In short
Topic
- Hosts discuss Apple’s September 19 iPhone lineup and what they’re ordering: iPhone 17 base, iPhone 17 Pro/Pro Max, and the “iPhone Air” (thin, controversial model).
- They also cover AirPods Pro 3 features (ANC, smaller design, new ear tip size, improved mic, battery claims).
- Tech/business news: Tesla “Full Self-Driving” changes (abandoning unsupervised autonomy), Google admitting the open web is in rapid decline, Anthropic settlement over allegedly pirated books for AI training, and a Corsair memory class-action settlement over “false advertising” of RAM speeds.
- Personal segments: travel delays and a “daily driver challenge” plan to test all three iPhones.
Guest backgrounds
- No guests are clearly identified in the provided transcript. The episode appears to be hosted by the regular WAN Show hosts (Linus and Luke are referenced directly).
Key claims / positions
- iPhone 17 base: now includes 256GB starting storage, 120Hz display, and “square sensor”/center-stage front camera design that expands framing from square to vertical.
- iPhone Air: eSIM-only, very thin (about 5.64mm), uses titanium, but is polarizing due to tradeoffs (single 48MP camera, shorter battery claim vs larger models, and a new modem “C1X” with unknown performance).
- AirPods Pro 3: improved ANC (“2x” claim), smaller earbud/stems, longer battery claim, new double-XS ear tip for kids, and an “ultra low noise” microphone.
- Tesla: “Full Self-Driving” definition changed; promise of unsupervised autonomy is dropped.
- Google: open web is declining “rapidly.”
- Corsair: settlement alleges advertised DDR4/DDR5 speeds require firmware/overclocking; overclocking may fail.
- Anthropic: $1.5B settlement proposed/partially blocked; copyright training question remains unresolved.
Notable examples
- The hosts compare iPhone lineup pricing (base ~$800; Pro Max ~$2000; Pro Max storage up to 2TB).
- They discuss telephoto usefulness using a personal example (S23 Ultra telephoto helping at a kid’s concert).
- Travel example: Luke’s Sofia-to-Berlin-to-Vancouver journey derailed by delays and missed booked trains/expensive last-minute rebooking.

Automatic transcript. May contain errors.0:03Luke Lafreniere:What is up you fine folks and welcome to the... That's never happened before.
0:11Linus Sebastian:I swear that's never happened before.
0:14Luke Lafreniere:First time. First time. Look, I'm almost 40. We got a great show for you guys today. uh apple's event was actually maybe kind of exciting it could just be that my excitement about the new airpods pro threes is bleeding over into all the other products that might be true but they look really cool maybe the rest of them are crap but the airpods pro threes look pretty freaking awesome in other news this week the real self-driving was the friends we made along the way Tesla has changed the definition of full self-driving, completely abandoning their promise of unsupervised autonomous driving. We'll be talking about that later.
1:00Luke Lafreniere:What else we got this week?
1:01Linus Sebastian:Nintendo gets another video game patent, and the whole internet loved that. No, no, they didn't. Also, for the people that said that the AI summary things were definitely not doing anything to search, Google has now admitted that the open web is in rapid decline.
1:20Luke Lafreniere:yeah rapid decline not just regular decline the rapidest of declines nice awesome don't you love when our corporate overlords confirm what we knew all along yeah i just yeah
1:51Luke Lafreniere:the show today is brought to you by proton vessi squarespace and delta hub alongside of course our wrap partner dbrand our laptop partner dell and our chair partner secret lab that's right my friends it's hard times we have seven sponsors on the way and show we're gonna we're gonna spread them out a little bit though kind of sprinkle them here and there we need we need more uh like uh the
2:21Linus Sebastian:product placement ones we need to just go full like uh sure we could wear like like nike like
2:27Luke Lafreniere:headbands and stuff what's that movie oh man that movie with uh ricky bobby gremlins no not ricky
2:35Linus Sebastian:bobby the music one the music movie la la land was it also comedy talking about it was a comedy Walk hard No details for anyone you're great world. There we go. Oh my god. The music one Like the pizza hut breaking the fourth wall talking right to camera You know that every movie has music in it, right? Oh, I just whacked the mic. I'm sorry. You know...
3:05Luke Lafreniere:No, I meant Wayne's world. We knew that So Tired He's Kind of Drunk Linus was fun, but I don't think we knew that So Tired He's Kind of Drunk Luke was this fun. You're stupid today.
3:20Linus Sebastian:So for context, I started my journey home at I think it was like 4 p.m. Thursday Bulgarian time yes and I have been on various That means something to me transportation ever since then perhaps planes trains and automobiles another great movie with music in it three planes three trains two Ubers and one Emma picking me up from the airport that was the chain of events that had to get me home and two of the planes were late nice I think every single train was late two of them were late by like 50 minutes the only answer is
4:06Luke Lafreniere:gamer plane and gamer train I couldn't need it all gamer car and gamer fire truck
4:12Linus Sebastian:You have the gamer van already. We got the fire truck, bro. And the fire truck. We got the fire truck. Okay, cool. That's the only answer. So road is already taken care of. Yep. Okay, where are we?
4:22Luke Lafreniere:Apple product launch. Apple is launching a ton of new products on September 19th. They are all getting their new square sensor center stage front cam. Okay, I swear. I don't know if I ever said it in a video or if I ever told you, but I totally thought of this idea like ages ago. did I ever talk to you about the idea of having a square sensor so that you could just like shoot landscape like this or so that you could just shoot square and then you could like I remember
4:51Linus Sebastian:later and it could just have safe zones on it or whatever you had that idea but I remember this
4:55Luke Lafreniere:vaguely I don't even care who had the idea first I love that Apple is doing this so their new selfie cams on the iPhone 17 lineup just allow you to go oh yeah I'm taking a vertical selfie my friends who are paid by me are now nearby they don't want to get that close right now apparently yeah there we go and boom it'll it'll just expand the frame and use additional sensor in order to fit them okay it's powered by a high apple intelligence which means it will probably suck for a bit yeah i wonder what the ai is doing hopefully not much hopefully very little yeah and And if all it's doing is recognizing human faces, which realistically machine learning has been pretty good at for a minute or two.
5:46Luke Lafreniere:Very effective. Very good. Then I see that as just an outstanding feature. They all get the new Ceramic Shield 2 front glass. I mean, Apple's front glass has been for a while now. Original Ceramic Shield was already awesome. This new one, I mean, presumably could only be better. but that's not necessarily true because we have seen cases where from one iteration of Corning Gorilla Glass to another, sometimes there are trade-offs. Like you gain some drop resistance, but you lose some scratch resistance and so on and so forth. They also, all, all the new iPhones start with 256 gigs of storage, and even the base iPhone 17 is now 120 flipping hertz on the display that brings them up to speed with cheap android phones from years ago but what it also does if we can sort of put away the snarky hat for a minute is it takes away the obstacles that many iphone upgraders who are sitting there going okay when are they going to do it when are they going to do it when are they going to do it i want i want those features that have been highlights of the pro series but i want them on the regular iphone because i don't want to spend two thousand us dollars on the top spec iphone 17 pro max i think is uh two grand what a name but it has two terabytes of storage in it that is absurd the lineup just honestly looks really good
7:13Linus Sebastian:the only thing this this like base model iphone 17 though like actually looks pretty killer i mean
7:19Luke Lafreniere:apple's socs have been just playing better for a very long time at this point eight gigs of ram is plenty for ios even if we realistically do need more to run android really smoothly with heavy task switching uh 6.3 inch display 48 megapixel so yeah it has two 48 megapixel sensors on the back personally ah man oh this is actually a tough one i was about to say i don't use my telephoto much but the times i use it boy do i ever like it so i shouldn't even say the times i use it because i don't have a telephoto i'm running a pixel 9a right now but yvonne on her S23 Ultra had a really great telephoto.
7:59Luke Lafreniere:And if we were at a kid's concert or whatever, her phone was the only one of ours that was even remotely useful. So having a telephoto lens when you need it can be pretty nice. Up to 30 hours of video playback,$800. That's a lot of money. It is a lot of money. That's a lot of money. Especially for a base model. But it is the current gen phone, which gets one more year of product support compared to if you buy a last gen one for less. and it's not more than last year it's the same starting price as last year but we get a 120 hertz display we get more storage so i'm not even in a in a world where basically everything is going up in price um yeah it's like the sequel to water world it's just inflation world starring kevin costner whose sense of self-importance has inflated at the same level of as as money over the last 30 years um to be to be clear to be clear i don't hate kevin costner i just i just think he seems to think he's a lot more relevant than he is that's all i have no idea i would watch water world water world 2 though he he starred in one super amazing film dances with wolves that i watched as a child and didn't understand because i was a kid sure and then um And then he was in that movie with Ashton Kutcher that I thought was solidly okay.
9:28Linus Sebastian:What movie is that?
9:29Luke Lafreniere:I don't remember. It involved, like, rescuing people, I think, and a helicopter. Can't remember. Scrappy DP says he wants to own Montana. That wouldn't even necessarily surprise me that much. The Guardian. The Guardian, yeah, I found it, yeah. Oh, this guy. Oh, this guy, he says about Kevin Costner. How do you avoid? I think the people genuinely want to know How do you avoid knowing about celebrities? I just I just don't care
10:00Linus Sebastian:I just like deeply don't care But they're everywhere I think that's why though I have a rather intense level of lack of care So I'll like recognize her face a little bit Right But like I don't know
10:14Luke Lafreniere:Right so you know which one is Kevin Costner right? Yeah
10:16Linus Sebastian:So you know who Ashton Kutcher is then? In the photo oh man anyway i forgot and then i was like oh yeah this is he did the like that that tv show
10:28Luke Lafreniere:that 70s show or whatever he's on there right yeah yeah yeah him and the rapist the rapist oh yeah you don't know about that no yeah see yeah it was a whole thing i don't follow yeah don't worry about it yep um so the most controversial new iphone is of course the iPhone Air. It uses the A19 Pro processor, so it uses the same chip as the 17 Pro. It has 12 gigs of RAM like the 17 Pro. It has a six and a half inch display, which is kind of in between the 17 Pro and the 17 Pro Max, but it does give up some things. So it has a 48 megapixel single main camera rather than having multiple shooters it has the new c1x modem which we don't know if that's giving something up or gaining something yeah we'll see if i had to guess i'd say that and i could 100 be wrong about this if i had to guess i'd say the c1x is super efficient but maybe compromises somewhere else where the the full-size phones with their full-size batteries didn't need
11:40Linus Sebastian:to say if it was just raw better i feel like they would put on other ones but i also feel like this
11:44Luke Lafreniere:kind of like an experimental device to a certain degree it is e-sim only and only boasts 27 hours of video playback rather than 30 for the iphone 17 33 for the 17 pro and a whopping 39 39 hours for the 17 pro max um there are some extra benefits maybe so this was something that is always fun to watch apple do you remember when they went unapologetically plastic and then they were like actually plastic plastic stupid like immediately after that and just pretended that never happened oh yeah yeah you remember that okay so do you remember how on their pro models apple leaned super hard into titanium iphone's titanium you know like they're titanium yeah okay so so that happened and then and then the new iphone 17 pro and pro max came out it's a song okay what song is that it's called titanium that makes sense to be honest david guena or gueta or whatever it is see i i don't know like i just okay but let's back up again you see images and read words right oh right
13:13Luke Lafreniere:dyslexic see like i can't i can't not know what a song is called or who it's by because it just
13:20Linus Sebastian:like it shows up and i read it okay but i just i don't think i've listened to that song i know
13:26Luke Lafreniere:there's no way you've not heard this song there's there's actually it's completely impossible that you have never heard this song. If you play it, we're gonna get more ad
13:36Linus Sebastian:than we did from you talking about the guy on 70s. It's worth it, I don't even care.
13:43Linus Sebastian:Okay, yeah.
13:44Luke Lafreniere:Well, yeah! Anyway, what are we supposed to be talking about?
13:50Linus Sebastian:You like all the top 40 slop stuff. I don't listen to it that much. You just called Sia Slop.
13:56Luke Lafreniere:Sia? That's extremely disrespectful. Who's Sia? It doesn't matter she was the you know song whatever whatever on my little pony and she's great okay i don't i don't remember her but she's on my little pony anyway um so the point out man chat that you guys are you guys are rough someone's like i i loved sia loved her music someone's like she's still alive guys okay you know what it's fine the point is that apple leans super heavily into titanium for their marketing for their pro phones yeah and then this time around they leaned super hard into aluminum they were all like dude really aluminum has so much thermal performance it's like so much better than titanium aluminum is great you guys are gonna love it aluminum interesting oh by the way on the iphone air it's titanium i was just gonna say the air is titanium and i'm just i'm kind of sitting here going like can apple just can they just get can they get some consistency can they can they please get some consistency in their marketing for these materials can you just can you just say we put titanium on the pro phones before because it's really shiny and hard glistening even you might say right and then can you just say you know aluminum still good like that would have been fine too but this titanium it has a nice finish and it's super
15:37Linus Sebastian:like if you just told us exactly what it was looks awesome and you didn't wank it off so hard
15:44Luke Lafreniere:in the first place then it wouldn't be so embarrassing every time you have to backtrack and use a different material um so yeah the iphone air uses titanium presumably because it is so flipping thin i don't know whoops how it's even possible that uh my notes don't include the thickness i believe it's 5.4 millimeters though uh 5.64 millimeters that is nuts that is wild that is like i can't wait to get it in my hands finally i'll have a phone that does it feel
16:22Linus Sebastian:whack that it has an enormous camera bump that's like thicker than the phone um i mean it's no
Read the full transcript
16:28Luke Lafreniere:different yes yes and and i can see why it's a controversial device i can see why it's really polarizing but i do think that there are going to be people that it appeals to and i'm i'm excited just to sort of marvel at the thinness. It looks super cool. I mean, it's not... Of some of the phone? Yes. Yes, that's fair. Why don't they just make like half of it two mils thick and go like, world's thinnest phone, and then most of it is just that big? Why don't you just join the podcast if you're going to talk all the time?
16:59Linus Sebastian:Shut up.
17:03Luke Lafreniere:Technically, that's not what I said. Technically, I invited him to join the podcast. Let the record show.
17:08Linus Sebastian:You did so aggressively, though. It wasn't very inviting. That's just how I talk to people. You invited someone. It's true.
17:13Luke Lafreniere:Look, I really like being friends with you.
17:16Linus Sebastian:I do believe that. It's something I value.
17:28Linus Sebastian:Come over tomorrow. Okay.
17:33Luke Lafreniere:So where were we? Okay, I'm excited to check it out. I'm a little less excited about the 17 Pro and the 17 Pro Max, but they are far from the biggest disappointment. I think the biggest disappointment, sort of broadly in the tech community, is where the f*** is a replacement for the Mini. We haven't gotten a new Mini since, what was it, 12 or 13. Dan, do you remember? Does anyone know? Let me know in the chat. I believe it was either iPhone 12 or 13 generation. 13. So it's been four freaking years. people who are still rocking minis like andrew in the camera department loves his mini and he's just like yep it's getting a little long in the tooth anytime now apple give me a new mini and personally even though that one is sort of more broadly upsetting to people i'm actually bummed that the iphone 17 plus isn't a thing because i thought the 16 plus was a great middle ground it It gave me the bigger screen that I wanted, but it didn't give me any of the paying a couple hundred US extra dollars for things that I don't really need that the Pro had.
18:41Luke Lafreniere:So if there was a 17 +, that would honestly be the one that I would be most interested in this generation, especially now that it has 120Hz refresh rate. And yeah, that's probably the only thing that I was really missing out on with the 16 +, when I did my daily driver challenge. So we're actually going to mix up the daily driver challenge this time around. The title of WAN show today is I bought my iPhone and I did, but I bought all three. And so what I'm going to do is I'm going to use all the pockets in our awesome cargo pants from LTTstore.com. And I'm going to carry them all. And I'm going to see which one I gravitate toward.
19:22Luke Lafreniere:So we'll do all the unboxings on Short Circuit. and then basically i'm gonna see which one do i actually enjoy using the most interesting yeah because i literally don't know i don't know if the air is gonna entice me could you dupe your sim uh okay so the air is e-sim only that's interesting so that is theoretically i believe yes but generally speaking i use i use my cellular connection almost not at all and what i've been doing over the last little while actually because just hospital like crazy i've had i've had more issues with graphene os okay that doesn't mean that you shouldn't use it okay it just means that
20:07Linus Sebastian:i think i'm done with it um i might be kind of screwed anyways i've been trying to diagnose it over the last couple days the well i mean i might be able to just repair it i don't know but the usb port on my phone might be like super dying. Bummer. Yeah.
20:20Luke Lafreniere:I mean, do you need it? Wireless charging?
20:23Linus Sebastian:Oh.
20:24Luke Lafreniere:Like, I don't know.
20:26Linus Sebastian:I have literally zero of those. I mean, get some.
20:31Luke Lafreniere:There's this thing. I could join the new age. It can be exchanged for goods and services like it's...
20:36Linus Sebastian:I'd prefer to not.
20:37Luke Lafreniere:Yeah, I know. I know. Oh my god. Do you know how many people think that you are like destitutely poor? Oh, I'm good. Because of like the way they're doing fine i know i know they don't
20:53Linus Sebastian:any i don't i don't mind plugging something in i don't know i that's i don't this doesn't feel like uh either i actually i actually plug in every yeah like i don't i i don't know yeah i do find um some of the like mag what is the name of it on android because mag safe for iphone right yeah I don't know. Whatever the magnetic one is. MagSafe ripoff. For sure. Pixel snap, I think Google calls it. That is kind of neat in some applications. Yeah, it is. I could see that. Yeah, it's great for the car. Yes, but almost nowhere that I would actually have my phone. Yeah. So like, I haven't really cared.
21:30Linus Sebastian:Because if I'm going to sleep, I can plug my phone in. It's really not a big deal.
21:33Luke Lafreniere:Honestly, I'm the same. Like, so many of the sort of the Apple user reasons why I should accept nothing less than an iphone they don't resonate with me and magsafe is definitely one of them i have android auto and carplay in my car so i just put my phone down or i just leave it in my pocket it's wireless and in both of our family main family vehicles now so i don't need to charge my car man battery life on the pixel 9a and on the latest iphones is like so good i'm at 75 pixel the 9a specifically has
22:09Linus Sebastian:just flipping outstanding battery life. I've heard great things about the 9A specifically from like a ton of people.
22:17Luke Lafreniere:It is not a perfect phone. No. But the battery life is great. It's outstanding. Best I've ever seen on an Android.
22:24Linus Sebastian:Okay, what are your downsides? Because I care about very little outside of battery life these days.
22:29Luke Lafreniere:It's just kind of a butthead sometimes. It's just kind of like dumb sometimes. Is that just a pixel? Okay, there. I held down for voice and it's like, oops, something went wrong. And it's like, why? Why do you just randomly do that a lot of the time? Just like, it's just, it's just not perfect. That's all. And whenever I'm recommending -
22:48Linus Sebastian:It sounds like it might just be pixel issues.
22:49Luke Lafreniere:Well, it might be. It might also be that I'm using SwiftKey and, you know, someone, no one at any point ever tried SwiftKey on a pixel and noticed, oh, hey, this doesn't work. We should probably work with our partner, Microsoft and or Google to address it, like whatever. um so i just it's not perfect i do get some buggy behavior so make of that what you will but the battery life is great back to graphene os for a second oh no i um i just it's really cool and my god is it ever snappy like it's so responsive uh battery life also outstanding like this is the one i've got my sim in right now and it's at 99 today and i have i have used it today but very little uh but i have used it and it's like just it just at idle it like sips power um it it's it's just it's everything that a pixel already was but like it's more secure and it's kind of snappier and more responsive.
23:59It's just that when you go to do something new
24:02Luke Lafreniere:that you haven't done before, like say, for example, same thing. If I wanted to use voice dictation in order to do something, I might have to hold this button where it will say voice typing. To use voice input, you must download and install Google Voice Search. Download. it takes me to google by google llc and it's installed so i click uh i don't know i go i go i go i go i go back and then i i don't know i try again and then it uh download and oh no not that okay hold on wait there's a thing in between oh i'll try the download there no wait that just brings me back here and i could solve this i'm sure i could solve this i mean i i have a graphene os team member in my discord that i i can't linuxism i probably will ask how to solve this but um it takes a special sort of person to feel like fucking solving something like that instead of just using their phone and and you know what sometimes i'm that kind of person um but for my phone i don't think i am at least not anymore at least not right now and for me where my privacy is quite compromised already um which isn't to say that this is the right answer for you yeah i just i'm not sure if i um yeah i'm not i'm not sure if i feel like it right now because remember too the issues that i switch phones all the time i can't have like it be a hassle every time I go to do something on hardware reviewer Linus,
25:40Linus Sebastian:it might not be like,
25:42Luke Lafreniere:I've got, I've got at least, I still haven't done the fold seven because I've been putting it off because I've been kind of forcing myself to wade through this sort of graphene OS thing. And I, I think, I think this is it. What?
26:01Linus Sebastian:I think this is it. You think what's it? This is it. This. Oh, is this your iPhone sets? Sorry, what are you doing? Oh, you're popping your SIM out. I've had the SIM in the Graphene OS phone.
26:15Luke Lafreniere:I think this is it. And to be clear, we'll give it a fair shake. Jordan's going to be working on the video with me, so it'll be partly like my notes.
26:24Linus Sebastian:And just because, like he already said, I'm just going to reiterate here, just because it might not be for Linus has nothing to do with it being for you or not. Yep. He is a very unique user of phones. It is extremely probable that his style is not yours.
26:40Luke Lafreniere:And there are things that I enjoyed about it a lot. I just think it's not right for me at this moment.
26:49Linus Sebastian:Have you thought about trying Lineage OS as well? Because I was thinking it could be interesting to look at your Note 9 with Lineage OS or something.
26:58Luke Lafreniere:I wouldn't mind it. I wouldn't mind giving it a shot. I think that for me, the well-maintained with tens of millions install base Androids already have a lot of problems with interoperability. And the issue with Android generally is not the everyday stuff. It's the edge cases. and it's the infinite customizability is sort of both its greatest strength and its greatest weakness like one of the things that irritated me about my Graphene OS Pixel 9a not to be confused with my other Pixel 9a is screenshot sharing just kind of blows and I could go find a third party tool for that but like as it is right now right?
27:53Luke Lafreniere:What's your flow for screenshot sharing? When I grab a screenshot okay so I go to share and then okay i go to edit i'm just a boomer and then i okay so now i can crop right so i'm in the interface where i can like crop and do stuff where the f**k is my share button there's no share button in this interface so on my pixel that is running uh pixel os i take my screenshot i go to share and then if I want to edit it, I can like edit and then I can share it immediately because that was what I intended to do. So, so they, there was more consideration for the user intent and I can, I can obviously save and then go share this, but it's an unnecessary extra step.
28:43Luke Lafreniere:And why? How about I just don't? Uh, the other thing is that, um, you can share it and then it just like won't save to your gallery because i don't want this forever or i can save it and share it i have the option okay as part of that flow on here okay um and so yeah the option is cool any of this stuff can be fixed but i personally as someone who takes a lot of screenshots does a lot of quick markup and shares things with a lot of people i really appreciate quick features for cropping marking up Like one thing that drives me crazy on the pixel is that the default text color or the default color of scribbles is blue and there doesn't appear to be an obvious way to change it.
29:27Luke Lafreniere:Why would the default be blue? Markup, like whatever the word I'm looking for, standard markup color is red. So it should probably just be red. You're probably just trying to be trendy and cool or something. I don't know. I don't know what you're trying to accomplish here, but maybe and maybe there is a way to change the default. But I would really rather that it was red as my default markup color. And so strong markup tools and then easy access to like a really good sharing menu that's really smart about who it recommends to me.
30:03Linus Sebastian:It means a lot to me. I don't use that menu because I find that even on proper Android, it is so dumb.
30:10Luke Lafreniere:Yeah, it's really obtuse.
30:11Linus Sebastian:Yeah. I find it a lot faster to not use that menu.
30:15Luke Lafreniere:Probably 60 % of the time I send the screenshot to anyone. It's to Yvonne in WhatsApp. But often she will fall off the most recent. Which is crazy. Which is, it seems like the kind of thing that Google could more usefully apply AI to. Who am I more likely to be sending this to? Some person that I have texted once in the last six months or my wife who I often share things to. Anyway, we've gotten way off the rails here. let's talk about airpods pro threes these make me sad and i'll explain why after we go through it up to two times active noise cancelling performance now i don't know exactly what that means because you got to remember that like decibels are are not a linear measure and our our perceived uh loudness of sounds is highly contextual depending on what else is going on around us.
31:12Luke Lafreniere:So what 2X means, I don't know. But what I do know is that the performance, comfort, and especially the natural soundingness of the AirPods Pro 2s is already awesome. And if these are that but more better, I am stoked. In other news, the earphones are even smaller, which as someone who sleeps with my AirPods Pro 2s in every night, I actually own two pairs because I've been waking up in the middle of the night so much that I'll like put in my ones that are charged now. Oh, did I mention that they're claiming two more hours of battery? So that'll be nice because it means it's more likely that I will get a longer uninterrupted sleep.
31:59Luke Lafreniere:I have a weird take, but... Oh, you use AirPods 4s.
32:04Linus Sebastian:Yeah. Okay. but like the ones without the ear insert. Yeah, that's the AirPods 4s. Sure, yeah. I was making it clear to people that might not know the model differentiation. Without the silicone tips. Yeah. Yeah. These are shorter now than the 3s were or some other previous version. Yeah, the stems. I do this. You do what? When I don't currently want them in my ear. That is insane. This was a lot easier to do when they were longer. That is actually unhinged. I can stash them here. Literally nobody agrees with you. They'll legitimately stay there.
32:37Luke Lafreniere:They love siding with you instead of me, but this is a step too far. They will stay there, no problem. Our worksman says, Luke is not basted. I think he is basted, because he's a turkey. I'm really surprised how negative people react to that. Dude, that is turkey behavior. Why? This is one of those things where if I have to explain it, you're not capable of understanding it. I don't get it though why
33:04Linus Sebastian:explain it explain it anyways try it
33:07Luke Lafreniere:okay the risk of loss is super high I didn't say that you will lose it
33:12Linus Sebastian:I said the risk of loss I can't do it with these but with the ones that had the longer stem I could like lay down and do bench presses with them stashed there and they would stay no matter what
33:23Luke Lafreniere:you're an actual sociopath
33:26Linus Sebastian:that's the only explanation I've never lost one that way and I've done it so much Kifrig says Someone just tried and said wow it actually stays on quite well
33:36Luke Lafreniere:Yeah it does Kifrig said that's not so bad Jade De Duval says That's actually insane So you know what At the very least I can say That's a polarizing choice Let's get back to Let's get back to the AirPods Pro 3
33:53Linus Sebastian:Luke makes me sick
33:57Luke Lafreniere:Everyone's gonna unsubscribe
33:58Linus Sebastian:Are there any internal transfers for positions available right now you know i do this i've done this in the gym with you
34:09Luke Lafreniere:um so okay in other news the airpods pro threes are getting a new fifth size of ear tip a double xs which is going to be great for kids so these are like guys okay hold on oh my god we're coming
34:24Linus Sebastian:back to this that's not how i like wear them that's how i stash them if i'm not currently using them i feel like you're if i need to take it out of my ear to listen to someone i feel like
34:32Luke Lafreniere:you're trapped in the me arguing with people about american cheese maybe okay sure sure sure okay one person is going to say something like that and then you're going to respond to it and then everyone else is going to hear only where i them and they're going to run with it and then you're going to be stuck in this loop where all you ever said was that not american cheese regular cheese is perfectly meltable and people are gonna run in completely cheese guy completely different directions right right right and think that you hate hot dogs so yeah let's just let's move on from this topic this will be great for kids because like on a plane or whatever um when when you that's the that's i'm trying to think we never did in restaurants we've only occasionally did it in the car i think that's like the ipad parenting time for me is on the plane we'll just give the kids the phone give them the ipad give them the headphones there's three of them right so they sit in their own row we're not even there sure and we just have a flight by ourselves and our kids they just watch movies anyways so so yeah that's gonna be that's gonna be great because i've got i've got little girls and they have little ears and uh smaller ear tips is gonna to be awesome uh not that i'm not that i'm gonna get my kids the new ones anyways they're gonna get my hand me downs so whatever but um they've got a new ultra low noise microphone apparently uh multi-port acoustic architecture so i does that mean they have multiple drivers i'm actually not sure i haven't looked into them that much yet i'm not working on my video yet because we don't get early access to apple hardware uh new h2 chip heart rates are actually i don't think that's new i think that's the same one heart rate sensing though so for people who work out this could be useful, I guess, if you don't want to wear a watch.
36:18Linus Sebastian:I guess there's some moves you wouldn't want to watch on for, right? For sure. I would... I like this, actually. I think that's very cool. This is one of the things that, like, I was like, I'm sad about this. I'm sad about this because I can't get the pros. Right, because he doesn't like silicone inserts. Yeah, they just squish themselves out of my ears because I have weird ear canals. But, yeah, that's actually a really cool feature. Not that I necessarily think you're going to go around, like um some people were talking about how this is better because you can do it without your phone on you i think this is specifically i saw comments about that i was genuinely confused i think this is specifically a so that you don't have to have your watch on you um and i would prefer to wear like as few accessories as possible when i'm out doing stuff so it being able to be measured
37:04Luke Lafreniere:through your your earbuds is pretty neat um most importantly they are ip57 now so they're like super sweat-proof and water-resistant and are the same price. So Apple seems to be kind of just sucking it up on their higher costs in order to capture some market share right now, which feels like an uncharacteristically aggressive Apple. Like they're almost coming across a little, still in the most Apple way possible, but they're coming across a little scrappy here, which I kind of like. i i think it's pretty cool do we uh do we expect them to put a removable battery in them anytime soon no nope go f**k yourself they're still apple but the airpods pro 3s those were in immediate
37:57Linus Sebastian:order for me when i saw them some people are saying that the new ear tips are are foam and silicone and that they have uh some new yeah thing maybe i don't know maybe i'll give it a shot but probably not i can give it a shot i don't think it's going to work for you if there's any kind
38:13Luke Lafreniere:of silicone slippage yep i agree uh there's some new watches who cares um let's move on to a new topic i mean does anyone love the apple watch it apple watch feels more like just a complete it's like a mini the minivan of apple products it's like i got the apple watch because i have everything else i need notifications when my hands are dirty or like i i got it from my grandpa because he might slip and fall um it just it just feels like uh okay people in chat they
38:48Linus Sebastian:love their apple watch their the fitness stuff is that yeah someone said fitness slash outdoors people the fitness stuff is actually wild i've just the apple watch is like the king of that
38:57Luke Lafreniere:i gave up completely when my apple watch series something or other congratulated me for my excellent bike ride while i was driving down the highway i was just like well this is just obviously you're biking really fast yeah biking really fast and my heart rate is a very relaxed resting heart rate like can we like i just i would rather personally i would rather have no data than have bad data that i can't trust it's i just don't care but i can't care about it you can't
39:26Linus Sebastian:really trust any of them but it's heart rate stuff the last time i looked into it which was a very long time ago was better than like everybody's and by a long shot which is interesting okay maybe it's worth giving another shot I really wish we were able to make that that video way back in the day do you remember that project I was trying to do with UBC
39:47Luke Lafreniere:I think we've talked about it on my show before they had like a lab where we could hook up all the real probes and then wear all the fitness trackers and see which ones were the most accurate but then for whatever reason they weren't able to do it so it didn't happen but i'd love to revisit the concept i think others have done it since then though probably so i don't think it would be a novel thing yeah um okay what are we supposed to be doing now you want to you want to
40:15Linus Sebastian:pick a topic it says topic two sure we can do this corsair one or we can jump down into Do... Oh, the Nintendo one might take a bit.
40:27Luke Lafreniere:Do we have the Anthropic settlement in here? Oh, we didn't... No, we don't have that this week, guys. Sorry, but that's interesting. Go look it up on your own, I guess.
40:36Linus Sebastian:The AI news is fast, heavy, and always very similar. I don't think it's good to cover every single time.
40:45Luke Lafreniere:I don't know if this one's that similar. I don't know what this one is. No, this one's kind of a big deal. Oh, okay. Yeah, Anthropic, fine. We'll just go through it now. Anthropic agreed to pay$1.5 billion to settle claims that it downloaded pirated books to train its AI systems. And this has... Who are they paying the money to? Oh, wait, that was eight days ago. And then three days ago from Reuters, a federal judge in San Francisco has declined for now to approve the settlement that was announced Friday. So stuff's going down. and my understanding is that because they settled and it never went to trial this wouldn't be a precedent and so the matter is still unresolved of like copying copyrighted works to train your AIs and if you should you know probably have your company just shut down because it was built on other people's copyrighted works or maybe what you're doing is so transformative and terribly important that maybe we just should not care about copyright in this case uh those are kind of the two the two camps on either end and it is unresolved which will be the law of the land
42:00Linus Sebastian:uh for the time being so yeah because i can i can understand the argument of like national security stuff i don't know if like it's important for national security that it reads like werewolf smut
42:17Luke Lafreniere:I don't know hold on one sec float plane chat y 'all need to calm down or I'm gonna start issuing timeouts to all of y 'all oh what's going on don't worry about it alright um okay uh should we maybe do the Corsair loss class action loss yeah because I I am pretty peeved about this there's a Canadian one for bread by the way uh okay but that one I'm not upset about so oh man this is dude i am like oh i hate this okay so here corsair gaming had to pay five and a half million dollars to settle a claim shut up to settle a claim of effectively false advertising on their ddr4 and ddr5 memory products plaintiffs there's a bit of editorialization here um blood-sucking lawyer leeches, claimed that consumers reasonably believe that Corsair memory will run at the advertised speeds, but in reality, the memory does not and cannot run at these advertised speeds out of the box.
43:27Luke Lafreniere:Trying to get Corsair memory to run at the advertised speed requires altering your computer's firmware to attempt to make the memory run at higher than standard speeds. This is known as overclocking, and overclocking often does not work. There is substantial risk that attempts to overclock will fail. All of which is technically true, but in this case, I don't actually think it's the best kind of true. Also from the complaint, plaintiff and class members were injured as a direct and proximate result of Corsair's conduct because A. They would not have purchased Corsair high-speed memory if they had known that Corsair would breach its warranty, and B, they overpaid for high-speed memory products because they are sold at a price premium due to Corsair's false warranty.
44:14Luke Lafreniere:And in this case, warranty doesn't mean that they fix it if it's broken. They mean they warrant that it will operate the way that it says on the box. The complaint states numerous times that consumers expect those speeds out of the box. But this appears to me, even though this is a settlement and therefore not like an established precedent, this seems to me to open up an entire can of worms and make it pretty difficult to advertise a lot of things that require some technical know-how in order to get the sort of the advertised. result like am i am i missing something here like do you guys think i'm off base here because basically every memory manufacturer is now at risk of either not being able to advertise what the sort of the overclocked capability because the ram itself is capable of the speeds that much is that much is certain and i you know from my point of view they label xmp or docp or expo profiles or whatever else pretty clearly i also think that it's really weird to go after like
45:37Linus Sebastian:corsair for this very specifically when it's everybody if you're buying corsair though
45:42Luke Lafreniere:you know i i would i would think at the very least you read an article once i mean i may maybe maybe this is one of those things where i often i'm often lecturing the audience about don't assume sort of the knowledge of even people who who participate in this in this hobby but like
46:00Linus Sebastian:good lord avon fox said in industrial applications sorry in industrial automation things are sold with actual and theoretical capability ratings that's kind of neat or or showing like a default
46:17Luke Lafreniere:and a potential yeah i mean but i don't i i kind of agree with you that i don't think this should
46:24Linus Sebastian:have been targeted at Corsair specifically.
46:26Luke Lafreniere:But like, okay, so if ASUS has a 165 hertz... Okay, no, let's go bleeding edge. If ASUS has a 480 hertz monitor, how much do they have to disclaim?
46:40Linus Sebastian:That's tricky, yeah.
46:41Luke Lafreniere:How much do they have to disclaim? That you're gonna need a GPU and a cable that will actually be able to run it that... Like, you're putting together a computer piecemeal.
46:52Linus Sebastian:It feels like the Red Bull doesn't
46:52Luke Lafreniere:actually give you wings thing i think there's a bit of an expectation that if you are buying a a constituent component of something that you are doing so with some expectation that you will acquire the knowledge to install and operate it i i'm sorry man i don't like this i at this level
47:13Linus Sebastian:with the explanation that i have heard so far i don't like it either um i wouldn't mind if there was maybe some minor changes to packaging like it's a bit of a meme like going to your friend's house and freaking out that his monitor still 60 hertz is like a thing uh so if there was like a little bit better explanation of of this type of stuff finding people's rams at default speeds is very common as well this is true um like if there was a little bit more explicit communication that could be cool but i don't i don't necessarily know that it was worth this and i don't think it makes any sense to target just corsair other
47:50Luke Lafreniere:manufacturers apparently do use terminology like up to to describe the frequencies that their memory kits will run at um but i mean this seems to be corsair has also denied any wrongdoing here and this seems to be a yet another case where the defendant settles knowing that the settlement will be less than the cost of litigating it or the potential negative publicity if they are found guilty. I think this is lame still. And I think that while I mean you know, frankly I don't have a ton of sympathy for publicly traded corporations that probably have plenty of money or whatever. In general Corsair's kind of been bros.
48:35Luke Lafreniere:You know? I think they've overall stood behind their products and been pretty chill. Their products can be expensive sometimes, but I don't think that Corsair has been particularly evil. So if there was someone that was going to kind of get picked on, I would much rather it be someone that's been kind of a bastard at some point or another. And I just don't think that Corsair has earned a five and a half million dollar hit to their pocketbook for frankly something that people could have looked up on wikipedia before they went and installed um a component product and something i don't like it dan what's next i'm not sure because like i've got an extra
49:29Linus Sebastian:sponsors thing that i'm supposed to throw somewhere and i don't know where to put it well they didn't wait this wasn't planned out i don't know i thought it was planned out dude
49:37Luke Lafreniere:his WAN show. I haven't figured it out yet. It's a good point. It's the red-headed stepchild of Linus Media Group Media Properties. Like, it's... That's already...
49:45Linus Sebastian:I've been doing other things. Planning errands already.
49:47Luke Lafreniere:I wasn't even sure if you're gonna make it tonight. Oh, yeah. How close were you? Dude. Like, did you just walk on the set before I got here? Like, five, ten minutes.
49:58Linus Sebastian:Oh, yeah.
49:59Luke Lafreniere:Oh, wow.
49:59Linus Sebastian:Also, there was... The street could have been broken today? I should maybe tell this story right now. Dude, you could have been on a plane.
50:05Luke Lafreniere:No, you're gonna tell it after we do... one of the sponsors, I guess. Two sponsors. Okay, the show's brought to you by ProtonMail. Less sponsors than planes. They can't help you if you accidentally send your beloved cat pictures to a client once the email is opened, but they do have a ton of privacy and security features. We're talking tracker blocking, password protection, link click confirmation, advanced phishing protection, and more. And that's all in support of one of their main features, end-to-end encryption that is so secure that even Proton can't see what you're sending. So yeah, at least Mrs.
50:38Luke Lafreniere:Butterworth's identity is only kind of leaked. Is that a bunny cat? Oh, I thought it was an AI thing. I didn't look that closely at it. I was like, good Lord. Science has gone too far. Anyway, ProtonMail is part of Proton's larger suite of products, all focused on privacy and keeping your data visible only where you want it to be. So take the steps to lock down your emails by clicking our link in the video description to try ProtonMail for free or to get 38 % off their paid plans. The show is also brought to you by Vessi. 52:06Luke Lafreniere:Well, that's... Luke has to talk about his thing. Luke has to talk about his thing. Oh, well, then why'd you put the sign there? You should put a sign that says Luke talk about his thing. I don't have any more card paper. Okay. We'd have no budget for that. You guys make me sound like such a cheap c***. Honestly, though. I'm glad he said it.
52:32Luke Lafreniere:I mean, no, you're not we love you. You're so reasonable. When was the last time I turned down a purchase request? Name it. Maybe I was lying to cover my laziness. I literally buy fire trucks for the memes. Oh, hold on. Never mind. I take it all back. I have a giant stack right here.
52:58Luke Lafreniere:Sorry, we lost the budget to have a producer town right now um okay do i talk about the trip sure uh did you fall yeah no actually never and
53:10Linus Sebastian:i climbed a mountain so nice uh nice yeah no i was i was in sofia bulgaria right oh that's the
53:18Luke Lafreniere:kind of mountain you were climbing oh no he wasn't he's loyal yeah or not you know what whatever happens whatever happens with full consent from all parties i don't judge that would still be sure but yeah loyal and faithful i guess are not quite the same thing correct
53:42Linus Sebastian:would it still be faithful if it was like uh yes okay no i think faithful has a connotation of
53:50Luke Lafreniere:Religious? No, no, no, no, no. I think, well, faithful has a connotation of 2-1. From my point of view. I was thinking faithful to wishes and understandings.
54:02Linus Sebastian:Yeah, exactly. And loyal is just like, nah, there's like 15 other people. Completely regardless. And no, none of that happened anyways. Look, I wouldn't judge. I wouldn't judge. That's all. That's all I'm saying. I was there. Yeah. Local time. So Luke was in Sofia. yes yes local time for them uh i left at i think it was 5 p.m 5 p.m okay so this is in belgium hungary where was it again bulgaria bulgaria right and it i had a i had a pretty tight connection but it would be fine yeah theoretically as long as nothing got delayed i would be landing back in munich yeah and then taking a train overnight up to berlin and then flying back to vancouver through a connection.
54:50Linus Sebastian:Vancouver? I hardly know her. My God.
54:56Linus Sebastian:It was not Wiz Air. It was Lufthansa. Anyways, because of course it needed to be a fairly tight connection to the train, the flight got delayed because of course it did. It was only delayed by 25 minutes. I still could make it. Yeah. It was going to be close.
55:16Luke Lafreniere:Yeah. and it was those can be the worst ones sometimes though because then they don't proactively
55:21Linus Sebastian:reschedule you oh no the plane and the and the train were booked separately so they didn't care at all nice um because of course i'd even ask because there's no way they're going to care um so my whole thing like as we're landing is like okay it's close we can definitely make it i know the train station is extremely easy to navigate so once i get to the train station from the airport. No problem. Not an issue. I can have like two minutes and I can run all the way to the train and get on the train. It's no problem. You can do it. But I needed, I had check luggage. So I needed the check luggage to come off like pretty quick.
56:00Linus Sebastian:Oh no. No. Why does it always last when you're in a hurry? Guess how long. Guess how long it took just from when we landed to my bag, which by the way was in the first three bags to come off. Guess how long it took for my bag to come out from when the plane landed you realize the only solution is gamer jet 55 minutes what it's the longest i've literally ever had to wait when there wasn't some type of like accident um there was there was genuinely like hundreds of people waiting in the baggage area for two carousels i have no idea what was happening i don't know if they were like short-staffed that day or something but it took forever it was crazy so i definitely missed my train i had like pre-booked the heck out of my ticket because you save a ton of money that way yeah um and i had a direct likes saving
56:53Luke Lafreniere:money it's great i had it all perfectly lined up it's actually i think what gets him off a little
56:59Linus Sebastian:bit yeah a little bit uh so i had a direct direct train too so i knew i could get a decent sleep yeah on the train um oh no so not only did i have to get a indirect train so i had to get a transfer but also i had to book now last minute so i had to pay expensive train prices um so i i couldn't like sleep properly so anyways so far we are one uber one flight in end up figuring out that i can't take my nice one train now i have to take two trains to Berlin. So, uh, I get to the train station. I'm like, okay, this train is leaving in, in like, you know, in 45 minutes, it's going to take me half an hour to get to the train station.
57:45Linus Sebastian:I can make this new train now. It'll be fine. I get there. Okay. The train's delayed by like 15 minutes. That's fine though. Okay. The train's delayed by like half an hour. That's fine. Now get on the train. Oh, while the train is rolling for some reason, it gains another half an hour of delay so it gets to the next train station an hour late i'm all worried because i'm like i'm gonna miss the next train i had an hour to get i had an hour at the next train station to transfer and now i have like four minutes or something and i'm like oh my god if it's in a weird spot i'm gonna miss my next train nope not a problem because the next train got delayed by an hour what is happening what is up with german german transportation i heard this as like a meme before I went there everything's just delayed all the time as far as I can tell while I was standing in the train station getting off my train that was delayed for an hour waiting for another train that was delayed for an hour I heard other trains announcing that they were delayed like crazy oddly enough the trains were extremely comfortable very nice right just never there on time right anyway so that train gets delayed for an hour so then I'm waiting for it anyways despite thinking that I was going to miss it.
58:57Linus Sebastian:Get into Berlin, take another train to get me from the like main train station in Berlin to the airport. Yeah. And then that flight takes me to Frankfurt and then that flight takes me to Vancouver. Good lord. And then I get picked up from the airport by Emma and brought here. So it was three cars, three trains, three planes and like 30 plus hours and I got to Wancho on time. By 10 minutes. By 10 minutes. Nice.
59:25Luke Lafreniere:Did I ever tell you about how I almost got stuck in LA when we went down there to collab with Kyle? I don't think so. Canada, like didn't have enough air traffic controllers. Whoa. So a bunch of flights into IVR were delayed. Whoa. So my flight was canceled. And then I was, I like immediately went to the Air Canada desk where they told me there's nothing we can do. you can have a flight tomorrow which i said was not good enough because my daughters were having seven teeth out the next morning between the two of them and they were super stressed i promised i'd be there um so they said okay well i don't know whatever you can call the phone lines because they can do more than we can so i call the phone line they tell me yeah i've got a flight for you i go oh my god thank god okay uh vance so the executive assistant here uh don't bother booking me that WestJet flight that you found.
1:00:21Luke Lafreniere:Air Canada has a flight for me. Then she goes, oh yeah, can you depart from this airport? I'm like, bro, I just told you I'm at LAX. That is literally three hours from here in LA traffic right now. And it's 45 minutes until the flight. How could you possibly think that I could make it? Okay, Vance, book it. Vance goes, oh yeah, by the way, it went up like$400 because everyone is rebooking. It's like going up by the minute. I'm like, oh my God, book it. And so he books it. I spend$1 ,200 on a plane ticket from LA to Vancouver. And then the Air Canada rep goes, actually, I've got one for you. And instead of being a connecting one through like Edmonton or something, it's a direct flight, but it's like later in the day.
1:01:04Luke Lafreniere:Then that flight gets delayed. So I'm sitting here at the airport. the one that glenn or one of our shooters got booked for um was canceled again in the in the like mid-afternoon and then my evening one left an hour late but ultimately i like did get here i surprised yvonne by being an intruder in our house and coming into the bedroom i told her i
1:01:25Linus Sebastian:wasn't going to make it home that night so you just showed up and i just showed up oh my god yeah i just my flight's to germany for this trip yeah um i was talking to sammy about it because i I got my two tickets and my, my second one. So once we landed in, uh, man, I don't even remember where our first landing was, but once we landed there, I didn't have a seat on the second plane. Oh my God.
1:01:51Luke Lafreniere:Oh, right. I almost,
1:01:53Linus Sebastian:they overbooked.
1:01:53Luke Lafreniere:I almost didn't get onto the flight. So because she, she sent me my booking confirmation by email. So I thought I had a ticket. So when I got to the counter, I didn't tell the best part of the story. when I got to the counter, they, like, I didn't have a seat. Yeah. Because I never checked in because I was already there at the airport and I just, I thought that my booking confirmation was a ticket. I didn't understand the difference. I'd never done that before. And so I, like, showed them my booking confirmation. It had a barcode on it and everything. I don't know that I would have thought differently.
1:02:23Luke Lafreniere:They let me through security with it. Yeah, I don't know that I would have thought differently. Even though I, like, didn't have a ticket. So there was one more middle seat and they were able to put me in. The first lady at the counter to get on the plane. I'd been at the airport for like nine and a half hours or 10 hours by this point. The first one was like, well, you don't have a ticket. And I was like, well, do you mean I don't have a ticket? I'm standing here at the gate, aren't I? How did I get here? But then I realized, no, they never actually scanned my ticket. They scanned my passport and they looked at what I had, but they never actually scanned my ticket.
1:02:57Luke Lafreniere:So I was never checked in. That's wild. and then the second one was like move and like checked for me and was like okay no i got one here's your ticket and i was like thank you this actually means the world pretty great i dude i actually kind of hate traveling yeah like that was so stressful i like traveling i actually really do
1:03:18Linus Sebastian:i don't like um Um, I really, really hated rebooking those train tickets. That pissed me off. Needing to pay last minute prices. WestJet wouldn't refund it.
1:03:35Luke Lafreniere:They have a zero exceptions within 24 hours, I think it is. No refunds, even if you just booked it five minutes ago. They're like, no. I was like, bro, if you unbook it now, you could literally just sell it to someone else who also desperately needs to get home.
1:03:49Linus Sebastian:They'll do that anyways. F***ers. they'll just overbook their plane um yeah the the the thing that saved me getting to berlin twelve hundred dollars was that i checked in so early and for some reason they just didn't assign me a seat but i had checked in really early so that when it came down to like the seat lottery thing i just automatically won because i had checked in first by like a lot did i ever tell you how i almost missed my play when i went to uh edinburgh no i i man i when i went to see joseph
1:04:20Luke Lafreniere:yeah yeah oh yeah we almost missed our plane we flew into heathrow and then our plan was to have a connecting flight to edinburgh but our connecting flight was canceled and the new flight they assigned us was going to be there too late to see the play oh i was only there to see joseph and the amazing technicolor dreamcoat with donny osmond as the pharaoh and if i wasn't going to see that play then why was i even there so we so we are standing there in the airport like can you rebook us and I'm like, no, no, we got nothing. I'm like, okay. Okay, so what are our other options? We looked into chartering a private plane.
1:04:57Because like, I literally was only...
1:04:59Luke Lafreniere:You already flew across the world. I was only in Europe. And I didn't even actually know this at the time, but it was the last performance. So it was like... I thought you did know that. I didn't know that before we sat down and they said this is the last performance. So I wouldn't even... I could have even like not known, thinking I could go a day later. Anyway, we actually... So it turns out charging is really expensive in case you were wondering. It's very expensive. I remember from that one Scrapyard Wars. So we found a train. Oh, yeah. Okay. And we were like, okay, we can do the train, which is only like a couple hundred dollars compared to thousands and thousands and thousands of dollars for the plane.
1:05:41Luke Lafreniere:which what was what was incredible though was dude i gotta say like the the the airplane charter business damn do they ever have like customer service figured out i emailed i was like damn it they only have an email they don't have a phone line i emailed they emailed me back in like three minutes and they were like here's our phone number let's talk and they were like yeah we can have you we can have you taken off within like the next 90 minutes or something like that i was like you just like found one that's nearby and yeah we got you i was like wow that's crazy anyway um so yeah the plane so the train uh ended up running like two hours and five minutes late which it turns out means you get your fare for free so my story worked out so maybe that's why
1:06:22Linus Sebastian:i ultimately didn't tell the story some that makes sense somebody in full plane chat pointed out in germany if your train is 20 minutes late your ticket becomes a flex ticket so you take any train of your choosing that is cool the problem for me was the nice pre-booked train that i had was the one that wasn't late. The plane was late. So I didn't make that train. And then I had to book other trains and those ones were late, but I had to take them anyways. It didn't matter if I took them later. If I didn't take those specific trains, I would not make it to Berlin on time to take my flight out. A couple of people also said, why didn't you just drive?
1:06:57Linus Sebastian:I did look into that. Dimitri actually suggested that I just drive. Really? But I went and looked at renting a car and the rental car place had a 1.1 or 1.2 star rating and like all of the reviews were about how they tried to scam them for damage and like, oh, I've been fighting a double charge for a car rental for a year was somebody's comment and I was just like, I'm gonna take the train.
1:07:26Luke Lafreniere:Yeah, Dimitri's reviews of Bulgaria in general.
1:07:29Linus Sebastian:No, no, no, this was Germany.
1:07:30Luke Lafreniere:Oh, this was Germany. Yeah. Oh, okay. Yeah. Because I know he had trouble getting review samples sent to him there and stuff. Oh. Stuff would just get like... Disappeared? You know, stuff would happen. I'm not going to say specifically because I don't remember the details, but he was just like, yeah, sometimes it could be a real challenge to get review samples sent there.
1:07:48Linus Sebastian:Yeah, I actually had...
1:07:52Linus Sebastian:I didn't take a lot of public transport in Bulgaria, but like the Bulgarian airport was completely fine in my experience. No direct planes from Bulgaria. well my flights i travel in a really whack way where i do a lot of my travel planning like once i'm already there so my flights to canada and back were out of berlin and then the easiest way for me to get to bulgaria at the time was through munich not berlin so when i'm saying i'm flying back to germany and then taking a train up to berlin i'm flying back to munich um yeah so it was actually like pretty far from berlin so there there i mean there probably was maybe not direct planes but easier ones but my my my flight was already through berlin and if i don't make that one that was the one that the company had booked for me so if i don't make that one i just have to pay for my own entire ticket myself because it would have been entirely my fault so like i'd rather not do that so i'm gonna try to make that one i wish i journaled more of my crazy travel stories because they're always like i took a bunch of photos of like i have some really funny ones
1:09:02Luke Lafreniere:oh where's my phone like the time that i was literally by like 10 seconds uh on time for my plane back from japan like like they looked at the supervisor because it was literally like the minute of the of the cutoff and he's like gives a nod but like it was bad and it was because I was like 42 cents short of the fare for my for my train into the airport and the lady like wouldn't let me go and I was like oh my god I don't care I don't have any cash I just I need to make my plane but it's Japan there ain't a lot of flexibility on that so I like this photo
1:09:43Linus Sebastian:because it's like it's supposed to show up it was my fault entirely it was only because
1:09:47Luke Lafreniere:I accidentally left all of my luggage on my previous train and I had to go to the lost and found. I had to catch a later train and I like picked the wrong one. I like picked the one that left earlier rather than the express one.
1:09:58Linus Sebastian:Anyway, I've done that before. Oh, yeah. So it's like hits. It's supposed to show up at like 13 past midnight. It's going to show up at 105. It is 108. Oh, my God. How does that work? Yeah, that's good math. That's German math. Yeah. I noticed a couple times that it's like the delayed time will be a time that we've already passed also we were rolling slow because we're like near the train station the guy said over the intercom we'll get there at 111 which is later than either of those times if you noticed and then 111 comes and goes and we're still rolling and it like blew my mind that we're within like slow rolling distance of a train station and they still can't get the time right like we ended up getting there like i think two or three minutes later than the guy on the intercom said despite being within like jogging distance of the station so here's my question i don't understand my question okay
1:11:02Luke Lafreniere:these guys are world renowned for watches is this like a tariff issue is there some kind of border control I don't know what it is I'm just asking questions
1:11:16Linus Sebastian:the trains in Germany were the most comfortable trains I've been on in my life especially the the last one that I took it had like leather seats like super nice okay and i was in like the cheap cheapest super saver fair area and they had leather like very nice leather seats nice and we're super late i don't get it german trains are banned by this way so so this is not part of the eu oh all right that's interesting uh okay dan what are we
1:11:52Luke Lafreniere:supposed to be doing oh do that yeah okay cool we have some weekend deals for you
1:12:05Luke Lafreniere:anyway uh still need that backpack upgrade for back to school well lucky you because we're offering a great deal on the commuter backpack if you add both a commuter backpack and a tech sack to your cart right now at lttstore.com. 1:13:18Luke Lafreniere:So the end cap set is... Precision end cap set right here. So it's a convex, concave, and then alternate color of the flat top, and it just pops onto the precision screwdriver if you prefer a different shape. So that is free with your order of either just the driver or the driver and the bit set. 1:14:54Linus Sebastian:is your favorite color concord purple dude i need to not everyone's saying so i just well
1:15:01Luke Lafreniere:Well, they shouldn't say the purple. They should go to this poll and then they should vote on it. It's on YouTube. So, Dan, if you want to drop them some links, people seem confused by the instructions. This is not voting. Right here, what you're looking at right now is not voting. This place. This is voting.
1:15:22Linus Sebastian:The flow plane people don't even know what that website is.
1:15:24Luke Lafreniere:I'm doing it. You're spamming too much and can't see it. They don't know what that website is because it doesn't work properly in Firefox. Yeah. So what use would they have for it? You're just sending it. Oh my goodness. My links, they do nothing. It really is amazing that they can even find their credit cards to pay for float plane, isn't it? I love you guys, but... Their mom takes care of it. You can't follow instructions sometimes. Yeah. Stop! Go there! Instruction unclear. Sausage stuck in the door hole. Wow. An unrelated cylindrical object. okay cool let's uh let's maybe do another here wait let me let me do a bit of an update so i got
1:16:07Linus Sebastian:linked to this by multiple people in the float plane chat uh crappy pcb and uh dark guy too both linked to this uh which is hilarious someone else in full plane chat said that apparently something it has to do with something about the the like german car lobby messing with public transport or something what who knows i don't know i don't know but i just thought this is funny i also wanted to talk about um actually wait no i think i'm supposed to talk about that later i'll save i'll save that topic for for another time okay i i think i got i think there's a pizza conspiracy going on but we can talk about it later a different pizza
1:16:56Luke Lafreniere:conspiracy yeah i was gonna say because what what talking different one is dr disrespect
1:17:01Linus Sebastian:very different nope nope nope nope okay so not that one yeah a much more serious one okay i'm kidding i'm kidding i'm kidding a lot less serious oh my god you're stressing me out
1:17:14Luke Lafreniere:you're stressing me out you're making me stressed but i think yeah i think i'm supposed to like
1:17:19Linus Sebastian:talk about it later or something for some reason yes i am okay cool anyways i think i am supposed
1:17:24Luke Lafreniere:to talk about how to send a merch message. If you guys want to interact with the show, the best way to do it is to send a merch message. These go to Producer Dan, who will put them down there or respond to them or curate them for me and Luke to respond to. All you need to do to send a merch message is add something, anything to your cart. Go ahead and fill out a merch message. Probably do it a little bit better than this. You can pick a color. That would be fine, though. You can do that. You can do that. It won't get curated for sure, but whatever. It'll show up on screen. Yeah, it will. So that's something.
1:17:56Luke Lafreniere:And then you go ahead and check out, and once you have paid for your order, your merch message will go to producer Dan, who will then do something along the lines of what he's about to do, which is maybe to read it for us. That's right. That's what I do. Very good. Hey, DLL question for Linus. Sometimes. Is there going to be a new winter jacket this year? Oh, hold on. I might have it in my car. What? So we'll do another one for Luke. Oh. Luke. Luke Luke I can do a topic if you need Frigge Frigge Frigge Ah, okay, this might work for you as well Sure We can ask Linus about the second half when he returns How do you feel about so many people having parasocial relationships with you and your subordinates?
1:18:49Luke Lafreniere:I know you more than you will ever know me Also, have you ever owned a pet rat or a mischief?
1:18:56Linus Sebastian:Or a mischief?
1:19:00Luke Lafreniere:Mischief, copy, paste, animal?
1:19:03Linus Sebastian:What is that? Is that just like any rodent?
1:19:09Luke Lafreniere:I don't know. A mouse?
1:19:12Linus Sebastian:Hamster. Hamster. Is that like a genus? No, I've never had any of those. I've had dogs and birds. I have not had a... Oh, and fish. I haven't had a super wide range of animals a group of rats is called a mischief wow learning not a king I guess thank you Wikipedia
1:19:36Linus Sebastian:Jesus f***ing Christ did you bleep those? f*** yeah I did okay it doesn't bleep on my end you can see the button man what was the question even again have you ever owned a mischief no but wasn't there one before that you are drunk uh linus yeah how do you feel about so many people having parasocial
1:20:01Luke Lafreniere:relationships with you yeah and your subordinates i know you more than you will ever know me also
1:20:07Linus Sebastian:have you ever owned a pet rat or as we now know a group of pet rats is called a mischief oh it's this i think it's weird that people think this is a new problem that's my hot take oh the parasocial relationships or the pet rats people only really talk about it now but like people were hyper obsessed with like princess diana the beatles oh yeah like like way hyper obsessed i would argue
1:20:32Luke Lafreniere:more than people are now i think the difference now is that the people that we have these parasocial relationships with seem so much more accessible and like real people than the old
1:20:46Linus Sebastian:celebrities were. Well, they can't, they actually can't afford the amount of separation that the old celebrities had.
1:20:51Luke Lafreniere:Well, yeah. Like I, the realistically, I'm not that, I'm not that hard to talk to. Like it's not that hard to like get my email address. I won't respond to you because, you know, I just get too many emails, especially every time I acknowledge how easy it is to find my email address. So there's no point. And if you do email me, especially at those times, I will certainly filter so that I block probably not only you, but the entire domain that you're emailing from if you work at a business or something like that. Because I just like I can't have people bothering me and wasting my time. But in terms of like how how accessible sort of Internet celebrities are, they're they're super accessible.
1:21:34Luke Lafreniere:And not only that, but they're they're accessible like emotionally because they have something in common with you other than that they make music you like to listen to. or they sit on a throne that you know has oppressed your people for hundreds of years
1:21:48Linus Sebastian:you know that sort of thing i've had someone come up to me and like apologize for having a parasocial relationship and then like jokingly mentioning some things that happened on wan as a reference for them having a parasocial relationship and i'm like man like i we make the content so that you watch it like yeah watching wan show is not being weird and parasocial yeah there's a difference between like knowing some stuff that happens on WAN show or like you know sometimes they reference like oh yeah but I know things that happened in your life like yeah because I talked about them on WAN show like that's okay this is fine like there's a difference between
1:22:24Luke Lafreniere:like watching the show that and walking up to me at the airport and sitting down next to me and just like uninvited when I'm clearly in the middle of something like talking to me without going away eventually to be clear as if you're friends walk up and grab a selfie for sure totally fine yeah totally fine happy to do that and but like that's the that's the key don't assume that we're friends yeah and that i'm like i'm with my family or whatever else and even if i'm with my family you know what grab a selfie so my new my new policy i have a new policy for that like i have a new system for that that actually makes it like pretty not disruptive so i'll be like i'll be like walking in a mall and i'm like with my family or i was gonna say friends no i'm with my family i don't have friends uh but you're a friend um but we don't walk around in the mall together no so i'm walking in the mall i'm with my family and um someone's like can i get a selfie i'll be like sure keep up oh i've done that i've done that for sure dude it's great it's actually fantastic because they get their selfie i am not separated
1:23:34Linus Sebastian:from my family and everyone's happy the selfies often end up looking pretty cool too yeah i don't know why just like on the roll is like pretty neat um i just want to say i had fun chatting with you briefly at defcon i always feel yeah i mean that was probably totally fine so that's a
1:23:52Luke Lafreniere:different context too though like if you walk up and you want to chat with me a little bit at like a whale land or ltx i was there on vacation oh okay that's different then but it was still totally fine i mean it's still you're at a you're at a con for sure i think you're kind of walking it you're yeah and i didn't mind at all i'm sure to be honest okay cool yeah um but yeah no and so so context is everything but anyway so back to the question the the parasocial relationships um i i think the the the the fact that the relationship forms over something we have in common makes it in some ways stronger and feel more but also not like like strong like bizarre like uh john hinckley or whatever like you know shooting reagan over you know what's her name in taxi driver but like but like almost like less strong like more natural because it just kind of happens over time from from extended exposure and like having common interests like i I don't know man I don't think I'll ever be used to it
1:25:01Linus Sebastian:Is the bottom line Oddly enough I think I kind of am It doesn't really bother me anymore
1:25:06Luke Lafreniere:Well I didn't say bother me
1:25:07Linus Sebastian:It never really bothered me It definitely bothered me
1:25:11Luke Lafreniere:It can be socially really useful sometimes Getting recognized in public Like made me deeply uncomfortable At the beginning Now I'm used to that But I wouldn't say but I think I'm not used to the one to many relationship and I don't think I can ever get used to it. I don't think we're wired for it. Sure.
1:25:34Linus Sebastian:Two funny interactions I had at PAX this year. One, somebody took a selfie with me and then like 10 minutes later walked by and was like oh by the way can you come back like right here in like two and a half hours to take a photo with my friend? And I was like no. And I think that was one of the only times I've ever like let the annoyance like really go into my response so i was like walking with my brother and like one of my high school friends and he like asked me to come back i was just like like what do you ask like not a chance like i'm sorry if you're watching but like no dude i no
1:26:12Luke Lafreniere:no way someone pulled something really similar with me once like like can i if i come back can I go get someone and come back and will you still be here? And I was like, no? I think I was at LTX and I was at a particular spot and I was like, no, I'm going to be all over the place. There's literally thousands of people here.
1:26:35Linus Sebastian:I don't think that's necessarily as bad.
1:26:37Luke Lafreniere:Well, it was, they didn't know
1:26:40Linus Sebastian:where their friend was. Oh, okay, that doesn't help.
1:26:43Luke Lafreniere:They didn't know how long I was going to be standing there.
1:26:45Linus Sebastian:Are you going to be around for like five, ten more minutes? No, it was like, I will be back at some indeterminate amount of time.
1:26:51Luke Lafreniere:Stay here. I'm like, bro, I can't do that.
1:26:54Linus Sebastian:There's no way. The other one, though, is where I'm saying that I actually find they're actually pretty often helpful. Very funny interaction. There was a YouTuber that I have enjoyed watching a fair amount at PAX who had a little booth and they were filming these five-minute podcast things, which I didn't really know what that was about. But it said, ask me about five-minute podcasts. um so i just walked up to the booth thing uh and was like hey love your stuff shook his hand and was like that's it i just wanted to say i like your stuff then and then i was like before i leave what's this five minute podcast thing he's like okay let's film one and i was like uh all right sure so we just i like just stood in front of the camera and filmed this like thing with them and he's like all right cool bye and then as i'm leaving two different people like said hi and wanted selfies and i was like that was the best timing ever because now he's like who the hell is this guy that's great and i hope it comes out at some point so i'd like to see it but i've had
1:27:55Luke Lafreniere:times when i'm at a meeting with a potential sponsor at a trade show and someone will come up to my table and ask to take a selfie and they're like huge huge it's amazing the timing can be so good especially in the early days it was amazing how one person walking up during the meeting meant so much more than 300 ,000 subscribers. Yep. Which is...
1:28:18Linus Sebastian:It's how palpable it is. Yeah. It was fantastic when dating.
1:28:26Linus Sebastian:It was wild when dating. Every time I went out, I was like, please. And then it would happen and it was so good.
1:28:39Linus Sebastian:you could at least pretend not to enjoy it that much it was great yeah okay fair enough it's great you got to play it off as if you're not like oh thank god it is what it is
1:28:53Luke Lafreniere:all right so fame and chicken yeah dude that should be the name of your memoir
1:29:06yeah did you ever have anyone think it was fake like you paid someone to do that no i don't think
1:29:12Linus Sebastian:so well okay none that said anything okay i mean maybe but like i don't think so okay so i'm ready
1:29:18Luke Lafreniere:to i'm ready to acknowledge the outerwear that i am wearing yeah because it's starting to yes activate so what's cool about this particular jacket is that it uses a thermochromic material it's not like the warmest layer ever it's kind of like a lightly puffy jacket that's meant to be kind of layered on um but it is and it is an outer layer um so it's kind of like a like a fall like a late fall early spring uh or like a layered up winter depending on your climate but what's cool about it is that if for whatever reason you find yourself indoors or somewhere warmer or there's a spot um oh wait yeah let's go this way or there's a spot on the jacket where it kind of folds in on itself it's color changing so cool so it ends up with this kind of kind of like flame like like kind of fiery sort of look to it that uh as soon as i saw the material i was like, okay, I don't know.
1:30:23Luke Lafreniere:I think it's really cool and obviously it invites playing with it because your skin temperature is enough to activate it. My hands are really cold. Do you have warm hands? Alright, hit me. Right there, buddy. How long does it take? Is that good? Yeah, it should be fine. Yeah, there it is. He's always such a warm boy.
1:30:49Linus Sebastian:i was gonna say yeah decent tactical choice to to like if you if you have a girlfriend and you want them to be give excuses to hug you all oh yeah yeah yeah you'd get the arm wrap around the back
1:31:03Luke Lafreniere:yep oh yeah a hundred percent yeah so it's it's one of those things that some people really like and some people will not but i saw the material and i was like okay i i i need us to do something with this so we did a jacket i think it's pretty cool yeah very cool um all right how expensive is
1:31:26Linus Sebastian:it i don't know all right well cool answer that question all right what are we supposed to be
1:31:32Luke Lafreniere:doing ah yes the real self-driving was the friends we made along the way um sources electrek.co tesla has changed the definition of full self-driving you see fsd um is not fully unsupervised autonomous driving go to sleep in the driver's seat wake up at your destination like we said it would be when we charged as much as$15 ,000 for it. Now it has a new definition. FSD now means an advanced driving system, regardless of the marketing name used, that is capable of performing transportation tasks that provide autonomous or similar functionality under specified driving conditions. the author opines that the current version of fsd which requires constant supervision by the driver could easily fit that description uh oh the automaker has updated their language on their website now selling only full self-driving supervised and not the previous full self-driving capability fsd so we actually have an image here from this is from electric full self-driving supervised eight thousand dollars i don't like that beginning in 2016 the company had claimed had claimed past tense now because they have clearly changed their messaging had claimed that all its vehicles in production would be capable of unsupervised self-driving.
1:33:17Luke Lafreniere:Since 2018, CEO Elon Musk has claimed that this year is the year only to reach the end of each year with the promise unfulfilled. Tesla previously confirmed that vehicles produced between 2016 and 2023 do not have the proper hardware to deliver the promised unsupervised self-driving. Their CEO has discussed upgrading the computers in these vehicles, but there doesn't appear to be even a concept of a plan for implementing this upgrade very cool i remember having an infuriating conversation with uh finance bro at a at a party once i know this story that basically boiled down to i cover tech for a living and tesla has a serious problem with their tech and uh the counter argument was lots of super smart people have invested so there's no way they won't deliver on this yeah and i i tried to i said well do you want to see the tweet where elon admitted that like the cars they've been selling for all these years can't do it didn't want to see it and i was told that i just didn't understand finance and that the like the the details of the tech didn't matter and i was like right but people invest in this company because of the the the tech right like that's what theoretically people i as far as i can tell tesla
1:34:48Linus Sebastian:is gone full meme stock at this point well almost the whole stock market has i wouldn't say almost
1:34:54Luke Lafreniere:all i'd say like there's a lot of high profile examples these days but not almost all but a lot
1:34:59Linus Sebastian:of the high profile examples is where a lot of the money in the stock market is sitting currently
1:35:03Luke Lafreniere:yeah um ginger nutted in float plane chat says here's ginger nutted yeah I like that I felt it was worth reading out a lot out loud um
1:35:21Luke Lafreniere:oh no that's not actually the tweet that I was referring to there was one where he far more explicitly admitted that um FSD whatever the hardware level was that was up until a couple years ago three i think uh was just never going to be capable of it um and it was already clear like way before that that it wouldn't be capable because they were already using both of what were supposed to be the redundant computers in order to achieve full level four or level five you have to have redundancy but they like didn't because they were using the whole thing already so people had known for ages that it was just never going to be able to do it it just took them a really long time to admit it um i just i i don't know man i people i i often get accused of being an elon hater um but what it really boils down to is i don't respect people who lie to me constantly over and over and over again and just expect me to keep believing them um because i feel that that shows disrespect to me and therefore i cannot respect that if you make a good faith effort to follow through on the things that you tell me, or if you have the self-awareness to apologize and make good, then that makes a big difference.
1:36:32Luke Lafreniere:But if you just lie over and over and over and over and over again, then I just, I don't, I don't respect that. I can't respect that. So there you go. It's, it's kind of, it's kind of that simple. I remember having a conversation with a family member about a particular politician. And I basically just went, well, you know, here's an example of a bald-faced lie. You know, why did they say that? It's demonstrably false. And he went, I don't know. And I went, well, yeah, I can tell you why. It's because he doesn't respect you. He doesn't think you are smart enough or detail-oriented enough or conscientious enough to care.
1:37:17Luke Lafreniere:and um and that's not respectful and that was uh that was kind of a turning point which was a very which was a major major relief and to be clear i intentionally kept that vague i think that could apply to pretty much any politician um there's just degrees of um of brazen untruthfulness
1:37:42Linus Sebastian:uh extremely off topic but i want to bring it up before i forget i saw jaden in chat and this reminded me. He sent me a message after last WAN show where he said, regarding WAN show discussion, it is possible to assign different icons to notifications, Android only, and WhatsApp already shows profile image and notifications. You mentioned having, I think it was different icons for channels. So we could do it Android only, apparently. I don't know. No, don't bother then.
1:38:13Luke Lafreniere:I think it'd be better to just have feature parity and wait for Apple to catch up. I mean, they eventually do.
1:38:18Linus Sebastian:Or maybe they just won't. I don't know. I hadn't noticed it before. He mentioned, I think he, oh wow, I already forgot. I just put it down. I am pretty tired from all the traveling. Yeah, WhatsApp already shows profile image. So WhatsApp already does it, but I don't use WhatsApp very much. So I didn't see it there. And not a lot of other apps that I use seem to use this feature. And I suspect it's because of just having identical apps on both platforms. but I don't know. So yeah, apparently that is a thing. I just, I think I don't know exactly how I worded it, but I think I said that I didn't think it was.
1:38:53Linus Sebastian:So apparently it is.
1:38:54Luke Lafreniere:What is the consequence going to be for this full self-driving false advertising? Is, are the regulators going to be empowered and are they going to have the stones to follow through? Is, Is it going to come down to individual owners to class action this? Like, how is this going to play out? Because I think you could make the argument that a substantial portion, like if Corsair had to pay five and a half million dollars because some people didn't have XMP on by default in their gaming computer, right? Like we're talking a hundred,$300 purchase, right? Of some DDR4 memory. Yeah. How much will Tesla owe when people figure out that the decade of cars they sold are not and will never be capable of fully autonomous driving as they were advertised to be?
1:39:53Linus Sebastian:Meanwhile, and this is going to be tough to see amongst all the ads, but there is a headline in the middle there.
1:40:00Luke Lafreniere:Did you hear about this? Yeah, so I think this is a really, honestly, I actually, okay, I'm going to have kind of a controversial take on this one. I think that this is, see, I have in the past attributed to 4D chess what actually turned out to be phenomenal stupidity. Right. So I hate making the same mistake more than once. however this one smells like a bit of 4d chest to me because the conditions for that pay package are that the company will have to reach a valuation that simply isn't going to happen optimus is already dead in the water and everybody knows it it says specifically that they have to ship like an incredible amount of optimus yeah they have they ship like 300 000 optimuses a month or something like what were the numbers get me get me the optimist numbers here so the optimist is their is their robot that like is already just a piece of dog compared to like unitry models for a few grand and that they think they're going to sell for 200 to 300 000 each like to who what are you even talking about i don't even think that article said i'm looking for another one optimist is dead in the water with what logic with the logic of the head of the program who just left and was like, peace.
1:41:24Luke Lafreniere:Optimus is dead in the water because they are so far behind. They can't figure out hands. They can't figure out the AI side. They can't figure out mobility. So many of the demos that you've seen have just been remote telepresence, effectively, like a human just operating it remotely. Guys, Optimus is smoke and mirrors. So yeah, here we go, here we go. uh one million robot deliveries uh in uh one million robo taxis and opera yeah like this stuff's not this stuff's not happening um so yeah so basically this one smells to me like it's just supposed to grab headlines with a giant big number and it's supposed to help pump the stock because oh well if they're gonna if if this pay package exists then they're There's this path to this.
1:42:21Luke Lafreniere:But, I mean, obviously none of that is happening. There's no way you could be on enough substances to think that you're going to sell that many of a product that literally you would have to have a 1 ,000 % tariff on it to make Optimus, at the price that they have sort of floated, you'd have to have a 1 ,000 % tariff on it to make it competitive with something that Unitree is shipping like right now.
1:42:45Linus Sebastian:there's i i do know that a counter argument is that this is what was said about his first pay
1:42:51Luke Lafreniere:package sure um but i do think that was when the company was um poised for immense growth and had a lot of positivity surrounding it show show me the immense growth that we're poised for i mean in the u.s sales are tanking in europe in the u.s the incentives are going away there was a robot
1:43:10Linus Sebastian:at IFA at a booth where it was a humanoid robot, except it had two like airplane cables hanging it from the ceiling because it couldn't stand on its own. And it was like leaning over, hanging off these cables and it was sorting laundry. But like one out of three times that it tried to grab a piece of clothing, it would just like fail. And all it was doing was like sorting colors and whites for washing. Uh, and it was so incredibly slow. And then it got like three quarters of the way through and I, it just could not grab them anymore. Cause I guess it was too far down and it couldn't like bend cause it was held by these cables.
1:43:53Linus Sebastian:So they had to re pour the clothes back into the middle one so that it could keep going. It was so brutal. The watch, it was so rough. Who was this? I don't remember the brand. It's in the, uh, the float plane walkthrough with Sammy and I, um, breakdown says I'd pay
1:44:08Luke Lafreniere:good money for a real laundry folding machine. You better believe it. Me too.
1:44:12Linus Sebastian:Oh, it wasn't even folding. It was just sorting. Oh, wow. It was just picking it up out of one basket and putting it into another. So actually useless then. It was really bad. Yeah.
1:44:20Luke Lafreniere:Nice.
1:44:22Linus Sebastian:Oh.
1:44:25Luke Lafreniere:Uh. I feel like this is something completely different. Uh, this is a cooking robot at IFA25 that appears to be doing basically nothing useful.
1:44:38Linus Sebastian:yeah no it wasn't a cooking one very cool um it's in the float we could like kind of show that bit
1:44:45Luke Lafreniere:maybe um um bring it up so circuit king 98 says llms uh not llm specifically but i think you mean ai will unlock the humanoid robot market it's so early people said the same thing about full self-driving eight years ago okay so there's a couple things we got to kind of um talk about out here the full self-driving comment yeah that's still not done so that's that's one critical thing um the other issue is that i'm not saying the humanoid robot market isn't coming i'm saying it's not coming at 200 to 300 000 a unit that's the problem it's absolutely humanoid robots are going to be enormous yeah it's going to be huge guarantee you it's going to be freaking huge huge The issue is that specifically Optimus is so far behind and way, way too expensive.
1:45:34Luke Lafreniere:That's the problem. I'm talking specifically about Optimus. Nothing that they've shown me gives me any optimicism about how that program is going to proceed. And I could be wrong. It's happened before. Optimus could end up being 10 times better than what's coming out of other robotics companies. I haven't even talked about Boston Dynamics at this point. Like Optimus is so far behind right now. And they could magically catch up. And that is a possibility. And if I'm wrong, I will say I was wrong. Optimus is the prime robot. I just, I don't see a path to it right now. That's all.
1:46:14Linus Sebastian:Okay. So this is from Luke and Sammy tour the IFA show floor. I'm not going to bother get Dan to get the audio going or anything but you can see here when he zooms in so this is a little bit blurry because we're like zoomed in over the crowd but you can see a hook here and then a wire that goes up and behind the play button there's another hook there we go you can see on both of his shoulders there's hooks and then wires going up he's being held up by the airplane cables to the ceiling so it can't stand on its own there's three baskets here on the bottom you can see the one in the middle has actually like a bunch of clothes in it and then one on each side the the basket on from our perspective the right is for like plain i would say you're probably closer to center my god from our perspective the right the the bat that basket is for plain whites and then the uh basket on the left is for colored fabrics oh my god the middle is the unsorted hamnetics says that's robot at Bernie's.
1:47:25Luke Lafreniere:Look how slow it is. Oh, man. What is the possible use of this? I mean, I get it. The point is to show progress. And then look, fail.
1:47:36Linus Sebastian:And try again. Wait, this is in real time? This is not slow-mo? This is in real time. It actually footage skipped there for a second. I think Sammy cut some of it out because it was so boring. Oh, yeah, and then this one, it has like a hard time getting it out of the basket. So it takes this whole time and then... Okay, it finally got it. Then it goes again. It's so rough. It takes forever. Oh, man.
1:48:03Linus Sebastian:The company is Neuro Robotics. Yeah, I don't know. And, you know, maybe they have something else that's good. I don't know. Whatever. It's just... That was, like, tough to watch. I would not have brought that to a show to show it off. Personally.
1:48:17Luke Lafreniere:I mean, it depends where you started. Maybe, maybe, you know, maybe six months ago, it couldn't pick up the clothes at all. Maybe this is progress.
1:48:25Linus Sebastian:Sure. And, you know, I'm not super informed on robotics right now. Maybe that is good for some reason. Like maybe it was doing something somehow that was good for some reason. And you wanted investors or something because IFA is a weird show. There's a really wide range. actually of yeah so there's your first time this is my first time um there was genuinely just like general public wanted to go see stuff for funsies people there there was people that were like definitely buying for like european stores that needed stock for things um so you know maybe there
1:49:07Luke Lafreniere:was investors there as well i don't know avon fox in floatplane chat says it's actually pretty astounding that it can adapt to something like fabric as a tech demo it's amazing as a product
1:49:16Linus Sebastian:it's obviously not yeah and let's see okay so fair enough and maybe they're looking for investors they're looking to hire people or whatever i don't know what the objective was i'm used to going to ces where they're trying to sell or get in the media right yeah so this might have actually been a different objective and i'm just not used to it so you know what i'm not trying to go after the company i just oof that's all as a product right now which it isn't in its defense forget efa more
1:49:43Luke Lafreniere:like oofa yeah oofa yeah have you seen some of the um some of the footage from the like robot the first robot olympics that they held in china no some of it's really impressive most of it's really funny um this is i don't think this is from the robot olympics but this is from like a robot Martial arts fight this one falls under funny
1:50:12Luke Lafreniere:This is from the independent There's so much more you guys are gonna have to go really funny you guys are gonna have to go check this out Yeah, they're also just like shadow boxing like 15 20 feet away from each other just before they actually Get close enough to I don't know maybe land a blow. I don't know if they ever actually do land any hits on each other. Anyway, it's cute.
1:50:41Luke Lafreniere:Oh, floatplane announcement. What's the floatplane announcement? Oh, okay. I moved it so you wouldn't yell at me. Well, then I couldn't find it, Dan. Did you ever think of that? Oh, wow. Oh, my God. We did a seven-hour director's commentary for Scrapyard Wars 10. It's with Games Master David as well as basically everyone except me and Luke. So that's Hoffman, the editor. I'm in like 10 minutes of it. They had me call in. Oh, are you in it? Oh, cool. They didn't ask me. You didn't blatantly cheat. What?
1:51:22Linus Sebastian:I didn't cheat. We didn't know. No, apparently we did. We thought we got permission for something and David thinks we did not. I'm glad we... What? I swear we did.
1:51:33Luke Lafreniere:What? Got permission for what?
1:51:35Linus Sebastian:Don't worry about it.
1:51:36Luke Lafreniere:No, I'm worried about it. If you want to know, you should watch the director's commentary. If you want to know, you've got to subscribe to Flo Plane and watch seven hours of video. What do you mean?
1:51:44Linus Sebastian:We lost. Spoilers, I guess.
1:51:48Luke Lafreniere:What do you... Well, hold on a second. I thought Linus knew. I didn't mean to open this worm can. I'm reading the comments.
1:51:59Linus Sebastian:I don't know if it's even in there.
1:52:01Luke Lafreniere:Usually the comments will tell me what was in the video. Control F. C-H-E-A.
1:52:10Linus Sebastian:The comments are about you cheating.
1:52:14Luke Lafreniere:Next time, Dan should be on Linus's team and do the same amount of cheating. So Dan knows the answer. Oh, no. We both know the answer. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, but... But I thought you were aware before this. Okay, Dan.
1:52:32Linus Sebastian:I mean, we talked to David about this. Talked to David about what? We super talked to David about it. But there must have been a miscommunication. If you talked to David about something, then you have to have the camera rolling. There must have been a miscommunication.
1:52:43Luke Lafreniere:I mean, you must have had your tentacle.
1:52:45Linus Sebastian:There was mic packs rolling.
1:52:46Luke Lafreniere:Okay, well then, where's the audio of you talking to David? I think it's in the commentary thing, maybe. No, I think it was found in the edit, and they just kind of brought it up later. I can't quite remember. I don't know.
1:52:58Linus Sebastian:Okay, so what did you guys do? You gotta watch the Fulprin exclusive...
1:53:02Luke Lafreniere:I'm not gonna watch the seven hour video to find out the answer to one question. I think it actually was just at the start, to be perfectly honest. What happened? We were like, hey, somebody at work is getting rid of stuff. Can we get this stuff from them? Excuse me?
1:53:25Linus Sebastian:what part of you cannot use your influence but you can ask for anything
1:53:32Luke Lafreniere:no you can ask david for anything what you have super broken the rules like crazy before by asking
1:53:39Linus Sebastian:david what are you talking about i don't i could what rule breaking i could go dig up some examples i mean just in this episode i think this episode there was a rule that you had to go you had to stay in pairs and you guys sent out one but it explicitly said in the rules that you can ask for an exception to that explicitly what do you mean you don't know i didn't know it is it said an exception for that one yes it did no i'm not saying it didn't i just didn't know that okay
1:54:07Luke Lafreniere:dude that's been a rule of scrapyard wars for years you cannot use your influence and i would say asking a friend or co-worker or family member falls pretty clearly it wasn't it wasn't it wasn't
1:54:21Linus Sebastian:asking they were going to give it away for free anyways so it was like could we know the that's why we clarified it or something and then acquire it that way it's a very good thing that
1:54:38Luke Lafreniere:you know what whatever it's been out for like over a week now it's a very good thing that you
1:54:44Linus Sebastian:guys lost see i thought it was because crazy i thought it was crazy i thought he's gonna say no no matter what and then when he said yes i thought it was because we must have been getting stomped and he was trying to like showrunner it and make it closer oh yeah same i think what we discussed
1:55:01Luke Lafreniere:during this like seven hour video he was on so many like painkillers yeah and i think there was just a miscommunication but we did ask um so yeah whatever because my thing was like there's no way
1:55:13Linus Sebastian:that's gonna fly but you can ask if you want i think we'll be way more careful next year yeah
1:55:18Luke Lafreniere:if there is a next year luke band dan band that is wild that is wild because i mean dude dude i i I mean, I got friends, you know? I could be like, hey, Shroud, do you have any old gaming PCs you're planning to give away?
1:55:38Linus Sebastian:There was no asking. There was no asking involved.
1:55:43Linus Sebastian:I thought that might have been what made it okay. I still, I think he just didn't understand what we were saying. Probably because he was on Painkillers. Whatever.
1:55:51Luke Lafreniere:Okay. So what did you get?
1:55:54Linus Sebastian:It was the speakers or something? Speakers.
1:55:57Luke Lafreniere:So that's how you got a speaker set up for free.
1:56:01Linus Sebastian:Yeah. I mean, I got a speaker set up in the last Grappard Wars for free that was arguably better. So, I don't know. I also actually thought that's why he okayed it. It was because it's actually not that hard to get audio stuff for super cheap.
1:56:15Luke Lafreniere:I had to pay for audio.
1:56:17Linus Sebastian:Literally, last Grappard Wars. You got good stuff. I got wicked audio set up with an amp and everything. If you remember that, that was all... Was it free or was it like... I think it was almost free. like like three dollars or something like insultingly reminiscing about last time but
1:56:31Luke Lafreniere:we're not talking about last time luke we're talking about this time oh man that is and look look i understand that there were a fair number of folks upset about the fact that my pc was not powered on oh no we talked about that as well totally we talked about that as well we were
1:56:50Linus Sebastian:talking about racing rules i don't think it should have been but i also don't think i should have been able to do a game service thing, but both of those were totally within the rules.
1:56:58Luke Lafreniere:There's definitely some stuff we're going to have to revise about the rules, but the thing about Scrapyard Wars is it has always been the letter of the law and what you can get away with to win.
1:57:10Linus Sebastian:Yeah, I thought the computer in the corner was clever more than anything. It didn't bother me. Oh yeah, that was
1:57:16Luke Lafreniere:amazing. I wanted to make it furniture. So I wanted a table top for it.
1:57:23Linus Sebastian:That would have been great. See, like, that would have made it into the cut.
1:57:26Luke Lafreniere:That's awesome.
1:57:27Linus Sebastian:If people did see it, I think they released it on LMG Clips maybe, but I know it was a float plane. Hold on a second.
1:57:35Luke Lafreniere:Hold on a second. They, Doc, in the float plane chat says, you didn't mention the sub. Oh, that was a... What about the sub? This was a... Oh, yeah, that's right. That probably would have been a bit too far of a stretch. I don't even understand what you guys needed so much money for.
1:57:54Linus Sebastian:Because quite frankly, we blew it on a projector that barely works. Yeah.
1:57:58Luke Lafreniere:Yeah. Quite, quite frankly. Like I, I had to, dude, the, the distribution, like you guys spent$400 on a couch. I'm sitting here going like, bro, or 350.
1:58:09Linus Sebastian:I don't remember what it was. So I wanted the crappy black one.
1:58:12Luke Lafreniere:It was a lot more than ours. I know that much. It was a lot of money.
1:58:15Linus Sebastian:I do think you guys should have lost more points for your couch. Me? Yeah. I think so. You guys should have clearly won to be very clear. I'm not trying to say that. It was very uncomfortable. It was horrifically uncomfortable.
1:58:26Luke Lafreniere:Did you sit on the crack at any point? Oh, dude. Even not on the crack, though. It was so bad. The crack was truly a seventh level of hell. The couch was like
1:58:39Linus Sebastian:$375. It was effectively$400. I thought it was$300. Did we get a discount from there? Ours was like$100 or$150 or something. I thought we got it for less than$375. Projector was$800. Yeah, that was rough. Crazy. I didn't... Yeah. Okay. I don't know enough about projectors. I thought going the projector play was like super good. Obviously, in hindsight, no, but... I think we got locked into it. We talked about this a lot during the director's commentary.
1:59:10Luke Lafreniere:Okay, I feel like we've gotten off topic. I feel like we've gotten off topic. Tell me about the subwoofer. oh that was mine
1:59:20Luke Lafreniere:okay that is cheating I think so that is the most cheating-est thing of any scrapyard wars ever so how did that one fly? I have no idea that is a giant load of bullshit
1:59:35Linus Sebastian:did you ask about that one? probably that's a little too blatant for even me because my my general byline was like if you want to do something whack just make sure you clear with david um but then i also didn't know that david was on tons of painkillers no i wasn't aware of that until this stream exactly exactly oh my god you guys i'm glad it helped so much wow
2:00:02Luke Lafreniere:it's really lucky you guys didn't win because i think that actually i think people would have
2:00:06Linus Sebastian:legitimately been mad i think we would have been dq'd at this point oh yeah absolutely have we ever disqualified anyone? no and there's been really egregious cheating in the past I don't think as bad as just bringing parts from home. Probably not. I don't even remember what they were but probably not, no
2:00:24Luke Lafreniere:wait, didn't we almost disqualify Kyle?
2:00:28Linus Sebastian:what did he do?
2:00:29Luke Lafreniere:I don't remember
2:00:29Linus Sebastian:oh, didn't they just fully actually cheat? no Paul and Kyle in that thing? I thought they did, I thought they super did
2:00:37Luke Lafreniere:I don't think so, did they? They wouldn't cheat does anyone remember i haven't watched any of the old scrapyard paul and kyle were outright dq'd yeah okay i thought something happened okay apparently apparently we have disqualified
2:00:49Linus Sebastian:someone before what did they do i don't remember but i remember like something happened
2:01:00Luke Lafreniere:Uh, they did. They super did. They screwed themselves with V-Sync. What are you guys even talking about? Okay, I don't remember. We need a cheating edition. They used their own drive.
2:01:14Linus Sebastian:Oh, that's right. Oh, yeah. Yeah, yeah. Because their drive died or something, right? Yeah. So it was actually good for, like, the video. Yeah. Because then they were able to present.
2:01:22Luke Lafreniere:Because didn't, did they win? Damn, I can't remember anymore. we have to go back and actually like check our win-loss records because i think i think we're pretty close to even now you might still be ahead of me he's gotta be wicked close or tied he's like pissed no i am because i i i see it as like
2:01:44Linus Sebastian:old gen and new gen have i told have i explained this to you before no i haven't because there's a huge gap a gap there's a massive time gap oh i see so i see it as old generation scrapper Wars and new generation Scrapyard Wars. Okay, sure. And in new generation Scrapyard Wars, I'm 0-2. What? You only count? So you don't count the one with the teams? I'm not counting it. I'm just looking at this split. Oh, so since the Scrapyard Wars, pause.
2:02:12Luke Lafreniere:Yes.
2:02:12Linus Sebastian:You're seeing it as like the reboot. Yeah. So in the reboot... Since the reboot, I'm 0-2. That's funny. And both of them honestly weren't that close, which is like bad. It's not great no it's not this last season was by far in my opinion my worst showing ever maybe next time spend more time sleeping uh not launching a platform the same week i tried yeah no i know no no i did everything humanly possible they actually for context for the viewership they actually moved scrap red wars a whole week for me and then he wouldn't have the overlap and then the launch just got delayed and so so like i literally sleep i don't remember a very low amount of hours over the entire thing i think it was like 16 hours over five days i think it was less than that i might and i know like the first day of shooting like when you see us throwing the money up and stuff i had been awake for over 30 hours while we were filming that so that was the day he decided to buy a projector yeah like and then we just kind of ran i have no like it was
2:03:16Luke Lafreniere:it was you know it was honestly if you guys had executed on it perfectly i think you could have won it was a clever concept i can't understate how like we got from not having the mount because
2:03:31Linus Sebastian:because actually everyone's time went into setting the mount up and i know the people who actually did the mount stuff gonna be like what that's not fair it is because then that meant we couldn't
2:03:43Luke Lafreniere:like drive places yeah and but you know what's you know what the funny part is it was it was so rough i don't really understand um and i mean i don't mean any disrespect i know that in in a time of like you know frantically trying to problem solve sometimes you can come up with not the best solutions but like why did you guys try to 3d print a mount why didn't you just go get a piece of wood and just like screw the piece of wood into the thing and then just like put it on a freaking like hinge or something like why did you try to why did you try to 3d print amount like literally just literally just put a freaking get a piece of wood and literally put a big screw into it and freaking bend it you know like if you're gonna be jank just like just jank it yeah we probably should have done that um i don't know but like how much time yeah or put the projector on a shelf i didn't even think of that one which goes to shelf yeah yeah why don't you just put it on a shelf behind the couch then uh they wouldn't go and buy one i got us free shelving
2:04:52Linus Sebastian:so i don't think that makes sense how much time do you think got spent between you and justin on on them on the mount and mounting it i um i wasn't involved in the mount um well you're mounting it like and you read way too long 3d print at some point right no i had to modify it kind of last
2:05:10Luke Lafreniere:day because yeah yeah um no no comment really um chris app says yeah people 3d print things for all kinds of stuff that would be easier if you just didn't 3d print it well no that's a thing for sure but it like it it literally took it took like a person and a half out of the competition
2:05:30Linus Sebastian:for us really oh yeah yeah like i i i genuinely cannot overstate how devastating that was would
2:05:38Luke Lafreniere:have been a lot better to just go to a home depot buy some screws and hinges and things sure alexander the terrible asks can you clarify what the rules were for tools so people can stop saying linus cheated for using a freaking paint roller uh the rules are that we're allowed to use any tools that we could realistically have access to in the office and one one 3d printer and one 3d printer there was also you were allowed to use your own tools okay tool use was not the problem yeah no at all but it was but materials counted yes except you had unlimited filament for one printer for one printer yeah yeah and only one printer and only one because that's the limiting factor not the plastic yeah um i didn't realize that we were allowed to mount stuff to the walls
2:06:23Linus Sebastian:with like they would give us backing wood like if you wanted to mount a tv to a wall i had no idea that was a thing until they mentioned it in the stream did you know that was a thing yeah okay so none of the contestants knew i i would have mounted a tv to the wall though the reason why i asked if you knew it was a thing and was pretty sure you didn't was because obviously
2:06:43Luke Lafreniere:you would have done that no i wouldn't have i didn't have money i couldn't afford a mount dude i had i had a dollar 38 left like we dude yeah we were down to no offense but we scrapped harder than you guys. We didn't scrap at all, actually. You guys paid a fortune for your rug? You guys paid a fortune for your couch?
2:07:06Linus Sebastian:I think we paid a lot less than you for a rug, I think. Did you?
2:07:11Luke Lafreniere:Rug, rug, rug, rug, rug. Okay, maybe I'm wrong about the rug, but the couch! The couch was really expensive. We thought we had tons of money when we got the couch. Rug,$25. Okay, you guys slayed on the rug then. I found the rug. In general, dude, I was watching your side and i was just like oh my god like how do they have all this money and it's because they didn't need a compute device well yeah like we we spent almost 400 on a playstation 112 and then we bought
2:07:39Linus Sebastian:we bought movies okay so there's been a lot of talk about the shadow thing as well and i feel pretty bad for shadow yeah they got kind of boned by just our internet being sucked that day i i I wish it was explained a little bit better. It was explained decently well, but I wish there was like almost a disclaimer on screen of how much testing I did. Cause this was very explicitly communicated through David. And I think this was actually fine. He let me do testing of it when it was acting weird outside of hours. I wasn't allowed to actually work on like my own system, but I could run shadow at my house and be like, is it working?
2:08:17Linus Sebastian:Right. And I could like go to friends houses and be like, run shadow. Is it working? and it was working perfectly fine the entire week everywhere I tested, which was tons of places. I don't think this is in the EULA necessarily, but I was sharing the heck out of my account with everyone I knew, getting them to run it from everywhere they could at all times and day, and there was literally never a problem except for at our office. And something with how our firewall is set up, I don't remember. Sean was trying to work on it.
2:08:51Luke Lafreniere:i mean that's i think that's why our adventure time stream looked like crap too probably it was
2:08:56Linus Sebastian:terrible it looked like 240p there's something weird and i know that's like literally my department lol but there's something weird with with how that set up and that totally nuked shadow that is that is not i know there was some comments being like oh this is just what streaming experience is like no and there are some issues there but no but not at this level
2:09:15Luke Lafreniere:like at all we have like like an enterprise grade connection here it's like i forget what the exact whole thing is but basically it's it's the closest thing to if we had a dedicated fiber line without actually having our own fiber run through the street and we've got like three of them there is no reason why we should have anything but the cleanest possible connection to vanix which should have the cleanest possible connection i had somebody on a copper 100 100 line
2:09:41Linus Sebastian:yeah that ran it great on like a eight-year-old computer like this was not it was not shadow yeah so like it was just bad luck i the projector all right cool yeah i i did not executive decision that call just to be very clear um but we were we were also saying like you know sports if only i
2:10:09Luke Lafreniere:had made that pass yeah if only i had trained a bit harder if only i didn't come to work drunk if only I you know it's like you can go you can go look back forever in in highlights yeah like that I I wish we didn't make that call shadow you guys could have gotten away with the projector if you had also painted the room I can't I originally wanted to do silver screen room but there's so much and I don't think we should nationally talk about it on stream but there is a
2:10:38Linus Sebastian:lot of reasons and stuff yeah we don't really want to go into right now I can explain how torpedo the team got when we didn't get them out it when i'm saying a person and a half at least a person and a half we're just removed from the competition we didn't get that mount that's rough and yeah we should have just mounted it in an easier way whatever i also don't even i
2:10:58Luke Lafreniere:mean i watched the interaction where they picked it up i don't even blame them for taking the projector because you guys had decided on the projector and you did say get them out but like also like you're trying to you're trying to like you're under you're under time constraint like i understand why they made the call to just take it anyway and go yeah we can figure out amount because it can't be that hard i didn't know there was amount properly you know otherwise it
2:11:21Linus Sebastian:would have been like no we need them out but i hear you it was communicated but even then i
2:11:26Luke Lafreniere:wouldn't assume like okay look if somebody sent me to go get a camera and they told me yeah it doesn't have like the plate that goes under it i'd be like well yeah i mean i'm still buying the camera uh i'll figure out i'll figure out a plate like that can't be that hard i wouldn't think that
2:11:41Linus Sebastian:getting a projector mount is that hard the shadow problems i did work on the outside of ours i also spent an egregious amount of time working on them inside of ours like between right the mount and shadow we basically had like sammy who couldn't drive around by herself i was about i was about
2:11:57Luke Lafreniere:to say sammy was your team's like standout oh she's the only reason we got like any points at all
2:12:04Linus Sebastian:yeah she did great the fact that was given nothing i don't i don't know how well communicated was in the video she had i what was it like 14 minutes to make the room cool or something your room just went from from casting couch to inviting lobby in like a shockingly small amount of time and with
2:12:25Luke Lafreniere:very little budget i remember her i was very impressed i need at least 30 minutes to be clear I wasn't surprised because I saw what Sammy did with the budget that I gave her on the previous season, which was even less. Yeah, but I was very impressed.
2:12:40Linus Sebastian:Yeah. Oh, Lordy. Yeah, she did great. We gave her nothing. And she did good with it.
2:12:55Luke Lafreniere:Okay, Dunphy says, 58 seconds in episode one. can only use items purchased using the budget linus sold a soundbar yes but i sold a soundbar that i only have because i bought it i'm completely fine with that i think that's pretty standard that's canon at this point that if you can wheel and deal yeah i don't know if that's
2:13:15Linus Sebastian:in the rules or not but like that is completely fine i think it's i think it's i think it's allowed
2:13:19Luke Lafreniere:by legal precedent sure regardless of whether it's in the scrapyard constitution objectively good for the game oh yeah if you can if you can flip like uh yeah totally totally cool dude that tv deal saved me that tv deal was incredible if i got a 75 watching you wheel for that was so dope
2:13:39Linus Sebastian:that was actually awesome dude i was i was uh watching it was painful for myself because i was just staring at myself doing dumb things i'm way too freaking tired um and then i could i could see myself in a conversation with someone knowing that behind the the back of my laptop is actually sauce plus instead of scavador's listings i'm like man sorry entire team i kind of screwed everyone over this season but um watching some of your team stuff was cool and that that wheel
2:14:09Luke Lafreniere:and dealing for the tv was awesome mcbane run the numbers i never went negative money last season that didn't happen i thought you went credit card no went over budget credit card no i didn't go over budget. I had to use money off my credit card because I left the cash somewhere. I was a negative budget. I was never out of money.
2:14:29Linus Sebastian:I thought you did. I just had to
2:14:30Luke Lafreniere:move it around creatively because it wasn't in the same physical place that I was. No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no. Alright. If anything, I have been on my best behavior the last couple of seasons. I will say much, much better than in the past. Now it's our turn. Hey, look, look, look, look, look. I have always Look at us, we are the cheaters now Where did we learn it, mom? I've always followed rules It's just that we used to have much more ill-defined rules So they were easier to more egregiously skirt Whereas now we actually For better or for worse We have pretty well-defined rule sets So I have to I have to be more creative In my interpretation I think what we learned this season
2:15:17Linus Sebastian:Is the rules around the PC being required should probably be more explicit.
2:15:22Luke Lafreniere:And those were intentionally vague. They were. For one season, I think that's fine. We were talking about racing stuff on the live stream. Like F1 is basically, that rule book's like 3 ,000 pages long. And people still are trying to find ways to do what Linus did with a computer, which is like part of sport. That's part of sport. Exactly. And it was left vague for Linus to do that.
2:15:45Linus Sebastian:And you can do that one time and that's good. I don't want to be encouraged to try a shadow solution again. But it was neat to try one time. I'm just sad that I really... We weren't going to win. You guys won. I'm not trying to argue that. But if shadow worked...
2:16:06Luke Lafreniere:And my trophy is super cool this year.
2:16:08Linus Sebastian:If shadow worked, I think it would have been a lot cooler. I didn't even know it would have been closer.
2:16:12Luke Lafreniere:Didn't even know we were going to get trophies.
2:16:15Linus Sebastian:Oh, I didn't know we were going to get trophies. They were a surprise to me too. Because, like, the projector was not configured, and the speakers lost their configuration. Someone, this is not why we lost it. No, no, no, no. You messed us up, too.
2:16:26Luke Lafreniere:So when I was testing on my laptop, I was getting 5.1, 6.1. The little PC wasn't able to output.
2:16:36Linus Sebastian:I had a spare little PC. Maybe you should have tried with that.
2:16:39Luke Lafreniere:Yeah, in the 10 minutes that I had to test everything. I hated when mom and dad fight. Shut up!
2:16:43Linus Sebastian:He's busy trying to mount the projector with all his time. This is your conversation. Get out of here, Linus.
2:16:49Luke Lafreniere:Everybody, we never fought before you were born.
2:16:53Linus Sebastian:It's your fault. Ultimately, I was captain of the ship. I should have done a better job. It lands on me. You don't have to fall on that sword. No, I think I do. I'm the one that didn't execute on literally anything.
2:17:05Luke Lafreniere:I'm just going to say my team's teamwork was immaculate. You guys killed it. We were dialed.
2:17:11Linus Sebastian:No comment. We were dialed. I had definitely my roughest season and you guys just killed it the whole time my entire team my
2:17:19Luke Lafreniere:entire team MVP like Pancras was awesome Sebastian was awesome Natalie was awesome we had some really
2:17:27Linus Sebastian:fantastic team moments too the fact that we got a room oh dude is crazy yes like I the the push through at the end was wild um dan just like melting plastic knives into the roof crazy i was not particularly happy that i had to do that but it worked i mean country girls make do right my god i don't know if everyone's gonna get that reference you gotta get there you gotta get there somewhere like we're not going to lose
2:18:02Luke Lafreniere:or we're not going to we're not going to show we're not going to yeah we're going to show up
2:18:07Linus Sebastian:for for the game right because we after after like yeah there was a there was a moment where i was thrown a crazy curveball where i was informed that my little mini pc idea would not work and then i lost hours to re-realizing oh no my idea was actually fine the mini pc would work and then I so I lost a lot of time with that and then I lost I lost at least half a day to that which probably wouldn't have lost that much if I was awake um and then I lost an enormous amount of time like almost all the rest of my time trying to figure out shadow or driving that was like all the rest of it so I was not very useful angry panda pc in float plane chat says hey Luke at least you had a very entertaining team I think so you did have that you guys were very entertaining to watch.
2:18:57Linus Sebastian:If I tried to detach myself and watch as if I wasn't in the show, I thought our team was Dan specifically was very entertaining.
2:19:08Luke Lafreniere:Roman asks who threw harder? Luke throwing the game or Dan throwing the projector? Oh, but he caught it. Dan dropping that projector. The reaction to that was crazy. That was like one of the craziest Scrapyard Wars moments ever. If I remember correctly. holding half of your team's entire budget and not not only was i holding half of the budget i also fell over the rest of the audio system including the av receiver and literally everything else yeah so in one tiny little move i could have destroyed all of our equipment um and i thought it was going to fall through the wall because it's like paper thin uh but no it seemed okay i crushed it against the wall of my hand and that broke its fall so good i heard you told me a little
2:19:54Linus Sebastian:bit about it and then i was not going to tell you anything about it yeah i think you told me that you bled but that i'd have to watch it in the edit and then watching the edit the whole time
2:20:02Luke Lafreniere:i was just like oh my god that was amazing i think people didn't because we were talking in canadian dollars i think people didn't fully understand how good my tv deal was by the way this is what i paid dude your playstation deal was insane that was a great deal the playstation deal and the tv deal were crazy for so that was another thing that people didn't fully appreciate was my price on the playstation they were like why is one so excited about this price because i paid
2:20:30Linus Sebastian:canadian freaking dollars 400 bucks in there because because what's communicated to the audience at the beginning of the episode i think is that we have 1400 or whatever yes but then the whole time we're actually talking had two thousand dollars two thousand dollars so it's a little How much did I pay for the PlayStation again? You said 400 bucks, yeah.
2:20:49Luke Lafreniere:So I paid 288 US dollars for a PlayStation 5. When I saw that in the episode, I was like, that's just... Two Dual Senses. I hear 460. And I got... Even 460. Oh, sorry, sorry, sorry. Okay, let's fix it. I paid 460. 460 with the three games, though. And two controllers. I paid$332 for a PS5, two Dual Senses, and three games. One of the games I sold for like 20 bucks, I think, 15 or 20 dollars. So I actually paid like 320 bucks US for a PS5 and two DualSenses. And then for the TV, I paid 396 US dollars for a 75 inch TV with a free like 200 dollar MSRP. So 150 US dollar soundbar that I sold for 100 Canadian dollars.
2:21:40Luke Lafreniere:so I paid like $320 for a 75 inch TV
2:21:47Linus Sebastian:first of all Pankrat's watching right now I had no idea you were the guy at the shipping can from last I had no idea that was him that was nuts I didn't know that until he told me no one told me until I was just watching the episode and I was like wait what and then obviously it was like obvious when watching the episode again
2:22:07Luke Lafreniere:so David Pankrat's from my team this year is the guy who gave Luke his free PC last year.
2:22:14Linus Sebastian:I didn't use any of it, but... Well, whatever. So that was nuts. And then when he was like selling the soundbar and the guy offered a hundred bucks or whatever, and then I think he tried contacting you to like see if it was cool or not. I was like, oh my God, just take it. I was worried he was going to not get the deal. We got an offer on it really fast. People were like,
2:22:35Luke Lafreniere:because it was brand new in box, right? That's always my concern with trying to resell
2:22:39Linus Sebastian:is if it doesn't work out, you can be kind of screwed. But that TV was probably worth buying anyways.
2:22:44Luke Lafreniere:Last season, we ran into trouble where we used far more than what we had budgeted for the PC. And we had like two full computers worth of stuff. And people were like grinding me on the price, trying to get me to bundle basically all of it for like, well, realistically, it was about what I paid anyway. So I wasn't going to lose money. But I was stressed because I was like, I wanted to get rid of it for like a decent price. I wish we'd sold you the CPU last year when you guys wanted to buy it and we thought you were just messing with us. Oh, yeah. That would have been so funny. That would have been funny.
2:23:18Luke Lafreniere:That would have been a first for Scrapyard Wars is one team actually buying an item from the other team. Yeah. I hope it happens someday. I'm not going to force it. No, no, no. But I hope it happens organically someday. It would be very funny. Oh, man. Anyway, if you want to see us talk about this for seven hours straight. Oh, yeah, right. We should move on. Check out the Float Plane episode. Float Plane episode. uh oh also there's another float plane exclusive this week uh luke and sammy visit ifa that is wow that is quite the thumbnail we did that on purpose okay uh yeah well people like i was
2:23:51Linus Sebastian:talking about heck yeah i was talking about how with sammy i was talking about how thumbnails with mouth open get less views really and then he was like it's float plane let's just send it i was like okay sure interesting is there a correct amount of mouth open or uh this is apparently a mr. beast thing so if you look at like let's see here if you look at his stuff lately
2:24:21Linus Sebastian:yeah so like if his mouth is open his teeth are clenched like he doesn't have mouth gape yeah interesting no mouth gape none there's a little little one little one tiny tiny and there's technically a little one right here yeah okay but only like very very minor none of the like oh that we're used to from back in the day right yeah yeah yeah and that's been going on for quite a while now and yeah they released a thing a while ago saying they did they did a bunch of a b testing of like the exact same thumbnail but just one of them had some mouth gape and one of them didn't and the one without mouth gape always performed a little bit better interesting yeah how do you know there's differences with different audiences and stuff like i don't know that that's gonna work for whatever different youtube channel but um yeah all right why don't we jump into whatever we're supposed to do showing off those new veneers uh as far as my understanding goes those are photoshopped there's some weird i watched a thing on it there's a weird they they do it in video sometimes too and he'll like turn it away and it'll like turn off and you can see his normal teeth and then he'll turn back and they like clip back in odd really odd choice yeah oh really apparently he has it wasn't photoshopped he has new fake teeth
2:25:43Luke Lafreniere:oh crazy don't veneers like ruin your natural teeth though i have no idea dude i thought they did i thought they have to like like shave down part of your teeth in order to apply them or something that that always seemed like uh that always seemed like an odd choice to me and this is even this is even coming from someone who is like done face treatments and you know whatever right like i've done uh morpheus 8 i've done um micro needling um yes your actual teeth are just little spikes you've got to be kidding me crazy there are covers more than like gluing plastic to the front of them you have to permanently have them shut up i have heard about regrowing teeth though they're working on i think it's a drug treatment right where they can like stimulate t3 growth or something huh
2:26:46Luke Lafreniere:it's just better protecting the net crowns do the same thing but basically just artificial protecting the natural part but can't you have issues where where like the real teeth under it are like impossible to clean and therefore they can like decay or something i don't know i haven't i haven't looked into um i haven't looked into veneers a ton um yeah so they did use ai to edit
2:27:10Linus Sebastian:his teeth for a while um but apparently hold on hold on okay where oh because i had seen i had seen stuff like this before so you see like here it's just a flat line and then he actually has like shape to his teeth right right right right right uh i i had seen someone make like a an uh There's a whole video with a lot more detail on it. I can't imagine caring that much about Jimmy's teeth, but sure. I thought it was interesting the lengths they would go to and the fact that they went to those lengths but then also left examples of it clipping back to real blah blah blah blah. But yeah, I guess he has veneers now.
2:27:50Linus Sebastian:I don't know.
2:27:51Luke Lafreniere:Dude, if I had major dental issues, I think I would just go straight to solid white gold teeth. why do they have to be separate can't they just be like one well no no no individual solid one tooth i think i would go i think i'd go straight for just the implants dan just wants like a like uh like you ever uh you get the mouth guard blade just just just give me a giant gold blade Jim Carrey's The mask look Yeah there you go That's an old reference Horrifying What are we on right now? 2:29:28Luke Lafreniere:It says, Luke, tell the story about the magnificent pizza you and Sammy had in Berlin. I have no context for this. So, the only... What the hell is happening? Stop it. I'm trying to put it on Luke cam.
2:29:40Linus Sebastian:Okay, there we go. Oh.
2:29:44Luke Lafreniere:Wait, what? What are your notes for this? Okay. Well, Luke, tell the story of the magnificent pizza you had in Berlin. I will not... What are Dan's notes? I don't know! They never tell me anything!
2:29:55Linus Sebastian:Okay, well, a long time ago, I've been to Germany either two or three times. Was it two separate trips for Sennheiser and Cherry? It was one trip? So I've been to Germany twice then. And one time I did some adventuring with Brandon afterwards, the last time I was there. and we went to specifically one place that had pizza and only one place that had pizza and we ordered a margarita pizza and it was the best pizza i've ever had nice so when i was going around doing random stuff with sammy this time i was telling him all about the pizza and how good it was and i'm saying he should get one we ordered a margarita pizza and do you have a photo of it is that what you have no then what's what's prepped the shot calls like regular cam there's no luke cam call in this okay sure now there's no music um anyways when i think of margarita pizza this is what i think of which is what comes up when you search margarita pizza yeah in google
2:30:56Luke Lafreniere:images that's a margarita pizza disappointingly there is no alcoholic slushy beverage i mean
2:31:03Linus Sebastian:sure it says pizza i mean yeah margarita pizza i'm sure i can make an ai image of that lime and tequila but you see like like this is kind of the quintessential one that i think of sure yep You can usually see the sauce between the mozzarella slices. You've got basil, like a pretty substantial amount of basil. Get that leaf. Cool. We got a pizza that looked a lot more like this, except just no green at all. Disappoint. It was just what I would call as a North American, a cheese pizza. Yes. That's it. I thought we got pizza scammed because they had a photo that looked almost exactly like this. on the i think that's an ai photo but they had a photo that looked almost exactly like that on their menu we ordered a margarita pizza are you going somewhere with this no i don't know why this is part of so you had bad food uh yeah basically okay we then asked flow plane and apparently this is a margarita pizza yeah it is that sucks i hate that that's
2:32:02Luke Lafreniere:true they both are it basically just means cheese pizza but that's ridiculous the fancier ones are
2:32:08Linus Sebastian:just like nicer cheese pizza yeah that's crazy yeah i've had margarita pizza that is that and i
2:32:12Luke Lafreniere:don't order margarita pizza anymore because every time i order it is deeply disappointing so speaking of that i guess oh you know what's also disappointing wrist pain improper wrist support during your nine to five could lead to repetitive strain injuries putting you out of commission delta hub's carpio wrist rest aims to address that but with a twist it can glide with your hand as it moves around your desk which is great for transitioning from mouse to keyboard and for gamers who play with lower sensitivity a bunch of folks here at lmg use them so it was a natural fit to collaborate and to bring you an exclusive ltt edition of the carpio click our link in the description today to pick up one for your mousing hand or a right left bundle for a discounted price so we were just supposed to talk until someone said the word disappointing i have no idea you will answer for this i don't think it was dan's plan regular cam luke tell story about the magnificent pizza linus cam you know what's also disappointing wrist pain so i was video insert number 21
2:33:22Linus Sebastian:three injury to just you got it you nailed it i mean i'm not good i was trying to get us there and then you just this is also the first time i've seen use of the wide cam in a in a shot call true cool okay anyways it pisses me off that those are both margarita pizzas i think that is stupid yeah and i think people need to get their act together and figure that out because that is
2:33:44Luke Lafreniere:absurd you know what else is stupid google's android shenanigans and they've been officially called out by a graphene os developer on the official graphene os twitter account oh for recent moves that make graphene os less secure it's a strange time to talk about android protecting users android recently changed the security update system in a way which massively downgrades security and puts users at risk commercial exploit companies and governments can easily obtain access to broadly distributed partner previews adding four-month delays for patches is atrocious also in june you claimed aosp wasn't going anywhere you then proceeded to not release the July or August monthly updates to AOSP, followed by not releasing the September quarterly update.
2:34:30Luke Lafreniere:You officially communicated to the media and said AOSP releases were continuing, followed by three months of not publishing releases to it. Why should people believe what you say about sideloading?
2:34:44Luke Lafreniere:Well said. Well said, Graphene OS. Thank you very much for that. Google, get it together, please. Because I actually do want Apple to have competition. I think it's good for them. Intel, speaking of things that happen when you don't have enough competition, they just love 14 nanometers so much that they launched yet another 14 nanometer chip this week. The source here is Tom's Hardware, who is reporting on Intel's new 14 nanometer, and I kid you not, plus, plus, plus desktop CPU that it turns out is just a 10th gen CPU from, is it four years ago? The Core i5-110 appears, as far as anybody can tell, to be literally a Core i5-10400 from 2020.
2:35:42Luke Lafreniere:So, sorry, excuse me, five years ago. here's a comparison page of the two cpus from intel directly so we're going to start at the bottom okay just for funsies vtx with extended page tables yes yes virtualization technology for directed io yes yes virtualization technology yes yes ah intel stable it platform program no oh also no i'm not going to read all of these so we're just going to go through and see if there's any differences that intel can identify between these two chips any at all intel waiting for it no no yes yes package size identical t-junction identical lga 1200 brother you are launching a cpu on a two platforms ago socket.
2:36:42Luke Lafreniere:Are you kidding me right now? And it's not like when AMD launches a new AM4 chip and we're like, hey, bro, move. Because there's a lot of AM4 users out there who are running legitimately much older chips that might need an upgrade now. This is like, you only supported this for a couple real generations and then some like weird refreshes. Some FACO ones. So people who have this like already have a 10th gen CPU. This isn't an upgrade to any of that. Okay. Scalability. 1S only. 1S. That means the same thing.
2:37:22Linus Sebastian:Yeah, so far as I can tell, the differences are actually just the same. They're just written different.
2:37:27Luke Lafreniere:The device ID is the same. Do we need to keep going? Let's keep going. QuickSync, OpenGL support. Oh lordy. Yeah, that's all the same. That's all the same. Oh! 1.10 versus 1.1 gigahertz.
2:37:50Linus Sebastian:Data entry is really fun.
2:37:53Luke Lafreniere:It's DDR4. They're launching a DDR4 CPU today. Why call it a new CPU? literally the only difference is the launch date
2:38:13Linus Sebastian:these are all just zeros
2:38:17Luke Lafreniere:and the name you didn't even f***ing discount it now to be clear the fact that they are the same price on arc or sorry uh intel.com slash content which used to be called arc and used to have a cool brand and was way cooler way cooler um just because it says 200 on arc does not mean that intel expects anybody to pay 200 for these what is realistically probably happening is these are for developing markets where there's still a good volume of like old socket old chipset motherboards and they can kind of dump them into markets that are, for example, that have extremely high taxes in the form of tariffs on imports, for instance.
2:39:06Luke Lafreniere:And so it's just at a high price to make sure that nobody outside of those markets is going to be caring about this and clamoring for them. But like, can we just stop with the deceptive branding? This is not a new product. It doesn't need a new name. just sell cheap 10 400s i i don't i don't i don't get it i don't understand i do get it i just hate it what is it then what does the product launch help with the product launch helps make it look new to people who don't know and to people who won't do this comparison so someone who like think about the way that okay i'm gonna have to come up with an example i was gonna say blender but you would research the crap out of a blender so um think about the way that you would buy finding
2:39:56Linus Sebastian:an example you don't buy anything if i do i research the crap out of it think about the
2:40:02Luke Lafreniere:way that emma would buy a knife okay she would go to a store and there would be some knives and if one of them was the same knife from five years ago but with like but it was you know we had a new handle on it that made it look like the knife from this year which realistically if it's a knife that's called the 2025 edition that might actually be the only change yeah she'd be like that's the new one and so to the person who's going in and not like an enthusiast for knives or you know whatever they just go into a store and this is a this is core ultra i love how you
2:40:39Linus Sebastian:you picked a category that we have like solid ones in because i looked it up
2:40:47Luke Lafreniere:yeah well like look the point is that most people don't care about the things that don't really impact them that much i suspect you wouldn't i suspect you wouldn't research a water bottle very much no i think that you would just buy a water bottle and you'd be like four ltt ones i just had nalgene ones yeah it would just be kind of whatever that is fair um and so there are there are absolutely categories that we're not enthusiasts for and that's who they're targeting with this i mean it's not like a it's not like a cutting edge top of the line gaming processor it's like a it's a six core 10th gen right so which to be clear is actually still going to provide a pretty decently good gaming experience if it's paired with a with a like an appropriate gpu it's it's a good chip and so my problem is not that they're selling it my problem is just like why do we have to have this deceptive branding i hate it just tell me what it is that is my end of my ted talk ebay restricts items over 500 from shipping to the u.s on august 27th ebay started enforcing an update to its seller listing policy for sales to the united states to limit the sale of items from certain countries to 500 including shipping according to the policy page on ebay there had previously been restrictions in place but for items up to$2 ,500 in value.
2:42:12Luke Lafreniere:The list of restricted countries is available on the eBay source link here, and eBay states that the policy is to ensure a good shopping experience for U.S. buyers and maintain high-quality shipping performance. I've actually seen quite a few Americans upset about shipping times. I saw one that was about dbrand, which our sponsor team is looking into, But what I will say is probably it is it has been very challenging to get shipping to get shipments into the U.S. in a timely and cost effective manner with all of the tariff. Will they won't they will they won't they yes they will but not like this seesawing that has been going on.
2:42:57Luke Lafreniere:So this is this is this is a practical impact.
2:43:01Linus Sebastian:This is interesting because I looked up the list that they linked. Yeah. Like Canada's not on here. Why Portugal but not Spain? Germany's not on here. Switzerland's not on here.
2:43:15Linus Sebastian:No France.
2:43:17Luke Lafreniere:La France. But French Polynesia is. Yeah. And French Guinea.
2:43:21Linus Sebastian:Guyana? I don't know. Singapore is. That's kind of surprising to me. I don't know, man. Is Taiwan on here? Nope.
2:43:32Luke Lafreniere:Are you saying Taiwan is a country?
2:43:33Linus Sebastian:Yeah.
2:43:35Luke Lafreniere:Based. Hell yeah.
2:43:38Linus Sebastian:Based as f***. Hell yeah. Is China on here? Um. Oh, I don't know. No. What's the decision making here?
2:43:51Luke Lafreniere:I don't know. I just am saying, yeah, this is what happens when things are confusing. Things get confusing. Hey, though. Weird. Nintendo got another video game patent. Yay. Yay. I know you were excited to talk about this.
2:44:07Linus Sebastian:It's interesting. I don't obviously like it, but I think it's something to be aware of. And it's interesting. Nintendo has been granted a patent that covers the ability to summon another character and make them battle on your behalf, which by itself is like, oh God. It then goes on to describe things in more detail. A console or other system is being used to run a video game from storage. that was kind of weird just off the hop I thought that was weird because why wouldn't a game cart count maybe that counts as a form of storage I don't know the player controls
2:44:44Luke Lafreniere:anything is storage yeah exactly
2:44:46Linus Sebastian:so it's playing a game a CD is storage
2:44:49Luke Lafreniere:a floppy disk is storage
2:44:50Linus Sebastian:RAM is a form of storage
2:44:52Luke Lafreniere:I mean I wouldn't call it storage it technically is though if I had in my house a cremation you know oven yeah right would you call it storage i mean in that case if if every time the power goes out it stores the fire goes on dust like i don't think your fireplace is storage i'm sorry i'm sorry i disagree with you so if you loaded a game into ram you could avoid their
2:45:24Linus Sebastian:patent um sure i that's my interpretation not a lawyer go ahead i don't think it is i think it is storage but anyways um a console or other system is being used to run a game from storage uh the player controls a character in a virtual space uh the player can perform an input command to make a sub character appear i.e summon another character if there's an enemy where the sub character appears the player can control a battle between the sub-character and the enemy and if there's no enemy where the sub-character appears the sub-character will automatically move around
2:45:59Luke Lafreniere:okay isn't this just a familiar is nintendo do they did they they got this patent the player
2:46:06Linus Sebastian:yeah the player can move the sub-character to a different location on the field and if an enemy is there they can control the battle between the sub-character and the enemy i think one of the minor differences is that the battle wouldn't be between like you and your thing. It's just a battle between the thing that you're controlling and one enemy in this case. You're not involved other than commands.
2:46:35Linus Sebastian:Because I thought like basically any video game warlock like think Diablo not warlock I guess Diablo Necromancer. you're summoning a thing it can go out and fight things but it doesn't perfectly follow this because it's not like one summon because in diablo usually it's multiple and they just kind of hover around you you don't like send them out and it doesn't create like one-on-one battles they just all fight right so it's like it doesn't it doesn't perfect the like necro example doesn't perfectly fit this thing, I don't think. The reason this could be scarier than a traditional trademark is in the case of IP law, Nintendo is required to fight and protect itself with a trademark or else they could lose it.
2:47:24Linus Sebastian:Patents are not like that, meaning Nintendo technically has to pick and choose privileges on which infringement they want to pursue, which gives them even more power. They can let people that they like get away with things and they can go after others, and that won't make them lose this patent. Discussion question, is there a universe out there where a patent on a video game mechanic like this could be good for the consumer? I can't imagine one. Although, it is getting really weird with basically every popular game getting immediately ripped off by Roblox. So, I'm not sure how that works.
2:48:01Luke Lafreniere:Someone in Floatplane chat said apparently a part of the patent is that the thing has to be stored in a sphere. So basically they're trying to patent Pokemon battles, essentially.
2:48:15Luke Lafreniere:Man, could Nintendo just... Nintendo has no problem being the beneficiary of innovative gameplay mechanics. I don't believe that Mario Kart was the first racing game, for instance.
2:48:32Luke Lafreniere:I mean, their sports titles were definitely not the first sports titles. But when they're on the other side of the equation, they behave like petulant children.
2:48:44Luke Lafreniere:I don't think there's really any good justification for this. Adam added to this. Okay, hear me out. Could we create a system where large corpo plaintiffs are allowed to sue, but they have to cover the legal cost of the defendant until the decision is made? that would actually be kind of a cool way to disincentivize like bullcrap lawsuits it's very interesting um could be extended to dmca takedowns if universal wants to sue you they can but they have to pay your court fees while you defend yourself that would be kind of wild i think it's really interesting i think there's some concerns um of like until they win if they win then you're responsible for whatever the judgment is i still i i kind of like this i think it's
2:49:37Linus Sebastian:worth doing i do think there's some concerns like i think people might get a false sense of security i think like i'm obviously gonna win this and then they have infinite money on their end and they just win through money which is like well i think i think you could set it up so that you
2:49:51Luke Lafreniere:have to provide the same funding to both sides so if you if you basically you have to so you have to in escrow or whatever you have to like you have to or not in escrow because then the defendant wouldn't actually have it but whatever you spend pursuing pursuing it oh i think it would have to
2:50:09Linus Sebastian:apply to like individuals that's also cool and interesting yeah but it comes with its own pitfalls in my mind because again false sense of security if you think you're going to win this could ruin you for your entire life versus a slap on the wrist for the game company.
2:50:22Luke Lafreniere:But you'll have a super cool team of lawyers to tell you you're not going to win.
2:50:28Linus Sebastian:And then you'll still lose some money, but not as much, I guess.
2:50:31Luke Lafreniere:Yeah, so you'll have to reach some kind of settlement. The point is just that you wouldn't be able to intimidate people.
2:50:36Linus Sebastian:I think it's cool in general. You wouldn't be able to just... There's definitely an idea here that I think we should do. As if we could do anything.
2:50:43Luke Lafreniere:Yeah, when we're in charge of Canada, then we'll be sure to implement... We're running marathons.
2:50:49Linus Sebastian:Something like that. Running marathons. Yeah, actually kind of cool. Carney ran a marathon. Oh, did he? Got a pretty good time, apparently. Oh, okay, man. Good for him. I didn't actually look into it because I don't care. I saw... But, I mean, that's neat.
2:51:01Luke Lafreniere:I saw that there's talk of, as part of the rift with our southern neighbors and attempts to mend fences with our far eastern neighbors, perhaps getting rid of the 100 % tariffs on Chinese EVs.
2:51:18Linus Sebastian:I've heard very rumor mill things about this. It's very interesting.
2:51:25Luke Lafreniere:Prime Minister Carney, if you're watching, I have a humble request. If you're going to do this, I want a commitment from the Chinese EV manufacturers that they are going to replace the manufacturing jobs that we are going to be losing, especially in Ontario, with their own sort of their own manufacturing within our borders that will at some point probably end up serving other parts of North America as well. I think that's one concession. I also think that we should be getting strong investment from those companies in renewable energy here to support the EV charging that we're going to need to do a lot more of because we're going to have like$11 ,000 EVs.
2:52:13Luke Lafreniere:That is my two cents on the matter. I also think that we need to carefully consider our strategic minerals and not give up too much of that as part of this whole process because I suspect that would be part of... Well, look, I have no problem with the Chinese mining the minerals if they're also manufacturing the batteries and EVs within Canada. I just don't think that's going to go well. They can capitalistically benefit from that harvesting by selling within our market. They can have access to the market. Okay. I mean, I don't think I'm going to get my deal because we also need like canola farmers to be able to export to China and stuff.
2:52:53Luke Lafreniere:There's a whole thing there. But I want some automotive manufacturing on the continent. You can't just like wage. We are the only ones who can manufacture cars anymore warfare. I don't think that's cool.
2:53:06Linus Sebastian:Yeah, I think that's exactly what they want to do, though.
2:53:08Luke Lafreniere:Well, that is exactly what they want to do. Yeah.
2:53:10Linus Sebastian:Yeah. How would you tackle the jobs thing? Because this is a song that has been sang many a time where a company is like, yeah, yeah, yeah, we're going to get a ton of jobs here. We're going to build this like massive factory and then it's 90 % automated and there's 10 jobs. So do you do like it has to be X amount of jobs that are in, you know, some certain level of average income versus the country's. I don't know how you tackle that.
2:53:39Luke Lafreniere:whatever i don't know i mean it obviously needs some consideration because i don't really care if they're manufacturing jobs they could be service jobs they could be whatever doesn't matter as long as there are as long as there is a a net positive workforce uh benefit to
2:53:52Linus Sebastian:having this work being done here i think i actually do care you care about specifically
2:53:58Luke Lafreniere:manufacturing because remember that automated equipment is on our soil now i care in the sense
2:54:03Linus Sebastian:that it should be defined i don't necessarily care that it needs to be manufacturing sure uh Because the reason why I'm saying I do care is because you just said service jobs. If they end up just like opening a bunch of restaurants and then just like...
2:54:17Luke Lafreniere:No, not service. Okay, sure. I see what you mean. So... I meant service like in the... Just like with Scrapyard Wars, they're going to try to work around... Yeah, if there's anyone who would out Scrapyard Wars us, it would be the CCP. Yeah. FanboyNZ says, hot take Linus, Canada car makers should compete. Which ones? beaumont our automa our domestic automotive industry was gutted decades ago by the americans so we're basically just trading one for another at this point make bombardier make cars
2:54:55Linus Sebastian:you mean bombardier bombardier bombardier i want a bombardier car dude wtf is a beaumont
2:55:03Luke Lafreniere:uh beaumont um canadian car manufacturer here you go here you go beaumont automobile this is a 1968 beaumont sd 396 they're kind of sick not gonna lie pretty cool looks a lot like a gto
2:55:29Luke Lafreniere:mid-sized automobiles oh was just oh was a make made by General Motors of Canada so even then it was like it was based on the Chevelle it was barely even Canadian dude a Bombardier car would
2:55:41Linus Sebastian:go sick good go really hard though yeah over the snow yeah yeah yeah they make planes a lot of
2:55:47Luke Lafreniere:companies that made planes went into cars they actually make the sickest plane right now the
2:55:54Linus Sebastian:global 8 000 is like i'm just saying the bmw logo is a propeller there are lots of car companies
2:56:07Luke Lafreniere:that made planes look at this thing proud canadian here boys it is the fastest business jet in the world it has a range of 8 000 nautical miles this thing can go almost 15 000 kilometers on a single fill up and it travels at mach 0.94 wow it's i think it's the fastest plane since the concord don't they have that um well that carries passengers okay yeah obviously a fighter jet
2:56:44Linus Sebastian:or whatever. No, no, no, no, no, no. I thought they had like a new, new, new Concorde thing going on.
2:56:48Luke Lafreniere:I think there's something in development from, um, what's, what's their nuts? Boeing or something, but Lord only knows if that'll ever be finished. Ugh. Seven of lesbians ask, does Bombardier even exist anymore? I thought they were gutted by private equity. I don't know. They seem to be doing okay. Shows you what I know. If, if that's true, but no, that's not my understanding. I thought Bombardier is kind of doing stuff
2:57:13Linus Sebastian:at this point. nw airplane is misinfo regardless my point was that a lot of companies that make cars used to make airplanes and that's true i don't really care too much about the logo um anyway yeah global
2:57:25Luke Lafreniere:8 000 looks sick could literally never afford one uh at zim in floatplane chat says 78 million dollar price tag. Uh. Uh. Uh. Uh. Hold on. Do they have any interior shots? I mean, the interior is basically gonna... Look how big the windows are. My goodness, dude. Are you kidding me? The healthiest of cabins. Look at this.
2:57:53Linus Sebastian:Oh my... Look at this. God.
2:57:59Luke Lafreniere:I guess I'll just sleep in my, like, I don't know, that's at least a full, right? Is that a full-size bed? Yeah. It looks like a full to me. And here's the cuck chair, built right in.
2:58:13Linus Sebastian:Rough. Well, sorry, what's rough?
2:58:17Luke Lafreniere:Being...
2:58:19Linus Sebastian:Not the fabric on the cuck chair.
2:58:21Luke Lafreniere:Yeah, no, definitely not. Okay. Anywho, what are we supposed to be talking about? ah yes okay okay um okay i just liked this because it's what owen um uncle owen and aunt beru did in star wars oh yeah this is it's a it's a moisture evaporator what what are what are they called in star wars are they called moisture evaporators or i thought they had like a few different contraptions i don't know but basically moisture evaporator well yeah that doesn't make any sense what are they called oh just moisture farmer no no i think the thing's called something he's he's not talking about the the moisture evaporators yeah moisture evaporate wait that doesn't make sense either okay well vaporators yeah that doesn't make sense because that would turn it to vapor seems weird moisture evaporators is right it says pancreas i trust pancreas moisture evaporators um i i mean it's star wars technology it doesn't matter the point is now there's star wars technology and that was all i really had to say about that yeah um i just saw this thing and i was like oh my god it's star wars uh mit is testing a new technology to pull water from the air the idea is not new but the hydrogel technology they're using is it's a window-sized panel made of absorbent hydrogel infused with salt folded up and closed in glass the material absorbs water vapor from the air and swells then it shrinks as it evaporates the water condenses on the glass and flows down a tube currently it makes about two-thirds of a cup of water a day but requires zero power the hope is that these could be scaled up and improved to provide drinking water for a single household could be great for emergency situations and the discussion question is how much moisture was uncle owen farming i don't know uh presumably quite a bit because he had like hectares of these moisture evaporators, right?
3:00:14Luke Lafreniere:So Star Wars.
3:00:16Linus Sebastian:I think they kind of brush over it, but I don't think... Did Tatooine have lakes? I don't think any at all. So I think all of the water for that entire planet was from these moisture farms. So it must have been like an incredible amount. Yeah. Yeah. Why did anybody settle there? It's crazy. Right? Mexico is taxing video games. I mean, you can say that about places in the world now in real life.
3:00:43Luke Lafreniere:Well, yeah, but in the world now in real life, they were like always there. But like Tatooine is like space travel. Like I understand why the Tuscans are there. I don't understand why humans bothered. Fair enough. It's like, do you really have to imperial like conquer and occupy everything?
3:01:02Luke Lafreniere:Mexico has published their 2026 economic package and under the healthy taxes section. Yeah. There is a mention of an 8 % special tax on digital services offering violent video games. Here's their reason. Recent studies have found a relationship between the use of violent video games and higher levels of aggression among adolescents, as well as negative social and psychological effects such as isolation and anxiety. Referring to the study, the effect of video games on social, psychological, and physiological variables in children and adolescents, there we go the article itself as some people have pointed out is actually a well-written study the problem is it's from 2012 and has outdated information such as references to myspace others pointed out that the economic package also cherry-picks certain words and cases from the study to justify the tax even further um our discussion question is while the narrative of video games cause violence, continues to parade through politics, and often has studies disproving it, even if it were true, is an 8 % tax the correct solution if they were trying to somehow mitigate the supposed damage that these video games are doing?
3:02:20No.
3:02:20Luke Lafreniere:So the very fact that their solution is to tax it by 8 % belies that they obviously don't actually consider this to be a problem that they need to solve, because if they did, they would have a real solution not just a silly little tax so basically yeah it's a steam tax which you know our moisture evaporator moisture evaporators are only getting two thirds of a cup a day we can't pay a steam tax
3:02:53Linus Sebastian:i love that you tripped over the name because it's like actually so bad of a name yeah oh well yikes i don't have a lot to say to that other than yikes um sure google admits the open web is in rapid decline google's lawyers in a september 5th court ruling court filing said the fact is that today the open web is already in rapid decline uh they were arguing that the plaintiff's divestiture proposal would only accelerate that decline harming publishers who currently rely on open web display advertising revenue. Notable change from May comments by Google VP of Search, Nick Fox, saying, in quotes, from our point of view, the web is thriving.
3:03:42Linus Sebastian:But there's good news. A co-creator of RSS... Oh, yeah, this is actually really interesting. A co-creator of RSS, Eckert Walter, helped launch RSL, or Really Simple Licensing, a free and open standard that ours technica calls beefed up robots.txt instructions uh which is a solution to ai discriminating click decimating decimating click throughs or uh pay per crawl
3:04:11Luke Lafreniere:the discussion question is will loms pay up against rsl i mean no i mean they've stolen everything up until now so what are we do we really think there's any hope that this will fix
3:04:21Linus Sebastian:anything um i think that it will help lay legal framework for fighting i think that's really the only chance i don't think it's actually going to stop anything from happening um but it should put some ammunition on the side of people that are upset about it um we've got a couple more today
3:04:45Luke Lafreniere:Warner Brothers is an unlikely ally in the fight against AI slop and has sued MidJourney. On Thursday, Warner Bros. Discovery filed a lawsuit against AI company MidJourney for purposefully infringing copyrighted work to the tune of either$150 ,000 per infringed work, which could add up to hundreds of millions, or all profits that MidJourney has made related to WB properties. In the 101-page suit, Warner Bros. lawyers write, Evidently, Midjourney will not stop stealing property until a court orders it to stop. Midjourney's large-scale infringement is systematic, ongoing, and willful, and Warner Bros.
3:05:30Luke Lafreniere:discovery has been and continues to be substantially and irreparably harmed by it. There's actually some really good examples. Let me check if the Polygon... Yeah, this is amazing. so this is from Polygon here Dan do you mind linking to the article if people want to check out more of the examples but this is pretty incriminating not only did Mid Journey clearly output know what Superman looks like but like specifically specifically exactly what Warner Bros copyrighted character and now look we can have an awful it's bad out you we can have an awful i don't think that was mid-journey uh we can have an awful long conversation about whether warner brothers fairly compensated the creators of various dc characters and properties and all of that we could we that's a longer conversation but what i will say is mid-journey looks pretty um pretty guilty here and in the current legal framework that is warner brothers ip um this seems like a pretty pretty big yikes we just have to find out again as all of this makes its way through the legal system are there going to be any consequences and will those consequences be lasting because the way that i see it now that all of this is kind of out there um there's no way to put you know pandora back in her box yeah it's out of the box so you know what what happens then does mid-journey go bankrupt but then a bunch of people who have been paying themselves out of mid-journey's investment funds and now have their own personal hordes of wealth just start another one and then use what well Mid-Journey stole that.
3:07:31Linus Sebastian:I mean, it's just out there now. Honestly, likely finding the same investors again in a lot of cases. Same key investors, at least. Yeah, yeah.
3:07:42Luke Lafreniere:Osiris asks, are you going to be seeing Super Mario Galaxy in theaters? Honestly, I'd rather watch it at home. Is that the name of the sequel? I'm amazed they went straight to the galaxy. Okay, cool. Yeah, I'd rather watch it at home. Dude, I got a new TV.
3:08:02it happens so often no it doesn't even happen that often i had the tcl for two years
3:08:07Linus Sebastian:oh wow almost two years it felt a lot shorter than yeah dude is that much better
3:08:17Luke Lafreniere:it doesn't have as many backlight zones by a lot which for a tv that size is a bit of a challenge can you notice it um yes but it has an rgb backlight rgb gamer okay but it actually has benefits for image quality because instead of shining white through an lcd you're shining color so the color volume that it can achieve and the reason i thought of it is because super mario bros is a movie that looks amazing on it also it uses a standard VESA bolt pattern so I can actually put it on like a standard wall mount and I can bring it a little closer so my 116 inch tv can be closer to the actual viewing size of the 120 inch projector that I used to have mounted right to the wall so dude uh yeah I I would actually seriously rather watch it at home um sweet heck yeah oh unique username says you've already talked about okay well it's actually installed now we installed it or not installed we opened it on monday i haven't installed it yet so the video of us like opening it and trying it is in the works and then uh we're actually gonna throw the full gamut of labs testing at it and do like an installation vlog and that'll be like a second video because it's really expensive okay so i'm not gonna play it
3:09:37Linus Sebastian:because even though it's a trailer we get copyright strikes for trailers all the time okay that looks like it's what it's called 13 hours ago from ign it's probably real oh yeah cool official title
3:09:49Luke Lafreniere:announcement nintendo direct the super mario galaxy movie kind of surprised by the title just like you said a long time ago in a super mario galaxy far far away lossless streaming on spotify is coming no but for real this time uh it'll be rolling out to more than 50 markets through october with some already starting to get access now the service is going to be included for premium subscribers it won't be a new subscription tier and it's been a long time coming with rumors starting as early as 2017 coming later this year um oh so you're coming later this year in 2021 and almost ready in may of 2024 discussion question do you care uh yeah a little bit and it just feels
3:10:31Linus Sebastian:like being on whatever it's even called now youtube music is just a more and more sad experience over time really well it used to be google play oh yeah google play was way better and it was actually like a way better app yeah and then they just made it way worse and then i don't think i can't name anything that improved about it since they made the change uh i can name a couple what's improved uh it's way easier to access music videos no sorry since after the change happened what has like okay we have youtube music now yeah we're on here now it's good whatever youtube music is it's better for watching music videos if you care about that no i know oh after we got to so we got a platform cool we are here it's better for finding music videos what has now happened because it's been years uh
3:11:31Linus Sebastian:i can't think of a new feature that came out the only thing i can think of is they do recaps now which they just stole from spotify and i don't care about yeah i skipped them yeah um what needs to improve uh the the user experience of youtube music is just worse in a lot of ways
3:11:49Luke Lafreniere:bury the hatchet with sonos so i can just cast to my sonos speakers please the google play sonos experience was or google play music oh it was so good i would just i would be listening to my headphones as I walked in the door and then I would just have my YouTube or my Google Play Music app open and I would just click cast and then select the speaker and it would just cast
3:12:13Linus Sebastian:and I like it wouldn't even practically skip a beat it was amazing I wish if considering they killed the podcast app if they made podcasts within YouTube music better I know they're there but if they made it better that would be nice sorry handyman I don't think the experience of podcast stuff within YouTube music is all that fantastic.
3:12:31Luke Lafreniere:As for lossless formats, honestly, I mean, I don't know. I don't know if I really care. Pankrat's posted in here. I'm just waiting to see the videos about how people can definitely hear the difference on their, like, Bluetooth earbuds. Yeah. Yeah, me too. I think there's a lot of... It takes a really, really, really fine setup where even, like, the trained ear can, like, really tell the difference between lossless and a pretty decently high quality stream so
3:12:59Linus Sebastian:for me i think having lossless just generally if i know it's real it communicates to me that i'm not getting cheaped out on an audio quality but the thing is that it's not oh i guess yeah not
3:13:09Luke Lafreniere:cheaped out on in terms of like the cost of delivery but like not the lossless master might not even necessarily be the best one that's fair so good luck everyone i mean i've seen a lot of cases it probably is but i don't think i have a particularly fantastic ear but
3:13:30Linus Sebastian:yeah yeah i don't know that's a good point about the master not being protected necessarily better
3:13:37Luke Lafreniere:um flush door handles on evs can fail so china is now banning them uh whoops i just moved a thing with modern evs and cars the style has trended towards flush and sleek door handle designs The problem is that in the event of a power loss, these handles can prevent people from accessing the car. The main concern comes from emergency situations like first responders not being able to assist easily. China is apparently looking at banning these style handles by 2027 for these reasons. And our discussion question here is, what is your favorite breakfast cereal?
3:14:08Linus Sebastian:I thought the handle thing is interesting because some of them you can kind of press in one side and it pops the handle out. Yeah, but it's still powered.
3:14:16Luke Lafreniere:so it requires power to do that because there's an assumption with evs that they are always powered because they don't just run off of like a 12 volt lead acid battery for basic functions like you've got access to a high voltage high amperage battery pack because if you didn't then it would be completely off no one would be operating so you press this isn't it just a lever it's not just a lever you press the side and it depends not all of them are the same so there's ones that when you press it it's like you're you're you're you're opening it or or like the uh the actual retraction like on the uh on the model s it wasn't even a lever if i recall correctly it was like fully motorized that it would come out so it just depends um i don't know i've been partial to mini wheats lately but elijah said i couldn't think of a good question for this since it seems
3:15:05Linus Sebastian:like a no duh moment i don't know last time i had cereal so i don't know um oh yeah i guess
3:15:10Luke Lafreniere:Is this just like too many calories for you now? Too much sugar? I haven't been eating as much cereal lately either. I love cereal. I'm unhappy. We'll get there. Not yet. Yeah. LiDAR can damage your camera sensor. MKBHD shared a video showing his damaged camera sensor from the infrared lasers from LiDAR navigation systems on a car. This is in part due to the class one lasers coming from these sensors, but also due to the focusing effect of the camera's lens. here are some shots of the damage from the lidar sensors that's a bummer naturally the closer the sensor the higher the risk of damage the sensor damaging lasers are in the infrared spectrum which should not pose a threat to your vision as the fluid in your eye absorbs the infrared light before it would damage your retina this is not health advice i'm not a doctor so feel free to keep staring directly into those waymos but be careful with your camera sensor and that's our last topic so why don't we jump into after dark after dark let's do it man this felt like a long wang show already didn't it i think it was about three and a half hours yeah yeah oh all right yeah wow neat because we started like are you mocking mostly on time no i'm agreeing no he's mocking sarcastically he is mocking you see that's what i said that's what i thought very mockable be gone
3:16:38Luke Lafreniere:my goodness hey linus i'm a huge crosscode fan what made you a fan of the game also are you excited for alabaster dawn is that their new game have they have they named it oh what is this two and a half deaction rpg from the creators of crosscode it doesn't have a release date am i
3:16:58Linus Sebastian:supposed to be excited yet i don't think so no to be announced oh alabaster dawn
3:17:07Luke Lafreniere:demo release date demo demo you say radical fish games i mean there's a dude there's like nothing on here um which was on steam i mean i'll obviously play it they did cross code is so they had they had a playable demo at gamescom 2025 okay so i i thought it was like an online demo but yeah i think it's just a playable demo at gamescom sounds great can't wait i will i will okay we always say don't pre-order right but but but i have actually and i there's some there's some precedent for this i so remember when i pre-ordered um bill watterson's weird adult graphic novel thing that was terrible yeah okay and remember do you remember what i said to you though i said no matter how bad it was you're going to buy it anyways i could never pay mr watterson enough for calvin and hobbs and what it meant to me and how much entertainment it has given me over the years he won't take my money in the form of hobbs plushies for my children so if i have to give him 20 bucks or whatever it is for his utterly worthless worthless piece of garbage adult novel thing whatever the crap that was I will do it I will do it happily I'll do it happily I would buy it again I'm not saying a lot because it was bad it was awful truly awful yeah just maybe not awful but just pointless so Radical Fish same book for me I didn't pay enough for CrossCode so I will just buy the new one and if it totally sucks sweaty hairy donkey dick I will still have not paid them enough for CrossCode and I will happily I will happily give them the money make sure your wish listing things on steam too that's really important for creators it is actually super
3:19:21Linus Sebastian:important up next why is it is it just a funding thing nope it's a steam algorithm thing super
3:19:28Luke Lafreniere:super super important because steam doesn't have like an engagement platform yeah sure that's it it's all that matters and it costs nothing hey y 'all last when linus mentioned his daughter starting to model for the p1s what modeling program do you have her using i use inventor at work and and exit school but money money money for a copy for him um i think she's using like a free tier of tinkercad it's whatever they like showed her at the little like maker classes that she goes to is is tinkercad good is something else she should be using i think that's like an open-ish source i can't quite remember but it's pretty good okay better learning solid works future engineer um hey yeah i've been super super impressed with uh her taking initiative on this because so cool yeah and and it's so cool she hasn't always been the most self-motivated uh but she is self-motivated to go and and like fix it when it's not working and to um to learn more about it Like the fact that she's going and learning about filament types and stuff, I'm super impressed by.
3:20:43Because it's not that simple for like, you know, someone who's like still around her first decade.
3:20:51Luke Lafreniere:I'm trying to see if I have any of the stuffed animals. She makes stuffed animals now. That's another thing that she's gotten into. So, Yvonne hasn't done the short circuit on it yet, but she picked up an embroidery machine. And my daughter's been learning how to use that as well. So she's going to be starting to learn both additive manufacturing and some more. I guess it would still be an STL, right? Like an embroidery machine, probably? Is it vectorized, I think? Yeah, I don't know. SVGs and things like that. Think about it like a laser cutter. Embroidery is actually really weird if you're doing CNC embroidery.
3:21:34Luke Lafreniere:it's like stitch types and overlaps and it can get really weird yeah so she's getting into all all kinds of wild stuff these days so cool anyway okay hey lld love the show linus i was wondering if you had any more thoughts on the oslo sleep buds after using them for a moment while my mom and i both got pairs after seeing your review and they've improved i guess sleep um generally i only take those with me on trips um where i still find the uh the the pairing of the airbot airbods airpods a little bit more painless um but if i'm gonna be on like a long flight and i really need to not be disrupted by my uh airpods running out of battery um and i don't mind like kind of setting up because you have to pair to the base station which pairs to your phone it's a whole thing um really good product really cool product uh but i don't use them super regularly i should probably give them another shot with the latest updates at home i haven't used them lately because i haven't done any overseas travel hello linus this is not a question though actually it is uh you talked before that linux linus is perfectly capable of building himself a pc what changed uh you just thought to ask yeah i just i don't know i i summoned the bravery to handle the rejection if he said no and i shot my shot hell yeah and he was super chill and cool about it hell yeah with linus torvalds potentially coming onto the show is there a possibility to get on richard stallman and build him a computer with non-proprietary software we need the stallman build why don't we see how it goes with mr torvalds first and then we can kind of put together a wish list of super cool computer industry luminaries to
3:23:30Linus Sebastian:bring onto the show and build computers with i feel like for stallman if we did that if he was cool with it if if if if um if risk was at a point where it was like legitimate that would be sick
3:23:44Luke Lafreniere:we could i mean we could do a relatively simple build and just put one of those uh risk five motherboards into like a framework or something. Could be neat. Hello, Bob Slob and Knob. Linus, what was it? Hold on, who's who?
3:24:02Luke Lafreniere:I mean, I feel like Bob is the only one that's not horrible. I'll take Slob. You'll take Slob. I'll take Knob. You can be Bob. You know you're not the one who takes Knob.
3:24:17Luke Lafreniere:Anywho. slurp Linus what was it like holding a memory module from the Saturn 5 rocket
3:24:27Linus Sebastian:it's after dark shut up I ran out of air
3:24:35Luke Lafreniere:it was like it was like holding history it was really cool it's one of those emotional experiences and normally holding a computer component or whatever is not it's a non-emotional experience but the craftsmanship or should i say crafts womanship because apparently the the woven ones yeah the folks who assembled them were almost exclusively women um on display was it was just so apparent um so it was somewhere in between a cool piece of technology and like literal actual
3:25:09Linus Sebastian:art uh very cool this stuff just just for reference yeah like what the heck is even going on this is like i i don't know some of that era's technology is wild my algorithm delivered me the
3:25:32Luke Lafreniere:virtual uh inertial reference system with the gyroscopes and the oh how how how is this the biggest slide rules i was trying to figure out how slide will worked with my dad the other day he learned about them in school never know how to figure it out uh anyway luke you spoke a bit about classic battlefield last week i also miss maps like battle of britain filling up a bomber with six players. Also, did you ever play Battlefield Vietnam? Yeah, I think I played pretty much all of the old Battlefields. I didn't know they did a Battlefield Vietnam. That's a weird war to make a video game about. Wasn't that?
3:26:07Linus Sebastian:I thought that might have been an expansion. The problem with a game is
3:26:10Luke Lafreniere:that you just can't win. Rough. Oh, yeah, yeah. Is this a full game? I remember this, actually. I think it was an expansion. No, it's a full game. Shut up. Developed by Digital Illusions Canada. I know I played it but I thought it was maybe by Canadian standards you know the Vietnam War wasn't that bad
3:26:35Linus Sebastian:oh yeah that was like
3:26:36Luke Lafreniere:Tuesday
3:26:39Linus Sebastian:I don't think we wrote any conventions that time so like
3:26:42Luke Lafreniere:we didn't make the
3:26:45Linus Sebastian:chemicals exactly
3:26:48Luke Lafreniere:maybe they learned from us apparently it was the first with helicopters we have ideas
3:26:55Linus Sebastian:what if you put what if you put the gas in the cans instead of helicopters blades they're actually blades just more on the bottom chainsaws i'm already hiccuping so much my god i'm sorry but yeah no i i love battlefield games i think i don't think it's just battlefield the problem i i think triple triple a as a whole kind of lost the plot there for a long time forgetting that games needed to be fun. They focused on graphics. They focused on just a wide variety of things that weren't just like the game being good and fun. And it seems like we might maybe, in some cases, be coming back to that, which is cool.
3:27:43Linus Sebastian:Hopefully, the next GTA is good. Hopefully, the next Battlefield is good. And hopefully, we keep going from there. But we'll see. I can't even talk.
3:27:53Luke Lafreniere:heller lemus watched the chromebook video and was wondering what the most awkward situation you were in when in public i'm sure lots of recognition happens at best buy oh man awkward um man i can't i don't even know if i can remember anymore every time it's like a what was the most x that you y i have such a hard time like never going to be accurate it's just gonna be whatever one you remember oh yeah the worst one you remember that moment like it man i'm like awkward all the time i i had i had an employee uh come and say bye to me recently because it was their last day and just to shake hands and i was and i was like i said something like completely wrong i oh yeah i remember what i said i remember what i said I said welcome because I just my brain completely the opposite what I meant to say was thanks for everything and I said welcome like I've never met them they worked here over two years I completely knew who they were and I knew they were coming because I knew that they had tendered their resignation a little while ago and I was just like I was like welcome and then as i tried to recover i made it like way worse um yeah so that wasn't in public but it sucked that's pretty epic yeah i i've just dude i'm when i'm on the spot i just can say just like the dumbest stuff like i i think i've told the story about the time the border guards asked me where i was going and i said the wrong place just because i was tense not because i was doing anything illicit.
3:29:40Luke Lafreniere:Where are you off to? Crimes? Last one I got for you today. Oh, you missed the Chromebook one. Did you skip that one? I thought that was it. Oh wait, that was it. Yep, good job. Was that it? Okay, thank God. Would be awesome to know what the pool of mystery items is. I would grab a mystery hoodie if that was the case. Also, I'm colorblind. What color is iron? Cargo pants. Oh, iron is not the ones I'm wearing. I'm wearing the blue ones. Gray. yeah so they're not they're what you see yeah uh yeah yeah yeah you should yeah you should be able to handle it um pool of mystery items yeah but that's the point of mystery items is that they're
3:30:18Linus Sebastian:kind of whatever they are and that's why they're cheaper would make it really tedious because it
3:30:21Luke Lafreniere:like constantly changes yeah so so it's supposed to be a low-cost way of liquidating stuff that we need to liquidate for whatever reason and actual last one howdy lld have you guys heard about the DDoS attacks happening to Fafrever? Fafrever. Fafrever. That's hard. Supreme Commander. Oh, the new one, yeah? No. No? The old one. The old one? Forged Alliance Forever. It's a community project. The fact that someone's attacking this is... Oh, damn. Whoever's attacking this is a butthole. They are asking for help defending. Like a sphincter. Tight. No. No. Damn. And dirty. No. Yeah. The continuous unwashed sphincter.
3:31:06Luke Lafreniere:It leaks. The continuation of FA forever on their form. Yeah, I hadn't heard about the DDoS attacks. That's super uncool. And I don't even know how we would begin to. What do they want? They want help defending DDoS attacks.
3:31:23Linus Sebastian:But like, I don't know anything about their infra. Does someone have a link to them talking about this or something?
3:31:30Luke Lafreniere:FA forever. FA forever.
3:31:33Linus Sebastian:FA forever Dan for crying out loud why is this happening it's just Forge Alliance forever recompense for XE I guess oh my goodness no I mean my hiccups not you saying it weirdly they need contributors
3:31:50Luke Lafreniere:with solid software development background to help address the latest attack vectors
3:31:59yeah
3:31:59Luke Lafreniere:this is such a bummer to read the past decade of the internet, the past decade, the internet has changed significantly. In my personal view, the internet used to be more innocent as a small open source service provider, such as FA forever. It was unthinkable that we would be the target of malicious actors. Yep. And because of that, the infrastructure was never designed to be resilient. Of course, their basic authentication and authorization checks, but in general, our implementation assumed the user consuming the service acted in good faith.
3:32:28Yeah.
3:32:29Linus Sebastian:A lot of the internet kind of just sucks now.
3:32:34man
3:32:38Luke Lafreniere:this is so not cool
3:32:44Luke Lafreniere:unfortunately i don't have any development help to offer but what i do have is a farewell for all of you we'll see you again next week same bad time same bad channel this is not the show you're looking for anymore tonight Bye! Oota Boota mind trick.
3:33:10Linus Sebastian:I'm gonna crash so hard. Yikes. I'm sorry it was such a long show.
