In short
Q&A-style parenting discussion covering back-to-school plans, potty training, transitioning to a big-girl bed, homeschool vs. public school, plus a few “how people find out they’re pregnant” examples and travel/screen-time talk.
Guests
No podcast guests appear in the transcript. Hosts are Nicola Dinan (narrator/host) and co-hosts Jules and Harrison (and recurring “Claude” as a character/name used in the conversation). No external interview guests are present.
Key claims
- Public school is the default; they’ll adjust case-by-case if a child needs something different.
- Potty training will start when Tate shows interest; they’re using a small potty and bathroom trips, not rushing.
- Big-girl bed transition is not on the radar yet; they’re waiting for natural readiness and pediatric guidance to “wait as long as possible.”
- For preschool, they may add a light 2–3 day/week program before kindergarten since their elementary school starts at kindergarten.
Notable examples
- Pregnancy “tells” they discuss: hairstylist noticing pregnancy, pregnancy gingivitis/bleeding gums, nail tech noticing faster-growing nails, metallic “pennies” taste, and superhuman smell.
- Potty-training approach: letting Tate sit on the potty during bathroom pee trips; she previously communicated “pee pee” to indicate needs.

0:41Visit homedepot.com. How doers get more done. All right, are we recording? Yeah. Okay. Okay. So what's the game plan for today, Jules? Talk us through it. Why me? Okay. Well, here's the other. Can we do, we're doing a Q &A episode today. Yeah. Lead from the front, Harry Bears. Do we want to talk a little life beforehand or are we not allowed to do that on a Q &A episode? You're certainly allowed to talk a little life beforehand. Okay. As long as you remember that this is coming out Friday. Okay. Yeah, I remember that. What do you – so I'm having a – when you like have a day where you go and like you get your nails done and your head on, what do you call that?
1:25Not self-care. Primping? Let's call it self-care day. I like that word. Because that's the word I was actually looking for. Okay. So I'm having a self-care day today. what do you think it what do you think consists of my to-dos in a self-care day what are the activities i'm doing in my self-care day i'd like you to guess please well knowing you i'm you know okay sorry you don't want other things so i maybe just go first okay a haircut that was gonna be my guess okay i wish we did family feud oh okay now your turn a function health appointment that that already happened this morning yeah a massage i don't know if you've ever gotten that's like negative points i'm not a massage guy i would either think a sauna or a hard workout some version of a sweat for you okay hard workout last thing gathering with a friend oh because that is good for your mental health Great call.
2:27No. Although I am picking neighbors up from the airport. Healthy eating? No. Similar to a function health scan. A doctor's appointment? No. Teeth cleaning. Oh, I wish. Oh, my God. I'm going to try and do that. I'm going to add that. This is more of a maintenance day. I completely agree, Jules. That's a body scan. Oh. Yeah. Yeah. This, Jules is correct. This is not self-care. This is self-care for me. No, no, no. Jules is right. This is maintenance. And me doing my facial things is also maintenance. Yeah, I was going to revise Alex's answer. Jules is correct. Because getting your nails done is maintenance.
3:06It's not self-care. Self-care is a massage. Right. I feel so good about getting all these things done today. I've been putting them all off. I'm just going to hammer them all out in the afternoon with the exception of the function one. We're so happy for you. Love it. It's probably because my mom's here that we have some time to do things. But I'm really happy for you to go do all that. as am i as am i should we discuss um the q a i got 45 topics to talk about okay tell us tell us how many topics i sent this morning yeah i thought they were for tomorrow yeah they are yeah okay let's do q a so if we're in canada um we are in are we in well we're in austin in the moment when this airs will be in canada So I got this K18 dry shampoo and like it's apparently like the best dry shampoo and it is really good.
3:57Okay. Like it does do its job, but it also gets like these white speckles all over me. And are they white speckles or dandruff? Oh, no, no, no, no. It's like paint. Do you have a dandruff issue? When I, so no. Have you ever? Yes. When I was pregnant with Rocky, when I went to get my hair done in the second trimester, she was like, I see this all the time with pregnant people. Like your scalp is so dry. Okay. Have you ever had an issue? I think at some point, like when I was in high school, I remember getting head and shoulders. Oh, yeah, that's helpful. I don't use head and shoulders because it takes your color out, strips the color away.
4:31They say sometimes that your hairstylist can tell that you're pregnant before you are. Because, like, hair changing is a big thing with pregnancy. And I've seen a couple of TikTok videos where the hairstylist reveals to the person that they're pregnant. and then they come back and they're like, I am pregnant. In the guise of the Q &A, while this isn't Q &A oriented, I think we should pull up a quick internet search on the five or ten most unique ways people find out they're pregnant. Because that was a really good one. Because that's a good one, like a hairdresser telling you. Unique ways that they find out they're pregnant or symptoms that point to them being pregnant.
5:12You're going to be better at this, Jules. You're going to be better at being dropped. I think the point is we're looking for more examples of people finding out they're pregnant from their hairdresser. I'm trying to think of one right now. Like a change in taste buds around a specific food that all of a sudden they don't like. Or just being like, pickles sound good? That was my mom's big thing. She was a vegetarian. And one day she woke up and she's like, I want a big steak. Her iron was low. It was like, oh my God. That's crazy. That was the... The tip off. Give me a second. Oh. She's thinking.
5:50She. What are you using? It's thinking. Claw. Okay. This to me is a clawed. It's a clawed question. Thank you. That's where I would have gone. Not chat. No. No. Chat would have been a little PC, a little incorrect. Probably would have misunderstood it a bit. Clawed's having a hard time with this prompt. Gums bleeding. Love it. Machine cleaning. Okay. Pregnancy gingivitis is real and it shows up early. Okay. Love that. That's exactly what we're looking for, Claude. Yeah. The nail tech or waxer. Nails grow freakishly fast or wax suddenly hurts 10 times more than usual. Blood flow and sensitivity both go up.
6:32So many facts on that. Another very good one. If somebody even like lightly like brushes my elbow when I'm pregnant, it hurts so, so bad. Contacts stop fitting right or your prescription shifts. the eye doctor. Interesting. Well, okay. These are all great. Oh, this is one I've heard. The dog will not leave your side, starts sleeping on your stomach, follows you into the bathroom. That is so sweet. So sweet. This is one, though, that like... No, that's pretty incredible. Does this actually happen? Yeah, like with our friend Alex and her two dogs, like her dog's demeanors have totally changed by her.
7:11But did their demeanor change because her demeanor changed. Do you know what I mean? I don't know. Because the fingernail thing and the gum thing, you think that... I'm just so proud of Claude. That was exactly what I was looking for. There's a couple more good ones. Okay, tell us. Your Oura Ring or your Apple Watch. I've heard that before. But that's a good one, but the worst one. Yeah. That's the opposite of what we're looking for in this. That's the chat GBT answer. That is the chat GBT answer. I totally agree. How do you find out you're pregnant before? Well, when you're doing your eight sleep monitoring, and listen, we love eight sleep, but.
7:53Correct. We want to find out that we're, that. Coffee tastes like pennies, metallic taste out of nowhere, and your daily order is suddenly disgusting. Yeah. Another one, another one we were looking for. And we'll do the last one. This says you can smell the neighbors, their laundry detergent, their trash, someone's lunch, two floors down, superhuman smell. I think that's such a fun one. That's a fun one. You just wake up on it and you're just catching whips. Yeah, but we always know what I say. I hate your deodorant when I'm pregnant, but I love it when I'm not. It makes no sense. Yeah. I always was like, you smell so – I loved her the way you smelled.
8:31And whenever I was pregnant with Tate, I was like, oh my gosh, your deodorant makes you want to throw up. All right, let's dive into the Q &A. Unless anybody else has anything else they want to discuss. No. Okay, you guys, one thing Harrison and I have been really intentional about is trying to delay screen time as long as possible, which obviously would make an exception on the flights because we're not superheroes. Okay, we all know that. But in the day-to-day, we're trying to hold off. And the problem is sometimes you genuinely need 10 uninterrupted minutes to get something done or drink your coffee before it becomes ice cold.
9:05Okay, we all know that. And that's why I'm glad I discovered Yoto, a screen-free audio player for kids age three to 12 that brings stories, music, learning, and imagination together in one simple device. Kids just pop in the audio card and can take the lead themselves. No cameras, no microphones, no ads, just their own imagination running the show. With more than 1 ,300 audio cards, including stories in Spanish and French, There's something for every age and interest. What's been such a win for us is watching Tate get excited to pick out her own cards. And one of her favorite things is when they have the music cards, we'll pop one in and she just dances around in the living room, which you guys know she's obsessed with right now.
9:46The reason Yodo has become such a big part of our routine isn't just because it's screen-free. It's because our kids genuinely love it. If you're looking for a gift they'll actually use and enjoy, head to Yodoplay.com. That's Y-O-T-O and use our code 2Parents to save 10 % off all eligible items. Add a little more imagination and a little less screen time to your family's day with Yodo. Thank you, Yodo, for sponsoring this episode. Okay. All right. So this is the Q &A episode because we are in Vancouver now. This is Friday's episode. While we're in Vancouver, we're going to record Monday and Wednesdays.
10:23So those will be IRL. And we're going to let you know how it's going. I'm hoping the flight goes well. I'll say this. I really hope the flight goes well because four hours? Four hours. We did an in. We don't have our seats selected yet. Yeah. This is what's getting me. We've been delaying this trip to Vancouver and largely because leaving when they've been doing the work in the yard has proven to be very inefficient. but we kind of have it we planned around like a down week week and a half um and so we booked this a couple days ago flights were crazy okay so for three one-way tickets there getting back wasn't bad three one-way tickets there how much do you think it was
11:20i saw something the other day about when people ask you to guess things and then you guess two spot on it makes it not fun you can guess two what do you guess i don't know i guess eight hundred dollars a ticket i was gonna say three thousand dollars yeah it was like a thousand bucks a ticket and and for you know a five six day trip and that's a clarify that's economy sorry like it's like whoa um looked at air canada points oh this is nice like crazy amount of points and i remembered united and air canada are partners i went and i looked on united's website the united points were like nothing oh so i booked all three tickets on points on united points worked out to like 200 bucks a ticket total so it was like 600 bucks no but like when you do the math on the equivalent yeah yeah it was like a 200 but we didn't get to choose our our tickets our seats so we have to wait to choose our seats when we get to the airport now but we got we got good seats on the way back when we do both these kids in laps we can't sit together because oxygen masks so because you can only have um one lap child per row yes the amount of breathing people per and there's only four oxygen masks per three person row there's always plus one so we can never sit beside each other and have tate and rocky in our laps but tate's getting your own seat and rocky will go on me nice yeah so i hope that's a pretty crazy cost area isn't it i forgot to tell you guys that on my way back here I was sitting next to a listener no way Jules it was funny and they had their little kid in the little it was a girl and she was the same age as Tate and we were talking and she was like blah blah and she was like Tate we love Tate did she like say are you Jules no no she said what do you do no yeah we were I was just having discussions with her about her kid just like nice and so she asked me if i have kids i said no i don't have kids but i know a lot about kids and then she was like i love them jewel that is so fun for you to sit next to the kiddos yeah so yeah no it was great i had i had my noise cancelling headphones i listened to rainy new york city and i read what rainy you are just the best she puts rain i understand i didn't know it It was possible.
13:52Why New York? Why not just rain? I don't know. It's just the best one that I found because it doesn't cut out when it loops back around. Oh, that's honestly, I understand exactly what you're saying. There would be nothing worse than it cutting out to loop back around. No, it's so annoying. Well, hold on. Good question for the listener. What do they listen to when they read? Yes, and Jules, I would like to say this. I was running into an issue yesterday where I was listening to my audio book at the kitchen table, which to people, it just looks like I'm just sitting there. Right. But I'm listening to my audio book, so I'm actually reading.
14:28But everyone kept talking to me. So I grabbed the book and I just opened it up to a random page and I sat there. I have a great debate. So no one talked to me. Okay. So Alex is listening to this audio book truly 24-7. I'm obsessed with it. Okay. And to the point, like interacting, you can't interact with her because she's always listening to the audio book. To the point, if you were doing acting the same way, but it was a TV show, it would be considered very, very rude. And so I feel like you're getting this free pass because like we'll be in the kitchen. You're like, shh, shh. And we're in the kitchen cooking.
15:14Like, what do you mean? And if you did that during a show, it would be like, there's no way you could do that. But you have to imagine. So is this like a loophole? It is a loophole. It's a loophole. And I feel weird about it because if I'm sitting there holding a book, reading, okay? You're going to be like, she's doing something with her brain. Good for her. But if I'm sitting there watching, bravo. You're going to be like, turn it off and get in here and come hang out with me. I'm going to give a more specific example. Okay. Okay. We can almost call this the break of the week. we're in bed the other night and I was trying to talk to you about something before bed and you were shh-ing me.
15:48I was like I'm reading I'm reading but it's my headphone. But if I had a show if the roles are reversed and you had a show on you would have paused the show or if I had a show on. Yes if you were on Twitter I'd get off and then talk to me. Which you do all the time so I don't know. But I'm reading Feels like. I don't know but I'm reading my book. I think that if she had the physical book in front of her you wouldn't bother her I would. He wouldn't. I would. When you're reading, always you hold the page. Well, you respect the physical book more than the audio book. It's everyone in the house does.
16:19Everyone. I was like, whoa, everyone needs to stop talking to me so far. And I picked up the book. Can I give you a little piece of advice on how to trick all of us? Yeah. Listen, but when you're listening, just have the book out in front of you. It's got to be a joke. It has to be a joke. Why? Is that what you just said? Twice. I just said I've been doing that twice because everyone kept talking to me.
16:53Like, where were you?
16:58Are you serious? Were you not listening or did you not understand? Harrison's crying. I'm crying, but I always cry. I told you. jules's reaction to me off that that was mansplaining yes something that i just explained twice oh i'm sorry it's okay but like were you not listening i i kind of thought you said on that last the last thing i thought you said that so you're just reading the book so i thought you you meant that you're not listening you just gave up on listening and went back to reading. No, I ordered the physical book to simply hold in front of my face. Well, I also had ordered it. It's arrived.
17:46So I have one upstairs and downstairs because your mother did. I missed you saying that. I'm sorry. So I just am simply sitting there now with the book open in front of me, but I'm not reading anything on the pages. That's pretty hilarious. And then you told me that that was a good, you should do what the Q &A. Yes. Start the Q &A. Okay. Okay, we're going to dive right in. It's back to school time. Do you think you will homeschool, private school, or public school with your kids? We haven't done an update on this in a bit. You go first. You go first.
18:24Okay. Okay. I think we will do public school unless one of our kids, because I went to a public school. I loved my schooling experience. and all that came with it. We live so close to great public schools. So we're going to go the public school route until we have a kid who maybe needs something different and then we will adjust accordingly. Would you agree with that? Yeah, I think that public school, to say what you just said in a slightly different way, public school will be the default, but we'll also look at every kid's needs on a case-by-case basis. And I think one thing that was on there to also touch on is the plan between now and elementary school.
19:12And that right now is to nanny share through to kindergarten. Yes, but looking very closely at adding another child. Yes, or two. Yes. And we really like, but today, Tate, she's booked and busy. She's got a play date. Well, my mom's in town, so it's different. But she was supposed to have a play date because she's a friend. and then later this day they have museum time booked for her and some friends so like we're getting we're starting to schedule some things um we've got dance class in the fall again and um we're gonna do swim lessons so like we're starting to get her we want her around kids we want her learning we want her doing things so so are are you going to do like a curriculum with the nanny okay so this is a great question and my first question and this is me not knowing Kids don't, like, have to go to school till kindergarten.
20:03Is that accurate? Like, preschool isn't, like, a state-required thing. Correct, Jules. So people use it to, like, get kids used to school? Is that what people do? So, for example, our elementary school does not have pre-K. It starts at kindergarten. Now, we might do what we were talking to the neighbors about. It's, like, we might start doing a two, three-a-day week program somewhere. just so when kindergarten comes it's not so shocking that you're in a classroom every day. But correct. They do not have to do pre-K. Okay. For the nanny share curriculum wise they're already on a curriculum. A little one.
20:42I want to formalize it a little more. Yeah we're going to get more formal. And is there going to start that in like September with the school year? I think that this is a very good nudge to do so. Yes. Okay. That's a very, but you know what, mate? Are we going to do the American school year or the Canadian school year? What's the Canadian school year? I think we start school later. You know, there's something about. I think we start in September. I think when, because, so we live near a school and every morning, everybody in our neighborhood walks to school. There's the little backpacks. They're holding mom and dad's hand.
21:19It is truly out of a storybook. I would like Tate and Wawa to be kind of like doing some backpack action around that time as well. I think I Googled in back to school in Texas is this week. That's what I thought. I don't know. Never mind. I was going to say what's the name of the school by you, but I won't ask you that. That is – that's what I thought. So long story short, we want to formalize the curriculum and get a little more structured. Not anything crazy over the top. And then was there another piece to it? Oh, yeah. I think that we'll start that in the school year, which I guess is next week.
22:03Well, it's actually ironic because, okay. Tate's missing the first two days of school. No. She's in Canada. I don't know if you remember we said this three weeks ago, though, but we were talking to Maria and we were like when so the neighbors were they were gone for three weeks we didn't we didn't want to dox that they were gone um but now that they're back we can say that they we said when they get back we're going to sit down and do like a a whole regroup yeah so it's actually perfect timing school starts uh next week August 18th for you guys on Monday in your neighborhood Tuesday okay okay yeah and and on the curriculum piece the difference of today versus six months ago and why to ramp it up is like it feels like she feels like she wants to learn right now she can count to three um it feels like she can really grasp like if you if you there's a concept and you pick a concept and you take the time to teach it to her it she can generally grasp it now and so that's the the inflection point that's occurred versus like six months ago three months ago if If you tried to explain colors to her, she wouldn't get it.
23:11If you tried to explain numbers to her, she wouldn't get it. No, she clearly does. Okay. So that's the situation for curriculum. Yep. And you went to an all-boys school? Elementary school was not. It was both. And high school was all-boys. And what's your take on all-boys schools? I think all of it is so school-dependent and so kid-dependent. so I think it's I guess our single gender schools here they're not that's not really a thing well there's that all girls school that's you have to get on they only the only way you can get in is a lottery yeah have you heard of this school no people seem to love it they love it it's like a great yeah I think I think that it's all it's all school specific and kids specific but did you enjoy your experience yeah it's fun and what did you enjoy about it most
24:08because i can't imagine all boys in the classroom i went to an all-girls school okay jewels and i i think that the benefits i don't i don't know the benefits of all boys schools off the top of my head but like the benefits of all girls schools to young women i think are like a vast okay explain why like leadership opportunities and there's like there's no gender bias in the classroom and I think you're like able to speak your mind a little bit more because like those are just very formative years for girls and I think that you like I don't know I don't know what it would have been like to go to high school with boys but it was it was great being in an all-girl school I think it's very well put very formative years of course and you probably were super comfortable speaking your mind yeah it's a different learning environment I would think.
24:55A hundred percent. And it's just like, it would, everything, nothing was about if you were a girl or a guy. Like it was just, you were just a person existing at school and I loved it. And that was beautifully put. Now Harrison, can you please articulate the guy side of things? And your experience was? No, I don't have anything insightful to say on the matter. You just enjoyed it? Yeah, I had a good, I had a good fun, high school experience that I think was pretty stereotypical for, um, for an all boys private school. And how did you guys do sports? In what sense? You guys were, you guys played other high schools.
25:38So, no, it's actually a good question. So, so there's something called the CAIS and that was like all the private schools. And so we'd play all the private schools in our league. So we had a league with the other private schools and then our league would get granted a certain amount of spots in the provincial finals. So like in basketball like if the provincial if oh my god this is actually really funny we don't have state like state finals. Wow. We have the provincial finals. Okay. Oh because providences. Because we have provinces. You dorks. Why don't you guys just call it states? I know. There's a lot of things we could do.
26:25And so if there's 16 teams that go to provincials, our league would get allocated one or two of those spots. And then other regions or other leagues, mostly public, would get allocated the other 14 or 15 slots. We just had divisions the same as colleges, like division one through three. And it was public and private schools. Ours was the same. We had classes like 2A, 3A, 4A, 5A, 6A based on population size of the school. Yeah. Yeah. We had no population size adjustments. Interesting. You'd think that there would be. Oh, we did. We actually did. Wow. But they were so minuscule and there was only two.
27:14And it's not like the U.S. in any sense. Right. Like a 6A. Pretty much all the schools are in, like everyone you know from Canada would have been, or everyone you know from BC would have been in the same league. Like everyone that you know from Canada is like in the bottom, like 20 % of Canada, right? And why do you think that is, Jules? Because it's the closest to the US for trade? Exactly. Because the country was built and largely has been built on the backbone of American resources. What can we do about that? There's so much more land. It's actually crazy to look at a map and look at where all the major cities are.
27:56It's insane. They're just like extensions of us. There's a very clear why. There's some clear dependency matters going on. I know, but there's so much more room for growth up there. You'd hope that that would start to happen. What do we got to do? I don't know if we're going to solve it on this podcast. Okay, you guys, here's something no one warns you about when you become a parent. The sheer amount of energy you will spend thinking about your kids. Yep, poop. The color, the consistency. How often? Was it too much? Was it not enough? It's a thing. It's a whole entire thing. I remember bringing this up to Jules at one time and she was just like, LOL, that's exactly how I am with Jenny.
28:37So basically, obsessed dog moms and human moms, we have the same brain, okay? And if anyone gets being this invested in the quality of their dog's poop, It's Ollie. 29:49That's O-L-L-I-E dot com slash 2PARENTS and enter code 2PARENTS to get 70 % off your first box. Ollie, feed the obsession. Okay. All right. When are you planning on potty training Tate? These are another great question. She's starting to show interest? I think she's showing interest. I think she's showing interest in learning and I think that what's going to happen I'd love to hear what you think is I think one day either the neighbors or one of us is just going to put their hand up and say like let's do it let's start the process people I hear great things about like you get rid of the diaper for a weekend and the kids figure it out I hear that's very effective so I think that that's likely what will happen And I also think there is a chance that she will do it on her own.
30:42So what's starting to happen now is if we go into the bathroom to pee, we'll tell her, Tate, we're going to the bathroom. She's got a little pink and white potty that sits in there downstairs. She'll come and sit on it. So she's understanding what's happening. So I think like the interest is getting there. Yes. And we had like a, we had a situation. I don't want to get into too much detail on it, but where she communicated exactly what she needed. Tape pee pee. And we were kind of effective with it. Yeah, so we're starting to – the interest is there. But I don't want to – yes. I didn't want to drive it.
31:21I didn't want us to drive it. I wanted to see it from her like we're seeing it from her, which is cool. Well, people say, from what I understand, and correct me if I'm wrong, but from what I've gathered, doing it too soon kind of sucks and takes a little longer. But doing it once they're really, really ready is a little quicker. And we're in no rush. Diapers are no issue. I think it was maybe what Dr. Ari said. She said if you do it any earlier than two or something, they're potty training you. Correct. You're not potty. They're not actually being potty trained. Very true. I actually don't understand what that means.
31:58Like they're training you to take them to the toilet every single time that they need to go. As opposed to being more instinctual for them. As opposed to them remembering to actually go there? Yeah. Okay. No, I think I'm with you. I got to say this too, guys. I love her in diapers because she's so little. So it is hard for me. yeah i mean the fact that just processed that like oh my god she's not gonna be in diapers because she's that old is like yeah i don't think we're ready for that oh so yeah i don't know we're in no rush we'll put it that way okay because she's still our little girl um okay how do you put god guys just kick us while we're down how do you plan a transition to a big girl bed we don't I'm doing April with my second baby and hoping to have my daughter in a big girl bed and potty trained by then.
32:55Wish me luck. You are far more ambitious pregnant than I was. Um, I, so our thing was less new, like less was more. Cause we thought about this and I, we discussed it on here a little bit, but like, do we want to potty train Tate before we had Rocky? And the answer to that was no. And where I'm glad we didn't is like, sometimes if Rocky is a bottle, Tate's like can Tate have a bottle and we'll just give her one for a second she took like a drink of it just to like see if she can have it I would assume if Rocky was in diapers Tate would be like Tate diapers so it's really nice right now and then like Rocky has a crib Tate has a crib and we do a lot of discussing that they have the same Tate has a car seat Rocky has a car seat we really and I hope that she's not far off of being able to get excited about a big girl bed and I almost feel like that's when we'll make the transition is when she knows what it is and she can get pumped about it yeah because right now don't pick it when we say big girl bet it's like she's not even two like she's not a big girl she's a baby and yeah she doesn't understand the concept of big girl yet at all that isn't landing what is landing is sister and what's really landing is instead of saying tate you love rocky saying Rocky loves you Tate.
34:13She smiles so big. Yeah. So like she doesn't have a concept that she's supposed to be Rocky's big sister right now. She just knows they're siblings and we're all a family. Yeah. But she's not even two. So like of course and sometimes I have to remember that like you know and so anyways we I'm excited for the big girl bed because I think it's going to look cute in the room. I can't wait to like pick it out. You know that's all very exciting. But when are we going to do that? you know i was looking at the nana the other day she's still like size wise she's good in her crib um oh my gosh her crib transitions she has the crib that her and rocky both have the crib that transitions into a toddler bed i have to look at how to do that but anyways i don't think we know we're gonna do it worry that we threw away the piece i don't think there was a piece.
35:07Yeah, because so I think the way it works is you remove the front piece and you replace it with like a three quarter length bar little situation. Yeah, I would love to know when people like I'm actually going to ask people this afterwards like when did you transition them to a baby bed or to a little girl bed? But no rush not, I think the answer to that is she's about to be two and it's not on the radar. The crib is good right for now. But a part of that is also like we asked Dr. Brown about this and she said to wait as long as possible. So it was at one point top of mind and then she kind of had us deprioritize it.
35:47I think with everything, a trend you'll see with us is we're not in a rush. There's one thing we are in a rush on and it is learning how to swim. Yes. But when it comes to taking away the pacifier during the day, we weren't in a rush. And then we became in a rush because we didn't want to hurt or impact her speech. Okay. but she still has her pacifier at night when it came to taking away the bottle like we did not do that at one year and there are still days where she's like can i have a bottle and we're like sure and she literally takes one sip of it she just like wants to we don't fight her on these things we just say sure here you go take it for a second um potty training we're not in a rush and so with the bed like we'll get there everyone ends up all everyone in this room sleeps in an adult bed so we'll get there yep but i don't think we're in a rush yet um and i do believe natural signs start to happen which i think we follow those trajectories when they present themselves and like you know us we'll like we will go ham when we are potty training it'll be all we're talking about we'll be like okay this is what we're learning but it's not we're not there yet okay golly this is tough what are your plans for tate's second birthday well she's not turning to um birthday pool party so absolutely no birthday pool party here's why the safety of that would ruin my day um because you can't make everybody be in a floaty we would obviously have a lifeguard there but even with the lifeguard it wouldn't no at that age it would be too stressful too many kids um so just no pool party i loved we both loved what we did for her first birthday and that was i don't if you don't know we had um barbecue bubbers barbecue bash because her favorite food was ribs and honestly still kind of is at least a top five foods ribs or chicken leg or a chicken wing but anyways we had we went to county line barbecue we rented out the outdoor space we did bubbers backyard bash or barbecue bash we had a little band we had a little play area yeah we we did what we said we never would do and we had a big party so you're gonna do that for the second birthday we're going big jules and for number two yeah wow and you know what i was pregnant at tate's first birthday felt like crap i think i threw up in the parking lot i'm thrilled to be like able to be there for this one run around with her play with her I do think I know the theme.
38:17I'm not going to tell you guys. As long as it's fun and not bougie, I'm on board. Okay, you guys. Snacks in this house have become a full-time job. You guys know, if you have a toddler, what I'm talking about. Tate is at the stage where she wants snacks constantly, and I really try to be intentional about what I'm giving her. But let's be real, I don't have time to make every single snack from scratch, and that's where Little Spoon comes in. Tate is obsessed with their snacks. Her favorites are the Yoko's, which she calls Go-Go's And if I don't have them stocked, we have a real problem on our hands And honestly, they're not just a Tate thing When Jules heard about that we were working with Little Spoon She asked for the whole box of Fruit Rippers to be sent to the office And I get it because they are that good And I eat Tate's little puffs I love them because they're in like a resealable bag And what I love about Little Spoon is I'm not overthinking the labels Or second-guessing what I'm serving Because they've banned 100-plus ingredients across the board No artificial dyes, flavors, or sweeteners.
39:15Everything is designed with real ingredients and real nutrition in mind. Plus, they grow with your kid. So when we're in the toddler era right now, right, we also have baby purees that Rocky will be able to have. We've got biteables, and then they go to plates, and then they make lunches for the bigger kids, and it's my trusted spot for every stage, which takes a huge decision off of our plate. So you guys get 30 % off your first online order at littlespoon.com slash two parents with code two parents. That's L I T T L E S P O O N.com slash two parents with code two parents for 30 % off your first order.
39:51So, yeah, so her first birthday was over the top in the sense of like, yeah, I had an arch made that said like Bubbers barbecue bash and we had it catered. Like we did do things like that, but it wasn't, it doesn't feel super like formal or upscale. And that's kind of our line. So this next theme is in line with that. It's a party for kids and parents. All ages. It's a celebration of like life and us doing it for two years, her being two. Like the same thing is going to happen at three. And you know what? We always set, it's going to happen every year. we always because i love celebrating things and but we always said i was like i will not there okay here's a couple things i said number one i will not be throwing big birthday parties number two no christmas presents and number three i don't think we said no christmas presents i said no toys you know toys the joy on those kids face when they get a toy i've never bought her a toy.
40:57Just for the record. You've seen people give her a toy though. But what is what we said not that she will get toys from other people not from us. I've never bought her a toy. But it's fun to see her get a toy. Like if she wants like for her first birthday she got a scooter. She loves her scooter. Yeah but not her. Yeah first birthday. Well whatever. It's just like she's not going to get a ton of toys but I do want her to get one toy. Like I want her to get some toys on Christmas. I want to pull the exact receipts on what I said so I can actually reflect on it. That's my verdict on this. I don't want to think about a hypothetical of what I may or may not have said and then get myself into a corner on defending it.
41:37Exactly. But I would say my updated thought on these gifts and things are like, I like her to get one or two Christmas presents and one or two birthday presents. I want her to enjoy that. Great. And when she does that, I also want her to pull two toys out that she doesn't want anymore that we will donate. We talked about that a lot, for sure. And I really love that aspect of it. We will always be a charitable household, but I do. I'm enjoying her getting to see things. But when we go to stores and things, we don't buy her things. She gets to give them a hug and put them back. Okay. Cat's got his tongue.
42:12And the last thing. Oh, okay. So I used to not understand calling your kids your best friends.
42:20That girl is... She's our best friend. It's a very unique, special relationship. Because it's tough. Because I always loved when my mom said, I'm your mom, I'm your mother, not your friend. And that's true. Like, kids need parents. But she's also my best friend. Yeah, I thoroughly love doing things with her. She's the best. Yeah, so it is this tough line of like, I was always like, why are you calling her? Going to the coffee shop with her? She started asking. It doesn't get much better. yesterday we were working Harrison and I both were like at the we were doing some like laptop time and she just walked over crawled up on the table looked at us both was like coffee shop coffee shop coffee shop and we were like okay okay Tate would like to go to the coffee shop but it was like 8 p.m.
43:07so we're like we can't um so anyways we know the theme it's fun too because like from her first birthday to her second birthday her first birthday she couldn't walk so we sat her in the ball pit and she was crawling around but now like she can walk and play with her friends and like she has friends. She walked like the week after her first birthday. Literally the week after. And the other thing about her is for her first birthday, we invited all of our friends' kids who were the same age. Now like Bubber has friends at the park. Bubber has friends at the museum. I have a mother's phone number who I've never met and they do playdates together.
43:45And I tell you know, we just talk to each other saying like, hi, I'm so-and-so's mom because I'm a mother now. And we, they do. and so we're going to have to invite her to the birthday. Yeah. No, we're going to have to. We're excited to. We get to. I'm just saying, like, we're going to be inviting. I mean, Tate has friends, so it's pretty cute. And I'm very excited about the theme. I think it's guessable. Jules, I would love to give you one guess. Dance. Okay. Bylar. Okay. Good guess. P, do you have a guess? No guess from P. Boots. Okay. Yeah, we will go. What? Does that mean it's boots? No, your guesses were boots and dance.
44:27Okay. So we're just, I'm not going to respond to them. We're just going to table your guesses. Okay. And then we can refer back and see if you were right or wrong. It's like when we were having people guess Rocky's name. Like, I just said, okay. Even though somebody got it. Did you ever find out how he got it? Did we ever say that it's Hannah Chody's husband that got it? I don't know. They got what? Our newfound character on the podcast, Hannah. I don't know if you said it was Chad. I knew, but I don't know. At the time, Hannah wasn't a character. I was reviewing our character the other day. Yeah, it's Hannah's husband.
44:55I saw a video of Hannah on the For You page, and the top comment was, did you know that Alex refers to you as a character on her podcast? And she responded, wait, what episode? That's so funny. I told her, I'm like, listen, you don't need to listen to this podcast ever. Did you see her jewelry in the workplace video? It was so funny. It was so good. It was so good. Let's summarize it. Summarize it for the people. There was a podcast clip that said that essentially like professional women don't wear jewelry or allowed jewelry because people are focusing on your jewelry rather than what you're saying.
45:34And like she stitched it and it comes up with her and she's just going like this, like right into the camera. She's a whole stack. Yes. Yeah. And she was a vice president at Goldman Sachs. Yeah. She's like, this is coming from a vice president at Goldman Sachs, but like wear your jewelry. Yeah. She's like, yeah, I thought it was so well done. It was really good. He sent it to, you sent it back to him. Yeah, that was such a good start. He's like, clink, clink, clink, clink, clink. We're like, period, queen. I think I commented on it. Okay. The biggest difference you've noticed so far between having a girl and a boy.
46:11My first is a girl and I'm pregnant with a boy right now. Feels like the theme of everyone I know is like they had a girl first and now they're having a boy. It's so crazy. it's too soon to tell. I have such a simple answer to this. No, you go. I thought you were throwing the ball to me. I am. Ball throw. I agree. Too soon to tell. The only truly noticeable difference is different process change in the diaper. Yeah, that's literally it so far. But they eat, they sleep, and they drink the same. And they look the same. We play this game sometimes where we pull up photos and we zoom in and we say, is this tater rocky?
46:49and it's hard to tell but I think I saw this video of a dad swimming with his son he had three girls and his fourth kid was a son and I showed it to you and the son is like he doesn't know how to swim yet and he's running around both parents jumping in the pool the dad's having to like keep getting him out and he's just like this boy it like how I never saw this video I saw the video did I send it to you I don't think so I saw it on my for you page it's pretty cute and he's just like we had three girls who just like jumped to daddy and this boy's just like trying to get in the pool what what's a weird kind of mindset shift is is and like it kind of just went the other way here is like the idea obviously when it was tate first i really you know we were a girl we were like a girl family uh-huh and then rocky comes and things have evened up and like imagine if like our next two kids are boys and like we swear we swap to the three to one ratio like i just haven't ever pictured us as like a house with a bunch of you know hectic boys running around i always envision like that ratio being like three girls one boy harrison i think about it all the time i think about how our whole identity the first year was very girl pinks everything we bought was pink we painted like it was all pink and girly and coffee shops and this and that and then you add a boy in and like he's not old enough yet to like want to play with trucks okay but yeah it's gonna it's gonna dictate a lot like are we gonna have a mad house of boys running around or are we gonna have a sweet house of girls and even kind of like with like my mom bought uh like a horse blow up doll at the pool and we were at uh academy sports and we bought tata pink flamingo we're gonna buy a couple other things and i was like i was just going to buy a bunch of pink things because we always buy pink and purple stuff for rubber and then and i was thinking okay like i guess well you know what are we going to do with the horse like to keep it throw it out i was like oh no like rocky will like the rocky we need we need some masculinity colors thank you yeah yeah so the difference right now we don't know i think it's coming not saying horse there for boys or girls i know tate loves horses it's not where he's going with it.
49:12The point I was going with it was like it was kind of going to be an all pink pool and now it's not. Now it's going to be a pool of a lot of different colors. Yeah, the whole house is. I mean, in the playroom, we went green. That was a great call by you because we were going to do paint. If you've tried everything to lose weight and feel stuck, this summer can be different. 51:11So Rocky is four months next week. And we have not, I have, you've left him one night. Uh, Harrison had a work trip, but I haven't left him yet. I haven't wanted to leave him yet. I haven't wanted to leave him or Tate. I've like really enjoyed being with him the whole time, but we are going to the U S open and, and that's in New York. Like we've decided we're actually still on the fence, but I don't think the kids will come. And so that will be the first time that we leave them. Right. So that'll be at five. Rocky will be five. Can you help me on the math here? It'll be four and a half, five months.
51:50Yeah. That'll be. So how do you mentally prepare for that? I think the way you mentally prepare for it is you just say it is important to have some time to yourself because it's always a good recharge for us. When Harrison and I left Tate for the first time, we missed her so much. I think we moved our flight up a day early. We were in New York again. And I think we came home early. Was our first trip without Tate to New York? I kind of think it was. And we've done one trip without Tate? Well, I went to Oklahoma City for Sydney's baby shower. Well, I more so mean where both of us were gone because I've had a couple one-night work trips.
52:30I think we've only left them one time and it was New York I thought there may have been a second I don't know we don't like to leave them we love to be with them yeah we're very much of the mindset of like if we can logistically bring them we will try to do that 10 out of 10 times just sometimes the logistics don't make sense and that obviously is the reality of life and but what's what we've ordered but how do you mentally prepare to leave your baby overnight i think it sucks i think that like it sucks and it's good though it's also like very important to get a good night's sleep to wake up in the morning and go do your have your coffee i'm at a point right now where i don't want to spend any nights away from them okay and i know that uh in time that will change and i'll you know that you'll will love the you know what you were just explaining i would on this trip to new york if they could come i would rather they come i i understand it's probably not going to make sense on this trip and like i will miss them throughout the whole trip and it's that i think there's a chance we'll bring them we're really on the fence about it logistically it's going to be fun new york you land you have to uber you're schlepping like it's a lot easier to not take kids in new york the scent like one of the main activities of new york is like eating at restaurants and it's just not that's not where they thrive so hotel rooms are small eating in the hotel rooms is hard it's it's hard to take them to new york there's no never gonna be set up yeah so i i don't know how that's gonna shake out but i don't think they're gonna come but and i think we'll miss them dearly yeah and to answer your question.
54:16Okay. You mentally prepare by saying two things are true. One, you miss, you're going to miss them like crazy, but number two. Okay. So make the most of it. Enjoy. Sleep in a little, totally have your coffee journal, wake up, read audio book with a book in front of you, like do whatever. But yeah. And, and know that your, your heart misses them. And you know, so do, so do ours whenever we're not with our kids. Um, and what was I going to say? Oh, I don't know take it or leave it we find FaceTiming them to be harder when you hang up the phone they recognize that you're not there we found that to be we don't FaceTime when we're away we ask whoever's with them it'll be one of our parents we'll ask them both whoever's with them send photos so many photos yeah and the experience there has been much more when one of the two of us has left town because as we alluded to before only once both of us have left him.
55:17Yeah. But I'm just saying FaceTiming was like you show them that you you say hi and they're like you're not here and then you say bye again. It's hard. Yeah. Okay. Found your podcast back in March and absolutely love listening. Thank you. We love you for listening. It's super informative. Okay. I'm going to skip the compliments because I do love you for saying them though. Thank you. I have a little one and he just turned two today. Aw. He is getting into the big feelings emotion stage of life where he's expressing himself by hitting or sometimes, and here lately doing this, biting. I was wondering if you guys have any takes or advice on this.
55:49I keep getting told this is normal, but this isn't really making me feel any better about the situation. People will be switching to full-time daycare next week, so I'm hoping with more constant routine it'll help. Any tips would be super helpful. I'm excited to hear what you have to say on this. I think, number one, it is normal. They grow out of biting. Nobody wants to have the biter, but from what I hear is they definitely grow out of biting. Number two, we see it with Rocky sometimes. Like Tate will like do a little slap on him, literally hug him, kiss him. It's cuteness aggression. Like they can't control what's happening.
56:21And if they want that toy and they can't get it, like they don't know how they can't imagine wanting something so bad, knowing you want it and knowing the name for it in your brain, but not being able to say it out loud. Your body, your body's reacting so much faster than your brain can speak. So you bite. They're on overload. Like they do grow out of it. And I know it doesn't make you feel better, but everything like brat busters, what I see, she says, like when it comes to hitting, take the hand, no hitting, move on. Take like, look at them. No biting, move on because they do grow out of it.
56:54But like they can't do better sometimes. Yeah. I also, I, I, everything you said, I totally agree with. The other thing I try to put myself in their, in their perspective. that's why i explained imagine yeah you want that plant but like and and and you can't walk i literally try to like say like okay she just jumped on him okay like why do we think she just jumped on him imagine i'm her like what and okay he's there he's being so cute she loves him so much but expressing that love like I know I want to hug him expressing that love she doesn't she doesn't know how she just doesn't know how to do it and so I found that that really putting myself as best as I can in their shoes has been has been helpful when it comes to being patient around around tougher behavior totally and not getting mad about it totally and a lot of times like And understanding the way their brain works has made parenting way more enjoyable.
58:07And a good example of that is sharing, right? Understanding. The other day, what did Tate have? She was holding something. I was like, Tate, I need that. And I took it from her. And I just took it from her. And she just started crying. And you looked at me and you're like, imagine if I just took something from you. So I was like, you're right. So I gave it back to her and I said, hey, Tate, mama needs to borrow. Mama needs this. I'm going to take it from you and we're going to do a countdown together and then it's going to be mama's. Five, four, three, two, one. And then I took it from her. No problem.
58:36She walked off. Yeah. It's just this like you can't take it out of their hand. And when it comes to sharing, the other day we had we were with a friend and there was one juice box. So we just explained like Tate gets a turn. So-and-so gets a turn. Tate gets a turn. So-and-so gets a turn. We go back and forth. Perfect. But if you just take the juice box and say, Dada gets it, that's just going to erupt in a big feeling. And it's going to be, we're not gentle parents. I promise you. We say our pleases. We say our thank yous. If we spill something, we clean it up. We take our plate to the sink. Our actions do have consequences, but also understanding their brain, I think is very, very, very helpful and pays dividends in terms of minimizing these meltdowns because their brain can't do what it can't do yet.
59:19And at this age, developmentally, they cannot understand when we take a toy away from them that they'll get it back. They don't understand the concept of it coming back unless you tell them. And so I think understanding this pays dividends of sharing, of saying, hey, mommy and daddy are leaving. Saying when they bite, they're not biting because they're a mean, bad kid. They're biting because their brain was walking before they could run. Totally. So I think I know it's really tough to have the biting, but just understanding their brain is overflowed. Imagine a cup full of water and it's overflowing out of it.
59:59They can't hear you. They can you could just get get right there and say no biting that will start to catch up to them. But you don't have a bad kid or anything. You just have a kid that gets overwhelmed and can't they can't voice what they want yet. That was kind of a tangent. Sorry. And I do agree with you. I do think routine will help, but you might get a call or a text from the daycare one day saying, hey, he bit so-and-so and don't get down about that. Just know like we'll work through the biting.
1:00:31And good on you for asking, but I don't, I don't, I don't blame you for speaking for feeling the way you feel. Okay. I'm not sure if you guys have talked about this, but I know your experience. I know a lot about your experience postpartum with Rocky, but I'd love to hear more about how Tate transitions. Any difference, as you saw in her after Rocky? I'm sure there was an adjustment period. H, I'm going to let you take this one. After you. There was an adjustment period. Would you agree? Yes. And how long would you say it was? We definitely have this on record, but it felt like the first week was the choppiest.
1:01:07but by week two things were pretty smooth. And define choppy. Like what does that mean? She was very, like I remember at some point in the first 48, 72 hours we were just sitting on the bed and he was there and one of us was holding him and she just started like crying in a way that I haven't really seen her cry before. Like where she was just so sad. And it wasn't a fit cry. Remember, I said you were holding him. She was on the bed and her bottom lip started to quiver and she wasn't mad. She was sad. And I went into the bathroom and I started crying. Sad, maybe scared. Confused, probably. Yep.
1:01:54So, yeah, there was death. It wasn't like we got him from the hospital and it was kumbaya. There was totally an adjustment period because she's so little. But one thing we did that I think worked really well is we've been very intentional about giving her her one-on-one time and her one-on-one time with you and her one-on-one time with me. Whether that happens with one of us is taking her to the park or one of us is taking her to the coffee shop. And I feel like looking at those special moments we had with her and not now that he's come that we have with her in our first year and a half. And not just throwing those at the window that he's here has been super effective.
1:02:32and I'd want to think to say that I'm blanking on, oh, when we don't, when she like doesn't get her one on one time, I do notice that behaviorally. Yeah. And how do you notice it? Like what's an example? She's just, she's looking for, she looks for a lot more attention. She's. Well, so we have the purple monkey mat, the piano mat. Yeah. And Rocky is at the age now where he can lay on it and play with it. And if we haven't had one on one time with her, she does look for more attention in terms of like she'll be like for tate can tate do that and so then we have to take turns with tate and rocky on it where usually rocky can just lay on it that's a great call out um like her sharing with rocky is better if she's had her one-on-one time yes and i think that started when i was pregnant because the last the third trimester i'm so tired i would sleep a lot in the mornings and you would take her to the coffee shop so now i think the best thing we can do is in the mornings you usually still take her to the coffee shop and all cuddle with Rocky.
1:03:32And I think that's really good for her because she's still, her routine has stayed the same. Yep. Which is nice. Um, but there was definitely, definitely an adjustment period. But now fast forward to, I don't think she remembers the time where he wasn't there. I would agree with that. And it's pretty darn cute. Like she just, she knows Rocky's part of the family. Rocky's her brother. So it's pretty sweet. Um, okay. That was a good Q and a, we're going to wrap there because of, we've just been going for a long time. That's fun. All right. We love you guys. Thank you for listening. Have a great weekend and we will talk to you in Vancouver on Monday.

This week on Two Parents & A Podcast, happy Friday!! We are officially in Vancouver ourselves, but before we headed out, we answered YOUR questions (& for our guys and gals who love a parenting-heavy episode, this one is for you!!!)
But not until we cover a few things first: maintenance days vs. self-care days (getting your nails done is NOT self-care, it's maintenance!), the weirdest ways people find out they're pregnant (did you know your hairstylist might know before you do?! Dry scalp, hair changes.. the signs are everywhere), and the great audiobook debate: Alex has been listening to her audiobook 24/7, everyone keeps talking to her, and we’re thinking this might be rude if it was ANYTHING besides a book (like imagine shushing someone while reading Twitter LOL).
Then we get into your questions.. and guys… you were kicking us while we're down (can you tell Alex is a little emotional about Tate turning 2?!) We covered all things getting older: potty training (and the Dr. Ari rec we're following), big girl bed transitions (STOP), birthday party plans (we officially know the theme.. not telling!!), and how Tate adjusted to becoming a big sister!! Don't worry, we've got the baby topics too: the biggest differences between having a girl and a boy so far, mentally preparing to leave your baby overnight for the first time & more. And since it's back to school time, we give our honest updated thoughts on the homeschool vs. private vs. public school question!
We finish up with biting & hitting.. and the realization that makes it so much easier for us to be patient: their brain is like an overflowing cup. They're not a bad kid, they just can't voice what they want YET.
Hope everyone has a great weekend :-)
LOVE YOU GUYS!
