In short

Toddler poop refusal—pee on the potty but refusing to poop there; holding poop all day, asking for a diaper at bedtime, panic when potty is mentioned; reframing the issue as fear/discomfort rather than defiance or laziness; using gradual “baby steps” and playfulness to rebuild confidence; addressing constipation/soft stools.

Guest backgrounds

No guests. Host is Dr. Catherine (Toddlers Made Easy / No Fluff Podcast).

Key claims

20–25% of kids experience potty refusal (especially poop); diaper use can become a “security blanket”; refusal is usually fear (toilet/flush/splash or prior painful poop), not manipulation; pushing creates power struggles.

Notable examples

A 3.5-year-old who held poop up to a year; “Leo,” potty-trained for pee but later refused poop in the potty, panicked and held up to five days, then parents eventually gave pull-ups.

0:37Dr Cathryn:A family came in with their spirited three-and-a-half-year-old. He proudly used the potty for pee, but poop? Absolutely not. He'd hold it all day, ask for a diaper at bedtime, and panic if they even mentioned the potty. The parents had followed all the well-meaning advice they found online. give him a diaper, don't push, let him decide when he's ready. But it had been over a year and he still wouldn't go near the toilet to poop. They were exhausted. They tried rewards, consequences, peer pressure. They even cut a hole in the diaper so he could poop while wearing a diaper. But nothing worked. He just got more anxious.

1:18Dr Cathryn:Now, most parents think this is just a phase and sometimes it is. But when it drags on, kids can get stuck in fear, in holding, in patterns that get harder and harder to shift. So if you're stuck in this exact spot, your child pees on the potty but absolutely refuses to poop on it, you'll appreciate this episode. Welcome to Toddlers Made Easy. I'm Dr. Catherine, and this is the No Fluff Podcast that gets right to the point because you don't have 45 minutes of free time. So let's start here. If your child refuses to poop on the potty, it doesn't mean you did anything wrong. About 20 to 25 percent of kids go through some form of potty refusal, especially with poop.

2:04Dr Cathryn:It's common and it's not a sign of bad parenting or that you started too early or a child who wasn't ready when you began or that there's something wrong with your child. It's simply a hiccup, a frustrating one, yes, but one you can absolutely get through. So here's what often gets missed. Kids don't just wake up one day and say, okay, I'm ready to stop using diapers. They need help making that transition. Because for many kids, a diaper isn't just a habit, it's a security blanket. It's familiar, it's predictable, and it's safe. And pooping in the potty feels like a big, often unwanted leap. Here are some common reasons why this problem shows up.

2:51Dr Cathryn:Pooping in a potty feels different than in a diaper. Kids want that snug pressure of the diaper against them. They're scared of the toilet, or the flush, or the splash, and most commonly, they've had a painful poop before, and now they associate pain with pooping on the toilet or potty. Or it can simply be that they're overwhelmed by the change. And yes, developmental differences and temperaments can definitely play a role too. But the key takeaway here is that when a child insists on pooping in a diaper, it's a symptom. It's not the root of the issue. And that's where it gets hard for us. We want our kids potty trained way more than they do.

3:31Dr Cathryn:So when they resist, We push, and when they dig in, we try harder. And before long, we're both stuck in a power struggle where nobody's winning. But here's the thing. Refusal to poop on the potty is usually about fear. Might be fear of the toilet, fear of the flush, fear of discomfort. What it's not is defiance, it's not manipulation, and it's not laziness. It's real fear, just like the fear of heights. Now, if your child were afraid of swimming, you wouldn't just toss them in the deep end. You'd build trust. You'd take it step by step. And you'd start in the shallow end. Well, toilet fear deserves the same respect.

4:14Dr Cathryn:And when we shift from fighting the behavior to supporting the emotion underneath it, everything starts to change. I gave a potty training workshop recently, and it was about how to start potty training. And during the Q &As, one thing really stood out. Almost every family that was there was struggling with a poop refusal problem. They weren't starting training. They weren't having problems with peeing, just poop issues. And when I asked how long they'd been waiting for their child to be ready, the answers were six months, a year, even two years. So let's clear up a few of the most common myths.

4:52Dr Cathryn:You started too early. This problem has nothing to do with when you started. Your child is lazy. Nope, this is about fear, not effort. They're manipulating you. Well, no, kids don't hold their poop to be defiant. And this has nothing to do with constipation. Well, truthfully, it often starts with constipation and fear of discomfort kicks in. Or they're just being stubborn. What looks like stubbornness is usually fear in disguise. Okay, great. So what can you do? Well, let me tell you about Leo. I've known him since birth. He's a sweet little boy who's obsessed with the moon. Every night he wants to look outside the window, and he can tell you the difference between a crescent moon and a full one.

5:39Dr Cathryn:When Leo turned three, he potty trained like a superstar, using a three-day boot camp method. But a few weeks later, his mom brought him to my office because he was refusing to poop in the potty. He'd pee in the toilet all day long, at home, at daycare, but he'd beg for a pull-up for pooping. At first, his parents said no, but he'd panic. He'd have full-blown meltdowns, and he'd hold his poop, sometimes for up to five days. And eventually, they'd give in as they should. They didn't want to reinforce the habit, but they also didn't want him to suffer. So this is the impossible feeling place so many families land in.

6:18Dr Cathryn:You don't want to push, but you can't wait forever either. And here's the truth. You can help your child move forward. gently, gradually, and without turning it into a daily battle. It's not about forcing, it's about understanding the problem. How we think of a situation influences how we manage it. So let's say you think this is about defiance, well then you're going to be inclined to, you know, push a little harder. But when you realize it's about fear, your approach can change to supportive. So practically speaking, this means breaking down where you are now and where you want to be into small, manageable, easily digestible steps.

7:02Dr Cathryn:Because baby steps are so much easier on a child who's fearful and it helps them feel safe and successful. And here's something else. One of the best tools we have for helping kids move through fear is playfulness. For example, If your child's afraid of the flush, try putting a drop of food coloring in the tank and letting them guess what color the water will turn. Silly, yes, but incredibly effective. Playfulness is the solution to almost any kid-shaped problem. So if you take just one thing from this episode, let it be this. Think about where your child is now and where you want to be and break that path forward into tiny baby steps.

7:47Dr Cathryn:That's exactly why I'm working on a course called Help, My Child Will Only Poop in a Diaper. It's for parents of kids who are happily peeing on the potty, but absolutely refusing to poop anywhere but a diaper. It's for families who've been told just wait it out, but they know in their gut it's time to do something. In this course, I'm going to walk you through a practical, easy, step-by-step approach to understanding what's going on, rebuilding your child's confidence and shifting from the diapers to the potty without panic, without bribes and without power struggles. This problem seems crazy and confusing until you realize it's driven by fear or discomfort or anxiety.

8:32Dr Cathryn:You can absolutely help your child get unstuck and that's exactly what this course is going to help you with. You can find the link for the waitlist in the show notes. It'll be available very soon. I'm just putting the last final touches on it. Before we leave, I need to mention one other priority, and it's something you could start while you're waiting for the course. That's making your child's stools soft and easy to pass. Now, this is one of the biggest overlooked issues in potty training, is making a soft stool a priority. If you'd like a little deeper dig or ideas on how to do this, I'm going to ask you to take a little stroll down memory lane and listen to my episode on Happy Tushies, How to Manage Poop Problems During Potty Training from February 2023.

9:20Dr Cathryn:Listen, everyone, keep up the good work. You're doing a better job than you think. And thank you for listening to Toddlers Made Easy. I'll see you next week.
