Guests (as named in transcript)

The episode is hosted by WAN Show regulars Luke and Dan, with Riley also mentioned during DLSS 5 discussion. No external guest identities are provided in the transcript beyond these hosts.

Guest backgrounds (from transcript context): Luke and Dan are long-running tech/video hosts covering PC hardware and graphics tech; Riley is also a co-host/regular who participated in the post-unveiling DLSS 5 conversation. Their “background” in this episode is hands-on testing and commentary on NVIDIA DLSS 5, plus broader tech news analysis.

Key claims

  • A leaked nvngx-dlssnr.dll enabled DLSS 5 experimentation ahead of the fall release, spreading quickly across DLSS-capable games that provide required vector data.
  • DLSS 5 is “not perfect” and currently experimental; HDR may not work as expected.
  • In Cyberpunk 2077, DLSS 5 is described as the best “sales pitch” seen so far; it particularly improves NPC/secondary character detail.
  • In Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, DLSS 5 can distort character appearance (e.g., “hot topic” eyeliner/lip color on Cloud), raising “artist intent” concerns.
  • The provided sliders are “developer sliders,” not necessarily user-accessible in shipped games; the hosts debate whether such controls should be in a separate advanced menu.
  • Enabling DLSS 5 has a “big performance penalty,” likely requiring substantial GPU compute beyond tensor-only assumptions.

Notable examples

  • Cyberpunk 2077: improved NPC model detail; three DLSS 5 models selectable; sliders for neural rendering tone/color and enhancement behavior.
  • Final Fantasy VII Rebirth: Cloud’s facial makeup changes in close-ups; Tifa and Barrett look better in background.
  • Meta: 2-hour default daily limit, midnight–6am night mode blocks, school-year notification limits, and disabling extreme makeup/cosmetic surgery filters.
  • China: reported order to remove “Windows 10 China Government Edition” from state-linked systems; candidates include Kylin OS and UOS (Deepin/Debian lineage).
  • PlayStation: “one-week blackout” protest against ending physical game production; discussion of digital ownership and licensing language.

0:00Luke Lafreniere:Well, that was bound to happen. What's up everybody? And welcome to the WAN show. Happy Friday. We've got a great show lined up for you guys this week. Meta has agreed to heavy restrictions on teen users in a major settlement and it could have far-reaching effects even beyond Meta's own products. I forget what we went with for the title of today's video. So I'm going to go with China has joined Europe in scrapping windows in favor of Linux. I don't think they were paying for windows, but hey, still pretty big deal. What else we got going on this week?

0:47Linus Sebastian:Well, he took my primary topic, of course, but Chinese memory firm CXMT relied on leaked Samsung technology to skip years of R &D. Apparently. No, that makes a lot of sense. Also this guy. No, not China

1:05They wouldn't

1:07Linus Sebastian:Now this is his application to the worldwide version of Billy Billy

1:16Luke Lafreniere:I'm going to I'm going to I'm applying for an acting school that specializes in incredulity Incredulity. Oh, there you go. No!

1:24Linus Sebastian:Speaking of incredulity, this guy used the new DLSS. I did. I tried DLSS

1:32Luke Lafreniere:5 today. He's got thoughts about it. I'd like to talk about that. Yeah.

1:51Linus Sebastian:Oh my god, he made a couch.

2:01Luke Lafreniere:Why were there two Lukes? Oh, I got so confused. I forgot to say who the show is brought to you by. The show is brought to you by AMD, XSplit, Infinite Cables, and Delta Hub. Of course, alongside our rap partner, Dbrand, our laptop partner, Dell, And our chair partner, Razer. I'd actually like to take a moment to talk about these new Dell machines. They feel really nice. Dan, do you have the model of them? I do not. They only arrived on my desk yesterday. Okay. I don't even see any talking points for them or anything. No. And the logos are so subtle that if I didn't tell you that it was a Dell and catch the light just right, you wouldn't even know that it was.

2:47Luke Lafreniere:Weird product placement Dell, but definitely appreciate it. The keyboard and trackpad are quite nice. It was also super easy to set up. Normally I have such problems getting them to output a different resolution than what displays internally. Super easy. Also, the intro used actual Minecraft note blocks for the song. Did it? Cool. Wow, great job, Noki. That was truly incredible. And wow, Noki, did you help with this new WAN logo? No, I'm just kidding. This is much too terrible to have been Noki. This must have been you. Thanks, Luke. He made it last week. Why don't we jump?

3:20Linus Sebastian:It's been approved. It's XPS 14 something. It's really hard to read. It's on the bottom.

3:25Luke Lafreniere:Why don't we jump right into our first topic, which is, of course, the big leak. Within hours of NBA 2K27 shipping out early access copies, modders of the Renault DX community discovered a never-before-seen library called nvngx-dlssnr.dll, which unlocked access to DLSS 5 ahead of the fall release. Well, as you can imagine, pretty quickly, modders got DLSS 5 running on other games like Control, and within a day, it has spread like absolute wildfire and is now working on pretty much any game that has DLSS and supplies the vector data that is required for DLSS 5's implementation. it is not perfect and i tried it today it's not perfect it the library itself is experimental so don't expect features like hdr to be fully functional but what is available is sliders that allow you to play around with things like color and tone mapping of the neural rendering implementation as well as i forget what this slider was actually called but it almost is like the sharpness of the neural object recognition and sort of enhancement.

4:53Luke Lafreniere:It's not quite sharpness. Okay. Yeah, like it's not like a smoothing, sharpening filter. It's sort of, it's like, it's kind of hard to describe. So we did a video, there's screen cap. You'll see it once the embargo's up.

5:08Linus Sebastian:It's easier to understand at that point. Do we have, oh, once the embargo's up.

5:11Luke Lafreniere:Yeah, so the whole thing's a little complicated. So for publications that signed a DLSS 5 embargo agreement with NVIDIA, well, yes and no, because once something has already leaked outside of embargo, we're allowed to report on it because we're not the ones who broke the embargo. So NVIDIA is still going to give us an official demo, and we're bound by the embargo of that, but everything that just like was out there and we found on our own without anybody providing it to us from nvidia then there's no rules around that yeah because i was going to say that's that would be a little bit ridiculous so basically we're going to release our video at the embargo with all the information nvidia gave us and then also everything that we tried on our own so it's going to be a way more complete look at dlss 5 than we originally intended and originally were going to be enabled to do.

6:07Linus Sebastian:What stood out to you the most that was good and what stood out to you the most that was bad?

6:11Luke Lafreniere:The thing that stood out to me the most, period, was how good and how bad it could be. Okay. I think that based on what I looked at today in Cyberpunk 2077, so I'd like to make it very clear, this has nothing to do with any of the information NVIDIA provided to us. We downloaded a DLL. we copy pasted a DLL. We played around with some sliders. There's actually three different models to cycle between. In Cyberpunk, I saw the best sales pitch that I've seen yet for DLSS 5. And I think that it's something that even though actually it's a really great segment, you guys should go watch it. Luke, Riley, and I all sat down right after the initial DLSS 5 unveiling and just talked about, you know, what this means.

7:07Luke Lafreniere:We talked about artist intent. We talked about, I mean, I think that was really the main focus of the conversation. And what everyone was really focused on after the initial unveiling that NVIDIA did was main characters, understandably so, because these are the characters that we are intended to form a connection with over the course of the story that we're being told or the gameplay experience that we're having. But in Cyberpunk, it's a first-person game. I actually, it didn't even occur to me, I never even bothered to look at my own character model. Walking around on the street, the sort of like mostly baked NPC models are the ones that benefited, in my humble opinion, enormously from a little bit of like oh yeah they probably intended for that to be a cheekbone let's make sure there's a little bit more definition there oh and they probably intended for that chain to be shiny and not just gray let's let's just enhance a little bit and not specifically those details necessarily because this is still the first gen so this was like a

8:24Linus Sebastian:movie it's using that software to enhance the extras yeah so they can focus more on main characters is what that would actually be really interesting as like an option to have it not pay attention as much to the things that you know that the artist spent more time on yeah

8:43Luke Lafreniere:i don't know that that will necessarily be an option it doesn't appear that the current implementation is like that because it's more of like a neural filtering of everything that is on screen yeah at the moment but this is an interesting this is the most cringe i want to just punch myself in the face tech bro line ever but the dlss5 that i experienced today is the worst version of dlss5 that there will ever be and i see yeah i understand why you said all that i did and i meant it but i can see i can see the grains of of shiny in the in the sea of oh my god what did they do to cloud strife so there's there's some gold in this pyrite we fired up rebirth and admittedly we also had some mods on um to help with like lighting but um how do i how do i put this delicately dlss5 clearly thought he was a chick oh if that kind of makes sense like like like like uh which game was this right uh final fantasy 7 rebirth so it went and like like dramatically reddened his lips and he's got a little bit of eyeliner because he's a final fantasy character

10:06Linus Sebastian:of course but it went like hot topic eyeliner on him and so the cloud strife comment was not just like a random comment no heavens no yeah and and and the and the funny thing is that in the in

10:24Luke Lafreniere:the so we went into like photo mode in the game so that we could kind of line up the two systems like we had a side by side so you could see the original rendering and you know what chat's like is this an issue i mean hey it's 2026 baby well the thing that that could hurt is artistic

10:41Linus Sebastian:intention yes so as long as that's what square intended then not at all which i i don't think

10:49Luke Lafreniere:but they didn't go that dark with the eyeliner yeah and they didn't go that deep with the lipstick you know what i'm saying yeah and you know the funny thing is tifa and barrett looked pretty deece in the background where we really run into trouble is where we get in too close and and it's just too much but with that said you know these sliders that you could kind of fine-tune really did un too much it quite significantly however here's the issue those sliders are developer sliders not sliders that we as gamers are necessarily going to have access at least not now not going to have access to so as much as and and this is where you get into a really funky conversation right because i think that for the most part the community is pretty aligned that artist's intent should be the guiding star but if they have the control i mean if that's the case then should you not install a mod on your game uh i think it's the delivered package

11:56Linus Sebastian:should be artist intent if you install a mod that's you deciding to do something to it sure not a third party company i think that's where the problem lies i mean the mod is created by a third party right uh yeah but you're the one that chose to install it you did you did so so this is

12:12Luke Lafreniere:where this is where we run into a little bit of a little bit of complication right because i've installed mods that i think look better yeah and in the same way i might like to play around with a slider right to my to my tastes and i might enjoy that better the artist might choose full yassification. If they do that, if the artist's intent was to apply maximum AI slop filter, you see where I'm going with this now? Where are we at here? Because they can, and it can apparently be done scene by scene. So they can decide full yass, 70 % yass,

13:00Linus Sebastian:I assume that the community assumption, whether true or not, would be that that was forced upon them for them to take less time.

13:09Luke Lafreniere:It does not appear to necessarily...

13:11Linus Sebastian:I don't mean by NVIDIA.

13:12Luke Lafreniere:I mean by the managers of the artists. Here's the thing, though, guys. Not every artist is tasteful. And that's not to say that they don't have taste that is valid. It's to say that it doesn't necessarily match yours. And there are folks out there making games that are embracing AI. They're absolutely out there. so if your if your concern is that there will be games that will be like yassified because of this some of it will be from developers and artists being rushed some of it will be an active choice and the frustrating thing for me is that i don't necessarily get that slider it's kind of where i'm coming down to because you you want it is that what you're saying yeah i want it because to me artist intent matters to the extent that you know i want to at least have an option to experience it exactly as the artist intended like right to your point like the the delivered package should be the artist's intent but then beyond that if i want to apply a slop filter or i want to add a lighting mod or i want to do whatever to say minecraft for instance i wonder i'm trying to think like yeah is there is there something to the idea of of it being kind of like like would it would it

14:26Linus Sebastian:feel better for people if it was on a under a different menu like if it's under the video settings, does it feel weird? Because the video settings are like basically intended quality levels by the creator. That is how it has always historically been. Sorry, do you mean video or graphics? Sure, either one. Well, sometimes I know. That's why I'm asking. Yeah, okay. Because video now

14:47Luke Lafreniere:in a lot of games just means like resolution. Yeah. And sometimes scaling's over there, but sometimes scaling's under graphics because nobody can agree. It's very inconsistent, yeah, but yeah. Anywho. Yeah, carry on.

14:59Linus Sebastian:But either way, like, I think if it like shipped baked in with like a modifications menu and then you had these sliders i suspect people would be like more okay with that however what would happen is people

15:13Luke Lafreniere:wouldn't enable it and then nvidia couldn't get up on stage and talk about how no the 80 percent of gamers use dlss no the just the sliders oh just the sliders yeah dude i'd be so down for that

15:24Linus Sebastian:yeah because to me i think because you're you're saying it should basically feel the equivalent to mods but i think that when i launch a game and i don't have any mods in anything in the menus are intended options intended settings from the game developer but if i think about like baldur's gate baldur's gate has a button for mods yeah they're fully embracing mods like very enthusiastically fully embracing mods so if if i if i keep that line of thinking going yeah it's like okay well what if we just have it under a different menu that communicates the idea that you are now exiting an advanced

15:59Luke Lafreniere:experience advanced options submenu sure something like that yeah just

16:03Linus Sebastian:something to divide it away from

16:05Luke Lafreniere:intended experience settings to be clear I don't think we're getting any of the things that we want not at all yeah yeah

16:12Linus Sebastian:I don't think we're getting the sliders I don't think we're getting a separate menu this is all irrelevant

16:17Luke Lafreniere:but I just I I but I think it's an interesting conversation to have anyway because I do think that the the concept of an artist's intent is going to get muddier the second an artist includes an ai filter

Read the full transcript

16:32Linus Sebastian:as their intent here's part of the fun fact too is like i pretty much guarantee you ai assisted stuff is going to end up in the modding scene too oh 100 so it's and here's

16:43Luke Lafreniere:something that is you know gonna ruffle some feathers the second i saw those npcs look so enhanced by the AI filter I kind of went well what's up with those kebabs on the grill why don't they look more like real meat you might as well we've gone this far point of no return baby it seems like most of the optimizations that I saw were really focused on character models I didn't I didn't check out every demo, and it's worth noting that this is not final.

17:23Linus Sebastian:That could be super weird, to be honest. That could create a disparity between the graphics levels.

17:29Luke Lafreniere:It really depends. It depends on how you tune the sliders. And we do, for now, anyway. We've just got to kind of trust developers to tune the sliders in a way that is not going to create that sort of uncanny valley, but only for certain objects. Like, can you imagine playing like a Nintendo game? You're playing like a Mario tennis game or something like that. And your AI slopification filter turns it into like a photorealistic tennis ball. Like, it was one of the things that really knocked me out of...

18:03Linus Sebastian:Or like, you're playing Mario tennis and then Mario looks back at you all of a sudden. It's just like a human face. Yeah. It's like, what?

18:09Luke Lafreniere:Yeah, like, it's one of the things that knocked me out of my immersion for How to Train Your Dragon Hidden World. the third one is we because they wanted to retain the art style of the earlier films for the characters but they were walking around in these like hyper photorealistic environments and i just found it i found it kind of jarring it's like that weird that's a real tree and like hiccup

18:34Linus Sebastian:is standing next to it this is why this is why i would want the sliders under like a weird menu

18:39Luke Lafreniere:if they were if they were given to users right yeah i could definitely see that because you could easily end up with something that looks pretty crap and i could you know what from a from a game developer's intent standpoint i could see them not wanting to give us those sliders because i'm going to go on twitch i'm going to stream my gameplay it's going to look like absolute dog poo and people are going to see my game like that i'm going to be like no no no no i didn't mean for it to be that much or oh it look the the color looks all wrong because it was intended to run this and i haven't even touched on performance impact oh again this is you know nvidia did not officially enable this in anything other than nba 2k 27 okay which i have not even tried right because that's part of from my understanding the embargoed experience but she hurt oh she hurt big big hurt

19:35Linus Sebastian:like it takes a lot oh yeah okay

19:37Luke Lafreniere:yeah it's a it's a it's a big performance penalty for enabling it because there's no way you're just doing this on your tensor course right like you're you're gonna need gpu compute to handle this thing and it's it's running in real time across multiple i was gonna say many frames each second but i won't say that multiple frames each second i have a theory you know how were nvidia's um rolling out um what's their what's their current generation um like what's their what's their newest generation data center architecture

20:22Luke Lafreniere:ruben i can i can never keep track of all the stupid code names uh nvidia's newest data center architecture blah blah blah i think i think it's ruben yeah yeah ruben um yeah so like ruben well where the where the crap is desktop ruben nowhere we'll talk about it ces maybe next year maybe we might finally get 50 series super refreshes so what i kind of wonder is was this never intended for 50 series like does 50 series simply not have the neural processing to to actually do any of this um and i will never know i'll never know the answer to that

21:12Linus Sebastian:in all likelihood yeah um so this is a a building building of want growing desire made people want new cards i mean i if implemented in the best ways that i've seen it work i would want a new card to use it you know how last week we were talking about how intel uh was discussing but how there's kind of like two segments of customers now it feels like maybe nvidia is effectively doing the same thing dude i think nvidia is i think

21:44Luke Lafreniere:nvidia clued into that a decade before anyone else yeah yeah and they like even on their software

21:50Linus Sebastian:side now which i feel like they haven't really done before oh yeah yeah i mean absolutely like

21:56Luke Lafreniere:i fully agree with and i think they'll try to deliver like a a somewhat featured dlss5 experience on their you know 50 and 60 class gpus but it's just like we saw with 20 series yeah someone uh D3i Happy in the float plane chat pipes in with like 20 series with ray tracing, where the first generation products, especially like the mid-tier level entries, are just, they're never realistically going to run with the full performance and quality of this new feature that debuts on them. And it's always been like that. You look back at the first generation that supported tessellation. You look back at the first generation that supported even full-on DirectX feature sets.

22:44Luke Lafreniere:Like the first DirectX 9 GPU. By the time a good-looking DirectX 9 game existed to run on it was like... Yeah. Yeah, it was not really powerful enough to deliver a cutting-edge experience, and there was new hardware that would run it better. I feel like we should probably address this really, really early. This week is going to be an excellent one to send a checkout message because we finally launched it. By the way, it doesn't glow quite that green IRL. See, that's more like it when I move it out of the blacklight. Yeah, it's under a blacklight here. Yeah. There you go. But we finally launched our nuclear edition LTT ratcheting screwdriver.

23:28Luke Lafreniere:I don't know for... Did you just turn off the Lazy Susan? No. Yes, you did. Thanks, Dan. They're connected. It became an even lazier Susan. I don't know how long these are going to stay in stock for, so make sure you guys get one. We already sold like a couple thousand of them this morning. So, yeah. Oh, and you can send a checkout message. Why don't we just do that early? Sure. Okay. Do you want to fire up the site? Yep. All right, cool. I'm going to go to Luke's laptop. if you are not familiar the way to interact with the wan show is not to send a super chat not to send a twitch bit it is to send a checkout message we believe that if you're going to throw money at your screen you should get high quality merchandise in return like the brand new nuclear edition screwdriver or failing that um there's that sick shirt that we're launching alongside it the lan motherboard t-shirt what a name i cannot find cw announcement section here yes there we go uh oh that's that's all there was to say about them oh this is also uv reactive oh sick so now your shirt and your screwdriver can both glow under a black light because that is what you always wanted we know it oh it's behind that oh sick you don't don't want to write it look we can just see it right here right now yeah boys dude thanks dan man we should do a real after dark this week yeah we probably should like a proper after dark with the uv yeah with the black light yeah um anyway sorry if you want to send in a message to the wan show all you got to do is add one of these items to your cart fill in a checkout message boop boop boop boop there you go sick oh you can use your floatplane username now oh that's cool and then check out and then it'll go to producer dan who will pop up your message there if it's more of like a hi mom or we'll reply to it or we'll curate it for me and luke to respond to um do you want to go ahead and fire us a couple curated messages don't thank me that would have been conrad um i blame you hi lld so glad it's in green now perfect for building my gf her first pc nice she's been wanting to play with me how do you recommend getting her used to keyboard and mouse from controller man it's been so long but i'm trying to remember yvonne i don't think yvonne had ever really played a shooter game how did we get her used to it i got do you remember the do you remember that cute like like girl edition akari laser

26:20Luke Lafreniere:yeah hold on let me see if i can find this um so i started by getting her a cute mouse that it turned out she didn't care about at all so uh don't just assume that your girlfriend wants a like for chick's mouse so that's what not to do uh in terms of helping her actually get used to it i would say that the way that i got yvonne into pc gaming like keyboard mouse fps like pc gaming was making it a super social experience um this color way of logitech stuff however that looks pretty sick seems to go over quite well okay all right there you go so so um maybe like like a like a like a gift like something that she'll feel some you know i'm not telling need to be manipulative but something that she might feel a bit of social pressure to use that what giving someone a gift does put pressure on them to use it they asked how to convince her how to get how to get her to do it i'm just i'm trying to be helpful so yeah gifting her a mouse

27:25Linus Sebastian:if it's for like a birthday or something you might want to get them something that they yeah this

27:29Luke Lafreniere:should be outside of anniversaries birthdays valentine's days a random yes yes yes a random I'm fully acknowledging with the self-awareness that everyone knows I am gifting this to you so that you will use it with me. Yeah. And then creating opportunities to use it together. That's where I come back to like the social experience. So what really got Yvonne into gaming with me was playing TF2 with our friend group and Left 4 Dead with our friend group. So finding a game that she is motivated to play because then she'll be motivated to like learn and it does take time you have to be patient but i'd say that something that is more strategy based like giving her a role in the game that doesn't require like twitch aiming necessarily right away like yvonne loved playing medic she was an outstanding medic because she's got just good situational awareness she doesn't have to necessarily have perfect pinpoint accuracy aim uh and she's got good comms so like a plus so yeah finding a game that is a little more inclusive that way might also help anything else you can think of that makes a lot of sense the the game

28:39Linus Sebastian:selection can be really good there's i'm not gonna remember the name of it but there's some game that's uh been getting getting around lately which is in the like the friend slip friend slop kind of genre deadlock um no uh but it's you you play like some form of video um like one that i saw was the uh mustafar scene with obi-wan and anakin um and there's they take all the voice lines out and you have to voice act them oh that's fun how does that involve a mouse uh it's i'm that one maybe isn't the greatest option but uh there's like a variety of different games that can kind of get them into the idea of playing games i mean even mecha chameleon it's first

29:27Luke Lafreniere:person shooter controls but really what you're doing is like playing hide and seek you don't there's not a lot of pressure to like hit something with pinpoint accuracy um but that yeah or like a more cooperative building game like play some minecraft survival yeah or something like that like something where you can carry without it being like patronizing valheim yeah

29:49Linus Sebastian:valheim would be valheim would be a great option my family plays valheim yeah and that includes your mom yep and the people that are less interested in combat can focus on equally extremely important things yeah like the base because if you don't have good like food in that game you're basically useless so like you're the combat people can only be effective if the base people are doing a good job so like it's it actually matters a lot and then if they want to come out on expeditions with you and stuff they can but then if they get overwhelmed or whatever they can just go back and hang out in the base and then the last part is be okay with that

30:26Luke Lafreniere:if they never become a professional fps player then that's okay find games find experiences that work for both of you yeah okay there i think we actually uh i think i think we answered that one pretty okay yeah yeah if on delivering prescription uber charges is kind of hilarious yep hello definitely we definitely made jokes about that she was still in school at the time but she was in pharmacy school yeah hilarious i love it she had a lab coat irl that matched her lab coat ir game buy her a dub for christmas hello lld any suggestions on what good language to learn as my first and what some fundamentals I should focus on might be.

31:10Luke Lafreniere:Software development, I'm assuming? Rocking Linux. Oh, I thought they meant like, you know, squahili. Yeah. English might be a good first language. Yeah, I mean, it's okay. I feel like you can get really lazy if English is your first language. I feel like it's easy to just use English everywhere. If I was going to pick a first language, I think I actually wouldn't go with English. I'd go with whatever language gives me the sexiest accent in English. what do you think that is um newfoundland i'd say i'd say like it i like it yeah i i like it but i wouldn't describe it as sexy um yeah like i i to me the french accent is like very peak tier um love the love italian accent though um like any latin latin language i and i don't mean like Latin origin because that could just include English I mean like Latin American languages like I What about Australian?

32:09Luke Lafreniere:That's also English Like a different country though Yeah I mean the Australian accent is outstanding but if I was going to choose from just like a regional accent of English then I'd have to go Irish To me Irish is like peak English accent Sorry to any of the Irish viewers out there I didn't mean like an English accent Like that You're not English, you're Irish Just You know That's what the language is called Don't make the rules, they did And they did it in a very Imperial way Bad British Bad, bad, bad British

33:00um

33:01Luke Lafreniere:anywho it's a matter of perspective so I think he actually wants a real answer to the question and we went a little bit off the rails there

33:13Linus Sebastian:it's so vague first language I'm using Linux now is like um okay I would be interested in Prompt this. Yeah, assembly stick. I like that. Bash, if you are just wanting to mess. Hey, chat agreed with me at like the same time. I said that before chat did. Go away. Wag knucks. Don't tell them to go away.

33:37Luke Lafreniere:That's a Flowplane subscriber. Stay, please. They're paying to watch this. I mean, we're probably losing money on it because they watch streams. Watch VODs. Watch VODs. Not streams. Don't watch streams on Flowplane. Go to YouTube. Stream from YouTube. Or even Twitch. No, don't do that. No, no, no. I take it back. God, no.

33:54Linus Sebastian:We could use traffic on the YouTube stream. We're doing okay. No, I mean, Bash would be useful for you if you're wanting to mess around with Linux stuff. I don't know what you want to do. Learn C, turn on and off LEDs.

34:09Luke Lafreniere:Or Groovy on Grails.

34:10Linus Sebastian:C is unironically useful. Ruby on Rails is... No, Groovy on Grails. Groovy on Grails. Is that a thing? Did you not just make that up? It's a subtype. Is it? There's so many subtypes. Yeah, I haven't even heard of that. um Etzim said shut up Luke I said it minutes ago turn it I lose no you can't shut up

34:30Luke Lafreniere:my co-host you guys gotta stop giving each other instructions that would be seriously detrimental to the ongoing nope Dan no you can't do that that would be detrimental to the ongoing health of the land show I muted him as well he's unmuted yeah you gave me that button damn it I can make him say something. I'll just do something outrageous You already insulted the English

35:07Linus Sebastian:He's gonna either pour it on his head, pour it on my head, or like spit it at me, and I wasn't sure which one The anticipation is what made it so effective

35:18Luke Lafreniere:Whatever it was it was gonna be too much Now I'm so wet, though. Oh, my. It's not after dark yet. All right. We should probably do some more topics. Should we start with the big one this week? Yeah. Meta has chosen to settle the multi-state teen addiction and safety lawsuit for$17.1 billion. and by settling has agreed to introduce huge changes to how teens use instagram and facebook meta has also had to change oh okay yes um changes to the teen experience are as follows a two-hour default daily limit across facebook and instagram parents are the only ones who can lift this limit and there's a conditional further change if other social media platforms agree to similar terms the daily time limit could drop to just one hour which i actually think is closer to probably where we should be.

36:19Luke Lafreniere:Basically, they're saying they'll go lower if other platforms do too. And I hate to agree with Meta about just about anything, but I actually think that that's fair enough. That seems fair. It should be a level playing field. That seems fair. They should all be reduced. Yeah. A night mode block that stops teens from posting or viewing their feed stories, the explore page, or reels from midnight to 6 a.m. blocks on notifications by default from 8 a.m to 3 p.m during the school year and 10 p.m to 7 a.m all year round prompts and nudges to stop every 15 minutes of continuous use and at 60 and 90 minutes of total time spent on the platform hidden like counts now that's interesting and disabling cosmetic surgery and extreme makeup filters this actually sounds like a pretty good start

37:11Linus Sebastian:The other part that sounds pretty good is the$17.1 billion.

37:15Luke Lafreniere:Yeah, like an actual, no, but this is an amount of money that we care about amount. Yeah. Meta is also introducing opt-in features like non-algorithmic feed options and the ability to toggle off autoplay when scrolling videos. i am wondering if i need to create a smurf instagram account that i might actually want to use that i just set to an age under 18 holy crap i wonder if that's gonna be really interesting

37:47Linus Sebastian:the new meta so to speak i wonder if i would be willing to install it again if i just pretended

37:53Luke Lafreniere:i was a kid change my birthday to something and disable non-algorith or put on non-algorithmic feed uh toggle off autoplay it would be really nice if they made it so that you could just flip a switch for this no without being a kid no oh but see the switch flip is why it wouldn't work it you would have to use an account that is so you set your account age to like give the keys to someone else to eight or something like that so you'd have um so you'd have 10 years and then you you literally just like what you could do it might not even be relevant at the end of that you could create a parent account for that account literally scramble the password paste it into the next thing and then throw away the key and then there would be no way to maybe there would be a way but there would be it'd be very onerous to get it unlocked in any way it would be yeah not worth it uh all right what else we got outside of changing the platform for teens meta is strengthening parental controls improving response time for dealing with reported harmful content committing to 90 of reports within six hours bringing on an independent auditor who can review the platform changes and can communicate concerns to the attorney generals or attorneys general and instituting robust age assurance measures to detect users under 18 as well as measures to identify and remove kids from under 13 on their platforms okay so you'd only get five years because you'd have to be 13.

39:20Luke Lafreniere:Yeah. Relating to the settlement amount. Okay. This is again, where I hate to agree with meta, but I actually kind of see their point. 70 % will be paid annually over the next 10 years. So they do get to pay in installments, which at the rate that inflation's going, that payment they make in 10 years is going to be a lot less money than it is today,

39:36Linus Sebastian:but it should inflate with it.

39:39Luke Lafreniere:It is a lot of money. I can kind of understand why this can be on a payment plan, but the remaining should just inflate over time. The remaining 30. Oh yeah. If there was if there was interest then i guess that would like balance every payment plan should generally work i agree they should do that i don't know if it i don't know if that's what they're doing but anyway there's two other conditions one is that youtube and tiktok have to implement a one-hour daily limit night mode and age assurance measures and the next one is that youtube and tiktok have to each pay an amount matching the 30 figure so that the first one yeah totally agree everyone should be on the same playing field for meta to be penalized it should be like well if i'm doing something so wrong then everyone else should have to fix their stuff too fair enough i don't know if i understand the youtube and tiktok each paying an amount matching the 30 figure because they should pay but it should be a separate settlement in my

40:31Linus Sebastian:opinion i agree i feel like youtubes should really only be hit for shorts interesting oh but then like nothing might be by i not i might be i am very biased here actually but i still think that i might be i might be wrong due to my bias but i still think it yeah i have never actually heard anyone say until shorts youtube is rotting out the kids coco melon though that's a good point Cocomelon is served through YouTube. Yeah.

41:09Luke Lafreniere:I don't know if I can get behind that. I think that the key differentiator...

41:16Linus Sebastian:Yeah, maybe YouTube's screwed too.

41:17Luke Lafreniere:...for shorts is the discovery feed, right? Because there's a lot of short-form content. I do think it is worse, though.

41:27Linus Sebastian:No, I agree. Instagram and TikTok both function that way. Agree. Elsa Gate brings up charcoal onion. Yeah. No, I think that... Sure, okay. hey, I think you can get YouTube on a couple things. Yeah, yeah. But I don't think it's equal.

41:40Luke Lafreniere:So it's not that I don't want them to pay. It's just that I don't think it has, I don't think their payment has anything to do with the Metta settlement in that case.

41:49Linus Sebastian:Yeah.

41:50Luke Lafreniere:The maximum, okay, this is where you might get upset about the$17 billion because the maximum theoretical ceiling for the settlement could have been 1.4 trillion. This is according to Metta though, and it's largely seen as hyperbole. The state's realistic estimate was more like 200 billion. So they still got a good deal, like by an order of magnitude so a lot of people are upset about this they see 12 billion as a slap on the wrist compared to either of those above figures but one possible it was never going to be 1.4 trillion yeah and one possible reason that there was an agreement on this low figure is that

42:25Linus Sebastian:by getting this settled they can actually move the the actions of the companies which i i i

42:36Luke Lafreniere:If they had issued a$1.4 trillion fine or something like that, Meadow would have been fighting this for the next half a decade in the courts. Till the end of time. Whereas here, they're paying$17 billion, and they're actually significantly altering the product. Like now. I think I prefer that. I want the changes to happen. okay this is an this is a bit of an annoyance because this is a settlement rather than them losing a trial meta has not admitted guilt and maintains the position that the states were cherry-picking features and ignoring the already built-in safety tools i um guys like angry panda

43:21Linus Sebastian:pc said uh 1.2 trillion would have been great it sure meta's market cap from from what i can find on Google right now is like, that would be like over half of their worth.

43:35Luke Lafreniere:And their total cash, according to AI overview, is about 90 billion. So like they don't have 1.2 trillion dollars.

43:45Linus Sebastian:What I'm seeing on macrotrends.com is that they have one point, that would be like 80 % of everything that they have. Yeah, that 1.47 is roughly, I'm seeing 1.45, handyman's at 1.47. You want them to pay 1.2, they're just gone, which like... Okay. Sure. Sure. But that's, it doesn't feel very realistic.

44:10Luke Lafreniere:Yeah, and I don't think that that's, I don't think you're creating an environment that is, you don't want the pendulum to swing too far the other way, right? Like completely unregulated tech giants, bad. but just going um you did something that was not okay your company is completely obliterated off of the face of the earth i think you're going to stifle innovation and i've got to find i don't

44:36Linus Sebastian:necessarily mind like i see this happening to meta and i'm like oh no anyways yeah uh but who

44:42Luke Lafreniere:else does this start happening to and what about the what about the next innovator who looks at what happened to meta and goes actually maybe i'll just do my innovation somewhere else i can I can see the states not wanting to just nuke meta also yeah how many how many hundreds of thousands of people would suddenly be unemployed if meta didn't exist tomorrow I don't know a lot um how many people work for meta yeah not as many as did six months ago you know I just flagged the

45:11Linus Sebastian:defense of YouTube and I would do it again uh not hundreds of thousands tens of thousands so

45:15Luke Lafreniere:they're around 78 ,000 apparently according to macro trends like if the same treatment was

45:20Linus Sebastian:happening to youtube i would think it was ridiculous so it's like okay cool sure nuke them but just i don't know if i want that swung against everybody um i actually i know that i don't want that swung against everybody so there it is um yeah i i think it could be higher but considering most of the amounts that we're used to from these types of settlements this will hurt yeah yep and like i know i know crystal and chats like the issue with meta is

45:55Luke Lafreniere:that they've continued consistently done crappy stuff yeah you're 100 right and hopefully 17 billion is enough for them to go okay let's dial it back i mean microsoft dialed it back for a long time and then they just they got forcibly split eventually and then they were like oh they don't do that anymore yeah let's go so what we need is what what we need is for them to keep going after the tech giants getting sizable settlements and then allowing them to police themselves to the extent that they are aware police actually exist and are watching what they're doing if that kind of makes sense like that i think we'll get better behavior out of them if they know that there could be any enforcement that actually matters people are saying it's a drop

46:52Linus Sebastian:in the bucket for them not really i don't think that's true i i like i guys i'm the first to line up to say i would i am happy a hammer is going towards meta i'm looking at um let's see they have 90 bill cash right now 10 of their yearly profit yeah that's a really big hit if you got

47:13Luke Lafreniere:a fine that was 10 % of your income, or what does that work out to for cash on hand, so closer to 20%, or 20 % of all the money that you have, would you be like, that blows? Probably. Like, if a cop just showed up and was like, you were speeding, I'll take 20 % of all the cash in your bank account, you'd probably think that kind of sucks. No, no, they have 90 billion cash. oh i see market cap is not how much money you have no i'm not doing market cap i'm doing how much they profited in the last year yeah so profit was 10 but but cash was more like closer to 20 it's like 17 or 18 or something like that either of those outcomes you'd be like lame not cool

48:02Linus Sebastian:that's yeah totally that's what i would do uh yeah apparently they this is based on macro trends again um lat for the last 12 months as of june 30th 2026 they profited 186 and a half billion so it's like you know it's a little bit below 10 but pretty close

48:22Luke Lafreniere:all right should we oh wait no no no that's not it johan gear says they aren't paying it all themselves they're only paying a third if google and microsoft pay a third each not what's happening that's how that works uh and microsoft wasn't mentioned at any point in there it's just that they're part of it they're only paying if others also pay so that's on top yeah it's it's yeah

48:43Linus Sebastian:youtube and tiktok not microsoft and it's they youtube and tiktok would pay a amount matching the 30 figure not not replacing it or anything like that all right

48:56Luke Lafreniere:what do you want to what do you want to talk about should we find some good news

49:00Linus Sebastian:no no uh okay yeah sure china joins europe in scrapping windows didn't we talk about this No. Okay. Bloomberg reported that China's Ministry of State Security has told some state-linked organizations to pull Windows off their machines. Those agencies have been running an OS called Windows 10 China Government Edition. Seriously? We have to get our hands on that somehow. That would be amazing. it's a customized version of it's a customized version Microsoft built for Beijing in 2016 through a joint venture with state-owned China Electronics Technology Group and despite it being a decade old they're planning to keep using it they had planned they had planned to keep using it until February 2027 the new order moves that timetable up several months and cuts Windows out entirely with officials citing data security concerns around US software and pointing to any specific vulnerability.

50:02Linus Sebastian:Without pointing to any specific vulnerability. Microsoft says it's not aware of a security incident involving the product and that it still gets regular updates. I don't think that's relevant to what China's talking about at all, to be clear. Beijing hasn't officially named replacements. I thought we talked about this and I thought they did name like three or four different options. Am I tripping so hard right now? Beijing hasn't officially named replacements, but the leading candidates are homegrown distros, Kylan OS from Kylan Software and Union Tech's UOS, which traces its lineage to Deepin and Debian.

50:36Linus Sebastian:Both companies already sell into the Chinese government and critical infrastructure deployments, and both stocks jumped on the report. The order is limited to certain government systems, and consumers and private businesses can keep using Windows or whatever they want at all. This fits China's larger push towards digital sovereignty, following moves like France telling its ministries to transition from Windows to Linux back in April. China's own campaign goes back years with a 2019 program to replace foreign PCs and government offices and a 2022 order for central agencies and state-owned companies to remove foreign branded computers.

51:13Linus Sebastian:Microsoft has closed at least 15 Chinese offices this might be part of why and joint ventures over the last five years though it still sells cloud and AI services there. Yeah.

51:26Luke Lafreniere:So this has been a long time coming. We can get it?

51:32Linus Sebastian:Really? Internet Archive Windows 10 China Government Edition.

51:39Linus Sebastian:It's a leaked ISO. I'm going to put that on your laptop. That's actually so interesting.

51:45Luke Lafreniere:I bet it's just Windows, man.

51:48Linus Sebastian:It's probably just Windows 10.

51:49Luke Lafreniere:I bet it's cleaner, though.

51:52Linus Sebastian:How much you want to bet it's cleaner? It has to be cleaner. What about Chinese recall? Does it have Chinese back doors? I mean, normal Windows 10 does. But that's... Normal Windows 10 has kind of American ones?

52:10Luke Lafreniere:As far as you know.

52:11Linus Sebastian:Yeah. It's an interesting idea.

52:16Luke Lafreniere:Okay, well, if there are any, it'll be labeled like this. That apparently means backdoor yeah that's a different thing sir

52:32um

52:34Luke Lafreniere:well good luck with that china i mean is what i would have said you know five ten years ago um hey these are the background enjoy yourselves china i thought this was just a random image

52:45Linus Sebastian:but this is the background you can see the like windows oh i think so it's actually really cool it looks great i like that background i like for some reason care about windows backgrounds yeah i guess these are different various backgrounds

53:06Luke Lafreniere:wow i mean they're very windows background energy oh yeah it's extremely believable

53:15Linus Sebastian:i'm fascinated dude i'm i'm nerd sniped but like by this extremely so we'd have to try to pick apart like what's actually different

53:26Luke Lafreniere:i mean i don't know that we have the software engineering chops to we might be able to

53:34Linus Sebastian:tap somebody who does this feels like maybe in bringing an external expert i can't believe that i had ever i can't believe i'd never heard of this me neither oh yeah it looks like the same

53:49Luke Lafreniere:but oh yeah yeah that's windows 10 all right yep

53:58Luke Lafreniere:is that two gigs of ram yeah wow it sounds expensive i didn't know they went that low Wow, Dan I mean, these days they do

54:11Linus Sebastian:It's like Dan's equivalent of like What's wrong with the pores? Oh, yeah I didn't know RAM went that low We got a new one I've never even heard of anything below 16 gigabytes You can run computers with less than 64 gigabytes of RAM? I prefer all of my memory ECC Yes Quiet

54:36Luke Lafreniere:indubitably four channel is for the hoi polloi

54:43Luke Lafreniere:okay there's a group planning a one-week playstation blackout to protest sony's plan to end physical game production calling for players to turn off their consoles or log out of psn from august 23rd to 30th this is from the preservation group does it play and there's a coalition of creators behind the campaign asking for players to make their voices heard they're calling it giving sony a small taste of its own medicine after the company announced it will stop producing games in january 2028 the blackout is theoretically running right now and ends in just a couple of days critics among the player base argue that the timing is kind of toothless because it lands on a quiet august week that overlaps with gamescom and the emerging consensus is that cancelling PlayStation Plus and buying games on disk would hurt Sony in ways that a temporary logout could not.

55:38Luke Lafreniere:Sony has not responded to the protest, but its timing elsewhere made things worse. Starting around August 18th, users began receiving an email titled, PlayStation Terms Copy for Your Records, containing the company's full terms of service, including the line that software is licensed to you, not sold. The Verge's Tom Warren points out that the emails landed days before a blackout driven partly by digital ownership fears. The licensing language is standard across digital storefronts, but Sony is the first platform holder to put a formal end date on disk production, so the reminder read a little differently coming from Sony.

56:13Luke Lafreniere:Here's our discussion question. If Sony offered a real concession, like letting you download and backup your digital library DRM-free, would that settle the complaint, or is there just no digital substitute for a disk on a shelf?

56:28Linus Sebastian:I mean I think if you could that would make a disc on a shelf

56:40Luke Lafreniere:Discussion question. When was the last time you bought a physical game?

56:45Linus Sebastian:Like a couple months ago. Cool. Yeah. It's been a little longer for me. Technically, my last time was in Japan. I bought Pocopia. But I don't buy digital Switch games.

56:59Luke Lafreniere:Yeah, okay. I was about to say the last time I bought a physical game was also for Switch. I think it was like Ring Fit Adventure or something.

57:07Linus Sebastian:I don't think my Switch has ever had my credit card. Because like I'm just going to buy physical games. The, I, you know, it's practically impossible to buy physical games for computers. It has been for a very long time. Oh yeah. So I haven't there. But anything that you could buy a physical game for, I have only bought physical games.

57:33Luke Lafreniere:do you check gog before you buy any game often not always but often i do actually do that for those not familiar gog is based af yeah you just there's no drm there's no cd keys there's no online checks more games you just you just buy the game and then you just like download lay files and launch the files Redneck Rampage. Nice.

58:01Linus Sebastian:Yeah, and like, man, you know, I would really support more games being on here. It's just like one of the problems. I mean, it's in the name, right? They say old.

58:11Luke Lafreniere:I meant to buy Warcraft 3 on here before the Reforged launch so that I'd like have a good working copy of it. And then I didn't bother and now I regret it so much.

58:21Linus Sebastian:Yeah.

58:22Luke Lafreniere:Apparently Reforged is like fixed now, but still, i would have loved to just have a not crappy drm'd original what is that what am i looking at here what was this i paused on this as well

58:40Linus Sebastian:that's cool tamriel rebuilt so they have like mod packs now open morrow wind on gog i did not know this cl gog mods i didn't know they were doing this what the devil is diablo beelzebub I don't know. Diablo HD mod?

58:55Luke Lafreniere:Like Diablo 1?

58:56Linus Sebastian:I've heard of Stalker Anomaly.

58:59Luke Lafreniere:I want to say Beelzebub. Beelzebub.

59:02Linus Sebastian:Let me try to find it.

59:09Luke Lafreniere:Diablo 1 HD mod? What?

59:20What?

59:21Luke Lafreniere:Okay, that, uh, I'm not sure if that looked like much other than a smoothing filter. In fairness, it's hard for me to see. It's pretty far out there.

59:33Linus Sebastian:It's also YouTube compression-y.

59:35Luke Lafreniere:Yeah. I have no idea what quality it's running at.

59:38Linus Sebastian:Oh, lag. There we go. Did I get that fly? Please tell me you got it. Oh, I got it.

59:45Luke Lafreniere:Oh, it's on my new laptop from Dell, who sponsors the LAN show.

59:50Linus Sebastian:It is, too. Get out of here. There we go. And you're dead. So it's only uploaded in 720p, and there's like crazy compression artifacts, so I'm not actually really sure what it looks like. Okay. I don't know that we can use the video as a good reference. Okay. Well, neat. I navigated away. Okay. That's cool, though. I didn't realize they did mods. That's awesome. Yeah. that's actually really exciting check out gog gog is very based i do have games on gog

1:00:19Luke Lafreniere:i bought tie fighter on gog like years ago a lot of the time it it's not just as simple as like oh yeah like the the crappy old files that were meant to run on ms dos 6 or whatever are just re-uploaded there they actually put in work to make these games run on modern platforms which is super super cool chinese memory firm cxmt allegedly relied on leaked samsung technology to skip years of r &d no never china wow wow their name even sounds like tsmc the testimony comes from a former samsung engineer identified only by his surname jian who spent 28 years at samsung before jumping to CXMT around its founding in 2016.

1:01:09Luke Lafreniere:He was sentenced to seven years in April for illegally obtaining Samsung's process recipe plan, a roughly 600-step blueprint that covers DRAM manufacturing steps, equipment, and process conditions that took Samsung five years and over a billion dollars to develop. The court found that he took about$2 million from CXMT for it. This month, he testified in Seoul, as reported by Meili Business, that from the beginning, CXMT CEO and CTO tried to develop DRAM by stealing Samsung Electronics process recipe plan information, adding that CXMT had no research institutes at its founding and no intention of developing the technology through its own research.

1:01:53Luke Lafreniere:CXMT is now China's largest DRAM maker, producing around 350 ,000 wafers a month per tech spot and closing in on micron for total volume. It's also the company that many are hoping will ease the current memory shortage. Legal experts say that Samsung could use the sworn testimony and conviction to push for a Section 337 investigation at the U.S. International Trade Commission, which could end in a ban on CXMT memory imports. CXMT has not publicly responded to the testimony. Tale as old as time, baby.

1:02:29Linus Sebastian:Tale as old as time. Not that I, you know, support the insane IP theft, but the ban of them means this whole RAM problem is cooked for a lot longer than we had maybe hoped for.

1:02:45Luke Lafreniere:No, I don't agree. Because if it's banned for like, you know, Western imports, it's not like China is going to stop shipping DRAM within China, which is already one point however many billion people. it's not like they're going to stop shipping DRAM to like the Middle East so maybe they're the demand level in Russia North Korea so so they can supply all of that and then that will free up wafers elsewhere like it's it will still um you know help consumers pay less in that sense I know

1:03:17Linus Sebastian:we're already like sort of trending that direction but going back to like regional technology would be a very strange future dude it's happening yeah it's happening i mean look i mean it's all

1:03:33Luke Lafreniere:it's already a thing to go to china it feels different like china is moving away from windows for government machines um which means that if you want to work in the chinese government you are going to have to be familiar with uh i forget the names of the other potential operating systems but like if you're if you're like a windows user you're gonna have to you're gonna have to learn this other stuff it's it's going to normalize it it's going to just you're going to go to china and you're going to be like hi i use windows and they'll be like the f**k is windows and it's going to take a while but micron what's micron scrappity b said cxmt is not trying to make ram cost less

1:04:12Linus Sebastian:they didn't get into the business decreased cost yeah but it's supply and demand uh etzium said china will still import ram that is also probably true but they wouldn't have to import as much because again, supply and demand.

1:04:24Luke Lafreniere:Yes. Ram, whether it should be or not, is traded like a commodity. So the more of it there is, total, the more the pricing will be impacted by that. It's just, it's math. Math is math. I don't make the rules.

1:04:43Luke Lafreniere:Okay, next one. Do you want to pick a happy topic or a less happy topic? We could do the flock roundup. Yeah, let's do it. All right. I do not know how to pronounce these things Tempe and Pflugerville, I believe Pflugerville, with a P Sure Pretty sure Tempe, Arizona and Pflugerville, Texas Have joined more than 100 cities across the US In turning off their flock cameras In response to public outcry According to the non-profit Institute for Justice At least 105 local governments have cancelled or not renewed their automatic license plate recognition contracts since the beginning of 2025. That list does not include jurisdictions that have simply paused operation or who have moved to another similar solution.

1:05:32Luke Lafreniere:In related news, an Oviedo, Florida man, is facing three felony charges for destroying a flock camera after he was caught removing a 3D-printed decoy that was placed by police as part of a sting operation. Techspot reports that Evan Meyer, 24, places counts of criminal mischief causing more than$1 ,000 in damage, grand theft involving property value between$750 and$5 ,000, and damaging or taking a computer, electronic device, or related equipment. The decoy was printed at home by a police officer who reportedly did not build a city for time or materials. Very trays. Interesting. Finally, Gizmodo reports on a wired investigation into Flock's new AI tool.

1:06:11Luke Lafreniere:The new system lets police and other Flock subscribers search using natural language and includes 69 pre-written prompts that officers can modify. One provided example asked the system to find witnesses based on vehicles most seen in neighborhood during last 14 days, during daily timeframe. Flock has come under additional fire following a string of revelations of officers abusing its technology. Earlier this month, the Washington Post reported that at least 50 officers had been charged with or accused of misusing flock cameras, in many of these cases, specifically to stalk women. Our discussion question says, hey, at least this topic started out fun and happy, eh?

1:06:59Luke Lafreniere:So we got baited. That's a pretty flocked up thing to do.

1:07:05Linus Sebastian:Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.

1:07:10Luke Lafreniere:Oh, man. The thing that drives me crazy about this is, did you catch the part in there where I said that this count doesn't include municipalities that have moved on to similar systems? Can you name any of them? Are we outraged about them? Will we get outraged about them? Or is this just one of those situations where the point of the spear gets all bent and flock ultimately, you know, doesn't survive this or whatever, but hey the rest of the head of the spear still impales us and we still have a big wooden shaft

1:07:47Linus Sebastian:going into our body so to speak i also feel like flock might totally just survive this just fine oh yeah

1:07:59Luke Lafreniere:genesis 89 25 says they'll just flog to another provider

1:08:07Linus Sebastian:or you know all the many many many many other places that still have not turned them off will leave them on or they'll rebrand themselves so they'll do something like you said other companies they could just splinter into multiple other companies or again just rebadge i mean this is extremely extremely common with like um private military contractors just change their name every once in a while oh we did a bunch of stuff and now people don't like blackwater let's just be named something else okay sweet now they don't know how to talk about us anymore and it works like every time

1:08:49Luke Lafreniere:google has begun rolling out android's controversial new side loading flow their android community engagement manager michelle raman announced on reddit that the advanced flow has started its gradual rollout. So this is the process for installing apps from developers who haven't registered with Google, and it arrives ahead of enforcement starting September 30th in Brazil, Indonesia, Singapore, and Thailand before expanding worldwide in 2027. Sideloading apps from registered developers works the same as always. Raman also confirmed the source of the APK is irrelevant. So an unregistered developer's app will trigger this flow, whether it came from FDroid or another app store or directly from a website.

1:09:30Luke Lafreniere:So here's how the flow works. If you want to install one of these unregistered developer apps, you open up your developer options. You turn on allow apps from unverified developers. You authenticate with your screen lock. You confirm that nobody is pressuring you to change the setting. Then your phone makes you restart and you wait a full 24 hours. After you wait 24 hours, you come back and choose whether to allow unverified apps for seven days or indefinitely. And then installs will still show a warning with an install anyway button. What Google says is that this delay exists to break up scams where victims are coached through installing a malicious app live on the phone since scammers can't keep someone on the line for an entire day.

1:10:17Luke Lafreniere:The flow covers updates too, so if you switch it off, your existing unverified apps will actually stop updating until you turn it back on. Raman defended that by pointing out a safe app installed today could push a malicious update tomorrow. So, all of that sounds like a lot of user restriction that, if we're being realistic, probably won't work because if I'm a scammer, I'll just be like, okay, I'll call you back tomorrow. Like, I don't really, I don't know that this will actually do anything other than slow the whole flow down by a day. However, the one sort of saving grace here is that power users do get an escape hatch because installing over ADB from a computer skips the whole rigmarole.

1:11:03Luke Lafreniere:So, see, I... That helps a lot, actually. When they originally announced this, because we've talked about this before. when they originally announced it, people were still super mad. They were like, but ma freedom. And I was like, yeah, but they already kind of backed down on this a little bit by allowing ADB. If you could ADB an app onto the phone, then in my mind, this doesn't really affect developers anymore. Because a developer can just crap the app over to their phone over a USB cable.

1:11:34Linus Sebastian:Oh, I thought you could...

1:11:39Linus Sebastian:Maybe I'm not as cool with it. Sorry. My interpretation of that was you could shift it into this mode through connecting it to a computer, and then it would skip all the time gates. No.

1:11:49Luke Lafreniere:The reception to it is still pretty rough. 84 % of over 5 ,000 Android Authority poll respondents said that this flow won't meaningfully cut scams unless there are changes to the Play Store itself. And I think that is actually the most fundamental problem here is that google is laying because i do think the actions that they're taking will help but agree a hundred percent that it would have to be done in conjunction with changes to the play store because so many of the apps that scammers use are in the play store i wonder what kit boga feels about this that would actually you know what i'd be i'd i'd be really curious to hear what he thinks about it because he is way more immersed in this world the world of scammers than

1:12:36Linus Sebastian:i am not because he is a scammer because the the callback thing that you mentioned like yeah they could just call back it's like yeah maybe the time gap helps maybe it doesn't i don't know uh will they actually call back is that a significant barrier i mean any barrier is a

1:12:53Luke Lafreniere:barrier right like not getting pickpocketed is often as simple as just like having articles of clothing that make it harder to pickpocket you. They don't want to get caught. They're going to go for the lowest hanging fruit. Kuro says scams

1:13:08Linus Sebastian:just evolve, and I do agree. Oh yeah, totally. But should we never... You should generally make them evolve.

1:13:17Luke Lafreniere:Should the mouse never try to run faster? Should it just accept its fate being caught by the cat? I don't know about that.

1:13:29Luke Lafreniere:archangel of death says the 24 hours at least gives them time to think and maybe call family or friends for them to be like hey yeah no don't do that yeah i can see that like that's something that my aunt is really good about that when she gets an email or she gets a text message or something that she's not sure about but she thinks is such she'll send it to me or she'll say hey can I show this to you next time I'm there and I'm like yeah totally yes yes I would so much rather you bother me a hundred times over nothing than not bother me one time and get ripped off you

1:14:03Linus Sebastian:know this is a slight tangent not much yeah it's very interesting to me I've told you about that call that I received that was like a robo call yeah but it like had me for a while yep it's weird to me that I've experienced that and then I also was trying to find something the other day So I checked my spam folder of my personal email and saw a bunch of the like scam attempts that have happened to my personal email. And they are just garbage. Prince of Nigeria. That level stuff. Nice. And it's just, it's interesting the gap right now. In like the scams that are probably just, you know, some bot that's just been running for years.

1:14:43Linus Sebastian:And the really sophisticated modern stuff that you can do. It's, yeah, wow.

1:14:51Luke Lafreniere:I mean, I guess it's just like driving around on the road. There's, you know, a brand new Mercedes and there's a clapped out 1970s VW Beetle.

1:15:01Linus Sebastian:Right next to each other.

1:15:02Luke Lafreniere:Yeah, they're all still out there. Yeah, it's crazy. The fact that new, better stuff exists doesn't mean that an old workflow that, you know, that costs nothing to continue to run, right? Compared to the newer stuff that actually has costs associated with it. That makes sense. and manages to capture the lowest hanging of fish. You know, that's the thing. I probably shouldn't have hung up on that call. Was there really anything to be learned from it? I shouldn't. Just so it could cost them more?

1:15:35Linus Sebastian:I should have like started. More tokens. I should have like got an AI agent on my side in voice mode and just had them talk to each other or something. I don't know. Ah, anyways.

1:15:50Luke Lafreniere:Never heard of clapped out? I'm pretty sure that's a thing. Is that a BC term? I don't know. Yeah.

1:15:57Linus Sebastian:Clapped out is definitely a thing here. Yeah, it's a thing. Yeah.

1:16:07Luke Lafreniere:All right. Oh, we should probably jump into our first sponsors. The show is brought to you today by AMD. Our writer, Jordan. just got his$5 ,000 AMD Ultimate Tech upgrade this week, and it was a much-deserved upgrade. He is kind of our resident king of DIY, or at least he's one of the lords of DIY. We'll go with that. So he was sure to snag a combination jointer and planer, but the real standout was his truck, which he had some really cool new upgrades for, including a solar generator, and has some further modifications that he's planning to make that sound really great as well. You'll have to watch the full video to hear about that.

1:16:51Luke Lafreniere:And of course, he also got a PC upgrade. You can also upgrade your PC though. So don't be jealous of Jordan's PC. Get your own. AMD is running a sweepstakes right now, giving away a 9800X3D CPU and a gigabyte Radeon RX9070XT overclocked edition GPU. The link to enter both is on the video we posted this week, as well as here in the description on the WAN show. Now, on to AMD's question for us, Luke. With high-end gaming builds, are we moving from what's the fastest to what's the most consistent experience? And when does it make more sense to spend on the CPU for smoother lows versus spending on the GPU for higher settings and resolution?

1:17:39Luke Lafreniere:I think we're moving to

1:17:41Linus Sebastian:what is the thing i can afford what can i buy and and i i think i think you're right completely and i think like when you look at the what is it bc 250 what is it called yeah those those old mining

1:17:51Luke Lafreniere:like that's what's really those mining rigs i thought they're the playstation bc is for bitcoin

1:17:59Linus Sebastian:oh yeah oh so they were originally used for that i didn't even know that yeah interesting yeah that's in the video that video is coming soon i recorded it earlier this week like people doing like hardware hacking and like trying to find ways to make older hardware or hardware not intended for that work for them to drive down costs and and keep things affordable and honestly it's really fun i heard about these these bc250s and got really excited and thought about like and then turns out i i saw there's some youtuber that already did this but like can I 3D print a case for it and make a steam machine because that's sick

1:18:38Luke Lafreniere:it's the thrill of getting more for less right? it's fun you know Yvonne doesn't buy a$5 top because she needs another shirt you know she has shirts it's not about that it was$5 yeah wicked It's the thrill of the hunt. Yeah. And it's a funny thing. Like, I don't have to bargain shop. I'm at a stage in my life where I don't have to. I still like a deal. I still go on Steam Summer Sale and sort by lowest price. Me too.

1:19:19Linus Sebastian:Just to see. 100%, yeah. It's like, but look, I got 25 games for like 30 bucks. The deep discount section? Yeah, buddy. Oh, yeah. yeah buddy hell yeah yeah it's fun and um it's it's cool that man the indomitable human will is always a hell of a thing in in a time of like extreme never been worse strife in the computer industry to be completely honest a lot of the community has responded by like alright F it we'll do it ourselves we'll rip these mining devices and turn them into things we can make into steam machines we'll take these old GPUs we'll give more VRAM to them we'll take these other GPUs we'll software unlock them we'll solder these capacitors on we'll make it do more we'll push it harder we'll push it further it's cool it's fun I like that it's happening with the BC250s because even though their price has gone up a ton since people realize that you can do this to them they're still still

1:20:25Luke Lafreniere:pretty affordable very accessible yeah um before our full mainline video goes up might be a good time to get one if you're if you're into it so if you're not familiar um there are these mining boards that were made out of harvested playstation 5 chips um back during the the great 2020 crypto boom basically yeah they look a little bit like this they're kind of little like blade blade machines so they've got the PlayStation 5 SoC but it's not quite running at the full PlayStation 5 specs so out of the box it comes with what is it 28 rather than 36 CUs and a six core CPU rather than apparently eight core

1:21:14Linus Sebastian:people are messing around with software unlocks which sometimes work and

1:21:18Luke Lafreniere:sometimes don't so spoiler spoiler for our upcoming video on it we managed to get ours to the full 40 oh wow cus rather than the 36 on the ps5 i know you guys are doing stuff i don't know anything about the internal video so cool yeah we didn't unlock our cpu cores though because as you can see this is not a thick heat sink no yeah so this is designed for like like to be slotted in all next to each other and have very powerful fans going through them so it's it's a little tricky to get enough airflow through this thing so we found that once we were dealing with the additional power of 14 more cus versus the stock configuration that we had or 12 more i can't remember it's 2028 i think actually uh so yeah 12 more cus not to mention um with certain mods you can unlock the clock speed oh so we had like way more power consumption on ours so as soon as we put an enclosure on it even with two noctua industrial fans it was still kind of struggling a little bit but I've seen people water cool them.

1:22:17Linus Sebastian:Yeah, when are people going to come out with... Yeah, okay, I was just going to say, when are people going to come out with custom coolers?

1:22:21Luke Lafreniere:You can mount AIOs to them with brackets and stuff. Sick. There are downsides, guys. Don't just buy one of these thinking, okay, this is my new gaming rig. You have to run Linux. There are certain variants that support it really well, other variants that support it kind of okay, and some that it might be a bit of a hassle to get it working.

1:22:39Linus Sebastian:Cache, Bazite, SteamOS, I've heard, are all doing okay.

1:22:42Luke Lafreniere:I don't know about SteamOS. I know Cache and Bazite are good. I literally don't know about SteamOS it's possible I don't either this is all but there's also some I encountered I think I tried to fire up Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth because that was like in my mind a great example of something that runs really well on the PlayStation 5 and I wanted to know okay but like how far off are we right and it did not work at all and I did find a Reddit thread where someone got it working a bit but it clearly still had issues and it turns out that it's not quite a PS5, guys. Hardware encoding and decoding does not work.

1:23:21Linus Sebastian:Yeah, video, right? At all. Yeah.

1:23:24Luke Lafreniere:That's pretty brutal. Which sucks because... If you want it to be a media center box. It's DOA for that. Yeah. And then additionally, there are some sort of hardware units. I didn't look into it enough, but basically it's an older GPU at this point. and on PC games are expecting a level of hardware support that either is not fully enabled on this one or it was done in kind of like a weird janky Playstation way so there are some games that even though they like should work and are Proton compatible they don't work on this at least not right now so your mileage may vary it's more of a hobby project than like a this is my new daily driver PC yeah but also if you were willing to accept the compromises you could have a full pc with 16 gigs of working gddr6 memory for under 300 all in so the board shipping a doorstop grade power supply and then a modest storage drive you could be off to the races look at what some people are doing

1:24:30Linus Sebastian:with this this is like from seven months ago yeah so i'm sure things have advanced but like You can see the model for what they built. This is so sweet.

1:24:40Luke Lafreniere:I had some questions about the interconnect. Channel is so cool. What is that connector on the bottom? Yeah, I don't know. Because it looks like it's designed for a blade server, not PCI. Which connector on the bottom? You mean these power connectors? Yeah, that's the bottom. And then where's the PCI? There is no PCI.

1:25:02Linus Sebastian:It's a computer.

1:25:03Luke Lafreniere:Yeah, the whole computer is here.

1:25:05Linus Sebastian:oh yeah it's not a card oh my god yeah it just mounts yeah they're really cool yeah and like there's just a ton of different stuff completely i'm so sorry in in a ton of different realms where people are software and hardware unlocking capabilities on things and i've i've always loved this i remember i don't remember what card it was but i remember back in the in the house 2013 there was some amd card that you could upgrade it an entire version maybe if it worked with a bios flash that goes back farther than that baby no i know it's just like

1:25:39Luke Lafreniere:let's let's talk radio on 9500 with the l configuration memory

1:25:48Linus Sebastian:i think the one in the house was the first time i had experience actually doing it myself i had read about it on forums and stuff. Vega 56 to 64. There's all these different things. Super fun, super interesting, and I'm happy that it's happening to something that is relatively cost effective.

1:26:05Luke Lafreniere:Hell yeah. Remember the Omega drivers? I think I had one of those. I think it was X800 Pro Pencil Mod. Let's see if I can find it. Yeah, Volt Mods. Let's go. So I actually I bought a graphite or not graphite I bought a conductive pencil so that I could perform a pencil mod on my I think it was my 9600 All in Wonder was it an x800? I can't remember exactly when that happened but basically what you would do is

1:26:40Linus Sebastian:adding traces basically?

1:26:42Luke Lafreniere:well it's not so much that you're adding traces as that you are reducing the resistance oh and so the amount of graphite that you have makes the trace thicker or thinner effectively changing the voltage that gets delivered. So you have to use a multimeter to actually know how much voltage you're giving. See that's cool. It acts as like kind of a voltage multiplier almost. Dude pencil mods were sick. And now that hardware is so locked down it's forcing people to go back to like modded BIOSes and hardware mods and

1:27:24Linus Sebastian:what's up? Sorry, I haven't actually spent time on the subreddit. I didn't realize there was a subreddit. Look at this guy's build one month ago. Look how clean that looks. Oh yeah, that looks sick. Dang. Dang. Magnets and stuff for the panels? My goodness! Very cool. It's a little early for that.

1:27:55Luke Lafreniere:Wait, I only did one of the two sponsor spots? Yeah, we got sniped by the AMD question. Oh, right. The show is also brought to you by Xplit. What do you want to talk about now?

1:29:01Linus Sebastian:Comcast is turning millions of its routers into motion detectors. Yeah. That sounds fun and useful for the user. Comcast launched a home protection platform called Xfinity Shield on August 18th. And the headline feature is Wi-Fi motion. an opt-in, thank God, setting that uses the Xfinity gateway and connected devices to detect motion inside the home without cameras or dedicated sensors. The base Wi-Fi Shield tier is free for Xfinity internet customers. And a$15 per month Shield Select tier adds hardware, AI enhanced monitoring, and access to emergency services. This feels like something we've been talking about forever.

1:29:45Luke Lafreniere:We have. And has existed for like corporate deployments forever. For like a decade. But is actually being used for consumers in a way that maybe makes sense?

1:30:02Linus Sebastian:Well, keep going. The gateway monitors the radio frequency signals between itself and Wi-Fi connected devices around the home. And when you move through a room, your body interferes with those signals, which the software reads as motion and pushes as an alert in the Xfinity app. Comcast pictures the sensing area as an oval between the gateway and a selected connected device. And sensitivity settings can filter out pets around 40 pounds or less. It works on XB7 and newer gateways. And Comcast says the feature detects motion only without recording video, capturing images, or identifying individuals.

1:30:39Linus Sebastian:It could absolutely identify individuals, but the other ones by default is not how it works. The privacy concern comes from Comcast's own support page.

1:30:54Linus Sebastian:You knew we were going to get to the gotcha, right? Oh, for sure. Which, as noted by TechCrunch, says that subject to applicable law, Comcast may disclose information generated by Wi-Fi motion to third parties without further notice to you. That covers things like law enforcement investigations, disputes where Comcast is a party, and court orders or subpoenas. Opting in effectively creates a timestamped record of when people are moving around your house held by your ISP. And if they have information about the amount of interference caused, they could use that to identify people, just to be clear.

1:31:33Linus Sebastian:Linksys shipped a similar feature in 2021 before discontinuing it, and Wiz and Philips Hue sell light bulbs that detect motion the same way. But the research on what these signals can reveal is moving much faster than the products suggest. Yeah, that makes sense. Researchers at... Carsru? Carl'sru? Sure. Something, Institute of Technology, showed that unencrypted beamforming data, which Wi-Fi devices broadcast constantly just to maintain a good connection can identify specific people walking through a room with 99.5 % accuracy whether or not they're carrying a device. As I had alluded to earlier, although I didn't know this part.

1:32:16Linus Sebastian:Comcast product. You didn't even know it was quite as... Nope. Yeah, but it is. Yeah, cool. Neat, right? Very nice. That's the neat part. I didn't realize it was 99.5. I assumed it would be very high. It's very high. It's very, very high. So high. Oh yeah, really high. Comcast product isn't doing... Come down, come down.

1:32:34Luke Lafreniere:You're too high.

1:32:35Linus Sebastian:You're way too high. Those wings are going to melt, man. Comcast product isn't doing that, but it demonstrates the same category of signal that powers Wi-Fi motion can go well beyond anonymous motion blips. And the IEEE standardized Wi-Fi sensing in 2025 as 802.11bf without any privacy protections, which the researchers are urgently calling to change, which, yes, that makes sense. Thank you, researchers. Always very good. I love our discussion question. If Telesur Rogers rolled this out, would you turn it on? No. If Telesur Rogers rolled this out, I would do what I already did, which is get a different device because the fact that it exists at all is a problem.

1:33:20Linus Sebastian:I assure you that is not a good thing. Dan wrote float plane announcement after this. Man, am I going to be PF sensing my own routers forever or something? Like, how do I just not have this at all? Because, like, eventually it's just going to be built into every device and could be turned on remotely some way.

1:33:41Luke Lafreniere:Is OpenSense still, like, the... Is that the fun one now?

1:33:46Linus Sebastian:The cool one? I haven't done my own router thing in a very long time. Wow, version 26.7, Xenial Xenops. That's awesome, actually. Sure.

1:33:55Luke Lafreniere:I like it. OpenSense is cool. I like OpenSense. I have not used this. Okay. It's new PFSense. Okay, cool. Is this still the cool one though or is there like a new cool one? Chat, let me know. Chat would probably know this. No firewall DMZ is the cool one.

1:34:22Luke Lafreniere:Just expose port 80. Yeah, and ride around on your motorcycle with no helmet. I choose to live dangerously. In shorts. For I intend to move fast and without

1:34:31Linus Sebastian:any privacy, apparently. Floatplane announcement. I mean, it is current year.

1:34:38What?

1:34:39Luke Lafreniere:What? What's up? This is apparently a direct quote from Yvonne in this week's Floatplane exclusive. It's like that X you give one more try. That is how I ended up with Linus. Pfft.

1:35:00Luke Lafreniere:I think she's talking about a laptop. Because this is the exclusive. Is Yvonne happy with her new laptop? Okay. Well, that... Okay. Sammy, gosh darn it, you can't... Anyway, so we have a new exclusive. Does she like her choice? Does she wish that she had one of the laptops I chose for her? and could she have tried a macbook new or even a tablet for her daily driver all these questions are answered and more at lmg.gg slash fp wan thank you very much for that sammy that's very helpful and of course it's full of lots of amazing exclusives like the extras from jordan's amd ultimate tech upgrade as well as the birthday live stream and exclusive content of course we've got three episodes of get a question wrong water balloon drops yes catchy naming sammy love it and oh also this jordan's uh 2009 subaru yeah dude it's so sick truck so you can get a closer look at that flow plane dude flow plane has so much banger content this is an amazing video teaching colton and nicole to swim this is an amazing video sammy versus luke knife fight Did you watch it?

1:36:17Luke Lafreniere:I watched the fight. You can't go that hard on him.

1:36:22Linus Sebastian:He's fragile. I really felt bad on the last hit.

1:36:27Luke Lafreniere:He's a fragile man.

1:36:28Linus Sebastian:I apologize like a lot of times.

1:36:30Luke Lafreniere:He's anxious. You can't...

1:36:32Linus Sebastian:Did you see the quick moves?

1:36:34Luke Lafreniere:Luke. He's not a fighter.

1:36:39Linus Sebastian:1v1 me rust.

1:36:40Luke Lafreniere:It'd be fine for you to go after me like that.

1:36:46Linus Sebastian:It was so entertaining though.

1:36:49Luke Lafreniere:So we were like getting all low on him and stuff. It's like that kid. What kind of kid? I dare! The poor little... No, stop talking! No, I was talking about Mario Kart.

1:37:04Linus Sebastian:I knew where he was going.

1:37:09Linus Sebastian:I think this will probably be the last

1:37:10Luke Lafreniere:Floatplane announcement we do. It's probably the last WAN show. All right, why don't we... Okay, do you want some good news? Okay, we keep saying... What is it? This legitimately sounds kind of cool. Ring cameras are getting a new encryption method. Starting in September, Amazon's Ring is making its new throw-away-the-key encryption, aka take, the default for its cameras. So Ring says that it and authorities will have less access to footage. Ring can briefly use the decryption key to power cloud features such as smart alerts, but then deletes the key. The keys rotate every five minutes. And Ring says that its copies are permanently deleted after 24 hours.

1:37:55Luke Lafreniere:After that, the customer and authorized shared users can still view their footage, and Ring says that it no longer has the ability to decrypt it. Take keeps Ring's cloud-based features working, unlike stricter end-to-end encryption, which Ring also offers. ring is making it harder for itself and therefore law enforcement and hackers to get at your camera footage without completely giving up their cloud features that is a totally redundant sentence um but babies and and nothing prevents like a neighbor for instance who has a ring camera from authorizing law enforcement to use their footage and ring continues to maintain their partnerships with authorities um which are separate things however i would like for more of my devices to be encrypted in such a way that the manufacturer or anyone else cannot decrypt it

1:38:50Linus Sebastian:i i have the same thought as angry panda pc i'm assuming i am assuming they continued this thought from just i don't believe them to the the anchorman meme where he's just like i don't believe you yeah you're gonna delete it in 24 hours sure yeah do you remember what we saw with law enforcement what could ring do i don't think they can if they ever have the ability this is the problem but so what could they do to prove they don't have the ability they can't in this model because they're saying they do hold it for 24 hours and that would mean that it could be man in the middle It could be a rogue person on rings.

1:39:30Linus Sebastian:And we just talked about how police officers were misusing.

1:39:33Luke Lafreniere:But the decryption key won't work anymore after that. Like the keys rotate every five minutes.

1:39:39Linus Sebastian:They're saying that they keep their copies for 24 hours and their copies can be used. I know that said the five minute rotating thing, but then why would they even keep the copies for 24 hours?

1:39:48Luke Lafreniere:So where I was going at with this was actually like what level of audit would you consider acceptable? because like we actually did a smart doorbell roundup. We recorded it last week, I want to say. And one of the issues that I had to raise with Ring was their cooperation with law enforcement. And the fact that they seem to be selling things people don't want as features. Like remember that Super Bowl ad that they ran?

1:40:16Linus Sebastian:Oh yeah.

1:40:17Luke Lafreniere:And it really got me thinking because almost every security camera company that we looked at had some controversy or other. Eufy, TP-Link, Ring, like... Yeah, all of them. If I want a video doorbell at all, what that devil am I supposed to do? You have to basically cook your own. I mean, I think Unify is in pretty good shape in terms of intercepted data.

1:40:43Linus Sebastian:I think so. It's just who they sell stuff to. Unify? Or how well they police who they sell stuff to. Unify? Ubiquity? Yeah.

1:40:51Luke Lafreniere:Yeah. I don't think they have my footage.

1:40:55Linus Sebastian:Because I'm reading it directly off of my server. Oh! I mean their hardware. Sure. People want them to do a better job of policing who their vendors sell their hardware to. Very different kind of scandal.

1:41:05Luke Lafreniere:Yes. I'd consider it. So it's not that they're entirely without scandal. But I haven't seen... Nothing related to this. I've never seen anything related to this. Yeah, I haven't seen anything related to this. They've had security issues. But not related to just like... That's a different thing. Somebody having access to your video feed. Which is like the worst. um like i had someone ask me the other day they were over at our house and they were asking about like the security cameras we have inside our house like oh you know what is that for and i was like well my original intent was like for insurance purposes or whatever if we get broken into like what you know what was stolen where did it go you know what what was it worth blah blah blah blah what we actually use it for more than anything is i've yvonne left her purse somewhere where is it or like when when was the last time i had my keys with me but that's is that is that purely uh on hosted on your stuff but they asked are you not uncomfortable with that and i went no i'm good because all the footage is on hard drives that i own do you access it through a cloud service i do access it through a cloud service is a cloud service that's hosted by you to my knowledge ubiquity's cloud service has not been breached to this date right but is there any

1:42:16Linus Sebastian:way like does that data flow through their servers? I'm assuming

1:42:23Luke Lafreniere:I'm trying to think how you would access it in that way because I don't think they

1:42:35Luke Lafreniere:yeah it would be routed through their servers yep

1:42:39Linus Sebastian:so there's still a concern there

1:42:40Luke Lafreniere:you can disable that though

1:42:43Linus Sebastian:it's an option that helps a ton because if you're like yeah i want to turn this option on that's on that's on you you can make

1:42:50Luke Lafreniere:that decision hold on marchable 27 says it's an encrypted link back to your hardware i believe because i know there's two different modes that you can run you can run through direct connect mode and then you can also run through their like you know proxy or whatever you can run through um but if it's but if it's an encryption that is that the keys are only on my dvr or nvr excuse me and my device, then theoretically that should be enough.

1:43:21Linus Sebastian:There is a certain layer of if it's accessible over the internet at all, there's some amount of security risk.

1:43:32Yeah. Interesting.

1:43:35Luke Lafreniere:My answer was basically I'm comfortable with it because it's ubiquity and if it was anyone else, I don't think I would want a camera pointed inside my house and even then there's none in the bedrooms obviously none in the bathrooms like there's certain areas that are just blackout areas that makes sense yeah especially because like you could do any of the automations that you would need to do there with millimeter wave anyway you don't need a camera i finally set up automations in my daughter's room that she's happy with my family has been driving well my family has been driven up the wall by our horrible smart lights and shout out in a belly they really created a really great product with their project linus uh red and blue series switches um that we had a small tiff with them over branding it after me without my permission but boy have they ever created a great product um so i i set it up in my daughter's room so that um the switch itself is configured to never turn on but i have a home assistant automation that watches the millimeter wave sensor and conditionally can turn it on at different brightness levels depending on how bright it is in the room already and then you can create your own sort of like timer based automations in the case of those of the like the room lights i've just got it on a timer such that if it doesn't detect um a person for i think i have it set to like 10 minutes or something like that then it just kind of turns off on its own.

1:45:03Luke Lafreniere:That way Home Assistant doesn't have to run that automation. It can just run right on the switch. But there's like another just AEO Tech smart light in there that doesn't have that level of sophistication in its controller. So I'm just like, I'm finally learning this stuff. It's taken me forever of having a Home Assistant house to like really dig in and figure it out for myself. But you can set an automation there where it's just like, hey, when this light turns on, start this timer. When this timer goes off, you know, and I haven't done this yet but you can be like turn this light off and also maybe play on this speaker the clip of go to bed you know if it's been on for two hours it's like hey you've read enough tonight go to bed or you know whatever right like obviously no kid's going to listen to a recorded message over the pa but um it's neat right the closer i can get to like an in-house jarvis that all runs locally the my the more my life will be exactly the same but i'll have fun doing it yeah fair enough if that kind of makes sense yeah yeah

1:46:07Luke Lafreniere:what now are you arguing with people in float plane chat no no no i just don't know where to

1:46:12Linus Sebastian:go that's like a positive story um aliexpress was discreetly tracking users by playing audio by using the web audio api aliexpress aliexpress has been silently measuring sawtooth waves to fingerprint devices. A developer caught the tracking after encountering issues with multi-point Bluetooth headphones while surfing AliExpress. A little digging around found differences in the device's signal processing were taken advantage of to identify hardware without user knowledge or consent. This isn't a new fingerprinting technique. In fact, it's actually rather dated. Browsers have been blocking it for years.

1:46:51Linus Sebastian:AliExpress appears to be using a shotgun approach for tracking, implementing scripts that measure a list of fingerprinting techniques and hoping that some slip through.

1:47:04Luke Lafreniere:Why is this necessary? Why is this like, why does this need to be done?

1:47:11Linus Sebastian:Oh, it's, it's, I knew there was so many, but is there actually the list here? Oh, the, wow, there is. I can sell lots of screwdrivers.

1:47:18Luke Lafreniere:Okay. Without doing any of that. in fact we can sell lots of all kinds of things we've got backpacks and you know slings and look we've even got hats you can buy a hat right now this float plane baseball cap look at it isn't it beautiful and there will be no it was built beautiful there will be no random microphone sounds like okay what do you what do you got there what do you got there seriously oh yeah device pixel ratio i mean some of these are just like stuff i don't even mind them grabbing um like resolution and browser that i'm using this is actually stuff that websites need to know very useful for devs also usable for other things oh yeah buddy nice motion and orientation properties commonly associated with browser automation huh fascinating i've also heard of like mouse movements because if somebody's using a shared computer you can identify the user yeah by by how they handle the cursor yeah yeah dude i'll never forget this one kid in the computer lab when i was in like grade 10 there was like this little grade 8 kid and the way that he just like snapped to exactly like the button that he was pressing i was like that's an fps gamer so accurate it's crazy this is on like windows me man anyway always be clicking heads yeah buddy that's a guy who turns off most accelerations yeah buddy okay what do you mean there's no good news this is cool graphene os a privacy and security forward version of android that strips google out by default is breaking out of its pixel only era with official support coming to Motorola phones in 2027, starting with a flagship and eventually expanding even to the Razer Fold and Razer Ultra.

1:49:12Luke Lafreniere:The current 2026 Razers don't make the cut, unfortunately, because they lack some of the hardware security that Graphene OS requires. Pixel support isn't going away either. Graphene OS still plans to support the Pixel 11 lineup, even as it broadens its horizons to include Motorola. So our discussion question here is, what do you think of Graphene OS? And And Linus, has your opinion shifted since the LTT we did about it? No, I don't think it's really shifted. I haven't taken another crack at it, but I would be very open to it. I think that it was headed in a really exciting direction, and broadening their hardware support can only make me more excited about Graphene OS.

1:49:53Luke Lafreniere:Graphene OS one year later. I'd be totally down. Would be really cool. I'd want to do it on a Motorola phone. Yeah. Motorola's latest fold absolutely blew me away when I did the short circuit on it. I was like, I haven't thought about Motorola in 10 years. And all of a sudden they've got this phone that just like looks great, feels great, seems to run great.

1:50:14Linus Sebastian:I have not watched this short circuit. Maybe I should check it out. I'm feeling kind of done with Pixels, but I don't like the Samsung, whatever it's called, operating system. It's always kind of just annoyed me. I like the more i also understand there's no such thing as stock android but i'm like like the pixely style stocky kind of style don't make me start another controversy over stock android again

1:50:38Luke Lafreniere:i couldn't believe that one that was like i think i i would have that at least in my top three of nothing burger controversies definitely up but people were real mad about it yeah hilarious i'm gonna go home and format that sony for you so you can try it i keep forgetting and i'm so I am so sorry. Dan, you've had ADHD your whole life. So surely you must know. Set an alarm for 11.30pm to format that phone for Luke. I use my calendar.

1:51:14Luke Lafreniere:Set an alarm for Monday morning at 8am to bring that phone for Luke.

1:51:19Linus Sebastian:That's the flow, Dan. He's going to get reminders for this. That's the flow. And he's going to show up with some random phone. yeah it'll be like an HTC One Mini I don't know what this is for I just I had some note to do this my phone told me

1:51:31Luke Lafreniere:to do it past Linus must have had a reason for creating this format Sony done oh man I'm so I was only diagnosed rather recently actually that doesn't change the fact that you lived with it your whole life I've never had a real job well I mean before

1:51:51Linus Sebastian:this one I mean Oh, man. In my defense, there's two topics, two tiny short topics at the very bottom of the graph that, like, could be seen as positive.

1:52:02Luke Lafreniere:Graph?

1:52:03Linus Sebastian:The doc?

1:52:04Luke Lafreniere:Wow. You mean the doc that is, now that everything is collapsed, this long? No, you couldn't possibly have found that.

1:52:10Linus Sebastian:Now that it's collapsed is not fair.

1:52:14Luke Lafreniere:It was collapsed before you looked for that topic.

1:52:17Linus Sebastian:Also, I've been lazy about my collapsing. Yes, I know. I collapsed them all for you. No, it doesn't always sink. oh i've noticed this is very very strange sporadic there's there's something on google docs as well where you can like expand and contract not not collapsing sections like this but like individual like spoiler headings and it is it is not server side

1:52:39Luke Lafreniere:but sometimes it is but sometimes it is there's definitely ones that are collapsed that i didn't do very strange i okay we had an all hands meeting recently yeah and i like a hundred percent Kanye'd him. I was like, I'm going to let you finish, but because Luke was talking about... You know, you did this last time too, right? Did I? Yeah. That's hilarious. You know what? Now it's a tradition. Now I'm going to have to do it every time. So Luke was talking about how don't worry, everything's going to be okay, but we are going to have to look for some efficiencies in our software subscriptions. So there could be some tools that, you know, we're not able to continue to pay for subscriptions for.

1:53:20Luke Lafreniere:Especially if they're like maybe partially redundant or whatever else like right now we pay for slack teams and google

1:53:28Linus Sebastian:chat for the same people which is crazy not just teams office 365 yeah okay so anyway anyway anyway

1:53:34Luke Lafreniere:anyway so i was like i'm gonna let you finish but i think luke is being too sunshine and rainbows about this we are going to have to save money on software i seriously want to look at like

1:53:53Linus Sebastian:self-hosted it's like but like you can self-host chat the the thing is when there's a problem there are some services that it's totally fine if they go down

1:54:07Luke Lafreniere:and there's other ones where it's like not we will not be able to do anything if something's

1:54:13Linus Sebastian:going critically wrong with the servers we can't talk to ourselves which is like oh yeah yikes yeah um it's there's certain things that i just like don't really want but like next cloud for

1:54:29Luke Lafreniere:instance don't they offer the ability to host it for you as well but then that's not self that's

1:54:34Linus Sebastian:literally not self-hosted. You just said self-hosted. I'm only talking about self-hosting.

1:54:39Luke Lafreniere:I know, but I think you can self-host or not self-host some things about it. So we could take essential things and have them not self-hosted. I actually have not looked into their pricing either. Like, I have no idea what they cost. Next Cloud Talk here. What is this? I don't know. No cookies today. I'm not in the mood. Why Next Cloud Talk? blah blah blah blah blah talk comparison give me a price I hate that this has been normalized like how much does it cost just tell me what is this is this supposed to be their logo

1:55:22Linus Sebastian:stream to

1:55:23Luke Lafreniere:YouTube oh my god who cares okay okay okay oh lordy price give me a get a quote like come on man oh you i have to fill it like a whole thing oh i hate modern websites man

1:55:51Luke Lafreniere:but i i feel i feel just kind of i feel kind of done with paying microsoft I don't know about Google I don't know if I can

1:56:02Linus Sebastian:You're still gonna do it Excel We can get away from almost all of it There is a path I will say The rest of the IT team does not agree with me I'm just gonna put that out there But I will say The route that I would like to go Is just Google Workspace No Slack And this is crazy, but it saves a lot of money. Google Workspace, no Slack, no Office 365, Excel desktop for the people that need it. Accounting, maybe a few others. They have to like write a proposal for why they need it. Other than accounting. I'm not going to make them do that. I already understand. But maybe other ones, sure, we have to do something.

1:56:47Linus Sebastian:And then we can look at them and be like, you could probably do that in Sheets. Go away. i think a lot of people think they need excel and totally don't i think that's true i don't think that's true for everyone no no no like not accounting i will defend accounting's use of excel till the end of the earth but the other ones i don't know there might be other people who actually do need it but i don't know um there's a reason your it team doesn't agree with you yeah it's single sign on and and like a couple other things that are that are nice and good but there are also giant companies and more complicated companies than us that don't have fit so and costs must come down it's not an option dude so much of his uh his presentation at the quarterly

1:57:37Luke Lafreniere:all hands was just like how much more things cost today than they did six months or a year ago yeah It was like crazy because obviously...

1:57:47Linus Sebastian:Almost every service is coming to us and saying, please give double digit increase amount more.

1:57:52Luke Lafreniere:By the way, this is not a voluntary request. Gib now. Yeah. And like we've talked about it on WAN Show and off WAN Show because it's the kind of thing that we talk about. But seeing it all there at once, like a wham, wham, wham, wham, I'm just like, somebody stop the ride, I want to get off. it's rough like how much our standard issue laptops went up it's crazy like just crazy man i i made me miss the days when we were such a small company that we could just like do a few laptop unboxings when the editors needed to work

1:58:32Linus Sebastian:stations you know somebody got hired time to do a laptop unboxing yeah yeah yeah no i agree with you I agree with you. And like, there's a lot of usage things as well where people will, like if people didn't need more than, we upgrade the laptops from 16 to 32. Is that right, Dan? Am I tripping?

1:58:52Luke Lafreniere:I don't know. I don't remember.

1:58:55Linus Sebastian:I don't do that. I can find it in my expense sheets. Okay.

1:59:01Luke Lafreniere:Aye, aye, aye.

1:59:05Luke Lafreniere:My work computer, I shouldn't say only, but it has 32 gigs of RAM and I'm running out of RAM for the project I'm working on currently. Which is kind of horrifying. Well you'll have to fill out a requisition form to get more RAM which is not a process we ever needed in the past but now that RAM costs as much as gold. I will be dealing with it because there's many other people who actually need the RAM. I don't need more for one project. I mean we do have RAM. I'm just trying to train myself

1:59:34Linus Sebastian:to be better about browser tabs. Also Google Chrome. is getting a lot less interesting in the current RAM world because, boy, it's a hog. So I've been using other browsers because I'm looking at my system usage statistics, and I'm like, man, RAM's crazy. Emma has a MacBook now. Crazy comment. She was like, this battery should last freaking forever. And I'm like, yeah. And she's like, it's not at all. So she looked into battery drain usage and it was reporting Chrome as like a really brutal one. So I was like, all right, like restart it just in case. Okay, that didn't work. Try a couple of things.

2:00:21Linus Sebastian:Okay, that didn't work. Okay, Safari.

2:00:24Luke Lafreniere:You know what's really funny? Just say no to Chrome. Is every time I've done a Mac like Switch thing, I have either tried to use it or I've used Safari the entire time. and I've had people kind of like dunk on me for it and I was like, but I thought Safari is like the Mac experience and I've never had issues with battery drain so...

2:00:46Linus Sebastian:Chrome was a problem. People are like, Firefox! I know, I use Firefox personally leave me alone, okay? What I knew she would have installed immediately right there to test and make sure it worked was Safari. So she flipped and it worked instantly. I will try to win the Firefox battle over time. It takes time. It's like the conversation we had earlier in the stream about how you, you know, you buy her a mouse, then you try to introduce her to different games you might be interested in. She wore, wears currently an old Firefox shirt I had for many years. I think I can win her over. But she's just got to use Safari first.

2:01:23Luke Lafreniere:Speaking of something that is completely unrelated to the conversation that we're having right now, we've, the design team has been trying to convince me for quite some time to do more just like kitschy cutesy stuff like um i forget what they're called the little things that um sit on the back yeah um whatever those are monitor something ers hippers is that what they're called hippers i think not a clue um anyway it's something that they've been like pushing me to do for a long time and i've just like i've struggled to find you know a design that we can all agree is because i hate just manufacturing junk right unless i think it's really cool and then you can kind of convince me i've just i just i haven't seen something that i've felt is really aligned with our brand decor sure so it's been hard to find something that i feel is aligned with our brand and uh and cute enough like it's got to be both of those things and i think dan has seen it already okay that's an interesting reaction sorry now you're good i mean you had no way of knowing i was going to turn the camera on i just messaged you um something to tease wow teams is not working oh did you did you not get it just let me refresh seriously I did use a weird share interface that I have not seen before because I was sharing within teams whoops wrong Dan oh crap did I send it to the wrong Dan twice then teams is such that would have been on me actually if I did that I've crashed it on teams oh okay yeah that fits the brand i'm okay with this no i sent it to the wrong dan actually it was a this was nope this was a this was a user error issue okay this is a joke no that was me i gotta own it i gotta own it that was on me sure blame me mr besser this is a cat i'd like to make that very clear a cat clutching the world um it would come with a little carabiner

2:03:49Linus Sebastian:I was thinking the other day. I could turn them into earrings. I used to wear that Firefox shirt all the time. What? I'm not talking about Firefox right now. No, I mean, neither. Totally. Well, I am, but I know that you're not.

2:04:01Luke Lafreniere:But it's meant to be like a little bag charm. It's a cat. Oh, that's cool. Yeah. Earrings. Flaming cat on Waterworld. Maybe we'll call it that. Waterworld is also trademarked. Flaming cat on Liquidworld. That is good. You're good. Nice. Thanks, Dan. You're very welcome. My lawyer over there. Anyway, sorry. What were you talking about?

2:04:21Linus Sebastian:I was like, maybe I should get a new Firefox shirt. Because I used to like wearing my Firefox shirt. I saw they have a kit shirt, which is not my ideal style. I'd rather it was smaller in the corner. But my original Firefox shirt was also a big logo in the middle. What I can't tell is... Oh, no. This one's small. Okay. I didn't want that on my back.

2:04:44Linus Sebastian:No one is on your tail. But I didn't want a big tail. I just... What, you don't want to lean into the furriness?

2:04:52Luke Lafreniere:It's just not for me.

2:04:53Linus Sebastian:Why not? Why not? It's just not for me. Why not? Well, I wouldn't be a fox.

2:05:05Luke Lafreniere:NVIDIA is rumored to be set to acquire Hugging Face for$12.9 billion. Hugging Face is one of the most widely used platforms by AI developers to collaborate, test, and share mostly open source tools and models, and was recently at the center of a hacking incident that their CEO blamed on engineering mistakes and said his company used an NVIDIA version of a Chinese open model to resolve it. He told CNBC earlier this month, AI cybersecurity is going to become a huge market in the U.S. and around the world. As of Thursday night, neither company has confirmed the talks. And our discussion question here is, do you think this acquisition will stifle development on non-NVIDIA platforms?

2:05:48Luke Lafreniere:I mean, I don't know, man. There's been some missteps, but I really thought that Microsoft's acquisition of GitHub was going to lead to... Yeah, all it led to was platform instability. Yeah. Like, that was not what I saw coming. Yeah, me neither, to be honest. Definitely problems, but it's not like all of a sudden, you know development that microsoft doesn't like or something is like stifled um with that said nvidia's history of um openness i'd say is is worse than microsoft's um

2:06:29Luke Lafreniere:like like this is the ai space is moving so fast that i almost just wonder like i don't i don't actually see any reason why another hugging face, you know, kissing ass or whatever wouldn't just spring up overnight.

2:06:48Linus Sebastian:Kissingass.com? Sounds like a really different thing. Actually like a professional website. Don't look it up! Oh my god. It's gotta exist. You have to know.

2:07:03Luke Lafreniere:Namecheap.com. Um We might be able to help you get it Yeah, okay Well, let's find out what it is You ready? No, don't do it Don't share screen

2:07:18Linus Sebastian:Oh, whoops, I accidentally almost didn't share it

2:07:23Luke Lafreniere:Okay Yep, that was exactly As bad as you'd think Do not go there Holy

2:07:37Luke Lafreniere:Don't actually though if you are at work do not What are we still gonna post videos on the hub talking about this

2:07:51Linus Sebastian:Wrong actually pressed it

2:07:55Luke Lafreniere:I was trying to scare you but then I but then I pressed the wrong button. Thank goodness for that close Thank goodness for that cloud flare thing because what loaded I don't know saved your ass I don't know if you saw that out of the corner of your eye. No, I did it was

2:08:13Linus Sebastian:You would because it would have been on your screen

2:08:16Luke Lafreniere:Not safe for work. My hand was hovering over camel only but I didn't get to it in time

2:08:22Linus Sebastian:um yeah so amazing don't link don't link it are you don't link it doing

2:08:31Luke Lafreniere:how do i delete this delete message come on man yes really okay geez you guys don't don't go there oh man yeah we're not even after dark what's going on here we've had a wet t-shirt We almost had an oopsie. Yeah, that would have been a significant oopsie. Apple Silicon is... Oh, Apple announced the new Mac Mini and Mac Studio. The Mac Mini now has the new M6 chip as well as the M5 Pro, while the Mac Studio can be equipped with the M5 Max and M5 Ultra. The announcements around the new devices seem heavily focused on AI development and AI tools. Dude, the Mac Minis are so good. Elijah writes, my fave part was the slide that said an ai powerhouse but definitely looks like something else i wonder if that was on that website you went to the top of the line config for the mac studio comes late october with an eye-watering 512 gigs of unified memory d-ram prices are hitting apple as well though with the new base mac mini getting a$300 higher starting price for their M6 entry chip.

2:09:47Luke Lafreniere:Our discussion question is, last year we made a video about the Mac Mini being one of the best price-to-performance computers on the market, anywhere, from anyone. Is that still true? I mean, given everyone else's adjusted pricing, then I want to do a video on it. I want to get my hands on it. It's the only Mac... Actually not true. I think both the mini and the studio are pretty exciting to me now the studio for like local AI stuff and the Mac mini just for like a good computer that's small and quiet and powerful and probably going to be supported for a really long time. We've got just a couple more topics and then I'll do your sponsors and then we'll go to after dark Dan.

2:10:29Luke Lafreniere:Sound good? Twitter has sicked its lawyers on knitter and X cancel tools to scrape and mirror tweets. Knitter, an open source front end that lets people browse Twitter and read tweets without using Twitter directly, has been sent a cease and desist letter. The letter alleges that Knitter violated Twitter's rules and scraped data from the platform. Okay, cool. Good. Knitter's maintainer, Ziduse, has paused work while seeking legal advice. Knitter going down also took out the website XCancel alongside it. xCancel relied on Knitter to mirror tweets and Twitter feeds, and it was taken offline after receiving its own letter from Twitter.

2:11:07Luke Lafreniere:Twitter previously killed Knitter with API changes in 2024, but the project eventually bounced back, so a return from the dead isn't completely out of the question here again. Our discussion question, though, is how likely is it that moves like this will actually force users of Knitter and xCancel to sign up for Twitter? I have seen some communities that are very dedicated to not giving any direct traffic to the Twitter website. I really don't see how they would suddenly start giving them any traffic. But maybe, I mean, maybe they'll cave just like Reddit users did.

2:11:42Linus Sebastian:Have I talked to you about this before? I've been complaining for a long time about how it's like, I hated Twitter, I hate X, I am almost like mourning its death because it's very difficult to get in contact with other people now because there was like one platform that everyone was on. Like Instagram is kind of fragment-y a little bit. Everything else is kind of fragment-y. Discord doesn't have discoverability. Yep. All this kind of stuff. But Twitter, X, whatever did. You know what platform it's been forcing me to? Hold on. Facebook.

2:12:16Luke Lafreniere:No. Okay. Well, it can't be that bad then.

2:12:21Linus Sebastian:There's a keyboard shortcut for it. oh no what is everyone else also on where you can actually find them to find other creators I've been using LinkedIn control shift alt windows they all have LinkedIn

2:12:40Luke Lafreniere:they do don't they

2:12:42Linus Sebastian:everybody has LinkedIn it's horrible it's horrible anytime I'm ever on like the homepage thing I just want to puke. I hate the things that generally get posted on LinkedIn. But like it's been the one way I've been able to find people.

2:13:04Luke Lafreniere:I'm going to say I'm open to work.

2:13:11Luke Lafreniere:Nice. It asked me if I'm open to work. Sure, why not? I mean, yeah, sure, why not? oh it's going to notify me if it's going to notify me if founder positions open up no thanks i don't need to start a post right now um how does that work they just want you to be an investor i guess and also work no no it's just that that's my job title so it's looking for you know just like if i was a systems analyst or whatever yeah um man just ah this ah this platform the female audience says i was going to say blue sky yeah

2:13:45Linus Sebastian:No. No. So butt. Blue Sky has some people, but it doesn't have like everybody. And x slash Twitter, whatever, had everybody. And the only platform that I know of right now that has everybody and you can search people. But it's so ass. It's terrible.

2:14:07Luke Lafreniere:Hi, my name is Blah. I'm the CEO and founder of Blah Blah Blah Blah. Based on the information listed in your LinkedIn profile, we think your achievements and success could make you an ideal candidate to publish a book with us. Would you be interested in learning more about the possibility of becoming a bold, published author with the world's largest...

2:14:24Linus Sebastian:There is an insane amount of garbage on it. And I think people can pay to end up in your inbox. Yeah, that's what that was. Yeah. Which is insane. Ew. But this is with a bunch of people leaving X slash Twitter. This is the only thing that I know of that I can get certain parts of my job done with.

2:14:45Luke Lafreniere:Everybody acts really nice, though. Do they? Yeah, I think they're pretty professional on LinkedIn. Although compared to like Twitter. Yeah, I think it depends on the bar was like about four layers deep into hell, though.

2:14:59Linus Sebastian:So yeah. Yeah. Don't talk about my racism app that way. The thing with LinkedIn is it kind of depends on what you mean by nice because people will go on there and talk about, I don't know, horrible things. I'm a business runner professional person talking to only business running professional people. We don't talk about the lowly individual contributors here type speak. There's a lot of that on LinkedIn. I'm sorry. I spent so little time on it.

2:15:31Luke Lafreniere:You caught me completely off guard with that. What?

2:15:33Linus Sebastian:No, seriously, like people will talk about like, oh, these are the best ways that you can replace all your stupid Titsuckling employees with AI get rid of those losers

2:15:44Luke Lafreniere:So what I can have titsuckling AI instead taking all of my money instead of people

2:15:49Linus Sebastian:So this is what I mean by like it kind of depends what you mean by good Is there there's sure a lot of not good on

2:15:55Luke Lafreniere:Anthropic would be just as happy to take all my money as Dan would

2:16:03Luke Lafreniere:yeah you get those like crazy manager posts or like this is what i'm talking about how you can exploit all your workers this is what i mean i've been in hr for so long and i hate all my subordinates and it's like this is what i'm talking about but it's not anonymous it's so i

2:16:16Linus Sebastian:know that's what makes it so cool that's why linkedin is like awesome this is why this is one of the reasons why i hate linkedin is because like i said they they act like they're talking in a vacuum with just a bunch of other and right the evil blood-sucking everybody thinks like i do and it's such a crazy circle jerk because oftentimes they kind of are it's sick of course there's a

2:16:39Luke Lafreniere:subreddit is there really linkedin lunatics yeah yeah okay wait it will not let me access even old reddit without logging in oh yeah that's new what oh right we talked about this on wang show okay well then, f*** you, I'm just not going to look at it. Get wrecked, you served me zero ads. Way to go, Reddit. You won, I guess. Hey, but in other news, CPU-Z v3 is here. You know, CPU-Z. This is the biggest update to the program in more than 24 years, according to Tom's Hardware, and adds more than 100 health checks, built-in stress testing, and extreme overclocking, effective clock tracking. the validation system has been reworked into three modes standard advanced and extreme overclocking so users can more easily find what they're working for and uh our discussion question is how does it feel to know you've been using a utility for a quarter century oh yeah i forgot we used to use aida 64 before that yeah cpuz man rock on you glorious cpuz MFs-ers.

2:17:49Luke Lafreniere:I cannot scroll this page on Tom's hardware. Tom's hardware, please stop. I am trying to look at your website. Ooh, validated CPU frequencies with a five-second load with a one-shot measurement. Oh!

2:18:08Luke Lafreniere:V2 removed all load and most internal checks, which increased the risk of validation not validating. So this is really for like extreme geeks. Oh, oh, I love this. Checking for potential hardware issues under heavy load, significantly extended benchmarking tool that even measure storage performance, advanced sensors based on hardware monitor have been incorporated to monitor temperatures, frequencies, fan speeds, and more. So cool. And that is our last actual topic today. And it's time for us to switch to after dark, which sponsors after we talk about our sponsors. Hey, infinite cable sponsored the show.

2:18:43Luke Lafreniere:We love those guys. Shout out Infinite Cables. Infinite Cables is a huge supplier of all kinds of cables, from networking and audio to power cables and USB chargers. They helped us out with most of the cables we needed for Whale Land, on top of plenty of stuff that we use for the labs and our studio. They're located here in Canada, and it's always nice to work with fellow Canadians, but they actually ship anywhere in North America. Their in-house production team can even manufacture a lot of custom cables, like fiber optics and coax. It doesn't matter if you're an IT professional, a hobbyist, a member of a school board, or if you're just an average person who needs a right angle C2C charger, Infinite Cables has you covered.

2:21:26Linus Sebastian:we do this transition what's up uh can you go to the the cpu uh zv3 website real quick yep and then share your screen. I want you to do it so you can poke around. I have it up on my screen, but I want you to be able to poke around. Okay. Oh, this isn't the page I landed on.

2:21:47Luke Lafreniere:Oh, okay. Sorry, did I do something wrong?

2:21:52Linus Sebastian:Oh, I landed on the validator. Yeah. Valid.cpid.com. Where are you on?

2:22:00Luke Lafreniere:CPCValidator v3? Oh, lordy. Weird. Introducing CPCs, yeah.

2:22:06Linus Sebastian:Why is there a different page for this?

2:22:10Luke Lafreniere:I don't know. That's a good question.

2:22:13Linus Sebastian:Look at the one I'm seeing. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. No. Yeah, I've got it now. Okay. So where did you find this? How did you get there from where you were?

2:22:22Luke Lafreniere:I don't know. Wait, did it just go? Did I ever actually click anything? I don't think I did. I think it just redirected. Wait. What? I don't remember clicking on anything.

2:22:36Luke Lafreniere:What happens if I click this? What? I'm not sure how it happened. Goodies.

2:22:48Linus Sebastian:ADHD, everyone.

2:22:57Hey,

2:22:59Luke Lafreniere:Elmore's there. Cool. Oh, look at that. you can get this hat for 50 % off at lttstore.com from the power outlet. Nice. Nice. You can get it in medium or large. And it also glows UV reactive green. Look at how stylish Nicole looks in it. Very. Trey stylish. All right, Dan, hit us. Sure. Should we add a little bit of light? How about these? I don't know if...

2:23:29Linus Sebastian:Oh, that did do stuff to me. Yeah, okay. It's got both of you, a little bit of side profile.

2:23:33Luke Lafreniere:Yeah. It also looks better on probably these monitors. Love it. Good evening, boys. Good evening. Quick question for Luke. A couple of WAN shows ago, you were talking about your search for an adjustable bench for your home gym. That's not really a question. Which one did you end up buying, and why this one? Oh, man. Can I find it right now? I thought you knew the name of it.

2:23:56Linus Sebastian:It's from that expensive bougie brand, right? Yes. And website coming soon. okay what uh it was an Irwin I can think of another

2:24:11Luke Lafreniere:website that's coming soon

2:24:15Linus Sebastian:don't post it I can't I still can't believe someone did that their website seems to be down but it was Irwin Fitness um I watched Gluck Jim's video on the Irwin Fitness bench and I really liked it. I was trying to buy Canadian. There's a bit of a trade war going on right now. So I was trying to buy Canadian. There aren't a ton of brands that make benches in Canada. There's a few brands that just import benches, often from the States, interestingly enough, and rebadge them. But I wanted to buy Canadian. These seem to be Canadian and like made by people in Canada, import the metal, weld the bench yourself type stuff.

2:25:00Linus Sebastian:And I was like, okay, and swallowed the pretty expensive cost. It's a great bench. Very happy with the final product. Cool. Not stoked that it took over three months to get to me.

2:25:13Luke Lafreniere:I wonder how many little choices like that have been made. I don't know. Over the last little while.

2:25:22Linus Sebastian:Just doing what I could, but yeah. I've been trying to buy Canadian groceries. When I bought that, I tried to buy a Canadian one. I said, tried to. I did. I don't know. I've been trying to consider that when I can moving forward. I never did before at all. No, but there's a lot of Canadian companies that are genuinely suffering right now. I think it was like 40 ,000 jobs lost recently or something because of tariff issues and stuff. it's like yeah if you want your fellow countrymen to not lose their jobs as often if you also can afford to yeah maybe consider doing these types of things but sometimes it's tough this bench was really expensive it's not super reasonable for a vast amount of people even if they're in the market to buy something for a home gym which is already a privileged position

2:26:12Luke Lafreniere:yeah you have a space to put it yeah you can afford all the other things that are going to go

2:26:16Linus Sebastian:it yeah so like but even then it's still expensive so like it's yeah i'm not i'm not you know trying to oh you must do this thing but like yikes i um people up here like it's i support us fighting the fight but people up here are are suffering in a lot of cases

2:26:40Luke Lafreniere:the unfortunate part is that a lot of our southern neighbors are suffering too 100 % yeah and it just feels yeah it's very unnecessary there's certain states

2:26:50Linus Sebastian:that have a lot of like traffic from Canadians tourism or yeah fair enough tourism or like I know it would trade for sure I know it was super common like my my brother used to very often drive over the border when he was relatively low on gas fill up his truck with groceries fill his tank of gas come back over the border yep no Canadian balked that no that was just normal that was super normal i did that all the time tons of people

2:27:17Luke Lafreniere:did that that's like only place i bought my gas yeah i worked right next to the border i saved loads of money i have never done that since i will pay extra and there's a huge chance that that was

2:27:31Linus Sebastian:canadian oil refined down in the states which is totally cool it was all totally fine uh and now it's like yikes yeah and there's there's states that are very you know pro canadians pro canada that are that are getting owned by this and all of canada is getting owned by this it's not it's not fun anyways we don't need to keep going into that that's the bench i bought i don't remember the exact model it was an irwin fitness bench i can't view their website right now so i can't answer it for you but gluck uh gluck's gym has a video on it um he has a video on the ab 1.0 Maybe that's it. I don't remember exactly what video it was.

2:28:12But yeah.

2:28:14Linus Sebastian:Another one for Luke. Luke!

2:28:16Luke Lafreniere:I'm a Floatplane first timer. How do I get background play working on iOS? Oh, fun.

2:28:22Linus Sebastian:Say hi to your birds from me. You don't. Sorry. That's the fun part. The app development stuff has been tough. For the entire service of Floatplane, we have two senior developers and one junior developer. For what it's worth, they're really good. Yeah, it's just not the staff you need to do the things that people are talking about. That being said... Aren't you pretty close to... It's not live yet, but we have... Announcing an interesting thing? I'll say it now. Okay. Which I normally wouldn't, but I'll say it now. We have an Android TV app submitted to the Android Play Store. It's going through the process.

2:29:05Linus Sebastian:So theoretically, it will be coming soon. Um, it's, it's, here's another fun part. You know what? You know what, float planers? I'm going to, I'm going to trust you with something. Okay. He's trusting you. Let me know if you break it. But if you go to floatplane.com and this is my, my favorite part is no one crawled this. This has existed for so long, but if you go to floatplane.com, I just type a little slash on the end of it and put in TV. There it is.

2:29:32Luke Lafreniere:Nice.

2:29:33Linus Sebastian:Um, on a, on a computer, you can use your arrow keys to control it. like you would a TV app. Theoretically, if your TV has a browser on it, you could go to fullplane.com slash TV and log in. And it should act pretty okay. This is a 0.0.0 release of the TV app. So breakage, highly possible. Let us know if you have issues. But yeah, so app coming to Android TV, theoretically apps coming to the other platforms but things get really weird like roku for some insane reason has their own language which is just absurd uh and as far as my understanding goes they also don't support a browser so we can't do it that way which is just so annoying but a bunch of different tvs we should officially be on the on the play store um relatively soon and the soonest will be android tv cool yeah unfortunately this one's question got caught

2:30:35Luke Lafreniere:off but it was too cool to ignore hey dll reactor operator here possibly will be the first person to bring the nuclear screwdriver into a nuclear facility that's cool nuclear industry is heavily reliant on analog hardware do y 'all that's oh that's all i got unfortunately and it just petered out there hey but man that is so cool well that was a banger opening for that com We need to increase the character limit. Might break everything, though. What's up? Oh, just Luke's watching Short Circuit live on the show right now. At least he's not playing Minecraft. Yeah, that was worse. Hi, from Australia.

2:31:21Luke Lafreniere:Do you think the social media ban for teenagers in places like Australia or the UK has been a success or a massive flop? It seems like it's just taught a generation of teens how to use a VPN. For that reason alone, I consider it to be at least a non-zero success. I think that anything that pushes people to troubleshoot more and learn problem-solving skills and be more tech-savvy is pretty cool. As for, you know, whether it's actually effective in getting teenagers to use social media less, I really doubt it. but uh hey teaching them to troubleshoot more at least activated their brain for that five minutes to learn how to use a vpn so that's something yep

2:32:12Luke Lafreniere:di3 happy says well i guess they all used ai for that i choose to live in a world where they talked to another teenager who explained to them how to do it on their flip phone which they apparently started using they used t9 dialing to to chat about it the goggles they do nothing but the nuclear screwdriver is so useful luke mentioned liking polyphia one day secret metal fan curious what music all three of you gents listen to on the

2:32:42Linus Sebastian:regular it's not a secret i told you i like polyphia um well you can like a band and not be a fan of like an entire genre oh i don't know like although you kind of would probably need to

2:32:58Luke Lafreniere:metal music.

2:32:59Linus Sebastian:I don't listen to metal music all the time, but I like some metal music for sure.

2:33:03Luke Lafreniere:Yeah. I think my weirdest guilty pleasure has to be like Christian Slop. Some of it's really good. Some of it's really catchy. Oh my god, it's like so good.

2:33:13Linus Sebastian:Reliant K the other day. Oh my gosh, I'm sorry. Dan got really excited by that. Everybody sleeps on it! I feel like that's like the most excited Dan's gotten about anything in a while. We don't get to talk about music ever. um reliant k reliant k no one reacted that you don't know what reliant k i've heard of them i couldn't name a single song though isn't that a serial reliant k used to be like huge in my circles when i was in in the like middle and high school um fantastic anyways yeah what sorry what

2:33:49Luke Lafreniere:was the question just give me some audio adrenaline and then i'm good i don't know yeah it's like yeah it's just like mainstreamy just formulaic pop and rock music that is just like very uh very uplifting inspirational lyrics it's like yeah okay yeah

2:34:10Linus Sebastian:um sorry what was the question dan hasn't answered it yet what was the question oh

2:34:23Luke Lafreniere:That is such a bullshit, cop-out, f***ing nonsense answer. How dare you? I was also muted. He said a little bit of everything. I said a smattering of everything. Smattering, smattering. Go smatter yourself. Like, earworm right now is by Everything Everything. It's Pizza Boy. I'm a huge Kinect Zapata fan. It's like the thing that makes me excited about music. And I haven't felt that in a very, very long time. Absolute legend.

2:34:59Linus Sebastian:I've recently been into Rally House. Oh, thank you.

2:35:03Luke Lafreniere:Yeah. Rally House is incredible. Yeah. I also like myself some 100 Gex.

2:35:09Linus Sebastian:Yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah. 100 Gex is great. There's an artist I recently got into as well called Green Tea Peng. specifically the song Stuck in the Middle I really like that song I like some of their other stuff as well but I really like that song Why don't you listen to the whole thing then? Ah, yeah Pretty good Gotta wait for him to get it Nucky Jawson is a deep cut for me Cerismo

2:35:42Luke Lafreniere:Oh, there's another one who I absolutely enjoy I think I was there like, oh, Starjunk95. I think I was there like number one, like top percent. Nice. Vara.

2:35:57Linus Sebastian:Buggo. Young Scrolls is a fun dip for me. I fairly recently got into a kick of, which I cycle through this every once in a while, but just going hard 100%. If I'm listening to music, I'm only listening to this Tragically Hip for like a month. every once in a while that'll just snipe my brain that's bare naked ladies for me

2:36:18Luke Lafreniere:yeah sure like it's a random thing that we heard so much because we're canadian and they like have to play canadian music for like 30 of the time or something so nobody else really knows or cares about these songs but it's like another postcard with chimpanzees yeah tragically hit 49th parallel

2:36:38Linus Sebastian:It just is burned into my skull in a good way. I like it

2:36:42Luke Lafreniere:Yeah, Lewis Cole carpenter brute to be clear another postcard not actually one of my favorite songs from them just It was just they got so much play on the radio because I guess there was like no other Canadian music that was current for them to play at that time

2:36:59Linus Sebastian:I wonder what else what else what is in my like?

2:37:03Luke Lafreniere:and by smattering of everything I actually do mean smattering of everything like it's I'm not one of those people's like I don't like this genre trying to find the rap guy like Danny Danny something Danny Brown I think is his name Justice saw them live anyway let's move on because everything means a lot hello LLD thank you for keeping me entertained at my jewelry repair job. Oh, I did a casting workshop this week. That was fun. I guess we could talk about that later, but carry on. Luke, what chicken or beef recipes are your favorites? I've started going to the gym and I need some easy protein meals ideas.

2:37:46Luke Lafreniere:Meat plus heat. Oh, if you're going to the gym and you need easy meal ideas.

2:37:51Linus Sebastian:Chicken. Imagine buying beef in current year. Think, stick with me for a second. Chicken. with not a lot of rice, a decent amount of something. Broccoli. Probably broccoli. Probably broccoli.

2:38:10Luke Lafreniere:An entire bag of baby carrots. Hold on.

2:38:12Linus Sebastian:Keep sticking with me here.

2:38:13Luke Lafreniere:I'm listening.

2:38:14Linus Sebastian:Chicken. Don't forget to add heat. That's important. You don't want to die. And then like just a lot of Frank's Red. Specifically, Frank's Red Extra Hot. If you go with normal Frank's Red or Frank's Red Extra Hot, The ingredients are water, vinegar, salt, and cayenne pepper.

2:38:36Luke Lafreniere:He blew my mind when he showed me that this is zero calories.

2:38:38Linus Sebastian:It is actually zero calories. Another cheat for you, although I don't think it goes great with chicken. I've done it. Don't love it. Mustard.

2:38:47Luke Lafreniere:He blew my mind again when he told me it is also zero calories.

2:38:51Linus Sebastian:Mustard is also zero calories. If you want to be gym bro, your options are mustard and zero calorie hot sauce. Luckily, Frank's Red is zero calorie hot sauce. As long as you don't go for the barbecue or whatever else. You got to go original or extra hot. Those are your options. And if you get tired of the Frank's Red, a genuine solution is more Frank's Red.

2:39:19Luke Lafreniere:Right, just add more. Just burn. Yeah, and just get tolerant of it. Okay, cool. Thank you for that. Couldn't you put like a hot pepper in it or something? Like a poblano? Because that would be a vegetable and might make it taste good. How come Jim Brose have never heard of seasoning? Frank's read of seasoning. You know what? I take it back. Okay, next question. Hi, DLL. In the car world, we have a category dubbed 05 Rich For cars that screamed rich back in 2005, but maybe not anymore. What PC accessories or peripherals do you think fit that character? I'm saying two GPUs. Oh, that's a pretty cool response.

2:40:13Luke Lafreniere:Neon. Neon for sure.

2:40:16Linus Sebastian:Neon tubes.

2:40:17Luke Lafreniere:I had a neon tube in mine for a little while. Yeah. I mean, I got to say... A mouse bungee? A turbo button.

2:40:27Linus Sebastian:Turbo button, but I want it to actually work. But you could maybe do that.

2:40:33Luke Lafreniere:Hold on. UV lighting in general, man. Two disc drives.

2:40:38Linus Sebastian:Oh, sorry. To continue on on the previous answer as well. These cable, these tubing coils.

2:40:44Luke Lafreniere:Oh, yeah. Those are so cool. Anti-kink tubing coils. We need to bring them back. Dude, I don't even think you can buy them anymore. I don't know if anybody... Well, we have the EL wire now. Of course, Primo Chill. No, Primo Chill apparently has them. Okay. Go figure. I'm getting out my credit card.

2:40:59Linus Sebastian:It might be the same stock from back then.

2:41:01Luke Lafreniere:Oh, hold on. This may not be real. Oh, it's a PC part picker. Yeah, where do I... Yeah, no, it's not a thing. I'm going to go buy some EL wire and do it up. Because I use soft black hose and I feel sad. But it's not cool.

2:41:21Luke Lafreniere:Hello, PrimoChill. Sponsored result taking a hot minute to PETG2. Oh boy, their website's dying.

2:41:32Luke Lafreniere:Well, I'd say just like bougie RGB keyboards are, like they're obviously still a thing today, but they're just like a dime a dozen now. Whereas do you remember what a huge deal it was when Corsair launched the K95.

2:41:47Linus Sebastian:That was actually insane.

2:41:48Luke Lafreniere:Yeah. Like, oh, they put, like, all the different colors of LED behind every single key. What?

2:41:58Luke Lafreniere:There's got to be something display-related that's like that, too. It's like thin bezels, you know? Like, now we just, like, take it for granted. But they're not out of fashion, either. Like, because it's... It was 2005. Yeah, I think 2000 of the year is actually arbitrary. It's more just like something that... Metro vibe. Yeah. I'm thinking 1440p. I remember somebody had like a 69, 1440p.

2:42:21Linus Sebastian:Most people I knew in 2005 had CRTs.

2:42:23Luke Lafreniere:I would say... Exactly. Aftermarket GPU coolers. Like Arctic silencers and stuff. RAM coolers?

2:42:32Linus Sebastian:Arctic silencers, dude. Yeah.

2:42:34Luke Lafreniere:Do you guys remember like... Sick. Like aftermarket GPU coolers?

2:42:40Linus Sebastian:Okay. I've had such a hard time remembering this. you might know

2:42:44Luke Lafreniere:sounds like something I would know

2:42:45Linus Sebastian:around this era-ish there was kind of two fan brands that were known as like Silent X was it Silent X?

2:42:56Luke Lafreniere:there it is the VGA silencer look at that thing oh yeah buddy oh yeah buddy you gotta be silent that's beautiful I believe this was UV reactive as well computers got boring UV reactive I'm going to go with that as my final answer Good answer

2:43:14Linus Sebastian:I want to add another answer to the question about the food thing Hold on

2:43:19Luke Lafreniere:You didn't finish asking your fan question

2:43:23Linus Sebastian:Oh yeah There was two fan brands, Noctua and one other one That were like super ultra premium Oh be quiet Oh noise blocker Gelid? That noise blocker sounds right

2:43:37Linus Sebastian:They have these like huge motors

2:43:41Luke Lafreniere:yeah it might be noise blocker oh you mean scythe maybe it was sight or were they just like pan of rebranded paniflos i don't remember you mean the ones that had the giant hubs on them right

2:43:53Linus Sebastian:i think scythe had enormous hubs i don't particularly remember scythe having enormous hubs but maybe they did um

2:44:06Luke Lafreniere:yeah i think i know what you're thinking of and i'm not sure if i've actually

2:44:11Linus Sebastian:gotten the right one they just like vanished after a while

2:44:19Luke Lafreniere:um no it wasn't vantech for sure i think i know exactly the fan type that you're talking about like you you're talking about like this style, right? With the big hub and the super swept blades. Scythe had ones like that, but I don't know.

2:44:37Linus Sebastian:I don't think it's Scythe that I'm thinking of.

2:44:39Luke Lafreniere:No, it's like an OEM. It was like Paniflose or something like that. Whoever was using fluid dynamic bearings at the time, was it Scythe?

2:44:50Luke Lafreniere:FDB Fans 2000. It was more like 2010 though, I think. Let's see if I can find anything like that.

2:44:58Linus Sebastian:Yeah. I'm going to...

2:45:00Luke Lafreniere:Yeah, it's hard to find that older stuff now. Gentle Typhoons. Yes! Yeah, that was Scythe.

2:45:11Linus Sebastian:That was Scythe? Yeah. Yeah, that was Scythe. Oh, I didn't know that. Yep. I was specifically thinking of Gentle Typhoons.

2:45:19Luke Lafreniere:Yep. Here. Yeah, there it is.

2:45:22Linus Sebastian:Crazy. They just don't have their brand on it?

2:45:25Luke Lafreniere:No, I believe it did. yeah because these were i believe these were rebranded um paniflos or something like that

2:45:37Linus Sebastian:i just remember being i was trying to tell someone about this the other day but because i couldn't think of the name gentle typhoon i couldn't uh actually bring up i could i couldn't properly explain it but it used to be such a crazy war between noctuas and gentle typhoons for like the the fancy boy fans back in the day according to ai no they were manufactured by nidec

2:45:56Luke Lafreniere:so unrelated to Paniflo fans well, it shows you what I know but yeah, they were an OEM rebrand, which is probably why Scythe's branding was not nearly as prominent on them

2:46:09Linus Sebastian:Okay, I want to go back to the food question One thing that I found particularly useful is carrots. They're kind of a lot to eat, like they're very crunchy they're very fibrous so you can eat a bunch of carrots and feel like you had a ton of food, but you didn't really actually ingest that many calories. Another thing is they didn't just ask chicken, they asked for beef as well. You can go the boy kibble route if you go beef. So you just have basically a bunch of most likely extra lean ground beef and you mix it with like a little bit of rice, maybe some cottage cheese. Something you can do to swap out the rice if you want is to go to like yams instead.

2:46:53Linus Sebastian:like there's there's different options you can have if you go the boy kibble route something emma has done which i think is it looks a little gnarly and doing the action of it is a little gnarly but it works really well uh is you get like silicon um it's a silicon tray that has like these like serving size vertical slices that is like that thing around if you looked at it vertically and then like that much depth so you think like a burrito silicon tray thing like

2:47:28Luke Lafreniere:because you can get like silicon muffin tins but it would be kind of like that is what you're talking about or is it more like a silpat that's a flat mat that has outlines it's not a flat mat

2:47:37Linus Sebastian:it has like that much depth okay it looks like an ice cube tray if your ice cubes needed to be almost the size of like a vhs but thicker and not as long yeah so that that's like people are saying super cubes hold on super I think you're right super cubes let me look into this yes perfect thank you flow paint chat so Emma has okay hold on animated thing I need to find the actual product these these but instead of soup ground beef and then whenever you want whenever you want a meal it's like modular meal prep so you have your super cube of ground beef and then whenever you want a meal prep you just squish it out yeah and you have a pre-portioned size of ground beef ready to go and you mix it with whatever you want that way you don't have to pre-cook i don't personally like a lot of cooked vegetables i prefer raw vegetables so the vegetables don't go in there but now i have ground beef that is prepped you know spiced if you want etc etc and ready to go it's silicone so it's not hopefully as horrible for you as other things could be um maybe you have a long time too maybe you have separately prepped rice maybe you have separately prepped some form of carb assuming you want it um but yeah these super cube things are super useful for uh for for meal prep they're they're fantastic because you just You can get the portion control handled, which is like wicked.

2:49:15Linus Sebastian:Another thing you can do with that is less spoilage to. Yeah. She does like frozen kale. So she'll do like, you know, a yam cut in half, throw half a yam in there, shake a bunch of frozen kale on top of it. Take a super cube of ground beef, plunk it in there, heat the bowl up and you have lunch. Super, super simple. Pun intended. this is not an ad for super cubes i didn't know they were a specific thing um but yeah that's been pretty wicked cool so there's i wanted to throw that out there as well

2:49:49Luke Lafreniere:it's so funny because it's the kind of thing that people totally do for like their pets you know like if if they're on a raw food diet or whatever they'll have like a similar type of system with you know like pre-prepped baggies and stuff but then people don't think to do it

2:50:01Linus Sebastian:for themselves yeah that was like you you walked in i was eating lunch today yeah um and that was that would have been a super cube of ground beef with kale shaked on top of it with half a yam. That was like exactly the thing I just described. It's really easy to throw together and it makes it so that you can kind of prep at one time and then you don't have this like oh god I have awoken to another day I must cook and prep three meals yet again oh no. It's like it can simplify some of that so there you go.

2:50:36Luke Lafreniere:up next i thought this was interesting linus luke and dan what is your go-to quote-unquote to center as in when you try it when you feel overwhelmed what do you do to get mental center i try to go camping for reset if this is too personal don't answer i didn't realize it but i need to exercise um i i started to notice a pattern where if i hadn't played badminton for like as soon as I got over like a week and a half or so I would just be cranky for and like there's no good explanation for it I'm as rested as I ever am as fed as I ever am and I'd just be like not functioning quite properly it's not not even just crankiness but just like not not functioning as well um and riding the motorcycle is another good one that one's more mental than physical but uh it's something where uh so doing something incredibly dangerous where one mistake means that you die and your children don't have a father anymore is really great for pushing every other thought out of your mind other than I need to make sure this gear shift is perfect so that I don't spill all my guts out all over the road.

2:51:46Luke Lafreniere:Those are both pretty good for me.

2:51:48Linus Sebastian:That makes sense. I bet you, because you said you notice, I bet you that starts to happen after like four days. That makes sense.

2:51:57Luke Lafreniere:I like strongly believe that. I mean, I never go four days anymore. I have like strict rules. I try to vigorously exercise every two days and at three, it's mandatory. So if it's 1145 at night and my only option is like go for a half an hour roller blade or like go for a swim or like whatever is like on hand, I just have to do whatever option I have. I support that.

2:52:22Linus Sebastian:That genuinely makes a lot of sense to me. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Incredibly important.

2:52:27Luke Lafreniere:And like for everyone. I actually hate it a lot of the time, but it's like, it's so worth it. I mean, there's. What do you mean rollerblade question mark rollerblade? It is one of the most intense forms of exercise from a cardio standpoint. What if that's someone just genuinely not even knowing what that is? Inline skating. Sorry, sorry, sorry.

2:52:52Linus Sebastian:Like in our generation, that was a popular thing for quite a while.

2:52:56Luke Lafreniere:I think it was a popular thing for a very short period of time. I think we both just landed on it.

2:53:00Linus Sebastian:We were in that.

2:53:01Luke Lafreniere:I think so.

2:53:02Linus Sebastian:Because like I want, like if you're growing up now, have you ever even seen someone do that?

2:53:06Luke Lafreniere:I don't know. I don't know.

2:53:08Linus Sebastian:I never see people rollerblading.

2:53:09Luke Lafreniere:Battle of the Guns says just run. Knees. Yeah. Running is super, super f***ing hard on your knees and it's actually insane to me how many people do it.

2:53:19Linus Sebastian:It can be a lot better if you run in grass or on some type of soft surface, but running on cement, running on sidewalk is genuinely really brutal.

2:53:29Luke Lafreniere:Roller blade. It's rough. If you're going to be on concrete anyway, throw on inline skates. It's better exercise. You'll cover more ground and it'll be way easier on your knees.

2:53:38Linus Sebastian:Running on a track as well. Most tracks are built to be more springy and spongy. I used to go to a local track, but it's just quite a drive. So now I run in the grass because I have a soft grass field that's close enough.

2:53:53Luke Lafreniere:Battler Gun says maybe that's why my knees are f***ed. There's a pretty good chance. There's a pretty solid chance. Cycling though. Cycling is another option that's low impact. But I knew that I was born into bad knees before I fully developed the badness of my knees. So I started to really chill on anything high impact relatively young. And I'm really glad that I did.

2:54:18Linus Sebastian:don't do this, but you could go out to a field and lightly punch the grass and then go out to the sidewalk and lightly punch the sidewalk and just observe. Yeah. For me, the, the, I've gone onto this on the show before. I'm not going to go into it over COVID period. I got super depresso and actually like mess myself up in some not great ways that I'm somewhat still paying for, figured out that a big part of the reason for that was that I just wasn't partaking in physical activity because the spring back was crazy. And a lot of it was just getting active again. Getting active again was tough because I was very broken in a bunch of different ways, but just solving that involved being physically active to a certain degree.

2:55:05Linus Sebastian:Cause even like therapeutic movements are still being physically active. Going for a walk can still be physically active. You might need more time. You might need to do it for a longer duration. But like, man, I'm busier than the vast majority of people that I know. I can still fit in a fair amount of stuff, going for a walk on the weekend for a few hours or something. I trick my brain by playing Pokemon Go or doing something else. But Pokemon Go almost every weekend will have a three-hour event. And I'm just like, okay, well, even if the group that I'm with is standing and stopping in one spot, I'm just going to kind of go around in circles like a weirdo.

2:55:42Linus Sebastian:But like, I just keep moving. every day I walk a path for a certain amount of time that gets me minimum 3 ,500 steps just from walking that path over the course of a week that adds up a lot and then you know I'm walking outside of that as well but that's very very important if I need a mental escape oddly enough one of the best things can be sleep a shower oh shower that's a good answer that I don't turn music on for you listen to music in the shower hey yeah huh never i i don't shower much anymore i've become a bath guy okay what what the f**k man obviously i wasn't yeah i know i'm like

2:56:26Luke Lafreniere:sweatiest guy i know hose linus is a hose man he's a hose man yeah anyway yeah um cold and keeps never even occurred to me to listen to music in the bath yeah yeah um but yeah i just bring

2:56:41Linus Sebastian:nothing another weird one is like uh my current barber guy is a man so you're barber really not that many words okay uh oh interesting and i will just also sit there and not really talk you know

2:56:56Luke Lafreniere:what it's a funny thing i um get to think it's good i don't know what it is i see other people doing it but i cannot use my phone when i'm at the barber oh no i just think it's so rude even

2:57:08Linus Sebastian:dude that dude a hundred percent that feels nuts actually i just even if i'm not talking to him at

2:57:15Luke Lafreniere:all no i just like i wouldn't even dream of just like being on my phone i have a thing where my dad

2:57:24Linus Sebastian:used to have this trick where he would like kind of scratch the back of my head and also my brother's head in a certain way and it would like make us want to go to sleep and that has dog trained me in a weird way. Vulcan death grip? No, it's just this head scratch thing. But that has made it so I tend to get really tired when I'm getting my hair cut. That's good to know. I'm just going to file that away.

2:57:51Linus Sebastian:Only my dad actually knows the proper movement.

2:57:55Luke Lafreniere:It's enough trial. I could probably figure it out. We'll put a little foxtail on you. Sorry, excuse me, dare tail. Whoa, now. Get some scritches behind your ears. Whoa. whoa

2:58:06Linus Sebastian:slow down

2:58:06Luke Lafreniere:we need those gamer headsets that have the ears on them oh my god wicked cushions get on that

2:58:12Linus Sebastian:I'll often just I can keep my head in position while keeping my eyes closed so I'll close my eyes so I'm not getting hair fragments in my eyes and then just think and he usually just like leaves me alone cuts the hair does the beard and then I leave and it's great and he's great heck yeah

2:58:35Luke Lafreniere:You know what? One that didn't occur to me is, you know, those facial treatments that I've done before? Some of them are extraordinarily painful. Actually pretty good for clearing your mind. Intense pain. You can't go anywhere. You can't do anything. You just are there and in pain. You have to focus on tanking it.

2:58:54Linus Sebastian:Yeah. Yeah. That makes sense. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. You should try it sometime. Doing something really hard and all consuming. Yeah. And honestly, the danger thing, this is probably terrible advice to throw on the windshield, but hell yeah, let's do it. The danger thing you're talking about with the bike can also minimize other problems and help you deal with them more easily. Because when you're grappling with these intense problems, other small problems are like, oh, whatever. That's fine. I'm not I don't care about that inconvenience I'm more focused on the bigger things

2:59:25Luke Lafreniere:Bajor Electric says no that's not good to endorse Linus intense pain I'm not endorsing it I'm just saying it was uh very painful a follower and impossible to focus on anything else thanks for the ltd coin a while ago this will make my seventh screwdriver what Dan please answer this aloud since I can't read the ticker since I'm driving and listening how cappuccino going um i took it racing for the first time a couple weeks ago wow what do you race against lawnmowers uh yourself nice i came 65th out of 95 for a first timer nice uh the the guy who was training me who i went with uh he came in fifth um and i thought that i did a terrible job and wasn't driving the car very well.

3:00:19Luke Lafreniere:And everybody I was with was like, no, you did great. What are you talking about? It's awesome for a first timer. And then I did a ride along and somebody with a 370Z and I went, okay, yeah, this car cannot go faster. Yeah. I think I was, whoa, like four to five seconds off pace, which is kind of crazy. But it was a lot of fun. In the cappuccino, that's really crazy. Yeah. Needs more grip. And then it'll still be slow.

3:00:45Linus Sebastian:Were you sliding around at all, or was it just really sketchy?

3:00:48Luke Lafreniere:It also has enough power to break the rear tires, which is kind of crazy. I need to dyno it, because I don't think it makes 80 horsepower, perfectly honest. Didn't drift it, but I am a pretty good driver. I've won an iRacing event. Thank you. I have won gold, and then I stopped, so I would never lose again. It's really intense. That's one of the reasons I want the BSB, because those sessions are like three hours long. and if I've got a giant thing strapped to my head, it's like brutal. Okay, so what you're saying is that if I do pursue my dream of buying an acreage and building just like a giant outdoor go-kart track on it, you're in.

3:01:29Luke Lafreniere:Oh, so you have to have another dream

3:01:30Linus Sebastian:after having a first dream?

3:01:32Luke Lafreniere:First dream? Your dream was a bad adventure center. We're on like dream seven at this point. Okay. I have a jet for crying out loud. Don't, I mean. You always need a dream. We might as well be real about it.

3:01:41Linus Sebastian:You gotta keep dreaming, Lou. All right, fair enough. Hope keeps us going. So what dream number, I'm stealing this from Full Plane Chat, that's not an original idea, what dream number is Linustown? Linustown is not happening. It's so stupid.

3:01:55Luke Lafreniere:That's right. It will be a secret. Just a little further in the future. If I wanted to run a sex cult, then Linustown would make a ton of sense. Okay, so a little further in the future for dreams. I don't want a sex cult. That's what a sex cult leader would say. Yes. He's not the messiah! that's what the messiah would say sex cult sex cult that's a quality life of brian reference

3:02:19Linus Sebastian:thank you it's the second time i've got to throw that out on one show you know you mentioned the not wanting to race again because you'd break your record uh have i ever told you before that uh about emma playing pubg oh did she get a chicken dinner and then never play it again

3:02:35Luke Lafreniere:have i told you about yvonne's paintball because i suspect it's the same story

3:02:38Linus Sebastian:probably go ahead uh she was i was streaming one time playing pub g she spun it up on a computer behind me i had no idea uh chat started yelling at me that she was playing after like a while and i turned around and she was playing um and i never took over anything but tried to add some verbal advice what she had been doing was she looted one room and then got on like a motorcycle and just drove around and she's playing solos so people didn't want to my assumption is people didn't want a shooter to give their position away because you're playing solos so she's just ripping around when she would run out of gas she would just find another vehicle and just keep driving around and she ended up just surviving until the final two and then she was running around she ended up in a wheat field and just went prone and just laid there and then the circle reduced to like exactly where she was and the dude just ran straight head-on at her but she's laying down in a wheat field so she sees him first no mouse control at all just holds left click and it just recoils up to his head and she chicken dinners with one kill her first pub g game ever and then just never played again because she's not that interested she's played one fps game one time she's never played any other fps game that's crazy the only fps game she ever played was pub g

3:03:54Luke Lafreniere:she has a 100 win rate that's crazy just goaded so i took yvonne to my weekend like outlaw paint ball session like a bazillion years ago and it was a real chore getting her to come out and try it with me she's not super into pain um and to me paintball is about the pain that's like the whole point of it is that you need the risk people play or it's water guns people play differently when there's when there's pain involved anyway um i i played alongside her that day um but like We didn't stack the teams in any way. She was just one of the players who came out. It was me and Keaton from NCIX and his friend, his buddy Brooke, and then some of the other Warthogs paintball guys who were just having our usual weekend paintball matches.

3:04:42Luke Lafreniere:She got, I think it was something ludicrous. If she'd gotten one kill and then just been like, okay, I'm good, I'd have been like, yeah, you haven't really like, you only played one round or whatever. She got seven kills. It was either seven or nine. It was an odd number. I remember that. And it was more than five. So she got some ludicrous number of kills, didn't get hit once, and then retired from paintball and would never play with me again. Wow. Like exact same story. Nobody goes out to the paintball field for like a day. We were out there. She played like somewhere between five and eight rounds.

3:05:21Luke Lafreniere:Like we would play rounds continuously for like four or five hours. significantly more common that people get zero kills yeah yeah then get like one or two and these are people that play every weekend yeah like she wasn't just at some scrub public field yeah and i was like what like what the heck that's pretty great hello dll from Australia. What dead tech trend do you secretly wish would make a comeback?

3:05:53Linus Sebastian:Physical media.

3:05:55Luke Lafreniere:Ha ha ha ha.

3:05:59Linus Sebastian:Dead tech trend.

3:06:01Luke Lafreniere:Yeah, I feel like what you want is like, you know, physical keyboards on phones or like, you know what? I've got one. Give me a cut dang pullout antenna. Oh. because yeah i don't know about you but my reception kind of sucks and that internal antenna supposedly is that good is like as good ish or something but i i i you know what i don't

3:06:29Linus Sebastian:believe it someone told me last wandshow i haven't confirmed this information but someone told me last wandshow that i think it was rogers or telus or something one of them sold all their towers to private equity i think they both did and then rent the towers from them so that now they have no obligation to improve their networks here tell us announces partnership with le case who will

3:06:53Luke Lafreniere:acquire 49.9 percent canadian wireless tower infrastructure operator terry on and then hold on rogers sold cell towers i think they did too definitive agreement proceeds will be used to repay debt expects leverage something maintain full operational control of its wireless network So basically both of our major carriers sold significant shares in their backbones theoretically to like make the service better. But I don't know.

3:07:27Linus Sebastian:As far as I can tell, it was to shift responsibility for the network being so bad.

3:07:31Luke Lafreniere:Yeah. So Rogers sold 49.9 % to Blackstone and then Telus sold 49.9 % to LaCasse. and like kai's like has um and dude it's it's been funny because as a company we've switched cellular providers multiple times over the time that we've existed and every time we change providers people complain about the new one and how it's worse and i figured it out i think what's actually happening is they're all getting worse so every time we switch it's because we've gone

3:08:03Linus Sebastian:back and forth from sometimes the same provider coverage on average got worse with the last change

3:08:09Luke Lafreniere:dude 10 years ago i used to think that like crappy cell service was like some developing country nonsense like i i i if you'd asked me 10 years ago when's the last time you dropped a cell phone call i've been like what's a dropped call and now yeah dude we had we had very good service My commute has two dead zones at least on both TELUS and Rogers. Both of them have at least two on my daily commute. I cannot have like a join a conference call on my way to and from work. Yeah, me too. It's unbelievable how bad it's gotten.

3:08:50Linus Sebastian:Do you want to make her own? I want to know how it works so I can rewrite my Broadcom modem. Yeah. And the last one I've got for you today. Sorry. I was kind of serious. And I didn't mean in a Linus town, put up your own 5G towers kind of way. I mean, there's actually a lot of like build your own access to the internet type projects going on right now. Like a ton of different ones. Mesh networking, all this other kind of stuff. Where you could theoretically maybe build. This would be way too much work because it would be way too far. and you'd also dox yourself extremely hard. But you could like mesh network yourself all the way to work.

3:09:33Linus Sebastian:So you could go off of your like home's internet.

3:09:35Luke Lafreniere:Just like Malaysia style. I just like climb the telephone poles myself and run my wires. Those exist in BC. I just mean people just like doing it themselves. Gorilla networking.

3:09:44Linus Sebastian:Yeah, no, gorilla networking is a thing that exists. I would never do that. For sure.

3:09:52Linus Sebastian:I mean, it's not even, well, I guess yeah placing your thing on someone else's pole is against the law and potentially using their powers against the law only if they find out that's not how a law works allegedly Dan move us on

3:10:11Luke Lafreniere:hey calm lords loving the socks so far that's rough why do you like the socks so much hmm

3:10:21Linus Sebastian:oh that's rough

3:10:22Luke Lafreniere:what would you say tim cook's biggest success and failures were now that his time as ceo is coming to an end are you excited for turnus to take over um i i think the airpods were the most like new new category defining product the airpods were insane airpods alone are worth more than like

3:10:48Linus Sebastian:extremely major companies that everyone watching this knows my kids think headphones are called

3:10:53Luke Lafreniere:airpods like if i remember correctly airpods are worth more than nike isn't nike on like a downturn okay apple silicon is an amazing accomplishment um yeah yep man failures i i would say just like allowing the designers to dictate um the functionality of a product is just pretty stupid how you end up with things like the magic mouse charging port on the bottom that everyone knows is just completely stupid and they just don't they just never fix um yeah trash can was brutal butterfly keyboards were pretty brutal those are more like product failures though i wouldn't say that those are like ceo failures i'm i'm seeing that airpods

3:11:44Linus Sebastian:alone as a business unit would be worth uh i'm seeing wccf tech is saying 175 there's another one billion 200 yeah billion like market cap you mean yeah yeah which is uh wild apparently

3:11:57Luke Lafreniere:more than nvidia nvidia in 2020 uh hold on yeah in 2020 airpods revenue was more than amd

3:12:08Linus Sebastian:and NVIDIA combined.

3:12:10Luke Lafreniere:AirPods, man. AirPods are pretty sick.

3:12:13Linus Sebastian:Jeez. Yeah. I mean, they made it trendy to have like white stuff dripping out of your ears. So. Uh-huh.

3:12:29Next one?

3:12:30Luke Lafreniere:Yeah. Yeah, there's a couple more that came in that are questions. Hey, LLD and G'day from Australia. have you ever been to australia and what was your favorite thing about it no not yet i'd love to i want to go visit dank pods yeah i've wanted to it's really far and

3:12:49Linus Sebastian:it's got bugs that are those are scary i'm used to bears he's like they're they're terrifying but they're big you can see them you know what's happening like we've got daddy long legs and

3:13:01Luke Lafreniere:we have like one or two but they're not poisonous yeah well he was telling me that his bathroom had like 50 in it yeah i'm good on that i think i'm good too pay for him to come here he can see he can see crows again uh that's that's all i got for you guys all right surprisingly thank you guys very much for tuning into the wang show we'll see you again next week same bad time same bad channel bye i was ready for you you're so fast
