Key claims
Noel and Liam’s childhood trouble escalated to fights, drug use, and petty crime; a head injury made Liam “hear music differently.” Alan McGee (Creation Records) signed Oasis before they had official releases, aiming to market them as reckless rock-and-roll. The “Man Who Can” allegedly supplied drugs, groupies, and leaked debauchery to the press. Oasis signed major contracts without reading them while already hyped by media.
Notable examples
Glastonbury encounter with Noel (“fuck off”); Oasis barging onto a Glasgow label-scouting gig; deportation after a ferry brawl in transit to Amsterdam; haunted-studio prank with fishing line; Definitely Maybe’s instant No.1 debut; two 15-year-olds visiting Liam’s house and receiving a platinum disc.

Liam Gallagher once said, Every time I look in the mirror, God looks back. But I don't remember God ever snorting crystal meth on stage or ripping the door off Eric Cantona's brand new Mercedes.
49Then again, God never headlined Nebworth. And he's got a shit-fucking-beard. From benders with Steve Coogan to doing coke in the Queen's Toilet, this is the story of Oasis, a family full of eccentrics. Welcome to an Upshot special on the biggest fucking rock and roll band in the world. I'm Jack. Hello, Zach. Hello, Jack. How are you doing? Fantastic. And we've got JP. I ain't in the sunshine. Hey, lads. They'll love that. JB you've been knocking about the way since not not that long ago yeah I mean yeah me and Noel have had a moment it was Glastonbury two years ago and my mate we were at the other stage and my mate comes up to me and he goes you are not going to believe who just fucking walked past and I just looked in his eye and I knew it was fucking Noel Gallagher and I was like which direction and he was like that way and I just dropped my drink and just fucking sprinted sprinted for about 150 meters and there was this guy with his hood up with his glasses on walking on his own and I kind of like got in front of him I looked around it was Noel I put my arm around him and I was like what is a cunt like you cutting around Glastonbury like this and he goes fuck off I was like I love you I'll see you later didn't you ask him they're getting back together and he just said fuck off yeah yeah yeah I was like are you getting back together and he's just like fuck off and I was like oh I've just met my hero but that was fucking great I feel like that's a pretty authentic yeah yeah that's what you want is it Noel or Liam Noel Noel I got back and I was like told my mates and they were like that was the most Noel Gallagher thing ever yeah He just fucking smashed it.
21Yeah, they say never meet your heroes, but he was being him. It was great. Yeah. It was great. And quickly before we begin, and no, this isn't a fucking sports episode. There's going to be some sports characters, but it's Oasis. Yeah, fuck it. It's a fucking Oasis we're talking about. Before we begin, Zach is looking for a ticket. Yes. I spent probably about 10 hours in the queue to get tickets when they came out and didn't succeed. Unlike you two. Yeah. Lucky bastards. I can hear a small warning. Yeah, if anyone is listening and has a spare ticket knocking around, or if one of your mates is incapacitated on the day for whatever reason.
58If anyone's out there, then... If anyone's out there, then... Gwigsie, if you're listening, please. Right. Then please do sort me out. Yeah, sort him out. Sort him out, please. Right, let's get into it, Zach. Take us back to the very beginning. I will. So Noel and Liam were, of course, born in Manchester. There's a five-year age gap between them. Noel was 67, Liam was born in 72. They've also got an older brother, Paul. But Liam and Noel, they shared a bedroom when they were growing up, although they actually weren't particularly close as kids. There's quite a big age gap when you're kids. What they did have in common, though, was causing a lot of trouble.
36So their mum was a dinner lady at their primary school, and apparently she was just constantly getting pulled aside by teachers, giving them an earful about what Noel and Liam had been up to. She actually says that most of them weren't that angry with her. They were more just they felt sorry for her for having to deal with these two kids. Apparently when Liam was six, his class teacher pulled his mum over and admitted to her that Liam's antics had led her to taking Valium every night to get to sleep. Six years old. Six years old. Sedate him. Yeah. Yeah, I think he's probably the one who needs it.
15Secondary school, not much better. Both of them are bunking off a lot, getting into fights. Noel gets expelled for throwing a flower bomb at a teacher, which he does actually later go back and say it wasn't him that threw it, it was someone else in the class. How do you make a flower bomb? Just dip it in water first. I don't know. Isn't it a balloon full of flowers? Is it, yeah. I can't remember. It's quite the sort of thing you do to a disgraced politician. or your geography teacher Noel was ahead of the curve so he gets expelled for that Liam also gets suspended for three months for fighting outside they spend most of their time hanging around in this local park sniffing glue, smoking weed, actually Tony McCarroll who later becomes the Oasis drummer says that he first got to know Noel in that park when he saw him and a group of mates falling out of trees while high on glue.
10Good times. Yeah. Bit of glue. Bit of glue in the park. You won't go wrong. As he gets a bit older, Noel starts hanging out as well with the Man City hooligan firms. I think he still does, doesn't he? He does a bit. I don't know if he's quite as rough as a bumble. He's in the posh seats now. Yeah, true. I think he's got a box at Etihad. Yeah, I wouldn't be surprised. And yeah, he's like travelling home and away to matches, getting into a few hairy situations I don't know if he was scrapping himself that much but definitely around that that crowd and both him and Liam are getting into trouble a lot with the police as they're growing up so apparently they used to break into cars steal motorbikes when he's 13 Noel gets six months probation for robbing a corner shop we think that's like pick and mix yeah smash and grab yeah I mean he's 13 I reckon it's fags and bobbins yeah Fags and porno mags, isn't it?
06Yeah, yeah. But it's actually while he's on this probation, he's not got a lot else to do, that Noel starts teaching himself to play guitar. And he's just sort of imitating his favourite songs, The Smiths, The Beatles. And he gets really obsessed with that. And from this point on, he's just constantly playing guitar in his room. Liam is not really into it at all, though. And apparently he's always taking the piss out of Noel for being a bit weird and playing his fucking music. Sad act. Yeah. Liam's a lot more into football at this point until one day when he's about 14 or 15 and it's after school he's smoking in the park with some mates and some lads from another school come down and start hassling him and a little scrap breaks out and they end up hitting him over the head with a hammer.
00Fucking hell. So Liam ends up in hospital and he actually does an interview afterwards where he says, after that, I just started hearing music differently. That'll do you. Well, so he thinks it like changed his brain chemistry. Yeah. Could have gone either way. You hear about these people who have like a severe concussion and then start speaking a Jamaican accent. Didn't that guy wake up Chinese? Yeah, he's speaking a Chinese accent. These ones about people who've got like, they wake up and they can just speak fluent Mandarin. Yeah, they've learned a language. Mental. Also, Noel learned to sing like that.
32Sorry, Liam. learn to sing like that yeah yeah yeah um so yeah he he's really into music from this point on similar sort of taste to noel um but he doesn't play an instrument and they actually what he gets into see is there's this quite formational moment for them where both liam and noel go along to a stone roses gig i think it was spike island wasn't it yeah yeah yeah and they go separately to this gig but they're both there and liam in particular is is just like overwhelmed by ian brown the lead singer's vocal style which is quite unusual as well a bit like his and from that point on he decides you know i'm gonna be the lead singer of rock band and i'm gonna be a superstar i think hearing this like unusual vocal style kind of makes him realize that you know you don't have to be you know have the vocal range of like a traditional singer um um and yeah it's quite a quite a big moment for him you can see how ian brown's vibe inspires him yeah in general yeah yeah um so at this point he's still working on the side so early 90s liam takes on noel's old job working at a car valet service.
54Somehow they managed to blag their way into cleaning the Man United players' cars. So apparently their mate who ran the business one time had collared Fergie outside the training ground and said to him that they'd do his car for free if he let him into the car park to do the players as well. Very Fergie, that. Which, yeah, Fergie bites his hand off. There's some accounts of them nicking cash out of the glove box of the players. and actually Brian McClare tells a story about Liam used to come over to his house to service his car sometimes and apparently he had a fondness for penguin bars so as he was cleaning the car he had to treat himself to a little penguin Brian had come out and give him a slip of a little penguin cup of tea and a penguin cup of tea and a penguin there's another story he was shitting himself one time apparently because he really fucked up Paul Ince's car he was trying to clean around the wheel arches and for some reason did it by scrubbing it with an iron wool brush and just like ripped off all the paint another time they had Eric Cantona's brand new Mercedes into their garage it was just after he joined United and they'd been cleaning his car and he must have said like I need to get some new tyres on this and they said they'd sort him out and instead of taking it into a legit place they just take it to their mate Biggin's garage carriage and get him to do it and he like raises raises the car up on his like hydraulic ramp thing and it falls off the edge with the driver's door open and just takes the door clean off eric hansen i've brand new bike how you explain that to eric king eric so they initially just like what are we going to do and eventually decide they're just going to try and weld it back on back on so apparently it just looked an absolute state that's big isn't it yeah big lad I think he pops up quite a lot in the story yeah and then they start to get into the music industry a little bit so in 1991 Noel goes touring with the Manchester band Inspiral Carpets he's a roadie yeah yeah yeah sound engineer wasn't he I think initially he was just a roadie lugging speakers and then they gave him a bit more responsibility yeah he learns a lot there they teach him to play Come on Feel the Noise by Slade, which is why Oasis play it live sometimes.
15Apparently they do sort of sometimes humiliate him a little bit. Like they make him sand down drumsticks and he's a bit resentful of it. But it's eye-opening about like how shit actually works in recordings and stuff. He's 24 at this point, so he's not like a teenager. Meanwhile, Liam has joined a band called Rain with their mates, Paul Bonehead Arthurs, Paul Gwigsey McGuigan and Tony McCarroll the drummer that we mentioned before so those three had already had the band then Liam joins it as their lead singer and they go and play their first gig as a quartet now and Noel goes down to watch and he's actually quite impressed I mean he had no idea that his brother could sing or had this like stage presence and he's like okay there's something to this and obviously apparently he didn't want to admit that he liked it he went back and was like you're fucking shit so is that that's all the initial Oasis fan members yeah that's the Oasis line up and then the last piece is Noel who says to them basically after this gig he's like look you're fucking shit but I can make you great let me write the songs he's already written a few songs by this point and let me be in charge of like all the sound and the creative direction yeah and he says to them let me write your songs and I'll take you to superstardom otherwise you'll rot here in Manchester so it's quite a compelling sell and they're like yeah fuck it we don't really know what we're doing noel's older he's been on tour with like a band we consider massive and at that point he also persuades them to change their name to oasis which is the name of a swindon leisure center where i've been there have you yeah yeah yeah still open it's still open it's fucking amazing yeah did you go there on an oasis fan tour pilgrimage well my auntie used to tell me that story about it being named after oasis and i never believed it but yeah i think it is actually true yeah so inspirational carpets played there and they had a tour poster with all the dates on it.
06Yeah. And one of the dates was at Oasis. Yeah. So they got like Oasis shit up in there. No, there's nothing in there. It's like an old 90s leisure centre with like the best like water slide shit. I love it. Oh, really? They are great. Yeah. I guess maybe Oasis fanboys aren't the crowd they're trying to. No. They're quite right that they haven't done anything. They've got a shrine. You can imagine some like absolute mega fans like turning up there to try and see something, but it's just a fucking. Although. Calling the slides slide away. Ah. Mr. Trickler.
38Someone's going to take that place over and ruin it. I'll then turn it into a theme park, private equity-backed theme park. Anyway, Noel is happy to use Liam as a front man, even though he's very grudging in his respect for Liam's abilities. He recognizes that Liam is very good looking in a way that kind of appeals to lots of different people. And Liam's got this amazing voice and stage presence. So he's actually fine with that. I mean, he says later about their respective voices. Mine's Alfa Guinness on a Tuesday. Liam's voice is 10 shots of tequila on a fucking Friday night. Fucking right. It's about right.
15Noel has got a nice voice, but it's silky and gentle. It does always leave the question of like, what would Oasis have been without Noel? And Liam Gallagher was asked, would they have been any good? Much later. Here was his answer. The band would have been a success without Noel. No Well, who knows? It's like Would Jesus Christ Been a fucking pervert If he had a crisp packet On his head? No one knows Did he? So no one knows Maybe I'd still be in a band If it weren't for no I'd still be doing my stuff Maybe it's good or not Unbelievable Because I never He's so fucking good He's just got so many lines Yeah Yeah It's just such a creative way Of using language Jesus Christ Has been a pita-barger Chris Packett on his head I mean for researching this episode I've read so many just like Gallagher quips and it is mental like you can't fake that wit he's just got it he's just got it anyway so after this so the bang on that point there was a good one he said about Wayne Rooney he described Wayne Rooney as I think it was like a boiled egg with like shredded wheat on his head there was a potato with shredded wheat on top so fucking good so now we've got the original Oasis lineup and they start playing live everywhere loads of touring they're getting a bit of a cult following they release a demo tape of live recordings people love it their sound live is really good Noel keeps it like very simple songs that people can basically sing along to it's quite poppy really and they're playing live for about 18 months until they learn that a record label is going to be scouting for talent at this gig in Glasgow.
02And they decide this is our opportunity. So they scrape together all their savings, hire a van, drive four hours up there. They get there and the doorman won't even let them in. They're not on the bill for this gig, but they're just like, we are fucking playing this gig. So they barge past the doorman and just barge their way on stage, play four songs. They were the opening act, right? Yeah, they opened the whole gig, but they basically got in before the start time and just started playing. and after the gig that went pretty fucking well where's this record label man this coked up bloke ginger fella sidles up to them and it is Alan McGee the boss of Creation Records there's a rumour that Alan missed his train back to London and he wasn't supposed to be in Glasgow that night really?
48yeah because he was Creation Records so the biggest record label for indie bands at the time they had primal screaming stuff and he walked into the gig just as they started and he was like holy fuck and then straight away was like I'm going to sign you he is from Glasgow isn't he yeah yeah he'd been visiting his nan or something yeah so he takes an old sign and he's like you've got it I'm going to sign you and I'm going to make you fucking huge and they're like perfect because this is about fucking time got yourself a fucking deal mate and he decides straight away that the way that Oasis are going to be made big is to turn them into the most reckless, wild rock and roll band in the world.
30He can just see these guys have the ingredients for it. And you'd have to say he got that one right. That was the visionary moment. And to make that happen, he introduces the band to this gentleman known as the Man Who Can. And the Man Who Can is basically a fixer. So this is how Tony McCarroll, the drummer, describes it in his book. He said the first ingredient he introduced to the mix was pure, undiluted cocaine. He would cater to our every need. Groupies, drinks, taxis, drugs. At aftershows, he would circle around us on a constant loop just to ensure we were sufficiently provided with an endless supply of vice and debauchery.
12Any subsequent fallout from all this drink and drugs consumption would be leaked immediately to the papers. So it's kind of cynical. Yeah, kind of using them a little bit. Well, I think they're very up for being used. True, true, true. Apparently, the man who can's literally like, when he basically wants them to shag some groupies, he's literally like, guys, what about her? Her? Her? And they're like, listen, man, I'm just trying to have a fucking bite. And he's like, I'll get her. I'll get her. Just like woodpeckering them. But it works. Yeah, it's interesting how this whole image was just sort of manufactured.
41I mean, I'm sure they were like that anyway, but that it was really like pushed as well. And they were really encouraged by the label. That was their brand. People love the fact that they were a riot. Yeah. You know, like it was like their fucking thing. But like was all music, I know the music industry was like borderline evil at this stage, but like, was it all that cynical? Like was Nirvana doing a similar thing with like wanting to, you know, stab yourself kind of vibe? The music industry in the UK at that time was pretty fucking boring. I read that it was like, I can't remember his name, like Brian, what's his name?
14What, Adams? Yeah, it was like, that was it. It was Canadian, but yeah. Brian Adams was like number one for like 14 weeks before Oasis released Columbia. It was pretty boring, and these guys have just come out and been like, fuck. Yeah, well, you had indie, which was sort of weird and insular and quite Smith's inspired, you know what I mean? Quite intelligent, but kind of awkward and odd. And then you had pop that was just a bit bland. So I guess he saw that opportunity to make it work. But it's interesting. It was a plan. Also, the other element that they really sell to people is the constant backbiting and fighting between Noel and Liam, which is real.
52I mean, like, we'll get on some good moments of that. But they are just, they're leaking all those stories to the press. They're selling that to the public as, like, a big part of the brand. Yeah. Which probably kind of, like, exacerbates it, doesn't it, further down the line because you're just constantly fucking in the papers with your brother telling you you hate each other. Yeah. I mean, probably in part two we'll cover the paranoia stage of all of that where it really gets to them. There was one story of them uh i think they were rehearsing for a gig or doing like the sound check or whatever and liam turned up late and apparently like noel was relatively calm up to that point like maybe a little bit annoyed but then as soon as um as soon as liam turned up he just like flew into this absolute rage like picked up a chair smashed it on the on the ground and there was all these like this pack of journalists in front watching them do their warm-up and apparently he then sort of just like check to make sure they'd seen it yeah yeah yeah they went off stage and just had like a quiet word with leo she's like can't be doing that leo i reckon the truth is that the basically they used to have a quiet sort of like passive aggressive annoyed with each other attitude mcgee was like can you just turn that into like violence yeah just dial it all up yeah so the ingredients are there obviously the the musical like style is just very simple anthemic songs so you're taking like the sing-along thing and combining it with like the indie cool and really that combined with the fighting and the drinking, the drugs, the recklessness is the perfect package for a 90s world that is about to be gripped by lad culture and celebrity gossip so like an obsession with what's going on in these things it's the perfect time it's 1993 so it's all about to happen, all that stuff and Sony, the record label obviously talked to Alan McGee and are like yeah this sounds great they decide to sign them and so 1993 oasis head down from manchester on the train to sign with sony and they get absolutely fucked like in the station they're just like you know enjoying the finest the man who can can secure their booze in they arrive absolutely hammered and apparently they walk into this record label they've never been inside one of these record label offices in london and all the staff you know i guess it's like a couple of hundred people maybe more waiting wow waiting you know like you've seen those scenes in films yeah yeah yeah and they're like on balconies all above all clapping fucking written in the stars yeah apparently they all just fall on the floor laughing because all your dreams are coming true and so they're like swigging champagne it's like kind of a party yeah but also they're taken into this room and there's a pile of documents and they're like this is your contract sign it and they're fucked they're like blind trunk fucked and so they all just sign it without even reading it fucking hell which I mean like it would have taken away from the rock and roll also that is just very oasis not to fucking even read it but do many people in that scenario back then true is it Joy Division that we should do an episode on them one day with if you've seen the film 24 hour party people and Tony Wilson they don't have a pen so that he cuts himself and they do it no way it's a really good film actually I think a lot of bands get fucked over by labels like there was a Netflix doc about is it Backstreet Boys or someone like that one of those boy bands who just got absolutely shafted by the label the manager got investigated by the FBI yeah yeah yeah I think a lot of the girl bands as well in the UK had the same didn't they yeah you kind of just you have to keep playing yeah yeah
24anyway so they signed this contract without even reading it and it's important to say that at this point Oasis hadn't even released any music they were literally just playing live shows four songs there was that demo tape that they would like hand out at gigs but there was nothing official no album, no singles but just because there was this whole hype machine around them and because the label and themselves had helped to cultivate this whole reputation for carnage they were already all over the papers, everyone knew that they were going to be the next big thing um it kind of just shows a little bit how the music industry has changed as well like how you know they really trailed the release of singles up to an album coming out it hypes everything up doesn't it yeah it's not like now you just log on to fucking spotify and you can have everything there must have been like such like mystique around yeah yeah yeah there really was so as the first singles for definitely maybe uh were coming out oasis were out on tour and living up to their reputation.
31So they become really infamous for trashing hotel rooms. Bonehead, the guitarist in particular, he'd just get absolutely fucked and just smash up furniture, throw light bulbs against the wall, lob lamps out the window. There's one time, it was quite a sort of schoolboy program. He fills a jacuzzi up with washing up liquid and it floods the lobby of the hotel with bubbles. so they're just wreaking havoc wherever they go and when they get booked to play a live show in Amsterdam imagine that the local hoteliers are quaking in their boots but fortunately for them Oasis don't even get that far so the day before the gig they get picked up in Manchester and they convince the guy that's driving their van that all of the petrol money that the label's given him they should just spend on vodka and drugs and they spend the morning just driving around manchester picking picking stuff up and by the time they get down to harwich to get the overnight ferry they're absolutely battered and get onto the boat and no goes straight to bed he wants to be fresh with the gig tomorrow but the rest of them are out on the deck necking champagne knocking back Jack Daniels and as you could probably imagine for a Thursday night overnight ferry to Amsterdam it's a pretty rowdy crowd on board sounds fucking fun yeah sounds great apparently there's a nightclub, a casino on board very rowdy Liam says the boat was filled up as well with all these West Ham fans who were on their way to a pre-season tour yeah I heard that and as you know basically everyone on board is is very drunk and at some point a big fight breaks out on board and it's it's just chaos on this boat liam is absolutely loving it he jumps up to join in and he's just running through this ferry just like wreaking havoc tipping over the roulette tables in the casino scrapping with people and at some point police appear and tony bicarra said it was like watching some kind of Benny Hill skit he's police chasing chasing Liam around the boat sprinting around the casino these coppers just on board I guess maybe it was like maybe they were security I don't know sounds like you need some presents yeah they probably knew what was going to happen it was probably every weekend this ferry was more or less the same eventually these coppers catch up with Liam and him and the rest of the band Bar Noel who's asleep in his in his room handcuffed and thrown in a cell in the bottom of the boat so Liam said there's in this in this like dank room and there's only a mattress and a bucket to piss in and when they land the following morning they're instantly arrested and deported back to the UK and Noel's the only one who's left there and he has to make this call to Alan McGee to let him know what's happened and apparently when he explains the story McGee just has one wide response, brilliant yeah oh fucking hell it's exactly what he wants yeah this is like exactly what I always find with these like Nutty Oasis stories Noel's the PG one yeah you know he's a sort of like responsible adult he's a bit older than them yeah true and he's a bit more sensitive and moody yeah I think they were supporting I think it was Primal Scream and it was their first gig outside the UK so like obviously to Noel this is huge this is like the biggest thing that they could possibly be doing and Liam's just like fuck it let's have it yeah yeah it's um so the story like ends up all over the press which for alan mcgee is like the best possible thing that could happen but no is is really pissed off because yeah i think it was the verve that was supposed to be um but yeah he it was their first international gig he saw this as like a big break for them and he's fuming at liam and the rest of them and there he's later recorded having a massive argument with liam about it during an interview with a journalist and this argument gets it's so like um poetic really this argument that the journalist ends up releasing it as a single which we've got a little clip of here thinking about getting thrown off ferries blah blah blah getting deported is something that i'm not proud about well i am that right well if you're proud about getting thrown off ferries then why don't you go and support West Ham get the fuck out of my band these lot think it's rock and roll to get thrown off a ferry to get shut up these lot think it's rock and roll to get thrown off a shuttle shut the fuck up man these lot think am I going to have to say this fat are you going to shut up it's like 11 minutes of that yeah yeah yeah so yeah the journalist releases a single called Wibbling Rivalry and it ends up it charts at number 52
37Pitchfork described it as one of the best Oasis records that's fucking unbelievable I love the idea of go to HMV or R-Price just to get get it on vinyl there's a famous Joe Wiley interview they did and it was in they've only just re-released it in the BBC archives and it's like 20 minutes and all it is is Noel and Liam just fucking go there it's not even an interview she introduces them and then they just go in it's great so good it is a dimension that most bands don't have they might have a rivalry but not like a sibling thing and again like I said this is before they've even released an album I think maybe they had a couple of singles up by this point but a recording of them having an argument is charting it's mental anyway back in the UK on home soil Oasis's reputation is starting to precede them wherever they go and they play this gig in Newcastle.

25Setup required compatibility and availability varies 18 plus. Liam's on his most abrasive form, winding up the crowd. A lot of it's about football, apparently. He's just giving them stick. And at some point, this bloke has had enough and runs onto the stage and punches Noel in the face. And Liam and the rest of their roadies set on this guy. Security are attacking him as well. and as they all pile onto him the crowd turns and starts rooting for the guy which kind of seems a bit out of it Also if he's on his own getting his head kicked in he must be like come on lads and chaos starts to break out in the crowd as well the gig gets cancelled but Liam is still at the front of the stage holding his microphone sound above his head people in the crowd are spitting at him and it looks it's starting to get pretty hairy and security decide they need to get Oasis out and they rush them out like a back exit and into their minibus but before they're able to get away the crowd like smashes through the fire exits and comes charging at the van surrounding it they're lobbing bricks at the back window battering it with iron bars the band are like cowering on the floor and just at the last second before people get in and beat the shit out of them.
50The driver manages to speed away. Mental. But they actually called it Liam Baten, didn't they? Like people would turn up to the gigs to try and like rile him up. Oh, really? Yeah. And there are lots of incidents in Newcastle. Like for some reason, there just seems to be like some sort of like, you know, rivalry between Liam and Newcastle. I was reading this story and I was like, this is mad. Like these people have presumably bought tickets to come and see them because they like them. and now they're trying to fucking beat the shit out of him. Maybe they went hating him. They were quite divisive.
23Yeah, true. Yeah, true. Like some people thought they were kind of ruining rock music. But then don't go to their gig. Unless you just want to go Liam baiting. Yeah. Poke the fucking bear. It's not hard to bait Liam baiting. True. And quite fun to poke the bear as well. Yeah, I mean, fuck it, let's see what he does. It's like medieval badger baiting. Yeah. Yeah. really yeah um anyway a lot of their gigs are just pretty chaotic really but during this tour um they have a couple of days off and liam and toady at this point are living at their mate biggins in manchester and they get back there and discover somehow that he's befriended alex hurricane higgins the so random record snooker player friend of the pod yeah friend of the pod and Higgins is staying at their place he's taken Tony's bed so Tony writes in his book he said suddenly the hurricane appeared at the door to the kitchen looking extremely unkempt it seemed he had slept in his clothes and already there was a cigarette hanging out the side of his mouth his eyes were glassy and the cigarette moved up and down as he mumbled that he was hungry that's basically Hurricane Higgins all the time great and unsurprisingly surprisingly considering their lifestyle choices him and Liam get on famously and they head out for a big sesh at the local pub where Hurricane is hustling people at pool and he's just like knocking back the whiskey he's getting more and more drunk and betting big sums like sums he doesn't have against local gangsters in this pub and it starts to get a bit heated he almost gets in a fight after calling this woman fat and they end up deciding to make themselves scarce from this pub before it all kicks off and carry on have their big night out and go back to the house at some point and then in the middle of the night liam and tony get woken up by biggan yelling he's standing there at the end of the bed in his pants screaming fire and they wake up and the house is filled with smoke and they have to just like go down down the staircase almost blind from the smoke and get downstairs and they discover the oven is on fire and they managed to just crawl across the kitchen floor somehow put out the fire in this oven open open up the doors and the smoke begins to clear and they find hurricane fast asleep on the sofa in the kitchen just i just just completely slept just completely slept through it but yeah as the smoke starts to clear they realise the cause of this fire was a fray bentos pie that he'd been heating up in a frying pan on the stove and had then fallen asleep
20that is fucking great and when he eventually comes to they wake him up with like cold water screaming in his face and he realises what's happened. Apparently the only thing he can think about is eating his blackened pie. I mean, you cooked it. Where's the pie? Where's my pie?
40That's fucking excellent. Yeah. It's just the crossover you never knew you needed. Yeah.
49Being big stars does come with some benefits though and the band start getting a lot of attention from the ladies um tony mccarroll the drummer even gets an impersonator who meets him before a gig one time admits that he's been pretending to be him to shag girls it's definitely liam though who's getting by far the most attention uh there's a story of them them going over to new york to play a showcase gig for sony and afterwards they're hanging out with this english model that they've met and Liam's really taking a shine to her and she invites him and the rest of the band back to her place for an after party and her and Liam at some point go off to the bedroom end up shagging and half an hour later he comes out of the room looking a little bit sheepish a little bit weird and he tells them that she'd after they'd shagged she'd taken the condom and got out a roll of stickers written his name on it and labeled the condom and there you know this party's a little bit bit of a weird vibe there and then later in the night this girl shows them a fridge in the corner of the living room filled up with labeled condoms that's fucking mental it's very artistic as well yeah there's one from kirk kabane and uh at least it was labeled kirk kabane my collection yeah yeah it wasn't a Kurt Cobain impersonator yeah yeah that is she's not doing that to like get pregnant is she she's just I just collecting that was my first I don't know I don't know how long it lasted in the fridge because you know how Simon Cowell when Harry Styles got big he was like the only piece of advice I'm going to give you is take the condom with you afterwards oh yeah and Drake used to put hot sauce in it afterwards didn't he really to kill the sperm I think quite weird to carry around a little pot of hot sports yeah yeah it does slightly kill not as weird as having a fridge full of filled condoms that does slightly kill the vibe afterwards sorry do you mind if I just get out a bottle of Tabasco yeah I just don't trust you when I lived in New York I knew a girl who collected her period in a jar in the fridge oh what the fuck why don't know actually I never got to the bottom of why but she showed me the job I don't think you ever could get to the bottom of wire for that sort of shit I don't think it's like for consumption I think it's just like it's art maybe she was painting with it or something like that give her the benefit of the doubt I can imagine this girl having like sort of a Damien Hirst style art thing going on yeah it's quite expressionist I don't like it doesn't work as well with Kurt Cobain's old jizz yeah anyway so all this time Oasis are working on recording their first album, definitely, maybe.
44And it is not a smooth process. So the first attempt is a complete disaster. They only get one track done in two weeks. They're sent to Wales, I think it's Mono Valley, where there's this quite well-known recording studio. It's quite remote, but nothing's really working. The sound engineers and people they pick to work on it aren't getting the sound right. It doesn't sound like Oasis. and to make matters worse Liam fears that his room is haunted so apparently after their first night the owner came down and was like which one of you is in room number 3 Liam's like I am and they're like oh you've got the ghost it's a haunted one Liam's like oh fuck this I'm out of it before TripAdvisor hotels could do what the fuck they wanted apparently Liam's terrified by this he doesn't sleep he's just freaking out and so the band decided to start fucking with him and Tony McCarroll, the drummer, says in his book that he got hold of some fishing line which obviously is like, it's see-through so it's invisible and he tied this fishing line through loads of the shoes in the sitting room, through newspapers so that that evening they're all sitting there just watching the football on TV and Tony suddenly just gave it a pull and everything in the room just starts raising up in the air, moving and apparently Liam freaks out, just gets up, runs out the door through some fields, just terrified.
04He's like, fuck this. He said he was absolutely shitting himself. So that's basically all they managed to achieve artistically in Mono Valley. And it takes a long time to get the album right. Several different recording sessions. Eventually, it is finally released in August 1994. And it is an instant classic. So the critics love it. This is what NME say at the time. definitely maybe it's like opening your bedroom curtains one morning and discovering that some fuckers built the Taj Mahal in your back garden and then filled it with your favourite flavour of angel delight that is fucking such a good quote so good do you know what also that is so capturing the spirit of the mid 90s of like that like excitement and positivity you know Tracy Emin called it the brightness of things happening just this feeling that like loads of fucking exciting good shit feels like right now goosebumps Roast bumps.
00Only if Zach can get his ticket, though. Yeah, that'll be... Do get in touch with the ticket. So the critics love it, and so do the fans. It debuts at number one. It's the fastest-selling debut album in British history at the time. Fucking mental. Wow. So I think Arctic Monkeys later beat that, don't they? Did they? I think it's about how many you shift in the first week. So it definitely maybe does 100 ,000. Yeah. It goes platinum in like a month, I think. Really? Yeah. Yeah. Which is, what, a million? Yeah. Yeah, it's mental. I think Arctic Monkeys do beat that in like 2008. Oh yeah, you're right.
33Yeah, the fastest saying British album is now that, 363 ,000, so they smashed it. Wow, good albums. So it's huge. Fans love it, critics love it. You've got a funny story. I have got a good one and it is probably the most mental fan story I've ever heard. So after this blows up, these two lads from Kent hear a story in their local village that someone's delivered a parcel to Liam Gallagher's new house in London. So these two lads in Kent, they're 15 years old, they decide to get the bus to London one Saturday morning and go and try and find Liam Gallagher's house. So they're 15 years old, they get on the bus, they get to London and they're going down the street where apparently he lives and they see like two Vespers outside this new sort of like block and they're like, might as well give it a go, I think it could be Liam Gallagher's house.

22So open the gate, the gate's open, go up to the top, got to the top of the stairs knock on the door nothing happens and a couple of minutes later the door opens it's Liam Gallagher half cut half naked and he's like what the fuck are you two doing here get the fuck off my land and they're like Liam look we love you we've traveled all this way I'm really really sorry like we don't upset he's like get the fuck off my property so they go outside and they're like on on the road like head head in hands like we've really upset him and then two seconds later Liam comes out he's got a top one he's like fuck it lads come on have a brew these two lads get off the street walk back up and they're ending up in there in liam gallagher's kitchen right and uh he's there for like half an hour they're like talking sharing stories he's signing stuff for him anyway he's like right i need to go now and this one of the 15 year olds is like proper cocky so they're walking out and he sees a plaque and uh he's like liam what's that and he's like that's the platinum disc from uh what's the story in my own in gloria he's like can i have it and he goes apparently just sits there and pauses for a second he goes if you don't ask you don't get and he fucking gives him the plaque right so it's little 15 year olds in liam gallagher's house with a plaque and the other kids just like well what about me can i have something and he's like uh yeah yeah and he gives him a stapler
43so these two kids just walk down the road one of them's got one of oh sorry i forgot to mention this the platinum disc is one of only four that the band have right so he's got they each get one uh so they walk down this they walk down the road one of them has the original copy so the original platinum disc for what's the story morning glory and the other's got is stapler
05that's great true story and the guys never sold it apparently Liam got in touch with him afterwards and was like look I've done you a sound there like I don't mind you having it like I've absolutely like no problem with you turning up to my house but please never sell it and the geezers never sold it still got it it's fucking amazing story has the other fella still got the stapler yeah yeah he gets it out at like house parties and that he says no one else can use it apart from him almost cooler to have the stapler yeah it's those stories about Liam Gallagher they capture so much of like him yeah yeah his personality I just love that one that's so good that is the best proof of Don't Ask Don't Get yeah yeah yeah can you imagine just asking and him just sitting there silent just looking at and he's like you don't ask you don't get yeah there's very few people that would have worked with as well yeah yeah so good that is fucking great while that album's going platinum very quickly the band heads straight off on a tour of Japan so I think it's two weeks after the release date they're on a flight to Tokyo and when they get there at the airport they cannot believe the scenes they are absolutely mobbed it's like Beatlemania vibes just like thousands of mostly young women throwing mostly underwear at them a few other gifts as well just screaming and it's like that everywhere they go in Japan and they're like this is an unbelievable high like being a band who's on the way up just had their big release like they're on top of the fucking world playing together really well live.
31There's one big argument right at the end between, I think, McCarroll and Bonehead, but otherwise, they're all getting on famously. So the Japan tour goes very well, and then they head to the US, they can do a US tour, and they land in Chicago, and having had that high, they're expecting similar. They think they're getting what the Beatles got when they arrived in America, and so they step off the plane, they get into Chicago, O 'Hare Airport, come out, and there's not one single fan there. mental just a bunch of like business commuters I do think like the Americans just probably don't get it do they well they didn't get it at that time not on that stage no one knows who the fuck they are I mean like it's it's hard to crack America and they haven't yet that feeling coming through because I feel like even you know when you come through the airport anyway and you come out and there's just like people's families you still feel quite like self-conscious walking out and you were just like you know you've got no one waiting for you but if you are like strutting through expecting to have like 2 ,000 goals like screaming and throwing stuff at you.
31And then you just come out and there's just someone with like a sign, a taxi driver with a sign for a Saudi businessman. I still reckon Liam would have started. Yeah, same walk. Always the same walk. And sadly, that becomes a bit of a sign of things to come in America because the tour does not go well. So it gets off to a very worrying start on day one when they decide to go and score some drugs. new city don't know anyone there they're like having to chat to random people no one's really like giving them much eventually they get a link and they they don't have the man who can with them so they've just they've just got to meet dealers themselves and so Noel wants to score some gear he's like fuck it I'll go meet the dealer three of them go get a taxi there Noel gets out the cab and meets this dealer who says give me the cash first and then I'll tell you where the drugs are which no small boy error I suppose Liam hasn't had to do much uh like picking up of his own drugs this is no is it yeah but still there you know you're in a new city rick lulu's apparently he's a huge bloke very intimidating and um the guy's like right in that bus shelter over there go and pick up there's a bag under the seat that's that's your gear so no one goes in grabs the bag sits down in the taxi tastes it and he's like that's flour fuck's sake so apparently what he actually says is i think that's flour self-raising flour and Tony McHale just goes, who gives a fuck what type of flower it is?
01So yeah,
05they've been ad. And so they're pissed off. They're struggling to get the right drugs. It's annoying. But soon they've got the exact opposite problem. Because pretty soon they find that when they do score real drugs in America, they're way too strong for them. So they head to LA. And this is the big marquee gig of the US tour. kicking it off they're at Whiskey A Go Go most famous club in LA I think it's where Elton John did he I might have that wrong but I think in the movie of Elton John you see him there do Crocodile Rock all the stars have played it that is a shit name for a club Whiskey A Go Go kind of American and cheesy in the right way it's very California yeah it sounds like a beach bar yeah well anyway it's the most famous club in LA so have a bit of fucking respect and it is a huge gig for them they know it's this iconic spot they know all the other big bands have played there they're told that Ringo Starr is going to be in the audience so they're like right want to impress him you know Noel's the Beatles are gods to Noel Gallagher and so he's like guys I want this taken fucking seriously but there is just one tiny problem which is that they've already been up for 24 hours on crystal meth it'll do it to you and they are totally spangled it'll do it to you so apparently they basically The day before they score this meth and they've never done it before.
26They don't really know what it is. And they're just doing like big lines. Apparently you're meant to do quite small quantities of it, which I can believe. But they're just doing like big lines like they would do with their like Manchester gear. And they're like totally fucked. And then, so the night before, I think it's, Noel isn't doing it. He's the only one he's not. So they're like, how are you going to, they try and level themselves out by doing E. They're like, that'll balance it out and cut through it. Doesn't work. And so they arrive for this gig totally spangled and it is an absolute train wreck.
00So, because even the roadies and the managers and stuff are on meth, they fuck up their jobs and they give all the band members different set lists. So each member of the band is playing a different song at the same time. I mean, I watch footage of it and I actually think they play quite well. I mean, Liam's vocals kind of rescue it. Yeah. But there are bits that are just like a chaotic mess they do say Liam sounds better when he's fucked yeah they did rock and roll star for that album apparently he'd not been to bed turned up at like 3pm absolutely cunted and he nailed it first time yeah you can almost hear it in the voice yeah that kind of like croaky fucked in this gig and in a lot of recordings from the time his eyelids are basically shut really there's so little like actual eye showing his eyelids are so heavy and uh yeah it's a fucking shit show so Ringo Starr walks out apparently they see him walk out which is pretty dispiriting and um there's no there's no relatively sober then yeah no I think he's been like doing coke and stuff but he yeah he's not on the same level but he's in a just a fucking shit mood a lot of people if you watch the YouTube comments under the the meth gig video on YouTube a lot of people are like it was Noel who was fucking up really yeah yeah um anyway Liam is like off his nut um Tony McHarrill says in his book, Liam was literally taking handfuls of crystal meth that he'd hidden behind my drums and troughing it down on stage.
27And then apparently just giving Tony a wink and turning back to the crowd who could just see the whole thing happening. Liam's so fucked he just chucks his tambourine at Noel. It hits him in the face. Fucking hell. At which point Noel and Liam are like screaming at each other. And after the gig ends, when they're all just like, what the fuck was that? Half of them are just spangled. Noel's marches strapped to Liam and he's like, you, a fucking word now. Drags him into a cupboard to backstage and they start screaming at each other the worst row anyone's seen them have i think like you know some of the sort of synthetic rows they've had on stage people kind of tell but this one everyone's like boiled over fuck this is not good and noel then goes straight to their manager maggie and he's like i want all the travel money because she's holding all the band's cash for the tour he's like give me all the cash the band's got and she's like no but it's that weird thing you kind of work for them so she gives him most of it which is 700 and he's like give me my passport and she's like oh fuck gives him his passport she's like he'll calm down he'll be fine tomorrow he just needs to go to bed but maggie wakes up and she's got a note that's been slipped under her door and all it says is i'm leaving fuck liam gets a note as well dropping the bombshell that noel's fucking off and you know they've just lost the band leader in the middle of their u.s tour like has he quit the band entirely what's going on where's he gone it's america it could be anywhere you think liam would be like devastated or at least a bit worried but he's got other priorities here is how in the documentary supersonic liam describes the moment that he found out noel had quit i don't know what i was thinking maybe i thought it was the end i really don't know he takes the money and runs i remember some fucking sopping out coming through the door saying like how can we go on like brothers it was like fuck right off so that got rolled up and then another line of crystal meth went up the old fucking tubular bells.
23Tubular bells! So that got rolled up. I love the idea you've written this really heartfelt note. You're like, how can I get through to it? This will work. And he's just rolled it up and snorted meth with it. Fucking unbelievable. The old tubular bells. Unbelievable. Yeah. Noel denies that he wrote a soppy note. He says it was simpler, but we'll never know. So meanwhile, Noel's got all the band's cash. He grabs a huge sack of Coke and jumps in a taxi to San Francisco. And no one knows where he's gone. Oasis have just lost Noel Gallagher in the middle of a disastrous US tour. The Gallagher brothers are wrecked on drugs.
05They're openly at war. And their bid to become the biggest rock and roll band in the world by cracking America is in tatters. Will it survive?
