In short
The episode mixes two themes: (1) perspective vs. “toxic positivity” during stressful travel disruptions, and (2) practical “must-haves” for traveling with a baby under 12 months, plus building an “ultimate” baby playroom.
Guests
No guests appear in the transcript; it’s hosted by Two Parents (Harrison and Temi Denton-Hurst reading/narrating). Mentions include Jennifer Welch (past boss), Alex Kost (Harrison’s business partner/best friend), and “Neighbor T” (a contractor friend), but they are not guests.
Key claims
Honest communication matters—acknowledge when things truly suck, then look for positives when possible. Traveling is manageable with the right routine “constants” (sound machine, sleep sack) and planning (confirm crib/pack-n-play). For airport logistics, add ~20 minutes buffer because the stroller/Duna triggers security alarms.
Notable examples
A canceled Dallas flight leads to a perspective debate after they witness a father missing his son’s Air Force Academy graduation run. Playroom details: childproof cushion furniture (House of Noah), a table for Winnie, a playpen, and plans for a felt wall and a small rock-climbing wall. Travel examples include using a Duna for gate-checking and packing, and door-dashing forgotten items (formula packets, sleep sacks).

0:17This episode is brought to you by Facebook. So you were scrolling on Marketplace, and there it was, the bike you'd been searching for. You sent a message, and it turned out the seller was super chatty, kind of funny, and an avid cyclist. The next thing you know, you're in a cycling crew. Well, a community cycling group. The thing about Facebook, you might find more than what you're looking for. From a browse to a bike ride, this summer, find more on Facebook. Welcome to another episode of Two Parents and a podcast. Not in Austin because we are in Oklahoma City edition. No prequel today. What does that mean?
0:57Well, I feel like we normally have been like talking and then our casual talking goes into the – Oh, no pre-roll? I don't know what it's called. There's a sequel and a prequel and I think that the sequel – Yeah, pre – Okay, there was this in Yellowstone. The prequel is before and the sequel is after. Yeah. But I think you made pre-roll. Pre-roll. Like we do the kind of chat beforehand but not today. Nope. Not today. Because today we are not at home. We're in Oklahoma still. We came here for my grandmother's funeral, which was lovely. I have to give a shout out to my mom and aunt who they had these doves come and the great grandkids held the doves and set them off at the burial.
1:48And because Tate obviously can't hold a dove, I was the one that did it for her. and I posted this photo on my Instagram but like the other great grandkids were like so chill holding the dove and I just knew I was like oh no no no no like this isn't my thing like I kind of get a little scared and I was just I had this dove that was had a personality to it and kept trying to like claw me and turning its head all the way around just looking at me and it was freaking me out but all that to say but Tate did like to pat pat pat the dove but I thought that doing the dove release was awesome. Yeah, it was a beautiful ceremony.
2:24And I thought what he shared about the dove release was really powerful as well, which when he was talking about how he's like, you know, people always ask me when we release the doves, where do they go? And he talked about the farm that they live on and how they go back home and the symbolic nature of the way they go back home is the way your grandmother is going back to her home. Yeah. And I thought that that was very powerful. So Jennifer Welch, who I reference to you often, she was my first boss right out of college. And her dad, Rick, was a – I'm going to sort of butcher this, but he was like a bird.
3:19He had these birds, okay? He could let them go hundreds of miles away, and they can fly back directly to his house. That's wild. Well, like pigeon carriers, right? It's incredible. And this is what the guy yesterday was saying, how these birds – so they will race pigeons. So you can start them, and then they'll do a 200-mile race, and they will go, and they'll fly, and they'll just land right on your arm. It's the craziest thing. Wild. So I knew yesterday where the guy was going with this. I was like, oh, these doves are going to fly home. I did not. I did not. I thought that like they were new doves every time.
3:54You thought they just let them go and then they flew away out into the atmosphere. Yeah. Yeah. Like for sure. No. For sure. That's what I thought. Okay. So we were getting on our flight yesterday to go home and we sat on the tarmac for four hours because of weather in Dallas and then they ended up canceling our flight. Harris and I looked at each other and we were like, you know what? But this is a great – this is okay. It's a Tuesday night. Wednesday, we have a good amount of work things to do, but nothing time sensitive except we needed to record this episode and we needed to get it to P to edit.
4:29But like there was nothing that – we didn't have like a wedding the next morning. Yes. We're very big into perspective right now. and so um i want to see if i can find the um the story that i i shared the other day but it doesn't i i'm actually going to look for it real quickly and what story um oh the quote you read me not the quote the um harrison has been reading me a lot of really good quote like daily are you subscribed to like a couple quote things it's a it's a combo it's a combo of accounts i follow on twitter and did we okay you guys in in carmel i bought the daily stoic did we lose it i think so oh there's always a casual oh this is such a good one too but i actually haven't shared that with you yet i'm really upset um you kind of need to find it at this moment okay sorry so we're we're you didn't find the quote no i found it okay so um as i was saying we're big on perspective right now and this was a little um a little story that i liked um on perspective and it's a traveler approached three stone cutters working on a construction site and asked each.
5:49Okay, we'll slow it down. What? I've heard it and I couldn't understand you. A traveler approached three stone cutters working on a construction site and asked each one of them what they were doing. The first stone cutter said, I'm cutting stone. The second stone cutter replied, I'm building a wall. But the third stone cutter smiled proudly and said, I'm building a cathedral. Same task, different perspective so when so i have heard quotes like this before okay as well and so whenever i heard it i was like i know perspective but then you challenged me on like specific situations like i can't remember what was happening oh maybe it was our travel day in napa and it was just like oh you really drilled it down because i was like i've heard that a million times and you're like but it's directly applicable to everything in your life i think i think last night was a great example which was like we could sit there and be frustrated like we just sat on the tarmac for four hours with our baby we're not um home after three weeks um we uh had you know we had a schedule in austin tomorrow which like we now can't do or it was like let's flip the perspective of hey we get to spend another night in oklahoma city kate gets to spend all all morning with your family yeah we have built-in babysitters we get to like record in in a new place you're missing a big one um what did we do last night oh we got to eat at bra but we literally got to go to like your got to go to brahms like your childhood burger joint and um and then the big thing that we touched on what you said was we didn't have anything major going on in austin today we didn't and the example you used was wedding and like the crazy thing that happened is it must have been three to four minutes after you had said we don't have anything big like a wedding we heard a guy I, very upset, probably 10, 15 feet away from us.
8:07And... We heard him on the phone at first in the corner, and he was on speakerphone, and it was like, he was like, I don't know what to do. And I was just like, what is happening? And then he came over, and he goes, he was waiting on his Uber, and he was standing in front of us, because we were waiting on my parents standing out front, and he was waiting on somebody to pick him up. And he turned to us, and he was like, were you guys on that Dallas flight? And we were like, yes. And he was like, man, my son's graduating tomorrow in San Antonio at 6 a.m. from the Air Force Academy. And they get up and they do this run and it's this really iconic thing.
8:41Man, and I'm going to miss it. And you could see he had tears in his eyes. Yeah, and it was heartbreaking. He had a shirt on that he had made for his son. Yeah, it was so sad that he wasn't going to be able to make it. And I think the perspective there is, I mean, that's like, as we talk about perspective, that's like a really tough, shitty situation. Yeah. And I'm trying to wrap my head around, like, if the roles were reversed, how you reframe that. Because that was really hard. And that isn't where I was, like, going with the whole perspective thing initially. but but no but I do think this though in those moments right like I do think because we don't know because all we all we got to do is encounter him for two minutes from there though we just have to hope his power of perspective takes over something there will be some silver lining somewhere everything happens for a reason like maybe it'll change him in some way maybe like I don't know or maybe he maybe him and his son will take a trip because he missed it you know maybe it'll empower him to take his son somewhere.
9:54But I'm actually going to push back on here. I think like oftentimes we can shift our perspective. And I think in our situation, we are very fortunate where there was a lot of positive that we could find in the flight getting canceled. But I think where we also got to be honest is sometimes life punches you in the face and things suck. and and i think that we unfortunately saw someone get punched in the face and in a sin who was who literally went through the same cancellation that that we did and and and i think in those situations it is a lot harder to find perspective but yes i do hope that he you know finds other ways to live that to live out you know the moments that that he missed so let me ask you this is it toxic positivity do you think to to then go here with it of like okay so if you go back to your three stone cutters yeah right the first guy who says i'm cutting stone probably doesn't want to be their cutting stone but the other guy that says i'm building a cathedral.
11:10He's also cutting stone, right? Like, do you think there's such thing as in this scenario with this guy, like we'll call him the guy in the green shirt because he had this green shirt on with his son's initials that he had ironed on. It was really, really upsetting. But it was just a precious story. He was so proud. He was so proud. He was so proud of his son. Like, do you think then it's
11:35should, do you recommend or I don't know if recommend is the right word, but do you think he then goes like, okay, I'm thankful that like I get to call my son and I will see my son. Like, is that toxic positivity or is it okay just to be like, no, I'm just upset that I missed it. Like, I'm so upset. That's what I'm saying is like, I think sometimes you just got to like be honest. I've like, I just got punched in the face and like, it's really shitty. And I'm going to live in that shittiness for, you know, a certain period of time before, like I do move on and I do look for the positive perspective.
12:05But I think we got to remain honest. about what, like when things, when there is things to look forward to and then when there is things to be positive about versus like when there's not. So one thing - Like if we had a major event in Austin, if it was like Sid's wedding - Oh my God, if her bridal luncheon was the next morning? Yeah. Or if like - And like that would fucking suck. And we got it like - You gotta be honest about that. The point is like we had nothing, but we could have been frustrated because we'd spent so much time being like, we've been gone forever. The house is done. We're excited to get back.
12:44But how many times like on the way to a bachelor or bachelorette party, are you trying to arrive Thursday and you don't get there till Friday because there's like flight stuff. And it's like, that does suck. And one thing I like that you've taught me, okay, is just like the power of honest communication. And another example of this is yesterday, oh, somebody gave me a compliment. and I'm all like I always say if somebody says something bad about you somebody says something good about you like nothing changes right like it doesn't matter either way yeah and you said to me yesterday you're like listen while I'm all for that while we don't we don't celebrate the goods we don't celebrate the bads like I actually think it's like good to sit here for a second respect that's really cool do you remember that um at the car and sitting in the car at fuzzies i i unfortunately you know i'm the worst multitasker in the world and i kind of missed the first part of what you said but i heard the second part what were you multitasking because we're just sitting in these two chairs like what were you what was the other thing you were doing i was thinking about what the what the i was like we we've gone so off the um the walls on on the on the on what we thought we were going to talk about today and i was just thinking okay okay, what are we actually going to be?
13:59Was there anything that we were supposed to talk about on this episode that we need to get it back on? But that's why you're the lead on this because you can multitask and you can keep the train on the tracks. And when I try and keep the train on the tracks, the train just stops. No, the train just stops. But you just need to recognize that not only are you now, now my learning from today is not only are you a bad multitasker, you're not doing another task right now. I'm multi-thinking. Your own brain can distract you. I'm multi-thinking. That's a real problem for me. Yeah, I think the point I was trying to make to what we were saying yesterday is more so celebrating the small wins of life.
14:39Which I used to never do. I used to never let myself do it. That's an Alex Kost whole ordeal. This Alex Kost guy, he is Harrison's business partner. Best friend. He's your best friend. He's your first phone call. He's your everything. He's your other half. you the things he's taught you like celebrate small wins um there's a good restaurant in every city find it and go eat at it and enjoy it life should be spontaneous like he's taught you so many fun things that then i've by proxy gotten to experience he's like what's oklahoma's spot i should he's like there's got to be a spot that like there's nothing else like it i should it's your spot guys let's talk about cozy earth because you know i am obsessed with the bamboo sheets because they are temperature regulating and they give you, they're guaranteed to give you a comfortable night's sleep.

Okay, so we were sad. speaking of just honest communication we were just sad that we didn't go home because we have truly been living out of a hotel for three weeks and our wood floors are done so house update not only are our wood floors done fresh coat of paint our bedroom was an just a tinge of gray color and it needed to be a bright white so we did pure white by Sherwin Williams because speaking of Jennifer Welch when all else failed back in the day she taught me Here's what we would do.
17:10When you're choosing a paint color, you put up three to four to five paint swatches on the wall and you go see it in the morning, in the middle of the day, and in the evening because paint colors change over time. And so typically that's what I would have liked to have done is put up a couple of different paint samples. But we weren't home. And our neighbor was being the, he was serving as the general contractor. And he said, I need a paint color. And I said, we're just going to go with pure white by Sherwin-Williams. And we're just going to hope that that works. Because most of the time that's the paint color that worked.
17:39We walked back into this house. Pure white by Sherwin-Williams looked so good. So I have a couple things. One is I don't think we use pure white by Sherwin-Williams. And I only say that because when I was cleaning up the paint, I noticed it wasn't a Sherwin-Williams brand. They can go spin it and put it in anything. Okay. Okay. So I want to put some color on what happened because – Some white? No. Some white, yes. That's a joke. I thought you said some white. I did, like because of the white paint color. Oh, not light. So just like – I don't know if we want to call them Mrs. by me. So what I didn't know we needed was I didn't know we needed a carpenter to like re-put the things on the bottom of the wall.
18:28Floorboard. The floorboards. No, not – is that floorboards? Yeah. I don't think it's floorboards. The moldings. Crown molding. The crown moldings. On the bottom though? I think it's called the floorboard on the bottom and the crown mowing on the top. Okay. Well, I didn't know that after we did the wood floors, we needed a guy to do that. And I didn't know that in our current bedroom, one wall was white and one wall was gray. And I also didn't know that we were going to need to paint the first things that I was talking about. So I didn't know we needed a carpenter. I didn't know we needed a painter for two different jobs.
18:59And I knew we just like were at the end. Things were taking longer and we were gone. and neighbor t i mean the way he stepped he was at our house every single day that we were gone we used his painter frank loved him who i i do want to like start a list i don't know if we should and jules you can tell us this terrible idea of like just like recommended people like if you want a painter in austin here's frank if you want a floor guy in austin here's royce just so we can send these these guys business because like they've done awesome jobs somebody texts us and says hey who's your painter we just we refer him okay of course we refer him okay maybe the dm the two parents account because i i'm so bad at looking at my messages um and he the carpenter his guy so like we were only going to be 75 done by the time we got back but But because – and my job was only going to be done 75 % effectively.
20:04But because of Neighbor T, the job has been done 100 % effectively. What a friend. Thank you. He doesn't listen. He's not going to hear the thank you. Because I'm very, very happy. I love how it all came together. He did such a good job. It just like really changed – to have a fresh coat of paint and to have like holes patched and to have the white on there and to have the molding. Like it just really brought it all together. And these wood floors look so good. So, so now, okay. So that, that part's done and we're like moving back upstairs. But the problem is like we had one day at home. We had 24 hours at home before we came here.
20:40So the clothes are kind of everywhere. Everything's kind of everywhere. Our bed's not in yet. We need to get our bedding. But the, the one room that just looks like how many times have you brought up? Well, Tate's playroom. Tate's playroom. But I think more thorough update, Tate's nursery is done. Done. The guest room is done. Yeah. It needs art hung and it's not done. And it needs to be. Close. But I don't think we get to call these things done yet. So actually no room is done. Tate's room needs a circle rug. Carpet. So it's not done. And the drapes need to be rehung. But like it's 90 % there.
21:20But you can't call that done. Okay. So Tate's room 90 % done. Guest room 90 % done. Um, bedroom a lot cause we need the bed and we need the built-ins. We're meeting the built-in people today. Yeah. Three o 'clock. Um, and you know, you're not going to be there for that. No, we are. What time do we land? Two 13. Okay. We will be there for that. Wow. Yeah. And if not, I got a neighbor. He's such a good friend. Oh my goodness. I love that man. Um, I was going to make a joke and say, Maybe I should kiss him on the lips in reference to – A callback to last week's episode. A callback to last week's episode, but we won't.
22:00But where we were going – Bedroom is – Tate's playroom. Tate's playroom. Okay. You – like I think we should rarely use the term 10 out of 10 because I think it needs to be held for like when people in life – When things are tense. Or restaurants in life nail it or cities nail it. You don't want to give out 10 out of 10 too often. But you got to give them. You got to give them. you've done you've done a 10 out of 10 on this room the furniture that you ordered is it's it's this like cushion furniture it was gifted by house of noah thank you house of noah that looks great but is fully childproof so like the coffee table's childproof the side tables are childproof the couch is because it's all cushions there's nothing sharp in the room the mat it and it just like it looks great and it's fully functional and i just see how like she is going to have hours upon hours upon hours of joy in that room we are and it looks great the art oh the art is so great uh needed to be my what it needed to be was a happy magical room and we knew because we had said this is going to be our playroom we're going to dedicate a room in the house to be the playroom.
23:19And then I just thought to myself, well, if we're going to do that, if we're going to do it, then we're going to do it the right way. And I just wanted to take that room over. And I wanted, I, I realized this also about myself being home. Um, because my mom, whenever I was, I was in eighth grade when we moved into this house that my parents live in now. And I remember my mom said, you can pick out your wallpaper in your, in your bathroom. And they showed me a bunch of different wallpapers. And I picked this one that's like pink. pink I put it on my Instagram story it's my favorite thing in the house still till this day it's pink with like hand-painted flowers on it I don't think they're hand-painted at all they look I'm just saying they don't look screen printed they look like painted and they're blue and then in my closet I don't know if you notice behind all my walls I have it painted hot pink and I realized what motherhood's brought me back to is like I've always loved pink I've always loved flowers I've always loved bright and that's like it reminds me I was standing in my bathroom this morning and I was thinking this reminds me so much of Tate's playroom now that's awesome and I know I'll never get sick of it because like you know 15 years later I'm still not sick of 20 years later I'm still not sick of my bathroom amazing should we talk through what like the playroom is good is and what we're gonna have in there well we should talk through what we're gonna do with that one wall which we have different ideas for okay so what we have so So we have the really comfy, cool furniture.
24:44And then we ordered a little table to come where her and – do we say the other baby's name or no? We do Winnie. Where her and Winnie can sit and draw. They can't draw yet, but where they'll eventually be able to draw. But they'll be able to like sit and pound the table. Pat, pat, pat. Pat, pat, pats. We have the playpen coming. and then my grand idea for one of the open walls is I want to build a little rock climbing wall up there so they can just like do a little crawling I saw an Instagram video of this like little kid who is 10 months old climbing up the wall that kid was 10 months old yeah oh yeah and so the dad will be doing that at 10 months but at a point in the future it's like have and just Yeah, having this be the ultimate playroom.
25:32And then I want to do a felt wall because somebody commented on TikTok like you need – you should do a felt wall. And I had this flashback and I thought I used to have a felt board. I used to have like a – you know, like an equivalent to a wipe off board but it was felt. And I had these little felt shapes and animals and things and I would put them on there and I would take them off and it was like a really magical memory. which reminds me, okay, one thing my cousin was talking to me about is like a childhood memory. Like how when you're a child, your takeaway when you're older is so much different.
26:07So for example, when we were all over at my parents' house yesterday, her son Sawyer was like, oh, I've been here just like so many times. And Jamie was like, yeah, like if, you know, if your grandma couldn't watch you and your dad and I, if we all were busy, yeah, you would come to aunt Kim's house. And he was like, I was here all the time. And she was like, no, you weren't. And she was like, it's so funny how like kids can remember things and it can seem so big to them, but to the adults, it's different. Another example she used was like one time, um, I think it was her. She had like an IV put in her as a kid and because she had like the flu or something, but the way like she remembered it was like her arm was almost sliced off like because to you because to you it feels so big but it's like that's your child memory totally and so that when my mom set out some of my baby stuff there was a felt board there and I remember thinking or no there was a cash register I remember thinking that this cash register was the equivalent of like checking out at Walmart like it had every single thing to it and then I saw out the other day and I'm like, it was just a little cash register.
27:18But to the many humans, it seems so big. Totally. Let's talk about magnetic me. You guys, there are plenty of new experiences in parenthood that are surprising. Think about changing diapers, think about crawling for the first time. 28:26So, well, that's what I'm thinking about with this rock climbing wall is to us, it's going to be, you know, 12 pegs on the wall to her she if she remembers it she will be like i had a whole rock climbing what do you call it well i don't know it's a rock climbing wall do you know in college rock climbing gym in college me and nugget um who i reference a lot she's my best friend we were roommates we did everything together there was in norman oklahoma there was a rock climbing center that opened up and it was before spring break and we're like we're gonna get in shape and we're gonna go join the rock climbing game we went one time and it is so much harder than I ever thought Janu's gonna use the rock climbing wall more than uh Tate and Winnie you neighbor T he will he's just gonna be like alright he's that type of guy are you gonna use pink pegs no you make him traditional colors I've been thinking about this I've been thinking about this I don't know we'll have to talk about it we have to see if pink ones even exist I'm sure they do because we could just paint them I I think that for the room pink is great I think we're going a little pink heavy I think baby number two comes do we want or do we want and it's a boy how many changes are we going to need to make to the room if it's a boy we just are going to just swap out one couch for blue and then they'll be like it'll be both okay let me what's your favorite part of the house right now her room like in thinking about going back like as we it's like work's done we've been on the road we're excited to go home um the main thing is like waking up and putting bubber in her playroom yeah because it used to be a guest bedroom and so we and we can't okay we can't set bubber on beds anymore or anything like that because she's getting to be mobile and so it's perfect timing that we have the playroom and we're going to just get one of those little the baby gate literally arrives today that's like the two things i'm looking forward to getting home to most is home cooked meals and um and bumper's room i'm overeating out do you know it makes me wonder how i d i truly think part of the reason i was so sick while i was pregnant is because we ate out every day for six months.
30:52I think it made a big difference. Yeah, I really, truly do. Okay. So, so speaking of travel this week, we're going to talk about, because we get so many questions about like traveling with Tate and how Harrison typed out how many flights she's been on, on the way here. And what's the answer? She's been on a lot of flights because we've been to quite a few different, different places. The only repeat city is, I think, Oklahoma City.
31:23Flown to. Yeah, I guess so. New York, Park City, Hawaii, Vancouver, LA, San Francisco. Charleston. Charleston. Miami. Miami. Bubba loves to travel. I know how ridiculous it is that this job has been to so many places. But. But that's the way we chose to do it. It's the way we chose to do it. Because like one thing that we heard a lot from other parents is travel as much as you can over the first 12 months. Because when they're one and two, it's a heck of a lot harder to travel. And we've been very fortunate that she's enjoyed being in different cities and is very good on airplanes. I'm down a mark per our last week's episode that is a dad break this kid is a legendary flyer she's a good flyer we're lucky with that super lucky and here's the thing I think flying with a baby goes like this zero to three months easy because they essentially sleep the whole time three to six months I still thought was very easy six to nine months put up your laptop forget it you are on that flight it is play play play play hold I mean you're passing her back and forth you want a diet coke forget it she needs diet coke's getting spilled but that to me is not it's an I would only edit I would make I don't think that's as much six to nine months I think that's very much like month like nine maybe month eight is when they start is when like we're on full full play duty I may make a proposal for a new segment which is parent brag of the week so you can do one so i can just like do one and own the parent brag um but i but we didn't it's not a brag because like but we're bragging about her not about us i know like i just i like i think it's so cool i said like that this child like she'll just love to sit there and like look at the clouds or just like look at the people around her yeah but it is like a disneyland for her at this moment yeah but we didn't like do anything you know what i mean like that just had she just happened to like the flying situation yeah she doesn't like car sitting she doesn't like car seats yeah exactly driving not her thing so like we just got lucky on that but i do think like she's our child we like to fly she likes to fly um so long story short hold on one thing that one thing that breaks my heart okay her favorite thing to do on the airplane, she's realized if she puts her head between the two seats behind, there's going to be a person and that person's going to be smiling and waving back at her.
34:08And what has happened for the first time ever is she put her head between the seats and looked at the person behind her and smiled and they looked at her and they looked down and it broke my heart and I wanted to cry because she, they, my mom always said, baby's coming to the world, looking for somebody, looking for them. And when she's looking around the airport at all these people and they look back at her and smile and wave she gets so excited that they noticed her and when the person behind on the air on the airplane yesterday just put their headphones in and looked down it broke my heart because she just wants to be seen but she kept going back she like didn't like it was so she like didn't like understand that they like she like kept going back and like claps and looking and they just they weren't engaging and so i think the first time somebody hurts her feelings i think i will cry i'm pretty sure i'll cry um i know i'll cry okay i'm gonna i'm gonna veer us back okay get us back on the track so um the long story short is we have done an insane amount of traveling with our daughter wait i have a question for you and we've had a black yeah would would we have done this much travel if she didn't travel well No, not a chance.
35:22I mean, that's the missing piece here. That's where I was going. We've had so much fun traveling with her. She's been such a joy while we've gone on these trips that it's not like these were booked nine months in advance. Everything's kind of booked one to two weeks in advance because we're having such fun experiences and we're very fortunate in many ways and we recognize that isn't the case with most. and like it's very much the luck of the draw. But yeah, she loves to – she's an adventurous kid. Well, and we have flexible work schedules and like travel for work. And so being able to bring her with us is – like some of my favorite memories, I think about Miami.
36:04I think about her playing in the sand for the first time. I think about her in Napa where we just did 5 o 'clock dinners every night and brought her and she ate with us and clapped by the fire pits. So those moments like bring me a lot of joy. And yeah, I think that for sure, if she didn't love the travel, she didn't love airplanes, we wouldn't do it. Yeah. But the other thing I want to say is the more we travel, because it used to really overwhelm me. The more we travel, the more I know like how to pack my travel back. So we're going to share with you guys some of our travel tips. Yeah. I think very much are things we've learned while traveling with a baby.
Read the full transcript
36:42Okay. So we're going to break it down into the airport part. And there's a lot we don't have figured out with travel. Okay. For sure. But there's a couple like takeaways that we were, we were thinking about. And the first one is moms. If you're pumping, I get a lot of questions about this. How do you travel with your pump? You can take a medical bag. So you can typically have two carry-ons. If you have your pump, you can have three carry-ons. So I throw my pump and my pump parts, which let me say this. I have the strapless pumping bra and I keep, I put the bra, the whole bra in the fridge because you can put your pump parts in the fridge and like for 24 hours and then they don't grow bacteria.
37:24So I always keep that bra and my pump in one bag with the diapers. Like I just have like a whole tape bag that goes underneath my seat that I keep. Then I have like my bag and then I have like a purse. Um, so my big, my number one thing is like, if you're traveling with your pump parts, you can take them on the plane and don't worry about like, how do I say this it's not the most sanitary operation I guess every time I pump I just go to the bathroom and I rinse everything out but there's not a lot of soap that happens um and that's worked fine for me so far so that's the first thing medical back number two we travel with the duna because I don't know if you guys know this but if you take the duna you don't have to have the base when you travel it can sleep it can seat belt in yeah yeah so um we just want to know what were you doing over there on that i was looking at i was looking at you know for because sometimes i find myself talking to myself when i lose you for a moment because i know you can't hear me talking because you're reading your phone i was looking at the notion document that had the things that we're going to talk about it's laugh out loud funny some of the things we didn't talk about um that we were supposed to um and i was curious we wrote down some notes on what we've learned traveling with a baby so medical we're going through keys to getting through the airport the third having the third carry on the duna just being the go-to you can gate check it um the best part about the duna too is if you're carrying the baby throw we throw all of our bags in the duna and use it as just like a bag carrier yeah so that's actually a great tonneau so the best way we get to the airport is we put her in the carrier and then with all the carry-ons we put the carry-ons in the duna then we gate check the duna yeah um and then number three thing that we've learned is um we need to add 20 minutes of buffer time to what we'd normally do.
39:28And the biggest driver of that is not the milk going through security. It is our stroller, our duna, sets off that secondary alarm more than 50 % of the time. And when the stroller sets off the alarm through security, it has to go through like a deep check where they screen everything in your bag. And you. And you. And your shoes. so that and that extra strain like can legit take 15 plus minutes so that's been a weird run i am very curious why it goes up i feel like like it's maybe acid from they say clean that that's what the last guy told us because the austin airport guy we've had him three times and he's like yo clean the stroller i'm like we do clean the stroller and he's like clean it again because like it'll it'll stop setting it off so i think it can be like spit up or i don't know what it is something in there is, is getting it to go off.

So, okay, so then the question becomes like, how do we do routine, bedtime, sleep, time zones, et cetera?
41:46So let's talk through that. Okay, what are the keys to her routine while traveling? Well, one thing that we do is we have her constants, right? So we travel with her hatch sound machine. We travel with her sleep sack. And so we set bedtime up. So wherever we are, it's like, okay, the lights go off. She gets her milk or I'll put her, a lot of times I put her on the boob at night anyways. And then we turn on the sound machine and she gets in her sleep sack, which is the exact same thing she does at home. So you just recreate it in the hotel room or the Airbnb. be. And it says to her, okay, I'm winding down and this is sleep time.
42:21And then the best thing that's happened is she sleeps. We're lucky, but this baby will sleep wherever she is. Like taking her a bit off of her routine and putting her in another area has been no problem for sleeping. Yeah. I think it's really interesting. You've done a very good job at identifying like, all right what are those critical things that we need to develop enough routine where she can sleep great wherever she is and i think you i think you've you've really nailed that and obviously it's going to be very different for for every um every kid but by identifying like we just need these items um it's it's it's made it's made traveling really easy the other thing kind of to my bucket on the roles i take as the hotel booker um a major key is ahead of time confirming with the hotel that they have a packing player they have a crib and making sure that you get it reserved and it's in the room because if you don't do it ahead of time there's a chance that they won't have one there um or uh there can be like tremendous delays getting it to your room which can which has caused uh problems for us once or twice so like that's you can't just like assume that they're gonna have a crib or assume they're gonna have a pack and play that may sound obvious um no but sometimes you just forget i gotta play offense offense on getting it to the room do not wait until you get there because like you don't know what's going to happen you don't know if you've traveled time zones if she'll be like get that crib in that room yep um and then what else do you want to talk about our door dash situation because there was a time where the hotel it was like it was in carmel the hotel was like we might be out of pack and plays and they had told us they would have them and we were like we're not messing with it so we door dashed a pack and play from target and I think it was like 42 minutes.
44:28And like the amount of time we've door dashed. Yeah, well, I would say that in traveling, there's 20 % or there's 10 % leakage, okay? And that leakage is like, you're forgetting passies. You're forgetting bows. You're forgetting - Sleep sacks. Sleep sacks. We've forgotten a sleep sack. And door dash, this is not an ad. No, it's not. It is not an ad. They have been – it's just been like a consistent – Formula packets. The formula packets. Yesterday. Which is another huge go-to for us. Yeah, it's just been like a massive go-to saver where like I kind of know every time we get somewhere, there's going to be one thing we forgot and we'll door dash it.
45:16It will be there 30 to 40 minutes and we probably become like the power users of power users. Yeah. And I think we always ask ourselves like, okay, what are the things that we can't afford to forget? And like, for me on the airplane, if let's say we have a five hour flight, like I can't leave my pump because you can't door dash a pump to the airplane by the time you're there. Right. Like that. So then we have our non-negotiables of things we can't forget. If we forget a sleep sack. Okay. Well, that we can manage to get to the hotel room by then. Yeah. But I always check like, okay, what do I have to have?
45:50I have to have my pump parts. Yeah. We have to have the bottles with milk in them. And then we have to have backup formula if I run out of milk. Those are the things that we cannot make it from point A to point B without. But other than that, if we forget passies or things like that fall on the way there, it's like we can manage it. So we always ask ourselves. So one item that we haven't used, that we just bought, that we feel like we are dummies for not using. I cannot believe. Is the slumber pod. because as fortunate as we've been where she's been great about sleeping on the road she's been doing that in our room and then we spend the night just kind of tiptoeing around with our flashlights with our own like little flashlights on and these these slumber pods which cover the crib and darken it out will then make our lives a lot um a lot better when when she's in bed so that i'm very excited to get with ourselves yeah do you know every single it was just an excuse for us um to not have to actually never mind what i was i it didn't make any sense what i was gonna say okay well we i cannot believe like every single night we've been on vacation for the the past nine months, every single night we put her to bed at, let's call it eight.
47:15And then you and I turn on our phones at the dimmest light. And we walk around the hotel room and whisper. And it's like, we still would need to whisper, but this slumber pot, it's like a tent that goes over the crib and it keeps it really dark. Like, what are we doing? I like barely wash my face. So silly. I'm like trying to find my pump parts and it's just, it's like ridiculous. The things that we won't do. Anyways, that's been ordered and it arrived. tomorrow. But one thing I want to talk about is time zone situations because what we just did was we went, so we're central time, obviously, and we just went to the East coast of Charleston.
47:50And then we just went to the West coast to Napa. And we got to give it to Tate for like luck of the draw on this of she's a really good sleeper. And she, with the exception of like her normal sleep regressions, right? Like one month ago, I think we just kept saying sleep regressions, sleep regressions. But it feels like we bounced back through that. We have because she hit all those milestones in a week. Yeah. Like that was just a crazy. Like last night she slept. My safety alarm went off this morning. Is what woke us up. So like what happens is Tate always wakes us up and they usually get up around 630.
48:21But I always set a safety alarm. So this morning I set one for 730. My alarm went off. I couldn't believe it. We all slept. Like we just knocked out. Maybe it was the Brahms. but all that to say yeah her sleep is back which has been great brums puts you in uh in short-term comas asleep come i mean i slept so good last night i want to get i want to get whatever sheets my mom has on her bed but okay so how how i think about time zones when it comes to sleeping though her bedtime is a range at home sometimes she's tired at 7 30 sometimes she's tired at nine and like that to me is fine. I'm just that I didn't, I didn't know what kind of parent I would be.
49:06I didn't know if I'd be like super regimented. I'm a bit loose. I'm like, I'm like a loose schedule with some guard rails is sort of how I feel like. So when we go East or West coast, we just adjust her slightly within that time range, but it's not like she goes to bed at five o 'clock there. She still goes to bed within the 7.30 to nine range. Yeah. No, I think that you've done a good job at like feeling out the situation to, you know, all right, like how can she, like what's the best adjustment for her to keep her in a consistent routine, but also be cognizant of the current time zone we're in.
49:48And I think that you've done a great job and it's worked out very well. and she's like, and she's played ball. Yeah, I think like one thing we were really watching was like, Will, is this travel going to rock her or is it going to be okay? And what we found, because we just watched her smiley levels, is I almost, I don't want to say they've increased. I would just say they've stayed the exact same. And like, if we saw it knocked her, I think that we would have scaled back. Yeah, I think that her smiley levels are, because I'm sure that this is going to come up in a future episode, so I don't want it to contradict.
50:27I think her smiley levels over the last four weeks are far and away the highest they've ever been. I think the percentage of the time of the day that she's spending happy is, right now, it's crazy high. It's amazing. It's beautiful. I don't think that's because of travel i think that's because of just like her you know natural progression of uh well she's more aware now of becoming older she can smile back at you yeah so i think the point being like we really want we watch her happiness levels and we watch her like her crying levels and they they're they're the best they've ever been which i think is why we've kept on the path that we've been going but because I was nervous about it I was like are are we gonna knock her off of her routine you know she has magic circle she's busy she has magic circle every day at 10 o 'clock with Maria and I didn't know if we took that and we were traveling and things like that she still has her two naps a day like we're on that schedule still like she wakes up three hours later she takes her nap and then she takes her second nap and like so that's that's all still rocking it's just on the go and And I didn't know.
51:39And listen, there's going to be a time where we come on here and we're like, oh my gosh. It will turn. We will have our tides. We know that. But I think that we're taking everything in stride right now and just like watching how it goes. But hold on. I feel like I'm off here on my time. I want to talk about this time zone bedtime a little bit more. Okay. I'm fluid with it. But one thing that I was getting a lot of questions on is like, do you keep her on central time? and the answer to that is no because we're also not on central time i just keep her on her nine to ten hours of sleep time like as long as she's getting her amount of sleep because her bedtime is not a hard 7 30 or a hard eight o 'clock yeah i was able to adjust it easier because it's like an hour and a half window yeah no it makes sense it makes sense and you've been doing a great job with it and um there's gonna be a time where we get on here and we're like we're good yeah and we do i but here's what i gotta say i think we're good at that like three weeks ago we were like we are in a sleep regression and no one is sleeping and we're exhausted yeah but there's also like the funny i think the funny thing is is the travel fatigue is hitting us before anything it's like we're the ones that want to like get back and get back in in routine but yeah i feel fortunate i feel blessed and i'm sure there'll be a time very soon or maybe not so soon where like she hates being on airplanes and yeah and when she's crawling more like we're crawling right now this could be the end this could be the top it could be and i i told my friend that i just had her baby i'm like travel by you can because we're still able to but i think when they start crawling and when they start walking we're done yeah i don't think she's gonna want to travel at all because she's gonna want to run up and down that airplane yeah you're not gonna be able to Keep her in a seat.
53:25We've been lucky so far and we'll see how it goes over time. Two other things I want to say really quick. Okay. Number one, if you're traveling with the bottles and the pump parts and you forget soap, ask the hotel. Like this happened in Napa. I was like, I don't have any soap. They brought me a little dish with their dish soap in it. It was great. Washed everything with that. Second thing is we love By Heart Formula. I think we said that last episode. So we now combo feed sometimes. Yeah. By Heart has - I feel like there's going to be – this is something that we should talk more about on the next episode is the whole combo feeding thing.
53:57I love it, but I just want – Because we haven't talked about formula yet in a very long time. I don't think. Oh, yeah. I don't think. Okay. So I think that – I think she's 70 % breast milk, 30 % formula right now with these eight-ounce bottles that we've moved to. Let's save that for next week. Yeah, we'll save it. But I just want to say By Heart Makes Packets because let me tell you what Harrison and I were doing. And we were just traveling with the canisters. And think of a liquid IV packet. They put a four-ounce bottle in that. And we just take those things everywhere. Yeah. It's funny. Like, I don't think they existed.
54:30Did they exist when Tate was born? Or is it a new item? No, because Sydney sent them to us. I thought it was Sydney sent them. Like, four months ago and was like, look at this. And I was like, thank you. Game changer. So, I mean, that is just like absolutely love it. Okay. So, we're going to transition now into fail of the week. Okay. Which was yours. It's funny. Yeah. So things that I will not do with our baby again is take her to get a haircut with me. You called me when you left. You were just like, I can't do that anymore. You had to leave early. Disaster. The barber was amazing. And kind of mindset was like we were back and she's been in such a good mood lately that I was like, you know what?
55:17I think she'll enjoy her dime at the barbershop. And we get there. And the whole thing just turns out to be a disaster. We sit down. And I've got a mirror to my left, a mirror to my right. She's on my lap. And there's bright light. She is loving life. Because she's looking at the two mirrors. Can't get enough. Coo in. I'm like, this is brilliant. I may be able to do haircuts two, three times a month at this pace. This could be a thing for her. where things went very south, probably five to seven minutes in, where she got so excited that she started doing these jumpy things. So she doesn't want to sit anymore.
56:00She wants to do an assisted stand. And she wants to start jumping into me. Dive. These new things are diving. These little dives. And she does them really quick. And so she's doing these dives. And the hair, the barbers, her like – Scissors are cutting you. The scissors are getting moved because – You can't sit still. I'm like jerking. And so we're like timing the cuts based off of her – Diving. Potential like movements, which just – it was not a successful endeavor. and in all the moving we managed to keep her clear of the hair but my coat like you know the coat they put on you the the cover that just got fully turned around so I was fully covered in hair and like I never realized how effective of a job that cover did and how like that hair is just impossible to that to get out haircut hair is the worst so um you know we're here now so you can judge the haircut you can roast it but what did the barber say to you she said she's she didn't finish and she said you can come back tomorrow for free yeah i think the big i think we're kind of like here we like missed it um we like couldn't get the around the ears because we maybe could to chop my ears off but um i had to like drive home shirtless because uh my shirt was just covered in hair i didn't want to get in the car um yeah it was while she loved it and she was happy the two mirrors too fun the hair um the barber was an mvp they got a great tip but the reason She's not coming back to the barbershop.
57:56Also, I really wanted to do a joke where we did a fake cut off her hair. I brought home hair all excited, being like, oh, my God, this is Tate's first haircut. I wanted to film it. I wanted to put it on the internet. Those jokes aren't funny to me, though. I don't think that's funny. That, to me, isn't my kind of humor. You've done the haircut joke twice now. I'm never going to believe you. You're never giving her a first haircut without me. I know that. So I don't know what the deal is. But like the prank, it's not – I want to prank. I want to start doing pranks. I can't do pranks. You can't – Why I'm not into pranking with parenthood is it's the boy that cried wolf.
58:35I'm with you. There's going to be a time when like you call and say like, okay, there was a time where like you've dropped the milk. And I'm like, right. And it's like, no, I really did drop it. And it's like I don't believe you because like the joking. So that's why I banned joking. It is noteworthy, though, that my first time ever doing content around our whole parenting was me dropping the milk. You dropped the bottle and you're like, I don't know. It started with a parent fail. So this week's parent fail is no more babies at the barbershop. I think most parent fails will sound very obvious as they come out of your mouth.
59:16but we are dreamers and we think, yeah, we're dreamers and missed that one. What does dreamers have to do with that? I don't know. I just like, I thought that she would have a great time. I think the problem with barbershops now I'm thinking about it is there's mirrors everywhere and mirrors are the most fun thing on the planet. Like what we should really do in our playroom is a mirror wall. A mirror wall with rock clappers. No, a mirror wall with the best thing somebody on TikTok told me which is a little ballet bar in front of it, like a mini ballet bar. Oh my god Which is precious Okay So What?
59:50Things we DM'd We have a hard stop At five minutes Okay I have to pee Like I have to pee Like so bad Okay I have Like I have to go Sorry Sorry everyone Okay So what I'm gonna do Is I'm gonna do Things we DM'd With Alex not here Um Jewel is that okay? Oh she's not here Um Alright we're gonna do this
1:00:20hello all right so i'm gonna do things we dm'd without alex here is that okay jules yeah okay um all right so uh what i dm'd alex was something that was going super viral on twitter wow it is very weird to not have her in the room. And it was a tweet by this guy named Sahil. And the tweet was PSI. Oh, sorry, PSA. There's a guy named Sohan Perik, who works at three to four startups at the same time. He's been preying on Y Combinator companies and more. So he tweeted this about this guy and a whole bunch of companies then come forward that talk about stories of this of this Soham who's either worked there and done these kind of three, six, 12 week gigs.
1:01:19But long story short, this guy was running a racket on venture back companies working it three to four at a time was a master interviewer. So one common thing that all these companies are saying was there was never a better interviewer than Soham. And the reason why I shared this is because I thought it was a really funny story. And I also found there to be a huge amount of irony, which was like Silicon Valley loves to talk. um oh okay um hi welcome back alex so i just shared the dm about soham parik oh i'm i'm on my tools um so i just talked about the dm of soham parik who was the guy who would work who was working at multiple uh venture-backed startups at the same time is that illegal uh or they haven't outlawed that because they didn't think anybody would ever do it well i'm sure i assume it's in a lot of companies bylaws or like employment contracts sorry that you're not allowed to do that um but i was saying the reason why i shared is because i thought it was just an entertaining story but also i found it super ironic that like the whole thing out of the vcs and silicon valley is like ai is going to allow like one person to do 10 people's jobs because of efficiency and then like you have one person doing five people's jobs and they lose their minds being like let's blacklist this guy and uh it's like come on because they thought he was trading secrets or no i think they were just i think the pro the honest problem with or i think the problem with this in many ways was he was doing a shitty job so it's not like he was like working at three to four startups and doing an awesome job he like it's almost like i'm on mute i don't know how that happened i would just end up it's almost like he um became obsessed with getting the jobs oh yeah okay that's like different because it's cool if you're like this is a guy that was working five jobs doing kicking butt at all the jobs like that's different but it's like he wasn't doing a a job and like you had an obsession with getting the jobs i don't like it very much became it very much leaned out with i think the takeaway was con man is a master interviewer but following um like getting jobs is a huge underperformer yeah that is what it feels like the sentiment was on on Twitter.
1:04:06But Soham Parekh was the man of the week on Twitter, crook of the week. Oh, they have crooks of the week. Do they have – How is it? Oh, okay. So what I DM'd you was that TSA is no longer having us take off our shoes at the airport, which we encountered two days ago in Austin. We were leaving and the girl was like, you don't have to take your shoes off and we were like what and it reminded me of like okay so the reason to be tsa pre-check is obviously the lines and that line moves faster but a main reason that line moves faster is you don't have to take your shoes off and one thing that i've started doing because you're canadian and canadians can't get tsa pre-check is i'll go through the regular line I guess with you and Tate um ultimate family person but now that we don't have to take our shoes off in the regular line like the props of TSA what now I don't have to take my laptop out there like that's it no problem yeah yeah TSA is going to become a lot more unappealing with this whole no one's taking off their shoes because they used to always say you should get TSA pre-check you don't have to take your shoes off it's a big win win for travelers I'm glad they got safety to a place where where we can do that and was a big personal win for me because um i've run out of socks and i was traveling um yesterday without socks and so to not have to walk barefoot to the airport was uh was a huge win and uh yes i've ordered new socks on amazon and i got us an extra pair of socks.
1:05:48I took one because Harrison then took my one pair of socks that I had left. So I then took a pair of my mom's socks. So now we've got two pairs. We're back in the game. We got two pairs in the rotation. Bombas. I'm telling you, I got to get the ball. Like there is no bet. This is not an ad. They were an advertiser. I'm obsessed with the Bombas socks. They're a great sock. I do need to hold us accountable to time here. It is 1131. We are one minute late and need to sprint to the airport. Let's do it. So thank you very much for listening. Next week we will stay tuned for more house tours on the socials.

This week on Two Parents & A Podcast — we’re sharing our top 5 must-haves for traveling with a baby (under 12 months)! Tate’s officially been on a TON of flights, and we’re finally feeling like we have it down. From our new 20-minute buffer rule (the stroller ALWAYS sets off the alarm) to maintaining routine with a few key constants, this list is fully battle-tested after 3 straight weeks of travel (ps. yes, we are happy to be home).
We also talk about the playroom updates (spoiler: we might be going a little overboard, but it’s truly magical) and other home updates (how many times can I say Sherwin-Williams Pure White?? lol).
Plus, we revisit last week’s convo about the power of perspective—and unpack the difference between reframing and toxic positivity.
In Things We DMed Each Other: an overemployed remote worker with a wild secret, TSA FINALLY ending the shoe removal policy, and a quick “Fail of the Week” involving a barbershop mishap (s/o to the very patient barber— but also, drop your thoughts on Harrison’s half-finished haircut 😂).
WE LOVE YOU GUYS!
