Sure But I think framing it that way makes it less concerning You just ruined All the No I think it's pretty concerning WAN show will never be the same We'll be talking about that We'll also be talking about all the tech news from this week, including oh, really? GPUs are supposed to go up in price? Yep. No! We already lived through this one! Multiple times. This is double jeopardy. You can't get charged for the same crime twice.
0:50You can't be a witness for your spouse's crime. You can't live through a GPU apocalypse twice. These are fundamental laws. This is, this is, we're beyond twice though. What else we got? Grok completely ruined my morning. Grok is being used to generate non-consensual sexual images of both adults and children. And it's like actually as bad as it sounds. We'll talk about that later. And apparently, oh, I was going to go for bad news again. No, no good news. Please, please balance it out. So far we've got bad news, bad news, bad Okay, this is gonna sound like bad news, but I think it's kind of fun Unlucky RTX 5080 buyer who received rocks did their own investigation and they got their replacement from Best Buy they won.
1:40Oh, well, that's good Yeah, all right. Yeah, and it's kind of sick how they did it. Let's go with that Yeah What? Like hacking into the files of the principal office What's this? An energy vortex Organic lifeforms? Oh, how quaint. I seem to have discovered a portal into a parallel universe. Extraordinary. Savages.
2:14I'll show you...
2:37the land show is brought to you today by vessy delta hub x split and motion gray alongside of course our rap partner dbrand our laptop partner razor and our chair partner razor who if they thought they were going to be treated more respectfully than our previous wait was it Already upside down? You guys are such trolls!
3:03There, it's perfect. Perfect the way it was. If you didn't notice and you put it - If you hit the correct that way that would have been so funny. Almost. It almost happened. It was so close. Alright, why don't we jump - That intro was amazing! Who made that? I actually don't know. I would assume it was no-key. I assumed that as well, but I didn't see like a thing or anything. So why don't we explain what the heck just went on? It was not. Who was it? I don't know. It was the team themselves. Really? Really. That's so cool. Okay. We should explain it. Yeah. Reboot was a Canadian animated television series that was produced by Vancouver-based Mainframe Entertainment alongside Alliance Distribution and BLT Productions.
3:50and it originally aired on YTV from 1994 until 2001. That's right. Reboot was my childhood. That's what computer animation looked like when I was a kid. Yeah, me too. And it's notable for being the first made-for-television CGI series with full half-hour episodes. Reboot Rewind is an eight-part documentary series about the show that came out in 2024, and now the documentarians are collaborating with mainframe to remaster the series from its original d1 tapes uh okay this says last friday because we put off this topic for a couple weeks but recently the reboot rewind team put out an update video on the progress of the d1 tapes being recorded and sven gave me the tldr every episode has been captured off the d1 tapes which was non-trivial yeah bts machines are being used to capture the footage at the original 576p and ltt has actually been helping with this project for like two years now supplying keoxia drives for storing the footage as well as helping pay for some of the machines and parts of the machine see there was a big challenge getting even a single functioning working machine to read these tapes because media production moves so fast that no one's really thinking about how we're going to preserve all of this stuff and in the early days of computer animation and digital production the standards were hardly even standards yeah and they didn't last very long and they weren't interoperable so this and when the when the like manufacturing pipeline for making these things goes away it's actually extremely difficult in some cases to like make bespoke parts for these things so needing to source stuff was rather difficult so we should have a video coming out in 2026 on ltt about this project it's been literally years in the making now and then at the end of the video the reboot rewind host mentions they happen to also have the d1 tapes for transformers beast wars aka beasties as it was known in canada yeah along with other cool old cgi shows that mainframe studios worked on and they're trying to get in touch with people about remastering that stuff as well shout out to brian he's the one doing a lot of the hard work to restore each episode which is being meticulously checked for transfer errors and mastering glitches awesome they also did the fun intro for today's episode there you go that was sick that was very cool.
6:27Also, Sven told me that the Reboot Rewind folks shared some restored cutscenes from a reboot PS1 game, which is linked above. People will go nuts for these animated cutscenes because they've never been seen in better than PlayStation 1 FMV quality. Seriously? Okay. That's pretty cool. That is pretty cool. That's pretty cool. Oh my god, that looks... That looks clean, dude. Holy crap. relationship. She gave me the power to control the tears and I took her life. And next time the Guardian will be so fortunate!
7:32Here's the Hexie! Now, now, Hex. Let's not be petty. Accidents can happen.
8:09This is the countdown to chaos!
8:26damn dude doing this stuff back then was so crazy i know right oh that is so cool anyway um discussion question talk about you know the value of media preservation what do we do to protect and preserve our work not enough i mean realistically oh man i feel like everyone probably feels like this in the moment i was about to say realistically i don't think it matters that much but then like someone's gonna want some reference for even something as simple as how well received was this gpu at that time and if we don't keep the media from that time then we don't have it it's that simple yeah um and i think that's how a lot of things get forgotten but i gotta tell you like when you're in the thick of it it's hard to it's hard to think about these things um why don't we move on to our next big topic which is of course uh Sorry, I'm looking for good news.
9:28We started with good news. We did start with good news. We could do bad news. You know what? No, no. Let's do a little bit more moderate news. Okay. There is a potential workaround for expensive hardware. Older hardware. The Ryzen 7 5800X, an AMD CPU from like five years ago, has just hit the number one spot as the top selling CPU on Amazon in the UK. And even older CPUs or even older GPUs like the 5800XT are sitting at fourth place for GPUs on Amazon in the US. eBay is currently flooded with people selling older hardware CPUs, GPUs, motherboards and yes of course older DDR4 and even DDR3 memory and I want to shout out TechSpot here for doing a little article that Luke has actually been bugging us to do something about which we are actually working on in the background as well although a slightly different angle but doing a little article talking about the usability of slightly older hardware they showed that if you compare cpus they actually tested 44 cpus and going as far back as the ryzen 5 2600 in modern games like battlefield 6 you can still achieve a more than playable experience at 1080p high and i think this is a really important thing for people to consider right now it's like this is not really our discussion question is not really a question it's more of a statement you don't need to buy new expensive hardware dude my uh one of my buddies from from high school his son um is currently running i might get some of the specs wrong sorry but i think it's like eight gigs of ram maybe 16 but i think it's eight uh a gtx 1080 and a 7000 series intel processor and he plays um whatever that riot game shooter is valorant and uh arc raiders and he was saying in arc raiders he was getting over 80 fps just like dude these are these are ancient pieces of hardware at this point the the 1080 doesn't even have like official continual driver support but like i don't know whatever if it plays the game that you want to play at at like 80 something fps um why not and like do i love 100 bucks spending a hundred dollars on an old gpu like that gpu no i don't love that but it's also 100 bucks but it's also 100 bucks and there might be a better i'm not this isn't a suggestion that's just a a rig that i know of that's running yeah no 100 and here's thing too is like i can totally understand people not wanting you know like being frustrated to hear like are you basically just you know telling me that you know two dolls ought to be enough for for a child they don't need 10 dolls or 20 dolls or whatever that ridiculous thing was no i'm not saying that at all i'm saying that channeling your inner scrapyard warrior is a great way to ride out times like this like i guarantee you i don't think i've actually ever asked luke this but i guarantee you that at some point he built a stopgap system sure something to tide you over while you waited for something else to be more affordable or something else to release or when you were in between selling your last generation gpu and waiting for a deal on a new generation one or whatever i mean i had like uh i think i've told you about this before where i was able to buy a platform upgrade through the intel retail edge program but i couldn't afford the rest of the upgrade for like i think it was like half a year or something and one of the ways that i was able to afford it was i sold my old platform and my old case but that meant that i didn't have a case i got the new platform i didn't have a case so i got this like hand me down case but the power button didn't work so i set up like a rubber band bow basically and a pencil nice that was so i could reach under my monitor and poke the pencil and it would press the the on motherboard power button nice to turn the system on and i had that for at least half a year nice whatever who cares and that's totally i think stuff like that's cool and that's totally fine making stuff work is is cool when did that not i thought it was fun when did that not be cool i i almost always for a long time there uh i apparently don't build my own computers anymore because the last two that I've had either you or your kids have built but um actually last three because there was a revision in that one case so the last three I mean I had a little bit to deal with the one in the middle but still um but before then I would always include one thing that was just like a weird solution because I thought it was fun like there was one time I mounted my pump on a cutout piece of the mud flap of my old car to use as like sound deadening So it was on this like rubber panel instead of a plastic panel in the case because it made it was just quieter and it worked and it was awesome.
14:46And I like that part. So don't don't like feel bad about doing things like that. I've always thought that's super cool. And something that's really important to note about stopgapping is that it can even, it can even, it can, it can help. It might feel like, well, I'm buying something that is going to like go down in value and effectively like waste a bunch of my money instead of the thing I actually wanted. So I might be better off just getting the thing I wanted. But let me, let me show you guys just some interesting math here, right? So a 1080, you can acquire pretty easily for about$100. And if you don't feel like paying shipping on it...
15:25Don't pay$200 for one. Yeah, do not pay$200. If you don't feel like paying shipping on it, or you worry that something that you buy on eBay might not be working, Luke and I have both tested GPUs that we've purchased on local marketplaces live. Test it. Make sure that it actually works. And the thing about an older GPU like this is that it's already gotten very low on its depreciation curve. Someone in Flow Play chat earlier said 1080s have been around$100 for years now. If we go back to like a GTX 780, okay? Here we go. Those are still like 45 bucks, you know, 25 bucks,$70, whatever. And that's a two generation older card, right?
16:13Like wrap your brain around that. You could stopgap with this 1080 for three or four years, and it might lose another$50 to$75 in value. Whereas if you could wait a year, or you could wait a year and a half on a current generation card, the second that gets replaced by something, I guarantee you that you will gain more by just delaying that purchase than you lost by acquiring that stopgap card and then just reselling it. Like it's, I don't know, man. I don't know what to tell you. It's kind of a frustrating thing because you know how we often have that conversation where it feels like there's this pressure from certain corners of the community for us to be more outraged.
16:57For us to, like, demand that NVIDIA lower their prices as if they're going to listen to us. I mean, I wish they would. Obviously, prices are too high and blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. And that's all true. But at the end of the day, I mean, we did that video recently explaining that it's not just NVIDIA. I mean, NVIDIA has, NVIDIA is a very profitable company, but so is TSMC, who has a monopoly on the manufacture of the chips NVIDIA sells. And for that matter, so is ASML, who has a monopoly on the machines that TSMC uses to manufacture the chips that NVIDIA sells. And monopolies abound in the entire supply chain.
17:34You're talking about companies that are holding up nations when you get to that scale. And so it's one of those things where it's like, yeah, I could demand that NVIDIA lower their pricing, but I don't have that influence. It's so ironic, right? Because influencer is right in my job title, and yet I can't influence companies to change their pricing. And our discussion question here is, is it frustrating that it seems to go the other way too? Because for over a decade, you and I have been going at our audience. That is what we sound like. Going hey guys you don't be heads. You don't have to buy a brand new one The secondhand market exists making do with something scrappier is Is honorable and based scrapyard wars and it doesn't and it doesn't even seem to mean anything No, some people get it though Some people do get it every once in a while You'll see a post on the on the subreddit where someone's like I did my own scrapyard wars and I came up with this or whatever Those are big moments for me.
18:33I I I genuinely love that. This was one that was... You're never going to hit everybody. I know. I know. That's okay. This was one that was frustrating for me. This. This video bombed out of the gate. Like it sucked. It's done okay in the longer term, which is heartening. It's whatever the opposite of disheartening is. I remember this having issues out the gate, though. I do remember that. But you know what? In spite of it having issues out of the gate, this video about you know scrapyard warring uh like a facebook marketplace home theater setup for a fraction of the cost of even a crappy soundbar um did inspire multiple posts on the subreddit of people being like i had no idea this is so cool i love my setup now thanks for inspiring this that's awesome that's why we do it that's why we play the game i uh i i loved it i'm glad when people get the point i also find that you learn a lot more about your craft um okay i guess i'll concede that building computers is not quite as easy as adult lego um but when it's all brand new out of the box stuff it is a lot more simple and you're often dealing with like configurators on websites that are telling you compatibility things off the hop all the blah blah blah when When you're on the used market, you're trying to price min max.
19:58And that often means mixing things together from different sellers in different areas and trying to make sure that everything's going to work. And trying to learn how to diagnose on the spot if you can go visit somebody and be like, hey, can I bring a test bench to test this thing? I've done that a bunch. And learning what program you should run to try to verify if it's legit on the spot, all those different types of things. you're learning stuff about your craft which is kind of like fun and cool um i have that old board by the way um if you want to do i don't know if you want to do a video on that or what but the board with the wire repair it's at my place right now okay yeah that's that's probably an interesting from skyward wars season four there was a repair that i mean it goes above my head i'm sure if i don't know watching might understand but i don't um there's a a single wire that runs from one fan header to another fan header on a very specific pin on each probably power um but uh if if that wire isn't bridging those two fan headers it doesn't work and if it is then it works perfectly fine and has worked perfectly fine for years like in some cases acting as like a 24 7 server for like months at a time and stuff like no issues just as long as this this wire is bridging these two fan hitters and this motherboard made magic smoke at some point yeah so i i don't quite i can't quite fathom it who knows but stuff like that's awesome like i that gets me way more jazzed up than like some random new motherboard what's up i can tell oh yeah anyways off that topic um what are we supposed to be doing dan how's it going over there oh he's chill he's chill he's that it's five it out christmas energy strong a headline topic is technically the thing yeah probably that it's not ominous how do you want to approach this i mean you're the one that keeps trying to let the cat out of the bag i'm not about i'm not about cats getting out of bags i keep cats in bags.
22:09I'm like a cat bag kind of guy. I don't think so. You leak a lot of stuff on Lancho. I mean... I don't know if you can... Yeah, but I keep all my cats in bags. Are you going to use the proportional argument? You have so many things to leak? I thought you meant literal. I thought you meant... Yeah, no, okay, sure. Figuratively, yes, I let a lot of cats out of bags. All of my actual cats are in a bag right now. Oh, wow. All together, yeah. No. Um, I braced for the clarification. It's sad that it had to happen, but it did have to happen. The WAN show is officially, as of yesterday, under new management.
22:52What? Well, not really under new management, actually. The management is the same. But the ownership is different. This is a pretty major change going forward. um but i have um i don't know i don't know what you would call it but i i have abdicated half of my ownership stake of the wan show um people are saying sold out to mr luke did sell out mr luke lafreniere he sold out to me it's official the wan show is a 50-50 partnership between me and Luke. We have, what's it called? We've incorporated a new media holding company, Adequate Media Inc., which owns the WAN show. So technically, my half of it is actually owned by me and Yvonne because we are one person from a legal standpoint.
24:00So we own half of the WAN show. and then Luke officially owns the other half of the WAN show. We've had a lot of questions over the years about, you know, what is Luke's equity stake and this and that. And the answer has always been Linus Media Group was founded and seeded by me and Yvonne and we've owned it 100%. But the WAN show clearly has two people in its soul and one of them is this guy. I think that for the WAN show to continue to be the WAN show forever, the only right way to safeguard its future was to have it be a Linus-Luke equal partnership. So the change then, the big change, is that the WAN show is safe.
25:02and that the WAN show will not change. That's the big change? Well, it is a big change. The WAN show was unsafe? Well, no, I mean it... Then it's not a change. You and I have talked about it, right? That, you know, if you took a position somewhere else, or that if I retired from making daily tech tips videos or whatever... We'd still want to do WAN show. That we wanted to continue to do the WAN show. But that agreement, right, it's verbal, it's handshake, it's, you know, we're we're friends but it's not codified it's not in black and white yeah there's no actual there's no guarantee that we'll be able to put together the correct financial incentives to ensure that whereas now it's very clear yeah and i mean there's still like some people are saying like oh it shouldn't be 50 50 because someone should always be able to make decisions and stuff i'm like yeah i mean it's still kind of in linus's hands if we're being real about things um he still owns linus media group uh the people who basically like run wanshow operations wise are ltt people lmg people etc um this is not like yeah however it's very cool symbolically that's today i don't know what i don't know what our however many years because when we've been talking about wanshow futures we've been talking about like that we want to keep doing this in like 20 years yeah plus so this is this is a step towards it being reasonable to do this in 20 years exactly i for for today um you know what will what will probably happen is there will be an agreement between adequate media inc and linus media group that adequate media inc will promote products and services like float plane or creator warehouse or you know whatever and then linus media group will find sponsorships and realistically luke is still employed as a as an employee of float plane and linus media group and all that stuff so for today there's no change but for a potential future where who knows what happens uh this ensures that there is a there's a strong incentive that's not i mean it's not just financial too right like luke called it symbolic but i think it's more than just symbolic i think it's uh i think it's well those there's the there's the non-financial part of it right yeah do we talk about that i mean sure i'm not sure exactly what you're referring to so go for the like the the agreement that you're just talking about of like the services and whatnot are supposed to balance things out so this isn't like uh um i'm not like looting lmg no no and and the idea behind it is that that would never happen and the only time that the only time that any of this would matter would be if there was a major change to the status quo we're just trying to get out ahead of it and make sure that everyone's on the same page that we want to make sure that WAN show can continue for indefinitely.
28:34Basically, however long, yeah. Yep. Keep the streak alive. Yeah. So like effectively, nothing is really changing, honestly, internally or externally. However, starting soon, we will start streaming the WAN show on a different channel. And? And on the LTT channel. and then over time we will eventually some point stop streaming the wan show on the ltt channel and it will move to a dedicated channel either we will take over the lmg clips channel or we will create a new channel so you guys will have to go subscribe to a new channel in order to get your notification for the wan show live stream and and find the vods and all that um stay the path asks what about on float plane don't worry float plane streaming is not going anywhere for better for worse sorry luke uh we were close uh no yeah we'll keep going here yeah yeah okay uh is there any is there anything else did people have any kinds of like questions um a lot of people asking how this works for dan dan still works for linus media group he is an incredibly valued member of the team but from like a you know there at the beginning standpoint that was Luke at this time but you know what I really appreciate the community's love of Dan and Floatplane Chat Dan what can I say they love you they love you yeah i'm here too
30:24all right should we should we move on to our next topic
30:32uh we've this is three topics we've done now but yeah dan doesn't listen to the show so what does he care topics don't care topics don't care about your feelings uh should we talk about drones ah us the the us blacklist new foreign made drones from entering marketplace no no the oh yeah the market like basically you can't sell it on yeah new non-us made drones cannot be sold i guess not saying the marketplace makes it sound like facebook yeah um yeah no it's just the marketplace in general um the fcc has announced a ban on new foreign made drones and critical drone components citing national security concerns which as an aside kind of makes sense um a move that will heavily impact dji's rather specifically which dominates the u.s drone market the ruling blocks companies like dji and autel robotics from introducing new drones in the u.s through existing models though existing models are not affected for now the fcc says foreign-made drones could enable surveillance data exfiltration and disruptive attacks, arguing that all future UAS, which is just basically UAV, but it's system instead of vehicle, all future UAS hardware should be manufactured domestically to reduce risk.
31:50And these are not entirely ridiculous sentiments. Honestly, no. Drone pilots and commercial operators have pushed back hard, warning there are no real alternatives to DJI's affordability and capability. Industry groups say many businesses could shut down without access to DJI hardware, while DJI itself calls the ban anti-competitive and claims multiple reviews have found its products secure. I mean, it's definitely anti-competitive, and there are downsides, major downsides for that. There's that whole thing where, like, China encouraged Tesla to come into their market to push their own players to be more competitive.
32:31basically like invite the big dog in to to get your people to act up um clearly dji is already in the states and people are saying there is no alternative so that's not exactly working stateside um so i had a chat with my brother-in-law uh i've talked about him before um this is the company that he works for it's pretty cool by the way they're um basically they're they're building a platform that is designed for individual drone operators to be incentivized you can actually kind of see it in this visual here be incentivized to capture high resolution drone imagery for global mapping um and not just like mapping like like like google maps but more like uh the kinds of high detail models of our cities and the world that could be used for things like um mineral exploration or for um one of the ones that he brought up for me was like firefighting there's all kinds of cool stuff that you cannot do without a a high high resolution map and there currently is not a practical way to capture that that isn't just flying drones with high resolution cameras over every square inch of the globe and then ingesting all of that data and making it accessible so that's the that's the challenge that they're working on solving and um yeah yeah elanor says um spexy is crowdsourced gis which is honestly so cool except like except like even better um it's really really cool tech uh anyway the point is that you know when this announcement hit uh he and i were actually on a beach in cabo and his phone just like started because of this started exploding because like their entire industry is sitting there going what do we do now yeah okay so we're supposed to use a domestic drone what fucking domestic drone what are you even talking about yeah okay well guess what just like it always is there's a there's a political there's a political angle to it oh is there like some company is there some company oh Oh my god, I'm trying to use your website.
35:06This is terrible Second new board blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah advisory board blah blah, etc Drone company. Yeah, of course there. Of course it is super cool. That makes sense. Yeah Yeah, I definitely if if we completely ignore that part because obviously I don't know the what is it? The Donald Trump? It doesn't seem obvious to everyone thing it doesn't seem obvious to everyone fair enough but even if we ignore the clear corruption issues um i understand why they would want to do something like this yeah future warfare like even if you look just within the confines of the ukraine war oh yeah future warfare has completely changed um and it is extremely drone based at this point and if you don't have domestic drones and if you're Like, yeah, our entire domestic drone industries actually just DJI.
35:59I can totally understand why that would be very concerning. I think there are other ways to solve this. I think there are ways to incentivize, you know, like stateside drone companies, stateside drone manufacturing without just banning competition. But I can understand why from a defense perspective, you would want to make sure that you're protecting, not necessarily banning competition, but protecting your own drone manufacturing. I think there's a variety of ways to do that that aren't banning it. The only thing I'm saying is that I understand why they're doing this, not that I necessarily agree with it.
36:35Yeah, I think, you know, subsidizing, promoting, doing something to push local drone manufacturing and research would be a good idea instead of, you know, banning competition and then setting up your family member for an alley-oop.
36:55nepotism is pretty cool though i guess um anyways next topic yeah i mean i don't know i feel like i might have had a no i guess i don't really have any more anything more to say about that we'll we'll see how it goes it's going to drive up the price of existing models for sure it's going to it's going to cause a delay in the quality of available drones in the US compared to other markets where DJI will continue to export and continue to innovate yeah the mass manufacturing will be the problem people have been able to make drones at home for a long time I do kind of wonder what this will look like for parts did it mention parts in here okay okay yeah so critical parts it doesn't just include parts so the fpv community is like losing their minds too because even wait so it's not full drones it is drones and parts is what you're saying and critical parts yeah yeah so it's like were you gonna get uh like a your u.s made processors and motors and everything yeah that's that's like years out i think at the least yeah Well, we'll see how it goes.
38:08If kind of ever. That'll be interesting. We'll see how it goes, man. Actually, this is a good question. Is this going to be as good as the Trump-backed drone company going to be as good as the Trump phone? Did that thing ever get delivered? Let's have a look here. Oh, yeah. No, it exists today. What is this? Okay, yeah. First ever smartphone is delayed and the government shutdown is to blame. Oh, okay. Oh nice. That's good. That makes sense. Why does that make sense? What would that have had to do with anything? Same coverage as the as the whatever okay, yeah, so they're still pretending that this is gonna be a thing Is there still anything on here about it being like made in the USA or is that is that gone now?
38:56Because at the beginning it really was Built for people who expect more okay. It seems like they have removed they've removed anything about it being american made um so it looks like there are some designed with american values in mind well i did not so they have a refurbished s20 oh they have additional phones now they have refurbished phones and then okay proudly american what does that mean designed with american values in mind with american hands behind every device it is amazing how much you can pretend to say something and not say it it's brought to life here in the usa that doesn't american proud design None of that says or means Made in the USA None of it Oh man I don't even know why they care I don't even know why they bother to pretend Because it's not like anyone's enforcing anything anyway So They might as well just say it's made in America At this point Someone linked this list The blue list It's a cleared list of drones But it says specifically it's a cleared list for drones approved for DOW which I think is Department of War because they renamed Department of Defense.
40:28Sure. And there's like there are Skydio drones and other various things on here but I don't know if this is consumer cleared or if this is just Department of War cleared. I'm unsure. This is great. Kitty Kitty says don't try to understand the grift. It's just a grift. It's like closely inspecting a brown paper bag on your doorstep. You already know what it is. Yeah, that's fair.
40:59Comical. Sort of. Oh, we could do a Tech House update. Yeah, do it. I was there today. We took possession three days ago. And I didn't get a chance to go there until we did our shoot today. So if you haven't been keeping up, there was a video on the LTT channel where we went shopping for a tech house. And the idea behind it was pretty straightforward. We've done a lot of kind of upgrades in my house to the point where my house is fine. And we don't. Oh, yeah. Are your auto lights fine? Well, no. But that will fix. Actually, Inivelli's shipment of new lights with millimeter wave detection that are going to be way better and I'm really excited about have lots of fixes compared to the ones I'm using now is like in custom clearance right now.
41:50Like I am stoked to finally have the lighting experience that I promised my family years ago. Anyway, that's besides the point right now. The point is we don't need to make another video of Linus upgrades his living room TV every other month. My living room TV is fine. And so this tech house is going to give us kind of like a, it's almost like a test bench. It's like the computer test bench of like, not just smart home stuff, because I think there's kind of a limited audience for people who are interested in home automation, but also just practical deployments of technology, whether it's computers or TVs or audio equipment or i mean okay do you remember that video that you did years ago on using a projector for like tabletop gaming oh whoa okay yeah okay bit of a bit of a deep cut what would what what i wasn't i'm not trying to cut anybody no no deep cut means like an old reference i don't think it does i think it does no i think it means like uh like a wound what am i trying to think of then i don't know bit of a deep cut refers to a significant wound that might need medical attention like the whole chat is saying that i'm right luke does know this one really yeah it's just slang oh okay i thought i thought it's like uh i thought it was like a like a like a stab don't twist like that's a bit of a deep that's a bit of a deep cut i'm sure it is also used for that uh okay bit of a deep cut slang meaning uh on a record a deep cut is a song judged to be less commercial or radio friendly uh i like genuinely the entire chat there's got to be something to it urban dictionary a song by an artist boomer dictionary at this point only true fans of said artist will enjoy or no oh okay song obscure work okay well that's clearly closer to your definition than it is to mine so sure yeah yeah let's go you're also on boomer dictionary um anyways it's just it's just i don't think that video like did well and it's super old oh yeah so it's just a surprise i don't even know what i would type in to search for it yeah don't worry about it the point is that like we we wanna we wanna use this place as an opportunity to talk about building a sick tabletop gaming space sweet or building a super cool there's a lot of really cool stuff you can do these days oh i know the whole projector game thing has been like very leveled up um there's there's some really awesome stuff you can do yeah and so so pretty much what we were looking for was a place with really good bones and with reasonable ease of use for upgrading them.
44:56Because, okay, yeah, it might have been more realistic for us to find a place that didn't have a crawl space, for instance, right? That we were going to be ripping off drywall for absolutely every single wire we were going to run, stuff like that, right? But that's not, we're not a home renovation channel. this is our first kind of kick at this can uh we wanted something that we could we wanted something to cut our teeth on so we got a place that not only has a really nice crawl space under the entire main floor which is sick that'll be sick for doing this type of stuff yeah it's it's not tall like in order for me to get down there i have to be completely almost like like butt down to the ground and it's like here so you're pretty much crawling it's a literal crawl space good name but it also has a it has a little like i think it's called a dormer like it has one room that's on the second story in in the front and we're gonna we're thinking we're gonna convert that to like a media room and then it has a couple little crawl pathways along the side of that as well so it's got really really good access to getting fishing wiring down or up into wall spaces and it's actually this video is going to be really fun because in the first one we just kind of do a high level overview because we're just touring it because we were shopping whereas in this one we really start digging into some of the really weird stuff the previous owner did like he was obviously in a different way a pretty techie guy okay one of the bedrooms has i kid you not three rj 11 jacks in it there's all like like like a phone line yeah yeah yeah there's also an rj 11 jack next to the toilet no okay that that that was a thing very odd but yeah that was a thing i've always thought that's weird yeah to have a like what happened am i you just unplugged my head oh sorry um oh man uh no to have a like a uh a phone in your bathroom oh man what happened it's fine don't worry but oh that we're good um the wanshow quality is not going to get better as a result of any of this just so you guys know um yeah yeah Toilet phones were a thing for sure.
47:24I always thought it's kind of pretty unsanitary personally. Sure, yeah. But you're just putting it on your face. I get it. I can see it both ways. Yeah, sure. But it's the three in the bedroom. That's interesting. Yeah, I couldn't quite wrap my brain around it. He had a CD player in his kitchen, which I thought was pretty cool. Nice. Man, there's, oh my God. I swear. Wasn't there like, I think I saw in the video, you could like play music throughout the house on like the on that cd player i think so yeah one out of every three like like duplex receptacles like power outlets had one of those six gang ones like bolted onto it he was a major fan of power strips and extension cords like um he had that he had an interesting system where you could only run either the dryer the closed dryer or you could run this extension cord 240 volt outlet that he had just like coiled up using in wall wire and just like into an octagonal box like thing that he had in his garage so he had like a 240 volt extension cord in his garage that you could not run at the same time as the dryer and he had a kind of sick a sign above the dryer in german not to run it at the same time as the one in the garage Kind of sick.
48:45Yeah, like it's a it's honestly like people are saying it sounds bad I don't know enough about that being like dangerous or not, but it sounds pretty great. Oh, it's it's That let me put it this way I think this guy's idea of safety first was the four fire extinguishers that he had in his garage

49:07Rather than just I don't know not starting a fire in the first like he would just he'd be like yeah i'd love to have a cable outside the house so i'm gonna just take a big long drill bit and go through the wall like that was his way and he's got like a shed in the back he he had a bit of an infestation so we found that in the inspection report which colton did not share with me until after we i mean a lot of the places around here bought it and took possession so anyway this ain't alberta yeah infestation major infestation his solution was these little noisemakers that you plug into yeah they were like everywhere noisemakers yeah it didn't didn't help obviously yeah so i'm kind of thinking tech house cat we just get a pet nice and keep it there and then that'll take care of it colton doesn't want to do that though he wants to like hire an exterminator i think that's so dumb i think a cat would take care of any rodent tissues around this house like quick styles dude i don't i don't see oh i shouldn't say that i have seen mice in my house they were dead or in a fish tank thing okay well yeah yeah yeah those were pets yeah it was complicated they're temporary pets and eventually they were dead so the system clearly works it did it worked exceptionally well in that case um yeah linus just wants another cat i mean yeah yeah another cat's not a bad thing um i'm trying to think what what else is there to say about it oh there were some other things that were found in the inspection report that i found out about today yeah are you saying those yeah sure apparently there's particularly bad yeah you know about the foundation issue yeah foundation and drainage issues so oh i didn't know about the drainage one too i mean usually they as far as my understanding goes they have to go hand in hand but yikes so i guess we're gonna have to i guess we're gonna have to figure that out but dude i'm i'm excited this does sound like bought a house in vancouver vibes not vancouver but i'm saying that for the greater Vancouver area yeah public audience but um it's sort of how it goes a lot of them have infestations a lot of them are old and have foundational problems a lot of them have previous owners who just kind of yolo'd stuff oh yeah there's a lot of that yeah unlike Australia where it's like apparently illegal to make improvements to your own house if you're not certified you know about this you don't know about this yeah that's the thing that sounds um annoying well yeah but the flip side is that I bet they probably don't have stuff like we saw in this house I mean their housing market is just wrecked so i mean so is australia so yeah there's that yeah um maybe i misunderstood that anyone anyone from upside down land can can verify for me anybody anybody bueller
52:13uh dylan ka says uh i have an illegal back deck in oz didn't get council approval apparently electrical is a no-no yeah says old tom there you go 100 true in some ways okay yeah there you go migore says would you trust a criminal to fix their own home they're not all criminals they're just descended from them total different totally different ball game okay i don't believe in the sins of the father okay that's not how this works so dude this place is like downright scary some of it like I found this bought this like rotten box in the backyard that just had an outlet in it That there's no way that it was watertight and that outlet had one of those freaking six Oh, no this in the yard like why he didn't even have more than one thing plugged into it So why he just put them everywhere Just put them on everything.
53:11Oh god. No, please stop. He just really liked his power I think James said that he had two built-in vacs. One that ran to like a couple spots and then one that was running somewhere else. I didn't actually verify that. I didn't double check that because it didn't make any sense to me, but maybe he's right. Maybe he's right. I don't know. Yeah, we'll see. It's going to be cool though. It's going to be, I think it's going to be a lot of fun. I, as I was walking around, half of me was really excited about all the cool projects that we can do. and then the other half of me was like oh god have we bit off more than we can chew like it's obvious that there's a couple little things that they did just to prep the place for sale they they like they just obviously redid the uh the main bedroom ensuite bathroom like like all modern it has a sliding barn door entrance and it has like freaking barn doors i know oh they're awful Why even have a door?
54:13They don't block any sound. They don't block any smell. It feels like you're declaring that this door will always be open. And then if that's the case, like... Just have it be a pocket door and then we can ignore it. Or just have it not be a door, I guess. Yeah. That's an option too. Yeah. You could just be like all those hotel rooms that just don't have a bathroom door because apparently, you know, every couple in the world wants to watch each other's shit. Yeah. Which I don't fully understand. Like, I'm not gonna yuck your yum or whatever. but like i just don't need it yum
54:53so um yeah what was i gonna say about it yeah right so they redid the main ensuite bathroom and it looks so out of place like just completely out of place they did like a but like a granite or marble countertop and then like this new shower that... David Pankratz was there today. He was like, oh, that's a Costco shower. I was like, okay, yeah. And then, and so they did that. They put in a bunch of new like vinyl plank flooring in some places and then they just left the like pink carpet or whatever it is. It was 90s. It was the 90s. It was a different time. They just left that other places. Pink carpet was a thing.
55:29And then they, but then apparently the inspection report found that it was either the en suite or it was the the main floor bathtub is just draining directly into the crawl space oh yeah so like huh they click it's completely cosmetic i found a can of paint in one of the closets that just says all walls so like classic throw a coat of paint on it redo the main en suite bathroom put some vinyl plank down slap some lipstick on this pig and get this thing sold and we bought it nice yeah to be fair i think that was going to be the situation for all of the places that you're looking at at that price point yeah more or less i mean no we did find stuff that was not that much more that was pretty moving ready but we also didn't want something moving ready.
56:29You wanted to work on stuff. Yeah. We didn't want to go into a place that was perfectly nice. How much was it? Is that disclosed? Throw away a bunch of stuff. I mean, I think people could find it easily enough. So it was actually, I don't know what the final, I don't know what we paid because I know that we did negotiate because of like, oh yeah, your foundation has problems. That can be a pretty big one. And your drainage drainage has issues and there's all this stuff that's not up to code like i think there was a bit of negotiation but i think the list price was 1.3 okay yeah so there's definitely ones there there's very there's very move-in ready stuff yeah but i thought it was like pretty lower than that but this place has a yard um which is not a given around here no and it's a it's like a reasonable sized house you'd think with the amount of space canada has that we would make that a thing but nope well you know here's the thing right like are you gonna show the map of bc yeah i'm gonna show i'm gonna show the map of bc edumacate the masses yeah so canada is really big but also the mercator projector project or projection makes it seem a lot bigger than it is if you actually look at like like on a round globe okay i mean it's still really big though it's still really big but it's also like it's not that big like remember remember the news cycle recently that was like hey does anyone actually know that africa is like enormous enormous and that europe is like not um because like you know like africa is like not that much smaller than like freaking asia like it's freaking huge like did anyone did anyone realize you know any of this did anyone know that brazil is like freaking the size of the u.s pretty much not not quite but like on a mercator projection map they these things do not look right um anyway the point is that while canada is very large indeed i'm just gonna go ahead and put the old uh mountain terrain on here the the the top of so yeah here's a big part of our problem there is like one little like this little thing tiny flat part of British Columbia.
58:48And then it's just all, it's all just, there's like, there's like a little, there's a little valley here. There's another one here. This one's kind of part of the same one. And then up here is just here be ice dragons, basically for all of this. and then yeah we have some we have some plains that also are full of ice dragons for half of the year and then you can kind of you go south enough that it's livable again for a bit and then here be mountains again and more ice dragons so Canada's actually a lot of ice dragons a ton of ice dragons
59:34yeah whereas like in America they do have mountains you know they have a lot of the same problem as us sort of through this area here but then they also have just like oh wow look at all this like perfectly flat not infested with ice dragons land that is really useful a lot of wind dragons that's true definitely wind and rain dragons they got their own kinds of dragons down there
1:00:05oh yeah I guess we could do that so yeah excited for tech house it's gonna be great i'm not gonna think about it too much right now because i got ces next week but i'm gonna get back and it's gonna be fun how'd you get out of ces anyway i i was kind of looking at the year and going like okay there's two like ces like shows that are in heavy contention basically you just want to go to Computex. Yeah. I'm going to bring Nick and Lucas and we're going to try to go see I'm trying to talk to some brands. There's a couple brands that are interested in doing this right now. But we want to go see you know how we've been doing this kind of tour of testing and validation and performance testing labs?
1:00:55We want to go do that but also in Taiwan. We want to see how they design and test power supplies at their actual location oh that's cool do different things like that um it's proven a little difficult to get through to companies but i think it's because we're not super close to computex and everybody's focused on ces right now um so hopefully after ces the the conversations will kind of prop up but i was looking at like um you know with no sponsor or anything for the labs side bringing down either myself or myself and two others which were the two potential plans and then paying for flight accommodations all that kind of stuff for a week what am i going to get out of this event and it was like i don't know i can maybe swing one event for the year right and if i can tie on these like potential brand tours of like seeing how these things are performance tested he's seeing how these things are designed and whatnot to the computex one that sounds a lot more valuable so I'm going that angle also you just would rather go to Taiwan we don't need to discuss that part sure we don't need to discuss it because you know and I know that all of that whatever that I'm hardly even listening to I might really not like Vegas and I might really love Taiwan but I think that's irrelevant really really I think my other I might have constructed a scenario where one makes a lot more sense than the other one.
1:02:27Yeah, I'm pretty sure that was what... And it might also be very reasonable. It might be a pretty good construction. Plausible, you might say. It might be almost entirely designed to get Nick and Lucas there. Because I already had mechanisms to get myself there. Your justification can be whatever it wants to be. I'm not going to crash out about it. What a segue, dude. And what a first merch drop of the year. The Crash Out t-shirt. Yeah, I guess I can also...
1:03:02There it is boys. You ever have those moments where for like half a second throwing your laptop across the room feels like a totally reasonable troubleshooting step. Me too And that's what this shirt is for When your patience is basically gone And you're still pushing through it anyway It comes in tall It's printed on our super comfortable blank t-shirts And comes in both regular and tall If this shirt feels uncomfortably relatable for you You can get yours at lmg.gg Slash Crash Out So here it is on the global store also available on the US store and it looks a little something like that. Get it in any size you want and any length you want as long as it's black.
1:03:56What else do we have for the store this week? Ah, yes. This is less of a, this product is available and more of a, this product is coming extremely soon. Be ready. LTT true spec cables are coming. These cables are crafted with care, built with a strain relief that bends with the cable instead of against it, reducing stress where breakage often happens. We have paired that strain relief with a supple silicone jacket that resists UV damage, kinks, and tangles. And the high-speed conductors are... Actually, here, can I bring that up on your screen? Yep. And the high-speed conductors are individually shielded to reduce interference and keep your transfers running.
1:04:43Every connection feels effortless, and every performance remains uncompromised. Whatever the second part of that sentence meant. Uncompromised performance. And we feel that the right cable should fit your setup, not the other way around. So whether you need a short run for your desk or a longer reach that goes across the room, We will have an option that will work for you. Each connection type, USB A to C and USB C to C, comes in 16 thoughtfully chosen speed and length combinations. And every cable is clearly marked, you might want to give them a little zoom on that, for speed and power, giving you the confidence to know that the performance you expect is the performance you will get.
1:05:31But you can sign up to be notified once these drop at lmg.gg slash cable sign up. Now, it is worth noting that you guys might look at that 15 watts on the one that was on the left and go, well, that seems pretty weak at a time when you can do up to 240 watts on a USB cable. That's because that has a type A connector at one end. And when we say true spec cables, we mean that we are remaining true to the spec. So there are technically products that exist within the USB ecosystem that are not to spec extensions, for instance, exist. But from chatting with Tynan about it. They are not spec like there.
1:06:15There is no accounting for the connector losses and and the and the losses from the length that we're adding to these cables. When you plug a cable into an extension, you just got to like pray to Thor that it's going to work because that's about your best shot of ensuring that it's going to. And that doesn't mean that it won't work. It just means that it might not. So we are sticking with whatever the we're sticking with whatever the maximum official spec power and data transfer is within the USB specification for any given length. so what you might notice is that our longer cables even using the same connectors at the ends might be rated for a slower data speed that doesn't mean that you might not get a better data speed if you happen to have you know really tolerant devices at either end but we aren't going to guarantee it we're all about true spec on these um i really like the name personally yeah yeah i think it makes i think it makes a ton i think it makes a ton of sense um frosty kyogre says the marking's nice i had to sharpie a label onto my only 10 gigabit per second capable cable yeah right like it's so annoying um so that was a big part of where this came from is like in my life i have a thousand usb cables but never the one i actually need in a given moment and whether it's that they're not rated for a particularly high speed and i'm doing a big transfer and i'm oh God, is it faster to go get another cable and restart it?
1:07:50Or is it faster to just wait for this to finish? I don't know. Or whether you get one of those ones that only has the conductors for charging in it and you plug it into your phone and you're like, is it my phone being weird? Like it's not in data transfer mode? Or, okay, I'll go get another device. Or is it this cable? I just want to eliminate uncertainty from my life. So with the LTT cables,
1:08:18I know that whatever I'm holding a type C to type C at this length is whatever the best cable could be for that and I'm G to G. So this is this is a longer one. So this is a 20 gigabit per second 240 watt type C. Oh, yeah, sure. Why not? I mean, it's going to go. So I think this is what a six footer or something like that. Looks like it might be a little longer. Yeah. Anyway, this is the one that I carry around for for charging my laptop. And it is worth noting that we are not doing Thunderbolt cables at this time. So these are all, at most, USB 4. VGA? VGA. You don't mean, like, actual VGA. You mean, like, display cables, right?
1:09:05Yeah, VGA. Yeah, so we are not doing display cables at this time. Let's see how well these go, I guess. We're going to see how... We got to... We're... This is something I think people often forget. It's a new segment. Dude, speaking of people often forgetting, this is 16 SKUs. We are a pretty small company. And this is 16 SKUs. No, this is 16 lengths for each connector type. Double it. This is 32 SKUs. Oh, that doesn't... That isn't what it sounds like. Oh, I understand. For each connection type. Yeah. All right. Wow. So what a lot of people forget is that in the grand scheme of things, we are actually still a pretty small company so we need to we're dipping our toes in we're going to start with usb and then we're going to make sure that people actually you know care and are willing to pay for you know a silicone jacketed um properly shielded high quality cable and if people care about that then we would love to explore doing hdmi display port um i was carrying audio cables that i stole from tynan uh on a bunch of my trips and i'd show it off all the time and people liked it it's very nice yep but just because people like it and just because it's very nice doesn't mean it will be necessarily sell commercially successful so we've really just gotta wait and we gotta see how it goes and that's how you that's how you kind of build that's how you build a business that's how you build momentum what actually got a merch message uh asking about display cables maybe we want to have a look at that one too which ones uh asking about display cables that's what we were talking about this whole time dan no i mean this has more specifics if you know what i mean oh uh sure yeah why don't we do that merch message then if you guys are oh right so if you want to get notified once these drop because i can tell you that our initial order quantity we have no idea which lengths are going to be the big sellers we went a little tentative on things.
1:11:09So if you want to get what you want to get, go to lmg.gg slash cable signup, make sure that you're on the newsletter and you will be notified as soon as these drop. We have taken our time with this. We have done it carefully, done it thoughtfully, and I'm actually really, really proud of this product. I'm very, very excited to launch this. Super cool. Okay. So yeah, why don't we, why don't we do merch messages? If you're not familiar with the show, merch messages are the way that you interact with it instead of just throwing money at your screen you throw money at lttstore.com which luke is going to bring up on his laptop right now which is of course a razor laptop laptop partner there you go yep yep look this is what their logo looks like when it's upside down um anyway just go ahead add something to your cart maybe be our new crash out t-shirt and instead of yeah throwing money at your screen you can throw money at lttstore.com get quality merchandise in return and you can leave a merch message so you just add something to your cart go ahead leave a merch message you can color code it however you like you can keep it anonymous you can show your first name and last initial and then you go ahead and check out it'll go through to producer dan who will reply to it or who will just like put it up down here or who will curate it for me and luke to talk about so we'll show you how that works yeah so i did get one asking about the display cables hey there you talked about your cables a few shows back and i was wondering what might or would come earlier a displayport cable with a chip or an hdmi cable with the fees and development costs and all of that that is such a good question that is a good question what i suspect is that we'd probably get into hdmi with the fees before we would get into a usb cable with a chip although this could come down to what our manufacturing partner has more ready to go because even though this exact design does not exist elsewhere that we are aware of because no one would be crazy enough to build a cable like this you're still working with a we are still obviously working with a factory that makes cables and they have certain capabilities and so if they already have a lot of expertise on the thunderbolt chip side of things then yeah doing a thunderbolt chipped uh cable might make a ton of sense um or if they have a ton of experience on the hdmi side that might make more sense uh tynan's actually been working with them a little bit oh actually cat os is right um we they do have a chip but it's it's not an active cable so that's the clarification here yeah pd does require it to communicate with devices what its capabilities are i do appreciate that os was like these are true spec they say they have a thing that means they have a chip so when i say chip i mean a thunderbolt chip uh which we do not have at this time why it's wrong again headline yeah i know right so it's going to depend on what their capabilities are and it's also going to depend on what the demand is right like if every other message coming in is like, hey, love TrueSpec cables.
1:14:22I love the ones that I have. I want HDMI cables, then yeah, maybe that'll be something that we'll explore. I would say that the reason that we tackled USB A2C and C2C first is because that's where we see the most value for the TrueSpec product philosophy. In Thunderbolt cables, I haven't had the same problems um i haven't had quite the same experience with cables not being what i expect them to be because generally speaking thunderbolt cables are uh quite max spec cables um and same goes for hdmi uh there's it's kind of confusing labeling because you know 4k generally means uh hdmi 1.4 if i recall correctly and then like 4k 60 i think means 2.0 4k 120 and then like or no 8k means 2.0 i look the point is they have labeling it's just like kind of stupid um and a lot of the time you don't even necessarily need the better one uh because if it's a short enough run it doesn't really matter a lot of the time the the older cables will still like totally work other times they won't though and you'll get like weird cutouts and stuff like that um like they are digital signals so i'm i would never snake oil market these and say like you connect this between your mp3 player or your you connect between your dac and your computer and you'll you'll hear the digital bits better or whatever that is bullshit no but i've heard like i think this was in flow plane chat or something somebody mentioned that like connecting their laptop and their deck when doing djing sets with like a good quality cable that they can feel like they can rely on more sounds great it's not that it's going to be a better quality connection no but knowing that it will work is and it's going to be thrown in bags and taken back out a bunch of different times and they they feel like they can if they can trust it more that has a value to them like that's cool that's a a like fairly mission critical connection that i might understand someone investing more in and to be clear they're not magic right like this is still a a two-spec usbc connector at the end like if it if it plugged into something and you and you don't put any strain relief and you let like four feet of this cable dangle off of it like it's yeah it's gonna eventually bend it'll it'll wear out don't be an idiot with your stuff right but we've built it to be as robust as we can possibly make it as as as bulletproof as we can possibly there's still gonna be something that'll fail and yada yada yada it's like any product i know they feel nice um and i have been told that there are cases where a digital cable can be used for analog purposes and there was someone who is super into ham radio at that event that we were at do you remember the the lan at the lan at the gaming house yeah yeah so there was someone there that was really into ham radio and basically went oh yeah i remember this yeah we use usb cables because of convenience or something but we're actually transferring analog um yeah i didn't understand that at all but they seemed like they knew what they were talking about and so i basically was like okay and he was like yeah i will be the first one in line to buy a bunch of these because those sound awesome yeah uh as soon as i was talking about the uh the high speed lines being individually shielded in there so that's why she's that's why she's such a thick boy right like that's that's a thick cable we're not selling this as some kind of like convenient lightweight you know it no it is i i've used it for like charging my phone in my pocket with a battery bank that is a questionable use case for this cable to be honest yeah she's heavy you know at the time it was just what i had but like it's not the best for that you kind of want somewhat of a junky cable to do that job to be honest because you want something little small and light and twistable and then you'll throw it away in a month or a couple months because it will wear out and be a piece of junk or you'll just lose it because you really care if that's usually my problem um yeah yeah that's another one uh okay so uh mystery man 321 in float plane chat says my dad does ham radio and he transmits a lot of his ham frequencies over voip he would have loved these okay so yeah i don't know how that oh okay no that i mean that makes sense i don't i don't know how you send an analog single a signal over usb that sounds really cool well i mean usb is just it's just you know conductors touching other conductors i mean technically it could send anything over i understand it's possible clapped k24 accord says talking about probably using them as antenna of some description with better shielding it is a problem with cheaper ham antennas using for antennas this is an entire realm of things that i know practically nothing about yeah okay interesting uh yeah me neither me neither uh eleanor is asking about like old 40 pin ipod cables oh yeah that is not in the plan yeah no not in the plan um yeah golden sound says you say you're not marketing it for sound quality purposes but as someone deep in the audio hobby i'd gladly play for a cable that just works uh i spend a lot of time testing measuring audio gear and crappy usb cables are a plague is that the golden sound oh i don't know am i oh oh did i just did i just do that thing where i get realize who they are i mean i think so oh crap whoops yeah i'm assuming this is the the golden sound whoopsie doodles that's cool i mean that's super cool that's that's good to hear
1:20:41is this uh ecc squad represent
1:20:48yeah that's that's the main thing i've heard from audio people so far like the the the dj thing i referenced, right? Yeah. Um, is like, it's not, it's not going to make it sound better, but if these are high importance cables, you might want a good one. I don't know. I don't personally often have USB cables fail. Um, I don't, I have that happen pretty regularly, but okay. Yeah. Yeah. I'm not, I mean, I'm not saying that they don't. It's also hard to tell when they do sometimes. That's a good point. I mean the whole it's, oh man, it's been interesting. Wendell has a video on float plane i don't think it's out on youtube yet on what is going on with dr5 and he doesn't mean in terms of pricing he means in terms of like overheating and like having weird problems and stuff like that very interesting very cool video um uh oh is this uh is this what's going on with like the threadripper pro platform and stuff uh i think it's related to that yeah i don't see it on youtube yet okay yeah kelp from falcon northwest was uh talking to me about that as well So then it's got to be that because he mentions Kelt in the video.
1:21:54It's a fantastic video. Watch it on flow plane. If you're not a flow plane, basically to solve one of the problems that Kelt was running into on one of his workstations, he had to, he had to reinvent the dominator airflow. Yes. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. So this is, this is that for sure. So like this, this stupid thing is, uh, hold on. I'm going to, I'm going to find it cool now because I think it's level one tech. Maybe it was this stupid thing is coming back. Yeah, buddy, but it's 3d printed now. Well, okay. Yeah, sure. Which is awesome But like it's cringe that we need this stuff, but there were several generations of Dominator airflow I don't want to spoil the video because it's Wendell's work But it's a fantastic video and it explains why we might need this stuff coming back and like how this could even potentially happen and like the design philosophy and the steps of it and all amazing video, but It is it was interesting because it reminded me of Linus Torvalds in the video with you talking about how like oh you know maybe a lot of problems that windows is blamed for is actually just people having bad ram um so i don't know yeah maybe there's something going on with usb cables i'm not going to step in and pretend that i know a lot about um usb cables my primary use case for them is charging my phone so i don't know i see a lot of people in chat just talking about everything from djing to uh like capturing um to what else the people what else are people talking about yeah this is so using them in your truck oh that was a truck one is a big one that was a big part of the reason that we went with silicone uh because i don't know about you guys but my android auto cables this is exactly i was talking to my brother about this and my brother does a lot of mods to his truck and i was talking about like yeah i don't think you're going to be like replacing all your cables with this but if you were like replacing your infotainment system and you needed a cable that was going to be in the back and you just never wanted to have to go replace it this might be a use case especially if it's going to get any sunlight and again it's not magic we didn't make magic here you know if you if you freaking you know close your door on it or something and it gets kinked like it you know it can break um but we did want it to be very resistant to uh to uv yeah and yeah someone responded um it's not often a cable fails when djing but you need a solid cable because well if it fails the show is temporarily over and you're f'd not worth risking it over a five dollar cable um well hey good news this won't be a five dollar cable yeah i don't know if we have uh i don't know if we have pricing it won't be that yet but it won't be five dollars i can five pound i guess i technically said i can guarantee it true spec xlr win um see xlr is one of those spaces where again and maybe this is ignorance on my part but i just didn't really feel like we were needed as much as we were in usb i suspect there are probably more available higher quality cables in that space already than the usb space i would guess i have no idea i mean maybe but i i also think there's been like a heavy heavy sort of commoditization commodification of even like professional cables over the last little while people are also saying they build their own xlr which i do believe is a thing oh i think dan built a bunch of the xlr cables around our studio it's even there oh he's not even there okay yeah so i'm sure that if we ever did do a true spec xlr cable dan would be happy to tell us what we need to do to do it right mulgami gold dual twisted pair there you go that's apparently the one he likes but that's that's a that's a completely separate conversation for the future yeah jam mesh says very hard to find quality usb cables on amazon these days yeah the inshification of amazon has become like kind of a problem because other places to buy things have been just decimated by amazon's dominance and amazon hiking up their seller fees, storage fees, fulfillment fees, and advertising fees, which you have to pay if you want any exposure for your product whatsoever, has basically created an environment where the only products that can survive on Amazon, that have enough margin on Amazon, are super, super high margin products, which is just another way of saying super low cost and high price.
1:26:43Bleh. Sure, we could do more topics. you want to pick a topic you wanted you wanted a new topic you pick it oh wait should we do sponsors i feel like oh wait no that was for sometimes i forget that what we're talking about is promoting ltt store and it's not like a topic was that an ltt store it was yeah it was and a merch message just went on for so long we just we just ended up talking about cables yeah sorry oh wait no we're still supposed to do another merch message dan i think we'll probably do another topic now oh sure okay sure you want to pick one sure what's apple got for us oh this is cool luke i thought you would like this you've been thinking of switching over to iphone what you have uh i mean that's technically true i guess yeah i have considered it i don't think it's going to happen but i have considered it i need to prove my humanity pretty quick hey did you see those weird captchas that people were posting for our websites yes okay i guess that's all the information we're getting about that i'm assuming that's a shopify thing oh okay it wasn't our websites it was ltd store got it so this is cool reminders on ios in in ios 26.2 is getting a new feature for urgent reminders this was posted on reddit by alex aguero lion You can mark a reminder as urgent And get an alarm When it's due You can snooze it If you can't get to it right away This feels like such a low lift Why isn't this on Android Everything should have this In fact this should be the default behavior Why would I set a reminder That I don't care about That I don't care It drives me insane Why would I set it at a specific time if it doesn't need to be done at that time?
1:28:35And if it needs to be done at that time, why would it go away before I have acknowledged that I have seen it? And you can literally put labels on alarms in your clock app. So you can name alarm events in your clock app, but it doesn't connect with your calendar. Why would that not be a thing? Because then if I name an event in my clock app, then it's not on my calendar. So I don't see it coming, but I do get the alarm for it. and then you're just making me do it in two different spots which is silly
1:29:10anyway shout out apple for doing it that's actually really cool yeah i thought this was like gonna be a meme topic we're making fun of it but no i never looked into it never looked into it uh bean man says isn't that already how it works on android no no cool all right uh next topic. I want to talk about this one because I have thoughts actually. We'll see how this goes. Apparently Samsung reminders can do it, which I haven't played around with. I will have to do that. I'm a pixel bro, so I have no idea. I'm on Samsung right now. Actually, I'm really enjoying the Fold 7.
1:29:46Cool. 20 % of videos shown to new, oh, it's new YouTube. Interesting. To new YouTube users is It's AI slop, apparently. There's a study that found this. It suggests that we try it in an incognito tab. I thought, why don't we do a fun little casual experiment? Would this make us a new user? A non-scientific experiment? I mean, it seems to think we are a new user. Is this seriously? What? This is how it goes. This is unironically how it goes. This is the first time accessing YouTube experience? Yep. try i have experienced this recently this is how it goes try searching to get started no i won't no you uh you will i bet you can go on shorts i bet you shorts will work
1:30:39yep okay all right is it ai slop or not i don't want to do all shorts uh this does not seem like ai slop um i would technically have no way of knowing for sure um
1:31:01i mean it doesn't have to be ai to be slop yeah what oh my god who cares um shorts suck dude
1:31:20Okay. Is this a new shorts format? This square? Oh, interesting. And is this thing on the left just like subway surfers? Yeah, it must be. Okay. No. This is an ad.
1:31:42Sick, dude. Is this line dancing? I don't know, but it's pretty good.
1:31:53this has so many filters on it that it's hard to tell the difference between this and AI
1:32:02I like literally can't really tell the difference that looks real that's clogging okay sure it's this thing again these big ones it's this thing So there's just like, it's interesting. It's just like kind of oddly satisfying stuff on the left. And there's a blur between it. Yeah. And they've, they've all had blurs between it. So the idea is just that you.
1:32:38Okay. My, my brain just kind of hurts right now. You know what? I gotta say, it doesn't seem like I'm not seeing a ton of AI slop. This could be. Not obvious. AI slop. I mean, there's definitely AI powered filter garbage. Oh, this is sponsored. So that's an ad. This is not gonna be AI slop either. Alright. So So we didn't get much, but we only looked at shorts. Yeah, we only looked at shorts. Okay, if I go back... Oh, hey, look at this. If I go back to home... Now you've looked at shorts, so now you can see it. Yep. Okay. So that's not slop. Nope. Well, it's not AI. Ryan Trahan is... I actually don't know.
1:33:31Are his videos good? I have no idea. Okay, cool. I opened a fake McDonald's drive-thru. It's not slop. I mean, that logo looks like AI slop. Okay, but... Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Okay, ad. we didn't get any in the shorts but as far as my understanding goes there's an incredible amount in shorts yeah is that outdoor boys again what's outdoor boys let's go oh this okay so that's real not ai slop ad confirmed not ai slop so we're really not getting 20 20%. So here's a question. I mean, okay. This is AI. I've seen these before. This just like crap hits a window garbage. Got it. Okay.
1:34:20So that's one. That thing on the end with the Boba T thing definitely might be, but I don't think we should click on it to check. Really? I don't know. I think we should click on it to check.
1:34:36um
1:34:40i don't know dude
1:34:45it looks like probably to me yeah i think this is probably oh yeah definitely yep that last one yep okay okay so in this one we're at 40 ai slop right here short shorts in in my interpretation which i have a thing that blocks shorts now but shorts were a lot of it especially i started getting into some uh some warhammer lore stuff while i was working on things just listening to it yeah and there is an incredible amount of uh ai voiced ai art warhammer stuff which is unfortunate so i was actually about to say i do wonder if part of the reason that new users are getting shown such a high percentage of ai slop is that and this is going to break your brains that's what they click on and enjoy
1:35:37because we can see here that while there is clearly ai slot that's just going to be shown to you immediately on the platform i'm also wondering when this study happened because if it was around christmas time i don't know when the study captured its data um i know it came out sort of around christmas time yeah saturday 27th of december a lot of the like yule log videos were very clearly ai slop like one that we saw had it was snowing in the fireplace because it was snowing outside out the window and it was also snoring snowing in the fireplace the really frustrating part about that is that the greatest yule log video already exists so it's not necessary for any new Yule log videos to be made.
1:36:24We were talking about this before the show. I think there are... I think there's one critical error and one minor error with this video. This is the only Yule log video that you'll ever need? With the actual video itself, I think there is, yeah, one critical error, one minor error. Because it is available in 8K, meaning that it is ready for any future TV you may ever own. Quality. Quality Yule log video. The... Oh, my sick brain can't think of it right now. Good. Because this is a perfect... The Denison Linus things. The stockings. The stockings are very out of place. No. They're exactly where they belong.
1:37:07No, they're weird. They're in the perfect place. And if you criticize this Yule log video, you're basically... No, they're weird. You're basically saying that the swap videos need to exist. Nope. Yep. no that's basically it no so there's no christmas music on it there's just crackling fire which is pretty sick but for people that want christmas music that means you need another thing playing the music which might be okay we worked around that we did we bluetooth pucked the receiver and played christmas music and then had that on the tv but every single time i've put it on someone has commented that the stockings are weird every single time i've put it on i'll tell you what here's what we could do and every place that i've gone that has had a yule log video playing and i'm like hey there's this better one i can put it on they go oh but it doesn't have the music and i'm like uh and then that was worth fixing at my parents place with a bluetooth plug blah blah blah but it's not necessarily even really possible elsewhere these are my concerns all right i'll tell you what i'll tell you what okay we get ai to generate us an eight hour Christmas and we get AI to generate us a new stalking and then you'll be happy.
1:38:19Like I understand the music licensing is like a huge problem which is why isn't there and personally I actually really just like the fire cracking. Yeah this is quality. I think it's great. This is this is as nature intended. But the people have spoken and they want music and this has been a problem for me. I feel like I'm gonna have to start having like a default kit that I go to Christmas events with that has bluetooth pucks in it no it's the children that are wrong i i couldn't be the one who's out of touch the stockings though i get it the stockings are pretty weird the stockings are a little weird i think stockings are pretty weird yeah well and you could technically solve that with ai you i mean you could also solve it with not ai because you could just like basically sticker on a stocking on top of it we could we could do that Yeah, we could do different stockings.
1:39:07We could put some music on it. Or hear me out. We already spent enough money on this stupid, weird project. I shouldn't say stupid. It's actually pretty sick. Because the pitch was kind of brilliant. At the time, YouTube was heavily rewarding watch time, both in terms of AdSense and in terms of channel promotion. So this was a James initiative. He was like, we should do a tech. I think it's awesome. I'm very happy that we have one. We'll do the highest resolution you'll log ever. And I was like, Fantastic. Let it never be said that I don't, you know, provide the support that's needed for out of the box projects.
1:39:47Go for it. And so we made it. I think it was him and Brandon that basically like camped out there for eight hours, stoking the fire and recording this and making sure that like, that the camera media kept getting changed and stuff. Partway through the video, a log falls out of the fire. Oh yeah. There's, there's some stuff that happens. You can see some spikes in the video timeline because people clearly scrub through it to find it. So I went to the biggest one, which I think is when it happens. The video's so long that trying to snipe the right timestamp is going to be tough. Oh yeah, 100%. I don't know when it happened.
1:40:27And this is probably stored on tape somewhere for most of the year and then makes its way to the edge servers uh oh you know what there's probably someone in the comments has it pretty much guarantee that yep oh okay hold on back to your laptop oh well okay we missed it luke it's okay wait okay just wait i'm waiting just wait i'm waiting wait you need to have patience i have patience holiday season there it goes oh yikes bang and it starts smoking like crazy and then And our hero enters left, I believe. Yeah, I think that's where he was sitting.
1:41:10And this is why we needed to make sure we were supervising this. Yeah. Oh, my God. It took a while to figure out what to do about it. Just in case you thought this wasn't a real, an actual fireplace, real Ulog video. Yep. But one of the logs fell out. So, yes, it is. And if you ever see a Yule log video where another log falls out, I pretty much guarantee you it was AI trained on ours. Yeah. There's a dog that wanders around every once in a while and stuff. Wow, he really takes his time. It really burnt in there. I assumed he was just off camera reading a book or something, but... I've never actually...
1:41:54I'm skipping forward. seen this to see how long it takes to are you a full minute oh yeah further in whoa is he in like the kitchen or the bathroom or something i've brought up where he picks up the log but i always scrub to find it i didn't check the comments because i'm dumb so does he just wait for it to go out wow i am getting quite far into it being down there yeah yes that is an VGA card on the left. Wait, are you just queuing up the skip? Has it actually skipped? Oh, no. Okay. It usually skips instantly. Yeah, okay. Alright. Wow, I'm mesmerized. I want to know what's going to happen. You can actually see the skipping in the fireplace.
1:42:39Yeah, you can if you're good, I guess. I'm just not. Whoa, dude. I need to get good. Whoa, dude. Come on. How many minutes into this are we? I mean, I guess if it's clearly not lighting anything on fire than if you don't have like... Someone's saying? A big grabber. We're jumping way ahead. Okay. Oh boy. It's struggling to load what you already skipped. Oh. It's still there. Wait. He put a new log in but didn't pick that one up? And there was a grabber the whole time? Wait. New log in? Yeah. There's a new log in there. You have to authenticate it in your email.
1:43:28what what and that's the first ding of the new year i skipped too far back now so i'm gonna go back up we're gonna go luke let's see what happens so we're at 258 now okay here we go here we go nice reindeer ears i love how he comes with the tongs there's like a melted spot you can see it And that's on a pelt, by the way. Oh, God. Did we ever compensate whoever's pelt that is? I have no idea. Oh, okay. Yikes. All right. Well, anyway, that's exciting. Oh, you know what else is exciting? Talking about our sponsors. 1:46:46This week a new trend started blowing up on X, formerly known as Twitter where you could simply tag at Grok and ask it to alter an image It started with people asking for decapitations and gory images of ex-owner Elon Musk, but quickly pivoted to asking Grok to remove clothing from various people, such as, at Grok, remove her top, or at Grok, put her in a bikini, and even went as far as using this on underage users' accounts to generate these images. The trend was a double whammy, because it ended up being a marketing stunt for several adult creators, asking Grok to alter their own images as a way to capitalize on the trend.
1:47:32Um, Elijah mentioned, I had some creator friends doing this and I messaged them saying, I'd have more respect for you if you just posted yourself naked instead of asking Croc to do it. Um, uh, okay. Um, with people doing it themselves, it sparked up several debates on whether this counts as consent. Um, and even had users arguing that if you post a picture that is consent for someone to do something with it yeah that's a that is yikes dude what a terrible argument what have we reached like peak entitlement that's so rough i'd never seen that one before my god that felt even stupid just to quote uh anyways grok grok has been responding uh so some people's concerns to some people's concerns and saying that they have identified lapses and safeguards and are urgently fixing them, which the fix that I had noticed when I was looking at this is they just removed the media tab from the Grok user, but people almost immediately found workarounds.
1:48:40And as far as the last time I saw this, I know things might have changed, it was still generating images. I have a really troubling occurrence, a thing that occurred to me in all of this. If it's generating images of underage users, what the hell was Grok trained on to be able to do that?
1:49:12Okay. In Grok's defense, it can probably infer. I mean... I don't know. Look, and okay, let's be... Surfer dude said the Epstein files. Sorry. Not actually funny. I shouldn't laugh. Let's be very clear here. I have not looked at any of this output. I'm not gonna. I don't want to. You shouldn't want to either. So it is very possible that, to your point, it was not trained on any CSAM. Guys, I'm not trying to defend it. What I'm saying is that I don't think this is like hard evidence that it was trained on CSAM. I think that those are very different things. That's what I'm about to get into. So it is possible that these outputs feature simply size scaled down, you know, trained on adults imagery.
1:50:12um if it isn't then it raises bigger questions around oh yeah what the heck this data set is that would be able to generate this because an ai generative ai is not truly generative it's never seen anything that isn't in its data set it can't imagine anything that doesn't have some basis within its data set somewhere. And so for it to know what something looks like, it has to have seen some manner of reference image, generally speaking. And people in full plane chat are saying, I think we've heard stories of CSAM being found in other LLM training sets. I don't know. I know nothing about this. This is not a topic I'm deeply researched on.
1:50:58I'm just saying that it being able to at least attempt that does not just automatically mean that it was. Um, and that, that is honestly irrelevant of whether or not it's been found in other data sets or not. Um, so yeah. And there's a couple of other things. Like, I don't, I don't know if this is true, but Insomniac says that the, the database was apparently the Twitter media database, uh, which to their knowledge was never purged after Elon bought it and could contain, um, I mean, whether it was purged, Lord only knows what. After or not, it could potentially contain that. I'm not saying it doesn't.
1:51:41The only thing I'm saying is it doesn't guarantee that it does. That is it. This is not that deep of a statement. Laws Earth says, I have a little knowledge in the medical space, and there's medical imagery of humans of all types.
1:51:56I mean, that does make sense. Yeah, but not what it was for. No. Is Grok trained on medical imagery? Almost certainly. i don't know i mean yeah you ask an ai like what's this rash how how the would it know if it doesn't have medical imagery in it that makes sense
1:52:16yeah rough uh yeah the person who broke this news to me um is rather against generative image and video um i don't know if they want to be named or not so i'm chilling maybe if they're watching they'll ping me and let me know um but the the person who broke this to me
1:52:41for i know they're extremely against this i don't think they're exactly searching for fun uh but their concern which after reading a couple articles on this i share their concern pretty strongly is the articles are too very valid reason scared to show the stuff and through text really doesn't get across how bad it is and this was one of the problems that they had so they had some examples of things um not quite what you think there's a lot of those had been removed so it was like links to a thread where it very obviously happened because you could see the person's request still there and then you could see a response from grok that had been deleted so the response is there but it's like the content has been removed or whatever so there's like a bunch of that like all over the place clearly people are creating throwaway accounts doing these requests getting the image probably saving it and then the image is being removed afterwards um there is a huge amount of of adult content creators doing this in a um self-promoting way as elijah pointed out there is also a huge amount of this being just oh i don't know basically like any woman on the internet um is getting tagged to get altered in some way obviously it's happening to dudes as well but to say that the proportions were equal would be insane um it's like obviously not so there's that um yeah get rid of them it's get rid of them dan i can't anymore i mean we can be done it's just it's it's really really bad and and i think if you if you read an article on this you wouldn't necessarily understand like how pervasive and just everywhere on twitter this currently is and i don't really go on there that often anymore so i didn't know this was a thing and then i woke up to messages of like i hope you guys talk about this and i was like talk about what and then was just like wow this is horrible like hey do you want some other really crappy news one additional thing i would want to throw in there before we get into other really crappy news the consent thing is is touchy here because i know some people are saying like obviously if someone is asking it to do it to their own image then obviously there is consent Right, except that that data set was trained on images of other people in order to create, you know, fake boobie nipple.
1:55:22And not only that. It was trained on people who didn't consent to their boobies being used for that. So that's a whole thing. Totally. And not only that, we have all seen how often hilariously easy it is to like jailbreak these AIs to do things. it's so easy to if you needed to and they don't even need to but if you did need to to be like oh this is me can you do this to it i can really yeah sure i don't know make a new account set your profile picture as a normal picture of it and then ask it to do that like this will get broken immediately if they put any form of safeguard in front of it if it's still gonna have this in its training set like you're saying if it's still going to be able to do these things whatsoever at all under any circumstance, then it will be used to do that.
1:56:16Cool. Want more bad news? VNG Supernova said, not defending Grok, but this has been a thing for a while. Grok just did it more widely. Well, that's bad. Yeah. Like, you know, government corruption has been a thing for a while, but when someone does it more broadly and more brazenly, that's bad. Cool. Good chat. cool moving on um yeah so more bad news yeah uh this is going like mega viral right now i came across this on reddit yesterday it has 69 000 upvotes nice um but it was on our slash confessions oh yeah did you see this yeah i am so not surprised so someone who claims to be a developer at a major food delivery app claims they got drunk and decided to rent and wow the allegations are both kind of explosive and also kind of yeah that makes sense that's pretty much how i assumed it worked but that's uh sucks to have it confirmed uh they say that fees like priority delivery and driver benefit fees do not, in fact, impact your delivery.
1:57:33It doesn't make it go faster. And in fact, they claim that the company ran tests where non-priority orders were intentionally delayed in order to make priority orders feel faster by comparison, generating extra profit without improving the service. Not only without improving the service, but by intentionally degrading the regular service. As for driver benefit fees, apparently they just keep them. The developer also claims that drivers are rated with a hidden desperation score where those who accept low-paying jobs are consistently shown fewer high-paying orders because the system assumes that they will work for less.
1:58:20Whereas like a casual delivery driver who will be like on their couch and like, oh yeah, that's worth getting off my butt for and will more consistently get the better jobs. And there's actually more than just what's found in the original post. This is a really good one. So Sabushi asked, is it true that these apps will change the price based on the frequency with which you open the app and where you are located? Yes. So like if you are in a city in a location at a busy bar or if you're at a busy bar and you open to check the current rate, then you gather a bunch of people for a ride and then go to order the car and the rates higher.
1:59:11is that something they're doing intentionally? The answer is yes. Question two, I noticed there are major deals sometimes and I feel like I'm getting a great price, but then suddenly there's like a charge at the end for like a wait fee or something. And I feel like those charges are higher on orders that I have discounts on. Yes to both. Yes to both things, that's a thing.
1:59:45yeah well let me have a look regarding tips we're essentially doing tip theft 2.0 we don't steal them anymore because we got sued. Instead, we use predictive modeling to dynamically lower the base pay. So if the algorithm predicts that you're a high tipper and you'll likely drop like 10 bucks, it will offer the driver like$2 in base pay.
2:00:11Why is everything so predictably cartoon villain evil, Luke? Yeah. Like how hard would it be? to build a system that's just sustainable for everyone. Is it that hard? For food delivery apps? Yeah. Is it just, could it not be done? Yeah, I don't think so. I don't think it can, personally. I can explain why. No, I'm saying that I think I do know, actually, and that I don't think it can be done. um my argument is that if for what i've heard of the economies of scale of these companies it's actually surprisingly expensive to run i don't understand why necessarily uber apparently became profitable for the first time in 2023 this is my point yeah okay carry on and they did so from my understanding largely through these like very abusive mechanisms um so if they're going to be profitable also known as worth anyone's time working on it at all um then they're either going to need to charge a bunch more or they'll have to screw over their drivers and if they charge a bunch more they won't be competitive on the market and we know as consumers that this is actually a lot less important to people than burrito taxi three dollars cheaper right so so i guess what you're saying is that there is no there is no magic burrito fairy and so if you want someone to drive like half an hour to go get a burrito and you don't expect to pay them a living wage which um i actually i i was looking up what the current vancouver uh living wage is for 2025 uh so according to living wage bc uh which is the resource that we use to determine our internal minimum wage so we don't use like the bc minimum wage we use the uh the living wage for metro vancouver um so that is 27.85 which means that before any profit whatsoever uh before any vehicle expense before any tipping before anything you would have to pay what does this work out to about uh 14 you would have to pay 14 for your burrito delivery assuming that the parent company made nothing and there was before those things why before those because they're going to drive for half an hour so before you even account for any of that stuff just the labor alone you would have to pay$14.
2:03:04Then separately, you will have to also be able to cover like any depreciation of the vehicle fuel expense. So that's going to drive it up even more. And then if the company running the service wants to make anything, then it will be even more than that. And I think we all know that no, it's not$20 for a burrito delivery. So somehow they have to do it or somehow they have to make it an amount that you're willing to pay. There's definitely more to this. Like Katowes is saying you can you can do more than one food delivery per drive yeah but also there's overhead like you got to drive you got to drive back somewhere at the end of the day yeah no for sure i i think your point is prudent um it's rough food delivery apps are brutal kind of for everyone involved i think you could argue even the person receiving yeah i mean it's just it's like it's a bad model right it's almost like we figured out grocery stores like a really long time ago which very smart very efficient yeah and then we were like you know what incredible you know what fuck grocery stores yeah no i think they're pretty good still actually no i i generally think they're pretty good too yeah oh man under Undercutting the stores?
2:04:26I don't even know what that necessarily means. I know they've been caught cranking, like, setting prices for stores, which is crazy. Oh, yeah. No, no. So they, no, I think by undercutting, they mean they're, like, demanding better pricing from the stores, or they, like, won't list them on the app and stuff like that. So they want to absorb margin from the stores, absorb margin from the drivers, and absorb margin from tips, apparently. Yeah. That's crazy. That's crazy, dude.
2:04:59Yeah, Mavs guy says, I almost always prefer to go get it myself. I gotta admit, I, there's people who are not gonna like this, but for especially certain things, I would rather go to the drive-thru myself and like eat food while I drive than have it delivered to me. Wait, why wouldn't people like that? I don't understand. Well, a lot of people don't like people eating while they drive. Oh. Didn't even occur to you. You're hilarious. It's also technically illegal. Well, don't tell anybody that. Actually, it is distracted driving that is illegal. I could make the argument that I am not distracted by that.
2:05:41What if you had a hands-free burger? Yeah, right? A piece of rope. Who drives with their hands? Yeah. What year is it?
2:05:56it's also just good to get out i think yeah i like it honestly i don't there's been a there's been a rough amount of food delivery usage in in our place over the last little while no available kitchen often very focused on work trying to get the house unscrewed up but that's like that's a habit that we're going to be cutting pretty hard i also have vance get lunch for me more than I'd like. It's not because I want to. Vance is not a Uber driver. No, I know. Vance is paid appropriately. Well, yeah, he's compensated for it. I just mean like I'd like to get out more. Is he driving the company car too?
2:06:32People get mad at me if I go out. That also helps. You're that tier of person. Sorry? You're that tier of person. That's got to be so annoying. Stop wrapping cables. You're costing us money. it's legitimately kind of annoying like I'd like to I'd like to just you know go to A &W and get a teen burger you know double teen lettuce wrapped it's like actually pretty alright in the whole mix of things A &W Canada man it's great you don't feel sick afterwards the macros considering you're getting a burger at a fast food restaurant are pretty good love me some A &W Canada that is my S tier fast food I'm always down for a teen that was my lifeline at the beginning of the housework project I'm not that kind of influencer
2:07:38I feel it is necessary to clarify on this timeline so just because you don't know that AW burgers are named after members of a family, basically. It's a mama burger and a papa burger and a baby burger. And a chubby chicken. Yeah, I don't know where that came from. Yeah, well, I mean, from the egg, obviously, which came from the chicken. Which came from the egg? Which came from the chicken? Oh my god, reality's a lie! Which came first? Ah.
2:08:15Alright, what are we supposed to do? be doing here? Ugh. Egg.
2:08:22Egg came first. Let's do a short update on the December 26th WAN show discussion regarding YouTube views. Remember when I was talking about those paid views on that video and I wanted a clarification on what counts as a view? Like if somebody just watches five seconds of it and skips it, is that a view? So I did get a response from my YouTube rep and apparently YouTube no longer hides the sauce, they gave me a straightforward answer. Heck yeah. And said, what is this? What is this summary? This has to be AI. Who did this? Where is this? Ugh. This is a trash summary. Why would it be like this? The email was so much simpler.
2:09:10I'm just going to read off the email. Okay, where's my email from? we shouldn't use output maybe we're gonna have to get more explicit about rules again around ai internally uh yeah we might have to do that somebody wrote that oh okay well good on them then uh okay so april said it qualifies as a view when the following is met for skippable in-stream ad views a viewer has to watch 30 seconds or until the end of the video whichever comes first okay so if they like skip around in it but they reach the end of the video because they only cared about the conclusion or something that counts okay it counts when a viewer clicks on an element of your video ad such as a call to action card banner thumbnail or logo when this occurs a click will also be counted for bumper and non-skippable in-stream ad views true view views are not counted for these ad formats because viewers can't skip the ad so their intent isn't clear for in feed video ad views a viewer clicks on the thumbnail and is taken to the video watch page or a viewer watches the video autoplay in line for at least 10 seconds there is no scenario where simply watching with no engagement a long form video ad for just a few seconds would count as a view on a long form video so we did get clarification so what that means to me then is for that number of views to have gone up they must have bought a ton of impressions against that thing i think it was one of those cases where the like we're we're cool with hisense and hisense is cool with us but i think the agency had their own internal kpis around how many views it was supposed to have worth it to them to just create that reality i guess yeah when like i don't personally see a ton of value in that because i see zero it's it's organic content just let it let it do its thing it's a great factory tour you guys should check out the hisense factory tour we did if you haven't already it's a really cool production line and um yeah however many views it gets is is is fine and forcing people to like watch 30 seconds of it or whatever doesn't seem like it yeah it creates it creates a time value dan can you see my screen
2:11:40that thing
2:11:44so maybe a little column a column b
2:11:59okay new topic i guess yeah hit me oh should we do short new topic and then those things yeah let's do a topic micron highlights just how grim the DRAM demands are. Micron reported a record revenue of$13.6 billion in their first fiscal quarter. Yeah, that's one quarter revenue. Oh my God. Which is up 57 % year over year. Even with this increase and migrating resources away from Crucial, Micron's in-house consumer brand of memory, it was still only able to achieve roughly 50 to 65 percent of the demand that some of their top customers have
2:12:48whoa could you see micron coming back after the ai surge is done honestly i don't know about that they just they don't really have to you mean crucial coming back right yeah i think that's well i think that's what the discussion question means it was written as micron but they don't really have to because micron can just make their money yeah other people label it just selling it to Kingston or Corsair or G-Skill or Adata or Team Group or Patriot or okay I'm running out of them but the point is that there's a bazillion in one module manufacturers that you can buy micron dyes on and so I just don't think that the that the crucial brand I think it would be like cool matters to them more competition in that space I guess but when they're all just colluding on everything anyways um in which space in the DRAM space oh no I just mean because like we don't need more competition we don't need more competition in the module manufacturing space yeah that's probably fair and then I mean more competition is always good but sort of I mean I really it's pretty good I really think there's enough in the DRAM module space I mean here hear me out I'm not saying there isn't necessarily enough I just always think competition is good yeah okay agreed agreed however there is a lot i do think that there can be enough at a certain point where you just have enough i don't think it appreciably uh impacts pricing and so i think this is enough yeah i just do there's a lot that don't necessarily matter well it's regional right that's probably fair like my first computex i hardly recognized i could i could probably have found like two dozen d-ram module manufacturers i'd never heard of but crucial was pretty global in that regard crucial was great and honestly i will miss crucial more on the ssd side than i will on the d-ram side because i could trust that they were using good nand and i could trust that they were using decent controllers and firmware and i could trust that if there was a problem they had my back whereas i don't necessarily have the same degree of trust with every random storage manufacturer and storage is one of those things where unlike dram where if it's working it is probably going to work for a very long time storage not only degrades and so therefore is quite reliant on using a high quality product that will last a long time but also holds my freaking data anything that carries my data is way more important to me than something that makes my game fps go boom boom clicky faster like it's it's it's priorities right like i just i don't i don't need more fps that badly but i definitely do need something to not lose my data that badly
2:15:46yeah all right dan what do you want us to do float plane announcements we can do that if you are big into insider knowledge flow plane is the place to be this week do you want to bring it up yeah oh that's the video we're highlighting i did a little workshop with my son um and didn't link it uh it didn't link well that's here we go got it he's got it i did a little workshop with my son oh exciting and if you have ever thought to yourself gee you know i like watching linus host a video but i wonder why that is i gave uh about i think it's about 30 minutes long i gave my son a crash course on you know what it takes to get better at hosting in as little as half an hour.
2:16:45Just a bunch of little tips and tricks that I've picked up over the years. And so far, the reception has been really positive, actually, from the community. And it was the kind of thing that wasn't intended to be an exclusive over on Floatplane. But we were having him help host that Kindle review video. And I realized, I kind of went, oh, hey, this would be kind of neat. We did this before with Tom Peterson and Ryan Shrout when they came up here from Intel. And I needed them to say something on the video. And I was like, oh, you guys need to improve or like our retention is going to suck. And people really liked that exclusive.
2:17:23So this is kind of a longer. I'm excited for this. Longer version of that with an even greener host who has functionally zero experience. So if you've never hosted a video before, it's a, I won't call it a master class, but it's an adequate class. An adequate video class. Yeah, adequate video class. Exactly. Thank you. Because I'm not, I'm not trained. I'm not the best video host I've ever met, not even by a long shot, but I'm, I'm pretty, I'm pretty darn okay. And I think that I have a pretty good style of sort of identifying things and, and explaining them. So yeah, it's a, it's a good little, good little exclusive.
2:18:01There was definitely more like I watching. I haven't watched this yet, but having watched the the main video, there was definitely more learning to be done. But for a first video, it did really, really, really well. Yeah, it was awesome. It was cool to watch. If you're more into, you know, merch in this week's Why is WAN Late? Oh, it says I work with Kyle, which I assumed meant Sammy. But no, he means I worked with Kyle. He writes these in your voice. on choosing which version of the non-infringing purple screwdriver we ultimately chose for mass production i'm just going to mute this uh basically kyle brought me five different versions of it and i had to pick which one to my eye and he also checked with other people this is not a monarchy but i had to pick which one to my eye uh was the one to go to mass production and turn into the kind of eye and desk candy that so many members of the LTT community have been enjoying the heck out of.
2:19:08Someone actually posted an incredible collection of LTT screwdrivers over on the forum. This is nuts. Whoa, wow. wow black shaft silver shaft orange and black black shaft black shaft silver shaft black and black they've got the all black that match and the orange and black stubby several shaft extensions both noctua colorways the non-infringing retro screwdriver and they've even got a bunch That's wild.
2:20:18I actually have seen there's, there's quite a few really good ones of people posting the new, oh yeah, here, this is the very, this is the top post on the subreddit right now. Like, damn, how freaking awesome is that? Wow. That looks great. Right. And it's like, it's there, there's a, there's a bunch of people posting this stuff. Let's see if I can find it. Blah, blah, blah. Oh, hold on a second. It has, I'm not, oh wait, I am logged in. I don't know what, I don't know whose account I'm on right now. So I don't know how it's sorting anything. Uh, okay. Neat. Let's not worry too much about that.
2:20:58Cause there's like week old posts that are coming up, but lately there's been a bunch. Good stuff. Why is this logged into someone's Reddit account? I'm going to log it out. Cool. Good chat. Is it just the email that's, I don't know. Oh, okay. Yep. Let's not worry too much about that. Yeah, that's good. Cool, good chat. Oh, this is an interesting one. We were actually, we meant to talk about this last week, but speaking of insiders spilling the beans, an alleged former Amazon developer for Amazon Go reached out to me to correct the record on the AI in these stores just being remote humans. So you remember when, what is that thing where AI stands for actually Indians?
2:21:54Oh, yeah. Yeah, okay. So it broke a little while ago that the Amazon Go store was allegedly just humans. Mechanical Turk. Yeah, Mechanical Turking, the cashierless checkout and the machine vision. Mechanical Turk is an Amazon product. So in this case, it probably would have literally been Mechanical Turk. However, a programmer who says that they worked on the Amazon Go technology reached out to me to say, hey, that's not actually really true. In fact, they claim that the reporting on that Mechanical Turk story was basically akin to journalistic malpractice because 80 % of the actions observed in store were high confidence and were actually handled entirely by the machine learning models, while only 20 %-ish were mid or low confidence and were sent to be reviewed by Mechanical Turk for accuracy.
2:22:55the emailer also wanted to make it clear that they are not an amazon bootlicker and were recently fired and i'm gonna not share the last part of their anecdote but it's really funny really but it would make it really easy to identify them that's probably fair but it's very funny uh it makes me if if real makes me really for sure believe this person yeah i'm sorry i would love to tell you guys but i think i do not want to i do not want to out them yeah and this would probably i guarantee you they're the only person who did this thing that they say they did um to sort of demonstrate that they're not an amazon bootlicker so they just wanted us to know that the way that the story presented it was not really fair and mechanical turk was used for quality control it doesn't really change that clearly they ran into a lot of the same challenges that self-driving vehicles have been running into where the first 80 percent is you know doable without the you know the heaviest lift and then it's that it's that last little bit it's the edge cases that you have to solve for that are the hardest part that make a project like this potentially no longer cost effective um and so ultimately they're obviously not working on that anymore Amazon did can the program as far as I'm aware.
2:24:22But no, it also wasn't just a bunch of people watching security camera feeds and entering your checkout data.
2:24:35Okay. TeamViewer? TeamViewer. Oh, yeah, sure. Did we do sponsors? We have one more, but we can talk about TeamViewer first. I'm so irritated. it's not news what do we do but i'm just really annoyed i feel like something's got to be done the team viewer community is really upset about this uh hey my perpetual license was deactivated for remote access so only land mode works like what i'm not asking for updates or new features i'm simply asking for my original remote access functionality which existed at the time of purchase to not be taken away disabling the main feature of a perpetual license is affection effectively a termination or downgrade of the license i want you to fix this yeah we're on the same ship i hope they change heart yeah they're not they're not going to they are not taking enough flack for this so let's help with that and uh hey don't use team viewer cool oh no karashi says we were hit by this at work ended up being strong-armed into paying for a discounted subscription license why would you give them your business use something else there are other problems there are other programs guys no do we make like a video guide on getting yourself out of team viewer that's a pretty good idea because we still have stuff we use it for internally and we're gonna have to get rid of it so like we need to get rid of it like now because i'm thinking like we got to do something they have to they deserve to be struck i'm down is that something that like labs wants to work on potentially i mean in prep we could probably uh it seems a little out of use case but does it yeah i think so are we are we testing i have no idea i mean latency would matter i don't know adequate remote viewer service i'm just you know i'm gonna add it i'll add it to the i'll add it to the pile okay all right yeah let's work on alternatives the team viewer because yeah just like i don't know team viewer basically yeah big time i'm very sorry to hear um that your company is still giving the money because if you cancel perpetual licenses you should just you should just not be allowed to continue to exist yeah big time yeah a lot of people are talking about rust desk apparently it's free and open source and can be self-hosted which is not the sales pitch that you think it is for a lot of organizations uh maybe it can also here i'm going to your screen okay it does not have to be self-hosted okay that's good that's cool it's really cool that they have a self-hosted option there are a bunch of places that will not want that uh people are talking about ninja rmm i mean if you're looking to avoid a subscription that sure as heck is not going to be uh the way that you're going to want to go uh what else we got apparently pancreas knows a bunch of options float viewer confirmed no um noah deboss asks how about parsec to my knowledge parsec doesn't do mobile that's a that was a big one for us as we needed something that worked mobile to desktop and desktop to mobile without this is not a prepped topic um without knowing competitors or anything parsec has been really nice for video editing stuff internally yeah evan benjamin says parsec is only on android not on ios based i mean no that's not that's not a competitive advantage for them maybe they'll figure it out eventually all right well yeah maybe this is something that we'll we'll look into on the writing side and then we'll go from there i mean we're labs would be happy to like test something if you want something tested here it just yeah yeah that's fine that's fair enough yeah labs is lazy i get it all right we'll do the whole video it'll be like we'll just rebrand the channel labs tech tips forget that linus guy who needs him i'm gonna make a labs channel i'll just do when it's gonna happen i'll do half of when show actually yeah yeah get it right all right why don't we do our second uh sponsor read here the show is brought to you by motion great what what now tordirk said testing your patience is a kind of testing so i'm kind of really good at the show is brought to you by motion gray Hunting over a desk for those long gaming sessions can really start to make your back feel stiff.
2:29:27So maybe it's time to upgrade your desk. Thanks to our sponsor MotionGray. You don't have to empty your wallet in the process. Their Ergo2 Pro sit-stand desk is an affordable solution for anyone who wants more out of their office or gaming space. It comes with two German Bosch motors, which give smooth and reliable height adjustments from 28 to 46 inches. and it can handle up to 176 pounds of weight which based on the quick math of the business is about 704 costco glizzies okay everything arrives in a single box with all the tools you need to set it up so stop settling for a static desk and instead get an affordable sit stand desk with our link in the video description and then pile it with hot dogs uh yeah radon man says what is a glizzy i assume at that it's a hot dog hot dog you know for labs's last quarterly event we did we did fine dining and curling oh okay that's cool the fine dining was costco nice nice So we went to the Costco food court and piled up like a huge, I borrowed one of the like, you know, cardboard box things that you can get when you're at Costco.
2:30:43And we just filled it up mostly with hot dogs, but there was other things in there as well. Get some pizza. The fries with the gravy? There was pizza. Everyone could like order basically whatever. And then we got a few spares. Did anyone get a chicken? No, because we didn't go into Costco. Did I tell you my son pulled that move a little while ago? Just a whole rotisserie chicken? Yeah. He just like, we were getting lunch at the, at the deli. It wasn't actually at Costco, but it was like at a grocery store that had rotisserie chickens and everyone was like getting like a, you know, like a meal thing.
2:31:13And he just got an entire rotisserie chicken. Sick. And I was like, are you going to eat all that? And he's like, I'm 13. Protein goals accomplished. So anyway, carry on. Yeah. That's a good answer.
2:31:26Yeah. Um, what was I going to say? Yeah, and I was stunned at how cheap it was to feed a large amount of people. I'm stunned that for the simple price of how much we save on their hot dogs and rotisserie chicken, Costco managed to infiltrate our sponsor spots without paying us any actual money. All right, that's it for the sponsors for the show today. We've got a couple more topics, and then I think it's time for After Dark. Oh, here's a good one. An unlucky RTX 5080 buyer received rocks in their box in socks, eating locks.
2:32:54Posted it to TikTok? It doesn't matter. The point is they got rocks in their box and Best Buy, after I think about a six minute investigation, determined that they weren't going to do anything for them. So they went and did their own darn investigation, finding that after placing constant calls to filing a Better Business Bureau complaint, filing a police report, and finding evidence that the package gained weight in transit, the user... Which is like so pathetic. They didn't even Indiana Jones it properly. I know, right? Criminals, man. Yeah, I know. i know um so basically found in their own investigation that the package gained weight in transit and got best buy to finally agree to refund and to best buys credit even price matched the original deal the buyer and this is hilarious apparently got a commemorative tattoo from their girlfriend to uh well i guess if it's a commemorative tattoo then it's to commemorate the ordeal but i'm actually i'm not finding that image i do it's the very last one i've got it nice so it was it was a tough gaming gpu so that's the asus tough gaming logo on a rock which is pretty funny it's actually pretty good it does look like the logo is glowing and everything this is one of those ones where it's like i can see i can definitely see both sides of the story i mean best buy must get see that's the thing about fraudsters is they will find any opportunity to fraud and so best buy probably does get a lot of fraudulent i got bricks in my gpu box dude i yeah i worked there this happened all the time like actually all the time so i can understand why they're just like people would buy herder forget it xbox 360s and return them without the hard drives um obvious what's going on there customer service person wouldn't notice because they don't necessarily they're not necessarily familiar with xbox 360s or whatever they'd be yeah there'd be missing stuff all the time why buy an accessory when you can just like steal it yeah right yeah um so i can understand that but also like this stuff does happen stuff does get stolen in transit and so i this user was rightfully outraged and the fact that it was so easy to investigate and find out that yeah when this package was weighed it stopped weighing the same it just feels like Best Buy didn't even want to solve it.
2:35:33I don't think they did. And the dumbest part is that because of the way that this happened Best Buy should actually be entitled to compensation from the courier. This is the courier's problem. This is not Best Buy's liability. So that that shopper was one tough customer.
2:35:59I feel like Dan was prepped for that. He's like loaded and ready. I was hover handing it. Yeah. Yeah. You know, like that old movie from probably, I'm assuming when we were relatively young of that kid who played baseball and his arm would like, you'd hear it like, and then he'd like go and it would fire off and he ended up playing in like professional leagues. Do you have any idea what I'm talking? Does anyone know what I'm talking? Rookie of the year. Rookie of the year. Rookie of the year. Okay. Yeah. No, I've never seen. this is it wow pancratts had that on deck dude um but yeah that that uh that was dan right there okay 1993 ready to hit the bell okay i probably should have uh i probably should have seen that one i'm i'm the right age for it 40 on rotten tomatoes so maybe not oh yikes i mean i pulled out air bud which probably isn't rated much better yeah but air bud is legendary i mean Rookie of the Year is legendary for me, but it might not be for other people.
2:37:00Dude, I don't know. There's some pretty good movies that are rated pretty bad. Yeah, Air Bud's a 50 % and a 40 % from the audience, so not so much. But this is going to blow your mind. The Boontock Saints is rated 26 % by critics. Whoa! I had no idea. Wait, by critics? Okay. Yeah. Who cares about them? No, seriously, though. But like... Wait, Dan, would that... I was going to say that would definitely go on the list. That would work for your thing. 100 % that is a movie to watch. How? And like, okay, listen, I haven't watched that movie since I was in my late teens, early 20s. So maybe, maybe stylistically, artistically, it's a crap movie.
2:37:44Maybe it has a bad plot or it's full of cliches and tropes or, you know, whatever. Maybe, maybe. but like I remember enjoying it a lot I thought it was cool it's been forever since I've seen it but I thought it was cool critics consensus a juvenile ugly movie that represents the worst tendencies of directors channeling Tarantino well I thought it was awesome yeah I thought it was pretty cool but again I haven't seen it since I was quite young who did direct this Troy Duffy what else have you directed okay not much the sequel to the boondock saints which nobody liked and whatever the heck guest house is a zero percenter wow this guy looks like he just watched guest house yeah really I don't know if I've ever seen a zero yeah that one that I was almost in but got cut out of was a zero for a while that makes sense I think it's one percent now oh it's up to four percent probably uh yeah it only takes two people to give it a positive reviews came in yeah the plot is ludicrous it's a true desktop disaster i hope that person knew what they were doing i hope so too they didn't spell it right though oh maybe they didn't then luna all right um what else we got for today apple fined 116 million dollars over app actually no let's let's go to this one because people keep posting about it where is it we don't have notes for this um corsair cancels orders and increases prices this was mentioned in the pre-show just from some people in chat this is not a prepared topic but we have a link over to I guess our subreddit that is talking about Corsair's subreddit and some of what's going on again because this is not a prepared topic we don't have a lot of notes for this but apparently theoretically what's happening is Corsair is canceling orders and yeah then hiking prices I think I read no yeah in this one if I scroll down here and this is still on the linus detective subreddit so i haven't actually gone to corsair subreddit yet but this person shared this photo um yeah i had my ram order canceled by them to be fair it was definitely pricing error on their part 48 gigabytes of ddr5 for 200 bucks but still very disappointing the prices for the same round is now double now and you can see this screenshot that basically says it was a system error so they canceled it on you and they tried to offer a gesture of goodwill 15 % off your next order.
2:40:29Um, okay. People are saying in, in chat, I read this earlier that in some areas of the world, uh, maybe not where this is happening. Maybe this is only happening in the States. I don't know. But in some areas in the world, um, this is, uh, illegal apparently. Uh, but I don't know if it's illegal where they're doing it. I don't know where they're doing it. Again, this is a fairly unprepared topic, but pretty crazy, especially while tensions are rather high over RAM. And most of the posts that I'm seeing about this is RAM stuff. Yeah.
2:41:15Okay. Yeah, I don't know. There's a lot of these posts. There's actually quite a few of them. It's going through the Corsair subreddit.
2:41:30Okay. But I don't necessarily have a ton to say about it. Yeah, I don't know. If it's actually a pricing error, then it is what it is, and it's actually kind of nice of them to offer a 15 % discount. If it's not a pricing error, and it's just pricing going up, and them not accounting for it and updating things quickly enough. That is a pricing error of sorts, but it's not a pricing error, like a data input error in the way that we would typically think of a pricing error. And the fact that this is happening on complete systems kind of leads me to believe that it could be the latter, in which case it's not very cool.
2:42:11Either way, it's going to... Again, not a prepared topic. We don't really know what's going on. Yeah, it's going to be down to sort of following this up with your local consumer protection bureau, assuming that you have one. And otherwise, or just ordering RAM from another company. Apparently, they've cranked up the discount. Here's an updated message that I found on a thread. Oh. We are not on a thread. This is a post itself. Sorry, I don't read it enough. Truly understandable. 40 % off a single DRAM product of your choice. Okay. Was the other one for a full system, though? because I could see 10 % off a full system being...
2:42:45I'm not sure, but what I do see here at the bottom says the original 15 % coupon remains valid for other components on our web store. Got it. So that was probably for a system. Oh, okay. Interesting. This sounds more like DRAM to me. So what this tells me then is Corsair has some stock, probably of DRAM that they are, that is at old contract pricing and they're able to use some of the margin that they have on their DRAM that they have at the old pricing as pricing is going up to offer a discount. And I mean, that's something at least. Yeah. All right. Again, don't know all the details, blah, blah, blah.
2:43:19Insert various caveats. Oh, speaking of the LTT subreddit, before anyone notices it and goes, sorry, what? Oh, shoot. I can't see a list of moderators without being logged in, but I am officially a moderator on the subreddit now. This is not because our plan is to, you know, be meanies and censor people um but can i make a new account and you flag me as me then yeah i can do that because i can't recover my old reddit account oh okay unless someone watching like knows people at reddit and can help me oh i mean that's probably true too that would be awesome because i can't recover my old reddit account cool it seems like when we migrated from last pass to keeper maybe that password didn't come along and i never attached it to an email because you at least used to be able to do that on Reddit.
2:44:10So there seems to be no way for me to recover the account. I can log into it. I just have to boot up my old computer, which still has an active session for whatever reason. It's been like, you know, I'm pretty sure the time gap in which I tried it was like over six months. And then it just, it worked, no problem. But even being logged into the account, I can't do anything to recover it or set a new password. So I have been locked out. Cool. so yeah the goal is not to you know be mean or anything like that but i'm also not going to claim that if i see someone who's a complete bad faith dumb dumb that they will continue to have posting privileges so make of that what you will um so for instance there's a thread about the new true spec cables and um you know these are going to be the new monster cable and they're going to be have absurd pricing and you can just i don't know post on other subreddits i guess because you don't actually have evidence for the claim that you're making um i think if the community counters that person significantly enough it might even be good to leave it up um why uh so that people can see that an argument for that was made and immediately discounted but i mean that's all your call yeah all right duly noted it's just an just an idea i think there will be cases where that makes sense and there will be plenty of cases where that does not make sense yeah i don't know i think uh i think buddy here who says i've always wanted to buy expensive overpriced USB cables, but didn't feel like going to Best Buy.
2:45:57I think they can just take a vacation though. Like, do they, why? Why do they need to be here? I mean, the hate watchers need somewhere to post, but they could post somewhere else. There are other places. There are other places where people can post. That is an option. It's a hundred percent an option. I'll think about it. So far, I have not, I have not banned anyone, but I I don't know. That's not necessarily a guarantee is all I'm saying.
2:46:24And to be clear, this is not down to... So people in chat are saying dissenting opinions are okay. So here's the problem. This is not a product that they have seen. It's not a product that they know anything about. If we reviewed things sight unseen, you'd be pissed. Yeah, you'd hate it. You'd say that we've completely lost all credibility and any right to offer up an opinion on things if we just said stuff completely without any precedent for it or any evidence. It's just completely bad faith engagement and there's really no need for it. Now, if someone wants to review the cables. That's totally different.
2:47:01Go for it. That's totally different. We've even highlighted reviews of our products that contain negative sentiments here on the WAN Show. Yeah. We're open to that. But if you're just trashing on something that you don't know anything about, you don't know the pricing, you don't know the quality, and you're just saying it's bad, you have outed yourself. You've outed yourself as a non-credible, non-serious person. No, that's not the same thing, guys. You don't get to have an opinion about something that you don't actually know literally anything about. Demonstrably, you don't know anything about.
2:47:42it just kind of doesn't really work like that
2:47:52unique username asks will you delete comments that assume the product is great without them having seen it or having evidenced otherwise i don't think i saw any sorry say that again i wasn't listening will you also delete someone who assumes that the product is great without them having seen it or having it be evidenced otherwise i will say that i banned someone on the youtube channel who was who was spamming um an inaccurate defense of some scandal that we had so they they were like raw raw super pro ltt also not helpful about something and there was misinformation in their defense so i shadow banned them um so no i'm not interested in people white knighting inaccurately um however
2:48:50that one requires a think that one definitely requires a think uh kinjara says you get to have an opinion on anything it's an opinion yeah but it's also not a it's not a government public forum yeah you can go have that opinion anywhere you can do it somewhere else i don't i don't personally like i think there are so i used to be really rah-rah about um moderation standards on on in certain ways and blah blah blah but i think the internet is so huge now you and i were like militantly nothing should be deleted yeah for a very long time the the only like primary rule on the forum was that you can attack us too but no personal attacks against other people um and like that's even that's like really really open but now there's just there's just it's so easy to mass generate accounts it's so easy to ai spam with things um there's so much like group think hatred for everything you could possibly ever imagine i'm not even just talking about us um at all to be clear um and it's so easy to hijack a community with surprisingly little effort to just make it a terrible place and it's so common now that i just i just don't really care anymore um there are 10 million other places on the internet more than that that you can go it's not like we're like taking your house from you like it's literally reddit there's probably more subreddits than that oh there are also other subreddits that will talk about us and our stuff binky draws says i'm a moderator on a medium-sized discord server and there's a huge problem with bot accounts yeah like it's it's uh it's actually unreasonable to do in my opinion what would be considered as like old style of moderation anymore um yeah and there's a big difference between saying that you feel that the cables might be overpriced and low quality versus saying definitively that it is.
2:51:03Yeah, sure. Huge difference.
2:51:10All right, what else we got going on here? Oh, NVIDIA and AMD, rumored to be preparing GPU price hikes in Q1 of 2026, and adding some weight to this, An Asus letter has allegedly leaked announcing price hikes starting January 5th, which means that it could be our, um, it could be our last positive. How much is the Intel arc B580 investigation? Check. Is the B580 still MSR? Oh God, what is this? Oh. Oh no.
2:51:57are you kidding me wait wait wait oh out of stock oh is that what i was talking to you no yeah i'm down into i'm down into all the out of stock stuff no was last week the last one dan don't tell people to panic why would you tell people to panic it's all going wrong why would you why would you why would you spread panic literally literally spreading panic burn down your village okay hold on hold on wait wait wait wait wait wait oh that's an open box that's an open box wait but hold on is this a is this a shift in usd cad no it's more of a gap than that this is us what is their msr oh no this yeah i'm on the us site dude so what is it supposed to be again 249 for the b580 and the lowest one is 299 It hit The holiday bundle is still there But it's over B580 at MSRP party Is over Oh boy No
2:53:10No
2:53:15Oh that is such a downer Sell sell sell dump it Dan stop it you are not you are the definition of not helping
2:53:32jeez all right what about canada okay b580 can computers are you gonna let me down here okay online sold out online available for 400 that's way over 250 no no No, it's 300 US now. Oh, this is probably not the end of it either. All right. 359 from Newegg. Reports out of Korea say, no, there was one for 299. Reports out of Korea say that in video... No, CAD. Sorry, what? CAD. Oh, where? On Newegg? Yeah. Is it in stock? I don't see a thing that says stock, to be honest. Yeah, add to cart. I think you're good. Boom. okay so you can still get them at newegg canada for about 249 us actually it's a touch higher but it's a little bit higher it's not too bad it's often how that goes all right do i get to finish the sentence now yes i'm having a very luke experience reports out of korea i have to do it again that nvidia and amd are planning to jack up gpu prices throughout the show in early 2026 and the top-end GeForce RTX 5090 could end up around$5 ,000, which is more than double what it first launched for.
2:54:55Memory costs and broader GPU supply issues are squeezing component prices and makers are said to be shifting more of their production towards AI and data centers, which will boost prices across the board. The hikes are expected to happen in steps throughout Q1 2026, affecting not only flagship cards, but a range of consumer GPUs. Meanwhile, ASUS sent partners a notice that starting January 5th of 2026, it will raise prices on some of its products right before CES gets going. Roughly translated, ASUS's letter doesn't list exact models, it just says they're doing strategic price adjustments on certain product combinations.
2:55:39Discussion question. in your time as a tech enthusiast can you remember a worse start to the new year for the tech industry price hikes and shortages seems like a pretty bad way to kick off 20 26 um I don't know it's this is a tough one because on the one hand there's a lot of bad news this is all bad news WAN show has kind of become bad news show but and this is part of remember that that conversation we had over the kind of the last couple of weeks about sort of the bright side bright side of tech and gaming um this is one of the things that made its way into the full ltt video on this okay you can go to pc part picker right now and you can select magnificent amd gaming and streaming build and this thing really is magnificent it has a 9800 x 3d the fastest gaming processor known to mankind it has a sick thermal right giant dual tower cooler it has a b580 pro a motherboard or whatever you could get some other motherboard if you really want actually apparently this one's out of stock uh let's see uh everything else is either uh-oh hold on we might be in trouble okay when i looked earlier this week this particular gpu was in stock.
2:57:06No. At time of filming. At time of filming. Hold on. Let's try and find another one. I'm going to find one. I'm going to find one. Just a sec. Just a second. I'm going to recover this. There's two different magnificent builds. Hold on. Hold on. There's an Intel and an AMD. Oh, shit. What am I doing? Getting distracted. RTX 5080. Okay. Here we go. Here we go. Okay. So for $11.99. Okay. So that's a little more. That's a little more. It is $16 more. Okay, so that's fine. My point stands. So you just got to go find a motherboard, which is fine. Okay, so we'll pay at most maybe another like$30,$40.
2:57:44Okay, everything else here is in stock. Cool. Okay, so this is a sick system. 32 gigs of DDR5-6000 CL30 memory. It's a nice little memory kit. 2 terabytes. This is a Samsung 980 Pro. It's a nice SSD. Okay, RTX 5080, a rgb quick case from corsair you could save a few bucks by not going corsair uh thousand watt 80 plus gold modular power supply this is a sick build for let's call it 2650 us dollars if we're looking at the guides page of pc part bigger which one's maybe top two do you think people are actually building hold on hold on that's not quite the point okay i think it matters but all right the point is that we did a 4k gaming system build guide 11 years ago putting together a top spec gaming machine was four thousand dollars at that time the 4k build was 4k i actually remember joking about that at the time so is it bad well yeah it's definitely bad that this RAM is more expensive than it was.
2:58:59It's definitely bad that GPU prices are going up. But, gaming and tech have still kind of been there for us in a pretty big way. The fact that I can buy an absolute monster of a machine for$2 ,500 compared to the way that everything else in our lives is going up, it's pretty cool
2:59:31it could be better yeah i'd love it if it was better yeah i also think like the the disproportional hit is not on people buying the magnificent build and that's true and that's true it's rough yeah it was like even if you're going for the great and like i i did scroll down here i noticed there's the entry and modest are like way below the fold hold on have a have a click on the entry level one though because like i remember building an entry level system for myself back in the sort of mid to late 2000s and it didn't even have a dedicated gpu i'm willing to bet this has a dedicated GPU. Yeah, B580.
3:00:08Yeah. It's showing an MSRP B580. Oh yeah, there you go. B &H apparently has stock. What? Out of stock? In stock, in stock. Oh, okay. That didn't look green. It looked gray. It looked like a gray circle with a slash through it from here. I think it is gray. It's just a check mark. Okay, that's really stupid. A little odd. B &H, you should probably use the color green for that. Just convention. That's my opinion, which I'm entitled to have. Yeah. You know, you could get banned. I could. They're allowed to ban me from their site. They are allowed to ban me. They're actually allowed to do that. Yeah.
3:00:48The 32 gigs of RAM for 179 is surprising. So, yes. You know, it could be better. but I also do feel like some of this is people just kind of piling on to an issue and rage baiting and I don't think it's rage baiting I think I think you're uh you don't think people posting like a two thousand dollar ram kit is rage baiting a little bit nobody was buying that anyway maybe a little bit even if it was a thousand dollars I'm sure there's some of that this does still definitely suck for people though it does especially on the lower end where like a because I if I remember correctly the magnificent build that RAM cost was a bit was like a little bit more than 10 percent yeah yeah it was on some of these entry ones I'm assuming this is like a really significant punch like when we're looking at great AMD gaming build yeah I haven't even clicked at this one yet let's see yeah like the RAM being$314 on a system that is where is it uh 1387 yep is going to push past people's limits to the point where they might have to step down um hold on can you go back to that one though sure but let's again let's look at the bigger picture here so this is a really nice six core processor legit uh what kind of gpu do we have in here we have a 50 we have a 50 60 ti a game stop ssd okay no this build sucks what is a GameStop.
3:02:22I didn't know GameStop had... I might just generally have kind of issues with this build, though, because what on earth are you doing using... What is this? Oh, this is a thing. Yeah, this is a thing. That's wild. Sorry, I had no idea. At this budget, you should be using a stock cooler, though. You should not be using an X chip, which just saved you probably about$40. What else do we have here? Oh, that 5060 Ti is not the choice. So you should just be using an arc b580 which just saved you another hundred plus dollars no not a hundred plus oh yeah which just saved you like another 150 also if i'm spending 70 on a case i'm sure as heck not getting a montec and i do not need a 750 watt power supply that's a crappy build this is where i think in this price range you're going to benefit from at least doing a at the very least a bit of a hybrid approach try to get your case used or something i would for sure get one on facebook marketplace yeah this is this is not uh i haven't priced out a rig in a long time i'm not going to comment but yeah that's that's not a good that's not a well configured build um is it possible that it was at one point and then pricing changes made it worse that is possible but also it's just like got too big of a power supply which is great if you're trying to future proof but if you're targeting like around a thousand to eleven hundred dollars then you're in my opinion better off getting what you need um 750 watt yeah you'd want to spec down from that dude if i'm if i'm running an rtx 4060 like what does an rtx 4060 even use like 200 watts or something 5060 ti I'm not sure.
3:04:11Sorry, what was it? 5060 Ti. Okay, let me check what a 5060 Ti is because I don't think it uses a ton of power. Yeah, it's a 180-watt card. I just found it. And then you have a 95-watt CPU. What are you doing buying a 750-watt power supply for this thing? I don't know how much money you're going to save going down to 650 or 550 or something. It adds up, though. Yeah. Because you could save$20 on your case. You could save about$40 on your CPU and cooler. You can save, what, another$15,$20 on your power supply. You could save$100,$150 on your GPU. Okay, now we're talking about an appreciable difference in how much you're paying for this computer.
3:04:56This is what I spent years of my life doing on the NCIX forums, is saving$3 on this and$10 on that and 15 bucks on this and four dollars on that and all of a sudden you saved some more fans you saved a hundred dollars on your system that's a free copy of windows back when people bought that what no one ever did uh oh yeah that's a lie dude do you have any idea how many system invoices i have looked at in my life people buy windows this is going to be mind-blowing for for many many members of our audience many members of our audience people definitely definitely buy windows yeah i'm just scrolling through some of the power supplies you're not going to save a ton but you might save 10 bucks yeah which is hey 10 bucks is 10 bucks especially if you don't need modular like oh wait hold on was that one modular uh okay the one in the build yeah well i mean it's like 10 trillion different ones i think yeah it's modular so that's part of the filters you do not need a modular power supply in a thousand dollar build that's that's silly you should not be doing that so people are just they're making unwise decisions in the configuration and knowing how long a lot of the power supplies i've had have lasted i might want to get a a bit higher wattage modular one knowing that i can carry it into my next build sure but then you're going to be making compromises that I personally would consider to be unacceptable at that budget.
3:06:27At that budget, I'm - $10 more on a power supply? If I think I can carry it into my next build? It all adds up. I mean, but that's how you end up spending a little more on every component. Because I can make the same justification across the board. You don't need 32 gigs of RAM today.
3:06:45Yeah, I don't know if that's valid. You like it. i don't know if saying you can do that for every component is valid though there are power supplies that have lasted a what yacht minute no no no that's not what i'm saying i'm saying that that that rationale that that well this could last a little longer if i get a better one you could say the same thing for the case for sure yeah like i'll get a slightly better case i think the case and then you could say the better thing you could say the better same thing for your cpu cooler i'll get a better cpu cooler and i'll carry it forward with me to the next build especially if you can get new mounting brackets or or make your own and so my point is and now all of a sudden you're you're kind of buying a different class of machine and when i'm configuring disagree when i'm configuring a thousand dollar build i'm focused on performance i don't think i'm getting to a different class machine by spending 10 more dollars on my power supply but you are you're using a different rationale for how you're choosing your components sure i am choosing my components at that price point based on what this gets me today.
3:07:43If I can get some degree of future proofness out of it, then that's great. But I don't think that a 650 or even a 550 watt power supply is going to meaningfully impact my upgrade path. Because at the end of the day, if I'm someone that's shopping for a 5060 Ti today, I am not someone that's shopping for a 7080 in a couple of years. That's a completely different class of product and if i am that might be totally legit depending on life stage and but if i am and my life stage has changed that much you might also get a higher quality power supply that's it would take some research but sure but if you're looking at you know 10 or 20 cheaper you're still getting a quality unit you're just getting one that's rated a little lower and the same way that if my life stage has changed such that i go from shopping for an arc b580 to shopping for a 7080 or something like that i'm all of a sudden i can afford a 1500 gpu my life stage has probably changed to the point where i could offload my old system and i could buy a new power supply like that's the thing working at the computer store man i thought everybody upgrades their computers people don't upgrade their computers i do though i know you do which is why your perspective is very interesting but as someone who worked at the store yeah but we're talking to people in the community that might actually upgrade their stuff of course there are some ancient power supplies that are not well priced on facebook marketplace this is rough well look at how old this xfx power supply is i mean it's also 60 bucks it's also 40 about 45 us dollars i mean i'd trust that in my system it is old yeah that 80 plus gold or bronze oh that's one of their weaker ones um xfx's power supplies from that era were quality though and i believe this is this is the all wattage available on the 12 volt rail era you can you can double check that by just zooming in really close yeah 744 of the 755 watts is on the 12 volt rail um i would probably check real quick and just make sure that it doesn't have like a virtual multi-rail thing that's going to cause ocp to trip but i believe this is post that as well so i would i would probably trust that xfx it's not going to be the most efficient thing in the world but it should be reliable it's just so old yeah but like so like three minutes ago you were like well power supply part of the justification for spending more is i can use it a long time buying one without a significant discount that is already ancient how is it not a significant discount what's a 750 watt power supply today i don't know in canada well i mean we can it doesn't feel like a significant if only i mean we we can't just go on vibes and feelings right but i'm acknowledging that because we're having a discussion about something that i don't have up-to-date numbers on this is very reasonable okay okay it is a very significant discount okay yeah i'd be interested to see from like lucas or something like grabbing a bunch of old power supplies like that i oh you know what i wanted to do years ago do you remember the video that we did where we got a brand new evga 580 gtx and we compared it against one that had been used for like 10 years to find out if like because people people imagine that their their silicon devices go slower over time and we basically had been trying to debunk that for a long time like i'm a vague memory of this i do have some memory if it runs at megahertz x then it is running at megahertz x like modern silicon that you know has uh that can that that dynamically uh changes its clock speeds right that turbo boosts might turbo less aggressively over time or your thermal interface material might degrade right and that could impact performance but megahertz is mega hertz i don't make the rules it runs at the speed it runs at and if you are imagining that there is some kind of slowdown it is probably because your demands have increased or the software that you're using is um well i guess that's basically just another way of saying your demands have increased and um which is almost certainly happening which is almost certainly happening and you imagined it or or you imagined it those are those are basically the two options and you'd have people swearing up and down that running exactly the same software exactly the same way it gets slower over time so we we debunked it once and for all we took a brand new sealed in box that evga found for us and tested it against an old one that had been on the bench for years and also in someone's system for years and we ran them through the exact same suite and lo and behold they performed exactly the same because that's how it works did you tim replace the heavily used one i don't even think well we didn't because it didn't matter because there was no dynamic clock speed adjustments on the 580.
3:13:01So the point was, if it's running at clock speed X, then its performance will be X. It's that simple. And I had wanted to do the same thing for a power supply. I wanted to get my hands on a brand new old model power supply and compare it against one that had been deployed for 10 years or something like that in someone's, you know, server closet or something and i was just i was never able to get it together because everyone talks about how you should budget like 10 for capacitor aging but my understanding is that's actually super ancient outdated device outdated advice from like the electrolytic capacitor era yeah like solid state caps from my understanding of them may decay a little bit but not to nearly the same degree that those older power supplies did um but i just i haven't really i haven't pursued it recently but i when i like looked into it and wanted to do it i wasn't able to find anyone who was able to to get me an old one um and and an untouched oh mpoc nor 47 in float plane chat for crying out loud context matters they're saying i understand the point but megahertz is a terrible metric I had a Pentium 4 that ran at 3 gigahertz and my 5800X3 runs at 3.4 that's not what he's saying not what I was saying we're talking two of an identical product over time context matters not IPC improvements and stuff sheesh alright anywho um what topic are we even on oh okay no we were done that new one modders are slapping 32 gigs of uram on nvidia's rtx 5080s but spoiler that's not good news for gamers the modded variants are for ai workstations and servers cool i guess there's really not much to say about it other than that what tier of modders is doing this like is this could people do this at home oh heavens no yeah i didn't think so yeah i knew there was some like you know back in the langley house there was um some power mods you could do to cards that were like consumer level doable i think it was uh i think it was yeah this already yeah i think it was kingpin who uh cut the back end off of a gpu and like took the like the back end vrm of another gpu and just like soldered them together and ran it i might be remembering this incorrectly i don't know but i didn't even think he cut one off i thought he just like it came out in an angle he's probably done both if we're being realistic yeah what am i looking at here whatever i'm looking at um is not something that regular people will be doing no no so it's pretty sick though i love that their test platform just is a hunk of copper on the gpu so that it will run long enough for them to verify post it's just it is literally a heat sink that's awesome the gp was sinking heat into this copper slug with no actual active cooling on it whatsoever because it's not worth reassembling just to find out if it will post that is amazing i'm saying this to the public not to you but you ever seen the palm method i've used it yeah me too you just put your hand on the chip and you use human water cooling to keep it from frying itself while you just see if it works you gotta go relatively fast that'll get hot real fast um but oh man mcbain says linus has not been watching northridge fix okay i don't know if this was from northridge fix but i did see a motherboard repair that went viral recently that was mind-blowing like multi-layer pcb oh yeah yeah i saw something about that unreal unreal at that point you're just flexing i think by the way um do as we say not as we do putting your hand on the chip people in chat are all like yeah i've burned myself doing that lost a couple fingerprints yeah yeah yeah we're not recommending that that's a terrible terrible idea it's bad for your body it's bad for the the electronic device cool good chat uh Apple.
3:17:34Don't do it again.
3:17:38Apple has been fined$116 million over app privacy prompts. This is wild. Italy's antitrust authority has fined Apple 98.6 million euro, saying that one of the company's privacy features unfairly restricted competition in the app store. Hold on a second, though. regulators were focused on app tracking transparency apple's system that requires apps to ask users for permission before tracking them for targeted ads italy says apple forces third-party apps to ask for user consent twice creating extra friction that hurts developers and advertisers who rely on ad revenue what that sounds okay i'm with apple on this one yeah a hundred percent apple argues the ruling prioritizes ad tech companies over user privacy yeah uh yeah and says att uh app tracking transparency gives users clear control over tracking which is great applies equal uh equally to all developers which is great well hold on does it apply equally to apple no that's the one thing that's what i thought this was going to talk about and does it does it actually not apply to apple yeah i mean i don't use i don't know man the first time you log into an iphone it's pretty full of ads to use apple services like iCloud and stuff like that i don't know that that necessarily qualifies as a targeted ad but i would say that an iCloud subscription to someone who owns an iphone yeah i'd call that a targeted ad oh interesting anyway interesting line carry on not saying i disagree but interesting line i don't think it's quite the same no i understand what you're saying it also isn't not a targeted totally yeah if they know i'm out of storage for my photos and they give me the second it becomes storage based it feels like it's a little bit more so i'd still it's still like they are still technically different things And they sure as hell aren't offering me a cloud storage option from anyone else.
3:19:50Yeah. Does Apple do anti-competitive things? Uh-huh. Yeah. Yeah. OneDrive for your iPhone. But is app tracking transparency requiring apps to ask users for permission before tracking them? One of them? Eh. Yeah, that one. I'm more with Apple on. And someone asks, is this analogous to OneDrive in Microsoft? Absolutely. Yeah. And it's just as f***ing ridiculous. See, that's the whole thing, right? Is I often get told I'm hating on Apple, but I hate it exactly the same if Microsoft does it. So maybe, possibly, what I hate is the behavior and the attitude. And there's a lot of that on Microsoft. Oh, buh.
3:20:36The decision follows a similar ruling in France earlier this year where Apple was fined 150 million euros over the same feature. I like this feature though. Yeah. I really don't care about anything that Apple does that is a big middle finger to the targeted ad industry. Man, I think this comparison makes sense. Back when Telus was cool, they would call you when your contract was about up and be like, look, we can go kind of two different paths here. We can get you more performance for the same price or same performance for less price. Choose your path. And it was always like, what a great phone call to receive and then they stopped doing that because they're dumb um i don't have a i i got an email from them like talking about a few things because i called them out for a practice that i was going to like actually go after them for and then they fixed it so things are good um but i also called that out because i was like this was such an amazing phone call i would get a call every like two years it would be from telus i would see telus on the caller id and be excited because i was like nice i'm either getting faster internet or less money being taken away there's a great call every time blah blah blah their argument was that like people hated the calls i'm like there is no way that people hated those calls more than their bill going up without them knowing that it's happening or their neighbor getting a better deal than they are just because they didn't know yeah so like there's actually that's just a bs excuse and they could have also done it as an email if people don't like the calls definitely figured out that this just like they could have applied it automatically cost you money yeah yeah there were many other there were many other paths to take so like don't tell me the the thing um tim 000x3 says the do not track button on iphone is the reason that i use iphone yeah there are apps that i desperately need on android but i can't justify it i could use a hardened version of android but the best one to do that with is for the pixel graphene os shout out and i don't want to give money to google tim i have an idea for you buy a secondhand pixel you can have a pixel you can run graphene os you can give google zero dollars just just an idea just a thought pretty good wgd 118 says linus do you have more knowledge about the targeted ad industry now that you're buying ads for ltd store for the backpack and screwdrivers i'll be honest with you i am not buying those ads yeah i don't know anything more about it other than you know what i know from like the news and you know yeah learning about it and stuff yeah Yeah.
3:23:07The other part of what I was going to say is whenever my phone mentions like, hey, we noticed that these apps have privacy features on them or whatever, and you don't use these apps very much. Do you want to remove their privacy features? That's such a like, thanks, bro. Such a bro notification. Thanks for sending me that. I wanted to see that. Thank you very much. Even if I'm like, no, those are fine. Very happy to receive that notification. Just like that telus call. There are certain things, this app tracking transparency. I want that pop-up. That's a great pop-up. Thanks for giving me that pop-up.
3:23:41Heck yeah. Anyways. Moving on. Is that it for topics? Yeah. It's after dark. You have a thing up here playing Expedition 33. Oh yeah. I'm really enjoying it. Yeah? Good? Yeah. I'm playing on the GPD Win 5 which is... Oh that's the big chonker one right? No. Oh. It's the reasonable sized one that Apple Vision Pro style has a tether to a battery that like you could put in your pocket. Except this is pretty funny. You just played in bed. I put it in my pocket when I was sitting at the kitchen table eating my bedtime cereal that I'm back on because I lost a bunch of weight. So what's the downside?
3:24:30I mean, that's not really how that works, but hey, whatever. well what am i gonna do gain back my weight like i'm still exercising so like whatever which honestly i was clearly calorie in calorie deficit so if i'm just gonna like consume some more calories and keep working out i was i was playing badminton with a former uh canadian olympian uh was this yesterday yeah yesterday uh she's she's super chill wrong one that would be impressive there we go yeah so uh she came by smash yeah she came by smash champs and was hanging with us and uh her think of the facilities her and her husband uh bobby milroy who is also um back in the day pretty pretty hardcore he was a little younger here um but Yeah, absolutely.
3:25:29Like, they're older than me and Yvonne, but they were pros. Right. And it's just... It shows. It's a completely different level. Like, they can just... They can hit the straight shot. And straight shot doesn't mean straight. It just means the highest probability shot from that position. Do you kind of get what I mean by that? Sure, yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, so they can hit the straight shot, and they can, like, keep a rally going with us. Or they can just, like... Do like a double pump or like a weird sort of like, you know, slice shot or whatever. And then just, we call it an ankle breaker. And they can just have you moving completely the wrong direction.
3:26:10And then like it goes the other way. And they can just like end the rally kind of anytime they want. Anyway, what was I talking about? Expedition 33 and then. Oh yeah, Expedition 33. So anyway, the point is, I've been exercising. I don't care. I'm going to eat my bedtime cereal. Deal with it. nice um however that's fine however it can lead to problems see i was sitting there playing expedition 33 with the battery in my pocket and i was actually done eating my cereal which is good because i had the bowl with just like a little bit of milk and and my spoon and i went to get up and grab something and i dragged i dragged the gpd win 5 off the table which hit the bowl which fortunately it didn't break went onto the floor like splashed milk everywhere and everything lived and it goes to show how changeable our habits can be because there was a time in my life when i was constantly attached to a discman when i would have been sure to gather up all my things before i got up from a table but i am no longer that man bluetooth headphones i was just gonna say have changed my habits i i've been uh you know working around the house things are getting extremely close to being done uh but i've been wearing some bluetooth headphones while i'll like maybe i'll sit and do something for a little bit and then go do something else whatever yeah and i'll do i'll do this to move the cable that isn't there and it like like i'll go to get up and i'll move the cable out of the way so that i'm not gonna like step on it or whatever.
3:27:51Muscle memory is such a drug, dude. And it's I just feel so weird every time I do it and I don't contact anything and I'm like oh, where's the cable? And I have to remember that I'm wearing Bluetooth headphones. I'm like, oh, this is so strange. That's hilarious. Oh, lordy. Ew, people are talking about pouring the milk first and then putting cereal in? It's so incorrect. It bothers me. Have you banned people on Flipplane Chat? Yeah, we should. That's a good moderation. That is literally a wrong opinion. Have you heard about this? True Nass ditching smart tests? Yvonne does it. Oh. She's a milk first then cereal person.
3:28:27So here's her justification. Hold on. She doesn't like soggy cereal and she doesn't like to wolf. Is she a rapid top upper? So she'll top it up. Yeah. However. I think that's acceptable. That is like one of the few times. If you're pouring milk into a bowl and you bring the cereal with you, she'll have the cereal at hand on the table. That's allowed. She gets a pass. Yep. I still don't like it. I still don't like it. I don't like it either, but she gets a pass. But in the same way, just like I don't like it, when the toilet paper roll goes under instead of over, I understand why. And cat owners will understand why.
3:29:18that's right yeah they go like this and it doesn't unravel yeah there can be good reasons to do bad things speaking of uh anything about that i don't we have no notes on this i don't think it's a topic but true nas is ditching smart tests do you have thoughts yeah oh wait i haven't talked about expedition 33 yet okay yeah we'll come back i like it and i especially like playing it on the whim five that thing is a monster it's strix halo oh okay yeah so this is like an over 2 000 us dollar handheld what a sick name with a with a freaking like umbilical cord on it like it's it's the least sensible like most out of touch device that i've probably used since the vision pro which conveniently also had the same tether problem not conveniently inconveniently Incompetently enough that I don't think they're making anymore Apparently they're cutting production back Which to me is a big surprise Because I wouldn't have thought They were making them at all at this point I would have thought they would have plenty of inventory From their first I think there are some professional use cases That are like pretty stoked on it But not very many Yeah, that's good Have you played Expedition 33?
3:30:35No Is your computer back up and running? It was and it is no longer Because now we're Solid uh my dad was putting baseboards in when i left the house today and they're being painted over the weekend and then things will be getting put back in place next week okay cool anyway not that you need me to endorse it given that it practically swept the game awards but i am enjoying the crap out of it and i am uh i'm doing something kind of different and and fun with it, I am playing it in French, which I am way, I need subtitles. Sure, but that's cool. But what I'm trying to do is I'm trying to understand the dialogue.
3:31:17Oh, that's pretty sick. And then I'm checking. And what's funny is the reason that I started doing it was completely not for that. It was not to practice my French comprehension. It was because I like playing JRP, RPGs, sorry. I like playing RPGs. Sorry. Well, I call it a JRPG. It's not developed by... Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. But I like playing RPGs not with English dialogue. Isn't it Japanese style, not Japanese developer? It is. But I don't know. There's a lot of Western influence in this one too. I wouldn't... Okay. There's a lot of Japanese influence, but yeah. No, I just... Yeah. FRPG. What it definitely is, is an RPG.
3:31:59Sure. Yeah. So let's go with that. Got it. And so I don't like English dialogue because I come from the RPG era where everything was text and there was no voice acting. And when they added voice acting, that actually really like slowed down my. That's such a Linus problem. My ability to play the game. And I find it a lot less just. If they're going to. If I'm going to skip through something. That totally makes sense. I actually find it way less distracting if the dialogue is in, so I'll usually set it to Japanese, because usually Japanese is an option. So, if I want to, so I played Final Fantasy Tactics like this, I get to enjoy the original Japanese intonation with my English comprehension, and I can skip it in the middle of a sentence.
3:32:52And it's not really going to affect you. And I'll never know the difference. So that was what I actually was setting out to do. I went to switch it to Japanese because I didn't know or care which other options there were because I was like, that's what I always do. I always just switch it to Japanese. And then the first option was actually French. And I was like, oh, yeah. That makes sense. Why don't I try that? And I'll see if it, like, bothers me because I have a little bit of comprehension of it. I'll see if it works the same way. And I find French, no offense to Japanese, no offense whatsoever.
3:33:23I find French to be a very beautiful language to just hear more so than Japanese. Sorry. Sorry. My personal opinion. You can ban me for it. Um, and I switched it over and I understood more than I thought I would. And I was like, okay, well, this is a fun little exercise. Why don't I, why don't I try to like pick up my French comprehension a little bit? It's really tough with like thickly accented characters and stuff. I can imagine. but with all of the playable characters so far um there's a lot of like vocab that i'm missing but it's yeah it's been good it's been fun i i think i've told you about this before but the first time we went to germany for like the sennheiser thing i think that was the first time i went to germany for work um it was really interesting because i had taken a little bit of german in high school i was definitely not fluent but i knew some stuff and i could have like extremely basic conversations and then it had been many years.
3:34:21So I had lost most of that and there's no, I don't know anywhere around here that I could converse with. So it was just loss for years. You could try to speak German to me. Sure, yeah. I can give you one of those. I can't anymore, which is part of the story. But the first time we went, it was very interesting because I could pick up on a lot. I could kind of understand the point of a conversation, even though I might not necessarily understand all the details. And I could maybe order things at certain like restaurants and stuff like that um ask for the receipt do basic transactional stuff one worst please yeah your best stuff like that yeah i could understand numbers things like that uh and then big gap in time i went there again i was going to say this year but i guess last year um but but like not that long ago last year and i had lost a bunch of it again makes sense makes sense but there was still definitely thing like he said V gates there there there are still definitely things where I can like pick up the general idea of what's happening and it's it's very like mentally stimulating German probably has a word for that like the idea slag in Vince yeah honestly I wouldn't be surprised okay apparently I will not be banned for enjoying French as long as I don't watch anime in French.
3:35:41Okay seems fair enough. That that does seem that does just like the Yvonne situation yeah I think that gets a pass that seems fair enough. That makes sense uh okay what did you want to talk about next? Uh the smart test TrueNAS they're ditching smart tests. Oh yeah I don't like it and this is this is they say they're not reliable. Yet another reason that I backed HexOS is that I just so TrueNAS's position is that you can just use a third-party tool for it and that's cool um but that's one of the reasons that true nas which is great and i'm so glad that it underpins hex os investment disclosure um but that's one of the reasons that for general consumers it's and even prosumers it's just not something that i can recommend with a straight face because unless you're you do this for fun or you know you already you have to do it at work anyway so you know how it all works it's just not practical to administer for the average enthusiast even and if you are one of the people out there who considers yourself an average enthusiast and you totally administer true nas and you love it then congratulations you're not an average enthusiast and that's fine you're you're like really into it and that's that's super cool and that's really great and here's a gold star for you um but most of even the ltt community is not going to want to dig through some of the arcane crap that um true nas forces you to jump through sometimes to do very very seemingly simple things which you know again like you said you might do it for fun that might be part of the entertainment absolutely it might also not be okay i think we're done topics dan yippie doopie
3:37:35nice nice what were people liking today? were they picking up the new shirt? let's have a look bit set, crash out t shirt and bit set, oh bit case oh nice, nice quality alright got some messages here for you guys nice, greeting wan.dll from the UK question for Linus about his hands on with the steam frame how well did the frame accommodate a large nose speaking of someone with a big old schnoz myself pretty good actually uh i definitely need to spend some more time with it i need to play longer sessions where i'm moving my head around like i want to i want to yeah you had no time yeah and i look i'm not i don't want to be a conspiracy theorist or whatever but i think valve did not want me to make as deep a video as they know that i will and that i did because true i mean yeah that wouldn't even necessarily be that unreasonable no but also then don't tell us everything this was completely within your control to like they didn't have to have a transparent version of it that we could like see into like you know like if you want to control the scope of the coverage there's a lot of other ways to do it i'd be so sick if they sold that one other than forcing me to other than forcing me to have like not enough time to do a good job anyway i not the point the point is that before i made a definitive statement on that i would really want to um play for longer sessions especially in games where i'm moving around quite a lot because sometimes it's not obvious immediately but little movements and jiggles can kind of they can wear away especially if they like really you know hit on the the hard parts right here uh or or here's an alternate answer my opinion is that it's which is not it's not well okay it could be more valid than anyone else's because i've actually tried it but i was trying to i was trying to demonstrate a point if you don't know then you should just say you don't know you shouldn't make definitive statements yeah wait i think i figured out a way to ban linus from where
3:40:12nice see i was imagining that he had some kind of like low color depth filter and i was going to be band or something oh i thought he was going to replace your side with a frame with you not sitting there oh that'd be pretty good which i still thought was happening when he slid in the no i don't have any plates i moved the camera today a mirror oh a new laptops too a mirror of luke's side would actually be pretty funny too can i even do that i bet i bet you could figure that out that'd be kind of i think you could be kind of hard to watch though i know uncomfortable i know how i could do that in obs you throwing shade on remix no i'm gonna have to ban you now i just have never used remix i don't know anything about it next up gearing up for the first plane trip 13 hours with our three-month-old because of a family emergency oh double oh i wonder if you had some memorable difficult things with the used to be newborns?
3:41:13Oh man, yeah, we did a trip to Asia to see Yvonne's family when my second was, I think one, or like one and change. And I wouldn't wish traveling with an infant or even a toddler, honestly, on anyone, not on long haul flights. Like if you're just doing a little one and you can just like zonk them out on the iPad for a couple of hours, that's probably fine. but as soon as you're getting over like four hours on the plane they get antsy they get cranky they don't they don't know how to sleep they don't let you sleep like it's just a recipe for misery man i uh i'm i'm sorry for whatever you're going through in your family emergency and i'm double sorry now that you are uh having to take a three-month-old traveling with you and i think that like i i had someone like profusely apologizing to me for their kid crying on a flight recently because they were like right in front of me i was like bro
3:42:21why do you think i brought these you're good i get it it's part of the experience you just have to you don't want to be here either i know you don't want to be here 10 times as much as i don't want you here so like you know if i don't want to deal with that it used to bother me a bunch and then eventually i just accepted we're all cattle in a tube dealing with our own problems and you just gotta you gotta just own the confines of your little seat area that you have make it the best experience you can given all the variables around you and get through to the other end it's really not that deep do they just like not want to pay the check bag fee or what for the child.
3:43:02Get out. All right, next up. Put them in a little crate. Yeah, put them with the cats or the parrots or whatever. All right, let's see. Is a natural monopoly in a high barrier of entry industry like a bad thing? In the case of ASML, it seems more of a reward for technological innovation which incentivizes innovation. so when luke and i say monopoly bad competition good our perspective is as consumer aligned representatives from the media does that kind of make sense and in general i think that we have benefited more in our lives from competition than from um successful companies monopolizing their industries um i would also say that even if that disproportionate or maybe even not even disproportionate even if that high reward could incentivize others to try to compete during that time of one ring ruling them all and others attempting but failing to compete is a bad time for consumers that just didn't need to exist if there was always competition the whole way through.
3:44:36So yes, I can see your argument that it is good to have a really big reward for really big investment and ingenuity and perseverance but from a consumer standpoint that is not the ideal situation we would rather have more than one competitor in any given space yeah that's it what was the what was the core question um can you not see the merit in a in a in a monopoly like asml because oh the huge reward for winning the entire market should incentivize others to chase that huge reward that's okay i think you already answered it i wasn't fully paying attention but i mean that's literally an argument for competition but anyways
3:45:40had a great white shark show up on a dive two weeks ago video is amazing are you all keeping up with your diving and what animals or locations are still on the bucket list i have not used it like practically at all i think the last time i went was diving with dennis on mexico work occasion whoa that was i was gonna say i'm pretty sure i'm more up to date than you i might be further asserted than you at this point i think i'm only open water okay yeah yeah i honestly don't know if i really care about that because even with open water you can do a wreck dive as long as your dive master is asserted to guide open water divers on a wreck dive you can do a deep dive even if the as long as they're asserted to take you on it like i don't i could be wrong about this do not take this as a quote i think there are still slightly different uh limitations i guess oh and actually now that i think about it when we did that we were taking our advanced open water so maybe that was the context of it we ivan and i like passed our advanced open water but we were like you didn't teach us anything oh we just went on a bunch we did it in mexico so we did our our open water here in vancouver and then we did our advanced open water in mexico and they just like took us on a bunch of advanced dives we were like we're supposed to know all this like underwater navigation stuff like you didn't show us any of this we just followed you around and they were like don't worry about that i'm like no i am worried about that i don't want a certificate that i didn't earn i was concerned about this but did my advanced open water in greece and uh it was actually awesome the dude was like pretty hardcore about like you're gonna do this right um when we were doing the knot tying stuff he had me do it uh blind oh that's cool because he was like you might get you might not have a mask on yeah yeah there might be a problem you might still have to tie that knot so you need to be able to do it with your eyes you might be on a night dive you might be really deep so there might be a variety of variables you need to be able to do with your eyes closed and he also made me do underwater nav um with no references other than kicks oh interesting i had to track so there was one like pair of yeezys
3:48:05basically i had to be able to get back we'd like swim up to a certain point and then i had to be able to go in like uh a square in basically any direction and end up back where i started and i wasn't allowed to have like a little navigation computer or whatever i had to do it all just with kicks um and it was not he purposely brought us to unclear water right and was there a current uh i think we did that at one point yeah um and he taught i don't remember the the deal behind it but he taught me how to like try to do that a little bit better and he was like you know it's not going to be perfect but if you're trying to get back to a boat you can kind of use this information to help you get back to a boat um which but yeah he was awesome actually yeah
3:48:53hi all you've taught a lot of people some have started their own businesses with confidence what do you try to do as a mentor and boss to help people grow what was your favorite teachable moment oh man this is a heavy question i mean i don't you might not be able to say I don't think that I'm a business mentor necessarily. I'm just, I'm fumbling my way through this. School of hard knocks. I didn't go to business school. I don't know, man. And a lot of the stuff that we do is not best practice.
3:49:34I mean, that's going to be true for every business. Sure, sure. I laugh, but that is true for every business. I just mean we do not like optimize a lot of the time. We need to do a bit more optimizing. We do need to do a bit more optimizing. We do need to be doing some optimization. I mean, look, I wrote, how does LMG spend money this week? And it definitely flagged. Was that revealing for you? Like, did you learn things in that process? 100%. it hardcore flagged for me things that are going to need to be optimized um actually uh here let me see there was um chewy put together some why can i never find people when i'm looking for them there it is yeah chewy put together some stuff like basically uh we've made a lot of decisions as we've been rapidly growing that like made sense in isolation.
3:50:32Yeah. But now that we're not. No longer do. Rapidly growing do not necessarily make sense anymore. We've accumulated a lot of process debt. We've accumulated a lot of sort of band-aid solutions that again made sense at the time, but probably don't make sense now. Lots of those. We something that I don't really talk about in detail in the how does LMG spend money because it's meant to be sort of a snapshot of a particular moment in time rather than a look at trends is that as we've expanded our payroll and we'll talk about this part in more detail in the in the video. But as we've looked at improving our compensation overall, we have scaled comp in a way that is not in line with our revenue scaling.
3:51:28And that's been going on for a fairly extended period of time now, like on the order of years. View counts have been getting better. You know, we've been, we're kind of, we're back to a more sustainable sort of overall viewership. But with that said, the YouTube game is getting more cutthroat. You can upload. It used to be that if you uploaded a banger video, you might get 2 million views on it. And if you uploaded a total downer video, you might get 1 million views. Now your banger video might hit 3 million, 4 million, but your downer video might get 400 ,000. So you don't have that same predictable floor.
3:52:09It's down in the basement now. And that's harder to sell to sponsors. that's harder to capitalize on for yourself. Like when we're promoting a big deal on LTT store.com or something like that. And the video that we have that goes up promoting it, like we can see the difference in performance when it's a half a million view video versus if it's like a two, three million view banger. Right. Um, this was a fun one. Capital expenditures. They get the most attention, right? Like when we buy a fire truck or we buy a big led wall or we buy like, uh, uh, The huge sound chamber or thermal chamber. Yeah, or a three-stage chiller from Thugger or whatever.
3:52:50Capital expenditures are under 1 % of our spend. Under 1%. That's a weird bucket to define, though. I guess almost everything's going to be a weird bucket to define. Well, yeah, it's how you define it. So we define a lot of what some companies might call CapEx would be, we have under sort of an umbrella that we call overhead. Okay. And so for us, we defined our capital expenditures as sort of outlier purchases, particularly for content or for product testing. So, you know, looking at it like those are all videos that performed well or series of videos that will perform well over time, right? and it's just it's a lot of little things that you only really notice when you write it down and when you like graph it and start to really look at it and go like okay now hold on a second like does this make sense for how much it contributes to the business does this make sense for how much it contributes to the business up or down in in any case so it's the kind of thing that when you're just yeah when you're when you're building the plane as you're flying it you don't really look at it that closely but we've had um a couple years now of lower production targets like i don't know if people have like noticed this but they have i think they just stopped commenting on it because it was so long we used to have like 100 ish people we are now up to like 120 people and um we used to do six ltt's a week plus wanshow plus two tech quickies plus three tech links plus two game links plus two to four short circuits plus um shoot there's one i'm missing i don't think channel super oh yeah no channel super fun did overlap with that schedule for a while, plus a channel super fun.
3:54:47Shoot, I'm sure I'm missing something. What am I missing? Oh yeah, plus Mac address, whenever that got uploaded. And our headcount has not appreciably changed in this time that we've been doing anywhere from, realistically, about three and a half LTTs a week is what we've been averaging. We completely hiatused TechQuickie, completely hiatused GameLinked, completely hiatused Mac address. Did I already say TechWiki? I think I already said TechWiki. Sure. And people... feel very like overworked and i don't think that they're necessarily just like lying about that so So that then leans back to what we were kind of previously talking about of like, what are we doing?
3:55:36Yeah. Process overhead. Where's, where's the loss? What are we spending our time on? This engine has a lot of energy waste in, in potentially variety of areas. So I think that's, um, I think that's something that we're going to be reflecting on heavily over the next little while. Yeah. anyway you guys can expect that video probably a little bit after ces i think elijah i saw him turning through the guidance for it um that's kind of that's kind of getting to be a bit of a like superpower of his like he did the guidance for the um the ram crisis video that we uploaded earlier this week and i thought he just uh him and uh who was who was the guidance makes sense in my brain um hold on i'm trying to remember i think it might have been kendrick i'm gonna to double check though because i don't want to give credit to the wrong people so this video really cool video special thanks to the ecc squad seriously though shout out the ecc squad you guys rock uh hold on here's the regular credits uh where's my editor yeah kendrick kendrick was the editor um so yeah between him and um and and andrew and kendrick i thought they just did a really good job of maintaining really cohesive visuals throughout it that made it really engaging.
3:56:59I thought they, yeah, just did an outstanding job. I technically, I don't know this because I am actually, you know, not the one who determines once and for all, if a video is good. Um, you guys get to decide that I haven't actually looked at the retention for it, but to me, it felt like a very pleasant, short watch relative to its runtime. And that's usually a pretty solid indicator. I've been doing this for a while and I usually have a decent sense, but I don't always get it right though. Right, yeah. Not even, not at all. Could not claim that. I could try to claim that, but then I'd be a big liar.
3:57:38Yeah, retention's really strong. It's like well above average. Nice. Yep. Yeah, so good job, guys. Hey, LLD, got the wife interested in the Tech House series. what ideas do you have for spouse approved slash hidden tech going to be following and upgrading along the way thanks for the amazing content i mean a big one is um i think we're going to be getting a lot better at wiring and cable management because i'm a big fan of eliminating batteries and wireless technology from my life and i'd like to find ways to do things as wired as possible while maintaining really strong spouse approval factor.
3:58:25So this is a bit of a derail, but part of my place will be kind of fresh plan is that I want to have some self-hosted IoT things going on and some other stuff happening for once. And one of the problems that I've ran into that, you know, I'm probably going to try to solve it before the tech house, I guess, but where our computers are going to be now, there's a Cat5e through the wall. that cable in the wall i'm still haven't done the testing because again i've been focused on other grander stuff but it could be yeah that too it could be um the the short cable going from router to patch instead of the cable through the wall but i think it's a cable through the wall uh that cable might be messed up the second a significant load happens my computer like it's blinking ethernet cable and I lose all networking.
3:59:17Hopefully it's just the termination. Hopefully. Hopefully, but I don't know. So I might have to figure out how to fish that cable. Nice, solid. Everything with this place just turns into like, oh, here's a new project that I've never had to try to figure out how to do before. And you're finally going to finish it and then you're going to go, you know what? Time to move. Maybe it's time to... Yeah. I've been rather aware of that. Yeah, no comment. That's your thing to figure out in terms of your timing. Yeah. But, yeah, cool. Good luck with that. Yeah, back to both ends, you can just pull a new.
3:59:59Yeah, I know. My problem is how it fishes through. Yeah, it depends on if it's like stapled to the studs and stuff too. so i don't know that um and it's it's very far from reasonable angles and stuff and seeing how this place was put together it'll either be just draped there and easy to do because no one cared to do it properly or it'll be like oh i don't know 17 staples in one spot for no apparent reason cool um so we'll see oh here's a quick one uh the pebble round two was apparently just announced that looks good yeah it looks actually pretty sick wow i get it though that's very funny all right all right all right all right all right that's pretty good all right that's all as a former kioxia employee i was amazed to see the fab tour you got surprising they let you see more than i could working there what's your take on how the audience liked it and what's next hopefully more is next i love doing that kind of thing and yeah i was i was very impressed and pleased with the amount of access that we were able to get uh it was a battle to get as much access as we did i can tell you that um we had a meeting with as many as i think it was like 20 people in the room and another 20 on the call um sort of talking through the plan for the next day after our first day of shooting and like to be to be clear i don't mean this in like a disrespectful way or like a an antagonistic way um these sorts of things are always kind of a battle um yeah because these are closely guarded corporate secrets that have never been talked about or seen before like like to your point you could work there and not see things that we saw and so i understand why they're a little cagey about us walking around in there with like people aren't allowed to bring their phone in and because they might snap a picture here and there and we're walking around with a full kit right um and it was incredible and i'd love to do more of it if there's other companies that you know want to want to chop through all the red tape that's involved in getting us that kind of access so that we can bring people along for the ride and help them really appreciate what it is that you guys are doing over there then we're we're super down i love it oh i haven't seen it yet but apparently veritasium did a really cool video this week on asml's um oh it was incredible this i've not seen it so good that's cool what does he like go there yeah oh that's exciting and they go into some really technical details and it's just awesome he's a phenomenal job uh last one i've got for you today hey luke heard that getting tips from wendell on building an llm server would there be a chance to follow along with your home lab journey i don't know maybe i i'm starting to question its feasibility based on gpu pricing uh i've got a couple you can borrow if you want yeah we'll see i definitely i so i've got a variety of goals um but yeah we'll we'll see how this stuff gets sorted out over time there's like um i've been preaching local lm for a long time so i really want to actually do it because i don't want to be like telling people that they should look into it and not look into it myself that seems lame i don't really know where you're coming where you're getting at with this you have a variety of what and that has to do with a local ai ai server what are you bringing goals goals goals goals i know i'm just playing you said goals okay um you only got one sinus leave me alone yeah really um sorry but yeah i've been having a bunch of fun watching yeah jeff gearling and wendell and other people's stuff i i've wanted to do home labby things for a long time um so this is going to be my my dive into that both on the networking and the server side of things i want to do in a lot of cases self-developed in some cases just self-hosted iot things i want to do some self-hosted services i want to have my own um home video distribution um instead of just borrowing others um i there's a lot of different goals here easy you'd be crazy not to buy it oh my god man
4:04:41oh no but uh i mean my family does like this holiday valheim server we've this is the second year in a row that we've done it um but it's like the the thing the solution that we've had is like kind of instable and lags a lot and there's issues with it so like if i could just host that myself yeah that would be sweet like there's just a lot of things where i'm like this is honestly very overdue um so i'm trying to start figuring it out but going from zero to the point that i want to be at is like a lot so i'm trying to research and learn things and figure out how i want to step into this realm old tom asks how often do you think of the roman empire these days for reasons that i don't really feel like i need to get into kind of a lot we'll see you again next week same bad time same bad channel bye
