In short
Two Parents in a Podcast Q&A covering: investing as a couple (joint Robinhood + ETF vs single stocks), when to pierce a child’s ears (AAP suggests around age 8), parenting/emotions after a playground push (toddler “goldfish memory” vs future hurt), planning a trip to the US Open (Honey Deuce drinks, caviar chicken tenders, hotel cancellation logistics), building neighbor friendships (front-porch culture, walkability, small lots), and marriage prioritization (intentional date nights, phone-free bonding).
Guests
No guest interviewees in this transcript; it’s the hosts (Dave Portnoy intro; then Jules and Alex/Harrison referenced as co-hosts/partners).
Key claims
- Joint investing: use Robinhood’s joint investing account with auto-deposits; keep 80–90% in ETFs, 10–20% in single stocks for learning/conversation.
- Ear piercing: wait until the child can manage aftercare independently; AAP commonly cited around age 8 to reduce infection risk.
- Marriage: don’t wait—schedule date nights/alone time; avoid passive scrolling together.
Notable examples
- US Open “Honey Deuce” vodka-based honeydew drink shaped like tennis balls.
- “Caviar top” chicken tenders discussed with a “girl math” plan to buy a $100 box.
- Neighbor bonding via porch culture and small-lot walkability; birthday popsicle gift for a diagonal neighbor (“Kiki”).

1:34Jules:Okay. Welcome back to another episode of Two Parents in a Podcast. Happy Friday. Happy Friday. Jules, your hair looks nice. Oh, thank you. I told you I stopped using conditioner. And is it? What's why? I just think it looks better. i think it looks shinier he told me that too i wonder what the conditioner was doing to it i don't know but here i am i got the um so i went over to hannah chody's house this past weekend she has i don't know why i didn't take a photo of it maybe she can send a photo of it for this a full cabinet you open up the top drawers the middle drawers and the bottom like they're not drawers they're cabinets cabinets on top drawers in the middle cabinets on the bottom i'm not kidding you it's better than a sephora of all the pr she gets it's you your jaw would be on the floor nick and i were like are you kidding me this is incredible hair care lips she gave me a lip combo and i took some k18 nice it was it was my jaw i was shocked i was like i've got to come over here more often bronze i mean anything you can name for makeup over your head all right over my head If you would have seen it, you'd be like, whoa.
2:46I was with you when we were talking about conditioner. I know what that is.
2:50Jules:Well, you know what a lip combo is, don't you? No idea. Well, give it your best guess. A lip combo? A lip combo. Something you put on your lips. But take it a step further. What's a combo, man? What would a combo be? Two colors. Two things. Two things, okay. And what would be the two things you put on your lips? Lipstick, lip gloss. That's not a bad guess. This is more lip liner, lip gloss. I didn't know lip liner existed. Lip liner, lipstick, lip gloss perhaps. Do you know what a claw clip is? No. What's a men's item that like women wouldn't know? So here's where I was going for. I feel like the thing you see all the time is like these entrepreneurs talking about how men's health, like men's, you know, what do you call it?
3:37Self-care is going to become a big thing. And I don't think it ever really becomes a big thing.
3:42Jules:Well, because you don't - We just like, I think for most guys, we're good with the shampoo, body wash, and some opportunistic conditioner. Like I don't - Deodorant, of course. Like we don't - You're a real two-in-one. Like a two-in-one. I'm not a two-in-one. But a two-in-one would be a sweet spot for you. Funny enough, I don't love the two-in-one. Why? I just, I don't have a good answer why. Because sometimes I'm only in the shampoo mood. Whatever that means. Whatever that means. Well, and then you do... Yeah, like putting the cream on the face. You do a little hair gel. Oh, hair product, yeah.
4:17Jules:Yeah, but you're not a big moisturizer on the face kind of guy. Never. Less is more. Less is more. But what is a guy? I think for a guy would be a... We wouldn't know. A wedge? Because we don't know them. What's a wedge? A golf club. Oh. Oh, I know what that is. I just didn't know the context. But what am I looking for? A men's self... Care item? Amends anything. Amends item. Yeah. What about the razors? Is there any? Oh, a number two. I know that. That a buzz shade. A ball marker. Know what that is? Pick up your ball, put your marker down. And golf? I guess. I wouldn't know what that looks like, but probably most women would.
5:01Looks like it's just a coin. I got to think of something. Has to be flat, doesn't it? Not as flat as you'd think they would be. Because I guess, yeah. Some people use casino chips. Okay. Let's think of one more thing.
5:17Jules:The index 500, but we know what that is. I don't know what the index 500 is. Oh, S &P 500. Oh. Index funds. But these are things that are not just guys. These are both. Right. But lip combo can also be both. That's true as well. So we need to call that out. I have no idea. Upon further reflection, I don't think I own a single item where you don't know what it does. Let's try it. Please try to get one. I'm thinking, all right, when I travel, my cosmetic case is this big. I never think of your cosmetic case. I know what it does, and it's very bare. Yeah. It's shocking. What I bring when I travel, all very basic stuff.
5:59I have my laptop with me everywhere.
6:01Jules:You wouldn't know what my eyebrow dye looks like. That would be shocking for you. Yeah, I would probably bat two for 10 if you asked me to name 10 items of yours in the bathroom. My face gym thing, you wouldn't get that. Okay. Yeah, so there's that. So girls, rule. Boys, drool. Because we know the things. Yeah. No, I've got nothing. I truly like, I have. Maybe people could comment it. I have a thought. i think certain supplements that guys take you know them i'm gonna know them yeah i'm gonna know them this is my area okay okay i have a thought about tate okay kids in general before we get into the q a episode and we talk about the u.s open because we're going to the u.s open um so tate as i've mentioned this but i was thinking about it more in depth okay Tate got pushed on the playground.
7:02Okay.
7:02Jules:Okay. Okay. Let me start from the beginning. I was reading the book, Do You Know How Much I Love You? Is that what it's called? Do You Know How Much I Love You? Yeah. And it's talking about how you're going to get your feelings hurt, but it's okay because like mom or dad will be there. And I was thinking about her feelings getting hurt. I was thinking about how she got pushed at the park and she fell down, but she was fine. And the mom, you know, she got up, the mom reprimanded the little boy. and then Tate like brushed it off and still got to do the zip line and like she was okay. She could have cared less afterwards.
7:36Jules:She was just mad at that little boy and like wanted him out of there but his mom took care of it and she was like, I want to ride the zip line so she got to ride the zip line. Where it's going to suck is when somebody's mean to her and her feelings are hurt. I'm really not prepared for her feelings to be hurt. Yeah, that'll be a very sad day. I do think her feelings were hurt on the playground that day. Like when she fell, she didn't cry because she was pushed. So she didn't fall because of the pain of being pushed. She fell because like she cried because sorry, she cried. I think she cried because like her feelings were hurt.
8:14That's I think she felt like violated that someone could physically push her without her approval.
8:23Jules:But she didn't she didn't stay. She was so mad though. But she didn't get home and be like, I'm sad. She couldn't believe that she could be standing somewhere waiting for something and someone could just throw her out of the way. Yeah. Toddlers probably can't like ruminate on things. They, Jules, that's it. And that is it in one sentence. They cannot. They have goldfish memories, 10 second memories. And I. She was so mad. There's going to be a day though where somebody hurts her feelings. It'll be very sad. It's going to be sad. It's going to be good for her. I know that ultimately I have to remember it's good for her.
8:55Jules:We cannot shelter her. She will be stronger and better because of it. But it will break my heart. It will break my heart. The first time I ever saw her sad. I'll never forget. When we brought Rocky home from the hospital. That I was holding Rocky. She wasn't mad. She was just the tears were streaming down her face. But everyone said power through would be the best thing ever. And it is. Okay. So today we're doing the Q &A episode. Because. Is there any theme to the Q &A? Not really. Or just random questions? I mean. I'm seeing them all for the first time now. They're not surfaced. Okay. They're not surface level questions.
9:33Jules:Let's let them rip. I would say. They're a bit like, they're a bit below the, I think. Let's let them rip. Let's go. Let's get into it. Well, number one, are you sad leaving the kids for the first time? And have you been to the US Open? I'm having a very hard time leaving the kids. Very hard time. I'm totally mixed on it. yeah i'm i'm sad about it i just they will they would hate new york they would hate riding the train from dc to new york it's better for them to stay here we did change our flight to come home early though this is true there's something i wanted to bring up yesterday uh on monday's episode but i forgot okay and it is um sleeping i was thinking should we do it later it is sleeping in a hotel room by yourself and the confusion that occurs waking up now like where's tate why didn't you just you wake up and it's very much like all right like where's alex where the kids where am i like at home you're waking up with so much around you the normal and you know you're you wake up and you're automatically like all right did i wake up because i heard tate crying did i wake up because i'm naturally waking up did i wake up because alex is in the bathroom like what is it and then the hotel room you're just just you and you play like placing where i was in chicago it took me a good good few seconds yeah you have to say like okay i'm in chicago right where is it all right no one's here okay that's weird right where am i all right sorry but um back to the question yes this is what happens when i don't know the questions No, no, no.
11:16Jules:That was a good little tidbit. Yeah. So here is why I am mixed. I'm mixed because I know that there will be periods where we miss them tremendously. I know the mornings are just going to feel like a giant kind of gaping hole. But I also know that you and I are overdue for some great one-on-one date and fun time. and so to have a couple days of that I think is going to be really fun and really special yeah I but we will miss them throughout I'm so excited about hanging out with you but I am and like New York's where we met and like it's going to be really really really fun um but I was thinking yesterday I was like oh gosh we have a flight coming up this week like and then I was like wait it's just Harrison and I it'll be it will be a fun flight it'll just I I could do whatever I want.
12:13Jules:I haven't bought Wi-Fi on a flight in a very long time. Maybe I'll get it. Maybe I'll read. We'll see. And the train, the part that I'm looking forward to the most, the train from D.C. to New York. We're flying United there, American back. United, I think, now has Starlink and should have Starlink on the flight. I love that. And American is rocking some great free Wi-Fi right now. Oh, they're giving out Wi-Fi for free? Yes. Like, yes, on my last few flights, it's all been for free. But I don't know how much of that is if it's tied to like I'm on AT &T. So I don't know if they're doing it just for AT &T members or if they're doing it just for their American club or whatever it's called members.
12:58But either way, I know I've been getting it for free.
13:00Jules:OK. Yeah, I did not know that. For free to and from Chicago. Look, guys, I'm going to be totally honest with you. I was wearing the same blue light glasses for way too long. I kept holding onto them because I dreaded the idea of spending a few hundred dollars just to replace a pair that I had grown used to and that I loved. But every time I thought about it, I just think, well, a loose screw is manageable or I can live with a little scratch. But that's exactly why Zinni is such a game changer. Zinni is an online eyewear shop with stylish prescription glasses, sunglasses, and customizable lens options.
13:33Jules:They make it incredibly easy to own more than one pair with pricing starting at under$30. You just go to Zinni.com, pick a frame, enter your prescription, and they ship them right to your door. There's no store visit and there's absolutely no pressure. And at those prices, you stop asking, do I really need new glasses? And you start asking, why wouldn't I just get a few pair? You can get a work pair. You can get a fun pair. You can get a pair that you leave upstairs and a pair that you do for a specific outfit and one that you leave downstairs. It's all about being able to express yourself and have a pair for every version of you.
14:05Jules:That scratched up pair has done its job. upgrade today with Zenni. Go to zenni.com slash podcast and use our code podcast15 for 15 % off your first order. Plus free shipping on all US orders over$65. The styles sell out, so don't sit on it. That's Z-E-N-N-I.com slash podcast promo code podcast15. Okay, I'm excited about this though. And I'm excited about the US Open. I have not been to the US Open. And I forgot that every year when the US Open rolls around, I say to myself, I want to go, and I want to go try one of those little honeydew drinks. I can't believe more sporting events have not self-branded a drink.
14:49Jules:It's genius. So for those who don't know what the honeydew says, it's a vodka-based drink, vodka, soda, some sweetener in there, and they then take honeydew, And they cut it in the shape of tennis balls. And then they put little toothpicks in it. And they put it in these fancy glasses. These are not fancy glasses. They're US Open plastic glasses. US Open plastic cups. And the experience is built around the honeydews. They also, I saw Heather McMahon. She had champagne delivered to her seat. Harrison and I, one thing about us this past month, we have not really drank. And if we have, it's been a special occasion.
15:31Jules:Really not you because you're training for your race. I'll do it on a special occasion. I'm seeing, and it's, and like, we feel amazing. I've been seeing these drinks and I'm like, well, I got to try them all. Yeah, I'm not, when I was a US, when I would go to the US Open, the only signature drink really was, the only drink I would have was the Honey Deuce. So it's also, it's a great, it's a great, we'll bring some cups back and maybe we'll host a little US Open finals party and we'll serve Honey Deuces. I'm going to I'm just going to stop you right there we're not going to do it nope I'm doing low nope too much effort I don't think there's that much effort no I don't want to host okay I'm in my no host era not until the pool and everything's completely done I'm with you on that like accepted yeah thank you okay great what were we looking at Jules I was just looking up other drinks because the only one I could think of was the mint juleps at the derby mint juleps yeah oh yeah yeah yeah yeah there's Pimm's cup at Wimbledon.
16:37Jules:My mom loves a Pimm's cup to make them. But that to me is, and even the mint julep, like those are drinks that are widely, like a Pimm's cup is widely served in the UK. And so that's almost like saying it's beer at the Super Bowl. Well, no, it's like saying they take an Aperol spritz and they kind of dedicate it to tennis. Okay. This is more, they made the drink. the honeydew was originally created and i've only ever seen the honeydew served at the u.s open oh versus a pimm's cup you'll get you know it's a very common drink in london oh yes this is a fun see it's always it's that one person on the marketing team it's like why don't we start a drink yeah and it just becomes a viral moment like that and then what's going on with the chicken tenders there's chicken tenders they have caviar you it's apparently enough charge for the caviar is what well of course that makes sense but my friend went this weekend and she just got the regular chicken tenders with a um what would it be with a quad of dipping sauces okay that's what i'm not a caviar guy the caviar plus the creme fraiche is is a step above that do you know i there's not a food i understand like less than caviar alex cost loves caviar you love caviar i just i don't really get caviar i had never had caviar and then I had it.
18:02Jules:I don't know how old I was, 20-something. I was so happy I was not introduced to it prior to. It is the best, most salty delight in your mouth ever. I always thought this is the most overrated, stupid thing. Who would pay this much for a food? Phenomenal. What do you think that the regular plain chicken nuggets with the sauce costs? $28. $49. How did you know that? Oh. Because I go to a lot of sporting events. Oh. And then what do you... Okay. Seems like you looked this up. I swear I did not. And this one I feel equally as good about. This next one. How much do you think the caviar top chicken nuggets are?
18:37Okay, 62. More?
18:40Jules:75. 79. 88. 94. 106. 100 flat for a box of how many chicken nuggets? Nine. Six. I can't sign off on this. I have to get that. Like I have, I've never been to the US Open. i really wanted to go we're going we'll wait we'll we'll stand by the trash can are you ready wait for someone to throw some of those out and we'll scoop it up are you ready for my girl math yeah we're coming back a day early which means we're canceling one night of a hotel which means i'm getting the hundred dollar box i'm just getting it we're in such an annoying predicament this is annoying this is a very annoying predicament and this goes to like Like my cancellation policy is just not ever working.
19:23Okay. This is silly. So they won't.
19:26Jules:Tell the whole, we were going originally. So originally the plan was Thursday to Monday. Okay. Thursday night in DC, Friday to Monday in New York. Then we decided we want to see the kids on Labor Day and we want to hang out with them all day. Yes. Do water activities the whole day. Yes. And record. So I'm still under the cancellation window up until midnight tonight. Okay. They won't let me just cancel the Sunday night. So I need to cancel the whole thing and rebook. The problem is there's no availability at the hotel. Oh. So I'm concerned if I cancel. We won't be able to get another. We won't be able to get a room and just get Friday night, Saturday night.
20:12And where it gets even more complicated, you'd be like, well, why not just cancel that and book another hotel? because I booked Saturday and Sunday through Chase Travel.
20:22Jules:Yeah. And I booked Friday direct with the hotel. Non-refundable. Harrison, that's a you problem. Sweet. That's a you problem, honey. Yeah, okay. I was going to say, and I didn't need to oust it, but I heard you on the phone with Chase Travel yesterday, and that's the they. Like, I do, I kind of understand. What do you mean? In its simplest form, ignore Friday. We have a Saturday through Monday reservation. they're not letting me cancel Sunday night that's crazy and have you tried to go direct to the hotel to cancel? yes they said because it was booked with Chase we can't do that and Chase will only let you cancel the whole thing or nothing at all yes and so we're short of a hotel on we're short of a hotel on Saturday night we're locked in Friday Chase did say they'd send me an email so I'm seeing if they sent it but they didn't Chase is trying to do it.
21:17Jules:Chase is not trying to do it. Chase is doing the method, which I'm all for, which is when a restaurant only has a burger on their happy hour menu. And you go up to them. This is called the pump fake. You go up to them and you say, hey, I know the happy hour is over. Can I please have the burger? The waiter knows there's no chance. But I want them to still be like, you know what? I'm just going to go check with the chef. Come back. He won't do what I tried. Don't even check. Because I know if I cancel it. Chase isn't trying. He's like, I'll call you back. I know if I just cancel it, then we're going to, and I try to rebook just a Saturday night.
21:53It's not going to be there because the systems take forever for the inventory to upgrade. So I think I'm going to wait 24 hours and then just hope that it comes online.
22:01Jules:Wait, no. Book it? Is there a room available? There's not a room available. I called the hotel direct and I looked on all the third-party websites. Okay. The hotel can't. Last thing, because maybe this is just a little boring. But if you cancel it and then call the hotel direct. Yes, but. You do it with them on the phone. I'm going to cancel it. But you can't plan that because it takes so long for the systems to upgrade. And it's going to go back in the Chase system. Does it go in their system? Okay. Well, I'll move us on from this. Okay. Who do you think that we're going to see? I saw Hannah Burner was there with Crocs.
22:40Jules:Oh, fun. She had her Crocs on, which is good because she's very tennis-y. She was a tennis player. Yeah. And does Heather McMahon play tennis? Golf. She golfs. She's a golfer. Okay. And then who else did I see was there? The number one sport I would like to play that I do not play. Tennis. Is tennis. Loved it growing up. Do you know that people who play tennis on average live 17 % longer, I believe? Well, it's really, really, really good for your brain. Yeah, and I think it's a really good couple sport, both you and I to play together and us to play against other couples. Well, it's a really good long jet, like sports at lat, that you can play for the - Sounds like a great Tuesday night activity.

23:27Jules:It's Tuesday. Tuesday. And we can't, we have dance. No, I'm kidding. I - That was me making fun of myself. I understood. Oh, I didn't get it. I think you did too. At a subconscious level, you understood and ignored. And decided to move along. One thing that lives rent-free in my head is Dr. Stephanie that we had on. I think about this probably once every two days, how dementia is oftentimes caused or furthered, maybe moved along quicker if you're deaf. I think about it all the time. I'm also intrigued by that. And my mom's just like on this right now for people to be gathering. That's apparently supposed to be the number one most important thing that you can do to prevent dementia.
24:13Jules:Okay. is to gather with people for dinner at least once a week. Okay, so Nori, is she gathering? She's a gatherer. Okay. She's trying to gather at one house? She's trying to get a couple others to gather. Where does she gather? I really understand that. I really understand that. Intuitively, it makes so much sense. Yeah. Everything from whether you're hosting or getting up and getting out of the house and having conversation around current events and what you did that day and so on and so forth. It really makes sense to me. It's like gathering, hearing, reading. I don't know. Human interaction.
24:47Jules:Okay, I'm going to send this list out to the people that I know. Yeah. Okay, but where does she gather? She'll go on walks with my aunt's niece once a week. But where does she gather for dinner? Does she have people over to your house? No. She goes out? Yeah. She would go to a restaurant. A restaurant. A restaurant gatherer. Yeah. Okay, great. So gather, people. Walks. Walks and restaurants. There you go. Nori Minich. she's gonna lead from the front on that one she's she's trying she's really trying to lead is no i'm in it's ever gonna be a guest on the pod oh my god no i hope no but she texted me the other day and she said google my name and see what comes up like my mom did you google it yeah it's just like you go to the photos and it's just like two parents in a podcast it's like her pictures because she does research and publishes research and her um like her picture and name will be associated to the papers.
25:43Jules:So it's just like all like this normal professional stuff and then just like 13 ,000 dads arrested or whatever, denied access to the World Cup. Yes, because they didn't pay child support. Just like under her name. That's so funny. So she does research. She does the data and some stats for it. But like, yeah, she manages the data. she's an author on the papers because she helps with the data i don't know okay she's been doing the same thing since i was born so wow does she like her job she loves it okay shorts at a at a university which i think people who work at universities love working at universities i did not know that about universities did you okay good for nori all right so do we have anything else on the u.s open any bets on who we're gonna see ben stiller's been everywhere he's been at all the things he was at uh him at jordan woods and carl anthony towns's wedding was the best thing i'd ever seen that's really funny it was so funny because he obviously didn't miss a game in the playoffs the finals and then like for him to be at the wedding and he's just like taking but like it's just it's the best thing ever have you seen the uh the cpg product you launched no no interesting what is it because i think it's really good but i'm just not seeing it as much as i'd expect to see it what is it it's called stillers soda okay i'm in on that and look if you pull up the branding the branding's really cool okay and it like fits in that whole guys are better for you soda that tastes good and um and has awesome ingredients well but like it's branded like super old school and i love the name and the time with him but yeah for whatever reason i'm just not really seeing it or hearing about it and i think this is a great example like i feel like he keeps coming up on the pod you you're following him but we're not really seeing it well i'm actually not following him at all.
27:49Jules:He's popping up in other places. He needs to get the Stiller's soda in people's hands. What are we looking at, Jules? He's got root beer, Shirley Temples, and lemon lime. That's cool branding. He's not going to know how to do this. He's not online. So someone needs to tell Ben. I'm sure they'll figure it out. Timothy Chalamet would love... I thought this was a good one though. Would love a crossover. I thought this was a good one. He needs to do a Knicks flavor. I'm sure we'll see it in New York. We'll be on the lookout for it. I will be getting it if I see it. Now that seasons are changing and activities are starting, the days have turned into a whirlwind of nanny share, play dates, and now dance and gymnastics for Tate.
28:32Jules:And guys, the last thing I want to do at the end of all of that is fight over dinner or figure out what's for dinner, and that's where Hungry Root comes in. Last week, they sent us roasted salmon and sweet potatoes on Brussels sprout sheet pan bake, and it was so good. Everything in one pan, in the oven, done. Zero brain power required, zero pile of dishes at the end, and that's the best part. But here's what actually makes Hungry Root different. It's not just a meal kit service. It's a full grocery service. So you're getting real ingredients, ready-to-go items, and brands you already love all-in-one delivery.
29:06Jules:And the longer you use it, the smarter it gets. It learns what you like, it adapts to your family when learning what you actually eat, and things just keep showing up that I'm genuinely excited about. Tate is obsessed with the solely fruit jerky and I absolutely love the good crisps. Like I salivate just thinking about them. You're going to love Hungry Root as much as I do. For a limited time, get 40 % off your first order. Plus get a free item in every box for life. Go to HungryRoot.com slash 2Parents and use code 2Parents. That's HungryRoot.com slash 2Parents. Code 2Parents to get 40 % off your first box and a free item of your choice for life.
29:42Jules:Okay. What tips do you have for a couple that's looking to start investing together?
29:51Jules:Open up a Robinhood account. I actually have a great suggestion for this. Great. On that guy's not financial advice. Never is. I love Robinhood because great user interface and super easy to set up. They have a lot of different functionality in there, like 401ks, whether or not you like them or don't like them. And one of the functionalities they have is a joint investing account. Oh. Yes. And so if you and your partner both open up a Robinhood account, you just click the joint investing at the top. You can then invite your partner. You link your accounts. And then you can set up auto deposits on there.
30:38Jules:Obsessed with that. Yeah. And then as I've spoken about before, I love ETF investing. That's where I personally have invested a lot of our capital. And then I think that I like to put 80 to 90 % of it in that when it comes to equities and then 10 to 20 % of it in single stocks. And those are single stocks that you're interested in tracking, following. Chances are the returns on those are probably not do as well as the S &P 500. Picking stocks is very hard. So that's more for... When I buy a single stock, what it does is it encourages me to learn more about a situation and then follow that situation.
31:31and so while i may make a little less than if i just bought the etf um i gain more i gain a lot of knowledge if that makes sense yeah go ahead alex well i was just gonna say and then and then
31:44Jules:if you have your joint account on robin hood maybe some nights a week or once a week or whenever you feel like it when you guys sit down at dinner you can open it up and look at it together that's kind of what i was gonna say what do you guys think like what's a way to make it fun like we talked about the football draft like maybe the wife picking the thing and the husband managing it but like what's a way to make this fun like a date night and that's where it gets a little trickier because when you look at the returns on single stocks picking single stocks versus broad etf exposure uh your your returns generally underperform okay so it's a lot more fun to research a stock and pick a stock and then talk about the stock than it is just buy a basket of stocks so that's why because you do both i like yeah having the majority of capital in the etfs and then um picking single stocks to learn conversation so on and so forth so the game i don't know how fun this game is but um you can each buy stock and look at the performance this as it comes out of mouth is not very fun not fun at all but you you look at the stock's performance over the following year and whoever whatever stock does better the other one gets a gift no what we did that was no what we did that was fun was you said like what are a couple things that you love like don't don't think about if it's a public company whatever it is tell me some things you love and i was and i can't remember what i said at the time but oh well i like loved netflix like so then we just he would buy a couple of those i was just gonna say what if you had a movie night and then whichever streamer you ended up on that's why i'm talking yeah i'm saying fun not yet what you just mentioned was not fun h we got to do more like oh you like ice cream okay it's been in jerry's public i don't know yeah but here here's where here's here's where i i struggle with this conversation because just because you love the product doesn't mean it's a great stock to own right and so i get very wary of and once again none of this is financial advice but like if I go love a product buying a stock that isn't something I go and do and that isn't something that I would necessarily suggest other people go and do and so to imply that you know you're going to generate a return from doing that is like it's it's it I that's where I try to line but I also think like for me at least it's just like just doing the first one is what kind of gets your foot in the door so if that one's just going to be a fun one and the idea is not to generate return it's just like the more you expose yourself to the idea of putting money in the market it's so well said jules the hardest stock to buy is your first stock and getting in the game is so important and you don't need money you don't need a lot of money to get in the game hold on let me ask this then yeah if i want to buy netflix yeah netflix give me a share price an option yeah no you tell me one wait sorry how much could a share price be 19 yes but you can buy fractional you don't need to buy a full share as well so i could go to netflix maybe jules is going to give us the price here 81 dollars and seven cents okay 81 so that's a high that that's high right the the share price
35:28is not reflective of the value of the company.
35:32Jules:Okay. We're going to ignore that. That's too much. But anyway, it's$81. So I'm like, I really want to buy Netflix, but I don't want to get into the stock market for$81. I only want to do it for$40. Or$50 is my max. I can buy a fraction of Netflix. Yes. So you can go into Robinhood and you can go to buy how many shares do you want? You can put in 0.5 shares. Great. And you can buy it. yeah but awesome okay then there you go boom because i think some people think the stock market is going to make a thousand dollars to get in and it's not no no it's not it's you can get in 10 bucks and buy stock buy an etf and get in the game and um it it is fun it it is fun to buy shares in a company and then and then track how it does even as when it comes out of your mouth it sounds kind of weird and lame it is it is interesting and and then you learn things along the way like Like Robinhood sends you a lot of notifications.
36:25And so you'll see, okay, like my stock is up 10 % today or it's down 10 % today. It's like, why? And they're like, oh, they released earnings. And for some people, everyone knows what releasing earnings means. But other people, they don't really know what that process looks like. And four times a year, a company will go and they'll report how they did financially to the market and the market will react off of that.
36:47Jules:Okay. So you just learn, pick up a lot along the way. I like it. Yeah. All right. it's going to be just a very different question than that one why doesn't tate have her ears pierced okay well the question for you well i think that the question then becomes when should a kid get their ear pierced a lot sometimes babies get their ear pierced really young and like do they look adorable yes but i didn't want to do that to her and then we looked up the aap and they recommend waiting until a child reaches an age where they can understand and manage the after care independently, which is usually around eight to reduce infection risks.
37:22Jules:I don't, I don't know. Listen, watching Tate get a vaccine was hard enough on me and that's where they put the needle in. So doing and doing that to her ears, I just, I know she would cry. I think it would look adorable. It's just, I didn't want to do it. I actually have a view on this and I didn't think I was going to have a view. i think that this is one of those things that i don't see why you would do it before they ask you to do it fair i so i like the aap's suggestion of eight that intuitively makes a lot of sense especially because that also feels like the age where they know whether they want them pierced or whether they don't want them pierced i remember going to get my ear pierced for the first time i remember how it felt i remember the gun and i remember being so excited to pick out my earrings and it was a really fun thing where did you go claire's how old were you we had claire's eight we had claire's big moment big moment big moment canada in the game you know who also had their ear pierced you yeah we gotta find a photo we gotta find a photo when the eighth grade i think I think I was probably 11th grade.
38:39Oh, my God.
38:40Jules:11th grade is a hilarious age. That's a very intentional age. Here's a new H-bomb segment. It can be my previous fashion trends. Yeah. I've had some bad ones. Well, I actually, I love that you. Yeah. And the reason why I think 11th grade is because I think I had to take it out in the summer for like a job or something. Or sports. no I think I taped it during sports oh you can tape it I am loving that you got your ears pierced and do you want to know what I'd like to present to the class now what a fabulous fantasy football punishment that is that's a really really good one because you can take it out and it can grow back you can wear an earring for a week and then take it out it's a really good one I'm going to propose it to the league it is pretty good I'd like to see that because it's cheap, it's easy you wear it for one week, take it out and your ear will close up I think it's a much better fantasy football punishment, especially for our specific league, where right now we wear the T-shirts at the trade show because everyone's in the same industry.
39:44If you also need to show up to the trade show with your ears pierced.
39:48Jules:If like a guy that I just like, a father that I interact with often just rolled up with his ears pierced one day, I would just be like, I love it. But wow. Wow. I think that it's worth proposing to your High Rocks group finance and ear in an ear pierced the loser has to get their ear pierced okay and what if it just like starts a whole new life for harrison what if he has to get it i i changes his vibe of all the things i'm into like if i were to shave my head i could see myself getting into that tattoo like what i love about this new short hair thing i'm doing is and i'm not sure how obvious it is but There's zero maintenance going on with this.
40:31There's no product in there. And so I can just shower, get out and roll. What were you saying?
40:36Jules:Someone commented on Monday's episode and they said, Harrison looks so young in this episode. He has been looking young, Jules. I've been telling him this. It's this hell kick he's on. Thank you. You look good and young. And I said, this is the episode that I made the old joke in for the first time. True, Jules. Yeah, you've got a pep in your step. so an earring would just fit right in i love i'm all for a guy having it like if you want to get like an ear piercing like one tattoo i'd be so down but the problem is so harrison has a spectrum of his style you have what i call dad mode or maybe this mode which is like this does not lend itself to you having an earring and a tattoo but when you put on your painter's pants and your backwards hat and your graphic tee like that guy could very much so i'm at a crossroads in my style i can i know you are i know i'm watching it happen yeah we're we're there's a part of me that's liking you know kind of this dual mix of the workout clothes which i just love and and it's too functional to not to the like what i wore on on monday's episode some nice what do you call those shorts that I wore what did you wear over this black high rock shorts no no no that's my old style like a chino short like a chino short oh that's what he wore with a collared short shirt yeah you let the neighbor across the streets impacting you yeah it looks good but why why can't we go get you some of this workout shorts that are a little shorter and some graphic tees to run around during the day in.
42:15Jules:And we could get rid of these high rocks, neon blue and purple and green shoes. What about that? You know what I got? I got you some Nikes. I got good news for you. What? Nike is about to release a high rock shoe. Oh, thank goodness. And you don't think for a minute I will not be migrating to that. I know you will be getting them. Yeah. And the best part about Harrison, two colors. I really like these though. I haven't worn Puma shoes in maybe ever. Puma. Puma. Like, where is your dialect from? Puma. Why would it be Puma? These will get a rebuy. Actually, these are the third pair. Say Puma. Puma.
43:00Jules:Why would it be Puma? Puma. Puma. People do keep asking about the Tuesday thing and I Googled it and it says it's not Canadian. It's not. Monday, Tuesday. Like, it's not Canadian because none of his other friends say it. Tuesday. Tuesday. Everyone else on the planet says Tuesday. Okay. Besides the people in the UK. And what do they say? They do say Tuesday. You know, having the nanny share at our house a few days a week is honestly my favorite thing ever. But it also means our living room floor has basically become a toddler hazard zone. Last week, I looked over and I saw the girls happily eating snacks on the rug.
43:42Jules:And let me tell you, the toddlers, they are messy. This is exactly why I'm obsessed with tumble rugs. They're honestly a game changer. These aren't just rugs. They are spill-proof, stylish, completely machine-washable rugs designed for actual messy lives. And the secret is in the surface. If you spill something, the liquid just beads up on top of it. You literally wipe it away in seconds. It kind of feels like magic. And when you need a deep clean, easy, you guys. You just peel off the pad and you toss it in the wash and you're done. Plus, they're Echotech certified, so they're non-toxic and totally safe for your kids.
44:16Jules:And the best thing, they look like high-end designer rugs, so you're not sacrificing on the look. Machine washable rugs made better. For a limited time only, our listeners get 10 % off plus free shipping at tumbleliving.com slash to parents. That's T-U-M-B-L-E living.com forward slash to parents. After you purchase, they will ask where you heard about them. Please support our show and tell them that we sent you. How do you guys have so many good relationships with your neighbors? Nobody talks in our neighborhood. Do you want to go? Yes. Okay. We live and it's the front porch culture. We live in a city neighborhood where everyone's out on their front porch because we don't have large backyards.
44:58It's pure luck. Oh. This is pure luck.
45:01Jules:And the porches. Yes, but there's nothing that we did to facilitate this. besides be on our porch but you guys didn't talk to your neighbor so much before tate was born well jules there was a very big shift too when we bought the house yes renters on our street they're not they're not invested too much in getting to become your best friend which i get because if you're gonna move why put your effort there when we bought the house everyone was like we're gonna be here for a long time listen like when our car got hit you know like you that those are your people yeah i i think i think it's crime i think it's a multitude of factors i think that that one as alex said there's a there's a front porch culture two the lot sizes are small so the homes are are really close together and there's there's really not a lot of privacy which i love And so you're not just like, you can't just bear really barricade up in your yard or, um, that's two and three.
46:05I think that people live in our neighborhood because it's very walkable. And so people are often walking to and from places rather than just getting in their cars and driving places. So like this morning, you know, we saw two different people on the street because they were out walking the dogs.
46:24Jules:also our neighborhood is fun I learned that at the Memorial Day party we have a fun group of moms and dads I firmly can't say we did something we also got lucky other than we got lucky in moving to a street that had these people and these dynamics yeah I agree with that people don't have garage we don't have back alleys on the street so people don't have garages in the back in the back so to the point like when people go and get in their car you're seeing them get in their car you're just seeing your neighbors all the time yeah um versus where i grew up and probably where you guys grew up too no my neighborhood is more like your guys's okay where i grew up it was very bigger bigger lots you know garages you drove you would drive back and then once you drove in your garage you could just go in your house you would never see anybody And I think that comes with like living in the neighborhoods that are just right on the outskirts of downtown versus living out any further in the suburbs.
47:31Jules:Totally. The other thing, though, is like. I do think there's a level of like, OK, the girl lives diagonal from us who Tate's just obsessed with and she's been bringing Tate the popsicles like her birthday is September 14th. I ordered her a monogram bag because Tate calls her Kiki. her name is not Kiki but she calls her Kiki so I ordered her a monogram bag that says Kiki and like Tate's gonna paint her something and like we're gonna give her her birthday gift and like that's just gonna deepen our relationship with them just because like it's just fun to do that with people on your street yeah but you can't do like I couldn't have done that on my street growing up me either and I loved where I grew up but like I loved where I grew up once again I couldn't tell you the names of the people that lived oh i still can't i can tell you my neighbors on both sides we really like i really could not we didn't have one block party my entire time growing up we didn't have block parties but we had a bunch of kids that were the same age oh i'm you know i'm you know i'm gonna make a slight amendment to what i said we had done one thing and we threw a block parties and i do think those block parties are very very good for community building yeah and everyone comes we did the crawfish boil and we did the uh memorial day here's the other thing i need i don't know how this hasn't happened yet they did it with sororities right how lucky charm sponsored a house at arkansas i need a sponsor for how our house for halloween it needs to be a candy it's a good call out i need somebody like it's a great call we will go all out we always do we'll have a million kids i'll put it all over social i have an idea candy sponsor i have an idea who are we gonna beep it sure we should turn our house um into like uh i think we should do something and make it like a like a haunt because on our front porch we could do something really cool and you could give out like i'm gonna get i'm gonna i'm gonna listen i'm loving that you're into this and you have ideas um of all the candy in the sea that one wasn't i'm big that wasn't where i was i wasn't even remotely where i was going we've been in the comments with reese's like i'm thinking that skittles reese's reese's okay well we're calling me out For Tuesday, Reese's.
50:04It is technically Reese's.
50:07Jules:Socially, I think it's Reese's. Crayon. Crown Royal. I'm working on it. Crayon. Crayon. I can't even say it anymore. Crayon. Crayon. Okay. Lawyer. I've perfected lawyer to lawyer for you guys. Where are we at next? So anybody that wants to do that, I'm here for it. All right. Next question. You ready? Yes. This is a two-parter. Okay. How do you prioritize your marriage? That's part one. And being a person, being your own person, outside of being a parent. Okay. I'm happy to start. Okay. Which one are you tackling first? In terms of prioritizing the marriage, you've got to be super intentional about it.
50:49Jules:Okay. And if you wait for things to happen for your relationship, they're not going to happen. So you make them happen. You have to make them happen. Okay. Give us some examples of what that looks like for you. You have to go out and you have to be intentional about carving out and planning date night. Or coffee. Coffee, getting your alone time. Because just like if you don't, it doesn't happen. And then you wake up and it's been six weeks and you haven't had a date. Eight weeks, you haven't had a date. So it's very much something that you got to keep top of mind. Okay. Especially in the newborn phase.
51:27Jules:I'm going to take it a step further. So on Sunday night, I was like, I just want to light my candle and I just want to read my book. And Harrison was like, well, I want to hang out with you. So we're going to do that together. What I wish we would have done taking it a step further is done like, because if we're just going to stay in the house and we're just like in our pajamas, put both of your phones up and then have your time together. Like, don't just sit there and scroll. Don't just sit there and watch TV or like scroll on your phone because you're not really bonding. But like, great. Why don't we go downstairs and make cookies together?
51:57Jules:or why, you know, and like leave your phone and like hang out together. Cause you can do that when the kids go to bed, that would be like the least example of it, which I feel like we do maybe once a week. And then the other thing is you're right. Like this trip's a good example of it. I want to bring the kids. I'm so sad we're not, but we're going, we're going to the U S open with my manager. And like, it is a bit of a work thing and we'll go and like, we need to have fun while we're there. And we need to hang out with each other and do stuff together and date. We then as far as being a parent or i mean being a person outside of being a parent i think an example for you is like why don't you say for you and then i can say for me why don't i say for you and you say for me i'm just kidding i i think like having just doing girls girl things like that's how i do it well actually a couple different things number one working is good for me doing that number two i love this philanthropy the jeremiah program i do stuff with like that's really, that fills my cup for service.
52:56Jules:Um, and number three, when I hang out with my girlfriends, whether they're moms or not just talking about things other than motherhood, um, really makes me still feel like I'm a person and I enjoy that. So like I went to coffee on Monday, some were moms, some weren't, and we just like sat there and we chatted about everything from kids to work to you name it. And we, we chat about it. And so I just think in general, having the kinds of conversations that aren't just kids 24 7 is really good for your brain your turn i don't think i'm going to say anything that's rocket science here but for me it's it's getting stuff that i find interesting on the schedule and doing it at times that don't um that work for you and the kids and so whether that's what were you gonna say jewels nothing golf um yeah working out this high rocks race is kind of a a great example of it part of like a business um group here plan things uh yeah simply plan things one thing that harrison and i also have a lot of interest and i plan things around those interests but i think the most important thing here because if you're listening to this and you're a parent, you're probably saying, okay, if I'm going to go to girls night, that means my husband's watching the kids or kid.
54:22Jules:So one thing Harrison and I are really good at, and we just did it early on was like, I want him to go do his things. He wants me to go do my things. We don't keep scoring on who does more, but I would say we, we end up being pretty even on this. That's very important. So I'm happy to say, I've got him. I've got him all. I've got him Saturday. You're going, he's running and he's going golfing. Great. I think our ratio of who is looking after the kids when the other one is doing something is very even. I think it's actually 50-50. And I think – I don't want to assume what people do. I think a lot of times it falls more on the woman.
54:58Jules:Whereas one thing Harrison and I know is like for us to be really happy, it needs to be we both get to do our things and we really make that a priority. Yeah. I never feel like I'm looking up and it's like, wow, you had three social events back to back to back nights in a row that I wasn't at. And I was with the kids. And vice versa. And vice versa. I feel really good about our balance on that, which I think kind of naturally happened versus like being intentional about it. A question. And I don't know if it will come out correctly. But I feel like most parents would get a babysitter to have them go and do something together.
55:45Jules:But I also feel like one thing that you guys would do is get a babysitter for you guys to go do something separately. Yes. We have. Does that make sense? That feels different than the normal. Very, very, very good call out because that's also a way that – and we recognize babysitters are expensive. and unfortunately we don't have any family in our city so we need to be more dependent on babysitters but yes like using whatever help you can get whether it is family whether it is babysitters and going and doing separate things is definitely something that I think happens once a week
56:31I think it happens
56:33Jules:every other week I don't I don't think it happens once a week even remotely. Every other week? Once a month. I would say that we go and do separate things and have a babysitter.
56:52Jules:When was the last time we did that?
56:57I'm with Jules here.
56:58Jules:But same. We did it when Tate was like nine and ten months, but we haven't done it in a very long time. i just think that that's like uh it's something we definitely do and i'm all for doing it i love doing it because sometimes on a saturday harrison's like i've got the i've got where i'm golfing with the guys and then like i'll have something come up so we will have like maria or her mom come but like i just i was just shocked by him saying once a week i can't remember the last time we did it okay but i love that i love the sentiment of doing it yeah i just i guess the the larger point is yes we totally do it and i think it's a good idea yes and yeah i stand corrected on timing but i'm sure i'll think of one because just because harrison has something on a saturday night i don't then not do something always right like if i have something come up i'm like okay i can do it yeah yeah and it's in but that's just i think that became more solidified when we narrow down like who we want to watch Tate.
58:00Jules:Like what we're loving is when Tate has somebody watch her, she gets excited about them coming over. But I don't know. Our current obsession is just being with her. Okay. Is Rocky going to join the nanny share and what are the hours? The nanny share hours are nine to five and eventually Rocky will join some version of the nanny share. Yes. We're still figuring that out. He's just learning to roll over. But he's now rolling. and I guess I've been I just been I've been cracking myself rocky roll it's good right rocky roll I try and teach it to tate she's she's not getting it but the rocky roll to me is I'm loving it um how would you have a conversation this is the last one how would you have a conversation about having more kids if your husband is happy with two kids but you would like a third.
58:51Okay.
58:52Jules:I love this question. What I would do if we, if I, if I wanted three and you wanted two, and we currently have two, I would say, what are you worried about? Explain to me your concerns about having the third. And I would try to talk you through those or do what I could to mitigate those. Yeah. It's been very surprising to me how many of our couple friends are on different pages and the amount of kids they want. I have a big one. I've never met somebody that has three or four that says they wishes they had less. I have met people that have had one or two saying, I do wish I went ahead and went for the third or I went for the fourth or I went for the second.
59:35Yeah, that experience is true for me as well. Thanksgiving table.
59:42Jules:But who's going to say that? I'm sorry. What? Who would say that? Who would say what? Who would say, oh, I had three kids, but I only wish I had two? But it's like saying who would say I have two and I wish I had three. People would say that. But like which one of your kids do you lob out of there? Right. Like you can't – I see why no one's ever said that because like that's evil. Well, and there's such joy that I do see how when you have the kid like you do – All right. Let me recut this for you. Okay. Okay. I'm not from our friends with three or four I'm not hearing them complain in a way that reflects that they wish they only had two kids okay yeah and like oh my god going from two to three was so much harder I'm just saying if you did have those regrets like I hear here's what I hear a lot about I hear a lot about how hard zero to one was, which we totally found.
1:00:43Okay. And I feel it's like pretty much all parents find that. We heard all about how hard one to two was, which I feel like that's kind of a mixed bag. I feel like some parents get rocked one to two and some parents like, and they think, and they think it's five X more work. And I think some parents think it's 30 % more work like us. I hear very little about how much harder it is to go from two to three. yeah yeah i i don't know but i do think some some people know they know for sure they want one they know for sure they want to they know for sure they want three but in this scenario where it's
1:01:20Jules:lopsided and one parent wants a different number i would just say okay what are your concerns can we address them i have no idea how you would convince someone though i feel like so much of it is like just your natural gut and instinct but if it's finances that's one thing that maybe i don't know if you could solve it but if it's like you know i want more time to myself or something like okay i'll do it i'll take on more of the load yeah i think that this is a a tough one to for me to give insight on i just i don't really have a view yeah but i just haven't dealt with it best thing i can and then i would say this i love this one you know think about your Thanksgiving table in 25 years.
1:02:04I love that one.
1:02:06Jules:And then who ask them, you know, are you, are we good? We're good with the two or maybe we can do some compromising. So, um, all right. Well, you guys, we love you. This week on Two Parents & A Podcast, happy Friday!! Harrison is out finishing his HYROX race (as Jules writes this lol).. results Monday, we can't wait hahaha
We filmed this Q&A answering YOUR questions, and we were so excited to get into them.. but first we got stuck on lip combos (and whether there's ANY men's product a woman wouldn't know.. comment if you have one, we came up short!) and a topic Alex has been thinking about a lot lately: how do you handle the first time your child's feelings get truly hurt? Not the falling-down kind.. the kind that breaks your heart a little 💔
Then we get into your questions: will it be hard leaving both kids for the first time (spoiler: YES) , and everything we're excited about for the US Open.. until we found out the chicken nuggets are $100?!
Then probably our most-asked question: finance corner with Harrison. We will say it until we're blue in the face, this is NOT financial advice!! But we do get into how we approach investing together, and even came up with some fun money date night ideas.
Then earrings: why doesn't Tate have hers pierced yet? We checked the AAP recs, landed on our answer, and got a surprise H BOMB along the way.. Harrison used to have HIS ear pierced?? (We are still trying to find the 11th grade photos… pls stand by.)
We finish with the relationship section: relationships with your neighbors (porch culture is undefeated), prioritizing your relationship with your partner, and your relationship with yourself (IMPORTANT!!).
Finally, WHEN Rocky will join the nanny share (Rocky roll update included), and a little advice column moment: answering a Q from someone who's on a different page than their partner about how many kids to have.. we see this with people we know more than you'd think!
Hope everyone has a great weekend :-) LOVE YOU GUYS!
