In short

The Upshot episode “Thomas Tuchel’s MILF summer” is a comedic World Cup recap and fan-culture roundup, focused on England’s dramatic Mexico win and the fallout.

Guests

none named; it’s hosted by Jack, Zach, and JP Lockwood (with additional hotline callers and producer Yasmin mentioned). Key claims and notable examples: JP Lockwood is mocked for allegedly missing live England coverage and for being “proper Chels” rather than English; Jordan Henderson gets a yellow card and breaks his arm in Mexico and is left behind in hospital; Mexico fans celebrate with toxic foam, car-tipping, and throwing people in the air; David Bentley is threatened by fans making throat-slitting gestures. Another segment covers viral Mumsnet posts finding Thomas Tuchel “strangely attractive,” with commenters making explicit “MILF” style jokes. The episode also discusses USA’s Balogun red-card ban suspension after Trump’s intervention, and teases a future episode on Gianni Infantino’s alleged corruption.

1:40The podcast about the funniest stories in sport this week. On the show today, Thomas Tuchel's MILF summer. The Norwegian stars who had an orgy on the pitch. And we hear from England fans caught in car tipping chaos in Mexico. And we are, of course, sponsored by Injury Lawyers for you. My name is Jack Hello Zach Hi Jack Hello JP Buongiorno fellas I was hoping for some Norwegian there No thanks Not even Spanish Not this week Our friends How are we all doing? Great Yeah, yeah, good Just about recovery Is it the morning after, the night before? Something like that Yeah Completely lost track of time Catching up on Me and you are catching up on sleep I think Jack, aren't we?

2:21We are, yeah There's going to be a bit of an inquest today because a scandal has taken place in the living room of one of Britain's biggest football podcasters. You know, with his history of hooliganism and his collection of vintage shirts, JP Lockwood, he's always seen himself as the most England till I die of the Upshot podcast. A man who's in touch with the ordinary fan on the terrace. And so at 2 a.m. local time on Monday morning, as Tommy Tuchel sent his boys into the bear pit of the Azteca for the most epic theatrical knockout tie of our lifetimes. Where do you think JP was? I'll tell you where he was.

3:06Tucked up in bed, listening to Lily Allen. This isn't going to be an easy week for me, is it? It is an outrage, really, JP, isn't it? Do you have any defence? What have you got to say for yourself? What have you got to say? You were in a gastropub in Q. yours looks slightly yeah it's not gastro mate it's not gastro and it was Brentford you had croquettes I did not I had a pizza and yours looked slightly rougher I was in yeah I was in a pub in Deptford yeah fair enough I was in Brentford by the stadium and this week is not a good one for me it's completely damaging the rep remind us why you couldn't watch the England game live because what have you got on this week I did watch it live yeah after you watched it did you watch it where did you watch it?

3:52I watched it live in my living room at 6am yeah at 6 alive watched it in full but at 6am in full in full at 6am in full at 6am alright hands up that is a disgrace you did commit to the 10 sellers I did at that time though which is impressive but I've got a really busy week I've got Lily Allen tonight at the O2 and then what have you got on Thursday? Sugar Babes at Endy Festival

4:19don't talk to me about Saturday I'll have crocats there to be fair and Saturday my missus has booked us tickets to Lewis Capaldi which crashes into the quarterfinals but that was the straw that was the last straw for me yeah you can't can't let Lewis down Lewis has got to fucking go Lewis takes precedent over oh god it's just an awful week wait you've sold the Lewis Capaldi tickets yeah you've kept Lily kept Sugarbilly kept Sugarbilly and you missed England so you could stay fresh for and I've let my country down for Lily Allen yeah so one basically rumour spread on Friday morning. I got wind of the fact that, or maybe it's Saturday night, yeah, because I was hammered.

4:57Got wind of the fact that JP was planning to not watch the game live and get up at six and watch, were you going to watch 12-minute highlights? It does spread like wildfire. Your dad watches the 12-minute England highlights because he's got Lily Allen on Tuesday. And yeah, safe to say, Zach and I have been giving JP shit all weekend. Did you then crumble? and what time did you watch the game? Six o 'clock. So you did, because you told us about an hour ago that you watched it in the night. I know, but I just thought I'd let myself. Are you just lying? You're just lying. I just feel like sometimes it's better just to get it.

5:32This feels like Jeremy Kyle today. How do we even know? Line attacks us on. How do we even know that you're telling the truth about this? I reckon you watched the 12 minute highlights in the year. Yeah, I've let my country down. I just don't get it. You fucking love football, love England. Like you love the World Cup. I love Lillian. What, you don't want to watch England? You don't want to watch England live? Have you listened to that new album? West End Girl. Yeah. Yeah. I reckon 70 or 80 % of the population did what I did. Yeah, but they're not fucking massive football fans. Yeah. You're making a career out of talking about football, JP.

6:10No. I have heard rumours that you describe yourself as Chels, not English. Is it true? Yeah, yeah, yeah. I'm proper Chels. because you know like did you see videos of schools that stuck on in the morning for like kids kids who didn't stay up that's what my living room was like yeah so I saw there was like a little clip on BBC News and they were going around like talking to some of the kids and they came to one of them who's there in his England shirt and he was like I had to stay up for it it's like so I can't I don't go to bed for this badge you can't be 10 years old that kid my country needs me shout out Pete who works in our building who took his 10 year old daughter to the pub and she watched it live fuck she loves Lily Allen fuck actually she probably doesn't I just think in the words of Lily it's not fair and it's really not okay yeah that plus the week that I'm having now I think my rep is completely in tatters I've got some work to do any festival you know it happens every year mate and that game against Mexico was a once in a lifetime game in terms of the the theatre just the whole nature of it the kickoff pushback by an hour yeah yeah yeah it was the altitude yeah it was absolutely epic fortunately some of us did put our country yeah ahead of ahead of staying fresh for Henny Regatta yeah it was a belter of a game wasn't it just backs backs against the wall incessant tension the sort of thing that however hard they try it simply cannot be captured in a 12 minute YouTube highlight compilation it's gonna be a tough one heroes all across the pitch Jude Bellium Anthony Gordon Kane Dan Byrne Big Dan Byrne Mucha Buena from Sugar Babes exactly yeah but despite all of that the show was still somehow stolen by Mr.

8:02Jordan Henderson who despite not getting on the pitch still managed to get himself a yellow card and break his arm it's the most mid-30s injury ever it's really first time I've ever been able to relate to an athlete JP Jordan Henderson's the England midfielder plays for Bremford not Q

8:27it looks horrible there is a slow motion close up that I won't subject you to because you can see what was he booked for? argue with the ref he was giving it to the ref on the sidelines so is he out now well no he's still he's still in hospital in Mexico yeah they left him behind they had to leave him behind fucking hell they went back to Kansas City to the training base and he's been left behind in Mexico City so shit still coping with the altitude it's quite funny that he's managed to get the one injury which will make doing card tricks actually quite hard yeah the wrist yeah oh that's I feel so bad for him I think he's out of the World Cup yeah I think he's out of the tournament yeah do you think he'll stay and do the card tricks anyway surely I mean yeah can you do one-handed card tricks yeah but actually Henderson's wrist hanging off his arm wasn't the only traumatic sight waiting for England's players at full time because Katie Price had promised to get naked for them if they beat Mexico did she?

9:32any good? no word actually roll clip yeah I don't actually know if she fulfilled what she made good promise yeah is this another Lee Andrews yeah what's the angle here she's just saying things on the internet again yeah could be that right yeah wasn't the only injury as well Harry Kane's vocal chords took a battering after singing Wonderwall it's unlike he'd smoked a 40 pack of Lambent and Butler Harry Kane yeah I've just been singing there I can't really talk but yeah all the occasion the team everything against us we found a way I was going to say is that what pleases you the most the resilience today because even your penalty a word on that as well not the one you scored the one you conceded what did you make of that?

10:19yeah I thought I got to the ball first it was one of those days day four of Glastonbury when you get home and you're speaking to your mum yeah the vapes got the podcast on Tuesday what am I going to do is that just from shouting during the game and then a bit of like singing after I think it's seeing yeah that's Wonderwall seeing a Wonderwall Wonderwall will do that to you Vapes will do that to me. Sounds like JP after a Lily Allen concert. Sun in the sky, a while. What's your favourite Lily Allen song? Smile. But she's not going to do that tonight. She's only doing the new album in full. Her dad wrote Vindaloo.

10:56Yeah, I was told before, which I didn't realise. Maybe, will she do that? No. Will she do Vindaloo tonight? That would be great. I'd absolutely hate that. It'd ruin the moment. what's the song I've never heard this what is this everyone else singing along JP's just looking confused terrible I'm gonna leave another enjoyable moment you see when Mexico's manager Javier Aguirre I think they pronounce it called over Anthony Gordon just to tell him to fuck off

11:31they're just absolute shithouses the Mexicans aren't they really like them yeah it made the win a lot more yeah I mean there was a lot of talk before about how the Azteca was going to be this really hostile bear pit terrifying Mexican fans but apparently from people we've spoken to who are there it was actually pretty good natured yeah the crowd the crowd were kind of hostile in the stadium but my mate a few of my mates were there and they sent sent an update and they said the post match it was like the Mexican fans had won the World Cup like they just party indeed really in the streets yeah so they've got this this foam they spray on everyone and i've got video of it and apparently it's just fucking everywhere but it turns out it's actually quite toxic and uh they apparently in in a playful not an aggie way they like spray it in your mouth and eyes and um are we talking like foam party kind of yeah yeah we've got a video of it and uh anyway um our mate lloydy your landlord yeah he had to go to hospital the next day because he couldn't see because the foam was in his eyes.

12:36Fantastic news. He won't be getting any rent this month. Here they are. They're tipping a car. We've got a video of them tipping a car over as well. That's the foam. Wow. It's like, yeah, spray. It's kind of silly string-like. Really? And then the other thing they love doing apparently is throwing people in the air. So they love, apparently they love someone who's really light, but they also love someone really heavy for a challenge. But there is a clip of them. Look, there they are. Is that him with it? Is that him with it in his eyes? Yeah, yeah, yeah. It's literally all over his face. Is that just before he had to go?

13:04Is that just before he had to go to hospital? Yeah, they just threw this girl up in the air and she's landing in their arms as the video ends. It looks like her head and neck are about to hit the deck. Ooh, wild. He looks absolutely mash-up. Well done, mate. Yeah, it looks class, to be fair. Apparently they're great. Apparently they're constantly bezo, bezo, bezo, demanding kisses. Like the World War II Liberation of France vibe. This is a quote from his message. The women, young slash old slash husbands watching, were desperate to get a kiss from an Englishman. Bit of a brag. And yeah, flipping cards.

13:35And then they have one of those electrocution games. You know the ones, have you ever done them? Well, where you press down. You hold it and you don't know if it's going to shock you. And apparently they just keep making you do it. Quite kind of childish celebration. Yeah, apparently it was like really good natured, sort of like childlike, innocent fun. That's great. Yeah. You can't imagine it being that good natured if England got knocked out at home. I think the 3 ,000 England fans who were there would probably have got stuck in anywhere. Oh, at home. Yeah, yeah. Oh, yeah. Would have got quite nasty.

14:01Nasty chance about Frida Kahlo and El Chapo. But yeah, I mean, it seemed majority pretty good vibes. I saw videos of Mexican fans just like clapping England fans out and like shaking their hands when they were leaving. The good vibes, however, were not received by the former England and Spurs man David Bentley, who posted a video of himself in the stands while some quite scary looking Mexican fans were doing the throat slitting gesture at him. he's had a very busy world cup yeah he's everywhere yeah he's been on the piss every day yeah world cup by the looks of the thing he's earned his stripes we'll link to the video is he saying come down here and I'll kill you yeah why is he a lone England he's doing the wanker side he's doing wanker side he's doing the wanker side oh look there's loads of them that's proper dad on tour with the old yeah I mean they're close enough to him that they could come up and fight if they wanted to yeah the guy's wife looking quite embarrassed though.

15:00All fart, no shit. But yeah, he's been, he's been, um, on a bit of a mad one. Yeah, he's had a good time. Who's he working for? I have no idea. I did actually, he does stuff with Under the Cosh, doesn't he? Does he? Because I think, yeah, when I was chatting to them, they were like, you should get him on. I think we should. I mean, he's funny as hell. Yeah. I saw a quite good video he posted of himself gyrating with a sort of traditional Mexican band. Like a mariachi band.

15:38I just think he's fucking funny. What I love about you, keep seeing these videos where he meets people and they just think he's this drunken England fan, like not knowing that he literally played for England. He's got caps. You really can't tell. He's been in the thick of it. Yeah. Yeah. You can see why he might incite a few throat slits though. Yeah. Yeah. Moving on from Mexican throat slitters, it feels a lot like Tommy Tuchel is, you know, sort of properly growing in popularity now, doesn't it? The England faithful are slowly starting to love the guy. Obviously for diehard England fans like myself, I called it before the tournament.

16:17He knows what he's doing. He's built for tournament football. He's cool as a cucumber, our Tommy. But I'm not sure he's going to be remaining cool as a cucumber when he finds out who is lusting after him. And that, my friends, is the middle-aged women of Mumsnet. So a post has gone viral this week, which was posted in early July. And it says, to find Tommy Tuchel strangely attractive. That's after the Congo win, I think. After the Congo win. And it sounds like some of the mums are sort of getting their teeth in. the post has gone viral and I've pulled out some of what does the original post say?

17:01it says to find Thomas Tuchel strangely attractive oh yeah because it's on the am I being unreasonable board so you go am I being unreasonable to find Thomas Tuchel strangely attractive anyone agree he has a lovely smile when being interviewed after today's match I pulled some favourites and as you can imagine the comments are quite mumsy one person said he looks like a thin German Greg Davis he does he looks like Greg Davis has been on a Zen pic

17:35another one from Northern Dancer when he was at Chelsea I always said he looked as if as if he should be smoking weed in a bus shelter nobody disagreed I kind of get that yeah he does look quite haggard yeah he's a bit he's a bit of a stoner the bottom comment done me in as well it says Jude Bellingham on the other hand is a magnificent specimen have him washed and brought to my tent immediately on second thoughts don't wash him uh this one i can just imagine it's like a mum from essex who has got about three kids and she really hates her husband and she's like he could play with my formation any day of the week even at 2am on a monday that's pretty good yeah it's quite hard to find a manager innuendo like that I wouldn't know what 2am on a Monday looks like.

18:25That's when England were playing, by the way. Thomas Tuchel's the manager. And this last one, which is a proper mum's comment, was Jesus Christ, I read the title without my glasses on and I thought you said Thomas the Tank Engine. You'd get one too while we're at it. I was thinking we were talking about hot cartoon characters the other day on the live stream, but Thomas the Tank Engine didn't. No one mentioned Thomas the Tank Engine. not even the fat controller yeah not the fat controller not that sexy are they Sir Topham Hatt as he's now known yeah you told me that it's gone woke it has gone rude it's not the fat controller it's so weird because I've got the books that I read with my son and they're like proper bastards to each other the trains they're absolute cunts they're always calling each other like fat and stuff like that lazy and now the TV program it's gone PG oh let's help some animals James gone being kind you should say to your son you can't watch the new one you can only watch the old one.

19:22Ringo Starr. Also watch all those racist old Disney. That's true. He loves those. He loves those anyway. While he's holding his questionable toy. You know the one. Thomas Tugel, do you see it? I mean, obviously, he, you know, he's fruity. He's got something about him. I'm not sure whether it is just the England manager thing, but I just find him not really attractive but he's got something about he's got he's got charisma he's got like confidence yeah it's just because England are winning this is I mean these are the good times guys we've reached the stage of the tournament where England have won a knockout against like a relatively decent team in a fun way so suddenly everyone's just so positive about everything yeah and now suddenly they're looking at suddenly mum's neck's gone into meltdown suddenly Anthony Barry's arse is looking pretty tight during the during the halftime interview by the way I fucking love Anthony Barry's half-time interviews.

20:20They're so good. He's great. Really gives you a sense that England are like in control of the situation. I'm not a big fan of half-time interviews in general. If it's not the managers, I think it's fine. I think it's adding something. Yeah. And it helps that I want to fuck him. Which again, could be getting swept up in the England fever. Yeah. Thomas Ducal, young Thomas Ducal is quite a looker. Yeah. He's got that kind of like German techno vibe. Yeah. He's, yeah. Unlike Gareth Southgate, who, His glow up came very late. Yeah. Oh yeah. Who, there was a picture of Thomas Tuchel Young we were looking at the other day.

20:53Yeah. There's one from him like at university or something. Search for that. Oh, here's young. Oh, he's modeling for real cream. Something like that. Oh, we're looking at a picture of him young with a razor. It's like electric razor. he's really good looking. That looks like it's out of like an American high school yearbook in the 70s. And that's like Chad von Pappenheim. The quarterback. He made varsity. spring break baby you me caught a final yes fuck that's the other thing my mate um sent me a video he walked into a bar i don't know if this was in mexico city or in america he's he's out there and uh and the the cringe chant was just being done in the wild

21:39oh i believe that we my god like they actually people are chanting it in the wild is it Has it now become like an ironic thing? I don't think Americans know irony like that. I genuinely think that they're like, this is a belter. Do you think the milfs of Mumsnet are aware of Thomas Tuchel's sort of passions? I think this could send them into overdrive. Do you think they'll like that? Yeah. Yeah. I think it's quite Fifty Shades of Grey. Oh, good point. They'll just love like, oh yeah. He's like really with it and also an absolute dirty dog. They literally call that mum porn, don't they? 50 shows of gross.

22:18You ever read it? No. Have you read it? Big time. That was what, you were up till 2am. Had the England match on, but actually I was reading that underneath the covers.

22:32You've got a copy of 442 magazine, but inside it's just... My rep is in fucking tatters. Mug of red bush tea on the side. scented candle lit

22:49I also read this week that apparently his favourite pub is the Devonshire in Soho a bit trendy yeah a bit like West London rich guy trendy though isn't it which to be fair is his vibe yeah but I thought maybe given his track record he might be in something a bit more dingy yeah yeah but he loves what was that place that you go to the place he oh Kensington Roof Gardens Kensington Roof Gardens yeah and has he also got the kink of like wanting to spend loads of money like the pay pick thing getting ripped off yeah he wants to pay 120 quid for a fucking steak he's like what 10 quid for a guinness oh tell me how oh

25:06Prize Picks, America's number one sports picks app. The details make it though. We had a great hotline message this week from Mickey who said, my mate got married yesterday in Marlebone having photos outside the registry office and guess who walks by? None other than upshot royalty, Mr. Wayne Lineker. Naughty uncle Wayne. That's great. Apparently he stopped by, had some photos, and I think he put it on his Instagram as well. So he then posted on his own story this. Just had the funniest moment. I'm walking down Maribyrne High Street, High Road, wherever it is, outside the registry office where Tia got married last year.

25:53There's a big wedding going on. The name of the guy is Tom. Tom the Grimsman. They also saw me walk by. They're all outside, about 60 of them. and they're all going, come on, Wayne, give us a pic. So I've jumped in and had a picture. Tom, if you're out there, or anyone knows Tom who's just got married, can you please DM me, mate, so I can get them pictures. Iconic. Get it on me grid. Get it on me grid, I'm a man of the people. I love that he wants the pic. And he did, to be fair, got it on the grid. To be fair, it would be quite a fun person to crash your wedding photo. I don't think there's a better person to walk by.

26:32You know like when you're showing the grandkids in 50 years, quite hard to explain. So there was a footballer called Gary Lineker and he had a brother. And he's a footballer as well. He runs a beach bar and a beaver. Got Nick for smuggling fake pesetas. He's a legend. I think that is a fun person to pop up. Yeah, that's the right sort of just like funny celeb. He's not going to like steal the show, but also just like a good character. and definitely going to get stuck in. Yeah, you don't want him at the reception probably because then, you know. It's a bit much. He might get a bit too stuck in.

27:09Yeah. It does always, it's a bit random, it always reminds me of that like show where they, Gordon Ramsay went with like police and I swear it was in like Mexico, maybe it was America, busting like dealers at night. He like goes on the raids with them and there's this one where they bust this guy in the middle of the night. He's like bleary eyed, let out, like he's been pinned on the floor, let out in handcuffs going into the police car. and just suddenly looks around Gordon Ramsay's hair and he just goes Gordon Ramsay? What are you doing here? It's like must be so surreal.

27:45Gordon? What are you? Is this a stunt? Unfortunately not mate you're looking at 20 years. You get bollocked by Gordon Ramsay at that moment as well so it's bad enough. If you've got a story about Gordon Ramsay popping up at your funeral Hazel Harriet at your christening or Wayne Lineker crashing your wedding we want to hear from you so you can hit me up on the hotline 24 hours a day 7 days a week the number is 07354 079834 and we will put a QR code up on screen now right we got to talk about it USA are out they got absolutely smashed by belgium and in the words of the belgian fa overturn that great great moment um do you see belgium as well for the fourth goal did the trump dance they copied they didn't do it that well but it was really good we've got a clip of it could have done with one more practice yeah but they all did the donald trump dance that's fucking great clearly everything that week is just properly pumped them up yeah yeah which i'd say the one thing belgium have always struggled for is a bit of like togetherness and like emotional momentum and now they fucking got it which is a problem in a way i kind of feel like it helped this this whole like for all for them yeah definitely yeah definitely yeah they were so up for it i mean it is actually such a shame because i think after some quite a lot of negativity in the build-up the u.s had actually won over a lot of people who you know they were playing good football and people who went out there were charmed by the america that you you don't see on the news like the real America, which is fucking awesome.

29:29And then it all turned from gold to shit when Donald Trump called Infantino and got Follerim Balogun's red card overturned, which is... Well, he didn't get the red card overturned, he got the ban suspended. Every year. Yeah. Which, I mean, let's not get too deep into the anger of it all, but that is a fucking joke. Because it's... Like, we talk about, we call FIFA bent all the time, but this was the moment that their corruption went from just, like, forcing you to have the tournament in a weird place like doing all the shit for money it went from that to like actually affecting the competition itself yeah yeah like it's becoming wwe at that point you know what i mean when there's like just people who can decide the storyline um for people who don't know i mean baligan's been the usa star player he was sent off for a challenge against bosnia a lot of people most of them american are saying it's definitely not a red i still think it looks like a red but i wouldn't i wouldn't trust an american's opinion on on so well i mean like some i would but i have noticed a lot of people complaining say stuff like and this is why soccer sucks it's like you don't actually like it yeah um yeah i mean he stand he rakes down i mean it looks terrible but i don't think he's going for his foot sure but that isn't that still a red yeah look it was yeah i think it it looked fairly accidental but it was also pretty dangerous like you know if his if his ankle had actually snapped then yeah definitely seen more like i reckon 60 percent of people are giving that a red and 40 on that kind of thing like it was a bit 50 50 maybe but red is a red exactly and apparently a lot of the objection for the americans is about the fact that var overused slow-mo which is against the guidance of var let's not bore ourselves with that topic um anyway you get an automatic one match ban fifa then came out and said our disciplinary committee has suspended the ban for a year so They haven't even overturned the red.

31:19And there wasn't really much explanation of why. And then these news started to leak out. The Guardian said they'd spoken to four sources. He said Donald Trump had personally phoned Infantino. I read he phoned three times. Yeah. And FIFA stayed quite shtum on this call. They cited this obscure rule, Article 27, that gives them discretion over bans. You're wondering who introduced Article 27. That was Infantino in 2019. Shock. Anyway, so they were all playing it a bit like, we're not going to really answer any questions. And then Donald Trump's just dropped him right in it. So he just said, yeah, I asked for a review by FIFA.

31:54I saw the play and I'm a person that loves sports. That wasn't a foul. That wasn't even an infraction. This referee is a little bit suspect. If you check his past, he made a call that nobody could believe he's our best player. And he gave him a red card. And then he goes, I didn't even know what the hell a red card was. Right. So why are we listening to your view on whether it was a foul? fucking hell so bad Infantino's then continued to deny that Trump swung it he said like look I took a call I take calls all the time from world leaders and this was all done by an independent disciplinary committee which then was slightly undermined by Senator Ted Cruz who stood in the White House next to Trump and said this to Trump and on behalf of all Americans thank you for getting rid of that ridiculous this red card.

32:48This is his... That was interesting. It was spectacular. There was a reason the FIFA trophy sat here for as long as it did. Oh my God. Mr. President... Oh my God. Even Trump there is a bit like, mate, shut the fuck up. The bit about the trophy is like, well done for totally corrupting that sport so that we can have our striker. Yeah. P45 will be on his desk tomorrow. Yeah. but also Balogun Trump at the moment is trying to get the change the American law so that people who are born in the US no longer automatically have citizenship which is why Balogun is even playing for the US in the first place because his mum came there on holiday when she was pregnant and then wasn't able to leave he's like proper North London isn't he yeah it's fucking mental even Sepp Blatter's been calling out the corruption as HLTCO said on Twitter is like Fred West criticising your paving technique

33:48I actually think Infantino is far worse than Blatter who like I don't like if you want to fill your brown envelope with as much cash as possible I don't want it but it's not affecting the game that much whereas everything Infantino does is just like actually fucking up the matches yeah it's ripping the heart out of football I mean hydration breaks as well that was sort of I'm kind of enjoying them is that weird why are you enjoying them I like the momentum shifts yeah I guess tactically it means that they can introduce yeah different things into the game but I quite like it just to be 45 minutes it just it stops the momentum of the game like when one team's got a bit of momentum it just like it slows it down it's like it's probably like after the first 20 minutes of Mexico like we survived that 20 minutes and then I think in that game I feel like I feel like they actually helped England in those matches because you know England said England said we need to just survive till the first water break just to fend yeah and as well in the Congo game it was a real like game of quarters and I actually think it worked quite well but I know that's an unpopular opinion.

34:48Should say that FIFA suspending a ban is not totally unprecedented. There have been two other incidents. The first one, Ronaldo. So Ronaldo was meant to be suspended for the first two games of this tournament but because he got sent off against Ireland got a three match ban but FIFA suspended two of the matches in the ban so he could play in the World Cup. Interesting. Again, pretty WWE. It's just like we want the fucking Undertaker to be at Royal Rumble. Yeah. And then of the 188 other red cards in World Cup history, only one other player has ever escaped a suspension. And that was friend of the shot, Garincha of goat fucking fame.

35:28Yeah. In the 1962 World Cup where he was the top scorer. That was before automatic bans were in place. But anyway, this does also reek of corruption. so he got red in the semi-final against Chile and therefore a FIFA disciplinary committee had to decide whether he could play in the final fortunately for him the linesman who spotted his infringement failed to show up for the meeting because the Brazilian FA had paid him 10 grand to just go AWOL this was also the World Cup where Brazil had an official team brothel in Santiago in Chile so that's where he disappeared got 10 grand store credit that 10 grand's only good here see ya fellas 10 grand he'll be gone for a long time in 1962 yeah what is that in today's money a lot I don't know what that is in today's Santiago brothel credit but it fills me a lot that is a hell of a lot of brassin it's actually a massive bribe isn't it it must be like a mil still a lot of brassin goes a long way for a linesman of his caliber.

36:41And actually, I think the, to be fair to him, the Chilean president, so the host nation, who he'd been sent off against, phoned FIFA or had a meeting with them and he also persuaded them. So it's quite similar to this incident in a way. But yeah, apparently a lot of, a lot of the argument is, it's not just that Infantino sucks Trump's cock. It's also that FIFA is desperate for this to be the moment that America really embraces football. and so they just really will do whatever he wants firstly they wanted them to go deep in the tournament didn't happen unlucky you can't secondly they don't want Americans to be like this sport's fucking bullshit like you get these soft red cards and then lose the big sighting player yeah is there any world where he gets overthrown like people just start getting fed up Infantino well you saw UEFA like went for him which I guess is an easy win but I was just thinking like after this tournament if the European countries pulled out the World Cup yeah he's fucked like Mastercard aren't going to want to spend as much money on you know what I mean it's over and the European countries are the ones who are most annoyed with him like why don't they just get out because a line has been crossed now in my opinion I think that is like when you've got political intervention in it then whether you think it was read or not it's not the point yeah anyway we've got an episode coming out a very timely episode coming out on Thursday to everyone about Gianni Infantino's story story of the most hated man in football some absolute heinous examples in there including one Zach discovered which is that it is in broadcasters contracts during the World Cup they have to show him on screen once per game in Pantino but they then because they I think it was at the Qatar World Cup they used they showed him on screen like on TV but also in the stadiums and then he started getting booed at every match so they changed it that he was shown on TV but not in the stadiums so good that's fucking amazing it is like product placement though isn't it Everyone that he's with, always ex-footballers.

38:37And have you noticed there's more FIFA branding this time? The logo's way more prominent. It's way more like called the FIFA World Cup. It's all this like personality cult. Bollocks. Reminds me of the baddie out of Thunderbirds. Yeah. He does look like him, doesn't he? What's his name? I can't remember. No, that is good. He does look a bit like a puppet. Yeah. Thunderbirds. Anyway, I'm actually really sad for Americans because I fucking... There he is. He does look like him. that's such a good shout it's the eyebrows that would look he's got the pointy head yeah what's his name and it the hood the hood the hood from Thunderbirds that's really good he looks like I feel like if they made a puppet of Infantino it would look very much like that especially if he's a villain yeah I'm sad for Americans I love America love Americans was getting behind the team and then all I wanted was for them to lose yeah which was great oh well anyway yeah we've got to check out that Infantino episode on Thursday we're obviously a little bit nervous because last time we called FIFA bent they threatened to sue us but yeah they did back down we're ready we're ready well I'm just gonna say again they are fucking bent and you know this time we've got some of the best lawyers in town behind us Gianni so you better lawyer up because we are represented by Leon the lion we're represented by an AI lion in a suit mate so what are you going to do about that what are you going to do when victor and leon come for you from the industrial estate where they're based fill in the form fifa uh yeah injury lawyers for you best lawyers in town i was thinking do you think it's ever happened that someone who works at injury lawyers for you has had an accident at work and what happens there in the office yeah it must be quite fun a bit friendly fun yeah if you slip is it like oh I presume I presume that online form is actually confidential so you could yeah I think it's a conflict of interest it probably is yeah but unfortunately they're the only injury lawyers worth talking to if you've had an accident at work tell you who could use them Jordan Henderson Hendo needs it yeah because that is very much an injury at work but it's self-inflicted I suppose yeah it was an accident was it was it negligence on the part of FIFA.

40:54Yeah, or the Mexican FA. Yeah, the slippery evening. Yeah, it was. Didn't take proper precautions on the thunderstorms. Take FIFA to the cleaners, Jordan, once you get out of that hospital, if you're listening. Yeah, injury lawyers for you. The personal injury lawyers who fight for you if you've had an accident that wasn't your fault. And I'll put the details in the episode description. Obviously, Portugal are out as well. Not with a bang, but a whimper. it was absolutely pathetic terrible game but that was set to be such an epic game yeah it happens it happens I was really looking forward after the the intensity of the England game the night before of just just watch just enjoying a good game yeah alas yeah Roberto Martinez before the World Cup said he's a big believer in numerology and the importance of number six and Portugal were eliminated on the 6th of July by a goal from Mikel Moreno who wears number six there you go yeah he did see it coming he saw it yeah not in the right way yeah he's who was number 6 for Portugal and what is the importance of the number 6 I don't know he just thinks it's it's not scary like the number 23 is it is that the Jim Carrey horror film don't want to be watching that again freaked me out for weeks Giappolini I don't think he played there you go yeah I don't know why 6 it's like 8 is big in China isn't it it's lucky yeah did you see Ronaldo's interview after the game he said that it was his last World Cup which kind of makes sense I think he was sort of scraping his way in this time you don't think he'll Brian Johnson it he cannot play at 45 he looked fucked for this one he'll be very good if he Brian Johnson didn't he can't he looks so slow maybe the next Euros just about I'm just bored of him but anyway he did an interview after the game he said how do I feel today the same with a clear conscience I gave my best I've won three titles with Portugal before Cristiano Portugal hadn't won any titles so I'm happy why are you talking about yourself in the third person it's ridiculous the three titles are the Euros and Nations and two Nations I'm sorry you can't get not a title 2019 and 2025 Nations that's like when people say the Community Shield was a title yeah it's not or that crappy thing that England won before France 98 the Tournois I count that I was hoping that the third one would be like the Iberian Cup for like a one-off friendly against Spain the Audi Cup in Qatar Portugal, Saudi, Qatar and Egypt but he did say there was another bit of his quote he said Euro 2016 was the most important one no shit for me it is the same level as winning the World Cup no it's not I just don't think the Euros is quite it's really good it's a big deal I'd love to win love it for England to win the Euros but The World Cup is on another level.

43:49Yeah. How can he even argue that? I think he's just absolutely bitter about Messi being so great. Yeah. I mean, so counting those three, his two Nations League titles, it does mean he's got the same number of international trophies as Messi, which I do feel like is the main reason he's in this hole. Messi's got two Coppers and the World Cup, which... So he beats him on every top trumps there. isn't he in line for the golden boot this time as well Messi or is he not far off yeah there's a big old race all the superstars Bape Kane Haaland Haaland Messi go on Harry it's kind of been one of those tournaments where there haven't been that many breakthrough stars you've not heard of but the big guns have really shown up the midfielder from Morocco is on everyone's lips can't remember his name young lad but it is on my lips everyone's lips Quinonez he was really good he was actually good yeah yeah But Haaland will be coming up against England.

44:48It's Norway next, isn't it? Well, fear him. You've seen the stats about Dan Byrne, kid. Yeah. Dan Byrne's going to shut him down. So what is the stats? Like Newcastle have... City have failed to beat Newcastle like nine of ten. So Haaland has scored just once against Newcastle in ten competitive meetings as a Man City player. A strike and a three-all draw at St James' Park in August 2022. Since then, he's gone nine games without scoring against him and has never scored again in six visits to the Etihad. And apparently Dan Byrne's tight man marking is the emblem to that record. Yeah. So England got a secret weapon.

45:23Dan Byrne. With his 40 yard headers. Yeah. Sadly the game is at 10pm on Saturday night which means JP will be here. Tucked up in bed. No, but Lewis Capaldi. We'll be at Lewis Capaldi. I'll be listening to Hold Me While You Wait or whatever it's called. Think of us though watching the game. Hold Me While You Wait. Where is that game? Sorry, where is that show? I'm not going to this fucking show, by the way. I've solved the ticket. Just Lily Allen and the Sugar Babes. But it's British summertime. It's a high park. Yeah. But I do something nice for my wife. Just be aware, getting home is going to be a bit tricky because there's some football on.

46:00It's quite a big game. Fucking screwed here. It happens every four years. Obviously, Norway knocked out Brazil. Which? I was quite looking forward to England-Brazil, to be honest. Also, I'm scared of Ireland. Yeah, yeah, they do look good. I was also, I was really hoping after Brazil got knocked out that there would be some mental Brazilian meltdowns, but the press was actually relatively reserved. I was looking on O Globo, the news site, and it wasn't even the top story the day after they got knocked out. I don't know if that was their policy, is just sort of pretend it didn't happen. yeah it seems more like it's more sort of sad resignation than than anger I was hoping for like effigies of Carlo Ancelotti being burned at a stake but is this this is sort of their England's 2010s yeah shows how good they are that Ancelotti is their Roy Hodgson yeah Vinicius Junior is their Andy Carroll they'll be like looking back god remember these guys you got capped by Brazil Marquinhos Bruno Gimaraish he's it's a bit of a bang average Brazil team isn't it the midfield the midfield it's alright Paqueta Paqueta Casabiro's the weakness actually isn't it Casabiro's pretty old yeah Bruno Gimaraish and Paqueta they're good they're like decent Premier League players but it's almost like Gimaraish is really good Neymar coming on to save him and you know he was having a row with that keeper Neymar was so box office so I loved it I love him he's a shit house yeah but he was so good it was like it was the dying moments of the game first of all you're wasting time talking before the penalty then you score the penalty and waste time trash talking the keeper instead of fishing the ball out the net like obviously it was a long shot that you were going to even get another chance but like find out and then like 60 seconds later he's crying on his knees crying like a fucking baby I fucking love him did you see there was a video of Casemiro crying in an interview afterwards as well which is actually quite sad reporters are comforting him I shunp I love

48:06They both got a hand on me.

48:13It's like someone's just died. It's hard to say words in these moments, right? Because it's always a dream. When you start playing, when you... We shouldn't laugh, but it's quite good. yeah yeah it is just fucking funny there were some quite good clips of fans on Copacabana they had a big screen up on Copacabana and there was quite good clips of fans crying as well

48:47oh god

48:52they do they do really care yeah I think it's it's probably it's the nation that has the most like fanatical football I was talking to a Brazilian and they were saying that the schools close if there's a game during school time. Hospitals have big screens up in the hospital. So everything shuts down. No one goes to work. Mental. Granddad's dying but everyone's in the fucking everyone's in the canteen. I'm trying to do the commentary. Trying to hear Danny Murphy's fourth update about his fucking cat. If he's flatlining, turn it off.

49:32yeah I'm sad to lose them England and Brazil would have been quite box office and it's probably our one chance to beat Brazil in the World Cup but I fear Norway I do they've got some very good players that row thing can get in the bin yeah I fucking hate that but I was saying that in the pub and everyone was like really offended by it and cue they like it weirdly I'll tell you where they all love the Viking row and that is Henley Festival oh yeah big time might get out I was reading it's caused a bit of a stir in Scandinavia because Sweden have come out and said that the Vikings who rode like that were actually Swedish Vikings and Norwegian ones were more like seafaring with sails sails yeah which ones which ones controversy at sea which ones pillaged our poor monks both of them it was absolutely open season yeah but yeah I mean they've got got some great players Harland Odegaard Noosa Oscar Bob of course Yasmin Yasmin our producer was telling us that the new new film chart for Oscar Bob is Darude Sandstorm just with like

50:47that's really good I absolutely love if they were doing that instead of Viking Row yeah get that out yeah I'm that whole stand doing that unbelievable quite hard to keep in tune but yeah Also, I think we've told this story before on the pod, the Harlan story. Have you heard this one? No. So we heard this story from a very good source, actually, that when Harlan turned 20, he was at Borussia Dortmund, and some of his, not his teammates, but his entourage sort of pals, whatever, jokingly asked him who he wanted to shag most in the world. and Harlan picked out this Norwegian glamour model who basically like the Katie Price of Norway.

51:33So big pin up when Erling was a teenager, but now like about 40 and pretty heavily Botoxed and looking a bit weird, if we're honest. And they basically got in touch with her, asked if she was up for it. And she said yes. And they flew her over. No way. Apparently he had it off of her. Apparently so. He is quite every man, Erling Harlan. I imagine him being quite into like milfs Mumsnet vibes I'm sure Mumsnet Give it the Norway game And he'll be the next pin up on that My Viking I'd let him row my boat

52:16Maybe they'll go for Oscar Bob Who knows I didn't realise Mumsnet was so horny Big time I got lost in there for a few hours surely you've frequented Mum's Dirt Jack yeah get some pretty pretty harrowing tips on hand foot and mouth stuff like that if you want to really scare yourself about some weird illness then that's the play actually that Harland story isn't the only seedy tale from Norwegian football so a few years back SK Bran Norwegian top flight side they were having a bit of a bad season struggling against relegation and they decided to hold this team meal to you know build team spirit try and reboot their season and unfortunately for them the squad bonded a little too well and ended up heading onto this nightclub where they picked up seven women and a group of 12 players then headed back to the club stadium and had an orgy on the pitch fuck and the whole thing got caught on CCTV so they arrive at the ground just after midnight get naked and then they're just shagging on the turf for about five hours at it on the semi-circle yeah did it reboot their season?

53:33I think it did I don't think they got relegated they have just been relegated I saw oh have they because they didn't do the special ritual yeah exactly because there's that other Norwegian side Tromso who like they thought there was a curse and they ended up like slaughtering a cow on the turf I think it was a guy we talked about it we talked about that a Halloween special about two years ago so I get were they kind of thinking the same? Uh, I, yeah, maybe that was it. Exercise. The guy was also the Croatian player who, um, shagged a Playboy model on the pitch and like, I want to say Hadjik Split or something, or Dido Mozagro, because he's, he's also the one who, this is one of my, I think this is maybe my favorite story of all time, that this Norwegian, um, sorry, Croatian player, whose name I've forgotten, was on holiday with his, his wife and kid, and they were on this beach and a British couple grabbed their child and ran off because they thought it was Madeleine McCann.

54:33They just like saw this Croatian kid just running around and it's like that looks just like Madeleine McCann and put two and two together. Better get her. Get her. Just ran off. Doing your bit for the country. Yeah. Definitely had a few beers. Yeah. Not sure they've been to bed. Yeah. Also I remember We looked it up and like the age, like this girl was like the age that Madeline McCann was when she'd been abducted. And it was like 12 years later. It's like, Madeline McCann would be like 18 now. What are you doing? How long do you think they had to talk each other into it when they were like, do you think she does look like her?

55:05Should we do it? We should do it. Everyone, we'll be heroes back home. They got her back, obviously. And the footballer and his wife were just like, what the fuck is your problem? It's a drunk British government. Sorry, we were really fucked up.

55:24a lot of celebs at the norway brazil game you see leonardo dicaprio is there chris rock leo looked quite bored yeah yeah the bit he was just on his phone did he have airpods in no he looked like he was voice noting you ever hear that rumor that he when he shags he has airpods in yeah yeah he's just do you think he's got a podcast or music on i always wonder i reckon nothing i hope he what you think it's just like whales mating I thought it was MGMT by kids by MGMT that was what I heard just on repeat that's my jam man they'll kill my buzz yeah I think a podcast would be more sinister Steve Bartlett yeah Dario the CEO he's not got extra shot on a Z someone I know who I won't name does know someone who shagged him and said that he did have the headphones in.

56:16And I think they were saying it was whale noises. Wow. And there was also a thing like you get approached in a bar and they're like, Mr. DiCaprio would like to spend the night with you. And then you go to this like hotel and there's like an antechamber where you sign an NDA first. And then they're like, okay, Mr. DiCaprio is waiting for you in the next room. It's like a sort of like... Business deal. Yeah, a job issue or something. So weird. Yeah. But to be honest, if Leo approached me in that fashion... Oh yeah. I'm fucking signing I'm signing that NDA no problemo you get your fucking whale noises on Leo let's dance baby I guess I'm a bit old for him while we're talking about A-list celebs JP you've obviously been glued to the coverage of Taylor Swift's wedding oh big time surprised you didn't go down to Madison Square Garden just to sort of stand outside and sing along that was why you were too tired to stay up for the England game Saturday night he'd been up live streaming too much going on sorry can I just clarify something so the game was on Sunday night and then you didn't want to go because you had Lily Allen on Tuesday night and you didn't want to be too tired for Lily Allen a big week is tiring I just figured to myself I'm going to do the right thing for Lily Allen and just smile Lily is my World Cup final this is my final well I hope you lose anyway on the Taylor Swift wedding among the guests I know there were like a thousand people that was a fucking weird event but was Saracen's rugby player Alex Goode who's not even a very big name rugby player but I think his wife's a record exec right I mean good for him he's in Taylor Swift 0.01 % of listeners yeah that's how you worm your way in yeah you're just below him or you would've got the input yeah did you see by the way for England and Norway there's a resale ticket on for 6 million yeah I feel like people just punt that.

58:13Yeah. But like, surely you actually do want to get some money for it. Yeah, put it on for something realistic. Because I guess DiCaprio is probably the sort of person who he's like, I want to go to that game and he gets the like 200 grand one. Surely even he would bulk. Six million is insane. Is it people just taking the piss for a bit? Yeah, I reckon people just PR. Or do you think it's, yeah, maybe that's it. Someone from the sun gets, who knows somebody's got to take it. It's like, can you stick up for six million and then screenshot it and then take it down? Yeah. Yeah. because you can just change the price.

58:42I think they are starting at six grand though. Really? Yeah, pretty mental. They're absolute gold dust at this point. Unless you're an England fan by the name of Mick Hewitt, who he was flying out for the tournament earlier. He was meant to go to Boston, see England-Ghana in the group stage. 65-year-old Leeds United diehard fan. And his flight was going via Barcelona. Then he never made it to Boston. And he went completely AWOL. His family couldn't get a hold of him for 10 days. obviously everyone's super worried they put out pleas online, Interpol was searching for him, Spanish authorities British embassy, you know at this point the family's expecting the worst and then the British consulate rang to say they'd found him and had him on the line, he spoke to his brother and it turned out that Mick had lost his phone in Barcelona which had his flight tickets on it and so instead of just like, I don't know, internet cafe embassy, he was like fuck it I'll just stay here in Barcelona, watch the World Cup here 10 days that's a proper proper dad decision yeah i'd rate it actually uh he just watched the world cup from there and just didn't think to let anyone know no and he only got found because this um copper off-duty copper was on holiday there and was a leeds united fan and walked into this bar in a leeds shirt and mick did this like leeds united salute i think you bang your heart yeah and uh this bloke had seen the stuff online and was like oh he's a leeds fan hang on you're the are you missing?

1:00:07Yeah. And so the guy told the embassy and yeah, Mick's brother said he was just sunning himself, having a pint, not knowing the world was going frantic. I love that. He's a pick of Mick. It sort of makes more sense when you see a pick of him. One way ticket to Les Ramblas, senor. I actually really admire it. That is a man who lives in the moment. Yeah. But also they were like, why didn't you just go to the embassy? And he was like, well, I hadn't lost my passport or money. So I thought they wouldn't help. He just lost his, surely you could just get a new phone. Internet cafe. get the flight ticket yeah there's loads of things you could do but getting on the pit in Barcelona is probably the best yeah I do rate I really rate it I thought it was going to be like another like that Mexico 86 dog that we were talking about the guy who popped up for a pint of milk and didn't come home for 12 years he was probably trying to do that yeah he was rabbit head he was following in his footsteps yeah anyway shout out Mick I think he's still there is he?

1:00:58I'm going this weekend I might try and are you not here for the England matches? I'm watching it in Spain though but I will be watching it quite a big game not to be in England before. I know, but Atomic Kitten are playing at Monasterio in Barcelona and I just can't miss that. Do you know what? Atomic Kitten would be slightly more example. Yeah, they'd do the song, surely. And speaking of, I have heard people doing the... Tommy Tuchel. Yeah. Churchill bombed your mum. Football's coming home again. I've heard it. Someone messaged me on it about it. Someone messaged me on Instagram about it. I didn't really want to send it.

1:01:27Well, they were asking... How did it go? I didn't want to get like... Oh, I replied. I think it was on the Upshot account, yeah. and I've heard it heard it being sung now yeah started it I think Tommy Ticker will be fine with that yeah I don't know that many England songs anymore anyway part of him that might quite like that if you don't bomb those mums on mums now that's Tommy's job couple of V2 rockets coming your way
