Guests
No guests are featured. Hosts are Harrison and Jules (co-hosts throughout).
Guest backgrounds
Not applicable (no external guests). The hosts discuss their lives as parents of young children (including a 5-month-old “Rocket Man/Rocky” and an older child “Tate”), and their Austin-area community.
Key claims
- Their street’s community grew after hosting a crawfish boil; they recommend streetwide barbecues and potlucks to build connection.
- They debate rule-following vs rule-breaking, including emotional-support animal “faux” practices and left-handedness being discouraged.
- It’s “too early” for Halloween for some, but their neighborhood is already going big.
Notable examples
- A flight delay story: a pilot allegedly falsified rest-time paperwork; they discuss accountability and contacting airline customer service.
- Padel growth: they try it, love the energy, and sign up for lessons.
- Halloween: a neighbor orders pink skeletons and plans porch decorations; they plan to decorate soon and discuss neighborhood Halloween logistics.
- Left-handedness: cites NIH/Johns Hopkins research on fetal hand preference and potential negative effects of forcing right-handedness.

0:30October 1st, only on Netflix. Mr. President, my company formed me of the explosion on our rig. On October 2nd. Causing massive water displacement and triggering a tsunami. They all heap the blame on me. Tom Cruise is. Digger got us into this mess. And Digger's gonna dig us out. From the director of Birdman and The Revenant. What would happen if I stopped doing it? You stalled. You freeze to death. That's what. With great power comes great deniability. I'm not the first daddy. Digger. See the trail online. Only in the years October 2nd. Rated R. Under 17, not a middle without parent. Ready? Okay.
1:08Okay. Okay. Let's start with the opening off the top. Welcome back to another episode of Two Parents in a Podcast. Nori Minich is in my DMs. Oh, what is she saying? I haven't read it yet. Oh, was it last night? Yeah. What was she responding to? I have no clue, but she was, I could tell she was like kind of on a tear last night. She kept sending me Instagrams and stuff. Do you remember the first time your parents embarrassed you?
1:41No. Do you? No, I want to dig deep on this one because I'm sure there's a funny like second or third grade story in there. Because that would be like peak when it would probably happen and you could remember it. You know, I don't think my parents have embarrassed me. like I don't think they've like done something where I was like oh that was embarrassing like my dad will I mean he does it on purpose like we'll be like uh checking out at the grocery store he'll be like this one's on you I'll be like no it's not like that kind of stuff yeah that's funny that's funny though I don't I don't know I don't really get embarrassed like that here's more so what I'm talking about like I remember uh like uh growing up when my mom would pick me up from elementary school she'd pick me up in in a convertible and i remember like i found the music that i'm like in sixth or seventh grade the music she was listening to like wasn't like the cool music for a sixth grader and like i was so embarrassed of the music yeah do you kind of get what i'm getting at like really dumb stuff right i truly can't think of one like i'm trying to think of a time i don't have one okay i don't have one yeah which is gonna be my goal for rubber oh i'm gonna embarrass rubber all the time are you kidding me but i think there's a difference between like jokely embarrassing and then like actually embarrassed like you know if your mom turns up whitney houston to come and get you like that's funny
3:08right yeah as opposed to like i'm actually embarrassed at what my mom wears type thing my mom wore a lot of brown growing up i remember that that's so funny embarrassing well jules you were traveling yeah new york how was it oh it was great yeah i was at the youtube well google um offices for a youtube podcast event okay very nice we love youtube we love google and everyone was super nice no super fun you love gemini and how how are the travels the travels weren't good and the travels weren't especially good it's because like i'd wake up at four o 'clock in the morning not great and then the plane didn't end up taking off until 10 30 okay and why is that jules why is that because her pilot was a big fat liar jules caught her pilot lying and like the airline didn't what what happened the flight attendants caught the air the airline lying because this this is one you know when when when a friend uh and i know jules wouldn't let me call her friend so work colleague you know says something to you and like you know it's about to just kind of brush by and then you realize like well like this is major that's what happened with jules jules like shares this story and we're like no no no no no proper like this this is this is This is not okay.
4:30So you had a big, like, I think you had a big thing happen. Yeah. So my flight was supposed to take off at 6.50 AM. And at 6.50, we got a notification that there was a 20 minute delay. And the flight attendant did say something to us of like, oh, they're just trying to figure out something with the pilot's timing. Hold on. Are you boarded? Are you on the plane? We are boarded. We are on the plane. We've been on the plane for, you know, a normal amount of time and we just get the notification that, hey, it's delayed 20 minutes. And then like after that, we suddenly get the notification that it has been delayed multiple hours.
5:08And then we get, they deplane us and they make everyone stand in the waiting area and they say, we will be giving you an announcement soon. Just stand here and wait. And what they told us was that the pilot had timed out, which like, okay, great. But then they go into the details of why the pilot timed out, which was that pilots need a full eight hours of rest from the time that they clock out to the time that they clock in the next day. Our pilot fudged his timesheet and future timed or future dated in the time that he got in so that it was a full eight hours from the time that he clocked out the night before.
5:48And someone caught him because it was future timed and he didn't have the full eight hours rest and he lied it's a huge deal because had some so the reason this feels like a 10 out of 10 problem to me like in terms of no you can't call it a 10 out of 10 because 10 out of 10 would be like a drunk pilot so like we can't give this no but i i kind of gotta put this like lying is bad lying is bad like i'm not saying it's not no So like to me, my question very much goes like if you're doing this, which is one like not OK, where else are you pushing the line? And like pilots with with the with the vehicle they are operating and how many people are in there like we can have zero leniency on the rules.
6:36Well, so I so the eight hour rest time was enacted for a very good reason. And they do the same thing with truck drivers, semi drivers. Like when you're operating these large vehicles, you do like you can sleep one hour and go drive your own car. Yeah. You know, but I think that these commercially driven vehicles, they've enacted this rest time for a reason. And I actually think the rest time should be longer. I agree. You're going to get eight hours of sleep. Exactly. You can't get eight hours of sleep if you just have eight hours in between. You're going to get five hours of sleep. So like I really agree with you on that.
7:05But to lie about it and then if something would have gone wrong on that airplane, like he would be. and i am anti anti like cancel culture fire them this fire than that this to me feels like a fireball offense well like i just i and my only thing is i i was really appreciated appreciative of like the um folks for telling us what happened just because like i don't know it's nice to know why you are delayed but like he should have had to tell us himself that that was my thing i agree he should had to get on the mic and say i i lied i lied but here's my question and not a fireball fence a serious serious suspension should be suspended yeah how but i'm wondering how often does this happen is this something is this a wink between pilots where they do fudge it and this guy just got caught i hope not and and i really really hope not i don't think so because it is so easy to track like i assume that like julie kind of explained the math on when the flight before landed because like she was taking that same flight home the next day it's like pretty hot especially in an airport like austin not a very big airport pretty easy to track when when the flights are coming in and when they're going out i just would i'd like i'd like to know and what i will say is i feel like often when i'm on a flight the pilots and the flight attendants are talking about like where they're going and where they came from.
8:36So I feel like that's a lot of like small talk between everyone. Like, where'd you fly in from? Where'd you like, where are you going next? And so I think I was like, well, if you came in last night, yeah, that's not that's not eight hours, buddy. I don't know. I don't think people are down to have their lives messed with and the people on the plane's lives messed with. And so shout out to the flight attendant or whoever caught them. Yeah. Shout out to whoever caught them. and I'm glad they told you because I think a lot of times they're like, there's a timing issue so we're not going to take off and it's like, what does that mean?
9:07Yeah. As opposed to this, I'm like, okay, great catch. I don't want him flying the plane. Here's my only thing. My only thing, Jules. Mm-hmm. Jules has said she does not want to share the airline. No. Okay? I don't want to share the airline. And here's my only question to you on that. Do you, do we not think that like, that it is critical that accountability is served here? Yeah, but I think - I want to know what happened. I think the airline did a really good job handling and managing it. I agree with that. But I don't want this pilot. I want to know from this airline that this pilot is being seriously reprimanded for this.
9:44Yeah, but I just don't feel comfortable doxing the airline. I also agree that the airline did a really good job catching it. But what if the airline puts them on another plane? If someone wants to look up who does three flights a day from Austin, Texas to JFK at 6 a.m. noon and 4 p.m., they'll find out. Yeah, but it's not about people figuring it out. It's about like, do we want to take this to the airline and make sure they're holding the pilot accountable? They will. Maybe I'll DM their customer service. Okay, can we do that? Sure. That's what I'm happy with. I'm happy to do that. I'm not into the public shaming.
10:18I actually am not at all. That's not my goal here. my goal though is that is i am very concerned if i were to be on a plane and this pilot would be flying i yeah okay yeah yeah yeah that's very we'll do that okay perfect other than that though jules did you have a good trip it was a great trip on to my favorite restaurant where'd you go westville westville okay talk tell us about the menu i've only ever gotten one thing off chicken Caesar salad what did you get chicken it's a chicken it's chicken Caesar salad with the chicken cutlet. Chuck cutlet. Sorry, cutlet. A side of fries. The look you gave me when I said pie yard versus cutlet.
10:55I've never heard of pie yard in my life. What? Chicken pie yard? I don't know what that word is. It's a thing. We can put a picture up of it. Okay, cool. And a Diet Coke with a lemon. A crisp Diet Coke. And I've only ordered ever one thing there. My friends are like, oh, what should I get? I was, this is what you should get. And they went off path. Oh, they veered. But it's so good. How many people went? Four. okay so fun yeah and just to be clear jules loves this place so much that i asked her i was like hey is there anywhere you'd like me to make a reservation for you jules loves taylor swift you want to go corner store do you want to do the jewels had no nothing nothing she wanted to go westville that's what she wanted that's me i like what i like i don't necessarily like something fancy or because other people like it now i'm the same i have a new annoying thing that we're doing or maybe what we or padel went to padel and are we calling it padel or are we calling it paddle i don't want to love padel i think i love padel i don't want to love it i like i feel like every time someone talks about padel i'm just like come on stop it i think i love it okay it's coming full steam ahead though here's what my dad sent me a statistic and this is a rough stat but maybe there was a thousand courts i do believe we're going to increase we pull the receipts but okay sorry first for the people at home padel is different than paddle ball yes pickleball pickleball pickleball yes yes there's a wall in padel or paddle yeah it's a little more elevated to say like well it's okay there were 30 padel courts in the united states in 2020 the number has since jumped to 1 000 and is expected to top 20 000 padel courts in 2030 okay so basically what padel is is it's pickleball but the court is bigger and you have a wall around it and you can hit the ball off the wall so it's almost like pickleball meets squash okay yes and I've been hearing rumblings about how great it is and for some reason I just like I wanted to hate it and then we went and we played with two friends and we love it and we signed up for lessons we're doing four straight weeks of lessons I think you want to hate it because of the name yes I think so is that that must be it it's taking itself too seriously Padell or Padell I also I hated the pickleball name the pickle pickleball didn't take itself seriously enough okay Padell's taking itself too seriously I'm so excited to play Padell I'm so excited we almost went and played last night it's so fun i was so sore i was sweating my butt off but i i didn't even realize that i was it was a great exercise good for coordination i loved it and do you know a great thing about padel what i mean i say the word i want to punch myself in the face it uh it's a four per it's a doubles game so it's so good to do with that with another couple this is kind of like your first um couple's extracurricular that you're doing together it is yeah i would agree with that and there's a unbelievable uh it's actually crazy i like saw videos about it on on the internet beforehand i didn't realize it was here but it's called padel 39 not an ad at all and it's just like this amazing padel kind of uh the new padel place the new padel place oh i'm familiar with the new padel place it's on the east side yeah and they got all these tvs for games and it's just like it was uh here's my problem with rec sports and it's part of why i actually love high rocks is i find too often like the process of going and doing the rec sport is like kind of depressing.
14:29Like you go to the kickball field and it's some like torn up field and no one's really there. And the lighting's, you know, it's a good point. Not great. And you're going to play at 10 PM and you're playing it. You're playing at a terrible time. Thank you, Jules. And I go to this Padel, this Padel 39 and the energy there was amazing. Every court was full. People were hanging out. Like I was just happy to be there. Everyone's saying hi. so i'm into it second secondarily we went um hit balls last week too with all of our like we went to the public um golf course here and we just put all the kids in the middle and like we all went and like hit balls i was being active the number one underappreciated family activity in austin is to go to the muni golf course at lions and hang out in this little don't tell people uh no we actually need to tell people because the golf course is under there's this whole save the muni golf course because i think there's some questions about if it's going to get sold or not uh and it's they've got this so you have the driving range and behind the driving range there's this covered outdoor area it's not covered are there trees over it oh i mean it's shaded i guess sorry shaded but don't go when it's raining yeah good call it's the shaded area where you can hang out the kids can run around and then they've got food.
15:51We actually talked about it. Should this be a cause that we take on? Maybe. Saving the golf course? Should we? If we go two more times, I'll take it on as a cause. I don't have the bandwidth. I need to talk to the people. I don't have the bandwidth to take on random causes, but I can take it on perhaps. I agree. And I need to talk. I need. But wait, wait, Olivia wants to go tonight. Do you want to go tonight from five to six? This episode is brought to you by Honest. Being a parent of a five month old and a two year old is genuinely just a thousand little decisions a day. From what goes on their skin to what you trust for the everyday messes, the cuddles, the bath time, and the cleanups.
16:25And you guys know that we're really paying extra attention right now to the things that touch our kids' skin multiple times a day. And that's why Honest created Baby Essentials, made for life's most delicate skin. Honest holds every product to their highest standard, which is the Honest standard. They're intentional about every ingredient they put in and every one they leave out. Plus, their products are hypoallergenic and dermatologist tested. Take their Clean Conscious Wipes, for example. They're made with over 99 % water. They're fragrance-free, and there are only seven ingredients in them.
16:58They're also ultra-thick and ultra-soft, which matters when you're using them on everything from a messy face to sticky fingers to the kitchen counter. Their 2-in-1 shampoo and body wash is tear-free, which is a really big one, and gentle enough for both kids. And it comes in lavender, sweet almond, citrus vanilla, or fragrance-free. We've talked on the podcast all about how Harrison and I, we read the labels on everything. And with Honest, we don't have to second guess. And anything that saves me from standing in the store forever, reading every ingredient label is a huge win. As a parent, we just don't have the time or the mental bandwidth to do that every single time.
17:35So every product is designed for the delicate details that matter most. Honest, the mother of all standards. Shop Honest on Amazon, Walmart, and Target. I have another text. from a neighbor. You ready? Okay. The skeletons will arrive in the morning. I'm headed to target and breeds. So I will check the spider section. I love decorations. So I'm going to try to control myself. Your neighbor that decorated is helping you decorate our neighbor, our neighbor, our neighborhood, our street has just like taken the next step. Like we loved it. We thought it was great. Everyone, the past two to three weeks on the street has just been like everyone got back from summer and it's just like so i give one left kind of have these conversations of wow like our street is awesome and people are just like coming back and like leaning in like we got a taco we got a big taco date on going on on tuesday it's it's awesome do you think it's because we give your street such good pr it could be we're getting that working no it's it's not because actually nobody on our street knows.
18:42Nobody on the street listens to this. So we have one neighbor who I call the true north of all things etiquette, happiness. I don't know how to describe them, but like they're the coziest, happiest, comfiest. Here's how I describe them. Okay. They're - They have life figured out. They're the types of people that, and this is something that we're actually going to talk about on the panel tomorrow is when you look 10 to 20 years out and you say, do I want my life to look like this? The answer is yes. Like from, you know, their social life to parenting, parenting, their relationship with their kids, what their kids have turned out like their relationship with each other.
19:27They, they really, they're, they're, they're, they're a great example of how we want life to look in 10 to 20 years. So they have already decorated their house for Halloween. She decorates. Her birthday is September 14th. She says, I always decorate one week after my birthday. Their house looks incredible. She's got pink skeletons, witch hats, and candles hanging from her front porch that light up at night. It looks unbelievable. And it's already out there. And every day when Tate walks by, Tate says skeleton. And she's very obsessed with what's going on in the front porch. So I was like, well, we have to decorate our front porch.
20:07And she's now just texted me telling me she's ordered me the pink skeletons. And she wants to do on our house because our house is flat. We're going to do spiders crawling up it. Are they disco ball pink skeletons? No. I have a vision for your house. And it's like disco cowgirl skeletons. I'm so into the disco. I know. And the cowgirl. And the cowgirl. pink cowgirl hats on disco skeletons bubber just came back her her birthday uh outfit arrived the one uh and arrived after the party and it had a cowboy hat to it and she walked in and she saw that cowboy hat and it was game over she ran right put the hat on very excited so we're gonna go big on halloween because bubber i wasn't sure how we felt about skeletons like i wasn't we went to cvs and there was one of those like things that lights up and the head spins around and I was like are you gonna like this or not and there's a button you push you know in the head the lights go green and it's very scary she loved it she sat there and talked to it so I was like okay we can do scary Halloween because she's she's gonna be into it and I don't want to do too scary of Halloween but I didn't know if we were gonna do skeletons at all if we were just gonna be a pumpkin patch she loves the pink skeletons she loves them I know it's September 25th but like Have you guys decided on the family slash neighbor costume yet?
21:32Yes. So we decided on it last year and we did that the year before. Yeah. So I just am not so sure that this one's going to be feasible. It is. This one's intense. It is so good. Okay. We could tell you. No. No need. But yes, Jules, we do know what it is. We need to start soon because it's going to sneak up on us. What we didn't appreciate, though, is how hard it's going to be. It's going to be great. We're going to have to change one piece of it, though, which is actually going to make it easier. But as long as the answer to your question is, yes, we've thought about it. OK. Do you want another piece we're going to have to change?
22:12No. OK. Yeah. So we are going to be decorating soon. Our pool permit got approved. So we're now we're off to the races on the yard again. Yeah. I would like this yard done ASAP because what I did not account for is that it's time to decorate and our yard has bricks laying in it. Like we got to get this stuff in order so I can decorate the house. Okay. All right. So let's talk about the kiddos. Rocket Man had a play date yesterday for one hour. Adorable. And he started going to the nanny share. and I think I know Rocky's just five months old but I think there's something to babies being around other babies and what it does for them because what it does for Rocky we're noticing and all the kids his wake windows are longer he's staying awake more during the day and he's sleeping better at night so maybe there's something to routine or structure but maybe there's something to him being around other babies and I can just tell like he really likes that he's got I know he's five months old but I swear the kid has a pep in his step well to me the the most interesting thing to track is going to be how he develops relative to Tate.
23:24Yes. Yes. Because him and well, Tate also went to the nanny share early though. She went at four months. He's five months. Yes. But what I think could be very different is he is looking at kids that are six months older and a year and a half older. Got it. And I'm starting to see him do things that Tate was doing way later. Yeah. Yeah, maybe that maybe he will develop faster because he's around kids that are walking and crawling. He's really trying to move. Yeah, he's really trying to move right now. So maybe there will be maybe there's some scientific something to that. But all I have to say is like the nanny share.
24:02It feels good because we're also in a routine. And we know from eight to five, Rocky is also at what we call school. And like yesterday, he wears overalls like he's taking it so seriously. He wears overalls. he's starting to go into, we call it the DJ booth, which is that little table that spins around. And a lot of people were asking me, how did you know he was ready for that? He, he was starting to jump. So he really wants to stand upright and he's got full neck strength. We're also doing the baby bouncer, like Rocky's in activity time. Things are rolling with him. So he's also, yes, he is still in the snoo, but we've moved because the way you transition out of the snooze, you go from we call it the straight jacket to then you put your arms out so he's got his arms out this week so next week he will transition out of the snoo and we'll keep you posted on how he sleeps out of the snoo but he's been giving us five six hour stretches this week since he started the nanny share so we're good on all things sleep right now with rocky jules how's your coffee today it's great yeah it's iced yeah how's your coffee it's really good it's really good i brought that topic to so many people oh oh my god i did great or did you not uh okay what i was trying to do there i didn't land what you want to sip of your coffee no you want to what's your favorite coffee shop perhaps give out uh the 100 gift card to the coffee girl yeah the comments were so good like people i was i was on there reading looking at these coffee shops that people love that are local and i'm very proud of everyone for going to their local coffee shops me as well who's our winner Jules um her name is Jetta Jetta Grubbs I love that name love the name and her favorite coffee shop is Hattie's Coffee House in Whitestown Indiana okay okay and then she said is everyone partial to their regular coffee shop yeah yeah I think so oh yeah like she probably thinks what's hers called Hattie's Coffee House she probably thinks Hattie's is the best ever I think Swedish Hill's the best ever my my palate is trained to this iced coffee that when I get it somewhere else it just doesn't land the same way uh and it was the same way when i lived in venice like the coffee shop by her office that was i like my true north as alex would say well i told jetta i i told her in the comments to dm us because i think that's the easiest way to coordinate but if if you're listening jetta please dm us on dm the pod yeah the pod account on jetta please dm the pod um and congratulations hundred dollar gift card coming to you hattie's coffee house I also love the name Hattie.
26:35I love the name Jetta. Do you want to hear my idea? I guess first what I'd love for people to know is should we kind of keep with this trend of giving away things of topic to the pod? I think it's fun because we learn about the audience. Like I learned a lot about where they're from, what kind of places they go to. Totally agree.
27:02We'll do more giveaways throughout but can i can i'm gonna bury them in the episodes okay because i have an idea for one what is it so i'm planning a date night for us right now okay okay and what is one of my favorite things for us to do on date nights go to a restaurant like a special date night oh the comedy club or yeah i mean within that guys concerts concerts concerts yeah go to an event. Yes. So you know what I want to do for one of our listeners? I want to treat them to a date night event. And so what I'd love the listeners to do is comment on an event happening in their city. It can be a sports game.
27:43It can be a concert. It can be a comedy show. And then we'll pick one and we'll buy them. We'll buy them tickets. Go to SeatGeek and hook them up. Not an ad. So wait, you want people to comment like, hi. Like, hey, Dave Chappelle is in town next week we're gonna buy tickets we'd love to go to a show i'd love to go to a show with my wife or with my husband and we'll do that or you know maybe a celine dion show or uh got it got it got it maybe jonas jonas brothers concert maybe jonas brothers concert that would be the best one okay so that's what you want people to do that's something fun like that okay cool comment that yeah that'll be wow that's an intense one that's fun very nice of you speaking of date nights kind Kind of.
28:29We booked our first couples trip. And what we realized with the neighbors is like, we have never hung out with them, just them. Just the four of us. It's always in with kids. Think about how crazy that is. We see these people anywhere from five to seven times a week. And we can't recall one moment where it was just the four of us. What if you guys get awkward? Like, I don't know what to talk about. And we thought - What did we do? Well, we went for drinks once and we thought that we didn't have any kids there because they went for dinner after. But then we realized we brought Tate. Tate was like four months old at the time.
29:11And we had to bring her because we didn't have a babysitter, but they did. They did. Yeah. And we had to sit outside in the back because it was a no kids place. Like our best friends, like family members, We've never been on a double date because anytime we're out for dinner with him, other couples are there or the kids are there. Speaking of our neighbors, let's talk about this. I like this comment on - Well, can we tell them what we're doing? Sure. So it's neighbor T's birthday. Yep. And so we are taking them to Jackson Hole. Nice. Because he loves the outdoors. Is that why Alex wore that shirt tonight?
29:44Oh, no. But should I wear this to Jackson Hole or absolutely not? Yeah. And we're staying at this incredible hotel called Hotel Yellowstone. We're really excited. it yeah i can't wait wait is hotel yellowstone it's related to the wait isn't that called yellowstone ranch my my nobody can wrap their minds around this why is hotel yellowstone in jackson home i don't know but it looks awesome is that brand not called yellowstone ranch no no no that's called um diamond diamond cross okay never mind sorry sorry sorry do we think we should go to diamond cross ranch while we're there and get some irl merch do they sell irl merch i would guess So do they have a brick and mortar?
30:21I don't know. We'll have to look. I love Jackson Hole. We're going to go to Cowboy Bar. I do love the iconic Cowboy Bar. Yeah. I had a friend get married in Jackson Hole and it was really fun. Okay. Let's talk about this comment. Please dig deep on the podcast about the community y 'all have created because it's effing cool. I, this is about our street. and two things we've already talked about so far is one of our neighbors is decorating our house and the other one we're going on a couple's trip with. And I do think our community on our street is like unbelievable. And it really boils down what?
31:00It feels like it's out of a movie. It does. It is a rare thing where it feels like it's out of a movie. I feel very, very grateful that the street, everyone just like has committed to it the way they they do um so that's number one and i actually want to deep dive into the into the dynamic of how that all played out i don't like have that answer but i do think one really uh i do think one really i think a lot of it's out of your control number one but when i look at what is in our control and i do think one thing that really does bring the block together. And if you're looking at bringing your street together, what I would suggest you do is host a streetwide barbecue.
31:47We've said this before, but really do it because I think that our street feels like we put in the time and invest in our street and then. And if you were to ask me to draw back, like when did the street, when did I really start to see our relationship develop? It was following the crawfish boil. And after that crawfish boil, it felt like things just continued to build. And it just having the time for everyone to come together, eat, have a drink, and importantly, like show like you're committed to the community. So that would be my take on if you're looking to connect with your street and you want to do one thing, bring everyone together for a barbecue.
32:29Like we came home yesterday and we had three packages on our porch from people just on our block. but we do the same thing we're always baking something or we're drawing something or giving some kind of gift we're very good at remembering birthdays on our block and so I do think it's just this outpouring community we just love each other on our street yeah I feel very grateful and for the crawfish boil didn't you kind of just like print the flyers before you had the whole thing yes gotta go before you're ready print them before because you don't need a lot you can just make burgers in the street and tell everyone to BYOB or potluck it even too love a potluck yeah love a potluck we've got i feel like that removes like a cost barrier to entry do you know my latest idea what for the street i'm going to preview here uh the latest idea for the street is to host an outdoor super bowl party oh with a giant screen and so get a big giant outdoor screen and bring everyone together so that's what neighbor T and I are cooking up right now.
33:34Nice. I also still want to do a progressive dinner on the street. I just think picking four houses and having, you know, apps at one dinner, I think it'd be so fun. But that's it. And all for you to take the lead the same way I'll take the lead on the Super Bowl party. Well, I don't want to. I'm not ready to do mine yet. Are you going to project on the side of a house? There's blow up giant screens you can get. Yeah. We used to project on a garage door. Love. That is so classic and cool. the problem with the super bowl party might be is it going to be dark enough it's february it should be good you should just check that you guys could also do a halloween party jules i've been thinking about that the reason why we can't oh we have a halloween everyone goes to the park yeah in our neighborhood which like we just need to call out like there will be over 200 kids at our neighborhood park so we go there yeah and everyone on our street goes there.
34:29And you trick or treat there? Then you all walk and trick or treat together. Oh. While I love Halloween in the neighborhood, it doesn't feel like trick or treating is a big part of it. It feels like the big thing is everyone goes to the park. Like we didn't get a lot of trick or treaters. Then we all go to a spooky street. Yeah. It's a unique street. Like there are hundreds of kids at the park with their parents and everyone's running around. It's madness. It's a blast. And then everyone walks over to this other street and just kind of hangs it on that street. Gotcha. And I guess that street has the treats.
35:02Yeah. We had the Halloween house and then the Halloween party at our neighbors next door. Wait, that's cool. You had the Halloween house. Krispy Kreme donuts as well. More Minich. That's awesome. No, no, no. That's a Jeffrey S. Minich original. The Halloween house. No way. Oh, yeah. Don't tell us more. No, like my dad does like, we got coffins. we got um werewolves we got it's like a creepy halloween house okay um and my mom counts the trick-or-treaters i think we had 500 last jam no way shut up yeah like see we have nothing like it's like a thing we have nothing like and there's another one there's another one like up the street our neighborhood take a hot spot for it because people people go big what about your neighborhood my parents always wanted to have more trick-or-treaters and i but i think what you said was like your houses were far apart yes like i my neighborhood is also like let's call it seven minutes outside of downtown and the houses are right next to each other and i think that that is like a huge part of why your neighborhood is the way it is and like why my neighborhood is the way it was is like you're just all up in each other's business all the time you don't have a choice and like we would we would do these party not part like my neighbors would host the party but our house is right there and all the kids are coming through and all the parents are hanging out at my neighbor's house eating Krispy Kreme donuts and drinking Baileys.
Read the full transcript
36:27Oh! Eating Krispy Kreme donuts and drinking Baileys. I like that. Yeah. Yeah. Oh my gosh. We have to do, we have to boo. We have to boo people. I'm not familiar. No idea what you're talking about. Like boo baskets? is that it oh i am familiar we've got to start the booing on our street okay i will do this refresh my memory on this you get the baskets and you say you've been booed now you you go boo somebody else okay we'll start the booing we'll boo our neighbors okay but we need to like actually do it so and i will sunday let's do it sunday well when's the first day of october um today's the 25th thursday i believe okay that's when we will boo okay we will boo then okay big time happening um my favorite halloween costume that i remember is it was like the blow-up witch sydney and i were both that and we had the ventilator inside and we blew up and we were massive wow it was awesome also i was a pink lady one year and that was really fun what anybody else do they have halloween canada yes we do halloween canada is definitely a thing.
37:34We do not miss the mark on that one. And what's your favorite Halloween costume you remember? I'm thinking of this like one Halloween where we're in these ridiculous pink jackets when we were these like race car drivers but that didn't make any sense. I thought Harrison was going to say he was a pink lady. I thought he was going to say he was a greaser. I was a pink lady once in high school as well. Really? Yeah. It's an easy costume. I don't have anything good. I think we're talking about Halloween too early. I completely agree. Sorry. Very excited for fall, I guess. All right. McDonald's is leaning in.
38:08We didn't talk about this in programming. We did not. And I don't know if you guys have anything to say on it. Okay. Tell the class. Harrison, I don't know if you saw this because it came from McDonald's financial reporting yesterday that their next big opportunity is GLP-1 users. And I just thought that that just sounds like the biggest oxymoron in the world. Yeah, McDonald's exec says GLP-1 boom is an opportunity. And apparently it is. Apparently 84 % of people that are on a GLP-1 still go to McDonald's. And they are bringing back grilled chicken and, you know, other things of that sort. And I just was like, Filet-O-Fish?
38:52Yeah, they eat the Filet-O-Fish, the chicken nuggets. It just was really interesting. and I'm just... It's not like the new menu items are going to show up January 1st. This is a long-term strategy and we're giving some visibility to how the menu could evolve over time.
39:11I wish I'd looked at this a little more because McDonald's is in my periphery and to-do list is to better understand what's going on. So I'm going to need you to fact check me as I talk here. I think the McDonald's stock has been getting hammered. Okay. Okay. And so do you want me to pull it up or do you want to pull it up? Jules is pulling it up. McDonald's stock is down. It's trading around$236, which is roughly 30 % below where they were in March of 2026. Okay. It is their near lowest level since 2022. Okay. And so they're very much feel like it is in a phase of they, you know, have committed to these new digital menus.
40:01That experience, I think, has been very mixed. And it feels like there's a bit of an identity crisis going on. And I think it's kind of like all eyes on McDonald's or are they going to be able to figure it out? The, you know, when we would go to McDonald's growing up, like value felt like it was the biggest driver of the menu that just just not feel like the case anymore the prices seem very out of whack so also mcdonald's used to be fun i agree and and like play pens and have you seen the thing i think they're calling it oh i forget what they're calling it but just like they'll show a mcdonald's in 1999 versus a mcdonald's in 2019 and it's like grayscale now essentially yeah it's depressing it used to be such a happy joyous place to go the golden arches with Ronald.
40:51Yeah. So, yeah, like, I don't really have a lot to say other than it sounds like our favorite restaurant growing up is very much trying to find their new identity. Yeah. And I'm just saying, like, I just don't think that their identity... I'm feeling at odds between them being the restaurant for JLP1 users. I think that pivot is going to be tough. I think that I agree. I think that the opportunity for them lays in fun, tasting. Family. Yeah. Family. Family, tasty, well-priced food. They. And it seems that they're going away from that. What McDonald's did better than anybody else on the market was the kids meal.
41:37The happy meal. The happy meal. Like they, that, if that wasn't their claim to fame, I don't know what was. And like to then go from the happy meal when I'm sure the stock price was soaring to now being like GLP ones. That's going to be our next thing. Doesn't seem so. But it's like one of those things where if they're going to commit to the pivot or the repositioning, like you got to go all in. If they're dipping their toe in it and it's confusing to the consumer, this isn't going to work out well. July 2nd, because my birthday was on July 1st, but I couldn't get my permit on January 1st because it was New Year's Day.
42:12So I had to get my learner's permit on January 2nd. So I had to get my license on July 2nd. and the first place I went was to the McDonald's drive-thru because I think that's the first place I went. No way. Look at us. Do you think we were always meant to be? Also, for my 16th birthday, my surprise trip so Sydney and I, my best friend, our mom surprised us on a trip and they told us to Vancouver. They told us to pack our bags and they were like, you guys are going on a birthday sweet 16 trip. We're so excited. We're like packed for the Bahamas. No, we're like, is it the bahamas do you think we're going to cabo like what's it gonna be and we get there and we're like vancouver here we are no it was awesome of the canooks we had so much fun so much fun i remember the totem pulse okay that is a great comment to get from the listener though is where is the first place they went when they got their license and i think that our generation i can't we can't buy them a gift card i think there's gonna be an overwhelming amount of mcdonald's Um, McDonald's.
43:17Ah, the, getting your license, like, it is the best day. It's one of the best days. Like, to have that freedom to get in the car. Did you guys ever sneak your car out? No. P's a yes. Jules is absolutely not me. I had a friend Sam who would do it. I did it one time. How did you sneak your car out, though? My parents were gone. Oh. So I didn't have to sneak my car out. I was just, like, deathly afraid to drive it without a, like, because you always thought if you got pulled over. Without a license? I mean, I had my permit. I had one friend who did it. I did it one time. I went to Walgreens one time.
43:47Oh my God. No, I would never. He went to London Drugs. He picked up a CD. Wow. You never did it? I never did it. I am - That feels really bad. Here may be the most surprising thing about me. Like, I am a true rule follower. Like, I don't break the rules. If there are laws, I follow the laws. My friend and I just talked about this at dinner because my friend was like, oh, why don't you have Ginny certified as a - emotional support dog so she can go on the plane for free i'm like because she's not what do you mean correct and she's like you just have to pay the for the fee to do it and you can sign yourself i was like well she what what happens when she provides zero support this is my thing for emotional support animals okay some are truly emotional support animals but most most of my friends that have they're not so it's kind of ruined emotional support and just like discount Yeah, like discounts, discounts that ones then the people that actually need it.
44:45Okay. As a non dog owner, I feel like I can't talk about this, but I feel like there's a lot going on here and I feel like this is going to spark a lot of debate. So I'd love you to talk a little more about this, Jules. Well, I guess it poses the question. Should you be able to make non-emotional support animals, you know, an emotional support animal so they can fly or go into restaurants? And I think you can't. I actually think that they banned emotional support. I think they have to be true service animals to fly. But my friend has made her dog a true service animal. And it flies for free and sits on her lap.
45:21And do they have to go through training to become a service animal? No. She was like, you'd pay$500 and you can sign it yourself and say that you did the training. And I said, oh, my God. And it's the same thing in hotels. If you do this, you can bring your dog to a hotel, any hotel. even dogs that don't let hotels there so like for like hotels that don't let dogs alex like one of our friends her dogs are both trained service animals like but those are real actually real service animals and can be brought on the plane yeah it's hurt yeah hers are real service yeah but no i do not agree that i i just think that's wrong i would rather pay 100 dollars both ways stirring my dog put her under my seat both ways they're not making an an easy decision.
46:04It's insane. That is actually insane. I do think maybe if they lowered the cost of that, then we would have less faux service animals. Maybe, but they're trying. I feel like we have a faux service animal epidemic. No, we do. We do. And it's just like, rules apply to you. But as a non-dog owner, I feel like I'm not allowed to comment on it. No, I'm either. You're a member of society and there are rules in society and we follow them. Thank you. We follow the rules. Thank you, Jules. I will follow most, but I do not follow some. You have way more leniency on the rules than I do. 100%. It is like - But it's a - You're an 80 % rule follower.
46:43Yes. I'm a 100 % rule follower. But it's a sticky space to get in to be a 100 % rule follower. Because sometimes rules need to be broken in order to get places. Like sometimes you have to say, okay, hold on. How important is this rule or is this just a rule somebody made? I follow the law. Me too. The rules. I'm a law follower Rules I'm down to push I'm a manner stickler though You are a manner stickler I have my areas What about returning a shopping cart? Jewels They need to go back And I will return somebody else's as well That's like the number one Because they can cause problems They can hit other people's cars 100 % have to And littering too If you don't pick it up Somebody has to that's my big thing pick your trash up because if you don't pick it up then somebody's gonna have to come behind you and pick it up so i'm all for all that stuff yeah you don't cut in line but you know if there's no u-turn i you know if it's safe i'm fine with it i'm fine with the u-turn i'll allow that all right do you have anything else on the docket i would never run a red light under any circumstance what have you felt unsafe that's the only time i would oh hell yeah if i I feel unsafe.
48:00Will Rowe. If someone started like approaching my car, I'd be like, okay. Yeah, yeah. Very much so. But it has to be explainable. I can explain that. Yeah. You know. Yeah. I have something. Yes, Jules. I got the follow up on all the left hand stuff. Yes, I'd love to hear the follow up. So the official when, when is handedness, that's what they call it, handedness. Okay. Developed before birth. Fetuses show a clear hand preference in the world. No way. So it's already been decided. According to NIH-funded research. Okay. That's the first thing for you guys. What? So Bubber knows. So you're telling me the fetuses already know if they're going to be left or right-handed.
48:38Yes. In the womb. Yeah, they're showing preferences. How about that? The next thing was consequences of switching, which I started to get into, and I said this stutter thing, and that was accurate. it says that the documented consequences of trying to force your left-handed kid to be a right-handed person is higher rates of stuttering psychological distress hand-eye coordination commute confusion and experts universally oppose to trying to make your kid right-handed and what's what's the source on that that is john hopkins university that's a good one so that is very that is a very very very good thing to know i'm out i mean don't let them do their thing yes but i i see how easily as a parent, you could think like, you know what?
49:18Life's a little easier as a right-handed kid and you're just nudging your kid away, like nudging your kid to kind of use more right than left. And it's like to know that, hey, there's reputable organizations like John Hopkins University that is pointing to significant negative effects and that can cause, that's very good to know. But if you're going to develop a stutter from something like and lack or effects on your hand-eye coordination, that really tells you it's doing something to your brain that's unnatural yeah totally totally they're saying like you can force it to happen but your brain is never going to be rewired so like it it's like it's always going to be at odds and then the thing that i thought the most interesting this actually came from a comment of like why people try to do it of course there's like the physical things of like maybe a desk or like the writing thing that you were talking about harrison but apparently left has always been linked to evil and right has always been linked to good for centuries left-handed people were accused of being witches, cursed, and in league with dark forces.
50:18What? The Latin word for left is, the definition is sinister. And then they said today it's still baked into how we talk. Like a right hand man, the right thing to do. Left field, two left feet. Gauche is the French word for left. This is groundbreaking. So it's societal. Two left feet. Yeah. And the right thing to do. And we're saying two left feet equals bad because people have always associated left with bad. Right, like why are you walking like you have two left feet? Yeah. Are you kidding me? Yeah. No, I'm not kidding you, actually. Look at that. So, yeah, evil. Huh. Devil. That's what it said.
50:55I'm shocked. I'm actually shocked. You know, it's funny. In volleyball, being left-handed was a good thing. It was an anomaly. So a point for the lefties. That is interesting. I thought, yeah, someone, that came from the comments. I looked into it a little more. I'll tell you this about Bubber. I watched her the other day because I was like, well, what hand is she? She was coloring with both hands at the same time. So we might have an ambidextrous gal on our - That's our bubber. Okay. Should we do - Do we have anything else on the docket? We have a couple things on the docket. Do you want to do the interesting New York Times story about the most popular Uber Eats delivery restaurant in the world?
51:33Yes, I would love to. Okay. so the most the most popular uber eats delivery restaurant in the world is in houston texas and it's in a strip mall and it's an indian restaurant some of the drivers only deliver from there yeah that's crazy no i i need you to share there's some more details there that i think are really important to share well i gotta load x okay um dang i hate this they serve 4 000 guests a day Yeah. And then in terms of the cuisine rankings - There's another 1 ,600 or so takeout and delivery orders. It is not - Indian food is not one of the top three ranked cuisines in Houston. Yeah.
52:14So - Should we go? I was thinking like, how do we get this? Because I love Indian food. Here's what I love about this. One, we need to go. We need to try it. Can they door dash? But two, what I love about this is it shows if you put your head down and create a great product, you can build an awesome business. Build it, they will come. You don't need to be in the biggest category. You don't need to be in the most non-competitive sector. This restaurant is playing in a very crowded category. There's a lot of restaurants and a lot of restaurants doing delivery. They're not playing in the biggest part of delivery, but they're creating something that people obviously love and they've optimized their supply chain and business around it and they're crushing it.
53:04It had me happy to put a smile on my face when I read this. I have a similar direction, but different direction. I think one thing Austin has taught me is that there are some great restaurants and strip malls. I agree, Jules. There's this dumpling place, 100 % the best dumplings I've ever had. our sushi restaurant that we love i can't think of the name isn't a strip mall like do not have to go to the best restaurant in austin to get the best food in austin well i think that there's something to be said a lot of times for the vibe that comes like a lot of times i love a restaurant that's in a strip mall because they're focused on food not so much on like they are just focused on food type people and i like that but they also have good vibes where it can struggle like for whatever reason i i can i can love a strip mall restaurant what i and i can turn that into an experience but what i do struggle with a little more is like when you have the new age complex like the new development build and like the restaurant that goes in there i feel like those just they lack character and soul too often yeah that's like a trip all ones have a lot of that's a transactional eating experience for me dunk on mueller yes like i called mueller p.e land private equity land yes it's like a swish dental modern animal like and the core power like and the restaurants that go alongside that it's it's like p.e disneyland yeah like i love lauro on lamar yeah love laura lamar but like the lauro i pretend that the lauro in the domain doesn't exist yeah yeah i pretend it doesn't exist right although you did suggest we eat there the other day and you shut it down i was like absolutely not and when you shut it down i was like you're totally i'm i'm totally on board with this that's not the experience that i want ima i love abba and ima i don't need to go to ima in the domain what are you saying they open a new abba oh oh okay okay okay i got it yeah so the other thing that reminds me of this restaurant here a bit is okay so i i saw this tiktok and it's called the ergodic theory yes that's how it's pronounced so it was this surgeon and he was like i'm gonna give you a life lesson in one tiktok here and it's about this ergodic theory which is basically if you keep trying your odds of never finding success begin to approach close to zero so shots on net shots on net if you're not shooting then you're then you're what's the saying if you're not if you're not if you're not trying are you talking about like you're dying something like that well okay i guess like you're never gonna get there if you don't try if you're not even trying then then your odds are zero if at first you don't succeed try try try again yeah well kind of that but more so if you're not even shooting the ball you've got zero chance that it goes in he's saying the complete opposite of this, which is if you shoot so many, your odds of it not going in begin to approach zero.
55:58So you don't shoot at all. You got no chance, but you shoot a lot. Your chance has actually increased so much that it's almost 99%. The power of trying, the power of staying in the game, the power of shots are not. Now, quality of the shot matters a lot, right? You'll get there a heck of a lot faster if you have a 50 % chance of it working versus a 5 % chance of it working. So you want to focus on quality as well. But he also says you got to rewire your brain too to say, I'm just going to keep shooting and they're going to be quality shots and I'm going to keep going and I'm not going to stop.
56:29And then your brain eventually will also rewire and say, we're just, obviously we're trying. How are we trying? Very nice. Yeah, so I thought that was a good little message from a surgeon. And if anybody finds that TikTok, will you send it to me? Because I wish I would have saved it. I took notes on it though. um all right we've got the dear media panel tomorrow it's sold out i'm gonna go actually look for my outfit today and i'm gonna do color blocking which i'm very excited about because god forbid i ordered something like i don't know why i didn't just press order but i'm gonna go to the domain and get i don't know like i don't know what color i'm gonna wear because it's difficult we're kind of in this like season also though they did send the background is pink if you saw that i didn't see it oh they emailed you it's pink okay so if that changes your colors in any way which what's complimentary to pink i was just gonna say green but it is great no green is purple are we bringing bubber but we're coming um well it is after nap time and why are you not inviting rocket man no bubber can't come do you know why dada that's what you would hear mama upies like we can't do that to her she won't understand that like we're on stage and she doesn't want to sit on the panel with us no okay green provides a high contrast complimentary complimentary okay i love the color green green blues neutrals okay thinking like light green top dark green bottoms like i love the same shit is that is that color blocking though it's color blocking but monochrome color blocking kind of my vibe yeah It's a blend of the two things we talked about.
58:13Okay, I'll go look. I'll go browse. Okay. I want to start Monday off with a new AI update, or should we do our AI update now? Do it now, because don't save things. Okay. So Meta launched their AI tool, Muse. Muse. Have you seen this? Nope. They're putting on a master class on how to launch a product. Okay. Okay. So they bought this company called Scale AI. and a big part of them buying scale AI, and they paid a lot of money for this, billions and billions of dollars, Jules will pull up the exact amount, was their CEO, a guy named Alexander Wang. And so they made Alexander Wang the head of AI, I think is maybe it's chief AI officer.
59:02$14 billion. $14 billion they paid for this. my entire Twitter is Muse memes coordinated by Alexander Wayne to be a social media company going viral on another social media company on another social media company's platform. Like that speaks to the power of how effective your marketing campaign is. So, um, Muse off to an incredible start feedback very good uh then the last piece of it the way that the facebook execs are dressing 10 out of 10 i'm not sure if you've seen this have you seen this these outfits that they wore at the presentation yeah i'm pretty sure you have that shirt does he that's why i have alexander wang's keynote outfit i have his camo crocs i have his camo shirt and i have very similar pants and i just love how is this in the notion you have steve jobs over here yeah and you have facebook that they're just letting their personality speak for themselves i i and zuck wait steve jobs was letting his personality speak because he wore the same thing every day and that tells you a lot about his personality i agree with that fine fine fine these guys look great i agree yeah yeah okay why are you smirking i'm not okay okay that's all i got.

This week on Two Parents & A Podcast, happy Friday!! We shared a bit about our street this week on socials, and the comments had one big request: "please dig deep on the community y'all have created on the pod." So hi! We get into when it all started, the little ways everyone shows up for each other.. plus the couples trip we just booked with THE neighbors (who we realized we've somehow never hung out with 1:1..) AND, if you want one place to start with YOUR street: host the street-wide barbecue.
Before all that: do you remember the first time your parents embarrassed you in public?? Harrison has a convertible pickup memory, Alex genuinely cannot think of one, and all Jules could come up with was that Nori (Minich) wore a lot of brown LOL.
Then Jules is back from New York with a story we're still processing: she caught her pilot LYING. Pilots need a full 8 hours of rest, hers fudged his timesheet, and someone caught it because the math didn't math. Rules are rules!! (No public shaming.. but a strongly worded DM is coming lol)
On the home front: we are officially a couple who "padels" together, we're going BIG on Halloween because Tate APPROVED the skeletons, and Rocky is giving us 5 to 6 hour stretches since starting the nanny share. There's something to babies being busy and around other babies!!
Plus our coffee GIVEBACK winner is announced (s/o Jetta.. enjoy Hattie's Coffee House in Whitestown, Indiana!!) and the next giveback is live: comment your favorite date night idea and we're treating one of you to it.
Rapid fire: McDonald's says GLP-1 users are their next big opportunity?!, where's the first place you drove when you got your license, the big one: are you a rule follower or a rule breaker?!, handedness is decided in the WOMB?!, the most popular Uber Eats restaurant in America, ergodic theory, and Harrison's AI update: Meta launched Muse (and the rollout is a masterclass).
Come see us at Dear Media by Day TOMORROW!! Sold out, but if you have a ticket: we can't wait!!
Hope everyone has a great weekend :-) LOVE YOU GUYS!
