be fair to him again it's not just a fling they got married so we're looking at their wedding pics in 2023 they actually do he and Lucy

37:11Andy Gray:she's a good looking person it's a mystery

37:16George Wilde:one of the world's great mysteries yeah it is bizarre but i also the other thing is he's a

37:20Andy Gray:smooth talker yeah he is yeah give him smoother than those knuckles where he wants to be yeah

37:27George Wilde:um anyway so he's happily married and you know you think finally after years of of drama he's had to move abroad he cups all this shit online all the time you think that on his honeymoon he'll just want to kick back on a on a sun lounger and spend some time with his new love but instead Richard seems to use the honeymoon to hit back at his enemies. So he pens an angry blog. And then he also tweets a screenshot of a story sent to him by his pal, Andy Gray. Unfortunately, he did that thing where, you know, when you screenshot and you also reveal the thumbnails of the other photos the person sent you at the bottom.

38:04George Wilde:And so a few people zoom in and they discover that among the pics Andy has sent Richard Keyes is this one. to describe it it's a meme and the photo is in the foreground is a girl in like academic dress at a graduation but with what Andy Gray would describe as big thrappies she's got very big breasts and they are out cleavage exposed she's very good looking and in the background out of focus is a bloke in graduation dress and it says congratulations to my nephew on his graduation that's him on the left brilliant Andy is a he's a boobs man he's made no secret that fact what a tat some of the it's one of the worst memes I think I've seen that meme yeah yeah he's uh fucking producer Jack's WhatsApp group another thing I like about this is you also see that Andy Gray sent it to him at 8.11am just over breakfast first thing he's seen when he's woken up to be fair when was this 2023 they're quite early adopters of AI slop yeah it is AI isn't it yeah yeah yeah that's true actually but that meme was it was it was around so in corners of the web

39:16Andy Gray:I also like that he was tweeting these kind of things and posting because it was this is on his honeymoon and I'm pretty sure he also on that honeymoon writes a blog about Jamie Redknapp yeah like slaggy it's like basically getting back I think he sort of blames Jamie Redknapp for him getting the sack as well he does we're going to come on to him being forced into resignation are you coming down for breakfast darling yeah it's like hang on sorry Richard Richard we're going we're going to come go snorkeling now and he's like sorry love I just need to finish this blog post

39:46George Wilde:yeah it's it is the needless to say I had the last laugh yeah again it's the Alan Partridge now if you're on your honeymoon and you need to pen an angry screed to silence the haters you're going to need some cheap data on your phone are you not do you think

40:03Andy Gray:Keezy's doing the blogs on his phone what on the sunbed I reckon probably yeah I can

40:09George Wilde:And I can sort of picture him going to the hotel business center, you know, like in a hotel where they've got like a printer and a PC.

40:15Andy Gray:Yeah. But you still have to stand up at the computer.

40:17George Wilde:Yeah. And he's just sort of leaning over the computer, sending Andy Gray his, his grubby memes.

40:22Andy Gray:He's sending the memes,

40:23George Wilde:firing out Jamie Redknapp attack lines. Just one finger on the keyboard, just slowly tapping it. Well, if you don't want to go to the hotel business center, which is famously the most depressing thing you can do on holiday, then why not write your angry blog on your phone using cheap data? and that is where Saylee comes in Zach Saylee is a new eSIM service app from the makers of NordVPN

40:45Andy Gray:Love NordVPN

40:46George Wilde:Yeah beautiful one of our favourite sponsors So Saylee you download the app and then it's cheap data for 200 countries I've just used it abroad cheapest easiest way to use it your phone abroad Couldn't be easier That's why I was messaging you so much Yeah That's why I sent that picture I've been thinking Saylee's theme tune should be

41:03Andy Gray:We are Saylee we are sailing yeah or um sailing away with me sail away there's also that song sail I don't know that one

41:19George Wilde:this is how I show my love sail this is how I get cheap data sorry we're recording this at the end of the day so yeah look don't go abroad without cheap data and use sailing for that and best of all 15 % discount for Upshot listeners. And you get an old VPN free as well. There's your bundle. Yeah. Yeah. I'm sure Keyes, he could put that VPN to good use on his honeymoon. So to get Saley, just go to the app store and download Saley. That's S-A-I-L-Y and use code Upshot at the checkout and you get 15 % off. And I've also put those details in the episode description. Thanks.

41:58Andy Gray:And it turns out Richard Keyes wasn't the only one receiving saucy messages from Andy Gray. Because in 2019, a tabloid paper splashes the headline, Filthy Shades of Grey. Another good one. And it reports that Grey has been dumped by his wife, Rachel, because he's been caught sexting other women. So that's three of them. One was an English dog breeder. Another was a Qatar-based nurse. And the third was one of his TV colleagues, who was happily engaged and very much rebuffed him, apparently.

42:29George Wilde:Oh, is that at B in sports, then?

42:32Andy Gray:I... Yeah. So he's still at it. He's sexting an English dog breeder. Guitar bass nurse. Lovely puppies. Lovely set of puppies you got.

42:54Andy Gray:Hey, señorita, get me one of those labradorios, eh?

42:59George Wilde:And then the guitar bass nurse, to me, sounds a lot like he went in for a scan on his knee and he was like, do you mind tucking me in love? Yeah. Yeah. Hang on, were they all rebuffed or were they?

43:10Andy Gray:I don't know about the first two. Maybe they were. Right, but he's pumping out horny tasks. He's trying his luck and it does result in his wife leaving him. How many wives are we on to now? So that was his third wife, Rachel, who it turns out was also the ex-wife of his best mate, Michael. Oh my God. So Michael and Andy had been been mates since they were teenagers until gray started banging his wife uh i've got a quote actually here from michael he said and he was at my wedding toasting us and then he went and slept with my wife behind my back i don't know if he's best man he did a speech he did a speech wow yeah um wow yeah okay so he's in case you weren't in case you weren't like you know the

43:59George Wilde:meme they were sending each other i was thinking like ah you know that's just like dad stuff do you know i mean and then and then you get to a scandal and you're like no you're an absolute

44:07Andy Gray:bellend shagged his best mate's wife that is awful hang on so then rachel got annoyed with him for

44:14George Wilde:texting the dog breeder and the qatari nurse yeah i mean yeah yeah yeah what do you what were you

44:20Andy Gray:expecting um so he gray has uh he's fathered five kids with four different women down the years you'll be glad to hear they get a mention in the autobiography they get a whole paragraph collectively all five of them get a paragraph Keyes gets two chapters so you can see where his priorities lie actually while we're talking about Andy Gray and his lovers there was one other kiss and tell that's worth mentioning where a girl revealed that Andy used to refer to himself as Golden Balls that's taken surely I think I don't know actually

44:58George Wilde:could have been around you don't think it was when he was banging them in for nerves the original golden balls you can't you can't call yourself can't call yourself alpha nomino you can't call yourself Zizou they take it I just call myself CR7 actually you randy Andy yeah and you're stuck with it golden bald would you allow right so he's just a straight up bastard because that's right up to present day it's just Just at it.

45:26Andy Gray:We will allow our listeners to make up the rules. Yeah, sorry.

45:28George Wilde:I'm being far too judgmental. Says more about me than Andy Gray, to be honest. Obviously, B in sports are not bothered about Andy's antics. So he just carries on in Doha, charging around doing his thing. But you're kind of wondering, what do Richard Keyes and Andy Gray do when they're not philandering or discussing the daylight offside rule with us in Wenger, which is the one bit of them you always seem to see? well in Richard Keyes's case it is taking swipes at footballers and pundits on his blog we mentioned his blog before even on his honeymoon he was penning an angry screed about Jamie Redknapp do you remember before the Qatar World Cup obviously he was the big defender of Qatar he was the Lord Hoor Hoor because everyone was giving Qatar shit including Connor Cody the defender who mentioned the human rights situation in Qatar and Richard Keyes really went for him under the headline leave the big boy stuff alone Connor including one line when he was basically saying like oh Cody's gonna go to Newcastle and take Saudi money it's all fake and then he goes have you been in touch with Jamal Khashoggi's widow no I thought not is that the bar also he never went to Newcastle I just really love the idea of like Jamal Khashoggi picks up the phone like hello is that Miss Khashoggi it's Connor Cody here so no that's yeah that's that's too high did conor cody guys like he never went to newcastle no no it never even happened was it was it linked like it's just yeah he was linked to that move i remember okay all right fair enough it was on the cards but he didn't even do it um he also takes a lot of pot shots at jamie carriga so do you remember when jamie carriga made that joke to kate abdo about her not being loyal to her husband yeah and everyone was like that's funny but he's made an idiot of himself.

47:17George Wilde:It was quite a funny moment. Unless you're Richard Keyes, who tweeted, I think Kate Abdo is a top pro. I've no idea what Carragher is insinuating, but he crossed the line again. How many more times? That show is like so many these days. Too pally. There was an accident waiting to happen. Abdo deserves much better.

47:34Andy Gray:How can you say that with a straight face? You literally you were forced to resign after trying to get your tits out for the lads at one of your colleagues.

47:43George Wilde:He's learned from that. It was Prehistoric banter. Yeah. That has happened because Carragher is too pally with Kate Abdo. He should have been belittling her. And then something like that would never have happened. That is what happens when you treat them as professional equals instead of a pair of tits. Yeah, it's just... Richard Key's talking about women being top pros. It's just... He can't. But I do think it's possible he could have learned from it. But even then, it's like he's... You know when he goes, I've no idea what Carragher's insinuating. it's like it's almost like he sort of missed it a bit doesn't get it he to be fair his beef with Carragher is simple he spat in a child's face and kept his job and Richard Keyes made some jokes in a private conversation to a friend and colleague and was sacked was forced to resign chose to resign chose to resign to quell a firestorm that was unleashed by dark forces because he is a man of integrity yeah yeah um yeah he basically he's always been annoyed about that uh he literally said if it's okay to spit on teenagers and continue to be employed then great for me that was a far more serious offense interesting question yeah but he he wasn't he can't have it both ways either he resigned voluntarily in which case this is a non-issue because he says he wasn't sacked so i guess

49:05Andy Gray:put in a position where i had to fall on my sword yeah i think um carrigan's one you can you can you can put carrigus down to like a momentary loss of head loss of they haven't lost his head and it was sort of red mist he also didn't i do believe him they didn't think that there was a child sat there whereas whereas like richard keys i would dare to to guess that that kind of thing was sort of par for the course for what he was up to in the sky sports studio for for decades yeah it felt more of just like a culture you need to get rid of richard keys was to like wipe clean the slate and like bring in a new culture whereas jamie carrick was just

49:47George Wilde:like don't spill kids yeah it's a tough one both bad both pretty bad if they'd sat carrick i don't think anyone would have been like that's totally unjust no maybe yeah um actually no one gets quite as much shit from richard keys as jamie redknapp we've alluded to this throughout the episode but he basically blames jamie redknapp for getting him sacked sorry for forcing him to resign um so here's a few excerpts from keys's blog so in 2021 he said as my old boss at sky once said of redknapp if ever his brain and mouth engaged at the same time he might have something interesting to say so that's just general shit slagging but then here's him him blaming him um he's talking about the smash it video here hanging out the back of it video and he says and this i think this is the blog he wrote on his honeymoon this is what he's thinking about on his honeymoon getting away from it all he said my response to jamie redknapp was as a result of him telling me that night at chelsea i'll be at your house when you get home hanging out the back of julia and jemma which is keys's wife at the time and daughter quite grim um hanging out the back of redknapp's phraseology not mine.

50:56George Wilde:I simply mimicked it as I did with smash it. Does anyone seriously believe I'm childish enough to use phrases like that? Yes. Yes, I do.

51:05Andy Gray:100%. How can you ask that question? You people that I would be more sure of saying a phrase like that. I've seen you jump, get your tits out for the lads at your colleague. I've seen you use those exact phrases. That's a big accusation he's made against Redknapp, man.

51:18George Wilde:Yeah. So he's basically saying, yeah, and I was and he's basically saying, first of all, he said it about my wife and daughter, which is quite a grim gag. And then he's saying, the reason I was doing it in that clip was to like mock it. I don't buy it. I don't buy it.

51:34Andy Gray:I wanted to draw attention

51:35George Wilde:to the absurdity. I was holding up a mirror to the phrase hanging out the back of it. I was actually highlighting how inappropriate it is in the workplace. You should be thanking me. And I'm resigning because this workplace culture is rotten and sexist. I can't work with pigs like Jamie Redknapp anymore. Dinosaur. it's actually satire

51:55Andy Gray:the fact that he wrote this blog post in what 2023 did he say so that's like 12 years after the incident had taken place like just move on yeah you know sometimes you think of like a good retort to someone like a couple of days later he's thought of this excuse 12 years

52:13George Wilde:you just smashed my wife fuck I should have said the red nose and it's me first shit I do think it's possible that Jamie Redknapp has sort of had quite baldy conversations about women in the workplace that like were probably not that different to like some of the Richard Keys stuff not the like chanting at colleagues but like do you know what I mean I reckon he's probably like yeah smashed her that sort of thing I'm guessing I think that's very plausible just like laddie I reckon there was a lot of that from people who didn't get shit he often kind of alludes to that but I'm not buying this thing that he was just saying it back to red now no it doesn't seem like that in in the video clip yeah 2023 and also the other thing i think it's the same blog post you keep saying like no one wants to move on like i'm happy now in doha just like stop abusing me about my hand area hands and like stop digging this up in the press like get over it he's the one who keeps bringing it up.

53:11George Wilde:And us, obviously, two-part episode. Needless to say, Richard Keyes has the last laugh when he bumps into Jamie Redknapp in 2024. And he tweets, what a day for bumping into unpalatable people. I just saw Jamie Redknapp. Happily, I needed a number two, which was much more pleasant than stopping to talk.

53:35Andy Gray:Because he just got and hid in the bathroom. Yeah. It doesn't sound like he actually spoke to him.

53:40George Wilde:Yeah. well that's schoolboy retort well I needed a poo and that was better than talking to your poo face so why is Jamie Redknapp such a magnet for it

53:50Andy Gray:for him I think because that clip is what does the rounds and he was he was addressing like the conversation if you can call it a conversation was with Jamie Redknapp but Jamie Redknapp sort of got off I mean Jamie Redknapp didn't do anything wrong at all in that conversation

54:06George Wilde:so I reckon it's because of the thing where he's like Jamie Redknapp makes jokes about that all the time I'm the one who, because he has another thing where he claims a journalist told him that during the scandal, they were told to like bury Richard Keyes, but make sure nothing sticks to Redknapp, which I think sounds like a fantasy, but it's possible. Anyway, as much as Keyes likes sniping at fellow pundits on Twitter, he doesn't much like it when the shoe is on the other foot. He said of people on Twitter, they've got a chance to speak to people that are in the public eye, but all the trolls want is to tell you you've got hairy hands.

54:40George Wilde:I'll stick it on my gravestone

54:46Andy Gray:he's bringing it up again he gets a lot of shit

54:50George Wilde:he gives a lot of shit smash it I mean I think

54:55Andy Gray:as you probably can gather from Richard Keyes' regular blog posts they're probably more unrepentant about their sexism him and Andy today than they were ever really so in 2020 Richard Keys launched a cameo you know the thing where you can pay for a video message from a celeb and the caption for his cameo was let's smash it together and have a bit of banter Sean Massey's words not his

55:22George Wilde:she introduced him to that word

55:24Andy Gray:Sean Massey's phraseology that in 2021 the Athletic interviewed both Keys and Grace it was the 10th anniversary of their sacking and resignation from Sky Sports there's some great quotes in that whole article my favourite is probably this one when they bring up that like people were calling them dinosaurs for the kind of things they said and Keezy replied well dinosaurs ruled the world for 300 million years so if that's what I am so be it

55:57George Wilde:that's really

55:59Andy Gray:you dinosaur thanks very much he also says in that same piece it was Sian that introduced me to the word banter she used it in a conversation i had with her on the sunday when i called to apologize for what was said in the hack but she shouldn't have done what she should have told me was that's not funny richard it doesn't help it was some time before i realized that a bit of blame on her sean's fault

56:22George Wilde:sean that's sexist i can't believe i'm gonna have to go now you should have a think about what you said she introduced him to the word banter it's just

56:34Andy Gray:So up until that point, he was a model member of society. He also talked about bumping into Sean Massey in an airport one time. He says, we all laughed. She was a little embarrassed. And he had to explain to her, it was absolutely nothing to do with you, love. It really wasn't. So don't ever think that it was. And it really was nothing to do with Sean. We don't blame her at all.

57:00George Wilde:Why would you blame her?

57:01Andy Gray:She's just doing her job. It's like the way that they're phrasing this is if they think that like Sean's bumped into them and has been like, I just really want to clear the air with Keezy Gray. Because like, I feel terrible about how they got sacked for sexually harassing me and questioning my credentials and whether I know the upside.

57:19George Wilde:I am so sorry for being the linesman that day and getting you in all that trouble. Why would they blame her? She's got nothing. She's done absolutely nothing wrong. You know when he's going, it was nothing to do with you. It really wasn't. It's like, well, you were talking about me. I guess that being like oh we were just talking about female lives we hate all women it has nothing to do with you but you did also say she's not a looker that was about her but that was grey

57:44Andy Gray:I also love this image of Sian in the airport probably trying to catch an early flight up to Newcastle for a big game at St James' Park and the last thing she wants to see is Keys and Gray swaggering out of Wetherspoon's six pints deep she's like hey Sian Sian Sian Sian Shady yo Shady Shady Get yourself over here to yo Just wanted to say No hard feelings about the whole thing You're just You're a great lass You've got a great pair of tits And don't feel bad about yourself Alright Give those droppies a tweet Good girl Yeah It actually isn't their only case of Inappropriate behaviour in an airport Because in 2022 Gabby Logan revealed that she'd once been on a flight With Keys and Grey where for the duration of the flight, they were loudly discussing how sexually repellent they found pregnant women.

58:38Andy Gray:Fucking hell. Yeah, she was... Gabby was also pregnant at the time. Yeah. They were sitting...

58:43George Wilde:There was a dig at her, right? Fucking... That one's almost the worst for me. Yeah. Have you read the quotes from it? No. I can't... But they're basically just like, do you find pregnant women attractive, Andy? And he's like, he's like, no, not for me, Richard. It's fucking disgusting. Jesus Christ. I don't know if it's those words. Yeah. I don't think he says fucking disgusting. thinking like it's so fucking rude yeah fucking hell and they must have been talking about her yeah you can so picture that one's just bullying it's so weird imagine having to sit on a flight with yeah keys and gray in the middle well the other stuff that was just great banter

59:15Andy Gray:so so gabby went public with this story and andy andy gray uh responded by giving a two-hour interview to the telegraph where he reeled off the old the old chris finch excuse so i've got three daughters for fuck's sake and i'm supposed to be sexist come on i was brought up by my mother on her own how could i hate women when i fathered five children with four of them

59:48yeah how could i hate women when i'm constantly asking them to get their

59:53George Wilde:constantly hanging out the back of them. Oh, Jesus. That was also, what year? That was like a couple of years ago, right? Yeah. Is he shocked by the idea that some people consider him sexy? Now, all good things do come to an end. And very sadly, at the end of this season, Keys and Gray are departing B in sports and leaving Doha, moving back to the UK. Oh, really? Wow. Yeah, end of an era. Prehistoric banter is coming home. so I think Key's Key's quite excited because he's finally going to actually live with his wife Lucy because they've been living apart yeah I feel like he's going to release a book surely that would be phenomenal I like that book and you know Andy's I tried to think what Andy's looking forward to about moving back to be fair Key's he's probably ready for a break from football he's you know he's been on telly all this time and actually a few months ago he said I've watched every Premier League games since 1992 in one form or another, which cannot be possible.

1:00:55George Wilde:20 games a week. Sorry, 10 games a week for 33 years. We want some numbers here? Does he just mean he's watched Match of the Day? Yeah, probably. He probably means I never miss the highlights. It's a weird brag. It's quite kettle over a pub. But yeah, it does beg the question, what's next? I think Richard Keyes has teased that something exciting is around the corner. could be anything any guesses GB News

1:01:22Andy Gray:I was thinking yeah that is a good fit yeah or maybe back on

1:01:26George Wilde:TalkSport yeah it's not not got the in our time gig new host of Mastermind countdown alright well I think that's their end the parable it really is a modern parable thanks a lot George thank you thank you Zach

1:01:46Andy Gray:thank you very much

1:01:47George Wilde:And if Richard Keyes lawyers are listening, then please do remember it was just banter. Thanks a lot.
