In short

New year reset; traveling with friends/neighbors while parenting; childcare plans for baby #2 (rotating between two families/houses); airline miles vs choosing flights by time/price; nostalgia and food quality; New Year’s resolutions (especially phone reduction); babysitter etiquette for late pickups and communication; “technoference”/parental digital distraction; Illinois law for paid pumping breaks.

Guests (none)

This episode is hosted by Two Parents and a Podcast (Harrison, Jules, and “Jules”/“H” speaking). No guest speakers are interviewed in the transcript. They mention a future guest: Dr. Ari Brown (to discuss communication with toddlers).

Key claims

Parental phone distraction (“technoference”) can predict developmental delays; children need caregiver gaze during core interaction. Phone reduction goals: no phone before 8am, no phone at dinner, no phone in the bathroom, no social media in bed. Babysitters should be respected with timely communication; missing deadlines may warrant extra pay/tip. Illinois will require up to 30 minutes paid breaks to express breast milk starting Jan 1, 2026.

Notable examples

Skiing with neighbors’ kids; Peggy (Maria’s mom) as childcare; Heated Rivalry show; bagel disappointment after childhood; caviar vs breast milk question; babysitting horror-story TikToks about late returns without communication.

1:03Are you ready? Yes. Well, no, we had the Q &A. Yep. Second episode of the year. Who knows? First episode back in Austin. First episode back in ATX. You ready to start? Yes. My New Year's resolution is to keep my gum stuck to the top of my mouth the whole episode. Okay. I have a series of New Year's resolutions. And we're going to talk about New Year's in here. I'd love to. All right. Welcome back to another episode of Two Parents and a Podcast. guys we're back the new year has begun how's your energy levels well yeah okay so i always say there's like a lot of pressure first week of the year like all these chain blah blah blah i just you know what the christmas decorations are still up it's all good we're gonna get those down eventually i haven't unpacked my suitcases not mad about it like i'm just i didn't want to put so much landing pressure on myself um so my vibe is like my vibe is not to overwhelm myself with like all these things that need to be done right yes your vibe is go to the gym my gas tank is full on a scale of one to ten it's a ten like i the way that that the holiday shook out this year leaned very well to a reset and I was just yawning before that as ironic as it is but like my the the batteries are fully charged and I'm loving it so we traveled with our neighbors over the new year and I think you learn a lot about people when you travel with them and I would like to add a layer to that you learn a ton about people when you travel with them with kids yes I could travel with them forever.

2:50Well, I actually, what did you learn? I felt like traveling with them was literally an extension of our day to day. Exactly though. And that's the goal because you never know when you travel with somebody, like what if somebody's turned super type A and they need like a schedule or they're not that like, it's just nice. You're at meals. Like you split it. Um, we had, we had babysitters some nights. It's just like, it was just so go with the flow. Like they're, you know, we wanted to take, take skiing. They're like, let's take Winnie skiing. Like they were just down yeah i felt like it was very much a natural extension of of how our life looks in austin and i had a phenomenal time with them and i think one it's crazy that that's the first time we've ever traveled with them okay but here's what's even crazier yeah we only hung out with them halloween for the first time last year so it's only been about a year yeah yeah and i think that you really expedite things when you're in the same phase of life as somebody right then with kids it's really easy to to bond well it's funny our current setup reminds me a lot of college so like the other night um it was like a wednesday it was right before we left and it was a wednesday and they were at a holiday party and they were at a holiday party with a couple of our friends and one of um uh whatever i guess do we use names we use names tauntaun was at their house and texting me and she's like i'm at the neighbor's house with um like a bunch of people and i just like walked over said hi hung out for 30 minutes and then like went home and it reminded me so much of like college when like you know you just get a text everyone's like yeah we're in so-and-so's room or or in the um what do they call the oh yeah like we're in we're in so-and-so's dorm come over and like you go down a floor and you just like walk over like i walked over i was in you know like a some comfy sweats threw on my um no it's the best slippers and walked on over best setup in the world it's um yeah it's priceless to have a family that parents like you that travels like you and has kids your age like if and listen i always had a dream like we were on a ski trip with another family like that really meant a lot to me like i was like you know because i grew up going on ski trips with other families and it's like we were doing that yeah we did it but it was wild man like then you're on a ski trip with your family and like you're the mom and dad that's been happening yeah lugging them to the ski hill was like but you took them skiing you guys it was so cute and i want bubber to go like because we because you you grew up skiing yeah i skied for the first time around her age yeah which is so cool i didn't even know they made skis that little and so i want her to go back every year and be in ski school because her cousin parker's doing it and it's like she's paving the way and bubs is gonna do it too yeah i never would have thought they could do it if parker didn't do it like obviously i didn't but but you never you know that's so long ago and you never know your parents like mixing up a year or two and then parker skied literally at the same age parker's four so harrison's niece is four years old and like she now just like she's like i want to go skiing yeah and it's so cool to see so Bubz and Winnie they went skiing and it my heart like was throbbing I was like this is cuter than I ever thought possible they liked it they loved it um okay so we're back in Austin and the one of the questions I get all the time whenever I put up a question box is like what are you guys gonna do when baby number two comes and here's the thing the neighbors already have baby number two um it's a little boy and so we've hired maria's mom harrison's on the phone no he's just messing with you oh so we i was like who are you taking a phone call from we've hired maria's mom peggy and she's gonna watch the little boys um when we met peggy for the first time i think maria is god's gift to earth and then i think maria is god's gift to earth 2.0 like this woman they are truly like they are so sweet yeah they're so like the way that they just embrace the the kids and calm them and um and take care of them and have fun with them it's really really special it's really special so the first time we ever met peggy we were like all right let's see the vibe and like we just all looked at each other and we were like that is the best motherly vibe ever and of course she is because she she raised maria so we really view Maria and her family as an extension of our family and the neighbor's family too um so so excited about Peggy couldn't have worked out better um and so now the question is once we have our little man here in the belly you know when are we gonna start with Peggy that we don't know because with Tate we had her for four months at home and then we were like okay we're ready to get back to work get back in the swing of things.

7:55So I think every postpartum is going to be different. I don't want to set a timeline to it. I don't want to say it's going to be two months of us in the newborn bubble and then we'll have Peggy start going back and forth between our house and the neighbor's house. I don't know yet. But all I know is we have it lined up when it's ready. But the beauty of it, you guys, is Peggy's already started with the neighbors. And so she'll just cross over to us whenever the time's ready. We have a lot of flexibility in that, which is awesome. And I got to give it to Maria, too, because we're really watching Tate and Winnie evolve right now.

8:26You know, they started with tummy time. Like this time last year, they were like doing tummy time. And yesterday, Maria took them to a story time. Then they had a picnic outside in the park together. Picnic in El Parque. Like, you know, with there's a potos on and they're like running around. Like, it's really cute watching her understand the developmental stages and like taking them to do things. Yeah, it's been a pleasure to watch. And so Peggy will do the same thing with these little boys. So that's the child care plan. And the other thing, I'm trying to think, is there anything else I'm missing?

9:04We just, I think the main question. Oh, Jules has her hand up. I have a question. Are all four babies going to be in one house and it's going to flip back and forth? Or are the, it's going to be two and two and they're going to flip back and forth? I think rotating, but I don't know if a decision has been made. So a decision has not been made. I think my vote is going to be there's always a kid at the house five days a week. Yeah, and I think I would love that. Especially, like, guys, I think we're getting a new office space, which is another new year development. So if we get that, then we can be out of the house a lot.

9:39It's hard to work from home with four kids there. Totally. And two other adults. But I would love to have. We don't know yet, but I would love to have two quiet days. I would also love to have somebody there the whole time. So what we'll do is, and this is how it usually works with the neighbors, like we'll go pick up Tate today at 5. We'll sit, we'll talk to him about it, and we'll probably come to a decision. Well, I thought of that today because three kids are at their house. But here's the other thing. You do have to take, how are we going to, like today we get up and we walk Tate to the neighbor's house, but tomorrow they bring Winnie to our house, and we don't do anything because Tate stays there and Maria comes to our house.

10:18What do you mean? Well, like... You just take two. So then every day you're taking a kid. Yeah. Yeah, which is fine, obviously. It's a five-second walk. Jules? Oh, you're just switching which kid it is. Yeah. What if you take the wrong kid one day? I don't know. We're lucky that it's four houses. Like, that's just easy enough. Bubber's starting to want to walk. Yeah. Okay. Cute. So that's the skinny on the childcare situation, but how long we'll have this baby around the house? Don't know until Peggy starts with him. All right. Good. You guys, this is a dog loving podcast just because we don't have a dog.

11:03We've got family dogs. Jules and P have dogs. We love our dogs on this pod, which is why we want to talk to you about Ollie dog food. You got to make the switch to Ollie. It's as simple as that. 12:37I think picking your airline based off of, well, let me rephrase that. I think picking your flight based off of airline is ridiculous. I'm completely out on that. I think that you got to pick your airline based off flight time. Pick your flight based off of flight time, not airline. So you're saying as opposed to being loyal to one airline and accumulating points, you would rather take convenient flight times. Yes. You've now had me on the point program for almost two years. And I just don't get it. You've got nothing to show for it. I've got nothing to show for it. And the best example is when we flew back, we flew back United.

13:16We're not a United family. Had we flown back American, and I know I got some pushback on this from you, we would land it two hours later. We got better flight times, better connecting. and like I'm just I'm fully team pick the best flight time and the best price. Now, you know, this is what I'm going to say, though, like you're you're going to be too spread thin. So in this case, the United flight time was significantly better. That's when I'm like, OK, fine, go United. But if you're flying to New York and there's a bunch of flight times like, yeah, I'm going American because I have American points.

13:54I have American status and I'm more likely to get upgraded. But I think like if everything needs to be equal, like because New York's a great example. Like I would much rather fly into Newark than I would JFK. Listen, I think in New York you're going to an Uber. It's a mess anyways, like whatever for the most part. I would rather fly my known airline. yeah I think that it is wasted effort like just fully wasted effort yeah I think you just think the point system is flawed and like you put all this effort into it you don't get much to show up for it yeah that's exactly the take it's like the effort to reward ratio is not it for me the only time the first time I went to Paris I thought it was so cool I could book round trip all on points I was like this is awesome and that's great but how many years did that's great how many years did it take me to get there i don't know yeah yeah like but what what i never do is cash in on the points that's the thing you got to do you got to say every time i hit 300 000 points i'm going to book a trip or something like that but then then you do kind of spend three years accumulating points to maybe and i think like you're probably are you paying more for that airline and what's the time that you're like taking the inefficient flights.

15:17I just think. So you're saying forget it. But what you are doing though, you do have logins for all airlines. I'm logging in for all airlines. I'm good with that. That's, I can meet in the middle there. Honestly, the reason why I'm doing that is because it makes buying the Wi-Fi on the flights easier. It honestly does. Yeah. Yes, buying the Wi-Fi on the flights. We've become really spoiled with Wi-Fi on flights. Like on the way back, we had a four hour flight and you couldn't download anything. That was tough. It was tough. couldn't listen to a podcast yeah they didn't do any audio streaming it was tough times we were almost a raw dog but it wasn't yeah i got i fly frontier so do they have wi-fi on frontier no wi-fi yeah no frontiers no wi-fi yeah they're just not doing it okay um the other thing you noticed when we were in canada was you so the canadians are mad at me a little bit oh please share why i make videos saying we're in canada and they're like canada's a whole country nobody says i'm in the united states like you say i'm in new york city so can you please say i'm in vancouver i don't know if i agree with this and a lot and then people get in there like i don't agree as a canadian we'd often say we're going down to the states okay they just would like me to specify what do you mean canada it's a whole country okay yeah so they're not really mad like they're not mad at me they're just kind of like well hold on now stop saying Canada save Vancouver so I kind of see it both ways um Harrison grew up and I think this happens a lot in life with these bagels that he swore by he's like they're the best bagels on the planet so he door dashes them one day and he gets his bagels and he tried them and the look on his face was just sheer disappointment he's like I remember these being 10 times better than they are and that's a tale as old as time with childhood it happened to me too with the food court at the mall I used to think it was the most magical place on the planet and you could sit in these cars that were booths and then I went back in college and I was like this is what I loved yeah yeah it's it's an amazing dynamic of these things that like you thought were world-class growing up and then you look back on it and you totally missed the mark but then on the other end And it's amazing when like you grow up and you like things and then you go back and they're even better than you remember.

17:42So like Sushi Village and Whistler. Like I remember growing up. I like going to Sushi Village. We go all the time. Like now when I go back, that to me is as good of a restaurant. That's as good as a restaurant gets in a ski town. Like you go to Whistler, you got to have a night at Sushi Village. Like it's fun. The food's good. It's well priced. It's a vibe. But as a kid, you're like, this is boring. As a kid, it was good, but I didn't realize it's better than I. It's like whenever you take a sip of your parents' wine or beer whenever you're in high school and you're like, ew, who would drink that?

18:15And now I'm like, I love the taste of wine. Like you grow up and you're like, okay. But a reverse of this is I used to think Shogun's in Oklahoma City, this hibachi restaurant, you could not beat it. It was truly like you were at a magic show. And then you go back in college and you're like, This was the restaurant I wanted to go to for birthdays. What about Aishin's? Aishin's did a flip for me. I think Aishin's is a fried chicken spot in Oklahoma City. Well, it's in Okarchi. I used to like it kind of. The other day, I was craving it. Yeah. I think Aishin's is, as I've said it before, it's one of my top three restaurants ever.

18:57Now, but the theme here, though, is good food is winning in the end. I think it's good food and good vibe. wins. I think the... Like, I used to think there's this Disney store, there's the Disney store in the mall. I truly used to think it was the equivalent of, like, hitting the lottery. Build-a-bear. But I think the... Like, you're talking about things targeted for kids, and I'm not. I'm saying, like... But Sushi Village is not targeted towards kids. It's just good, solid food with a good restaurant. So when you're a kid, you're kind of like, why am I here? No, I'm not talking as a kid. I'm talking in high school.

19:37Oh. Yeah. I think we're kind of saying different things right now. I guess so. Point being, also though, I think this. I think when you're young, like when you're in high school, you haven't seen the world. You don't have a ton of bagels. You don't have a ton of context to draw. And so then you go out, you see the world. You live in Hong Kong for five years. You live in New York, San Francisco. You go back and you're like, you know what? I've had better bagels. Or. The place got worse. The place got better. Or worse. Or like the sushi village or the Aishans. Yeah, maybe their food improved. That's definitely not what I'm saying.

20:12Why am I missing the point completely? Jules, do you understand my point? I don't know. You guys have been all over the place. I think nostalgia is oftentimes different at the moment than when you go back. Love it. Am I not getting it at all?

20:34well are am I yeah all I'm saying is that is that it is that it's interesting to look back at the restaurants that I grew up and I underappreciated versus overappreciated plain and simple okay and how they flip-flopped is this on par I used to think oatmeal with brown sugar and toast was the best meal on the planet then I had it you know in my first trimester and it was like okay am i getting it or not i don't know i don't even know if i get it anymore oh no oh no i just couldn't believe the bagels that i loved growing up were so bad well i just think that that unless we draw some other i didn't want to be a negative nancy and so i wanted to call out some things that were better growing up i guess that's it you're not being a negative nancy i think a lot of people have that same experience okay I got one I used to think that the French toast sticks at Sonic were elite they're not very good but maybe Sonic got worse no shade to Sonic I love Sonic I'm just saying especially with the pump of vanilla but if you add in if you go get the food it tastes a little different than it did in high school or my palate's evolved I doubt it's that okay I've lost Harrison okay Harrison is gonna quit the podcast um New Year's resolutions Harrison made his last night what's your beef with New Year's resolutions hold on a lot of people speaking I don't I'll tell you this in a second we watched heated rivalry last night a Jules recommendation we started watching it I also have seen it off we just were like it's okay so I've seen two influencers today I can't remember who they were and they're just like if you don't like heated rivalry, don't talk to me.

22:25And I'm like, wait, hold on. We didn't really like it. Don't talk to me. It's like a whole topic online. Like it's the best show that I've seen in years. In years. Okay. So we got to keep watching. You have to keep watching it. You have to make it to the end. We also were watching it like 1 a.m. Cause we're so jet lagged. Like we need to get on the right time zone. I would say, I think they nailed the Russian character. I thought the Russian character was so good. I thought the Canadian character was like, was not as good. He's Canadian. in real life. That's cool. Where do you think the Russian kids from?

22:57Russia. Don't care because that's the power of acting, Jules. Yeah, where do you think he's from? Don't tell us. Russia? Texas. Oh, really? Yeah. Why would you tell us? Because it makes the show better knowing he's from Texas. I thought he was so, so good. I do, like, just wish they could use the real events. So, like, I wish that they could use, like, Like the, you know that hockey tournament that they're referencing at the beginning? Oh, yeah. Like I wish they could just like call it the World Juniors. The World Juniors. And I wish that they could like use the NHL team logos. Well, you could read the books.

23:32They call it the World Juniors in the books. Do they really? They do. Yeah. And I did like though that the timing of everything was directionally on. Yeah. Which is, okay, okay. So we'll keep watching. Yeah. Can I say one thing that wasn't like that? And then we're going to New Year's resolutions, yes. Well, I don't know the last time that someone has been captain of Canada at back-to-back World Juniors. I don't know if that's ever happened. Normally, you have a new captain every year. Well, he's the best. They're the two best. The best and the best. Let's see. Was it Sidney? Was Sidney Crosby captain's back-to-back years?

24:12He's loosely based on Sidney Crosby. Sidney Crosby and Alex Ovechkin? Yeah, loosely. Are they speculated to be lovers? No, no, no. Well, how... It's like fan fiction. Okay, I like this. Oh, man. Let's keep watching it. I lost my entire break. Well, no, the second... The entire break. I've been watching Heated Rivalry since it came out on Thanksgiving. Friday after Thanksgiving. But it's only six episodes. Yeah, it came out on Friday after Thanksgiving. Who was the influencer? I watched it 8 a.m. Friday after Thanksgiving. Somebody else is on your page today and that's why I wanted to talk about it because I was like, oh I'm excited.

27:23Monday. But I'm more so saying resolutions. Like I'm going to go to the gym. I think that sometimes it's like these grand gestures of like, I'm going to go to the gym four times a week all year. And then, you know, the third week of January hits and maybe you can't go four times. Like I just, I think that it's a little intense, the goal making. So I just want to see more snack size changes, I guess. like I love an intention set but I think it's like um I'm gonna post a video every day of 2026 it's like you might not but like try to post a video once a week so you're you're into realistic new year's resolutions yes I'm not into these like grand too hard to hold on to Yes.

28:13Okay. I want some realism in there. That lands. But I think that with a goal, like if you don't – that's why I like setting them in goal form and then giving yourself a grade out of 10 at the end of the year. Which I think is really good. Because then you get to see, am I overshooting my goals or am I undershooting my goals? I'm going to send a nice text every day for the year. It's like, no, but like do have a reminder go off once a week to send a nice text. That could be cool. I did a couple things with my goals this year. Okay, talk us through. The first is to keep them top of mind. I added a widget to the homepage of my laptop, which has my goals written down.

28:55Okay, now I'm going to make an edit here. Yes. If you don't mind. Do you mind? Let's hear it. So I used to have this. I used to have the widget with the post-it. Yes. I think one thing that's helpful is every week to move it or every week to go back in and retype it. But otherwise, you take for granted it being there and you just are like, yeah, I know what it says. Okay, we'll see because I've never done that before. I normally just kept them in a notion doc. I would just say, you know, refresh it somehow. Change the color of it. Okay, we'll see. Every Monday, read it to yourself. I think the consistent reminder of it will hopefully keep me motivated.

29:27You're the best goal setter, goal tracker I know. I can fade particularly on the health goals. But I created a new category of goal this year. Which is? focused on phone reduction. I'm all for this. Explain it to us. I'm looking to reduce the time. I'm looking to reduce the amount of time I'm spending on my phone. Screen time reduction. Okay. I'm doing three things. I've set three goals. Okay. Number one, no phone before 8am. Love that because they always say you wouldn't wake up and let a thousand people in your room. So why would you wake up and open your phone? The phone is going to stay upstairs until 8am.

30:04Yes. So we can have quality time in the morning as a family with bubs. Mine also stays up there, so I'm in. Okay. Number two, dinner, no phone at dinner. The phone at dinner is either in your jacket pocket or in a purse, not on the table or in your pen pocket. And if we're at home? If we're at home. On the island, if we're at the table? Like that. And we've been doing this dinner thing for the past couple weeks, and I've loved it. I've been doing that morning thing for the past couple weeks and I love that. But now I'm like, I'm putting pen to paper on it because I don't want to have any wiggle room on it.

30:44Here's my other thing. When you go to the bathroom, if we're out at a restaurant and you get up and you go to the bathroom, I love somebody to leave their phone. Okay, no. I'm actually going to take it to another level. Okay. I'm going to add a new goal. No phone in the bathroom. That's what I'm saying. You leave your phone. No, ever. You're saying when you're at dinner and you go to the bathroom, don't leave it? You're saying in general. I'm saying when I go to the bathroom now, I'm not going to bring my phone. Well, that is kind of a small social media trend. It's like this bathroom scrolling.

31:14You're in there for five, six minutes. You don't even know it. And then the fourth phone goal is no social media in bed. Oh, no doom scrolling in bed. That's such a good one, H. Yeah. What are you going to do instead? I'm going to doom scroll on my laptop. That's cheating. what are you really gonna do um I think like the reason why I created that is to force myself to find what else I will do so I don't have the answer to that okay maybe it's a book yeah or listen to a podcast that's a good one I actually don't think it'll be a book I struggle reading yeah you know what makes you tired reading yeah it's a really good way they say like if you wake up in the middle of the night grab a book not your phone so i'm very focused on phone reduction for this year and now those are four things that i want to do and um please hold me accountable to them it's something that i can hold you accountable to because i have we talked about secondhand smoke on here yes yeah last week the second hand so secondhand smoke if you're if you didn't hear this part it's when the person you know if the person beside you smoking you're inhaling smoke same thing with technology shout out to our friend maggie for saying this she was like when somebody's on their phone it's like secondhand smoke you're just like you know they're not present they're tapped out mentally they're scrolling so like it just it affects you it's actually one of the things we dm'd each other this week what is it called techno techno fearance techno appearance and we'll talk more about it when we get to the things we dm part but basically it's saying you know we all we talk about how screen time can be bad for kids but what else is bad for kids is if they're like trying to play with you and talk to mom and dad and you're just on your phone the whole time sort of saying like I'm prioritizing my phone and that's like the massive driver of of me focusing on phone reduction is like obviously is the effects on me but two it's like what is Bob's gonna see and I don't want her to see me addicted to my phone and like the phone is amazing like there's so much exciting things to do on there well but so one thing that we so we are gonna have Dr.

33:23Ari Brown back on the podcast on Monday and we're going to be talking to her about communication with toddlers right and one thing she talks about chapter three in her book and it's like talking to toddlers you know do toddlers understand the word no but one thing in it is so babies understand toddlers understand a lot more than they can say out loud so bubs for example if she wants a snack she'll come over she'll grab your hand and she'll walk you to the snack area if she wants to go outside she comes over she grabs your hand she walks you to her zapatos and she holds up her zapatos um if you're on your phone and totally and and whenever you get their cue right they build trust and they and then they get confidence because they're like I was able to explain that right if she's pointing at her agua then you take her over there and you say I think you might want your agua right so then they think oh my gosh my mom and my dad understand me if you're on your phone totally tapped out you're gonna miss those cues and I think developmentally for them that's hard makes a lot of sense yeah so it's good because she's starting to point a lot or say words that aren't you know she doesn't say um I want my water but agua and if you don't catch that agua and so it's it's a pretty cute stage right now so anyways we're going to talk to Dr.

34:43Ari Brown about all that um on Monday okay let's go to oh one more thing on the new year's resolution you sent this couples who work out together are 600 times 600 percent more likely to keep working out to stick to their fitness goals okay couples who work out together are 600 percent more likely to stick to their fitness goals yes 600 percent yeah it's um it's an amazing stat it it it lands with me because like obviously like we're not working out together now and and totally understand why um but pre uh pregnancy and and postpartum like we worked out a lot together and i loved it and i felt like that kept um like that kept me up and motivated and and going and um when you want to start working out together again i am here and ready for the call obviously on on your time but like i i do love working out with you and i totally get why we're not doing it right now um no we used to do berries together and that was really fun um well we actually worked this is funny we worked ever since we first met we worked out together yeah yeah do um uh army yeah we would go in new york we would go work out together we went and we always went in la yep so okay so we've always worked out together um but after i had bubberator we did we got about three four months after whenever i wanted to start working out we would go to berries together and do you know what i liked about that i felt like i couldn't do a lot of the workouts and I felt really good having you in the class and I also it felt good to get my heart rate up but I and then if I was going you didn't want to miss and vice versa um totally but one yeah right now I'm just in this phase I think a lot of pregnant people if you're listening you'll get this this morning so yesterday morning I got up I could walk 30 minutes on the treadmill this morning I made it seven minutes I was dizzy so I just sat down and stretched and it's why I'm like afraid to go to a workout class right now because i'm just like what if it's not my day you're doing a phenomenal job well actually the pilates studio near our house uh the owner just texted me homebody she said we added a prenatal class really 3 p.m on sundays well so i gave you a credit come try it out i thought i would like to do that so maybe i'll do that nice yeah because you lay down the whole time it's nice but yeah i i i think the stats probably really accurate 600 100%.

37:23Yeah, I love working out with you. Yeah, I quite like it too. Okay, I would like to now move to, I'm going to pull up my Notion doc because I just want to touch on this. Okay, what do we touch on? I think you want to order a macchiato. Harrison and I's coffee orders have been changing. We've been getting cappuccinos. Yes, even though I was shunned for getting a cappuccino in Vietnam once by Frederick. Why did you get shunned for getting a cappuccino? I've told this story before. It's a girl drink? I was told that I'm only allowed to drink black coffee. Oh. No, okay. So a cappuccino, do you know what it is?

38:07A third espresso, a third steamed milk, a third of faux milk. Okay. Okay. A latte, one shot of espresso, eight to ten ounces of steamed milk. So it's a lot more milk, basically, okay? Yeah. A flat white, which is one shot of espresso, four ounces of steamed milk. So not a bad idea, but this is what I think we want. Bang for your buck. It's a macchiato. It's one shot of espresso with a splash of milk foam. That's what we want. I don't think that's going to be enough milk. They all have one shot of espresso. The only thing that varies is the amount of milk in it. I have a chart for your viewing purposes.

38:54Yeah, I think that for me... I think I'm going macchiato. They got too milky for you. The flat white is it for me. No, I love a cappuccino. I know you. I'm just, I'm out on lattes. One shot of espresso. Okay, the cappuccino, the ratio here looks off. So your problem is what you're ordering right now has too much milk. It's just like so milky. Lattes. Yeah. You're looking for less milk. I'm looking for less milk. I love a shot of espresso. It's just you drink it so fast. So what has more milk, a cappuccino or a flat white? Well, in this, it's saying... Well, it says a third and four ounces. So is it...

39:39Well, okay. So they have the same amount of... They both have one shot of espresso. So the only thing is the cappuccino is steamed milk plus foamed milk versus the flat white is just steamed milk. Yeah. Then I think cappuccino is perfect for me. Okay. All right. Well, I just I think that maybe I just think we could try a flat white and see what happens. Love it. Or a macchiato. Just because I'm looking at mine doesn't mean you got to look at yours. Okay. That's quince.com slash Alex to get free shipping and 365-day returns. quince.com slash alex so i came home new year's eve and the babysitter was like oh my gosh i can't believe like you're on time and i was like what like what how would i not be on time and she was like you would be surprised how many people i babysit for that just like come home so late so much later than they told me and i was like oh i mean they just you were available hotel eight so like i'm here i was home at like 7 30 so i posted a tiktok and i was like tell if this girl's saying it i bet there's a lot of horror stories so i was like i want to hear from people so the first person says i would say five percent of parents come home on time and that had like 8 000 likes which means wow a lot of people agree yeah okay number two if it's 3 a.m and the parents said 9 p.m i'm calling the cops yeah i mean that makes sense to me and that's further than i would have thought i would have thought if they said they'd be home at 9 and they're not home at 12 they'd call the cops see to me it's simple if you're gonna be if we're 30 minutes late you're gonna text message like hey we're running 30 minutes late yeah so if you're gonna be six hours late.

42:25We need text messages. We need, we need some communication. I think it's, there's just like, it is so off base. Yeah. Okay. Another one. I babysat for a single mom going on a first date. She didn't come home until 10 AM the next date. Sorry. I'm going to re-say that. I babysat for a single mom going on a first date. She didn't come home until 10 AM the next day with her date in tow. The guy wrote me a thousand dollar check, but neither of them acknowledged the situation. i said nice payday but like so the lady just like the babysitter slept at the house yeah but what's crazy to me is like i would be freaking out i'd be like is the mom okay yeah was it a bad date what happened like i'd be freaking out yeah i i mean that is a lot of responsibility i was scheduled until 10 p.m and the clock hit 1 a.m and a family member finally called and said the parents had been arrested which is what i would assume i'd be like yeah yeah i figured um in the 80s my parents found me seven years old and my brother five years old locked in the basement and the babysitter hanging out upstairs with her boyfriend they hired her again they said that we seemed totally happy and she hashtagged like gin y or something i i think that that's but there were so many of just like they just came home really drunk like parents just went out they went out till 3 4 a.m they didn't communicate and they just came home and people were like how are you not like calling the cops i would be so scared that if we came home late without any form of communication and approval that like they would leave totally and that's that's that's where i got a hand into all these babysitters none of them left yeah um one girl commented i didn't write this one down but the mom wasn't answering and the mom was late and the baby was sick.

44:22So she called her mom because she was in high school and her mom came over to help her. And when the parents got home, they were really drunk and they were mad her mom was there. And everyone was like, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa. Your mom is the hero here. Yeah, you got to be like respectful of people's time. So here's my question for you. Okay. Which etiquette with babysitters, we already know how you feel about this. If you're going to be late, you absolutely text. Well, you need to ask approval to be late. But let's say it's out of your control. Like, I don't know. You're in horrible traffic. You can't get there and you have to be 20 minutes late.

44:58Okay. Like you are simply 20 minutes late. 20 minutes I understand. Yeah. You're at a business meeting. You can't leave. Like, I don't know. Things happen. You texted the girl nine, but you thought you said 10 and you're just an hour away. Like you have to play these scenarios that were like, I can't get there. okay and she's like but i had dinner plans at nine you gotta i that's when i think you gotta say like i will pay you extra to stay okay what's the question my question is um does the rate go up if you're late per hour 100 so let's say they're 20 an hour and you are two hours late Well, I think it's much more so like what is the context?

45:49Well, the real thing here is a lot of babysitters are like, don't give me an end time because I've carved out my night anyways. So be home at a reasonable time. Give me some heads up. Yeah. To me, if it's that, then it's the normal rate. I think that when it changes, it's like if they say, hey, because sometimes our babysitters will say they need to leave at, let's say, 7 or 8. Right. And at that time, we are making sure that we are home. I think if you miss a deadline they give you, then, oh, yeah, the payment goes up big time. Because sometimes you talk to them. I think you probably need to give them a flat cash bonus.

46:26I agree. sometimes you talk to them and they're like you know I think we'll be on around 10 they're like I got nothing going on like just come on when you're and then you know and I actually go as far as saying I don't think we're I think we do this but like I think that we can be even more intentional about doing this is like being very clear about hey do you have a hard stop at 9 do you have a hard stop at 8 or like are you open and that way like we can make sure we're planning totally accordingly because like I am not supportive of of you know not being respectful people's time well i i do think that we need to clarify this so we've never been late without approval without being like hey can you stay an extra 30 minutes to an hour and they're like yeah or no we can't um but i do think if you miss the deadline um it yeah what do you think i think the rate goes up or you do a tip like a lot of people tip an extra hour if you can.

47:23Yeah, I think context matters though. Yeah, I definitely agree that context matters. But okay, and then let me ask you this. Do you think food in the house, any food you have in the house goes to the babysitter? 100%. I do too. And then do you think if they make more of a mess, they should clean up that mess? 100%. I agree. Okay. Just some babysitter thoughts that I wanted to get out. Okay, things we DM. Now we're going to get into our technoference. Okay. Okay, parental digital distraction is now a leading predictor of developmental delays in children. So stop worrying about your children's screen time and look at yours.

48:04I think this is really good. Your child's brain needs your gaze to wire itself for emotional regulation, language, and focus. I totally see this. When the gaze is fixed on a smartphone, the biological loop is broken. You don't have to be off your phone 24-7, but during core interaction, meals, playtime, and bed, your focus presence is the most powerful brain-building tool in the world. And this goes in line with what I was saying earlier of at this age when they're developing, they're doing a lot of what we're doing. So I've noticed I started taking bubs to the bathroom with me on the airplane because it's a way to get her out of her seat.

48:43When I sit down on the toilet, she started sitting down on the floor. it's the cutest thing on the planet and she just looks up at me and i'm like yeah we're both going to the bathroom i guess like she has no concept she just knows when we go in that little room that's what we do and so she's like she's starting to give her cues too like okay when she wants out of her sleep sack she started pulling on it yeah like she doesn't have the words to say i don't want to go to sleep right now she just has she just knows enough to pull on it and if you miss that cue that's hard for her to to enhance her development totally and like that's why we need to lead from the front and it's part of why i made the new section of my goals this year around like phone reduction because i realize how much we collectively as society are on our phones how much i'm on my phone like i want to reduce that so i'm setting the best example as i'm setting the best example possible for for her yeah so all this lines up and like don't get me wrong obviously sometimes I'm like making a tick tock or something that's my job but I try to do that as like fast furious put my phone down I'll edit it later like being on my phone in front of her I notice it just takes you out of the room totally like your brain is like easier said than done like totally but it's just something to note easier it's good to know this like as parents I think we can be like okay mealtime we put our phone up we engage that's really good for her like I think just us explaining this yeah i like as i said lines up you know every time i hear statistics on this i'm glad that it reinforces like our um us putting our best efforts forward on the example we set yeah for them um paid okay this is the next one paid pumping breaks start for moms in illinois on january 1st 2026 amazing a new law is an effect that will require employers to provide up to 30 minutes of paid break for employees to express breast milk.

50:38I could not love something more. Yeah, let's get this nationwide. Love it. I think you should get this nationwide. I also, in my mind, I would have liked to have thought that it already existed, like that you could just go pump. But I think having it, it's required for the first year postpartum. I think having it built in is a beautiful thing because as we saw, we learned a lot of formula companies will lobby to have shorter maternity leave. Was it Nestle? It was Nestle was our largest defender of that, right? I think this is a really cool law that pushes back on that and just gives the mom like, hey, you do have 30 minutes to go pump.

51:22Yeah, as a society, whether it's from the top down or the bottom up, I think we want to be doing everything we can to make lives for moms as easy as possible. I never even thought about this, but I think it's a beautiful thing. Good job, Illinois. Hopefully we can do it too. Okay, this week I learned. What did we learn this week? Is eating caviar for adults kind of like breast milk for babies? Please share. The comparison comes from the fact that caviar and breast milk share a rare combination of nutrients like DHA, choline, and fat soluble vitamins that support brain and nervous system health.

52:02Caviar is the only food other than breast milk that has this combo. Do you know what it reminds me of? You know they call breast milk liquid gold? Oh, wow. Yeah, and then you've got caviar, which is obviously like a high-priced food. And so it's like, wow, the premium things in life. What a stat. Like if we're going to compare breast milk to something, I'm glad it's caviar as a breast milk producer. Sometimes in my life, you know? Yeah. Because that stuff. I did not know. I mean, that's kind of cool. I did see eating caviar when pregnant is apparently good for the baby's brain health. I feel like choline is one of those things that they say is oh we talked about this yeah choline is good for yeah okay and then those nutrients don't stop mattering after you're a baby in adults they support cognitive function cell integrity and inflammation regulation rather than rapid growth and development how do we get like a lesser priced caviar so we can start implementing it.

53:06That's why caviar is often called a super food for adults. It's extremely nutrient dense, delivering concentrated omega threes, B vitamins and antioxidants in small servings. Why is caviar so expensive? Is it a supply and demand situation? I'm not sure. I feel like I used to know that. I think it only comes. I actually, I don't know. I definitely used to know this though it's expensive because it takes 10 to 20 years for females to produce roe caviar yeah well there's a scarcity of wild sturgeon as well okay 10 to 20 years to produce caviar um well guys if you happen upon some caviar do feel free to indulge in it where did i recently see caviar oh it was at the hanukkah party that we went to at our friend's house and I wanted I wanted to eat a lot of it but if you know I always feel bad putting a lot on because you know it's a high quality food so I was I was going bare on it um okay well we I think that kind of like does it for today we can wrap up there my dear well we are back we're gonna end on a caviar breast milk note um I yeah you guys welcome back you're probably back in the grind of things as are we we've got a nursery to do we've got a bunch of rooms to move around we got a whole house project happening so keep you posted on that um and we love you guys thank you for listening thanks for listening to another episode of two parents in a podcast powered by just media house if you enjoyed the show don't forget to like subscribe comment rate and review stay connected on Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, and Facebook at Two Parents and a Pod.

This week on Two Parents & A Podcast — we’re back in ATX and easing into 2026 (our christmas decorations are still up). We kick it off by talking about why traveling with friends (especially with kids) is the ultimate compatibility test, how wild it is that a one-year-old can actually ski (like WHAT), and why our current neighborhood setup feels like college (in the best way!!!).

Then we get into the thing everyone keeps asking: our childcare plan for baby #2. We talk about Maria’s mom (Peggy!! our angel), how the cross-house setup actually works, and what we’re looking forward to most with this set up!

Then we spiral into airline-mile skepticism, childhood “world-class” foods that absolutely do not hold up, and our early thoughts on Heated Rivalry (NOTE FROM JULES: it’s 9pm wednesday night and they’ve texted me that they’ve already changed their minds). Alex explains her beef with dramatic New Year’s resolutions, and Harrison shares the four phone-reduction rules he’s committing to in 2026 — no phone before 8am, no phone at dinner, no phone in the bathroom, and no doom-scrolling in bed.

We also talk couples who work out together, our current coffee-order identity crisis, babysitter etiquette (and the horror stories you sent in), “technoference” and how parental phone habits affect toddlers, Illinois’ new paid pumping-break law, and whether caviar really is “breast milk for adults”????

LOVE YOU GUYS and thanks for listening!
