In short

Part two of a discussion about Novak Djokovic’s rise to GOAT status and the controversies around him, especially during COVID, his on-court disciplinary incidents, and later public/PR blowback.

Guest backgrounds

Josh Berry is a co-host/comedian-style commentator. The other speaker is The Upshot host (no specific bio provided in transcript).

Key claims

Djokovic’s “Adria Tour” during COVID ignored safety norms and helped fuel his reputation as a vaccine refuser; his family later scapegoated Grigor Dimitrov. Djokovic’s US Open disqualification is framed as an anger-driven incident with a line judge. Australia’s border/visa saga is portrayed as politically charged and culturally driven by “rules are rules” sentiment. A tabloid claim alleges a honey-trap/blackmail attempt, which Djokovic avoided.

Notable examples

Adria Tour parties (Macarena “A Little Party Never Killed Nobody”), COVID positives and tour collapse; Djokovic hitting a line judge at the US Open; Australian Open 2022 visa detention/deportation; Natalia Skekic alleging a £50,000 seduction offer; Djokovic’s later French Open 2023 record surpassing Nadal.

1:11So you were scrolling on Marketplace, and there it was. The bike you'd been searching for. You sent a message, and it turned out the seller was super chatty, kind of funny, and an avid cyclist. The next thing you know, you're in a cycling crew. Well, a community cycling group. The thing about Facebook, you might find more than what you're looking for. From a browse to a bike ride, this summer, find more on Facebook. Dobrodošli. Welcome back to The Upshot, where we are on to part two of Novak Djokovic. The second Serb, if you will. The second Serb. It's too good. The titles don't get more crisp than that.

1:49That's lovely. We're just tucking in some traditional Serbian cuisine, are we? We've just finished our pleskavica. It looks like a kebab It's a kebab It's sort of a kebab bread We're looking at Serbian food It's like a subway sub I've actually eaten something very similar in Slovenia I think it must be It looks delicious Yeah, that region Pleskavica It is delicious A bit of manuka honey I don't know if that has the grains in the millet that I'm hoping for I think it can be customised to be quite Novak So yeah, where we left you was Novak was, he basically established himself as an equal to Nadal and Federer one of the true greats.

2:28He'd also revealed that he had some slightly fruity sort of scientific views. Dinner arrangements. Dinner arrangements. He diagnosed his gluten intolerance with a bit of bread on the outside. He'd given up Robinson's fruit and barley and was just drinking manuka honey and algae. Pure, yeah. And he's just moving shit with his mind, crucially. So yeah, pretty fruity, but everyone's sort of, you know, that was just quite good fun back then. until 2020 swung around. He actually started the year very well. He won the Australian Open yet again, his 17th Grand Slam. The Australian Open's sort of his most fruitful.

3:07You're looking like I've got that wrong. No, no, you haven't got it wrong. I'm just trying to remember it. Who did he beat in 2020? They do. I can't remember the Australian Open before. This was the time of the bushfires, wasn't it, as well? That's good knowledge. who did he beat Dominic Thiem he beat Thiem in the final yeah five setter oh really oh okay so he's just he's beaten Dominic Thiem in a five set thrilling it was 2-1 down as I recall yeah yeah he served about 13 aces memory serves I believe it was serve accuracy of 84 % interesting so he started that year well another Grand Slam 70 I think it's clear at this point that he's going to overtake Nadal and Federer, isn't it?

3:52Surely. Because what was the magic number? 20? 21? Nadal kept picking them up, though, because Nadal won his last one in about 22. But the pace of it was like Jogovic was winning three for everyone. And Jogovic was still pretty young by this point. And Roger Federer, you might say, to use his words, he'd given up. Which is weird. It's not the story of the guy that just gives up every time. So yeah, Roger's fading as a force. Novak's really tightening his grip on GOAT status. And then COVID breaks out. and it's pretty clear that sport is going to be really fucked by this because obviously you can't have crowds can't have people together tennis grinds to a halt everything grinds to a halt and early on novak djokovic says if i have to take a vaccine in order to return to tennis i'm not doing that i'm not putting that in my body which is quite controversial at the time um but more controversial is probably when his wife pops up on instagram sharing a video that suggests coronavirus is spread by 5G phone masts.

4:51Do you remember that? I didn't realise she'd done that. I don't actually follow her, but I remember the Huawei. Was that what it was? Yeah, because we'd recently put up a lot of 5G phone masts. Actually, it must have been worldwide. You personally. Yeah, we, the upshot. Pre-upshot days. The day job. But it must have been a worldwide panic. Was it just that 5G was coinciding? I've never quite got my head around that theory. I think it's because it's mental. yeah that's probably there is quite hard to get your head around i think it's because she has her conversations with this over dinner with pia and tesla the labradoodles very concerned you know she says pretty much anything and no not their heads uh anyway so you later shared that and there was outcry and she sort of rode back in that way that people do where they're like i just think it's interesting i'm open to ideas about what's going on here you know that sort of thing um And anyway, the main tennis tour does stop during COVID, but Novak, he needs to get his fix of tennis glory.

5:48And so he decides to launch a Balkan wide tennis tour called the Adria Tour, series of tournaments. I think the first one's in Belgrade and then it goes around a bit, various other countries. And so, I mean, I remember it well. The rest of us were sort of like tuning in each day to see Chris Whitty say, you know, next slide, please. and the rules were a bit more relaxed in Belgrade. So Novak puts on this tournament where there's full crowds. There was supposed to be some social distancing. I think in the second event there was, but in Belgrade there was none in the crowd. And the players are like hugging after games.

6:24They're playing basketball together. It's just like business as usual. And people are a bit like, is this necessarily a good idea? It doesn't seem right. You've got a picture of Novak amid a crowd of like, I think ball kids I don't know if that's going to spread COVID That's about as tightly packed as you saw anyone during COVID And then there's a picture of the crowd I don't know if those thousand tightly packed people are going to spread COVID Do you remember back in the day where people were like, oh if you get a product from outside, the rumours were just insane, if you get a product from outside but you leave it in the heat, the heat will be rid of the COVID Yeah.

7:06People bring their shopping home from the supermarket and get all it. I was one of those freaks. I went to the shop. I won't say which, but you can imagine which one it is. The man with a voice like this. And I was wearing glasses and a mask and gloves. And what a loser. But everyone was, I guess, weren't they? I never did gloves. Project Fear really worked on me. Did you map out where the 5G masks were as well? I didn't quite go into that. It was more just, I was like, as someone who is deeply cynical and was very critical of the government at the time, I was like, oh my God, the government are completely right.

7:40I must just be, you know, washing my whole body in bleach every day. What an idiot. It was a mad time for all of us. I should have done the Djokovic and been like, I do not agree with what your government is saying. Should have done that. So he then, off the court, throws some parties around the tour as well. They're absolutely having it off the court. You're going to throw some parties on you. So these videos pop up of the players. They're in a nightclub. They're limboing. They're dancing topless to some pretty awful Balkan trance music. And there's a bit where they're doing the Macarena to the song, A Little Party Never Killed Nobody, which felt a bit on the nose during COVID.

8:18Ironically, it did kill some people. We forgot about that. We've got some footage here.

8:28Yes, I mean, this is... That's Djokovic doing the Macarena, isn't it? yeah yeah he is yeah this is and sort of dancing in general pretty there's quite aggressive flousing of the rules yeah there's quite a good bit where someone does the worm coming up so that's Varev yeah is Varev gonna do the worm if someone takes their top off and does the worm maybe it is Varev I remember watching him he's quite jealous though yeah this is just a nightclub yeah what a great time when was this this was like May 2012 and he's got a bucket on his head they're probably like do you think they've had anything to drink or they're just like athletes are just like oh I smelled some vodka oh my god I'm so mental that was the worm by the way we missed it sorry it was a brief worm look at the floor this is that is the most pathetic attempt I was like I was doing the worm I don't know there's another worm there they've all got their tops off now it's sort of it's like a wedding at 2am yeah there's such an amazing oh There's a bit of piano music as well.

9:30There was some limboing as well. Is this the end of the night when everyone's got a bit sad drunk? Yeah, when there's a piano. Is that Zverev on the piano? And Djokovic singing? It's such a bizarre combination of vibes at that place because they've got these chandeliers, but also it's one of the trashiest clubs. Yeah, and everyone's in ball gowns and black tie and then the shirts come off. But I do remember watching it thinking, I'm fucking jealous that they get to do that. Oh, no, and they look great. Do you remember like New Zealand just shut the whole country and then inside the country it was like full crowds and parties and I just remember being like that is so great and the water parks in Wuhan where they sort of cleared it there that was a fucking pisteck you guys can't fucking do that they were having like a parade and shit it was like fuck off you are kidding me we should actually do a do a Covid episode yeah just a Patreon on Covid is it enough time has passed now yeah I think so but I remember being quite jealous of Djokovic and it's safe to say the reaction to the Adria tour was pretty bad even before it went wrong of course our old friend Nick Kyrgios has something to say Nick you can't be dancing on tables money grabbing your way around Europe or trying to make a quick buck hosting the next exhibition that is just so selfish bro he was really kicking off about it repeatedly wasn't he he loves trolling doesn't he and he didn't like Djokovic did he he really didn't like he didn't like a lot of players I mean he called who was it was it Rublev he called him a potato that was quite funny which I think is that is an excellent it reminds me a bit of when Paddy the Baddy was like what do you think of Rishi Sunak he's like lad I think he's a mushroom it's good just sort of random food items are good yeah the mushroom's good what was the Kyrgios and Djokovic original thing he just slagged him off on court didn't he yeah I think he'd beaten him before and he was like oh he's not even good yeah there's that clip with him and Murray in lockdown it's so funny where Kyrgios is like gassing up Murray he's like bro like you're 100 % better than Novak like your back end is Novak's back end is terrible man it's actually so bad because also Kyrgios was one of the only people who had a positive record against Djokovic and maybe one of the others as well but certainly against Djokovic yeah don't know if he still does probably not I think also he just he like would take the piss out of him because he's like oh he's just trying to be liked It's so cringy, so cringe.

11:57So Kyrgios is an early critic. And to be fair, he starts to feel pretty smug with himself as the Adria tour implodes. So by the end of the second tournament in the tour, some of the spectators are starting to test positive for COVID. And initially Djokovic and his camp... Really? I don't know. That doesn't sound credible. Djokovic and his camp are quite dismissive of it. They're kind of like, no, no, that's not what you're talking about. And then some players start testing positive for it. And then Novak and his wife both test positive at the same time. And the Adreator comes crumbling down. It all has to stop.

12:32And naturally, the Djokovic clan, having been very dismissive of COVID, like that's not something to worry about, then totally flipped to being quite hysterical about it. Particularly Novak's dad, who's very quickly looking out for a scapegoat. so Novak's dad with I'd say impressive levels of narcissism and delusion he singles out Grigor Dimitriov for bringing Covid into the Adria tour I just did a thing with Grigor last week and he's a delight we can't be slagging off lovely man Novak's dad Novak's dad's true and he says okay I'm just going to do him as a slightly older Novak Djokovic okay Novak sorry Grigor Kim Sukhra I don't know what the fuck I don't like it no it sounds mocking who should I what's another voice I could do it as can I do it as Jordan Peterson sure Grigor Dimitrov came sick from God knows where and so it happened what do you mean happened he caused great damage to you and in Croatia and to us as a family and Serbia and it's bloody not okay you think you can bloody spread COVID like that oh yeah you think you can bloody get away with it no how about no so that's Novak's dad that's John Peterson yeah a bit of fun so yeah they they were basically angry with the people who'd got Covid like that's how it works I love that he came from God knows where like he's been licking toilet seats or something yeah it's like mate there's a pandemic on also suggesting that he didn't maybe get it at the Adria tour right it's perfectly conceivable and the idea he's done damage to us as a family and the nation of Serbia amazing that weird combo of like not worrying about COVID and then when you get it being like really hysterical like I've got poison in me is a very strange combo.

14:22It's yeah. We wonder where Novak gets his sort of you know maybe yeah there's something in his dad. His dad's pretty mental isn't he? We're going to have some more. Yeah there's more mental dad stuff coming up. Yeah. Anyway while while the Etro Tor scandal it's actually quite a big scandal for Djokovic I remember because he becomes probably the most famous face of like vaccine refusal and like you know like what what most people would consider irresponsible behavior basically so i think a lot of he'd always had this like he hadn't won over a lot of the tennis public or the wider public that much but this means a lot of people are hating on him right which um yeah that plays out an interesting way we'll see but the tennis does resume that blows over the adriotour thing but novak's heel turn is really just getting started so the u.s open does happened that year.

15:13It's empty stadium, but tennis is still happening. And in his fourth round tie, Novak, perhaps lacking the spice of the crowd to feed off, he grows frustrated. And in anger, he pulls a ball out of his pocket and whacks it behind him. Unfortunately for Novak, his telekinesis on this occasion is on the blink. He can't move the ball in time. And it smacks a line judge right in the jugular. They take one to the throat. We've got a clip of it here.

15:47That first bit of clip is anger in the streets. He doesn't hit it that hard. He immediately spins around. We've got a full clip.

16:01It's not that hard. Come on. She hits the deck. I've got to be honest. she is being a little bit frustrated after losing a point to Spain's Pablo Carreño Busta that is so new you know what actually I'll take it all back that is so fucking New Yorker whereas if it was at Wimbledon they'd be like I'm absolutely fine I'm so sorry for putting my throat in front of the ball sorry can I just squeeze past your ball sorry that's so fucking he has hit that quite hard yeah it's a sensitive area to be hit but I do think she's made the most of it like going falling down to the floor yeah come on stiff up a lip yeah if she wanted to downplay that and get him you know tell the umpire it's alright then yeah maybe the shock and in fact the umpire's very shocked and the the umpire disqualifies him he's booted out the tournament which I do think is a bit unfair because it was an accident he's not trying to hit obviously you shouldn't be whacking balls at anger the problem is if you are the most accurate tennis player who's ever lived, the idea that you don't have control over the ball is a little bit questionable.

17:13Do you know what I mean? Saying you can move matter with your mind will come back to bite you when you move matter in someone's neck. Yeah, I don't know. It's a difficult one, isn't it? But is it not just like you shouldn't be whacking balls around? Because he didn't mean to hit it. It's pretty much always the... Is that always the case if you hit a line judge with a ball? I think... If it's outside of play. The other... And it is very different, but there was an example of where Denis Shapovalov absolutely belted the ball into the line umpire's eye. And he's about 17 at this point. He's frustrated, loses a point, whacks it, hits the umpire.

17:46And Djokovic hit that ball at probably about 35 % pace. It's not that hard. Shapovalov hits it at 120 % pace. It goes to this guy's eye and he immediately defaults him. But I do think there's a distinction. Yeah, I think maybe it does seem a little bit harsh. Who is it who like directly hit a Lion Judge with their racket? Oh, David Nalbandian. Yes. Yeah, Queen's 2012 final. He kicks, in frustration, he kicks the... The hoarding. Yeah, the hoarding and then it goes into... That is amazing footage actually if you've got that on YouTube. If you've watched it. Because that guy... Nalbandian. I mean, look, it looks painful.

18:23The shin's not a good area to be hit but the guy's just literally like, ah, my shin! God! It's amazing.

18:36he's got it this time it's a magnificent return and i think there might be a serious issue here on the now bandion and i'm not sure exactly what happened so i might just hold on a second but i think now bandion when he pulled out wide on the return has taken a swing and i if it's his racket that has hit this gentleman here i mean oh actually do you know what sorry do you know what I've actually very unfairly called both lines people like a bit pathetic and actually when you see it now Bandian absolutely nails his knee his shin so he goes to kick the hoarding and just kicks him in the shin he just kicks the line I mean fair enough the line Josh just keeps going why is his leg bleeding he just keeps going why yeah I mean I take it back I think both those people have been very very hardly done by I mean he absolutely clatters that he keeps just going why if you're now Bandy it's quite bad I mean there's a big gash oh my god that is he's like I love that Bandy is talking to the like the referee just being like well it's difficult what am I going to do it's so funny there's the final as well so everyone's just got to go home you can just imagine all the chaps in the members area being like mate it's a fucking joke I absolutely love that clip just the way he keeps he's just going to why but i actually i think what jokovic did wasn't as bad as that no way i don't know um but yeah i didn't want to kick the guy did he i don't know isn't that a bit like being like oh and in frustration i pushed my arm forward and you happened to collide it's quite it's quite older brother has lost at fifa and then just you know i mean they just beat the shit out of them yeah it's not really on i think yeah he's got to get defaulted in both instances Also, doesn't Novak Djokovic have a bit of spice with the ball kids history where he can be a bit mean when he's in the zone?

20:32Yeah, he'll often be like, bring the balls faster. Come on, come on. Yeah, like the ball kids. Yeah, which I guess when you're in the zone. I don't know. Would you treat a ball boy like that? No, I can't really think of another sport. Would you treat a ball boy like that? I would definitely treat a ball boy. I don't think you would. You seem like you'd be very nice to the ball boys. You seem like you'd be, maybe if anything, too nice. They wouldn't be respecting me. Yeah. Thank you so much for the balls. is it alright if I have another ball yeah yeah no worries if not it's weird though it's probably the only sport where like children play a very important like obviously you have ball boys and ball girls and football or whatever but like they're not as important they're not highly trained yeah in tennis it's like they're very much part of their like official staff yeah you just think like get an adult but then I also when I see adult ones I think it's a bit pathetic yeah you see that in the US Open where they're like bigger than the players and you're like mate get a fucking job grow up get a job put a suit on put a tie on sit up straight it's in the national anthem.

21:29Anyway, so Novak's booted out of the US Open and at this point his rep is bad. Yeah, that's two very big PR hits. among casuals, filthy casuals like myself, his rep is particularly bad. But, he does recover to win the Australian Open yet again in 2021. Despite, that was the one where he had to live in like a miserable quarantine. All of them did. It's like, you know, 14 days in a holiday inn with the window taped shut. kind of vibe. I remember because that was when Bernard Tomic was putting out some quite spicy content with his girlfriend. Yeah. Yeah, I remember. Very attention-seeking. Yeah, what was he saying again?

22:06They did a sex tape, didn't they? Yeah, but they didn't really, it was sort of attention-seeking. Bernard Tomic is just like a little attention-seeking boy. I quite enjoy it. Yeah, he's the ultimate troll. Yeah. Is his girlfriend a tennis player as well? No. Well, they're not together anymore. Let's talk about the sex tape. So what happened? There was a photo where she was lying on her front and he was like looming over her bum with his mouth this is being searched in a place of work no no no do type it in I'm ready it looked like he was yeah looming over her search it it looked like he was about to ring her is how I remember it okay nice I can think of how else to describe it specific category of pornography ass to mouth ass to mouth human centipede Bernard Thomas porn on Pornhub that comes up can we try and view it on a non-porn maybe google images I don't want to get on xhamster.com oh wow yeah he's basically biting her arse cheek sure and she's an attractive woman of course she is I've got eyes she then posted a video of him like smashing up her laptop sorry has she got a tattoo of herself on her arm is that what that is you're right that is tragic you're right that's her own face sorry if that isn't a red flag what that is what's her name oh Vanessa Sierra yeah sounds like a fake name um yeah I don't know what she's up to now they broke up she posted that video of him smashing her laptop up do you remember that no Bernard Tomic during the hotel quarantine and I always felt it looked a bit staged but then she later was like yeah he was an absolute twat he smashed my laptop up so who knows um but anyway it was a weird tournament because they were all getting just like cabin fever going a bit crazy in their hotel rooms yeah and they were all posting videos of themselves like practicing against their hotel room Oh, I do remember.

23:54And it was a bit like, yeah, I know it's COVID, but Australia, can you just fucking chill out a bit? Anyway, Novak overcomes that bizarre experience to win the Australian Open. And this is actually the time where he breaks the record for the longest stretch at world number one. So he's the GOAT, really, at this point. Yeah, yeah. And he celebrates with a big old street party in Belgrade. Lovely scenes. But as he edges closer to goat status, Novak becomes a target for some nasty characters. So in March of that year, a Serbian model comes forward claiming that she was offered£50 ,000 to seduce Novak Djokovic as part of a blackmail plot.

24:38Did they try it on Bernard Tomic and it was too easy, really? You need a proper challenge. It was Vanessa Sierra all along. This model's called Natalia Skekic and she was speaking to the very reputable sounding magazine Svet and Scandal Svet means world, I looked it up, world and scandal you can imagine the type of magazine you know the ones like That's Life magazine and they're just like a ghost haunted my bum sort of story just like weird shit is that a description of a Bernard Thomas anyway Svet and Scandal interviewed her and she said that she met an acquaintance in London and this acquaintance asked her to secretly film herself sleeping with the world number one but she turned them down she said i laughed expecting to say it was a joke but the man was very serious i felt very offended and humiliated what's really entertaining about this i think is the fact that someone who's appeared in a scandal-based magazine go i was off to do this but i actually have more morals than that you're like sorry you're saying this in swetten scandal i'm not not too humiliated to sell my story yeah supermarket tabloid yeah that's blackmailing him what are they blackmailing him over i think the idea is you you catch him cheating it's a honey trap right is that what a honey trap yeah a honey trap is specifically sleeping with someone my friend told me an amazing thing about so obviously the honey traps were a popular tool for the soviets during the cold war right but apparently they gave up using them on french um spies because the frenchman they'd be like we're going to tell your wife and the frenchman be like go for it that's so funny traps don't work in France.

26:16A ticket is given, really. Yeah, yeah. It's like, she won't fucking care. That was brilliant. So good. But yeah, it was a honey trap. So basically the idea is you sleep with someone and now they've got compromising material showing you, I guess you film it or whatever, and then you can blackmail them. Novak's very happily married, though. Yeah, I mean, there's no suggestion he does anything in the story. I mean, she doesn't even go to him. But it's kind of interesting that there's these shady figures in the background looking for a piece of him. I mean, I wonder... Do you think it was the old Mafia lunch?

26:46Was it one of those where You pay off your entire debt but you forget to do the last 7p And then over the next 20 years It stacks up and now it's 50 grand Yeah fascinating I like that she still managed to get her Payday out of this though Yeah she turned down The offer and still sold the story Sweat and Scandal probably not giving you 50 grand No Do you think I'm going to give you a grand To your story Because nothing happened I don't think you're getting much if she actually shagged him yeah you're getting low it's a story about her integrity someone we who's we don't even know who she is she's like I just need you all I need to come out and clear my name we're like you could have done but I didn't you are you're suggesting that we scrape the barrel for stories

27:30that's an interesting little vignette of how the student loans company paid an influencer to try and blackmail Novak Djokovic

27:40he does dodge this blackmail plot though and And by January 2022, the world is beginning to emerge from the COVID lockdowns as Novak flies back to Melbourne for the Australian Open. And, you know, Australia, they're still kind of hanging on to the lockdown rules, still pretty tight. They do. Relax. He's allowed to come, but it requires him to be vaccinated to enter. somehow though Novak's managed to get an exemption because obviously he's you know he's always refused to take a vaccine um but when the Australian public discover that he's been given this exemption there's quite a lot of uproar and as he's in the air Australian press are debating this is you know there's a lot of anger in the public and when he lands he's hauled aside by the Australian border for us.

28:34They like to haul, to be fair. Yeah. We've all seen the television. Have you ever watched daytime TV? I love those shows. Yeah, that's great. Yeah. This man might be hoarding 400 kilograms of cocaine. They're absolutely that bastard. they are. I mean, if they'd, if they'd got the episode with Djokovic, that would have been TV gold. Oh my God. That would be such a funny sketch. The like border control version. And it's Djokovic. Is this you, sir? pointing at the passport making him empty his luggage in front of them what is this Manuka honey you're not allowed to bring algae from outside of Australia he's got a bag full of flora and fauna I'm sorry we're going to have to confiscate this what do you mean it gives me power exactly it was literally I remember this event it was unfolding in real time they were like he's got this exemption but he's on the plane yeah i remember reading the news before he'd seen it and then everyone was like laughing at him about it and they were like you know there was like uh there was that thing where alex dimenor was laughing at it or he just did he wasn't sort of explicitly saying this guy is ridiculous but he was just kind of like rolling his eyes a bit and then jokovic was like i don't ever forget and then like the next year he played him and then he beat him like 6-1 6-1 6-1 or whatever yeah yeah he was so into it so does he still hate dimenor because i guess i guess that's the implication you know that's casey bolster's boyfriend yeah i get the feeling that he's a sort of person who holds grudges yeah yeah yeah i think it's that thing though it's like i don't know it's tough at the top isn't it and he wants to just sort of be uh yeah i don't know he uses it as fuel doesn't he hang on so what happened so they so he's he's he's pulled aside by border force officials and they detain him for eight hours uh at which point they decide that actually this exemption is invalid.

30:29He doesn't have the right evidence for it. So they decided to cancel his visa and he's thrown into this immigration hotel, which you know, obviously this is an incredibly stressful situation for Djokovic. But fortunately for him, he has his calm, level-headed dad to speak out on his behalf. Through the medium of Jordan Peterson. Exactly. This was his dad's interview with Serbian TV. They're bloody holding my son captive. If they don't release him in the next half an hour, we will fight them on the street, eh? Jesus was crucified and everything that was done to... That actually is a very good crossover joke.

31:09Yeah, it is actually something he would say. Everything that was done to him and he endured. He is still alive among us. They're trying to bloody crucify Novak in the same way, eh? To underestimate him. To bring him to his knees. So he thinks it's a plot. He does. Yeah, it sounds like an establishment plot. Because what? Because they don't like what Novak stands for. Yeah, his mom has a slightly different motive for this. Before the season even kicks off, soccer fans are already making predictions. Who wins the league? Who qualifies for Europe? I can't really remember it, but let's see if I've still got it somewhere. This is a clear political attack on Novak Djokovic so that he doesn't win and doesn't become the greatest of all time. Get to defrost that one. That's great. That's really good. So that's Novak Djokovic's mum, but as Theresa May. But as Theresa May. Yeah. Like a sort of weird pantomime where it's like, Theresa May is Djokovic's mum I'd watch that sounds like your next project yeah seeds of your next project I love star stories so much I would love to do that like we did tennis star stories that would be great yeah do you think Novak Djokovic's mum is scraping the mould off the top of his jam

34:13anyway so hang on so she's saying they don't like him as the world number one yeah So I think at this Australian Open, Novak would have either become like one of the most Grand Slams or leveled with Nadal. So she thinks that this is they've got a political agenda against him doing that. I think she's right in a sense. The world is against Novak. I think she's right in a sense, which is A, the sort of general people didn't want Djokovic to outrun Federer and Nadal. B, I think people were really angry with him about his vaccine thing. and like, was he treated fairly there by the rules by Australia?

34:50Because if he hadn't been high profile, that wouldn't have happened. He would have just got his exemption and gone through. Yeah, I mean, would he have been given an exemption in the first place? Do you remember why he got the exemption? He said that he tested positive two weeks before, which was like having had a vaccine. But then people were like, but you were at this event the day after that. So it was like, was it a fake certificate saying he'd had COVID or had he just had COVID? He just, his body was so optimized. He just had it and then he was fighting. I don't know. But it's, I feel like it's quite a big cultural thing there.

35:22And like, you know, they've got like tall poppy syndrome is quite a big thing in Australia. Right. And Djokovic being this guy who's won so much and like being like, I should be an exception to the rules. Like, I just don't think that really culturally flies. Yeah. Down under. Yeah. You know what I mean? Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. You weirdly got sympathy at this point, I think. It was, it was, yeah, there was a big sort of, I don't know, divide, I think. It was just a huge public debate. And even Scott Morrison, the Australian Prime Minister, wades into it. He tweets. Bob, let's do this as Bob Catter.

35:53You know, the guy who, in that famous meme where he's like, he's talking about gay marriage. Look, a thousand blossoms bloom as far as I'm concerned. I don't want to talk about it because every day in Queensland, a crocodile rips someone in shreds. That guy. Yeah, perfect. Rules are rules, you know, especially when it comes to our borders. But I don't want to talk about it because every day in Serbia, someone eats Manuka honey and thinks that they're an exception. Yeah. So Scott Morrison tweeted that. I may have slightly embellished that quote. We did promise at the end of part one there'll be some quite interesting accidents.

36:26Boy, oh boy, have there been. I've got Slavov Zizek in the arsenal, if you like any of that. Yeah, we could do the next one. Should we do Novak's dad? So after Scott Morrison's intervention, Novak's dad is sort of wondering, like you know you've got the prime minister of that country is against you so where do you where do you turn to next and he has one last roll of the dice as a slap of the jack i call on queen elizabeth the leader of the commonwealth to intervene and protect the human rights of my son and to stop the political persecution carried out against him since he came to australia it's a good one that's a really good one it's hard to do that I don't know I think it's just an impressionist dream isn't it anyway well the substance of that substance was that Novak's dad yeah Novak's dad called on Queen Elizabeth to intervene and free Novak from his from his hotel on the way out yeah it's one of her last I know it's her last Australian Open.

37:38She sort of had to.

37:42Liz Truss was about to come rolling. Yeah. Yeah. So I can imagine the Queen's got other shit to work on. She unfortunately for Novak she did. She had big issues on her plate at this point. There'd been a constitutional crisis cause because the Queen abused her power. Let Novak get into your fucking country. One of my better impressions. Let Novak in you twats. I can imagine they're liking Djokovic. Didn't she have quite unpredictable views on who she liked? Yes that's true. She didn't like Thatcher, did she? Yeah, I think not. She liked Michael Owen was her favourite player because he was very clean, which Djokovic does too.

38:13Yeah, he does a very clean, I think. Barely a hair out of place. Excellent hair. Yeah. It doesn't work. Yeah, it doesn't work. She doesn't grant him a royal pardon. God's sake. There's a bit of back and forth. Djokovic appeals the decision, but he eventually is deported out of Australia. There's actually some speculation that he's going to be banned from the country for three years. I think that's what happens normally if you are deported. but he does return for the Australian Open the following year and wins it. Of course. Redemption. So he didn't play in that year before because he got kicked out.

38:47Yeah. That's fucking... Yeah, I mean, this is the thing. He also wasn't allowed to play at the US Open that year because of vaccine rules. Yeah, the embarrassing rules, yeah. So he could have won even more Grand Slams. Yeah, exactly. And would have. And would, yeah, yeah. I mean, Australian Open, I think he's won 10 Australian Opens. Yeah. They have that side in Australia where they want, like, maybe, to be honest, maybe what they were doing is completely fair, but I remember thinking at the time that it was, like, really OTT on the rules. And they do have that side of it in Australia, don't they?

39:16They're like conservative. They're socially, quite socially conservative. Yeah, there's, like, a lot of rules around, like, drinks in bars and stuff, isn't there? You can't order doubles and... Yeah, there's a curfew. I remember when I went to Sydney. There's a curfew as well. You can't... Yeah, curfew. But if you look too drunk, then you can't... And they quite like saying no. Yeah, at the Australian Open, don't they? introduced that court last year that says like a bar overlooking one of the courts. Yeah, with EDM. They're confusing, but I remember thinking at this time, it's a bit like, come on, let's move on.

39:46Yeah. But then like, most of the Australians you see in London are like absolutely battered all the time. Maybe it's because of that they have to get away from it. They're like drunk sailors on shore leave. I mean, they're almost literally. Yeah. Wimbledon though, has slightly more lax regulations and in between those that whole Australian Open saga he beats Nick Herios in that famous Wimbledon final the 700 drinks bro 700 drinks bro final that's sort of what it's best known for and that was where they buried the hatchet afterwards yeah they have a bit of a bromance really after that bromance of the super villains yeah they're really friends after this yeah it was like we're not so different you and I kind of mingled to it wasn't it yeah it was really sweet then they were like oh we're going to play doubles together and stuff but I think again key at least in Britain key moment for like the rehabilitation of Novak's rep or like him becoming popular it was like he's been through it in Australia yeah maybe he was with Dick but they were a bit unfair on him and now he's come back and he's been quite he's very magnanimous in his interview after the final I think he really won over a lot of people there and also you know since when he lost to Alcaraz he was extremely professional magnanimous like you know he was like oh god this hurts it hurts man but great win you're fantastic and actually like i don't know if he gets enough credit for that because i think it is very hard in those moments to be really like yeah he he is good in that in that sense i think it's also around this time that that video went round of djokovic's coaches mixing up this mysterious drink for him so there's a few different videos of that they're him and his his dad and coach whatever in the stands pouring these weird sort of mixtures into a bottle which they then deliver to Djokovic on the court there's one video in particular where they spot a camera in there's this this video in particular uh his coaches notice that somebody's filming them mixing up this drink and hide it from the camera they're all sort of leaning in front of it it's exactly like if anyone's ever seen the video of Maradona doing coke in the dugout when he's a manager and his team spot the cameras and all like block it and kind of act like they're just standing there.

42:02It's exactly like that. They're like fucking around with bottles and then suddenly they like point at the camera and then it's like, what are they hiding? I honestly think though it's just edge. Like these people are going to be so paranoid about being like 1 % better if they're like, oh I've seen the exact bit of creatine that he puts in his, you know what I mean? Like a lion's mane. Yeah, yeah exactly. This one milligram of lion's mane mushroom with two milligrams of algae. If Nadal knows that, then I am fucked. You know, like I genuinely think that is probably how I think. They're not going to be mixing anabolic steroids in the fucking No, yeah, they're not doing it in the stadium if they were going to do it.

42:37Yeah. But then it's quite weird because then there's the other video which we've got here where Novak's like asking them, what do I do with the bottle? And he's like, almost like inhaling, blowing it. Really? Yeah. I mean, I'm sure it's nothing untoward. oh I have seen this maybe it's smelling salts yeah water would you he's just saying shall I have another one there isn't he

43:06god he's really like a machine isn't he yeah it's like oil oil change he's always pristine isn't he clothing wise he is you're right there is never there is never a hair out of place but he is he's learned he also the way that he conserves energy he's not running and he runs it exactly the right speed to the ball he hits the ball at exactly the right pace it's yeah it's kind of unnerving that's where the like slightly robotic reputation comes from even though the rest of him's too emotional to be a robot yeah it's like playing against him is like i think a lot of players say he shrinks the court because he's so quick and he just makes you miss playing him is like playing pong basically like he's just pong coming back yeah he's literally just pong how does he explain the bottle so he he describes it as a magic potion my physio prepares in his lab I like that it's quite mysterious quite right whatever is in the bottle it works though and in 2023 Djokovic wins his 23rd Grand Sam at the French Open and finally surpasses Nadal's record haul so if there was any question about him being the goat then my goat my goat yeah then then he's definitely got it now i mean nadar will always be the goat on clay but jokovic is the guy the goat the goat the billy goat does that he feels like he used to do that thing where he talks about like spending time with wolves i feel like he spent time with goats you know yeah i am here in the mountains learning about the physicality of the goats and the way that they are able to channel the milk into uh into many products for making the body or do you think maybe he just does one of those goat yoga things oh yeah yeah it's busy you just do yoga in a near a baby goat what did he do with wolves i went to spend time with the wolves in the hills yes that kind of thing he loves like getting back into nature yeah quite like that quite primal i like yeah primal and gothic in a bit maybe there's a toxic man inside of me but i want to do that eastern europe lends itself well to that vibe doesn't it because they've got wolves and they've got like amazing mountains and yeah yeah yeah i like that it's romantic um i guess now he's in his sort of elder statesman era where still winning a lot does it feel like yeah yeah fingers are being prized off yeah a little bit i think he's he doesn't look as fast as he used to because i mean god like he's up against alcaraz who's like a duracell bunny and like you know you don't you lose a step of pace as you age right and like but he's still unbelievable like i think he maybe has another slam yeah and he i guess he can even sort of laugh at himself a little bit we've kind of seen it with the like the kyrgios interview onwards but he still can't quite let go of that old intensity.

46:02Last year, a clip emerged of him screaming at a fan, shut the fuck up! And he then reverted to his favourite Serbian swear phrase, which was, fuck your mother in a pussy. That was a direct translation I did online. A pussy. It might be her, but yeah, in any pussy. A conduit pussy, I believe. A proxy pussy. Yeah, I mean, I've translated that directly, so it probably is a bit more elegant in Serbian. but it's just like a standard swear. I've noticed Spanish and Eastern European languages have very creative, like, sweary terms. In Holland as well. Really? They say get cancer to each other. Really?

46:44Yeah. They really don't. There's no chill. Is that like a kind of how Australians say cunt to mean mate? I think so. Is it like that? Yeah. I think quite a few of the Dutch ones are just different diseases. Really? But is it like, has it become almost friendly? You know, like the Australian cunt thing. I don't know. Great to see you again. Get cancer. I don't know if it is that. Yeah, it's pretty wild. I think I prefer fuck your mother in a pussy. Yeah, I think it's quite... It is Croatian. There's also a variation of it that Luca Modric, who's Croatian, which is a dog fucks your mother in the pussy.

47:16But it's not like directed at anyone. It's just like, it's like going, oh, fucking hell. I think ass wearing is weak. No, because we're an embarrassment as a nation. Look at the three of us. We're just three soy boys just sitting here. you know, next time you stub your toe,

47:35he also, there's another clip where he yells, I will fuck all your mothers, all of them. But again, that's kind of ambitious. You know, I kind of, I kind of respect that. Yeah. Yeah. You know, he's 24 grand slams. I can do all your moms. I know I have. Yes, I have got this experience. I must go to, I will have sex with everybody. Yeah. Nadal can do that. Yeah. Nadal, his body will, will play. that's why he's on the vegan diet yeah he could have sex if i got all your mothers on clay only could he do it on grass just like well i mean it's not the guy it's not the story of the guy who stopped having sex you know for the only time you know i've never stopped having sex apart from when my back was ruined you know against blake's mom

48:24another sign that the old novak is still going strong was last year at wimbledon when he played Holger Rune and completely misunderstood fans chanting Rune's name. I mean, like if you're a cricket fan, they do it for Joe Root as well. They go for Holger Rune, they go Rune. But it's not a boo. No, it's not a boo. Novak, being quite a thin-skinned guy when it comes to public criticism, he took that pretty badly and he had a response for them in the post-match interview. You seem to enjoy your interaction with them as well. Well, to all the fans that have respect and have stayed here tonight, thank you very much from the bottom of my heart, I appreciate it.

49:04There's a bot coming. But!

49:14And to all those people that have chosen to disrespect the player, in this case me, have Have a good night.

49:31Good night. Good night. Very good night.

49:38I'm hoping that they were just commenting on Runa and that they weren't disrespecting you. They were. They were. They were. I don't accept it. No, no, no. I know they were cheering for Rune, but that's an excuse to also boo. Listen, I've been on the tour for more than 20 years. So trust me, I know all the tricks. I know how it works. It's fine. It's fine. It's okay. I focus on the respectful people that have respect, that pay the ticket to come and watch the night. He is now getting booed, isn't he? No, it's just a boo. There's an irony in that, in that he was like, thanks a lot for booing me.

50:16And no one was, and then actually people did start booing him. I think he's completely misjudged that I don't know I kind of think that people took that opportunity to went originally in the match the thing is it's like also at Wimbledon I remember watching Mackamara at the time talk about this and he was like well you know the guy's just got every single year people he goes to these places he's the underdog everyone's cheering against him and eventually he's just like well fuck you he didn't say that on the BBC but I don't know I've got time for that because I think he does people were all every final he played people were cheering obviously Murray like people are going to be cheering against him but like Federer as well like every single year no one wanted him to win so I get that but do you think he is wrong I think he's incorrect in the micro but in the macro he's right basically but it's also like was there general sentiment against Djokovic in that match yes I think there was but I don't think the rune was specifically against him but yeah it's funny to me that he's picked on the wrong thing, but you're definitely right about the general sentiment.

51:19Like, yeah, directionally, his attitude is correct, but like, yeah, in the micro... It's like kicking a line judge in the shin, you know? That poor guy. I can't believe how hard I went on that guy. I was like, oh, what pussy. He's like, oh, my leg. He's literally just like, blood pouring from his leg. Yeah, if that guy listens, and God knows he probably does, and the line umpire with the jock of which I think, I am very sorry for what I said. I take it all back. Yeah, I do like it when people are like, ouch, my leg. yeah i think for me that kind of shows all the sides of novak jokovic because like he's kind of being good natured about it but he's also being a bit thin-skinned and i don't know i quite enjoy that always like a sports star who's just like being a bit real and honest in an interview and not just being like i'm gonna be really boring and stage managed so yeah good on him for that and authenticity is interesting and like people i think particularly in the uk can really smell that out it's why like um like alcaraz for example is just the happiest guy and he's just like every match he finishes he's like well I try to hit the ball and I hit and I have you for that and that's it but you're like that's exactly who he is right it's like I hit the ball out I'm still happy I hit it in very happy for that and you're like I think the issue with Djokovic maybe is that people have felt that sometimes he's kind of masking or but he's complex so it's hard to kind of you know like there's a big basket of different things in him do you think Novak is the most of any like sporting great, the most underappreciated.

52:47Yeah. Like, I can't think of someone else who's got like villains. He's kind of come out the other side of that now, I think. I think he'll get a lot of, this is coming out during Women, but he gets a lot of love now. But, you know what I mean? Like, for someone who's had people root against them for that long, outside of wrestling, where like being the villain's the point. Yeah. I struggle to think of someone else.

53:12Schumacher, Michael Schumacher. Was he that much? of a hated figure. he was quite, I mean, I was fairly young, but like, he was a bit of a villain, he was like a bit aggressive with people and a bit like, people didn't like his like, slightly like, driven bloodless thing. There's some similarity there. Yeah, there is. People's attitudes have softened on him. Yeah, that's for sure. I, yeah, I don't know, I think with Djokovic, I think I would agree with that. I think for the amount he's achieved, and also don't forget that the amount he's done for a sport, like he, he's very, he has been an ambassador for tennis.

53:44I think he has got a lot of shit for that, which is tough. He's sort of the Ronaldo, Cristiano Ronaldo of tennis, really, in terms of like the upping that level and his like my body is a temple vibe. I think I prefer Novak as a guy. Yeah, me too. Yes. I guess I was saying. Yeah, that's true. Yeah, the divisiveness. All right. I think that's all we've got time for, Josh. Do we give a verdict? Oh, yeah, we do, don't we? I mean, wrong or not is the tradition. Oh, right. I think I'm wrong. Weird on a stag do though. Oh yeah, you don't want him on a stag. It's a brother-in-law or the cousin on the stag do who's like quite intense.

54:24Yeah. I had to go to the mountains for three hours earlier today to focus on my body. And I'm here in the pub, but I will not have... Do you have any wheat-free vodka that has not been near grains? I don't like it here. It's messing with my energy.
