In short

A secretive German hacker (“Martha Root”) and journalists expose White Date, a neo-Nazi dating site described as “Tinder for white supremacists,” and show how Martha hacked it and used AI bots to disrupt users.

Guests (backgrounds)

Martha Root (real identity hidden; investigates neo-Nazi/racist networks; spoke at 39C3 Chaos Communication Congress in Hamburg; voiced via AI). Eva Hoffmann (German investigative freelance journalist focused on power abuse and right-wing extremism). Christian Fuchs (Die Zeit journalist, right-wing extremism expert; interviewed/credited in the investigation).

Key claims

White Date had ~6,600 users; most from US/Canada, average age 38; heavy male skew. Profiles promoted “white”/national socialist ideology and “Europids.” Martha deleted site data (including backups, social media profiles, email addresses) and later published a rough location “potato map.” Journalists linked the founder to Christiane H. and right-wing networks.

Notable examples

AI bot “Ellie” chatting with users; “white verification” via Telegram plus deepfake; a user referencing “Liv Hyde” (founder) and planning a visit; bots receiving messages about “invasions of Poland.”

0:00Martha Root:This is The Guardian.

0:09Eva Hoffman:Today, how one woman took down Tinder for Nazis, dressed as a feminist superhero.

0:24Eva Hoffman:It was the very end of December last year when the Chaos Computer Club held its annual conference in Hamburg.

0:30Martha Root:Welcome to the 39C3 Power Cycles.

0:39Eva Hoffman:So the Chaos Computer Club is one or the oldest hacking organization in Germany and they have a yearly convention called the Chaos Communication Congress This is Martha Root, not her real name, not her real voice It's a mixture of people just sitting there for three days playing with hardware or 3D printers or whatever and there are a lot of presentations and talks while hacking. Martha is a hacker and is incredibly secretive about her true identity. I am a researcher, investigator, and I prefer to keep my rear name for myself because the neo-Nazis and the racist networks I'm investigating, they are like some people who are quite dangerous.

1:28Eva Hoffman:Martha took to the stage to talk about her latest and most audacious hack In disguise, of course She was dressed as a pink Power Ranger

1:36Martha Root:Meet the Pink Ranger Kimberly is a bright and beautiful girl Who loves shopping malls and gymnastics

1:44Eva Hoffman:I was kind of looking for Not too dangerous looking way to hack my face and also to make it seem a little bit funny at least.

2:02Eva Hoffman:Martha had been invited to address the Congress alongside two journalists from the German newspaper Die Zeit. Together, they'd been investigating a neo-Nazi dating website called White Date, which Martha had hacked into.

2:15Martha Root:Vielen Dank. Ihr habt ja noch gar nichts gehört. Danke, dass so viele sich hier reingequetscht haben.

2:21Eva Hoffman:They discussed how White Date worked. It's basically Tinder for white supremacists. And they read out some of the profiles. I'll translate it for you. I'm a German who loves Germanic culture and traditions and lives by old values. I'm hoping for a wife to come on this path with me to build a family. I have very good genes.

2:49Eva Hoffman:Once the talk had ended, the two journalists left the stage. But Martha stayed on. She had something secret planned. A piece of hacking theatre. So there were some technical issues, so I was pretty stressed because I also could not see properly in this helmet.

3:10Eva Hoffman:After a few technical problems, she shared her screen. Some code popped up. So it was like first saying that it changed the internet address of the owner. And line by line, Martha began deleting the neo-Nazi dating site. And then that it logs in to the hosting company, that it deletes white-date.map, deletes all the backups, deletes all the social media profiles, and then also deletes all the email addresses. The crowd went wild, and Martha's place in hacking history was assured.

3:47Eva Hoffman:From The Guardian, I'm Helen Pidd. Today in Focus. How a secretive hacker exposed a global network of white supremacists looking for love.

4:01Eva Hoffman:Before we go any further, I should tell you that we've done something pretty unusual in this episode. Martha is voiced by an AI. Now, I did interview her via the secure messaging app Signal, but Martha then ran her side of the conversation through an AI voice generator. For reasons that are probably already clear, she takes her privacy very seriously. Let's get going. How did all of this start for you? How did you come across White Date and what made it stand out from the other dating sites? So I did not start to investigate dating sites for themselves because it's not like a topic I'm instruced in usually.

4:38Eva Hoffman:before the last elections in Germany I started scraping right-wing networks or right-wing websites and I stumbled upon it and like went on the website it kind of to get my interest like first of all because they were like really secretive like when you join them they directly one of so-called anti-white infiltrators and you you have to like answer a few questions and then they approve you or they don't approve you. What I did is I gained access to the complete database of the website, meaning I was able to see all the messages that users send back and forth between them. And once I was in, yeah, like I had like a few funny ideas for what could be done with it.

5:23Eva Hoffman:I mean, I guess there's all kinds of different dating apps, aren't there, for pretty much every different sector of society and interest. But is it basically the same that you have a username a picture and then what else do people have on their profiles so yeah and generally it's like a lot of people have like user pictures and self descriptions are usually like really really long because it's often men who like to speak about themselves and then for strips like the normal stuff that adult taking profile has for example like the age like seeking a woman the location if they have children if they if they want children what's the astrological sign but But then also like the political orientation that a lot of the users openly speak about that they're like national socialists, that they are openly racist.

6:12Eva Hoffman:They play around with imagery of the Third Reich and then that they speak about Europe pits rather than white people. Because like the term Caucasian, which is more often used in English, would include Jews or Turkish people. And they want to exclude themselves from that. But yeah, it was just really crazy what people wrote. I've never heard that term before, Europids. P-I-D-S, is that how you spell it? Euro-P-I-D-S. Exactly, yeah. So, for example, I right now have a profile open and seen pictures of a bearded guy. He writes about his ancestry in a self-description. He says he has blue eyes and black, brown, dark hair.

7:00Eva Hoffman:He loves history. And then they say about their political orientation that he's pro-white, fully red-pilled traditionalism, ethno-nationalism, ethno-tribalism, national socialism and fascism. So details on the profits get a little bit different than, for example, compared with Tinder. Oh my goodness. And so you managed to download a huge amount of data from the user base. What can you tell us about the makeup of people who were on there, who were using White Date? Where are they from and who are they? So the data that I have from a website, those were 6 ,600 users. All in all, the large majority came from the US and Canada, followed by Germany and the UK and other European countries.

7:48Eva Hoffman:The average age in this data is 38. And the gender ratio is also quite imbalanced. It's 88 % MEM and 12 % WLN in the data. that I scraped in October 25.

8:06Eva Hoffman:Okay, so you hacked into White Date and downloaded more than 6 ,000 user profiles as well as DMs that they were all sending each other. What did you do next? So I wrote AI bots, which then interacted with those users. The main idea in the beginning was basically to just waste those people's time. Like if they chat with a robot, They cannot do Nazi stuff. So they basically in the beginning just existed. And in the moment where users, mostly men, wrote them, they started answering.

8:37Martha Root:Guten Morgen. I don't really speak German, but I'm learning. Are you open to dating a man from America? Most of my ancestors are German. Good morning. Yes, I'm open to a relationship with an American man with German roots. I've only been living in Germany for a short time and I'm still learning German.

8:54Eva Hoffman:This is Ellie, one of Martha's AI creations. She's 34 years old and recently moved from the UK to Germany for work. She's looking for something slow and serious. And her username, brace yourself, is Lil Miss Ethnostate. We've used actors to play her and her suitors.

9:13Martha Root:Your profile is a bit sparse. Tell me more about yourself. I'm looking for wife material and want to build the best life with her. Hi there. Thanks for reaching out. It's great to connect with someone who appreciates traditional values like I do. Your analogy about men building strong structures and women filling them with life resonates deeply. Maybe we could meet up for coffee or something if we hit it off.

9:39Eva Hoffman:And are you typing in these questions or is the AI just inventing? Have you just set the AI off to do its thing? They were basically prompted that they should behave like traditional or really conservative women who want to save the white race. and that's why they are on the platform, that they should ask questions regarding the political orientation.

10:00Martha Root:I'd like to learn more about you and whether you truly share similar views to mine. That Nazi time was by far the best we had in Germany. The time was so much better and cleaner without all the disgusting races which now are living in Germany. Would be great to meet up for coffee and get to know each other. Best regards.

10:16Eva Hoffman:What was like part of the prompt that they should not proactively go into like pushing towards a political thing because it would have been like a real problem if my bots would have radicalized people or if my bots would have told people to do, I don't know, like some kind of activism on the streets or whatever or harass some foreign or some whatever. So in the beginning, I had to supervise them a bit, meaning I had to read out manually what they were doing. But in the end, they were running fully automatically. Do you have any big plans for this summer? Smiley face.

10:52Martha Root:Invade Poland, winky face.

10:55Eva Hoffman:Ha ha, that is indeed a big plan, laughing face. What other interests do you have besides planning invasions?

11:02Martha Root:I'm really looking forward to summer too.

11:04Eva Hoffman:It's a great time to get outside and enjoy nature. And did you ever think about meeting up with any of them in real life? One user wanted to have a date with Ellie. He wrote the weirdest stuff ever. So he's living in a city in southern Germany and that he is writing on little pieces of paper to his neighbours, which are not white, that they should go home, please. And to the neighbours who hang out with people who are not white, that they, please, should stop hanging out with people who are not white. Gosh, and this is him trying to seduce this woman saying, guess what I do in my free time. yeah like look look look what what kind of quick i am um in the end my bot i wanted to have a date but then there were like really really sad messages that my pop did not show up oh goodness so yeah and did no one figure out that they were talking to a bot actually so one one of the bots was banned and then what what are you going to do when i get banned i basically wrote the support and said, hey, I'm banned.

12:12Eva Hoffman:And they said like, yeah, we think you're a bot. Please verify yourself. And they have this thing on the website called white verification, which means that you have to make a review on Telegram and send it to a Telegram account and hold a paper with your email address in front of you. And I basically did that using a deep fake software, meaning I just exchanged my face with the face of Ellie. the deep fake worked and shortly after becoming white verified ellie received a message from an american guy he's a big anti-vaxxer and an anti-semite who writes on his profile that jews want us all to mix together until the world becomes a brown dumbed down mass of low iq half wits clueless that purebred high iq jews have come to dominate everything he's looking for a like-minded and creative white woman to bear multiple children.

13:05Eva Hoffman:Someone who still values tradition, family, and truth above all else. His big claim to fame is that he says he knows Liv Hyde, the woman who runs White Date.

13:15Martha Root:Greetings, miss. I'm trusting that you are a genuine white woman in profile because Liv Hyde, the founder and administrator of White Date, has already processed your white verification. If you reside in Lubeck, you're less than a two-hour drive from her and I'm going to visit with her and her daughter next week. So I'm writing to you with interest in whether you would like to meet with me and or us in person anytime during May 8th through May 11th. Some curiosities I already have would be how you became racially conscious and how you discovered WipeDate. But we can chat later, respectfully.

13:46Eva Hoffman:It sounded a bit weird. I think he just wanted to brag with the fact that he knows the founder of this platform. From that moment, I stopped using a bot and basically started writing. Hamburg this weekend? That could work. I'd prefer to meet just the three of us first, too.

14:05Martha Root:Are you flying in via Hamburg?

14:07Eva Hoffman:Martha realised this was a huge opportunity to find out who this mysterious live-hider was. They agreed that Ellie would travel to northern Germany to meet up.

14:16Martha Root:Let's see how it goes. Catch you at 11 sharp unless something crazy happens. In the meantime, I'll be investigating what it means to place X at the end of a message. LOL. well.

14:28Eva Hoffman:Now obviously Ellie isn't real so at the last minute Martha made excuses on behalf of Ellie the bot. The idea was that we basically say that there was a car crash on the way and Ellie has to take care of her friends so we let's meet another day. But in reality Martha teamed up with another activist and together they spied on this American guy and Liv Haider. We followed them First they did like a little Nazi road trip through Northern Germany. Like they went through a Viking village, looked at really, really boring things for the whole day. And in the end they stopped at a, yeah, like quiet, expensive house.

15:07Eva Hoffman:And when I started looking up who lived there, I found out that a person lived there who has a company. And that company owns the trademark for White Date.

15:22Eva Hoffman:Having figured out who was behind White Date, Martha realized it was time to start making her discoveries public. In the beginning, she was basically a non-person and it wasn't really clear if she's active in any networks. So I basically contacted journalists I know that are experienced with investigations in the far right. Those journalists digged a little bit deeper into the fighter.

15:46Martha Root:My name is Eva Hoffmann. I'm a German investigative freelance journalist, and I basically work on issues of power abuse and right-wing extremism in Germany.

15:59Eva Hoffman:Tell me, what was your reaction when Martha approached you with Elite Database for White Date?

16:04Martha Root:I was not surprised, actually, that a site like this exists, because I'm working on right-wing extremism in Germany, and I've seen many things. So I think what was surprising to me was how big and how international it actually is. So we quickly figured out that it's more than just a dating platform or just a place where people go to flirt, but rather to connect and to actually build like this white supremacist community. So once I got the leak from Marta, I contacted Christian Fuchs, who's a journalist working for the German media outlet Die Zeit. He's an expert in right-wing extremism in Germany.

16:51Eva Hoffman:How did you go about verifying the posts that you read on there as a result of this leak? And were you able to link them back to real people?

17:01Martha Root:Yes, so when we got the database, we compared it to other databases we had of right-wing parties, networks, groups, where people have their email addresses. So many people use the same email addresses in white dates so we could figure out who it is. And we actually found some Congress members on the local level in Germany. In the end, we decided not to call them out because it's still not against the law to be on a website like this.

17:33Eva Hoffman:And so you worked to look into the leaked databases and to try and figure out who is behind these sites. What did you find out about who this Liv Heide character was that Martha had identified?

17:49Martha Root:So we quickly discovered that Liv Heide, which sounds in German, it sounds like a very like core German name. There's not much more German than this name. But it wasn't her real name. So we found out through the German company register, her real name is not Liv Heide, but Christiane H. And we tried to track down her past a little bit to understand how she became this person or how she became the founder of this site.

18:20Eva Hoffman:And we should probably point out that the reason that you're not using her surname, you're just calling her Christiane H, is just that German privacy laws are more strict than in the UK. and it's sort of convention, isn't it, in the media that you wouldn't out somebody using their full name. Is that right?

18:34Martha Root:Yes, that's true.

18:35Eva Hoffman:And what did you find out about her?

18:37Martha Root:Yeah, so the thing is she doesn't look like the classic fascist that you might imagine. She could work anywhere with this look. She looks friendly. She has blonde hair, pearl earrings, average, I would say, like the average woman from next door. But when you look deeper into her profile, We found out that she's part, for example, of the Ludendorff Circle, which is a very right-wing association that is closely watched by the state secret service because it's kind of a very tight network that's referring to Ludendorff, which was the politician in 1923 who assisted Hitler in his first coup and trying to gain power over Germany.

19:26Martha Root:and so they have a very obvious historic link to national socialism and they refer to it through rituals, dancing circles. So they do all this like... Sounds a bit like pagans. Yeah, it sounds a bit culty.

19:42Eva Hoffman:Yeah, yeah, yeah.

19:43Martha Root:And they come all together in certain days of the year to celebrate like solstice and under this umbrella of ethno-spiritualism they are somehow recreating their network.

19:56Eva Hoffman:And what did you find out about how she got to this point?

19:59Martha Root:People said that she was a very talented child as a piano player. So she was what in German you would call wunderkind, so someone who's really good at something, extraordinary good. She aspired a career as a piano player and she wasn't very successful. And instead of playing the big stages, she played small venues at some embassies or like in the background at some soirees where people meet. And at one of these evenings, she met her ex-husband, a guy that we also talked to and who's Jewish, whose father actually survived the Shoah. And to us, it was very surprising when you read her text or you hear her talk right now, especially with all the anti-Semitism, that she was actually in a romance and also in a marriage with the son of a Jewish Holocaust survivor.

21:00Martha Root:He said that politics were not really a big topic in their relationship until 2015 when there were the terror attacks on the Bataclan. Oh, in Paris. In Paris, yes. And there were other terror attacks in Nice and other French cities at this time. and there were conspiracy theories online about an inside job and so on. And he suspected that she got into these conspiracy theories through online videos. And she started to also send these videos to her friends and loved ones. And he told us that he once got one of these videos and told her, please don't send this to me. But in the end, this might be a turning point where she got deeper and deeper into the rabbit hole.

21:56Eva Hoffman:Everyone has a podcast these days, and Liv Heide is no exception. What is anti-white?

22:05Martha Root:To find out what is anti-white, let us first define what is white. We are white. We are the white people, the Europids. Our forefathers survived the ice ages and came out on top. Thus our genes have been brutally selected and refined for tens of thousands of years. Christiane H. believes in a conspiracy theory that is very common among white supremacists, which is of like so-called white genocide. They believe that white people are a minority on the planet and therefore need to be preserved. And they are trying to be replaced by people from other countries and so on. The anti-whites want us to mingle and melt.

22:53Martha Root:But having mixed-race children in societies would kill our race and our culture, which is clearly anti-white behavior we must reject. And of course, this kind of theory that only white people should date white people is so deeply rooted, especially in Germany, in national socialism and the race theory that for good reasons we have overthrown. So historically, it's the same theory in new words, I would say.

23:25Eva Hoffman:And did you manage to find out when she set up White Date? Did she have a profile on the site?

23:30Martha Root:She probably set up White Date in 2016 and she does have a profile and it's a mix of thread wife, I would say, and full on white supremacist mixed with some yoga and gardening. It's a bit disturbing, I would say.

23:53Eva Hoffman:And it turned out that White Date wasn't the only website that Christiana H. was operating, was it? What were the others?

23:59Martha Root:Yeah, so Christiane H. also worked on White Deal, which was a platform for companies to hire white people only. It wasn't a big success. And then there was White Child, which is a website for people who are, for whatever reason, not able to have kids their own. So they can match with some people who also want to donate. Yeah, I don't know how it actually works in real life, but yeah, for adapting white kids. Greetings, everybody. This is Liv Heide from WhiteDate, WhiteDeal and WhiteChild.net. I am here today...

24:48Eva Hoffman:Liv Heide was very proud of her creation, telling a podcast why she set up WhiteDate. Looking back, I am still frustrated that the platform is not bigger than it is.

24:59Martha Root:I'm compared to these big dating platforms that are heavily funded with millions of dollars or euros trying to push a certain agenda, an anti-white agenda, trying to mix whites with non-white, suggesting always non-white matches. And the movement I see is a pro-white movement, as simple as that. And this is actually why White Date exists.

25:22Eva Hoffman:And was White Date successful in terms of actually matching these racists with each other?

25:28Martha Root:I think if you ask the website, it was successful. Of course, we cannot really prove that. On the website, when it was still online, there was little columns of people who were talking about their experiences and how happy they are to have found each other. I'm very thankful. The platform I have built has led so far to eight children I know of. I'm sure there are several more, maybe a dozen. And I've heard from many members that they are very grateful to find people they can

25:59Eva Hoffman:openly talk to and they can even meet up and be alive. And how did Christiana H. respond when you went to her with your reporting?

26:08Martha Root:Well, what we usually do when we do an investigation like this, of course, we confront the people who are responsible. So we try to confront her through the email on the website with all our questions and everything we have found out. And she refused to answer us via mail. she therefore wanted to send us a fax fax wow and we first had to figure out if we have a fax at the site turns out we do and then it was a bit of a ping pong where she said she didn't get our message she didn't get the fax we called someone to look at the actual machine and we know that nothing came from her so she refused to answer our questions that's why in the end we had to say okay she didn't reply

26:56Eva Hoffman:So she didn't respond to any of the allegations?

26:59Martha Root:No, she didn't.

27:05Eva Hoffman:Coming up, Martha takes her neo-Nazi baiting to the next level.

27:22Eva Hoffman:Once the white date expose was published in Inside, Martha launched a website where members of the public could look up the profiles of all of these love-lorn neo-Nazis and see roughly where they lived. I hate bragging about myself, but I think that was one of the more funny things I did. All the users on the map, their little potato icons, and each potato icon is standing for one user. So does this mean that you could look at a map of the world and there were thousands of potatoes dotted all over and those represented each of these white supremacists who were looking for a fellow white supremacist.

27:58Eva Hoffman:Yeah, so what's really important here, so those locations are not exact locations, meaning like if there's a potato, that does not mean that behind this potato is a real racist or a real nerd. It's like the rough area where they are. So what did you do with the rest of the data if you didn't publish it all? So the IP data from the users, they're all the private messages or the forum messages I shaped them with DDoS Secrets. So DDoS Secrets is a non-profit that specializes in publishing, archiving and analyzing leak and data sets for protecting sources. Yeah, we've heard about them on the show before.

28:36Eva Hoffman:DDoS is distributed denial of secrets and it's a bit like what WikiLeaks used to be, isn't it? Yeah, so what they do is when someone has an interesting data leak that might be interesting for the public, then there's the possibility that journalists and researchers can request to access this data test. So it's not completely available to the public. And we first heard about your piece of hacking theatre when we saw the clip of you online, when you deleted the servers, not just for White Date, but also for White Child and White Deal, Christiana H's other websites. Were you surprised by just how viral it went?

29:12Eva Hoffman:Yes, and I kind of expected a shitstorm afterwards. And 95 % of the feedback was really positive. And what I found the most positive, there was the people who spoke of themselves as non-white people, who on the one hand said how shocked they were about the statements that they heard from this woman, like in the, I published a video on YouTube about that, where you have her talking about like that. like people even though they speak perfect German they could never identify themselves as German or that that even a person who is like a Jew to one age cannot be trusted or whatever and people wrote me that they on the one hand were shocked about hearing like those kind of statements but on the other hand were like so happy to see someone actually doing something instead and I think it shows that if you put some time and effort into it there's something that that you can do against those websites and like those networks and this where I supported can be stopped in the end.

30:19Eva Hoffman:That was the hacker who calls herself Martha Root. My thanks to her and also to Eva Hoffman. We reached out several times to Christiana H for comments, but we got no reply. This episode was produced and sound designed by Eli Block and it was presented by me, Helen Pidd. The executive producer was Hummer Khalili. We'll be back later this afternoon with the latest.
