Key claims
Michael van Gerwen got into a fight at “Den Bosch Pizzeria Shawarma” in Den Bosch after a beach party; he later said the kitchen guy came with him “not the other way around,” and the scrap may have been over the shawarma being “too small.” Mikel Arteta plans RAF fighter-pilot style communication training for Arsenal players under pressure. Neymar is alleged by journalist Rodolfo Gomez to be hooked on whiskey with energy drinks, smoke shisha, and sleep 4-5am; Neymar denies and sues.
Notable examples
Anders Limpar’s two-day “time travel” prank by Swedish TV Blåsningen (hired pilots, staged airport, told he’d been missing); Monty Panesar’s disastrous Celebrity Mastermind quiz and later public retesting; Steelers’ Dublin game—third-choice QB Skylar Thompson’s phone theft in Dame Street; Spalding United player drove to the wrong “Bury.”

In reality, if I'd taken my clubs, I probably would have come back from that family holiday single. It's a brilliant place, stunning beaches, five-star hospitality in some of the best hotels on earth. But for me, just getting out on those courses would have been the icing on the cake. Welcome back to Extra Shot, the podcast about the funniest stories in sport this week. On the pod today, Michael Van Gogh's kebab shop scrap, Neymar hooked on shisha, and an Arsenal star falls victim to a cruel 48-hour prank. My name's Zach. JP is here. Hello, mate. How are you? I'm very well, thank you. Yeah, and Mr. George Wilde is also with us. How are we doing, guys? Bongiorno. Jack's off on holiday again.
59Again? So it's just the three of us. he's in Corfu and it is I think 70mm of rain good a day good part timer it's good stuff you guys having a good Q4 so far? well we're only just into it but I'm looking forward to it for sure I saw a good I think it was Screen Rock Podcast tweet saying Q4 Eve don't forget to leave a hula for Stephen Bartlett is that a real photo? he looks like a member of Razorlight he does yeah So speaking of other upshot favourites, JP, you've got a story to kick us off. I have. Darts legend Michael Van Gerwen has been throwing things other than darts this weekend. And it looks like he's taken it a little bit too far in the Dutch city of Den Bosch.
47So Big Mike's been out and about with the boys to a local beach party, which was headlined by a band called The Dirty Daddies. Yes, please. Yes. That's Dutch. and for those that don't know the Dirty Daddies, the Dirty Daddies are a bit like a hybrid version of Jedwood and Linkin Park. Yeah. That's right off your street. Is that your description, or is that from their bio? No, but they should be in their bio. I spent about a half hour listening to their gigs, and it is fucking mental. Yeah, good stuff? Well, you can see why he might be a bit hyped up coming back into town. So the story is that him and the boys have gone back into town in the search for maybe a late night kebab or whatever, and they've come across an establishment called the Den Bosch Pizzeria Shawarma.
34It's got 2.7 stars on Google. It's open till half three in the morning. Saw a place the Dirty Daddies would hang out. And you can imagine this sort of establishment is used to serving Donner meat to the creme de la creme of Dutch society. And you can imagine the look on their faces when Big Mike's pitched up for a late night bite with the boys. Yes, please. But we're unsure exactly what's happened, but a fight has broke out inside the shop. We're going to have a quick look at some footage here. So Mike's right in the middle of the scrap. This is a proper scrap. Yeah. Really swinging for each other.
15It's in the kebab shop. Looks like he's got his whole crew with him. He's dressed like a bouncer as well. He is. Looks like the Dutch version of the Wheelstone Raider on the right. So what are they fighting about? Well, we're not 100 % sure, but Mike's come out afterwards and said, the guy came with me from the kitchen, not the other way around. Sort of New York gangster for the first. You know what I mean? Yeah, same. And it does make it sound a little bit like he has fallen out with the chef. So like, you know, maybe they've run out of garlic sauce or there's no salad on his lamb donna. Yeah.
55I've got to say, like many of his PDC colleagues Michael Van Gogh looks like he knows his way around a kebab yeah and a scrap I was going to say if you're picking a sort of gang of sports stars to be you know fighting your corner in a kebab shop he'd be a good one he's right up there he is right up there so you know as you do you air your laundry on Dutch radio on Monday morning I think this happened on Sunday morning and apparently he said that the shawarma was too small which you know I can feel his pain you know that anger that is frustrating when you're like 2am yeah you've been out watching the Dirty Daddies all night all you need is a dirty kebab to watch it down you've given me a charge charge portion you've danced up a right appetite yeah now look we're all guilty you're taking it a bit too far after a boy's not out to liquid and envy but whatever way you look at it a scrap with the local kebab shop isn't a great yeah isn't a great look the local kebab shop is one you really want to be on site with don't you yeah you want to you want to because if you sort of build up a bit of a relationship maybe you get a free portion of chips every now and again yeah it's ridiculous can't be scrapping uh i don't know whether he's going to get an invite back to the beach party now anyway but um it's been a tough year for him um he's going through a divorce at the minute with the woman he's got a couple of kids with and i think that we can kind of safely say that we can see which kind of divorce dad route he's taking and it's not sipping huel and ultra marathons in norway by the looks of things, you know.
23His Q4 has got off to a terrible start. Yeah, real, real bad start. Awful. Yeah, apparently the Dutch radio, like on the morning, they also asked him if he was drunk during the incident. And he said, who is sober at 2A? Which I like. True, yeah. And thanks to Dan for sending that in. Yeah, that is great. Dan is a loyal listener. He's been keeping us up to date with the Quincy Promise trial as well. So there's a few updates we're going to save for another episode. but um one man that you're not likely to see scrapping in your local branch of abracababra is arsenal manager michael arteta so you know michael he's he's got to be up there with the most intense most serious blokes in the premier league constantly cooking up these creative ways to instill his players with a winning mindset which hasn't entirely gone to plan uh so we spoke before about him hiring this troop of pickpockets to rob his players during a team dinner and teach them about staying alert.
24And now he is lining up some equally highly skilled operators to teach his Arsenal players another lesson. So this week Mikel revealed that his latest plan is to rope in some RAF fighter pilots to teach his squad about communication under pressure. It just smacks of like Top Gun Maverick was on the telly last week. Yeah, I'm having some of that. I mean, this sounds a bit better than the whole, you know, this duck goose thing. Did you ever see that? What's that? He was like... They're from Top Gun as well, aren't they? Oh, yeah, fuck. Maybe that's his thing. But no, he showed all the Arsenal players an image of this duck that looks a bit like a goose.
05And they're like, well, what does that mean? And he's like, well, you have to interpret different situations in different ways. Wow. Is it going to be like one of those pictures? It's like you either see a puppy or a vagina.
21yeah i remember fiori is saying yeah yeah it was so was so he's he's pumping in playing with the boys by kenny loggins in the training sessions and i don't know i actually kind of feel like among his quite bullshit ideas and weird motivational techniques i think this one's kind of interesting so obviously when you're traveling at 1200 miles an hour 30 000 feet You've got to be quite direct, use few words, communicate very clearly. And, you know, that's what he wants to instill in his players. I don't know how much crossover there is between intercepting Russian drones over in the North Sea and telling Miles Lewis Kelly to go five at the back.
05But still, I'm also not sure whether they're going to be incorporating other elements of the RF fighter pilot training. You can't imagine Riccardo Calafiori being parachuted into the Siberian wilderness and forced to live off rehydrated sachets of lasagna while being hunted by highly trained SAS operatives. I do kind of understand the logic on the communication under pressure thing. Yeah. Be clear on what you're trying to say, not like, is this a vagina or a dog? Like, I can imagine that actually being quite useful in a football match. Do you know what I mean? It's quite like Stephen Bartlett management school type of things, isn't it?
44I've been listening to a bit much high-performance podcast. But it actually wouldn't be the first time that fighter pilots have played psychological games with an Arsenal player. So I came across this story recently about Anders Limpar, who's a Swedish midfielder for Arsenal in the 90s. And Anders was a big name at the time. He won the first division title and then the Premier League with Arsenal. He won the FA Cup with Everton as well. 58 caps for Sweden. So a bit of a national hero, he might say. So he was the perfect target for the Swedish TV prank show Blasningen. And Blasningen's bag is no sort of cling film over the toilet jobby.
26This was a two-day,£200 ,000 prank, which involved hiring fighter jet pilots to convince Anders that he travelled in time. Um, so it all kicked off in 1997 when Anders boarded this light aircraft for a flight from Stockholm to Gothenburg. Uh, he thought he was going to the launch of this new beer. He owned a bar and it was a beer for this bar. Uh, and he got on board and on board the plane with him were actors playing scientists. And as soon as he got on, they started to sort of bamboozle him with this scientific jargon. and as they flew the plane suddenly started to drop up and down and start jerking so the pilot's in on it the pilot's in on it simulating turbulence sort of flight so he's jerking the plane on purpose yeah so dangerous they got away with a lot in the 90s and anyway sort of funny noises are coming from the plane big bang and then the scientist suddenly says I've done it I've done it.
33I've flown two years in time. And they can overhear from the cockpit on the pilot's radio. He's talking to air traffic controller. They're like, flight 217, are you there? Where have you been? You've just shown up on the radar. And then Anders begins to freak out. Suddenly he hears something. He looks out the window and there's these two fighter jets that have been scrambled and flying alongside their plane. and at this point he's like fully freaking out he's trying to get into the cockpit to talk to the pilot and eventually they land at this this airport and this this just shows how far this prank show went they'd booked out they'd hired this entire airport out uh it was filled up with like scientists people playing journalists so they they land they come off the plane he's being all actors all actors all actors he's being mobbed by journalists who try to ask him questions gets shepherded into this aircraft hangar where there's a load of scientists waiting to ask him questions.
38And he gets told that it's now 1999. They've been missing for two years. Surely you're just like, mate, this is impossible. I don't know. He's like hook, line, and sinker. JP, there were scientists on board. Yeah, true. Fair enough. There was an absolute cartoon character of a scientist going, Yolika, we've done it. I'm getting like back to the future vibes. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I mean, to be fair, I reckon if they did that, if they tried that on Cole Palmer now, I reckon. Yeah, I mean, does Cole Palmer know what year it is? I'm saying strays. Anyway, they're going fully in on fooling him. They tell him that his family's had a funeral for him because he's been missing for 15 years.
25Gets given a newspaper that shows that Norway won the World Cup in 1998. Anyway this whole thing Goes on for two days Also the Norway thing Presumably there's a bit Of a like rivalry there Sweden and Norway So they're just really Trying to put the boot in Your family thinking you're dead Is probably the worst bit Yeah Yeah yeah Yeah two days Okay my family Think I'm dead Alright yeah that's it What? Norway So yeah it's going on for two days Completely freaked out And then There's also There's no reason for this prank to go on any longer than a couple of hours. It's completely unnecessary. They've got what they need.
04But eventually the TV host jumps out and reveals that, of course, it was all a prank. And Ander said later, I felt like I had a rucksack full of stones just fall off my back. I was so relieved. Surprise! To be fair, that sounds like mad and really cruel, but I can see Arteta doing that. Yeah. Psychologically. Yeah, him jumping out and being like, this is so you always stay in the moment. Never looked at a future. Always stay in the moment. Yeah, it's like, it's 2030, you've bottled the league again. Yeah, Max Dalman just shaking. Well, apparently this Swedish TV show had done a similar thing with a Canadian guy two years earlier.
50And he ended up in such a bad state that he was having like psychological help afterwards, which you can understand. he's not strong enough he's not strong enough for one of Arteta's teams then is he that guy yeah yeah so they did it with a Canadian bloke he needed psychological help and they felt brilliant yeah let's do it again let's do it on Andrew's limb part let's do that again but bigger yeah we were chatting a little while back about Derren Brown that trick or treat show oh yeah where they would do some fucking cruel stuff to them as well god bless the 90s child's play compared to what they're on to in Sweden.
28So yeah, anyway, this whole two-day ordeal for Anders ends up getting cut down to a one-hour show. And apparently for years, he was considered a laughingstock in Sweden because he'd just completely fallen for this. Oh, bless him. Fans of the Brazilian side Santos might be wanting to give that kind of shock therapy to their star man, Neymar. So a bit of a furore kicked off over in Sao Paulo. this week so obviously we've spoken before about Neymar's been pretty shit since he rejoined Santos lots of rumors that he's been partying a lot not taking things massively seriously it's not like him exactly exactly it's really not what they're expecting to be fair to him he's been out with injury quite a lot but this week the Brazilian journalist Rodolfo Gomez came out with some very big allegations.
25So he said on his show that Neymar is hooked on whiskey with energy drinks, smokes shisha and only goes to bed at 4 to 5 a.m. in the morning before training. Feels a bit Neymar-ish, doesn't it? It does, yeah. You can imagine him up sitting on Fortnite with a big can of Monster, can't you? Big allegations and obviously it caused quite a big stir in Brazil. The journalists also claim that training sessions have been pushed back so that Neymar can attend. You'd be knackered after that Yeah. Yeah. Apparently Diego Maradona used to do have a similar situation in Barcelona before he joined Napoli. Just with a big bite of Coke.
03Yeah. Well, that was actually when he got into Coke, but the, the, the manager would like move these training sessions back to the afternoon to accommodate his lifestyle. There was this story of a journalist going to visit him. I think he was out injured to be fair at this time, but the journalist goes to Maradona's house in the middle of the day. And he's just, asleep on a bed in the garden, surrounded by people drinking, snorting coke off a ping pong table. Sounds like a good crack on. Yeah, yeah. I should say there's no suggestion that Neymar is doing anything quite like that. Yeah. Well, he also denies the energy drink thing, right?
41He does, yeah. So his management put out a statement saying that the allegations were reckless, defamatory, slanderous and false. So he denies the energy drink thing, but not the booze or the shisha thing. No, sorry, I meant all of it. He denies all of it. He's now suing the journalist. Right. Which, to be fair, he does have the funds for an extended court battle. We spoke a couple of weeks ago about him inheriting the fortune of a Brazilian billionaire who died and, having never met Neymar, decided to leave his entire fortune to them. Like a billion or something. It was a ridiculous amount of money.
15Keep you a monster, wouldn't it? Yeah. So, to be fair, I don't think he really needs that Santos contract anyway. if you're getting a bill get on the shisha so anyway we'll keep an eye on that story to see if the name of his court case develops so I don't know if either of you watched any Champions League matches last night I know Chelsea were in action Chelsea are off the mark yeah which I'm happy about yeah Liverpool lost which I'm also happy about well Real Madrid did win although it was a little bit of a mismatch so I don't know if you saw but they were drawn against Kairat Almaty in Kazakhstan didn't we didn't Chelsea play them last year mate we played a team in Kazakhstan I think this one so there was another team Astana Astana but this like Cairo Almaty they're like close to the border they're like close to the border with China yeah so I mean it's the furthest east the Champions League game has ever been played fucking hell basically I mean there's like part of Kazakhstan is in Europe and a big old part of it is not in Europe and it's yeah Almaty is the big old part not in Europe yeah it's closer to it's about a four hour drive from China that is not that is not championship yeah exactly what you need after a 5-2 defeat well this is it so that was on Saturday and then Sunday morning they had to jet off for 4 ,000 miles get straight on the plane 4 ,000 miles I know and yeah so they arrived however many hours I think it was like an 8 hour 9 hour flight obviously this draw is a big old deal for Almaty and for Kazakhstan you know the whole country is very excited not least the city airport's PR team so they did not waste a minute mining the visit for content so the players like you say they've just lost 5-2 they've had a 4 ,000 mile flight and as they get off the airport the airport had set up a yurt by rivals and hired a band to play the Champions League anthem on traditional Kazakh folk instruments we've got a clip here
19that's great
24I mean they look quite cheery yeah is that Roberto Carlos yeah it looks like he's tucking into a local delicacy look at that to be fair they might have thought they'd flown back in time yeah
41I mean to be fair I'm sure they're all in first class and they're not like slumming it on Ryanair are they no I know but even so and then And so the airport had also hired someone in traditional Kazakh dress to hang around with a bow and arrow, which is not ideal at an international airport, is it? Yeah, that was outside the airport. Yeah, she's terrifying, isn't she? That'll get your blood pumping, won't it? Yeah, imagine if you came out of Stunson. Yeah, so I mean, they did end up running out 5-0 winners. But Kyra almost scored in like the first 10 seconds. Really good. Could be very different.
15That's a jet lag. I know. I was getting like really, I built it up like there was going to be a big upset in my head. Because there was an interview with Kairat, I've got this Brazilian player who signed for them last year. And he said when he first turned up, the city, like the air in the city was so dry that he just instantly got a nosebleed as soon as he tried to train. Acclimatise. Yeah. And that happened for a month until he was able to play any games. So I was thinking, you know, maybe the whole starting 11 for Madrid would just be. Yeah. But yeah, sadly not. anyway speaking of long journeys the Pittsburgh Steelers travelled 3 ,500 miles to play against the Minnesota Vikings in Dublin last weekend it's actually 500 miles closer than Real Madrid travelled which is mental so it's the first time an NFL game has been played in Ireland and the Steelers organised it because they according to them have a deep connection to the country doesn't everyone well yeah it's a bit of that I think to their own by a very prominent Irish-American family to be fair to them the Roonies Roonies yeah no connection I'm pretty sure to Wayne I should say a few of their players also have Irish heritage apparently of course yeah great great great uncle yeah founded an Irish bar in New York yeah so I mean they were probably looking forward to rediscovering their roots you know maybe sinking a few pints of Guinness with the cheery locals you know taking in a trad band hearing some ditties maybe.
45Unfortunately, it didn't turn out quite like that for third choice quarterback Skylar Thompson. A very Irish name. Skylar. Exactly. So the team arrived in Dublin Friday morning and it sounds like I think they basically went straight out on the lash because at 2.30am that night, Skylar was in the Dame Street area where he was jumped by a group of blokes who stole his phone. Were they on electric bikes? Were they off? Oh, I don't know. I think they like actually jumped him rather than just snatching it oh really because i'm getting like piccadilly circus like late at night yeah no no i think it was uh maybe outside the club and they all actually attacked he was fine he only had minor injuries but um you know not probably not exactly what he was uh expecting from his big trip his iphone 17 has gone walkies exactly yeah well that's right um so obviously you know he's probably his his pride's hurt he's got a few minor injuries and probably wasn't too popular with the rest of the team because after that they were all then banned from going out on a Saturday night.
46Is this pre... That would be post-it. This is all before the game. The game was on Sunday. The game was on Sunday. Surely they're banned from going out on Saturday night anyway. You'd have thought so but apparently he's like, nah. But if you're third choice, quarterback, I don't know much about American football. Have you got much chance of getting on a pitch? No, so he's already injured. Right. Oh, so he was just there for a laugh anyway. Yeah. yeah the other way to look at it is he's already got an injury and he's just attacked by a group of blokes I like to imagine that he got attacked because he was just walking around Dublin with his family tree trying to yeah trying to find his great uncle Uncle Paddy is that you?
25he's not going to be hanging around after that is he? find his great great uncle and kill Kenny yeah bless him I guess after that experience on his next visit to Ireland Skylar will probably be locking himself away in the safety of his hotel bedroom rather than strutting the streets of Dublin in search of some bacon and cabbage. And if he does do that, he will probably want to stream all his favourite shows from back home. So Skylar, may I recommend NordVPN? NordVPN allows you to change your location to wherever you want in the world, which means you can watch all your favourite shows and stream sports events that are not available in your region including maybe the minnesota's next game in dublin wherever you are and nordvpn have been very kind and offered upshot listeners an exclusive discount so if you go to nordvpn.com forward slash upshot that link will give you four extra months on your two-year plan and there's also no risk at all because nord have a 30-day money-back guarantee so you can go to nordvpn.com slash upshot to get that and we'll put the link in the podcast episode description box i think skylar should have used that on friday night instead of going out in dublin exactly it should have been just at home watching house of guinness yeah you get everything you need from netflix man yeah um anyway before we were talking about Anders Limpar's cruel experience on Swedish TV.
04But Anders is far from the only sports star to be tormented on the screen. So one of my all-time favourite videos is the time England cricket legend Monty Panazar went on Celebrity Mastermind. Honestly, it's one of the all-time bad quiz performances. Had an absolutely torrid two minutes in the famous chair. we've got a clip of it here birds described as pelagic spend most of their lives flying over what? sky in what 97 film do a group of unemployed men in Sheffield become strippers for a night at their local working men's club? the dream boys in which city is the Olympia Stadion built for the 1972 Olympics and where Germany's national football team played international matches until 2001 oh god Athens Munich in an 1819 poem what season of the year does Keats describe as a season of mists and mellow fruitfulness Oliver Twist did he get did he get one he did he does get a couple yeah one of the questions is how many holes are there at a snooker table how many pockets he does get that right he gets the first question as well he gets the first question right and then after that it goes to his head I think like if you start going on that sort of trajectory where it's getting worse and worse and worse, it probably gets to your head, doesn't it?
30Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, I mean, some of them were hard, but you just say pass. Yeah. The season one where it says Oliver Twist, that is damning. Which season does the John Keats' fire refer to? Spring, summer, autumn, winter. Oliver Twist. Yeah, fuck Oliver Twist. Fuck off. Yeah, I mean, I can imagine that. When you're in the chair, lights are on, cameras are on. You defreeze a bit. Anyway, it's a great clip. But it's been for many years a bit of a subject of ridicule for Paul Monty. It was dug up last year or the year before when he had a short-lived shot at becoming an MP for George Galloway's party.
16which you know i've got to say it wouldn't fill me with a massive amount of faith seeing that clip from the guy who you know is supposed to be campaigning for better transport links for my region and he thinks that the german national team plays their home matches in athens um yeah he he did pull out of the election campaign after after a week a lot of piss taking particularly focusing on that video yeah um anyway it seems like all that mockery has stuck with monty because last week he took to the streets to prove that he's not quite as bird-brained as he seems in that video uh so he challenged members of the public to answer those same questions that he'd faced in the mastermind chair hoping to prove how hard they actually were he's really not letting it go is he no it was about 10 years ago here's a question in which city is olympia stadium built for the 1972 olympics and where germany's national football team played until 2001 uh it is in munich you've got that right wow i can't believe you got that right Was that a hard question, easy question?
32I think it was alright. Yeah. Germany, England, if you said it. Okay, well, I said Athens. So there you go. I've had it hard. Yeah, yeah. Thanks. See, someone's got sympathy for me. What is the title of the first Chronicles of Narnia book to be published? Oh, jeez. Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe? Yeah, very good. That's very good. Surprising. Was that an easy question or a hard question? Fairly hard, I'd say, but I'm not sure. Exactly. I've had it hard. I said CJ Lewis, that's probably the wrong answer. But what was the difficulty about the question? Well, I just don't have the general knowledge of that subject, I suppose.
09Exactly, exactly. The general public don't have the general knowledge. How am I supposed to get these right? Here's a question now. Kimberley, named after a South African city, is a rich source of what very precious stones? Diamonds. That's a very good answer. Very good answer. I said, I don't know. obviously I was under pressure during that time why was that such an easy question for you? it wasn't an easy question I just guessed see I told you these questions are hard it wasn't easy for him, I had to pass he got it right and obviously you beaten me he's just a baffling man to have a conversation with do you think that's like a bit of therapy for him?
50he's trying to like prove that the answers are difficult I mean I think I get the feeling that he's been living with this for a long time. I mean, we have dug it up before and I guess we're not the only ones. But he's trying to prove them wrong. But yeah, he seems quite bemused when they actually answer a lot of the questions correctly. How did you get that? But also when people have tried to be nice, he's like, how do you get, he's like, yeah, I guess just lucky I suppose. I suppose it was quite hard and he's like, exactly. He didn't get it. I didn't get it. No one can get it. It's the one where the guy's like, yeah, I guess it was quite a hard question.
26He's like, And he's like, exactly, it was a hard question. And the guy had got the question right. General knowledge. This episode is brought to you by Google Chrome. 34:19Where would you relieve yourself? You've just been kicked out. See? The general public would have pissed on the bouncers. You'd have liked it, wouldn't you? I pissed on the bouncers. It's a hard situation. Actually, Monty is not the only sports star whose geography leaves a lot to be desired. So non-league side Spaulding United travelled to Bury St. Edmunds in Suffolk last week to take on Bury Town. Unfortunately, they were without star defender Lewis White because he accidentally drove to Bury in Greater Manchester instead. I've got to say, if Bury St Edmonds, the team name is Bury Town, did you say?
54Yeah, that is confusing. It's kind of confusing. I mean, he also plays in the Southern League, which is a bit of a giveaway. Also, do they not have team buses in that sort of? I guess not. No, so yeah. Wasn't, so yeah. So anyway, about three and a half hours away, I think. At least going convoy. Yeah. Yeah. So the whole thing was not ideal, particularly as Spaulding found themselves down to 10 men and trying to see out a draw towards the end of the game. Unfortunately, Lewis did make it back. So he realised his mistake as soon as he arrived in Lancashire, immediately turned the car around and was able to hot foot it down to Suffolk in time to play the last seven minutes of the match.
38Oh, okay. So he arrived mid game. Like at the end of the game. Yeah. He arrived. Yeah. Like I say, he got there to play the last seven minutes. they actually saw out a win oh shit so he and then he drove straight back to his house in Leicestershire completing a seven hour round trip nice you'd be fucking fuming wouldn't you yeah I don't know what his his like appearance fee is for Spalding United maybe like I reckon less than less than 200 quid he'd do well if it's covering the petrol I just love the idea of him arriving in Bury and just like going just like wandering around the town asking where where the game is isn't burry the team that uh didn't they they're the one that went out of business isn't they is it i don't know so they did yeah they are yeah yeah yes is there a team there is no there is no football team anymore you've gone two years into
39very good um not dissimilar to the story we told a few weeks ago about snooker star neil robertson oh yeah so it was actually an old story but he'd i'm pretty sure he'd accidentally driven to a village in cornwall called sheffield instead of instead of driving to the crucible which is that is that's that's worse i think like sheffield surely you know like the sort of neck of the woods that sheffield is and he'd done it in like barnesley as well apparently there's a tiny village called barnesley and he'd gone there and said to the barnesley metrodome yeah i mean i guess he's australian so it's kind of like true country yeah you should really know where the crucible is you'd have thought yeah so isn't sheffield like the home of the crucible the crucible is the home of snooker that's like he's been there before yeah i think the village in cornwall it's like a Hamlet and it's got like a population of about 30 people.
32But you know when you're typing into the TomTom and it comes up with like sort of suggested areas, sometimes if you're like... The TomTom, I think you've been on the same flight as Anders Limper. Do you know what I mean though? It comes up with like suggested places. Yeah. Easy mistake. I'm just like, yeah, him rocking up in Cornwall. This ain't no Homer Snooker. Yeah. I was trying to see if any like football teams had made a similar mistake, like the whole team rocked up in the same place. Couldn't find too much, but there was a group of French fans that travelled to Bucharest in Romania to watch France during Euro 2021.
13Except France were actually playing in Budapest, about 500 miles away. Nice. Yeah. It's a shame, isn't it? Yeah. And I don't think you can talk about turning up, thinking that you're turning up for one thing and then actually doing another without mentioning Guy Gomer. Is this the BBC guy? Yeah. Can we just have a quick look? I mean, any excuse. Guy Cuny is the editor of the technology website News Wireless. Hello, good morning to you. Good morning. Were you surprised by this verdict today? I'm very surprised to see this verdict to come on me because I wasn't expecting that. When I came, they told me something else and I'm coming.
54You got an interview. So it was a big surprise anyway. A big surprise. Exactly. Yeah. He was going for a job with the data centre. And basically there was someone with a similar name that was supposed to be on BBC Live and they just sent him straight into the studio. He does a better job of passing. He looks more comfortable than Monty Panassar on the set of Mastermind. More convincing. Yeah. God, it's so good. I love that. It's good. yeah such a good such a good clip iconic I think he got the job as well didn't he did he actually I'm pretty sure he did which like if you just like give us an example of where you you've had to cope well under pressure so well alright I think that's all we've got time for we're going over to Patreon now actually before we do that we've got some exciting news so on the 15th of October we are going to do a live recording of Extra Shot from a pub, a mystery pub.
