In short

Episode topic: Malcolm Todd discusses Coachella and live-music “discoveries,” his music career (TikTok virality, songwriting process), upcoming tour plans, Instagram getting deactivated, and personal psychology topics including weed anxiety, control vs planning, Hashem/Jewish spirituality, and OCD rituals. He also answers rapid-fire “therapist” questions about gender reveals, roommates stealing, ear piercing, and a boyfriend’s sports-betting addiction.

Guest backgrounds

Malcolm Todd is a musician/songwriter and performer. He’s a Virgo (Sept 15, 2003). He learned guitar and started pursuing music around age 16. He’s connected to Don Toliver via a sampled track and is preparing to play Madison Square Garden.

Key claims

Weed gives him intense anxiety/panic and “freaking out” after ~10 minutes, so he stopped for five years. TikTok is the main driver of his songs’ reach. His OCD shows up as specific phone/shower/cleanliness rituals and “magical thinking.” He trusts Hashem and uses “palms up” mindfulness.

Notable examples

Coachella highlights (Turnstile; LCD Soundsystem). Don Toliver sampling “Chest Pain” (E85). Songwriting origin of “Roommates” from a guitar riff. Upcoming album “Do That Again” (June 5) and tracks “Do That Again” and “Obsessica.”

0:11This episode we have Malcolm Todd on. Hi Malcolm. Hi Jake. Last time I saw you was at Coachella. Yeah. Love Coachella. Did you have fun? It was cool. Honestly after Coachella I didn't talk to anyone for three weeks. Why? What? Because it was I think it was a week. Too many handshakes. It took the energy drained out of me from all the like, you know, have you met this guy? And it's like, hey, what's up? I'm Malcolm. And it's like, you're never going to remember my name. I'm never going to remember your name. It's kind of disheartening. I did that to you. Yeah, but I remember you. No, but I did that to you.

0:45I introduced you to it. Oh, yeah, for sure. And of course, that's a part of the culture of it. But it's just like, I think the music was great. I had a lot of like. Who'd you see? I saw, my favorite act was Turnstile. You know what? I'm sad I missed them. Yeah. I just kind of happened to stumble upon them and I don't really listen to turnstile and it was like the best. It was like spiritual and beautiful and and it was cool to discover live music or like music through a live performance. That's my favorite thing. Yeah, which I didn't know I loved that. And now I'm like, oh, wait, I need to do this more.

1:19Yeah. Are you that's the only time that's ever happened to you? yeah I saw LCD sound system and I hadn't really listened to them I heard a few songs but I hadn't really listened to them in depth and I saw them live and that was the other time and that's it do you want to tell me about those flip-flops um yeah they're actually my friend's brand okay yeah my friend Evan makes them but I've just been like really flipping and flopping with my shoes. Do you like how when you do you like when you walk and it makes the like sound? I guess I don't really realize it. Is it like Spongebob when he walks and it's like Yes!

2:02Yeah, I'm down to have a sound effect with my walk then people can know when I'm coming. You haven't noticed a sound effect with those flip-flops? Those flip-flops look like they spring back on your heel. They totally do. I was rocking these other flip-flops and then I put these on today. These are kind of like my like I'm kind of showing out for you. Oh, you are? Yeah. Well, you know, I called Audrey about this. She told me. Oh, she did? Well, she's. Yeah, she did. Well, of course. Well, of course. Well, of course. It's like when you're telling me something, you're telling my sisters type. Are you guys best friends?

2:31Yeah, of course. Some aren't. No, it's true. Actually, I feel like most aren't for some reason. It feels like siblings don't get along as they should. But she told me you're great at basketball. That's what she told me. She told you. She said like, yes. She was like, I told him to ask you about basketball. I was like, I don't know why she said that too. I'm okay. She said you loved basketball. I love basketball. I still love it. Did you play in high school? My claim to fame with basketball in high school is that I didn't play on the team. I played baseball. Quit to try theater, which is another story.

3:09Anyways, didn't play on the basketball team, but in senior year, they were doing a three-on-three school-wide basketball tournament. And the players on the team would play in it. And I took two of my friends that weren't on the team and we won the whole thing. And you guys had not played basketball. Yeah, we weren't on the team, but we played basketball but we weren't on the team and making it our whole personality. And then we won. And were the people that were on the team so embarrassed? Yeah, and I have this hole in my jeans and I'm just like, yeah, that's just the right amount of real estate.

3:40Well, I would assume you're wearing underwear. You would assume. I would hope so. I am. Do you know anyone that just like raw dog's pants? Asher Cartman. Who? Oh, from South Park? No, no, no, no. Asher Cartman, my... Oh, that's Eric Cartman. Eric Cartman, no. Asher Cartman's one of my best friends, and he's in my band. And I just totally blew his shit up. But yeah, he... I mean, he seems to probably blow his own shit up. Yeah. No, he's nuts. He's amazing. You'd love him. Well, he's kind of love or hate him. Really? Yeah. Some people say that about me. Okay, I think it's a very, like, it's a high integrity quality.

4:19Oh my God, tell me more. It's also so hot in here. No, it was so cold outside. No, it's so hot. And it was cold outside in the waiting room or in the outside? Like of the world outside? Both. Okay, because it just started getting hot in the real world outside. I know. Which was really random because it was gloomy as F. You're on the east side now? East side gang. Do you love the east side? Someone's got to hold it down over there. I feel like a lot of people are holding it down. I know, I know. I like the east side, but I grew up on the west side. Where'd you grow up? New York. Where in New York?

4:51Washington Heights. Is that from... In the Heights? Yeah. Yeah. Is that the play you were in when you tried theater? No, Audrey was in it, though. They did that when I was in eighth grade, and she was a junior or something. What play did you do when you tried theater? I did. It was called Something Rotten. Do you remember any of it? I was in the troupe. I was in the ensemble and I danced around. I love the musical. I actually saw the musical on Broadway too before they, and we were the first high school production of it ever. Wow. Thanks. But it was cool. Do you remember any of the songs? Yeah, it was like called, What's that coming?

5:32It's called like the Black Plague. It was the song I sang. It wasn't even a solo. I would imagine. Because you were in the troupe. Because I was in a freaking troop. Yeah, it wasn't a one-man troop, sadly. I would have been down for it to be a one-man troop. Do you smoke weed? No, I haven't in, like, five years. Were you a big stoner in high school? Well, yeah, I just, like, was smoking weed, like, sophomore year of high school, like, all the time. And then I realized that's not my swag. And I don't, I swear to God, I'll never smoke weed ever again in my life. I freaked out. Wait, why? Because it just, like, doesn't mesh well with my brain at all.

6:07and it made me very freaking weird. Yeah. Yeah. It's just like it clearly is like for people and not for people. And if it's not for you, like it's not for you and it's not for me. It's definitely not for me, but I love it. Okay. So you'll like explain. Like it's like for me, like you know how people are like, I love like a glass of wine at the end of the day. Sure. I love just like smoking a little bit at the end of the day. Yeah. Just laying down. So it is for you. It makes my mind work. Yeah, there you go. Well, then after those 10 minutes, because that only lasts 10 minutes. That whole experience is only 10 minutes.

6:42After those 10 minutes, it's downhill. Really bad. Really, really, really. Like just like freaking out about stuff. Yeah, then the next day I'm still freaking out. Like today was just tears. Tears. Mm-hmm. Interesting. Does it make you like kind of cloudy? Mm-hmm. Always. Okay, so well, better be a good fucking 10 minutes. It's the best 10 minutes of all time. I do my best work in those 10 minutes. Good for you. Yeah. I don't think it's worth it. I wouldn't. It sounds like a nightmare. It is. Okay. That's how I would describe my life. Okay. A nightmare. That's cute. Malcolm. You still in the nightmare?

7:20No. When's your birthday? I'm a Virgo. I'm September 15th, 2003. So are you like super controlling? No. I think everyone wants control to a certain extent, but I don't think I would be over controlling. But you know. I like being in charge You know Do you like being in control Um On a night out No I like somebody to make the plan You tell me where we're going We'll go Feel you feel you Like set it up I don't want to pay Yeah For sure It's way easier It's way easier to be told what to do Like And you don't have to bear the consequences of Having made the decision In case you know It's like so easy to be like, oh, I don't care.

8:06I'm easy. And then like if it's not fun, you'll be like, no, this is fun. Instead of like if you made the decision and it's not fun, you're like, I'm so sorry. Like I fucked it all up. I wouldn't do the second part. I'd be like, well, you guys chose to follow me. So. Okay. Right. You should make more decisions for yourself. You sound like you have that setting. I hate pressure. You like pressure? Pressure makes diamonds. If you haven't heard. I haven't heard that. I like pressure. Oh, pressure makes diamonds. I love that. Yeah. How naughty. I love that. Do you like pressure a little more now? Yeah, I do.

8:37It makes it make it. Hmm. Hmm. So is it one of your songs sampled in a Don Toliver song? Yeah. It's called chest pain. I love. I love. Oh. Yeah. That's E85. Yeah. E85. And then now I guess. Yeah. I don't know when this comes out. Probably not in the next three days, but I'm about to go on tour. Yeah. I'm about to go on tour. and then before I go on tour, I'm going to go and play that song with him in New York. Shut it. Yeah, in like a few days. Are you so excited? Yeah, I'm just going to go up and play the guitar and shred and like, I love it. I don't have to talk. I just get to hold the guitar and look handsome.

9:16It's like the dream of all dreams. And be next to Don Toliver. What? Where are you doing this? Madison Square Garden. Wow. Is he going to be like, and Malcolm Todd? I don't know. I'm down to just like totally slide in there and like not even make a peep. like and if and if you know who i am then it's really exciting for you and if you don't i'm just in the band i kind of like that vibe more but you can say my name

9:44so how'd you find out that well i guess they would have asked if they could sample it yeah they sent it to me like a long time ago and i was like this is really good and then and i didn't hear anything about it for so long and then they were like it's track one on the album and I was like well that's really cool and now it's like this huge song and I'm very honored to be a part of it and Don Toliver's so good so good the new album is amazing yeah yeah I love it are you excited for your new album? super excited I love making music I love singing it I love playing it for people freaking living the dream you and Audrey are the same person yeah do you get that a lot?

10:22yeah yeah we're pretty similar she was on this podcast yeah How much screen time or off screen time have you gotten with Audrey? Not enough. Not enough. We were just talking about it. Not enough. Yeah, you guys would probably have a blast. Yeah, we were on FaceTime for a while the other day. I didn't want to get off. Maybe she could plan one of your nights out. Does she enjoy planning nights out? I don't think it's like one of her like, I don't think it revs her engine, but I think she could do a good job. You know what I'm saying? Well, Malcolm, what are you therapist about today? Dude, I'm very pissed about my freaking Instagram getting deactivated.

10:59Yeah, how did that happen? I don't know, dude. I don't know what I did. It's like hopefully when I step out of this room, I have my Instagram back, but it's been too long. Is it eating you alive a little bit? No, because I trust. I trust. I just trust. It's okay. And I still have my legs and my arms and my heart, so it's okay. Wow. But what the fuck? no it's like I can tell that you're thinking about it well I'm just there pissed about it yeah I get that A I don't know what I did did this just happen like 5 seconds this happened last night splendid night I shot a video yesterday cooked some food for like some of the people that worked on the set and then we like had some drinks and then I'm laying down I was like what a great night try to open Instagram and they're like no and so and then I like immediately text like three people in the middle of the night and I'm like code red.

11:58This is like the hub of all media for me. Like, can I get this back? And it's still haven't gotten it back. So it's like, whatever. Midnight last night. Um, and I, and I just want to know why and when I get it back. I'm just curious. Do you use take talk at all? It's not the same. It's not the same. It's like I have to take talk is for like, yeah, take like Instagram is an art piece. I kind of agree for sure. Are you a dumper? Mm. No, I'm like one, two picks. Yeah, dumper. Like, I'm a dump. I'm a fan of dumps. You can quote me on that. But my intentionality isn't in all the dump. What about you?

12:39You're a dumper. I'm a dumper. Yeah. As of late. Feels good. It just makes me feel cool. You probably just have too many good photos where you're like, I can't just like. Well, no, you have to go out of your way to take them. Yeah. You have to be like, ooh, that's fair. You don't have like people just nailing photos of you all the time. you need to get one of those people you think I'm like a streamer no no no god forbid I think I think just like one of the home like I have my cousin and like I can just be like I won't feel because I feel really bad asking people to take pictures of me I feel like really uncomfortable but I found my person where I can be like take a picture of me I want to look cute and it's your cousin yeah and he's my best friend and also my assistant is that him in there yeah Jackson Jackson, you're his cousin?

13:24Yeah. Oh, that's sweet. He's also, we share the same middle name. What's your middle name? Todd. Oh, my God, my middle name's Shane.

13:35Anyways. Okay, so you're not a dumper. Not a dumper. Your Instagram's deactivated. Don't remind me. Yeah. Yours is activated, though. Oh, I mean, I wouldn't be here if it was deactivated. I know. I feel like I'm playing it pretty cool. Julian. I know you care a lot more about it than you're leading on No I care a bunch about it I just like what is like me like freaking out gonna do Oh please I can't hear that right now It's true Because Louise is nodding her head and I just don't even want to look at her right now Speak on that, expand I'm just thinking like If it's meant to be it's meant to be And if it's not meant to be then me and God are gonna have a talk later Are you religious?

14:15No not really I mean I believe in a higher power or whatever yeah well I take it all to Hashem cool who's he he's Jewish God okay cool and like there's the sinus rinse in New York called Hashem's rinse and so me and my friends will be like oh my god take a rinse and how do you sinus rinse if you don't mind me asking oh you just so like right now like Peyton and I are like oh so it's not I was treating this as like a bathhouse scenario no we're not actually rinsing we're just like oh my god take a rinse okay it's like take a lap take a rant take a rant Hashem's I love this who's his friend it's all my friends oh it's all your friends you have a lot of those I have a lot of friends yeah do you feel like you have too many sometimes you know I used to actually when I was when I was like 20 when I was Jackson's age I I felt that I had I had a lot of I was spreading myself a little thin yeah it's it's yeah I think that was like the Coachella effect you know like it's just like the too many people it's like we can't This can't be harnessed, you know?

15:20Well, Coachella's like not like... Yeah. Actually, I would say for the first time... Have you been to Coachella before? That was my first time. The first time always kind of sucks. It was also my first time at a music festival that I didn't play. Like, and I was just in the mix, like kicking it. Did you party after? Yeah, I partied. Well, I would like to get your opinion on streamers. Because you had an almost visceral reaction to them when I brought them up. Yeah. I don't watch or partake, but I am interested in the culture. Yeah, it freaks me. I don't know. I don't know. Like, do I get canceled for saying I don't get streamers?

15:51No, I don't get it. And what bugs me out about it is that if you meet them IRL, they're always streaming. It's like a Black Mirror episode. Yeah, it's really scary. Yeah. Do you know how much money they make, though? A lot of money. A lot. They are like TV for this generation of kids. Like, that's TV, you know? Like, I don't know. I don't want to get too into the weeds about it but it is that that's like that's like late night television to literally don't quote me on that because I love late night do you? yeah it's like funny and they tell jokes and there's musicians and I like I love like Jimmy Fallon and Jimmy Kimmel and all the Jimmy Jimmy Johnson what's your favorite sandwich?

16:39because I said Jimmy John's

16:43I've been off sandwiches right now But I just I really have been Because I'm just like Not eating bread like that Oh are you on a diet? I'm on a diet What's your diet? Dude Erwan You ride for Erwan Yeah just let me go through it Okay

17:02I gotta just It's my first time living So I'm just trying to Eat as much Erwan As I can But it's just It's just I feel like it's just healthy and tastes good and it's simple. How excited are you for the Don Toliver thing? Do you guys text you and Don? Yeah, we've DM'd a bit. I haven't met him, so I'm excited to go link him. Yeah, just being on stage and just playing the guitar and being just a part of the band and not really kind of being a little piece of the puzzle sounds lit. And Madison Square Garden is cool. Right. It is very cool. Yeah. The Knicks play basketball there. Back to basketball.

17:38Oh, yeah. See, are you a Knick? Or you would be a Lakers fan. Yeah, I just love the NBA. I don't even, I just, I'm just here for it all. Who's your favorite player? I love Anthony Edwards. What team is he on? The Timberwolves. And that's Chicago? Yeah, no. That's Minnesota. You were close. Really close, actually. Geographically. You like geography? I'm bad at geography. I'm really bad at you. I wonder who's worse. I bet you I'm worse. How can we test it? Actually, what's your worst? What is your most embarrassing geography thing? Because I'll tell you mine. You have to go first because you obviously have it.

18:10I thought Florida was at the top of the map. Until I was... It's at the bottom. Yes. Well, you're just looking at it upside down your whole life. No, I just thought it went New York, Florida, LA. And that was it. One time I got food poisoning in Florida from eating an artichoke at Houston's. You call it Houston's because people call it Hillstone. I'm so sorry. Are we not? Are you being serious? Houston's and Hillstone. It's like the same thing. Yeah, but it's like I went to a Houston's. Yeah, but people call it Hillstone. Had I gone to a Hillstone, I would have called it a Hillstone. But that's the same thing.

18:47They're the same owners. Oh, but they're not the same exact thing. I thought it was just like. No, you want to know why it's a little different. Everything's a little different. It's because if you hit a requirement for being a chain, you have to show calories. And their things are so calorie heavy that they don't want to show you. That's why I feel like shit every time I eat at Hillstone. I had it. I had SPG for lunch today. Oh, yeah, which is the same fucking thing as well. Which is next to Honor Bar. Yeah, yeah, yeah. And then there's R &D Kitchen. And then there's Hillstone. And then there's Houston's.

19:15And they're all the same. This is a Black Mirror episode. It's Honor Bar, R &D Kitchen, Hillstone, Houston's, South Beverly Grill. And they all have the spinach dip. Sorry, trigger word? It's just like, that's what I had. And I had a whole artichoke. Oh, my God. Seriously, I don't think I can ever look at it. Oh, I had the artichoke last time I was there, too, in New York. Did you enjoy it? I didn't. Can I get food poisoning? Yeah, it was fine. I had a panic attack because of my food poisoning, and they had to pump me up with, like, something. Like chill out with sauce? Yeah, I was throwing up Pepto-Bismol, like, straight pink.

19:46Last time I got food poisoning, I had sweet green, and I just threw up 13 times. What? And if I had thrown up the 14th time, I was going to the hospital. Wait, wait, wait. What protein did you have that caused this? It was either some fucked up romaine, or it was the chicken. Really? Isn't that E. coli? literally I was like this might be it for me you know one time I had baby polio as opposed to grown-up polio what's the day it's like polio junior so I got up in bed and I remember getting up out of bed and I went to go stand up and fell to the floor and I couldn't walk for an entire week and everyone was like oh yeah that's like mini polio and so just it's just in your legs Were you like coughing and like did you have like anything?

20:35I just couldn't walk. Just couldn't walk. Cool. And then my parents were like, you can, if you walk to us, we'll take you to twin boots. What's it called? Two boots? How old were you? Six. And they were like, if you walk to us out of your like little not, what's not soldier stroller. Yeah. You can get pizza. And I got up and I walked. And then how long did the polio last? Just a week? Yeah. Can you fact check me on this on baby polio? I swear it's a thing. It reminds me of, like, Baby Mario. Baby polio? Yeah, it's like polio. Is it a thing, Lou? I swear I'm right. I mean, they just call it polio.

21:12No, but if I had polio, it would have been a whole thing. Sounded like a bit of a thing. Just as polio is a highly contagious viral disease primarily affects children. Your parents just told you it was baby polio, so you didn't freak out. I did have polio. Sounds like you just needed to hit legs a few more days. Do you remember when I had polio as a child? what fuck that no you didn't have polio oh you didn't know what you had was um something kids get where they are unable to walk for like three or four days yeah it was it was weird and fucking scary but it wasn't polio yeah but i thought you said it was like polio junior no i forgot what it was called i mean you can google it it's it's a temporary paralyzation yeah where kids can't use or legs and I forgot what, I mean, it was, it was freaky.

22:03I remember you pulling yourself across the floor. I mean, it was nuts. I had totally forgotten about that. Jesus Christ. Okay. Love you. I love you. Yeah. I told you. Polo Jr. Had it. It's not a thing. It's okay. Well, I'm. It was so scary. You guys. You're brave. No, I'm brave. I got scurvy the last week. I'm just kidding. Just like bringing up like old diseases I would literally If you actually told me you had scurvy right now I would actually No it's scabies that kill me Don't even say that Scabies Have you ever had lice? Yeah I had lice one time when I was a kid But I always buzzed my head so it was chill Now if I had lice Knock on freaking wood That's not wood Yeah whatever But like That would suck because I like my hair Like I was so down I was like oh another buzz cut sure But now I'm like Buzz cut I don't want that right now Have you ever had bed bugs?

22:58No. Why are you lying? Because, no. My friend did, but I wasn't going to blast them. Zip zap. Oh, my mom. My mom had bed bugs once. She got it. She got it traveling, and she was really pissed. And I wasn't there the whole time, but every time I'd call her and be like, how's it going? She'd just be like, these fucking bed bugs. I'm going to freak out. It holds a weight. Even though it's not technically your fault, once you have bed bugs, you're the villain. You think so? It's like in the Spider-Man movie when he becomes Venom. It's just like he can't get it off of him. And you're still mad at him, but it's not his fault.

23:27What's your favorite movie? Spider-Man. No, I'm just kidding. It's like probably Good Will Hunting or Elf or Nemo. What do you love about Nemo? Well, it's a childhood movie, and I've seen it so many times, and I love the father-son relationship between Marlon and Nemo. And it's just a perfect movie. It's just like... Do you have a favorite quote? they're in this whale and Dory and Marlon are hanging on to the like taste buds of this whale they're trying to like escape and you know ignorant but beautiful old Dory is telling Marlon is telling Marlon like you have to let go if you want to leave this whale to keep finding Nemo like you have to let go and and and then like she just yells at him and she's like you have to let go and he's like controlling over Nemo and that's why like he left and it's this whole like dynamic and Dory in such a pure sense is like you just have to let go if you want to like get further and like let this evolve and he like takes it in the sense of like you have to let go of Nemo and it's just beautiful.

24:34Pixar movies are the best. I remember watching that scene in marine bio class first period senior year and I had a mask on because I was in school with a mask. Yeah, and I had to put my mask over my face because I was tearing up. Tell me about what high school was like in COVID. Well, like a whole year, my whole junior year, I was online the entire time, not going. Because it was like, it was Zoom school, you know? Like, no one went to the campus. Were you just miserable? No, I was just like learning how to play the guitar and going on bike rides. And like, honestly panicking a little bit because of the weed.

Read the full transcript

25:14I had this like whole month where I like was very hazy because of like, I was smoking too much weed. But anyways, I was chilling. I was like learning how to play music and taking bike rides and like school was so easy and they couldn't hold you accountable for anything like how do you tell a kid to show up like I'd be like my camera's broken I can't I can't be on the class and it's like what are you gonna fucking go to my house and check my computer camera and so every kid did that and they're like what camera's broken sorry and you would just and I would go play the guitar while you were in class yeah that's kind of like what I did in college a bit yeah cause did you did you have like yeah yeah it was easy to cheat so easy are you a cheater no have you ever cheated have you ever been cheated on I hope not that would that would I'm big on the golden rule treat others how you want to be treated so it's it's the golden rule it's the golden rule so I don't cheat and because if someone cheated on me I would be so incredibly hurt have you ever wanted to cheat Well, I've never been in the position to be able to cheat.

26:24You've never had a freaking relationship? No. What? Your catch, man. Oh, my God. I did not think that that's the direction that was going in. Thank you so much. Yeah. Tell me about your writing process. I just play on the guitar and hum until I'm moved, or I'll hear a line or think of a line and try to build around that. It's kind of just like, you know. Oh. Yeah, just kind of like strumming my guitar, and then sometimes it's that. Sometimes it's just like banging on like a bunch of synths, whatever inspires me, and then I just follow it until it's over. So my favorite song of yours is Roommates.

27:01So did that start like with the little riff on the guitar? Yeah, it did. I remember I played it. I still have it somewhere on my phone. I played it into my like headphones on my iPhone GarageBand and just like demoed it out, and then I went on a walk, and then I like always forget. After I make a riff, I leave and then I come back and I hear it for the first time again because I don't really remember what it was. And then I was like, oh, this is good. And then I went out to my backyard and wrote the whole song. You just, it just flowed out. Just listening to it on my phone. Very musical family.

27:31Yeah. Did you have a, because you discovered you wanted to do, pursue music when you were like 16. Yeah. You taught yourself guitar. So what was the plan before that? I don't know. I was really into writing. Something creative, you know. I was just like down to just like be creative and like dress like Joseph Gordon-Levitt from 10 Things I Hate About You and go to high school and just like be cute and be into art. You know I've never seen that movie. What? Yeah. What are you waiting for? I don't know. I'm a TV guy. Do you watch TV? You're a TV guy. I would say I'm more of a movie guy, but I feel uncultured in most things.

28:08Do you watch any TV right now? Anything? Right now, no. I mean, I'm watching Euphoria. No, I can't because it's a big spoiler, and I opened Twitter and saw it first thing today. Okay, yeah, and I'm so off that side. I'm like, I don't see shit about Euphoria. So it's sick. Do you ever check Twitter? I don't have Twitter. Twitter created Vine. I like Vine. How old were you when Vine was a thing? Fifth grade. Oh, so you loved Vine. Yeah, it was hilarious. Like, Turricane Tortilla. Yeah, all of it. Yeah. Every time. Yeah, like, there was guys who just, like, created, like, had, like, a skit culture.

28:42like Casey Fry like I know the name yeah like he's like um what did he do like Nick Coletti like you don't know these guys I know the name yeah it's like these just like and they're still funny like they do like stand up whatever but like they just get in 7 seconds they made me laugh out loud and like were witty about it all in 7 seconds and it's just like it is a hard medium to do that yeah but I mean they really went short like they almost like were ahead of their time where they were like we're gonna make this so quick to consume yeah and then it went away forever yeah now we have TikTok did TikTok launch your career?

29:18yeah I mean TikTok is like to me that's like the hub like I see that as like that's just like where so much stuff is consumed and so like that's just like it's like saying like did like radio or like back in the day it's like how did your career launch it's like they like played your songs on the radio it's like they just play your songs on TikTok and that's how like anyone hears it apparently but uh yeah no I for sure am viral on TikTok yes super viral it was for roommates? yeah roommates blew up and chest pain were you nervous to put those out at all? no I was like I downloaded TikTok to put them out I was like this is purely a swallow your pride throw shit at the wall see what sticks like vibe and I was totally comfortable in that I wasn't like going around being like guys I'm like big on tiktok or like go go check out my tiktoks I was just like I hope like a bunch of random people see this and it blows up and then my instagram is kind of for like this is me oh how's that going your instagram is it activated yet julian do you have any answer as to why working on it you're like low-key bugging about it.

30:34It's like what? Sometimes I pretend I have fake eyelashes. Real? I do that. Luis, have you ever caught me doing that? If I get stressed out, I go like that. I also go like this. But I do it in a very serious way. That's so funny because what are you doing? Yeah, exactly. I'll fake eyelashes. I'll fake chew gum. I'll... Wow. Do you have any nervous tics that you do? No, just general tics, yes. But we can move on from that as well. Do you want to know what I'm therapist about today? Sure. Okay. I'm therapist about the fact that... You didn't have an answer before this. I guess I don't have an answer.

31:21I guess my therapist lately has been teaching me to do palms up. What the fuck does that do? It's just like palms up. Like you leave it to essentially Hashem. Like pinky up. No, pinky up is like mindset. Palms up is like in action.

31:44It's like you notice everything going on in the world. There's a little. Okay, I have this too. I do this in the shower. But I just, instead of palms up, it's let the water run over your head and listen to the drops of water. Oh, wow. What are you drinking on? Celsius and a punchline. pop poppy that I haven't opened yet. Which, but like the, okay, anyways, Celsius, like if I drank that Celsius, I think like it would be bad. Like I think I'd be, I've never had to do it on tour before. You've never had to drink caffeine. No, like no, sometimes I'll have like a sip of Dr. Pepper before I go on stage.

32:17I know I'm crazy, but, but no, like the whole, like I was actually, I was recording my album and it was like the, it was like the last week and we had to really get it done and it was like 2am and I knew I had to be up till 6am and I had like a quarter of a Red bull maybe like a half i fuck with red bull dude it tasted so good but i was freaking out for a while that's my drink at a bar rebel vodka yeah does that not just get you just like jacked bless you jackson i knew that was you it was jackson was it jackson was that you someone fest all right whatever be honest fuck we should bring jackson jackson you can come in jackson come in for like can we just do a quick section do you want to come sit go sit for a sec come thorough sit you guys are best friends yeah do you guys want to play the game where you two have to say the same word at the same time sure sure okay one also do you think we sound the same yeah how do you guys know each other besides being cousins that's how we know each other yeah we're family okay

33:23I'm okay let's just do it quick ready one two three okay basketball Oh, well, now it's quite easy, huh? Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. One, two, three. NBA. What'd you say? Color. You said orange, and you said basketball, and you couldn't get to the Knicks? Oh.

33:50Okay. Color and basketball? Start again. Wait, wait, wait. No, no, no. What you can do is color and basketball. No, you can't. That's not the rules of the game. Okay, yes, sir. one two three broccoli football broccoli okay okay one two three fitness oh yeah i feel you wait what'd you say fitness you said big green egg yeah okay oh i know where i'd go with this i think think you know where you'd go okay ready okay three two one steak

34:27Like, who are you?

34:33I was going to go meal prep. I've been doing that. Right. You've been talking about. Yeah. Well, because I'm doing air one, but like because the air one got a little out of hand, just like financially, it's just ridiculous. I love air one, but like that, that for me every day, it's just, I was like, okay, maybe I can split. So half the week I'm doing meal prep and I'm having someone do it for much more sustainable prices. And cook it for me and I just defrost it and eat it. Are you sustainable? As much as the next guy. OCD things I have to recycle. I'm OCD. You have OCD? Yeah, do you have actual OCD?

35:07Yes. Oh, yeah, me too. What's your OCD? It manifests in little tics and rituals. Me too! Oh my gosh, my shit's crazy. My shit's crazy too! I've been getting, I'm in a good pocket. Knock on wood, dude. Are you on meds? No, I've never done them, but I've been in therapy for it since I was like eight. Yeah. They've been trying to put me on meds for it forever. I know. This is the most I've ever talked about my OCD. Oh, we don't have to talk about it? No, it's totally fine. Let's just see where it goes. Okay. Okay. Well, I am on meds and in therapy for it, but I skip therapy for it every week. Nice.

35:40Do you do like the exposure therapy? Yeah. Like I used to not, well, I don't know if I want to tell you because I feel like, do you know when someone tells you their OCD and then you catch it? I won't okay so I can tell you yeah like I used to not be able to like add songs to playlists this is so classic like I would have to do it four different times and then what else I have something crazy with my phone right now right now it's been manifesting on my phone and it's so annoying because I'm on my phone so much and it's just so funny it's like I'll be able to like kill a tick and then it'll come back like ten times stronger and a new tick and I'm like damn I'm like I thought I had you and now all of a sudden I didn't even realize, but it's on my phone a lot right now with like, dude, so weird.

36:23But like every time I like, if I'm scrolling, like if I'm scrolling a song on Spotify, the bottom like song has to line up to where there's no of the line show. Yes. Yeah. When I take a screenshot, the little thingy that like scrolls up and down the little navigator bar has to disappear. And if I take a screenshot, I have to delete it. And then I can't take a new screenshot until that photo is deleted out of my recently Yeah. And right now putting on my shoes right now is like a movie. Yeah. Same with me and showering. It's just impossible. Oh my gosh. Took me. It took me. It took me so long to get out of the shower.

36:56I had to. I had to. I had to really work on that one. Yeah. If there's like a little bit of soap on me I have to restart the shower and do my whole thing again. Dude in faucets. Kill me. How. What. How do they kill you. They have to turn on the same. If it's ever two faucets at the same time like a hot and a cold. They have to turn on the same time. And go off at the same time. And if it's like a boom, start over. Or do you have magical thinking where you think something bad's going to happen? Oh my god, we're low-key, more similar than I anticipated. This has been OCD talk. Well, you know, a lot of people don't talk about it.

37:29It's like, it's intense as hell. And it's like, I don't even want to, do you get triggered by when people are like, oh, I'm so OCD about this? Yeah, I get really angry. It's like, just in my head, I'm like, you'll never know. It's okay. Well, because people didn't believe me in high school. And it was very frustrating because I'm very messy. I'm a messy eater. I'm messy I just like my whole life Oh my gosh we are similar I think we are too And I People would be like You don't have OCD Because you're so fucking messy And I'd be like No I think I do have OCD Because I googled it And this is what came up Yeah I've never been more sure of something That's how I feel as well And you've had it since you were I've had it since I was like seven Yeah same Literally my whole life Do you remember your first ritual ever?

38:07I remember Dude yeah I remember being like in I remember playing football On my cul-de-sac And being like if I do this, this is going to happen. Yes. And then nailing it and being like, that's how the world works. And then that was the rest of my life. Yep. Mine was I started to touch things evenly. And then I was like, and if I touch it evenly, good things will happen. I think I was in the pool. Yeah, it's like very childish stuff where you're like, oh, this makes so much sense. And now it's like cut to us. And actually the first time I ever saw it portrayed was on Girls on HBO when Hannah has an OCD episode.

38:43You should watch Girls. Yeah, Audrey loves that show. It's the best show of all time. She thinks Adam Driver is the one. Really? He is so hot. Yeah, just because of that show. He's so hot. Because I'm like, I see him in some other things, and I'm like, he's the one? But apparently he's so great in that show. He was in the Army. Uh-huh. Yes, I did know he was in the Army, and then he did Girls. Mm-hmm. Well, he did Tiny Furniture, her first short film. And then she... And then he did Girls. Yeah. Do you have a favorite song of your sisters? And you can't say Phoebe just because you covered it. Okay, well, that is my favorite one.

39:11but then I also love I love Silver Jubilee I cry to Silver Jubilee like almost every time I listen to it it's so funny I like have this moment when she goes I'm gonna tell my sister your secrets I just like why do you think that is because that's my sister she's talking about and I believe her because she does tell her all those fucking secrets and I just I'm like I know her oh that's so sweet it's super sweet that album is one of my favorite albums of all time yeah same it's fucking insanely good it's like actually we talked about it in my last episode how good it is she'll never top that I'm just kidding.

39:42Yo, she absolutely will. No, she will. Trust. I see. I'm seeing, I'm seeing. As you will top all your previous work with your upcoming album, Do That Again, out June 5th. Out June 5th. What's your favorite song off the album? It just switches all the time, but I think right now I really love the song Do That Again. It's the title track. And what else? Maybe the one called Obsessica. You have a song called Obsessica? Yeah. what's it about are you lying it's about being obsessed with girls and you just call it Obsessica yeah because there's like this bit at the end of the song where like I just start like rattling off girls names and it's like Jessica Rebecca you low key rap sometimes yeah low key do you ever freestyle I wouldn't make you do that now because it would make me uncomfortable but yeah it's the most uncomfortable thing ever yeah I don't often freestyle and if I do like I just like throw in like of a quick line and then step back out.

40:44I'm not like, and fucking also, like, totally killing the vibe. Yeah. And also just like, I think that's a thing is like, just in like boy culture, like dudes being like, dude, just lighten up and like freestyling with the boys in the car. Like, I'm like, that's the last thing I've ever related to. Like feeling, I, what I love is like methodically writing a rap very well thought out and sharing it with your friends. Oh, you're like a smart, a smart, a smart guy. Yeah, we're like, I'll with my friends sometimes, like, we'll all, like, we'll, like, make a groove, and then we'll all, like, write our own verses and, like, share them with each other, and, like, that's fun to me.

41:23But, like. Oh, my God, you guys are, like, all, like, a little, like, creative little. Yeah, I have, like, all little creative friends. Oh, my God, that's so amazing. It's awesome. That reminds me of, like, Joni Mitchell and all her friends in, like, the 60s. Yeah, they all, like, a good portion of them, like, dress like that, too, and it's a little funny to me. So you're, like, Joni Mitchell. Yeah. I'll be Joni uh huh the Laurel Canyon vibes yeah have you ever heard the Our House demo with Joni yeah oh I have it's amazing that's one of my favorite songs of all time Our House yeah I covered it on tour with those friends I'm talking about who are also in my wow how beautiful is that yeah so I am curious like after upon meeting Jackson what does he do for you he is I mean obviously first and foremost he's my cousin and my brother in my family love that but he's also a stellar assistant and he goes everywhere with me and makes sure that I have my head screwed on straight and makes sure that everything's running smoothly and helps me with stuff that I need to take off my plate you know like so an assistant yeah yeah so do you know about the tell me what's wrongs no so the pussy's right in when they tell us what's wrong.

42:43And honestly, I would love to hear your take on some of these. Let's go. My sister-in-law wants to do her gender reveal the day after I get married. I think it's actually insane to do it the day after our wedding that we are all driving five plus hours to and from. There are so many other days to choose from. Am I being insensitive, bitch? What should I do? Her reasoning is that all of our family is still in town by then. That's what I was going to say. That's super valid, actually. I was going to say that. I was like, if she wants to do it when everyone's in town, that kind of makes sense. Have you ever been to a gender reveal?

43:19Is that something you go to? Yeah, they're so fun. No. They're literally my favorite thing ever. Oh, yeah, no. When I was an assistant, I planned. Oh, tell me about your assistant. Jackson's listening. He could maybe learn a few things. Well, I was an assistant. Yeah, tell me about it. I realized I actually didn't plan my boss's gender reveal because I wasn't an assistant at that point but I planned his engagement party and I blacked out at the engagement party blacked out I've never blacked out in my life ever it's horrible it's the worst thing ever you wake up and you're like what happened but I haven't blacked out in a minute okay good I like that blacking out I just feel like I couldn't that's just so you not knowing what happened I can't imagine someone being invested in you and being like what happened Jake and you're like I don't know and you weren't there it's like so It's the worst thing ever.

44:05But in college, it's like a very big part of the culture, blacking out. Right. It's like, what are we going to do tonight? Blackout? Yeah, blackout. I was fucking not remember anything. Lit. If I was this girl, I'd be like, maybe you can wait like a day after. Well, actually, yeah, honestly, can I tell you why I understand why this girl is annoyed? Because she's getting married. And then all the photos the next day are going to be the gender reveal, not the marriage. I totally understand why it's annoying because it's her big weekend and there's only one wedding. You can do a gender reveal over Zoom.

44:35They're two different things, you know? It's like you wouldn't plan a gender reveal like it's a wedding. So she's putting all this towards her wedding, and then she's just kind of riding in off the effort that it is, you know? So I guess it's kind of like... It's like you're... You're kind of mooching off me. Yeah, you're mooching off of the fact that everyone's in town for my event that I planned. I see both ways, and I'm probably going to do that for most of these because I'm that fucking type of guy. But maybe not, maybe not. Hi, Jake and beautiful guest. Oh, thank you. Yeah. My roommate and her boyfriend have been stealing stuff from me and lying about it.

45:11Some of my more intimate possessions too. Ew. And it's really getting weird. I catch some of my clothes, remotes, chargers, et cetera in their room all the time and it's such a weird unspoken thing. How do I talk to them about this? I hate confrontation. This reminds me of... Is it with... Yeah. Is it with Emma Stone? No. Not Anne White. Not Anne Boleyn. Jane Eyre? Jane Eyre! oh my god, and she doesn't speak up for herself ever and everyone's so fucking rude to her she never says anything. Yeah, confrontation, you gotta work on that girl. Jane Eyre Nolan, wow. I was in Jane Eyre in high school.

45:47Oh, and she never says anything, right? Yeah, and I was like the bully in it. They all bully her? Yeah. What would you do if Jackson was stealing your stuff? You would say something immediately. For sure. I'm a little gray on like the personal because she was like some very personal items and then she was like the remote in my clothes which sound like very not that personal. So, like, I'm trying to break down the psychology. Maybe. How freaky is this? I assume she means, like, the other girl is taking her underwear. And the boyfriend, where does he come into play? Like, them as a team, it's starting to feel like this weird rouge, like, where they're, like, stealing.

46:19I'm just trying to feel like, is shit just laying around and she's overreacting? Or are they, like, teaming up against her? I'm on her side. Okay. And I would be, like, but it's two against one. How scary. yeah yeah they'll be like we didn't steal your shit I think you just gotta go roommate to roommate and then have her extend it to the boyfriend it doesn't need to be a group talk smart and also take photos take photos of what she stole yeah be like take photos of it in her room be like you stole this look yeah yeah if you're confronting a liar you need to have proof you're very right have you ever been in a that's this have you ever been in a situation with a liar or a relationship with a liar no and lying is a huge no go for me right as yes yeah like Like, I just, because I don't lie.

47:04Do you think I could get my ears pierced? For sure. Louise says it would be really bad for the brand. For me. Like, Jake's just got to be Jake. And if that means piercing his ears, well, if he wants to do it, he's got to do it. Can you picture me with, like, one tiny hoop here? Yeah, also, like, there's nothing wrong with evolving. Like, if that's not you a year ago, it would totally be you now. When did you get your ears pierced? I was, like, 16. Oh, okay. So that's been you. It's been me. but like I only wanted to do it because I started posting Instagram dumps and I felt like you know like like artsy like I posted in my Instagram dump today like a photo of a fire hydrant spilling out water and everyone swiped over and I was like do you really need this and I said yes yes and then okay I have a question do you would you feel like do you feel like you could get the earring and then if it wasn't for you a week later take it out and like that's how I thought it worked but Louise is apparently that you have to keep it in for three months.

48:02Whatever, but I'm just saying, would you feel fine being like, oh, I tried a thing and it failed in front of everyone? Yeah, I do that consistently. Okay, then you're good. I'd be worried if you were like, oh, I have to really commit to this. Just try it. If it doesn't work, take it out, right? She really does not want me to get an ear in. I'm fighting for you. Thank you. Bye, Louise. My boyfriend is constantly sports betting all night and day. He recently spent his whole paycheck on betting in three days. He even asked me for money so he would be able to continue to do it. Oh, what a bomb. This is a nightmare.

48:35He has money in his savings, but should I be concerned? I mean, beyond concerned. Yeah. Gambling addiction is so bad. Yeah. I mean, this one's black and white. Yeah. You think, what, break up with him? No, don't go right to breaking up with him. He'll probably just lose even more money. I think just like basically I would give him an ultimatum. You've got to pick me or the gambling, and then let's see how he rocks. Have you ever given someone an ultimatum before? I know what I need in a relationship, and I'll be a great partner if we can hold up the same standards for each other. And I'm like, if someone's not meeting my standards respectfully, I'll be like, okay, this won't work for me as a partnership.

49:14And so I'll be like, you have to kind of – I've given the ultimatum of like, can you understand where I'm coming from or not? and if you don't then it's okay then it's not gonna work you're very emotionally intelligent thanks have you gotten that before? yeah I think it's all the therapy I did since I was a little kid yeah I was about to say you must your parents seem great they're great actually I've met your mom you've met Jill I've met your mom and she was the nicest no she's the best person I've ever met in my entire life and I've actually never forgotten it Audrey hosted a reading with Substack and she so kindly invited me to read talk about OCD.

49:53My OCD was almost like don't say the word kindly. Lately I've been having issue with the word kindly. Do you know what I mean? I just feel you so hard. Oh my gosh I feel you so hard. I have I'm not even going to say I couldn't write the word thus all of college. Still can't by the way. I have a crazy one that I'm not going to say because I'm like I need to harness it before I let it out into the world. Keep it. Keep it. It's on par with what you're saying. A bunch of my friends and I moved to NYC last summer after we graduated college but now a lot of them are moving away for new jobs or grad school either this summer or next summer.

50:23I love New York and want to stay, but I'm scared I'm going to be stranded friendless this time next year. Any advice for making post-grad friends? Well, you're in the easiest city to make friends in the entire world. New York is, I feel like everyone wants to make a friend in New York. It is, it's like if you want to go make friends, stay in New York. Right. Do you ever want to move to New York? Yeah, I actually lived in New York for a year. Oh. And I loved it. Where'd you live? I lived in the East Village. And it was like my version of college because I didn't go to college, and I felt like being in the East Village was that for me.

50:54So, like, how was it college for you? Just being around kids my age. You know, like, when I was in L.A. and I wasn't going to college, there wasn't a hub for me to, or, like, kind of, like, a circle, like, a literally geographic, like, place to be in where, like, I was. Right. Plus, I wanted to, like, go drive to a college campus, which, like, but the streets are the campus, so I could just be on the street and feel surrounded by my peers. Oh, how fun. Did you go to Oregon for, like, a week? I dropped out the week before I was supposed to go to Oregon got it which everyone gets confused I was a week away from going to Oregon right and you were like fuck this I was like no yeah yeah school wasn't for me but you went to school I went to USC right because you were talking you were like you don't need to get this reminds me of college Air One reminds me of college and I was like okay LA college I said Air One reminds me of college yeah or you said like something in the Air One that reminded you of college I guess it does I went to Air One a bunch in college there you go the Silver Lake Air one actually which is underratedly the best one well what would you prescribe them that post grad girl I would prescribe the movie Postgrad what's that?

51:57it's a movie about post grad and I saw it when I was like in third grade so I had no idea what the fuck was going on but now I'm sure maybe I should rewatch it yeah I would just like just be fearless just like conquer whatever social fears you have and something good will come out of it love that Yeah. Did you watch Stranger Things? Yeah, I didn't finish. I've watched, like, I feel like I've watched, like, 70 % of the episodes, and I couldn't tell you, like, a single detail about the show. Do you like, like, thrillers? Dark stuff, or no? Not too dark. I just went and saw Obsession. Oh, my God.

52:30We've been talking about it all day. Did you see it? I've heard it's unbelievable. It's so good. It's super spooky. I had a little bit of a night, nightmare vibe. You love nightmares? The night before. Well, it was like, I woke up in the middle of the night, and then I couldn't get back to sleep every time I'd fall asleep like right before it would be like boo like in my head. Have you ever, do you ever when you fall asleep get the muscles basms? Yeah. Is that like a boy thing or is that like a? No, it's an anxiety thing I think. I have the worst anxiety dreams where my teeth are falling out, people are pulling them out.

53:00I had a dream the other day. My best friend Cassidy was sleeping over and she woke up to me screaming at her like, no, you can't, you can't. You were doing that in real life? Yeah, and I woke up and she was like, what the fuck just happened? That's dark. I know. That's okay, though. That's a part of your makeup, and that's why you're you. Oh, thank you. Yeah, yeah. Are you excited to tour? Yeah, I love touring because I tour with my besties. Yeah, I went on tour, and I would go and speak, and I went with Louise and Manny. You did the bus? I did the bus. Do you have a bunk or a room? I have a room, but sometimes I just do the bunk.

53:33Bunk, I feel like everyone gets a better sleep. Yes. Yeah. There's like a lot of rattling around in the back room. Oh, this one's for you because you hate liars. Basically, my best friend since childhood has turned into a white liar these days. Never really to me sometimes, but, like, this is a huge red flag for me and other people, and I want to bring it up to her, but she always writes it off as cute. Mm-hmm. Well, at least she admits it. We've known each other for 10 years. How do I make her realize it really is that deep? Um, you, like, actions speak louder than words. You gotta just, she's gotta, if she, like, she's gotta, like, there's gotta be a true consequence.

54:08Like, and I don't know how deep, it's her best friend. like they two love each other it's a slippery slope because it's like you don't want to like X someone out but like I think space or like letting her like sit with what she's doing is better because if you just tell someone who's like a general liar to stop lying like they do they say it's cute I think there needs to be something bigger than saying stop oh yeah does Jackson ever lie to you? dude yeah Jackson sometimes can frickin' fib the truth but that's you know he doesn't do it as much anymore really? because he knows out if I can hate lying, but it's like, I'm like, just keep it a stack with me.

54:44That's what like besties are for. Right.

54:49Were you just lying? No, I can't lie. I'm a very anxious person and it's now manifesting into me being weirdly, weirdly bloated at the most random times. And it's affecting my workouts and daily routines. Wait, I relate to this. Could this actually have to do with my stress levels? And how do you recommend you lead with stress that impacts your body? Well, I don't know, but that does happen to me all the time. I'm now realizing. When you're stressed, do you feel bloated? I think so, yeah. I think I bloat myself because I'm so stressed out all the time because your cortisol levels are so high. Okay.

55:20That makes sense. I would take medication for that. Like de-bloating medication? No, I would take anti-anxiety medication that you go see a psychiatrist. Okay, yeah. But you know healthcare is impossible in this country. Godspeed, girl. Yeah. I have relationship OCD So sometimes I spiral Thinking that my boyfriend Isn't the right person for me Something terrible Is going to happen to him If we stay together Etc Recently I opened up To my friend About how I was feeling And she told me I should listen to my Quote gut feeling And now she keeps trying To convince me To break up with him She knows I struggle With relationship OCD But I feel like She doesn't really get it Any advice Well see the gut feeling And OCD is very difficult At least for me Because I have a gut feeling Constantly but really It's just anxiety Yeah, I'm big on trusting your instincts.

56:06And I don't know this person, so I can't read. If I see someone and I know their instincts are right, the best advice you can always give those people is trust your instincts. But her instincts are saying that if she stays with the guy, then something bad will happen. Yeah, so that's a distortion. Okay, elaborate. That's anxiety talking and you're making up for your anxiety with irrational decisions. and like... But deep down... That's been me, by the way, this whole time. I've just been really chill about it. Me too. Yeah. What's up with that? I don't know. It happens to me all the time. Have you heard me do it?

56:42Or is that the first time you heard it? Because it's been happening to me this entire episode. Oh, no. I haven't heard it. But it's been happening to you too? Yeah, I've just been like... Anyway, look. Yeah. Me too. Wait, okay, wait. Keep building on this because this one's exciting. Okay, I don't know. Well, so she's saying, because this is kind of dark and crazy, but like she thinks that she loves her boyfriend. I know. I'm just, I don't know. She just, I just burped. She loves her boyfriend, but she thinks if she stays together with him, something bad's going to happen, which there's no justification to that.

57:13That's just a full blown like, that's a worry that she's having. So should she leave her boyfriend? Because now her friend is like, you should leave him. No, that your friend's giving you bad advice. If you love him, stay with him and fight through this feeling and you'll come out the other side. and tell your boyfriend about it or go to therapy about it because Jake and I can only do so much in these like 20 seconds. It sounds like something you really gotta dive into. I know. Yeah. What do you think? Exactly what you just said. Well, like if that was me, I totally understand that. She seems like very selfless, this girl.

57:47Like something bad's gonna happen to her boyfriend and not her. No, for sure. That's sweet. But she loves him. It's like, what the hell? Don't let like, you have to fight for what you love and you have to fight through the distortions and stuff and that'll be the best for her life. Even though it's like the quick fix is break up with him, but that's not going to solve anything. And then also that's going to fuel the next distortion in your brain to feel like, okay, well then I'll just get, it's going to make the evil thing in your mind feel like it can just make you do these things. Right. And that's not how you should live your life.

58:21What music are you listening to these days? I'm listening to really chill music in the last week. Dude, the Suf John Stevens song, which is the saddest song ever, the one where Cardinal hits the window. He did the Call Me By Your Name soundtrack, yeah? Yeah, yeah. It's the one that's... Is it off the carry and low? Da, da, da, da, da, da, and I told you what happened. Like folk music and stuff? I'm down, I'm down. It's all vibes, it's all pockets. It's why you want to get your ears pierced, because you're just feeling it right now. I know but it is so not me now that we've like continued to talk about the ear piercing like if I was sitting here with an ear piercing I'd be so uncomfortable yeah well maybe it's not you maybe you know him better than you know he knows himself do you feel that way yeah she totally did while I was watching her like watch me try to convince you to do that she was just like an idiot they freaked out when I pranked do you love pranking your friends pranking I feel bad really fast oh I don't I love that I love a good prank.

59:24It's my favorite thing on Planet Error. But, like, once it's, like, it gets so sad. I know. Like, when they're, like, defenseless. One time I told Mandy I was going to be on Real Housewives of Salt Lake City. She was so excited. I've never seen her. She actually does this shit to me all the fucking time. Like, what? He'll just be, like, he'll just say something that doesn't exist. And just, like, he has such a stone-cold face, like, with, like, telling me stuff that, like, sounds real but isn't real. And I'll just, like, believe him. Like, what? Dude what was the dildalator

59:57Explain the dildalator thing Well he has to come back Cause I can't hear Yeah come back in So Malcolm's car Had Was this a Oh flat tire Yeah Got a flat tire So I had to bring it in And like get it checked out And they had sent me the Report back And there was like All this shit wrong with it But it was gonna cost like Two thousand dollars But I was just sitting there I think we got home like late And I was like yeah they said like it'd be$2 ,000 for like the dildo lady on the bottom of the car and he was like not really like paying attention or something and he was like bro just like give him the money or like whatever he was like just fix the car it was like whatever and then I like go around the car I'm like bro the dildo lady and he like looked at me and then I just like couldn't stop making fun of him for like that's a prank that's a prank that's a prank I like pranks my friend Matt does that all the time he'll point to like Meryl Streep and be like don't you just love Nicole Kidman man.

1:00:52Sounds like some shit you would do. Yeah, I do. You remind me a lot of Matt, actually. Shout out, Matt. Yeah. You're over it. Yeah, he was literally like, yeah, dude, just like the tires are 1 ,000 and then like you could get the gas caps fixed or whatever and then like the dildo later is 2 ,000 and I was like, just do it. Do you guys live together? Yeah. Your roommates? Yeah. Yeah. We travel, we're also like traveling so much so it's like we are, we are, we're just wherever, wherever he goes. I go. Are you a good traveler? It's easier when you have a team. I have a tour manager and I have Jackson.

1:01:29They make sure I don't lose anything. It's nice to have a team that's watching over you. Comforting. They just make sure if I have a problem, I can text people, which is not a real way to live. Whoops. It is what it is. Yeah, for sure. I got to write these songs. Well, Malcolm, what did we learn today? We learned that we're more similar than we thought. Yeah. We learned that this is a great vibe in here. You like it? Yeah, I love it. This is great. I had fun with you. I had a blast. I'm actually stoked. I think this is really good. Yeah, I think it's really funny. Yeah. And we learned, I don't know, there's a flip-flops moment.

1:02:07You took your shoes off. I did. We learned that maybe hoop earring ultimately isn't for you, but we're not writing it off. But if I go get one, I'll go get one with you. Text me. Really? For sure. and maybe someone told me yesterday I should get an eyebrow piercing which I'm not gonna do Julian I actually think it would look good me too so do it if that's your truth if you get the ear if I get the ear you'll do the eyebrow okay I'll do it I would literally do it next week okay I would do it today but my physical therapist is coming to check out my wrist because if you can hear it's cracking it's cracking did you look that up on Google yeah it's because I broke my wrist when I blacked out when I was in 11th grade and And it's never been the same since.

1:02:51But it's just catching up to you now. Kind of, yeah. My body is kind of, I'm going through my Saturn return. Kind of. Love it. Yeah. Well, this is awesome. Yeah, I love this. Yeah, this was really fun. I would love to have you back anytime. His new album, Do That Again, is out June 5th. It's out now. It's out now. Oh, it's out now. Or do I look somewhere? Bye, pussies.

1:03:22You
