In short
Friendsgiving recap; parenting manners and calming techniques; Thanksgiving dish rules; pregnancy back/neck pain and chiropractic controversy; misleading food labeling; kids’ emotional expression via Happy Meal boxes; charity gift-giving (Angel Tree) and a possible toy-drive Christmas party.
Guest backgrounds
No guests appear in the transcript; it’s hosted by two parents (the couple hosts).
Key claims
Canadian Thanksgiving grew via social media; kids’ politeness (handshakes, please/thank you, saying goodbye) is worth modeling; store-bought Thanksgiving dishes are acceptable if plated and taste good; chiropractors aren’t MDs and evidence is limited, with concerns about overstated claims and rare severe risks; McDonald’s Happy Meal “draw how you feel” is good for emotional expression but feels odd given nutrition concerns; “plant-based” gummies can still be heavily processed; Angel Tree can meaningfully reduce dread about not having gifts.
Notable examples
Friendsgiving at a friend’s ranch (30 people, creek, fall foliage); frying chicken on an open fire; smoked ribs and turkeys (one fried, one smoked then oven); labeling corded headphones to avoid mix-ups; Fred again.. “Tate” mentioned for calming; Angel Tree Barbie/shoes/clothes story; Gushers rebranded as “Sun-kissed pear fruit juice bursts” with pear puree as top ingredient.

There's no doubt about it. It just tastes better. Match Days deserve Pepsi. Spring just slid into your DMs. Grab that boho look for that rooftop dinner, those sandals that can keep up with you, and hang some string lights to give your patio a glow-up. Spring's calling. Ross, work your magic. I keep feeling just like nauseous. Oh, can you hand me that water? Of course.
0:39Tate:Thank you so much. My pleasure.
0:45Tate:Did you see the video of the girl at Chick-fil-A? And the guy was like, thank you so much. And she's like, you're welcome. I mean, I mean my pleasure. Then they come and kidnap her and put her in the back of the van like it's a joke. But saying if you don't say my pleasure, you're fired. uh no i've not seen that it's funny okay ready i've seen that yes all right welcome back to another episode of two parents in a podcast today it's it's thanksgiving eve week yes it is and you let's just rehash this one more time about how canada sees that america made thanksgiving really awesome and then piggybacked on it yeah well yeah it existed beforehand but i feel it it became more of a big thing post the social media.
1:30Tate:I'm really happy about that for Canada because Thanksgiving is an awesome holiday. Let me clarify that because I cut off. Growing up, it felt like Canadian Thanksgiving wasn't a big thing. And then I think when we started to see how big of a thing it was via social media, that's when it definitely became much larger. Would you say it was equivalent to our St. Patrick's Day? You've lost me on that Well St. Patrick's Day It's not an A holiday It's kind of a B holiday But St. Patrick's Day Here's what's funny St. Patrick's Day in Canada Massive Oh you guys big with the Irish? Big We would have massive St.
2:12Patty's Days
2:13Tate:But would your family celebrate Or you guys would go to the bars That's what I'm saying That's kind of what I'm saying Yeah but I'm from like St. Patrick's Day is huge in like Cleveland, Chicago, New York, more northeast, northeast, Midwest. That's where all the Irish Catholics are. Okay, so that's a family holiday for the Irish Catholics, yeah. I love an Irish accent. And do you know what I love most about Irish people? What? Do you have any Irish friends? No. Do you? All of my friends are Irish. Okay, So tell me if this lands true, how much they love Guinness, but Guinness from Ireland and how Guinness and Ireland tastes different than Guinness anywhere else.
2:58Tate:I believe that. Do you hear this? Yeah. Yeah. You get that. You get this. The only time I've ever had Guinness was in Ireland. Yeah. If you, if you ever want to trigger a Irish person, you tell them this. And then they get mad. You ask them, do you know? You're asking, have you ever had a Guinness fresh off the tap in Ireland? Blasphemy. It's the best. Why are you telling me about that? Yeah, I love an Irish accent. We were on a call the other day with a potential new partner, and the guy was Irish. I was like, I could listen to you talk all day, my friend. I told him that. What did he say? I feel like Irish people are very proud.
3:40I think he was very proud.
3:42Tate:Aw. Mm-hmm. That's really nice. Mm-hmm. I don't know much about Ireland. Ireland. There may or may not be golf trips in the works to Scotland and Ireland. Yeah, you are. So Harrison and the boys want to go to Scotland or Ireland to golf, and then the girls go to Paris is the plan. Yeah, it's a nice little dynamic. You've got to move the coffee. The ladies are friends. Off the thing, sorry. You've got to move it off the thing immediately. Yeah, this is our life. No, no, no. It has to go out of sight for a second. All right, not even a sip. We're not even going to do a sip. I don't know. I just have taken a turn for the worst over here this week.
4:16Tate:I had a great weekend. And then it was just like Sunday. I just plummeted because we had Friendsgiving. And it was the best Friendsgiving I've ever been to. But we spent the night out two nights at our friend's ranch. And like we were on our – like it was so much fun. It's the most fun I've had in a very long time. And I just went – like I gave it everything I had. And when I tell you I am paying the price for it, it is wild. Okay, I would like to discuss a couple things with you. Okay. What was your first American Thanksgiving experience? My first American Thanksgiving experience would have been at Alex Cost's house with his family during college.
4:52Tate:So he invited you home. He invited me home. For Thanksgiving. Yeah, I mean, my first five to ten Thanksgivings, I think, was spent with his family. They do an unbelievable, unbelievable Thanksgiving. Their Thanksgiving is straight out of the movies. Oh, that's so fun. Yeah. Where is home base? In New York. Okay. Yeah. That's great. It used to be in Pelham and now they live in a new town. Really cool. Right off the Hudson River. Oh, beautiful. Well, that's cheating. And it like looks. The Hudson River during Thanksgiving would be just like so fall. Yeah. Oh, beautiful. Okay. Yeah. So that's fun.
5:30Tate:All right. We're going to do more Thanksgiving chatter later because what we realized at Friendsgiving like was a couple things, but mainly I want to talk about like parenting styles that we were witnessing. Okay. Great parenting styles. There were some things I really admired, so we're going to get into that. But before that, I want to talk about how I checked your Instagram story this morning, only to find out that you went on a sushi date last night. Not date. Solo date. Sushi date at 9.30. I went to bed at 8. Bubz went to bed at 7. I didn't even hear you leave the house. You took the caddy.
6:02Tate:I told everyone last week we would talk about the caddy. We didn't do it. We're talking about it this week. So tell us about your sushi date, why you went by yourself, and then talk about the caddy. Okay. I've been craving sushi for two weeks. He has not stopped talking about it. Do you want to go get sushi with me? Do you want to go get sushi with me? And like, let me tell you what, it doesn't sound good. I was so happy when I saw that you went. And I do some of my most productive work at night when things are like, when the rest of the world work-wise quiets down. And I've gotten out of that flow a little bit.
6:39And so the amount of time I've spent in hotel lobbies or restaurant bars, just laptop, food and a beer, but it's really died down.
6:55Tate:Well, it's died down because we had bubs. When we first started dating, you and I would always laptop at a restaurant in New York City until 10 p.m. And it was the best, you guys. It was so fun. What I also like what the light bulb that went off to me last night, which was like obviously super simple, because I'm like, I'm sitting downstairs. You're asleep. She's asleep. Like I can leave the house. Yes. I was so happy when I saw that you did it because I've moved my bedtime up. I moved it to nine. Now I've moved it to eight. And like I'm sleeping pretty good. And I'm getting up with bubs because I feel really good in the morning and I've been missing my bubs.
7:31Tate:So I've been doing the morning shift. when I saw you left the house I was like this is what he should do yeah it was it was um it was it was very nice experience just had the music blasting um and the caddy let's talk about the caddy what's going on with the caddy yeah so the caddy has entered the life it's Harrison's whole personality um he dressed up one night I keep cutting you off but one night it was a Saturday night and he said I'm just gonna put on an outfit and go drive the caddy it's the best thing ever what's so weird is like i never liked cars like i was never a car person like to me cars were always super super transactional and then this caddy showed up and we share the caddy with our neighbor so it's a 50 50 split it's a it's a 50 50 year um and that makes it really fun because when because the gas gauge is broken and so every sunday harrison and the neighbor t they go get gas together and so the story with his neighbor t found it uh at a ranch and uh sent over a photo i fell in love with it um and then the conversation went to all right like what do you want to do with it and a lot of work needed to go into it and still needs to go into it and so did the stereo they had to do it was just a fun mindset of let's just take on this project together and if we like it we can um do do one or two more but to come back around to it like i got in that car it's a convertible and like just cruising roof down it is it is so leisurely austin's a really good town for this too like we'll drive it to the boat sometimes because it's usually hot here.
9:21Tate:Like the weather is so conducive to having a convertible driving this. It's a 74 caddy driving it is like driving a boat. It is. It sways. It's big. It's so fun. It's yeah, it is. It's not allowed on the highway. No, but seriously, like we do have a couple of rules with that. And one of the rules is, is we keep it on, um, city streets, city streets. It's great. We went cruising the other night though to get an ice cream or where are we going to get something i wanted something but we went at we went at sunset oh we took it to clark's for dinner but no we did something else though h remember we were driving down downtown it was beautiful i mean that's every day now yeah i don't know it's it's really really it's fun though it's fun it's great so now now i'm officially a car person it makes me laugh because i feel like when you were in high school did you like just drive around for fun yes oh my grandparents they like drive around for fun as well you kind of lost that and i'm glad you you got back to that that is you you nailed it i i used to i had an amazing vancouver drive which obviously i took you on and i'm going to take the neighbors on when when they come visit over over the holidays um and and this is it i have a great austin drive by the and I did it.
10:39We had a great drive that we did the first time you were pregnant, but we were doing that drive because I think being in the car was helpful for you.
10:47Tate:And we didn't have bubs, so it was just the two of us. Yeah. And I did that drive for the first time ever the other day. Sorry, for the first time since that the other day because I just wanted to be in the car and have the tunes cranking. Just ripped a bunch of phone calls as well. But you also had the tunes cranking Saturday night. No, it wasn't Saturday night. Thursday night what did we do Thursday we did something we got back I was going to bed but I had to go downstairs one more time to turn the lights off and Harrison was in the basement blasting EDM by himself and I could hear it and I was just like what is happening but our house is three stories so like I can't hear it in our bedroom but you were having a party so I had Thursday Night Football on.
11:30Tate:Yeah. But, I'm like, I'm a game on the background, game in the background type of guy. And so, I didn't really care what the announcers were saying. And, and so I put the music on and got into, got into some stuff that I was feeling. And, I had my laptop in front of me too. So it was like a true, a true triple task. Because that's the big thing is when, historically, before I really fell in love with my, late night dinner runs i love the sushi run last night just laptop you asleep or asleep in front of that tv athletic beer in hand that's become a daily routine it's also funny because i know like my work colleagues are like they're starting to they're now on the circuit of getting like the the 10 30 p.m emails again but they know they know everyone knows no replies till the morning okay good okay but here's the thing about you doing the TV with the laptop you know that they say you can have a hangover from too much multitasking teach their own there's something calming to me about having the TV having a game on in the background a drink in hand and cranking through cranking through work I love that though I think that that that reminds me of the time that you and I went to Miami the week before Christmas and like did a bunch of laptop stuff but like just walked around to different places thanksgiving week is one of my most productive weeks of the year you always say that i love it every year you say that in christmas i like have a to-do list of things for thanksgiving week and you go harder between christmas and new year's than like any other time you always say you're always like this is why i put my foot on the gas because everyone else takes it off yeah that definitely wasn't the case last year no we just had a baby um but we'll see this year okay let's talk about your lack of important to vacation lack of ability to keep track of airpods of any kind because what he wanted to talk about was how harrison keeps losing his airpods so he transitioned to the cord the corded headphones he ordered two pairs last week and he announced to me this morning he's lost both pairs it's it's a you problem you need to you need to admit that admitting is the first step i love my i love the the one pair just i think julie stole no i was gonna just say who influenced you to get the corded pair yes i think i'm team corded headphones and then i realized last night at dinner i left the the headphones at um at the sushi restaurant the problem with the corded headphones is there's no way to know they're yours like there's no yeah i'm waiting for the corded headphones to also be a little more high quality but i don't think they're gonna i think corded headphones are flex i know the new flex so we're far we're far enough away now from the the AirPods coming out, that they are a flex again.
14:18Tate:They've come back around. They're now retro. So I agree. It's cool to have them. Yeah. I think the sound quality, not in the ears, but the microphone, I think it's better than the AirPods. Well, that's a TikTok thing. People will talk into that. Maybe you'll start seeing me do some TikToks with the headphones. But I already ordered a new pair. They arrive on Thursday when this comes out. Why the heck do they arrive on Thursday? I don't know. It took a while, but it's two pairs for$16. Well, it is. Are they the Apple ones? No, it doesn't. sound like oh i didn't even know apple still sold them yeah you can get them straight from apple i think i have i do think that might make a difference you're you might be getting the knockoff brand which might not be as good quality okay so we'll we're gonna take care of that today so how much are apples they're like 25 i think that that it might work okay done we're gonna do those get them on amazon and then what we're gonna do is we're gonna tape um uh we're gonna tape something we're gonna tape something pink for bubs on there so we know they're mine because i did teach you at least the other day by accident.

18:28Apparently, we know whose card it is.
18:30Tate:Oh, no way. Yeah. Well, Neighbor T does. Neighbor T knows. This guy, he's the most interesting man in the world. I sent him the photo. And in classic, Neighbor T, you know, he writes like a whatever nice. And then I showed the note. I like text a picture of the note I left. And he's like, I know who owns this. And he's like, I also know someone else who's selling one. And he put me and the other guy selling one on text. Oh, wow. Yeah. I was like, I didn't know this. It's like the El Camino. Do all El Caminos have those really cool truck beds? Yeah. That's an El Camino. That's the definition of.
19:07Okay.
19:08Tate:They're cool, aren't they? Yeah. But that wasn't our target car number two. No, target car number two was an SUV. Yeah, but I don't want to say what type of car. Because they don't kind of... You know what big difference between you and I? What? like i feel like there's i like to you like to just share everything and like this is a great example i don't want to share anything about the car until the car comes like the type of car and then i want like okay but you you gatekeep so hard that you officially own the caddy and still won't talk about it that's where you so you're right you're right i'm over share you're under share but we should meet in the middle and be like okay you've had the caddy for over two months i you could discuss it when it does come to sharing i feel like one thing i used to do online is like i would like take a photo or take a video and like sit on it and be like okay i'm gonna put this up in a week or two weeks or three weeks or like at the end of the weekend and then like you'd you'd always say like it's never gonna go up and i think yes a lot of the times it never ends up going up and so i've tried to know like point and shoot did my instagram because it's not aim fire t boone pickens that's who i saw accredited quote too so um i'd like to talk about or i think it could be interesting to talk about um your pregnancy oh what about it um i feel like there's something very different going on in this pregnancy than last Well, I'm having just crazy back pain and neck pain Yes, that is exactly what I was referring to This to me, I know it's a thing for a lot of people I'm worried though because it's happening early New development Yeah, I'm like if this is now, what's 30 weeks look like?
21:00Mm-hmm
21:01Tate:That we're not trending in a good direction You're a champ though So I'm going to a chiropractor And I didn't realize chiropractors were controversial What? Yeah No way, why? They can cause a stroke. I think, well, I don't want to misspeak, but I feel like aren't chiropractors not actually doctors? Yeah, but they make you call them doctor. I got to Google this. Okay. But here's the thing. A lot of people say they can make it worse. Some people say that they can cause a stroke. I did actually have a girl DM me of somebody that she knew that it didn't. She ended up having a seizure, I think. I don't know.
21:41Tate:But the majority of people are saying chiropractic practices helped them during pregnancy. I don't know what else to do. I don't think this is a cause for acupuncture. I think this is a chiropractic issue, so I have to go. They are like doctors. They're chiropractic doctors. They are not medical doctors. They're not MDs. And there's a lack of evidence.
22:08Well, assume.
22:09Tate:overstated claims not a lot of evidence that it works disagreements within the field we live in a world of overstated claims i mean we should have a full overstated claims episode who who else the the food industry is the craziest one to me well one of our like i when i look at the stuff that is on some of these packages it is snake oil but it's our things we dm'd this and we're not gonna do it right now yes guy rebrands gushers there is a brand at our house right now and like call them by name i i will call them by name and we but i will call them by name oh well okay it is it is snake oil it's like it's like it is crazy what it says it that it can do to you alex just gave me a bunch of that and i took some and just nothing it's a happens it's candy that pretends like it.
23:09Tate:It's so good. I can eat the whole bag. It is the most delicious gummy. I have it as an alternative to SmartSweets because we don't have SmartSweets in the house. I eat it as candy. I go to it. You can have the whole package. And you won't feel anything. Correct. I guess. I don't know. Okay. Well, interesting. Yeah. Interesting. The other thing that I want to discuss is I want to get an angel tree kid. A couple. Love this. I watched a video today of a girl and she was like, I was an angel tree kid. And what an angel tree kid is, they're at churches, they have the trees, they're at Walmart, they're at various locations, but they have a tree.
23:44Tate:And on the tree, there's an ornament with the kid's name, his age, his or her, their size. And then you, and it's to help their parents be able to afford Christmas. And then you have to spend, I think, a minimum of$30 on them. You see videos of people doing much more than that. But you then go and do Christmas shopping for them. I believe you wrap it or their parents wrap it. I don't know who wraps it. But anyways, you give it to them. I remember getting kids' names off of the tree at church when I was little. But today, and I had forgotten about this angel tree concept, but today I got served a video, and it was a girl saying, I was an angel tree baby.
24:22Tate:She had four siblings. She had a single mom. One of her siblings had some health issues. She was like, we were dirt poor. She was like, here's the thing about Christmas around school is you go to Christmas and everyone's talking about it. And then after Christmas, everyone says, hey, what did you get for Christmas? And she used to dread it because her answer would be nothing. But when she was an angel tree kid, she got this doll like the family gave her some Barbie doll. She said it was her prized possession. And like she was so proud to be able to go to school and say, like, I got this Barbie doll.
24:53Tate:And she had got shoes and she got clothes. And it like really made such a big impact on her. And so Bubz will be too young to understand it now, but I do want to take her. You know, I want her to understand that every year we get the Angel Tree Kids and we take her and we go and we buy it for them. Yeah, it's amazing. I do have something to potentially build off this for. Okay. So we've obviously been talking a lot about do we do a Christmas party this year or do we not do a Christmas party? what if we do a Christmas party and we make it a toy drive I would love it I would love it H that would be the best thing ever and we find a space and and that's our ask is hey come you know we'll do cocktails and bites from whatever we'll make it fun and please bring a toy and then we'll find an awesome local charity to partner with yeah I love that Okay, I'm so down.
25:56Tate:Well, fine. I actually have the charity that we can partner with. Okay. Or I have two. Perfect. We can email to see, like, would you be interested in toys? Okay. That's a great idea, though. Okay. Okay, cool. Because I do think that people, this is the time where you start to get in the giving mood. But I think a really easy way is this angel. You get the name of the kid. You get the size. You get the age. You go shop directly for that kid. Yeah, it sounds like a phenomenal initiative. I think it's, I remember doing it and then I saw this video and I was like, oh my gosh. So we'll do that. Um, eventually bubs will do that with us.
26:30Tate:Yes. It's the season for gift giving, but that doesn't mean you should forget about yourself. So make your list and check it twice and prep yourself for Merit's annual sale coming soon. Okay, Thanksgiving, Friendsgiving. How much you cooked. So we went to this ranch. It was a little over an hour away from the city.
27:57Tate:30 people came. So many kids came. It was like fall foliage. There was a creek running through the ranch. It was out of movie. Imagine the best Friendsgiving you can think of and it was better than that. Well, that's the thing is I've never had a Friendsgiving that like lives as a – that is on par with a traditional Thanksgiving. Yes. Okay. That's a great way to put it. It would be a stellar Thanksgiving day. Like normally I find my Friendsgivings are like super – They're fun. They're fun but like it's not that different than like a normal Friday barbecue that we'd have. Right. Which like often are kind of potluck form and or someone's cooking and so on and so forth.
28:43But like this felt like Thanksgiving. And so now the fact that this year we get two Thanksgivings, I am pumped on.
28:50Tate:It's awesome. Yeah. So what all did you make? Because you and neighbor T kind of like co-cooked. Yeah. So I was in charge of meat. So Friday night we fried chicken on the open fire, which was the first time I've ever done that. It was unbelievable. And that is my new favorite dish to make, especially in that setting. It was it was a blast. And we also smoked beef ribs. And then Saturday for the main event, did a little classic dog and and burgers for lunch. This was a pre this was this was the meal before the meal, the meal before the meal. and then for the main event we smoked pork ribs and did two turkeys.
29:38We did one turkey fried first time ever and then one hybrid smoked and then finished in the oven.
29:46Tate:It was okay so it was unbelievable. Thank you. And somebody asked you have you always been into cooking? No. And your answer was so cute. You lit up because you were excited that he asked you. Thank you. Yeah it was like I was kind of in shock by the way but of you you like had you fried the chicken and then you needed something to like dry it not dry it on but let it cool off on and you had bought every single thing necessary to do all three of these meals well thank you I was just like what he has like the great thing like when I uh went through my single period over um out of my past relationship that's when like I really started to pick up cooking and it was weird like I was making a lot of meats that ended up being for like either just me or me and you know a couple friends and I like you and your date that night no like I'd have you know whatever Alex and Jake come over but like there'd be a you know 12 pound brisket that we would have smoked and it was like did you ever have a girl over and make her dinner this is just an unproductive conversation it's just interesting did i ever make a date dinner of course oh okay cute but like smoking brisket before you was a smoking brisket for for dates yeah oh yeah isn't that cool he had you loved it like you you made us like actually i started smoking meat for the first time in in san francisco oh that's when i got my first traeger so you're kind of interested in this yeah uh but i think when I really like poured fuel on the fire was.
31:26Tate:Pun intended. Was probably only two plus years ago. And like, I just loved it. When you think of personal brands. You find it calming and relaxing. You having a fried chicken skin brand, like this fits nicely into kind of your wheelhouse. Kind of a food guy. You're kind of a food guy. Yeah. Well, falling into the packaged food industry was a result of how much I love food and large leading out and how can we make snacks at home as good as at a restaurant or fresh made. So overall, how would you grade your performance? I'll never grade it other than I actually had a lot of fun. And I think it's just weird because thinking back to my first Thanksgiving with Alex's family, I feel like I would go there and just like kind of sit and be a consumer.
32:22And like I wasn't an active participant in those. And so like I really love being an active participant and like being able to give and share and contribute.
32:32Tate:Cook, make a part. So do you think, okay, so let's, during Thanksgiving when you're told to bring a dish, but let's say it's a fried turkey and you're the one frying the turkey, does that count as the couple's contribution or not? 100 % I think that that when a dish is allocated it's allocated to a house it's not allocated to an individual so if we're in charge with a side like it's not you have a side and I have a side our house brings a side or a main so I really agree with that I think like if I make a pie or something then that counts as like Alex and Harrison yeah magnetic me has the cutest clothes and let me tell you what they are the most practical thing on the planet the other day I was wearing my magnetic me pajamas, the adult version.
33:20Tate:And my neighbor said, Oh my gosh, are those magnets? I was like, yes, the best breastfeeding pajama on the planet. You guys in magnetic me is the cutest patterns for both kids and adults and the softest fabric ever. I cannot tell you how often Tate and I are both in magnetic me magnetic me is seriously a game changer. Parents. If you haven't tried these clothes with the easy to use magnetic closures for your own little one. Now is the time. And they also make the most amazing holiday presents for both mom and baby. So if you're listening to this, it is the best gift that you can possibly give somebody.
34:00Tate:Trust me, you need Magnetic Me to make changing time easier for you and your baby. And they have a special Black Friday sale starting November 21st. Get 25 % off select styles. These make the perfect gift for the holidays or you can stock up for your little ones no code needed this won't last long so go to magneticme.com that's magneticme.com and at what age do you think people age into bringing a dish to thanksgiving i'm confused by the question so like i started making the pumpkin pie two three years ago i guess but up until then like i just kind of knew my parents had it covered for our house like at At what point do you branch off from your parents and become your own individual?
34:44Tate:What age? Oh, well, if you go back to my prior definition, it was by house. So when you move out, do you see what I'm saying? Like, yeah. Okay. So when you move out and you live in your own house, you bring your own dish. Yeah. Okay. I think that's good. I think it's a dish per house. Not per last name, per house. Yeah. I mean, that gets what that what if you have a big family? i mean yes you you have a very big family so if you can't bring one dish so if you live under the house and under the roof then you okay i get it but when you move out let's when you're in college what do you bring a dish no but in college you're still like when you're back visiting you're living under that household oh so that does okay i like that so when you when you graduate college though let's say you move out on your own then you bring a dish yeah you say hey i'll bring the pumpkin pie or something exactly okay now if you don't know how to cook that well and you go to the store and buy something do you think it's cheating to then replate it into your own dish i think it is way better to go to the if like i hated cooking forever okay and so like why force someone to do something they don't want to do like p the people don't care if it's homemade the people care that it tastes good.
36:01So like I'm cooking because I want to be cooking. And so people don't want to be cooking. I would say like 100 % go to the store and bring it.
36:11Tate:But do you bring it in the store container or can you replate it? I think you want. I think you plate it. But I don't think you mislead about plating it. Okay. So you can plate it. What if you go to the store and buy mashed potatoes, but you take them home and you add some butter and some herbs and some things to it? Some bacon bits. Then highly encouraged. But is it then a hybrid? Yeah, but I would just own it. okay i would just own whatever path you take i love when it's something's homemade though on thanksgiving i really like when everybody brings their dish but that's why like if if it's that's why i would say plate it because if it's plated then people are naturally going to think that and like i don't ask if it's homemade because like but you can tell and you're judging out i agree you can tell yes you can you can tell if something is homemade or store-bought no way there's just no way pumpkin pie yes so pies maybe i'm not a pie guy though i mean mashed potatoes is like the number one thing not stuffing stuff i like stovetop stuffing though but green bean casserole but there's so many variations you can tell there's so many variations of how you can make things like are you buying the basic like 99 cent gravy packet or like no you can tell if somebody cooked their sweet potato casserole in their own dish and then brought it you can tell it's like cooked on the sides.
37:25Tate:I completely agree. It's cooked. And that's what they bring it in. I think that that's what plating solves. But I think you'd be surprised at how many people do store-bought. Which I highly encourage. I'm okay with store-bought and then you make it. Yeah. I'm okay with that. I do like a couple dishes homemade. What do you think is the best Thanksgiving side? I think it's stuffing and it's not close. I think the best Thanksgiving side to bring somewhere and to make is 100 % mac and cheese. Why? Because I think mac and cheese, the, I think people, one, always love it. And two, it's, it's hard to make bad mac and cheese.
38:08Like it's, it is almost a, and I will say the mac and cheese that was brought to our friends giving was a 10 out of 10 mac and cheese. It was phenomenal. She killed it. If she didn't kill it, it still would have been an 8 out of 10.
38:25Tate:Right. Okay. She did do a 10 out of 10. But overall, the food was amazing. I agree on the mac and cheese. And there was like, there was lots of store-bought items at this and they were really, really good. What I love is someone brought Texas Roadhouse. I was just about to say. I actually, I want to re-pivot this. I think if you're going to, I really want to re-pivot this. If you go store-bought, nail the store you're buying them at. I initially went like, you're just doing kind of basic, like off the shelf stuff like the person who brought Texas Roadhouse rolls with the cinnamon butter slam dunk they may have been the biggest hit of anything because that's the best place to get rolls yes and that's and then you bring the butter it was such a hit I had to it was so good actually maybe I should suggest to my mother because she gets her rolls from this place in Oklahoma that's like pretty good but we live near Texas Roadhouse okay I still need to go to Texas Roadhouse still haven't been It's a great restaurant for bubs.
39:25Tate:We're not eating out as much with bubs. Bub's loves to run around right now. We're in run around mode. So we're not doing as many dinners out with the bubberator. She had a new development today. She, for the first time, clearly told us she wanted to go outside. She walked to the front door. She pulled out her bike and she went and got her papados. And then she started slamming on the glass. She started banging on the front door and we were like, oh, she wants to go outside. And Harrison took her outside of the coffee shop and she was so happy. She also gave me a this and I knew she was hungry.
39:58Tate:She wanted huevos. She put her hand to her mouth. But she's been doing that. She's not that consistent with her doing it. Because I think that sometimes if she's a little bit hungry, then she can do that. I think if she gets too hungry, she like loses the ability to do that. But this whole situation with the front door today. No, this is what she does when she gets too hungry. she started to but also i noticed um she's got her all done's mixed up because i was mid feeding the other day she gave me the all done signal i said are you all done i took it away she's like wait she didn't say wait but she was like wow and i was like oh she wants it back so another thing i've noticed she wasn't all done she doesn't always like when at what point do babies start digesting everything you say so like what i mean by that is like her new my new favorite thing that she does is besos where she gives you a kiss and you say besos besos besos besos but you you may say it two three times and she clearly doesn't hear you and then you'll say it like the fourth time and she hears it and then she knows you gotta go in for a kiss what was i saying the other day to them tate and winnie and they would oh um uber eats is here i was saying poyo to them and they would both come running over to me because they were hungry and they wanted the chicken That is amazing.

43:00Tate:Well, I want to talk about the manners that the kids had at the Friendsgiving. so there were two kids that walked in they were young girls and they shook your hand and they said hi i'm so and so nice to meet you love children shaking hands is that something you want to instill in tate is her her walking up to somebody making eye contact shaking their hands saying hi i'm tate 100 and importantly i'm not sure if you know that saw this but when they left oh you were asleep when they left they walked around and uh said goodbye to everyone no they didn't they were so polite so we were discussing what is one thing that older kids traits older kids have that you value as a as a young kid parent that you want Tate to have and there was a lot of please and thank yous necessity I think that is so lovely and then there was a lot of handshaking going on and I just thought all the kids there were so polite yeah I was I I was I loved it.
44:02I found that they laid a great example for the path that I want Tate to follow.
44:09Tate:And then on the way home, we learned something unique. And so my question to you is, what is the most unique thing you can do to make our kids stop crying? Per earlier conversation and what I enjoy, play house music. She loves Fred again. Fred again. What's the song? What's the number one song that Fred again has on Spotify? victory lap or something with a v she loves she loves victory lap she you kept playing that song we had to listen to like 25 times yeah but bubs she just is in the back because she's big by large let me let me let me do some caveats here okay okay so she loves music like when we're cruising she's like we're we're riding down the street some luke combs she's a country girl when she gets in a mood and when she's crying that's when you got to go house that's when Fred again is it's unbelievable did you know that Fred again has a song called Tate no he doesn't Julie he does we're playing it no no because the YouTube we're not we'll get uh we'll get a story we can play it and we'll cut it and then just say cutting back in wow okay we're coming we're cutting back in he is about Tate McRae.
45:24Tate:Yes. It was a good song. Bubz will love that. You got to play her her song that Fredigan wrote for her. Very special. Oh, that's really cute. Yeah, what are other things that I feel like this is a common trend, though, like, there's random things that parents can do that make their kids stop crying. I think it's a distraction of something that they like, though. But yeah, I'm sure that if we ask people, they'll have funny answers. But like for Bubz, you can walk her over to her play gate and show her that it opens like this. She loves that. Then that's usually like, oh, and then she gets excited.
45:59Tate:Okay. Now we're going to go to things we DMed each other. All right. McDonald's turns Happy Meal box into a blank canvas inviting kids to draw how they feel. So they've removed the smiley face and now it's literally like a coloring box, okay? Okay. So you go to the store, you get the, you go to McDonald's, you get the Happy Meal and then they have colors and they can color their feelings. How are you feeling on it? I think it's great. I think it's great. I'm for it. Yeah, I think this is a really, really cool campaign. I love the effort of encouraging kids discovering their emotions and the dialogue with parents.
46:41Tate:And being able to communicate their emotions. Totally. And on the topic of my emotions, I love this. I think it's great. I do think it's kind of weird on where it's coming from and it's like where's the research on educating children on the value of a balanced diet on balanced eating and like yeah so you're kind of like they get their McDonald's but they express their emotions here's the thing they're eating at McDonald's anyways I had McDonald's 10 days ago I love McDonald's Oh, you didn't hear this story? No. We were at the neighbor's and their siblings were in town and we started talking about McDonald's.
47:32I went home and when I got home, I had my classic order waiting for me.
47:37Tate:What did you have? Do you know what my order is? I did a minor switch up this time. Two quarter pounders? No. One McChicken. Ten-piece nugget. normally a Big Mac instead did like this other cheeseburger thing I forget the name of it and how was it uh to me I'm a McDonald's twice a year type of guy I love it but how was it it was good it was great but like I'm good for six months and how did you feel the next day I mean cause and effect that may be the same that's the saying what else was I doing that day Drinking, I would imagine. Okay, so you were just like fine anyways. Oh, you're looking for causation, not correlation.
48:22Tate:Thank you. You knew what I was going for, Jules. For correlation, not causation. Yeah, I believe in balanced nutrition. Because like their French fries, they hit. Their Diet Cokes, they hit. If I have their chicken nuggets, it ruins my day. McDonald's is a treat. And I think that that should be communicated. Well, maybe what will happen here is parents learn this about their kids expressing their emotions. So at dinnertime, they give them a piece of paper and crowns too, and they say, draw how you're feeling. And then the kids, because they just say McDonald's, like, I feel like crap. Yeah, but you see what I'm saying?
48:55Tate:Give me some clean food. It teaches them to use the exercise. Yes, I love what the exercise is about. It just, it feels weird where it's coming from. No, no, no, I'm with you on that. I'm with you on that. Who it's coming from. Well, just because it's kind of a, no, I'm okay with it coming from McDonald's because I like the message of expressing your emotions. It's called a happy meal. Emotions are already in the mix. Which is one of the most genius. I feel like McDonald's is like a pretty evil organization. Call them out. They're standing behind their happy meals. Ronald McDonald. I think that.
49:35Tate:I'm not going to defend McDonald's right now. so I think that's that's my my that's my take on it okay it's like I think that there's a lot of things that they can be doing to their food um to make it didn't they do some things and they add the McGriddle I I add a salad the McGriddle is a healthy option I think when when you look at the amount of preservatives and additives in those food and what it does to shelf life and the benefits that that has to um to their margins at the sacrifice of of consumer health is like it's pretty egregious so okay i mean i'm interested that you're saying this um i guess i always knew it but yeah call them out okay there we go harrison with the shop shop a little more local support your local burger shack pool burger that is a heck of a burger but there's going to be a price discrepancy peterry's there we go there we go now that is good stuff peterry's is good uh ron's hamburger shack tulsa oklahoma all right speaking of food let's stay on the food uh train here okay so there was a designer who rebrands gushers as a healthy fruit chew and it's shocking because everything he puts on the package is believable not it's not believable it's true you ready so it's true by by labeling standards yes yeah the name was changed to sun-kissed pear fruit juice bursts okay they put a big pear on there because it's a fruit make it look healthy and pear is the number one ingredient and then yes whoa pear puree pear puree pear puree is the number one ingredient in Gushers.
51:30Tate:Yeah, in this one. Because the one thing that blows my mind, I want you to, I think we should check that, is speaking of, I actually may not want to go on this tangent yet. We can save it. But speaking of misleading labeling, like, you know, cauliflower pizza. Well, the number one ingredient is not cauliflower. Like, what? It's the number three ingredient. It's corn syrup, sugar, pear puree. Okay, thank you. So similar to cauliflower pizza. okay so then here's the kicker for me yeah 100 plant-based and it is because there's no gelatin in it no a lot of a lot of these a lot of these gummy companies do this 100 percent it's ridiculous people would be like oh it's ridiculous it's a plant gummy yeah plus vitamin c which it is because it has like 60 of your daily vitamin c or something like that in it which is messed up by the food standards and made with real pear puree okay and once he was done rebranding it you would buy it and so now can you turn around and read the ingredient label jules corn syrup sugar pear puree corn starch fructose maltodextrin palm oil cotton seed oil i'm not gonna be able to pronounce all these glycerin grape juice concentrate citric acid carrageenian monoglyceride sodium citric malic acid vitamin c blah blah plant-based 100 % plant-based to me to me this is just an unbelievable example of the overhaul that we need in food labeling yes that is that is what this is because i think when you can see it with something like Gushers, it allows you to look at other things that you may perceive as healthy.
53:25And a great one is cauliflower pizza, right? Like you look at what's the number one ingredient in cauliflower pizza, not cauliflower. You got to turn the light.
53:34Tate:You have to turn the package around and read the ingredients. Yeah, for sure. I was just the other day on three wishes cereal. I could pronounce every single one of them. There's not that many ingredients. And I was like, Okay, great. And I really do like that as the rule of thumb. Can you pronounce it? Do you know what it is? We do with Bubz all the time on like chicken sausages. Sometimes you turn the chicken sausages around, your jaw will hit the floor at that ingredient panel. Sometimes it's chicken and virgin olive oil and salt pepper. Can we call it that brand that we've been using? Because I really like them.
54:04Tate:For the sausages? We'll save it for another time. I just can't remember who it is. Maybe we'll post it. But just read the ingredient panel. I bought frozen turkey burgers the other day. I think this is a really interesting DM. Funny enough, can you actually show me the photo? I haven't seen it. It's a video. Okay. I'll send it to you. Yeah, it speaks to the larger problem we have on food labeling. Read the labels. Okay, I can't see it from that far, but I trust. Okay, well, guys, we'll wrap up there. Thank you all very much for listening. Thank you. Oh, Baker of the Week. Oh, wait, wait, wait.
54:41Tate:No, next week's Thanksgiving. When's the episode dropping? Wednesday. Wednesday. Next week we're dropping on Wednesday. Monday and Wednesday. Monday and Wednesday during your travel days. Wednesday, number one travel day of the year. Jules will be on an airplane. Yeah. No, we're doing Monday's baby gear. Wednesday, some shopping guides. Yes, okay. Be helpful for Black Friday. I'm going to do a shopping guide on my page. Wow. You heard it here first. Maybe. Maybe. Maybe. And he throws a maybe in there. We're trying to get Harrison to post more content. I might start posting it for him. Okay, bye.
55:18Thank you.

We also get into solo date nights, the official debut of the Caddy, the comeback of corded headphones (??), and if it’s better to overshare or gatekeep (guess which one of us does which LOL). Plus: Tate’s newest developments, the most random thing that instantly stops her from crying, and two wild DMs — McDonald’s blank-box Happy Meals and a designer who rebranded Gushers into a “healthy” fruit chew.
