In short

A mix of parenting and culture talk—false fire alarms at home, Father’s Day and World Cup “stay or leave for childbirth” debate, Instagram follower rankings, flying with toddlers, and how to handle kid birthday parties and pool safety.

Guests

No named guests appear in the transcript; it’s hosted by “two parents” (Alex and Jules).

Guest backgrounds

Not applicable (hosts are the parents discussing their own experiences; no external guest bios provided).

Key claims

  • ChatGPT/AI can increase ER visits by prompting people to seek care.
  • For World Cup players, the hosts argue the father should stay for the tournament (they cite global/national stakes and “missing one game”).
  • Birthday parties can become overwhelming (they estimate many parties per year).
  • Pool parties require dedicated pool supervision/lifeguard; “drop-off” without active adult pool duty is unsafe.

Notable examples

  • Their home fire alarm triggered multiple times at ~3 a.m.; they dismantled the system and changed security providers.
  • World Cup marketing: one host bought a jersey after seeing ads; they also discuss a goalie with ~15.6M Instagram followers.
  • Pool party scenario: parents discouraged staying, but no adults watched kids in the pool (ages 8–12).

Okay. Because you so kindly haven't asked. Guess what happened to us last night? Do you know? I did read Long Night 3 fire alarms. Four. Four. We have a fire alarm in our house. Like an actual fire alarm that rings and flashes the equivalent of what?

1:35Like an apartment fire alarm? Yes. Louder. But yes, but it is like you live in an apartment. I guess an apartment level fire alarm in our house. Yeah, that's crazy. It was ripping. but the first time okay so it went off at three for the first time well hold on let's let's just like start can we let me at least bring us in here welcome back to another episode of two parents in a podcast okay here's what happened to us last night so it was three well let me just give you my whole night this happened postpartum with take two about a month a month and a half in i got raging heartburn and acid reflex and I got it last night like I felt like my throat and my heart and my back were on fire chat GBT was like you need to go to the ER and I was like you're being dramatic like I don't need to go to the ER but it was saying because the pain hasn't gotten worse since we or the pain hasn't gotten better since we started chatted chatting I do think you should go to the ER and I'm like this isn't helpful I wonder how many people I wonder last night it to go to the ER?

2:40Yes, I wonder. I was asleep, sorry. But I wonder if ER visits are up because of ChatGBT. They must be. Because people are like, and then they come in and they say, Chat told me to come. Like it made me so paranoid. One thing I saw is that legal cases are way up because people like are using ChatGBT to tell them that they're right essentially and they're bringing the cases to court. They think they have a case. So I'm sure the hospital thing is is also accurate and yeah i think it probably is because i was like i have obviously classic heartburn and acid reflux probably the worst i've ever had it but this is obviously a classic case of that and i'm just asking chat which medicine i should doordash and it's like checking back in on me and my symptoms and it's like this isn't normal this is the case for especially since your postpartum you should go to the er could be something erupting in your system and i'm like oof and that was giving me like the placebo that it was so much worse than it was.

3:35Anyways. You could have been that bad because you didn't wake me up. Well, I... I feel like you wake me up whenever there's something kind of wrong. Well, did you not notice I slept upright all night? Well, I did like a... I woke up at like 1230 and watched you upright and I thought like you were like upset about something. Oh, yeah. And so I was like, oh my God, are you okay? I have some heartburn. So, you know, Thank you for, I guess, yeah, I don't know. There's just nothing you could do. You didn't make it seem like an event. Yeah, well, it was an on event, and it hurt so bad that I had to distract myself, so I actually purposely was scrolling Instagram.

4:13Okay. Like, I was, like, trying to disassociate from my body. Anyways, the door dasher got there at, like, 1230, 1245. I was, I think I took way more than you're allowed to take a Pepto-Bismol. It helped a little. And then I was able to sleep. And then at three, this fire alarm, and it starts saying, fire, baby's room. Yeah, because we have, like, you know, we installed, like, the nicest thing you can get. So our rooms are labeled. So we hear the fire alarm go off, but we weren't sure it was the fire alarm or if it was our real alarm because you're, like, a little disoriented. So Harrison runs down the stairs, and I go into Tate's room, and I start rubbing her back.

4:54and I'm just like it's okay because like I just was like our alarm obviously like got something's going off but like it's obviously fine and when I get into Tate's room it says fire baby's room please evacuate it says fire smoke baby's room fire alarm but whatever something baby's room please evacuate so I'm like what the fuck so I'm like Tate we're getting up so I get her up and I just like run down the stairs and I'm like are we okay and Harrison's like yes something is glitched in the system because he's on the phone with them now so something in our system had glitched. Well, my heart was beating out of my chest.

5:25Tate's heart was beating out of her chest. And so then we spend 30 minutes. Rocky Bears was 9-9. Rocky Bears was, he slept. He was like so 9-9. I'm good for him. He sleeps. That's where they get the term sleeps like a baby. So then, you know, we get everybody back to sleep. Tate goes back to sleep. We were like, man, that was crazy. All of our heart rates calmed back down. And then it goes off again. I was like, are you kidding me? I couldn't believe it. I have a hilarious dad moment in it. Then it went off two more times. What was your hilarious dad moment? Well, the first time it went off, and it's full-blown just like pandemonium in the house.

6:06Yeah, what is it? Were there not lights flashing, or am I making that up? I don't know. It felt like the world was ending. And it's the dad's job to go downstairs and investigate. Well, you're so cute, though. Right when it happened, I got it. I got it. Whatever it is, I got it. Did I say that? I don't remember that. Yeah, it was so cute. Oh, I totally don't remember that. But like growing up, like it was always your dad that would go down and deal with this stuff. Yes. No, no, no. Now I got to do it. Yeah, now you're the dad. Isn't that funny? Yeah. So then the girl, we called him again. But it was just, what was clear like after the 30 seconds had kind of gone by?

6:45It's like nothing in the house smelled. Like there was, to me, it was very clear there wasn't a fire happening. yeah we went around everywhere and like checked and then by the third time we call her back we're like the fire alarm keeps going off and we're like hard or we're Wi-Fi'd into some system like everything's in our I don't even know how it works but anyways the girl we're calling she's like I can't tell what it is and we're like we don't want it to go off again so what do we do she's like well you have to take the batteries out that's your only option well we're like We have 10-foot ceilings.

7:20We have the ladder in there, but we don't have a really tall. We're just trying to get the batteries out. And this is not like 4, 4.30 in the morning. I wanted to get a broom or a baseball bat and just deal with it today. I was so mad. And you talking about it, you were so calm. You spent the whole time calming me. I was ready to take a baseball bat today. You kept calling the girl and being like, we have two under two? Two kids under two. Turn it off. Get the fire alarm off. And the girl's like, I can't dismantle it. He's like, we'll take our chances until 6 a.m. when we all get up. It's 4 a.m.

7:56Turn it off. But they couldn't, like, the craziest and most frustrating part of it. So we take the batteries out. It's like, beep. And it's. Yeah. That's what I was going to ask. Starts beeping. So I had to go downstairs, get a screwdriver, and unscrew the system from the wall and pull out the wires. We had to dismantle the whole system. They're coming back today. They're going to remantle it. But we're officially changing our security provider. Okay. Yeah. It was the way that this, you got to have like the systems in place where if you have a second false alarm that they have the ability to pause the system for the night.

8:36And they're not making their users get screwdrivers and spend, you know, 30 minutes dismantling your freaking system. And like that was the problem. is like the kids were like the two kids. Right. And Bubba was just like, oh, she was so confused. She didn't cry. She was just like so confused and wouldn't be put down. Of course not. I got her heart rate up. My heart rate was up. My heart rate was beating out of my chest. Oh, and I had the heartburn thing, so I was already sleeping upright. And I was just like, this is not a good night. Three wake-ups, 4 a.m. when it went off the second time I was like oh my gosh um but you know what such is life so great but it is really funny that you are now you are now you used to be able to lay in bed while your dad solved it now you're the dad you've heard me say it but I'll say it again you guys skims is always changing the game with their intimates everything they come out with is truly the best I'm wearing their bra right now they make the stretchiest underwear fabric then they created the cutest push-up bra and now they've done it again with their new everyday cotton fabric.

9:46You guys know I'm two months postpartum right now and comfort is everything. Cotton is basically all I want against my skin these days and I think skims must have read my mind because I'd just been thinking about replacing a bunch of my underwears and a bunch of my bras with cotton pieces then everyday cotton dropped and it was exactly what I had been looking for. My absolute favorite thing right now is the everyday cotton ultimate bra. That's what I'm wearing right now. It has the same roundness and iconic lift as the ultimate bra, but it feels even better in the cotton fabric, especially under a t-shirt or a tank top.

10:18I've been wearing it almost every day, and trust me, I've put this bra to the test. It's the one. You guys got to get in on the goods. I say this all the time about Skims. There's nothing better than good bra and underwear, especially with summer coming up. So shop everyday cotton and all of my favorite bras and underwear at skims.com. And after you place your order, be sure to let them know we sent you select podcast in the survey and be sure to select our show in the drop down menu that follows. Speaking of which, happy late Father's Day. Thank you. We fried chicken last night, you guys. I wonder if that's part of my heartburn.

10:53You didn't think you so-so? It was so good. I thought you guys did a phenomenal job. So we went over to the neighbors and we had some other neighbors on the block over and we fried the chicken and we had Father's Day and it was so great. I loved the barbecue we did. I love the concept of hosting. It was in my in the Substack newsletter, the last minute barbecue, which we ended up doing. I love that. The frying chicken. One, it is a two person job. Yeah, that's the first thing. Like cooking this oil on the open fire, like it is very, very, very, very, very. You need to be attentive or it can become dangerous very fast.

11:39The biggest problem was the girls, Tate and Winnie, weren't allowed to be outside with you guys. And they want to be part of the cooking. Yeah. So it was just, it was a lot. I bought the wrong chicken. I'm a little upset with myself. The chicken I bought was too big. I honestly thought it was one of the better meals you've made. So... It wasn't enough seasoning in the flour. I loved it. Anyways, we had great company. We had a great conversation. And so what we're going to do is what we were doing last night. Jules, you're going to guess. So we were looking up. Who do you think are the top nine?

12:15Did she get that facial reaction that she just did? The top 10 most followed people on Instagram. I screenshotted it. Top five. No, we're doing the 10. Selena Gomez. Number three. Well, okay. I know some of these. Instagram is first, so these numbers are like... Why did you just tell her? Well, because you're not going to get that. What? That's the... Okay, let's just do a game, and then the trickiest part of the game, let's just ruin. That was crazy. Well, Selena Gomez is actually four, and I know you thought she was three, but she's the third most followed human.

12:53And Cristiano Ronaldo... Is? More than Selena Gomez. Yeah. And that's where you lost me. Like, I just know those two. Okay. Is it a Kardashian? So there's one on here that I think is impossible to get. Mm-mm. Because I think this guy's very well known for having a massive social media following. Not Kevin Hart, but he's the opposite of Kevin Hart. I don't know. In a lot of different ways. The Rock? yes oh yeah i wouldn't have gotten that he's above kim kardashian oh wow yeah so okay now here's here's here let me try and let me try and have you guess them with clues okay okay this is a good way to do it okay number one she's got ronaldo number one is ronaldo number two is a uh the version of ronaldo that is better at the sport but less commercial than him

14:01you really lost me my hair today is i was gonna say messy and i didn't i couldn't believe it was messy because he he's so not commercial but that is how much people love soccer yeah okay so three we have selena gomez four we have the rock no okay what's the hint for four let me see

14:29so you guys were doing this at father's day okay okay um for you guess the family already and it's the most popular one kim kylie oh whoops yeah then the rock then is oh let me see if this is who i want this is perfect this is what i was going for an irrefutably worse taylor swift the worst version of Taylor Swift like if Taylor's 1A this lady is the clear 1B I couldn't believe she had more followers than her yeah Taylor Swift's not on this list yeah a worse version of Taylor Swift I need you to guess this okay give her another hint like what does this person do wasn't she in an animated movie Morphin's oh really?

15:21no Wait, repeat that to be food in here She says she might be a more famous actress than musician Which I refute But she is in something recently Oh Jules Yes No, I know what it is Yeah Yeah Wicked Oh, Ariana Grande Yeah Sorry, she's irrelevant to me Is that not a creep? To the Arianaators In what world is Ariana Grande bigger than Taylor Swift on Instagram? The Arianaators They love her Oh, am I going to get in trouble now? No I don't think. No. Then you've got Kim, and then we've got Chloe. Okay. Yeah, I was never going to get to Ariana Grande. I was having a hard time getting to The Rock last night.

16:04I was like, oh. The Rock is like sneaky, one of the highest grossing actors that's around. Like when he goes into a movie, it crushes the box office. Speaking of the box office. Okay, yeah, Toy Story 5. Toy Story 5. You guys seeing it? that is a yes Jules is no P's not on camera so you're getting a yes are you gonna see it Alex? I would love to I'm gonna realistically I'm gonna watch it at home are we gonna bring Bubber? Bubber just like isn't sitting through a movie right now yeah she'd get five minutes of it yeah so what's the deal with it though? but I do think this is a good foray into we are taking a flight today it's our first flight ever with two under two we are bringing for the first time ever an official screen for Tate so that way she can watch a show

17:03because we just think that her energy levels are so high that it will be the only way to not have her disrupt the whole plane will it work we don't know we will report back but she doesn't watch screens um we still don't do screens with her but we but one actually one day she was sick remember that day where she didn't feel good yep and we like we were like do you want to watch the lion king and we put it on and she she watched it for a little bit um but i think yeah i'm really proud of us for making it this far but yeah i think on this flight we're gonna need to see if she will watch maybe even 20 minutes of a screen if she can even hold the screen like how this all goes we'll see we'll report back to you guys but what are you gonna put on lion king i don't know um i don't know frozen like she likes songs yeah i think frozen is probably gonna be it yeah so we're gonna attempt that but what was your point with uh toy story just saying like it's pretty cool that number five still has value like we're we're at toy story five story five second highest grossing pixar movie of all time for their opening weekend so people are showing up people are seeing it i think that speaks to like people want to go to the theaters we just don't give them enough of a reason to go to the theaters and um yeah i'd love to watch toy story one with bobber maybe we'll try toy story one with her that would be really cute yeah see if she likes that so in here too jules put in this um like people were talking about uh father's day article or father's day moments and it was like very like don't tell mom and i was reading some of them this morning and one of the dads there was a movie that that you know how they used to have those movies that come out right at like midnight and then there's like a 2 a.m showing yeah one of the kids really wanted to see some movie that came out and they were like no because he had a test the next morning and then his dad woke him up like 11 at night and was like i got the tickets let's go and they went that's very fun isn't that cute that's very it's a lot of stories like that should we talk about the surprise gift that you got me what did i get you world cup tickets

19:27what did you get them did you buy world cup tickets oh I don't know I think there's a big trend like of dads getting surprised with World Cup tickets it's a big thing going on and they're buying it themselves though funny but no oh kids surprising their dads that was like the big takeaway Father's Day like internet moment was dads getting surprised gifted World Cup tickets that's amazing where was I on this trend Harrison got a wedding ring that was his Father's Day gift and a hat a monogrammed hat because we call ourselves yeah it's cute save it we call Tate and Rocky Rocky Bears and Tatey Bears so I got him a hat monogram that said dadder bears which I thought was really cute um so my story about H and we talked about this a little on the podcast but a very dad thing that you did was the time that I sent you to dance class and instead you went swimming that was very cute it was a classic like dad move i love the okay there was another one where a mom had put the whole family on a diet and like wanted them all to eat really healthy and one day the kid got home from the bus stop and there was like a dairy market right there and they went to the market because they saw their dad and they thought that their dad was going to be getting just like you know bread and milk and things but instead the guy was like the usual and he's like yeah and he got a chip box with like a giant hot dog and all that and he looked over at his kid and saw that he had been caught and was like make it too and they just like ate them together i think i just think that's really cute because you obviously can't be where i like these stories like you obviously can't be lying to your partner okay we obviously understand there's a line there but there's also a love there's lovely space for dad and mom both to be like don't tell your dad i bought you this you know you need another word for it yeah it's like very like it's a wink.

21:22Yeah, you need a word for that. For that. For those moments. Yeah, and it's always like the grandparents are the ones that are supposed to like give them the sugar. You know, like we said no sugar and then of course they get to have cookies over there, things like that. I ordered cookies from Tiny's Milk and Cookies. Yeah, was that Saturday? Actually, I had a big weekend of DoorDash in a lot of the moments you didn't know. number one of which I got caught by marketing. A marketing campaign officially worked for me. Okay, what was it? You know what I did at 11pm at night? What? On Friday night before Father's Day?

22:06Friday night or Saturday night? Saturday night. So the night before Father's Day. What I did? After just being inundated with ads. What? World Cup ads. Bought a jersey? I ordered McDonald's. What? Yeah. I had McDonald's come. You were asleep? Obviously. Yeah. I went downstairs. What did you get? I had a Big Mac, a McChicken, and a Diet Coke. At 11 p.m. you had a Diet Coke? Yeah. He can do that. And he will still sleep. Wow. I know. And I slept like a baby. And I was like, you know why I'm going to do this? Why? It's going to be a little Father's Day treat for me. That is so cute. Yeah. Just me, my McDonald's, and some shows.

22:53So Big Mac and a McChicken. Yeah. No chicken nuggets, though. No. I went lighter than my normal order. Oh. I will say, like, they really didn't put a lot of sauce on the McChicken, which was heartbreaking. And they forgot the straw with the Diet Coke. Ooh. That's almost worse to me. And so it was great, but it didn't fully hit the expectations I wanted. Got to have a straw for the Diet Coke because you got to have it out of the McDonald's cup. Yeah. I totally agree with you on that. To not put the mayo on the McChicken was also, it was a very big mess. Did you put your own mayo on it? No, because it was just like I accepted it.

23:40And did you eat this in bed? No, I took it downstairs. That's so amazing of you. Yeah. And then did the, what happened with the trash? I just pounded it down and put it away. You didn't even notice. I didn't. It's not, you wouldn't leave it down there. Nope. For the spiders to get, would you? You would never do that. Okay, so we went to. So McDonald's World Cup marketing. Worked on you. Yeah, I'm very in, people are getting into the World Cup. I'm watching it happen. Especially now that the U.S. is looking very good. But people, people are into it. If that does not speak to the power of the eyeballs in this sport, I do not know what does. So I agree with that. And so let's sort of pivot here and talk about this. So Jeremy Doku could temporarily leave Belgium's World Cup camp to be present for the birth of his son.

27:08Okay. So World Cup player leaves the World Cup or is thinking about leaving the World Cup for the birth of his son. Yes. if I'm playing in the World Cup

27:21what would you want me to do? Okay I thought a lot about this and I at first so my initial gut instinct is like if you're playing in the World Cup I want you to go play in the World Cup I don't want you to come be present for the birth of our son and then but then I thought if you're playing in a golf tournament if you're playing in the Super Bowl I do want you to come be present and I couldn't figure out why that was and I started thinking about it But, like, nobody – like, the World Cup is a global thing, right? Nobody's like – and it's also – it's nation-based, whereas to me the Super Bowl is city-based.

28:04Wait, so you're standing by? Yeah. I want you to stay at the World Cup because, like, we want America to win. Like, that's our whole entire country. Those are, like, you know, for the ancestors. nobody's like do it for my Kansas City city like that's it's a city-based so I think something about it being global is more impactful for me the fact that it's not every year um that yeah so it's more I think that it's such a larger stage and it's such a larger meaning like you're doing it for the country I don't know I would want you to stay at the World Cup if you're playing in the World Cup but if you were playing in the Super Bowl or if you're playing Super Bowl's tough That's a big one.

28:44But if you're playing in a golf tournament like that time that Scott was the same, Scotty Scheffler went home for the birth, I think I would want you to come home. Okay. I'm checking something before this comes out of my mouth. The World Cup? Yeah. I need you to stay in the World Cup. And I'm going to tell our son over and over and over again, like your daddy wasn't there because he was in the World Cup. And your mom, this is the most important part. And your mom told him he had to stay and play. I'm very surprised by that answer. I'm saying you have to stay and play. I need you to stay and play.

29:12mom's got this dad's got that okay and and what country is this belgium belgium

29:23and and so okay what what i thought was interesting is is i was talking to a friend from the uk and what he said is that around 40 percent of births in the uk are c-section so they're highly planned and the whole process is typically very short okay um and so i'm sorry i'm sorry i'm sorry i'm sorry i'm sorry i'm just kind of pulling this up what it is in the u.s is what i'm looking for right now wow what do you think it is in the u.s

30:0530 yeah that's way higher than i would have thought no one in three scheduled c-sections so oh good question jules good good question it says 15 20 yeah i'm i'm i'm surprised that that's your take yeah but i want to make it very clear i this is how i would want it to go down i'm telling like if i if i explain to our kid hey when you were born like your mom was doing something unbelievable and incredible by birthing you while your dad was also doing something incredible and i said to him i want him to stay because if i say i want you to come to the birth like nothing comes before family i agree with that but an important part of our family story for me would be that you were in the world cup so i would be very proud of that did you see the bit of drama surrounding this situation no what was it there was a french journalist and i think she was since been fired if she yes a woman and she said you've sacrificed everything to go to the world cup and you're leaving just to cut an umbilical cord no to that no ma 'am i believe she was fired i think you gotta go back and then here's i think you got to go back sorry i'm in my silence on this i was thinking about it like you got to go back you're playing one game a week by the way so all chances are like you actually can get there and back make it work and get there and back but like you're missing like one game for the birth like you're not missing the whole tournament you're Missing one game is the absolute kind of like worst case in this.

31:50Like you can be with your wife for six days of the process. Like I think you got to go back. Good dad, as you should say that. That's what we want to hear from you. There was another guy that watched his wife give birth this weekend from the World Cup on FaceTime. They seem to be like live streaming on a screen of some sort. Like a fan? No, no. A defender from Norway. There are these two like birth stories have that. That's what consumed my feed this weekend. World Cup wise. He watched it. He watched it on FaceTime. You got to go back. So the option that's not happening is you're not watching it on FaceTime.

32:33You're either there or you're not there. And we're letting you know when the baby is born. I don't know about that. I just think like there's so much dough with these with like the country's got figure out a way to get him there and get him back i think they can just whip the plane yeah i think they can do it which and and actually there's the the um economic resources of the countries of the world cup are very very very different of course but belgium they can they can get you back norway they can get you back yeah they sure can so um anyways harrison correct answer on your part by saying that you would go back i love hearing that from you because there is no And listen, I want you there at the birth of every single one of our kids because I don't think I can do it without you.

33:19Yeah. Your response tripped me up. I was surprised. That was just my gut reaction. Trying to see what I was missing there. My gut reaction is just that, yeah, I would want you to be at the World Cup, and I think that would be part of the story. But I would want that to be entirely my call. And there's sometimes where I do things for you, right, where I'm like, no, you go. I can stay here with the kids. This would be for us. Like I would, I wouldn't, if I actually wanted you there at the birth, I would just say that. That's not a time where I would be like selfless. I would be selfish, but I'm actually down for you to, yeah, I'd want you to be at the World Company.

33:52That's cool. Yeah. Well, um. You're still coming home. Yeah. Okay. So we went to a. I was going to ask a question beforehand. Okay. On my social media band. Yeah. So. You popped up that Substack photo, which is ironic because in the Substack, we talked about how you were on a social media detox. Well, that was my question is does Substack count? Because I – do you think Substack counts? As social media? Yeah. Because it feels very productive. I'm a huge fan. I don't find I'm doing doom scrolling. I feel like I'm doing good productive rating. I'm loving it too. I'm loving what people are saying on there.

34:33Yeah. I don't know. If it feels productive, then sure. Well, where I think Substack is different – app on my phone where where I think it is different is on Instagram you get so many hits so fast photo photo photo story story story on sub stack I mean you have to stop and read at least four lines feels like like the good side of the internet yeah sub stack it's amazing I'm enjoying it as well how are you feeling about the article for this week I'm feeling excited about it I have some ideas Tuesdays are like typically my main writing day but yeah I've already written most of it. So I actually wrote two, but I need to beef them up.

35:16Okay. Yeah, I feel good about it. I like writing them. That's the main thing that's important to me is that I enjoy it. But then I also need to go and write some statuses, it appears. I'm trying to figure it out. I agree. I was doing a little research this weekend. In the feed. Yeah, I think you've got to get the feed posts going. It's kind of like threads in a way. yeah like you have to start doing that to get people to your page so I have to figure that part out yeah well that's the thing is like I'm not following anyone I'm just seeing what's on the main feed and and our feeds are very similar because you you sent me a screenshot and like I also had some of those same sitting on my feed so I think it's maybe those people are following the page and I just have common interest common value systems correct except um Yeah, common algorithms.

36:07Surprise Jules isn't on hockey. I love Jules and I to do like a personality test like that and see how we respectively came out. Probably more similar than you would think. I think very similar. Yeah, I think very similar. I do too. I think I would be the outlier of the three of us. All right, so we went to a birthday party this weekend. And number one, birthday parties are just fun. I know that everyone always says you're going to get birthday party exhaustion, right? With kids. We're not there yet. I still get the invite and I think this is so fun. Can't wait to go. Bubber's at the age now where she can play and interact with the kids.

36:47I can't wait for Bubber's second birthday. I got it. I got a call. Like this is a statement that is reflective of like, it's like weddings. Like the first couple of weddings you went to, they were so fun. I think it's, there's, we go to so few birthdays right now. I highly doubt we'll be thinking this in 12 months. Well, by the time she gets in school, okay, and then let's say you have 12 kids in your class, that's 12 birthday parties a year. And that's just in your class. Because I think the way they do it is like all the kids invite all the kids to the birthday party. Okay. Then you're not accounting for family, friends, you know, friends on your block, neighborhood friends.

37:29so you know that we're probably gonna go to 24 birthdays a year but then per kid so that means that if you're looking at 48 you have a birthday party every single weekend did you have 12 kids in your class where did that number come from there were 12 invited there was 12 at this birthday party yeah that was just no i i had 20 kids in my yeah me too yeah so that's 20 birthday parties 24ish yeah so the birthday parties are going to be and then like so some of the parents i was talking to on Saturday at the birthday party, they had come from two birthday parties that day. They had one at 10, they had one at noon, this one was at three.

38:04And so your Saturdays, I think, just become revolving around birthday parties, which is a really good way to like get the kid's energy out. But what I noticed when we pulled up was there was a mom going in and Harrison was like, oh, I love that we come to this together. And I'm like, oh, I always want to go to birthday parties with you and me. But I wonder if she had two kids and they had to divide and conquer on the birthday parties. Dad had one kid and they were going to birthday parties. She had the other and they were going to birthday parties. Yeah, where I'm so torn on this is like on one end, you want to make sure all the kids in the class are supported, right?

38:44And you're showing up and you're being a great community member. On the other end, like 48 birthdays a year, that's a lot of birthdays. your life becomes birthday parties. And I'm not a birthday guy. Like, I don't really think birthdays should be celebrated. For kids, they should. I mean, the joy it brings them is unbelievable. Yes. Yes, but I think that, like, we should find, I think they can find joy in other ways as well. I totally agree. But Bubber's birthday, when she is five years old, and we're like, Tate, it is your birthday. Like, the little girl across the street's already telling me about her birthday.

39:17She's telling me her birthday's coming up really soon. So I asked her mom, I was like, when's her birthday? She's like, October. I was like, okay, it's precious. It's so exciting. They're so excited about their birthday. You know, but like 48 birthdays a year? Yeah, I mean, no. That's your life. Yeah, it does. But that's why you got to make the birthday kind of fun for the parents. I think there's an art in that as well. Birthday parties that are fun. This birthday party on Saturday was so great because it was so fun for the kids, but it was so fun for the parents too. But, like, aren't all birthday parties kind of the same?

39:54Well, no. I think you have the ones at Chuck E. Cheese. Those are not fun to the parents, I don't think. I think those are the classic birthdays. A little less fun for the parents. This one on Saturday, they had, like, a very fun bounce house with, like, water in it. They had their pool open. She had Shake Shack. She had, you know, like, wine for the parents, beers for the moms and dads. And then, you know, pizza and cupcakes. It was just like very both. And it was at their house. And so it was just like a kid and parent party. It's really interesting because you would like just like to do that on a Saturday.

40:31Anyways. That was exactly my thought, Jules. I was like, oh, this is like what we'd be doing anyways. And like we love them. They're like our good, really good friends. Like it's just what we'd be doing. Plus some of his classmates. The wedding analogy was very good. I'm trying to be careful with my words. Okay. Why? It's a birthday party. because as I said before, on one end, I think it's really important that kids feel the love and they're supported on the other end. Like that's a lot of commitment. Well, we're not asking you to commit to 48 birthday parties on the podcast right now. We're just asking you to discuss the, so listen, there comes an age where you just drop off your kids and the parents leave.

41:08What age is that? 12, 10. I have no idea. I just know that there does become a point where you do have a birthday. Well, and then sometimes birthday parties become overnight birthday. I mean, there's a whole thing. There's all these, I mean, birthday parties. Okay. Do you remember your best birthday party? I remember two, one was at my, and I, when I tell you, I was so excited for, and I still remember it today, but I went to a place called Metro gymnastics. I think I went every Tuesday. I I did on a Saturday and you know we had the cupcakes and the pizza and then you everyone gets to run in the gym and you get to jump into the pit the ball the big foam pit with the foam blocks like I just remember thinking this is the greatest day of my life I can't believe I get to have my birthday party there very fun I have a fun I have a funny one okay what was it um one year for my birthday like my actual birth date fell on like a wednesday and i was at home and it was just my dad and me at home i guess like my sister and my mom were out of town for something and like my buddy this guy john he just like shows it at my doorstep let's go like interesting sup and we just like go down and play and like the next thing i know like my like five or six best friends are like all at my house and then i realized like oh like my dad invited all my friends over so i had this like surprise birthday but the surprise wasn't me walking in and everyone saying the surprise the surprise was just like the doorbell kept ringing like my friends started just kept showing up which is really cool that makes you want to cry because you still remember it that was one like that is actually so cute yeah that was a good one so we also did that for one of my friends.

43:08Was it Sydney? No. I can't remember when we did this, but it was after college in our adult life. Oh my God. We had a dinner, and then we slowly started. Everyone just started showing up, and then before we did, we should have a surprise party. And it was so fun. On the topic of birthdays. What? It's Haley's birthday. It's my sister's birthday today. June 22nd. I texted her. Did you? I texted her as well. I had my second baby just over two months ago and know from experience that every feeding journey is different. 45:39Ooh, a new H-bomb segment, Jules. Do you see me add that in there? I did. I said, where did this segment name come from? This is what I love about your brain. You could just put this in there as a topic, but instead he makes it its own segment. Question of the week. He makes it its own segment. Okay. My kids attended a pool party today. The host parents strongly discouraged me from staying because no other parents were there, and they promised me they would watch the kids like a hawk. When I returned to pick them up, no kids were watching The Pool with kids ages 8 through 12. I try not to be a helicopter parent, but this pissed me off.

46:14Am I overreacting? No adults were watching The Pool. Is that what I said? No, but it's okay. Should I reread it? Maybe you should say it. Yeah, reread it. Come on. Okay. My kids attended a pool party today. The parents strongly discour...

46:32Thank you for that. I'm going to leave this all in. I'm going to reread it. This is a no-cut podcast. I'm going to reread it for a third time. My kids attended a pool party today. The host parents strongly discouraged me from staying as no other parents were staying, and they promised me they would watch the kids like a hawk. When I returned to pick them up, no adults were watching the pool with kids aged 8 through 12 swimming. I try not to be a helicopter parent, but this really pissed me off. Am I overreacting? Absolutely not. Absolutely not overreacting. No such thing. I have two takes on this.

47:09So there was a pool at the birthday party we went to this weekend. And the conversation Alex and I had into this, because we had some friends there, and our friends love to watch our kids, was— Our friends are so helpful. They're always like, I got them, I got them. and we did the same but the conversation we had was no matter who is there no matter who offers no one watches tape around the pool because at the end of the day that accountability like she's so young she's so vulnerable like it needs to fall on us the buck has to stop with us and like you just even like as some of these parents their kids are older and like you just you know we know how quickly it can happen and we can't put that responsibility in on anyone on it on anyone And obviously she's so young and so vulnerable right now.

47:53So that was our experience this weekend and the approach we took. And I think the approach we want to keep taking until she learns how to swim. And then we can loosen that up. As it pertains to this, while I love the idea of telling the parents to drop their kids off, if you are going to tell parents to drop their kids off and there is a pool and the pool is part of the birthday party, you need to have a lifeguard. It's that simple. You need to have a lifeguard. And and that could be a parent who is fully dedicated and wearing a lifeguard shirt. But there is there needs to be a person allocated on pool duty from the beginning to the end.

48:33Like no ifs, hands or buts. I think so, too. If you're going to tell parents that they if you say we prefer you don't stay. Yeah. OK, I mean, those those are the important words there. When it comes to a pool, if you're saying we prefer you don't stay, because otherwise, if you're having a pool party, of course, stay. If one parent feels like they would like to watch for the safety of their kid, please stay. But if you're going to take it as far as saying we prefer that you don't stay and we will watch them, I need you out there at all times watching them. Not on your phone. Like I need you watching them.

49:03But I don't think you can host a birthday party and watch the kids is my point. You're doing too many things. Yeah, going inside getting cake. Getting the cake, getting the drinks out, making sure that like the bouncy castles fall. You can't be on pool duty. So you need to have someone, whether it be officially hired or like unofficially hired. Yeah. And your uncle is just appointed to pool duty. Yeah. Or they're on runner duty and you're on pool duty. Yeah. I totally agree. And I think, and here's the other thing, when it comes to your kids, if you have to ask in terms of safety, am I overreacting?

49:38My answer is going to be no. I don't think there's such thing as overreacting. When it comes to both safety. Yeah. Or when it comes to your kids safety. Totally. I don't know. I just think, yeah, I totally agree with that. Additionally, a pool update is Harrison told everyone our coping got stolen. That was embarrassing. Wait, what? What's the passcode? 96. You were born in 96? Oh, my God. Someone commented and they said, Jules, I hate to break it to you, but being born in 96 and then claiming that you're Gen Z is the most millennial thing you could ever do. That's a great comment. Jules, Jules.

50:15And I said, fine, I'll take it, but I'm not millennial. Fine, I will take it. Drop the mic. So we had the coping for our pool sitting outside. What is that? The tile that goes around the pool. Okay. The big, like, the surrounding cement-looking thing. Okay. That goes around the pool. And then we noticed yesterday it was gone. So Harrison was like, our coping got stolen. And he told three people on the block. They swapped it out. They just swapped out our coping. They just swapped it out and we didn't notice. The workers? Yes. Okay. They meant to swap it out. It wasn't stolen. Got it. It would have been hilarious if it was stolen.

51:00Well, no, it would not have been funny if it was stolen. But your neighborhood would have launched an investigation. 100%. Our neighborhood. Can I tell the story of the guy that? No. if it's what I'm thinking of then no oh really we need to have some privacy okay it just was not I just it was interesting a lot of investigative work on the street unnecessary investigative work okay we have a missing swimsuit I think it's fine I think the neighborhood pool's open very exciting but our pool they're telling us is going to be two weeks like harrison it's just not well it's not because like we didn't start the process last week it could have been two weeks if we had everything in order well so now you're telling me it's two weeks from today it's two weeks when once we um get things rolling all right things we learned this week okay kids aren't opposing you they are opposing your idea because their brain just learned they can be separate from you and have their own ideas so their brain is prioritizing being separate it's not manipulation it's just independence asserting itself so for example we could be like hey tate do you want and then before it's even out of our mouth no it's just like you don't want to go outside no um hey tate do you want eggs no but then we ask it differently sometimes and we're like what about huevos levos so it's really cute to see this happening um and it's really cute to give that's what this is where I think giving two options is really powerful like instead of saying do you want cheese just saying do you want the yellow cheese or do you want the baby bell cheese and watching her do that but she's also realizing she's here so here's a cute story of this where she's learning that she's separate is on the way out the door today I didn't see it but Harrison told me she came over and says besos which is kisses she asked for a beso before he left Maria saw it she did yeah yeah do you know what we can do so we can get her to do that if every time you or i leave we give each other a kiss goodbye yeah because what we do is we say i love you until she says i love you but we can do a kiss and then she'll think oh my god that would be adorable yeah she's really starting to understand the and communicate around her schedule so nai nai and good night and And when I put her down, she now says, love you, so it's clear.

53:43I love you. She's accepting bedtime. And it started a little while ago, but saying bye when we're leaving. Yeah, bye-bye. And now this basically, her accepting we're leaving, she used to fight us leaving. Now she gives us a kiss. Well, I also think she's understanding we come back. Yes. So that's a really helpful thing is when she doesn't think that just because we're leaving that we've left indefinitely. Yes. Right, that we can come back. So we have a question for the class, which is how to deal with Tate throwing things. Because she thinks it is the funniest thing to toss something and then go, uh-oh, and go get it.

54:26And we need that to stop. Yeah, the two biggest behavioral things we're focused on right now is number one, throwing, and then number two, pouring water on the ground. yes yesterday was milk and it and it's not so we're trying to explain to her we don't do that we hold on to the cheese sticks we don't throw the cheese sticks and we the milk stays in the cup we don't dump we try to show show not tell tell but it's really hard in those two instances so if anybody has any tips as to why they do that and what is a good idea to do about it and I know you're going to tell us to get a lid. That works sometimes, but sometimes she just also wants the cup.

55:10She loves and for a period of time, she was just drinking the cup as we drink the cup. She was doing a really good job of it. Now she's into pouring. But she was always pouring from one cup to another cup like a little science project, which was really cute. And now we've moved from watching it spill on the floor, which I'm sure is even more confusing because your cup today spilled on the floor. I thought about how much we set us back today with me drop in that cup yeah she's gonna think that that's normal yeah we're all doing that does she have a water table that's the thing that i feel like i see in the comments the most so we she has an outdoor water table at wawa's and they absolutely love the water table so what are we supposed to get a water table inside i don't know but like so she has a place that she is allowed to pour the like yes you redirect to the place that she is allowed to pour okay so you're minutes so we just do water pouring in the water pouring section.

56:03Correct. I don't know. No, I'm down for that. I like that. That's what I see the most in the comments is water table. But I don't know what you're supposed to do with it. Okay, so we could get a specific water table. The biggest hit we've probably ever had a toy is the vacuum. The baby vacuum. I feel like every time we say this, the toy lasts 48 hours and then she gets bored of it. But this is why I waited to say it. It's already been four days, and yesterday she was saying vacuum, vacuum. And she wanted to vacuum. So the vacuum in the Swiffer is very good. I'm sure today when the coffee spilled after we left, she probably went and Swiffered it.

56:43Fake Swiffered it. Yeah, if somebody can help us on the throwing and the water cup pouring, that would be amazing. I know you know that I don't need to say this. please don't check your phone again while we're recording you know what here you take it oh i'd love to you take the ipad you take us over the finish line here h i'd love to okay so next section is who uh for the person not holding the ipad they need to give the person holding the ipad 10 compliments okay um number one new segment an h bomb second let me do it i'll do i'll give you 10 ready yeah I think you're a phenomenal father I think you make every day really fun which I like about you um no no keep pulling the iPad no the comments need to go to you I think you're really good at um hobbies I like your hobbies that you pick so right now it's studio three and high rocks those are really fun hobbies number four put your phone up number four put your phone up Harrison

57:58Harrison yeah put what are you doing on your phone it's talking to my friend chat what are you chatting something for our next segment that's gonna happen right now that's gonna happen after this segment which is what I do have to pee so do we Can I pee in the last segment? Oh, no. What's the last segment? You got to learn to hold it. Okay. What do you want last segment to be? You pick. Let me tell you how beautiful you look today. Thank you. Okay. Yeah, those are very nice shoes as well. No, these are like my house shoes, but. You wearing your house shoes out of the house? Well, I have a couple pairs that are my upstairs and downstairs house shoes.

58:41I've banned Harrison's sneakers On the rug in our room Okay Because he has a way of walking I think you see the dirt and think I'll walk through that Because I'm spending so much time in the pool Harrison's spending a lot of time in the pool And then the shoes are going directly from the red dirt To the bedroom And it's really It's really We're struggling there So I've banned his shoes to which he replied then we're also banning your shoes but i don't spend a lot of time in my flip flops truck trutching around yeah my big question to end the episode up is pools getting ready swim lessons we've been doing they've been very fun as like a community building experience and getting the kids familiar with the water but have not been very effective in teaching them how to swim like the big topic is isr i'm very curious to hear parents experience with isr yeah because Because is that inherently the methodology that's been most effective in seeing either their kids or their peers' kids be most effective at learning how to swim at a young age?

59:50Or have they seen negative effects where it puts fear in the children? And is it age dependent? So if they start ISR from a younger age, does that have less sort of traumatic effects on them as opposed to if they started around two, then they know more and then they don't like swimming as much? I don't know. So we will lean on those that have done it. So please let us know in the comments. Harrison has to go pee and we have a flight to catch. We love you guys very much. Happy Monday. This week on Two Parents & A Podcast, happy Monday!!!! We are coming off of a CHAOTIC night… our fire alarm went off 4 TIMES between 3 and 5 AM, and we ended up having to take a screwdriver to the wall to dismantle the entire system to make it stop 😭 (+ Alex had postpartum heartburn so bad ChatGPT was actively trying to send her to the ER.) But the show goes on…

We start with our Father's Day BBQ recap (we fried chicken for the neighbors!!) and played a fun game: who are the top 10 most followed people on Instagram?! (We did NOT see a few of these coming.) Other Father's Day stuff: the viral "don't tell mom" article & Harrison getting GOT by World Cup marketing (aka he ordered himself an 11pm Father's Day McDonald's).

Speaking of the World Cup, the World Cup / parenting story all over our feeds this weekend: should a player leave the World Cup for the birth of his son?! (A Belgium player AND a Norway player both had to make this call this weekend!) Harrison and Alex are NOT on the same page about this one, and we want your take in the comments.

OK next up: kids' birthday parties. We are LOVING them right now (but is it just because we aren't going to a TON?!). We did the math and apparently 48 birthday parties per year is a real possibility. We have a “QUESTION OF THE WEEK” (an h-bomb lol) to go along with this topic: would you let your kid go to a pool party where the host parents told you to leave and then NO adults were watching the pool?! (We have STRONG feelings.) Finally another question we genuinely need your help on: ISR vs. group swim lessons - what's actually working for your kid?!

LOVE YOU GUYS!
