In short
Adam Scott discusses his career and personal growth, especially how he approached playing “innie/outie” versions in Apple TV’s Severance, plus his experiences with fame, self-image, and parenting. The episode also includes the hosts’ chaotic banter about haircuts, tattoos, travel mishaps, and relationship/friendship advice.
Guest backgrounds
Adam Scott is the star of Severance (Apple TV) and the Netflix movie The Whisper Man (out Aug 28). He previously gained major career momentum from Step Brothers and starred in Party Down. He trained at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts (theater school) and is married with children (Frankie mentioned).
Key claims
Scott says Severance’s success wasn’t expected; he aimed for the “same actor” finale videos to quickly feel like two distinct characters. He credits opening up on camera (not keeping walls up) as a turning point for his career “landing.” He describes being shaped by being overweight in late elementary/middle school and leaning into self-deprecating humor.
Notable examples
filming the finale’s camera-to-camera dialogue in his apartment with his phone; Party Down initially getting only about 13,000 viewers on its finale; meeting his wife at a Hollywood bar (The Cat and the Fiddle) in 1998.

0:28Jake, your buzz looks amazing. Oh yeah. Let's start there. Let's start with my buzz. I buzzed my hair. And now I want a thigh tat. Well, I told Jake when he gets his hair buzzed, he has to get a thigh tat. I think like a tattoo and a buzz is just like a hot combination. Do you think we have time to go today before we might? Yes, because I also want one. And it's 1.30 p.m. How long does it take? 20 minutes? And then, like, how long can you not expose it to sun for? I mean, it doesn't matter. I expose mine to sun, like, an hour after. If it's on your thigh, it won't be in the sun, I don't think.
0:58Also, I want to dye Jake's hair lighter. I do, too. So which one? Pick one today. Lighter? Oh, I would love to dye your hair today. But I don't want it to be bleached. I honestly think bleached buzzes are the hottest thing a guy can have. but okay but for you i would start just like yellow one shade pink not i would love to do his hair pink we could do pink i'm gonna do my hair you have to bleach it first and then exactly should you just do it today i'm down like i would do anything so do you think that would do lighter don't do pink i think you should start with lighter and then we can play around with it but before i get my tattoo i want to do the severance procedure sorry what's that it's when they like you go it's like you know how people do like ketamine therapy okay it's like when they like put like a little electrons on your brain and for like the next hour like you like it severs your like frontal lobe and you don't feel like you don't remember like you become another person for that hour like your brain so you don't feel the pain you don't feel the pain like people do a childbirth you're not tattoos are not even bad i have literally 18 uh-huh and like mine are tiny But it's just nice sometimes.
2:11So that's probably why. It's nice sometimes. Like people do it for childbirth. Like people get severed for childbirth. I need to do that for childbirth for sure. Yeah. Terrified of having a baby. But we're adopting. We'll be fine. We'll adopt one. I would like to birth the other. But you know. It's very important. Well you can get severed for that. And I'd like you to be in the room. Absolutely. Holding my hands. You've never heard of the severance procedure? No. Ever. Also you don't need that for a tattoo. Like it's easy. It like does not hurt. I hate needles but I. Well you don't need needles.
2:40they just put a little chip right here. Jake, that's, like, more pain than getting a tattoo. No, but it doesn't hurt, though. And you sever. Like, people do it for work sometimes. Wait, what? Like, people, like, it's like, if you're, like, handling, like, high government intel, you go in the, like, you go to work and you get severed for the day. So you're, like, they'll call it, like, their, like, right now we would be outies. And then your innie would be your severed version. What the actual fuck are you talking about? And also, you don't need this to get a fucking tattoo. Look it up. Severance procedure.
3:17I'm not kidding. I'm like not kidding. Like, it's all over TikTok. You guys. I hate both of you. So tonight we have on Adam Scott, who stars in the hit show Severance on Apple TV. You do this to me every time. How are you always in on it? I don't know. I just ripped. You thought that was real? Well, at first, and then you started talking about a chip in your head. And I'm like, what the fuck? Babe. I really missed you. Babe. We've had a lot of changes in our lives. We've had a lot of changes. I buzzed my hair. I just went to Germany. Yeah, how was Dusseldorf? It was fun. In your castle? Yeah, I was in a castle.
4:02I didn't sleep. I couldn't sleep there. Right. You were in the factory? I was in the factory. I was in the factory making sure sauerpuss got made. I hung out with a lot of Germans. And how was that? Awesome. They're very lovely. Wow. My Schmetterling. Did you know I'm German? Really? Really? Yeah, I actually am, but I don't know what percent. Nine. Right, babe. I have other things to say. I get a text from Will yesterday saying he found a pastor for me. and he really thinks I need church. You burst into flames. I would walk into church and I would actually light on fire. Actually, as of late, you've been...
4:46As of late, I've been great. Cassidy is low-key one of the most emotionally intelligent people I've ever met in my entire life. You always say that, but yeah, it's true. I will give myself that. It's because you analyze things very hard. I do. I'm an observer also. I can watch a room and I won't speak, but I'll observe everyone's behavior and I'll just like think about it, but I will never say anything. You do say something every time. Every time. So I do say something actually. And it's always about you. You always start a fight when you're drunk. Only to you. You do too. You both do. Yeah, I hate when you.
5:19Actually, you started a fight with me. Will got a huge fight with me the other day. No. Yes, you did. You always say that I'm the one to start fights. Both of you do the same thing. No, I don't. Why would I ever want to fight on a night out? You walk up to me and do it. You always do it. Why did I do that? First time I see you, you said hi. Yeah, but he got so angry at me. I heard about this, babe. I'm so sorry. You did? Oh, from who? I did. From what little birdie? Jake. He called me in the AM. Very anxious. Oh, yeah. What are you going to be for Halloween? I don't know. I haven't thought about it, but I do love Halloween.
5:52What were you last year? I love being able to dress slutty, even though I dress slutty every day. It's the one holiday you're allowed to be naked. What were you last year? Okay, something's wrong. I don't remember what we, what were we last year? I'm like not able to like think right now. What were we last year? I just got off a flight. I told you that, but Jake made me film right when I got to his house. I got off a flight maybe what, 40 minutes ago? And they didn't let you off the plane. They didn't let us board. You have terrible luck with planes. You have terrible luck with planes. Cass got off, Cass has lost her bag now twice.
6:32I don't know what the fuck is in the air with my luggage but I just got back from Europe and I literally was sitting there with Sally Peyton and Julia and I was like making a joke like imagine our luggage doesn't get doesn't come back and I'm like I have a really weird feeling my luggage isn't coming back and I'm like standing there and I checked mine in with Peyton and Peyton's comes down and I was like that's weird I put mine right behind hers and that made me super nervous and I was like no there's no way like this can't happen to me again it just happened to me in January and all of a sudden Julia's comes Sally's comes and I'm like no no there's no fucking way my the luggage thing stops like fully stops there are two people left with no luggage I look at them and I go your luggage isn't here and I'm not kidding I actually was like there is no actual way yeah my luggage was on the next flight because it was um 23 pounds overweight another issue have we spoken about on here when she lost her luggage with Frontier or no she lost her luggage with Frontier and she went up to the Frontier worker and she said where I need help my luggage is gone and she saw them googling on their computer what to do when someone's luggage is on.
7:52Let me actually go back to this story, and then I'll stop talking for a little. But it was me, Peyton, and Sally. I feel like I'm talking the whole time. I don't care. I'm listening. I'm listening. Me, Peyton, and Sally chose to fly Frontier Airlines, and I don't know why the fuck we did that. My mom was like, that was your first mistake, which like, yeah. We literally were like, we're not paying over this amount of money to fly to Miami, whatever. So we chose the cheapest airline, and we get off the flight. Well, first of all, your flight was delayed until 2.30 a.m. No, this isn't even a possibility.
8:23Like, there's no red eyes going from Miami to New York. And all of a sudden, we get a notification. Our flight is moved to 2.50 a.m. Like, is that a thing? Well, the latest flights out are the ones that normally get moved and pushed. But that's smack ass in the middle of the night. Smack ass. Smack dab. It was insane. Anyway, my luggage did not make it. and I went to the person and she's Googling what to do when someone's luggage is lost. And I go, ma 'am, do you work here? And she's like, mm-hmm. And I'm like, are you helping me get my luggage? I'm really confused. She has a Frontier Airlines badge.
9:01I should fucking take it. I put it on myself. Because by the way, I ended up helping every other person who lost my luggage. There's a line behind me. And I'm looking on my phone, chat, ABT-ing. what the fuck do I'm calling front to your airlines customer services girl's supposed to be working there she's typing on the keyboard has no idea what she's fucking doing by the way like it was a shit show I got it back a week later because I moved my ass every night she went she went to JFK every night for one week and guess where my luggage was in a cage in a cage the worst part is that the Thursday before I got it I got it on Friday afternoon Thursday they open the door and they go that your luggage i go right there thank god like holy fuck all my shit's in there they go you can't get it today i said why he goes i don't have the key i was like you don't have the key you just opened the door so anyway i had to go back on friday and get it it was gnarly that was a really dark period oh god hey am i styling my buzz correctly yeah i love it Yes, okay.
10:07And I love that link. Can I tell you one thing that I just want to tell you? Yeah. I want to shave the top a little more. No, I kind of like the link like that. Really? Just because it's kind of fuller up here. For the first go round though. So should we get tattoos today? I'm down to get a tattoo. I really want to dye your hair darker. I mean, like. Everyone I tell is like, what? Oh, I like it. I like the banana peel, not the banana portion of it. Yeah, the peel. The peel. The peel. The peel. Yes. I would pay to get a matching tattoo with you, but I know you're not going to. You can get a banana peel.
10:38I don't know if that's fitting for me. I don't either. A banana peel on my arm? I don't think you should get a banana peel, no. No. It doesn't really match your skeleton. I got a skull on my ankle, and Will had a heart attack about it. He said, please don't do it. Please don't do it. And you know what? I was proved wrong. It looks great. What does the skull mean to you? I just, I don't know. That's the worst part. I was in a weird era. You know when it was. I mean. The beginning of this year. You've had so many different hairstyles. We are not talking about the one I just sent. That was so mean that both of you, both of you were in Miami with me and let me go out like that.
11:13Wait, did you see my get up? Did you see my get up? Will had a cropped leather jacket and a mop on his head. I had a silver metallic leather jacket on and a mullet. And my hair was literally maroon. Mind you, I posted that. I posted that. He posted it and I'm in the mirror like this. And he's literally next to me thinking - Cropped leather jacket. Did you guys miss me or what? A lot. Beyond. Tonight on Therapist, we have Adam Scott, the star of Severance on Apple TV, which is one of the best shows on television. He is also the star of the new Netflix movie, The Whisper Man, out August 28th, which I got to see and it is amazing.
11:51Enjoy the episode. I love you, pussies. My daughter says, please tell him, I think he's the voice of our generation. and that I watch him every day. Stop it. What's your daughter's name? Tell her to come here. She didn't drive today because she wasn't feeling well this morning, so she had to get around. You know, I just got over a cold. You did? Yeah. Bummer. You know, I have not been sick in... I have to admit, I fell asleep in the car on the way here, But I haven't been sick in like two years. Well, welcome to Therapist. Thank you. Thanks for being here. Thanks for having me, Jake. I'm such a fan.
12:39I'm a fan of yours as well. Are you really? I am. I thought you were terrific in the movie, and I, of course, had seen you do things before then. But my daughter is, as you know, a huge fan of yours. stepbrothers was like my first like big it wasn't my first big thing but it was like the first big thing that ended up mattering do you know what i mean like you can do you know how like if you're in showbiz for a while there there's so many things that happen where you're like oh this is gonna be the thing and then it's it's not and it just kind of no one cares and you're like oh, maybe this is going to be the thing, and then it's not, and it just kind of goes, and no one cares.
13:25Stepbrothers was the first thing that sort of, like, actually helped coalesce a career together. Did you think Party Down was going to be that thing? I never thought Party Down was going to be anything, which is part of why it was so fun, is that none of us thought anyone would ever see it. because we were on Starz at a time when they weren't really making TV shows. And then it started airing. No one was watching it. But we were having so much fun doing it, and we had kind of a chip on our shoulder like, our show's awesome, and no one's watching it, but who gives a shit? And we were just having such a blast and loved each other so much that it was like, who cares right like that's why it's awesome is because while we were making it we weren't making it for uh to to to for a career advancement at all we were making it because we thought it was great yeah and so that sort of lives inside of it and then eventually it did catch on way more than any of us ever thought it would when did it catch on did it go on streaming on netflix It was on Netflix I think it started catching on after it was cancelled Right Like a couple of years after Like I remember like a year after it was cancelled We started talking about doing a movie So it had sort of caught on by then But when it was actually on The final episode got 13 ,000 viewers Like no one was watching it 13 ,000 viewers 13 ,000 viewers Yeah Yeah.
15:12That's low. That's low. That's low. Yeah. Wow. I know. Isn't that crazy? And it's become a cult classic. Yeah, yeah. Did you expect Severance at all to take off the way it did? No. I mean, we certainly hoped that people would be into it, but we also kind of thought it was maybe too weird and didn't really know. I mean, by that point, I'd been doing it long enough that I knew that you never know if anything's going to... be popular or whatever. So I always just assume either everyone's going to hate it or it's going to do nothing and people just shrug. So we really didn't know, but we're pleased that people did.
16:00I mean, I watched that in college. You did? Yeah. I was like day one. The finale came out. Yeah. And my roommate, best friend Brett, I said, you need to watch this right now. Yeah. Because that's the best finale in television history. Oh, cool. She's alive. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Iconic. Oh, good. I'm so glad. Thanks. Okay, so in season two. Yeah. When you go back and, was it the finale or the penultimate episode that you go back and forth as the severed version of yourself and record those videos? That was in the finale. Yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah. What was that like to film? it was hard um because i'm just always afraid of things being shitty you know like i just want things to be great and so when it's something like that it's like this has such a such a high bar like in order for this to work it has to be really good because if it's an eighth of an inch off in one direction or the other, it's going to be corny and or stupid.
17:06It's kind of the whole show is like the whole, the whole like idea and the whole world and the tone is something that is so hyper specific that if you're just a little off in one direction or the other, the whole thing kind of falls apart, right? Which is part of what makes it special. And part of what makes it so much fun and so challenging to make is that it's a small small target and so that scene is one of those where I just thought like we really have to get this right and that all started with the writing because it's a really hard thing to write um properly um and those guys did an incredible job um but shooting it was uh was challenging because I shot all of it in my apartment you know uh just with my phone just so I would have something on set to to work oh you like rehearsed it got it yeah and and and I just wanted needed something to because I had that camera and so I was talking into a camera so I needed uh something on the screen to talk to so I shot both sides of in my apartment.
18:21There you go. Very proactive. And, and then as we went, we were recording as we were shooting, cause I'm talking into a camera. And so we started being able to use that. It was just a matter of like, I, what I, okay, here's, here's hopefully a succinct way of saying it. It's not boring. The thing that I really wanted is for the novelty of it, the novelty of this being the same actor, I wanted that to wear off as quickly as possible and for it to just be a scene where two people are talking. Oh, wow. Do you know what I mean? Yeah, I know exactly. You wanted it to feel like two completely different people.
18:57It just, it was important that it's these two different characters that the audience has grown accustomed to seeing and knew exactly where each one was at emotionally and what they needed from the other. And I just wanted the conversation to occur without it being like, oh, look, it's the same guy. Do you know what I mean? Because that's not that interesting at the end of the day. So we just wanted the story to be interesting and the characters to be, I don't know, it is kind of boring. We wanted them to each have their own autonomy. Yeah, yeah. And Ben Stiller, who directed the episode, was great.
19:38And he and Jeff, who edited it, did a great job too. Do you know Trudy? Oh, yeah, of course. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. We went to college together. Really? Yeah. Oh. I just filmed her short. Is she an actor? No, she's a director. Oh, good for her. Yeah. That's great. Oh, so she directed it. Mm-hmm. Oh, that's awesome. Yeah, she's amazing. Yeah. But she was like, I remember when we all found out she was working on Zephrens, we were so excited. That's cool. Where did you guys go to school? USC. You went to USC. Film school? No, I went to PR school. She went to film school. PR school. She went to film school.
20:10No wonder it's all working for you. You went to PR school, so you are able to sort of harness people's attention in an interesting way. I guess. Is that what you mean? Yeah, but I never really learned anything. I cheated on all my tests. We learned about the history of PR. I barely remember that. Well, that's not going to help you. Exactly. That's my point. That's why I didn't listen. It's more about who you are and how you put it out into the world and how much of yourself you're willing to share. Was that ever a thing for you where you're like, how much of my life do I want to share? I don't feel like my success started to actually stick until I was able to really kind of face up to really sharing myself with the camera.
21:01Do you know what I mean? Like if you have walls up because you're like protecting yourself or you're afraid of showing too much of yourself or vain or embarrassed or whatever, that's going to show on camera. And it wasn't until I was able to just sort of open up and share whatever was happening with the camera. That's when things started landing a little bit. Does that make sense? That makes complete sense. Do you feel like there's a role that you like really did that in? Like that you were able to open up and notice that? Yeah, Party Down. It's a great show. We watched that in reference to, because we were writing the pilot for, I'm in development with Hulu now.
21:46We like reference Party Down a lot. Oh yeah, that's cool. So you're aware of like public perception and image and have been. Yeah, I was very, very aware of it. Far, probably too much, but every high school kid is. I was, I am always aware. Yeah. But that's because my parents were super aware of like, Yeah. They were like, who's like, where do you think you got that from? I mean, I was always very, very into how I was presenting myself and planned my outfits specifically. Even if they looked totally like nothing, it was all very deliberate. Were you like that in high school? I wouldn't plan my outfits, but in high school, and today, and in college, so forever, I care what people think of me and how I'm perceived.
22:42So yes. I mean, I think for me, because in middle school, I was heavy. And you become, or I became, very, very self-conscious. And so when that happened, rather than becoming the outcast at the back of the classroom, I decided to lean into it. And I like, it was the year Pretty in Pink came out. So I dressed exactly like Ducky. I wore like big blazers and bolo ties and pegged my pants and wore like, you know, just like dressed exactly like him and kind of tried to like start this whole persona so I could be like the sidekick to the hot girl. That's how I felt too. That's how I felt too. I was heavier set.
23:37When I was in like fifth and sixth grade. Yeah. And then I lost a bunch of weight at the end of sixth grade. But I think it like shaped who I was. Yeah. Because I wanted to, I just remember being like, I don't know if you felt this way, but I was like, if I'm going to be in this room, like I'm going to make you laugh. Yes. And that's what will be my gift to this room. It won't be how I look. It won't be what I wear. It'll be my ability to make you laugh at me. That's right. Yeah. That's right. And that actually hurts too. Yeah. Right? I mean, you don't realize how much it hurts until one day you're like, wait, that hurt.
24:11Yeah. Till you're out of that phase and looking back and like, whoa. Yeah. I think I'm like in that phase right now still. I'm very self-deprecating. Well, yeah, me too, to a fault. And my wife is always telling me like, stop saying that it's a fluke that you have a career. You say that? All the time. All the time. Do you say it so much that you end up believing it? Well, what I say it about is Step Brothers, because getting that job, someone had the job before me and had to bail because of schedule. And so they had to cast the role quickly. And so whenever I say that, because I'm asked about that movie all the time.
24:57So whenever I say like, well, it's kind of a fluke that I got the role. Naomi, my wife is just like, you have to like, what are you doing? Like, stop it. Like, but I feel like it's, I have to, but I think, but I think those years of being heavy, particularly in late elementary and middle school, it was so formative and so kind of, I still feel exactly like that. And I feel like that's where, like if that didn't happen to me, I wonder what kind of person I would be if those years didn't happen to me because it was so, it so shaped me. Right. Because it's so humiliating the way people treated me.
25:44Yeah. Wow. Yeah. I did not know that about you. I mean, I wasn't like, I mean, you know, it happens to, I mean, it's a part of puberty for a lot of kids. It's, you know, I'm sure that's exactly what happened to you. Yeah. And no, I stopped eating lunch. You did. Yeah. Well, I certainly for my twenties was like very like watching what I ate like a hawk. Cause the ultimate nightmare is to go right back there. I went back there. You did. Yeah. Post-grad, first year post-grad. I started making my own money. Were you in graduate school? No. So I, it was after I graduated USC and it was a year after.
26:23Yeah. That's when I started doing like this-ish full-time. And I started making my own money so I could start. I started post-painting a lot. Have you ever had Mr. Chows? Yes, I love Mr. Chows. I had Mr. Chows four times a week for six months. I fucking love it so much. I put on 25 pounds. What is it at Mr. Chows that would... The lobster vermicelli noodles. Never had it. Oh my God, I want them right now. My mouth is like actually salivating thinking about them. You've never had the lobster vermicelli noodles? No. It's Chinese angel hair. with lobster yeah so it's chinese food okay i'll order it next time i have mr chef have you had the green prawns of course i've had the green the green prawns are the i just had it two weeks ago when i'm in new in new york i always order mr because you know you know it's low-key better in new york yeah i love i love it that it's in tribeca right on that corner and you can order a takeout.

29:08And it made me, like, really want to plan another friend trip. and friend trips are impossible to plan because everybody has different standards of what they want in their stay. It'll show you hotel rooms, it'll show you rentals, but right now we are trying to plan New Year's, so I've been using booking.com to try to find a place for all of us to be at because at the end of the day, if you have a roof over your head, the trip will just plan itself essentially.

No. In my defense, I thought Jesus was a nickname for Moses.

30:16That's weird because a nickname usually doesn't take as long to say, but they're the exact same number of syllables, yeah. Uh-huh, yeah. Did you go to college? I went to theater school. What school did you go to? Post high school. The American Academy of Dramatic Arts. So you went to a proper theater school? A proper theater school, yes. Like it was like, it was like going to like Juilliard or like not even. Maybe less prestigious than, than Juilliard, but same idea. It's like an acting academy where you're like taking dance and voice and speech and singing and acting. And you do that for, the academy was two years.
30:58And I got straight A's for the first time and I loved it so much. you know you know when you go somewhere and you're like oh my god all these people are just as into this as i am uh-huh like i can talk about you know movies or actors or whatever with all these people that's how i feel with my best friends there's no other people that like to talk shit more than my best friends yeah it's the best i can't picture you gossiping you can't picture me gossiping I'm not a big gossip yeah you're not you don't see Matt no not that I don't enjoy it but I feel guilty if you know there's too much gossip happening but I could see you at like a dinner party someone saying something and then you going well that's what I could see you doing sure like well and like laughing to yourself and then someone going Adam what yeah and you going no I no no I can't I can't and then you going And it's just funny that that's the type of gossip.
32:01Sure. That's how I'd get you. Sure. Sure. Yeah. Yeah. I can do that. I just feel like if it gets, I just feel so badly if I start feeling gross if there's too much, if I'm engaging too much in gossip. Not to say it's not fun. No, I'm filthy. When's your birthday? April 3rd. Are you an Aries? Uh-huh. Wow. When's yours? October 27th. Oh, you're a Libra? Scorpio. It's what I meant. Uh-huh. What's Naomi? August 10th. Leo. Leo. So she brings up. No, August 10th is Leo. Yeah, yeah, it is. Because my son is October 7th. My daughter is October 17th. So they're both Libra. Oh, but she's right on the cusp of Scorpio.
32:54That's right. That's right. Oh, wow. October babies. Yep. How'd you and your wife meet? We met at a bar in Hollywood called The Cat and the Fiddle. It's not there anymore, but it was this awesome bar we met in 1998. I know. I know. Wait, oh my God. So you guys have been together like forever? 28 years. You did the math on that. Really fat. Oh, you're 20. You were born in 1998. I wasn't even born yet. Can I answer this, sir? Yeah. Hey, honey. Yeah, someone's going to come get you. She is so excited. I love how, I feel like you're a really good person. You've been with your wife. You sound shocked.
33:47Well, no, it's not that I'm shocked. It's just like, you're like, I feel gross if I talk shit. Yeah, you've been with, you really haven't let Hollywood jade. like you've not really jaded by it at all like well i am you it couldn't be me it could not be me well um so you've been with you met at the cat and the fiddle the cat and the fiddle which was like this bar where there's a whole outdoor area um and a big fountain so you just smoke everyone just went went there because you could smoke and um and yeah i met her there and i was doing a play so I was like I want to meet her and my friend was like oh wait I know her friend they were both Brits so we went over to them they introduced me to her she's like nice to meet you I'm leaving and she left but then they came to our play that we were doing that's what happened they came to our play we were doing like the next week and then at the party after the play we talked because it was closing night anyway Speaking of boring When were you born?
34:551999 I was locked in with you You were born a year after I met my wife Uh huh What was it like working with goats? It was Interesting for like a little while And then it was just like These animals are here It was a lot of goats Like a lot of goats They're like eating people's shoelaces and stuff and so it's like oh this is cool and then after a little while it's like all right we gotta just finish this finish the goats yeah well not like you know finish their storyline yeah not like what was their story heads off what was their storyline i never understood the goats they're very sweet animals actually no i understand goats in severance they're they have white fur usually you're not alone a lot of people are still asking about the goats and we're all like we kind of thought we explained it I didn't catch it I don't want to explain it because it'll I don't want it to be sort of dissected okay I understand what you're saying sometimes if I say something about the show everyone's like this is what this is my daughter's in the other room hey girl Hey, how was school?
36:20Frankie tried to get out of going to school today. I hated school. Yeah. Do you ever miss driving her to school? Did you ever drive her to school? Yeah, I did. I used to drive her to the bus stop. And then also school, when she went to school over there. When they're in elementary school, it's very sweet to bring them to school. What music do you remember playing them? In the car. whatever she was wanting to listen to at the time, which was, like, you know, what? Taylor Swift? Is that usually what it was, Frankie? But you are, like, to me, Taylor Swift, I'm, like, a big Taylor Swift fan. That is you with you, too.
37:01No? Yeah, but I'm also a big Taylor Swift fan. I love Taylor Swift. What's your favorite Taylor Swift song? You know what song of hers that I really love? Well, 1989 is a big album for Frankie and I. Oh. Because that was, like, huge. And we were super into it together and had, like, dances for some of those songs that we came up with together. But then I loved the Pandemic Records. Yeah, those were great. Evermore and— Evermore's my favorite. Yeah, I mean, holy shit. Evermore's my favorite. Marjorie's my favorite song on that. Marjorie and Tis the Damn Season. I love Invisible String. Yeah, I mean, talk about a classic.
37:52Well, you know the Long Pond? The Long Pond Sessions? Those are my favorites. Oh, really? You love the little Disney Plus special? I love the Disney Plus special, but I also love that version of all of those songs. Oh, yeah, she does Exile with Bon Iver. Yeah, over Zoom. Yeah. But also, she's just playing all of, she and Aaron Dresner, and he's there for that one song. But it's just the two of them playing the entire album. Yeah. There's no production, nothing. They're just playing it live. And, you know, that's all available just in it. I love that. I love the kind of fully baked version of the album as well.
38:35But I love those raw kind of live versions of those songs, too. I love when a live version is released on Spotify. Bon Iver just released a whole record of live tracks. Oh, really? Yeah. He did? It's amazing. Amazing. Of mostly which album? I think it was a lot of 22 to a Million. I forget if that's the album called. That last album? No, Sable. I wish. That last album was real good. that last album changed my life yeah that that little tune change in short story yes where the whole album switch and lifts upwards it's unbelievable but he's not touring it uh oh really yeah he's like i don't need to you know what speaking of live like raw versions is lady gaga did um howard stern like 15 years ago or something or whenever um what album was uh edge of glory on born this way born this way when born this way came out which was like a while ago she went on howard stern and played edge of glory just her and a piano she's so talented have you heard that version it like will make you cry just listening to her sing because that song is about believe her grandfather it is about her grandfather that song is i mean The song is terrific, but when it's down to its raw elements like that, it's so powerful.
40:11Whenever she goes and plays just her, I think it's incredible. Anyway. Yeah, I love a stripped-back acoustic version of a song. There used to be MTV Unplugged. They kind of have versions of that today. They have this new show called Colors, but I don't know if that equates to it. There's Tiny Desk. Tiny Desk. Sort of like that. Tiny Desk is great. BBC Live Lounge is my favorite because the artists will cover other songs. So like, I don't know if you know who Audrey Hobart is, but Malcolm Todd, her younger brother, who's also a singer, just covered one of her songs. Taylor Swift. Oh my God, did she do, she did September, right?
40:57Did she not do September? I like that song. Yes, she did. 21st night. Yeah, that was at the live lounge. I would put money on it, actually. I thought the new album was awesome. And I love Lover, too. The Archer is my favorite song of all time. Yeah.
41:15And Reputation, too. Wait. You're a Swifty. Well, I know. Yeah, yeah. I mean. No, you just bar for barred her albums like you're a Swifty. They're great records, man Did you see my shrine? Oh, you haven't seen my shrine No I have a shrine in the house Have you discovered Waxahachie? Are you into her? What? Are you about to say Gesundheit? Yeah, Waxahachie Yeah, Waxahachie You have to listen to Waxahachie She's the best You know who I think is Oh, well, do you listen to country at all? Yeah Casey? Are you a Casey? Musgraves? Yeah I don't know I don't know her I mean, I think she's great But I don't know her.
41:56Adam. I don't know her that well. You're not ready. No, you're actually not ready. I'm not ready. Because her album, Golden Hour from 2018. Oh, okay. That's the like big breakout. That's the big breakout. No, the big breakout was Same Trailer, Different Park. And that really broke. But wait, she just put out a record. Yes. How is that one? Really good. It's called Middle of Nowhere. People describe it as like brat for country. See, if you like Kacey Musgraves, you're going to love Waxahachie. Okay, I'll listen to Waxahachie. Start with her new record. Okay. Called Tiger's Blood. Okay. And just go backwards from there.
42:39Is it like, what's the genre? Folky, bedroom pop, country? Country rock slash... I don't know. She kind of encompasses a lot. She does. But Tiger's Blood has a lot of really good... It's like a real guitar record, but not shredding solos. It's just really lived-in guitar rock. Some of it, and then some of it is just... It's just really, really... It feels like an album that's been there for 100 years. and all the hooks and melodies all feel like something that's always been playing, but it's all brand new. It's really, really, I think, one of the great records of the last while. Oh, wow. I mean, it came out like a year, two years ago.
43:37Waxahachie. And I'm still like... Going back to it. Yeah, yeah, it's great. Yeah, wait, I'm so excited to listen to it. Yeah, tell me what you think if you listen to it. I will, but you have to listen to Golden Hour. Okay. The 2018 album. It is brilliant. And why? She wrote the entire album about her ex-husband. And it is like the entire album is like front to back, like a love letter. It feels like a love letter to him. And just like she is very into attachment styles. and she used to be, I think she would tell you she was in a void and attachment. In a what attachment? Okay, so the album starts with a song called Slow Burn and it's kind of like she's rapping but it's country.
44:26Okay. Slow Burn is amazing. Space Cowboy is the best. Okay. Rainbow is beautiful. Okay. Butterflies. You know, it's hard because when I was trying to describe the Wax Hatchy album to you, it's hard to talk about music and why something is great. I always end up feeling lame when I'm trying to talk, like describe something to someone. Yeah, I just feel like, I'm like, how do I describe how good this is? Yeah, I know. Because then you want to sing it. You're like, I'm not about to sing it. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Can you sing? Do you know how to sing? No, do you? No. She has some slammer lines, though.
45:00Okay, cool. Yeah. Have you been listening to Ella Langley? Mm-mm. Choose in Texas? Mm-mm. Banger. Okay. You guys listen to Choose in Texas? What? Oh, you like? I told you I'm a candy guy. I heard. So you're going to like a candy convention? Sweets and snacks. When you're there, it's going to be like a whole event, right? It's going to be just like we're going to be, we have sweatshirts made that say. Is that what all those sweatshirts are out there? No, but those are for you. All of them? Uh-huh. Thanks. You could take all of them. What if I did? I would say Adam Scott took all my hoodies. Do you want to do the tell me what's wrongs?
45:38Oh, great. And I feel like you give good advice. We'll see. we will i mean i am a dad it's part of my job what's do you love giving advice as a father i mean it depends it depends uh what the issue is i guess what's the most mad you've ever been at your kids i remember when frankie was like 11 she was like 11 and we discovered that she had more than one secret uh social media she wasn't allowed to have social media and she had like an entire network of social media yeah girl she had it going yeah and it wasn't instagram yet it was facebook musically oh man i feel old i never even had a musically really it was never my thing yeah you know what musically is i think i remember what it was yeah yes and then everyone's like lip syncing to things there's a very famous now video of baby Ariel and she was a very famous musically star and she had she did musically dance to fire when the strobe hits you yeah and she was on the news and she would go you go okay So that's what she was doing.
47:03Yeah, that's the sort of thing. Do you remember baby Ariel? Of course. Your daughter is fucking funny. Were you like 11 when that happened, Frankie? Okay, great. Oh, yeah. Well, you know, the reason people call me Jake Shane is because when I first made my Facebook when I was in seventh grade, my mom wouldn't let me use my last name, which is Roshko. Roshko? Jake Roshko. Yeah. Were you about to ask if I'm Jewish? Because the answer is yes. very much so and my middle name is shane after in my dad would tell me he was after some like alcoholic baseball player i don't really know and so my mom made me use jake shane and it just kind of stuck i jake shane i've always the the name is very sticky because it sounds like the name of either a professional baseball player or like an ex football player who's now an action movie star like um vince vaughn yeah was vince vaughn a football player i know um i just made up no no but it's it's like two syllables total well it's two first names yes like you know i guess my name's sort of two first names but jake shane feels uh more rugged than my name Adam Scott?
48:26Jake Shane. Jake Shane. Ooh. It's Jake Shane. I like that. He's going to kick your fucking ass. He's unstoppable, that Jake Shane. Yeah. Have you heard about Jake Shane? Dude, Jake Shane is like, you need to watch out, man. I heard he runs a tight ship over there. He runs a tight ship, and he's got so much cocaine. that's weird that you heard that about him you heard that about him i see i heard that about him maybe it's not true but yeah you know i actually i heard that too weirdly but i don't think it's true i don't think it's true anyway he will kick your ass yeah no jake shane's awesome and he has like this podcast yeah have you ever been on it and he makes candy and well he doesn't make candy he makes candy in his like guest house would you ever think of going on his podcast jake shane's uh yeah maybe you know i used to make candy i worked at a candy shop at an amusement park and i made um saltwater taffy wow that sounds fun honestly i heard you also worked at johnny rockets yeah for one day and then you found out they made you sing yeah and i left that's okay yeah or no i didn't leave because i'm not rude but i just didn't come back the next day which is rude so you left.
49:53I left, yeah. But you know, you rewrote that narrative beautifully just now. Thank you. Thank you, Amazon Prime, for sponsoring today's episode. If you are 18 to 24 years old, I am insanely jealous of you, not because of your youth, but because you are eligible for Prime for Young Adults. I've never been so sad to be 26, not just because I'm closer to 30, but because Prime for Young Adults is basically your own Prime membership, not your parents, yours. And Prime for young adults is half the price of regular Prime, which is$7.49 a month. And you also get 5 % cash back on eligible purchases. So if you're just restocking your usual hair stuff or you're treating yourself to something fun, you get 5 % cash back.
50:30No codes, no clipping coupons. It just shows up in your account ready to use for your next purchase. It's like finally having your own place, but for Prime. I'm so jealous that this exists now because when I was in college, when I was like 18, I was using my parents' Prime account for everything and they were monitoring every purchase. It felt like I was constantly being watched. So I'm so jealous that Prime for Young Adults exists now because I wish I had that, my own autonomy back then. But you guys don't need to use your parents' account anymore. You deserve to buy yourself any necessities and a little treat here and there without anyone else's judgment.
51:00Prime for Young Adults, 5 % cash back, 100 % yours. Prime for Young Adults is only available for people 18 to 24 years old. Terms apply. Thank you, Prime, for sponsoring tonight's episode. So what is this? It's, we're helping, all right. We're helping the world. Okay. Dang. I'm a type A girl in a world of type Bs. All my friends are constantly running late, very unreliable and disorganized to the point it starts affecting my life and my busy schedule. I want them to change so badly, but I know that that's impossible to ask of someone. I love them too, but it's very upsetting and they do not care at all.
51:34I'm really sorry, but you may have to read that again. I just spaced out. You want to read it? Yeah. By the way, that happens to every single guest. Frankie, you know. Okay. I can't even respond. Frankie's shoes. Oh, yeah, yeah. Oh, my God. Oh, my God, not your chic-ass glasses. Okay, this is more of just a brag about being organized. I kind of see. I agree. That's all that is. It's like, well, your friends aren't bad. Like, my best friend Cassidy is type B, and I'm type A. Yeah. It's not my problem that she loses her passport. I'm better than all my friends and I'm not sure how to tell them. Yeah.
52:18Like a lot of my friends are type B. A lot of my friends. Sure. And it doesn't affect me. I'll just scream. Yeah. You're fine. Like if I'm, or you just say like, I'm leaving. Like if you're late to somewhere, like I'm leaving, you can stay. Yeah. You're fine. They're fine. It doesn't matter. That's part of like. You have great hair. Oh, thanks. That's part of getting a little older as you realize that none of that stuff really matters that much. So funny you bring that up because my frontal lobe just developed. Oh, how's it feel? Fucking awesome. Yeah, it looks good. It looks like it's all together.
52:53Yeah, it's my third eye. Oh, good. I feel it. I was freaking out today about this. I was always a collector as a kid. I always collected Pokemon cards or whatever. So I was obsessing over this thing that I wanted to buy today. And then I was like, wait, oh my God, I'm obsessing over it because I have OCD. And I like connected the dots, but I knew I always had OCD, but I never like caught it in live action. And I caught it. I was like, gotcha. Oh, good for you. Thank you. Wait, how old are you when the frontal lobe finally like takes shape? I think 30. Are you 30?
53:34It's not. What? Adam. Are you younger than that? You just said my frontal lobe developed. You did lead him there. What happened? I'm 26. Oh, okay. Well, at your age, whether it be 26 to like 32, there's no insulting any, like thinking you're anywhere from 25 to 32 is all a compliment. all of it because it's all the same age essentially you feel that way well i feel that way now because i'm 53 it is crazy i you look really young thanks good for you i hope i i dress like you thank you you're welcome me and my boyfriend have been together since high school so we took a break because we thought it'd be healthy now that we're in our mid-20s we recently got back to okay so the boy so they were together in high school and then they took a break we recently got back together and he told me about all the people he hooked up with within that four months or so i guess though these were the rules but i didn't even like make out with anyone i'm having a really hard time getting over this oh you can't move on well yeah she's it's over yeah well you think it's over it's over because she'll never get over yeah well it's not his fault if they were She knows that.
55:02If they were, you know, she knows that. Yeah, she says. But it's never going to. She's a little bitter about it. She's a little bitter about it. Unless they take another four months and she goes and does her thing, she'll never get over it. Yeah, but then at that point it's like forced, you know? Yeah. It's like I'm only doing this because the guy, my ex-boyfriend did it. Yeah. I think you were just, you've grown apart. Have you ever seen the movie Someone Great? Nope. You should watch that. Have you ever seen the movie How to Be Single? the Dakota Johnson no I haven't seen that neither have I but you should watch that okay okay yeah I'll get right on that what's your favorite movie of all time Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom have you ever seen that have you ever seen sex lies in videotape you should watch that what's out about it's about four people um trying to figure out their lives i'm trying to think of how to say that what this is about you should watch that movie it's from 1989 it's i know it's that's like reaching back i know it's it's like scary how how old that chills came over me Oh my God.
56:21I have a hard time with old movies. But it's not, it's not, it's not going to feel old. I just watched it like a year ago and it felt like it could have been made yesterday. Okay. 1989, it's not like watching a movie from the thirties where everyone's like, yeah, yeah. I mean, I would never watch a movie from the thirties. Okay. So watch a movie from the late eighties. Like you've seen Goodfellas, right? Best movie ever. That was shot in 1989. You're lying. No. It came out in 1990. I just watched Casino for the first time, too. That was really good. It took me four times. It's really a harsher movie than Goodfellas.
57:04But you know what? You know what I love? The ending where he goes, and that's about it. Yeah. I know. Like, okay. Did you see The Irishman? I tried. Dude, The Irishman is - I've heard it's amazing. I think it's - His best movie. De Niro? Scorsese. But De Niro's in it. Yes. It might be. Thank you, Esher. I think it's, I've seen it so many times. I think it might be my favorite of those two. Okay, I'll watch The Irishman. Goodfellas, I watch when I had COVID. It's so good. Say that again. I watched Goodfellas when I had COVID. And I was like, oh my God, I'm obsessed with this. Have you seen Cape Fear?
57:43No. Dude, you have to watch. Is this another Mafia movie? I love the Mafia. Oh. No, but it's those two together. Do you watch Real Housewives? I got, you know what I got really into that I feel like I'm the only one is the new New York. Oh. I thought you were about to hit me with Rhode Island. And I was about to like go up and do that. I haven't been there yet. You liked the new New York? No one likes it, right? It's horrendous. But are they done now? Yes, because it's so bad. Because they were complete strangers and it was obvious. And they literally, do you not remember, they pulled a prank on the audience.
58:21By doing what? They pulled a prank, they made up a fake storyline, and then broke the fourth wall. Do you remember this? It was so big in the Bravo world. And everyone was so angry about it. I just remember all of them accusing What's-Her-Name of doing something. Oh, that was horrible. Horrible. That was horrible. No one likes it. I even was on Andy Cohen's show and I was like, hey, the new New York, I'm really enjoying the season. And he was like, yeah. So even he couldn't like get behind it. Rhode Island, get into it. That's the new one, right? Oh, it is exceptional television. All right. Do you watch Survivor?
59:04So I started this season and then once Mike White got voted off, I gave up. That was very like soon. So after like three or four episodes, I was out. But I was never a Survivor guy. I was like an American Idol guy. I was a Bad Girls Club guy. I was an America's Next Top Model guy. Okay. Like, I liked the girly. I'm going to the finale on Wednesday. Oh, are you a big Survivor guy? I'm a, yes, I love Survivor. Have you ever met Jeff Probst? I know Jeff Probst, yes. Are you guys buddies? Yes. He's a rad person. That sounds fun.
59:40an old friend is visiting from out of town and is crashing on my couch we had a fun weekend but apparently he had apparently a ferret we had a fun weekend but apparently he has no return flight i work on weekdays and i just don't want to host while stressed etc i also don't want to kick him out so how do i really hint at the fact he's overstaying his welcome have to say you must leave yeah you can't hint hinting only causes resentment between both of you don't you think like yeah because for you because you have to hint and that's exhausting and for him because he's going to be like is she hinting to make me leave yeah what an asshole just tell me straight up yeah be for real but also at the same time this is all very like 20s coded i think like at a particular point you just have to be like Like if you're going to come stay with a friend, you should not stay for more than two nights unless you are very upfront.
1:00:38Like I need to stay with you for two weeks or whatever. Like you don't just come and start staying with someone. I've been housing my friends for a week now. How's that going? Well, the house is a bit of a mess, but you know, it's been nice because it feels like college again. Yeah. I come home, they're there. It depends who it is and what your relationship is. Yeah, but we didn't. Sounds like this is fine. I realize that guy friendships aren't really like that. I was never great with when I had roommates, and it was never my favorite. As soon as I could, I lived by myself. Okay. You know? I can't live alone.
1:01:16I lived alone the first two years of college. Not para me. Freshman year of college, you lived by yourself. In a single dorm. A single dorm. And it was lonely, disgusting. Yeah. I washed my sheets twice. Yeah. Over the entire year. Yeah. Twice. I didn't know how to do it. And then I couldn't, I'm so short, I couldn't put it back on. So I was like, I can't do this bullshit. Washing sheets until you're like in your early 30s, it's just impossible. Like, how do you do this? I don't. Yeah. I don't. I do now if there are sheets on the bed longer than like, you know. five days or something. It grosses me out.
1:01:58But then I started living with a friend my junior and senior year, and then I always lived with people ever since then, and now I live here with friends. Yeah. That's great. Yeah. To each their own. So you should tell your friend to leave, and if you need help, you should watch Real Housewives because they are very confrontational. Yes. Did you ever watch Jersey Shore? No, I never. I mean, it was a huge thing. Didn't you parody it? Jersey Shore? Am I, like, making shit up? No, no, I was on the Bachelor parody. Yes! Yes, you were! Ken Marino and... Yes! ...Heroke Oyama. Wow, the memory unlocked for me.
1:02:36Who else kind of wrote that and did that? I love Jersey Shore. What was it called? The Bachelor... I know what you're talking about. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Do you know what a situationship is? I believe so. So it's just like you're just hooking up. It's not really a relationship. Okay, period. My two situationships have found out about each other recently, obsessed. And now they're both asking.
1:03:07Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait. It gets a little dirty. You don't care? Why? Because Frankie. I don't care. She doesn't care. She doesn't care. Okay. Here we go, Adam. All right. My two situationships have found out about each other recently, and now they're both asking me for a three-way, my dream date.
1:03:30I've had some suspicions in the past that they both might have previously hooked up with other guys, but now I have a theory that they just want to hook up with each other. Should I do it for the plot, or am I inviting trouble? Obviously do it for the plot. Everything I do is for a story. If I was seeing two different men, and they were like, let's all hang out, Hello? Date and time. I cancel work. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Do it. That sounds amazing. And then if it works out poorly, just be so depressed for a week. Yeah. And, like, be like, I'm depressed for the week. But then you have the experience.
1:04:05Mm-hmm. Unfortunately. So I prescribe doing it. Yeah. Why not? Why not? Why not? My roommates keep the temperature at 76 degrees. Oh, my God. Oh, my God. I literally, my entire body just driveled. and it is so hot every night. If I try to make it colder, they get mad. I open my windows and don't sleep under my cup. Why the fuck would you do that? Oh my God, that sounds like hell. But nothing helps. It is so fucking hot. I live with four girls, and they all three agree on it, so I'm outnumbered. Ugh, 76 degrees. What do you sleep at? Cold sleeper? If I had my way, I would be at max 68 degrees. I knew we'd get along.
1:04:48I love it freezing cold. Me too. 62. 62? Yep. With a fan by my side. I would love it so much. 62 fan by my side and on an eight sleep on a negative 10. It depends. Like if it's summertime, 68 doesn't feel cool enough. I like. 16 is never cool enough. In New York in the winter, I open my windows. Oh, I love it. I love. I hate New York in the winter when it's like too hot inside everywhere because radiators are going. Disgusting. I like having some breeze in there. I love it freezing. I don't know why. Why are we like that? I don't know. What do you think? Maybe we're anxious. Are you anxious? Yeah.
1:05:26Everyone else in my house likes a little warmer. I can't. I can't do it. When I walk into a house, I'm going to my friend's house after this. It's so hot. I already know I'm going to be so hot. I'm stressed. Especially if it's stuffy and there's no air. That's even worse. And you're like choking on your own breath. It's disgusting. Yeah. That's why I can barely do a sauna. but lately I've been obsessed with sauna because I was told it helps you lose water weight which I didn't know existed. Well of course it does. I did not know that. I thought you just peed it out. Do you have a sauna here? I do.
1:05:57Do you use it all the time? Recently have been. Yeah. Is it one of those circle ones? What? Those ones that are like a circle. No but I want one now. Yeah. I think you're talking about the same thing. Oh okay. Mine is a rectangle so. Well, it's like a little pod. But it's not a circle. Is it not? It's a rectangle. I met this cute guy at the gym. Those are different shapes. I met this cute guy at the gym and we ended up hitting it off. We've been on two dates so far and each one has been amazing. I was showing my friend his Insta and she told me she actually talked to him on Hinge and he ghosted her.
1:06:36She feels weird about me seeing him, which is understandable, but I finally have a good thing going here. Am I a bad friend for seeing him behind her back? Yes, you need to tell her, but she's a bad friend for ruining that for you. I got lost during that one. You got this. What do you think? Again, who cares? Like, just do whatever you want. Right? I see. I like that. And that's it. Those were pretty good. I like all the octopi in here. I feel like we really got close throughout this entire experience. Me too. And by the way, I know you're a bad liar, so I know you mean it. I do. How do you know I'm a bad liar?
1:07:18I can tell. Oh, all right. I feel like you don't like to gossip, so you don't like to lie. I don't love it, no. You really don't like to gossip? Ever. You don't want to sit down once and just rip it? Sure. But you know, I do always end up feeling a little skeezy afterwards Frankie, do you like to gossip? Yeah! I die for her She's awesome She's the best Well, Adam, what did we learn today? I mean, I learned a lot Me too A lot I learned that there are good people left in the world And I'm sitting with one of them I think I learned that this is my new favorite podcast. No, you didn't. I think I did.
1:08:09Wait, you really had that much fun? This was great. I could tell. At one point, I was like, wait, he's having fun. Oh, totally. I was like, wait, he's having fun. Totally. Well, you know, I have a meeting with your lovely wife coming up soon. Oh, yeah, you do. Yeah. Are you coming to our office? I hope so. I think so. Great. Yeah. Awesome. So we get to hang out again. Yeah. Love it. This was like the pre-meeting meeting. Love it. Bye, pussies. Thank you.
