In short

Topic

  1. Sony’s legal fight over digital game ownership: PlayStation argues that “buying” digital games is actually licensing access, not ownership, in response to a California 2025 digital goods class action lawsuit. The hosts discuss what “reasonable customers” would understand and whether terms-of-service disclosures are enough.
  2. A Taiwan privacy/relationship case: a man used a robot vacuum camera to record his wife’s affair and won a divorce settlement, but was later sentenced for illegal recording after a countersuit.
  3. GoPro acquisition and Markiplier controversy: GoPro is reportedly being bought by Starman Optical; the hosts discuss GoPro’s financial troubles, the national-security framing, and a controversy involving YouTuber Markiplier buying GoPro shares and allegedly not disclosing the investment properly in videos.

Guest backgrounds No guests are named in the provided transcript. The episode appears to be hosted by the WAN Show hosts only.

Key claims and notable examples

Sony lawsuit

Plaintiffs allege PlayStation fails to clearly state that “buy now” purchases are revocable licenses. Sony counters that the TOS/license agreement already makes this clear and that digital ownership is impossible. Sony’s argument includes an example: two plaintiffs bought “Resident Evil” (the transcript says “Requiem”) 11 days apart; Sony claims the second buyer couldn’t have “owned” it if the first buyer did, implying licensing/ownership mechanics.

Robot vacuum case (Taiwan)

A husband discovered evidence via CCTV, then used the vacuum’s speaker/camera to capture footage. He sought about $63,000 but received about $19,000; the wife countersued for illegal recording. Court sentenced him to 5 months and a $4,700 fine. Hosts debate whether recording “the entire thing” was excessive and how consent/expectations of privacy apply.

GoPro/Markiplier

GoPro down ~96% pre-merger; unprofitable for four years; competition from Chinese action camera makers. Markiplier is said to have become the largest investor (~8.5%) after buying shares in July; hosts discuss potential insider-trading implications and whether he disclosed investment vs sponsorship in video descriptions.

0:00Hey!

0:00Luke Lafreniere:Happy Friday and welcome to the WAN Show! We've got a... There's so much to talk about this week. There's genuinely a lot. Okay, so PlayStation wants to prove in court that you don't own your digital games. We're gonna fight. This has huge... We are? Yep. You and me? No. Oh, that makes way more sense. This has huge implications way beyond the ownership of mere video games. there was a massive multi-terabyte Steam leak. What else we got? I think we could each pick three this week. There's the GoPro thing which like

0:39Linus Sebastian:is blowing up the internet right now. Yeah. I mean we've already talked about that. YouTube redefined views. Yeah. Okay. You pick two more. There's so much. SteamDB was acquired by Nexus Mods. That's actually like yeah most people that I know are not stoked about that we'll see how that goes toward the bottom, toward the bottom, another big one oh yeah DLSS 5 now working on all RTX GPUs DLSS 5 working on a 2000 series is gonna be a hoot

1:11Luke Lafreniere:okay so stick around yeah

1:38Luke Lafreniere:the show is brought to you today by odoo vessi motion gray and xsplit along with our rap partner dbrand our laptop partner dell and our chair partner razer let's jump right into the big news from Sony. You do not own your games, and frankly, you should have known better, honestly, because while it does say buy, and we do take your money, actually, you just should have known. Sony has made an official response to the class action lawsuit brought against it regarding its failure to comply with California's 2025 digital goods law. This says, for context, feel free to skip over here just in case. Let's do the context.

2:23Luke Lafreniere:In mid-June, a group of gamers filed a class action lawsuit against Sony, alleging that the company fails to state in plain language that buying or purchasing a digital good actually means licensing it. The gamers argue that despite the store using terms like buy now and confirm purchase, Sony is only granting a limited access license that can be revoked at any time. As reported by Gamefile, Sony's counter-argument to the lawsuit is that disclosures around digital purchases on PlayStation are already clearly defined in the TOS and licensing agreement, stating that reasonable customers would not be misled into believing they own the games they purchase.

3:11Luke Lafreniere:in addition sony's council writes that digital ownership would be impossible and that the plaintiffs already know this hold on hold on i'm not done yet he can't he can't he can't help it i can i can actually i can actually feel the heat like i could probably warm my hands off of his anger right now i'm gonna make you contain it a little bit longer though you're turning red you you would like him when he's angry i'll let him do it in a minute he's gonna unload he's gonna unleash it's gonna be great arguing that two of the gamers bought resident evil requiem 11 days apart and if the first guy actually owned it the second one couldn't have full quote because it's genuinely insane plaintiff edward haycock would not have been able to obtain the game resident evil requiem on february 24th 2026 for 69.99 from the playstation store after plaintiff jason mendoza had obtained resident evil requiem on february 14th 2026 because mr mendoza not sony would have owned it then

4:21Luke Lafreniere:so wait there's only one of the game and if you buy it that you have you have bought the single so sony is arguing that in order to buy a game you have to actually buy like the full ip seems like it you have to what you have to buy the studio okay go uh there's there's honestly

4:43Linus Sebastian:a lot of things one one the first one that i want to start with and this is the most like lukewarm i feel like basically everybody agrees with it that's gonna watch this argument so whatever but the whole idea of like they should have known therefore it is okay can backfire so hard. Yeah. A Sony should know better than to use an argument like that. And it goes towards, you know, the whole ad blockers piracy thing. They should have known that ad blockers were freely available and almost everyone runs them and therefore you cannot expect to ever run an ad on anything on the internet. They should have known that pirating video games has been a thing for many, many years, is readily available to basically everyone.

5:28Linus Sebastian:And in a lot of ways, doesn't feel like you're super doing something bad these days they're not as uh nefarious feeling as they used to be therefore i mean you should just expect people to pirate things and and you should you should understand that that is an unavoidable problem i don't know if those parallels are quite parallel but they're saying they're saying i see the vibes you're throwing down though yeah they're not exactly parallel but like the the idea that someone should make an assumption that the thing that you're telling them is true,

6:01Luke Lafreniere:buying, purchasing. Or that the thing you're telling them is not true is more like. Because you're telling them that they're buying it through that button that says buy now, but they should have known you didn't mean it.

6:11Linus Sebastian:Right, no, yes, yes, yes, correct. Yeah, I said it wrong.

6:14Luke Lafreniere:I actually saw a really funny neurodivergent meme that was basically just like, as a neurodivergent person, every time someone tells me, well obviously you should have known that they weren't being literal it's like how yeah but

6:31Linus Sebastian:actually though and like in this case they they were literal multiple times yeah so like i no i actually just starkly disagree we're jumping on to the next one now starkly disagree that people that you can assume that people would know that they don't own this thing they just bought i also

6:48Luke Lafreniere:i also feel like the it's in the tos defense has been tested before like am i am i forgetting this because I'm pretty sure everyone knows those don't hold up. I'm pretty sure that just because it's in the terms of service that, oh, oh, yeah, right. See, when I said buy, what I actually meant was you can use it for a little bit as long as I'm okay with it. Like, how can you possibly?

7:16Linus Sebastian:This is kind of my point. Bent Bob in full plane chat said, wait, if I buy a physical game with a code in the box, what happens then?

7:22Luke Lafreniere:It's a license. Well, see, but here's another thing that, again, I don't think Bent Bob is a reasonable person, which is really important. That word reasonable. Did I say I don't think they're a reasonable person? Sorry. I think Bent Bob is a reasonable person. I was like, what? I was trying to say I don't think Bent Bob is an unreasonable person. And that term reasonable person, like, actually matters. Not a legal scholar. I'm trying to get this thing. There you go. You got it. Yeah, okay. Once you pass the pink pillar. um not a legal scholar but from my understanding that term reasonable person it actually has a very strict legal definition and matters a lot and i think bent bob here is being very reasonable and asking well wait no no hold on a second what will when i buy the like physical game like i own it right but actually no they've always been licenses same goes for movies there are certain forms of media for which the license is very difficult, nigh impossible to revoke.

8:28Luke Lafreniere:But technically, you know that thing that comes up when you go to watch a movie, right? That's like, blah, blah, blah, not authorized for public demonstration and not authorized to be copied and blah, blah, blah. Well, that's the licensing agreement. That's the terms of the purchase that you've made. You have not purchased that movie and that's i think the argument that sony's trying to make here that unless you purchase the entire but then they need to be a lot more explicit explicit about it if i

9:00Linus Sebastian:go to steam for example yeah and i go to my purchase history and i look at my invoices it doesn't show oh you bought a license of titanfall 2 for 4.99 on sale it says you bought titanfall 2 for$4.99 on Steam.

9:16Luke Lafreniere:I'm going to double check, but I'm pretty sure it's called Purchase History.

9:19Linus Sebastian:Yeah, that too.

9:20Luke Lafreniere:I'm going to double check. I'm going to double check. Okay, I'm just firing up my Steam interface. Is it under Help? I don't remember. Recent Purchases. Yeah, well, there you go. Recent Purchases. Perfect. Thank you.

9:35Linus Sebastian:There's a Steam support page called Recent Purchases. I don't know if maybe the menu's called something else, but there's at least a Steam support page.

9:41Luke Lafreniere:And don't imagine for a second that Good Guy Valve sells you the game instead of a license. Good Guy Valve 100 % offers you the right to pay for a license to the game. But to me, the question remains, what would a reasonable person think? And I think that any gamer, especially one that's old enough to remember buying physical games, when the license was not easily revoked, right? would have the understanding very reasonably that once they have given the money, that's theirs in perpetuity completely to do with what they want pretty much, right? That I could lend it. I could sell it within the confines of what I'm licensed to do.

10:33Luke Lafreniere:Like I always found it funny when I was a kid because I just didn't really understand why that had to be in there. but how many end user license agreements have that they the product can't be used for terrorism for instance like like yeah i'm gonna use winzip for terrorism yeah i i guess you could yeah um warcraft 3 i promise not to use it for terrorism yeah warcraft 3 had a chat room so yeah okay you can find a way that's that's another that's another this was a pre-show topic but that's

11:06Linus Sebastian:another Instagram account, I guess. How can this be used for terrorism? Let's, let's, you know what, let's avoid that one. Let's avoid that one. It's just, I don't know. This whole argument is crap. I think it's almost the, I just think it's a joke. I don't know. I also don't know necessarily what to do about it. I was driving here thinking about titles and I knew this was going to be in the doc and i was i was trying to think about the title from last week and i was like okay what if we did like what do you what do you do about this whole situation it's like i don't know i don't

11:42Luke Lafreniere:know i mean right to representatives to their credit edward haycock and jason mendoza are doing something okay they're taking sony to court over it yeah that's pretty cool thank you yeah we could be appreciative of the people that are fighting this fight because i i alluded to this earlier sorry i alluded to this earlier but if sony wins this oh we're cooked like you you effectively don't own anything that was licensed and it's it's like it's formalized now like it The fact that you already didn't, it matters. But formalizing this again now more recently matters more, if that makes sense. This would leave zero ambiguity around the potential for a company to just pretty much on a whim say, hey, not yours anymore.

12:50Luke Lafreniere:Speaking of companies that on a whim decided you didn't own things anymore. Remember how I went off on TeamViewer, kicking me off of my TeamViewer 12 perpetual license? So they removed anywhere to download it from their website officially, if I recall correctly, or it's like really, really hard to find now. It still works. I went to use it the other day and I was like, oh, my TeamViewer 12. In spite of what they said actually still works.

13:14Linus Sebastian:Massive security vulnerabilities?

13:15Luke Lafreniere:I have no idea.

13:16Linus Sebastian:But I was just like, I was curious. There is, okay, this is super. So they didn't actually kick me. This is super off topic. we should probably come back to the topic but i was talking to someone the other day about how uh they they work with servers i'm not gonna get very specific but they work with servers and they found uh a vulnerability where one of their servers was running a crypto miner and they didn't know and when they were investigating to figure out like what happened how did this get here how long has it been running all that kind of stuff there was a lot of fingerprints of ai stuff all over it and you know how for a long time there's been like this has probably already been a thing which was another interesting idea to me you know for a long time there's been like these crawling bots that just search the internet and like poke for vulnerabilities all over the place for a long time my assumption was the primary there's lots of different goals but the primary goals of those was like i don't know a botnet maybe you get in something interesting and you grab some credentials or do whatever but for most computers you get into it's just gonna be botnet kind of stuff um but the the mass installation of temporary crypto miners all over the place is also interesting interesting time because profitability is really low but who cares if it's not your

14:29Luke Lafreniere:hardware not your power um and at some point it might go up yep that too not not not financial

14:36Linus Sebastian:advice it's also like as little uses crypto has been found for crypto it has consistently been used in places under siege. It was used largely at the beginning. I don't know if it still is, but largely at the beginning of the invasion of Ukraine, and it's being used in Iran right now. Which is interesting. Anyways, back to video games. Hold on.

14:59Luke Lafreniere:Andre B says, I mean, while we're at it, what would stop companies from selling you a license to a car rather than selling you a car? They just revoke your ability to have the car after X years, so you have to upgrade. Yeah, the difference is they call it a lease. like it i don't even object to them selling licenses to a game call it that just call it that because right now you're calling it buy you're calling it purchase it feels like the red bull

15:25Linus Sebastian:thing but like actually i believe all of the people that believed the thing yeah because with red bull i said red bull gives you wings and some guy was like oh i actually thought it was going to give me wings and then red bull got sued and they had to change their slogan i thought it was a bit of an urban myth i thought it was a little different than that i'll look it up okay yeah but even that one i remember being like i mean i was a kid when that happened and i was like that's stupid that guy's stupid i this this is silly in this case no i actually think there is a very reasonable assumption that i buy this thing and i own it and no i don't own um i guess it's like how revocable is the license i guess because you're right i don't own the ip of the thing but i own the right to this being able to access and play this thing moving forward

16:19Luke Lafreniere:ah okay um no the complaint was actually that it uh doesn't actually provide like a performance benefit necessarily. Despite the lack of any reported scientific support for a claim that Red Bull provides more benefit to consumers than a caffeine tablet or a cup of coffee, defendants continue to market the product as a superior source of energy worthy of a premium price, says the court filing. Okay, so it's not the wings. No, it's not the wings. That's internet legend. It's more just that they were making specific claims with respect to the performance enhancement of it that were not backed up by any kind of research or evidence.

16:58Luke Lafreniere:And that seems fair enough. That's fair enough, yeah. I mean, it's just like the McDonald's hot coffee thing. It turns out that actually was pretty reasonable, because it was like way too hot. Like, it wasn't just a dumb-dumb spilled coffee on themselves. It was like way, way, way, way, way too hot and dangerous. I was like, okay, alright, alright, alright, alright. I'm not saying that the legal system is perfect, but it's slightly less stupid than internet legend would have us believe.

17:26Linus Sebastian:yeah like i i've there's been a couple times where i've like bought a movie off of youtube or something like that um but i don't treat those types of things as permanent copies the only reason why i do that though is because i've heard some of these

17:46Luke Lafreniere:things yeah i've had stuff revoked from libraries yeah before so i treat anything

17:50Linus Sebastian:but the vast majority of people in my life have never heard of any of that stuff no and engage with these things as permanent purchases.

Read the full transcript

17:57Luke Lafreniere:And you see it. I mean, it'll be so easy to find evidence of reasonable people thinking that they own the things they buy because of the just wave of outrage that occurs every time one of these library restrictions or library purchase revocations happens. I mean, even stuff that to me is, maybe just because I have a technical understanding of how the platform works, there's stuff that's more obvious to me. like netflix i buy the subscription to netflix it's all you can eat of the entire platform sometimes that platform changes that's just that's pretty obvious that i'm licensing the platform not the individual movies but you look at you look at how upset people go and they go i paid for netflix where's that content i saw last month it's not here anymore and again i don't think they're being completely unreasonable i just mean that they are they're less reasonable than the people who buy something on you know on youtube rent a movie on or not rent buy a movie on youtube or buy a song on itunes or whatever thinking that they own that thing anyway i think a big difference there

19:03Linus Sebastian:is that you're not buying netflix you are subscribing to netflix yeah but even then people

19:09Luke Lafreniere:get mad about it all right why don't we jump into another topic here you want to pick one this one's kind of funny oh i highlighted it it's the doc is so long i have no idea where you're at

19:21Linus Sebastian:that's what she said it's actually not showing any highlighted text really yeah oh go out oh there we go yeah the one with the highlighting it wasn't before it was probably i swear uh it might have been lagging uh whoa a man uses robot vacuum to covertly record his wife's affair he wins a divorce settlement but gets sentenced to prison for making an illegal recording uh the husband lands behind bars after countersuit over privacy rights which would not happen everywhere it depends on if it depends single or dual consent yeah like

19:54Luke Lafreniere:here i think it's single party consent for recording conversations but i think there's some nuance around expectations of privacy okay so it really depends um but anyway a taiwanese

20:07Linus Sebastian:man is going to prison after recording his wife having the affair uh it all started on a vacation in 2023 when the husband discovered a used toothbrush in the bathroom of their holiday home oh wow bougie uh he became suspicious and checked the cctv footage to find a strange man had driven his wife home a few months later the husband randomly opened an app to contact his wife through the vacuum speaker feature that's a thing okay uh call them uh but stumbled onto live footage from the vacuum's cameras showing his wife in bed with the man he saw on the ctv footage months earlier really the the the vacuum was just looking right there well no they have um

20:50Luke Lafreniere:they have like a lot of them have like fisheye type lenses and if they're just happen to be in

20:55Linus Sebastian:the room i guess happen to be in the room sure um you recorded the entire thing as evidence and brought a suit against her in taiwan cheating isn't a criminal offense but infringing on someone's martial rights marital marital rights yeah sure i was like that's weird uh is what i'm here for your side extra uh it's grounds for financial compensation um it's a breach of contract the marital contract that makes sense the husband initially tried to get the equivalent of 63 000 us dollars only ended up winning 19 000 but it doesn't stop there because recording someone without their consent is illegal in Taiwan and the wife countersuit her husband for this exact violation while the husband argued that the video was admitted as evidence so it wasn't illegal it was still obtained illegally and the courts ruled in favor of the wife the judge sentenced him to five months in prison and he was fined $4 ,700 for the offense so

21:57Luke Lafreniere:this this is man this one is fraught with gray areas. I think that on this show, we are pretty aligned that surveillance state bad.

22:10Linus Sebastian:Yeah. I think that we are pretty aligned

22:18Luke Lafreniere:that covertly recording an intimate partner is creepo behavior. Big time. But she was banging someone else, which is bad.

22:34Luke Lafreniere:um i feel like okay let's let's and the covert recording was using a camera that was installed in the place that it was installed knowingly by both parties functioning as intended yeah knowingly by both parties that to me is the big one the fact that it was there at all and everybody new to me is where the gray area kind of becomes pretty gray someone said adultery is illegal isn't it we're not talking about the states yeah we're trying what Taiwan and we're also i think we're just kind of like talking in general i'm not even nothing that i said just now was

23:13Linus Sebastian:necessarily legal terms yeah it was all just no that's a flow plane comment i know i know something else oh um yeah it's it's interesting because like if

23:28what do you what do you do

23:35Linus Sebastian:because because i well yeah i'm thinking like if you if you reverse the roles yeah reverse the general roles here so there's a higher likeliness for being afraid of the violent reactions of the other person so say you're there in person you might want to snap a picture and then run so that you can get authorities involved and get things handled but now you go to jail for five months and like are we are we like and if he didn't have the recording he wouldn't have been

24:08Luke Lafreniere:able to prove it this is my point and but that's his point too it's like okay you admitted it as evidence so clearly like you clearly we all agree i needed it if he didn't do any form of recording

24:20Linus Sebastian:then what's he gonna do ask for permission he said she said yeah yeah yeah say over the speaker please check your phone by the way are you chill if i record this

24:33Luke Lafreniere:just over the vacuum i get it he's way better than me but uh i still find this pretty upsetting oh man like at that point what do we put the robot on a chair in the corner I just I'm trying to figure out sort of what the I'm trying to I'm trying to figure out what he or I think your point is really good what if this was reversed what if it was a she like let's let's let's not worry too much about who was the guy

25:01Linus Sebastian:who was the girl because I mean if you look at a lot of media movies and whatnot sure the response is to barge in the room and get angry yeah but the response is often the guy barging into the

25:12Luke Lafreniere:room and getting angry and that's also portrayal in the media i mean it's not it's not that black and white reality of this situation like i think there's a not i think there's a non-zero number of people who could literally be standing with the key in their hand hearing what's going on inside

25:29Linus Sebastian:and not be able to turn that key and see it no i think that's legitimately probably most like i suspect there's i mean it's fight or flight at that point right because so what's he what's what

25:38Luke Lafreniere:was he supposed to do especially if he and and remember too we're taking his word for it that he came across it right that he happened that he wasn't like checking the camera all the time which man i can tell you i don't i don't check in on the cameras at my house very often and i have never checked in on a camera that was in a bedroom for any reason you know one line that does throw me though yeah in quotes he recorded the entire thing as evidence

26:16Linus Sebastian:i genuinely wonder how much that plays into it the entire thing did you need to record the entire

26:22Luke Lafreniere:thing i mean you got to be sure right like if they finish if they don't finish is it cheating Yeah

26:34Linus Sebastian:Yeah I think so I don't think you can I don't think you can do like a soaking argument They didn't finish defense Well you see

26:42Luke Lafreniere:It was actually just really bad It was just some light edging

26:48Linus Sebastian:That was pre That was pre

26:50Luke Lafreniere:It was

26:53Luke Lafreniere:There may have been seminal fluid but no live sperm was in there.

27:03Linus Sebastian:Does that mean if you're snipped, it's just not... Interesting. It's not cheating. You just never have sex again. Oh my God. But yeah, I do wonder like... John, BR, this has not been a technology show for years. Like five, yeah, yeah. Five months in prison and almost 5K when the entire divorce settlement only ended up being 19k really makes me wonder like oh he's at the short end of the stick is it because it was the entire thing that's rough or the short stick in the end or wait oh he's in prison he didn't get that didn't get that well he might in prison maybe i'm not digging that no sorry can't resist no he doesn't want to time stamp this you must no key but yeah specifically calling out entire makes me think maybe it was like deemed as excessive um i don't see how it would i mean look i don't know i have no idea i don't

28:04Luke Lafreniere:operate within any legal let alone one apparatus let alone even reside exactly and that has notably different structure than ours oh man i gotta i i gotta sorry i love this i on tom's

28:21Linus Sebastian:I'm looking at the title and then you just see the like subtitle.

28:28Luke Lafreniere:I enjoy that. Man, I got to say at the, the gall of her counter suing. Wow. Like if like, let's say, let's say I had an affair and I got busted because Yvonne, you know, found something on the robot cameras. And let's say I knew that like, she wasn't supposed to be looking at that. going after her for doing what she had to do to catch me when I when I was doing something bad just feels like the most broken like personality disorder type of response but then the flip side of it is you know if she were to be checking in on me and like I wasn't doing anything like I I'd be I'd be super upset about that because why don't you trust me but then like you don't get to be like why don't you trust me when you weren't trustworthy you know what I mean

29:23Linus Sebastian:I have had a situation and this this wasn't a trust problem I don't think but I have had a situation where everyone was trying to get in contact with me and I wasn't responding uh I think I was like I I'm assuming the era that this happened I was in like a Tarkov match and was just like focused and didn't notice the messages yeah he's actually very hard to get in touch with

29:45Luke Lafreniere:sometimes i'll ping him on like three four different platforms yeah and sometimes not hear back so she got on the robot robot sometimes i've had to call emma before that's true i think it's

29:58Linus Sebastian:been a bit but that is true um but yeah she got on the robot vacuum and in order to call emma i

30:03Luke Lafreniere:had to call yvonne because i didn't have her number because why would i have luth girlfriend's number. That's fair. He doesn't even have a chair in the corner of his room.

30:12Linus Sebastian:That's also true.

30:16Linus Sebastian:Gotta get dressed standing up. Okay. She ran the robot vacuum into my chair. That's so funny. So it wasn't like it wasn't like a she was just trying to be like hey! And then I looked down at it. She put a full navi on you. I looked down at it and the camera's on and it just starts like she's like shaking it trying to get my attention because it didn't i don't think it had speaker out nice i think it had speaker in you could hear but i don't i don't think you could talk out from it but yeah she rammed my chair and that made me like jump really hard because i thought i was home alone and like birds are definitely not big enough to do that um and yeah i got my attention but a little little different yeah so if you like man i'm trying to

31:03Luke Lafreniere:like i'm trying to i i don't know i just i can't wrap my brain around someone who has the gall

31:08Linus Sebastian:to turn around and go how dare you catch me no i i do agree i i have i am looking more into this um and the like entire thing actually keeps going so it wasn't just uh Where are the notes on this? Here we go. Yeah. The footage from the robot vacuum's camera showed the wife changing her clothes, getting into bed with the same person he had previously identified, and then after all that was done, walking around the house naked while the other man comfortably sank into their sofa. So this wasn't like...

31:45Luke Lafreniere:Clearly this was a high degree of comfort, ongoing thing. Well, that for a while. So maybe that figured into it. Maybe it did. Because then she couldn't make the argument it was a one-time thing. So recording the whole thing may have been very necessary. And that's the other tough part.

31:59Linus Sebastian:It's like, I'm sitting here thinking, is it excessive? But in the moment, I could understand feeling like you need to get everything you can. I could see it either way.

32:06Luke Lafreniere:I could see not being able to open the lock. I could see not being able to look away. Yeah. In which case, the robot, was it on a chair in the corner? I'm just asking questions. I kind of wonder, like, again, back to the, like, we had no way of knowing. this was this was a recording that i didn't know about like the with the vacuum following them

32:27Linus Sebastian:around like i yeah the sinking into the sofa thing is is interesting unless the sofa is like in the same room like is this like a loft type okay here's a question would you pay would you

32:43Luke Lafreniere:pay a 4700 fine and go to jail for five months to yeah find out and end a relationship where they're cheating yeah okay well then maybe it's an okay deal for him yeah i think it's stupid that he had to go to jail i think if he had been fined that's fine but i think going to jail for this is ridiculous i kind of agree like because not just that like he's got a criminal record now like come on that is insane i didn't really think about that yeah and your criminal record like i remember having this conversation with a border guard once don't ask me why um but they told me that smuggling firecrackers over the border.

33:19Luke Lafreniere:It doesn't like, it doesn't go down as sneaking firecrackers for your little brother's birthday. It goes down as smuggling explosives over an international border. And I was like, Oh, that's really interesting. What a conversation we're having. That's unrelated to any of the circumstances right now. And, um, in the same way, like his criminal record is going to say like covertly recording someone which maybe they'll ask and you can be like well it was actually this and i was like pretty you know justified it wasn't something that i set out to do but i like kind of had to um but maybe they just don't maybe they just put his resume at the bottom

34:02Linus Sebastian:of the pile that sucks what a stupid reason to be overlooked especially to in in today's economy now I don't know what the job market is like in Taiwan, but if it's anything, even remotely what it's like in, in North America, um, job market bad for almost every industry, not technically every industry, but almost every, especially if you're in Canada.

34:26Luke Lafreniere:I don't know, man. I'm just trying to think of like, it's so hard to put myself in the, in the, in the mindset of someone in like a suspicious relationship because I do peek in on Yvonne on the cameras from time to time but I do it in like in like a teasy way like I'll be like hi I miss you and I'll send like a really creepily like zoomed up shot of the back of her head sitting at her computer just wanted to see you and like in the context of our relationship I promise you

34:59Linus Sebastian:I promise you it's not

35:00Luke Lafreniere:it's like not weird and not creepy we both have each other's phone pins and use each other's phones interchangeably like my battery is almost dead oh take mine i'm heading home anyway i'll take yours i'll charge it i'll use it when i get there like it it really doesn't matter um but like if i was in like a suspicious mindset would i would i be willing to like look at the cameras for that i don't know if i could i i think i'd be i think i i might be the guy with the key in hand i don't know if i could i feel like i'm usually pretty good at knowing what i would do

35:45Linus Sebastian:in scenarios i think it's impossible to know until you're in i think it's said scenario right but i think i've usually guessed pretty appropriately and i would want to confirm and then I would want to leave fast, even if it's my place. Would you confirm in person

36:05Luke Lafreniere:or if there happened to be a camera?

36:07Linus Sebastian:I see. Would you just take the convenient approach? Well, I'd want evidence too.

36:12Luke Lafreniere:But I would never, okay, here's a line. Like every camera in our house, Yvonne knows about and helped me select the locations for. And they're very obvious and they do like the blue thingy. Yep. I leave all the lights on. Yeah. um then they're not in any areas where you would have an expectation of perfect privacy like bathroom bedrooms no bedrooms um in fact the vast majority of them are just pointed at entrances and hallways with the idea being that you know in the event of like a theft or something like that or the way we end up using it more than that is like when did i last have my keys it's like finding things that we've misplaced a lot of people use them for pets but like okay, would you, oh man, here, oh man, we've got a whole other level.

36:56Luke Lafreniere:Okay. What if they installed the camera and you had access to it and they knew they gave you access to the camera for some reason? Would you, do you think there's any difference between a camera that you both agreed would be installed in? Like you installed it and you're accessing it versus like they installed this camera for the dog. They put like a dog camera in. Would you just completely guilt-free if they were just like on the couch sinking into it in a relaxed naked state with someone would you just guilt-free go into the dog camera that they know they're right in front of like is that where's the where are the freaking lines here people yeah i mean charge nuclei says haha doggy style this is

37:46Linus Sebastian:sometimes you just gotta turn the brain off

37:53Linus Sebastian:oh my goodness um I don't know I have

38:03Linus Sebastian:fairly like I don't know I would be okay with that and one of the reasons why I would be okay with that is because I know Emma would be very okay with that. If I did something, it's scorched earth and death and I have understood that and that is okay.

38:23Luke Lafreniere:Oh, so you guys just have an understanding that there is no expectation of snuckery around and

38:32Linus Sebastian:if something goes down you're forfeiting your everything basically. And it's like, alright. Interesting.

38:39Luke Lafreniere:okay but then i man see this is such a funny thing but that's like i don't know where the

38:45Linus Sebastian:law is on that like in regards to our relationship i you know i would not to be clear but if i was going to i would expect that if she knew that she would go to the ends of the earth to find out verify yep i don't think i don't think she's very suspicious of me doing anything like that to be You haven't cooked chicken for anyone, so it should be fine. And I stay away from that. I was very careful.

39:14Luke Lafreniere:You can't cook chicken for people and not expect it to go all the way. It's a 100 % success recipe. So he's got to keep that power under control.

39:21Linus Sebastian:Maybe she checks my credit card statement for chicken purchases. I mean, the chicken's fine.

39:29Luke Lafreniere:As long as you don't get all the spices and everything, then it's probably okay. Then you're just proteining to make big muscles. which she can enjoy too yeah yeah you can both enjoy them more than me really yeah see really it's for her all the chicken yeah so there's there's the there's the pre-relationship

39:50Linus Sebastian:chicken which really gets everything going right and then there's the long-term chicken right yeah

39:54Luke Lafreniere:which sure it's a little blander but you know yeah it's uh but it sustains you fuels the anyways uh

40:01Linus Sebastian:yeah no she i mean she's made it very clear that like if there was if there was reasonable strong suspicion yeah she's gonna do what she needs to do to verify and then it's

40:11Luke Lafreniere:scorched earth from there and at the end of the day like what I would just take the same what it comes down to is what your boundaries are like I I knew when I said the thing where I'll I'll peer in on the cameras with Yvonne I knew that there were gonna be people for whom that's like very triggering and like to them that's like red flag red flag red flag and like but in the context of our I don't think yours is lack of trust. No, it's not. And she is allowed to do the exact same things. We both have all the credentials to every camera that any one of us would ever be near. And it is not an important thing to us.

40:46Luke Lafreniere:I think it's like the phone thing. I mean, you've talked about that. I don't know. Yeah, that's like the more boomer I get, the more I realize that sharing your phone pin is kind of like how our parents shared an email address. Like, too f***ing crazy, right? And in the same way, I feel like younger people are looking at the way Yvonne and I will just share phone pins or use the same phone. And, like, that's f***ing crazy.

41:13Linus Sebastian:Like, I don't know hers, but only due to being forgetful. She's told it to me a bunch of times. I just keep forgetting. And then I think she knows mine. I've told her mine. She just might have forgot as well. I don't know. But I don't care. I have a phone. I don't need to use her phone. And, like, I don't know. Maybe she doesn't have chess installed. What am I going to do? I don't know. I know she doesn't have all the infinite scrolling apps uninstalled. So there's multiple downsides here. But yeah, the email thing, I just always thought that was messy. Yeah. Oh, yeah. And I don't think sharing a phone pin is like messy.

41:55Linus Sebastian:It's like it's a computer. It's a login to a computer. Well, no, it's yeah.

41:58Luke Lafreniere:Whatever. But I think we're pretty much the same generation. right? So I think to us, that boundary makes sense. But no, to a lot of people, your phone is like, you might as well...

42:09Linus Sebastian:In full Boomer fashion, I don't understand. I understand the privacy aspect, but like, I don't care.

42:16Luke Lafreniere:I don't think it's about that. I think it's just like, it's just a boundary thing. It's just like, your phone is your phone. Whereas we grew up with a phone being a shared thing and it wasn't until almost adulthood that a phone became a thing that

42:33Linus Sebastian:belonged only to you i even see it differently and this is still a shared thing like you're talking about and there's a lot more shared versions of these when we were growing up but i see it as a computer because like if if she's borrowing my phone she's probably borrowing it to look something up or do something or take a picture take a picture go online and google

42:52Luke Lafreniere:something or I'm driving and she's messaging somebody on my behalf and it's yes a lot easier if it comes from my phone and then it's not confusing for anybody for sure and and maybe

43:02Linus Sebastian:you know adjust the maps or do something I'm thinking usually when something like that happens I'm handing it to her unlocked because as I hand her the phone I'm just thumbing the fingerprint but I'm just doing that to make it easier I think I think she knows the code I mean I bet you know of the code oh it's really it's not the work one no i know that's so dumb

43:37Luke Lafreniere:so while i am saying that you know i have no problem being at a level of trust in a like 22 year committed relationship that we can just look at each other's phones anytime i'm not advocating for just like every bro who's ever known you to be able to guess your pin

43:58Linus Sebastian:oh man i had something recently where a friend of mine that like yeah i wouldn't have had an interaction like this with in genuinely probably a decade asked me what the password to a certain device was and i was like you know it and then they walked up to me right in it's been like easily a decade since that happened.

44:19Luke Lafreniere:Look, security through obscurity? Security. I'm not going to be saying why I know, but I do know.

44:27Linus Sebastian:The phone is one thing. To be fair, genuinely, I think there's like three people, including myself, that would know that one. To be fair. Okay.

44:40Luke Lafreniere:I mean, sure. Alright.

44:49Luke Lafreniere:keffuddled says is it normal for couples to hide things that much to make sharing a phone that big of a deal see that's the thing is to me it never was but i remember visiting the home of someone who i worked with at some point i'm going to keep it intentionally vague that way and we were there and for whatever reason we had to access the so's computer to like change it was like logged into something to do something okay and for the purposes of making a video we we needed access to change a setting on that thing and that was the one that it was connected to and they didn't know and i was like so you don't know like you forget like no we do not allow each other to know

45:34Linus Sebastian:the password of each other's computers and i was just like okay And like if I want to do something Secretly

45:47Luke Lafreniere:How do you screen melting prank each other? Yeah

45:51Linus Sebastian:Where's the fun? If I want to do something secretly And there's very non-nefarious ways to do something secretly

45:56Luke Lafreniere:Yeah, like an anniversary present Or you know, whatever There's lots of good reasons to snuck about doing something There are still ways to do that Well, not for me Well, yeah, not for you Yeah my wife is the financial controller of my life so anything that i want to do that's a secret has to not involve money so that's tough or at least not involve electronic money it would have to involve

46:21Linus Sebastian:cash money i was gonna yeah or you'd have to like arrange for someone else to do it for you and

46:25Luke Lafreniere:stuff which gets all weird and complicated honestly i her 40th is also coming up coincidentally um And at this point, I was just like, would you like this? Would you like this? Would you like this? Would you like this? Would you like some combination of them? Or would you like all of them?

46:45Linus Sebastian:I'm just... I did the pre-selecting. You can go from there. I put the thought into it. Yeah, yeah.

46:51Luke Lafreniere:Now you just tell me which one you like the best.

46:56Linus Sebastian:That's not bad. That is not bad. No, it is not 80085. don't don't don't i'm not going to confirm or deny anymore but thank you it's not 80085 safest way to be um what the heck are we supposed to be talking about uh robot vacuum spying forget

47:15Luke Lafreniere:it i'm over it all right um gopro okay i want to put a big ass on this one yeah with that i walked onto wansett today having been um actually working on one of my one of my birthday presents for yvonne So we moved into our house a few years ago, and ever since we moved in, we've actually made multiple videos on the subject. Our smart home lighting situation has been an absolute cluster bomb. By the time she has been on this earth for 41 years, out of womb, for 40, 40 years, I will have fixed it. It will be done. over the last week and so i'm going somewhere with this i have been in pretty much a news black hole because i have installed like somewhere between 60 and 70 light switches and done most of the software configuration for the smart home for i'd say well over half of those i've been on like an absolute tear installing these uh new in a valley millimeter wave smart switches pretty much flipping everywhere.

48:25Luke Lafreniere:I also got a couple of separate sensors from Apollo that are really cool. So that'll allow me to work in places where the light switches don't happen to be somewhere useful. Dude, once you get it, it is such a pain in the butt to like learn Home Assistant. It's so powerful, but it's so like, it's powerful in the same way that like Photoshop is powerful. Like it's powerful if you know what you're doing. And if you don't know what you're doing it's just like uh i have a huge tangent here but i want to let you finish um but anyway once you get it once you get it going man it's like magic so depending on the time of day depending on how bright it is from the sun and depending on um like my position in the like kitchen like uh kitchen eating nook like family room like mega room there all the lights will turn on at like different levels and it's like super awesome and it knows it knows where i am and you can like group sensors so as long as any one of the sensors in the kitchen hits you then it like knows you're in the kitchen and like during the day um i'll have like the big pot lights on but then at night i'll just have like the under cabinet and above cabinet so it's like more chill vibes it's i'm like i'm finally getting like really into it and so where i'm coming to with this is I walked on set and I saw that Markiplier is mired in some kind of a controversy right now.

49:56Luke Lafreniere:And so that is the only context I have. It was in a thumbnail and title on that screen over there. And that's all I know. So take this for what it is. And Luke, go ahead.

50:09Linus Sebastian:Yeah. So I know a little bit about this. I haven't watched a single video on it, so I might be missing some context. But yeah, I'll go through some of the notes and I'll add some understandings of my own. GoPro, the company that makes action cameras, is being bought by Starman, an optical photonics firm that plans to fold its AI data center transceivers into the GoPro portfolio. GoPro was down 96 % prior to the merger announcement. GoPro has been unprofitable for the last four consecutive years, facing heavy pressure and increasing competition from Chinese action camera manufacturers. I mean, I'm sure you've heard of like Insta360 and DJI and stuff like that and the handheld cameras they have are taking the world by storm um charles tabuli tabeli tabeli they even put a thing it's literally in here

51:09Linus Sebastian:i love this man the worst part is i read the pronunciation thing i just read it wrong yeah i can't use the word for him anymore i might have done him i might have done better just not reading the pronunciation thing which i appreciate that they put in there i just failed okay roll the one um the ceo of starman optical's parent company says that advanced optics and imaging are essential to ai yeah sure national security and the broader economy most of the mergers press releases stress the point of US optical expertise and IP framing the deal as a way to cut reliance on Chinese manufacturing and secure domestic supply and production.

51:50Linus Sebastian:And in defense of that statement, I have heard this as a major concern for quite a while. And it comes down to national security because, you know, for drones, you might need cameras and stuff. This is like actually a pretty big deal. But fun fact, Markiplier has been wrapped up in a bit of a scandal when he started buying GoPro shares in July and has become the single largest investor in the company, owning 8.5 % of it. He has said publicly that he wasn't aware of the merger and he isn't necessarily a huge fan of the direction the company's heading in. And I have seen in multiple places that he apparently largely did it because like he just really likes their cameras.

52:33Linus Sebastian:He thinks they're a household name. I know he specifically called them out as like a Kleenex type deal where like a lot of people look at an action camera and just think, oh, a GoPro. And that's actually fair. That does happen a lot. And he thought that because of those things that they were undervalued. They still had that, you know, namespace market share. They still have actually very good cameras and stuff like that. So he thought they were undervalued. So he jumped in and bought. And then this merger thing happened and the stock price went through the moon so some people were like whoa insider trading

53:08Luke Lafreniere:but yeah so as someone who's kind of there is more to it than this gone through um headlines about them just being believed and uh that's a really irresponsible headline but okay it's a

53:25Linus Sebastian:little wild there is more to it than this though yeah uh like if i look up market player on the YouTubes. I heard about this. I don't know a ton of details on this. This video right here. $700 versus$7 ,000 camera, GoPro mission, whatever review. There's like a pre-order using a code and you get 10 % off, blah, blah, blah, whatever thing. But it doesn't seem... I even mentioned GoPro in the video. You can use their code here. I'm so good at being sponsored. As far as my understanding goes, I think, I think, I don't know, I think, relax, that he owned, he was like the biggest shareholder of the company when he made this video.

54:12Linus Sebastian:And there wasn't like a investment disclosure, I own this thing thing. There was just a sign that he was being sponsored. So I know that's like part of it. There's a lot of other things going on. If you really want to know what's happening here, currently this is not the most greatest source for this it's literally in the description is it i saw it in

54:33Luke Lafreniere:the description but that could be that could have been edited wasn't that just sponsor i didn't think that was ownership it did say i'm the largest shareholder but i have no idea if that was altered later ah right here interesting and also this is a big part of the reason why i was saying i don't

54:49Linus Sebastian:know a disclosure in a video description is not enough so well i mean this is also a oh perfectly timed 1337 video. Nice. Solid. He might say it somewhere in there. I haven't watched it.

55:05Luke Lafreniere:ScrappyDP says it was altered later after the controversy. Okay. So yeah, yeah. Rillian says he talked to Philip DeFranco saying he didn't know he was the largest shareholder until the article came out. Yeah. That part doesn't matter. You don't have to say you're the biggest shareholder. You have to say that you are invested at all. I'm Derek says, Linus, you'd know about that right yes sponsorship disclosures are very important and something that we've taken very seriously for a long time sometimes to our detriment i can the fact that we disclose all of our sponsorships um has created as far as i can tell a perception that lmg is like more sold out more sponsored than other channels that are do not that do not disclose their sponsorships properly and it's been yes it's been a source of frustration for me over the years that by disclosing things properly we end up in a situation where people assume that we're worse when actually what we're trying to do is do things properly and above board it's very very frustrating

56:10Linus Sebastian:anyway um if he actually didn't know then it's possible he didn't know that you have to do an investment disclosure um i if you knew to do a sponsorship disclosure you might think investment would be one up from that you might think that i mean look i'm i don't

56:32Luke Lafreniere:i don't i i've exchanged like a half a dozen text messages with him ever i don't know the guy um he is overall seemed like a pretty upstanding character over the years i think so a voice for good a voice for a reason for that for that reason i would lean more on the side of like benefit of the doubt assume good intentions even if the actions were not ideal um but like i said when we were going into this i don't know a ton about it and i mean hey congrats to him if he doesn't like the direction the company is going as he said he can certainly sell the shares and apparently they're worth a lot of work.

57:10Luke Lafreniere:They skyrocketed, yeah.

57:13Linus Sebastian:Let's see.

57:14Luke Lafreniere:Oh, man.

57:15Linus Sebastian:Look at the, this is the five day.

57:18Luke Lafreniere:Yeah, Avalon says in his interview, he said he thought sponsorship was enough because there was no investment option on YouTube. That seems like something they should rectify.

57:25Linus Sebastian:Boom.

57:26Luke Lafreniere:Nice.

57:29Linus Sebastian:Boom, dude. If I just look at five days, it's up 177.6%. Nice. So that worked out for him. Yep. Get out while you can. here's a question for you this is not condoning endorsing being okay with etc but does it move the needle for you which if i'm watching a thing and someone is sponsored yeah versus someone is invested versus someone is both it does it affect how you see the video or the or read the content or whatever it is um and and how does it they all affect it but they all affect it differently

58:02Luke Lafreniere:so as someone who works in the industry um and has for a very very long time i feel like this is one of those situations where i can say i am extremely well informed on this subject like there's a lot of stuff we talk about on this show that i'm like yeah not a legal expert not financial advice blah blah blah when it comes to being an influencer and reviewing a piece of technology and making videos about technology not always reviewing very important um i am an expert I know a lot about this. So here's what I would take out of it. If something is sponsored, I assume several things. I assume that the brand had expectations of some kind of messaging or some kind of feature set that would be shown.

58:49Luke Lafreniere:I assume that that brand has an opportunity to review the final content before it is published. I assume that the person making the video was paid. That is just what it is. So with that in mind, I often see this comment on sponsored videos that we upload where someone will go, well, this kind of felt like an ad for that product. You figured it out. You cracked the code. A sponsored video is an ad. And they can be fun to watch. They can be educational still. They can be whatever. We work hard to the best of our ability, make them educational and entertaining and not misleading. Did you spill water all over yourself?

59:40Luke Lafreniere:Yeah. Oh, so that's a very, very old bottle. Yeah. And that's a new lid. And there was a changeover like four years ago, and they're not quite compatible. Just tighten it down tighter, and then you'll be fine. You got the strength for it. Chicken strength.

59:53Linus Sebastian:Every once in a while, Dan delivers me a bottle that tries to assassinate me.

59:58Luke Lafreniere:So with that said, though, anything that is sponsored, by definition, has those elements to it. All right. Now let's talk. Oh, and there are aspects of a sponsored video that I would like to believe, but that I don't always trust. So for example, in the FTC guidelines around sponsorships, you are technically not allowed to say anything that you do not, to the best of your knowledge, believe. So even if I'm sponsored by, let's say, Dell, right? Look at that. Look at that shiny little XPS logo there that I have hidden behind our water bottle. That's actually, maybe we should move these. Dell does kind of pay for that placement.

1:00:37Luke Lafreniere:So we just leave like one pillar? Yeah, just leave the one. There we go. There we go. Now the Dells are back. Okay. So if I'm sponsored, say, for example, by Dell. Yeah. Mr. Michael Dell. Good buddy of mine. Just kidding. You can barely see, but I do like these. Never met him. Okay, there. You're not allowed to say that if you don't actually like it. Oh, I do, though. Even if you're sponsored. Okay. So when you're sponsored, you can say, you know, Dell claims that the XPS whatever is 100 % waterproof, just like Vessi shoes. You know, whatever. You can say the talking points, but if you say, I think this keyboard is outstanding, or I like how large the trackpad is.

1:01:13Luke Lafreniere:I do. FTC guidelines. You can't do that unless you actually do those things. but a lot of people either either don't know that or don't care and so the lines get really really blurry and i think that is where back to your comment that you made about review that is where the concept of a sponsored review has come from is not a thing yeah that literally clear that literally is not a thing that exists a review that is sponsored is not real which is why we called them showcases however yeah his video was not actually sponsored

1:01:58Luke Lafreniere:right so there was no direct exchange of funds for talking points so it's actually not an ad well wait he is he's invested yeah it was an investment he just had no like there was no

1:02:09Linus Sebastian:investment no but sometimes you do get sponsored by it sounds like that wasn't what happened okay

1:02:14Luke Lafreniere:from chat okay so now let's get into talking about a company that you're invested in and there are there are lots and lots it's becoming way more common for online media personalities to be invested in companies i'm invested in a couple myself yeah framework computer uh eshtec who makes hex os those are i think those are the only two i hope i'm not forgetting anything yeah those to um all right so we upload content that is very very close to a review of framework i would say pretty much a review sure in that case if i don't you just actually isn't there like a i don't think we use the word review just because the word review is very sacred to stay away from it yeah but it bears a lot of similarities to a review for sure whether we use the word to describe it or not

1:03:11Linus Sebastian:oh yeah five years ago it probably might be before your investment yeah yeah and so

1:03:17Luke Lafreniere:the way that i would interpret that is okay pinch of salt grain of salt chunk of salt they are that that got them yeah full review there you go two years ago so full so and it was for wait is that the one that i didn't prepare though i don't know i think that's why hold on wait for it like oh lordy whoa i think i didn't write this one

1:03:51Luke Lafreniere:I think that was like the context. Also, investment disclosure. We put money all over the screen. So, can you just skip ahead? I think it might have been Alex who hosted this. Oh, I was...

1:04:02Linus Sebastian:I clicked on a thing I was supposed to click on.

1:04:04Luke Lafreniere:Do you even YouTube, brother?

1:04:08Linus Sebastian:Alex Clark is one of the hosts. So, yeah. Yeah, okay.

1:04:11Luke Lafreniere:Yeah, this is the one that was like done when I was on vacation or something. Or I like recused myself or something. Yeah, it was a whole thing. All right, cool. Look at that guy. So whenever I see something where there's an investment stake involved, you just have to understand the levers, right? Like there's no direct exchange of money. There's no formal agreement for here are the talking points and here's the money that you get. Bag of money, talking points, done deal.

1:04:38Linus Sebastian:But I have heard of agreements. I don't think you have any of these, but I have heard of agreements where people get...

1:04:43Luke Lafreniere:Ambassadorship agreements and things like that. Yeah, you buy into the company, but you get a higher percentage of the company than you would expect for that much money because you are supposed to be some form of brand ambassador or they get access to, I don't know,

1:05:00Linus Sebastian:like maybe you own a sports stadium because you're a billionaire and that product is now available through your stadium or something. Like there's some form of agreement. Yes. Yeah. Yeah.

1:05:09Luke Lafreniere:Um, so in those, in those situations, I just, I kind of look at it and I go, okay, using my own functioning brainstem, how compromised do they appear to be? Do I trust this person? And are they, are they, are they giving, based on what I already know about it, because I will always tell you guys every single time, multiple sources, multiple sources, multiple sources. It's so important, right? So based on the information that I have from my multiple sources, based on what I can deduce for myself, do they seem to be representing the product fairly and honestly? And are they disclosing their relationship?

1:05:52Luke Lafreniere:That's really, really important. Because I actually am very interested in the take of someone who is invested in the product. Sure. in fact i would be in some ways way more interested in markiplier's take on this gopro camera as someone who has spent hundreds of thousands or millions of dollars supporting this company than someone who bought one camera for 500 bucks honestly in a certain sense i heard

1:06:17Linus Sebastian:that he invested looked up why saw a video i don't remember i don't know if it was his i don't know if it was an interview with him or whatever with him saying oh i bought it because they are like the Kleenex of cameras and I think they're undervalued and I was like, cool, and then I went on with the rest of my day.

1:06:33Luke Lafreniere:Yeah, and that's very interesting. Yeah, it is. And I would want to know that. Yeah, for sure. So those are the things that I would be looking out for or that I would be thinking about when I see sponsored content or I see content that is done by someone who is invested in the company.

1:06:54Luke Lafreniere:You just want to know that. Things are going to get murkier. like as more and more YouTubers own more and more companies. Yeah. I mean, there's already arguably the first YouTuber billionaire. Yeah. Like Jimmy's Jimmy Donaldson, Mr. Beast company has got to be worth a billion dollars at this point. I don't know that for sure, but it's like, it's gotta be. Do you include all the subsidiaries and amusement park and bars and food? whatever. Beast industries. I think he calls it. Is that right? Beast enterprises. I think it's beast industries. So go out of my way to not pay attention. So with that in mind, people are going to need media literacy around this.

1:07:36Luke Lafreniere:So I'm happy to talk about this anytime you guys want, but take all of this for what it is as well. I could potentially have an interest in people being less... I'm struggling for the word. Less analytical. I could potentially have an interest in people being more just accepting of influencers like

1:07:59Linus Sebastian:owning stuff one of the reasons like I supported your supported not financially to be clear I supported as in like he was asking around before he did the framework investment yeah I pull I

1:08:11Luke Lafreniere:literally let the company vote over whether like I should be allowed to do it or not all right if I

1:08:15Linus Sebastian:remember correctly I rather publicly voted yes and my reason for it was like what is the what is the i'm gonna manipulate the audience angle of this thing and it's like what you make people want things that are more repairable okay like that so for me i was like whatever cool and your whole thing was like if they deviate from the mission that i'm out anyway so it's like okay well you're publicly holding that so the audience could hold you to that for one thing flailing arms um and then also what is the what is the thing that you could drive what is the idea that you would drive that could indirectly or directly cause sales of that laptop or that product and its repairability and then it's like cool whatever i have no issue with this at all sounds

1:09:05Luke Lafreniere:good go for it um so here's where things get a little complicated today what if framework got purchased by like a defense contractor yeah that is interesting would that change you know maybe not for you maybe not for dan i don't know but for someone do they still hold their repairability mission thing let's let's say they do let's say they do but um you know they're involved in a in a in a conflict like let let's say let's say they're involved in the russian ukrainian con conflict and i'm not going to tell you what side they're on well but just what if they were would that does that make a difference one way the other way both ways doesn't matter as a defense contractor yeah when i remember defense doesn't always mean defense department of war baby um

1:09:55Linus Sebastian:that's i mean that's way too not being able to know what side is insane so like no i guess

1:10:02Luke Lafreniere:because not being able to know what side is crazy okay but if you did know what side and it was the side you supported then probably fine yeah i'm fine with it interesting okay okay yeah

1:10:11Linus Sebastian:i mean honestly i would encourage it i'm a big supporter of canada being involved in the drone

1:10:16Luke Lafreniere:uh industry in ukraine these are and everyone's gonna have their personal lines right like luke's line might not be the same as my line might not be the same as your line and i can respect a lot

1:10:25Linus Sebastian:of other lines when it comes to that to be honest yeah like i i get it like i understand why someone

1:10:30Luke Lafreniere:might just not want anything to do with any company that makes something that kills another human being i think that's reasonable like my um no no blood relation but my my opa um talked about how as a pacifist he was forced during the second world war to charge at the enemy and if he turned around he would be shot yeah um and so what he did was he just went a few degrees above the horizon and just fired and ran. And he says with a very high degree of confidence, he never killed anybody. And that was more important to him than his own life. But he also didn't want to throw his life away. And if someone like that were to say to me, like, oh, my shares in GoPro are meaningless to me now.

1:11:20Luke Lafreniere:I need to sell them because I don't want anything to do with anything that ever kills another human being. I'd say, okay, I respect that. But if someone like you were to also say, you know hey i i believe that in our national sovereignty and i believe that um weapons are he who carries the biggest stick it actually like matters um i can respect that too i think there's i think there's room for there's room for differing opinions yeah there's that there's that guy i

1:11:46Linus Sebastian:think there's a i'm actually 100 certain there's a movie about him um i don't remember his name right now but he i believe he was a pacifist uh for the americans and he like saved a ton of soldiers by they were they were like wounded or pinned down or whatever and he he ran the back hacksaw ridge yeah yeah so and like that's that is freaking sick and i know hacksaw ridge is like respected and seen very positively desmond dos there we go yeah that's for sure the name um that guy is seen very positively respected even by people who believe the whole we need to have the bigger stick thing because like yeah anyways float plane chat i love you guys sometimes blue

1:12:27Luke Lafreniere:says, your Opa? Where did that German word come from? It means gramps, by the way. You're so close, yet so far. Yes, my stepdad's father. Who is Mennonite. Alright, if you must know. Sorry. Okay. Anywho. uh yeah so markiplier um hopefully you know you're still a chill dude who just kind of got

1:13:03Linus Sebastian:caught up in something by accident um i purely based on vibes and a massive lack of information i think so and you know what if you're gonna make assumptions how about that one instead of the

1:13:20Luke Lafreniere:other one yeah as someone who's been on the other side of it a lot I can definitely respect hey I'm not that informed on this how about I assume the best I just like doesn't seem that hard a little

1:13:31Linus Sebastian:bit of good faith assuming the best of people you know you mentioned you've exchanged like 12 text messages with them yeah I have exchanged a grand total of zero I remember there was one time I was going to PAX Prime it was super early in the morning and I saw him in a Starbucks and he was sitting there talking to someone he had a guitar an acoustic guitar on his back with like the strap nobody bad ever played an acoustic guitar impossible and i saw him from across the room and just kind of like nodded at him and he nodded back and i was like i feel like the nicest thing i can do right now is just not say hi um and that is my entire there's the entirety of my interaction with him i think i've maybe watched less than five of his videos ever

1:14:14Luke Lafreniere:charge nuclei says it seems like pretty solid you can do that but you'd be wrong most of the time that is such a sad worldview that is a sad worldview how about we not assume the worst

1:14:25Linus Sebastian:it also depends like you can all you can also sometimes have differing partial bits of information and you have some past information like we saw how um we've seen how markiplier has been around for so long yeah and i don't really know what else has been a problem i don't know nothing that comes to memory for me i don't exactly pay a ton of attention

1:14:49Luke Lafreniere:to that space i don't know man i um that's another area that i have a lot of thoughts on

1:14:55Linus Sebastian:but i'm not talking about today sure but yeah i don't i don't know i feel like i'm going to

1:15:00Luke Lafreniere:being around long enough people are going to be looking for something and this feels like the way this is blowing up feels to me like people just kind of well no one can be that successful for that long and make a movie and you know be an online influencer and a gamer and be just generally a good looking chad and have an only fans and just be that good and not have something wrong with them and they're just like waiting for it you don't know about his only fans no yeah wow i don't know if he still has it but he had one at one point fascinating like imagine being you know talented enough that exposed good looking enough and transparent enough even his clothes are transparent yeah i the the dong pics that bought gopro sounds like an amazing documentary title yeah still a thing apparently wow yeah all pros that's kind of based yeah that's

1:15:54Linus Sebastian:cool all proceeds will be donated to the cincinnati children's hospital my hometown that's cool actually um donk i'm not gonna follow through with that

1:16:08Linus Sebastian:anyways uh what was the other thing i was gonna say i had something to say shoot oh yeah this is also a bad argument that could be extrapolated in bad ways so i will not die on this hill i'll run down the hill right after i run to the top but if we're gonna go after people for insider trading maybe the government oh and then does now and then uh i don't know maybe the people like markiplier after that but maybe let's start there yeah well how about we just how about we go with how about we go in order of priority so i i i meant even literally just within the localized idea of insider trading though like my god man there's like the what is it nancy pelosi index insider trading i hardly know her you're gonna go to jail it's like i don't even know

1:17:04Linus Sebastian:just i there's ridiculous stock market manipulation going on there dude the whole oh my god we've talked about this on the show haven't we you can you can like basically pre-order trump's tweets for like a hundred grand a month and then just abuse the stock market based off it?

1:17:20Luke Lafreniere:I think you mean truths.

1:17:21Linus Sebastian:Yeah, whatever. That's so stupid, man. Hey, that's not illegal for US senators. Yeah, so maybe let's look at that first. Why don't you make it illegal? I understand this is the argument where you set up a pet sanctuary and you're a nice person. They're like, well, why didn't you focus on cancer? And it's like, okay, we can do more than one thing at once. I get it. I understand why. There's reasons why I said I'd run down the hill right afterwards.

1:17:45Luke Lafreniere:What about ism is like, a key like like personality disorder level deflection accomplish nothing yeah however however but however you won't hear me quote the bible very often but there's uh is it a proverb or something it's a something but basically it's like hey don't worry about the splinter in buddy's until you've dealt with the two by four in your own.

1:18:13Linus Sebastian:That's in the...

1:18:14Luke Lafreniere:Essentially. Okay. Yeah. And I think that there's a lot of people who could stand to kind of... It's obviously more about hypocrisy, but I also think that there's something to be learned about just prioritization. Can we deal with the bigger problems?

1:18:31Linus Sebastian:This feels like the maybe completely non-existent splinter compared to the freaking two by four. Yeah. This is...

1:18:42Luke Lafreniere:The Equinox Phoenix says, very paraphrased, but yeah, Bible. I thought you were like coding literally, and I was like, what? Nah, nah, brother.

1:18:53Linus Sebastian:It sounds fairly Bible. He was a carpenter.

1:18:55Luke Lafreniere:That's the Valley Girl edition of the Bible. King Valley Girl. I don't think they had two by four inches. I don't think they had inches yet. There were probably some cubits involved. All right. Okay.

1:19:13Linus Sebastian:Moving on. Yeah. Oh, right.

1:19:17Luke Lafreniere:Oh, dude, it's a huge... We didn't talk about Markiplier for a while. It's a huge week for CW announcements. We are launching the Besawd Collection, inspired by, well, okay, do I really have to say it? Do you want to read it?

1:19:34Linus Sebastian:Your PC has run into a problem. I was going to fix it, but I got lazy and just shut down. Hopefully, it turns back on. 69 % complete.

1:19:47Luke Lafreniere:It has anti-fray stitching, a smooth tracking surface, and an anti-slip rubber backing to keep it in place. And we have the blue screen of dehydration insulated water bottle available in all three sizes. Our 20 ounce, our 40 ounce, and our Mondo. Do you want to open up the 64 ounce so they can see it? Nope, that's not it. I'm pointing at it. Armando 64 ounce made with double ball insulated stainless steel to keep your drinks cold for up to 16 hours or hot for up to 8 hours. Look at that. Your body is dehydrated and needs to restart. Please consume fluids in order to continue. I use one of these every day.

1:20:25Luke Lafreniere:Yeah, basically it doubles as a reminder to drink some freaking water before you hit your own system error. Both are available at lmg.gg slash Blue screen.

1:20:34Linus Sebastian:That's why I use one of these 64 ounces is because I can definitely remember to fill it up once nice

1:20:41Luke Lafreniere:I get it. Hold on. Let's make sure those Dell logos are exposed Sponsorship disclosure just like market pliers only fans. That's right Also, we are restocking our float plane dip dye hoodie if you've been wanting one This is your chance to get it And if you're not a float plane member yet You can join now to get access to exclusive content and other perks like free shipping at our highest tier. Yeah. Not the drink.

1:21:14Luke Lafreniere:And we're not Amazon. There's no pee in bottles involved. Is that what Prime is?

1:21:24Linus Sebastian:With some thickening agents.

1:21:26Luke Lafreniere:Oh!

1:21:30Luke Lafreniere:Thicker pee!

1:21:39Linus Sebastian:I don't think I've gotten both of them that good in a while

1:21:42Luke Lafreniere:We should add MSG to it

1:21:44Linus Sebastian:Oh

1:21:46Luke Lafreniere:Maybe delicious There's only one way to know Dan's MSG tips You gotta try these things Also Also this is a big deal Nuclear is blowing up With our current

1:22:08Luke Lafreniere:our current uh with our current sales trajectory the new colorway of screwdriver that we oh oh man my tech sack's not in my bag because okay well whatever you got it my tech sack's not in my bag because i was using it to change out light switches um with our current rate of sales it will be gone quickly and while the excitement's hot we actually did a deep dive on the whole process in our newsletter. So watch for upcoming behind the scenes looks at how we develop our products and all the weird problems we run into along the way by joining at lmg.gg slash newsletter. Also as promised, more is being added to the power outlet.

1:22:45Luke Lafreniere:We've dug deep into the corners of the warehouse to pull some of the last few units of some of our biggest and not so biggest releases. So make sure that you are checking it out at lmg.gg slash power outlet so last chances once it's gone it's gone and uh oh man there's uh yeah there's some there's definitely some stuff from the archives in here oh this feels on topic this week hey we have yeah just regular double xl we have one so you can still get the if buying isn't owning if you're a regular length double xl and you only want one of them um cool cool beans what what uh the pack jacket is$40.

1:23:30Luke Lafreniere:Yeah, so the prices will just go down until they sell, and if you miss it, you miss it. That simple. Where am I supposed to be? Oh, right, yeah, so with all these exciting things that you can get on LTTstore.com, now's a better time than ever to send a checkout message. All you got to do is add something to your cart. Luke's on it. Man, I love that Reese. He's got that look? He really does. He looks exactly the same. It looks like we just photoshopped the same head onto different outfits. It's actually insane to the point

1:24:01Linus Sebastian:where I thought we did it at one point. No, we didn't.

1:24:03Luke Lafreniere:It's wild.

1:24:04Linus Sebastian:No, he's just that consistent.

1:24:05Luke Lafreniere:Multiple days, multiple shoots. He's that consistent. Wild. Anyway. Yeah, if we're live, you can send a checkout message when you check out. You can link it to your floatplane account, which does something. I forget what that does. It works now.

1:24:17Linus Sebastian:It shows your name that way. Theoretically, it works now.

1:24:19Luke Lafreniere:Oh, it shows you like your floatplane account? Oh, that's cool. okay and then you leave a message for producer dan who will pop it up on the screen if it's just like a hi mom shout out or whatever or who might reply to himself or who might curate it for me and luke to respond good lord there's a lot today yeah it's been very popular oh what are people buying uh water bottles that makes sense uh for some reason the blue screen water bottles is cool we've sold a bunch cool yeah i want one too uh yeah i mean send a message like dingus dingus dingus dingus dingus dingus thank you thank you that was worth me reading someone sent that yeah oh okay yeah well you can make dan read anything i will you can't make him actually do anything every single one but he will read every message

1:25:06Linus Sebastian:so maybe that's because of bringus studios being on flow plane now bringus is on flow plane yes I don't think it's been like super publicly announced But if I go down I can see Bring us What? Yeah

1:25:22Luke Lafreniere:Oh that's super cool Early access ad list cut the Xbox toaster What? Yeah Okay that's pretty cool Yeah Super happy

1:25:35Linus Sebastian:We were talking about like We were talking about trying to find Ways to make it easier to continually get content to people that are on flow plane without necessarily because this is the general battle every time is when i when i try to get someone on flow plane um they they they go like okay but like what do i do how do i offer the audience a thing when we first started doing this even all the way back to rip vessel it was just early access right but the early access model is still interesting but it's kind of hard to keep up with it's yeah

1:26:13Luke Lafreniere:sometimes it's harder to keep up with the same content hamster wheel but faster yeah which is like not faster but like you have to spin it a little faster for a while and then you have to

1:26:27Linus Sebastian:stay on it and it also creates interesting expectations where like what if something has to be done super rapidly and you need to get it out super quickly well now you're screwing over your paid audience because now it's no longer early access for them and you can build an understanding but there's still frustration there etc etc etc so we went back and forth on some ideas for a while actually a really wonderful call for a really long time and then apologize for how long i kept them on on discord for uh but yeah it was on the platform it's very cool very cool

1:26:57Luke Lafreniere:here's a really good question uh trebelosity over on floatplane on the restock announcement for this hoodie says, why not restock everything? Does warehouse space cost that much? It's actually, yes, first of all. For one, yes. Especially now that we have multiple distribution centers. But also it's really more about like, dude, garment production is so much more complicated. If someone had told me how complicated it was, I probably would have been like, nah, forget it. But it's usually more to do with minimums because you can't just you can't just like order 10 hoodies like i think a lot of people think oh yeah merch i can just make 10 or 20 for like a like a team event or whatever but our garments are not um they're not off the shelf and then just with like a logo printed on them like this uses custom poles that have little float planes on the bottoms of them uh these are uh die matched as close as we can get them.

1:28:01Luke Lafreniere:So like these are custom. We're getting embroidery done. Our hoodie itself is custom. It has our cell phone pocket. The dip dye process. They're not going to just like fire up the dip dye tank for you to order 10 units. It doesn't work like that. Like it's a whole thing. So if your sales volumes are not high enough to justify ordering hundreds, in some cases, thousands of them, then you can't restock them. And so that's how you end up with like one double XL in that size, because as much as I would love for us to just have every item available for order for everybody, there's also the factor of just like having choice paralysis by having too much stuff on your website can make it hard for people to shop.

1:28:43Luke Lafreniere:So yeah, there's, it's a, it's a lot more complicated than just like, Linus is a cheap and doesn't want to order it. Right. Like, yeah, sometimes, but surprisingly rarely. All right, let's get into some comms then. Oh, yeah. Did we not do one yet? No. Oh. All right. It's Tangent City today. Hello to the dulcet tones of DLL. A few weeks back, you mentioned that tech is worrying. What current trends in tech worry the three of you the most? P.S. The podcast is so welcome on my drive to work.

1:29:18Linus Sebastian:Just the cost and everything. A lot of people that really enjoy this hobby have just genuinely, straight up, been priced out. Just fully.

1:29:26Luke Lafreniere:Yeah, I had, I don't know if I've actually talked about this on WAN Show, but at one of our all hands, I basically told the team, I was like, hey, we are headed into an environment where kind of like what Robert, I forget his last name, from Intel said, where he was like, yeah, it's like a tale of two markets. We're going to have to start just understanding that not every piece of content can be for everybody. There are going to be exceptions like the Steam Machine, which is just fascinating. because there's a software story to tell there. There's a compatibility and, like, the future of gaming story to tell there.

1:30:02Luke Lafreniere:There's also a, like, kind of expensive piece of hardware story to tell. There's also an entry-level performance story to tell, right? Like, there's so many stories that it kind of... And that's reflected in the results. Like, I think, like, 4 million people watched our review of the Steam Machine. But we're going to have to recognize that for a lot of the other content pieces that we're doing that we are targeting a segment of the audience and not everything is going to be

1:30:29Linus Sebastian:for everybody and like i i really love that quote from um arrowhead studios which i'm really hoping it's still on their website let me check yeah it is haha this is like one of my favorite things um a game made for everyone is a game made for no one strongly believe it and you know content made for everyone is content made for no one in my opinion um but we've also talked about how you know 10 of earners are buying 50 of things and those things include stuff that might be more essential to your life than ram um so a video made for people who are currently enthusiastically buying computer hardware where is a video made for really not a lot of people.

1:31:22Yeah.

1:31:23Linus Sebastian:Which is like a problem.

1:31:24Luke Lafreniere:And it is, but it also is not an existential threat, which is what I was trying to get across to the team where I'm like, look, it used to be that if you told me, hey, Linus, we're going to do this video concept, it's going to get less than a million views. I just said, well, you know, is that sustainable, right? Can we afford to do that?

1:31:48Linus Sebastian:Less than a million engaged views, which will be a topic later on.

1:31:52Luke Lafreniere:We'll get into that. And if they were like, you know, I might have said, is this sustainable, right? Like, can we afford all the production costs involved in this? And are we still going to be coming out ahead? And the answer might have been no. But since then, I'd like to say, you know, good job, everybody. pulling together as a team, recognizing that we weren't going to be able to rely on volume of views forever. I think my response to that has changed in a big way lately. The answer has been more, hey, you know, is this something that has a high degree of excitement within one of our sort of target audience bands?

1:32:39Luke Lafreniere:And if it might only get half a million views, or it might only get 700 ,000 views or, you know, whatever it is that we think it's going to be engaged views. We'll get to that later. Then maybe that's justifiable as long as we can continue to fire on all cylinders for things like our products, for finding ways to get people to engage through float plane with us, you know, creating exclusive content, like all of these other things that, that we do to keep an, a more niche enthusiast audience engaged. And one of the things that I said during that time is like, we're going to stop being afraid to make videos about the latest features.

1:33:21Luke Lafreniere:We're going to make a video about DLSS 5, even though that's something that is only supported officially on recent gen GPUs. We're going to make a video just building the fastest PC. We're going to go back to doing that kind of stuff. We're also going to make more broadly applicable stuff like how to stop a smart TV from spying on you. That'll be a piece of evergreen content. We're also going to do value stuff. can you put the newest cpu in the oldest motherboard um we're gonna do stuff that we're just gonna do because i thought it was cool uh this video is like one of my favorites that i've done in forever and i don't even care that it got 600 000 views because it was an absolute blast i got full custom water cooling good lord i got full custom water cooling for less than the price of a noctua or like a top end corsair ai o and i'm talking like full full for realsies water cooling like GPU RGB all the things hardline tubing water cooling freaking awesome that is nuts yeah and you know what not that many people are water cooling these days but f*** it I just don't I don't think I can care about that anymore I think that do stuff that seems fun I think I may even do a formal announcement of this like on the LTT channel but I think it's gonna change I think it's going to change a lot over the next year.

1:34:42Luke Lafreniere:And I think it's going to be a lot less of like, you know, what the computer enthusiast sort of this vague nebulous concept of what the audience is asking for. and it's going to be a lot more of whatever the hell I feel like doing today. And as part of that, I think you're going to see me take a significant step back from some of our other channels as well. So I got to kind of fester on it a little bit more, but I think it's time.

1:35:17Linus Sebastian:We're in a time of change.

1:35:19Luke Lafreniere:Big change, dude. Massive, massive change.

1:35:24Linus Sebastian:Yeah, should we talk about the views topic? Let's talk about the views topic. Or are we doing another? Can we do a second?

1:35:29Luke Lafreniere:com yeah sorry i just realized that was only one all good lld after all these years working together what's one tech or life opinion the other has changed your mind about and one where you still think they're completely wrong something luke's completely wrong about oh wait we have to come up with both yeah i don't know pick something with one if you want that's such a cop-out because we'll both just pick a thing the other one convinced us of yeah i'm trying to think of something Luke's, because I can think of something I don't necessarily agree with Luke completely about. Something Luke's completely wrong about.

1:36:03Luke Lafreniere:Something I respect about Luke. I'm going to go full politician here and just not answer the question. Something I respect about my opponent is that he is a logical man. And so even when I don't agree, I can at least follow the breadcrumbs to how he got there.

1:36:23Linus Sebastian:I can give something you convinced me on. I don't even know if you remember this. That'll be interesting. I think about this every once in a while. Oh. And I wonder, I come back to this to ask myself if I've like lost my way. I don't know if I've, I'm sure I've talked to you about this before, but I'll often consider what would different ages of me think about where I am now? Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. I have that thought like often.

1:36:50Luke Lafreniere:Yeah.

1:36:51Linus Sebastian:And like actually intentionally go through that process every once in a while to just kind of like.

1:36:55Luke Lafreniere:What would 10 year old me think? Yeah. would he think i'm cool yeah and like smart what are the actions i've done over the last

1:37:01Linus Sebastian:few months do these things seem like previous versions of me uh would consider of them like honorable or good or or whatever fun who knows but like what what would previous and i respect what i think the previous versions of me would think and sometimes it's not positive but sometimes i dismiss that because i'm like yeah that version of me would not like this but he was a naive little Maybe he was a naive little shit. Yeah, he doesn't necessarily understand the he hadn't made it to the real world The things I'm dealing with right now or the things that people in my life are dealing with right now The sacrifices I might need to make yeah in order to deal with those etc So like I don't I don't always go like oh no But it's it is an exercise that I go through Okay, one of the things that I run into fairly often is when we started first started working together I don't know if you remember this.

1:37:51Linus Sebastian:I refuse to do ads. Oh Yeah that's right you wouldn't record sponsor segments hardline refused and i was just like okay and i was just dumb i had a different view of like what i wanted us to do i would have been happy with us staying as like three people and scrapping it out but i also didn't have to deal with the money

1:38:20Luke Lafreniere:and you didn't know how close we were to running out of it no i didn't want you to know that then

1:38:25Linus Sebastian:and then once i started learning more about that i started doing it and that was that was like literally you started being like more transparent with me about some of the numbers i don't know if you even know that that's what caused it no i didn't i stopped fighting hosting ads because i was like oh he like has to do this that's how it works none of us have jobs and then i'm just being like well i won't do them and i was like well that's lame and that's like dishonorable in a way how luxurious to be so principled but that's that's exactly my point of like oh yeah so i'm okay with him tanking everything but i won't do any of it but i will take my paycheck and then i was like okay i'll i'll i'll drop this um that's hilarious i actually did not remember i think about that

1:39:05Luke Lafreniere:every once in a while i didn't remember that you weren't willing to do sponsor reads only now that

1:39:10Linus Sebastian:you bring it up i only vaguely remember it even which i technically think technically is an artifact of why you do the wanshow ones weird fun fact i never really thought about it because i've i've jumped in and done them before some some weeks you weren't on wanshow and i would do all the reads

1:39:27Luke Lafreniere:yeah but even when i'm even when i'm feeling like crap i always do always jumping and do i just

1:39:32Linus Sebastian:i've even tried to offer to do them for you and you just say no no no but i think it's your brain locked in on when we started WAN show, I would never do the reads. That's crazy. So there's your, yeah. I often only have like remember that when I'm like in a reflective mode, which is not super commonly like while I'm hanging out with people. So this isn't a topic of conversation that comes up much. But yeah, I ran into, I have that thought of like.

1:40:05Luke Lafreniere:Yeah, PK7 asks, So now that WAN is 50 % owned by you, do you have to do half of the ads now? I mean, sure. I don't care. All right.

1:40:12Linus Sebastian:I've offered to do them in the past. I have no issue now.

1:40:15Luke Lafreniere:That's so funny.

1:40:16Linus Sebastian:Okay. All right. Well, we split them into two now, so you could do three or four. That's crazy. To me, now it doesn't matter. I don't mind doing it. I don't mind not doing it. It doesn't. I think I would feel uncomfortable. It's a thing that needs to be done. Doing ads? You think so? No, no, no. No. Having Linus not do the ads. Because, I mean, it has been the same thing for so many years now. I mean, over 10 years.

1:40:36Luke Lafreniere:I had the same mindset as you. I was like, I hate ads. I'm never going to do ads. They may put one in front of me and go, yeah, yeah, yeah.

1:40:43Linus Sebastian:You know, punk music and stuff like that. But it's, you know, a lot of those guys started doing stuff to make ends meet, right? I mean, it's one of those things where it's like, nothing is black and white, right? And I still believe pretty strongly in not doing certain types of ads. Yeah. I've had conversations with this about you know I'm not going to go self-promotion route but there's a thing that I do and we've had conversations about like what ads we would be okay with

1:41:12Luke Lafreniere:I don't care yeah speaking of which hold on I'm going to find it just because I watched his first video and it was so good and I just don't really care about the policy right now I can't find it

1:41:27Linus Sebastian:what are you talking about

1:41:29Luke Lafreniere:James has a channel oh i can't find it he only has one video and it only has like 2 000 views so i'm it's like hard to find right now dang it sorry keep talking i'll just throw it uh but yeah we've talked about like

1:41:43Linus Sebastian:what kind of sponsors we would accept or not accept and there's there's certain lines that i jumped on where i'm like i'm not okay with x y or z thing um and you know it is what it is he has his own lines um Budden Pal is literally unsearchable on YouTube really? I've never had an issue finding it the first thing that comes up

1:42:10Luke Lafreniere:did he rebrand it? I cannot find this damn channel, here it is

1:42:15Linus Sebastian:work account by the way games tries

1:42:20Luke Lafreniere:yeah this video is like awesome

1:42:24Linus Sebastian:surprised my wife with a new mudroom and it cost me everything fun fact i helped him paint those

1:42:30Luke Lafreniere:cabinets i didn't do much but i helped him a little six that second one the six hours i wonder

1:42:36Linus Sebastian:how that will do over time i have no idea i think he's just doing stuff i think that's i he's trying yeah yeah fair enough it's right in the name that's what i had always wanted to do that's what i really like about the side channels is just like not i don't want to make junk but i don't technically care about the views at the end that much obviously there's a little bit

1:42:59Luke Lafreniere:of well i mean it never hurts you go yeah yeah exactly it doesn't i mean let's let's let's be real i mean people don't make their way into our line of work without a little bit of the you know

1:43:10Linus Sebastian:a little bit i care a bit but i don't have to survive off of it you know we can we can release something and if it doesn't do that well it's like oh well and you go to work the next day like it's not it's not a it's it's nice to not have that part of it and you can just experiment and try things if something doesn't work it doesn't hurt you that bad and just keep moving forward um i i like that part a lot i kind of wish we released our videos after the youtube change but

1:43:34Luke Lafreniere:oh i guess let's talk about that or wait is there are we supposed to do anything i think i think we finished the uh yeah we should probably speaking of sponsors we should probably get a couple of those reads done and then we'll talk about the youtube view changes okay uh because i've got some i've got some concrete numbers now like we knew that it was going to change but now i can go through the dashboard and really show you guys like what it what it looks like i've got some too the show is brought to you by odoo if your business is paying a bunch of companies to use different apps on different platforms you start to feel tangled up in a web of your own making.

1:44:11Luke Lafreniere:Frodo did not make that web. Minor point, but yeah, pretty. Yeah. Anyway, it sounds to me like you need a friend, a friend like Odoo. Odoo is business management software with just about any app you could need built right into the platform at an affordable price. For finance and sales, you can get apps for accounting, invoicing, CRM to help you organize projects. It also gives you the ability to run an online shop or offer subscriptions and rentals. Odoo can even help you with marketing with apps for socials, emails, text, or organizing events. And most of this can be set up to be automated, which is pretty cool.

1:44:44Luke Lafreniere:They also have apps for all your HR team's needs, like the ability to centralize employee info. They have onboarding tools and time off tracking. You can create custom interfaces too. So you see the information you need and nothing more. And if you only need one app, this is one of the coolest things about Odoo. It's free. Use our link for a free 15 day trial. Oh wow, that water bottle is right there. With no credit card required or or book a demo with their expert team to learn how Odoo can help your business. The show is also brought to you by Vessi. It's September, which means the rain's back.

1:45:17Luke Lafreniere:And coffee companies are pouring cinnamon nutmeg sauce into their drinks and calling them pumpkin. And you're also just realizing now that your summer shoes don't keep water out. So hey, maybe keep your socks dry in style with our sponsor Vessi and their weekend Chelsea lineup of shoes. Whether you're looking to break something in before pumpkin patch season, or you just want something to wear on a hike, Vessi says their shoes are 100 % waterproof thanks to their Dimotex weave, which also happens to make them breathable and lightweight. And guess what? They're easy to clean after those yuckier, muckier days.

1:45:46Luke Lafreniere:They come in both men and women's sizes as well as in a variety of colors so you can match them with your favorite fall outfits. And if you're not happy with your purchase, Vessi has a 30-day hassle-free returns as well as a whole year warranty on everything in their store. Vessi's worked with us for a long time and many of our team members have even worn their Vessi's rain and shine and you can too save 15 on your first pair using our link down below and i'm gonna wait till after we're out of the vessi spot but i actually this is like my new wombo combo

1:46:20Luke Lafreniere:oh that's okay you couldn't see the socks damn it but i did vessi shoes and ltt socks you get that you get that wool content in there you get the breathability of the vessis it's like it's like the perfect you get the cushion with the sockies i am like happier than a than five little piggies in wool uh with how my feet situation is going every day uh scrappy dps do sell them in a bundle deal unfortunately not uh aircon in floatplane chat says what would it take for linus to declare something waterproof uh nothing there's nothing i don't think okay okay context does matter so for me one of the big things with vessi is just that it's a wear item that i know will develop gaps so even though to their credit diamond tax is actually really cool um the way that i wear my shoes every single day and do not rotate through them i didn't know that wasn't normal um i just put on the exact same pair of shoes every day so I like churn through shoes.

1:47:30Linus Sebastian:I think you and I both learned that much later in life. Yeah. I still do that as well. Yeah. Like people have like different shoes and I was like, that's crazy. What?

1:47:38Luke Lafreniere:Like at the same time.

1:47:39Linus Sebastian:That's wild. Yeah.

1:47:41Luke Lafreniere:Like,

1:47:42Linus Sebastian:yeah. Honestly, the first time I heard that I thought it was like a fashion thing and I thought it was cause you'd own multiple pairs of the same type of shoe, but in different colors and you'd like mix them to look cool.

1:47:50Luke Lafreniere:That is so stupid. That was much younger. I love it.

1:47:58Luke Lafreniere:Yeah, anyway. Wow.

1:48:02Linus Sebastian:This was like Converse era. People had a bunch of different colors of shoes and would wear more colorful clothing.

1:48:07Luke Lafreniere:So yeah, like in the context of like a shoe that has glues that join dissimilar materials, I don't think you'd ever get me to say it's waterproof. You know what? I'd say gumboots are waterproof though because they're a molded single rubber piece. I wouldn't say that like a glued one is. I've seen ones that have like multiple pieces and they have seams. I wouldn't say that that's waterproof, but I would say that a molded single piece gumboot is waterproof. Yeah, I'd say that. Do you factor in time?

1:48:37Linus Sebastian:Yeah. Yeah. But a reasonable lifespan of a human is maybe the time.

1:48:43Luke Lafreniere:I don't even know if it's like the entire lifetime of a human. I would say, I would say 20 years. I don't know. It's more, it's, it's, it's not that concrete. Like I would say, I would say this water bottle is waterproof.

1:48:58Linus Sebastian:Because like one of the lines for me why I have not said waterproof is because eventually.

1:49:03Luke Lafreniere:Yeah, I mean the Grand Canyon. Eventually.

1:49:05Linus Sebastian:A rock is not waterproof. You will lose.

1:49:07Luke Lafreniere:Yeah. Water makes fools of us all. Water wins. Every time. I was over on Barnston Island recently and we were going down a road that had not been serviced in some time. I bet your water was winning. My kids were like WTF and I was like, sometimes water, it do be freezing. It just takes a while.

1:49:38Linus Sebastian:Syphilis. Wow. In Flowplane chat said, water finds a way. Yeah.

1:49:43Luke Lafreniere:It's like life. It does.

1:49:45Linus Sebastian:Eventually.

1:49:46Luke Lafreniere:Okay. I think we're supposed to be doing some topics. It's been, wow. It's been a while. Oh, wait. We're going to talk YouTube views.

1:49:53Linus Sebastian:Yeah. YouTube redefines view. Beginning August 24th, YouTube now counts a view the moment a video starts to play across all formats, shorts, VOD, and live streams. The change does not impact partner program earnings or eligibility. I thought it did. Earning will remain based on engaged short views and engaged watch hours while partner program eligibility is still based on qualified shorts views or qualified watch hours. Last week, YouTube announced it will be doubling the thresholds for... Yeah, what? Last week, YouTube announced it will be doubling the thresholds for... Yeah, that's just a separate thing.

1:50:35Linus Sebastian:So, okay, two things happening at basically the same time. Yes. I guess one doesn't impact the other, but sure. I think these were launched at the same time for a reason. But anyways, last week, YouTube announced it will be doubling the thresholds for the new partner program applicants starting in 2027.

1:50:50Luke Lafreniere:All right, so let's talk a little bit about this. We've already talked about sort of the pros and cons of changing the way that a view is counted. If you didn't tune into that WAN show, here's the short summary. Basically, it puts YouTube VOD, which is long form, on an even playing field with things, other platforms like Instagram and with shorts on YouTube itself in terms of how the view counts are measured. This doesn't matter at all because it doesn't affect your payout or it doesn't affect your eligibility for the partner program, except that it affects your fragile ego. So that's one part of it.

1:51:26Luke Lafreniere:And also it affects your ability to validate your clout with outside sponsors and partners. And against outside platforms. Well, that's exactly it. So you could be a YouTuber who's getting 100 ,000 views on your video, and you could be going up against, you know, for sponsor dollars, an Instagrammer who gets a quarter million views on their video or whatever, their reel or whatever it is. And a sponsor partner could look at that and go, oh, I should sponsor the Instagram thing. When actually YouTube was just counting views in a more, in my opinion, correct way. So YouTube kind of sold out, but they did it in a way that wasn't really to their benefit.

1:52:07Luke Lafreniere:It was more just to the benefit of the creators on their platform. I don't think they get anything from this.

1:52:12Linus Sebastian:I think their platform looks more active compared to how it did before. I think that's fair. I think that's fair. I think when you're looking at the numbers for things like views on X, views on Instagram, views on Facebook, views on TikTok, views on upcoming Billy Billy, views on everything else, no one else is calculating it the way that youtube does so youtube less looks less active looks less uh interesting it looks like people perform more poorly on youtube it looks like it is a a more difficult path to relevance despite the fact that compared to a lot of those platforms it is a actually much easier path to relevance because discoverability on youtube is better than

1:52:54Luke Lafreniere:like practically anywhere um so let's jump in and have a look at how this change where they measure the view the second it starts playing rather than several seconds in is impacting the number so first thing i'm gonna do crazy that's oh what is have my laptop not be outputting to that one second sorry i'm just our laptop partner is definitely still dell but i just happen to have my dashboard signed in here.

1:53:22Linus Sebastian:We try to not log into those types of things on the WAN show laptops for security reasons.

1:53:29Luke Lafreniere:Alright, here we go. So we'll jump into content here. Oop, my nice thought. What?

1:53:40Luke Lafreniere:You've changed the input, so I just need to modify the input. Unless it's not outputting properly. So it works, but my button doesn't work. yeah duplicate is on so I should be outputting you are not is it 1080 you're 1920 by 1200

1:53:56Linus Sebastian:should I do another short topic while you guys mess with that or is it going to be done in a moment

1:54:01Luke Lafreniere:it'll probably be done in a moment just got to set it to 1080 yeah I know how to do that it's harder than you think these days I hate that

1:54:14Luke Lafreniere:okay we good checking

1:54:23Luke Lafreniere:no i shall show you has 1200 what see what i see what i mean sucks because just because it says that doesn't mean it is yeah some change it like downscales the picture but doesn't adjust the output so flipping one of the reasons i'm really happy with these dells is they do it perfectly i've used this one for this before though um yeah what if i extend extend normally does very well okay you know what luke maybe um

1:55:02Linus Sebastian:maybe go for it do another small topic okay i'm excited for this one uh there is currently a cow playing EVE Online on Twitch. For reasons that are not entirely clear, EVE Online's recently renamed publisher, Fenris Creations, set up a small enclosure with cameras and buttons enabling a cow to play the long-running, massively multiplayer economic simulator sure, kind of in space, also known as EVE Online. And there is no real further notes than that other than the fact that there is a Twitch link to the VOD that I can't go to because my screen share is also messed up it seems. There we go. And you can see the cow.

1:55:50Linus Sebastian:So does it win? Well, it's Eve, so you only win if you quit. So I'm assuming no. But I was very unsurprised that it was sitting in its station spinning around because that's what basically all Eve players do. So it was playing the game very effectively at the start. We watch movies. They should just have a movie on that TV and then they would be playing Eve. Basically the same thing. It's spamming some form of input now. Eventually it goes out into space. I think it's flying a Roark roll. Okay. I don't know what it's doing in a Roark. How did it afford that? I don't know how it afforded a Roark.

1:56:31Linus Sebastian:My assumption is they wanted it to be bait for people to come blow it up. But yeah, you can see he's warping somewhere. I don't know how he's doing the inputs. Like you can see these little white things around. And I think those are its input buttons to some degree. There is fairly clearly some amount of like human stuff going on because they type like real things in sometimes. So I really, this is, the whole thing is very, very strange. Wow, is this how ads work on Twitch now?

1:57:08Linus Sebastian:I have to say as much as all ads suck that is way better. It's tolerable. I'm into that.

1:57:16Luke Lafreniere:It's kind of like Subway Surfers. That was pretty smart. Whoever came up with that. I like that. That's pretty good. Wow Luke's character arc going from anti-ad to now. Wow what a smart ad.

1:57:28Linus Sebastian:You have to give people ads. What a great ad. Yeah yeah. It's just it's something that I always thought was super annoying about ads on live streams that it would interrupt the live stream. I thought that was ridiculous. Oh, yeah. If you want to put it on the side, that's better. Dan, is it working? There's still some that replace the stream. Ah, okay. Well, those still suck, I guess. Any luck? We are still struggling with the screen share. I can do another topic. Okay.

1:57:58Luke Lafreniere:Sorry.

1:57:59Linus Sebastian:By now, I could have logged in. New York City bans AI for students before high school. What? New York City Mayor Zoran Mondani, they're working on stuff, has announced a one-year moratorium for the 26 to 27 school year, banning students in kindergarten through eighth grade from using AI in classrooms. Okay. The policy also bans companion chatbots across all grades. New York City schools will also introduce additional limits on digital devices and a small pilot program for AI educational tools.

1:58:40Luke Lafreniere:This is just like AMD nonsense. Yeah, it is. The active signal mode is different.

1:58:49Linus Sebastian:That all seems cool and good. I think they will not be able to completely solve people from using this stuff outside of school to do things like homework or whatever else. But, I mean, removing those devices from the classroom makes sense. If a kid is there to be edumacated, if they are constantly getting their answers from some AI just outputting stuff, that doesn't feel like they're getting edumacated. So, yeah, sounds good. Is this the way? I mean, I was a pretty large supporter of getting rid of devices in schools, and this feels like a more specific version of that path. So, sure. I'm down with it.

1:59:34Linus Sebastian:More notes, just plowing through some smaller topics as we go. Graphene OS is not coming to Pixel 11. The Graphene OS team says that Google's new phones are lacking support for ARM's memory tagging extensions, or MTE, a security feature pixel phones had supported since pixel 8 in 2023 mte protects against memory safety bugs which google revealed back in 2022 accounted for over 60 percent of high severity security vulnerabilities wow the graphene os team says that their focus is likely to shift entirely to motorola devices interesting yeah what a wild turn of events for something that four years ago they said accounted for 60 % of high security vulnerabilities.

2:00:21Linus Sebastian:That doesn't seem good. I wonder how long I'm going to have my phone for. It might be forever. I might just be battery replacing for the rest of time.

2:00:34Cool.

2:00:35Linus Sebastian:Yeah. I'm ready. Okay.

2:00:37Luke Lafreniere:We are doing that now. Sounds good. I'll be careful. I'm always careful. Be careful. I'm always full of care. All right. YouTube studio here we go so what we're gonna do is we're gonna just head over into the content tab we're gonna filter by anything with like more than 10 ,000 views because that'll just filter out anything that's like channel members only or like uploaded for like a draft or whatever okay I guess you're seeing some upcoming videos nice uh all right here we go so let's start with the first one yeah which one was that i believe it was this one my wife needs a new phone now right out of the gate you can see that compared to typical channel viewership right now which is anywhere from 638 000 views on like custom water cooling nonsense to 1.6 million on Jordan's AMD Ultimate Tech Upgrade, which was a banger, by the way.

2:01:46Luke Lafreniere:That was a very good video. Make sure you guys watch it. This was a bit of an outlier. Really fun video. The comments are amazing, but just the Riley David thumbnail, I guess, didn't scream LTT to people, so maybe they just didn't even...

2:01:59Linus Sebastian:It's also Guitar Hero Controller.

2:02:01Luke Lafreniere:They're really cool, though.

2:02:03Linus Sebastian:It's cooler than I expected. I enjoyed the video. It's just

2:02:06Luke Lafreniere:insane it's like the opposite of zeitgeist so anyway anywhere from i'm gonna call this an outlier i'm gonna call this an outlier this two million dollar linus and elijah go printer shopping so let's say anywhere from seven hundred thousand two million and a half all right we good on that

2:02:23Linus Sebastian:yeah three million show whomp uh yeah now something that speaks to me is that you can see the one dan do you want to just lose us yeah so we could be great you can see the estimated revenue yes and it's it's close to jordan's yes i'm assuming the actual views are somewhere close to that range let's assume nothing so i still assumed it did really well let's go look at how i actually find

2:02:51Luke Lafreniere:a real view so we see hey we updated how views are counted so recent counts may be higher keep this in mind if i learn more it takes me to just like a support thing it doesn't actually like overlay it here i don't have a quick way oh oh yeah they've added in here okay cool uh the other way is you can go to advanced mode yeah and then this is the primary way i've seen yeah this is what they told me i was gonna have to do so it looks like the other thing is either they changed their mind or is new um so you can see your okay so we've had this problem here we go dan and i

2:03:23Linus Sebastian:were we're going through this oh that is not the same at all this is the problem dan and i were going through yeah i have my numbers here too from the api for the same thing fascinate

2:03:36Luke Lafreniere:is it just those two combined phrase interesting whereas when i go here it's like 1.3 i really do feel like youtube has rolled this out in an uncharacteristically haphazard fashion they went through engage these can you go back to the advanced view yeah i sure can is it just adding them together hold on let me add it no no it's not it's not they should be separate they should be separate lines i i have not seen it displayed this way i don't really understand what's going

2:04:01Linus Sebastian:on yeah but like is the video at 3.6 or 7 million views if you look at the channel page channel page yeah i'm just gonna do it go to the actual youtube i'm losing them oh no it's less than that it's like 3.2 yeah it's not it's not just these added together no i see it

2:04:25Luke Lafreniere:at 3.2 yeah yeah okay yeah so it's not that um so none of these numbers agree with each other at all so this is this is the same thing down i ran it to earlier also this interface is not showing the same way that it did for me when i was looking at it the other day the other day when i clicked this and i added engaged views it showed both views and engaged views together on the graph so i wonder if they've made some more changes anyway the point was just i wanted to give you guys some context for um how views track against engaged views and these uh these guidelines that i'm kind of showing you guys are not necessarily applicable to every channel so um for instance i had another content creator messaging me about this and saying that theirs were a bit of a different ratio than ours it's very different yeah um so here let's have a look at um i built a fake home theater in the tech house.

2:05:22Luke Lafreniere:This is a cool video. So James and the Byes decided on the home theater layout without me. So I got to find out watching the video, same as you guys. So this was a lower ratio of engaged views versus views.

2:05:38Linus Sebastian:Yeah.

2:05:39Luke Lafreniere:So what I might take away from this is that maybe...

2:05:47Luke Lafreniere:Is there anything you need to take away from it or is it just retention? Well, it's all sample size of one or two right now. So what I would take away from it is that, okay, retention could be one. People are like, you know, oh, it's LTT, Linus isn't in it, they click away. Or, oh, they're planning to build a real one, it's not actually just made of cardboard. I don't quite... I wouldn't wait for that. Yeah, maybe they don't feel like the thumbnail represented. People can have any different number of reasons for bouncing from a piece of content. but one of the potential reasons could be that proportionally this video has a higher number of impressions served compared to people who decided to engage with it it could just be that simple and our more niche content does tend to be like that where it'll get some okay impressions but people are just like you know what i'm not that interested in that and so it'll have fewer views even if someone might hold their mouse over it which now counts as a view now counts yeah being

2:06:40Linus Sebastian:served it at all does not count no if it shows up on your on your home page but if they accidentally

2:06:46Luke Lafreniere:autoplay it for even a fraction of a second then it counts that counts yeah so it's not exactly the same as impressions so we built the best pc is looking like the ratio is going to be more favorable we can see that right out of the gate because the money is there right the engagement's there even though the quote-unquote views are not that much higher so here we'll dig into it we go okay 1.8 but that doesn't agree with that at all yeah all of mine were different yeah fascinate okay so 1.8 versus fascinating watch hail mary no okay all right oh is that a thing

2:07:21Linus Sebastian:no it's just a couple a couple words made me think maybe oh okay um amazed amazed

2:07:28Luke Lafreniere:interesting that's closer to the that's closer to the diy home theater one or the cardboard home theater one okay I show about 70 % so my wife needs a phone was like 67 % difference and the theater room was about 70 % I wonder if yours is the more real number then it's going to be delayed it's going to be delayed about a day and it's going to be debotted currently both of those only have a wronginess figure of about three percent which means that the youtube real view count which i pull every couple hours yeah will always be a little bit higher than my delayed debotted actual count so like i don't have any data for fastest pc you build right now apart from what youtube is currently displaying but then tomorrow i'll get that first one and it takes about three to four days to stabilize but yeah i started collecting this as soon as I heard about this and looks like about 70%, which is really interesting.

2:08:33Luke Lafreniere:So 2.1 million extra views on phone and about 900 ,000 extra views on home theater room. But then if you normalize them, it's about 70%. EJC just pointed out the hover over a video counts towards your history now too and clogs it up. As a viewer, that's frustrating. Is that true? No way.

2:08:53Linus Sebastian:That's awful.

2:08:56Luke Lafreniere:that is

2:08:59Linus Sebastian:sorry did you just mention the history thing yeah yeah that's really annoying

2:09:04Luke Lafreniere:yeah mini catalyst said the same thing so that's validated

2:09:06Linus Sebastian:super annoying history should be like engaged views I think did you watch this for more than 30 seconds then sounds good if you didn't I feel like you would have added it to your watch later playlist huh

2:09:24Linus Sebastian:the algorithm alters it based on your history whoa whoa that's super annoying you know something i've noticed that's kind of funky is uh my youtube premium account is logged into our tv at home yeah and emma will watch some things on it because you know doesn't want ads sounds good I seem to have different recommendations based on the TV and other devices that makes sense it does make sense it's a different kind of content that would be more enjoyable so she'll put on like you know some like six hours of birds whatever so that the birds can hear birds sounds good it will suggest that on the TV I've never seen that suggested anywhere else so it like has device aware suggestions which kind of makes sense

2:10:21Luke Lafreniere:man remember when youtube wasn't slopped like this

2:10:30Luke Lafreniere:maybe it was always slop at least that doesn't look like ai slop so that's something yeah true uh what do we want to do next

2:10:41Linus Sebastian:Yeah, something that made me sad here is I went to the Wancho channel, which you should all go to and get subscribed at. And we had tried something slightly different with the title last week. And I was like, oh, it worked. Hooray!

2:10:58Luke Lafreniere:Got him. No. It definitely did not. No. Yeah. Nope. Yeah, that's fine. R.I.P. Yep.

2:11:15Linus Sebastian:very interesting all right that's it goodbye uh but but but speaking of goodbye steam db acquired by nexus mods steam db is an independent database offering tons of free data and stats on the entire steam catalog in an official statement steam to be co-founder uh pavel x pa the jundik explained that the increasing workload had taken a toll on him and led to burnout. After previously struggling to find a team he trusted to continue the project, he began searching for a new partner in January. Before June of 2025, Nexus Mods was an independent platform hosting user-generated content, particularly mods.

2:11:56Linus Sebastian:Founder Robin Dark1Scott, I like that we're giving their handles, sold the platform to Chosen, a growth-focused investment and acquisition group in June of 2025. Chosen's website proclaims, we acquire, we amplify, and we conquer, which probably explains why users have concerns, though they seem to have taken a relatively light touch with Nexus Mods so far, so we can see... So far as we can see. So far as we can see pretty casual users.

2:12:24Luke Lafreniere:We are pretty casual users. As far as we can tell, they seem to be taking a light approach. Got it.

2:12:30Linus Sebastian:Chosen, the firm that bought the things, says the acquisition is meant to ensure that SteamDB gets more resources and long-term stability. Yeah, that's not how things work at all, ever. So that's just a lie. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. Cool. That final statement is just purely incorrect.

2:12:48Luke Lafreniere:Can we think of an example where that was correct? I believe Toys R Us Canada actually came out ahead after a private equity investment. That's the one that springs to mind. But the private equity investment didn't buy it in order

2:13:05Linus Sebastian:to get them more resources and give them long-term stability i think it was they bought them in order to make some money well yeah yeah yeah they did that in order to make some money oh sure sure okay okay okay okay okay okay yeah yeah yeah they didn't buy them because they were just like oh no steam db oh what would life be without steam db i gotta save them no they did it because they feel like they can turn a profit which is fine it's how business works but like just come on

2:13:35Luke Lafreniere:and yeah the toys r us uh rejuvenation appears to have been temporary i think they're i think they're gone um and the u.s one was bad that was like a buy-in gut but the canadian one i thought it like yeah they were they were separate companies um okay i gotta admit i use steam db very casually i suspect that it'll be a little more annoying with more ads but i i hope that we don't see like too much major change what are the primary things that people use steam db for i look at it to see how many players are playing a thing and have been playing a thing like i use it as a way of validating okay hey is that game actually relevant does anyone care is anyone actually

2:14:24Linus Sebastian:playing it yeah but this isn't the only place you can go now you can see that with a five dollar a

2:14:29Luke Lafreniere:month subscription what about all the sales calculators and stuff like that lowest price

2:14:34Linus Sebastian:i pay twenty dollars to unlock this okay dan are you saying potentially or are you saying really this is potentially i heard you say now you can and i was like oh yeah i mean i'm gonna be right oh no i'm not yeah no i want to be clear i was not saying you were going to be i was wondering

2:14:55Luke Lafreniere:if this happened already or not that's it might as well that's the only question it might as well have oh man because everybody twisted everybody donates keys to steam db so now this company is going to have data access to every single build that gets published on every single game that it owns a key to. The reason you donate a key to SteamDB is so it owns the game and then can pull files and generate its own log histories of every single time the game is modified and what files are modified, which is why it's one of the most unreproducible websites out there. Oh, it owns tens of thousands of games.

2:15:40Luke Lafreniere:Licenses for games, Sony might say. True. very true good callback like this is really scary um it's a very very useful repository there are others but there's not going to be another one like it cool i feel like this is one of those things where just because i don't have as deep a connection to this particular part of the community i i sort of maybe underestimated the repercussions like i remember being very much like you are about when social blade got nerfed by youtube that's a huge deal trashing their api access and then all of a sudden there was just like no there was no way to reproduce that data set and now it's gone forever and the platform is more opaque because of it so basically that's what we're headed into that's what that's what's going to happen with steam tv as well yes um because it's not just used by like gamers or anybody like that it's a really useful tool for all sorts of developers or if you're doing market analysis it's also a really good way it hooks in with twitch and the game databases and stuff like that so you can see a history of and who's been playing what game and how many twitch followers that the peak has been so if you're a twitch or content creator and you're looking for games that are maybe more niche or that's really popular you can also go to steam db for that it's like an incredible resource and And yeah, I don't know what's going to happen.

2:17:08Luke Lafreniere:I mean, the smartest thing that would happen is they just take all the data and put it behind a$5 a month paywall.

2:17:17Linus Sebastian:The worst thing is if they just got it somehow. Did this site only work off donations? Was that its only income? I have no idea.

2:17:27Luke Lafreniere:I think it's very donation funded. Obviously, people donate keys. There don't appear to be any ads. There's no ads. This feels a little bit like one of those things that I look at it and go, hey, did you really have to sell this? Or could you have taken a night school course on business? They also don't have... They mostly just... It's like a wrapper for Steam's API. And that's kind of all the website is. So I don't know why they would need cash injection.

2:17:59Linus Sebastian:and maybe that's just the Chosen's talking points? I don't know. I mean, I read... Honestly, as I was reading this, it feels like they just didn't really want to do it anymore, which is often because the thing doesn't make any money and it takes a bunch of time. And it's an incredibly high-traffic tool

2:18:18Luke Lafreniere:that a lot of people use, so you can't not work on it for no money.

2:18:23Linus Sebastian:Yeah. Explaining that the increasing workload had taken a toll on him and led to burnout, which is, I'm guessing, because if it's only donations, a lot of people don't do that. I wouldn't be surprised if they made very, very little. Yeah, exactly. And donating games to the bot that it has is not... You can't buy... It does not a mouthfeed.

2:18:50Luke Lafreniere:You can't buy groceries with that. So I don't know. I hope he got a good price at least. Maybe it could be for something. I mean, he built something really useful and really cool. The thing is that if the company just wanted unfettered access to the data. Yeah, he could have just sold them API access and then like.

2:19:13Linus Sebastian:No, he also just didn't want to do it anymore. Yeah, that's fair enough. The way I'm reading this, it's increasing workload, took a toll, led to burnout. So I'm out. struggled to find a team he trusted continued to work on the project probably because they also I'm assuming wouldn't get paid much because it's just a donation site so couldn't find a team so sold it because

2:19:34Luke Lafreniere:I think about it it's like one of the most

2:19:36Linus Sebastian:popular Steam game

2:19:38Luke Lafreniere:repositories on the internet. I use it all the time I took it completely for granted. If say there's a tiny issue you're going to have tens of thousands of people jumping on you immediately to fix your site that you don't really get paid for it. So

2:19:51Linus Sebastian:So any such cases. Yeah. That's why I asked like what, what do people use it for? It wasn't a insult the question. No, no, no, no. I use it for the charts, but I was assuming because people thought this was so important and there is alternative sites to see the, like how many people are currently playing, whatever. Yeah. Cause like that can't be the important part. Steam's API.

2:20:13Luke Lafreniere:The important part, if you dig into any of it, it shows you like when the store page was updated, all of the builds of the games. And the biggest thing is that the bot, like the account, is gifted all these games, which means that they can see non-public builds. They can get access to the beta branches and stuff, which aren't public, and only can be available if you have a Steam client logged into one of these games. Because Steam pushes you updates, you can parse the files, you can extract anything you want. that's kind of I think the only place that really exists for that because it's the only place that owns this many games and has owned them for so long and has logged everything ever because you can get the charts because it's got like lowest price there's even plugins that you can get for Steam the website that show you that and like when the game was last updated because if you're looking for a dead game sometimes you can add those types of things.

2:21:20Luke Lafreniere:It shows you what time of day builds are posted. It writes its own patch notes. It detaches everything. It's an incredible resource that I hope survives this. Anyway, that's my two cents. And as Xbox's Disk to Digital feature rolls out to insiders, players are discovering it works for delisted games. letting players insert compatible Xbox One or Xbox Series X discs to receive a digital license for those games. Xbox said it's starting with thousands of titles. However, for the titles not available, the holdup is on the side of publishers as they have to opt into the program, with players already reporting that Square Enix and Ubisoft games are not yet compatible.

2:22:04Luke Lafreniere:So there are publishers with delisted games that have opted into the program? Apparently. One Twitter user reportedly got a digital license for a game that had already been delisted from the store. which others have confirmed doesn't cause any issues and still get saved in your library regardless of if it's available for purchase on the store or not discussion question xbox good it's a pretty sick feature that's really cool yeah that was just that was it that was just some

2:22:29Linus Sebastian:that was some good news palette cleanser yeah all four xbox users can be like really stoked about

2:22:34Luke Lafreniere:that you talked about ai being banned before high school right yes okay kill kill this is fun uh This is just like kind of a pen pal, sort of. I don't know, whatever. He's emailed me a couple times. Don't really know the guy. But he was just like, oh, I like build stuff. And I also like badminton. Would you like to see the robot arm shuttlecock launcher I made? And I was like, yes, I would. And so he sent me his video. And it flings them really fast. and um that's it i don't know go go watch it it's pretty neat yeah i don't know man every once in a while someone just sends me something i'm like that's pretty cool that doesn't have enough views someone should watch that cool i do have premium i just don't have it on my when show one laptop account i can only buy so many copies of premium i've told youtube at least on a dozen occasions make a g suite premium option i will opt in i will be happy to cover actually mind-blowing it is

2:23:45Linus Sebastian:insane yeah that it doesn't exist it's really really wild you pay a ton for the g suite subscription and even if you had to pay more for it the fact that we have to watch ads on our work

2:23:57Luke Lafreniere:accounts is crazy without going through and like painstakingly buying youtube premium on them like

2:24:04Linus Sebastian:it's i constantly get pissed because i'll i'll open a video on my work account for work reasons and then have to go uh and copy the url go to my personal browser open it there and then watch it

2:24:15Luke Lafreniere:it's like what is happening oh man um you know what i'm gonna just kibosh this one uh let's talk about dlss5 hey do you want to get even less performance out of older rtx cards you're in luck modders now have dlss 5 working on rtx 20 and 30 series gpus running fp16 this new implementation is said to be an improvement over an early fp8 version that saw frame rates drop from as high as 138 to just 4 fps in deep rock galactic nice modders have also demonstrated dlss 5 in direct x11 games with no native dlss implementation like batman arkham knight and even in dx9 and vulcan titles and even console emulators our discussion question is was anyone asking for this who is this for um i also want to jump in and clarify something really quick i've seen dlss 5 even used for like webcam outputs that is not dlss 5 it hasn't been tuned the game developer should be involved in that process and also dls s5 in its like properly functioning form needs vector data so there ain't no way that your webcam output has vector data so yeah someone's gonna someone's gonna

2:25:40Linus Sebastian:try to build some junk

2:25:47Luke Lafreniere:anyway i'll use ai to extract vector data from the video feed and then i'll use ai to take that vector data and yeah yeah yeah someone's gonna find a way uh i've seen a couple things like

2:26:02Linus Sebastian:dlss 5 cyberpunk and man it looks god-awful but i'm mostly going to reserve my judgment for games that come out with it that were intended to have it. Did you watch our video? No.

2:26:14Luke Lafreniere:That's fine. Okay, no. I was trying to think if I did or not, but no. So, depending on how the sliders are tuned, David, greatest of all time EA, was... I like that. Has like, I think they ended up getting about half a dozen games working with it. And they took the time to play around with the sliders. Find those that look good. Show it working really bad, like how a lot of other people are sort of vilifying it, making it look really bad. And also finding settings and finding situations where it actually looks really good. And Cyberpunk, main characters, no. NPCs, yes. Yeah, we talked about that one.

2:27:00Luke Lafreniere:Yeah, I was pretty impressed by that. What's up?

2:27:05Linus Sebastian:I got like frame one by Cloud.

2:27:08Luke Lafreniere:oh yeah the yas cloud yeah yeah so i think dlss5 figures he's a chick yeah you you had mentioned that but i hadn't seen it before yeah now the one on the right also has a lighting mod applied to it it's not just and the one on the left is the vanilla game that does not have the lighting mod so it's a little bit of an apples to apple flavored oranges comparison. But wow, is that ever a difference, eh? Apples to apple flavored oranges. I've never heard that before, but I like it. I don't think anyone's ever heard that before. Yeah. In other news, do we want to talk about the massive Steam leak? They should have fixed that valve.

2:27:54Luke Lafreniere:Over the weekend, roughly 12 to 13 terabytes of Steam server content from 2003 to 2013 was leaked online. It is important to note this was not a hack or a data breach. The files were just sitting on an old Steam 2 content distribution server that had apparently been left online with an unlocked endpoint. This also explains the date range of the content leaked since in 2013, Valve migrated off of Steam 2 servers to its current distribution system, Steam Pipe. Who got access first? It's actually unclear who originally found the accessible server. However, Valve content creator Skulser and dataminer creator Gabe Follower raised awareness of the leaks, with Gabe Follower corroborating Skulser's account of the leaks being an unlocked server endpoint.

2:28:39Luke Lafreniere:Because Steam 2 was the pipeline, both for Valve and third-party publishers that they used to get content onto Steam, the leaks are not exclusively Valve titles. They include assets, cut and unreleased development material, and even early playable builds from both Valve and third-party publishers. Notable Valve leaks include a lot of unseen and cut Portal 2 content, like in-game sequences, voice lines, and animations, and especially cool as a model for a concept weapon rumored to have been from the cancelled third episode of Half-Life 2 called the Weaponizer that Valve was using as a placeholder in Portal 2.

2:29:18Luke Lafreniere:An early build showing a scrapped prequel concept for Portal called F-Stop showed up, where players solve puzzles using a camera to resize and manipulate objects instead of a portal gun. There's also a pre-nerfed Left 4 Dead build that contains different voice lines, altered map sections, and a different HUD. There's an early CSGO build, and never-before-seen maps, and much, much more. In addition, Hidden Palace game preservationists slash archivists have been cataloging the leaks and identified numerous depots with obtainable builds for Sid Meier's Civilization V, Mafia 2, GTA 3, Spec Ops The Lion, and an early beta build of Sonic 4 Episode 2.

2:30:01Luke Lafreniere:Now, our discussion question is, well, actually, there are two angles for the discussion. Game preservationists are celebrating the Steam leaks as they're a treasure trove of gaming history that can now be preserved. Considering these leaks contain a lot of canceled or unreleased content that otherwise would not have been accessible to the public and potentially lost to history, should there be a better framework for preserving unreleased work? And would any publisher ever actually agree to one? Totally not. Yeah. And no, I'm actually, this is going to be. I don't think there should be. This is going to be super controversial.

2:30:33Luke Lafreniere:Maybe. I fully support companies releasing pre-published work and concept art and concept files and whatever else, but I actually am not supportive of forcing them to do anything like that. I think if we're going to have respect for the art we have to have respect for letting the artists cook for as long as their corporate overlords will allow them to and create the best finished product they can

2:31:05Linus Sebastian:you also might just really hate something about what you had and then be really happy that you updated it and never released it in that state and now that thing that you never wanted to see the light of day is now being preserved and that just sucks try to apply that to anything

2:31:21Luke Lafreniere:you've done um tuna fish six in float plane chat says i demand beta mona lisa

2:31:32Linus Sebastian:yeah i mean that would be preserved a thousand percent i also like i don't yeah i don't uh i'm not surprised i don't even necessarily blame the reservists preservists i guess um but yeah i i wouldn't want that number two if somebody just had like every failed take of every video i've ever done it's like bro yeah no like why yeah can we can we not yeah yeah

2:32:01Luke Lafreniere:number two the leaks occurred seemingly because valve forgot a server was still running and failed to ensure that the endpoint was locked do you think this is more of a result of the scale that valve operates on or is it sort of a if it can happen to valve it can happen to you reminder to secure your servers i think it's both yeah it's definitely both i mean the if it if it can

2:32:22Linus Sebastian:happen to valve can happen to you thing is is i bring this up often um i think you know let's talk about the lab we're going to talk about them again soon but let's talk about the lab the lab still has errors everybody has some amount of errors we've been working on it uh this will be a a continual forever project just trying to reduce output of errors from the lab but the sheer amount of data that we generate there's going to be some errors in it and one of my favorite example of like look we do be humans was the one of the errors in one of our videos for the 5000 series gpu launch was an official nvidia slide that had incorrect information on it so the error was that we just believed nvidia took their spec information and put it on screen which was literally a copy paste of a slide and it happened to be wrong and you can extrapolate the argument to like if it can happen to nvidia then it can probably happen to anybody

2:33:21Luke Lafreniere:if it can happen to a trillion dollar company that doesn't mean you should let your guard down um keep trying to do better yes and there were at times where we did there was a lot um but

2:33:34Linus Sebastian:But yeah, we're continually working on it being less.

2:33:37Luke Lafreniere:Hey, speaking of LTT Labs, there's a couple of fun articles you guys might want to check out. We happened to have to delid a 14900KS for an unrelated project. You got to scroll down more on this one. And we thought, what the hey-oh?

2:33:49Linus Sebastian:Oh, layer slices. The first one that says layer slices, that's a video. Here we go. Watch this from start to finish.

2:33:55Luke Lafreniere:So they chucked it in the CT scanner. I've already seen on the forum um someone requesting like high resolution capture of this for desktop background lucas replied like immediately and was like here you go yeah um so yeah go you can go you can go check that out if

2:34:14Linus Sebastian:you're into just like ct scans of super cool stuff that layer one just feels like a loading screen to

2:34:20Luke Lafreniere:a game or something it's so sick also yeah is our guide to switching to linux and grieving windows so this will probably be converted into a video at some point over the next little bit if you're more into video but if you're not hey lttlabs.com go check it out they're doing some really great

2:34:38Linus Sebastian:work i want to add some quick asterisks to the linux one there's already been some comments about this because we tend to post these publicly as well um we're like oh you said this thing maybe it could have had x y and z explainers to go along with it one of the many problems about talking about Linux is every single word is its own rabbit hole.

2:34:58Luke Lafreniere:I know.

2:34:59Linus Sebastian:So we did what we could.

2:35:00Luke Lafreniere:I think what you're referring to as Linux is in fact GNU slash Linux or as I've taken to calling it.

2:35:06Linus Sebastian:Yeah. And then extrapolate that to everything. Every single word, every single software choice, every single little tiny thing can be debated into the end of the earth. So we did what we could while also making the article readable. And if you have opinions about it, whatever, you know, there's going to be comments.

2:35:21Luke Lafreniere:Let's discuss it, but be respectful or.

2:35:25Linus Sebastian:Well, I mean, you can give us feedback. I don't mind the feedback. That's all I'm asking. Yeah, just understand the confines we're dealing with is we're trying to make a readable document. And if we really went down every rabbit hole, every path as we were writing, it would have been like hundreds of pages long.

2:35:41Luke Lafreniere:We'd be as insufferable as the worst Redditor you know.

2:35:44Linus Sebastian:Yeah. So it's not worth it. There's a balancing act. And just like the previous discussion that I had about labs, sometimes the balance will be slightly off. I think this time it was pretty good, but sometimes the balance will be slightly off and just keep talking to us, letting us know.

2:35:58Luke Lafreniere:Yeah, we'll do our best. Yeah. Hey, speaking of doing their best, I've dunked on Plex a lot over the years.

2:36:07Linus Sebastian:Yeah.

2:36:08Luke Lafreniere:They finally fixed their downloads. Hasn't this been one of your things? This is one of my things that I told them I will not work with you again until you fix downloads. Hey. And there have been just basic things about the downloads feature that have been broken for, I kid you not, years. Like one, for instance, is that things would fail out and then there would be, like, I kid you not, if one of the 10 episodes of a season failed, there would be no way to retry that one. And also, why do I have to click retry? F***ing obviously, I told you download, just retry it. Retry it until it's done. I want it done.

2:36:48Luke Lafreniere:Also, what is so complicated about this? Run all your transcoding over there get it done and then send it to me and then for a while it was like kind of fixed but the interface was horrible like they got rid of the ability to browse like your like your media with your thumbnails and everything and you just like went to downloads and it literally wouldn't even autoplay the next one like it was so bad like it was just a list of files but like even worse than vlc um anyway downloads finally works again um it shows like a proper indicator of all your transcodes if one didn't work you can just click retry and it will retry that one and you can use the actual like media navigation interface now offline again like you used to be able to back so they've taken the fix to the actual downloading the files and the fix to navigating the media interface rather than just having a crappy list that doesn't even play the next one and they seem to have merged them and at least on android it's actually working now that's um you know what i

2:37:53Linus Sebastian:got to give them credit where it's due other things do you have that they need to do oh lordy

2:37:58Luke Lafreniere:uh i have a whole i have a whole list oh god of things that need to work before i'll be willing to work with them again i'll use the product but um i think it was an email chain with sven like to give you guys some context Sven doesn't even work in the business team anymore and that's how far okay that was a recent thing though he works for the writing department yeah um okay here we go the following are my major gripes the email is this long

2:38:32uh

2:38:33Luke Lafreniere:I think they still haven't fixed the significantly reduced audio volume when transcoding compared to playing at original quality No biometric sign in for accounts Remembering where I left off is broken a lot of times That's actually a little bit better now Yeah, there's still a fair bit of stuff Oh man Oh man Oh man Okay, well, whatever Hey, the 24-pin ATX connector Could finally be going away Or not What is it being replaced with? We're getting a new 12-volt only standard 12 volt only v3 and what's cool about it is the hello can what do you what is what is happening

2:39:15Linus Sebastian:right now hello i can fully accept that i am wrong here yeah i can't i kind of like 24 pins

2:39:22Luke Lafreniere:i don't mind um yeah but i'm wrong about that yeah and that's okay okay cool so 12 volt only

2:39:30Linus Sebastian:is way more efficient oh okay well that's good yeah is it uh is it just like uh mostly at mostly

2:39:38Luke Lafreniere:at idle actually. Is it going to catch on fire? So it does appear to be one of the little mini connectors. Which I was pretty disappointed to find out. So here it is. I don't understand why. It would be cool if we just didn't do that. Like could we just use this one? Is this really that much smaller than this? This feels like when we got rid of USB Mini B from Micro B. I was like is it really that much smaller that we need this fragile horrible connector? Can we just use Mini B? And the answer apparently was no. No we can't.

2:40:26Luke Lafreniere:My bigger issue with this or my biggest issue is that we're sticking with 12 volt. If we're going to create a new standard that is physically incompatible why are we not going all the way and going to 48 volt yeah jump yeah yeah that that's what i want uh al lon says mini to micro wasn't for the size it was rated for many more insertions and less fragile absolute nonsense i honestly my my i know it was rated for more but they were wrong

2:40:56Linus Sebastian:my far too little numbers i should feel bad sample size too small is i had more issues with many than micro personally you know that's the wrong way they don't know that walk through a wall

2:41:12Luke Lafreniere:i'd have to walk past you guys i'd have to walk past the camera um i am aware that micro was supposedly more durable that was not my experience with it at all i have nothing just outside of my own experience on that i don't know people wow chad is getting really into this some people are highly opinionated about this fascinating age john says micro b it's shit compared to mini b full stop and then uh hold on uh someone else said uh dax says mini is so much better than micro oh wait that's the same uh someone someone disagreed the other way it wasn't just everyone fresh doctor with the freshest take i hated both not gonna lie yeah that's fair i didn't say i didn't hate them there was a reason lightning needed to exist and it was um like it's so funny watching people dunk on lightning after usbc like yeah iphone sucks lightning mobile but it's like yeah the only reason apple needed to invent lightning was because what we had before was

2:42:15Linus Sebastian:trash i unironically liked lightning i just wish it was more open lightning is awesome yeah uh we just everything switched to lightning i would have been pretty okay with it i liked i don't know that i still do i think us good usbc cables are have kind of transformed a little bit but um i liked lightning more than usbc when it first came out as just like a you the usability of the

2:42:38Luke Lafreniere:connector um yeah i'll do in a sec researchers at the korean advanced institute of science and technology have built a smartphone clip-on device called sweep led that costs just seven dollars and turns your phone into a hidden camera detector. Illegal spy cams have been a pervasive issue in South Korea with mass protests taking place in 2018, particularly regarding the absurd amount of them in public restrooms. The standard method of finding hidden cameras is to manually shine a flashlight around a room and watch for a small glint or reflection shining back at you. That's tough, though. This works because a camera lens is retroreflective and bounces light back along the same path it came in on.

2:43:18Luke Lafreniere:The problem with this is that it can lead to false positives, So the team designed an LED array that uses deep learning to catch the unique reflections that occur exclusively when a camera lens is shined on. I just thought this was cool. That's really awesome. There was nothing other than that. And I just wanted to highlight that. I just thought it was really neat. That's wicked. And you know what else is neat is talking to you about our sponsors. Motion Gray. 2:45:45Luke Lafreniere:Oh, no! No! Oh, man. So, X-Blade got the first ever live WAN show read by Luke in the history of the entire WAN show. No, that's not true. No, no, that's not true. Because he's hosted it without me before in the history of the entire WAN show. It's just been, man, we've got to be over five years on the streak, don't we? That might be the first. when you're both there that might be that might be yeah maybe that's crazy maybe you were busy non-mandatory live read i don't know that's crazy yeah it's still historic i just wanted to chew my arm off while you were doing it i was just like i don't know what to do right now it sounded really good though you said you're not a voice actor but you know that sounded great it sounded

2:46:26Linus Sebastian:like an ad yeah good job hell yeah there's um uh i wasn't gonna say i think maybe there's been times where you had to like go run and grab something so i did an ad oh yeah but i've never heard you do it yes yes yes that for sure i feel like that might be legitimately the first time

2:46:41Luke Lafreniere:you've sat through me doing a way if my butt's in the chair i'm reading the ad yeah generally speaking yeah um holy crap we never did the float plane announcements oh which strong boy can help me play this clip is this this is looks like the ai sloppest crap this isn't even our

2:47:05Linus Sebastian:channel what is this I lost my presence I lost my height I lost my size I lost my Fear factor Remember Who you are

2:47:34Luke Lafreniere:Okay

2:47:39Linus Sebastian:Sammy what are you doing

2:47:42Luke Lafreniere:I had to prep for that Um What's the point Okay I think I get it You'll get it I'll read it Fuck! Yvonne and I got some chickens two months ago, and Sammy went down today to go see the chickens, and I will now put the video live. Oh, that's a fast edit.

2:48:05Linus Sebastian:Okay.

2:48:06Luke Lafreniere:Yep, so here's Sammy with the chicken on his back. That's fair. And public, it is now live. Yvonne and Linus have chickens. Yeah, you didn't read that wrong. they got egg incubators from a program that lets you hatch eggs with everything provided and although most people send the chickens back after they hatch they decided to keep theirs yeah i called that by the way so you can you can meet our chickens now uh thanks to sammy through the power of float plane that's how i got my chickens chicken distribution system so you can not only get the float plane hoodie you can get those chickens too what am i looking at here what is Look at all them chickens.

2:48:44Linus Sebastian:I don't have it playing. There we go. Look at all those chickens.

2:48:46Luke Lafreniere:Thanks, Dan.

2:48:47Linus Sebastian:Now you're a voice hacker.

2:48:50Luke Lafreniere:Okay, I mean, you know what? I believe it. I believe that's what she sounded like. Check out the ugly cute chickens at lmg.gg slash fpwan. He says, I kept it short because you guys bullied me for my notes.

2:49:05Linus Sebastian:I feel like we just did that again. I feel like they did not get better. I feel like they made it got worse. Do you know why? He just posted like random AI short from somebody else on the show. Yeah. Do you know why he played that short? No.

2:49:18Luke Lafreniere:Because chickens and dinosaurs, blah, blah, blah. I don't want to get that. Apparently Yvonne plays that to your chickens. She does not. There's no way. No, that's not true. I literally don't believe that. Yvonne would never have any awareness that that clip ever existed. I completely agree. I'm kind of curious about this video though. Call it Sammy a liar. Yeah. there's our chickens oh my goodness hi chickies have you trained them to come running to you when you shake the like we did not need to train them to do that yeah they just kind of they definitely do it though so here's the chicken coop that uh she's got she's got shorts on her phone did you follow like a kit or a plan or something um so yvonne found on facebook marketplace this okay it's like a kid's thing okay and then we modified it to like not have a window on this side and have a nesting box here i still need to put a roof on it i am aware that even stained plywood is not water tight this is cedar by the way so this should be fine yeah uh but i need to put a proper roof on it and then hasn't been that rainy luckily yeah yeah i've still got a little bit of time yeah wow this is a long video it's 15 minute video about chickens uh they're super friendly i had no idea how sociable they were going to be oh yeah they're so lovely yeah have they gone in the pool yet uh no they have not gone in the pool are you gonna get them their own little mini pool for their hut um no probably not what a reasonable answer your work those are you have a few different kinds yeah they're just randoms yeah yeah those are the best when you get like the weird you got the randoms yeah apparently they're easter eggers all of them though so we should get interesting colored eggs none of them are laying yet though cool yep so they're yeah they're good girls and uh we're we're actually kind of enjoying chicken ownership so far i know it's

2:51:13Linus Sebastian:roasted me for birds for so long boy bird boy and then built a little breeding box and i know

2:51:21Luke Lafreniere:it needs a roof but i have to do that because i love to upgrade it i have uh i have chicken water stabilizer uh water protector and i've got like new uh feeding things and watering things coming and you're gonna i'm planning to do some home automation stuff i was gonna ask you to hold kit their place i'm gonna yeah i'm gonna get uh i'm gonna get a heated hose so that i can set up like an auto water topper upper and like i'm gonna have a whole thing and then like when the valve goes then i can get a notification so i can go put new water stabilizer in and stuff it's gonna be great you could automate the dispensing of the water stabilizer i could yeah fish pumps have little like micro things that maintain stuff the sky is the limit jk they can't fly they fly a little bit if you throw them they can they can almost hover they have they have slow fall

2:52:22Linus Sebastian:oh that's that's all the requests i have of you i think with that we're is after dark yeah after blue do we do the what oh no i decided not to i'm over it

2:52:39Luke Lafreniere:basically people stole some stuff from gamescom developers like indie developers and that was lame that is super and i had picked it as a topic because i was going to talk about how some of our laptops got stolen on ltx at ltx in the past and that was super lame too and like yo like if you're trying to stick it to the man you found the wrong man it's not cool to like go to small time events and steal things from people who are there exhibiting a lot of them most of them like

2:53:05Linus Sebastian:don't have a ton of money and almost every con i know is like mostly doing it just for the love of the game like they're not they're not hugely profitable endeavors and they're incredibly

2:53:17Luke Lafreniere:difficult and a lot of the exhibitors are also there because they like really need to be there not because they're just like swimming in money yeah so not cool that's all yeah oh look it's purple now oh by east one says i'm surprised there's been no mention of the

2:53:35Linus Sebastian:new apple ceo it's because we did a whole video about it someone in flow plane chat mentioned like i can't believe you guys didn't mention like the most important linux news of all time and then i never saw i saw multiple people including myself go like of what yeah are you I never saw anyone clarify. I might have missed the message, but I have no idea what they're talking about. It's got ads now.

2:54:00Luke Lafreniere:Hey, Wook Wan and guest. Luke, if you get your license, which float plane would you buy? DHC Beaver. Beavers are great. Twatter. Also, thanks Linus for listening to my sales pitch at Whale Land. Appreciate the advice. um i would get the same one that i flew already beaver beaver uh hold on uh linus flying pc because i would just want all of my float planes to match luke um what would you fly i would get this one oh yeah that's cool by the way belongs to luke and someday he will take it back from me but for now i am holding on to it for him this is yeah this is this is not the well come on ad

2:54:50Linus Sebastian:eight years ago yeah it's still in his garage eight years ago what set is this uh this is mid construction this is a door i recognize that plant yeah i think we did that

2:55:03Luke Lafreniere:blue door multiple times what was that blue door from though did we just like get doors yeah what was this oh this is no this is when the um uh i think this is when the living room was being built

2:55:20Linus Sebastian:hello can this play please yeah i was having issues earlier too i don't know what's going on with the youtubes right now hello they may be having a lot of issues considering their the dashboard view count things that were acting strange this is not my answer my answer is just the normal beaver but look at this look at this crazy what i don't know circa 1959 twin beaver

2:55:44Luke Lafreniere:so if you flew that does your body count go up by two

2:55:51Luke Lafreniere:do you do two notches in your belt like i'm just wondering how this works you know as they say eight legs this is very no I'm not going to finish the quote

2:56:04Linus Sebastian:first post of April did I just get owned maybe maybe not

2:56:15Linus Sebastian:experiment tell if this is nope it's real I feel like this is going to be a troll okay I think these are all fake that's gotta be i think some games gotta be fake but yeah the beaver um in no small part because i know nothing about the planes at all but the name sounds cool so here's uh so i think this was a beaver they're very canadian yeah yeah dhc2 beaver yeah so those are those are cool and have cool

2:56:46Luke Lafreniere:names and the only one i know of so alex and i um built a computer into it and then uh flew it and then we're going to need to...

2:56:56Linus Sebastian:I think I flew it as well.

2:56:57Luke Lafreniere:No, you never flew it. What? I still have to teach you how to fly it. You do not know how to fly, I don't think. You came with us. Isn't that me? That's you. You're right there, but you didn't fly it. What? Why? Because you don't know how. Oh. Why would you think you know how? I don't know. Do you know how? No. That's what I'm talking about. But my ignorance makes me not know how difficult it is. Maybe I gave you the stick for like a couple seconds. No, all I remember was coming out here. I think we hit a duck. No way. I think we did. I think we did hit a duck at some point. Dude, we have made so many videos over the years and so much insane.

2:57:38Luke Lafreniere:Oh, you can put us back then. So much insane stuff has happened over the years that I cannot keep track of it all anymore. Yeah, me neither. Oh, by the way, we put an FPV camera in it. Not FPV rather, but like just a recording camera because I didn't have FPV tech at that time. Someone did. A GoPro? Yeah, I think we just chucked a GoPro in the front. Markiplier would be proud. Check this out. How cool is that? It feels so real.

2:58:06Linus Sebastian:It is real. That's a real plane, man. This feels like the special effect from like a super low budget movie from a long time ago. Oh, there's a plane crash. How do we film it? Oh, no. and it would rapidly cut from that to like people in the cabin shaking around

2:58:24Luke Lafreniere:yeah are they just wiggling the camera yeah yeah okay let me see if i can find the spot where we hit the duck you know what i can't find it right i'm deciding it no no no he found it for you oh did he 1447 1447 and what 1510 1447 to 1510 okay here we go here we go ready Ready?

2:58:48Linus Sebastian:Skipped over a duck.

2:58:50Luke Lafreniere:No, I think we hit it because there was like some damage, I think. Yeah, I'm sorry, duck. 1447. Oh, yeah, here we go. Here we go. Here we go.

2:59:01Linus Sebastian:Skipped over.

2:59:03Luke Lafreniere:Oh, no. Yeah, no, we didn't hit the duck.

2:59:04Linus Sebastian:Yeah, the duck bailed out.

2:59:06Luke Lafreniere:Okay. All right. Almost hit a duck. Good job, duck. The duck ducked. Quality comment, by the way.

2:59:16Luke Lafreniere:I have not done that much RC flying, so that was about as good a landing as we were going to get from me.

2:59:21Linus Sebastian:So I have done additional minor amount of research, and the beaver is the only float plane I have also been in.

2:59:27Luke Lafreniere:Okay.

2:59:28Linus Sebastian:I've been in a real one, flown around. So you might say we're beaver boys. Beaver enthusiasts. I was given a picture of a beaver flying. Yeah, really? Can they do that? by Emma's dad for I think it was Christmas or her birthday. I don't remember which. So definitely the beaver. I thought they were furred, not feathered. You have to find a mythical one, a rare quality. I mean, on the internet, aren't they all?

3:00:06Luke Lafreniere:Oh, Lordy. can you can you figure out why we have so few women who watch us i was so ready for like a real question and then it was like oh yeah you should know me better than that yeah oh lordy how about next it's not for a lack of being ourselves

3:00:41Luke Lafreniere:Jade Willow says in float plane chat You are officially too old to be this much Of a child, Ella Mayo

3:00:47Linus Sebastian:You're never too old

3:00:52Luke Lafreniere:My grandfather never grew up Alright, hit me Dan Linus, what is a feature or design choice On an LTT store product where you had to compromise your quote-unquote ideal vision because manufacturing realities or costs completely forced your hand oh that's an interesting one um i don't know if i can answer that question specifically but i can definitely talk about some situations where the branding has been kind of a complicated discussion the uh the screwdriver was one of them we ideally wanted the screwdriver to be something that was really easy to rebrand for uh like white label products so like other excuse me other creators could just have ltt screwdriver but they put their own logo coin in the top or they they have their own like easily changeable mold that we could do really low minimum order quantities on and stuff like that and there just was not an economical way to do it just straight up um one that i uh there's at least one creator that's interested oh really yeah oh that would be cool i'd be super down we'd be i'd be very supportive as long as they can connected them to internal representatives cool we'll see if it happens um oh the pen uh does anyone have a scribe driver handy no hey you got one dan thanks sorry my tech sack's not here otherwise i would okay um so oh no yours is right okay no this was something i didn't think we weren't going to be able to do is get the ltc logo right side up on them but then i think we like found a way yeah i think my first one's like angled or is it maybe we didn't find a way then maybe dan just got lucky because keying it was like going to be cost prohibitive mine's also very old uh there's a oh and potentially a sample a clothing one there's a there's a lot of clothing stuff like this so uh we have uh like a kind of a patterned shirt like an all-over patterned shirt coming soon that i i asked the i asked the ladies i was like so could we have it line up and they were like how much fabric do you want to incinerate when we're done making these.

3:03:10Luke Lafreniere:Oh. Because it limits how they can cut. Okay. There's still certain things you want to do. You want it like right side up at least and stuff. Like you don't want to just cut any which way to completely maximize your usage. But a lot of the cost of like a very high-end shirt that has like a stripe that goes across the arm and across the chest and across the other arm is actually how much wasted fabric there is from them doing that which so we make an active choice not to bother doing that um because i'm i don't mind spending money i don't like i don't like wasting it i don't mind using stuff feels like it's pretty antithetical to the whole reuse thing yeah i mean we not that that is a 100 % hard

3:03:56Linus Sebastian:line but it feels like too far in the opposite direction i think it just feels really unnecessary

3:04:02Luke Lafreniere:exactly yeah yeah and and we i've always tried to be just like you know kind of kind of pragmatic so there's I guess what I'm what I'm getting at here is there's all kinds of these sorts of conversations that take place around just like you know how we can how we can do branding how we can utilize materials efficiently is there just like an I forget there used to be like an all products link I can't find it right now it's what sorry I said it's under socks what a dick um it just slipped out i'm so sorry all products there i found it uh yeah branding uh the screwdriver was one that we no there's one that we talked about like not branding at all this was one this was one that uh that we thought about a lot because it happens that the branding is right at the very end where you'll have less hook and loop and i was like do we really have to brand it at all and we're like yeah we probably should and we were right to do that load more oops what the there we go cool um yeah we don't need to talk about this anymore that's fine okay that's a great picture

3:05:24Linus Sebastian:you look so happy what oh yeah flip plane stuff i was cool beans

3:05:31Luke Lafreniere:hi lld are there any updates on stock for the multi-pocket leggings also if any of you You've been interested in the War Dogs beta. Oh, no, I have not seen War Dogs beta stuff. I don't even know what War Dogs is, to be perfectly blunt with you.

3:05:49Linus Sebastian:I'm looking because I don't know either.

3:05:52Luke Lafreniere:Oh, this is an upcoming one. But Tynan and I had a very spirited discussion that ended in, I think we ended up agreeing. He was right about some stuff and I was right about some stuff, which is the best kind of spirited discussion. and the HDMI and DisplayPort cables are going to still have LTT branding, but I think it's going to be like less prominent or something because we have to fit the, like the, in order to like license it properly, you have to like do it their way. But then we also want to do our plain text, easy to understand way. And then we also need LTT branding. So I think that there's two different ends of the cable now.

3:06:32Luke Lafreniere:Each has an LTT on the end, on the one side. and then each has either the DisplayPort slash HDMI version and our version or something. And it contains all the information or something. I can't remember what we settled on, but it was like, it was the best solution. And both people had good ideas and ideas that the other person had a better idea than. And I think we came up with a really good one. Cool. So it's just, it's always a balance between functionality and trying to build something that, you know, people actually recognize. Oh yeah, so here's the cable management arches. That's the one I've been searching for.

3:07:08Luke Lafreniere:Finding a way. I refused to put branding on the outside of the cable management arches. It's under it, right? It's on the underside. Because I thought this would look like absolute dog butt. It probably would have. You were correct. So these ended up being an almost completely unbranded product, which totally blows for like your branding, obviously. So you can see we just have like little stuff on the bottom. So yeah, buy cable management arches. We make them. um but yeah don't worry about the fact that there's no branding on them sorry about that there see yeah i i that was that was a really tough decision to make as a team yeah but we explored every option we were like we cannot put this on the top sorry about that but if

3:07:50Linus Sebastian:if there was big freaking brand logos on my cable management stuff i think i'd be pissed yep every single one every four four inches you know i i do think there's a value to tasteful

3:08:01Luke Lafreniere:branding though honestly yeah a little tiny screen print on the side would have been fine the tasteful branding for that product is to put it on the bottom like you guys did yeah we we do genuinely try whenever i see someone complain that they don't buy like ltt store merchandise because they just like hate uh really obtrusive branding it's pretty subtle bro what are you even talking about find me the branding on this yeah do we still have any of these these are super cute you should buy them before they're gone because i don't think we're going to reorder them yeah we still have some they're so cute my cats love theirs okay hey chicken mitten and daniel luke what is your favorite reliant case on you guys make any good lawn mowing chore enjoyable so i'll hear this sometime next week lol gonna use these on a super soft for the wife uh sadie hawkins

3:08:55Linus Sebastian:dance that is such a basic pick it's the only song i remember all right i'd have to look up i even had to google it to make sure it was even from that band do you like my sweater is that wait what that's from the song okay um okay songs

3:09:21Linus Sebastian:yeah i don't know i don't remember these other ones i just remember sadie hawkins dance

3:09:24Luke Lafreniere:Okay, more. Hit me, Dan.

3:09:27Linus Sebastian:Hey, L and L and D.

3:09:29Luke Lafreniere:I was asking myself the other day, if Gemini is inferior to Google Assistant, why is Google choosing to push it out at this stage of development? I've noticed multiple errors in the OG wouldn't do. I don't know. That's... What a... If we could answer that, man, do you think we'd be sitting here on some podcast on a Friday night? Oh, man. We'd be sipping champagne on some yacht somewhere. Surrounded by - I would be. Horns of eunuchs. You guys would not be drinking champagne. Yeah, that's true. But we'd be able to. Name brand cola. Sparkling apple juice. No, I - You know that we wouldn't drink either of those things.

3:10:17Luke Lafreniere:It would be the finest - Water. The finest mineral water. Imported mineral water. the finest still in their own water you know what i want that over champagne to be perfectly honest i've come around to sparkling water i've officially entered my dad phase tv static water isn't that bad so so i started on boobly bubbly whatever that stuff is called because it was a way of weaning myself off soda and iced tea because i would put it in the same fridge where we that we stock for guests and then anytime i went to that fridge i'd be like no don't take that take this and what started as like the cure became the disease.

3:10:55Luke Lafreniere:I'm kind of hooked on it.

3:10:56Linus Sebastian:Almost everyone in my family freaking loves it. Like whatever they're called, Stevia's or whatever. Is that what they're called? There's some brand. Stevia is an artificial sweetener. Yeah, I know. What's the drink? There's La Croix. No, not that one. I don't know. Whatever. It's some sparkling water. You know, the flavor. Zevia. That's it. What the hell is a Zevia? Zevia. They love this stuff. oh okay um and it's just it's just sparkling water or does it have flavors in it i don't know i think it's sparkling water with flavors don't consider this a um this is not an endorsement i mean my my response to this is going to say every time i take a sip i get involuntary shakes this is

3:11:39Luke Lafreniere:not an endorsement why do you keep drinking it then i don't it's just you know uh every once

3:11:47Linus Sebastian:in a while they'll be like this one's really good you should try it then i'll be like sip don't like it take it back do you just not like carbonation hate it okay all right yeah hate it

3:11:57Luke Lafreniere:my kids don't like it either i have carbonation in general what does that mean not carbonation

3:12:01Linus Sebastian:in general and that's where it makes no sense to me because like i used to love pop i haven't really drank in pop much in many many years but i used to love pop and so it's not just carbonation in general it seems to be when it's yeah it's just sparkling water with just no like sweetener you're just not like not used to it i think it's the syrup must change something do you like uh just sparkling water no because when when you're saying hate it when you're saying

3:12:28Luke Lafreniere:sparkling water i'm thinking of like water that has sparkles in it not flavored no no carbonation carbonation yeah like that's he's saying he doesn't like carbonated water i meant no sparkles no club soda yeah yeah club soda but like a buble has flavors and stuff in it but it's like kind of enough it's it's it's like the memory of what a flavor yeah i always call it like like a

3:12:53Linus Sebastian:like a memory of strawberries light and i'm assuming the like heavier syrups i'm guessing it's heavier i have no idea it would be a lot heavier something about the syrups on like sodas is enough to counteract whatever that is well because you're tasting the carbon dioxide

3:13:08Luke Lafreniere:i don't drink any of it much i just drink flat water all the time but when you're but if you're used to the idea that like sparkling beverages are sweet and you go and drink one and it's like something's wrong because this sparkling beverage is not sweet.

3:13:24Linus Sebastian:No it like tastes disgusting to me. The water. And gives me like revulsion chips.

3:13:29Luke Lafreniere:I know what you're talking about with the weird taste though. It's the carbon dioxide taste. Yeah that's exactly it.

3:13:34Linus Sebastian:It's like so gross.

3:13:35Luke Lafreniere:It has a flavor and that's why some of the bubbly flavors I hate and Costco. Freaking Costco. I love Costco but like man both of their two variants of bubbly flat packs have two flavors i like and one that i don't i just need the one that has all the ones so every costco item is like that yeah every costco combo item is like that it'll have two things you like and one thing you hate i hate that but yeah i i

3:14:02Linus Sebastian:like it it's it like offends me i i i will be very thirsty this happened recently at an event i was very thirsty and like looking for water and someone figured out i was looking for water and was like, oh, I got you and handed me one. And it was sparkling water. I didn't figure out until I opened it. And then I had to go around and ask if anyone wanted it. And I was like, I haven't taken a sip. I just didn't realize it was freaking sparkling water. And then I had to spend a long time finding water again. And I was very thirsty.

3:14:28Luke Lafreniere:Charcoal 99 says, Costco uses the CD album strategy. Here's something you want. By the way, I piled in a bunch of stuff that you hate. You have to pay for all of it. yeah this is our reminder that luke is a super taster the heck is that it's a thing what is that it's someone with very high sensitivity for taste there's a i really don't know if i'm convinced the man eats only chicken so just because you can taste super doesn't mean you have good to taste

3:14:59Linus Sebastian:that is with that context that is the only way i would ever accept it

3:15:03Luke Lafreniere:yeah i mean you can get a test for it that might be a fun video for sammy to do um used to be more popular you you have like this strip and you would probably nearly throw up if you tasted it

3:15:15Linus Sebastian:but linus would be like what the hell's wrong with you it tastes kind of sweet and i like this that'd be fun for a wan show segment yeah it's a it's like a taste test kit thing and depending on

3:15:25Luke Lafreniere:your ability to taste it either is very gross or because this is fine or tasteless i don't know if

3:15:31Linus Sebastian:we've ever talked about this on wan i don't drink alcohol but do you know that i get the shakes the same thing that I get from carbonated water from like beer. Did you know that? Well, is beer not also carbonated? I literally have no idea. Yes.

3:15:46Luke Lafreniere:Yes, it is.

3:15:47Linus Sebastian:Okay, sure. But beer still has heavy...

3:15:49Luke Lafreniere:I mean, I don't drink it, but I still know...

3:15:51Linus Sebastian:Beer still has heavy contents of other things in it. Oh, yeah. The same way a pop would.

3:15:55Luke Lafreniere:I think it must just be the carbonated... Oh, but you can drink pop. But I can easily drink pop. So I don't think that argument makes any sense. I think it must just be conditioned that pop is fine or something. Or maybe it's just a stronger flavor, But then the strong flavor of beer would be enough to mass carbonation.

3:16:08Linus Sebastian:But then it also happens from spirits, which I don't think are carbonated. You get shakes from spirits. Have you considered that maybe you're possessed? So I get shakes from... I was waiting. What do you call it? Thanks, Dan.

3:16:20Luke Lafreniere:I know you got me. You got me on that one. I saw the beers.

3:16:24Linus Sebastian:This is probably not a term that's around anymore, but traditionally seen as like girly drinks. People thought it was the alcohol content, so they would give me girly drinks, and I would still get the like revulsion from it. You know what doesn't give that to me?

3:16:38Luke Lafreniere:What are those girly drinks called again? I forget. I know what you're talking about. No, no. What are they called? Somethingers. They're called somethingers. No, that's not it. Coolers.

3:16:49Linus Sebastian:Yeah, coolers. That's not a girly drink. They're just... Wine also throws me off. You know what doesn't? Whiskey and bourbon.

3:16:58Luke Lafreniere:Interesting.

3:16:58Linus Sebastian:No part of this makes any sense. Do you have a, like a sulfate issue? uh we i went to so there's this place in fort langley um something tavern you might know the actual name of it um really like that restaurant mostly liked that restaurant they used to do this really cool thing where you could go to like a um a sit down and they would have multiple courses and they had a brewmaster there and the brewmaster would pair every course with a beer yeah i don't drink but i wanted to go do something cool with my dad so i brought my dad and I was like dad you're drinking for two I'm driving so he just had two of of the drinks and I ate the food and the brewmaster came by and was like mildly offended but I will ask why are you drinking none of the things that I personally curated for every one of these dishes and I had to explain to him like it just doesn't work for me yeah and he explained some ethanol sensitivity something something something there's probably a reason and he was the one because I told him like i had had a sip of fireball and it was the only thing i didn't react to so i assumed it was the cinnamon content and he was he was assumed that that was probably not the case and i was like okay interesting because that's the only theory i've ever had and it's not one that i've really been motivated to test often right um so i still don't fully know but the only thing that i knew had not given me the shakes to that point in time was was fireball which i had to take as like a uh i think i like lost a bet or something right and my consequence was that i would have to take a shot of fireball because everyone thought it would be like horrible for me and i did too and then i took the shot and was like that's fine okay and it was just confusing for everyone involved yeah interesting interesting do you like glen finish see see here's the problem i don't like alcohol so i don't know this isn't something that i like you know try often or experiment with it ain't missing much i'm a pretty big fan of being in control of my brain yeah but sometimes it's fun to not sure hello bbl i'm currently on my honeymoon in thailand

3:19:14Luke Lafreniere:on our wedding day i lost my wallet and my wife lost her phone but other than that everything was perfect any fun wedding or honeymoon stories sure um i almost went to dubai on my honeymoon um spontaneously because some gaming buddy of ours that we played left for dead with was from there and we were like well um santorini was fun for a few days, but we're bored now. And so let's just leave. And so we booked flights and then realized immediately after getting on a ferry to the mainland, which is a long ferry, by the way, and this was quite a few years ago when internet was not just like a given everywhere, realized that we didn't have visas to go to Dubai.

3:20:05Linus Sebastian:Yeah, because you have a Canadian passport, so you're used to not needing those anywhere. Yep.

3:20:09Luke Lafreniere:And so we spent the entire ferry ride trying to, can you hear me now? Can you hear me now? Get enough cell phone reception to on our rudimentary internet connected devices, cancel our plane tickets and hopefully get a refund at a time when that would have been a catastrophic amount of money for us to waste on plane tickets we weren't going to use. So that was fun.

3:20:38Linus Sebastian:I don't for reasons. Next question.

3:20:41Luke Lafreniere:Hi, DLO. favorite video or project that you expected to take off but never did what would you have done differently pick from one of the 13 000 in uh 13 600 in about eight seconds it's not that i expected

3:20:59Linus Sebastian:them to take off but i was talking to someone about this the other day i am was surprised at how bad the pax gaming videos used to do oh yeah whoa nobody cared yeah it's it's actually

3:21:14Luke Lafreniere:shocking how little an audience that cares so much about gaming gpus cares about games yeah

3:21:22Linus Sebastian:sometimes yeah and like the sentiment was quite positive the comments are quite positive you can even look back now and be like okay yeah cool um but man did nobody care and like some of them could work if i tied it into hardware in some way um like we had some vr content at pax and stuff that worked out um there was other content that we did at pax that was like loosely related to games but had a grounding in hardware and those would do okay yep but it was just if i made like

3:21:51Luke Lafreniere:a indie booth top five nothing just like yeah it was pretty very very low views um and i'm talking

3:21:59Linus Sebastian:in like five digit total amount of views which was pretty rough for us even then yeah so and i mean low five digit to be clear

3:22:14Luke Lafreniere:yeah negative a thousand pretty much all right hit me down thanks so much lmg to all the people in the room dll question mark what is your favorite easter egg in lmg's product lines and of all products outside. Ooh, favorite Easter eggs. I mean, one of my favorites is definitely Dbrand embedding Easter eggs into their, what do they call it? X-ray? The see-through skins that they did in collaboration with Zach from Jerryberg Everything that then Casetify included in their own copycat version. And that was how Dbrand was able to prove that they ripped off the design was that there were errors in them that were just references to dbrand's founding date and stuff like that.

3:23:03Luke Lafreniere:That was some pretty ace-tier Easter eggs. I've also heard that there's a little microscopic engraving on the original Intel 8086, I think it is, from one of the designers or something like that. It's etched into every piece of silicon.

3:23:21Linus Sebastian:There's a bunch of different consoles and stuff that will have something on the PCB. I was always thinking of the Xbox controller which has like a Master Chief writing a scorpion it looks like yeah those are cool um

3:23:37Luke Lafreniere:was it the 8086? oh yeah check this out

3:23:44what?

3:23:46Linus Sebastian:yeah I remember this there's some like comical there's some comical stuff

3:23:52Luke Lafreniere:this is from PC Gamer that's crazy silicon doodle medley 2023 oh man websites have gotten so unusable

3:24:07Linus Sebastian:yeah and this isn't literally an easter egg at all but Conrad reminded me of a fun project he did a while back which was the potato not NFTs which were literally just pictures they had nothing to do with NFTs at all

3:24:23Luke Lafreniere:that was fun That was awesome. I forgot about that. A lot of our garments say do not drop on the care instructions. That's an Easter egg. It's a nice little nod to the channel. Yeah, because nobody reads us anyway. Yeah.

3:24:36Luke Lafreniere:Hey, guys. I'm a small tech YouTuber, the guy who made Float Native. And I'm curious how you balance trying to set content pillars, keep an eye on new audience interests, and obviously sponsored content.

3:24:51Linus Sebastian:Something maybe more there. Oh, we're interested in how you do it too.

3:24:56Luke Lafreniere:And how everyone else does it. Cause Oh my God. Yeah. There's no one right way to do it. You've got to pursue your own interests, right? Like to, to thine own self be true, but also you've got to take feedback and you've got to figure out if thine own self kind of sucks and needs to be better. Right. Um, sometimes you've got to be, you've got to be willing to go for it. No, you gotta be willing to balance. Like, you know i i think like phil collins okay we have a lot to learn from phil collins because he did very artistic music that quite frankly i don't like and then he also did super poppy stuff that sells records and raises his profile um let's learn from phil collins i i kind of assumed you

3:25:43Linus Sebastian:were going to go down that route because that's similar to what i was going to say specifically phil collins you saw that coming no no oh okay just the general idea um it's i mean i brought it up earlier in the show that arrowhead quote game made for everyone is game made for no one i feel pretty strongly about this idea where if you try to make something for as wide of an audience as possible you are losing some people because if you if you like bring a topic down in complexity enough that you can get more and more and more and more people and you do that to the nth degree you are losing that complexity and you're losing the people that might be interested in that complexity and you have to understand that there is a trade-off there you might be getting way more views but you might not be hitting a certain niche you might not be hitting a certain target audience and there is youtube channels that do very very very well that don't have the views that you might expect and it's because they have landed squarely on that niche oh like finance youtubers for instance is a big one yep yep and you might be like a specific type of finance youtuber that really hits it with these this small group of people and they're very engaged and they're supporting you and they're very affluent and they're worth a lot to advertisers and they are professionals in the space therefore advertisers can target people making like you know finance software decisions within their company maybe or something like that.

3:27:11Linus Sebastian:And it can totally work for you, but you have to hit that.

3:27:14Luke Lafreniere:Like if you get a thousand views of video, but every one of those thousand people is the CFO of a Fortune 1000 company and that's the audience that you've nailed. What is the CPM of that view? Mind-blowing.

3:27:28Linus Sebastian:Unmeasurable, basically. There was a project we did internally. We have these things internally called All Hands where once a quarter we do these presentations about what different departments in the company are doing. and we kind of rotate around who does what. And Flowplane had their first one not that long ago. And there was a decent amount of debate about like, what do we say? It was like, what do the people at Flowplane do with their days is like a pretty complicated thing and very unlike what most of the rest of the company does. So we want to say it in a way that a lot of people can understand, but we want to give the people that do understand the juice, the good stuff.

3:28:06Linus Sebastian:But you can't necessarily give all the juice if you spend all of your time explaining some of the base layer things. And we have to pack it within a relatively short period of time. So there was some min-maxing done. And I did get some feedback that we lost some people. But there was a decision made, largely by me, of like, we're going to have to be okay with that to a certain degree. And we tried to...

3:28:32Luke Lafreniere:We also had to trim back some of what the devs wanted to talk about.

3:28:35Linus Sebastian:That was really cool in order to not lose too many people. So there was min-maxing in both ways. We didn't want it to go down to like, okay, sick. Two people at the entire company can understand what's happening at all. But they really liked it. Yeah. And so we didn't want to go that far, but we also didn't want to go like, okay, sick. Every single person at the company understood and no one cared. And we didn't say anything.

3:28:55Luke Lafreniere:Yeah. And there's so many other sliders. Luke has really focused on like the complexity slider, but there's any number of other different sliders. I alluded to this earlier. how we need to not be, also was talking about the set in all hands, we need to not be afraid to make a video that's for the 500 ,000 people that are going to watch a video about a 5090 gaming computer because there's a value to that audience that is not necessarily measurable directly in the sheer count. And then we're still going to make videos that target like a larger base of people who are more interested in lossless scaling, for instance, like a couple dollar upgrade that can help them get more out of whatever GPU they already have.

3:29:38Luke Lafreniere:I can't wait to get these off. Yes, I saw you both laugh. It's not like I'm not aware of you, both of you bastards. I thought you were making a joke. I'm sorry. I was unsure. I was trying really hard not to.

3:29:52Linus Sebastian:I felt you to try really hard. I could tell either you were trying really hard not to or you were focusing on getting the right amount of it for the joke. I wasn't sure which one.

3:30:00Luke Lafreniere:Aletheia Zora says, whose idea was this? I love the idea that the right hand knows what the left is doing in the company. It goes back actually almost 10 years when we used to do something called Monday morning meeting. And it was an all hands Monday morning meeting. But that was at a time when we had like 20 to 30 people, I think was when we capped out and stopped doing Monday morning meeting the way that we did it then. And then partly just because I didn't want to because it was stressful and I spent enough of my life presenting. And partly because just there was other things I could be doing and partly because it was not relevant to everyone.

3:30:34Luke Lafreniere:Monday morning meeting kind of like faded away and it became an email. And the problem with emails is people don't read them. And so we still do Monday morning meeting. We actually call our Monday morning email Monday morning meeting. MMM, yeah. Because it was originally the email summary of everything we talked about in Monday morning meeting in case anyone was missing or absent. Not missing, absent. and then to supplement Monday morning meeting which is now an email we also have these quarterly all hands like town halls and yeah I think it's been a really positive thing we're really refining the format for them the first ones were there was a lot to learn because we'd never really done anything like this before not everyone's comfortable presenting we don't know how much to prepare how deep to go on our topics and then one of the pieces of feedback that we got a lot from the first ones is that like we were hearing from management, but we weren't hearing from ownership.

3:31:30Luke Lafreniere:So I talk at all of them now just to make sure that people are kind of, there's a lot of people who work here that I don't interact with. And that was something that took me a long time to wrap my brain around because to me, you know, my way of thinking is like very intuitive. I don't know, just like spend, but don't waste, take risks, but don't do anything stupid. You know, like just general principles, But people who have barely even met me are not going to be able to do that. They're not going to be able to understand that. They're not going to be, they might not, they might be kind of afraid to, to take a risk, right?

3:32:07Luke Lafreniere:Like it's their job. And that can be really scary. And I, so I just, I kind of had to come around to the idea of like, oh yeah, I need to like do addresses because I don't actually work shoulder to shoulder with everyone. And there's a huge disparity. the people that i work with i work with a lot like i get to know them a lot because we're like stuck on planes trains and automobiles together for like hours at a time sometimes and you like what you could just sit there awkwardly i guess or you could make small talk once in a while right like when we did that um that factory uh sorry not factories for that um data center tour with hetzner um like i drove like a total there and back of like five hours uh with like two guys in the car like what are we gonna do sit in silence it's crazy and but then on the flip side there's people who spent their entire time here sometimes spending multiple years that i never spent two and a half hours with total and i just i see people i've never seen before at every all hands yeah It keeps happening.

3:33:15Luke Lafreniere:Every single time. Remember when we were sitting in the fishbowl and then just slowly over time more people would walk by than we didn't know who they were? That was crazy. Because I've nearly been here for five years. That's crazy. And I think I was like 50 or 60 people.

3:33:32Linus Sebastian:I was still here when we were doing the Monday morning meetings. You know who's real close to their tenure? Adrian.

3:33:41Luke Lafreniere:I thought he was at 10 years. Well. It must be, it'll be this year then. It's this year. That's crazy. Yeah. That's crazy. Floatplane is officially 10. We didn't do anything to celebrate. We should have gotten a cake or something.

3:33:53Linus Sebastian:We'll do a floatplane cake. I think there's like something happening. It's not actually 10 yet, to be clear.

3:33:58Luke Lafreniere:Oh yeah, because it would have just been like the forum delivery mechanism.

3:34:02Linus Sebastian:Not even yet.

3:34:05Luke Lafreniere:But we started that before AJ started.

3:34:09Linus Sebastian:Yeah.

3:34:10Luke Lafreniere:So if he's 10 years now.

3:34:12Linus Sebastian:if I remember correctly it was November 1st

3:34:14Luke Lafreniere:oh so we're like very close

3:34:16Linus Sebastian:and there's some confusion because the original forum thread where like AJ posted his idea and stuff I think is gone I think it was lost in one of the data losses some stuff was lost because I was looking

3:34:26Luke Lafreniere:for an old post of mine about some controversy or something there was some data loss that was like actually an important sort of piece of anyway it doesn't matter the point is it's not there and I was like I was actually really worried about the optics of it looking like I deleted it, but I didn't. Okay, well, that explains it. Interesting. Yeah. I got another one here for Luke. Lemon blueberry, making eye contact with people when I'm talking to them is not an option. You can either have me pay attention to you or you can have me make eye contact with you. Those are the only, that's a binary choice.

3:35:04Linus Sebastian:It's also not that we don't, like, I don't know, whatever. That's, anyway, sorry.

3:35:09Luke Lafreniere:Neurodivergency. I haven't tried any of my meds yet, but I will. What is wrong? Oh, don't answer that. I got big. That's so cool. Yeah, my doctor's cool. Not as cool as my vet, though. He's like, hey, do you want to do something together?

3:35:29Luke Lafreniere:For Luke, with all of the things a person can do with AI and it being everywhere, what is the one thing that you have found that you use it for that makes something you didn't like fun?

3:35:41Linus Sebastian:there's still a lot of use cases that i i don't do because i don't want to engage with it on

3:35:50Linus Sebastian:on other people's platforms by doing those things if that makes sense i don't want to use chat gypte i don't want to use clod i don't want to use gemini gemini uh for that kind of stuff something that it was useful for recently that i've been interested in talking about on works scale um gemini no that's the nasa missions gemini um is is a fact checking tool which is interesting there was something i was working on outside of work recently that i was like you know what i'm going through and doing a lot of painstaking work to fact check this thing i'm still going to do that just like how labs uses some stuff for early detection but still has all the human processes i'm still going to do that but can this thing find stuff for me and streamline things potentially and it did which was kind of interesting um i had to use it on pretty high context i also had to give it a lot of rules like you know your your success metric is not finding more things your success metric is like having everything nicely cited and being able to prove that what you're saying is correct stuff like that because if you don't give it those guide rails it'll be like oh i found tons of stuff and then half of it's not legitimate um but yeah fact checking is an interesting use case of it you have to follow everything up this is something that i think drives me the most insane with ai stuff is that people want it to just blindly one-shot everything and they don't want to look into anything and it's just like google foo like you've got to get good yeah at guiding it to guide you if it flags something yeah go okay cool it gave me a cited source like i asked let me go read that source and check it against like where i got this information from and maybe they disagree and maybe that's a whole story in its own right and blah blah blah blah um but yeah that's been pretty interesting i still my my main use case still is just sentiment analysis um so i'll like be writing a message to someone and be like i am unsure about how this will be received.

3:38:00Linus Sebastian:So I will ask it, be like, hey, what, you know, do a sentiment analysis on this message. What do you get from it? And I don't use its output. I often have to tell it, hey, stop, because it'll rewrite my whole thing. You'd be like, you should say it like this. I'm like, that's not my point. What are you getting from what I said? And then I might rewrite my own thing and then send it to it again and be like, okay, how about now? and just keep iterating like that. That is my most commonly used use of it. I've been trying to use it to learn certain skills, which is interesting, because if you try to get it to act like a teacher instead of doing something for you, you can actually get it to do that pretty effectively.

3:38:49Linus Sebastian:I've done that with Linux a decent amount. I think I talked about that during the Linux challenge where I was using AI. I did not just go like, how do I do this? Give me the bash command and then copy paste, bam. I would, if it gave me a bash command, I'd be like, okay, break this down. What do all these little things do? If I'm putting this into FSTAB, I want to know. What is the zero space two at the end actually do?

3:39:14Luke Lafreniere:I like calling it FSTAB. Me too.

3:39:17Linus Sebastian:People not call it FSTAB. Yeah, they call it FSTAB. And I tried to be correct by calling it that way. but it felt icky because f-stab is so much cooler stab stab yeah f-stab is just awesome uh anyways so like i i try to use it to like break things down help me understand and i'm planning on using it for more of that little projects around the house and stuff if i'm like i have an idea i don't know how to execute this i'll try to get it to like break this down into steps come up with a plan so i can like learn how to do this myself and then and then do it nobody asked me but i'm

3:39:48Luke Lafreniere:enjoying the heck out of it for my home assistant journey. Yeah. Because it's for better or for worse, something that I can talk to at three in the morning when none of my team's contacts are available and, uh, I don't have to dig through Reddit. And so like one of the things that I did was a home assistant doesn't natively support, uh, binding deeper linked pages within the like settings interface into the side panel. And I was like, this is ridiculous because I have to click three interactions every time I want to get to like my devices screen. I just want one in the sidebar. And the only way to do that is you have to go modify a text file.

3:40:31Luke Lafreniere:And Gemini was able to guide me through how I showed me how to do one. And then once it showed me how to do one, I was able to do all the ones that I wanted to do. And now my navigation is fixed. I was like,

3:40:42Linus Sebastian:yay yeah yeah i um oh man i had something to say and i don't remember now sorry shoot no it's fine oh i cared about it i don't remember what it is

3:40:58Luke Lafreniere:darn it's gone okay oh well well it's fine

3:41:06Linus Sebastian:do i do it now oh that's all you still have to do your line oh do i yeah You're not allowed to change. Your line comes first.

3:41:14Luke Lafreniere:Oh, well, I mean, do you do my line now? I'm just, I'm so confused. Everything is topsy-turvy. Oh, it's the ad spot. One ad spot just throws a man.

3:41:25Luke Lafreniere:Thanks for tuning in. We'll see you again next week. Same bad time, same bad channel.

3:41:28Linus Sebastian:Bye.
